The World Cup is underway, and it's been incredible. On our podcast, The Away End, with Daniel Alarcon and John Green, we're talking about the games that have delighted us, the teams that have inspired us, what we're loving and what surprised us, all through the lens of being massive fans of the world's most beautiful game.

00:00:44 - 00:00:58 | Speaker 2:

Daniel, this tournament has been magical so far. There's so much to love, and I can hardly believe the drama that the group stage brought us. And now it's time for us to talk about the teams that are left as the field is whittled down to one World Cup champion on July 19th.

00:00:58 - 00:01:05 | Speaker 4:

It's Mojo in the morning. Zach is here with us right now. Hello. And he's afraid to do this topic. Why are you afraid to do a topic here?

00:02:17 - 00:02:26 | Speaker 7:

I don't know, dude. I really love Megan, and she means the world to me, but, you know, sometimes you've got to call her out. Zach, what is happening right now?

00:02:26 - 00:02:31 | Speaker 5:

I'm about to check the bus schedule this morning for the bus I'm about to be thrown under. Got it.

00:02:31 - 00:02:32 | Unknown:

All right.

00:02:32 - 00:02:35 | Speaker 6:

Hold on. This bus is coming around a couple times, sir.

00:02:35 - 00:02:36 | Speaker 5:

All right. Cool. No.

00:02:37 - 00:02:37 | Speaker 6:

All right.

00:02:37 - 00:02:40 | Speaker 5:

Man, it's been 24 hours. Can I tell the back story on this topic?

00:02:40 - 00:02:41 | Speaker 7:

Yeah.

00:02:41 - 00:03:14 | Speaker 6:

Go ahead. All right. So I took Zach to lunch, okay? We went to lunch, and we were sitting there at lunch, and we were just having conversation, general conversation. And Zach talks about everything that goes on. because, first off, this guy right here is the greatest guy to take to lunch because I can just sit there and eat and let him talk the entire time. It's the greatest. That never happens. And we were talking about how things are going, and he was going on talking about how much fun he's had lately, and one of his most fun things was he went to that Red Wings game in Columbus, the outdoor game in Columbus.

00:03:14 - 00:03:15 | Speaker 5:

We had such a good time.

00:03:15 - 00:03:35 | Speaker 6:

Had a great time. He loved it. So he's telling the story about it, and I said to him, I go, I go, Zach, what was, so what was it like? What was going on? He went through the whole thing and then he slightly threw in a comment that I thought was pretty funny about when Megan is in Ohio, she becomes the Ohio tourism director.

00:03:36 - 00:04:12 | Speaker 7:

I, okay. So I never, there was a good period of time where I was silent during that car ride. How, how, how good of a period of time? Maybe an hour and a half. Damn. and you know on the way to columbus there was a great time where megan was like oh this is where this is this hospital is actually an insane asylum like this is what's going on this is where my best friend lives this is where i was born i'm like oh this is badass sweet did not expect it on the way back home to michigan i was like oh i'm getting i'm getting the full tour

00:04:12 - 00:04:29 | Speaker 5:

So, just so I'm clear, out of everything wrong in the world in today's day, the hill that we are choosing to die on is the being proud of Toledo Park. Got it. All right. This is the hill I will fight to the death on. Let's go, bitch. All right.

00:04:30 - 00:04:37 | Speaker 6:

So, when you were driving there and you got the tour of town of, you know, where Megan was born.

00:04:38 - 00:04:40 | Speaker 5:

Because you went to my house. Yes. Okay. First time ever.

00:04:40 - 00:04:46 | Speaker 6:

And then, you know, the different places, would she show you like her first grade school? Like, what did she show you?

00:04:46 - 00:04:47 | Speaker 7:

Literally, yes.

00:04:48 - 00:04:59 | Speaker 5:

You have to join by it. You have to join by it. To be fair, my first school was about 100 yards from my house. It's very close. We used to walk to school.

00:05:00 - 00:05:12 | Speaker 4:

And so you're driving there, because it's a four-hour drive, right, between here and Columbus. You get to Columbus, you're there, everything's good, you're on the way home, you're thinking, this is all over with. Yes. And the tour continued.

00:05:12 - 00:05:15 | Speaker 1:

I swear to God, dude, it did not even stop.

00:05:15 - 00:05:18 | Speaker 4:

Did you take a different route or something on the way back? So I don't know.

00:05:19 - 00:05:19 | Speaker 1:

No, we didn't.

00:05:20 - 00:05:21 | Speaker 4:

You did. Okay, so that makes sense.

00:05:22 - 00:05:41 | Speaker 3:

Was that on purpose, Megan? Was that on purpose? No, there's a lot of construction going on right now. Yeah. That makes sense. There's a whole intersection. Essentially, if you're trying to get one direction on 75, you have to go all the way out to Waterville and turn back around and loop through. So, yes, there's two different ways. We went to Columbus one way and came back another.

00:05:41 - 00:05:52 | Speaker 4:

So Zach was telling this story. And one thing I have noticed with Megan, anytime we get a Toledo listener that calls in, shout out to everybody who listens to us on Kiss. Number one. Number one.

00:05:52 - 00:05:54 | Speaker 3:

You have to long if you keep treating them like this.

00:05:55 - 00:05:57 | Speaker 4:

No, no. They're not going to want you there. I'm not treating them.

00:05:57 - 00:06:02 | Speaker 3:

i'm treating you y'all are prepping that i'm proud of toledo all right they'll call up they'll

00:06:02 - 00:06:21 | Speaker 4:

call up and they'll tell megan they'll tell megan hey hey man yeah hi megan how you doing i'm uh i'm calling from uh you know uh wherever i'm calling from sylvania sylvania and megan will go are you are you by the mcdonald's over on the you say that but literally last segment kev did the

00:06:21 - 00:06:36 | Speaker 3:

same thing what i do you did we were talking about kroger and you're like oh the one right next to the... Oh, yeah. To the outback. So, just so I'm clear. It's okay when y'all do it about Detroit, but when I do it about Toledo, not okay.

00:06:36 - 00:06:37 | Speaker 4:

It is...

00:06:37 - 00:06:40 | Speaker 3:

Wait, no. Justify it. Justify it.

00:06:40 - 00:06:48 | Speaker 4:

No. Well, then all you guys are wrong because you guys have to... You guys are very proud of the places that you are, but sometimes...

00:06:48 - 00:06:57 | Speaker 3:

Are you not proud of Chicago? Mr. Chicago. You know what is great about Toledo? I don't have to refinance my life to afford to live there.

00:06:57 - 00:07:08 | Speaker 4:

Chicago, are you talking about the Windy City, the home of the Chicago Cubs, the place where, where, I don't know enough about it.

00:07:10 - 00:07:15 | Speaker 3:

There are two. I hate it. There are two. You can do it.

00:07:15 - 00:07:28 | Speaker 2:

Lovers from Ohio or a 21 Pilot song. Yeah, this is not Ohio. On a Friday night, it's the Coors and the Coors and the Coors. What part of Ohio is that? I literally, no. New Cleveland Rocks.

00:07:28 - 00:07:29 | Speaker 1:

Yeah, it's happening.

00:07:30 - 00:07:36 | Speaker 3:

Okay, but here's the thing. The song's about Ohio. There are two people that hate Toledo. And I will, this is truly.

00:07:36 - 00:07:40 | Speaker 1:

Oh, man. Stop, keep talking.

00:07:42 - 00:07:47 | Speaker 3:

If you want to make a good point, let's drown her out.

00:07:50 - 00:08:04 | Speaker 1:

as you were saying you were born there are two people there are two kinds of people that hit on

00:08:04 - 00:08:09 | Speaker 3:

truly this is a hill i will die on number one people that never go there and number two people

00:08:09 - 00:08:14 | Speaker 4:

who have never left there but it wasn't it wasn't toledo it was the whole state right it was a whole

00:08:14 - 00:08:30 | Speaker 3:

i don't want to be in the middle of this whole state i'll throw fists on this one the whole state is farmland i know this didn't happen for the majority of the drive it's a very populated state and they all live in four cities the rest nothing what's going on jennifer how you doing

00:08:30 - 00:08:52 | Speaker 2:

nothing but fields hey good morning guys good morning i lived in ohio for most of my life i moved to michigan right before high school and i went back to school i went to ut and um i do the same thing when i go back to ohio like this is where i went to school this is where i lived so maybe it's an ohio thing but y'all leave me alone and here's what i love that i did not know was a

00:08:52 - 00:09:11 | Speaker 3:

toledo thing we don't ask where you're from we ask where'd you go to high school that shows you how much we love like where we're from like if you could tell me where you went to high school i know what your favorite restaurant was i know where you and everybody hung out after the football game i know everything i need to know about you what do you know about the people from Notre Dame. I hate Notre Dame. They're my rivals. I went to see the nurse's life.

00:09:13 - 00:09:23 | Speaker 4:

Hey, Chelsea says that every time we go back to visit my family in Orland Park, Illinois, that I always have to take

00:09:23 - 00:09:25 | Speaker 3:

the kids by my grade

00:09:25 - 00:09:29 | Speaker 4:

school, you know, the church I was baptized in, the hospital

00:09:29 - 00:09:37 | Speaker 3:

I was born in. This happens every time we go to any suburb of Toronto and Wes is like, this is Brampton. This is the movie theater where Jason Wildman lost his virginity

00:09:37 - 00:09:39 | Speaker 2:

in the parking lot. It's very normal.

00:09:39 - 00:09:41 | Speaker 4:

He does virginity, too. I haven't done virginity.

00:09:41 - 00:09:42 | Speaker 1:

No, not him.

00:09:42 - 00:09:55 | Speaker 4:

By the way, can I tell you something, though? When Zach told this story, I said, why did we not talk about that after you came back? And he goes, I don't want to make Megan mad. That was perfect. I said, come on. How would that make Megan mad?

00:09:55 - 00:09:59 | Speaker 3:

What I find interesting about that comment is he cared a...

00:10:00 - 00:10:34 | Speaker 1:

you didn't. No, what I love about him is I love the fact that he had a topic, and he saved that topic because he was like, I don't want to do this thing. I go, that is the funniest freaking thing ever, because it's so true that Megan is the... Why don't you run for governor? There's going to be a governor's race. Megan for governor! Come on! Oh, she said Ohio! Miss Huey's on the phone. Megan's former teacher.

00:10:34 - 00:10:45 | Speaker 2:

Oh, I love that you couldn't be like, hey, can we just listen to some music? But you let her keep going. We actually didn't have any music. Yeah, we didn't have music.

00:10:45 - 00:10:50 | Speaker 4:

Which is, I think, a very interesting part of this conversation that was left out. We only had dead silence.

00:10:50 - 00:11:04 | Speaker 1:

Your teacher is on the phone. Come on. Applesauce or whatever the heck it is. How do you keep people quiet? One, two, three. Eyes on me. Clap one time if you can hear me. Miss Huey, Megan's former teacher is calling us. What's up?

00:11:05 - 00:11:13 | Speaker 6:

Well, you guys need to leave Megan alone. Thank you. She is so proud of Ohio, and Toledo is amazing.

00:11:13 - 00:11:20 | Speaker 4:

Thank you. This is why I love you. This is why I appreciate you and why I talked about you last week, why you're so important and you're a good person. What did you teach, Megan?

00:11:22 - 00:11:23 | Unknown:

What?

00:11:24 - 00:11:29 | Speaker 1:

Oh, never mind. Were you her geography teacher? You didn't teach her any other places?

00:11:29 - 00:11:53 | Speaker 6:

I only know Ohio. I don't know anywhere else. No, I'm just kidding. We have the walleye. We have the mud hens. You can get anywhere in Toledo in 20 minutes. We don't have really bad traffic. We have all these amazing metro parks. You can go to, I don't know, we have like 15 of them or something. And that's just a few of the amazing things about the Toledo area.

00:11:54 - 00:12:08 | Speaker 4:

Here's the best kept secret, and you've got to back me up on this one. There is no nightlife like Toledo, and everybody thinks I'm crazy for saying that, but since moving to Detroit, I cannot find a better place to go out and party than I can in downtown Toledo.

00:12:08 - 00:12:11 | Speaker 1:

Interesting. Wow. They opened them up after you moved?

00:12:11 - 00:12:14 | Speaker 4:

And you walk everywhere. Exactly. The Dora district is amazing.

00:12:14 - 00:12:19 | Speaker 1:

Hey, quick question for you, Miss Huey. You sound like you're too young to have been Megan's former teacher. How old are you?

00:12:20 - 00:12:24 | Speaker 6:

Oh, you're so sweet. Thank you. I'm 48. Wow. You do sound super young.

00:12:24 - 00:12:44 | Speaker 1:

Yeah, you sound young. Well, hey, listen, Zach will come and read to your class with Megan if you need anything. I don't know how to read. You just read the signs. Read the signs. Welcome to. Thank you, Miss Huey. Take care of yourself. What's going on, Evelyn? Hi.

00:12:45 - 00:12:46 | Speaker 5:

Hey, how's it going?

00:12:46 - 00:12:49 | Speaker 1:

It's going good. We're just having fun today. What's going on with you?

00:12:49 - 00:13:16 | Speaker 5:

So, you know, a hidden gem of Ohio that people us Michiganders don't know about is us. amish country where you can get the best pies the best bread love it the best donuts yeah the best any baked anything you could want do they have a gas station in amish country is there or no of course not they have buggy um stations where they park their buggies and go into the bank and

00:13:16 - 00:13:20 | Speaker 1:

yeah there's uh they drive around where is amish country compared to where toledo is

00:13:20 - 00:13:28 | Speaker 5:

Like south of Cedar Point If you're heading to Cedar Point You go south of there And you know

00:13:28 - 00:13:31 | Speaker 2:

I've been to Hocking Hills

00:13:31 - 00:13:34 | Speaker 5:

Hocking Hills is amazing

00:13:34 - 00:13:42 | Speaker 1:

Yeah I want to go to Amish country sometime I've always wanted that What's up Poncho What's going on is Mojo in the morning Hi Poncho

00:13:42 - 00:13:49 | Speaker 3:

Good morning First thing Mojo is you can't drown Megan out She's got a beautiful voice

00:13:49 - 00:13:53 | Speaker 1:

Love you Look at you, Poncho. You must be from Ohio, Poncho. I always thought you were from West Michigan.

00:13:53 - 00:13:54 | Speaker 3:

I know. I'm from Grand Rapids.

00:13:54 - 00:13:57 | Speaker 1:

I know. What's going on? What's the story here?

00:13:58 - 00:14:09 | Speaker 3:

And then on top of that, too, Megan's fine with the way she does that because I do that with my old concrete that I used to do. I was like, hey, I did that concrete. I did that concrete. I did that concrete.

00:14:09 - 00:14:49 | Speaker 1:

Oh, you do concrete for a living. So that's interesting. It's so funny. Can I tell you something? With radio is like this, too. whenever you go to another city and you're in a person in radio you always go oh this is uh you know this is nashville that's the home of you know z94 or something like that you gotta listen to it in your rental car uber we're going to dayton ohio home of kiss you know or whatever it's like we always pick out like radio stations and do stuff like that never done that i was because you have only been in radio for a short time give it some time you do sports teams hey we're in Cincinnati. The Bengals play right there. You know, stuff like that. Okay. Yeah, so that's kind of that. We all have it. Alright, Megan, you're not mad

00:14:49 - 00:14:51 | Speaker 4:

at Zach, are you? Oh, absolutely not. Wait till

00:14:51 - 00:15:00 | Speaker 1:
