in this business of show you have to have the heart of an angel and the hide

00:00:54 - 00:01:06 | Speaker 4:

of an elephant shazam you know these these two are good very very tough to do a morning show this chit chatty it kind of thing but these two have an intellect behind uh whatever it is they're

00:01:06 - 00:01:17 | Speaker 2:

they're doing tbtl breaking news and now i'm gonna fill this silence with the words i'm saying

00:01:17 - 00:01:33 | Speaker 7:

right now all right hello good morning and welcome everyone to a thursday edition of tbtl the show that just might be too beautiful to live it's an audiophiles nightmare my name is

00:01:33 - 00:01:39 | Speaker 6:

luke burbank i am your host i consider myself to be an absolutely dead center normal average

00:01:39 - 00:03:39 | Speaker 7:

american coming to you from the nest broadcast center high in the sky above portland oregon i'm gonna try to not get distracted this episode with what's going on on twitter hi everyone welcome to my twitter but there's been a disturbing trend i'm sure you've been thinking about it too over the last 24 hours a disturbing trend of me tweeting things and then people responding to my tweet and their responses getting more hashtag engagement than my initial tweet and I will not stand for it my friends but anyway I'm putting that out of my mind and I am Focusing on episode 3,366, he said with confidence, in a collector's series. Let the fun begin. The Fry's Electronics chain has closed down overnight. Like, one day they were open, the next day they were not open. My question is, where are we going to get things like... beepers and zenith televisions and walkmans and discmans and flappy discs and nintendo power glove i will tell you what's uh going on with that company they said something in their press release that confused me deeply uh so we will uh get into that also barack the australian sheep who we meant to talk about yesterday, I should say Barack who was shorn of nearly 80 pounds of wool is, well the story is a delight and we will tell you that story coming up. Also as was promised yesterday and then not delivered on Canadians say that there is a problem with their butter. Now don't think it's

00:03:39 - 00:03:45 | Speaker 5:

okay to just roll in here at 100 kilometers per hour like your Joel Auto the Calgary Flames. At least some

00:03:45 - 00:03:55 | Speaker 7:

Canadians are saying that their butter is rubbery and watery and they're trying to figure out what is going on. We will talk about that. And because it's a Thursday, a.k.a. a Blur's Day

00:03:55 - 00:03:57 | Speaker 1:

We'll do some Blur's Day

00:03:57 - 00:04:16 | Speaker 7:

messages. We'll do all of that with the help of this handsome young stranger, the longest running co-bro of the show maybe best known for his drawings of the tall ships. He is Andrew Walsh. And he's joining me right now from the roosevelt neighborhood of seattle washington good morning my friend good morning

00:04:16 - 00:04:42 | Speaker 8:

luke um i love you it's 3367 today it's the show number thank you though for prefacing that with well i didn't want to hurt you you're stinging over some sort of twitter thing i don't even fully know i know that fragile play yeah i know that yesterday i responded to a tweet of yours and you mentioned that i got like two more likes but that was during the show so i didn't realize this was a trend or something that was...

00:04:42 - 00:05:00 | Speaker 7:

No, it's happening all over twitter.com and it's not cool. It happened with our friend and my colleague at CBS Sunday Morning, John Goodwin. He was tweeting about you know, Tomato Town and the Fortnite song. And that was getting some engagement.

00:05:00 - 00:06:43 | Speaker 2:

and then I decided to jump in. We talked about it on the show yesterday how I had written a tweet about that and then deleted it because of lack of engagement. But then I saw other people were talking about it, including John, and then I was jealous. So then I tried to write my own kind of modified, updated, tweaked tweet. And that was getting kind of no engagement. And then I think listener Hey Lloyd jumped in with a... Yeah, he meme-ified it. That was pretty funny. That was a meme that was both hilarious and hurtful of like two people at a press conference where one person has a cluster of microphones and the other person has either no microphones or one single a single microphone. And it's very clear who the interesting person is Who the person the media wants to know more from is And our friend, listener Lloyd Put John's name over the person who was having attention paid to them And put my name over the person who was being ignored That was very funny It also is, that's actually my nightmare I know the other day I said maybe it would be Living in a world where I had to keep putting Dog poop Into A dog poop container At a dog park that's full of other people's dog poop I have a new idea of hell It's just being asked to come to a press conference Where it's so visually obvious Who the person with value is That picture really It was very triggering for me Also Ken Jennings Today tweeted Replied to something I said And it got of course he's Ken Jennings Way more engagement I think there's even one more that I can't remember Off the top of my head

00:06:43 - 00:06:54 | Speaker 1:

You're stuck in this rat race man You gotta stop chasing this With your Xenus televisions Xenus I don't even know what letter I said at the end of that word My brain was kind of like

00:06:54 - 00:06:56 | Speaker 2:

Xenus warrior princess

00:06:56 - 00:07:35 | Speaker 1:

Oh my gosh I was about to transition and say I'm in a bit of a time crunch today After the show To get the show posted Which usually takes about an hour Because we live in a world where it takes an hour to post a podcast, but we don't have to talk about that negatively, but what I thought would save me some time would be if we had some, because I've already got the show Pick saved, and I'm uploading it. I'm efforting to upload it now. How much do you like that when people are efforting things? Yeah. I'm efforting to upload the photo during the show today. Are you efforting to upload it by Cobb? It's close of business? Yes. I always hear EOB, but yeah.

00:07:36 - 00:07:42 | Speaker 2:

You know what? I think Cobb is not in fashion. I think or I think EOD is more what people are doing.

00:07:42 - 00:08:11 | Speaker 1:

So I thought maybe we could also do a shortcut of like naming the show early on and just getting it out of the way. I started random. I wrote down Teenage Mutant Ninja Toilets. I don't know why. I just thought that was kind of funny. We haven't said any of those words though, right? Well, we did now. I was also thinking about the sheep story. So I wrote Lamb of Pod as a possible show title or just the classic, I was talking to the duck, which is just a good punchline for anything.

00:08:12 - 00:09:48 | Speaker 2:

Just a placeholder. Our listeners who are of the Christian faith, oh boy, that reminds me of something else this morning, will know that there's a song, Lamb of God, O Lamb of God, that if I sing it, it will be an earworm for everyone, and I want people to just focus on the Fortnite song, or possibly Kirk Franklin. That was another thing I was doing this morning, Andrew, while I was not attending our APM meeting. i was vibing on gospel music really like real church music um yeah like so i saw a tweet about a tiny desk concert by the uh the gospel artist kirk franklin and it was actually like a you know tiny home concert because uh people are doing uh you know they're recording stuff at home obviously even for things like Tiny Desk and I watched it and I am telling you Andrew it is some of the best most vibey music I have heard in forever it's also about Jesus which raises some complexity for me as a person who grew up listening to church music and a lot of gospel music actually C89.5 my high school Nathan Hale's radio station used to play gospel music on Sunday mornings like you know kind of traditional like african-american sort of uh you know church style gospel music and it was so good anyway so i hadn't haven't listened to that in years and years i know kanye kind of had a a moment with that you know sunday church that people were into yeah and

00:09:48 - 00:09:58 | Speaker 1:

wasn't that heavily influenced by his collaboration with chance the rapper early on because chance like puts together a lot of like kind of choirs and stuff right right yeah that um that

00:09:58 - 00:10:35 | Speaker 2:

recent Chance album has a ton of uh sort of gospel influence i mean peace and love to lil chano but nobody does like kirk franklin and this i'm almost tempted to play it on the show uh but i guess people can just go find it and give npr the clicks and the likes but that performance that he and his collaborators put together was just literally some of the best music i've heard in forever and so then i started listening to all these kirk franklin and the family live albums i was just i may have converted back to christianity this morning andrew i'm not sure well tomorrow is music for your weekend and

00:10:35 - 00:10:40 | Speaker 1:

you can do whatever you want but uh you know it might be fun if you picked something from that

00:10:40 - 00:11:24 | Speaker 2:

i guess but again it's complicated for me because here's what's funny i will listen to hip-hop on my own time right you know not something i would play on the show i will listen to hip-hop sometimes that has messages in it that I really don't stand by. I'm trying to do it less. I'm trying to slightly steer away from music that I kind of morally can't get with. But, I mean, there are a few holdovers, and sometimes I'll hear a song and I'll be like, man, that song, it's really good, even though I'm not down with the lyrics. But I would possibly be more inclined to listen to that kind of music I don't agree with than music that's simply saying, Jesus gives me some help in my life, Which is a much, much less upsetting message than a lot of the stuff I listen to.

00:11:25 - 00:11:52 | Speaker 1:

I have, I've been going through my records, as you know, and I'm confused about some things. Because I know I used to have a Herb Alpert record, and I can't find it in there. And there are a couple others that are in there that, or that are not in there that I swear I had. Yet I'm finding records I have no idea the origin of. including two Amy Grant records, including The Collection, which has your favorite song, El Shaddai, on it, which is, I assume, also.

00:11:52 - 00:11:57 | Speaker 2:

Hello, Yana Adonai. Age to age, you're still the same by the power of your name.

00:11:57 - 00:12:02 | Speaker 1:

I have zero idea why I have two Amy Grant vinyl records. These do not go back to my news.

00:12:02 - 00:12:06 | Speaker 2:

Well, an air and a spare. I mean, if something happens to one of them, you definitely need to have a backup.

00:12:06 - 00:12:42 | Speaker 1:

They are different albums. The one is The Collection, of course. That's kind of a famous greatest hits by her, to the degree that any, you know, kind of pre-crossover Amy Grant is famous. But, I mean, she is famous in her world, and I think the collection was a pretty big compilation for her. I can't remember what the other one was. It's not the one that has Baby Baby on it, which is when I, you know, I mean, you want to talk about a crush. I don't know. Do you want to talk about a crush? If you do, I had a big crush on Amy Grant. I mean, that video where I believe somebody wipes a little piece of grease or a little drip of grease off of her face, and my heart went aflutter. Do you remember this video?

00:12:42 - 00:12:45 | Speaker 2:

You'd always dreamed. I don't remember the video.

00:12:47 - 00:12:54 | Speaker 1:

Can you watch a little bit of it right now? Keep the sound up so we can all enjoy it. And I think you're going to remember little bits of it.

00:12:54 - 00:13:14 | Speaker 2:

I mean, speaking of my Christian upbringing, though, what I have said on the show many times is, of course, I was not really officially allowed to engage with this Amy Grant content because this is when she had become worldly because she was singing about loving someone, Andrew. Yeah, secular. Very secular.

00:13:14 - 00:13:21 | Speaker 1:

She's wearing almost like a blossomy kind of outfit, I believe, right? I'm not watching it right now. I'm just going from memory.

00:13:23 - 00:13:37 | Speaker 2:

Maybe, sort of. She's wearing a hat that's very in style. In fact, her whole outfit would absolutely work in 2021 because everybody's dressing like it's 1988 or whatever.

00:13:37 - 00:13:42 | Speaker 1:

I like that, by the way I've enjoyed this research

00:13:42 - 00:14:23 | Speaker 2:

Wait a second, hold on Stop the show I've got to go back and check something So the premise of the video seems to be Everyone's hitting on Amy Grant Including a guy who is I believe in the midst of proposing to his girlfriend But he sees Amy Grant And then takes the ring and proposes to Amy Grant I forgot about that Which is sending to me a very complicated message Is Amy Grant just out there Breaking up engagements But no the reason I had to stop the video Is because then there's a guy Or maybe he's just giving the present to Amy Grant Maybe it's not a full on engagement But then he gets down on one knee And loves Amy Grant so much Maybe my parents were right to not let me watch this video

00:14:23 - 00:14:29 | Speaker 1:

It's like the meme where the guy's looking over his shoulder At the other woman As he's walking with his presumed girlfriend

00:14:29 - 00:14:59 | Speaker 2:

I am It is like that I am stopping the video because I have like i'm 70 positive and i would like the listeners to please go to this video when you're hearing this and tell me if i'm crazy i so after amy grant breaks up that one relationship she's then walking down a different street and there is a guy a sort of larger guy with a bandana tied on his head who is for some reason on a child's like um little

00:14:59 - 00:15:29 | Unknown:

Thank you.

00:15:00 - 00:15:47 | Speaker 1:

kind of red toy car, the kind that has pedals in it that a child could pedal. Yeah, I gotta look at this now. And this guy looks for all the world like the actor Eric Stonestreet from Modern Family. And I'm just wondering if this was like a gig that Eric Stonestreet, I don't think he's actually old enough to have booked this back in the day. So okay, fine, sorry, back to our music. A guy is trying to give her basically a Rudy puppy, a yellow lab.

00:15:48 - 00:15:55 | Speaker 2:

Oh, no, though. You know what? I'm now scrolling through this. I don't think this is the one where she's also a mechanic.

00:15:56 - 00:15:59 | Speaker 1:

No, are you thinking of Christy Brinkley in Uptown Girl?

00:15:59 - 00:16:18 | Speaker 2:

I am most certainly not. That's Billy Joel and Christy Brinkley, but I am most certainly not thinking of that. That's the most certain you've ever been of anything. I know that there is a moment where Amy Grant either has oil on her face or is next to somebody who has oil on their face. It's a small teardrop of it, and one person wipes it off.

00:16:18 - 00:16:22 | Speaker 1:

Is it possible she killed someone in prison, and that's why she has a tattoo of a teardrop?

00:16:22 - 00:16:32 | Speaker 2:

It is a tattoo. No, it's an absolutely adorable, although this is also very crushable here. I'm watching along with you now Like if you were about to give

00:16:32 - 00:16:40 | Speaker 1:

A present to Genevieve And Amy Grant walked by Would you instead get on one knee And offer the present to Amy Grant Is she that cute

00:16:40 - 00:16:46 | Speaker 2:

This guy is on his knees trying to give The Rudy Dog to Amy Grant And she's like running away

00:16:46 - 00:17:11 | Speaker 1:

That's a different guy Every man in the video is in love with her Who pitched the concept for this I think that we can all agree This song is a real pop gem It's a well crafted song But upon hearing it Who said here's where we're going to go with the video Every man is trying to cheat With Amy Grant That's the concept Well it really did set the stage

00:17:11 - 00:17:16 | Speaker 2:

I mean also she is Is she returning to the same fella over and over though I believe she is

00:17:16 - 00:17:45 | Speaker 1:

She's with a guy who looks basically like Tony Romo And she and She and young Tony Romo are very happy So I guess the premise is all these other guys are trying to but Amy Grant is true to young Tony Romo yes to a young by the way this is the part of the song that slaps the hardest you know there is a guy somewhere whose claim to fame is he played synths

00:17:45 - 00:17:47 | Speaker 2:

on this song he did the solo

00:17:47 - 00:17:55 | Speaker 1:

like he starts every or he at some point in every conversation works it in oh by the way the synths on baby baby that was me

00:17:55 - 00:18:27 | Speaker 2:

Can I beseech you to try something else now? Oh, you know what? The one I'm thinking of might be every heartbeat. But there's another video she has called Good For Me. If you look that up, I'm just scrolling through it right now because I'm just looking for this mechanic scene. But it looks like Good For Me is almost exactly the same, only they're frolicking. And I think it's the same fella, only they're frolicking around like in some place more sunny and maybe tropical, like they're on vacation in Florida or the Bahamas or something. Check that out.

00:18:27 - 00:18:32 | Speaker 1:

That's very, I'm watching it right now, and that's very interesting because, oh, yeah, it's the same guy.

00:18:32 - 00:18:33 | Speaker 2:

It is the same guy, right?

00:18:33 - 00:19:18 | Speaker 1:

So was this like Amy's go-to video boyfriend? It might be her real partner, potentially. No, I believe that she, see, this was also part of the scandal, was that she divorced her husband, Andrew. Oh, no. And, yes, again, more and more evidence on the side of why it was a good call for my parents to not let me listen to Amy Grant. But Amy Grant went through a divorce, and I forget who she ended up with, but I think I want to say it was like Vince Gill. No, wait, that's a different country star. I don't think of Amy Grant as a country star. But anyway, Amy Grant was with somebody who was not the guy in this video. I know that to be sure. Something funny is going on.

00:19:18 - 00:19:41 | Speaker 2:

And by the way, I have found what I'm talking about, but I was wrong about something. I was 100% right about the mechanic scene. It was Uptown Girl. But unfortunately, it was a Billy Joel song called Uptown Girl. And the woman in it is apparently somebody named Christy Brinkley. You're joking right now. Yeah, I am joking.

00:19:41 - 00:19:45 | Speaker 1:

No, but the video is... I like how you knew all those names, though. Well, we had just said them.

00:19:46 - 00:20:20 | Speaker 2:

Yeah, but... Yeah, I've, okay, yeah, also I've lowered the bar. But the video for Every Heartbeat does contain various, I don't know, I guess, tableaus of men and women interacting. in flirty ways, intercut with Amy Grant singing. But the people who are interacting in flirty ways are not actually Amy Grant. They are other women as stand-ins. And so the cute mechanic who's got the grease on her face right now and is just being wiped away. It's happening, people. It's happening by a manly finger.

00:20:22 - 00:20:50 | Speaker 1:

Please never say manly finger again on this show. Let's just do a long piece there. But it's not actually Amy Grant who's got the grease on her face. I have a theory. It's not a theory. I have a, I'm observing that I think the guy in the laundromat from this video is also her boyfriend from the Every Heartbeat video. Did she, was there some kind of contractual thing where this guy had to be in every Amy Grant video?

00:20:50 - 00:20:55 | Speaker 2:

And what is his story? You think this is young Tony Romo again? I believe it is.

00:20:56 - 00:21:30 | Speaker 1:

Oh, we got to get to the bottom of this. Also, Andrew, I hope you're happy. I now have a huge retroactive crush on this era, Amy Grant. By the way, the guy in the laundromat, who may or may not be young Tony Romo from the other videos, at some point is reading a book. The title of the book is, and I quote, shyness. He's trying to get up the nerve. He is trying to get up the nerve to talk to another woman who is not Amy Grant in a laundromat, and he is reading the book Shyness, which would appear to be the thing he's trying to overcome. Now, if you got into the sexy

00:21:30 - 00:22:00 | Speaker 2:

part of the video, I don't think that's the same guy. Is there any unsexy part of this video? No, there isn't, but he takes, he's buff and he takes off his shirt because they're in the laundromat and he's like, oh, maybe I should wash the shirt that I'm wearing and so it's somewhat like seductively I think you're right, it's not the same guy. He takes off his shirt and he's wearing like a one of those like tank tops underneath, like a white, you know, undershirt tank top type of thing he's, oh, there's the shyness book Oh, my goodness. Oh, she's reading Shyness, too. They're both reading the same book.

00:22:00 - 00:22:05 | Speaker 1:

There's like a babushka who's just wandered into the laundromat.

00:22:05 - 00:22:31 | Speaker 2:

The old Polish woman is looking at them like she does not like the flirty energy these two are giving off. He takes off his shirt to expose some guns. Welcome to the gun show, ladies and gentlemen. And then the woman, the young woman starts unbuttoning her shirt. And there's a long moment of, will she go topless in this laundromat as well? But then at the last minute, she decides, no, I'm not that girl. And she throws a bunch of potentially dirty clothes at him.

00:22:32 - 00:22:45 | Speaker 1:

I will just tell you that Amy Grant, in these now, I think, three videos we've looked at, is a fashion icon. She's great. Everything she's wearing is so in style right now in 2021.

00:22:46 - 00:23:02 | Speaker 2:

I'm telling you, like, this has been, I feel like my whole life has been leading up to this moment in 2021 where I could publicly bro down with my friend at age 44 and 45, respectively, about our appreciation of Amy Grant.

00:23:03 - 00:23:04 | Speaker 1:

I think I'm still 44, by the way.

00:23:04 - 00:23:10 | Speaker 2:

Are you? Oh, congratulations. Sorry, I'm 44. So we're both 44. It's one of those moments where our ages align.

00:23:10 - 00:23:19 | Speaker 1:

That's fun. Yeah. It's everyone's favorite time of year when our ages align. But you know what? When you said that, I had to really ask myself, am I 45?

00:23:20 - 00:23:27 | Speaker 2:

I did that actually just yesterday. We're at that age now, aren't we? Yes. Well, I don't know. I can drive. So I know I'm like over 16. I can vote.

00:23:28 - 00:23:35 | Speaker 1:

And also under 90. Yeah, right. I'm allowed to drive. So that kind of puts it in that part of the spectrum.

00:23:35 - 00:23:55 | Speaker 2:

Did I ever tell you that for a long time in my life, I was really worried about the draft? And then I'm trying to remember if I had this realization with you on the show or if I was just with Genevieve at one point. point I said oh I don't have to worry about the draft anymore which I mean I think I realized that 10 years too late but I just remember being a kid and like the idea of going to going to army

00:23:55 - 00:24:48 | Speaker 1:

mother was as scary as going to prison I had the same fear I was very very focused on what the rules around the draft were what what draft dodging was could I get into it like I think because we are just old enough that people in our parents generation you know had been drafted like my uncle Mike got drafted I think and went to Vietnam and so as a kid particularly as a young male at that time thinking okay there's a possibility that the government will tell me I have to go be in a war yeah and be shot at or my big fear was tortured uh unlike most children I was very anti being tortured as a kid oh really i was very afraid of being tortured so it was like you know i spent a lot of time thinking about like is there going to be another draft

00:24:48 - 00:25:00 | Speaker 2:

and will i be drafted yeah me too i remember and i also was i kind of you know developing some anti-establishment feelings generally speaking although i was not

00:25:00 - 00:26:12 | Speaker 1:

You will be unsurprised to hear that I was not somebody who was following politics, news, current affairs, all that closely. I was not smart about these things yet. I still had some strong opinions, which is always just a great combination, especially for a headstrong teenager. But I remember getting something in the mail that said, you know, OK, fill this out so you can get your draft card and me being like, no, thank you. and then like my dad finding it and like I didn't even think it was a wait they so there was still they were still having draft cards I have a draft card somewhere except I think maybe maybe later in high school out of um protest I might have ended up throwing mine away because I hated it like yeah I had a piece of you ain't no fortunate son yeah that said like okay you have to you know you now have to fill this out to get your draft card and I just ignored it and then my dad found it somewhere and he was like you feel that i'm like i'm not getting a draft card he said you fill it out and i was like all right and i did i was that's the same as selective service yeah is that what it's called yeah i think it's called select your selective service card right

00:26:12 - 00:26:40 | Speaker 2:

is that different than a draft card every man just reading from the internet so this can't go wrong every man who is registered with the selective service system will receive a registration acknowledgement letter with a registration card in the mail from selective service yada yada this is proof of your registration and can be used when applying for federal student aid etc etc um i i think i thought that when you did the selective service card that was also putting you on whatever list it is for draft are we talking about the same thing i yeah i think so

00:26:40 - 00:27:07 | Speaker 1:

so that's not the same thing so were you reading from wikipedia or the actual selective service website because when i was just reading from the first piece of text that showed up on the internet okay because when you go to the website it says it's your country take one minute to protect it When you register with the Secret Service, or Selective Service, not Secret Service, you're helping ensure a secure future for your community in the United States of America. So registering for men 18 to 25. So that's got to be the same thing. Yeah, I think we're talking the same thing.

00:27:07 - 00:27:31 | Speaker 2:

I was confused, though, because I thought that in Ohio there was literally something that came to your house called Draft Card, which would have freaked me the flip out. But it's basically the same thing, right? Yeah, it is. it is but if it literally said draft on there i would have been i would have been extra terrified as it was uh my my closest uh brush with military service was one time the army sent me socks

00:27:31 - 00:28:13 | Speaker 1:

as a like a recruiting tool really you didn't get that scooby no i didn't get any am i making scooby that's not the worst nickname i've ever had if you want to stick with it just try it on for a week or two yeah sure play in that space but uh uh no i did not get any recruitment gifts and i certainly the socks are not the way to this soldier's heart i'll tell you that right now there's our show title where are we on the show sheet by the way because i don't think we nowhere near it not even within a mile you threw it away like a draft card a long time yes i burned it i i

00:28:13 - 00:28:25 | Speaker 2:

I threw it back over whatever fence John Kerry threw his Purple Hearts over. Wow. Some gave all. Wow. And some just threw a thing over a fence.

00:28:25 - 00:28:28 | Speaker 1:

I didn't know we'd be swift boating in this episode.

00:28:30 - 00:30:07 | Speaker 2:

So when I was in high school, probably because I went to a Christian school, I'm going to assume that this was maybe more likely because I went to a politically conservative school. That maybe they somebody there put me on the list for getting materials from basically my like 10th and probably more like my 11th grade year was full of basically had two things going one deep terror because I knew that I had gotten someone pregnant and also just a an absolute sort of stream of college materials from liberal arts colleges because I had checked when I took the PSAT. I had checked Liberal Arts College as what my interest was I didn't even, to this day I don't really know what a Liberal Arts College is But I checked that box and I got every kind of glossy mailing From every single small Liberal Arts College all over the country And then I also somehow was on the list The very narrow Venn diagram overlap of people who are apparently interested in military service And want to go to a Liberal Arts College And so I also got some Go Army socks that were like kind of knee length, maybe calf length. And I loved those socks. You did like them. Oh, so that was the weight of that soldier's heart. It was because I, you got to remember, at that time, I was, my default setting was very conservative. I had been raised conservative. I think I was very, as they would say, pro-life, although I think that's kind of – I don't love that terminology.

00:30:07 - 00:30:38 | Speaker 1:

I feel like they really won. I think you're smart. You called me out on that a while ago, not in a bad way. They don't say that anymore, do they? They say you called me in. Have you heard that? Oh, no. Yeah, I was on the meeting the other day. You just called me in over calling you out? Thanks for calling me in on that because I think – I like that. It's actually – yeah, it's like a way of like kind of – It's so much less – Like we're including you now. we're bringing you in to this knowledge that that's not necessarily the way we talk or that's not a phrase we use or whatever, but we're not calling you out. We're bringing you in. I like that.

00:30:38 - 00:31:46 | Speaker 2:

I feel like that is so much less threatening as a person who is very, very easily threatened by any kind of negative feedback. I like calling you in. Yeah. But, but, but yeah, so the, the, the pro-life thing again in quotes was a big deal for me. I was sadly, I mean, i just had a ton of beliefs that i really really don't stand by now um in those days i don't think i saw like i don't think i saw the army as something that was we have listeners that have you know are serving currently like remember that amazing family from oman oh yeah that that zoomed in uh for one of our during last year's thon like so we have we have many listeners who are active military or or you know former military and so i i don't want to say anything disparaging but certainly when i was in high school i had a very uh i was very much in in in the bag for the idea of the military and uh the republican party and all of that stuff not that i'm saying our listeners who are in military service are republicans right right right yeah yeah um yeah and i think for you and i would not have gotten along you don't yeah this comes up from by the

00:31:46 - 00:31:49 | Speaker 1:

Wait, did you say, were those socks green? Were they Army green?

00:31:49 - 00:32:10 | Speaker 2:

They were white, but the Go Army was in green. And then it had something coming off of, like, the word Army that was some kind of a, like, a little design. So it had a band around it. So, like, Go Army and then a band that went from the end of the Y around to the beginning of the G.

00:32:10 - 00:32:34 | Speaker 1:

Okay. I'm actually looking to see if I can find them online. I typed in 1990s Go Army Socks, and I got foot wraps on Wikipedia. Seems like that was a swing and a miss, Internet. Yeah, they call – we're all over the place, and maybe I should just stop talking and go to a break. But how many times have you subtweeted me during this conversation? Are you checking to me? I haven't even –

00:32:34 - 00:32:35 | Speaker 2:

No, I told you. I don't tweet during the show.

00:32:36 - 00:32:50 | Speaker 1:

Right. Yes, of course. You know, the W on the University of Washington logo, whenever that W appears on anything, it's got to be touching the end because they call it the boundless W. Are you familiar with all of this?

00:32:50 - 00:32:59 | Speaker 2:

There was just a story in the paper like yesterday about this. Really? Oh. Yeah. I had never heard of this before as a University of Washington alum.

00:33:00 - 00:33:56 | Speaker 1:

I mean, apparently. Yeah. My guess is it probably that was a design marketing decision that came probably after your time. But I knew about it because, you know, I don't know if it if that change happened around the time Genevieve was new there or she was just acquainting herself with the, you know, UW's traditions. And, you know, she has to pay attention to that stuff for her job. But one of the things you might notice if you're walking around town, you're like, hey, I like those purple masks with the University of Washington W on them. But it just it's kind of drives you a little bit crazy because it's not centered in the right way or it seems like it's off. Check. Chances are it's because that W has to be touching the edge because it's boundless. Can boundless W be today's show? I already wrote, socks aren't the way to this soldier's heart. Although, Lamb of Pod, by the way, is already a podcast that's out there, and it's not religious. Isn't that— Sweet Lamb of Pod.

00:33:57 - 00:34:51 | Speaker 2:

Don't you feel like that should be a religious podcast, for real? I mean, I will tell you, you're going to get a lot of hop-ons. Yeah. If you name your pod Lamb of Pod, and then it's not about the Jesus. Yeah. People are going to be very confused. I am very sort of split over this boundless W situation. Like it seems my knee jerk is that's very silly and corny, but we're talking about it. And maybe, I mean, this is where design matters. You know, maybe subconsciously I've been seeing this version of the W from the University of Washington for the last however many years. And it's maybe subconsciously sent a message to me about how boundless the possibilities are for UW grads, including being a fairly successful media personality who is not in the University of Washington Communications School Hall of Fame.

00:34:51 - 00:36:01 | Speaker 1:

Yeah, that would be me. Yeah. And you it is not even like you haven't applied not to rub it in. But didn't somebody I was I applied in. The refill is applied for me, and it was turned down. I know. That galls me. I will say this. That stings. That feels like a bounded W to me. I'm on the website. There is a special website for the Boundless W. I'm looking at the UW branding. It is a graphic treatment of the University Block W logo. What makes it boundless? When it aligns to the bottom or either side of a frame edge, it creates the appearance of bleeding off the page, giving it the feeling of not being contained. Our university wordmark is a partner to the boundless W and should appear opposite the boundless W on the page. I lost whatever I was talking about there. But they show a bunch of examples. I will say from a design sensibility, I do not like it. But you know this about me. I like things to be very symmetrical or, you know, framed and buffered and padded, just visually speaking. When I see the W and they show a bunch of, like, examples of, like, you know, letterhead and whatnot. And the W is literally touching the edge of the paper It gives me a bad feeling Oh, I'm the opposite

00:36:01 - 00:36:24 | Speaker 2:

I love negative space In fact, yesterday I mentioned on the show That I was about to go off and do this Zoom interview For CBS Sunday Morning And I was talking to a guy in Colorado And it just so happened that The way that his shot was oriented It was mostly negative space And I loved it And I hope the editors leave it in Because it was him, but then it was a lot of white wall John

00:36:24 - 00:36:40 | Speaker 1:

No, I want to be clear here. I love negative space. I would say it's a guiding principle of every photo I take. But that space, I like a little space to be buffering the edge of the frame, too. I don't like things bumping against the edge, which is the whole point. I see. And they also do say here.

00:36:40 - 00:36:51 | Speaker 2:

So if you were taking a picture of something, you would use a lot of negative space, but you wouldn't have that something be at the edge of the photo touching the edge of the frame that you were taking.

00:36:51 - 00:37:55 | Speaker 1:

Like if I was taking a photo of you, like let's just say we're out in the salt flats again, right? And I'm taking a picture of you and you're the only thing in the frame and there's tons of negative space all around you. I wouldn't, though, have the edge of your left arm literally touching the edge of the frame. I would nudge you. I might leave you over to the left. I wouldn't put you directly in the center. Right. But I would leave a little bit of a space between the edge of your coat sleeve and the edge of the frame, right? I don't want it to look like you're bleeding off the page the way this is. By the way, they do say specifically, don't let the W bleed off of two sides. Like, don't let it touch both the top and right edge. It can only bleed on one. The boundless W can only be boundless in one direction. But you know what? If that W bounces up into the upper right corner and perfectly touches everything, that's good luck. Yes, absolutely. You got a screen. You know what I'm talking about, right? The DVD screen. There's a whole website. I think if you just type in DVD bounce screen, you can just watch that during the show. Of course, it'll drive you nuts. But does it?

00:37:55 - 00:37:58 | Speaker 2:

I mean, it must eventually bounce perfectly into the corner.

00:37:58 - 00:38:03 | Speaker 1:

Let's hear. I found a 10-hour video on YouTube of the DVD thing bouncing around.

00:38:04 - 00:38:46 | Speaker 2:

This is how I'm going to start going to sleep. They say you should look at more screens right before bed, right? Yes, that's definitely what I've been doing, yeah. But I will tell you that probably two or three of the greatest moments of my life have just been when the DVD video bouncing logo goes perfectly, perfectly into a corner. I mean, that is that's just one of the greatest moments in life, along with pulling plastic off of something that you didn't know. Yes. Had plastic on it for years. And I like that. That's my brand. I like that listeners get at me with that. like if listeners have the moment where they realize oh this microwave has had a cover on it all these years they'll send they'll tweet me pictures of it and it's very satisfying well

00:38:46 - 00:38:54 | Speaker 1:

somebody even said that the story coming up in a little bit about the sheep gave them the same satisfying feeling so maybe we should take a break and oh my god i just hit the corner that's a it's

00:38:54 - 00:38:59 | Speaker 2:

a sign we got to go to break uh a quick break in the back with more tbto

00:39:06 - 00:39:10 | Speaker 1:

Thank you, baby.

00:39:10 - 00:39:36 | Speaker 2:

Huh, so we're not coming in with a Fortnite song, I guess. Oh, I don't have the Fortnite song. I thought that was our new donor of the day. I'd be happy to. I'd be 100% happy to. Have you spent any of the last... Oh, my God. Sorry. I got to stop this. I thought this DVD thing was going to be kind of like you doing your Hex Empire. Yeah. Where it was just distracting enough, but not too distracting. Yeah. But it's actually too distracting, because right now it looks like it's about to go in

00:39:36 - 00:39:40 | Speaker 1:

the corner and it didn't are you my brain watching on youtube because i'll tell you this i'm watching

00:39:40 - 00:39:44 | Speaker 2:

the one that raul blanco put on do you see that there are i mean don't look though there are

00:39:44 - 00:39:54 | Speaker 1:

spoilers below it tells you exactly what the maria how dare you somebody named maria has gone on and

00:39:54 - 00:39:59 | Speaker 2:

told us all of the times you know what actually that's a public service yeah some people i don't know people's lives maybe they have young children at home

00:39:59 - 00:40:29 | Unknown:

Thank you.

00:40:00 - 00:40:00 | Speaker 2:

Maybe they're busy.

00:40:01 - 00:40:02 | Speaker 1:

Fast forward to the good part.

00:40:02 - 00:40:36 | Speaker 2:

Maybe they're working three jobs. The idea, I mean, we are going to thank the donors of the day, I promise. The idea that first somebody would think to put this up and loop it, and then the idea that somebody else would come in the comment section and figure out exactly all the moments when it hits the corner. Yeah. That is not something our grandfathers thought about. Like, that is layers of things that people from 30 years ago could have never predicted would be a thing.

00:40:36 - 00:40:38 | Speaker 1:

Yeah, I think so. And they certainly didn't tweet about it.

00:40:40 - 00:41:25 | Speaker 2:

Well, and then their friends didn't subtweet them and get more interactions. I mean, that's a thing we definitely know didn't happen. Okay, let's thank our donors of the day, the people who are actually paying good money for this. Those of you who are not donating, just realize it's because of the generosity of these folks. like brad baxendell of norfolk virginia never miss a chance to over pronounce norfolk virginia i flew into norfolk um i don't know a couple years ago obviously pre-pandemic can't even remember what i was doing down there i wonder if that's the closest airport to get to the outer banks of north carolina surprisingly it might be i was i took a trip to the outer

00:41:25 - 00:41:31 | Speaker 1:

banks once but you know that was a road trip though that was a road trip uh outer banks they

00:41:31 - 00:42:12 | Speaker 2:

i think they use obx everybody if you see obx that's what they're referring to it's the boundless obx you're not allowed to put it in the center of the hat anyway thanks brad for the donation also christy elburn is in grand rapids michigan where i've also been the rapids there are so grand andrew you almost can't imagine them that's why you decided not to go live in michigan because you weren't ready for just how Grand the Rapids were. You knew that your life would—you wouldn't be able to stay away from the Grand Rapids. I'm not a strong enough swimmer. No, you're not. Leah Farzin is in Juneau, Alaska. How about that? What up, Leah? How about that? Are we ever going to do a live show in Alaska?

00:42:12 - 00:42:15 | Speaker 1:

Ooh, that would be good. I like that idea.

00:42:15 - 00:42:27 | Speaker 2:

We're thinking about TBTelathon ideas for this coming TBTelathon, maybe Juneau, Alaska. You know, the best eagles, you know, you guys are members of the eagles.

00:42:27 - 00:42:28 | Speaker 1:

Yeah, the fraternal order of eagles.

00:42:28 - 00:43:20 | Speaker 2:

Yeah, you guys are members of Airy Numero Uno. Indeed. Along with Camaro Kev, our friend Katie. Is Katie still the president? I believe so, yes. The best eagles that I've ever been to is in Ketchikan, Alaska. Oh, yeah, you took photos. It's right on a river. It is. It's everything you would hope an Eagles would be in terms of just the the vibe. I mean, it's also beautiful. It also feels like a town that a dragon Ketchikan, Alaska, feels like a town that a dragon will at some point burn down with its fiery breath. Oh, really? What's the town in Loder? It's like it's like I'm sorry. I want to apologize in advance for saying this because I know it's probably wrong, but it's like Rivendale or something. there's like a lake town that smog comes down and burns up and uh this feels very much like that

00:43:20 - 00:44:04 | Speaker 1:

when you're in there in ketchikan alaska can i just interject for one moment here because i was trying to remember the term and i looked it up i've heard it a million times but you know that the president of the fraternal order of eagles whether it's the big president of the entire organization or the president of the individual areas the the proper title is grand worthy president it always seems like a bit much of course i don't want to speak ill of my fraternals but um it just seems like a bit much like yeah and of course katie makes us call her that right like she won't speak to us until we get to one knee hold a puppy up to her and say will you accept this rudy dog grand worthy president yes baby baby by the way um there's a lot of question

00:44:04 - 00:44:16 | Speaker 2:

on the internet as to if Smaug could have really destroyed Rivendale. Is there? Sure. You're not spending time on Entmoot? Entmoot? A board dedicated to the works of J.R.R. Tolkien?

00:44:16 - 00:44:20 | Speaker 1:

Is an Entmoot when the Ents get together to figure out who their leader is? Because there's a king's...

00:44:20 - 00:44:23 | Speaker 2:

No, it's when Ents are arguing over something that doesn't matter.

00:44:23 - 00:44:28 | Speaker 1:

It's just... Can we just end the show now?

00:44:29 - 00:45:49 | Speaker 2:

It's probably the best joke I'll ever make. I mean, literally, can this be the last episode? 3,367. I need this job so bad, man. In the appendices to Lord of the Rings, there is an account of the meeting of Thorin and Gandalf at the inn in Bree, which says Gandalf was worried how Sauron might use Smaug with terrible effect. And he later says the hobbits that Smaug might have destroyed Rivendell, which raises some questions. You know what? I'll just bounce this off David. From the basement and my dad later. This will give us something to talk about next time we get together. But anyway, I'm sure Rivendell is wrong. My knowledge of Lord of the Rings just comes from that Bakshi cartoon. Right, the trippy one. Yeah, the trippy one from the 80s. And so I know that Smaug destroys a town, but I actually don't know if that's canon or not or if that was just something they did to kind of move the plot along. What do you like saying more, Norfolk or Smaug? well um it's that's a great question because i've been saying both of them a lot in the last 12 minutes of the show i mean i what do you think is that extra because i mean we all just say people who are referring to just say smog right because smog kind of sounds like yeah you know he breathes fire it's kind of smoggy did you ever go to the smog cutter when you lived in la

00:45:49 - 00:46:03 | Speaker 1:

yeah yes was that in koreatown uh where was the smog cutter the smog cutter smog or you know what no maybe maybe that's the name of a tiki drink and i'm wondering if i'm just confusing the drink

00:46:03 - 00:46:27 | Speaker 2:

with the place where's the place the smog cutter was kind of like not super i was on virgil i think and it was sort of not super far from like the um scientology the main scientology center that's like on santa monica i think um it's a very very hip bar so if you went you probably went with van um but uh it was a cool bar but it always smelled like the toilet was overflowing okay yes it looks

00:46:27 - 00:46:32 | Speaker 1:

like a real dive bar but it's like kind of a very popular dive bar yeah well popular with a certain

00:46:32 - 00:46:51 | Speaker 2:

you know yeah angeleno um but uh no i don't know like i i i'm seeing how small i grew up calling that dragon smog but then you see it written down and it's like sma or ua aug or something so it's like seems like it should be pronounced differently i don't know am i being extra by not just saying

00:46:51 - 00:47:21 | Speaker 1:

no i i don't know i i apologize calling me in on this i i don't um i don't really have an opinion i do think that i was just hearing jerk i think i was just hearing smog in norfolk a lot but i can't do those any better like i i grew up calling uh folk music folk music like me too and And I had to like really train. So I always when I get around those words, they stand out to me anyway. Like Norfolk and then folk. It's different than folk. It's pronounced Smaug songs. There you go.

00:47:22 - 00:48:11 | Speaker 2:

You know who else we've got to thank? Another donor of the day. Noriko Ikuta is in Vancouver, Washington. Noriko, if I go out on the world's smallest balcony, I could I could almost see you up there in Vancouver, Washington. Thank you so much for supporting the program. Then we've got Michelle Landwehr in Arlington, not Texas, Andrew, not Virginia, Massachusetts. What? Twist. Mm-hmm. In a twist no one saw coming. Tracy Ling is in Linwood, Washington, home of—I don't want to say this to sound like I'm being dismissive of Linwood. I'm being very positive towards the town of Linwood, home of my very favorite roller skating rink, the Linwood Rollaway. Oh, right. Linwood Rollaway. Adjacent to the Linwood Bowlaway.

00:48:11 - 00:48:17 | Speaker 1:

When we had a guest on who used to work at that one, right? Or am I confusing my bowling alias?

00:48:18 - 00:48:29 | Speaker 2:

I think you're right. I think we had somebody who was telling us about, like, the shoe situation and other such, you know, just dazzling deets from the life of a roller rink employee.

00:48:29 - 00:48:51 | Speaker 1:

Yeah, working there as a teenager. she was um i don't know man thanks yoda i don't know okay here's my scooby yoda then we'll move on okay okay um okay i'm ready uh scooby snack i want a mystery you will not solve

00:48:51 - 00:49:39 | Speaker 2:

until meddlesome meddlesome children you have been what are we doing what is happening today i promise i am not on anything i i might be a little drunk but no more than usual okay thank you so much to all of our donors of the day we just couldn't do this show without you hello and welcome to top story all right uh roughly 50 minutes into the program it's time for top stories um let's uh i i'm sorry to do this but let's just go ahead and we'll we'll push the australian sheep story and the canadian story although you did a nice you made a nice segue to the sheep story we have to use we have to talk about the fry story though

00:49:39 - 00:49:43 | Speaker 1:

because that's already the photo up on the website. Well, that's what I'm saying. Yeah, so we've got to do that.

00:49:44 - 00:49:47 | Speaker 2:

Also, can you quickly gin up another butter-related intro for tomorrow?

00:49:47 - 00:49:59 | Speaker 1:

Oh, shoot. You're right. Yeah, well, actually, I can do Butterfield's Diet. Yes, there you go. Perfect. Okay, good. Thank you. So let's talk fries. Do you know, Andrew, that I...

00:49:59 - 00:50:43 | Speaker 2:

Okay. was not aware because the speaking of the smog cutter the fries that i used to go to was on sunset by you know the vista theater in la yeah yeah there was a kitty corner to the vista there used to be a fries back in the day but it was a normal fries yeah that wasn't there when i was there um it was not like the ones that i've only learned existed i thought our friend jesse thorn from the various max fun projects tweeted out yesterday rip to fries and he said and he attached a picture of one like an aztec cat like aztec uh you know what would you call it castle an aztec building um and i just thought maybe he grew up near a weird fries but this was

00:50:43 - 00:52:16 | Speaker 1:

a thing right yeah it was a temple an ancient aztec temple i didn't know about that until i was reading about it in cnn yesterday so fries for those who don't know it was just like it was a big kind of warehouse-y electronics store. You could get all kinds of stuff there, including like weird, you know, the stuff that appeals to me, like, oh, I need a very specific cable, a very specific cable, fries might have it, but also I need a refrigerator, fries might have it. I think they, did they, did they, am I lying about that, Luke? Did they sell things like appliances? Maybe not. Maybe just like televisions and whatnot. I don't know if they sold like actual refrigerators, but it was, these places were often huge. And I love them. But then a few of them had these themes. And the very first fries I went to, I don't think I knew it was a chain because it was so bonkers. It had a spaceship crashed into the front of it, like a big, fake, old fashioned, like kind of 1950s era, kind of like flying saucer with a couple of rockets crashed into the front of the building. You walked underneath this supposedly like kind of crashed ship to get in. And then throughout, there were all kinds of like homages, like actual like statuary in the store that were homages to various like, you know, 1950s, 60s, golden era sci-fi movies. It was an entire experience. And I didn't realize until yesterday that there was also, like you said, the one in Arizona and Phoenix has an Aztec temple theme. And then the one in Texas was, it says, inspired by the state's oil history. So that's good.

00:52:17 - 00:52:49 | Speaker 2:

Right. I wonder what that one looks like. There was a lot that I didn't know about fries until. Is there a big statue of Warren Moon there? Yeah. A big statue of, God, can I name one other Houston oiler from that era? I cannot. I almost said Webster Slaughter, but he was a brown. He was a brown. Was he also a Houston oiler back in the day? Not that I know of. I have to be honest with you. This is not a comment on our over-reliance on fossil fuels, but I think the Houston Oilers is a better name than the Houston Texans.

00:52:49 - 00:52:56 | Speaker 1:

Me too. Oh, oh, hands down. And also they had some pretty sweet uniforms, if I recall. Yeah, they did the powder blue.

00:52:56 - 00:53:26 | Speaker 2:

They called their stadium the House of Pain. Ooh, I didn't know that. Jump around. Indeed, this was long before Everlast and his crew even were twinkles in anyone's eyes. Anyway, there's a lot that I learned about Fry's from this article you sent me, Andrew. I didn't realize it had only been around since 1985. Now, I guess what I need to recognize is 1985 was actually a long time ago. Yeah, yeah. But it seems relatively recent to me. Right, yeah. I was like, oh, I assume this was started by Stan Fry in 1943 or something.

00:53:26 - 00:53:32 | Speaker 1:

Sure, yeah, or I could see it being a 60s era thing, but that was probably influenced by, again, the imagery inside the one I went to in Burbank.

00:53:33 - 00:53:46 | Speaker 2:

Also, only had 31 stores. so many of our across nine states so many of our listeners have probably no earthly idea what we're talking about i assumed it was a huge national chain in fact there was one in washington and i

00:53:46 - 00:55:00 | Speaker 1:

only went there once because i didn't discover fries yes curves is that yes down but yes renton because i didn't discover fries until i was in la but then i was up here and do you remember genevieve and i were doing our our only like live in front of an audience after these messages with They're friends from Northwest Nerd, and there was a video component to it, something we've never had to consider before. Like, if we're talking about commercials but we're in front of an audience, we have to show the commercials, not just play the audio. And I was, like, very nervous just from a technical standpoint. Like, I had to figure out all the technical stuff, and most of the other performers for podcasts weren't doing an AV component. And I was like, not only am I nervous about hosting the show and kind of being the lead voice on the show, Like, I was the tech guy who had to, like, figure all this stuff out, not to complain. I was just very, very freaking out about it. And I looked up Fry's in Washington, found the one down in Renton, drove down their longer drive than I expected. Well, those S-curves, you know. Right, absolutely. Very windy. And I bought some of the most bizarre – like, literally, I kept the receipt for one of them. I'm like, I can't, it's like an, I have something that is a, I think it's like a 3RCA2.

00:55:00 - 00:55:04 | Speaker 4:

to what is the old-fashioned plug that used to be video out for computers, Vietnam?

00:55:05 - 00:55:07 | Speaker 3:

The one with the two little, like, screws on the side?

00:55:07 - 00:55:12 | Speaker 4:

Yeah, not the one that was before HDMI, but it was, like, VGA, maybe, I think.

00:55:13 - 00:55:19 | Speaker 3:

VGA, but it's got, like, 8 million prongs, and it's kind of like a, it's a very weird sort of trapezoidal shape.

00:55:20 - 00:55:27 | Speaker 4:

I have something in my closet right now that still has a receipt attached to it, because I was going to return it to Fry's someday, and it looks like the thing.

00:55:27 - 00:55:29 | Speaker 3:

Well, that ship has sailed, my friend.

00:55:30 - 00:55:49 | Speaker 4:

In the Far Side cartoon where a Native American is holding up some squiggly thing and he's saying this is the only part of the buffalo we don't use, that's what this cable looks like. It's got all these dangles and dongles, and I have no need for it. But I was like, I got to buy everything because I don't know what the equipment at the convention center is going to be.

00:55:49 - 00:56:13 | Speaker 3:

um the other thing i didn't know about fries was that it was started by three fry brothers and their goals is according to the cnn piece i should mention that it's this was written by jordan valinsky over at cnn business um they started this store with the goal of being quote silicon valley retail electronics store to provide a one-stop shopping environment for the high-tech

00:56:13 - 00:56:25 | Speaker 4:

professional now i didn't realize and this is really dumb on my part but this was a reminder to me that Silicon Valley was called Silicon Valley before the late 90s.

00:56:26 - 00:56:28 | Speaker 3:

Oh, you know what? I don't know if I actually knew that.

00:56:29 - 00:56:40 | Speaker 4:

I mean, when I read that, I was like, I never thought about that. Because I think they were already in that high-tech chip sector, right? I would like to be in a high-tech chip sector, get some Doritos.

00:56:42 - 00:57:36 | Speaker 3:

And the other thing that I found kind of interesting about the press release from the Fry Company is they said, it's hope that undertaking the wind down, because this was basically like, there was no announcement like, hey, we're going to close on Friday. Oh, that would have been a, they should have closed on a Friday, right? Oh, yes. Missed opportunity. I didn't even realize that until I said it out loud. But there was no like announcement, like we're closing on a certain date. They just, like somebody, even as we speak, is driving up to a Fry's and they're like looking at it, like confused, like why is it not open right now? They closed down kind of suddenly, and they wrote in their press release that they hoped undertaking the wind down through this orderly process will reduce costs, avoid additional liabilities, this all makes sense, and minimize the impact on our customers. Really? I feel like this maximizes the impact on your customers. It really does. I don't know how you could maximize it more.

00:57:37 - 00:57:43 | Speaker 4:

I guess if you trapped some of your customers in the fries, that would impact them more.

00:57:43 - 00:57:47 | Speaker 3:

Right, like that Frank Whaley movie where he's trapped in a Target.

00:57:47 - 00:57:52 | Speaker 4:

Oh, right. And you go with Frank Whaley there, not Jennifer Connelly?

00:57:53 - 00:57:55 | Speaker 3:

You know? I guess I did.

00:57:55 - 00:57:57 | Speaker 4:

How about me remembering Jennifer Connelly?

00:57:58 - 00:58:02 | Speaker 3:

Andrew, whatever ginkgo biloba you're on, it's working, my boy.

00:58:02 - 00:58:11 | Speaker 4:

I honestly had one of those days where I was like, I don't know if I'm going to get through the show today. I felt like that ass-draggy this morning, but here we are. Oh, no, man.

00:58:11 - 00:58:21 | Speaker 3:

You're like, honestly, you're crushing it. You remember Jennifer? I think I forgot that Jennifer Connelly was in that movie because I'm not a perv. I focus on Frank Whaley's character, Archangel.

00:58:21 - 00:58:30 | Speaker 4:

Right. I noticed that a woman actor is in a movie. And, God, get my head out of the gutter. Although she's attractive in that movie.

00:58:31 - 00:58:39 | Speaker 1:

Here I go once again with the email. Every week, I hope that it's from a female. No, man, it's not from a female.

00:58:40 - 00:59:13 | Speaker 4:

Real objectification day for me. Uh-oh. What? Uh-oh, SpaghettiOs. Oh, wrong. I'm playing the wrong music again. Should we cut this all out or just leave it in? Nah, leave it in. It's all content. That's actually on me, though. I was actually just thinking, like, what with the Jennifer Connelly and Amy Grant conversations today? I've really just. Wait, did I get in your head? No, now I'm suddenly like, man, I am a real, what's going on with me? So timely, too, my crushes. Yeah, well, you're going through puberty. and noticing women's bodies.

00:59:13 - 00:59:35 | Speaker 2:

The wrong way to roll You can't just listen to your soul Just remember that life is number one You can be having so much fun Just remember that life is much fun You can be nothing but one

00:59:35 - 00:59:59 | Speaker 4:

All right, Luke, I sent you some Blurs days. I want to make sure that you can receive them. All right, let me kick things off here with a message from Lauren in Tampa, Florida. That's two Laurens that I know of who listen to the show in Florida, by the way. This Lauren says, I want to wish a happy day of birth.

01:00:00 - 01:00:08 | Speaker 1:

To my third five, Cecilia Joan, a.k.a. CJ, was just born on Monday. What? Just born on Monday.

01:00:09 - 01:00:09 | Speaker 2:

Oh, my gosh.

01:00:09 - 01:00:24 | Speaker 1:

Day of birth. She can look forward to many days of TBTL playing in the background of night feedings and rocking chair snuggles. Happy Blur's Day to CJ, and congratulations to Lauren. Big time. Cute.

01:00:24 - 01:00:48 | Speaker 2:

we are honestly as far in terms of podcasts that are not you know about parenting i think we're one of the leading podcasts for people to nurse their children to yeah or to tend to their young children we hear that a lot that it's a good middle of the night the kid won't sleep listening

01:00:48 - 01:00:58 | Speaker 1:

experience because you got to stay awake you don't want something too calming because you're just gonna right or something too exciting right and so you just listen to us drone perfect

01:00:58 - 01:01:08 | Speaker 2:

what did chris say in his chris texted us last night and he said something about he was laughing about something that i said to describe our show and i don't actually remember

01:01:08 - 01:01:17 | Speaker 1:

saying that me neither i don't know what he's talking about it said something about like you were describing the show as lacking urgency right which is true yeah that's why i think it would be

01:01:17 - 01:01:35 | Speaker 2:

that's why i don't remember the context for that okay right because it's a true statement during each and every program, except when I'm reading up on the internet about... What was I reading earlier? Was that random thing that I googled? Oh, you were searching the Smaug study.

01:01:35 - 01:01:35 | Speaker 1:

Yes, exactly.

01:01:36 - 01:01:53 | Speaker 2:

Okay, sorry. I have one job, and that is to read half of these Blur's Day messages, and I'm messing up. Kristen says, I would like to wish a happy Blur's Day to my five. Henry, who is hitting the double digits and is going to be 10 years old.

01:01:53 - 01:02:10 | Speaker 1:

Aw, Henry. Now that you're 10, you've got to become a 10. You can't be a 5 anymore, Henry. Yeah, sorry, buddy. Jump on board. We don't make the rules. I mean, if talking about Amy Grant videos is not appealing to a 10-year-old in 2021, I give up. I give up. I'm out of tricks.

01:02:11 - 01:02:14 | Speaker 2:

Yeah. You're also now registered for the draft, Henry.

01:02:15 - 01:02:17 | Speaker 1:

Sorry. That's how it works. Oh, selective service.

01:02:17 - 01:02:30 | Speaker 2:

Kristen says, You are the smartest and sweetest kid I know. I couldn't love you more. Oh. Ah, indeed. Oh. Happy Blur's Day, Henry. I love that name, too, by the way. Yeah, me too.

01:02:34 - 01:03:02 | Speaker 1:

Andrew, a.k.a. the other Andrew, to his dad, Bruce, says, From watching Avatar to The Last Airbender to watching Come Play. That's a scary movie, right? My dad's done lots of things Like co-hosting a podcast And watching terrible movies with me But most importantly Hugging the dog too much Because I make him Anyway, power, rawr Sincerely, the other, Andrew

01:03:02 - 01:03:31 | Speaker 2:

If I'm, I could be wrong You know, Andrew is a I'm sure we have a few listeners named Andrew Who are on the younger side And probably a few listeners named Bruce But I'm wondering if this is our friend The one time Bruce in Lake Stevens Now Bruce in Alabama And that would mean Andrew, this Andrew, the other Andrew Has been, has had his His voice played on this show many times Which drop is his? Do you have it there? I don't have it here

01:03:31 - 01:03:33 | Speaker 1:

But I know we have played him before

01:03:33 - 01:03:35 | Speaker 2:

And his brother I think is the prom baby

01:03:35 - 01:03:38 | Speaker 1:

I believe so, yeah, long long time Friends of the show

01:03:38 - 01:03:43 | Speaker 2:

I love to think of TBTL inspiring people To have coitus

01:03:43 - 01:04:33 | Speaker 1:

All the Amy Grant talk Chad in Northeast Minneapolis All revved up Says happy 51st blurs to my wife And longest running co-bro? Question mark Maybe co-babe Is that a thing? Anyway Happy blurs day to Amy Says Chad The highlight of her 50th year on the planet May well have been seeing her pandrumic video in the tbtl talent show remember drums luke oh the drum solo called pandrum so good that was awesome right yes so uh happy blurs day to amy not sure anything in 2021 will match that moment of exhilarated joy but i hope we can at least get close happy blurs day amy learn a new instrument

01:04:33 - 01:04:59 | Speaker 2:

amy because we're gonna have another tbtl-a-thon maybe we'll have another talent show uh tracy Nancy says, happy birthday in heaven to my beautiful and funny mom. Nancy, it's been two years without you here. But as I sit here on this sunny day, I'm reminded of all the amazing road trips we took together and all the times you made me laugh. Like that one time you scraped some salt off the ground in Death Valley.

01:05:00 - 01:05:02 | Speaker 1:

Took a lick and said it was tasty.

01:05:03 - 01:05:51 | Speaker 2:

You're not alone. Nancy was a beloved TBTL listener as well. Nancy actually came to my house, Andrew, when we did the show when I was moving from Seattle. And we did the show from my actual house because I figured it was safe since I wasn't going to live there anymore. As if the TBTL listeners pose any threat to me. But, you know, it just seemed like I wasn't going to get away with that based on whoever I was in a relationship with at that moment to just like literally have people over. But that was a really fun show. And Nancy was there. Nancy was a really incredible person, a teacher, and just a really special part of the TVTL community. So Tracy wanting to honor, as is now Tracy, but Tracy wanted to honor her mom, Nancy. Also, I would totally do that if I saw salt on the ground. Did you lick any of the salt flats?

01:05:51 - 01:05:59 | Speaker 1:

I did not. Genevieve took a little vial, though, and collected some salt from the salt flats, and it's now sitting on our little mantle.

01:05:59 - 01:06:23 | Speaker 2:

By the way, there's one more dazzling deet in Tracy's message, remembering her mom, and that is happy birthday to Susie B. That'd be my mom, Susie Burbank as well, who my mom would always remind me was born on the exact same day as her. So Nancy's birthday must have been February 24th. So Nancy, my mom, and my sister Hannah all have the same birthday.

01:06:23 - 01:06:32 | Speaker 1:

I don't want to ruin the moment but I just sort of feel like your mom and sister got pre-Blur's Days this year We'll call that next year's

01:06:32 - 01:06:43 | Speaker 2:

It's next year's message My mom will be devastated to hear that that she's not getting that like basically she's now used up next year's Blur's Days messages I'm just trying to create

01:06:43 - 01:06:46 | Speaker 1:

some boundaries here Luke that's all for the Blur's Days

01:06:46 - 01:07:22 | Speaker 2:

I'll call her and I'll say hey mom guess what we accidentally did your Blur's Day twice and she'll say who is this and then I'll say it's your son Luke and she'll say what's a podcast uh-huh what's a blurs day gotcha starts with what's a blurs day what's a podcast are you still DJ how do I find your show Luke Luke I've been on Facebook looking for your CBS Sunday morning radio program how do I find it I don't know mom literally turn on the radio you'll hear live wire hey when's live wire my dad tried to disagree with me the other day about when live wire's on and uh in Seattle I assume because I

01:07:22 - 01:07:26 | Speaker 1:

assume you don't know the schedule for every radio station no i don't but i do know seattle

01:07:26 - 01:07:43 | Speaker 2:

yeah it's noon in seattle it's kind of a big deal in my life just kidding so i my dad said like oh yeah i think we caught live wire the other day and and he said uh when is it on again he said it's like three or something right i said no in seattle it's on at noon he goes yeah that sounds

01:07:43 - 01:07:47 | Speaker 1:

right and i was like yeah because it is right oh he didn't really disagree he just said well i'm

01:07:47 - 01:08:13 | Speaker 2:

I'm paraphrasing. It felt to me more like – it felt like more of an aggressive statement from old Walt B. Well, he's so aggressive in his manner all the time. Known for his – How can you tell? He's commonly known for his aggressiveness. Anyway, happy Blur's Day, Nancy. We remember you very fondly on this program. Tracy, thanks for reaching out. I'm on the KOW website right now.

01:08:14 - 01:08:14 | Speaker 1:

Let's see.

01:08:15 - 01:08:19 | Speaker 2:

I mean, some part of you think it's maybe not on at noon because, by the way, they could have moved it and I wouldn't know.

01:08:19 - 01:08:36 | Speaker 1:

I just think it would be awesome if they did move it and this is how you're finding out. I just think it would be good content. But Livewire does appear to be on at noon on Saturdays. But can you tell me what's on at noon on Sundays?

01:08:36 - 01:08:47 | Speaker 2:

Noon on Sundays I am going to Go with the educated guess that it is Hidden Brain With Shankar Vedantham

01:08:47 - 01:08:56 | Speaker 1:

It is Ask Me Another Luke So see, you don't know everything That's very true Like you were claiming Yeah, alright, let's wrap this up

01:08:56 - 01:09:03 | Speaker 2:

As I have said on the show I am the world's foremost authority On the times that Ask Me Another Heirs

01:09:03 - 01:09:54 | Speaker 1:

I know, I know All right, Josh says, this is our final Blur's Day. Josh says, I'd like to wish a very happy Blur's Day to my wife, Karen. She is funny, smart, caring, and beautiful, and perhaps most importantly, a loyal 10 and... Most importantly, 100%. Spotless listener. So loyal in the fact that just two weeks ago, she gave blurth to our first five, Elliot. What? Two blurths. Elliot, welcome to the world. Growing the audience one member at a time She's the longest running co-bro of my life And I love her more every damn day He didn't say damn, but I added it for emphasis Happy Blur's Day, Karen Congratulations to you both What a Cute What a blessed Blur's Day's today That's it That's adorable I'd love to hear it

01:09:54 - 01:09:59 | Speaker 2:

Also, please, be fruitful and multiply, TBChel listeners Because that's the only way we're going to grow this audience

01:10:00 - 01:10:10 | Speaker 1:

is if you literally grow your families and force your children to listen to it. And then someday when they're adults, they'll be like, that reminds me of being in the back of the car. And then they'll listen. Just that's our growth strategy.

01:10:11 - 01:10:16 | Speaker 2:

Put them all, let's lock them all in a fries and abandoned empty fries and blast.

01:10:16 - 01:10:18 | Speaker 1:

Like the classic Frank Whaley movie.

01:10:18 - 01:10:34 | Speaker 2:

Right, exactly. All right. It is time to say goodbye here, Luke. I'm trying to figure out what we should listen to. Should we listen to some Glenn Fry? Oh, sure. Smuggler's Blues. Okay, good. I was going to say, I don't know any Glenn.

01:10:34 - 01:10:39 | Speaker 1:

I know exactly one Glenn Frey song, and it's Smuggler's Blues.

01:10:39 - 01:10:41 | Speaker 2:

It doesn't sound like a song I would like. That's the problem.

01:10:42 - 01:10:47 | Speaker 1:

I think he's a drug runner in the video. Amy Grant's in it, by the way. Okay, right, right.

01:10:47 - 01:10:49 | Speaker 2:

I mean, that makes sense. Or maybe a bootlegger?

01:10:50 - 01:11:02 | Speaker 1:

Maybe that's what it is. He has the Smuggler's Blues. I think he gets pulled over at some point. He's stressing because he's riding dirty. and um you know that's the this is the one glenn fry song i know so that's what we're gonna hear

01:11:02 - 01:11:06 | Speaker 2:

on the way out well you know he also apparently does the heat is on from the beverly hills cop

01:11:06 - 01:11:34 | Speaker 1:

soundtrack how about that it's on the street let's do that he is on that okay it's a that's a that's a that's a banger i i am gonna have to go listen to the smuggler's blues now just to refresh to re or re uh uh what would you say scratch that itch to scratch that itch to reacquaint myself with it? Well, I don't want to leave you itchy. No, that's okay. I can listen to Smuggler's Blues on my own time. I think the listeners will get more enjoyment out of hearing the H's O. Luke, the listeners

01:11:34 - 01:11:38 | Speaker 2:

aren't paying you to listen to Smuggler's Blues on their time.

01:11:38 - 01:12:06 | Speaker 1:

That's right. Okay? Do that on your personal time, Burb. I just had a moment of realizing what a ludicrous job this is. Thanks, everyone. We appreciate you for letting us do it. Alright. That's going to do it for our show. I'll be back here tomorrow. I'll probably know what the uh what the uh show number we're on is but let's not only somebody would help us with that yeah can someone send me an email reminding me to refer to the email that says

01:12:06 - 01:12:16 | Speaker 2:

what episode we're on please you're gonna be so you're gonna that's gonna happen you're gonna that's a hundred that joke when you just have more emails to delete all right thanks for listening

01:12:16 - 01:12:22 | Speaker 1:

we'll see you tomorrow until then uh stay safe take care of each other mask up and please remember We're no mountain too tall. And good luck to all.

01:12:22 - 01:12:57 | Speaker 3:

The pressure's high Just to stay alive Cause the heat is on Woo! Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh Caught up in the action I've been looking out for you Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh Tell me, can you feel it? Tell me, can you feel it? Tell me, do you feel it? The heat is on. The heat is on.

01:12:58 - 01:13:06 | Unknown:

The heat is on. The world's on the street. The heat is on.

01:13:06 - 01:13:08 | Speaker 3:

Power out.
