information i gotta be honest with you i'm excited that uh the week is almost over i'm excited that But, you know, we can hopefully get some semblance of order around here. It's been just craziness, some healing. It's been an unbelievable week. Yesterday I had a conversation with, through text, with Kaylin, who is on the Fred show. She used to be one of our interns. Do you remember Kaylin? Yeah. I know you do. I'm asking Elizabeth. I know you remember Kaylin. She's my neighbor. but um no i was so i was talking to uh i was talking to her through text because yesterday she did uh a segment on her show where she talked about how um her sister's a yes is a student over at michigan state and she was talking about how her sister had to shelter in place with friends And they actually were all, you know, there right in the heart of the union when this was going on. And just how traumatizing that was for her to, you know, and for all those kids that had to do that. And those kids, you know, are all unbelievable. They should all be commended for how they followed the orders to shelter in place. And it helped the police to be able to do what they had to do. So, long story short, it has really affected Kaylin as a sister because she wants to be there with her little sister. And I can't imagine, you know, just how much this is, if it's affecting, you know, somebody like that. It's affecting everybody. It's affecting relatives. I've gotten people reaching out to me all the time thinking that Luke's going there because they knew that we told you that he was going to go next year. and then people that were telling me about their family members. And then we found out that the other day that we may know one of the people that's in the hospital right now, and I don't want to speculate at all, but it's obvious that their families have been kind of MIA and not talking to people, but friends have been telling us to say some massive prayers. Oh, there's a news conference right now that we told you that we were going to try to see if we can find out more information. This is a news conference on when there will be, they'll be back to school.

I serve as the interim president at Michigan State University. And through the tragic week that we've all experienced, we thanked many people who have been instrumental in the response and the recovery to Monday night's horrific events. And one group that we haven't yet thanked is the media. And so at the outset today, I want to offer my thanks on behalf of a grateful university to all of you who helped spread the photo of the shooter on Monday night that led to the tip that came in and the conclusion of this event. You helped our community, you helped our state, and you helped our nation stay informed and and allowed us to be more transparent as we all worked and walked together on this pathway. So I wanted to begin today just with a thank you to everyone in the media for helping to spread that essential and timely information. Others today in this news conference are going to provide updates on the investigation and law enforcement matters. And so my comments are going to be brief and they're going to focus on three areas. where are we now, what's next, and the process that's going to guide our decisions as we move forward. As you'll soon hear, the five students at Sparrow are still in critical condition, but I'm pleased that we are seeing some songs. of improvement in some of our students. And our Spartan Nation continues to send good thoughts to each of them, to their families, and to the doctors and nurses at Sparrow Hospital. As I've said before, grief is a profoundly personal thing and we know from trauma experts and from talking to colleagues at other universities who have experienced similar tragedies, everyone grieves differently and the recovery process isn't linear. So each member of our campus will have different needs and our focus is on providing as much flexibility as possible in supporting the diverse needs of this campus community. So as we move forward, I ask the campus and everyone in our Spartan community and extended family as represented here to provide empathy and grace. And the knowledge that each person's support may be different and we will be considerate of that. I'm extremely grateful for the quick actions that we've had pulling together the many counseling and support services this week. We know that many in the community will continue to need services for months to come and that some haven't reached out yet. But I am encouraged and can be reported that hundreds of students have already utilized our counseling services that were provided at the Hanna Community Center or in our residence halls. We also provided a service to employees

that is called Reflect and Connect. And we're looking into training for supervisors as more faculty and staff begin returning to positions today and into next week. We are encouraging empathy and patience and an atmosphere for all to recover at their own pace and will continue to offer these services into the future. Today, MSU is resuming standard operations after 48 hours of being in modified operations. While we are returning to standard operations, classes remain suspended through Sunday. This standard operations means that the university offices are open, but in this case with wide latitude provided to supervisors across our university network. The two buildings, Berkey, remains closed for the remainder of the semester. The second building, the Union, is still being evaluated for decisions to be reported later. FBI Special Agent in Charge of Michigan, Jim Tarasca, will report in just a moment on access to those buildings for students, faculty, and staff who still have...

That's actually big news because now that means all those classes that are in Berkey Hall, which, by the way, is one of their biggest buildings for academic buildings, where they have the massive rooms that they need to provide. So they're going to have to use other facilities for that. So a lot of people were wondering what they were going to do with both of those, and two of the fatalities took place at Berkey Hall. So it sounds to me like the union might still then stay open. Um, or take some time to open, but we'll open after this, but all right. So we'll, we'll continue to monitor that and we will continue to monitor exactly the investigation by the police and the FBI. And you heard, if you were just tuning in right now, the five that are at Sparrow hospital are still in critical condition. So they're still in critical condition. So still, uh, continue to, uh, to be thinking and, and, and, you know, praying for those, uh, those families.
