The World Cup is underway, and it's been incredible. On our podcast, The Away End, with Daniel Alarcon and John Green, we're talking about the games that have delighted us, the teams that have inspired us, what we're loving and what surprised us, all through the lens of being massive fans of the world's most beautiful game.

00:00:44 - 00:00:58 | Speaker 8:

Daniel, this tournament has been magical so far. There's so much to love, and I can hardly believe the drama that the group stage brought us. And now it's time for us to talk about the teams that are left as the field is whittled down to one World Cup champion on July 19th.

We've all seen the headlines. Florida man wrestles alligator in a tuxedo or Florida man sues after finding toenails in his ice cream.

00:01:16 - 00:01:21 | Speaker 5:

It's easy to laugh at the meme, but have you ever wondered about the human behind the headline?

00:01:21 - 00:01:22 | Speaker 11:

Hey, I'm Frankie P.

00:01:22 - 00:01:27 | Speaker 5:

And I'm Amelia. On our podcast here in Florida and beyond, we're going beneath the surface of the sunshine state.

00:01:27 - 00:01:35 | Speaker 3:

from interviews with real people who make Florida weird. I'm pulling it up, and as I'm pulling it up, I see an arm. Stop it. Come down.

00:01:36 - 00:01:43 | Speaker 5:

To deep dives into the stories you didn't know you were looking for. Hey, give it up for Mark Wahlberg on the podcast today. It's more than just a meme, it's a lifestyle.

00:01:52 - 00:02:13 | Speaker 10:

I'm Mange Shatigular, and I'm back with a new season of my podcast, Skyline Drive. This time I talk to scientists, biopunks, curmudgeons, blues owners, super seniors, and Goa's top cryotherapy lab to try to understand this obsession with living forever and what it means for all of us. And I get into a bit of trouble along the way.

00:02:13 - 00:02:18 | Speaker 1:

I'd say probably start bone smashing. That doesn't work. Make it look more defined. They say it works. I don't know.

00:02:18 - 00:02:25 | Speaker 10:

Listen to Skyline Drive, How to Live Forever on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.

00:02:26 - 00:03:19 | Speaker 7:

A couple of quick little things. This is interesting, and I want to ask this question if anybody's ever done this before. If you hate your friend's boyfriend, should you tell her? more than half of women polled 57% think that they owe it to their friend to tell her how they feel about the guy that she's dating the other 43% say it's none of their business to say anything at all but have you ever had it where you had a friend of yours and obviously it doesn't have to be a you know a boyfriend that they're dating could be you know a guy dating a girlfriend or whatever um that you just did not like the person that they were dating do you say something or do you not say something and if so does it cost you your friendship if you do say something

00:03:19 - 00:04:08 | Speaker 2:

what do you guys think i learned the hard way with this because um my friend julie who's now married thank goodness to a great guy but a couple of years ago she was dating this guy and she lives down in indiana and i had gone to visit her and so i was meeting him for the first time and he just totally rubbed me the wrong way and gave all sorts of red flags but she seemed happy and so I didn't want to like I didn't want to ruin that for her and it wasn't until they broke up and he turned out to be a really toxic human being that I said I knew it like I had this gut feeling and I wanted to tell you so bad but I didn't I don't want to ruin your happiness and she was so upset with me for not you know telling her all of these red flags that I saw from the outside because when you're looking from the outside in it's very different the problem though

00:04:08 - 00:04:38 | Speaker 7:

is if you speak up it is one of those things where people people are blinded by love and if you speak up while they're blinded by love they're only going to see you as either the enemy jealous friend or you maybe you know and i'm jealous not meaning jealous like you want that person but jealousy you want that person's time and that's the reason why you're saying it and i think that you got to be really really careful like i think they have to see some of the bad signs yeah before

00:04:38 - 00:05:02 | Speaker 6:

you can step up and say something yeah yeah yeah that's very interesting um because like some of that stuff like i'm trying to figure out a way to say it but oftentimes like you can't trust it's like somebody trying to give a microscopic opinion from a telescopic viewpoint like they're so far away yet they're trying to tell you something that you're close up against You

00:05:00 - 00:05:11 | Speaker 1:

i think guys are don't kevin do you think that guys have it easier to say to one of their buddies you know hey this girl is nuts it didn't girls see i've never been in a situation where i felt

00:05:11 - 00:05:32 | Speaker 2:

like a girl was crazy the only situations that i feel like i've been involved in or guys that i know have been involved in is if you feel like she a hoe or you seen her like sleeping around or something like that outside of like that being the reason you speak up i can't really find too many other situations unless she was like truly wilding out at a party we like hey bro could you

00:05:32 - 00:05:44 | Speaker 1:

tell could you tell a guy that his girl was a hoe yeah for sure see see i think i i agree and i think but i think women have a harder time telling their girl that this guy is bad i feel like i feel like

00:05:44 - 00:06:01 | Speaker 2:

they don't because what i hear a lot of the time is girl code girl code girl code we support women women forever where it's almost like if you see your girl is going down a wrong path there may be some hesitation involved but i always feel like girls are like that's my best friend and regardless

00:06:01 - 00:06:17 | Speaker 5:

of it she knows where i'm coming from for sure but also in that same vein i see one of my closest friends and in this case my friend julie and i'm like but she's so dang happy yeah you know and so you don't want to you don't want to wreck that it was that way it was hard hey june what's going on

00:06:17 - 00:06:56 | Speaker 3:

it's mojo in the morning hi hi um i had a friend who dated this absolute jerk of a human for probably about two and a half three years and there are numerous times where i expressed my concern to her where i was like hey this person is definitely taking advantage of you and not treating you right um she actually really distanced herself from me and didn't want to talk to me very much because i wasn't supportive of the relationship but when they broke up i immediately got phone calls i'm so sorry you were right i should have listened to you um but yeah i can see why some people maybe don't want to say it because some people just don't want to hear it And if they're not ready to see it themselves, they don't respond well.

00:06:57 - 00:07:18 | Speaker 1:

You almost, you have to wait until they get burned a couple of times. Like, and I hate to say this, even if you know way ahead of time, because you don't want to see your friend get hurt. But if you don't say anything for a little bit, they start, you know, they'll notice things. If you say something way before they start noticing things, you're, you're going to be judged.

00:07:19 - 00:07:20 | Speaker 5:

That's really good advice.

00:07:20 - 00:07:23 | Speaker 1:

I think it's going to be, it's going to be a tougher thing.

00:07:24 - 00:07:27 | Speaker 5:

But that's tough, though, to sit back and watch your friend get hurt.

00:07:27 - 00:07:29 | Speaker 1:

Yeah, you know what, though? Not so tough.

00:07:29 - 00:07:39 | Speaker 5:

But as a parent, you can attest to this, of sometimes you have to let Josiah fail so that he can learn from it.

00:07:39 - 00:07:41 | Speaker 1:

Wait till your kids get older, too.

00:07:41 - 00:07:52 | Speaker 2:

But I think in those situations, I feel like I have already attempted to provide the lesson. And if I tell him something to do and he's just not listening, then he bumps his head. It's like, I mean. Okay.

00:07:52 - 00:08:05 | Speaker 1:

But Shannon brings this up, and it's interesting because she uses the kids as the analogy. Wait until it's your kids that are the ones that start getting into the dating world. That's my mama with me. Would you say something?

00:08:05 - 00:08:07 | Speaker 2:

Boy, my mama done told me hella times.

00:08:07 - 00:08:10 | Speaker 1:

She tells you how to do your relationship.

00:08:10 - 00:08:15 | Speaker 2:

She done told me, stop messing with this one. You should have kept this one. And every time, she's been right.

00:08:16 - 00:08:18 | Speaker 1:

Michelle, what's going on?

00:08:19 - 00:08:21 | Speaker 4:

Not much. Thanks for taking my call.

00:08:22 - 00:08:23 | Speaker 1:

Oh, you're welcome. What's happening?

00:08:25 - 00:08:38 | Speaker 4:

So I'm kind of in the same situation. I have an adult child that is dating someone that I didn't feel was the appropriate person for him. And, yeah, it's caused some hostility now.

00:08:39 - 00:08:39 | Speaker 1:

Really?

00:08:39 - 00:08:40 | Speaker 4:

Because they're not happy with me. Yeah.

00:08:40 - 00:08:43 | Speaker 1:

Wait, because you spoke up and said you don't like this person.

00:08:43 - 00:08:48 | Speaker 4:

Because I spoke up. Yeah, and I gave my reasons why, and they didn't agree with me.

00:08:49 - 00:08:51 | Speaker 1:

And are they still with that person?

00:08:52 - 00:08:56 | Speaker 4:

No, they're not, but maybe they are. I'm not sure. Maybe they're hiding it.

00:08:57 - 00:09:02 | Speaker 1:

So, wait, they're not. What made them break up or what made them not be together?

00:09:02 - 00:09:20 | Speaker 4:

Because I spoke up and they took my opinion and supposedly went and broke up with the person. But it's been hostile ever since. It's been quite a few months and it's hostile ever since. And, you know, it's your own child. It's hard when it's your own child.

00:09:20 - 00:09:26 | Speaker 1:

they're upset with you because you you even though they took your advice on this

00:09:26 - 00:09:45 | Speaker 4:

what was it about that person that you didn't like I just didn't feel that they complimented my child like I felt that he was a different person when he was with that person and not only myself but everyone in our family saw it and came to me and then I had to be the scapegoat to

00:09:45 - 00:09:50 | Speaker 1:

say it to him and so he's taking it out on you now because he's no longer in that relationship

00:09:50 - 00:09:59 | Speaker 4:

but you think possibly they're they're still talking to each other i i i hope not but you know they're adult children what can you do you can only speak your peace

00:10:00 - 00:10:04 | Speaker 5:

and hope that they make the right decision but ultimately ultimately at the end of the day it's

00:10:04 - 00:10:27 | Speaker 4:

going to be up to what they want to do yeah i get it too i mean chelsea and i have boys and boys i think are different than uh than girls are where i think a mom's influence on her daughter is a little bit easier than uh a mom's influence on their son you know um yeah thank you for the call I appreciate it. What's going on? Voice Disguise Dee. Dee?

00:10:28 - 00:10:33 | Speaker 1:

Hi. First time, long time. Hey, Dee's on the phone.

00:10:33 - 00:10:40 | Speaker 4:

We're talking about would you tell somebody that you didn't like their significant other if you thought they were bad for them?

00:10:41 - 00:10:49 | Speaker 1:

So I have a family member. Her best friend refused to stand up in her wedding.

00:10:49 - 00:10:57 | Speaker 4:

because she doesn't like the person that she's marrying yeah they her guy is disrespectful

00:10:57 - 00:11:16 | Speaker 1:

and has been for a while it's her first boyfriend that she's marrying oh gosh how old are they uh yeah they're about 22 23 babies so pretty young pretty young and it's caused some issues

00:11:16 - 00:11:17 | Speaker 4:

in the friendship, huh?

00:11:17 - 00:11:22 | Speaker 1:

It has a lot. They don't want to enable her. They definitely want what's best for her.

00:11:23 - 00:11:25 | Speaker 4:

What do you think? Do you think that person's not good for them?

00:11:26 - 00:11:28 | Speaker 1:

No, I don't think so.

00:11:29 - 00:11:36 | Speaker 4:

Oh, boy. Yeah, that's tough. And them going to get married is even worse than them just dating because they're making that big step.

00:11:36 - 00:11:37 | Speaker 1:

Yeah, for sure.

00:11:38 - 00:11:38 | Speaker 4:

Wow.

00:11:38 - 00:11:41 | Speaker 1:

Well, thank you for taking my call. I've listened to you guys forever.

00:11:41 - 00:11:43 | Speaker 4:

Thank you. We love you for listening.

00:11:43 - 00:11:47 | Speaker 2:

You've got to stand up in the wedding when they say, speak now, forever hold your peace.

00:11:49 - 00:11:59 | Speaker 4:

I want to make sure we get Joey on here because, Joey, you actually had your best friend in the entire world say something about the girl you were dating.

00:12:01 - 00:12:07 | Speaker 6:

Yeah, so she pretty much came out and told me that she doesn't like my girlfriend for a bunch of reasons.

00:12:08 - 00:12:13 | Speaker 4:

And so she told you this, and how did you take it when she told you?

00:12:14 - 00:12:36 | Speaker 6:

um i mean she pretty much just listed a bunch of red flags so i'm 19 and my girlfriend's 22 but my girlfriend doesn't have a big social media presence so she doesn't have instagram or facebook or tiktok and she thought that was kind of weird and that there's probably something wrong with her if she doesn't have these social medias well i don't know if that's

00:12:36 - 00:12:41 | Speaker 4:

anything weird i think that's actually probably healthy for her but how did how did your best

00:12:41 - 00:12:50 | Speaker 6:

friend telling you these things changed your relationship with her i mean it it kind of felt like she wanted me to break up with her just because she doesn't have a big social media

00:12:50 - 00:12:56 | Speaker 4:

presence well do you think your your best friend your best female friend has a thing for you

00:12:56 - 00:13:02 | Speaker 6:

no definitely not she she has a long-term boyfriend and a child with this guy so

00:13:02 - 00:13:08 | Speaker 3:

definitely not well like why why does your girl not have a social media presence have you asked

00:13:08 - 00:13:27 | Speaker 6:

um no i haven't really asked her i kind of boiled it down to that because she's told me a lot that she doesn't get along with other girls and she finds all the other images of women on tiktok and instagram like making her feel self-conscious yeah that's a really healthy thing

00:13:27 - 00:13:42 | Speaker 4:

your girl your girl sounds like she's got a good head on her shoulder best friend a hater sometimes yeah wow i so joey you sound like a guy that needs help making decisions are you a guy

00:13:42 - 00:13:55 | Speaker 6:

that needs help making decisions i mean not really i'm not i'm not gonna listen to what my friend says i'm not gonna get rid of her unless i find something bad out yeah about my girl well plus

00:13:55 - 00:13:59 | Speaker 4:

you don't want to get rid of anybody that's giving you ass until you find somebody else that's going to give you ass, right?

00:14:00 - 00:14:04 | Speaker 3:

Exactly. Especially 22 ass at 19.

00:14:05 - 00:14:09 | Speaker 4:

Joey. Joey just sounds lost here. Joey, I'm worried about you.

00:14:10 - 00:14:11 | Speaker 6:

I'll figure it out.

00:14:12 - 00:14:23 | Speaker 4:

All right. All right, we'll talk to you later, buddy. Thank you. I think Joey confused me more about this topic than anybody else. Marie, what's up, Marie? What's going on?

00:14:24 - 00:14:36 | Speaker 5:

Hello. I had a best friend and bridesmaid who I'm no longer friends with because of her husband and she kind of picked the wrong guy and it's hard to be friends with her and support her now.

00:14:36 - 00:14:36 | Speaker 3:

What's wrong with him?

00:14:38 - 00:14:59 | Speaker 5:

The very first time I met him, he was chewing tobacco and just walked right up to my kitchen sink and spat in it. So that was the first red flag. Yeah, okay. And then after that, he was just making like racist comments, ignorant remarks. And I was just kind of like appalled. Like, me and my husband couldn't believe this guy.

00:15:00 - 00:15:24 | Speaker 2:

So I thought to myself, like, there's no way that this is going to work out. And she started dating him after breaking up with her long-term boyfriend. Well, they never broke up. They got married. And it's just been hard to maintain the relationship because there's just very little that I can, like, say to support her now. And she tells me about these, like, things that he does and who he is, et cetera.

00:15:24 - 00:15:26 | Speaker 4:

That's hard. Yeah.

00:15:27 - 00:15:35 | Speaker 9:

Yeah. So let me ask you, you guys don't see each other now that you've said all this stuff and you're just watching this from a distance?

00:15:36 - 00:16:01 | Speaker 2:

I'm watching from a distance and I've never directly addressed it with her because it was so bad from the start. I thought to myself, I don't want to like burst her bubble. I feel like she's going to figure this out by herself. And I didn't want to isolate her, you know, as she went through this. And then it turned out, you know, I kind of wish I did say something because I feel like she hitched her wagon to, like, the completely wrong course, you know?

00:16:02 - 00:16:48 | Speaker 9:

Well, I think you almost got to let it play out. And I think once you stop, you know, you let them play out, then they eventually come to you. And I hate to say this, though. Sometimes you almost need to say to them after the fact, like, hey, I was going to say something to you, but I don't want to, you know, let you know. I would rather have a friend that would speak up personally than a person that would sit in the background and not say anything. And I would hope my friendships would be strong enough where I could also say to them, hey, you know what, I'll live my life and enjoy it and then we'll wait and see. But I also would hope that my friends would be open minded enough to trust me in my ability to be able to give advice. But all right. Thank you for the call.

00:16:48 - 00:16:49 | Speaker 2:

Definitely a lesson learned.

00:16:49 - 00:16:57 | Speaker 9:

I appreciate it. And don't let them spit in your sink. Disgusting. The freaking racist is spitting in your sink.

00:16:58 - 00:17:26 | Speaker 6:
