Welcome to Raging Bullets, a comics fan podcast, Season 2, Episode 770.

00:00:06 - 00:00:29 | Speaker 4:

From the great outskirts of Cleveland, to wherever you may roam, Sean and Jim, thank you for listening to the Raging Bullets Podcast Show!

00:00:30 - 00:01:07 | Speaker 2:

Welcome to Raging Bullets, I'm Sean Whelan, Dr. Norge, and I'm joined as always by my co-host Jim, the sensei of the what-not, the duke of you know, the southern strategery, the minister of morgader, of course he is so electricizing, and the elder statesman of the podcast, Segulin. How's it going, eh? Jim, on this episode, we're going to talk about X-Man Hunt Part 1, which is going to cover Uncanny X-Men number 11 and NYX issue number 9. We are sponsored as always by DCBService and InStockTrades.com. Mr. Segulin, tell us about DCBService.com.

00:01:07 - 00:01:36 | Speaker 3:

Remember, it's not just a great place to get a great deal on comics. They have collectible statues, apparel. Right now I'm looking at a Batman statue, 20% off, 68 bucks. I'm looking at a bunch of Disney statues, Alice in Wonderland, Belle, Little Mermaid. I've got a pirate stitch from Leeloo and Stitch. So, you know, if you've got a hobby, they've got something for you. So thank you, DCBS.

00:01:36 - 00:02:21 | Speaker 2:

Over at InStockTrades.com, as always, they've got their deals of the week. A Condition of Love, Graphic Novel, Volume 13, 1099 regularly, 45% off, only 604. I want to thank DCBService and InStockTrades.com for continuing to support our show. Mr. Segulin, what kind of a podcast are we?

00:02:21 - 00:02:34 | Speaker 3:

Raging Bullets is a spoiler podcast. We go in-depth into plot lines, story twists, and whatnot of the comics we're discussing on today's show. So if you haven't read the books, you may want to come back later so you can better enjoy the show.

00:02:34 - 00:02:49 | Speaker 1:

DC High Volume, Batman. The Dark Knight's definitive DC comic stories. Adapted directly for audio for the very first time. Fear. I have to make them afraid.

00:02:49 - 00:02:55 | Speaker 4:

He's got a motorcycle. Get after him or I'll have you shot. You mean blow up the building.

00:02:55 - 00:03:07 | Speaker 1:

From this moment on, none of you are safe. New episodes every Wednesday, wherever you get your podcasts. It seems to run on some form of electricity.

00:03:09 - 00:04:04 | Speaker 2:

Our first discussion of this episode is going to be of Uncanny X-Men number 11. Legacy issue number 711. The writer is Gail Simone. The artist is Javier Guerin. The color artist is Matthew Wilson. Letterer is Clayton Cowles. Cover artist is David Marquez and Matthew Wilson. Variant cover artists are Luciano Vecchio, Peach Momoko, and Phil Noto. Apologies, of course, for any name butchery there because I know there was some. Before we jump into talking about this issue, Jim, what has been your experience with this X-Men relaunch? Have you stayed current as far as where are you at in this series? There's been a number of books that have been released. Since we did our initial conversation actually in our comic timing crossover, where are you at? What does the X-Men universe currently look like for you?

00:04:05 - 00:04:59 | Speaker 3:

Okay. So the X slash all of Marvel Universe. What it looks for me is what I can get on the Marvel app. Okay. That's, again, a little while ago I restricted what I'm buying. Even on the DC side, I've restricted dramatically what I'm buying. And I'm doing the DC app for most of my DC reading, the Marvel app for all of my Marvel reading. Uncanny X-Men, I did pick up like the first, I think I ordered the first 10 issues. But then even then I was like, you know what, Jim, stop. I'm trying to stop the collector mindset. I'm trying to get back to just being a reader of comic books and enjoyer of comic books and not be the guy. Oh, I've got to get this one and this one and this one. Got to collect. You know, it's like it's not Pokemon. I don't have to collect them all so I can just sit back and enjoy my reading. And that's what I'm trying to do big time.

00:05:00 - 00:05:33 | Speaker 2:

with marvel and again it's i'm kind of succeeding in it kind of not succeeding in it but i am succeeding a little bit so on the x universe you know uncanny um i'm through 10 issue 10 because that was on the thing i they you know i what i did was i went on i bought um the stuff for uh this discussion on through comiXology so i got that you know that way but i'm trying not to buy buy you know marvel books i'm just reading what comes out on the app on the app i'm just

00:05:33 - 00:08:33 | Speaker 1:

trying to read on just on the app this is where we differ it is pokemon um no it's i'm all over the place now which i never thought i would be so um there's been a resurgence of my love for paper um but really in collected editions so in my basement i actually started buying these mini bookshelves i have a back basement which has like a pool table in it and um what i've done in there is i've got like signed comics hanging on the wall i've got celebrity photos and things that i've framed up and i've got this chair that's in there that previously a gaming chair but it's kind of a lounger so i put that in an ottoman back there because i've got this space like it's an open space and i turned this into a reading area and i found that i just i'm reading paper i take my ipad down there so i'm all over the place there's some books that i'm reading digitally there's some books that i'm reading paper you know i'm getting the monthly issues just because of the collector mentality what i've found is i mean we're actually kind of similar in this sense i found that there's certain books where i like having the run of it so i want to have the run there's certain books where i started buying them digitally and i just like being current on the book because i don't want to like avoid spoilers i just want to like and i want the immediacy great example is that batman you know it's um batman i'm buying i'm just i'm out of my mind i'm buying it physically to have the physical issues but i like reading it digitally so i'm getting them day and date as they're coming out like i'm liking hush the hush sequel is out right now i'm a couple issues into it really enjoying it so far so that's the type of thing and then like you i'm there's a number of things that i'm reading via the app that because of the fact that we were mainly a dc comics podcast before i'm there's certain marvel books that i'm catching up there like i'm reading immortal thor for example right now which is outstanding i liked immortal hulk and so i'm jumping onto immortal thor which is supposed to have a major implications for the marvel universe going forward big changes coming to thor and i'm when i say big i'm not like that's not like tiny changes huge changes coming to thor so i'm reading it that way uncanny x-men i'm buying paper and digital i'm a gail simone junkie i've remained a gail simone junkie um same thing with the main x-men book then some of the other books i'm buying them digital i'm up until manhunt because of the fact that we were doing i knew we were going to do this on the show i've been current with the x books i'm on a bit of a pause because i don't want to as we're talking about this story do what i inevitably do when i've read too far and i'm like and i know what's going to come next and you drop that in there just it infuriates me when i do it so i can't imagine what it's like for a listener so i try when we're doing stories like this where we're not going back to something classic but we're touching on

00:08:33 - 00:09:13 | Speaker 1:

something current to try not to be too far ahead of our listening audience so if you're listening to this and joining us along the way you can read with us and know that we're going to talk about and spoil the heck out of the first three issues of this and so if you're doing a read along we're not going to tease anything that goes beyond that i'm really trying hard to avoid that piece yeah so that's kind of where i'm at like this so the x books are you like in the app are you reading all of the current x books is there anything you're leaving out like what's your experience been because i'm i'm really loving the whole gambit right now i'm here's the thing i'm going through the full

00:09:13 - 00:09:33 | Speaker 2:

gambit i'm reading all the x books and it was funny when we first started talking manhunt i somehow missed storm really you know how like with the uh with the marvel app you select you know how you select it and you put it in your favorites so you just click on your library and

00:09:33 - 00:09:38 | Speaker 1:

you miss the you mean you miss the title altogether the title altogether that book is sweet

00:09:38 - 00:10:24 | Speaker 2:

so that was you know so when i first read um issue six for manhunt i hadn't read anything before it okay so issue six was my introduction to the storm series you know oh that's cool i was like yeah so it was kind of neat and i was like so you did go back and read all the rest of it right oh yeah I went back and I pulled everything that was in, and I'm pretty sure it was through issue five. So I'm pretty sure I'm current. But yeah, so I did read all of the went back. But it was funny, my first read through of it, I was reading it going, it was a little bit of a wait. Hold on. Are you reading Avengers? No. Well, I have it in my queue, but I haven't had a chance to sit down and read it yet.

00:10:24 - 00:10:25 | Speaker 1:

You know, she's on the Avengers.

00:10:25 - 00:11:00 | Speaker 2:

Yes, I know she's on the Avenger. You know, right now it's on my list of books to read, you know, the Avengers, but I'm behind on the Avengers. You know, it's one of those things like I'm trying to have the Marvel day, the DC day. Me too. Non-big two day where I read something that's not Marvel or DC. I don't always get to it and like you'll read one or two books and you can't continue on. It's just like, you know, it's I don't have enough time in the day to actually enjoy the hobby as much as I used to.

00:11:00 - 00:13:02 | Speaker 1:

So this is where we're actually completely alike. My collecting is like Pokemon in the sense that there's certain things that I'm really enjoying getting collected editions. I got those DC's finest. Yeah. And Marvel has its own little versions of those. I didn't think I'd like them at first because of the size. You know, they're smaller books like they're not digest size, but they're smaller than the traditional ones. And you know me, I usually like bigger is better, but these are really nice reading copies. So I'm digging that. So I grabbed a couple of them. I don't have all of them. It's I haven't gone crazy yet with them, but I'm really enjoying the line because some of them are things that I haven't read before. And some of them are favorites. I'm still liking the omnibuses and I'm liking the absolutes. What I'm finding now is this crazy thing where I don't feel like I need to have everything. I'm grabbing each month based on interest. And I my collecting where collecting comes in is if I start down one of like a particular brand of that line, I want to keep getting them. You know, so if it's a Batman one or something like that, I want to get those X-Men one, Spider-Man, things like that. Daredevil, like Frank Miller's Daredevil. I've been collecting those in collected editions because I don't have the I have the one collected edition of Daredevil. I had I have lots of floppies, the singles, but the one collected edition I have of Daredevil is the one that really kicked it off for me. Born again. Back in 87, born again, think about 87. When we were in high school, trade editions were not a common thing. So born again, I got in trade. That was how I read that. Like I had read Daredevil before that, but it was very broken. It was either in Marvel team up when he guest appeared in Spider-Man or if I got like issue Daredevil in the three packs or I got like Daredevil issues at like a flea market or something like that. Always liked the character, but, you know, didn't have like big runs of Daredevil. Then born again changed my world. You've read born again, right?

00:13:02 - 00:13:02 | Unknown:

Yeah.

00:13:03 - 00:13:03 | Speaker 1:

Oh, yeah.

00:13:03 - 00:13:10 | Speaker 2:

Yeah. Well, and again, but here's a funny thing with me reading born again. It wasn't until the Marvel app came out.

00:13:10 - 00:13:12 | Speaker 1:

You just read born again?

00:13:13 - 00:13:25 | Speaker 2:

Yes. Oh, my God. Talking about how amazing that Daredevil run is. Yes. All those years. And I never picked it up. And then when the Marvel app, like, hey, let me find out. Let me read this. I'm like, oh, crap. This is awesome.

00:13:26 - 00:13:32 | Speaker 1:

So you never read any like the electric stuff or anything? Have you read that now? No, I haven't yet. Oh, we got stuff to do.

00:13:33 - 00:13:35 | Speaker 2:

We got so much stuff to do we can talk about.

00:13:35 - 00:14:27 | Speaker 1:

Yeah. I just did a really good episode on Back to the Bins that's going to be released in the future where we were joined by Chris from over at Comic Timing and Comic Geek Speak and Comic Timing. And Chris Ebert Lee and Paul over on Back to the Bins. And we just did kind of a retrospective of Frank Miller's run. But we didn't do a cover to cover, which means as far as I'm concerned, it would have been a fair game anyway because you and I haven't done it. But what I don't want to do is point people to like another appearance over there. And then because we've got so much to do. It's like, well, that would have checked a box. It didn't. And great conversation. And you should go and listen to it. But then it leaves us open to then, hey, listen to that. And then Jim and I are eventually going to do a cover to cover. I want to do Born Again. Oh, definitely. I really want to do Born Again.

00:14:28 - 00:14:53 | Speaker 2:

Yes, me too. I completely agree. That's on that list of books that we're going to talk about. It's a must. It's a must. It's a must do. Yeah. And it's funny because you're talking about just, you know, what you're, again, you're collecting and not, you know, I'm still getting some floppies. I'm still getting Action Comics, Superman, Batman, Detective and Wonder Woman. Okay. Those are the five titles that I get floppies of.

00:14:53 - 00:14:55 | Speaker 1:

Because that collection is important.

00:14:55 - 00:14:59 | Speaker 2:

Yeah. Yeah. So I'm still, I'm still got a bit of a collector mind.

00:14:59 - 00:15:00 | Unknown:

Yeah.

00:15:00 - 00:15:45 | Speaker 2:

mindset but i'm letting go of the other stuff and i'm actually even trying to find the free time to organize my comics to set them up and maybe someday sell them because i want to get rid of i want to start getting rid of floppies i want to start selling my comics and just because you know spacing and just i know one day i'm going to die and i don't want to leave that on to somebody to get rid of so i'm like now looking at all the books that i have that i'm like i don't need all these things i can thin the hurt you know i i'm a borderline hoarder when it comes to stuff so i'm i don't want to be that difficult person you know 20 years down the line 30 years down the line however

00:15:45 - 00:16:18 | Speaker 1:

long i'm here wait here's where i'm gonna i've got to course correct you this is me as a friend because i adore you you basically just said i like i paired back my collection over the years for a variety of reasons sometimes i sold things to buy things um other times i've sold things because i've moved or things like that is for those reasons now it's kind of like any pairing back i do it's because i've got duplicates and i kind of want to just accessibility you know like being able to you know know where everything's at to grab it and stuff like that um is part of the reasons for doing it you are doing it

00:16:18 - 00:18:34 | Speaker 2:

because you're planning for when you die no part of it is also just the you know spacing and i've got a bunch of stuff that i haven't read in many many years and i'll be honest i don't even completely know what i have you know it's funny like you know as i've been going through reading some of these really old series through you know the app you know i'm going i read that okay i bet you i own that and it's you know it's stuff like that is starting to get to me that i'm like i'm especially like you know with x you know when uh x factor you know we were talking about it i went back and i reread the relaunch of it with gene gray coming back and all that then as i'm reading those issues i'm like i know i read this i remember seeing this issue yeah i'm like and i bet you i have it sitting in my uh the one room where i've got all my uh drawer boxes and i don't know that i have it so part of me want i need to organize my books just so i know what i have and then once i've organized my books that's when i'm going to decide what i'm going to get rid of but also part of it is again i've watched a lot of those hoarder shows so part of it is the influence of those hoarder shows i don't want to be a hoarder but i know my mindset i know my personality i've got the addictive personality in that i can gather and i've got a bunch of piles here i got a pile there i've got all this clutter in my house that actually honestly embarrasses me how disorganized my house is right now but you know so i gotta start focusing on stuff i gotta pick i gotta pick a room clear it clean it get it organized again go on to the next room but when i get started getting you know into my comics that's when things are going to get crazy because i've got probably you know maybe 30 drawer boxes okay that i have no idea what's in them none whatsoever zero clue what's in them so i'm gonna have to open up the boxes lay them out see what is what what titles i have you know i'm pretty sure everything's bagged and boarded but again i can't even tell you that everything's bagged and boarded i may have loose comics is sitting in those drawer boxes i don't know it's you know do you use any kind

00:18:34 - 00:19:50 | Speaker 1:

of like what i did i use clz comics there's there's a lot of great comic book programs out there but what i like about it is it's simple very cost effective for the year i mean it's like nothing it's you buy it on the app store it has a desktop app as well as the phone app and it syncs yeah which is really nice it does qr codes and um you can scan the comics which is really nice so you know what you have here's my worry what i went into it's one of the reasons why i've started to grow to like omnibuses and deluxe editions and things like that there's certain story i'm deathly afraid of digital's here and it's not going anywhere i'm deathly afraid of digital ownership like what does that actually mean i'm strangely i think maybe you set me on this i think one of our episodes like we've completely flipped right it's like you're kind of like i don't care let's get rid of everything whereas before you were the one that was saying i'm afraid because i don't actually you know what happens when the digital disappears and stuff like that so that worked on me and uh i hate you because now you're like i just it doesn't matter you know and again it's it's one of those

00:19:50 - 00:19:56 | Speaker 2:

things where i completely see what you're saying and i 100 remember no wait hold on you're seeing what

00:19:56 - 00:19:57 | Speaker 1:

you said

00:20:00 - 00:20:36 | Speaker 2:

I didn't say this. You're right. I have kind of flipped the script on this in that I'm not sitting there going, I've got to have this. Now, I'm embracing more of this digital age and this digital meme. But in the back of my head, I do have that fear. So in my back of my head, I am thinking that if I do start getting rid of the comics, I keep saying I'm going to. But you notice I did say if I do get rid of it. You notice that. And if I do get rid of them, I'm probably going to get a backup of Collected. So as I buy the Collected.

00:20:36 - 00:20:37 | Speaker 1:

See, I really like that.

00:20:37 - 00:21:29 | Speaker 2:

Then I will get rid of the floppy version. OK. Or I'll look in like if I have, you know, there's certain books that if I end up having, if I end up owning it, I'm probably not going to sell the thing because I'm going to want to hold on to it just for, you know, holding on. Like I know I've got multiple versions of Gail Simone's Uncanny X-Men number one.

00:21:29 - 00:22:45 | Speaker 1:

The floppies of the other books, because this is what I do in my collection with those. Yeah. So I'm collecting Uncanny X-Men physically. I've been buying the other books digitally because what ends up happening is this. I start something on the app. Then this crazy thing happens where they don't have the current issue. So then I'm like, but then this is the reader mentality in me. So it sounds like the collector mentality is somewhat that. But I'm a reader first and I will always have been. I want to read it now. Yes. That's where the Pokemon thing comes in. So it's got to read them all. And I have no, I have no patience. And this is where I have no self-control. If I'm digging the story and I know I can read it now. Here's where the comic creators have got to be scared. If there was some way for me to like sit outside their house and get like the issue before everybody else, I probably would. I wouldn't like break, I wouldn't do anything illegal or anything. I would like just maybe sit on their front lawn with a lawn chair, like and agree to do some yard work or something. Like whatever it would take. Like, listen, I'm not trying to be creepy or anything here. I'll cut your lawn and leave. Can I just read that issue?

00:22:47 - 00:22:48 | Speaker 2:

Stalking is illegal, Sean.

00:22:48 - 00:23:35 | Speaker 1:

Well, that's not stalking if I'm willing to do chores. It's bartering. I look at it. You say stalking, I say bartering. Case in point. Well, here's the thing. Could you hear a point earlier about you haven't gotten rid of your comics yet? I haven't done this yet. Right. I don't like have, I don't have like addresses of creators or anything. I haven't like done any of that. So this, in my head, it sounds like, it sounds like a good idea. But I've taken no initiative to do any of it. There's a lot of work involved in that. And I'm reading comics. So in fairness, as long as they keep giving me stimulus in these books, I won't ever be able to get to do any of that. Because I'm not going to like go, geez, I got to seek out all their addresses in order to do all this. Because I've got too many comics to read. Yeah.

00:23:35 - 00:23:44 | Speaker 2:

So they're safe. You don't have, they really are safe. You don't have a collection of cease and desist orders. I don't. Okay. Okay. Just making sure. Yeah. Nope. Nothing like that. No.

00:23:45 - 00:23:45 | Speaker 1:

Anyway.

00:23:45 - 00:23:46 | Speaker 2:

Yet.

00:23:46 - 00:25:29 | Speaker 1:

Let's, yet. That's right. Let's take a look at this cover. Because it's one of the things I've always loved over the years. Charles Xavier is a heck of a visual when they do him right. I love this centerpiece of Charles's powers and the reaction of the team. And this is quite a team to see the reaction of. What I like about this is we've been reading Uncanny X-Men and it's got its set of players, right? This is a sampling of the X-Family right now on that front cover. It's a very dynamic cover. This book has enjoyed both in its main cover and the alternate covers that have come out. Some really great talent putting together some amazing covers. I went to the Fan Expo Cleveland and they had like Fan Expo exclusive covers. And here's what they do. They do the foil variant when possible. They do the virgin cover, which is, I guess, and I am not like a cover terminology maven. So just kind of ignore, like if I'm using terms wrong, people out there don't like throw your phone down and stuff like that and disgust. I will tell you, I just know it's a variant cover without the logo. I will tell you, I will tell you, I will tell you.

00:25:00 - 00:26:23 | Speaker 2:

And so they have the logo version that's exclusive and the one without the logo. And I'm never sure which I want because I like the snazzy cover, but then I'm like, do I want the logo? Do I not want the logo? But I picked up a couple of Fan Expo variants over there. And those I actually framed and put on the wall because I really liked the art, which I'm finding, you know, if down the road I get a chance to get them signed, I'll pull them down and do that. This book is a very, very pretty book. So then you flip the page, the Shi'ar Empire is something that I have loved since the early 80s, whenever it was that I first experienced the relationship of Charles and the Landra. It's seeing that ship just made me happy. I loved the dynamic nature of it. I know it wasn't her per se, but it was her people. And this was like a welcome addition to the X-Men. This is stunning. It's really like it takes a lot for me now because I've seen so many great renditions of ships and things like that. It takes a lot for me to go, wow. Instead of saying like it's, wow, another cool spaceship. It was like, wow, this is a cool spaceship. And it was that dynamically different. The coloring. I just think the choice of the layout and everything in the background. It just, I wanted to board that ship and take a look around. You know, like I do on like Star Trek shows and things like that when I see them. I'm like, oh, I kind of want to move around on that thing and see what that looks like.

00:26:24 - 00:27:52 | Speaker 1:

That's a good comparison with the Star Trek shows. And again, this is a flat image, but there's still a great way to give it life and give it energy. You know, and you get some really cool pop of colors in the backdrop of it. You know, it's a heavy gray and blue tint, which kind of is a, would be, you would think would be more of a duller color. But they gave it a nice little electric, electricizing it or electrical, yeah, energy of it, you know. And then offsetting the red, it really makes it stand out. And again, like you said, there's always the nostalgia as soon as you see it, you know. And I'm like, oh, cool. Then you flip the page and you, again, you see the people that you're kind of familiar with. Well, at least I'm kind of, you're more knowledgeable than I am. But it was just a really neat, just, again, a cool exploration. But I love how we jump right into the action. We jump right into this mutiny, you know, revolution, whatever you want to call it. And I was sitting there going, what the heck's going on here? And I love the fact that it starts off with this mystery. Because all I know is this is this great manhunt, you know, for Xavier. I knew that going into this. That was the only thing I knew. So starting off in space, starting off with, you know, the Shi'ar Empire, that for me was a great jump on, great, I know I mispronounced it. No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.

00:27:53 - 00:28:41 | Speaker 2:

I'm not correcting you at all. I'm actually, I'm just nodding along and agreeing with you. The only thing, if there's anything I was going to giggle about is electricizing. But we'll do that. We'll take care of that later. Because I'm like, I don't know what that is. Is it something I should get up and do right now? It feels like some aerobics thing or whatever. But no, no, it wasn't. I'm actually nodding along. The piece where I'm like sitting here and chomping at the bit to say something. Dude, cool Deathbird. Cool Deathbird sequences. I love Deathbird. And it's like to see her in a role where you're like, usually it's the X-Men fighting Deathbird has been my experience growing up. It's not that right now. It's us rooting for Deathbird to kick some butt against overwhelming odds. Deathbird was so cool in this. I really loved the opening with Deathbird. Gail Simone is clearly a fan.

00:28:43 - 00:28:43 | Unknown:

Yes.

00:28:43 - 00:28:55 | Speaker 2:

And it's something throughout the years. It's like, why is this woman my favorite author? She does stuff like this. She's like, who would you pop in there? It's not going to be a red shirt number A. No, it's Deathbird.

00:28:57 - 00:29:52 | Speaker 1:

And like you, I was sitting there going, oh, this is going to be awesome. Yes. She's about to open up a can of whoop ass. Because not only is Deathbird just a, you know, again, description is Shi'ar mutant unparalleled warrior. That's just the basic description given to her. But we know she's so much beyond that. She goes one on five, one on seven against the X-Men and wins. You know, so she's, you know, I feel bad for these people who are about to die horrific deaths. Because not only is she a badass, she's defending her niece. So she's protecting family. Yeah. So that takes it to an 11. And I'm like, yes, I know that full page spread of her standing there. Brilliant artwork just showing her as a true vicious, you know, badass. One, two, three, four, five dead bodies. I had her feet and she's ready for more. And I'm like, oh, yeah.

00:29:53 - 00:32:15 | Speaker 2:

All of this. And this is Graymalkin prison. Like, why is this the kickoff? Because Charles is experiencing all this. And this is Graymalkin prison. Keep in mind, they've got him on like this dampening helmet and all that kind of stuff like that. But this is, again, Charles Xavier. That's never going to be enough. He's experiencing all this. In the meantime, we know he's got this tumor, this mutant tumor, that is causing all kinds of issues. So I'm like, this is Professor X again, and it's our Professor X. And especially now that we know so much in reading the X books, knowing the story behind this, that Charles is not the bad guy that it's looked like. And depending on who knows what really happened with Charles and why he did what he did. This is really, really cool to see him in this sequence, knowing that it's dangerous for this man to be out, but yet you're sympathetic to him. That balance that's been achieved here is really critical for this story. Because I'm riding along and I'm like, this is his kid. It's one of those things where he's a dad who feels like he has not been there for his kid. He is hoping and rooting for Deathbird. And that just added to an already cool sequence with Deathbird. We are now running along with Charles, who's rooting for Deathbird, as we're rooting for Deathbird. It is like the coolest balance. The pacing of this fight is so sweet in what it does. Because it's telling a big story in the best way of introducing all of this. If you're going to build and lead into a crossover, this is so the way to do it. Because our man has not escaped yet. And yet I am so glued into his motivation. This is sometimes what's forgotten. Make us as readers want the motivation for the character to escape and do something. To the point where you know how dangerous he is. You know why he should not. But yet you're like, deal's off. He's got to get out of there. He's got to get out of there. And I loved how this was paced at the beginning. Because I totally felt that. And it was the emotional drive of this opening sequence. That it had me pulling along like the fish on a hook. I was, they got me. There's a carrot and I'm pulling a cart. It's like, it was so awesome.

00:32:16 - 00:33:11 | Speaker 1:

And one of the things I loved. Again, everything you're saying, I'm completely in agreement on that. But one of the things I really loved is how they, you know, they crafted a story where they're going through each of the different parts. We've got the prison. Then they got the close-up of Charles. Then we're going back to space. Then the prison, Charles. And they just, you know, flip-flopping between the different stuff. And just kind of like, it's a beautiful blend of multiple elements of this story having to come together. You know, you have your opening page where we focus on one. And now we've got to start showing all of this stuff interacting. So for me, this was just a great, just the flow through of the page going from, you know, space to prison, Charles. Space, prison, Charles. You know, and just keep going back and forth. But you never lose any one piece of the story. And you never get confused on any one part of the story. You see them all spread out at the same time. It's brilliant.

00:33:11 - 00:34:04 | Speaker 2:

The writing of Dr. Ellis was brilliant. And everything that's going on with that team as well. Because you've really got three different flows going on here. That it's essential that they're all interplaying with each other. You could have written them separately. Total mistake. Doing it this way where we're, they're teasing us in and bringing us along. You know, she's talking about, it's like his brain, you know, I mean, the team's talking about how it's like his brain's overheating. And you just know that we're building to something. We are building to something. It's, I'm like waiting for the egg to hatch. This is going on. And that was the part that's, even now as I'm talking about it, I feel like I'm just reading it for the first time again. And that's the sign of a really good sequence where you've got that throughout. Charles, I'm a good, I was a good man. I was, you know, as he's playing this out in his mind. That part is just like, just really, really was something that drew me in.

00:34:04 - 00:34:39 | Speaker 1:

I love that one sequence when he's like, I was a good man, but I was in all ways not a good father. And I love the fact that arguments can be made about was he a good father? Was he not a good father? But the power of in his own mind that he was not a good father. That gives him even, that takes up his desire to help his daughter even more. You know, whether he was a good father or not. That's not for me to say, to be honest with you, because I don't know all the story. I really don't know all the story of him as a dad. But here's the thing. I love that. He's a terrible dad.

00:34:42 - 00:34:56 | Speaker 2:

I love him, but he's a terrible dad. I'm helping you. And I'm saying, you're saying based on your reading experience. I'm telling, I've read enough about him. His son, Legion. Remember Legion, right?

00:34:56 - 00:34:59 | Speaker 1:

I remember Legion. So you read all that stuff. You didn't do a good job there.

00:34:59 - 00:35:12 | Speaker 2:

Here's the thing. If you were to ask me right now, is Charles dad of the year? Take a look at the Legion arc. You read all of that. Like, I mean, you said you're like, there might be an argument for the other side. What is that argument exactly?

00:35:13 - 00:35:21 | Speaker 1:

Okay, his argument for his father with his daughter. To be honest, I've never read any stories with him and his daughter. That's why he's a terrible dad.

00:35:23 - 00:35:32 | Speaker 2:

There should be a miniseries. There should be a miniseries about, you know, Charles and daughter. You know, Charlie and that type of thing. There's not.

00:35:34 - 00:36:34 | Speaker 1:

I thought maybe I missed something. And I was going to talk to you about, you know, what kind of stories are we... Because is this the first of introduction of her? No. Okay. See, I didn't even know he had a daughter, to be honest with you. I don't think there was an introduction. You know, so that's the thing where I was like, I don't know. You know, I can't truly, as I said, I can't truly say if he was a bad father to his daughter. But I do love the fact that he's got this, you know, again. It adds to the emotion. It adds to just his motivation as to why he needs to get out. He's got to help his daughter. He was not a good father. He needs to do something right by her. I love seeing those kind of stories and those kind of, like, you know, humanizations of people and of characters where they have that recognition of, hey, I'm a piece of garbage. But I'm going to do one thing right. And that's a great motivation for the incredible amount of death and destruction and betrayal we are about to see.

00:36:34 - 00:37:14 | Speaker 2:

She was introduced in Mr. and Mrs. X No. 1 in July of 2018. Following the deaths of Professor X and Lalandra, their genetic materials were used to genetically create a child. So in fairness to Charles, there are some unique natures to this story that would say, maybe he shouldn't. I guess I'm going to go back and say, you were saying, what is the argument? Maybe it's the fact that she did literally hatch from an egg. Might be the argument. But he's been back on the scene and, like, clearly hasn't been dad of the year with that either. But she's been around. I guess I'm more critical of him because of Legion than I am her.

00:37:15 - 00:37:15 | Unknown:

Yeah.

00:37:15 - 00:37:19 | Speaker 1:

So Legion is a good argument as to why he is not father of the year.

00:37:20 - 00:37:36 | Speaker 2:

But I think that might also be leading to his guilt and his urgency to protect his daughter now. Especially with Lalandra and the relationship. Did you read a lot of Lalandra and Charles together? No. Because you and I, do you remember it as in Uncanny X-Men as a kid? You remember Lalandra, right?

00:37:36 - 00:37:48 | Speaker 1:

Okay. I remember her as a kid. I'm going to keep butchering the name, so I'm going to stop saying it. Her. Yes. But I'll be honest. I don't remember the stories.

00:37:49 - 00:37:49 | Speaker 2:

Okay.

00:37:49 - 00:38:34 | Speaker 1:

You know, I remember reading it. I remember seeing her. I remember seeing the Empire. I remember seeing all of them. But I don't have any solid memories on the stories. It's kind of like when we were talking to Dark Phoenix. I didn't completely remember all that part of their part that they played in the story. There are gaps in my memory. So, you know, there's definitely gaps. You know, and that's one of the reasons I've been loving going back and rereading all these old uncannies. You know, just going back through and reading stuff going, I remember that. Oh, yeah. I didn't remember going that way. You know, there's been so many of those times. So it's kind of a neat. Again, I love reading the older stuff. I love reading this current stuff. So, you know, this has been a really neat experience.

00:38:34 - 00:40:00 | Speaker 2:

So they sedate him. Like, it's almost like everything fades to black for us, too. That was a great time to shift to Louisiana. So we're kind of feeling like where Charles does. I loved that choice. Yeah. We don't know quite what's happened yet. We're going to find out. But we don't know. And I love that. This is what I love about this writing. It makes me feel like, oh, you did to us what you did to him. And that was cool. I really, really dug that. So we're in Louisiana. And this is, I think, just one of the cooler sequences in the book. Because what I'm really enjoying about this X-Men run right now, you're coming off with this big monumental one that was so well received. You know, with what Hickman was doing in Powers of X and all that kind of thing that was going on back then. You're now coming back to present day where we've now, we've moved on from that. Each of these books has a different flavor. And I really appreciate that. Like, this is Uncanny X-Men. And it really embraces, like, what I've always loved about Uncanny X-Men. It feels like coming home in the way that this is being written. While still feeling contemporary, current, and a bit different. This whole training sequence where I like the heavy, you know, we've got half the team as our classic characters. Half the team are these newbies who have gotten really interested in. And we're seeing this team do their own kind of danger room setup. I love it.

00:40:00 - 00:41:48 | Speaker 1:

Love Rogue being a leader and trying to find that sweet spot of how far do you push? How far do I take what I learned from Charles, what I learned from Cyclops and incorporate it? Make sure that they understand we're playing a game right now. This is a simulation right now, but you have got to take it seriously and you've got to understand this is life and death. In the field, you are not going to have the luxury of a do-over. There are no extra lives, which especially is true now because there isn't any resurrection opportunity. So I love that like what Rogue's doing right now is harsh. It's cold, but she's doing it for the purpose of you need to smack to the face. You need to see I slipped. I fell. Oh, I'm going to scoot over here and that type of thing. That does not work. These training exercises, there has to be urgency to this. And she makes a choice, hopes her husband's going to back her on it. Doesn't 100% know. And he does. He backs her play and sets that up. And I loved how that played. And I love that the whole team did not agree with her approach. And Wolverine in the end comes back and goes, I get why you did what you did. I thought that was a nod. I'm like sitting here, I'm like, oh, Logan, all right. I like everything about how that paced. And I liked that it wasn't clean. Some of the team, you know, Jubilee in particular, had a very adverse reaction to the whole, you know, basically through a slur at her that, you know, was basically saying you're Cyclops now and that type of thing, which I loved that. I loved everything about how that played out. She was the right person to do it.

00:41:48 - 00:42:30 | Speaker 2:

Yes. Oh, big time. And again, the fact that it was best that it was Gambit doing it. And throughout this series, we've seen that where Gambit's been that go-to of, you know, Rogue. And it's, again, it's natural that it's her husband, but also natural that he 100% trusts her judgment. Flat out. You know, so it's natural that she would go to him and he would do it without even questioning. He didn't even hesitate. He's like, okay, done. Boom. Boom. And dropped her hard because they needed that life lesson. They needed that lesson of, hey, what if this was, you know, a Sentinel? What if this was that crazy Sarah? What if this was, you know, any of these other really nasty people who are hunting them down?

00:42:31 - 00:42:56 | Speaker 1:

Sinister. Omega Red. Sabretooth. I mean, she's rattling them off. I know. And she's right. But you're right. Sarah Gaunt. I'm so glad you're doing that because Sarah Gaunt was so far in this run right now. The creep factor of Sarah Gaunt in this is so high. I love her as a villain. Yes, I do too. And I love, we're throwing out the classic stuff, but then that new one that just made you feel icky. It was, I, ooh.

00:42:57 - 00:43:56 | Speaker 2:

And here's the thing. I completely agree with putting Sarah Gaunt on the same level as Sentinels, Mr. Sinister, and Omega Red. I thought that was absolutely brilliant in throwing out there. But also to go along with you with Jubilee throughout the, don't forget your Ruby Quartz visor. I was like, oh, and I love the fact that Rogue acknowledges, ain't gonna lie, that kind of stung a bit. You know, I love that, especially because we've seen in prior issues, Rogue and Cyclops going head to head, you know, one on one saying, no, this is not how we're doing it. You know, and I loved seeing that. And I thought, again, everything you said, Jubilee was the perfect choice for it. I love that Nightcrawler picks up the, you know, picks up jitter. And, you know, and he's caring or saying, it's okay. Don't worry. Everything will be fine. Because again, that fits Kirk. That fits his nature. This for me was just a brilliant sequence. And I absolutely loved, loved it.

00:43:56 - 00:44:18 | Speaker 1:

Charles's powers manifesting and just increasing and affecting the community. We see this four miles from Graymalkin prison. That's Charles, right? Do I have this right? Like what's happening where that guy goes nuts and he's seeing sentinels at the dinner table? Isn't that Charles's powers going wacky? I don't know. I didn't know if that was Charles or if that was something else happening. Isn't that why they're all afraid of him getting out?

00:44:18 - 00:44:55 | Speaker 2:

Well, yes, they're worried about this kind of stuff. But I don't know if this is actually Charles because there's another Omega level telepath at the prison. You know, and there's also Sarah at the prison. So you're thinking Charles is being set up? That's what I'm wondering. If this is, you know, someone is manipulating the scenes. Because again, Sarah is a great manipulator. She's absolutely brilliant at it. And is she manipulating Charles? Is this actually Charles? Or is this somebody completely else? I'm voting on the mutant tumor. I'm voting on the mutant tumor in his brain. Yeah.

00:44:55 - 00:45:00 | Speaker 1:

But mutant tumor also. But here's the thing, to your point about possibilities. Please. I've.

00:45:00 - 00:45:00 | Unknown:

I've. I've. I've.

00:45:00 - 00:45:01 | Speaker 1:

I haven't read the whole story yet.

00:45:00 - 00:45:01 | Unknown:

I've. I've. I've. I've. I've. I've.

00:45:01 - 00:45:06 | Speaker 1:

I deliberately have been kind of percolating on this one and rereading the issues that we're doing.

00:45:02 - 00:45:06 | Unknown:

I've. I've. I've.

00:45:06 - 00:45:10 | Speaker 1:

So I don't 100% know where this goes.

00:45:08 - 00:45:11 | Unknown:

I've. I've.

00:45:10 - 00:45:12 | Speaker 1:

So is there a possibility that?

00:45:11 - 00:45:12 | Unknown:

I've. I've.

00:45:13 - 00:45:15 | Speaker 1:

Right now where I'm at, you're at the point.

00:45:15 - 00:45:15 | Unknown:

I've. I've. I've. I've.

00:45:15 - 00:45:16 | Speaker 1:

I can see your point.

00:45:15 - 00:45:17 | Unknown:

I've.

00:45:16 - 00:45:17 | Speaker 1:

I mean, there's no argument there.

00:45:17 - 00:45:18 | Unknown:

I've.

00:45:17 - 00:45:19 | Speaker 1:

There might be some other possibilities.

00:45:18 - 00:45:20 | Unknown:

I've. I've. I've.

00:45:19 - 00:45:41 | Speaker 1:

And that could be the catalyst. Right now I'm at, this is us seeing that the sedatives stopped working. And Charles is, as we see, Charles is waking up and mutant tumors also a factor in this. It's bad. To me, I was taking this as validation as far as there's a point to them being a little bit worried about Charles getting out.

00:45:42 - 00:46:31 | Speaker 2:

I'm just saying. Here's the thing. You know, when I first, when I was the first reading through on this, I immediately was thinking Charles. So I'm with you where I was thinking Charles and the mutant tumor doing this. It's only until, you know, we see him talking to Sarah, you know, on the next page and how Sarah helps him get out and all that kind of stuff that I started. I re-looked at these pages and it made me wonder, is this Charles? Is there another person involved in this matter? You know, because that was the thing I was just wondering. Because, again, that's something like, could it be? Because, you know, Charles is patient number two, not patient number one. Patient number one is some other, you know, mega power, omega level telepath. So, and they've said that a couple issues ago, I think.

00:46:31 - 00:46:31 | Speaker 1:

Right.

00:46:31 - 00:47:00 | Speaker 2:

Where they acknowledged that, but they didn't say who it was. They just said there was somebody else. You know, so, again, that's what got me thinking. Could it be that or could it be Charles? Now, one of the things I got to say I absolutely loved about the art choice was with the dog, the sentinel face. They kind of drew out the nose. So how a dog would. I love that art choice. You know, the fact that they kind of flipped it around and actually made it extended like how a dog's snout would be.

00:47:00 - 00:48:14 | Speaker 1:

When the X-Men are waiting outside and he's seeing the original X-Men, I loved the choice of the amalgamation of the costumes of the original X-Men on our current team. Nightcrawler's Iceman was pretty slick. Wolverine is beast. You know, all those pieces. I thought it just played out really well. I guess that delusion added to my feeling that, I think maybe what I want that guy is Charles. I don't know. It's his delusion extending outward. I don't know, though. I'm not like, you know, this is one of those where I'm not necessarily fighting with you on it. I'm more telling you where my head's at right now, but I'm enjoying the ride. And if it's, and if there's a, I could see the possibility of there being another player. And if there is, all the better. I like playing with the sandbox. But I think Charles' story right now with this mutant tumor and all of that piece, he was content to stay there because he could have really done this at any point in time if he so chose. His daughter being the catalyst of, all right, I got to get out of here. I got to help my kid. Just added to this sense of, you know, danger, I guess. With him. He's dangerous.

00:48:14 - 00:48:27 | Speaker 2:

Yeah. It's something you just said got me thinking. And again, going along with my mindset of, could there be somebody else involved? Mm-hmm. The stuff we saw that Charles saw going on in outer space.

00:48:27 - 00:48:28 | Speaker 1:

Mm-hmm.

00:48:28 - 00:48:30 | Speaker 2:

Are we 100% certain that it's actually happening?

00:48:31 - 00:48:34 | Speaker 1:

Yes. Oh, I see what you're saying. Yeah.

00:48:35 - 00:48:39 | Speaker 2:

What if, yeah, again, I'm, we're going to, let's just say the mutant tumor.

00:48:39 - 00:48:42 | Speaker 1:

What if this is, what if this is a smear, what if this is a deliberate smear campaign?

00:48:42 - 00:49:16 | Speaker 2:

What if it's the tumor wanting out? The tumor being, becoming a sentient entity saying, I want to be free. You know, I want to go out. I want to get out. I want to get out of here. So I want a body. I want to be free. So I'm going to manipulate Xavier into thinking that his daughter is reaching out to him across the galaxy. And then I'm going to make all these other, and it's the tumor doing all of this stuff to him. And it is Charles, actually, his, Charles' mind doing it. But it's the tumor kind of acting as the puppet master.

00:49:16 - 00:50:15 | Speaker 1:

I take it that, this is my take, by the way. I'm not, this is, this isn't, I'm following your logic and there's a logic to what you're saying. So let's go off of that and leave that there for the moment. Where I'm at is, I feel that really happened. I do feel the tumor is a factor. I feel that this is Charles. I feel Charles is dangerous. And I feel like we're seeing why. I also understand his urgency to escape. And I support him, even though I think he's dangerous. Well, it's weird to say I support him and I think he's dangerous because of the fact that he's, if he's doing this, he's doing terrible things. So I don't know how to, I don't know how to write. rationalize that with myself and what I'm saying, I support him. Maybe I might want to pull the word support back a little bit. I get it maybe more like what he's doing, but I don't, I think what it is is I don't feel Charles understands if Charles is doing this, Charles does not fully

00:50:15 - 00:51:18 | Speaker 2:

comprehend what he's doing right now. Right. I think there's, there, there is some mental faction, dementia or whatever, however you want to word it going on with Charles, where he's not completely in control of himself. He's not seeing the world as he should be seeing it. But again, like you, I don't want to justify it because he's doing horrible things. And I love the fact that we're seeing, you know, what he truly is capable of doing all those years that we've watched Charles and we saw him as this weaker man, you know, who is this most powerful telepath, but physically we never, you know, and I know I never physically thought he could be in the lead in the field. Right. We're seeing right here. He just took down five, uh, X-Men. Yep. And he took down five experienced combat trained X-Men. Now they were holding back, but he still took them down. And I love seeing the power levels that Charles truly has. That's a long time ago where we're talking

00:51:18 - 00:51:23 | Speaker 1:

about like he wasn't in the field and that type of thing. So this is a dip. This is admittedly a dip.

00:51:23 - 00:52:08 | Speaker 2:

I still see that Charles. Sure. See, in my head, I always see Charles as that person. I know there's been a lot of stories since then, you know, that has shown that he shouldn't be, but in my head, you know, it's kind of like, you know, whenever, yeah, I think Charles Xavier, I think, you know, you know, it's, I think the, the older guy sitting in the wheelchair with his teenagers going out in the battle and this, that's the Charles Xavier I always have in my head. So it is kind of cool for me to see this version who's a serious physical butt kicker, you know, doing what he does. Yeah. And again, I know this isn't like a sudden, Oh my God, this is a dramatic change. No, this has been Xavier for a long time, but I still in my head, I always see that, you know,

00:52:09 - 00:53:34 | Speaker 1:

and he's still not your guy. You think of first we're sending him into the field. He's just more capable in the field now than we grew up with. So to speak, when he first started walking again, you know, way back when there's definitely, definitely more capable now. So there's two things going on here. So we see the sequence with Dr. Ellis there, again, the flashback to when she was explaining to them that he's got this tumor and it's, it's just like what happened with Harvey, the kid, Harvey X and all those pieces. So there's one of two things happening here. Either you take that at face value and that's, what's really going on here. Or this is also a way for him to be split off from the team and more reason for there to be this divide. I'm not sure which way I think you are posing an interesting potential pathway in this type of thing. I like when stories do that, where there's multiple possibilities. You, with any comics, you should always suspect something else. It's really cool either way. That's the great thing about all this is just how cool it is. Dude is sitting there and he was able to shove aside Wolverine. Yeah. How dare you? How dare you question me? Um, and now he's thinking they're imposters. This is where, is this the drugs? Is it the tumor? Is it a little bit, a little bit of a Charles is definitely not himself at the moment. And I'm

00:53:34 - 00:54:05 | Speaker 2:

really liking the way this plays out. Now I'll be honest with you. When he froze Kurt mid-teleport, that for me was a, whoa, you know, throwing people around with his mind is one thing. That mid-teleport freeze. I was like, wow, that right there is a serious, now I don't know if he's ever done that in the past. No. Okay. I don't think he was a, that was a holy crud moment. So

00:54:05 - 00:56:15 | Speaker 1:

this, you've been stating your evidence as far as saying there might be a third party involved here. That's my evidence. I think this is Charles. I'm just, I'm just going to say, I'm throwing it out there. I don't know. He just froze Nightcrawler mid-jump. Even if he thinks that they're imposters, I think this is Charles. I'm just saying. Because that's pretty painful what he's doing there. I loved this. Everything about this action sequence sets the stage for how powerful he is. Whether there's a third party or not, boy, this is, we haven't seen this kind of stuff out of Charles. I don't think fully since Onslaught, you know, we're, I mean, we've seen some impressive feats by this man and crazy impressive things before. What I really like. like about this is I also feel sometimes Charles is written you don't have that human side to him sometimes they make him almost too alien in the way that he's written if I'm making any sense at all what I like about this is you've got this intense power but we've got the man there too that balance of who Charles Xavier is has got to be a part of all this you know some of my favorite stories are when we've seen flashbacks to in the early years I'm talking about flashbacks with him and Magneto and Charles was like dueling you know in the astral plane and all that kind of stuff that's this guy that is this guy he went through those years of dueling and now he's he's dueling again with these imposters and showing why he is who he is again with with whatever his backpack guy on the back of his neck is doing to him or back of his head is doing to him I don't know I just I really liked this was a great way to end the we end the issue seeing the tail end of nightcrawler prominently displayed because the front of him's like in the background I mean that's uncomfortable there's just so much about that that's uncomfortable while everyone else is knocked out he got the worst

00:56:15 - 00:57:16 | Speaker 2:

of it he definitely got the worst of it that again as I said that's just a wow and I and again I love the fact that after all these years we still have these moments when you're just like whoa that's some power that right there is a statement of power and I loved seeing that that's how you open a book yeah that's how you open a crossover yes you do now this had be I'll tell you I don't about you but as soon as you know I I was I was already gonna read all these things that this right here seeing that it continues in and in NYX 9 I would that would have caused me to go pick that up if I wasn't reading NYX I this right here this opening story would have made me say I want to see it I want to read because I know in the past with some of the crossovers sometimes I'm like I'll just read what's going on in my book and just move on and not not collect all the other crossovers sometimes this right here would have made me want to pick up NYX let me ask you this let me ask you this question though

00:57:16 - 00:58:10 | Speaker 1:

when was the last time you actually did that when you started reading a crossover because here's the thing I agree with you growing up I did that a lot because I didn't have the budget or sometimes you couldn't find the other pieces of the crossover there's just a reality of you couldn't because you and I grew up at a time where it's like newsstand and what was in stock at comics and collectibles or one of our locals so you know one of the local comic shops didn't that didn't necessarily mean that they had it there when you went there so you know it was it was sometimes a luck you know as far as having that so you had to kind of go off of that and budget was probably more than anything else but do you do that and this is not a you're you brought up an interesting point if you're reading through a title and it crosses over with something now do you is there been a time in recent years where you've been like I just want to keep going on the title no wrong answer I'm just curious okay

00:58:10 - 01:00:00 | Speaker 2:

well in yes and no now okay back when we were younger sure I would always I would skip over a lot of there's a lot of famous crossovers out there that I didn't read the second part to it me too you know because of everything you said budget I wasn't getting the title I'm not gonna seek it out present day like I'm going through and I'm reading some of these older series and there's you know and again xbooks do a lot of crossovers sometimes sure you know and I'm reading in you know and I'm reading and it's going through I'm not always finding that next crossover period of an older book you know and sometimes I do but there's been a couple stories since getting the going through the uh the marvel app where I'm reading uncanny x-men and there's a crossover with another x book that I'm not that far in that series yet I'm not going over and you know jumping over to that you know so I've had a couple of that where I didn't go I'm not going to cross over I'm not going to read that just because you know I'm not there yet on that series I'm reading you know x-force but I'm not there yet you know so I'm like oh man I don't need to you know think if if this was the story being told I 100% would have gone through and said I need to read the second part of this story just because you know and then and also other stuff um there's been a couple like old old batman stories that had a couple crossovers among the different bat books and when I'm reading I'm going through reading like some old detective stuff I'm not necessarily going in and picking up you know finding the digital version of that batman that's part two of the story I can't fathom what you're talking about right now yeah there's been some where again when I'm going through

01:00:00 - 01:00:11 | Speaker 1:

through reading you know again i'm using the two different digital apps and i'm coming across a crossover not every time am i jumping sometimes i am but not every time there's a difference between

01:00:11 - 01:02:49 | Speaker 2:

what you're doing right now though and i could see doing that myself i think um where i i think the late 80s early 90s broke me um in the sense that it just broke me into i got to read the whole story ish i'm gonna throw an ish on that piece i've got it when i jump on a story i've actually jumped lines you know like where i'm like i'm gonna stop reading certain books because i started reading a crossover and i want to finish reading it if it has like let's use genesis so genesis was a crossover from dc back when i didn't need to read all like every single title genesis went into i read the genesis miniseries and i read the titles that i was reading at the time because i didn't have the like even if i wanted to read every genesis crossover issue you know when i'm talking about the ancillary ones i read the genesis miniseries this so it's different than what we're talking about right now the miniseries was the story proper and then it tied into other books i only read the books that i was reading but a miniseries is part of your budget right so when you're investing in that um there may have been a few key crossover issues that i grabbed in my budget which meant that i wasn't reading something else that i normally got during that time for my budget crossovers is the same thing like if batman crossed over into something i read even if i wasn't reading the title because i didn't have it in my budget at the time i'm like oh wait i've got to stop reading this book so i can pick up this crossover issue right now where there was a sickness to that whole thing invariably when the crossover was done i would want to go back and reread the issues that i missed of the title that i was following before and i was seeking those out there were times where i would sell books to do that you know where i'd be like okay i've read this like three times i hate doing this but it's worth something right now i'm going to part with it and i'm going to buy other books and i didn't hold on to things probably as long as i should have in some of those cases to keep the reading going i usually am a reader first on that end i can see doing it on the app though where i'm like in here's the part would be where it'd be a sickness for me if it's a miniseries i read in the past or a crossover i read in the past i might skip to keep reading the run if that's what i'm looking to do just because i read the story i'm gonna say if i hadn't read the crossover before and i encountered it i'm reading the crossover so i admire like what you're doing it to me it's it's whether or

01:02:49 - 01:03:40 | Speaker 1:

not i've read the crossover or not want to talk uh nyx yep our next discussion is on nyx writers are jackson lansing with uh colin kelly the artist is fran Francisco m-o-r-t-a-r-i-n-o and color artist is raul a-n-g-u-l-o letters by vcs joe sabino cover artist sarah pitchel with uh frederico belial uh variant cover arts by fan fan yang f-a-n-y-a-n-g uh peach momo m-o-m-o-m-o-k-o and phil noto and again as always apologies to name butchering i love this book this has been a book that uh

01:03:40 - 01:05:38 | Speaker 2:

consistently has been one every issue i just really love the character focus talk about a different feel um for years i called it nix i don't know why you know it's so dumb because it's nyx obviously takes place in new york i don't know why i got that stuck on the brain but this run is the first one where i've actually been calling it by its right name i love the team lineup and i love the character focus that we've had on on certain issues has been a great way it's the narrative focus has been on singletons even though there's there's team members that are throughout it um that have made me get really invested in this book and the team we've got charles who just escaped and this is our first book that is really addressing what charles escaping means we've got wanted signs where he's wanted dead or alive out there and reactions of people um to charles being out there this whole kind of piece leading into the team at their home base which has been an interesting establishment right now they have like kind of created this refuge for mutants that are like in their like age range mutants who are kind of disenfranchised out there is It's kind of being a sanctuary so they can learn how to use, not only just learn how to use their powers, but also feel safe from a world that does not like them at all. This sense of the mutants being persecuted and hunted goes back to what we grew up with, but it's a very, very different level than I think we've ever seen before. This book, I think, really showcases what that looks like in a very, very different way. I like that it feels like it's part of the X universe, but tonally there is a different sort of flavor to this book over uncanny. And that's what's totally working for me on this one.

01:05:39 - 01:07:23 | Speaker 1:

If you remember when we talked about that first issue with Ian and I was like, eh, okay. I wasn't like, oh my God, on this, this was one of my, I was more of a meh on there, partially because I didn't really know the people and whatnot. I'll tell you, I've dramatically changed my story on NYX since reading, you know, continuing reading the story. And a lot of this stuff you were just saying now is part of the reason why I really see the mutant plight in this story. And partially because this is taking place in New York City, partially because it's taking place in that big city where you've got the, I'm calling them the new Morlocks. I don't know what else anybody else is calling them, but you know, the sewer dwellers. And you've got NYX who's kind of got their little sanctuary thing that they're trying to build up. And it's just, I really love how they're really showing these people who have done nothing wrong, but they're being, people want to execute them just for being a mutant. And it really rang to, you know, when I was first reading X-Men, you know, back when there was only one title, you know, and it was one of the things that really made me connect with the X-Men was the fact that they were being persecuted simply for being mutants. There's other heroes out there that are completely cheered and yay, you're wonderful, you know, but they're not mutants. You know, so that's why people think, and I love that you really do get that feeling of how much mutant people, how much the mutants are hated in this book, you know, and, but the other side of that, and again, this is why I really love in this book is there's still hope.

01:07:23 - 01:07:23 | Speaker 2:

Yes.

01:07:24 - 01:08:40 | Speaker 1:

There's still hope in this team. This team still has hope in mankind. And I do love that, you know, Ms. Marvel, who's a character, I know I knew very little going into this book, but now I'm getting more latched onto her positive energy that she brings to this whole story. And I'm like, you know, I'm like, this is an awesome character. And it's gotten me wanting to read more about her, read more of the past stuff about her and just find out who this character is all about because of, you know, as horrible as life is for mutants. She still has a positive energy. She still looks at like, you know, Sophie Coco, you know, or Cuckoo. You know, the fact that she's still, you know, she, you know, there was a lot of betrayal that happened in a couple issues before this. There's a lot of stuff going on with her and her sisters and what she was doing to NYX and all of them. She never once had a, you know, a hatred towards Sophie over this. You know, and I loved even the scene. It was a couple issues ago when, when she's like, hey, sorry, like now. And she gave her a big hug, say, no, it's all cool. It was that, that positive energy she had. I was like, man, I love this story. I love this character, this, this series.

01:08:41 - 01:10:00 | Speaker 2:

She, her story changed to become a mutant. You know, I mean, like they kind of altered her origins to kind of wrap her into the mutant universe. That it was kind of a thing that came later with this character. I really like it. It wasn't, it wasn't a known quantity. That was something that was discovered. It was something that was discovered when she died for all things. Ms. Marvel got then embedded into the mutant universe and became a part of all this. The thing that's great about her is she's kind of your traditional Marvel superhero getting dropped into the X-Men world. That's where she works out really well. She's everything that you're saying. I love the positivity. I love that her whole way of operating is just traditional superhero, right? Which adds a nice balance to what you're going on here. The friendship with her and Sophie Cuckoo just totally works for me in all of this. Sophie's still got kind of that attitude edge that the Cuckoo's got. Which comes a little bit from their past. They basically were the lackeys of Emma Frost, for lack of a better way to put them. Who have continued to evolve over time. But they had that kind of pretentious edge to them that hasn't gone away from Sophie. But Sophie's kind of become...

01:10:00 - 01:12:59 | Speaker 1:

more well-rounded over time, which I really like about her. It separates her from her sisters in some way and validates the reason to have her be a part of this as opposed to being linked to that hive mind. I am really engrossed in that character and what was done with her in this. I love the whole team dynamic, but those are the two right now. If you ask me, who are your two favorite characters? It's definitely those two in that relationship. I think they're the ones that are kind of my pivotal point. And then everybody else alongside them is interesting. When Charles shows up on the scene, it's like, I'm just settling in with them in the summoner game and that type of thing. Summoner, wasn't that the name of the game? Summoner. Yeah, summoner. So, you know, I'm like, I'm relating to them. I'm digging it. I'm like, I want to play this game with them because it seems super cool. Then Charles shows up on the scene. His presentation is very much a, there's a danger to him in his presentation here that I think is working for me. And it's one of the reasons why if they're swerving me with what's going on with Charles, I have zero issue with it, but I don't know that they are. The danger feel of him, I think is, it's definitely deliberate and it's definitely working as far as taking me along in this story. This idea of him, there's a remaining seed of Korkoa that exists, you know, that is the ability for him to bring back a mutant. You know, this is the one seed that could bring back a, I believe it can bring back a singleton mutant. You get why that would be a prized commodity that he's going for. Doom, which remember, we got Doom's whole storyline going on, which at some point in time, we're going to have to tackle that in some way. I'm trying to figure out what that, how that story's playing out so I can figure out some way that you and I can engage with that on the show at some point. Because I'd like to do the Doom crossover just because we read the story that got him there. So it'd be fun to read, like, where does this go with Doom? So Doom's the Sorcerer Supreme and Doom is now like, he's taking over, the Emperor taking over. He's everything. Like super, right, right. So this is a world that's reflective of that right now. Doom's got the seed. I don't know that Doom, like Doom has control of it, but I don't know that, does Doom know what he's got? I don't know. That's one of the things I really like about this story is this idea of the seeds there. There's a reason for them to go and get it and what it can bring to them. And I like the team's kind of like, this is a quarantine zone over there. You want us to go in there to do what now? I love the debate that comes out of this because you get the urgency and it's Charles, right? So this is now your young guns that are looking at a legend who is sitting there. This is the reason why they're there at all is because of this man. And yet what he's asking of them is monumental.

01:13:00 - 01:13:37 | Speaker 1:

I love that. I love that feel because it felt real. At its best, I think one of the reasons why we're fans of the X-Men, it's when the X-Men get like this. They get grounded. We talk about this a lot with Teen Titans, right? Teen Titans does this very well. The X-Men does it just as well when it's so well written in just a different way. It's where those books, I think, over the years were complementary of each other was because of the fact that I think they scratch a similar itch, but they do it in their own unique flavors. This is what I've always loved about Teen Titans, and we're seeing it right here in that book.

01:13:38 - 01:14:51 | Speaker 2:

It's funny because normally I would be the guy saying, dude, you should go help him. But I completely understand his logic. I understand why he's saying no to Charles. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Again, it's one of those things where I love this page because he's standing up saying, hey, this is Doom. He controls the planet. He's the Sorcerer Supreme. What could we possibly do? We are not a paramilitary force. We are not his child soldiers. We will not risk the wrath of God so that we can clean up Charles Xavier's problems. I love that line right there. I love the fact that he's standing up and saying, hell no, to Xavier. That, for me, was absolutely brilliant. Further, it shows, and again, it actually, I loved the reason for the people who don't listen to him and say yes to Charles because it gives further strength to what they're saying. This right here was a great usage of who these characters are, why Marvel and they go with Charles versus why the others didn't. Each argument further strengthened the other's statement. It was absolutely brilliant. I love this.

01:14:51 - 01:15:22 | Speaker 1:

It's also not simple why they went with Charles. Right. Like, this isn't clean either. David is being very consistent with what we do. seen out of David and I really liked that like it fit the storytelling that came before so it wasn't like all of a sudden she's out of the blue oh okay it's Charles is here let's go follow him I like the debate I like the team split I like that even within the split it's not super clean and that part works really well for me we'll talk more about that but well now one thing because we

01:15:22 - 01:16:53 | Speaker 2:

spent all that time when we were talking the last issue is Charles is he being controlled is being manipulated there's a page here that well there's a panel here that you know is further arguing going along with your argument and not mine that this is actually Charles is doing and it's something I'll be honest I didn't catch in my first read through when Charles is tells me talking to Enoli saying hey hey thanks for being my guide my powers have been weak since uh Gray Malkin and I'm like weak he just took down five x-men how can you say weak and I love the fact that I didn't really completely catch that you know and it goes further on later on we see Charles doing a little bit more of a trail on the people who volunteered to help him so again further straight today the argument that no it's not Charles it's not Charles being manipulated it's Charles being Charles being the jerk that he can be sometimes so I love this little panel and again I didn't catch it until my follow-up read-throughs that he actually says that to them that he's still portraying himself as not being all-powerful because we know by Charles's power levels Charles doesn't need these two technically Charles could go in there on his own probably and have not have an issue with what he's up against but he's playing off of the playing off to them as a hero as good people saying hey I do need your help I need you know kind of an accompaniment there you know and in reality he's like I need you guys to be my distractions and I love just that little bit there that I didn't catch before

01:16:53 - 01:18:42 | Speaker 1:

that now I'm like oh further shows Charles is being a jerk the story of Volta is an interesting one here too because we start seeing like how what happened with the seed and how it all like why did the seed survive how did that all happen what led on to this story with the little kid and what was going on there um that was a great story that's Mojo isn't it that big grin um I love Mojo and it's uh I was a big fan of Longshot did you read the original Longshot miniseries years ago I don't think I did okay that was obviously that was you know some of the or the origins of Mojo come from that Longshot miniseries um which I was a big fan of back in the day so I was smiling Mojo obviously woven it out of X-Men so many times too what a what a great character it's cool to see him play out in this Charles you're right is a very very manipulative freak in this one um as far as what he's doing um there there's a point in time where he abandons them and to your point earlier and when he abandons them he's like you tell yourself you're sorry that you'll make up for this betrayal one day that you've would have helped them complete your little sham mission if only it didn't put your true goal under threat that they can face down the horrors you know await them beyond that door they'll rise above they'll win the day they're your X-Men but they're not his X-Men no no um yeah that's a tough one and again this was a he put them in play in danger to be a distraction so he could do what he needed to do in that moment he sacrificed them oh yeah and here comes the pivot the sacrifice

01:18:42 - 01:19:59 | Speaker 2:

not your sacrifice of course I love that it's Mojo giving the you know doing this commentary yep again it fits again who Mojo is how they are the broadcast and the just the the uh reality tv star you know you know before there was reality tv I love how this played out and again Mojo is just one of those villains that as a kid I don't think I completely understood him and I didn't understand the groove behind Mojo but as more as I get older and the more I read the more I really like about this level of villain I like this the nastiness of Mojo and again this really does show you know how nasty you know Mojo can be and I love just seeing him as part of the betrayal him as part of you know Xavier's portrayal of the team and it does make me wonder if more of NYX had come along how would this fight have played out differently yeah yeah you know that's those are always things that make you know you make you start playing you start wondering about because Ms. Marvel you know on her own does pretty good against Mojo and Anoli also does pretty good on it but if they had like a third or a fourth with

01:19:59 - 01:20:08 | Unknown:

these parts were usually about hours which now we did talk about this of all three the pretty festive

01:20:00 - 01:20:11 | Speaker 2:

Could they have actually thrown off Mojo better? Could they have actually survived? Could they have rised up and said, this has been the X-Men and taken down?

01:20:09 - 01:20:11 | Unknown:

little clinics and pubs so they were другихolists it males see some smart women sang

01:20:11 - 01:20:12 | Speaker 2:

I don't know.

01:20:11 - 01:20:19 | Unknown:

alwaysindo bo Thousand

01:20:12 - 01:20:23 | Speaker 2:

I love the fact that on one hand, I say maybe, and the other hand, I'm like, I think they're outgunned no matter what. And I love that I've got that questionable going on.

01:20:19 - 01:20:24 | Unknown:

that's seemingly still a bit boring to this which they compared to some of the american

01:20:23 - 01:20:36 | Speaker 2:

Again, it does further show Mojo's power. It does further add, as I said, maybe this is showing Charles's true colors, that there isn't a manipulation going on. This is just Charles being Charles.

01:20:36 - 01:21:15 | Speaker 1:

He's looking for his helmet. I mean, this is all about getting his equipment. He gave them a whole song and dance about this seat, and he wasn't even worried about it at all. It was really serving as a means to the end, a distraction, so he could get to what he was really looking for. What he put them through was, I mean, it really is a powerful tool what they grabbed, but that wasn't what he needed. He's moving on. You're a good man, a great one, even. And I'm sitting here like, he keeps trying to justify himself who he is. At what point in time is Charles going to really own that he is not? And what happens then?

01:21:16 - 01:21:17 | Speaker 2:

I don't know if he ever will.

01:21:17 - 01:21:17 | Speaker 1:

Yeah.

01:21:17 - 01:21:53 | Speaker 2:

And that's, again, that's part of the, it's the whole, the road to hell is paved with good intentions. Do the ends justify the means? All the other comments that people have made in the past about justifying horrific actions. You know, and again, in his mind, he is doing this so he can save his daughter. He's doing this so he can, you know, right a wrong that he did, that he wasn't a good father. Now, he's betrayed two X-Men, you know, just in this sequence, you know, and he would have betrayed even more if they had, if more had come along.

01:21:53 - 01:23:00 | Speaker 1:

So it's, yeah. He betrayed them in another way too. If they, he had stayed with them and they accomplished their goal of capturing the seed, Mojo wouldn't have it. Right. Because Charles would have known that it was a fake. By not capturing the real seed, they opened the door. The doorway was open for the Mojo to keep that seed and create this Mojo city, whatever that's going to be that we're seeing next issue that he puts through local, you know, so he's using local now as a conduit to make this Mojo city. What a, I love when crossovers do this. They're telling their overarching storyline, but at the same time, they're furthering the adventures of the main book. So Charles has woven in and out and acted as a catalyst for what is going to kick off to be a major problem for NYX to face when, they face no Mojo next issue at Mojo city. So I love that. Like I want to continue following Charles adventures, but I also want to read this book and see what goes on the next issue. This was a great, great issue.

01:23:00 - 01:23:24 | Speaker 2:

Now thing I'm wondering is local. Do you think he's gone, gone, or do you think he's going to be able to somehow survive this? I think he's the conduit for the seed. So the seed bursts out of him. Does that mean there's still at the heart of whatever this is still a local? Yes. Or is he gone, gone?

01:23:24 - 01:24:00 | Speaker 1:

I think Mojo is going to be controlling him for now, but I think there's going to be ways to recover local. That's my, no, wait, I've got, what do I have backing that? Not much. Right. Here's the thing. He's like, this is certainly, it's low. Local is having a, local is having a very bad day. And it looks like the bad day is not going to be stopping anytime soon. But I do think at some point in time, the, either in this storyline or in the future, that there will be a reason for them to use, like for local to survive this.

01:24:00 - 01:24:11 | Speaker 2:

Yeah. Again, I hope. the artwork they did, he's, he's strapped up to the X. Yeah. And then they show like the backside of it where the plants are bursting out of.

01:24:11 - 01:24:11 | Speaker 1:

Yes.

01:24:11 - 01:24:59 | Speaker 2:

You know, and you see the one moment where he's like, not like this. And then, you know, the explosion. So you don't technically see his body explode, but you're pretty much pretty sure he did. So it's one of those things. I love how the artwork did this. So it's giving us, giving me hope because I liked local. I, he's one of those characters that he's had some villainous runs in NYX and a couple issues. You know, where he, but he is also has those vibes where, cause you think about it, rogue was a villain at first, you know, and she became an X-Men to me. I was thinking local may end up being that kind of character where he starts off as a villain and then he crosses over and becomes a member of the NYX becomes an X-Man, you know, just because of, you know, he becomes a good guy. I was hoping for that. mouse. Mouse.

01:25:00 - 01:25:12 | Speaker 1:

Seeing this, the odds aren't in his favor. So this may be the end of local, which I hope not. Because again, I was rooting for the kid. Where's this explosion you're seeing? Okay.

01:25:13 - 01:25:52 | Speaker 2:

I'm seeing like the plants burst out everywhere, but I'm not seeing an explosion per se. I took it as local evolved into that. Not that he's, I don't see an explosion. Yeah. I think that is. Well, I'm not arguing with you. I'm more saying what I saw was local is being evolved by Mojo. Can he be evolved back? Will he evolve into something else out of this? I don't. I guess I'm more thinking what is local going to become when this is resolved? Right. And that's kind of where my head's at.

01:25:52 - 01:26:45 | Speaker 1:

Yeah. For me, I say explosion just because you got the one panel where he's like not like this. Yeah. And then the next panel right below it, you see the X and all the green shooting out of it. You know? And to me, that's his explosion. Then next you have Mojo City. So I'm like, I don't know if it bursts out of his chest kind of like, you know, the face hugger, you know, or if it's just him turning into the plants, him turning into Mojo City, him becoming a living version of the Karakoa seed. I don't know. And I think, again, I'm rooting for the kid to still be around. I'm rooting for when they finally deal with Mojo City and take down Mojo City, that local is still around in some way, shape or form. I don't know how it's going to happen, but I'm rooting for the kid. I'm hoping it happens.

01:26:46 - 01:27:49 | Speaker 2:

That X was like a trellis. Yeah. I mean, and how they how he used it with local. Yeah. It's going to be very interesting to see what happens with all of this.
