all right it is the mojo in the morning show uh you know i want to spend just a couple minutes talking about this because of uh i just could not imagine as a dad and i know uh shannon with your children and Mike with yours, you could not imagine no matter what the ages of your children ever having yourself outlive them. And I don't know if you saw the news that came out yesterday, but Dan Gilbert, who's always been a friend of the show, Dan Gilbert is a guy who, you know, spent a lot of his own money to rebuild the city of Detroit. He is a guy that, you know, has loved the community for a very, very long time. He's gone through tragedy himself by, you know, having a stroke, and now I know he's in a wheelchair. And this family has, you know, definitely, you know, had their times of good times, but has definitely had their time of really bad times. Yesterday, their 26-year-old son, Nick Gilbert, who is a really good friend of this radio show, um nick died nick had been battling since he was a young kid um since he was a baby nf which i don't even know how to pronounce the thing neurofibromatosis thank you for saying it but it is something that causes you to have tumors growing on you and i'm not going to say he lost his battle with, uh, with NF, I'm going to say that he decided, you know, and, and it was time for him to, uh, to kind of, you know, go to a better place. And he ended up passing away. And I just feel for Dan and for his wife, Jennifer and for their children, for, you know, Nick's, uh, um, siblings, because, um, you know, we would always hear stories about Nick all the time. because Nick was a very, very out-in-the-forefront type of a young man.

It's such a personality. And if you were a Cavs fan, you knew exactly who Nick was.

Oh, he was awesome. He was actually the reason why the Cavs ended up getting that number one pick, which was Kyrie Irving, who they ended up picking. So our condolences go out to Dan and to Jennifer and to Gracie, Grant, AJ, and Nash on Nick's passing and it was just a few months ago that Nick and I were just in communication. We would talk fairly often every time I saw him. I actually would see him all the time, and I used to actually say to Nick all the time, you are like Zach Galifianakis to me from The Hangover because every time I see you, you always make me laugh and you are always in a happy mood. And any time I would ever see Zach Galifianakis on television at all, he makes me laugh and he puts me in a good mood. And I think a lot was I knew what Nick's heart was all about and I knew that he lived life to the fullest and I knew his friends and his brothers and his sister's friends loved him dearly. So I want to play for you guys just something real quick because this says it all. We had Nick on with us in studio the day after the Cavs got the first pick in the draft.

Do you guys remember that when Nick was the guy that was picking the card out, and he was the good luck charm, and then he did it to bring awareness to NF, which is what he battled? Nick came back from Cleveland, came into our Farmington Hill studio, had him here, and then had his dad, Dan Gilbert, on the phone with us. Dan didn't even realize that he came into the studio because Nick actually skipped school to come and hang out with us. I thought that was really special that you said about Nick. Nick is your hero?

Yeah, I mean, Nick, you know, Nick's a special kid. He's obviously had a lot of challenges his entire life, and he's overcome a lot of odds and a lot of things.

And, Dan, when did you guys, when did you and your wife find out that Nick had this?

Well, he was 15 months old. Neurofibromatosis is a genetic condition. One in 3,000 people are born with it. Nick has, he's had brain surgery, removing tumors. They're typically benign, but they can be, you know, otherwise. Sure. His has been benign his whole life. But he's had to handle it, he's had four rounds of chemotherapy and brain surgery, he's overcome it all. He's never complained a day in his life, and he's really been an example for everybody. We're real proud of him, and obviously he's got the odds going for him in a lot of ways.

I want to ask you a question because, you know, here you are. We see you in the light of this guy that, you know, started this company from nothing with Quicken Loans and then ended up buying this franchise, and, you know, you pretty much have accomplished a ton of stuff business-wise in your life. life, I'm assuming that Nick's conditions that you guys have dealt with, you and your wife have dealt with, and you sit there and think to yourself, man, why me? Why me? And that's got to be that some of the toughest thing as a dad to see your son go through, right? Yeah, it is, but you know,

when you have a kid who himself doesn't say, why me, you know, it's real hard for a parent to say as well, right? And he never has said it. And, you know, it's just an example for everybody. I mean, you know, wealth or money, it's really meaningless in the long run here, right? It's just, you know, And none of that's going to buy you health. And so the point of the matter is that it's all about, you know, people. And it's all about doing the right thing. And, you know, and it just, it was so great to see him last night up there because his serendipity, you know, it all came together and we're proud of him. And, you know, he raised a lot of money in something that maybe you wouldn't think normally is something that you do it with. So, you know, there's a lot of threads and things and ideas that could be right around you that you just don't even realize if you think about it, you can leverage it into good things.

It feels really good. I mean, as I said last night, what's not to like? I love it.

What a great kid. Our prayers again to the family. I can't imagine what they're going through, and I can't imagine what Jennifer's going through because she's had to stay strong with even Dan in his battle. We'll be right back.
