it's the mexican soccer coach mike what's up so my daughter and i don't know if you've ever been uh stereotype based on your looks or your race or ethnicity or whatever immediately and it's like one of those things where it's it's not necessarily true for you specifically but my daughter has just started all her camps she's got a curiosity camp the next couple weeks she's got a soccer camp coming up in like a month and so like some of the parents in that soccer camp have reached out to me and they they said hey would you be interested in like helping like coach like that full-on coach or whatever but like an assistant coach type type of situation And I got to thinking, why would they ever ask me to, like, I've never talked about soccer. I've honestly, genuinely never played soccer as a sport ever, other than maybe kicking a ball in my backyard. And then I'm like, did they think, because I'm Mexican, I'm immediately just naturally good at soccer or that my family history has soccer in it? And they may have asked other dads. I don't know. But it feels like they just went, hmm, well, this guy is Mexican. He must be good at soccer. Is that a thing, by the way?

Usually the people that I know that are really into soccer are usually ethnic of some sort. I see a lot of my Albanian friends also that are into soccer, too.

It's like the number one sport in the world everywhere but here.

The kids love soccer, too. They obviously love it. So you think that they think that you're a soccer player just because you're Mexican?

I don't think they were being rude about it. And like I said, they may have asked other dads, but I think they just went, huh, he probably really likes soccer or is into soccer, so he'd be excited about this.

Do you think that they had like a meeting, a pre-camp meeting, and they said, we need a soccer coach. Ask the kids who got the Mexican dad to come out here and do this whole thing.

The worst is, and I had to coach a soccer team once, but I was an assistant coach, and the head coach didn't know anything about soccer either, and he ended up buying every book about soccer, and he had me come to his house, and we were reading books about soccer. And I said, this team's going to be the worst team ever. And we were sitting around. Like, we were trying to figure out on YouTube drills to do, and things like that, and we went to, like, Dunham's and bought a bunch of, like, little cones to put out there.

I feel like the majority of the coaches, especially when it's, like, T-ball time, Little League, are dads. I remember taking a Josiah to a T-ball, and they were just running around the bases. I'm like, are they ever gonna hit? Like, what are you teaching these kids? At least they run around the beach. They're just running. They just run around the beach. They make sandcastles.

Those are actually smart coaches, though, that make your kids run in the beginning. Make them tired and then they actually kind of pay attention. So, Mike, you're saying that it was the stereotype of you being Mexican that made them think this.

Well, there's a lot of stereotypes that are true. That's why there's stereotypes. But there are some that don't apply to everyone.
