The World Cup is underway, and it's been incredible. On our podcast, The Away End, with Daniel Alarcon and John Green, we're talking about the games that have delighted us, the teams that have inspired us, what we're loving, and what surprised us, all through the lens of being massive fans of the world's most beautiful game.

00:01:00 - 00:01:14 | Speaker 7:

Daniel, this tournament has been magical so far. There's so much to love, and I can hardly believe the drama that the group stage brought us. And now it's time for us to talk about the teams that are left as the field is whittled down to one World Cup champion on July 19th.

All right, it's Mojo on the morning show. So you were looking through some pictures, Megan, and you saw something very interesting.

00:01:43 - 00:03:30 | Speaker 4:

It's so funny that you just brought up Irish off. I need to learn how to say that right because I'm not used to it yet. Ionia, because I, you ever get those like pop-up reminders for like memories on iPhone? Oh, yeah. How do you sound good? I was just about to say, how do we change the setting? The way that every time I open up my photos apps, it has my exes and my brother's exes pop up first every single time. Or my dead cat, literally, it is the most traumatizing app to open on my phone is the photos app. But anyways, this had like one of those, like, do you remember when? Great memories. And it was Shannon and I, and I am hammered. Now, if you listen to this show all the time, you know, I really don't drink ever. Um, and I get drunk once a year, sometimes twice a year if there's like a wedding or a special event or whatever, but I just don't, I don't like getting drunk very often. And every year for St. Patrick's Day, I'm with you guys and I always am clinging on to Shannon for dear life. Like, I think I pierce your arm with my fingernails, staying latched onto you all day because I believe in the drunk buddy system. and I'm also the drunk that all I can do is tell you how much I love you and how much I appreciate you and how pretty you are and just, you're such a good person and I don't tell you enough how much I value you in my life and then I end up crying. And it had me thinking, I don't, every year we end up in a bathroom somewhere, you're trying to pee, I'm holding onto this thing for dear life crying telling you that I love you and you're like, can I just pee in peace? but I'm curious what kind of drunks you guys are oh so you're the I love you drunk isn't that

00:03:30 - 00:03:52 | Speaker 5:

called yeah the crying I love you so the crying I love you drunk yeah you're the one I can tolerate for probably about maybe an hour and then after an hour and then it's done I like that I that to me I am I'm usually I'm the huggy drunk I'm the touchy-feely drunk it gets a little I know it gets bad that that's usually my kind of drunk the worst drunk was a guy friend of mine and he got drunk

00:03:52 - 00:03:58 | Speaker 4:

one time and he was the violent drunk no the guy who wants to be a bro and get into a fight

00:03:58 - 00:04:07 | Speaker 5:

he like he literally you looking at me like he does that whole thing you know like no dude that guy's like a nice guy a couple minutes ago we were all hanging out being nice with him now you want

00:04:07 - 00:04:30 | Speaker 2:

to beat his ass what kind of drunks are you i feel like i feel like uh my default setting is probably like I'm already a friendly person it's crazy because I feel like whatever mood I'm in at the time the alcohol just enhances that mood so if I'm chilling I'm gonna become super chill if I'm loud I'm gonna become louder I think it all depends on who I'm around but I think everybody

00:04:30 - 00:04:39 | Speaker 4:

gets hornier when they get no that's unstable I don't like that what do you mean because you I you need to have a reliable drunk version of you and you don't have a reliable drunk version

00:04:39 - 00:04:42 | Speaker 2:

Whatever I am at that moment is going to be, like, compounded.

00:04:42 - 00:04:59 | Speaker 4:

But you can't trust that. At least if you're a violent drunk, you know, like, I shouldn't get drunk around. Ever. These people. Ever. No, yeah. You be right. But if you're, like, a lovey drunk or a crying drunk, you're like, all right, I shouldn't be around so-and-so because I might tell them how I really feel about them. Yeah. It's not always nice.

00:05:00 - 00:05:21 | Speaker 7:

I was going to say, I feel like I turn into, I think I'm Simone Biles when I'm drunk. I want to just do gymnastics all the time. And lately, though, I feel like I'm the overly vulnerable drunk where I want to just get really deep and tell you everything going on in my life. And then the next morning I'm like, ooh, F, F, F, F, F, F, F, F, F, F, F, I said too much.

00:05:21 - 00:05:31 | Speaker 6:

But then you got to tell me because I don't remember any of it. I know that we had a deep talk, but I can't tell you any of the details. You ever do that in your head where you're like, you have to remember this. This is like, this is important. And then the next day you're like, nah.

00:05:31 - 00:05:44 | Speaker 7:

Do you do the thing where you wake up the next morning and it's like, I call it taking an inventory. I'm like, why do I feel this way? And then you go back through like conversations you had or whatever. And that's, yes. And you're going, oh, crap.

00:05:44 - 00:05:57 | Speaker 6:

Do you know, I got so drunk one time. I knew I was having one of those really important conversations that I wasn't going to remember. So I opened up my notes apps and I was taking drunk notes during the conversation that were still in coherent the next day.

00:05:57 - 00:06:22 | Speaker 3:

No. Oh, I'm so excited, you guys. My favorite is the denial drunk, the person that you go, man, I think you had a little bit too much. And then I'm okay. They're denying it the whole time. And then a buddy of mine always tells me that I'm not just always the happy drunk or the huggy drunk. I am sometimes the sleepy drunk where all of a sudden I fall asleep randomly, especially if I'm drinking Monday through

00:06:22 - 00:06:37 | Speaker 7:

Friday. You are the, you want everybody else to know that you are drunk drunk. Oh yeah. And it's usually and this is not an exaggeration. It's after about four sips of your first drink. Oh it is. And you'll go, I'm feeling kind of tipsy. Okay. Ready?

00:06:38 - 00:06:51 | Speaker 6:

Chew. But most of you have to admit that you have very little patience in general And I love drunk you because drunk, at least sober you is like, I should tell people I'm leaving, but drunk you just goes, I'm over it.

00:06:53 - 00:06:58 | Speaker 3:

What's up, Julie? How you doing? We're talking about the types of drunks and we're getting prepared for St. Patrick's Day. What's going on?

00:06:59 - 00:07:00 | Speaker 1:

How are you?

00:07:01 - 00:07:03 | Speaker 3:

Doing good. What kind of a drunk are you?

00:07:04 - 00:07:13 | Speaker 1:

I, everyone is my friend. I have to be friends with everybody when I'm drunk. I, I'm very happy and I love everybody.

00:07:13 - 00:07:19 | Speaker 3:

Do you ever get to a point, if people deny your friendship, do you get sad then and turn into a sad drunk?

00:07:21 - 00:07:22 | Speaker 1:

No, I just go to the next person.

00:07:23 - 00:07:29 | Speaker 3:

Oh, yeah. You just kind of make your way around the room. I actually kind of like that. That's not a bad one. What's going on, Luba? How are you?

00:07:30 - 00:07:32 | Speaker 1:

Luba? Hey, I'm good. Luba. What's up, guys?

00:07:33 - 00:07:33 | Speaker 4:

Hey.

00:07:33 - 00:07:34 | Speaker 3:

The Spanish version.

00:07:34 - 00:07:44 | Speaker 4:

Oh, my God. I am the let's blow money drunk. My phone needs a breathalyzer, because any time I have wine, I just rack up that credit card bill. Oh, that's it.

00:07:44 - 00:07:48 | Speaker 3:

That is great. What's the craziest thing that you ever purchased when you were drunk?

00:07:49 - 00:07:57 | Speaker 4:

Oh, my gosh. Like, a two, no, $2,500 Taylor Swift autograph. Oh!

00:07:57 - 00:08:00 | Speaker 2:

Autograph? Like, just on a picture?

00:08:01 - 00:08:10 | Speaker 4:

Yeah. Oh, my gosh. And, like, yeah, and signed vinyls. Like, I just love, like, autograph stuff. Yeah. Oh, my God.

00:08:10 - 00:08:25 | Speaker 3:

Luba's great. I love this one, too. A texter here says that the worst are the wild or daring drunks, the ones that are willing to take on challenges. They hurt themselves. I like Courtney's kind of drunk. What kind of drunk are you, Courtney?

00:08:27 - 00:08:42 | Speaker 5:

I have always said it's a good thing I don't have a really nice body because I like to flash people when I do drugs. I don't drink anymore, but I still do it even when I'm sober just because I think it's funny. But it's even worse if I was drinking.

00:08:42 - 00:08:46 | Speaker 3:

Why do you say it's a good thing that you don't have a nice body? What do you mean by that?

00:08:47 - 00:08:59 | Speaker 5:

I don't know. I've always joked around and said, you know, I've always been just like a bigger girl, you know? So I'm always like, it's a good thing I don't have a really nice body because I'd probably, who knows, I'd probably dress promiscuous. Dude, I said that all the time. Shut up.

00:08:59 - 00:09:02 | Speaker 6:

I absolutely would have been a stripper.

00:09:02 - 00:09:02 | Speaker 3:

Really?

00:09:03 - 00:09:06 | Speaker 6:

Oh, absolutely. Absolutely.

00:09:06 - 00:09:07 | Speaker 5:

Yeah, for sure. Absolutely.

00:09:07 - 00:09:22 | Speaker 3:

Just take off that close. For sure. We'll see you in Ionia. Yeah, please. Bring the twins. What's going on, Christian? Hey, how's it going, you guys? It's going good. What's going on? We're talking about the types of drunks. You are not the kind of drunk I want hanging out with on St. Patrick's Day.

00:09:23 - 00:09:37 | Speaker 2:

Yeah, normally I think I overdo it. And then there was just one time at my sister's house, I was sitting on my niece's tricycle and just kind of propelled myself with how much I let go.

00:09:37 - 00:09:40 | Speaker 3:

Oh, no. You're the throw-up guy?

00:09:40 - 00:09:47 | Speaker 2:

Oh, yeah. But my wife is passing out one. She's like the wake up from the dead.

00:09:47 - 00:09:50 | Speaker 3:

Really? So she just passes out anywhere? Does that scare you?

00:09:51 - 00:09:57 | Speaker 2:

Yeah, she does. She's like, especially when she says she has to use the bathroom and she don't come back for like six minutes.

00:09:57 - 00:09:58 | Speaker 3:

You're going to send somebody in?

00:09:58 - 00:10:00 | Speaker 2:

She's going to sleep in the bathroom. But then she wakes up.

00:10:00 - 00:10:02 | Speaker 8:

wakes up, like, ready to keep going.

00:10:02 - 00:10:05 | Speaker 6:

Yeah, I like that. That's my kind of drunk. No, don't scare me.

00:10:05 - 00:10:06 | Speaker 7:

I like that.

00:10:06 - 00:10:09 | Speaker 6:

Zombies. April, what do you call yourself? What kind of drunk?

00:10:10 - 00:10:22 | Speaker 7:

I call myself an intermission drunk. So I like to, yeah, I like to get drunk, and then I'll disappear for like 20 minutes, pass out somewhere, come back in, and it's game time again.

00:10:22 - 00:10:30 | Speaker 6:

That's exactly like his wife. That's funny. We're going to have to call that. That's an official name, the intermission drunk. That's awesome. Kelsey, what kind of a drunk are you, Kels?

00:10:31 - 00:10:49 | Speaker 9:

I am the therapy drunk. I like to provide therapy to everyone. I love you. Oh, my gosh, my life is so hard. And I'm like, no, you're doing so well. If I was in your shoes, I would be doing the same thing. Oh, I'm like that consoling drunk.

00:10:49 - 00:10:52 | Speaker 8:

You're the drunk I actually want to swing on.

00:10:55 - 00:11:10 | Speaker 9:

I hate myself being that person, too, Cause I, cause like, I don't, what did I say? I don't even know what I said. So it's just like, I, I I'm winging it just as bad as they are, but I'm drunk thinking that I'm like hot stuff, knowing what I'm talking about.

00:11:10 - 00:11:15 | Speaker 6:

That's incredible. I love that. I love Renee. What kind of drunk are you?

00:11:16 - 00:11:38 | Speaker 8:

Good morning. Morning. Um, let me preface this with, I haven't drank in a really long time, but I'm kind of the three stage drunk. So I start out with balls of steel. do anything crazy then if tequila is involved i'll become kind of the violent angry drunk and then as the night goes on i become the sad and remorseful drunk oh my god so you have levels

00:11:38 - 00:11:58 | Speaker 6:

of drunkness yeah and what what level got you to quit drinking because it sounded like something got you being married oh okay i would think that would make you drink a little bit more And, Danielle, we were just talking about Megan and wanting to be a stripper. What kind of drunk are you?

00:11:59 - 00:12:14 | Speaker 10:

I take off clothes to wear my bikinis or anything on, and I go around when I'm drunk, and I take a permanent marker, and I have people sign me, and when they ask where, I tell them it don't matter.

00:12:14 - 00:12:20 | Speaker 6:

Wow. Oh, my gosh. So you have people with a Sharpie sign you when you're drunk.

00:12:20 - 00:12:43 | Speaker 10:

yeah i go around say hey you want to find me and they're like okay and then they say where and i said it don't matter where you want to find me at okay i've had it on my boobs i've had it you know everywhere am i the a-hole because i would grab that sharpie and i would grab the back of your head and sign your face so fast so fast i did have someone do that oh geez so okay so hold

00:12:43 - 00:12:49 | Speaker 6:

on so danielle where's the weirdest place that the that the signing started or signing happened

00:12:49 - 00:12:57 | Speaker 10:

uh it's actually up in port huron and no no i'm not talking no i'm not forgetting the first season
