00:01:33 - 00:02:44 | Speaker 5:

it's the mexican soccer coach mike what's up so my daughter and i don't know if you've ever been uh stereotype based on your looks or your race or ethnicity or whatever immediately and it's like one of those things where it's it's not necessarily true for you specifically but my daughter has just started all her camps she's got a curiosity camp the next couple weeks she's got a soccer camp coming up in like a month and so like some of the parents in that soccer camp have reached out to me and they they said hey would you be interested in like helping like coach like that full-on coach or whatever but like an assistant coach type type of situation And I got to thinking, why would they ever ask me to, like, I've never talked about soccer. I've honestly, genuinely never played soccer as a sport ever, other than maybe kicking a ball in my backyard. And then I'm like, did they think, because I'm Mexican, I'm immediately just naturally good at soccer or that my family history has soccer in it? And they may have asked other dads. I don't know. But it feels like they just went, hmm, well, this guy is Mexican. He must be good at soccer. Is that a thing, by the way?

00:02:45 - 00:02:47 | Speaker 3:

Mexicans are great at soccer?

00:02:48 - 00:02:59 | Speaker 6:

Usually the people that I know that are really into soccer are usually ethnic of some sort. I see a lot of my Albanian friends also that are into soccer, too.

00:03:00 - 00:03:02 | Speaker 5:

It's like the number one sport in the world everywhere but here.

00:03:04 - 00:03:12 | Speaker 6:

The kids love soccer, too. They obviously love it. So you think that they think that you're a soccer player just because you're Mexican?

00:03:12 - 00:03:23 | Speaker 5:

I don't think they were being rude about it. And like I said, they may have asked other dads, but I think they just went, huh, he probably really likes soccer or is into soccer, so he'd be excited about this.

00:03:23 - 00:03:33 | Speaker 6:

Do you think that they had like a meeting, a pre-camp meeting, and they said, we need a soccer coach. Ask the kids who got the Mexican dad to come out here and do this whole thing.

00:03:33 - 00:03:36 | Speaker 5:

Cecily Aguilar. Oh, yeah. Yeah, he's into soccer.

00:03:36 - 00:03:42 | Speaker 6:

He's into soccer. Do you know anything about any of the sports? I mean, could you coach any sport, Mike?

00:03:42 - 00:03:43 | Speaker 5:

Football.

00:03:43 - 00:03:49 | Speaker 6:

Football you could do? Yeah, I could probably. Not football in this case, though, right? No, no, no, like American football.

00:03:50 - 00:03:52 | Speaker 5:

Baseball I could do, too. I played a lot of baseball.

00:03:52 - 00:04:20 | Speaker 6:

Okay. Because that's the thing. The worst is, and I had to coach a soccer team once, but I was an assistant coach, and the head coach didn't know anything about soccer either, and he ended up buying every book about soccer, and he had me come to his house, and we were reading books about soccer. And I said, this team's going to be the worst team ever. And we were sitting around. Like, we were trying to figure out on YouTube drills to do, and things like that, and we went to, like, Dunham's and bought a bunch of, like, little cones to put out there.

00:04:21 - 00:04:40 | Speaker 3:

I feel like the majority of the coaches, especially when it's, like, T-ball time, Little League, are dads. I remember taking a Josiah to a T-ball, and they were just running around the bases. I'm like, are they ever gonna hit? Like, what are you teaching these kids? At least they run around the beach. They're just running. They just run around the beach. They make sandcastles.

00:04:42 - 00:04:54 | Speaker 6:

Those are actually smart coaches, though, that make your kids run in the beginning. Make them tired and then they actually kind of pay attention. So, Mike, you're saying that it was the stereotype of you being Mexican that made them think this.

00:04:55 - 00:05:00 | Speaker 5:

Well, there's a lot of stereotypes that are true. That's why there's stereotypes. But there are some that don't apply to everyone.

00:05:00 - 00:05:18 | Speaker 7:

Everybody. Like, I'm not a good landscaper, just so you know. I'm not a good—I'm not, okay? So don't ask. You have no green thumb. No, no. But I am, like, passionate about my family, and, you know, I'm into Mexican food, but I don't like spicy food. I hate spicy food. Really?

00:05:18 - 00:05:22 | Speaker 6:

By the way, that is a very interesting stereotype that you don't fall the victim of, that you

00:05:22 - 00:05:28 | Speaker 7:

don't like spicy food. Yeah. Is there anything that applies to, like, you guys? Like, if somebody was to look at you and immediately stereotype you—

00:05:28 - 00:05:37 | Speaker 1:

My name's Shannon Murphy. I'm as Irish as you can get But I will not drink a Guinness And my dad always says You are not my daughter Because I don't like Guinness I don't know

00:05:37 - 00:05:51 | Speaker 5:

I mean I'm black So everybody I guess thinks I'm late I don't think I'm late I'm making a point too Like I'm not about to be the late black guy That's not about to be my story Actually to be honest You're on time every morning

00:05:51 - 00:06:01 | Speaker 6:

Yeah It happens Although I will say this Although I went to Wait I went to your gender reveal And you and Sherelle You guys showed up like an hour after the gender reveal started.

00:06:01 - 00:06:04 | Speaker 5:

Yeah, that's different. That's different. We made an entrance. We made an entrance.

00:06:04 - 00:06:08 | Speaker 6:

By the way, did I tell you guys that they had a walk-up song? You did?

00:06:08 - 00:06:28 | Speaker 5:

I texted DJ. I was like, bro, play something. We pulling up in 30 seconds. He's like, you want me to play? I'm like, just play something. And of course, well, this may be a stereotype, but it's a flaw song. The Earth, Wind, and Fire, it's like the Black National Anthem if you go to a cookout. Everybody's going to play this no matter what cookout you go to. Wait, what song is it? It's Before I Let Go. From Earth, Wind, and Fire? Yeah.

00:06:28 - 00:06:44 | Speaker 6:

By the way, I am also black, and you should see me dance. I am an amazing – I can do the whole Michael Jackson moonwalk thing. Actually, everybody thinks because I'm Cuban that I speak Spanish, so they'll start speaking Spanish to me, and all I do is no swear word.

00:06:44 - 00:06:57 | Speaker 5:

You know what I hate? Yeah. I hate when people say, hey, brother. What are you talking about? You never say that. I guarantee you never say that. It's not a thing. We don't walk around slapping hands like, hey, brother. It doesn't happen.

00:06:57 - 00:06:59 | Speaker 6:

What's up, Kristen? How you doing?

00:07:00 - 00:07:17 | Speaker 2:

Hi, good. I was just calling in. I just wanted to say that I thought that maybe Mike was kind of maybe reading into it a little bit too much. It could have been that maybe they were looking at, like, work schedules and just thinking, like, oh, we just need to fill a spot. Maybe we just need somebody to help volunteer.

00:07:17 - 00:07:20 | Speaker 6:

Yeah, so it had nothing to do with considering experience.

00:07:20 - 00:07:28 | Speaker 7:

Yeah. You don't think they looked at me and said, well, he's a short Hispanic man. You look fast with your feet, Mike

00:07:28 - 00:07:30 | Speaker 6:

Right, right What's going on, Susan?

00:07:31 - 00:07:34 | Speaker 4:

Yeah, you're talking about stereotypical coaches

00:07:34 - 00:07:34 | Speaker 6:

Yeah

00:07:34 - 00:07:40 | Speaker 4:

I was a flag football coach for my son When he was in elementary school As a mom

00:07:40 - 00:07:41 | Speaker 6:

Oh, wow

00:07:41 - 00:07:44 | Speaker 4:

And we did pretty well Yeah, you know what?

00:07:44 - 00:07:53 | Speaker 6:

Can I tell you what? We, our soccer team got beat by the all-mom coaching teams All the freaking time You know why?

00:07:53 - 00:08:10 | Speaker 4:

the kids listen to the mom uh coaches actually that's not always true really my son was no he was on a baseball team with one of his friends he wouldn't listen to what i said so the other kids mom and i decided to i would tell her son things and she would tell my son things to do

00:08:10 - 00:08:21 | Speaker 6:

oh yeah yeah that's in anything though that's when me coaching uh basketball i would have another dad go grab my son and take him to the other end of the court and i would always take his kid What's up, Donnell?

00:08:22 - 00:08:50 | Speaker 3:

No, it's Donnell. D-O-N-Y-E-L-L. Good morning to everyone. Good morning. Good morning. What's going on? I want to say welcome to Kevin. Welcome to the show. I listen every morning. He actually knows my daughter. Okay, but I was calling to correct you. Who's the daughter? You named the song. You said Earth, Wind, and Fire, but it is Frankie, Beverly, and May. I said Earth, Wind?

00:08:50 - 00:08:55 | Speaker 6:

Yeah, I'm going to need you. I did. I said, are we sure? You have just lost your black card.

00:08:55 - 00:08:56 | Speaker 5:

Look, are we sure?

00:08:56 - 00:09:02 | Speaker 3:

Is this one of those replay moments? What did you name the song? What did you say? Before I Let Go.

00:09:02 - 00:09:03 | Speaker 6:

Yeah.

00:09:03 - 00:09:04 | Speaker 3:

That is what he made.

00:09:05 - 00:09:11 | Speaker 6:

By the way, he now is no longer officially black. I just want you to know that. We're taking that away.

00:09:12 - 00:09:13 | Speaker 4:

I love black people!

00:09:14 - 00:09:20 | Speaker 6:

Thank you. By the way, who's your daughter? because I want to know if there's any more to the story that we should know.

00:09:21 - 00:09:24 | Speaker 3:

No, no, Chelsea. Do you know Chelsea? Chelsea Stowers?

00:09:25 - 00:09:30 | Speaker 6:

Chelsea Stowers. Not by name alone. I would say no. If I'm your attorney, I say no.

00:09:30 - 00:09:42 | Speaker 3:

If you saw her, you would know her. Just Chelsea, her Instagram. I know you know her because when I told her you were on the show, she kind of gave me your background because I didn't know who you were.

00:09:42 - 00:09:45 | Speaker 6:

Wait a second. What did she say? Was it a good background? We needed to know.

00:09:45 - 00:10:06 | Speaker 3:

background check oh yeah she gave you 100 mark that's why i'm not calling with shade i'm just calling i like that i love you mama daniel let's just say you're a son from another mother and father and i had to call because i heard hurt your mom when she called to highly praise you yes well nice to meet you thank you for calling

00:10:06 - 00:10:10 | Speaker 2:

00:10:19 - 00:10:38 | Speaker 2:

All right, all right. We're piling on you. Are you sure that was a mojo that said it? No, you definitely said it. I said Earth, Wind? Here's the deal.

00:10:38 - 00:10:41 | Speaker 3:

Here's the deal. He's now coaching Mike's kid's soccer team.
