Disney's most forgettable film hides its most disturbing occult blueprint — and almost nobody noticed. In this episode of Occult Disney, we dig into the hidden esoteric architecture of Raya and the Last Dragon: a pandemic-coded allegory built on anatomical dragon symbolism, mindless plague imagery, and a suspicious 'trust your enemy' mass-programming message. From the five clans carved out of a dead dragon's body to a fictional profanity smuggled past censors, this pandemic-era Disney production is far stranger — and far more deliberate — than its forgettable surface suggests. Joined by a guest with real insider Disney brainstorm experience, we trace the occult fingerprints hiding in plain sight. **Tags:** Raya and the Last Dragon occult symbolism, Disney conspiracy, occult Disney hidden meaning, esoteric Disney analysis, Raya last dragon symbolism, Disney pandemic allegory, occult symbolism animation

hello welcome to the caught disney podcast where you fly through the air like dragons at least like one dragon it's right on the last dragon that means you get one dragon except for the very beginning of the movie in the end hi it's matt here it's a paranoid american over there

00:01:41 - 00:01:56 | Speaker 4:

what's your dragon temperature i got it well i'm gonna answer that actually but i want to know yours first so i've got two questions that i love to ask everybody i think i've asked these to you before when you were on my show at one point but a do you believe in dinosaurs

00:01:56 - 00:02:04 | Speaker 3:

the first image that went through my head was the it was the abc dinosaurs so i believe in those

00:02:04 - 00:02:14 | Speaker 4:

dinosaurs for sure okay okay so do you believe in dragons having ever existed um i think there's

00:02:14 - 00:02:40 | Speaker 3:

enough weird water creatures uh like like you go to temples and things and the this is a southeast east asian like mishmash of some kind of course i live in japan but you know there's guardians guarding the temples which are like bizarre like somebody told somebody else who told somebody else who told somebody else what a lion or a giraffe was and that's what we get so they're fantastical creatures but at one point someone was just describing a lion i imagine that's what happens

00:02:40 - 00:02:45 | Speaker 4:

with the with the dragon okay let me add a qualifier fire breathing flying dragons having

00:02:45 - 00:02:51 | Speaker 3:

ever existed at some point in history yeah in the hollow earth i said yeah okay kong is messing

00:02:51 - 00:02:58 | Speaker 4:

with him right okay so i mean this movie it's about dragons so i guess this is if dragons were

00:02:58 - 00:03:48 | Speaker 3:

real yeah we had the last unicorn now we have the last dragon uh ray and the last dragon is kind of like the um i think this is the most pandemic movie possible apparently it was animated by people at their homes voiced all the voice actors were doing it from home they didn't even know who the who they were like acting with until like you know disney released a press uh statement or whatever this is a disney work from home movie this is a disney work from home movie yes um it's another one where the directors and the writers and the cast changed like at least twice so uh yeah how did you feel about this because i woke up this morning feeling like i had not watch this movie and i went looked at my notes i went scrubbing through the movie again i was like oh yeah okay i remember this oh now i remember this it was like but yeah just it didn't leave

00:03:48 - 00:03:58 | Speaker 4:

much of an impact on me i guess i'm actually a little bit shocked at that just because if anyone was gonna really vibe with this one i was going to assume it would be you living in japan for 20

00:03:58 - 00:04:40 | Speaker 3:

years yeah well uh this is one this isn't like this this is part of disney i guess trying to gain like you know more cultural geography right you know like milan is like let's get the chinese market in here it's like let's get a general southeast asian market like is it leos is it vietnam is it malaysia sure is the answer to all of those i guess um it's not specific the name of uh what is the name of the land in this one again they they've made up something for it uh comandra comandra there we go yeah and there is i mean there is a line where just when i'm being given a lot of names i can't remember that's kind of an issue sometimes i mean i'm

00:04:40 - 00:04:54 | Speaker 4:

not putting i'm not putting you on the spot here to like get this right but i'm does malaysia have dragons does southeast asia in general have dragons or is this specific to like a few countries and Southeast Asia.

00:04:54 - 00:04:57 | Speaker 3:

I think there's plenty of dragons all around the Far East, yeah.

00:04:57 - 00:05:00 | Speaker 4:

I mean, technically, I guess you've got them in...

00:05:00 - 00:05:04 | Speaker 1:

europe too but it doesn't seem like they're as integrated with architecture and artwork and

00:05:04 - 00:05:35 | Speaker 2:

culture to the same extent yeah uh i saw a list somewhere where it was just like a big mishmash which i think is one of the issues here like it doesn't quite focus on anything enough like night markets okay that's that's a big taiwan i guess that's all of southeast asia but uh yeah it's it's there's no focus i guess is the the issue i have here and i had trouble focusing on it now was there any do i have any real criticisms not really things look cool i like the color purple even though it's evil in this movie but yeah

00:05:35 - 00:05:40 | Speaker 1:

i thought you're talking about the movie with oprah oh actually i don't like that movie that

00:05:40 - 00:05:46 | Speaker 2:

much um i mean it's fine it's just it's not that fun to watch uh yeah this one that's probably the

00:05:46 - 00:06:41 | Speaker 1:

first thing that stood out to me was that it had like a very specific color scheme i guess that was you know it I watched it and I don't know if I remember as much of it as they probably want you to and I think the other part too is that it was legitimately better than some many other Disney movies that we've seen but I guess it was just like serviceable like it wasn't so bad that it stood out in your mind in fact it's it's funny I can't remember the last movie that you mentioned it had jumped all over the place and passed through like 20 people's hands and i didn't even realize it and i thought like yeah it actually worked out pretty well i mean i thought this one worked out pretty well too it's actually a pretty decent movie it's got i think some of the most violent scenes that come directly from disney proper and not just because they're distributing something else or hiding it behind touchstone like this one's got legitimately people like

00:06:41 - 00:06:56 | Speaker 2:

being stabbed and assaulted non-stop well yeah she's a warrior isn't she so but i wonder if it is something just the hermetically sealed work environments of everybody in here somehow comes through in the movie and makes it like weirdly sterile like there's the collaboration isn't

00:06:56 - 00:07:17 | Speaker 1:

maybe quite coming through i refuse to acknowledge that even if it's true because i am a work uh work from home until you die uh advocate so i i can't even give like an inch of leeway where someone can clip me being like yeah maybe if they had all worked in the office together this would have came out better so i just i can't even go down that line no i make all my music by myself

00:07:17 - 00:07:44 | Speaker 2:

i'd like to hope it doesn't all suck you know i mean i get i get collaborators like i have drummers like halfway across the world and i get someone else to write my lyrics and that's the collaboration otherwise yeah i am sitting in my home so i do want to believe that you can i guess a movie is such a bigger endeavor though um like i mean making a movie kind of feels like somebody needs to be on set you know i mean obviously it's animated there's no set but it feels like there should be a coming together of people for a movie i don't know you you have more animation experience

00:07:44 - 00:09:41 | Speaker 1:

than i do well and with disney kind of like playing and honestly the way that disney uh used to do it when i was there at least is that everyone would just fly out for three days five days maybe a little bit longer and you would just be an intense uh eight to 12 hour brainstorm sessions nonstop and they and they basically take all the characters and all the story plot lines and just any kind of creative decision and just poke it full of holes and then inflate it and then poke it full of holes again and stuff like for example there was one exercise we did that was called no nuke or it was like a no nuke policy where anyone could come up with any idea and no one was allowed to criticize it no one was allowed to say anything wrong with it it was just a way to get everyone to like suggest their ideas and then you'd have other um meetings later that day or in the week where then you can like poke holes in that stuff but the the whole premise was that you want to get everyone together in one room or at least in a way that they can submit their ideas and then feel like even if it was a dumb idea that they're not going to limit because you because there was a very strong philosophy that someone's best idea is probably going to be maybe like the third or the fourth or the fifth thing they suggest or maybe even beyond that but usually like the fifth thing that you suggest is going to be better than the first two so and it was weird because then what happens is people know that that's how the meetings were supposed to work so then you would always offer up a sacrificial lamb as your first one or two suggestions just knowing that everyone like no one's allowed to criticize it anyway but you like offer these up and then later on in the week then you drop like your actual ideas so i don't know maybe like it's it was a weird game of like politics and creativity but also you ended up hearing so many crazy off-the-wall ideas in some of these sessions and some of them were legitimately good so maybe that's part of the magic that's

00:09:41 - 00:09:59 | Speaker 2:

missing when you do it like this yeah i mean this did start pre-pandemic uh started getting developed in late 2018 screenplay by adlai limb later replaced by keel murray directors paul brig and dean wellens later replaced by don hall and carlos lopez

00:10:00 - 00:10:14 | Speaker 5:

strada uh the animators generally were the ones that had done frozen's utopian moana so if we're drawing a line we draw it through those movies to here which that makes sense uh like most of the modern disneys we've been watching like everything here looks fantastic you know visually

00:10:14 - 00:11:04 | Speaker 3:

there's not an issue i've in fact i think that this is one of the better looking ones because usually up until this movie i guess within disney but you either had a pixar look or you would have like a dreamworks look or like there's very specific looks and i guess there's the ice age one which been um another variation of that but every one of these studios tend to like start really honing and refining a very specific look like toy store even it took them a couple movies to show humans but once they showed humans even the humans had a very specific look to them and this one i think that they did a slightly better job of not making it look pixar not make i mean because obviously it wasn't pixar but not making it look like a really specific 3d aesthetic that i've seen again after this yeah it is nice they're trying you know it's time to start

00:11:04 - 00:11:15 | Speaker 5:

finessing this and not make everything look like gloop uh how different do you we just did onward right so do you feel that there's a you got a little more of an animator eye than i do so

00:11:15 - 00:11:48 | Speaker 3:

man like onward i didn't like the movie but it was more memorable and the like animation wise i think i enjoyed it more this one highly technical like the fight scenes and all of like the intricate like actual animation steps did seem really more impressive i guess but onward even though they didn't utilize it enough they actually were making i think better use of kind of like over-the-top hyperbolic sort of animation yeah the thing with this movie is like

00:11:48 - 00:12:01 | Speaker 5:

why am i talking about 12 hours after watching it i'm stressed out like oh my god i didn't watch the movie and then i reviewed the movie right before we got on i was like i did watch the movie and it's already gone again it's just like will not stick in my brain it's missing so many of the

00:12:01 - 00:12:28 | Speaker 3:

trademark qualities that we're expecting to see from a disney movie right like first of all i know not every single one has the proxy this one like her her parents turned to stone but then she gets old enough that it doesn't really matter as much anymore so you've you're already losing that part of it and correct me if i'm wrong here maybe this is went into the memory hole but there's no music in this i mean not background music but i mean they don't break into song in this movie do they

00:12:28 - 00:12:36 | Speaker 5:

no no this is not a musical which that's actually a plus but maybe you'd need that anchor to you A whole new world to remember Aladdin, right?

00:12:37 - 00:13:06 | Speaker 3:

If we were to do a little on-paper checklist and all the things that I think we like in Disney movies and things we don't like, I don't know if I would check the Needs Musical box, but that's probably part of the reason why this one is a little bit harder to pull out of the memory hole. I'm almost putting this on the level of Finding Dory, but even Finding Dory, I think I have more specific memories of. It's not fair for you to compare that because you said you've seen it a million times, but I've only seen each of those once.

00:13:07 - 00:13:38 | Speaker 5:

Yeah, yeah. Well, actually, I've only seen Pyongor like two or three times, but for whatever reason, I do remember that one okay. Pixar, I guess, I would argue until recently, was always, they break the stories, so they don't need the songs because their stories are constructed well. That's arguable, of course, but Disney movies, either a story is very simple or a story is a little wonky, but yeah, Moana, not the best songs, but yeah, they were anchors in the movie, right? so and they certainly didn't like make me angry or anything i feel like if if we're doing

00:13:38 - 00:13:43 | Speaker 3:

comparisons i don't think this one even holds a candle to milana no that that's one of the things

00:13:43 - 00:14:03 | Speaker 5:

i mean i mean obviously we're in a slightly different part of the world that's polynesia now we're in southeast asia i do feel like we're watching like kind of a warmed over milana for a lot of this you know um we're replacing the rocks um not loki what's this what um maui we're replacing maui with a uh with aquafina as a dragon who turns into a lady as well I guess.

00:14:32 - 00:15:00 | Speaker 4:

When you're hurt and can't work, navigating workers' compensation or social security disability shouldn't feel like a second job. The rules are complicated, the system can be confusing, and the benefits you're entitled to aren't always easy to get. That's where I'd come in. I'm Brett Vygotsky, an attorney at Levin Papantonio, Proctor Buchanan, O'Brien Barr, and Muget, PA, here in Pensacola, Florida. My team and I are focused on one thing, making sure you receive every benefit the law allows. Call me.

00:15:00 - 00:15:05 | Speaker 1:

at 850-432-1111. That's the voice actor, Awkwafina.

00:15:06 - 00:15:15 | Speaker 2:

You want me to spell that for you? I'm actually pretty familiar with it. Okay. It's not the way that you spell the drink, but it's got like an F in there.

00:15:15 - 00:15:24 | Speaker 1:

A-W-K-W-A-F-I-N-A. That's fun. I remember her in the Marvel movie as well, the Rings one.

00:15:25 - 00:15:33 | Speaker 2:

Does that move the needle one way or the other with her being one of the main voices in this not really this is another actually i thought

00:15:33 - 00:15:45 | Speaker 1:

her voice acting is okay uh and then the also her and and rea were both replaced uh kelly marie tron here she is was was doing the rea voice so rose from the prequels uh

00:15:45 - 00:16:03 | Speaker 2:

i just know that aquafina is fairly polarizing and i think one of like the most noticeable part of aquafina is her voice like even out of everything else about her it's really the voice that stands out to people i'm not going to say like fran drescher level but it's sort of

00:16:03 - 00:16:14 | Speaker 1:

the same type of association because she's in crazy rich asians i haven't seen that um i uh i haven't heard her rap albums i guess she did a couple of that's how she started right

00:16:14 - 00:16:18 | Speaker 2:

that's why she's got the name jack horseman or something she did like some animated series as

00:16:18 - 00:16:31 | Speaker 1:

well with whales that's what we should probably cover something of at some point um weirdly produced by michael eisner like 10 years after leaving disney he just really needed to get this

00:16:31 - 00:16:35 | Speaker 2:

one out of the system i wonder if this is something that that he didn't get to bring

00:16:35 - 00:16:52 | Speaker 1:

up in one of the brainstorming meetings those are the bojack horseman thing maybe i don't know uh but yes back back here uh let's see i don't know should we uh i think i already said some production and stuff so should we start working through the plot of this one a bit i mean it's

00:16:52 - 00:18:35 | Speaker 2:

not really that that deep of a story maybe that's part of it uh so dragons exist dragons are real but then there's also something called the droon and the droon they describe it as a mindless plague and i almost want to know more about the droon i want i want the droon's backstory which seems infinitely more interesting than the people's of the dragon's backstory uh but anyways the the dragons fought it which i'm not exactly sure how they fought it and then ends up turning to stone so the premise i guess is that all of the masonry and all of the stone dragon carvings that you see in buildings are actual dragons and they were just kind of converted to stone and the exact same thing with all of the people that you see like a like a stone statue of somebody doing a kung fu pose i guess that all of those guys are also real people that were consumed by this mindless plague thing so everybody wants to get stoned everyone got stoned yeah this is back where when it was bad for you i guess it was a little bit stronger back then so after you get stoned in ancient southeast asia where wherever you can kind of throw a dart and just be like yeah that's kind of where this takes place uh all of the the daughter of one of the guys that gets changed a stone she wants to unchange her dad so he's back to normal dad and we follow her story of discovering these magical gems that she gives to a dragon that she finds played by Aquafina and then eventually once they get all of the gems happy ever after that's kind of the plot there's some fighting and stuff and there's some backstabbing but honestly that's the real premise of the entire story unless I'm missing some like much deeper thing

00:18:35 - 00:18:51 | Speaker 1:

that happened well yeah it's like you know lots of trust issues which honestly i don't need to be drowning in trust issues for a movie no daddy issues really daddy's a sane and then he you know he's got he's wearing that doom shirt at the beginning i might have put that on with my mind while i was watching it but

00:18:51 - 00:19:48 | Speaker 2:

you know what part of this too it might be a little bit like disney has shocked your palate so much it's like if you just ate candy all day long and then someone just gave you something that had just a normal amount of sugar in it it would almost taste bland right even if it was legitimately good food and good for you if your palate has been so thrown out of whack because you eat nothing but salt and sugar then you don't get to enjoy normal food so maybe this is like a good decent normal movie but disney has trained us to be traumatized and to see uh colorful things and to basically play out your mommy and daddy issues and that you want to be a princess and this one it feels a little bit more like a regular movie like maybe this should have just been distributed by disney and not like labeled with the disney moniker well if they made it they kind of have to do that don't they i don't know i mean stephen king had a pen name for uh like a decade or so right when he

00:19:48 - 00:19:58 | Speaker 1:

wanted to allegedly yeah well disney had that with a touchstone right it was like oh these movies are more but that was in that case is oh these movies are more adults right that was the separated to

00:19:58 - 00:19:59 | Speaker 2:

protect the brand to make it

00:20:00 - 00:20:09 | Speaker 1:

still family safe but disney could have come out with like a secret disney safe francis bacon william shakespeare sort of approach and then put it out through that angle i'm just planting seeds

00:20:09 - 00:20:25 | Speaker 2:

this is also just dangerous ground because the dragon is so spirited away feeling and i mean very few movies are going to survive a comparison to spirited away but it's like that's the filet mignon of a dragon movie and this is you know ryan's steakhouse or something you were asking

00:20:25 - 00:20:51 | Speaker 1:

before the name of this land that they all come from which is cumandra did you did you put together that cumandra itself is a dragon and then when all of these nations broke apart they all have these names like heart fang and right spine yeah yeah those are literally the anatomical parts of a dragon if you were to split it into five different parts so each clan gets a different

00:20:51 - 00:21:10 | Speaker 2:

anatomical region of the dragon itself no that appealed to my um to my map obsessed brain so that that was that you know that was like one of the things that stuck the most like i was like oh i remember the dragon map and this is where the places are because hey at work yesterday i had 10 minutes of nothing so i was you know staring at weird islands on google maps as one does

00:21:10 - 00:22:26 | Speaker 1:

so and and this is probably the most interesting part of all of my notes for the entire movie is how the story is based around these anatomical sections of the dragon. So the main character that we follow, she's in this clan called Heart. And Heart is basically like the center of the dragon, right? This is like the most important part contains the heart. And they're also the one that keep this last remaining sacred gem that anyone knows about. So, okay, subplot points. So in the very beginning of the movie, the dad is trying to explain to his daughter like we should trust everybody we're going to invite all the clans here we're going to have a nice big barbecue uh everyone's going to hang out like we all get along we're not going to fight with each other and she's telling her dad like no those are our enemies we shouldn't be inviting them here as our friends so they invite them over as friends and shocked face one of the enemies from fang basically steals the sacred gem from heart and that's kind of what kicks off the whole story is that now they she has to go and like chase down uh the rest of the gems in order to save her dad right yeah sorry i was just i was thinking about

00:22:26 - 00:22:42 | Speaker 2:

the whole like oh we can't talk to this people sort of thing what is that about humans where it's like we can't talk to these people nothing moves forward if you don't talk to the people right you mean the people between the clans i'm just talking in general like human nature of like oh i'm annoyed with these people so we can't talk you know but then there's probably people i don't

00:22:42 - 00:23:20 | Speaker 1:

want to talk to so yeah well i mean when you actually revert back to literal tribes then it's i i guess like the american version of a tribe because i'm not native american just like regular american right is the like hatfield and mccoy where where it's two different neighbors they get into a dispute over who knows what i think it was like a couple there was like a cousin died then they got revenge and then they got revenge and it went back and forth enough times to where you just you know hated the other team i guess um the montague and uh what's the juliet version

00:23:20 - 00:23:26 | Speaker 2:

what is what are the names montague and capulets there you go montague so montague and capulets

00:23:26 - 00:24:37 | Speaker 1:

i guess the exact same premise here where you've just always had a beef for so long you keep having a beef but in this movie it seems like it's justified right because heart is saying we shouldn't let anyone inside of heart right especially these fang guys and fang does exactly what they expect them to do they open up the oh my god is this movie about uh immigration where they they open up you know the the gates and they're like nah let's let fang immigrate into our country they'll respect our customs like we're being nice to them we're gonna give them support we're gonna give them food and then as soon as uh fang shows up they're kind of like wow you guys got rice must be nice like we don't we don't get rice i wish i could get rice back it's like yeah we'll have some right but they're not happy about getting it they're angry that that you've had it all along and and one of my notes too is like out of all of i guess the the choices they had a stew that had like meat and vegetables and all the stuff in it and then they had rice and fang was like oh wow rice but wouldn't rice be the cheapest and easiest out of those two dishes wouldn't you be like wow stew with fresh vegetables and protein like we don't

00:24:37 - 00:24:59 | Speaker 2:

get that anymore rice is very difficult to cultivate like you know as i as i walk around through a year like right now they just flooded all the rice fields and you have to get it at the right time and then you have to you got to be a rice picker you know come autumn it looks it's horrible that's why there's a lot of really old people are just like permanently hunched over because they've been rice farming for decades

00:25:00 - 00:25:11 | Speaker 4:

i didn't see anyone permanently hunched over in the heart clan so maybe there's even more backstory where they were like i guess you would have spine to it right yeah exactly maybe maybe harder a

00:25:11 - 00:25:14 | Speaker 3:

bunch of bourgeoisie pricks they need to be first against the wall when the revolution comes you

00:25:14 - 00:26:04 | Speaker 4:

know that's what fang thinks so hard everyone's jealous of heart because they've got water and rice and they've got like a sweet little like area of protection again i guess like the heart in a body is well protected so everyone else is sort of jealous of the fact that they've got this nice little isolated spot that they've been but all i guess only fang is really the problems that get invited they're the problem children so fang i guess represents the right attitude here though because that's kind of the uh the part that rips flesh and it shows aggression and being a predator right like if you have fangs then you're probably a carnivore slash predator so this makes sense that they would kind of play that entire stereotype out, I guess. Maybe it's not

00:26:04 - 00:26:11 | Speaker 3:

so much immigration as they're getting into free trade, right? You've got to connect all the parts of the body with free trade.

00:26:12 - 00:26:24 | Speaker 4:

I like my immigration analogy a little bit better, though, because they literally open the gates to the city and let all of these aggressors come in, and they're like, alright, guys, now behave yourselves, and guess what happens?

00:26:26 - 00:26:26 | Speaker 3:

Japan is like one of the more conservative of all of the countries on the planet when it comes to immigration, no?

00:27:36 - 00:28:36 | Speaker 3:

Oh, and it's cracking down now. Yeah, I mean, I have a proper visa. I can't get a – it's suddenly become harder to get a permanent one. Yeah, they've cranked up the price for getting them. So it is weird because Japan hasn't been having enough kids, right? So they actually do kind of need foreign workers. now in more menial jobs that's kind of the issue at the moment that's always the fine print it is i'm print the 7-eleven now needs people from vietnam i guess this is uh to plant rice yeah maybe i don't know well rice plant is weird because that's mostly in the family a lot of like like my family farms but they do like vegetables they don't do rice probably because it's labor intensive and annoying but a lot of students i have in things just when it's fall everyone in the family is like kind of like obligated to go do the rice harvest have you ever harvested rice no i've harvested potatoes i don't think it's the same thing it's not the same thing like i said my family doesn't want to do rice it's too labor-intensive and annoying so like i guess the

00:28:36 - 00:29:38 | Speaker 4:

the main clans here is heart and fang they're the ones that are beefing for the most of it and then you've got spine but when they actually go to see spine it's just one dude that's left which also kind of makes sense though because he's the entire backbone and you can't really ever get rid of spine like even even if you were to take an animal a dragon and let's say that the dragons were real because they were and then after the dragon dies and decomposes and everything the spine is essentially the thing that you see remaining from that at least from a distance so like again heart fang spine is like this backbone uh like the cold guy this is from tong right and then talon is like the claw or the hand and this is the floating market so if there was going to be an analogy to free trade and open market that's like exactly what talon exists for right and that's and that's the first uh person that heart ends up bonding with as they go and they see talon which is just like a kid is like the the last emperor style right like let me let me see the king and the

00:29:38 - 00:29:59 | Speaker 3:

king's like 14 yeah that's another one where it's like that's just mildly confusing i don't know because they're being given this. Let's assume that this movie is basically made for an American audience. I mean, it's an international thing, too. But there's a lot of things that are new. So I don't know. I felt like I was very confused by the Kid King for a little while.

00:30:00 - 00:30:04 | Speaker 2:

really i don't know i mean the sword in the stone technically is is a kid king

00:30:04 - 00:30:09 | Speaker 1:

yeah yeah okay i i guess that's it there's versions of it although my mind because we're

00:30:09 - 00:30:16 | Speaker 2:

talking asian my mind goes right to the last emperor yeah sure why not uh when they get to

00:30:16 - 00:30:32 | Speaker 1:

the town by the way which part is the town and it looked an awful lot like coco town to me so i know the cultural framework's different all but i definitely got that vibe with it with the night market town what's coco town uh the movie coco the the afterlife oh right yeah yeah i mean the

00:30:32 - 00:30:50 | Speaker 2:

had that vibe to it even though coco's town when you say that i get multiple uh visuals in my mind right my mind's eye i'm seeing the black light posters and like the cool skeletons and there's like a very specific aesthetic to it when you're saying the town in this movie it's just like oh

00:30:50 - 00:31:18 | Speaker 1:

yeah i mean yeah there was there was yeah there was a lot more going for the coco town to be to be sure but um just looking for you know like vibes that repeat through movies that is most things in here like if i like reya oh milan kind of did that vibe better right with the the warrior girl uh from from the far east i mean spirited away you want a dragon watch spirited away that's like one of the best dragon things ever turns into a human as well right you know what the the more

00:31:18 - 00:32:45 | Speaker 2:

that i thought about it too out of all the characters that we see in this movie it almost feels like raya's has the most boring of all of the adventures you know even though we we see that she finds a dragon and the dragon immediately turns into a person voiced by aquafina it almost feels like they're burying the lead a little bit to get rid of the dragon so quickly and then just show but even even if you ignore that part because that's like legitimately the only interesting part is that Raya just happens to meet a dragon which is Awkwafina but imagine if this movie was following the fangirl Namari infinitely more interesting imagine if it was following several minutes here and there where Tong's entire tribe gets wiped out and he has to kind of keep up these like I don't know I almost feel like there's a cool like Revenant sort of movie here you know minus Leonardo DiCaprio plus Disney animation but I want to see that guy's backstory I want to see the Droon's backstory like where the hell did this mindless plague come from that seems legitimately interesting and you're like well let's talk about Raya I don't know I almost also feel that this is like you didn't watch Captain Planet but Captain Planet had all of the elements and then there was Heart and Heart was the most boring out of all of the Captain Planet characters as well he was an Indian dude that had like a little monkey I almost feel like you can't make Heart as interesting as any other part of the body

00:32:45 - 00:33:08 | Speaker 1:

no it's like how you know the villain is usually the most interesting person in a movie or whatever right um also yeah it's kind of warmed over moana too like moana had this going on better moana you know like the mcguffin is so big here it's like we have to put these shards together just mcguffin all day without like you said we're not hearing enough of the backstory to make that interesting

00:33:08 - 00:34:06 | Speaker 2:

enough but moana's friend ends up being a literal god and then she's not really competing with anyone else she sort of is the princess of the sea i guess to oversimplify it in this one there's so many there's five different tribes and technically they would all have a princess even though i guess spine has only got the one dude now but once they un stone everybody once everyone sobers up from the party then i assume that they also have a princess in that tribe so i guess it just it makes it's less impactful for example what was the movie ralph breaks the internet where she goes and sees all the different princesses if there was a movie that was just about all the disney princesses before they each have their own individual movies it wouldn't really be as interesting right like the whole premise is that the movie's about the disney princess and not her sharing the limelight with five other princesses so yeah this just seems like

00:34:06 - 00:34:18 | Speaker 1:

a perfect storm of not quite enough in the cooker and then like you know the cooker being on low power because of the pandemic and stuff so maybe this just has like a pandemic pallor about it's

00:34:18 - 00:34:57 | Speaker 2:

an issue you know the other big i think the biggest thing is that one of the main threads up until you get into the 21st century but what really what disney built their entire brand around was legitimate folklore specific folklore that they could really tap into even if walt told you not to read the original source material, but it was still tapping into something very specific. And I guess when you try and cast a wide net like this, where you're just like, eh, Southeast Asia, eh, dragons, right? Without it actually connecting to something specific and historical, maybe there was something in here, but I didn't catch any of that.

00:34:58 - 00:35:21 | Speaker 1:

Yeah, and it's going through what? model writers model directors so any you know sharp insight might have just been lost somewhere along the way i'm looking at my notes you're right in the middle i'm like i have to look at the plot i've completely lost track of what's supposed to be happening at this point even though it's simple like you said simple but like all the like mechanics of minute to minute are kind of like somewhat convoluted i guess because they don't have anything else to do i mean but i

00:35:21 - 00:36:22 | Speaker 2:

mean it's it's a pretty straight like a very linear storyline right they they have a single power gem and they have to go and collect the rest of them so they basically have an incentive something that drives them to visit all the different places right where they go to tail talon spine fang and then back to heart again so here's the entire journey laid out for you but i guess that's also it's formulaic and that you already know where you're going to go and it also maybe doesn't follow the hero's journey as much because how does the main character how does raya actually change throughout this because she starts out as the one that doesn't trust Fang but then Fang immediately shows that they are not to be trusted and then the entire story arc her entire character arc is that at the very end, spoiler alert is that she trusts Fang again with the gems and then that was the secret all along was the friends that you make along the way

00:36:22 - 00:36:34 | Speaker 1:

right, although Namari is I mean never really kind of comes around she's still kind of the villain by the end of the movie more or less or at least the antagonist I guess I'm not going to call her a villain

00:36:34 - 00:36:53 | Speaker 2:

well she has to remain Fang right she still has to remain like the political assassin aggressor archetype because that's literally and I guess that's part of it right that you don't necessarily want your heart to go through an entire arc like you still need it to be your heart and if you have a Fang you want your Fang to continue being a Fang

00:36:53 - 00:36:58 | Speaker 1:

yeah no one changes at the end of the movie there's still hearts there's still fangs the

00:36:58 - 00:37:26 | Speaker 2:

spines doing his thing right if honestly it almost seems like everyone should have turned into dragons at the end that would have solved so many of the issues or if or if like as they went along she starts becoming more of a dragon or something more dragons seriously it's starting to bug me now that this is a movie about dragons and as soon as you get a dragon they turn them to a human for a majority of the movie why do they do that looks like elsa when she is a dragon

00:37:26 - 00:37:50 | Speaker 1:

like i was just thinking like one of my favorite parts of the movie is when they're trying to figure out the heist or whatever and sisu the dragon the aquafina dragon and does you know the the the dumb thing that ends up working i guess in the end i'm like yeah toy story 4 just did that a year earlier with kian peel doing that you know the insane like um getting the key thing right and i was like that nate that joke was done better the year previous everything in here was

00:37:50 - 00:38:05 | Speaker 2:

done better in a different movie i i legitimately did like the sidekick but since the sidekick couldn't talk it limits its ability and also do you remember the sidekick's name no but i was

00:38:05 - 00:38:09 | Speaker 1:

thinking moana had the sidekick that didn't talk it was super annoying and that was fantastic

00:38:09 - 00:38:55 | Speaker 2:

this one was tuk-tuk and tuk-tuk is a cross between i guess like a gerbil and a roly-poly like a beetle type thing so it's an insect on the outside but it's sort of a mammal on the inside i guess like a hedgehog might be a better example if a hedgehog had like a beetle's exoskeleton on its back or maybe an armadillo i guess but she rides this thing around so i guess it goes from being small to also being huge and i didn't pick up on how it's able to change size like that that's in a cartoon is that there was it was it not explained like why sometimes she can ride it and it's like the size of a car and then other times like she can fit it in its in her pocket

00:38:55 - 00:39:13 | Speaker 1:

you can get away with that a lot more in animation let's like what about american godzilla everyone's still pissed that godzilla keeps changing sizes in the 1998 godzilla right but in a cartoon nobody notices that much you know you expect things to change size i guess so another just example where

00:39:13 - 00:39:19 | Speaker 2:

i don't i i like the sidekick but i can't even really tell exactly what it was or how it worked

00:39:19 - 00:39:32 | Speaker 1:

like i can't draw a picture of it right now even though i think i have a mental image you know uh i mean sonic the hedgehog but beetle beetle the hedgehog sonic sonic the beetle the sonic

00:39:32 - 00:39:59 | Speaker 2:

the beetle okay i'll go with that movie and then also there like what i was saying in the beginning where the the droon came which was a mindless i'm paraphrasing what the narration says that there were dragons but the droon came a mindless peg uh turned everyone to stone the dragons fought it and then they turned to stone how how do you fight an ethereal smoky plague that turns you to

00:40:00 - 00:40:29 | Speaker 4:

stone that's not really ever explained to me either right and the only thing that happens is that at the end of the movie after everyone gets turned to stone again the gems just being in the same vicinity as each other it like breaks the curse but the curse they explain had nothing to do with the gems it had to do with everyone trusting each other and once everyone trusted each other then i guess you know everyone comes back from turning in the stone that's a mistake

00:40:29 - 00:40:52 | Speaker 3:

hollywood just has been making for the past 30 years it's like was it the the 2000 the mid 2000s fantastic four galactus shows up and he's just a giant cloud or you know a lot of movies where it's the the big brown pile of cgi goop and it's just like nothing distinct right uh you need to have a distinct um you know hey make make the purple ethereal stuff turn into another dragon or

00:40:52 - 00:40:58 | Speaker 4:

something you know that would work the bible's got legion which is just like a a huge sort of

00:40:58 - 00:41:09 | Speaker 3:

swarm of pigs right yeah yeah give me some you know some wheels of fire in the sky or something you know the amorphous blob it's real purple evil right that's that's the most i got out of it it's

00:41:09 - 00:41:38 | Speaker 1:

00:42:10 - 00:42:17 | Speaker 4:

part of this entire movie in my opinion are the farting beetles that fart like rainbow pixie dust

00:42:17 - 00:42:25 | Speaker 3:

yeah you know you gotta do a um benefit to those around you when you let one rip huh but they but

00:42:25 - 00:43:20 | Speaker 4:

they actually they make a little fart noise and glitter shoots out of their ass and they have to sneak down a corridor filled with these and that becomes a major plot point is that they trigger these farting beetles to fart a bunch of glitter into the the air basically and it serves as cover serves like a smoke cloud for them what do you think it smells like honest i mean it if it's really glitter like that it probably smells like blood because now you're inhaling all sorts of microplastics with sharp edges and if it's a cloud that thick then it's lacerating the inside of your nasal cavity and puncturing your mucous membrane so i'm going to go with blood okay so you're you're dying as you're charmed by i think so or at the very least at the end of this you are now going to be infertile and possibly have cancer yeah as i'm looking through i i wrote in my notes

00:43:20 - 00:43:43 | Speaker 3:

i'm really becoming worried that i don't have much to say about this movie which i'm now having a second um panic attack about that as well so i don't really like it just went right in and out of my mind like i can remember moana will spirit away i remember perfectly this is this what this one's a whiff i guess which is too bad because it this is like um you know the the and the tombstone

00:43:43 - 00:44:29 | Speaker 4:

for 2020 ryan the last dragon you know have you ever heard the word binturi before one more time binturi this is what they call each other and there's even a part where raya is talking about namari and she's like oh that binturi and her dad's like raya you know come on we don't use that language and it comes up a few other times elsewhere and i was wondering if it's if it's a real word b-i-n-t-u-r-i it's either a real word or it's a made-up word like in battle star galactica they have frack so they can like hey frack you and like shut the frack up right without actually having to curse and i just wonder is bentori just the version of calling someone a bitch

00:44:29 - 00:44:48 | Speaker 3:

in a disney movie it might be there's also um just shades of uh obscenity in different languages like in japanese there's nothing particularly obscene you can say you can say horrible things but even like dirty words aren't really like that dirty you know that's hard to believe based on some

00:44:48 - 00:45:00 | Speaker 4:

crazy artwork i've seen from the 19th century out of japan oh like hey here yes yes if you construct a sentence that is dirty yes

00:45:00 - 00:45:08 | Speaker 1:

of course you can do that i'm just saying like like we don't they don't really seem to have f bombs you know so i never know if i should get annoyed at a kid when he's saying something or

00:45:08 - 00:45:25 | Speaker 2:

not you know well so according to my real-time google search ben tory is indeed a fictional insult made specifically for this movie so the way that they use it she when she says that ben tory she's saying that bitch there's no doubt in my mind that's exactly what she means when she

00:45:25 - 00:45:46 | Speaker 1:

says it because the way that she says it what's like this this movie is like disney's cultural appropriation thing but it's not even like uh polite enough to just actually focus and and on one culture right uh to conduct background research the production team traveled to leos vietnam cambodia thailand singapore malaysia indonesia and the philippines those are all

00:45:46 - 00:45:52 | Speaker 2:

very different places just gotta mix them together whatever i mean malaysia and the philippines are

00:45:52 - 00:46:02 | Speaker 1:

gonna be different so now we have this fantastical kingdom that's supposed to be like all of them i guess is you know i mean i get that with filmmakers hey let's go travel all those places that sounds

00:46:02 - 00:47:08 | Speaker 2:

fun if you were to make a comparison on this to say like let's say that you wanted to make a movie for america right but instead of having a texan and a californian and a new york and a new jersey guy and like a midwestern guy like each of them as specific stereotypes like caricaturistic stereotypes then who is the perfect general generic american right it loses all of its edge the only the only time usually when someone says american too and they're um from another country that's never been to america it's either like a hollywood thing or it's wild west that's you like usually american it's like a wild west cowboy sort of thing right so the fact that everyone just kind of gets melded into general Asian here. Maybe they should have gone hard. I guess Tong should have been Mongolian or something and had a stronger Mongolian look to him or something. But then I guess who becomes Fang? Which specific distinct Asian culture represents the traitors and the conniving liars and thieves?

00:47:10 - 00:47:17 | Speaker 1:

Yeah, yeah. Maybe that's why they avoided going specific, right? Because they can't be like hard as Thailand. They're great.

00:47:17 - 00:47:23 | Speaker 2:

you know those laosians i'm asking matt now which which asian culture are the liars and thieves that

00:47:23 - 00:47:31 | Speaker 1:

would make the most sense for fang oh geez um well i mean you go north korea right okay that's

00:47:31 - 00:47:38 | Speaker 2:

the safe bet yeah everyone hates north korea so you can just yeah i'm a i do get in weird obsessive

00:47:38 - 00:47:41 | Speaker 1:

moods and start watching travel videos in north korea where people did go on a north korean tour

00:47:41 - 00:47:57 | Speaker 2:

those are fascinating to watch as you say that this movie just became infinitely more interesting if it was raya and the last dragon in north korea yeah sure but yeah they didn't choose i guess is

00:47:57 - 00:48:17 | Speaker 1:

the main thing and i don't think this one even has much korean going on you ask well americans yeah western stuff because you'll see the american steakhouse not far from me there's a restaurant which is a yaki curry like fried curry and for some reason the restaurant is like road six uh route 66 themes even though i don't think americans ever eat fried curry but yeah it is good but it's

00:48:17 - 00:48:31 | Speaker 2:

not something we would usually get there yeah no if you were to have curry in america it's gonna have like a either a southeast asian theme to it right exactly um and you're asking like i was

00:48:31 - 00:49:04 | Speaker 1:

trying to think of the the typical american um yeah cowboys and hollywood's a big part of it um we have the the morning dramas like state tv nhk has the highly melodramatic morning drama where it comes on at eight in the morning it's 15 minutes monday to friday you know every once in a while they'll have like a a foreign character an american character which is um just like always like written ridiculously stereotype typically and and things like that and by the you know the five um western actors that they have hanging around tokyo for that

00:49:04 - 00:50:00 | Speaker 2:

sort of thing i'm i'm still deconstructing the remarkable unremarkableness of parts of this movie right and like the storyline here's the other part too that i think maybe my own personal bias maybe you pick on it too is that inherently i do have a distrust for other people and i do think that they're going to come and like steal my sacred gems or whatever the your thing is right That's kind of the history of humans in general. So for the message of this movie to just be trust everyone, I think maybe at a deep level inside my reptilian brain, it's going like, uh-uh, you better not be paying too much attention to this movie. This movie is going to poison you. They're like, this is going to hurt you in the long run. So I almost feel that there's a self-preservation aspect of both of us that as you watch this, you're just like, yeah, no, that's...

00:50:00 - 00:50:26 | Speaker 4:

like that's cool that it's a movie and everything and again it's weird to juxtapose the ending message which is trust everybody and everyone can come and have this big unity while the very beginning it literally shows battles with battle axes and the dad gets shot in the leg and he basically succumbs to like getting shot in the leg and I don't know it just felt like it started with such a sharp edge and then you kind of end up with a butter knife

00:50:26 - 00:50:58 | Speaker 5:

yeah I was I don't know what this was actually rated, but I guess it had enough for a PG. So I usually do the box office thing, but we are deep pandemic now. And in this case, the box office no longer means anything because it was released on March 5th, 2021. So 100 million plus budget. They only know how much they spent on this thing. 130 got in returns, but it was apparently streamed a lot, which is that good? I don't know. I think nobody knows if that's good because streaming seems to be like shattering at this moment.

00:50:58 - 00:51:27 | Speaker 4:

we've been down this road a few times, but you're never going to find any of my dollars inside of one of those box office numbers, even if I watch the movie. But then again, I feel like I've removed myself from that entire ecosystem. Cause even if I stream it, like I'm not paying for it, I'm not going to elaborate on that further, but even movies that I love and movies that I hate, none of them are making a dime off of me aside from occupying space in my brain for the rest of my life. If they, if they like latch in somehow,

00:51:27 - 00:51:48 | Speaker 5:

which this one kind of didn't maybe i'm turning an old fart but i am getting less in the mood to go to the movie theater right you know it's like hey do i go get a pizza and go to the hot spring or do i go to the movie theater and pizza and hot spring has been winning most days like oh as this new star wars comes out i know you're not going but uh you know i'm like i might just do the pizza in the onsen i don't think i'm gonna go see that you know

00:51:48 - 00:52:58 | Speaker 4:

you know what too man and not not to get on too much of a tangent now on like the movie experience But I guess this is the first work-from-home pandemic movie in Disney's catalog, so it's worth going on a slight tangent. But the next iteration here are these freaking AR glasses, and they are getting pretty impressive and very small and lightweight to the point where you could just put on... They still look a little bit awkward, but it's not like a huge VR headset anymore. But you can put glasses on and now have a 170 to a 200 foot screen, you know, relatively. So if you want to go to the hot springs and watch a movie, you can do that. And that's not really ever been possible at any other point in history that even if you wanted to watch a movie at home, you still got to have like a TV and, you know, like you've got to be a place that has the movie that you can stream. But if you could just put a pair of glasses on and now you're watching a movie. so i i feel like i'm more in the future than disney is and all this box office nonsense like but this is like boomer metrics boomer metrics there we go uh yeah follow up to freakonomics

00:52:58 - 00:53:15 | Speaker 5:

i believe yeah i'm just sitting here like what what do i want to see in the theater anytime soon uh maybe i'll go see disclosure day in the theater because that has the spectacle thing going for it unless the reviews say it's crap i mean one of the things with the star wars let's see the review so far like lukewarm right i'm like well that's not enough for me to bother going to see it you know

00:53:15 - 00:53:35 | Speaker 4:

the i really can't because going to the movies now it's usually because i want to be fully engrossed in the movie i want to get completely lost in it and feel like i'm in another play which i and i think the only movie i've actually gone to the theater to have seen in the last L-E-T-E-N-E-T

00:54:33 - 00:55:00 | Speaker 4:

half decade at least beetle uh beetlejuice beetlejuice which we talked about before and then also because i had some friends that were in town and we just wanted to go out and do something so we went and saw a movie and we saw the 28 years later not the bone temple one like the one that came before the bone temple version with the jimmy savills man still i just go right to sleep within like five to ten minutes so i guess it's like a moot point that even if you get me to the movie theater i just paid forty dollars to take a nap

00:55:00 - 00:55:12 | Speaker 1:

nap wow your theories cost that much okay oh yeah well i mean uh if i'm gonna take a nap i'm gonna take a nap in imax or in 4d right i'm not just gonna go and sit in some cheap you know matinee

00:55:12 - 00:55:29 | Speaker 2:

for 18 right uh anyway yeah anything else you want to throw out on this one like i said i've been stressing out the whole time trying to find things to say about it which is like last week we did gi joe and i couldn't shut up so you know it's it's it's weird how it works sometimes

00:55:29 - 00:55:40 | Speaker 1:

i did like one aspect of sisu and again this is weird because i guess i'm not polarized by aquafina i know she's got a unique voice and a unique personality and everything i did not have

00:55:40 - 00:55:46 | Speaker 2:

the net i don't have the nanny uh wretch factor so uh yeah honestly i didn't hate fran drescher

00:55:46 - 00:57:15 | Speaker 1:

either i i can definitely see how someone hearing the voice would make them immediately say like i turn this off and shoot whatever that like that cat needs to be put out of its misery I can understand someone thinking that when they hear the voice of either of these even Awkwafina I can imagine there's at least one person out there that's like someone put that cat down like it's put it out of its misery but I think that she did a great job in this character and the Sisu character as a half dragon that can convert into a human under some unknown logic I'm sure there's a logic and a formula that's explained in the movie it never clicked with me is like when is she a human when is she a dragon can she do it on her own does it only happen when they capture a new gem or whatever because each gem unlocks a new ability for her because when we meet her she kind of explains that even though it's sisu's picture and all the scrolls and everything and it's like here's the last dragon she's holding like one of the gemstones and she's like i was just kind of the last one alive like i wasn't actually particularly good at anything i'm not really strong she can't fly she can't really do any cool dragon stuff she was just literally the last one alive and that was the last one anyone took pictures and made paintings of so i kind of liked that the dragon that we discover is basically the lamest dragon possible and then slowly builds up her powers by collecting these gems kind of

00:57:15 - 00:57:47 | Speaker 2:

like megaman i guess is that a dated reference i think you can do megaman i was actually thinking of um deadpool and wolverine maybe that's kind of a recent film trend where we get the wolverine in that movie if you've seen it's supposed to be the worst wolverine he's the crappiest wolverine in all the multiverses and you know obviously by the end of the movie he's he's he's hero wolverine guy stabbing people with his claws but you know the whole thing is oh oh deadpool gets stuck with the worst wolverine so here reo gets stuck with the worst dragon man i can only imagine how awesome

00:57:47 - 00:58:15 | Speaker 1:

if if disney could just get their head out of their last dragon out of their uh bean bean turi then he can remove their head from their benturi we could have such an awesome wolverine silver samurai japanese ultra violent version of x-men and marvel right like they're the ones that can make all of that happen but i also feel like they would never do it well also that it's like

00:58:15 - 00:58:26 | Speaker 2:

when can you redo something because they had the wolverine i think that it was still fox the time you get a crappy version of silver samurai you get some japanese stuff uh it's not a worst movie but

00:58:26 - 00:58:43 | Speaker 1:

it's not as good as the miniseries and also they already did big hero six but they did like a weird version where it's about a robot that helps grandma through dementia instead of big hero six which was actually about freaking silver samurai and wolverine yeah like when we did that movie

00:58:43 - 00:58:56 | Speaker 2:

and it's like wait a minute the team is in this movie and you just don't notice because yeah because it just doesn't work that way anymore you know like the silver samurai character it's actually in baymax right but it doesn't really it's not clear

00:58:56 - 00:59:40 | Speaker 1:

the other part about sisu is that so all of the dragon powers that they find when they get one of these new gemstones which also i mean the captain planet thing i think holds up it's like literally the exact same premise as captain planet that with my power with your powers combined and then that becomes like the solution to whatever problem that they're having so the dragon powers are rain slash water or i would say weather manipulation but i guess this would be like storm if you were going to go like an x-men route and then there's the shape-shifting between dragon into a human which is the first ability that she ends up getting and i guess that would be morph if we keep with the x-men yeah from from the animated series because i think morph was

00:59:40 - 00:59:45 | Speaker 2:

made specifically for the cartoon or if you want to get really dumb you could say mimic who i think

00:59:45 - 01:00:00 | Speaker 1:

takes professor x's place in the 60s fair then then you've got fog slash mist which is like but wait a minute isn't that just kind of another version of water just smaller water droplets That's like, why does that get?

01:00:00 - 01:00:25 | Speaker 3:

its own thing but and then also when when sisu gets the water ability it seemed like now she can jump through the air and make like little clouds out of water vapor and like stand on them but it's clearly magical water vapor that's making her able to do this and then heavy water and then there's like a glow energy sort of ability kind of like a nondescript you know just cool dragon stuff

If you need an attorney, call me. I'm Brenton Goodman, and I'm proud to carry on the legacy of my grandfather, Fred Levin. And just like my grandfather, if you call me, I'll personally return the call. That's 850-432-1111.

01:01:25 - 01:01:33 | Speaker 3:

dazzler dazzler oh my god great or even jubilee i guess yeah sure so um because that dazzler was

01:01:33 - 01:01:52 | Speaker 5:

supposed to be diana ross yeah yeah yeah the disco queen yes that was the island records character yeah and then they screwed up her costume because she was in full disco gear in the late 70s and then later they're like they put in like 80s slam and like a workout aerobic suit this could have

01:01:52 - 01:02:04 | Speaker 3:

been a mediocre Marvel movie instead of a mediocre generic East Asian like Eastern Asian dragon movie and I think the mediocre Marvel movie would have been better

01:02:04 - 01:02:18 | Speaker 5:

well you can you can go watch that if you want let me double check the title what is there a movie with Dazzler in it oh not with Dazzler actually there might be I don't they kind of like soft put half these characters you know it's like gambits in movies right

01:02:18 - 01:02:29 | Speaker 3:

you don't say that the character that was literally based on disco genre doesn't pull in crowds anymore 50 years later um i guess the uh

01:02:29 - 01:02:42 | Speaker 5:

was it shang chi and the legend of the 10 rings would be the marvel version of this which also has aquafina in it so and uh elementals too right i didn't see that one but yeah that that

01:02:42 - 01:03:09 | Speaker 3:

i someone must sparkle in that movie they're elementals now i wonder is it a coincidence because you said they started this movie pre-pandemic and then it just happened that the pandemic happened during the course of making this movie right but the bad guy of this movie is the pandemic it's literally a mindless plague that isolates everybody from each other and turns you into stone essentially

01:03:09 - 01:03:17 | Speaker 5:

yeah that's why Bob Iger quit in January 2020 right they're getting ready getting ready for it

01:03:17 - 01:03:22 | Speaker 3:

he got the advance notice this was like 9 11 getting like like Larry Silverstein getting

01:03:22 - 01:03:32 | Speaker 5:

the advance notice of course then they need a back because I guess I don't know it was JPEG that big of disaster I don't know I don't know how corporations work well I don't run one if

01:03:32 - 01:04:24 | Speaker 3:

they put me in charge of just making some of these creative decisions in these uh Disney movies I feel like it would be a net benefit to everyone involved it would be more money made more people interested in disney more headlines like for example i would have like some sort of false flag 9-11 b plot in this movie automatically will be instantly more memorable we did that was in chicken little yeah i guess i guess chicken little if chicken little had the fidelity of graphics that this movie had it would be so much better of a movie i feel like the chicken little movie was held back by the the visual technology that they had to work with you know what i mean but if yeah if they remade chicken little now i'm not saying for disney to remake chicken little but if they had a you know made it in 2026 instead of i guess in like the

01:04:24 - 01:04:34 | Speaker 5:

what the early 2010s that that movie had more i guess was more inspired but they didn't know what they were doing right this movie they absolutely know what they're doing but i find

01:04:34 - 01:04:59 | Speaker 3:

no inspiration in it uh and the the little child king what is it bound i think bound was it um is the child boat captain there was also this whole premise of like cooking kanji and cooking shrimp constantly and i didn't know if i was missing some sort of an inside joke or if that was just their their personalities that they just cook

01:05:00 - 01:05:09 | Speaker 4:

rimp and kanji and say the word kanji a whole bunch of times because i guess that's a reminder of like hey remember we're in southeast asia if you couldn't tell by something the characters alone

01:05:09 - 01:05:21 | Speaker 3:

yeah it really does seem a lot like just let's tick the box now we have some uh cultural ip on southeast asia so if we ever want to open a disneyland there we can do a rail ride you know

01:05:21 - 01:05:40 | Speaker 4:

this honestly might be the the only time that i'm recommending this and not being sarcastic about it but they could have just had someone in a wheelchair or like a cleft palate or something and that also would have made this movie a little bit more interesting right like what if what if uh raya was like literally had severe case of autism

01:05:40 - 01:06:04 | Speaker 3:

yeah well half the characters in the movie is probably doing to get right down to it but uh yeah the biggest in this movie has is yeah yeah just it's it's too much of a we'll cast say that last part again i said i'm going to completely forget about this movie as soon as

01:06:04 - 01:06:45 | Speaker 4:

you hit the record button at the end of this podcast there was also um i guess the the food part too with the conju and the shrimp is because the movie starts based on like communal food sharing which i guess would be one of the earlier reasons that like tribes would get together except none of the fang didn't really bring anything to the barbecue right they just showed up and then took over the barbecue so there was no like no communal version of that but when they're on the boat and when they're traveling around and like they start to work with each other that's when I guess it becomes less of a point of contention like no because doesn't congee come from rice or have I got that mistaken

01:06:45 - 01:06:47 | Speaker 3:

um

01:06:47 - 01:06:50 | Speaker 4:

like congee's like a brace like porridge or something

01:06:50 - 01:06:55 | Speaker 3:

every time you say kanji i'm thinking of uh chinese characters in japan because they call

01:06:55 - 01:07:55 | Speaker 4:

those kanji so oh this one is is c-o-n-g-e-e not k-a-n-j-i right that's also the phonetic american spelling of it yeah so i i answer is don't know i guess it's more of a chinese thing then because i remember i distinctly have ordered kanji before and i didn't realize when we went to like a traditional chinese restaurant where everything is basically in chinese and then if you're lucky there might be one american word that you can say or point to and then there was like a picture next to it there was a whole section on congee and it was like pork congee and chicken congee and beef congee like just it was all like something congee and i was like well i don't even know if i like congee so i'm not going to order one of these expensive ones and And I was like, oh, they have a bowl of just congee for like a couple bucks. And I ordered it, not realizing that it would just be like ordering rice with nothing to go with it. No salt, no seasoning, nothing. Just like a rice soup.

01:08:55 - 01:08:58 | Speaker 3:

Well, if it's good rice, you know, you might be able to rock it, but.

01:09:00 - 01:10:00 | Speaker 4:

Okay, so here's the rest of my notes on the, because I have like a little Disney formula checklist it's not standardized but i kind of went through mentally so there's no traditional villain in this movie fang is kind of the villain but also the sidekick that like the friend that you're making over the course of it and like that she relies on namari right and then you've got the nebulous black plague pandemic you know cloud which doesn't make for a strong villain the the actual villain is just the concept of distrust it's just the concept of you know having paranoia in some way so go figure paranoid american doesn't like a movie where they're trying to get rid of paranoia it it has some trauma it has like the intergenerational conflict where the dad is fighting with the daughter and even in fat and heart and even in fang the mom is fighting with her daughter. They kind of disagree on that.

01:10:00 - 01:10:11 | Speaker 2:

technique as well until the daughter proves that she is a true bentori and then the mom's like all right you can run the military you spicy little bentori i'm gonna start calling people that no

01:10:11 - 01:10:15 | Speaker 1:

one's gonna know what that means um a few people saw this is the third most streamed movie of the

01:10:15 - 01:10:51 | Speaker 2:

year there's no evil queen even though you kind of have that that evil mother figure of fang but she's not really like any kind of evil queen also there is no romance whatsoever in this movie right i don't think there's any sort of um like a guy and a girl or a girl and a girl or a guy and a guy because again we're disney in the 21st century but none of that exists in this movie when that's usually one of the staples is that there's some sort of you know romantic relationship that's being pursued or resolved over the course of one of these i think there's basically no major

01:10:51 - 01:11:13 | Speaker 1:

male characters uh the dad well he gets stoned right at the beginning and uh yeah that's and tong tong but he's you know again he's he's got sidekick energy on his tent as you know like a 10 year old right so um yeah oh there's on tudick again because he's in every freaking

01:11:13 - 01:11:20 | Speaker 2:

disney movie now if you had to boil this entire movie down to a lesson what would that lesson be

01:11:20 - 01:11:34 | Speaker 1:

don't watch it late at night you're gonna fall asleep okay that's that's what i got here uh don't don't trust anybody they'll screw you over well no i mean the lesson for me was trust

01:11:34 - 01:11:45 | Speaker 2:

trust your enemies that's what they're teaching you if you were to watch this all the way to the end and try and take to heart what they use as the resolution of the movie it's

01:11:45 - 01:12:08 | Speaker 1:

trust your enemy i guess to it yeah yeah so who who's your enemy anyway but my my review is whiff whiff of a movie you know again can't keep it in my memory like this is this is like really the most stressed out i've been doing this podcast because i'm like i watched this i reviewed it this morning it just will not stay in my head

01:12:08 - 01:12:26 | Speaker 2:

i mean if maybe this that is your enemy then it's a it's a disney movie for a cult disney podcast that doesn't stay in your head long enough to be able to talk about it there we go that that's that's my review for this one okay i'm gonna say mine is burning alive in a fire

01:12:26 - 01:12:48 | Speaker 1:

oh yeah that sounds by like bad news um again the imagery even the stuff i like it's like Dr. Strange and Coco had kind of the better versions of all this stuff. They're fighting over MacGuffin. Yeah, yeah. That's really all I got. It becomes Mortal Kombat with kid gloves at one point, but I want to see Mortal Kombat. I don't want to see Mortal Kombat with kid gloves.

01:12:48 - 01:12:57 | Speaker 2:

It starts out that way. It starts out Mortal Kombat and then it just turns into kind of just milquetoast, like we are the world, hands across America. That's kind of where it grew.

01:12:57 - 01:13:07 | Speaker 1:

I hate that song when I was six years old. you hated it when you were six yeah it came out when i was six and i hated it immediately

01:13:07 - 01:13:12 | Speaker 2:

how you were just a music snob like straight straight from birth or what

01:13:12 - 01:13:18 | Speaker 1:

i guess so i you know i think prince didn't do it because he thought it was too lame so he was

01:13:18 - 01:13:40 | Speaker 2:

correct i feel like that might be a hate crime to to not like we are the world as a six-year-old at least or at least that that should be one of those tests where if your kid's torturing animals or if they hate We Are the World, then maybe just keep an extra eye on them. Check out The Shed every once in a while so they're not like Jeffrey Dahmer, you know, taxidermy's things.

01:13:41 - 01:13:46 | Speaker 1:

We were doing that with G.I. Joe figures, as I mentioned last week. So that was happening.

01:13:47 - 01:13:55 | Speaker 2:

I wonder if this one had any ancillary toys and stuff too, right? I'm sure they probably had like a Happy Meal thing going on.

01:13:55 - 01:14:02 | Speaker 1:

Probably like five TV series. um well actually it looks like it's just this movie as far as i can tell

01:14:02 - 01:14:42 | Speaker 2:

no brand i mean it seems like an easy thing that they could revisit but then again if you if you're in i don't know i'm not talking the right person because you're not actually southeast asian you're just in southeast asia i'm in east asia there's no south in this part so so even if but if you're in a you're closer to southeast asia than i am i guess that's my offense so even if you're in asia if you can't specifically identify like oh that character that tribe that represents this particular region or culture then there's none of those characters for you to really like specifically identify with yeah also yeah it'd be like if you watch

01:14:42 - 01:14:59 | Speaker 1:

the movie where it was just like nonsensically blending korean japanese and um you know chinese stuff together right like it just like it doesn't make sense at that point i mean you could put it a fantastical kingdom but now why are you using these cultural touchstones i'm calling it now that

01:14:59 - 01:15:00 | Speaker 2:

the sequel

01:15:00 - 01:15:04 | Speaker 1:

or the remake for raya and the last dragon is going to be directed by christopher nolan

01:15:04 - 01:15:15 | Speaker 2:

sure um yeah i'm seeing it seems like it's just this movie's kind of one and done you know like it doesn't seem to have any legs i don't think it's had anything going on the park about it or

01:15:15 - 01:15:34 | Speaker 1:

anything either so so the the deepest really message from this one is that the entire world is broken up as a dead dragon body they're slowly putting themselves back together and the audience i guess would be like the kidney stones in this analogy yeah yeah people are what screw everything

01:15:34 - 01:15:40 | Speaker 2:

up right without people it'll be perfect or dragons the dragons can stay right this whole

01:15:40 - 01:16:07 | Speaker 1:

point we like the dragons i would assume the dragons fought amongst each other too but i guess not i guess that it was only they're all happily flying around in the last shot right they seem pretty happy about it but also dragons are supposed to be like why do they breathe fire and have fangs they've got to be fighting something but like what is a dragon like an Asian dragon what is a dragon fighting what is he biting it would be other dragons though or like people

01:16:07 - 01:16:22 | Speaker 2:

reference back to spirited away where they think about that sort of thing of course yeah it's rude to compare movies but hey you put a dragon in that's another dragon anime right so

01:16:22 - 01:16:24 | Speaker 1:

Ben Tori please

01:16:24 - 01:16:29 | Speaker 2:

yeah uh i don't know shall we wrap this one up you want to tell people where to find your dragons

01:16:29 - 01:17:13 | Speaker 1:

uh do i have anything dragon related i don't know if i if i do yet oh i've got reptilians i've got uh it's granted it's a very adult series but i do have a story about shape-shifting reptilians that have fangs they don't breathe fire yet i guess i could make them breathe fire um you should check that out and plenty more on paranoid american.com where i've been working on comic books for over 20 years we got 60 different titles i think i've added up somewhere around 2 000 pages worth of artwork across all the different titles so i guarantee you that you'll find something you like and all of it is better than raya and the last dragon for for some podcasts

01:17:13 - 01:17:34 | Speaker 2:

that might be better on raya last dragon go to podcast to podcast cs.org talk about the twilight zone on films and filth what else do i do talking about really good movies really bad movies at films and filth this one being maybe too milquetoast for that podcast does have a 7.3 on an internet movie database so we are the unpopular opinion of not being into this one i

01:17:34 - 01:17:49 | Speaker 1:

guess again man like i i was into it i liked it but it just it's so forgettable and not memorable and it's missing all the stereotypes and trauma that i've come to expect from a disney movie And here's the last thought I'll ever have about Ryan the Last Dragon.
