This documentary review explores Robinson Devor's controversial film "Zoo," which investigates the 2005 death of Boeing engineer Kenneth Pinyan after an "intimate" encounter with a horse. The film presents a surprisingly sympathetic look at a zoophilia community while raising uncomfortable questions about consent, media coverage, and the legal system's response to unprecedented situations.

We're back for the last installment of Pride Month. this one was called Zoo a 2007 film directed by Robinson DeVore and narrated by pretty much people and friends involved in the situation this is a very very interesting one this will not be for everybody it's not a film that you can just get through just reading the premise of it basically a man dies from having some sexual interests with a horse

00:02:47 - 00:02:54 | Speaker 4:

you didn't really round that one out I can see you trying to dance around but like you just went right for it

00:02:54 - 00:02:58 | Speaker 2:

I figured might as well because I was trying to find a nice way to say it but I'm like

00:02:58 - 00:03:02 | Speaker 4:

his stomach was perforated by a horse and he died

00:03:02 - 00:03:06 | Speaker 2:

kind of give you a foreshadowing what happened

00:03:06 - 00:03:28 | Speaker 4:

and also I feel like a strong disclaimer here you said this is part of the pride month videos I think that when we were looking at the pride month documentaries this one came up in the suggestions i wouldn't say this is pride month i don't know if the zoophilia gets included in pride month so like maybe we just keep them separate but that's yeah whatever

00:03:28 - 00:05:25 | Speaker 2:

plotting the course zoo investigates the aftermath of a 2005 incidence in Ooclaw, Washington, where Kenneth Pena, a Boeing engineer, died after internal injuries sustained during sexual performance with a horse, right? So that's where it starts off at. And then it's kind of interesting. This film is a little bit different. It's kind of really, there's a few segments of where they're showing people for the first half of it. It's just stock footage and voiceovers, right? The interviews are just vocal. You're seeing almost reenactments of some of the stuff It has a little bit of America's Most Wanted reenactment With some B-roll film Kind of a little clash of the both And they're going through the first half Of kind of making you feel for this guy Kenneth, they're like, you know We're just all hanging out, man We're all friends, we're a small community In this small community, there's not a lot to do right and and when they get into some of their activities they're talking about yeah you know guys bring over some meat some burgers make some food make some margaritas you know what i mean and and and we just have fun together and we all really really appreciate horses right they're, they're these majestic creatures. They, they, they show you love right there. They paint this picture of how almost these horses are support, uh, support animals for them. Like they're like, you know, I was going through a lot. I could tell this horse anything I can hug it. I can, you know, go up to when I'm having a bad day. And they're like, to me, the first half is just painting this picture of how important these horses are to them and their emotional support

00:05:25 - 00:05:42 | Speaker 1:

they give them and they all have nicknames right they all have like weird little nicknames and the the guy that ends up dying his nickname is mr hands i just thought that that was isn't like a south park thing wasn't that mr garrison's a little puppet was mr hands that yeah that was

00:05:42 - 00:06:09 | Speaker 2:

an interesting little tidbit like and to me if you're making these nicknames up and you're kind of know you're doing something that maybe is risque right is is taboo is something that maybe not everybody would kind of understand and that's where they're trying to it's like they're trying to give you some understanding of some context like dude it's not like what you it's not what you think right you know what i mean it's not what it seems no it was not what i thought it

00:06:09 - 00:07:51 | Speaker 1:

is definitely not what you think and so like when it starts out they are it's very sympathetic to this community i'll say a small group of friends but they're talking about living in the middle of nowhere pacific northwest coal miner town and that um one of these guys first got the internet in like 2002 or something and it opened up this whole new world for him and he's talking and they all call themselves zoo as in zoophilia so like like uh when did you go zoo and he's like well you know before i even knew about going zoo i just thought i would have this traditional family you know tip like um father mother um nuclear family have some kids like very traditional and then he's talking about like yeah all zoos are different man you can ask three zoos and you get three different definitions and this is where all the funny little nicknames come from because they're their online handles so they start meeting up in these i think it's like aol chat room they start meeting each other in aol chat rooms and they eventually like form a community of these zoos and then they start escalating to meeting up in real life one of them has a farm i guess so they would all do these like meetups where they'd all go to a farm and the farm had horses on it and i guess the premise is you know just a bunch of guys grilling burgers and having margaritas and just doing guys stuff but then at night they would all like lay down on couches and sleeping bags or whatever and they claim that the horse would come in the middle of the night and like select one of them it would like nuzzle one of them and then lead them off into the stable

00:07:51 - 00:07:56 | Speaker 2:

and then have its way with them yeah like it seduced them right it's like there's nothing i

00:07:56 - 00:08:03 | Speaker 1:

could do bro like i was just sleeping and it just like the worst uh harry potter hat hat selection

00:08:03 - 00:08:16 | Speaker 2:

ceremony ever yeah it's like it shows me and then they're like actually i was raped right like it wasn't i didn't do that to the horse the horse did it to me like you know i i consented but i had to

00:08:16 - 00:09:29 | Speaker 1:

i had no choice we didn't land on plymouth rock and honestly that that is that is the craziest claim of this entire documentary and they start harping on it they start showing all the media pundits after this the death comes out and like it becomes a national news story but the common theme is like how could this happen without animal consent like what happened here because when you think about this topic this like zoophilia topic you're thinking about humans doing things to animals right on this one it's the opposite like the animal did a thing to a human and the human died over it but the thing that happened to them again like i don't want to have to spell it out for you but the dude got a hole in his stomach because of what happened from this horse like that's not the horse being forced to perforate your stomach right like the horse did that on its own accord so it brings up this deeper complex question of like does that count as consent if the if the horse mounts you how is that not consent yeah and that's like a argument i never thought

00:09:29 - 00:09:59 | Speaker 2:

someone would bring up right that's not what i was expecting i'm like hear me out hear me out and it's almost like they're they're trying to have sympathy for their situation like they're like you gotta understand it's like a mutual thing like i love the horse the horse loves me like that's almost like the feel they give of these because these guys are really into these horses the only thing that they said was they were like you know as long as you're old enough to drink you're all welcome right as long as you're into the zoo you're in the zoo and you're old enough to drink.

00:10:00 - 00:10:43 | Speaker 4:

Come on over, bro. Like, but when he says that, I did not feel like age really mattered much, right? Like if you were 15, they'd be like, yeah, come on over, bro. Like, I think they have a wide spectrum and this is for sure something I can understand. Like, I'm not like trying to be like, oh yeah, I get where they're coming from. I'm like, this is a foreign thing. I didn't even know what zoophilia was before this. Like, I thought it was all called bestiality. That's the only thing I knew of. And then I'm like, oh, the zoophilia. they're like yeah you a zoo like and they're talking like this is a a normal thing right in their community they're like yeah no worries bro like we're all zoo you're zoo i'm zoo zoo who like we all have you know everybody's a little bit attracted to animals and you're like what

00:10:43 - 00:11:46 | Speaker 1:

i think it's a little bit of both because the way the way that they phrase it and i don't know the different delineation between being a zoo philia and bestiality but like zoo philia is philia meaning love and zoo animal so it's just the love of animals and i guess when you take that love too far then it gets into the bestiality but when you talk about that concept again usually the premise is like a person doing something to an animal not the other way around so it's like this this weird i'm not i'm not here to to like dissect the different delineations and make a judgment call here i'm just gonna say it's all bad and uh the guy died from doing this so it's clearly bad uh and and it gets a little bit worse right so the documentary for the most part is very sympathetic to this group of people like it is not judgmental or condescending or condemning in any way it's if anything it's objective on the side of being sympathetic

00:11:46 - 00:12:10 | Speaker 6:

But then they talk about after the guy dies, the courts come in and the courts are like, oh, no, like we need to get these horses off of this farm. This cannot be happening. So they basically court order the horses to be removed. And the lady that they hire, the animal rescue lady, they interview her and she's like, has no idea what's going on. she knows these horses have to be removed i don't think she even knows like why they're being removed at this point because it's still going through the courts that just that has to be removed she goes there and she says when she meets up with one of the guys this is on her own interview she just puts forth she's like he kind of looked like a child molester type just a really weird guy like she's just putting forth all of this the stats on him and then she meant this is crazy she mentions that after they pull the horse out of the stable and they're trying to load them up onto like the carriage to get him off the farm that a little mini horse comes out of nowhere and it runs up to the big horse and it starts giving the big horse a blowjob and she's like this is I've never seen anything like this in my entire life and when she said that it was like there was more going on in this farm than these guys just admitted to in the first hour of this documentary

00:14:33 - 00:15:00 | Speaker 4:

yeah that to me was the bright spot I'm like what the hell bro like come on man this little pony my little pony runs up and she's like yeah just runs up and gives this bigger horse a blowjob like it's like it was taught that bro like it was like it's seeing this reaction from probably the humans how they interacted with them and then this other guy either taking the two horses and he's like that one's mine and she's like oh i have to take this

00:15:00 - 00:15:29 | Speaker 1:

This is part of what I have to do And you need to show me a bill of sale Or I can't, I have to take both of them And he finally does, but the way that he interacts Because even when she describes the dude She's like, he kind of looked like a pedophile She says that, right off the jump Describes him as this weird guy And then she's like He's trying to harass me for this horse As I'm trying to figure out what's going on with this horse This little pony runs up And starts blowing the, she's like I need to get out of here This is the worst work I've ever been in

00:15:30 - 00:16:14 | Speaker 2:

that that was wild and ultimately it doesn't go very well for the horse right the horse ends up getting castrated because they are so concerned that one of the the random horse zoo guys on the internet is going to track this horse down and adopt it or take it so she's like the only way we can prevent this from happening is we have to castrate the horse so that it no longer has this trait that all of these guys online and it is all guys by the way i don't think there was a single uh woman in their entire club it's it's a all guys club um so they have to castrate the horse the horse didn't really do anything wrong man the horse and the horse ends up aside from the guy that dies from the perforated stomach but the horse kind of gets like the raw end of this

00:16:14 - 00:16:32 | Speaker 1:

deal and as this film progresses they kind of really go into the end of how he was died like like he had stomach pains for a while uh kenneth and he was probably bleeding internally right like

00:16:32 - 00:16:45 | Speaker 2:

he showed symptoms yeah he he got like internal bleeding that night and just didn't think it was an issue and then by the time you realize it was an issue it was too late and and as they drop him

00:16:45 - 00:19:44 | Speaker 1:

off he goes and dropped off of the hospital it's investigated all the fbi stuff the law went once they try to like take the horses and stuff but they're kind of like what do we do here like the the laws are outdated this is not something that you come across they're like i don't know what we do here so the guys but it does feel like they were doing something wrong because there's a scene where they reenact it and the guy's like yeah we have all this rope and duct tape and everything he's like running out of the house trying to hide it so they must have felt they were doing something illegal right you're not you're not like yeah this is normal bro this is what I do when you're trying to hide little evidence that might make you look a certain way and I will say that I remember this time like one of my friends he's like we all have these friends that are like really raunchy right especially when the internet first came out I don't remember if I'm sure you know like people I remember going to one of my friend's house in high school and he's like check out this video I'm like bro like and it was up this alley we'll say and it for me it was like one of the worst experiences of my life I'm like why are you like and I'm talking you're talking about me seeing a couple seconds right not even like i'm just like and these guys are living that that's their dream so it kind of like put in a different context for me i think they knew they were doing wrong but it was that taboo of like oh i'm gonna get caught because once they drop him off and he passes away as they like kind of show him as a victim as like poor him he didn't and some people thought it was like almost like a suicide right that he was trying to maybe off himself in a certain way which is a weird way to like off yourself i can think of easier ways yeah that's not the way i i would tell someone to suggest if you uh not that we suggest that or anything they they really started going down this hole of like what is zoophilia and then this is when i started under like why are people acting this way and then they go to the media and they're like the media just didn't understand right they were they were making the story something it wasn't and i was like what do you mean like they're making us seem like a bunch of weirdos i'm not trying to defend the media it's not my favorite thing to do and it's actually one of my things i'm against and in this case i'm like how else do you characterize this like they were like they just didn't get it bro they're they were taking it out of context and i'm like what was the context and i could tell that these guys uh in the film they really believed that what they were doing was not a big deal they did not feel it was a crime they did not feel it was inappropriate or out of place it was just they're being who they were being and i think that's what they were trying to like come across with this film because they didn't like analyze some of the media people they showed some media clips but there's nobody from the media that you're actually here like yeah when this story came across i was like what the hell is going on and why did we cover and this is how we covered it they just show you news clips and some of them are like i think one's like even a rush limbaugh where he's kind of like talking crap and they they kind of to me frame it

00:19:44 - 00:19:54 | Speaker 1:

like dude this is just the same as love is love bro like you know what i mean that's how i feel like they try to frame it they don't necessarily say that but that's what i got from it

00:20:00 - 00:20:09 | Speaker 2:

hidden treasures and overboard moments um i'm sure there's some hidden treasure here

00:20:09 - 00:21:21 | Speaker 1:

somewhere i mean the biggest one for me is that i didn't know that there was another community out there that would welcome me so that's kind of crazy uh apparently they're they're falling off like flies because they can't stay alive too long from the activities but the the biggest hidden treasures for me really was that this one it was like shot like a real movie it was shot on film it had this vintage kind of artsy look to it i think it was damn well made like it was a very it could have been about anything it just happened to be about guys getting killed by horses but it could have been about anything and it was done incredibly well and i really think that the the sympathetic angle it's more objective than sympathetic but like that objective sympathetic angle is this interesting contrast with the content itself because when you get to the content it's hard to believe that there's a documentary even about this and like what happened and everything that they're covering but the fact that it's presented in such a objective way with like again like artistic film considerations i think it there's something that's hard to place on it

00:21:21 - 00:22:08 | Speaker 2:

that just makes it all work so well to me one of the hidden treasures that i didn't expect and it's really really a hidden treasure there's a scene where they're like going and showing like a b-roll of driving down and on the radio it's like talking about this guy's ranting and raving about the military industrial complex and commies and taking over i don't know why it just struck my chord right there i'm like wait a second like this film is about this but now i'm hearing about the military industrial complex and how it's taking over and i was like i wonder why they added this it it didn't really fit the film necessarily but it's a real real hidden treasure i'm like well i guess you got to get it get it through any way you can man even zoophilias know that the government sucks right like i guess that's a a broad easy statement for everybody

00:22:08 - 00:22:22 | Speaker 1:

to catch on to but i think the the other part of that too was the emphasis that these were blue collar coal mining like hard working farm men right they just happen to share a very specific

00:22:22 - 00:23:36 | Speaker 2:

interest with each other very specific and as far as uh overboard moments i think there's quite a bit it's it's funny too as well because it's an overboard moment you mentioned it earlier uh my big overboard moment was the little pony giving a blowout to the horse like i was like that's a little overboard but at the same time i i understand so i guess i shouldn't give it such an overboard because i understand why you put it in the film it really emphasizes what was going on there but i'm like i've never heard of that like i was like whoa like this is kind of crazy and you're like it made me chuckle a little bit and then i think that some of the other overboard moments was just the way they victimized uh some of the guys like i thought it was a little bit much where they didn't really grill them they're just like dude you know love is love like we're just trying to live our lives man don't you understand that this is part of what it is and i thought they laid it on too thick i thought they could like dissect a little bit more from the rest of the people that were involved not just the people involved but like some of the reporters some of the people around town like some people's other perspective other than the zoophilia and i've never heard of zoophilia until this film i think the the overboard moments and

00:23:36 - 00:25:49 | Speaker 1:

first of all just to be clear they don't show the mini pony doing anything it's just like they show a mini pony running but then it's just them talking about this lady what she saw when she went and picked it up so there's not like you don't see anything happen in this entire documentary but it was so revealing because that lady she's an animal rescue she works with horses her entire life she's she's like i've seen thousands of horses for her to be like i have never in my entire life seen a mini pony just run up unprompted out of nowhere just out of the corner of your eye a mini pony runs up and starts doing this thing the way that she described it was just like she thought it was weird so you know that it was weird because she's probably seen weird stuff just not to this level the the overboard for me is that the whole situation happened um the fact that it's probably still happening that it became a media frenzy for 15 minutes for sure documentary about it like just it existing i think is the overboard it's about that time sink or swim what do you got on this no i always clarify this but like a sink doesn't mean that you shouldn't watch it and a swim doesn't mean you should watch it like the criteria for me is will i ever forget this documentary will i ever look at the world the same way again uh based on all of those metrics man this is a swim for me i won't ever forget this movie i won't ever look at a horse again the same way it's not even like an investigative documentary it's not like there's a mystery that then gets solved and there's all these twists and turns it's very straightforward guys form a group guy dies doing something crazy then there's a documentary about it even though that like nothing explosive well something explosive i guess happens to one person but like even the fact that nothing huge gets revealed uh it's still it like changed my worldview like i won't be able to unsee this movie and again it could have been about anything and it was well put together it just happened to be about this so i guess this is a swim for me this film is uh

00:25:49 - 00:26:41 | Speaker 3:

something i will never forget either it's something that will make me look a little different at the world in general it taught me stuff that maybe I didn't want to learn but I did learn it like I figured it out I think it's put together all right I think it drags out a little bit for me for my taste and maybe it's just my bias on the line but I do give it a sink I don't know I didn't really the film didn't resonate with me maybe it was just the topic was too much for me and and I went in with the negative attitude but it is for sure is something you'll never forget and it is something that is not great for me but i would probably still suggest it there's a movie called a gummo that is like one of the most horrible films ever that i've ever watched but i still suggest people to watch it because it's like so bad and awful like that you're like you gotta watch this because it's so creepy and real i would probably do the same for this i give it a

00:26:41 - 00:26:57 | Speaker 1:

sink but i probably would suggest someone to watch it and if you want to hear about other shocking content that maybe you won't like, but you would suggest, check out Frazzle Drip Fun House, which is a fun comic book about the entire Frazzle Drip situation.
