My name is Patrick Pettway, and I am getting my Associates of Science and General Education with an emphasis in business administration. To me, it was a no-brainer. When you go out here and you're looking for funding to go back to college as a 40-year-old man, I got six people in my household. The extra money just doesn't just grow out of trees. For me to be able to be accepted through FAFSA and to have Bishop State pay for all of my tuition, not only that, but the curriculums, you know, they make it so easy to understand on their website. Like I said, I'm a 40-year-old man, so I don't use technology too much, but it was very understandable where I needed to go. It was extremely fast these past two years. Things have just moved in a total different type of way. It's like its own moving entity to see things manifest the way that they do.

So I have some friends who are lesbians. Lesbians! They have a child together, and that child is about to enter preschool. I don't know about this process, right? So they were telling me about this yesterday and how you have to apply for approval months ago and then hope that you get in, and then there's enrollment and all that other stuff. And this is apparently not a fun process. Yeah, it was, is it a private preschool?

Yes. Okay. Okay, why are you looking at me? Oh, because I was like, it wasn't that hard. I mean, you just like sign them up.

So they signed their child up a long time ago, and Open House was supposed to be yesterday, and they get a call from a school saying hey we're going over your files and um we just have some questions and the first question was you know who am i talking to what's your relationship to the child and they said mother they said who is you know so and so what is their relationship to the child they said mother and they said what is your relationship to this other woman on these forms and they said that's my wife and they said um due to that information we are not looking to explain to children why somebody would have two moms and we are not going to be accepting your child this is the day of open house so preschool starts in a week and they have nowhere to put their child even though they were approved months ago they didn't say we're revoking your child's

enrollment what was their what's their reason because they're lesbians but i know but they

don't they don't want to have to explain this is what she just said i don't agree with this by any needs but they don't want to have to explain to the other children why little johnny has two

mommies so now they're a week out from when preschool is like supposed to be starting and they don't have any daycare options preschool options nannies nothing and now their child is going to be essentially if they can't get into another preschool a year behind we're we're in

we're in a year where i thought we were way past that it's funny my my kids went to catholic school and there were many kids in that school who had same-sex parents.

And if that is your case, we started venting yesterday. I'm trying to stay calm right now. There are divorced parents there. There are unmarried parents there. There are lots of stuff. So it just seems kind of like a pick-and-choose-your-kind-of-views on this. Because if you're going to go by this, which it is a private institution, I'm not trying to justify this, it makes me very angry. but be fair across the board and and hold to those values with all sorts of couples um that break your rules and not just one kind of couple that breaks absolutely and quite frankly whether you agree with the school or not don't do it this late in the game when you've already said yes like if you've already said yes and that was the plan

And you're now screwing not these parents, that child of their education and whatever it's going to be, their care while their moms are at work.

And preschool is no joke, like, you know, regardless of the application process, when they fill up, they fill up and there is a capacity. And then you're like in your friend's case, you're scrambling, trying to figure out where there is an availability for one more.

you know it's it's amazing um that in this day and age that that is still going on and it's also unbelievable that it's not illegal for them to do right that's just crazy that's all illegal um and that's wild that they actually verbalized it too like them doing that and saying that to

me is i think it was specifically verbalized and not put in writing for a reason where is this at It's a school in Northwest Ohio.

Okay, so it is in the Toledo area. I wonder what the laws are. Like, I wonder what the law says about something like this. I do, too. Yeah, and I don't know what it is.

Or if the law does not apply to a private institution.

So what is she looking for right now? Is she looking for another option? Is there anybody that can listen and hear this and say, hey, we might have an option?

I would hope so. I think the surprising thing for me, kind of like Mojo, you said, I grew up going to both public and private schools. Like we had kids that weren't even in the faith or, you know, like there were so many different bent rules. I don't even like saying that because that doesn't feel like the right way to phrase it, but it just felt like not that big of a deal. This seems like a weird hill to put your stake into.

You know, it's funny is that there were some, I remember there were a couple of dads that reached out to Chelsea because they knew that we had a gay son and their kids were at Notre Dame Prep where our boys went. And they reached out to Chelsea basically to ask, will we be looked at differently? Because if we are, we're not going to put our child through this. And Chelsea was like, no, it's extremely inclusive. It's a great school. Or, you know, the administration's amazing and stuff like that. and it was one of those things where I think they wanted to know their kid was going to be safe more so than any of the other parents would sit there and say our children are not safe with two dads raising them you know and they're amazing family what's up blaze hi uh I teach at a different

catholic school also in metro detroit and I just also wanted to agree with that sentiment we've I've had students with you know same-sex parents also so i was i texted in to ask like are they in metro

detroit because we've got no she even mentioned it's ohio isn't that crazy and i don't think that is this a is this a catholic organization or just a private i'm not sure okay essentially the school

can get away with it because they're private any like i yeah i'm very frustrated because i do think there should be rules i'm not sure where those lines should be i'm more aggravated it's happening

this late in the game let me ask the uh teacher blazes you know you see this and they're this this particular school in in ohio is acting upon it because they say they don't want the other kids

wondering do kids give a crap no nope definitely not and i've never had it come up before and the

the kids who are there who have same-sex parents do they have any issues at all not not not that

i've seen not at all no i mean i've never even had it come up as a conversation topic i mean

i've been teaching for 13 years it's unreal and with kids because i've noticed this with my own you like if they if smith were to come home and be like you know suzy's mom or suzy has two moms and you're like, yep, you know, you explain and they're like, okay. Like, it's never...

Yeah.

And we have a huge discussion, rightfully so. There's a conversation around bullying. We equally need to keep that same energy for discrimination. Amen. That's great.

My name is Naterika Terry LaMille and my major is General Education. Some of the obstacles I have overcame at Bishop State is proving that I can show up consistently, even when my life was heavy. There are moments where I still feel overwhelmed by balancing work, leadership, parenting, and school, but Bishop reminded me that I'm capable of growth and not perfection, that I'm supported as long as I'm committed to being a better person than I was yesterday. My peers can depend on me. I'm there being poured into, but some of those students don't know that the faculty and stuff are really there for them. So when they don't know that, I'm their resource that explain and show them that they're here to help us.
