Disney's Onward might be the first AI-written animated movie in disguise, and we're breaking down why this magical necromancy tale feels like algorithmic storytelling at its worst. We dive deep into Pixar's most frustrating film, examining its bizarre connections to The Odyssey, Kubrick's AI, and The Shining. From weekend-at-Bernie's-style hijinks with resurrected dad legs to the suspicious 237 Easter egg, this movie serves up occult themes wrapped in what feels like early ChatGPT storytelling. Join us as we explore why this tale of magical technology replacement and failed necromancy might represent the dawn of AI slop in major studio animation.

This entire movie of Onward is about necromancy gone wrong. That's the entire premise of it. Dark black magic necromancy.

00:01:23 - 00:01:37 | Speaker 2:

welcome to the occult disney podcast where we are going onward with disney and pixar movies today it's onward hi it's matt here it's a paranoid american over there how it being

00:01:37 - 00:01:44 | Speaker 1:

i gotta ask you right off the bat did you like this movie um preloaded conversation we did have

00:01:44 - 00:02:07 | Speaker 2:

to talk a little bit before mike and uh as i said to you there are every way this movie tries to relate to you doesn't relate with me uh i know my dad he's still alive at the moment at least uh i have no older brothers i've never been that much into dungeons and dragons sort of stuff or you know like like kind of 80s crazy fantasy like that like the van in this movie so it just

00:02:07 - 00:02:28 | Speaker 1:

like was not ticking any boxes for me i think i'm on the same page as you but there was like this additional thing where it felt like it just kept teasing the entire time and it never delivered on any of the things that it keeps setting up like every single little conflict just gets shut down immediately to the point where like this movie is edging you and there's no release at the end

00:02:28 - 00:02:59 | Speaker 2:

yeah i mean well is it artistic okay jumping straight to the end let's assume that you watched onward or don't care about watching onward if you're listening to this podcast we the whole point is bringing dad resurrecting dad for a day magically we only get him from the from the crotch down um and at the end he's there we see him from the distance through a people that's kind of worse than the contact ending oh by the way i love the movie contact but i still like the south park thing i watched it for two hours it was just her dad you know the joke was great even

00:02:59 - 00:04:06 | Speaker 1:

if i love that movie so usually if we try and do a whole breakdown of like okay here's how the movie gets set up and all this one is super easy to kind of break down so it's like a spoiler alert but the daddy issues the movie daddy issues the movie but there's two brothers the younger brother never got to meet the dad because the dad died before i guess the younger brother was able to really get raised by him and they find a magic spell that'll bring dad back to life for one day 24 hours but the spell goes wrong halfway through so they only get him up to the crotch and they're basically running around with his dad they can't talk or anything just just two legs following him and at the very end of the movie they bring dad back but the younger son that that brought tried to bring him back and it hasn't ever met him before still doesn't get to meet him and he's trapped inside of some rubble and he's just watching his older brother who already got to meet the dad have one last hug and then that's kind of the end of the movie and then like i'm saying that the entire premise it never even delivers on the one thing that it's supposed to be delivering on on top of not really being relatable to mere you personally no they do the

00:04:06 - 00:04:41 | Speaker 2:

the ticking clock at the end. And I think I even remember the number if anyone wants to throw them some Jumanja or whatever, 237. Right. And I'm like, come on, that's, that's, we've already passed any point of this being useful at all. You know, like, I don't know, I guess, again, my, my father's currently still alive. I don't, I don't think I've had a lot of death in my life. That's another place where I don't connect, I guess. I mean, everyone that's died in my life was really old. You know, my grandparents are all dead and they died at ages 87 and up, you know, which, be nice to see them again, But I'm like, of course. yeah, that that's a life, you know?

00:04:42 - 00:04:56 | Speaker 1:

Well, this is a different one. This is, this is wanting to meet somebody that you never actually met. So this is kind of might as well bring anyone back from the dead. And I really, this entire movie of onward is about necromancy gone wrong. That's the entire premise of it.

00:04:57 - 00:05:06 | Speaker 2:

Dark black magic necromancy as well. It's a. curses come with it you know they don't know what they're messing with you know uh the other and

00:05:06 - 00:06:03 | Speaker 1:

these are criticisms that i'm just getting out of the way because there are some interesting like occult backgrounds of the themes that they went with but another one too is that magic exists but the person that can actually do the magic ian the main character that's the younger brother he can do magic but he doesn't know magic and his older brother barley knows magic but he can't do magic in that he's nerded out on dungeons and dragons his entire life so he knows all these dungeons and dragon spells and they just happen to be real things so he's sort of the instruction manual and then ian's the one kind of playing the game the entire time but the logic for what spells do and what the limitations are it just kind of gets made up on the spot like oh we need to shoot a spell oh you know what it only goes 15 feet away it only has a certain rate like there's always these limitations that you find out at the last second and that's the only thing stitching this entire movie together of just all these made up rules on the spot

00:06:03 - 00:06:28 | Speaker 2:

I mean I was taking a walk with my wife right before we started this podcast and she was like so did you like that movie she didn't watch it I watched it by myself but we watched the Truman Show in Casablanca way better anyway she was like what did you think well it wasn't very good but we should have something to talk about because this is I don't know we just did Frozen 2 and you were saying this is one of the more occult movies that disney's done recently like oh this goes in that

00:06:28 - 00:07:39 | Speaker 1:

barrel too i think uh what do you think the the coolest the cool highlight you already beat me too it was the 237 which is obviously the stanley kubrick reference so maybe there's some shining reference because danny's also supposed to be magic and he doesn't know how to wield his power so i kind of feel like ian and dan there might be an ian and danny thing there's twins so that was one angle but the other big one too is the the concept of bringing someone back to life specifically a parent well that and topical because the new odyssey movie is supposed to be coming out from nolan right well that's one of the main um stories inside the odyssey it's in book 11 and basically uh odysseus makes like he uses necromancy to bring people back to life and he tries to hug his mom but she has no body when he goes to hug her and that's that is the literal premise in this movie is that they try to take their dad back from the dead but they can't hug him because he has no upper body right so the rest of it is just this frustrating struggle that never really gets resolved because you can't really bring your dad back from the dead like necromancy

00:07:39 - 00:08:03 | Speaker 2:

has a shelf life on it i also watching this movie i'm like man ai the movie did this 20 years earlier um much more heavy hitting and disturbing that's where um you know haley joel spends what uh 200 300 years at the bottom of the ocean and then the advanced ai find him and resurrect his mom for a day and it's just the creepiest thing ever which is also kubrick because

00:08:03 - 00:08:09 | Speaker 1:

kubrick right had the original screen right for that and then steveberg took it over right and

00:08:09 - 00:08:30 | Speaker 2:

the reviews at the time though really put and this could be wrong but they really put the end of that movie on spielberg they're like well the first hour really does feel kubricky and then it seems to switch to spielberg tracks i kind of see that but the end is i mean at first oh you know like alien looking ai blah blah distant future that feels that feels pretty spielberg i'm like

00:08:30 - 00:09:32 | Speaker 1:

yeah but it's kubrick disturbing at the end great that's such a great analogy for this movie too because it's the same premise and that in this world everything was mad it was an actual dungeons and dragons world where they have mermaids and mermen and fairies and pixies and you know elves and trolls and all kinds like shape-shifting reptilian creatures dragons like dragons are their dogs and stuff but it's like a domesticated version so i guess as the movie's building up it shows you they used to all use magic but in order to learn magic you had to go to like a hogwarts and you had to do hogwart homework and you kind of had to like study and pay attention or someone and just invented a light bulb like they also had the same inventions that humans had so instead of flying around it's like i'll just get in the car i'll just drive there so over i'm gonna guess like a couple centuries maybe everyone loses their magic and no one knows how to use their fairy wings and fly and no one knows how to do magic spells because they're all just using

00:09:32 - 00:10:00 | Speaker 2:

technology instead i'm looking at a quote from effect supervisor vincent uh saratella which just makes it more confusing like he's trying to explain the magic in the movie and like those are just words you put together dude the animator is one of the spells to be something that's abstract but also personify it so they had to converge on the idea of an image of magic go back to the base level of the sequences and the spells and what level of complexity would be given and how it affects the environment those are just words this is

00:10:00 - 00:10:13 | Speaker 1:

saying nothing am i wrong honestly i might be convinced that they had an early version of chat gpt that they were just using to at least come up with the quote for that i my conspiracy theory is

00:10:13 - 00:10:26 | Speaker 2:

that we have all watched movies that were written by ai this could be one of the first ones you know again if you describe the concept to anyone the concept sounds so stupid like oh god that movie must be great and then you watch it no no it's it's as it works as well as it sounded you know

00:10:26 - 00:10:49 | Speaker 1:

the the gimmick and the premise is interesting that you brought back dad but it's only the two legs but it would you would almost want it to advance at some point and not stay there for the entire length of the movie to the point where there's really no ups and downs like you don't really get a hero's journey out of this one right and and you don't even get a full proxy you get

00:10:49 - 00:11:03 | Speaker 2:

half of a proxy where if you really start thinking you're like man that man is living through hell for a day isn't he that sucks i don't want to come back as a pair of legs with no ears and no eyes

00:11:03 - 00:11:49 | Speaker 1:

so like one of the criticisms that i had is that they don't really do a lot of world building and they don't establish what the rules are here's an example is they come up to this crevasse where they're trying to drive and all of a sudden there's just a big cliff and they look over it and they're like oh if you go over this you fall forever i was wondering well what if the dad's legs walked into like over the edge of that cliff he would only fall for as long as the spell lasts and then he goes back to not being a pair of legs anyways right so or and we're never going to have the answer to any of these questions and so many more which is the part where i like they kept introducing interesting dynamics and then it's like okay now let's go to this other thing oh and by the way there's this magic spell that does a completely different uh you know inversion of

00:11:49 - 00:12:15 | Speaker 2:

physics but we're not going to explain that one either here's a weird couple things where i was thinking though um take coco where we have the bureaucratic afterlife which drove me insane this one has none whatsoever so this is a pixar that jettisons that bureaucratic thing because i've been complaining about that in several movies that pixar movies the world building is like this weird bureaucracy or something this one doesn't have that i think this has bureaucracy because they

00:12:15 - 00:12:19 | Speaker 1:

have police and they clearly have laws that you're supposed to abide by and they have all

00:12:19 - 00:12:31 | Speaker 2:

these weird societal but they're pretty close to our society in that way right i mean now i mean we don't have manicors running bars in the real world i think but uh yeah the the other biggest

00:12:31 - 00:12:45 | Speaker 1:

gag in this entire movie that they just run it like once they introduce a gag they don't just let it live and have a quick chuckle it's like now this is part of the dna of the movie so the next one is they go to the old tavern and that's like that's where you're supposed to start your

00:12:45 - 00:12:56 | Speaker 2:

journey is at a tavern right oh and it's like it's like dave and busters i did like that that was great we're going to the magical tavern it's freaking dave and busters it was a good gimmick

00:12:56 - 00:14:13 | Speaker 1:

but then like here's my my complaints to get out of the way and then we'll get into the occult version of the tavern stuff too but the they show up to the tavern it's an applebee's or a dave and busters and they ask for the map to get this you know phoenix stone and when they get the map it's like a children's color it in with crayon kind of like placemat and then they see the real ones on the side of the wall and they go to grab it and the lady that runs it which is a manicore a man eater she's like no you can't have that because you know it's corporate or whatever and i'll get a lawsuit if you go off on this and things so like there's your bureaucracy i glace is like she can't let them go on a quest because it's a lawsuit which i was like man this is really compelling like i'm really loving the the lawsuit angle in this children's movie but they have phones and they have cameras i didn't get like just take a picture of the freaking map and be on your way but of course you like she needs to use that as a point which transforms her back into a manicure where they're like come on let us take the map you know let's go on a real adventure and it just it seems like uh like one of those open games where you're supposed to be able to do anything but you clearly are like oh you're forcing me to go down this road and i can't like jump over this rock because there's an invisible wall here it's like the movie version of that

00:14:13 - 00:14:19 | Speaker 2:

they know you're gonna turn left before you turn right probably right well and if and if you try

00:14:19 - 00:14:36 | Speaker 1:

and turn a different way then like you just run up into like an invisible wall that's kind of it felt like that and that was what they were kind of establishing but the the applebee's angle of the tavern i think was clever and the manicure and having like the special quest like i love the

00:14:36 - 00:14:49 | Speaker 2:

setup of that i guess the basic foundation of the premise of the movie is bureaucratic and something like coco and the monsters movies here we just have to deal with the results of bureaucracy which is a little different i guess you know like you deal with the police you deal with the

00:14:49 - 00:14:59 | Speaker 1:

the hard-ass bar owner you know and they could have leaned in so far so like here's one of the earliest examples of a manicure is from

00:15:00 - 00:15:12 | Speaker 4:

natural history and it's described man-faced lion-bodied scorpion-tailed monster with human flesh so like the version that we get but what we actually see is kind of like a children's book

00:15:12 - 00:15:19 | Speaker 5:

version which we got more of a minotaur i think well like they got the name mixed up a bit yeah

00:15:19 - 00:15:43 | Speaker 4:

and this one was like a lion that has magical wings in a way and it just uh i i think that the the angle that they were going for for the manicure it reminded me a little bit of the evangelion stuff that we were doing where you wonder are they just looking up words as chat gpt just suggesting that you call it this thing but it's not actually connecting the dots to the

00:15:43 - 00:15:58 | Speaker 5:

real thing i really do wonder if this was one of the first experiments of let's try an ai a movie like like we all we all kind of have a spidey sense for ai now and i think for both of us tell me if i'm putting words in your mouth but i think it went off a little for both of us

00:15:58 - 00:16:33 | Speaker 4:

i didn't realize it until we're talking about it now and the fact that you brought ai the movie which has the same premise that we've forgotten the ways of old and relied so much on technology that we can't even recapture our original magic and there were like this child trapped in the world without a father that is exactly the movie ai and it's the movie onward so the fact that onward might have been created with ai it almost seems like there's a meta version of all this so you have to watch ai the movie first and then you can watch onward and see like this is the movie

00:16:33 - 00:16:44 | Speaker 5:

that he ends up making and just to be clear we're making our paranoid guesses about that but i don't know if we're wrong so uh oh another thing that probably got uh we talk voice actors uh

00:17:45 - 00:17:45 | Unknown:

Zaxby's.

00:17:46 - 00:17:55 | Speaker 5:

Tom Honlan is back doing voice acting I don't like. he's ian so i think again love spider-man think he's great in those uh don't like him as a voice

00:17:55 - 00:18:06 | Speaker 4:

actor and i'm doubling down on that now the name sound the name or the voice sounded familiar but none of it really took me in or out of it it's not like a seth rogan where you hear it and you're

00:18:06 - 00:18:28 | Speaker 5:

like oh no halfway in the movie i was like why is this guy so annoying it's like wait a minute is tom holland i suppose i mean it was uh and then and then the uh his older brother is chris pratt and i like chris pratt fine but it's like this role is so jack black was he busy that week or something that's just like why would you not hire jack black for the older brother yeah honestly i

00:18:28 - 00:18:33 | Speaker 4:

didn't even think about that and that would have like converted this movie into a completely

00:18:33 - 00:18:44 | Speaker 5:

different i think it would have been better a lot i mean again i there's lots of things with chris pratt i like but uh i think it's just like dude it was like staring you in the face you know i I guess he was busy at the time. I don't know.

00:18:44 - 00:19:14 | Speaker 4:

You know, for the older brother, the voice and the way that he was animated and just his size compared to his younger brother, he looked like a jock and he sounded like a jock. But then they keep trying to play this gag that he's like a D&D nerd and that nobody else can relate to him. But he really seemed way too normal to be as nerdy as they want. Like Jack Black could have definitely taken that to the next level or someone that was in character doing a Dungeons and Dragons thing. Like this one, you just kind of get an older brother.

00:19:15 - 00:19:45 | Speaker 5:

You meant you already mentioned the Odyssey and there is a deleted scene from this movie that kind of smells a little Odyssey. I'll just it says there's oh, they storyboard this. I guess I didn't actually animate it, but it's Ian Barley and Weldon joining with a goat girl in the joinie joinie goat girl. Jeez. OK, Ian and the goat girl come across a booth hosted by three evil mermaids. The mermaids sing their mesmerizing song to lure the two into staying into one of three houses. book for rent i'm like there's your odyssey reference on the nose that did not make it into

00:19:45 - 00:20:29 | Speaker 4:

the final movie so and and again odyssey i had to look it up odyssey book 11 they literally try and bring back the mom with necromancy and give her a hug but they can't because she doesn't have a body so i feel like the odyssey connection here is Thank you.

00:20:00 - 00:20:05 | Speaker 1:

so we've got ai and we've got odyssey i mean it's top hey like i told my wife we're gonna have

00:20:05 - 00:20:46 | Speaker 2:

things to talk about at least you know um oh yeah uh before you get real deep into the other stuff uh because there's so much magic to talk about but uh this is another one i before we hit record again i was telling you i watched the first 20 minutes of this in 2020 and that's the last time i watched a new pixar movie we're about to watch them all that's part of the reason i haven't watched them i'm like turning red i can watch that when you and i get to it it's fine i live near Nestle pandas i'm looking forward to that one i mean i might hate it but i'm looking forward to it so but uh the pixar timeline doesn't work with this i think i'm sure there's someone online that has a very convoluted explanation why this does fit into the pixar timeline but you'd have to you'd have to really stretch that one well i don't know because there's a couple

00:20:46 - 00:21:14 | Speaker 1:

different uh eras in which cars are lost and then created again right like for example the monsters inc cars are different than the cars movie cars which are different than the cars that are in toy story so each of those represents where one species or one type of like intelligent life fell and then a new one had to be born again and then reinvent all these same themes over and over

00:21:14 - 00:21:20 | Speaker 2:

again right maybe that's the real pixar timeline a history of dominant species being replaced by

00:21:20 - 00:21:49 | Speaker 1:

new ones and the technology that persists regardless because i i think that there might be something to be said that technology itself might be an egregore in that like you can't kill it even if you lose all of the knowledge and information that you've ever collected as a species that eventually something smart enough once it hits a level like this technology egregore will implant itself in somebody's minds like a rosicrucian want desire need thoughts just are

00:21:49 - 00:22:00 | Speaker 2:

like engrams or thetans or just nature right that's the hundredth monkey theory that if uh you know 99 monkeys learn it now all the other monkeys will too you know i don't believe that

00:22:00 - 00:23:09 | Speaker 1:

hundred monkey theory i think that it gets misquoted too often i am quoting it from not having you know uh yeah well no it's it's it's relevant because that's how you lose technology or like dogmas get established but the hundred monkeys theory the woo woo version which i don't know if i which it gets cited the most and i don't know if i believe this interpretation of it was that if if a hundred monkeys on one island or once a critical mass of monkeys know how to do a thing they know how to open a coconut using a tool then spontaneously other monkeys that aren't even related to that initial group will also start to learn it and that it represents this uh like idea that's that's going outside of the monkeys at a localized state right like it's like turning into like a global thought form that other monkeys are picking up i think the 100 monkeys is more that once you teach enough monkeys to do it then they'll just enforce it on any new monkeys that come into the society and no one will remember like why are we even doing this like why like who started these rules but i don't i don't know i don't know maybe i think i have a counterpoint

00:23:09 - 00:23:15 | Speaker 2:

for it let's go driving uh how's the driving in orlando by the way it's actually horrible and

00:23:15 - 00:23:36 | Speaker 1:

there's a scene in this movie where they're trying to like jump all over the interstate and they're like oh there's the exit and they have to like jump over and it's giving me just ptsd because i4 i think is the deadliest roadway in the entire country and it was just reminding me like this is just how normal tourists drive on i4 like i i've been this every day that i have

00:23:36 - 00:24:03 | Speaker 2:

to go on the freeway okay i will actually say the town i live in the drivers around here not too bad but we do have real tiny roads and i do sometimes think how do we not all crash our cars you know like twice a week on these tiny roads you know around the corner um but and i am like i can't consciously do all of this there's a lot of something else going on you know for me to not

00:24:03 - 00:24:54 | Speaker 1:

constantly crash my car well you know what it what it is too is that once you're in your car and you've gotten familiar with it and it's not like a new car you're borrowing someone else's i have a new car you actually gotta serve okay so so when you first get the car you're still kind of learning how far do i have when i'm reversing or how close can i get to the drive through or the wall on the left or the right because it's like spatially it's different whatever car that you used to have but once you lock in and you know exactly where the bounds are that kind of becomes like an exoskeleton to almost the point where like you can feel if something's getting close to you on the right even though like i don't know maybe this is me but like if a car starts getting real close on the right hand side like i almost feel it in like my right side of my arm like i get goose pimples what i'm getting at that's what i'm getting at

00:24:54 - 00:24:59 | Speaker 2:

you know i mean i'm not calling it magic but just you know how does nature work because that's can

00:25:00 - 00:25:03 | Speaker 3:

can you translate to monkeys you know that's what i guess what i'm getting at

00:25:03 - 00:25:15 | Speaker 2:

well and that's what's happening to i guess they're they're elves is that probably the right thing or is do they actually say exactly what this they don't i think i wrote some confusing

00:25:15 - 00:25:26 | Speaker 3:

notes for myself i can check what i wrote but then we got centaurs the police officer who's who's banging mom by the way is a centaur yeah but he doesn't look anything like them right so

00:25:26 - 00:25:32 | Speaker 2:

that would be compatible i mean i guess or they haven't written that particular law yet because

00:25:32 - 00:25:41 | Speaker 3:

they haven't figured it out yeah because i wrote oh the wonderful world of blue so like smurfs well some of them aren't blue some of them are actually like you know like white people color

00:25:41 - 00:25:54 | Speaker 2:

you know you know what's funny too is is that they're missing their dad and they only bring back dad as a single pair of legs but stepdad's got two pairs of legs oh okay that's fun to think

00:25:54 - 00:26:13 | Speaker 3:

about sorry you just said the concept of the movie again and again i'm like that's so pointless i mean i guess if you are in that situation you have i mean you would be like oh god this would make the worst movie if you had just tried to resurrect your your dead relative and it only got in the legs you'd be this is the dumbest situation possible you know kind of but hear me

00:26:13 - 00:26:32 | Speaker 2:

out though because the first thing i thought of was weekend at bernie's oh hell yeah the legs as weekend at bernie's all of a sudden to make they even have to make it like dance and open up a magical portal yeah so we can at bernie's 2 is where he gets brought back to life by magic now

00:26:32 - 00:26:40 | Speaker 3:

we're voodoo as i'll say let's make sure it's voodoo so i mean so if you think about it that

00:26:40 - 00:27:25 | Speaker 2:

way unless you hate weekend at bernie's 2 which i don't think you do i think nobody hates bernie's too so as you're watching onward you can maybe channel that a little bit like i don't hate the the pair of legs what i hate really the part that really bugs me the most is how it just keeps going from dilemma to dilemma to dilemma but none of it feels like they're solving this greater problem it's just they're getting from point a to point b and they have to keep running into these little trivial issues that stop them every three to five minutes and then they overcome it and they go to the next one overcome and go to the next one like i understand the formula but again it's not building up to anything bigger and they're not like finding inter leaking like interlocking puzzle pieces they kind of know like they've got the map they're making their way from point a to

00:27:25 - 00:27:57 | Speaker 3:

point b well i should have watched weekend of bernie's after i turned this off after 20 minutes a few years ago 20 minutes in 2020 yeah um because it's like around the same time i i have now seen the full movie because i had to do a podcast on it but uh joker the joaquin phoenix one originally and when it came out i also watched the first 20 minutes and then just put on king of comedy and taxi driver again instead you know because those are better movies with robert de niro you don't even lose the de niro of it all and they don't have musicals that start in the

00:27:57 - 00:28:02 | Speaker 2:

middle of them well that's the second one but that's the one that i haven't seen that's one

00:28:02 - 00:28:11 | Speaker 3:

i haven't seen but yeah it's a jukebox you say jukebox music when i'm usually out and uh watching strange magic a few months ago has only made me you know strengthen my resolve about that

00:28:11 - 00:28:37 | Speaker 2:

honestly this one everything was serviceable like the visuals were serviceable no the craft yeah i was actually i was part of the frustration too is seeing how good the visuals were versus what we end up getting because they've got all the components there all of the characters and the the world that they live in would make for such a great movie but it's it's weird that we

00:28:37 - 00:29:13 | Speaker 3:

don't get one out of this i mean uh sorry for listeners who have complained but here i'm reading off a wiki again the film was inspired by the death of scanlan's father the director dan scanlan when he was just a year old and his older brother only three in their relationship with each other scanlan was encouraged to develop personal stories so i i keep at least he took the memo i guess and then we have this movie but i'm like i don't i guess i just don't care i feel sorry he didn't know his dad blah blah but i don't care about this personal story of his that he's uh putting bizarro elf you know trappings on top of to make more interesting if they had

00:29:13 - 00:29:31 | Speaker 2:

just leaned way harder into the odyssey and into the ai aspect i think that there there was something here i mean it's yeah it's it's seeing all of the great it would be like someone had all the great music equipment behind them and they didn't have any like awesome music to show for it oh brother

00:29:31 - 00:29:35 | Speaker 3:

we're out there there's another movie from around the time ai came out that went way harder into

00:29:35 - 00:29:59 | Speaker 1:

00:30:08 - 00:30:23 | Speaker 3:

can you tell me a story? Sure. Once upon a time, a mom needed a new car. Was she brave? She was tired. Mostly. But she went to Carvana.com and found a great car at a great price. No secret treasure map required. Did she have to find a dragon? Nope. She bought it 100% online. From her bed, actually.

00:30:24 - 00:30:25 | Speaker 1:

Was it scary? Honey,

00:30:25 - 00:30:27 | Speaker 3:

it was as unscary as car buying could be.

00:30:27 - 00:30:29 | Speaker 1:

Did the car have a sunroof? It did.

00:30:30 - 00:30:35 | Speaker 3:

actually okay good story car buying you'll want to tell stories about buy your car today on

00:30:35 - 00:30:46 | Speaker 2:

delivery fees may apply you know bringing that movie up that is one of the musicals that i legitimately like it doesn't feel like a musical at any point yeah i haven't seen that movie for

00:30:46 - 00:31:01 | Speaker 1:

like 20 years because i saw it too many times when it came out to the odyssey yeah yeah a few of those actually i can't watch the big lebowski anymore either so another cohen's there and not because it's bad because i've seen it too much i can just lay it in my head i like the that now

00:31:01 - 00:31:07 | Speaker 2:

we've got connections between onward odyssey ai the shining like i wasn't expecting any of this

00:31:07 - 00:31:16 | Speaker 1:

so no and is this the dawn of ai slop you know again no verification on that folks but it does

00:31:16 - 00:31:34 | Speaker 2:

have that scent so random notes that i've just got here dad starts to dance and again weekend to bernie's too it makes sense because they play the la bamba or whatever it is and all of a sudden he's like dancing from the voodoo so again the the pants dance dance and pants i can't relate with

00:31:34 - 00:31:47 | Speaker 1:

that either my wife actually keeps a video of her on her phone of me dancing extremely badly you can relate to it uh the mom if i get too serious she'll show it to me the mom robs a pawn

00:31:47 - 00:32:07 | Speaker 2:

shop which is like a weird scene like they actually commit a crime even though she's going out with like this cop that this is the most corrupt family ever they are breaking the law and they're going to get away with it because the mom's banging you know like one of the police chiefs or whatever i also had to know why is the dad moving around constantly he knows he's just

00:32:07 - 00:32:25 | Speaker 1:

a pair of legs right or does he does he know does he even know what's going on or where he is the way the tap on the foot right but i mean if you have just been resurrected and have no eyes or ears you're kind of i don't know that seems like it would be confusing well okay so if we're

00:32:25 - 00:33:03 | Speaker 2:

staying within the disney laws of magic that we've understood so far in roger rabbit he kind of proves that shaving a haircut to bits which is that the tap sequence right it's that that that that and then the dad taps twice back and that's how they communicate but roger rabbit defined that that the only reason that you do that is to to complete a comedy bit so it doesn't really indicate that the dad has anything going on he's just playing along the rules of cartoons and of magic within the disney universe so like is the dad ever sentient i guess there's also the idea i mean

00:33:03 - 00:33:21 | Speaker 1:

you'll hear people say possessions or whatever or maybe you're like spirits that have no um no they can't feel so they use you to feel right so you go out and get a few prostitutes and do some coke right so maybe the leg feeling is is enough to be a very special thing for someone who's been

00:33:21 - 00:34:05 | Speaker 2:

dead for 15 years my other notes were and these were where i started realizing magic has no logic or rhyme or reason the guy that can do magic knows the most about it the guy that can do magic doesn't understand any of it so that that was the basic premise on every single situation they run into so you basically have ian the younger brother encounter an issue and then he's waiting for barley to tell him okay here's what you say here's the spell here's what you do but ian's technically the smarter of the two as well i guess i don't know is is barley an idiot because they kind of visually make him the big dumb idiot although he knows all this dnd stuff well actually you're

00:34:05 - 00:34:32 | Speaker 1:

making me think about music because i started playing guitar in like 1994 and by the late 90s i i was playing at a you know advanced level right i didn't actually start learning about gear till like 10 years ago so for years i could play the guitar but i really i didn't i think i was one of those guys that just left all the tone knobs up because i didn't even know what they did you know now i play with my tone knobs a lot that sounds dirty um okay so the dynamic there

00:34:32 - 00:34:44 | Speaker 2:

is that maybe three quarters of the way through the movie when ian realizes he's probably not going to meet his dad right like you kind of get this idea it gets foreshadowed the ticking clock

00:34:44 - 00:34:59 | Speaker 1:

it means even if they succeed it's still slightly pointless which is maybe why you were so disappointed by the end of the movie because at that point it's like was this isn't i mean i get the sentimentality but it just isn't worth it you know so okay so the only

00:35:00 - 00:36:04 | Speaker 5:

payoff is that barley's recounting that he's only he's only got three memories of dad and that's like these three great memories but then towards the very end of the movie he's like yeah i've only got four memories of dad and ian's like wait a minute i thought you had three what like what's this fourth one and then barley mentions well the fourth one was when he had to go and see dad in the hospital and he's got tubes like he's kind of describing someone dying of like leukemia or something like it's kind of a horrible they don't tell you exactly how he died i don't think but he's in the hospital full tubes and so what happens at the end is that since the older brother is the only one that gets to hug their dad for i don't know five seconds before he disintegrates but it's replacing the last memory he has of his dad with a much nicer one right because now he like now his last memory is hugging the dad but again it was only a five second hug and the main character doesn't get to participate in it which is the biggest letdown of what they're trying to like build you up to like is there an onward to coming i hope i hope not but i also i hope so but

00:36:04 - 00:36:12 | Speaker 4:

also i hope not most yeah also and mom doesn't meet her husband again yeah no one really gets

00:36:12 - 00:36:20 | Speaker 5:

any satisfaction except for the older brother it gets a four and a half second hug um oh another

00:36:20 - 00:36:32 | Speaker 4:

good joke though they mentioned the gelatinous cube early in the movie and then it does show up you know right when you've forgotten about it so it's considered like improv comics always say like you always reintroduce it right when after everyone forgot about it so i thought they did a

00:36:32 - 00:36:43 | Speaker 5:

good job with uh the gelatinous cube for all of the the actual dnd adjacent nerds out there that would have been like oh it's a gelatinous cube oh i don't even know that i just i was like oh he

00:36:43 - 00:36:48 | Speaker 4:

did mention the gelatinous cube like 45 minutes ago i don't even know the dnd connection i never

00:36:48 - 00:36:54 | Speaker 5:

played dnd but you must have played dragon warrior at some point with it where they got the slime

00:36:54 - 00:37:07 | Speaker 4:

i feel like the slot sorry it's dragon quest in japan and yes i've played lots of dragon quest okay okay so all the ones that were on the ds i played okay okay and and then here like what i

00:37:07 - 00:38:00 | Speaker 5:

was talking about before where they just like magic just happens and no one quite understands how it works which i guess thematically it makes sense because the entire world has forgotten how magic works so i guess you know you wouldn't just understand it inherently all of a sudden but then there's a curse and at the very end like the mom's talking about this curse that if they go and they try and get this last piece of the the phoenix crystal that if they remove it from wherever it's at it unleashes a curse well that happens they grab it the older brother grabs it and then like this red smoke starts piling out and the red smoke turns into like this constructed like concrete curse dragon right but they even ask the mom like what about this curse and she she says i can't explain it we just have to get to the boys fast and if that doesn't summarize the dynamic of everything that had like every beat in the story is we don't have time to explain it

00:38:00 - 00:38:28 | Speaker 4:

we have to get to this next thing now here's an interesting thing where they did try to use the the old magic to create the magic it says that they actually animated all of the map they went back to aladdin and fantasia and tried to 2d hand draw animated in that style and then after that change it to i guess you know make it the computer version so i guess they were trying to do it it just didn't work and it smells like early ai uh not the movie but the chat dpt version

00:38:28 - 00:38:34 | Speaker 5:

honestly the the again the visuals man like i'm on board i'm on board with everything the dragon

00:38:34 - 00:38:43 | Speaker 4:

fantastic loved it you know yeah uh i'm always i'm always up for a kaiju hello it is ryan and i

enrollment required terms apply and do you think that there's any significant difference between how much they care about story when it comes to a disney movie versus a pixar movie at this point

00:39:53 - 00:39:59 | Speaker 4:

is this pixar's hubris because up to about 2020 the general pop

00:40:00 - 00:40:47 | Speaker 1:

culture vibe was pixar knows how to break a story you know like they're the best you know and this one doesn't succeed even get into that what are the stats on this one oh i think it no no this came out like right like the weekend before the pandemic so yeah it lost money 200 budget 141 but that it gets february 21st 2020 released oh march 6th in the united states so it's like this is one of those movies that you can't actually talk about if it's successful or not because it's impossible to tell because no one was allowed to go to the movie theaters or what the first week they were and then they weren't so it so it made some money i'm like oh if i made that in the first week it did quite well and then just no one could see it

00:40:47 - 00:40:57 | Speaker 2:

right so you're telling me that the curse in onward was actually covet 19 correct yes

00:40:57 - 00:41:11 | Speaker 1:

i'll go with that released in australia and new zealand april 24th 2020 in south korea on june 17th 2020 this movie was kind of like yeah it kind of cursed itself i guess and you know what

00:41:11 - 00:41:52 | Speaker 2:

so this is definitely conspiracy theory but just coincidentally the same time that this global pandemic starts to happen everyone is the most isolated collectively we've ever been in our entire lives like the like objectively the most isolated by law and by practicality that's when ai and these like isolated companions also come out so like the theme here of onward being created by ai but before ai was accessible to everybody else if we went through the questions right did disney have access to ai before the general consumer populace of the world probably i mean

00:41:52 - 00:41:57 | Speaker 1:

That's not a conspiracy. That's just like, yes, of course they would. Why wouldn't they, you know?

00:41:58 - 00:42:27 | Speaker 2:

No, the conspiracy is if this movie actually utilized AI to a degree, it would explain so much, but it almost sounds like I'm trying to use it in a pejorative. I don't. I'm not even trying to use it as a criticism. Like, oh, I bet they used AI. i don't even think that that would necessarily be bad if it came together but all of the problems that i had with this are immediately explained by and chat gbt version 1.0 you know kind of came up

00:42:27 - 00:42:57 | Speaker 1:

with the story beats and yeah and i mean obviously we're saying ai made as in people would be shepherding it and um it does like now when you do that kind of thing it kind of like i said there's a certain texture here like i'm sure people are making decisions and things but it does like you know it has that smell like it's like uh when the first like commercial ai came out it was all those like uh it'd be like fake commercials that all ended with the world exploding right like it starts with pizza and then the world explodes i feel like i got a good intro it will be something

00:42:57 - 00:43:11 | Speaker 2:

like was disney's onward the first ai slop like that's kind of the premise here right i scratched my head while you did that oh well that's fine we'll animate it we'll have like a

00:43:11 - 00:43:22 | Speaker 1:

little ai animation yes there we go 2d first and then we'll and then we'll you know is that code they said they did the 2d animation and converted it is that how the conversion happened maybe you

00:43:22 - 00:43:46 | Speaker 2:

know so just to be clear visually speaking i do not think that ai had anything to do with it it definitely looks too handcraft i mean maybe maybe a disney had the technology to bang it out but i really think that with the professionals that they've got there and all the resources they would have just done it the old-fashioned way like i don't know how okay here's one visual element

00:43:46 - 00:43:58 | Speaker 1:

and i was not sitting there thinking i'm watching ai slop when i watched this last night but the mushroom houses really felt like ai slop to me if nothing else i don't know i don't know if

00:43:58 - 00:44:04 | Speaker 2:

i'm on the page that story wise even architecture wise i think i'm on board with this being ai slop

00:44:04 - 00:44:08 | Speaker 1:

we're having a full thought experiment so you know we don't know any of this i yeah

00:44:08 - 00:45:00 | Speaker 2:

okay here's another one right is this just because they're so magical they have less physical capability because at the very end of this so they i guess another it's not really a spoiler alert but they go on this big journey this big quest and at the very end of the quest it just brings them back to the exact place they started which is right outside their high school right like they leave from the front of the high school in the van and they drive all fun i like that i well thematically it's it's fun but it just again it's edging you and there's no real release you're just back where you stay you're literally back where you started on this but the scene right before they come up under the sewer plate back into the street where they started at there's this kind of button at the bottom of a well and it's filling up with water and it's going to crush them. This is right after the gelatinous cube thing. And

00:45:00 - 00:45:45 | Speaker 1:

All they have to do is stand on this little stone button at the bottom of this well, and it keeps the top of it open. And the big brother goes down. He can't do it. The little brother goes down like no one can seem to stand on it long enough. They can't hold their breath for more than five seconds. I think that even a person that hasn't trained themselves could probably get to a minute or two minutes if it were a life endangering situation. But these guys literally try for about five seconds and give up and like, we just can't do we just can't do this. There's there's no way out of this until they use the weekend at Bernie's legs to stand on a little pedestal, which does feel like a D&D style solution to something. But did they all just roll D ones on, you know, lung capacity?

00:45:45 - 00:45:57 | Speaker 2:

You ever play the breath holding game with movies? when I was younger I specifically remember doing it in Star Trek 4 and The Abyss where it's like can I hold my breath as long as they're holding their breath in this movie

00:45:57 - 00:46:04 | Speaker 1:

I didn't do it with movies I did it with underwater levels like Earthworm Jim and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

00:46:04 - 00:46:06 | Speaker 2:

and you're playing the game or watching the game

00:46:06 - 00:46:07 | Speaker 1:

passing out most of the time

00:46:07 - 00:46:14 | Speaker 2:

okay that sounds yeah I'll say that sounds stressful I could I could match Captain Kirk a few times in Star Trek 4

00:46:14 - 00:46:18 | Speaker 1:

that wasn't real though he didn't actually have to hold his breath

00:46:18 - 00:46:27 | Speaker 2:

for all that long i probably did a little bit i mean you hear the abyss i mean people talk about that movie it was like oh my god that movie was like sight you know it's like torture to make it

00:46:27 - 00:46:48 | Speaker 1:

it was like black ops site making that movie if you're listening to this right now and you're wondering how can i increase my lung capacity here's a great uh plug you should go and check out cartoon cabal where we reviewed plague dogs and plague dogs is really a movie that teaches you how to increase your lung capacity at the very end of it so i would i would suggest watching

00:46:48 - 00:46:52 | Speaker 2:

plague dogs if you want to know you'll have to spend some time at a secret government site and

00:46:52 - 00:46:57 | Speaker 1:

it will not be enjoyable you can you can do the same thing they do at home safely

00:46:57 - 00:47:30 | Speaker 2:

torture yourself well i guess there's we that's that's sports right i mean we both watched onward for an hour and a half so yeah yeah yeah uh i mean i am sitting here thinking i mean i've seen much worse movies in this recently um what i have to watch um i'm just thinking ones where i because i watched steel and i actually liked it so that's that wouldn't be an example you know so here's another movie have you seen uncut gems that's i know i should and i still haven't okay have you

00:47:30 - 00:48:52 | Speaker 1:

seen holy motors i do the uncut gems i've heard people talk about a lot okay so uncut gems is just a nonstop frantic energy and makes you anxious you don't really get a chance to lean back and like okay intermission right or like oh here's the funny part where you get to like lean back and laugh i mean obviously not the entire movie but that's the the entire movie kind of has this energy where like it's always moving on to this next thing and something's going wrong and but but you go into that knowing it's going to be this high energy if you go into the latest pixar movie and you brought your family out there i'm not expecting that same frantic anxious frustrated like edging energy that has no payoff at the end like i just imagine that there if you measured this i know this metric isn't being captured yet but how many families and minivans driving back from this movie got into arguments versus families that saw a different pixar movie toy story you know three how many arguments did the toy story three minivans get into versus the onward i feel that like the onward families they get into more arguments because it's raised like the frustration level up and nothing was resolved so now like you have to go and enact that out in the world you have to find some sort of completion okay i guess we have to plug cartoon cabal again

00:48:52 - 00:49:32 | Speaker 2:

and people should go to total validation where we discuss the the toy story three problem i was thinking uh when we all already mentioned a pandemic a little bit so did you see this is a tangent but last year's eddington did you have a view of that eddington i don't think so it's a small new mexico town it takes place right as the pandemic is starting to kick into gear so it's got like the the kind of out of it old guy that just wants to go to the supermarket and the sheriff trying to keep the peace with everyone uh more joaquin phoenix we already mentioned him as well so uh actually i would be very curious about your take on eddington i think i might have seen it and

00:49:32 - 00:49:40 | Speaker 1:

And I, oh yeah, it took, it was also, it was COVID-19 and it was George Floyd. Both of those were. Yeah, that's in there too.

00:49:40 - 00:49:49 | Speaker 2:

That's in the mix as well. So I feel like that's one of those movies where it's pretty good, but then no battle, one battle after another kind of just erased most of the memories of Eddington.

00:49:49 - 00:49:59 | Speaker 1:

Not correct. Yeah. A lot of the memories are erased, but also on top of that, it's, it's weird to see a movie about something that you're currently going through.

00:50:00 - 00:50:22 | Speaker 3:

Because it immediately has this weird shelf life where maybe it'll be interesting in 10 years or 20 years from now because it was released taking place during the thing that it's talking about. So they didn't really have to do any kind of historical research. They didn't have to have any kind of like special onset people to make sure it matched a certain time period. Like there was just them going through the actual real world at the time.

00:50:23 - 00:50:37 | Speaker 4:

That might have been the hat trick of a one battle after another where it's not really clear when this movie is taking place. and same with onward right it's not i mean it's like the light bulb gets invented in the middle ages in this timeline it seems that's at the beginning of the movie right well i don't know

00:50:37 - 00:50:53 | Speaker 3:

because i think it inherently has a middle ages look and feel to it because of the dungeons and dragons influence so even if it were 2020 it would still kind of have a middle ages look right because there's elves and fairies and swords and dragons and stuff yeah because they kind of they kind of

00:50:53 - 00:50:59 | Speaker 4:

suggest that the light bulb is magic but that specific magic which is technology just slowly

00:50:59 - 00:51:37 | Speaker 3:

takes over when we forget about the other magics well let me put forth the the light bulb technically could have happened at any time but i'm gonna guess 19th century but in this movie they have smart watches and cell phones and things that would require transistors and everybody knows we didn't get the transistor until the roswell crash in 1950s so technically this movie would have to have taken place sometime after the 1950s unless they had their own Roswell crash in a different year you didn't hear me counterpoint that so mate is Onward also about UFO disclosure

00:51:37 - 00:51:59 | Speaker 4:

you can use that if you want to scratch my head actually the first one was better I'm just having a squiz for having a look you know that term a squiz is this like a look at something it's like i'm having a quick look at something i'm having a squid i don't know it just it's been in my vocabulary for 20 years but it's australian

00:51:59 - 00:52:06 | Speaker 3:

slang so uh also okay i was gonna go with uh scientology but australian makes as much sense

00:52:06 - 00:52:19 | Speaker 4:

yeah australian slang uh monstrous poison don't drink that yeah i honestly i i've i've said most of my notes here but i have imagined that you might have a few magical uh rabbit holes we

00:52:19 - 00:53:29 | Speaker 3:

haven't jumped into yet well a few notes at the very end is that the manicure takes down the dragon which thematically again does not make sense because the manicure is supposed to be a man eater it's what the the word translates to as a man eater so it's weird that she's the one that's supposed to know although technically it's the mom but then the mom of ian and barley she basically has never been trained in anything probably doesn't really exercise doesn't have any of the muscle memory and she just like snaps into gear and takes the sword and essentially like defeats this giant magic curse dragon right so the first thing i'm thinking of was like either that dragon really sucks or mom is really the most magical badass out of all these two but of course your mom's magical but she's not a freaking manicore man she's just uh she's just like an older you know 40s elf like she's not necessarily what the manicore is supposed to be the manicore's got the wings and can breathe fire and has the sword and everything that's right that song sounds stuck in my head i couldn't not hear man eater every time that i

00:53:29 - 00:53:41 | Speaker 4:

um a voice of mom by the way is elaine from seinfeld so that's kind of fun okay that makes sense now it does make sense step into the world of power loyalty and luck

00:54:38 - 00:54:53 | Speaker 3:

So I'm curious because part of the early portion of this movie, like all the D&D stuff, they kind of gloss over the coolest part of D&D, which was the Satanic Panic version of it, right? Like imagine Stranger Things without Satanic Panic.

00:54:53 - 00:54:59 | Speaker 4:

I was about to say, Stranger Things were weaponized. That might be the reason it's not done so much here. Stranger Things had already had a season or two in this.

00:55:00 - 00:55:04 | Speaker 1:

course this movie didn't take a long time to make so i don't know but but you know what would have

00:55:04 - 00:55:53 | Speaker 2:

made this movie it's just slightly more interesting what's that satan i mean yeah i mean why use many word when few words work or however that quote goes right but i mean imagine the the more interesting dynamic that these characters that are literally magic and fairies that are literally magic but that magic is banned or magic is seen as like a bad thing i guess it's it's kind of zootopia in that case right like zootopia is that your animal nature has been banned you're not allowed to do your animal nature well here's another version but in this case everyone just kind of forgot or got lazy so i guess maybe there's almost like a wally aspect to it right like this is a magical version of wally where everybody just sits in uh chairs all the time

00:55:53 - 00:56:06 | Speaker 1:

and eats each other turned into paste what's it i mean this does have the functioning society like mom can still walk right wally they're they they're all gelatinous cubes and wow yeah but

00:56:06 - 00:56:22 | Speaker 2:

every character that could fly doesn't fly which i would say it's it's analogous to things that can walk not walking is the same as things that can fly not flying okay yeah that's why i'm kind

00:56:22 - 00:56:31 | Speaker 1:

of suggesting i can't fit this into that pixar timeline so well which you don't need to do there doesn't need to be a pixar timeline i just like thinking about it it's fun well and i mean you

00:56:31 - 00:57:00 | Speaker 2:

can have different portals and dimensions so you don't have to be linear in a true pixar timeline it wouldn't it wouldn't make sense to be purely linear yeah boo can send you straight into the eighth dimension if you let her this one was also missing the actual dynamics of dnd like i almost wish that there was some sort of d20 thing going on or or some other level to it as opposed to just kind of using as like a framework unless i missed some of it the movie uh it came out a year or two

00:57:00 - 00:57:15 | Speaker 1:

after it's a great movie is that uh dungeons and dragons honor among thieves where like they do kind of like it does kind of feel like the way people are talking that movie it does seem like they're actually at a table kind of right but and then the dialogue just coming through in the movie

00:57:15 - 00:58:06 | Speaker 2:

so well like labyrinth does this too in labyrinth jennifer connelly's not rolling d20s but she's kind of like shouting out answers to riddles and hoping that she gets it right and you kind of get this idea that like she's working through these different like little um barriers and little dilemmas but in this movie again it just feels like they show up to a thing and they're right about to die and then someone rolls a natural d20 and then problem solved and they go on to the next one it's the exact same pattern repeating over and over like like for example there's i don't think there's any there's an instance in this movie where they run into a problem they can't solve and they have to go back and regroup and attempt to solve it again right like every time they run into a problem they kind of solve that problem within five minutes of it showing up and

00:58:06 - 00:58:38 | Speaker 1:

they run into another one um i mean maybe this is another reason this movie didn't connect with me i have a co-worker who's she's in a role playing and stuff and for a while uh i was at one school and she was at a different school and i just use her stuff like pins and stuff right uh while i was there and uh she just had like there was a d10 a d20 a d16 in there i always just grabbed the six-sided dice to play games with kids i'm not i'm not screwing with any of those them fancy dice well there are different ratios right yeah i mean my dice i have a new dice where is it

00:58:38 - 00:58:46 | Speaker 2:

so the the six-sided die is just such a limited uh world of living this is my foam dice because

00:58:46 - 00:59:05 | Speaker 1:

if students throw it at my head no matter how hard they try to do it it won't hurt it almost sounds like a challenge for anyone watching that i think in your students have taken as a challenge to be honest honestly this one's a little smaller than the old ones it might be a little more dense i don't know they got smaller is that the institution of a society

00:59:05 - 00:59:59 | Speaker 2:

my dice got smaller do they even have fuzzy dice anymore i don't know huh i was never a fuzzy dice guy i'm a foam dice guy well so the only real dnd you get in this movie is the very beginning where the brother's playing on a table and then once you kind of leave the only real dnd is the fact that he knows all these weird magical spells but i also get the feeling that halfway into this movie ian the younger brother he just starts making up spells on his own like saying things that his brother didn't necessarily teach him unless it was between scenes but i guess that's the most magical part because because i think that maybe that's a wiccan or i'm not sure exactly which denomination but that part of being magic or coming up with a magic word is that you just create one that's meaningful to you and it doesn't have to come out of a book and it doesn't have to be in Latin as

01:00:00 - 01:00:04 | Speaker 1:

necessarily although i think most of the things they say here are very harry potter latin-esque

01:00:04 - 01:00:29 | Speaker 2:

right yeah i was about to say like in harry potter it kind of have harry just like pulling a few spells out of his butt at some point i think like uh like when he makes the the dream unicorn or whatever speaking of which as a not gamer thing the the biggest signifier for this movie is that the older brother you know has a shagging wagon with the unicorn on the side that that's that's my visual take for that character you know but also the the unicorn represents probably didn't

01:00:29 - 01:01:03 | Speaker 1:

shagging the wagon either well the unicorn would be a weird thing too because the unicorn in this universe as you see in the very like first no it's they're like rabid cats uh because in the very beginning there's two unicorns that are fighting over a knocked over garbage can and like one of them hisses at the other one and it sort of rears and like runs away so they're basically feral cat like trash cats so that would be like riding around with a van with a trash cat on the side so it's more like it's like the the van from uh kill bill then hey it's ryan

01:01:17 - 01:01:25 | Speaker 1:

conditions 21 plus yeah yeah exactly okay you could also could have said heathcliff i think Heathcliff also had a van.

01:01:27 - 01:01:35 | Speaker 2:

Those are the junkyard cats or like that's essentially unicorn other half of the show where they had that. Yeah.

01:01:36 - 01:02:09 | Speaker 1:

Just trying to, I really think that there's other really interesting things happening in this universe. So like the, the onward universe that they created has all kinds of potential in it, but the particular story that they followed was just a little bit, not enough of weekend at bernie's and not enough of the odyssey and not enough of ai but like little bits and pieces of all that but man if they had gone all the way shining or all the way any kind of kubrickian movie this thing could have been phenomenal it's like the movie solo a star

01:02:09 - 01:02:27 | Speaker 2:

wars story it's like i know you don't like star wars that much but it's like well i like this universe but this movie's boring so that that might be the ultimate sin of onward like you could you could make a great movie with this looking like this it just needs a better story

01:02:27 - 01:02:35 | Speaker 1:

or a more effective story did they just not have any actual magicians and dnd players

01:02:35 - 01:02:45 | Speaker 2:

in the writer's room for this maybe and it might have just been a like again the director said oh try and make a personal story and maybe he just went too far with that and that it just becomes

01:02:45 - 01:03:00 | Speaker 1:

uninteresting to most other people so he was tasked with writing a personal story and here's your top secret uh version of chat gpt version one and he was like all right i got this yeah yeah

01:03:00 - 01:03:15 | Speaker 2:

maybe i will you know i at so i as i said if it ain't this i think we've already seen the first chat gpt movie and we didn't know it i'm like very confident about that you know well i mean

01:03:15 - 01:03:31 | Speaker 1:

statistically if you get 12 writers in a room and some disney movies i'm sure is way more than that but even if you got 12 like subwriters in a room you're telling me that not one of those people on a late night had just a random idea and they were like chat gpt flesh this out for me i think

01:03:31 - 01:03:47 | Speaker 2:

doug lyman has been pretty out and open that he is now trying to make movies with uh ai well he made he made born i the first born movie he made go he made uh edge of tomorrow live die repeat whatever you want to call that movie i want to call it all you need is kill because that's the

01:03:47 - 01:04:14 | Speaker 1:

best name well i know disney is one of the earliest adopters that was training because they've got such a huge library of things that they already own and they can just train on their own material essentially so they've been doing this way ahead of the game of anyone else so it wouldn't it wouldn't be that crazy in fact i think that we might put this one on the map like if there's a pixar timeline for where all these movies come about this one starts wherever ai

01:04:14 - 01:04:25 | Speaker 2:

starts so like let's keep an eye like i said i have not seen any of the pixar movies that come after this so you know we'll have to see if this was a fluke or if it's a trend you know

01:04:25 - 01:04:41 | Speaker 1:

okay i wonder if we could feed the transcript of this movie to one of those like ai uh detectors that's like you know if teachers will put it through their students papers to see if they cheated and used ai i feel like we should run this script through one of those detectors just

01:04:41 - 01:04:46 | Speaker 2:

to see what it says yeah hell yeah okay um anything else you want to throw out on onward

01:04:46 - 01:05:29 | Speaker 1:

or do we move onward from this movie i mean i think that we've got more observations about this movie than maybe the creators did the kubrick connections the odyssey connection the ai connection is one of the strongest not just the Thank you.

01:05:00 - 01:05:18 | Speaker 2:

they might have used chat gbt but the ai movie from kubrick to spielberg which was also like taking a great world a great deep concept about alchemy and homunculus and all of this and then just sort of whitewashing it all almost as an intentional way to suppress real magic

01:05:18 - 01:05:29 | Speaker 1:

that's kind of the vibe that i get from onward and that's a that's one of the flaws and like it's devastating that mom just shows up for a day at the end of ai here it's like i guess that's dad

01:05:29 - 01:05:56 | Speaker 2:

you know yeah mom might be like oh we've only got the waist down i can make this work but you know who can't make that work are the two freaking brothers like that's it's kind of awkward for them but it wouldn't have been as awkward for mom like mom like the dad would have been like oh i know who this is i recognize my wife yeah again very weird that the mom who is this person's partner

01:05:56 - 01:06:01 | Speaker 1:

in the past you know lost never has any reaction even with the pants really you know

01:06:01 - 01:06:26 | Speaker 2:

well she she's there when they try and revive him with half-assed necromancy but she sees it not work and then she leaves and then they get it to halfway work and then they basically run away with the pants so she doesn't really understand or get to see or spend any time with the only person that would have actually been able to make use of the groin okay i guess we wind this one

01:06:26 - 01:06:33 | Speaker 1:

down today then uh what up with you i listen to your tinfoil oh yeah if you haven't listened to

01:06:33 - 01:07:23 | Speaker 2:

that one go and check out my episode on tinfoil hat where i talk about adrenochrome with sam tripoli for about an hour and a half i'm also going to be doing a debate with ftfe who typically debates flat earthers and just completely dismantles everything about it so i'm going to be steel manning my adrenochrome arguments which are that it is a real psychedelic that it was used in mk ultra and that it is a good stand-in for blood magic even if not proof of blood magic because i don't believe in supernatural and onward type magic stuff but i think that it is the closest thing that we have in a secular setting that represents all of the claims that magic usually gets leveraged against it so that sounds interesting going uh just i guess just search for like paranoid american adrenochrome online and i think i've got like a monopoly on a lot of

01:07:23 - 01:07:39 | Speaker 1:

that i mean hey me getting into meditation spirituality more uh good conspiracy stuff was because uh somewhere around 2016 i was like oh we got dmt in our head let's see if i can coax that out so there was a really dumb reason i got started on all this i just had a recent

01:07:39 - 01:08:14 | Speaker 2:

conversation with uh freighter rc and he was talking about how all of the earliest religions and secret mystery schools it was all dmt that even edward kelly's magic red powder was acacia root extract and that all the original freemasons were all using acacia root extract dmt and that like all of the old religions were using dmt and that was essentially what the big secret was that they were revealing at the end of it so i'm usually on board with all that that hey i didn't

01:08:14 - 01:08:23 | Speaker 1:

if you work on it it can work sometimes so not not advocating no i'm saying it's in there already

01:08:23 - 01:08:40 | Speaker 2:

maybe i think that they're still trying to figure out even rick strassman spirit molecule guy uh i don't know if they've actually pinpointed that it gets synthesized anywhere but i think it can be detected in the blood but they don't they don't know if it's being synthesized entirely by the

01:08:40 - 01:08:47 | Speaker 1:

body or some outside source or what anyway that that's yeah we could start another podcast on that

01:08:47 - 01:08:54 | Speaker 2:

as you have done yeah search for paranoid american dmt you'll probably get a whole bunch of articles

01:08:54 - 01:09:08 | Speaker 1:

about that too uh music pitch today i also make trippy music see if the older brother and onward had just been like an iron maiden guy that would have like brought me way more into the movie than happen. They were distant

01:09:08 - 01:09:10 | Speaker 2:

themselves from the satanic panic aspect, I think.

01:09:11 - 01:09:37 | Speaker 1:

Yeah, he would have had to be an Iron Maiden guy, though. It's not like he'd be like, I like the talking heads, right? I like Devo. I like Devo. Anyway, my music's at rovingsagemedia.bandcamp.com Sometimes it gets trippy. The recent ones get a little trippy. Trip out. Jangle. Jangle rock. In your shagging wagon. With a unicorn on the side. Which is really a trash cat.
