Since we're talking about the lady parts, I know this is not a really great segue to, you know, but we were just talking about going to the doctor. Cav is the new guy on the show, has had to spend a lot of time in the gynecologist lately as his girlfriend is pregnant. And you guys are going to be having a baby. Yeah. And you had something that you wanted to bring up on the air and ask the listeners about when it comes to having a baby.

Yeah, I love some knowledge. I'm a novice in this area, but the conversation Sherelle and I were having revolved around a doula, a doula, a doula. Yeah, immediately I'm thinking, but a doula, man. So I had no idea. I've never heard of this term prior to my conversations with Sherelle. And then after like quick Google researches, it seems like this person's only job is to be me. So I feel like either I'm not doing a good enough job And that's why she needs a doula Or maybe I don't know what it is But the doula is supposed to be there To be an emotional supporter And be a physical supporter Throughout this entire pregnancy And I've never had any friends Who have given birth, have a doula I don't have anybody in my family That's ever had a doula But it seems as though it's something that Sherelle really wants And this is her first pregnancy So I'm there and I'm just yes, yes baby Whatever you want, whatever you want a doula Let's get you all that stuff But I just would love to hear from people who are either doulas or people who have had the doula experience, whether it was good or bad, and just tell me, like, what's up? Is a doula, like, a pregnancy hype man? Because that's what it sounds like.

Kind of, Mike. So one of my really good friends, Kirsten, is a doula. And actually, Kirsten, if you're listening, call because she can give you, like, all of the information. But she loves doing it. Like, she's usually a part of, like, the entire pregnancy. Like, she's there the entire time to provide support to the mama.

I feel like doulas just came out recently, too. They're like gluten.

Like, where was it?

It's a fad thing. I don't think it's a fad. What is wrong with you?

You know what's interesting is that it does kind of say to you, doesn't it, Kev, that Sherelle's going to need some support, and she's not thinking that you are maybe able to do that.

Are you guys doing a hospital birth or a home birth?

A hospital birth. She's going to need all the epidural and all that stuff. Plus, again, she has endometriosis, so it's going to be a difficult pregnancy.

I like how Mike called the hype man, but it's also kind of like a wedding party planner. Like you're maybe, I don't know, setting up the stage for you guys. What's up, Michelle? What's happening?

Good morning. Hey, talk to Kev. Well, I have a 10-month-old, and so I gave birth not that long ago, and I wanted a doula so bad or a midwife and i couldn't have one because of covid restrictions so i had my mom in the room and my husband and my husband is probably the most supportive person ever however he's still not a woman and he still doesn't have lady parts so it was helpful to have my mom there but she also wasn't a doula but i did follow the naked doula on instagram who i would highly highly highly recommend yeah the naked doula and she helped me get in like a really good mindset for birth which is something that i didn't even know i needed to have so while you were in the delivery room you were watching yeah yes and no she actually had some weird hoodoo stuff i don't know the right wording for it but it was like woo woo things

help you like almost like meditate and like get in a really good mindset for giving birth because if you're in like this place of being really scared and all of that it's not as good of an experience and it helps set the mood in the room and all these kinds of things and she actually makes you think of giving birth almost like having or baking cookies which is kind of weird

and i will say this with having had three kids the biggest thing mike you know this firsthand too Kev is keep your mouth shut during the entire time Just be supportive And don't be you know Don't be like hey come on girl

I remember I just kept sitting there going Are you okay are you great And I'm like trying to like wipe off her forehead And she just gave me the look like Get away Tanya what's up it's Mojo in the morning Kev wants to know about a doula

good morning the doula was the most amazing thing ever um i've had three pregnancies my last pregnancy was i had a doula and she made it so much easier much more calm and relaxed and it

was much easier to get birth when when does a doula come into play like are they like at what point do you introduce the doula are they only there during the birth do they come to appointments with you? When do they come?

Mine only, I had a midwife and a doula and she came in when I was in actual labor, in active labor.

So it's not somebody that you hang out with for weeks beforehand and it all of a sudden becomes

a really? I don't know if they changed it. Mine was years ago, so I don't know if they changed it.

Okay, so just to clarify, doulas have been around for many, many, many decades. It hasn't been as popular. However, what we do is we support moms. There's different types of doulas. You have postpartum, you have birth doulas, you have those that come in and just support. But really, we just support mom through her entire labor and delivery process. A lot of times we meet with the moms before birthing. That way we get an understanding of what it is that they want their birthing experience to look like. We advocate for them. So if it's in a hospital setting, we make sure they don't get the medications they don't want or the procedures they don't want. They have the option to say no. They can say yes. So it's pretty much support. We support the partners. Whoever their support partners are, we support them.

Do the dads ever get jealous of the doulas? That the doulas have a closer look at the landing spot?

See, with doulas, we don't want to interfere with dad being there. You get what I'm saying? So we want dad to be as involved as physically possible.

So does the dad still get the ability to catch the baby or what?

Absolutely. Okay. All right. Could you imagine if the doula was the one cutting the cord?

Yeah.

I'm sure some dads are squeamish, though.

Has any mom ever fallen in love with the doula?

It's like, how do you think you're in that direction? How?

You know what else doulas do is some women, they want to, like, eat their placenta or have it made into pills. And some doulas will do the placenta encapsulation, too.

A labor and delivery nurse by the name of Morgan's on with us. Do doctors and nurses like the doula? Great question. Are they down with the doula?

Absolutely. Absolutely. We appreciate them, and they're amazing. And I love when women and their partners have one accompanying them in the delivery room. They're just amazing. They're so supportive. And I love how they take much more of like a natural and holistic approach towards labor. I think it's so beneficial for the women.

Do people ever have doulas and midwives or is it one or the other usually?

usually a doula people will hire on their own whereas a midwife is through the hospital

what do you like better doulas or midwives are there are there doula dues

and don'ts like what are the things that a doula should absolutely not do

honestly i can't really think of anything all of my experiences have been great um and i think it was like shannon was saying um they're with you your whole pregnancy supporting you which is great because a lot of the times when you're assigned a doctor like your oe you don't know if they're going to be there for your delivery where you know your doula will be there you know no matter what
