00:00:43 - 00:00:54 | Speaker 2:

And director Morgan Neville. Film school teaches you all the wrong things about making documentary. What do you want to say? Documentary is all about your ear. What do you hear? I feel like my job is listening really, really hard.

Here at the Happiness Lab, we're serving up some hot takes for the summer. Big ideas that just might reshape how you think about your well-being. Like the radical notion that we should get rid of small talk completely.

00:01:42 - 00:01:48 | Speaker 6:

We talk about current events. We talk about what you do for a living. But not, do you love what you do for a living? Is this your dream job?

00:01:48 - 00:02:00 | Speaker 1:

For more surprising ideas backed by psychological science, check out our new series, Happiness Hot Takes. Listen to The Happiness Lab with me, Dr. Laurie Santos, on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.

Ugly Christmas sweater parties are for idiots. There you go.

00:02:28 - 00:02:30 | Speaker 5:

I said it. What is your hatred?

00:02:31 - 00:03:27 | Speaker 7:

Where is this stemming from? All right. So, and there's just some people that are listening right now that probably are like, I just went to one this weekend. All my friends are pissed off at me because I refuse to go to an ugly Christmas sweater party. And for those of you who don't know the origins of Christmas sweater parties, ugly Christmas matter parties the origins were that you wore a sweater that your grandma or aunt knitted for you or gave to you as a gift that you looked at and said this is the ugliest thing ever i'm returning it to jc penny yeah and you wear the thing together and everybody looks and they don't have matching ones at all everybody's just different you're like holy crap oh my god where did they get that one at and it's funny and you all look at each other like that now it has come to where people are going out and spending $70 to $150 on... Thank you. Thank you, Megan. Please. Yes.

00:03:27 - 00:03:30 | Speaker 6:

You've never been more right about anything. What is he right about?

00:03:31 - 00:05:00 | Speaker 7:

And I hate the fact that, you know, if you don't go out and get yourself, you know, the Christmas sweater with Elon Musk or Donald Trump's face on it, or you know, you do something that is, you know, outrageous, where it's got... with the two brothers from... what the hell's the name of it? Stepbrothers. Stepbrothers. Then everybody thinks that you're stupid and i just don't want to do this anymore i don't want to do it it's become too expensive it was supposed to be free and now it's not but how many sweaters that your grandma bought you way back in the day can you even fit well or you go to the thrift store yeah and you pay six bucks for one do you know what i suggested to my friends i suggested i said to them i said guys why don't we do this the lions are kicking ass why don't we do a lion's jersey party and we all show up wearing lion's jerseys or better yet i looked online to see if there's a lion's christmas sweaters actually did you see i posted it in our in our stuff did you see the the picture of the two brothers from stepbrothers but it's dan campbell and jerry goff with a christmas sweater and you can actually put your name on the back if you want to like it's kind of fun i said let's come up with another theme i don't want to do ugly christmas sweaters and if you're like hardcore on this call me up because i would like to debate i'm into thank you megan for agreeing with me on this because i gotta be honest i thought i was gonna come in here and you guys were say you're so, you know, this is the, you got, what's going on with you? I mean, you are a little scroogey, but. I mean, I'm not fully mad. I can understand and support the $100, $200 thing, but Tucci.

00:05:00 - 00:05:27 | Speaker 1:

Two-Change dropped a Dabin' Santa Christmas sweater a couple years ago, and it was fire. I like the switch-up of it not just being grandma ratty-ass. I know, but I'm saying, is it Louis Vuitton or is it Gucci? No, no, no, it's Louis Vuitton. No, if Two-Change made it, I'm saying that he probably did a collab with somebody. No, no, no, it wasn't like that. It wasn't like a designer or something? All profits came back to the trap. Kelly, what's up? It's Mojo in the morning.

00:05:27 - 00:06:16 | Speaker 5:

so i used to go to a bunch of ugly christmas sweater parties and there was one here i didn't have one a couple years ago now so i went to my grandma and i said grandma do you have any christmas sweater she was like oh yeah she had like she collected them and they were like the old school like 60s 70s christmas sweaters that really weren't meant to be ugly but they were ugly yeah and she was like what do you need a christmas sweater for and just like out of conversation i was like well i'm going to an ugly christmas sweater party she was like it's been like six years and i still wear the sweater and i take a picture every year and i send it to her and i'm like i'm still wearing it you gotta tag us see that is beautiful though

00:06:16 - 00:06:27 | Speaker 1:

that is beautiful when you can't tell your grandma or aunt that you wore their sweater at an ugly christmas sweater party you have to just say that you wore it uh liz what's happening and it's Mojo in the morning. Hi.

00:06:28 - 00:06:30 | Speaker 3:

Hi. Good morning, you guys. How are you? Good morning.

00:06:30 - 00:06:32 | Speaker 1:

Bah humbug. What's going on? Good.

00:06:34 - 00:06:53 | Speaker 3:

So I was just mentioning for the ugly flyers, I feel like they're kind of too traditional, and I was just expressing that, like, I really like your idea of the lying jerseys and stuff like that, because I just feel like I just put the ugly flyers. It's just too traditional, and I feel like it's good for people to be optimistic and good with other ideas, so.

00:06:53 - 00:07:04 | Speaker 1:

Yeah. It's cliche. I think it's cliche more than saying traditional. Traditional is nice. It's okay to be traditional. Cliche? Nobody wants to be cliche. She got the strongest windshield wipers.

00:07:04 - 00:07:07 | Speaker 3:

And they're just uncomfortable. Yeah, those are strong. They're very uncomfortable, too.

00:07:07 - 00:07:07 | Speaker 1:

Yeah.

00:07:07 - 00:07:13 | Speaker 3:

You know what I mean? I feel like when I wear them, I feel so itchy. I'm not comfortable. I want to be comfortable and have a good time. Right.

00:07:14 - 00:07:27 | Speaker 6:

So last year, I went to a Christmas jammies party. Oh, that. Glorious. Absolutely glorious. You literally wore your pajamas and your socks or your slippers or whatever. I was 100% on board for that. I love that.

00:07:27 - 00:07:30 | Speaker 1:

Now, that is, you know, cutting edge.

00:07:30 - 00:07:34 | Speaker 6:

You go right home and right to bed. So we're doing something for the holiday. Do we have anything?

00:07:35 - 00:07:39 | Speaker 1:

What are we doing? We're going to a nice lunch. You've got to dress up. Oh, yes.

00:07:39 - 00:07:41 | Speaker 4:

I'm saying we should, like, do something. We can or we can't get in.

00:07:42 - 00:08:07 | Speaker 1:

Quick question for you, unless we decide that we're going to do it something else. But why don't you do it? I will. Well, I'll do it. Let's all do it. Yeah. Let's all do something. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Let's make you wear your Christmas thongs, panties, or boxers. Yeah. Just come with that. Okay. Are you guys all right with it? He's saying all right, so I'd be the only one that showed up. No. Holly, what's up, Holly?

00:08:09 - 00:08:26 | Speaker 2:

Hey there, guys. First time long? Hey. Holly's on the phone. What a festive name for the holidays. Okay. So, Mojo, you don't like the idea of people spending over $60 for a sweater, but you want them to spend over $100 for a Lions jersey. Do you know how expensive those are?

00:08:26 - 00:08:30 | Speaker 1:

Okay, then maybe it's not the cost of it. Maybe it's the premise of I hate.

00:08:30 - 00:08:30 | Speaker 2:

The principle.

00:08:31 - 00:08:36 | Speaker 1:

I can wear the Lions jersey when they're playing in the playoffs or Super Bowl.

00:08:36 - 00:08:38 | Speaker 4:

Cost per wear is much lower.

00:08:38 - 00:08:45 | Speaker 1:

Yeah. Who wears their Christmas sweaters ever again? Grandma. You know what I mean? Oh, Holly left me.

00:08:46 - 00:08:48 | Speaker 4:

Holly was like, you made a good point. Click.

00:08:49 - 00:08:52 | Speaker 1:

Summer, what's up? This is not a festive name. Summer, what's going on?

00:08:54 - 00:08:58 | Speaker 4:

Hi, Mojo. First time on. Hey, I love you. Summer's on the boat.

00:08:59 - 00:08:59 | Speaker 1:

Man, this is good.

00:09:00 - 00:09:05 | Speaker 4:

I just wanted to let you know that I wear an ugly Christmas sweater every day from December 1st till Christmas Day.

00:09:05 - 00:09:07 | Speaker 1:

Oh, geez. How many do you have?

00:09:08 - 00:09:10 | Speaker 4:

I have about 27 of them.

00:09:11 - 00:09:16 | Speaker 1:

Whoa. Do people just think they all are the same, or do they look forward to your new sweater that you're going to wear?

00:09:16 - 00:09:22 | Speaker 4:

They look forward to my new sweater every day. When I go to work, the first thing everybody does is look to see what sweater I'm wearing today.

00:09:22 - 00:09:27 | Speaker 1:

Oh, that's cool. That is kind of cool. I like that idea. Colette, what's up? Hi, it's Mojo in the morning.

00:09:27 - 00:09:38 | Speaker 5:

Hi, good morning. So my friends and I do a Christmas party every year, but we change up our theme. This year, we're bringing pictures of our passed-on grandparents, and we're dressing up like our grandparents.

00:09:39 - 00:09:46 | Speaker 6:

Oh, my God, I love that idea. That is cool. The ghost of Christmas past. Like wigs and all, you're going full force here.

00:09:48 - 00:10:02 | Speaker 5:

Yeah, my grandmother always wore, like, really nice costume jewelry, nothing gaudy. But she, like, always dressed up. Like, her hair was always done. She always wore her hose. Yeah. We call them hoes. Those are her nylons.

00:10:02 - 00:10:13 | Speaker 8:

That's awesome. That is such a cool idea. That actually would be a fun idea to do. Where do you buy hoes? Misfit Ron on with us. We haven't talked to you in a while. On the farm right now, Ron.

00:10:14 - 00:11:00 | Speaker 5:

Well, actually, I was actually driving to Menards to get Christmas lights to hang up at the farm. But I hope I didn't reach my cat for calling. No, what's going on? No, I like this topic. On a serious note, you are for real. I feel like somewhere, like, in the last maybe, like, 10 to 8 years, it got really popular for the Christmas party sweaters, the ugly Christmas sweaters. But I feel like they're not, like, ugly Christmas sweaters. Yeah. You don't do that. But I feel like they're not, like, original, like, Christmas sweaters. They're just, like, the stupid sleigh all day. And they're, like, all inappropriate where you can't wear them to work. Yeah. And it's, like, they're not. Yeah, they got very naughty, didn't they, Ron?

00:11:01 - 00:11:09 | Speaker 8:

What if we did a farm party where we all dress up as either a farm animal or a farmer? Wouldn't that be funny? And we do a Misfit Ron party. Wouldn't that be fun? Lydia.

00:11:10 - 00:11:13 | Speaker 5:

I thought we were having a Misfit Christmas party at iHeart. What happened to that one?

00:11:13 - 00:11:14 | Speaker 8:

You know what?

00:11:14 - 00:11:20 | Speaker 5:

We should have a party where we all dress up like Ron.

00:11:20 - 00:11:24 | Speaker 8:

Better not take that attitude to Menards. Are we allowed to wear Carhartts, Ron?

00:11:25 - 00:11:30 | Speaker 5:

As you're wearing Carhartts. Are you professional or not? If you want to, yes, you earn that for sure.

00:11:30 - 00:11:38 | Speaker 8:

Ron, you guys, the Misfits do need to come. Lydia, do you hate that when we do the Misfits and have them come in one day, the last day of the year?

00:11:38 - 00:11:39 | Speaker 3:

No, we like it.

00:11:39 - 00:11:42 | Speaker 4:

You guys have to do your annual Christmas song.

00:11:42 - 00:11:43 | Speaker 8:

Lydia, can we...

00:11:43 - 00:11:46 | Speaker 4:

Can we at least do it a week before our last day of show?

00:11:46 - 00:11:47 | Speaker 8:

We can do that or we can do it...

00:11:47 - 00:11:48 | Speaker 4:

Wrangling them is very hard.

00:11:48 - 00:11:59 | Speaker 8:

Do it like Monday or Tuesday or something like that of that week. So it's not the last day. Yeah. Ron, yes. Yeah. But everybody's got to dress up as a farm animal, and you've got to be the main farmer, Farmer Ron.

00:11:59 - 00:12:11 | Speaker 5:

They should do a B&E. When Megan was laughing about the Carhartt, I seen Megan out there doing the Salvation Army bell ringing out there in the cold. She deserves that Carhartt. Yeah, she does.

00:12:11 - 00:12:15 | Speaker 8:

Because you know Ronnie hates when people wear Carhartts that don't work.

00:12:15 - 00:12:18 | Speaker 4:

What if we had the Misfits Christmas Carol on Jingle Ball stage?

00:12:18 - 00:12:25 | Speaker 8:

Oh, that would be great. Oh, my God. You know what, though? That's too hard to put for tomorrow, though. Let's have them just go door-to-door in Eastern Market, Carol.

00:12:26 - 00:12:28 | Speaker 5:

Oh, my God, please, please, please, please.

00:12:28 - 00:12:31 | Speaker 8:

Have them go to the corned beef place next door and just see what those guys look like.

00:12:32 - 00:12:36 | Speaker 5:

When they go out to their cars for their break, it's just a misfits out there just bombarding them with Carol.

00:12:36 - 00:12:37 | Speaker 8:

Kool-Aid lady with her keyboard.

00:12:38 - 00:12:44 | Speaker 5:

And instead of, like, the bell that you're ringing for, like, jingle bells, we can ring the cowbell. There you go.

00:12:45 - 00:13:02 | Speaker 8:

Because you know what we need. The world needs more cowbell, right? He doesn't get that, but I do. That was funny. That was an old reference. That's an old reference. We always need more combo. We need more combo. All right. Ms. Fitz and Ryan, we'll talk to you later. We'll see you, buddy. Okay, bye, buddy. Okay, bye, buddy. Bye, buddy.

00:13:03 - 00:13:30 | Speaker 3:

00:14:16 - 00:14:28 | Speaker 3:

It's that, and then there's everything else. Dude, his whole life has sounded like the first drop of a roller coaster. I mean, I can't even tell you, Paul, how crazy it was. It was insane.
