farm to do some farming uh stuff specifically coming up in fall they do like a big pumpkin patch and stuff um and so she's interviewing there her interview was at 12 30 uh not too much of a look behind the curtain but it is 12 40 so you notice that i when i said to andrew i didn't say

to the listeners about what time of day it is it's an evergreen uh way to introduce greeting Sure. And so she dropped me off at a place called Crema, which was a coffee shop. I thought, oh, I'll get a coffee. I'll sort of meander around, read my book a little bit, and then head over to the old, to the Nest Broadcast Center. And it turns out there are two Cremas in downtown Portland. One of them was about a mile and a half away, and that was the one that I got dropped off at. Are you guys on a nice brisk walk?

I'm just glad you got some steps in, because I know you've been leading a very sedentary lifestyle.

How many miles a day are you running these days?

It's about, I try to do about 8 to 10 a day. But I am trying to take a day, at least one day off a week and doing like no running. Because apparently that's, it's good for your muscles to kind of heal a little bit.

Yeah, let's, yeah, there's a McGruff song about that actually. Yeah, I think so. It's on the B side of that tape and it's take one day a week off from running.

I've been letting my muscles heal for about 15 years now. They're about ready for, tell me when they're ready for exercising.

Actually, I loved every minute of your podcast on Loader and am absolutely delighted to be remembered in that way. In fact, I haven't stopped laughing since a friend of mine called my attention to it. She's a big fan of TBTL and sent it to me once she realized who you were talking about. I do remember you somewhat, David, though it's been quite a while. I think, and of course, you had some real last name. You had some real last name and weren't going by From the Basement at the time. Your commentary on the podcast was brilliant. And I'm retiring soon. So go ahead and read The Cimmerillion several more times, and we'll talk.

I want to mention, though, I need to be accurate. She says JK, of course, but I did enjoy it. So I think she's JK-ing about handing off the baton of teaching the loader class at the UW. There's probably some sort of more formal process than just getting a cup of coffee. Although that's a very loader way to pass that off. Like, you know, Rob and Stacey has got her shawl on, and she's on a windy hill. and she hands you a bluff somewhere, real Gandalf-y, and then she's handing you the syllabus.

We're trying to get Chris Hayes to say weird stuff on his TV show and trying to get Robin Stacy to teach weird stuff at her class at the UW.

Anyway, that is damn delightful. I want to, I mean, maybe I don't want to know, but I like fantasizing about how this made its way to your former professor because this isn't even a podcast. I mean it sounded like you said you were sort of you know you were probably I mean, you're a bright person and you take your studies seriously. So I'm sure you got an A in the class. But, like, I just – I honestly feel like there is nothing about the loader world that you don't know about. Were there people in the class that actually knew more than you? Yeah.

I mean, aside from the professor? Yes, there were. The weird thing is most of those students didn't have a podcast to, like, come on and talk about it. A lot of them – you would be surprised to hear not the most, like, outgoing. Sure. On radio shows And things like that So I think I'm just the most vocal Of all of the smarties in that class

You're a double threat You're a person who both nerds out hard on stuff But is also comfortable In this kind of public space To the degree this is a public space So you're saying there were other folks in that class Who their knowledge may have gone deeper But the chances of hearing them on a podcast Are maybe a little bit less Yeah, certainly Yeah, well, Rob and Stacey Thank you for checking in And we hope that you become a listener That's the other way that we grow the audience, is by kind of name-checking people, but then not completely remembering their names. And then that's how we get them.

And then burying it in three hours of content that you should listen to.

I didn't even think, like, hardcore listeners were going to listen to the rip track. And we've got people who have literally never heard of TBTL who are enduring it. Unless their friend, like, pointed them to the part of the show where they were mentioned, which I always find mildly offensive. Like when people, not so much even with a TBTL, but more with Livewire. So sometimes we'll do an interview with someone, and it'll be, I don't know, 20 minutes into the show. And then they'll be nice enough to, like, send it out on their social. And they'll be like, oh, I had a really great time being on this show, Livewire. The part with me starts at 20 in. And I'm like, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, the good stuff's at the top. Exactly. Just like our tow truck driver did that, remember? Oh, yeah. He was promoting TBTL, which is good on him. Nobody else is. But he did post to his Facebook page Exactly the time stamps Where he is mentioned On the podcast

That's exactly what I'm talking about This is a guy who's driving a tow truck In the absolute desolation That is the Arizona desert You have time to listen to the whole show My friend

As do the people that are on your Facebook page You know, I think I mentioned this to you, Andrew But the very nice owner of the Delica Asked me to write a review Oh yeah On the website How do I write a review that's both glowing But also truthful Because it was an amazing van We had a great time It also did break down in the desolation of the Arizona desert

I would I would not ever encourage somebody being dishonest But in this case I would really focus on the customer service, for lack of a better word. Like, you know, the people we rented it from were really amazing. And while we found ourselves in a situation, even getting out of that situation, they made it as easy as possible on us. I mean, Luke, you had to deal with all of that, but that's my understanding that it could have been just so bad in so many ways. And thanks to them for, you know, helping us out of some jams. So, I don't know, maybe you can avoid the part about us breaking down in the desert, but really just focus on what a great experience it was, you know, before that happened.

want me to write it because i'm going to come in hot i only write negative yelp reviews do you know that we now have a little plaque do you remember i won't tell the whole story but one time jenevieve and i were uh for christmas visiting her folks in atlanta and we were at the atlanta airport trying to get the car that we had reserved at a rental place and they were out of cars this is well before the pandemic and everything it was just like bad service all around just classically the seinfeld bit yeah i mean it really has come to life and genevieve in a moment of just frustration impotent frustration just fine ends the conversation by saying well you're getting the yelp review of a lifetime her brother um just recently gifted us with a cross stitch of that of a cute little car that says you're getting the yelp review of a lifetime and it's the frame on our wall right outside my door oh that's beautiful that's not even close though to

how embarrassingly i behaved re a rental car remember when i was trying to go i was trying to rent a car from uh it was like enterprise and it was one of those things where they just the computer had not prioritized enough cars to be at this location it was actually just up the street from you was in the roosevelt neighborhood of washington and i go in uh and the the young person working there he's just totally overwhelmed there's just a waiting room full of furious people because everyone's a friday everybody was getting these cars to go on their weekend trip somewhere and there were like no cars at this location and so i had i was in a i had taken an uber to this place and so i went back and i'm sitting in the back of the uber and i called enterprise and the person answers the phone and i and i start telling them about how frustrated i am about this because there are no cars and i said and this kid who's running this place he's just in over his head has no idea what he's doing and uh he said uh sir i am that kid it had routed me it was not an 800 number it was just the enterprise i was he said and he looked out the window i can see that you're

in that uber it's like a nightmare it's like a stress dream like the one time you know how hard

it is to actually get a hold of a human being at the physical location of the thing i mean that's one of the real frustrations of modern life is you're trying to just talk to the person who works at the physical place that you're about to go to whether it's a haircut whether it's a rental car whatever everything needs to be routed now to an 800 number i think it all has to do with you know just trying to um like the apple store is an example the apple store is crazy these days you have to like it's all app-based you can't maybe it's changed maybe it will change when the pandemic's fully over but you can't just walk into the apple store and go hi can you help me with this or can i buy this and i feel like that was even before the pandemic it was starting to

become that way pizza hut i ended up talking i was trying to order pizza from pizza hut in seattle and ended up talking to somebody in dallas wow because i'm in a that's how you out yeah pizza hut out andrewed me i am in soviet russia exactly i care i think i i don't know what happened i just went online or i maybe i made a phone call to the local place ordered the pizza and then all of a sudden i was getting phone calls from texas and it was because like i live in an area between pizza huts they could not deliver to me but they couldn't handle it on the local level i was dealing with

somebody in the lone star state to be honest with you doing the online stuff and using app-based things is probably simpler but i am just in that generation where it still feels inconvenient to me i think if i like if you know i would rather call a place and like put my order in over the phone uh even though i'm sure that i'm sure it's faster and i probably will get a better like they'll have it all printed out there exactly what i want you know if it's a pizza or whatever it is but something about having to go through the internet to do stuff still feels to me like it's a hassle

I'm surprised. coming from you um because you do so much e-commerce uh which sounds like a joke but i was being serious um luke i actually i know we have to go to a break but i actually have a very uh important question i've been meaning to ask you regarding car rentals what in the hell is going on with that fee that they were charging you the 200 claiming that you smoked in a car that

you most certainly did not smoke in it was 250 okay sorry it's going and uh i am happy to report that it did actually get removed eventually from my CBS corporate Amex. I don't know if you happened to catch that episode, Dave. No, I did. I was furious. I mean, this is apparently you put in your like you ran a reverse split. Your last three miles were like sub five minutes because you were so angry. I guess this is a thing that's happening, though. We got some emails from people and even a link to a story. I think it might have been in the L.A. Times about basically like rental car companies. because a lot of them are hurting financially because of the pandemic have started just finding any way they can to run up extra charges on people there was this sorry this is a bit gruesome but it was the story that was in the la times there was somebody who had a story of finding a used condom in their car which they actually like their nephew noticed like their little baby they were driving their baby nephew somewhere and he was like auntie what's that and um and somehow in all of this this woman she called uh the company and she complained as you you uh would and then they were going to give her some kind of small discount on the rental but then when she so she like brings the car back it's now condom free and uh there they said okay we're going to give you a hundred bucks off or whatever it was and then as she's on her way to the airport she gets a notification on her phone that they've charged her for smoking in the car.

Oh, my God.

Basically as a way of trying to recoup the discount they'd given her for the fact that she found a used condom.

Did she even get to keep the condom?

So anyway, that kind of stuff is going on all the time. And a lot of people were writing into this consumer reporter who was writing this piece. A lot of people report being charged for smoking in a car even though they're non-smokers and it's like infuriating it's impossible to prove i mean how do you disprove a negative right like how do you prove that you didn't do something you didn't smoke

in a car if it smells like cigarette smoke well in your case you tell them in advance and you

complain about it yet they still i mean that's why i mean the only thing i could have done i guess is called the pizza hut in dallas yeah and talk to them like i guess there was another number i was supposed to call something else happened the other day i had to rent another car and i forget what it was oh you know what it was it was um when when uh uh i was coming up my life is such a blur sometimes anyway i was somewhere renting a car and what i noticed was oh it was in napa it had like a the back of it was a subaru and there was like a kind of a it's hard to explain but basically like this mechanism where you can pull a screen like a screen out that covers the back area so if you have stuff in there it's you can you can kind of cover it up or it can be open Anyway, that thing was just in the back of the Subaru, and when I tried to put it in its place and pull the little screen out, it was all jammed up. It didn't work. And I was filled with a panic that I was going to get charged. In fact, I should check my account because it's possible they've charged me for breaking that thing out even though it was broken. But this is how lazy I am. I still didn't call customer service. Yeah.

the first matchup um if you will remember one of the first songs is uh lord the song is solar power

that's making that that's now i've noticed that thing showing up on tiktok yes it's definitely

making the rounds on the tiki talk um and that went up against um this song by the glass animals called heat wave also very summer centric um so this was kind of two clash of the titans type of matchups um which is why i kind of matched them up i wanted it to be like a big you know an all-out brawl for them um and it was it was actually very close

And it had overall the most votes out of any of the selections. And so the winner with 52% of the votes was Solar Power. Whoa.

Nice. It feels like summer, man. It really does. Yeah, it really does. It really feels like summer.

I probably said something along the lines of this when we first played this song. But, you know, I guess this really shows Lorde is not just some sort of one-hit wonder. He's a very talented person, you know? Because I could have seen Royals just being this kind of, like, quirky thing that, you know, was a big hit. And you're very young when you make it. And then we kind of never hear from you again. But this would very much appear to be a solid career for old Lorde. Yeah.

Yes, definitely. And this is off of an album that is going to be coming out very soon, which I'm sure is going to be huge. I know she had another album after the one where Royals was out. It had that song Green Light on it, which I don't know if anyone remembers. It was a big one. She seems to come out with a huge hit in every album that she comes out with. So obviously a huge talent and moving on to the next round.

I mean, this will obviously, if she manages to win song in the summer, that'll be probably the biggest feather in her cap. I would imagine. Isn't this true, by the way? And I'm sure this has come up multiple times on the show. I apologize for my faulty memory. But I was blown away to find out that that song, Royals, was actually written about George Brett, the Kansas City Royal. Wait, what? Do you guys know this? No, what? Yeah.

No, but like – I mean just there's – I'm trying to just gently say that that song Butter lyrically is a little silly to me without alienating our BTS stance.

It feels like you're watching a Disney Channel movie about the greatest boy band of all time, and this is their song, basically.

Well put. Would you like to be the new host of TBTL? Yes, I've been waiting for this opportunity for you. That is so much better put. I mean, it just – because I had heard – I mean, there's so much hype around BTS, and they're so internationally popular. And, like, the worst thing you can do right now is say something that's read as critical of BTS, like on Twitter or something. They will come for you, right? Yes. They will come to your house. They criticize butter, butter, butter. But like when I finally watched the video, I mean, the song is a bit catchy, but I was like, yeah, it seems like a parody of a boy band. And I love that people enjoy it and that it's bringing joy to people's lives. And everyone should enjoy BTS if they enjoy them. But I just was kind of struck by like, wow, I can't believe this is still working in 2021. These are like sort of very made up, very like, you know, television ready young men of a certain age singing a song that sounds like an algorithm wrote it. Like, you know, it just I was it was I don't know what I was expecting, but it was just interesting to me that it's still working in 2020.

I voted for I guess it's not working enough.

So not only am I surprised that Remy Wolfe lost, but that it was kind of a blowout. Yeah, it was.

I wonder if it's also just because I've been hyping Michelle Zahner so much on the show. Oh, true. Because, like, she was on Livewire, and that book she wrote, Crying in H Mart, is really good. I think it's already been optioned for a film. Oh, nice.

By the way, I saw on an Instagram post of Addie, she had that song. Adelaide had that song or that book. book in some photo of hers, and I was like, oh, I wonder if you got that from your dad.

You know, I think that she might have bought that on her, or maybe I gave it to her. Who can remember? I'm starting to sign, when I give these books away now, I'm starting to sign them for people. Oh, wow. Even though I didn't write them.

It's just like my weird thing that I'm starting to do. You signed the cover. I read most of this. I read an interview. How dare you, David? I didn't like the end. Did you read that skywriting over the Willamette? I just actually, when we're done here, in just a few minutes, I am actually going to switch over to doing a Livewire interview with a writer named Daisy Hernandez, who has a really fascinating book called The Kissing Bug Disease about this very kind of medically mysterious. It's not medically mysterious. It's not particularly well-researched here in the U.S., but this parasite you can get from something called a kissing bug and it's a fascinating memoir and science book. And I read all of it. Well, I read half of it and I listened to half of it. What did we decide on that? Does that count?

Yeah, that counts. If you listen to a book, I wish.

Yeah, as long as you're like attentively listening to it.

Actively listening. I went strong a while back saying that like, hey, if you listen to a book, say you listen to a book. If you read a book, say you read a book. And a lot of people said that's pretty ableist language because there's all kinds of people. And like I got a lot of feedback on it. I never brought it up on the show. It was one of those things where when I think about this all the time, because when I first got that feedback and nobody was like rude about it, it was all very nice people saying, hey, Andrew, just so you know, like it's kind of ableist. And I like I did this. I did just argumentative acrobatics in my head. I didn't.

with anybody online about it but it's one of those things where i just rejected i'm like well words have meanings and like if there's a stigma around it like just change the stigma don't change the meaning of the words read versus listen but it's like one of those things where the more i thought about it and it took me like several days i'm like shit i'm just wrong on this like could a blind person not be well read of course a blind person well right but here's my question

and like lord knows there's no re like there's no reason to relitigate this but a person who is blind would have you know 30 years ago read things in braille right right that's another example i guess so there is a there's a form of reading that is available to people who are visually impaired in some way that isn't listening to a book on tape i don't have all of the art like

a lot of people wrote in again very kindly and independent and just like saying hey i heard you say that just so you know this is a conversation that's going on in the culture and like here's a bunch of reasons why and i got to say the reasons were really compelling i can't remember if the well-read version that i just threw out there is something that i came up with or if that was one that was sent to me but a bunch of other people oh well you know there's a lot of analogies like if you have a friend who uses a wheelchair you would still say do you want to go for a walk you know what i mean there's a lot of language that we just we use in that way and sure to be kind of pedantic and say well which i was being i'm not saying you are luke but i went on this little weird petty rant about like if and my whole thing by the way was based on an a colleague of mine from a long long long time ago who was bragging about how many books he had read in the summer but then it was clear that he was talking about listening to them on his commute and i just had kind of a bug up my ass about that but also like why are you bragging about how many books

you're reading too it's just like not a great look i will tell you that uh boy traffic is back baby in portland yeah like seriously like so bad it is noticeable and so i have started to uh make use of that time by like if there's a book that i'm working on for livewire i'll kind of jump between reading it uh you know in the looking at the words on the page kind of style of reading and then listening to it in the car and it's actually great it made it's made me much less annoyed at traffic because i'm like well you've got three more chapters done yeah yeah exactly i like to think that people feel the same way about tbtl hey you know maybe that'll help drive some numbers for us the fact that you know in a lot of places sort of quote-unquote normal life is starting again and commutes are back and this could be a real boon time for you know i've been talking a lot on the show about how there's sort of a lot of demand and not enough supply just about a lot of things uh and um the tbgl might be the only thing where there's more supply than

demand or podcasts in general yes i saw somebody on twitter said uh i don't know who needs to hear

this i mean i don't know how they phrased it but they said basically uh your you know your chatty podcast needs an editor or your podcast where you chat with your friend needs an edit they weren't saying it to me they were just saying generally and of course it's very like near and dear to my heart what we do here but i also just felt like wtf w wtf could that be a show title i was like wtf daniel kibblesmith i think was the uh the person who tweeted it i was like it doesn't need an editor because it's a different kind of show it's not the daily it's not this american life and i mean of course i'm just overly defensive about tbtl but it was to me it was like i can't Think of a good analogy but it's like telling people who do These kinds of rambly shows they need to ramble less Is like no that's what the show Is right and there are other shows that Have editors and are much tighter And and that's a great and I Listen to a lot of those shows and those shows are awesome But that's I don't know it's like saying hey I don't need to hear this but your cheese pizza It needs less cheese right it's Like no that's what we do we sell cheese Pizza the cheese is us talking About nothing for hours a day here's

The deal though and you know me I'm not somebody Who like pats us on the back a lot but like there are shows out there who do this style of podcasting but probably aren't as good there are shows where co-hosts can't remember anybody's name they dedicate tons of time to dream talk I mean people just write in about something called blur there's a lot of shit out there and so that tweeter was probably referring to those types

of shows well okay you know I mean I know you're sort of half joking and But I will say that the weird thing about the show, about TBTL, is as much as we like to kind of make fun of ourselves and talk about the show kind of in a critical way, we are like legit radio professionals who actually, you know, we're doing this as kind of a radio job for a long time. And people would be – I think the average person would be surprised at actually how much thought goes into it because it is totally off the cuff. But it also is something that we're concentrating on when we're doing it and thinking pretty hard about like, hey, what is the most interesting way for us to do this in our own weird, demented way? And so maybe he was referring to – it's not as easy as people would think to flip the microphone on and just kind of start talking. And so maybe there are some shows like this.

that need an editor, just not this show. This show is perfect. But if you do, I can be that editor. Is this what we're going out with? I don't know. It just seemed like a good time to bring this back. Can you quickly run through the eight songs that are still happening?

number two uh are you guys by the way i know we're trying to go faster but do you guys have opinions on these are we trying to not give our opinions because we don't want to be we don't

influence the vote it's hard because i my opinion is based on how um much how many submissions i got for oh yeah so i'm not i'm not trying to put my finger on the on the pulse but um i will say the the lord and the little nas x one that is a huge matchup just because both of those songs I think got the most submissions. Freedom got also one of the most submissions. And then Sunny in the Making, it seems like Steady Holiday is a big hit with the listeners.

I don't want to pressure the listeners, but the very future of me becoming best friends with John Batiste rests on that song going pretty far in this competition. So just do what you will with that information.

The third matchup is Kiss Me More, Doja Cat versus Mango by Kamau. and then the final matchup is Lilacs by Waxahachie versus Japanese Breakfast, Be Sweet. So that's also a difficult one.
