This is the Bishop Statement at Bishop State Community College. We want you to hear what our students, educators, and business leaders have to say.

00:00:37 - 00:01:22 | Speaker 4:

Alan Lee, my major is drafting and design. In high school, I did it since my sophomore year, and I kind of wanted to continue it. It was the only thing I was good at. I didn't want to move to a four-year. I don't think I was mentally prepared. I found Bishop State. They had the program. I met a few people there. I ended up enrolling. The instructor, first I met him, I told him about my background. He said, okay, great, you know about this. He built me straight to work. He didn't let me have any leeway. He pushed me to my limits. So I think that made me choose drafting design at Bishop State and stuck with it. The sport's amazing. All my instructors just want to see me succeed. They want to push me to my limit. They want to see me be the best I can be, get a job, just be as successful as I can be. And I really appreciate all of them. With my degree, as of right now, my plan is to work for the city of Mobile with their urban planning department. And I've already got a job shadow before, and hopefully I will end the ship over the summer. If you choose Bishop, we're welcome to have you any day.

Mojo in the morning. Phone number 844-MOJO, live 844-665-6548. Text is 95500. zero okay so kev's got a situation to uh talk about here this morning uh do you bring your fights and your disagreements between friends and involve your kids into them what's the story kev

00:02:13 - 00:03:27 | Speaker 5:

yeah man uh kind of tough situation i've known somebody for quite a long time uh not one of the core guys that um you all met at the birthday party none of my best friends but somebody i've on for quite a long time. And Josiah has developed a relationship with my friend's child. And the latter part of the years of my relationship with the friend hasn't been the best. And it came to a point where for peace, for safety, we no longer needed to be friends. And I'm okay with separating that. It was a tough decision, but it was best for myself. And that's what I'm prioritizing right now is my peace and the difficult part about that is not only am I separating myself from this friendship but because I'm choosing to separate myself I'm also choosing to separate my son from the friendship that he had with the other person's child and it doesn't come easy because obviously Josiah has developed a relationship with this person but I think there are times when you have to just cut ties with people really and hopefully you know josiah can understand that you know this is one of those lessons where you have to set healthy boundaries

00:03:27 - 00:03:39 | Speaker 6:

is it is it bad enough thing where if josiah were still friends with him like it would bring negative on josiah or are you just doing that because you're better towards him yeah i think

00:03:39 - 00:04:08 | Speaker 5:

um i mean there have been threats that have made you know from both sides it hasn't got physical but i could see it becoming physical um and then the thought of mine just came like you know what if it's those situations where y'all just meet at zap zone and go your separate ways and it's like i don't even i don't even think that's a possibility at this point and i think another thing is it just seems like it's a door needs to be closed it doesn't need to be cracked and i feel like if it's cracked it will allow things to take place that just don't need to take place

00:04:08 - 00:05:00 | Speaker 6:

is this something that has ever happened to anybody has anybody ever uh had a friendship blow up between uh you and somebody else uh and your parents wouldn't let you wouldn't let you hang out with their kids or you wouldn't let your kids hang out with their kids if uh if it's something that's involving you 844 mojo live 844-665-6548 is our telephone number i remember when i was a kid we had neighbors that lived down the street and my dad was not fans of them he did not like them he thought that they were pains in the asses like my dad actually used to call them pain you're they're pain in the ass and i would always go dad what are you saying that for and it was funny because i was friends with their kids and they would all go over there all the time and they would you know we would hang out and i would be like

00:05:00 - 00:05:05 | Speaker 2:

talking to them they'd be like how's your dad doing i'm like he's okay like i didn't want to

00:05:00 - 00:05:29 | Speaker 6:

Thank you.

00:05:05 - 00:05:24 | Speaker 2:

say what's going on because you were aware yeah but when the kids came over to our house my dad was very friendly with them he loved the kids but he just didn't like the parents it's a hard situation but we still hung out with each other so that was kind of so that's where i'm like going oh man that's too bad yeah does josiah ask for this kid does he say um i mean he has but yeah

00:05:24 - 00:05:52 | Speaker 1:

that's the tough part bro yeah yeah i've never experienced it that way but i've experienced it the other way where the kids have something going on like drama between them and it's like my really good friend's kid does it bring any problems between you and a friend we always have said in our like friendship group that we're going to try to let the kids figure it out as much as possible yeah so but but that is really really hard are you showing loyalty towards your

00:05:52 - 00:05:56 | Speaker 2:

kids if you're a kid you know i mean like if you're like yeah but like if if it were lucy for

00:05:56 - 00:06:30 | Speaker 1:

example i and lucy was being you know a jerk i i i'm gonna encourage lucy to do the right thing and say you're you're in the wrong here what if their kid was a bully would you tell your friend that their kid's a freaking bully that has happened oh that has happened and it makes it it's very interesting but i feel like for the most part the my close friend group is very receptive to that and then i have you know other moms that i'm friendly with because my kids are friends with their kids and it's it's a little bit of a tougher situation but yeah medina yes how you

00:06:30 - 00:07:42 | Speaker 4:

doing what do you think um so i my daughter my daughter was about to be 15 now and me and her godmother so imagine how close me and this person were we had a very very strong relationship and we and we actually ended up cutting ties we just were no longer on the same page anymore and that's fine but my daughter was texting her kids and she was telling i found out through the grapevine she told her kids to stop talking to my kids first of all i don't care what we go through as adults those kids have nothing to do with it i my kid is friends with cousins that i don't even talk to so kids have nothing to do with that as long as you know that your kid is in a safe environment at a birthday party or things of that nature then it's fine but i completely understand kevin like having to break that to your child like we are no longer friends and then your child questioning like well why can't i be their kid's friend you know and it's hard and nobody explains that part of adulthood to you and it sucks because it does affect your child but i'm praying for you kev i saw you at the pittsons games on friday shout out so i had a ball so yes but it'll all work out kev

00:07:42 - 00:07:46 | Speaker 2:

I appreciate you, Medina. Thank you. Twyla?

00:07:48 - 00:07:49 | Speaker 5:

Twyla?

00:07:49 - 00:07:57 | Speaker 2:

What's up? Is that you? How are you doing? I said your name like in a question because I know I've before screwed it up. What's going on?

00:07:58 - 00:08:25 | Speaker 5:

I just want to say, Kevin, it took a lot of maturity to decide. You're going to protect your piece, right? But I think that you need to use that same maturity to allow Josiah to be. If Josiah is not unsafe, then allow him to be the kid's friend if he chooses because it takes maturity to choose your piece. It takes maturity to exist with another parent without having that relationship and letting the kid choose. But, again, that's me. I am a parent. I'm also a therapist.

00:08:25 - 00:08:43 | Speaker 3:

No, that's an incredible point, Twyla. I can only do so much, though. And in a situation where I can't control how the other person responds or how the other person acts, my full energy is to protect my child. And when I can't control the environment, I got to control what I can control.

00:08:43 - 00:09:00 | Speaker 2:

Hey, Twyla, don't you think he should still let Josiah be friends so that he could find out if this guy's talking crap about him? Like, Josiah could be the mole. Come on, Twyla. Twyla, I'm a therapist, too. I don't know if you know that. I play one on the radio.

00:09:00 - 00:09:02 | Speaker 5:

You are a mole, your radio therapist.

00:09:03 - 00:09:08 | Speaker 2:

That's right. Exactly. We love you. Take care of yourself.

00:09:08 - 00:09:09 | Speaker 5:

You too.

00:09:09 - 00:09:37 | Speaker 2:

All right. It is funny, though. You know, all the circumstances that we just brought up, you know, of friends and, you know, when you're a kid and stuff like that. The Shannon one is interesting where when your kids get into fights with kids that are your friends' kids. Yeah. It really can put like a wrench in your friendships. Yeah. Yeah. Because your kids are like, Mom and Dad, you can't hang out with that, you know? You're not being loyal to me, whatever the deal is. I'm like, yeah, but the guy's got a great bourbon collection.

00:09:38 - 00:09:59 | Speaker 3:

like going on but i do like twilight's perspective and i love the relationship i have with josiah where we can communicate and sometimes i think we can be stubborn and think that we know everything and our perspective is the perspective and our kids can really open up our iris and allow us to see things differently and question our own beliefs so we had that conversation he challenged me on some things but we came to the

00:09:59 - 00:10:29 | Unknown:

Thank you.

00:10:00 - 00:10:03 | Speaker 3:

An understanding and an agreement at the end of it that this was what was best. That's good.

This is the Bishop Statement at Bishop State Community College. We want you to hear what our students, educators, and business leaders have to say.

00:10:41 - 00:11:26 | Speaker 4:

My name is Metarica, Terry LaMille, and my major is general education. Some of the obstacles I have overcame at Bishop State is proving that I can show up consistently, even when my life was heavy. There are moments where I still feel overwhelmed by balancing work, leadership, parenting, and school, but Bishop reminded me that I'm capable of growth and not perfection, that I'm supported as long as I'm committed to being a better person than I was yesterday. My peers can depend on me. I'm there being poured into, but some of those students don't know that the faculty and staff are really there for them. So when they don't know that, I'm their resource that explain and show them that they're here to help us.
