Shall we play a game? Come on honey, let's play the match game

00:00:14 - 00:00:43 | Speaker 1:

Ah, yeah! Summer game number... Summer game number 8 Actually, maybe summer game number 9 It's a Thursday as this is being released. Hi, everybody. Welcome to the TBTL Summer Games. I'm Luke right over there, my friend Andrew. That's right. This is coming out on a Thursday. We're down. This is the penultimate summer game, right? I mean, that's the important thing.

00:00:43 - 00:00:58 | Speaker 2:

Yes. The question is, will today's game be so good that it actually bleeds into tomorrow's show as well? Is this actually the final game we play over two shows, or is it the penultimate game? Only time will tell

00:00:58 - 00:01:48 | Speaker 1:

I don't know if that's the dynamic You want to establish at the top of the show Because if we don't end up using this tomorrow It means that J-Dog's suggestion was Medium Medium minus Yeah J-Dog I used to romp with him You know what I mean Usually what happens is if we're playing a game We're having so much fun Or we're going so slowly That we're like we've got to carry this over Till tomorrow Now that expectation has been set So if this only takes one Summer game day This only takes one episode of the show These by the way it'd be very weird if you were just joining us For the very first time on this Thursday But this is our little Annual summer break where we pre-record A bunch of shows and then I get to take a little time off Andrew gets to Continue Swaddling

00:01:48 - 00:01:58 | Speaker 2:

Swaddling my cat which I'm doing right now Because it's the afternoon He's done with his morning nap, and if I don't hold him, if I don't give him what I call a thunder shirt, he will start yelping into the microphone.

00:01:58 - 00:02:02 | Speaker 1:

Have you considered getting him an actual thunder shirt? Do they make those for cats?

00:02:03 - 00:02:17 | Speaker 2:

I don't know if they make them for cats. I think he just wants affection. I call the move the thunder shirt. I call my snuggle move the thunder shirt, but I don't think he actually wants a thunder shirt. I'd be worried about it breaking his little bones at this point.

00:02:18 - 00:03:03 | Speaker 1:

I'm just saying, like, see, this is the difference between you and me. By the way, I sounded a little off at the beginning of the show. It's because I hadn't turned my chair around. And as the people who aren't joining us for the first time today know, that's when you know it's summer games time. Because we're recording these after we've already recorded our normal show on a random whatever day it might be. And so I sit in my chair the normal way for our show. And then I turn it around backwards and I lean on the backrest like in a cool guy fashion. And that's when it's summer game time. And I hadn't been doing that at the beginning of this recording, which is why I was a little all over the map. I didn't know what what exact episode we were on. I've already, I think, continued my feud with J-Dog saying that this game that he suggested may be only medium minus.

00:03:03 - 00:03:14 | Speaker 2:

I'm actually I don't think that's the dynamic, though. I think even if we just do this for one show, it's because it was just so whiz bang that we got through it all. Like, I don't see any I don't see any negative side here.

00:03:15 - 00:03:49 | Speaker 1:

What I see is this very likely going long, and the reason is because you can read the email from our friend J-Dog Hauser, but this involves lots of tape from both of us, which I think is going to spur lots of conversation. And so I think we may have to do an extra week of Summer Games. Would you – I mean, I don't know. APM hasn't said we can't do that. Could we just record – we have to record today's episode and tomorrow's episode, and then the plan was to be done. But should we just throw an extra five on the back of that and just do three weeks of summer games? I would agree to those terms right now, by the way.

00:03:49 - 00:04:39 | Speaker 2:

I love summer games. Like, I know that you're not asking for a serious or overly earnest answer here. But I love the playing of the games. Weirdly, Luke. And I love the not coming into work. Well, I was going to say, even like if we continued the summer games but they weren't prerecorded, for those people, And I don't think there are many of them, but for that percentage of our audience that does not enjoy the summer games, I don't think it's because we're playing games. It's just that the idea that we're prerecorded and so we're messing with the space-time continuum somehow interferes with their enjoyment of the ongoing daily rambles that are totally meaningless but at least of the moment that is TBTL, which is something that I can kind of associate with, I think. Although, I honestly think the Summer Games are some of our best damn shows.

00:04:40 - 00:04:48 | Speaker 1:

I'll tell you what they're doing over there in Howard Stern land right now. They're taking all of July and all of August off.

00:04:48 - 00:04:52 | Speaker 2:

Yeah, and they're probably, like, running interviews with Anthony Kiedis from, like, 2002 or something.

00:04:53 - 00:05:43 | Speaker 1:

What they're doing is Howard gets the time off, as does Robin, but the staff still has to. It's funny because, Andrew, it doesn't sound unlike stuff that we've done at times to try to generate content but not have to be here, which is, like, they're doing all these special shows and theme shows and, like, but it's all being hosted by the staff talking about, oh, greatest this in Stern Show history or this is the best of whatever or Stern Show 101, you know, sort of like a this day in TVTL history type of deal. so they're they're still making shows but it's like the two main straws that stir the drink are not going to be there so it's going to be a little bit different but anyway i'm just saying to the listeners who and again it's a very short list maybe five total the listeners that don't love the summer games uh you know we could be taking two months off so yeah i mean the blessing

00:05:43 - 00:06:06 | Speaker 2:

i think what i think what if we've made any mistakes at all it's that we didn't even try to fake it we've been too honest too transparent like do you think in any universe that you and i would be able to record two weeks of shows game related or otherwise without first of all telling on ourselves and even if we didn't tell on ourselves could we somehow sneak it by the audience

00:06:06 - 00:06:37 | Speaker 1:

even if we were really disciplined we couldn't do two minutes of that i agree if you and i had said if we sat down before the first summer games recording and we said okay this is a fun thing But some of the listeners are a little bit less jazzed Because they know that this is all in the can So let's just pretend Like it's the day Like today is Thursday July 29th as we're releasing this Let's just pretend it's Thursday, July 29th And it's definitely not mentioned That this is pre-taped Within the first two minutes we would mention it was pre-taped

00:06:37 - 00:06:54 | Speaker 2:

Let's try from this point forward For tomorrow No, for tomorrow and for the rest of the show Let's pretend that it is actually we're recording this the day of oh my gosh first of all can you believe what Biden did and of course

00:06:54 - 00:06:55 | Speaker 1:

that great thing that he did

00:06:55 - 00:07:04 | Speaker 2:

yeah that was that was that was amazing but anyway yeah so other topical things too

00:07:04 - 00:07:09 | Speaker 1:

I wish that could be a show title so other topical things too

00:07:09 - 00:07:12 | Speaker 2:

maybe it could be I'll write it down why not

00:07:12 - 00:07:40 | Speaker 1:

alright how about gosh tell you what every time the mariners collapse here in late july usually culminating at around today july 29th andrew every time it happens it's weirdly surprising to me and you think it wouldn't be because it's been going on for my whole you know adult lifetime and yet it's still it shocked me that they've been losing as many games as they have leading up to today july 29th

00:07:40 - 00:07:49 | Speaker 2:

it is strange and it's funny you know i thought that they might like dfa justice sheffield but but they literally sent him to a farm, which is not the farm system.

00:07:49 - 00:07:55 | Speaker 1:

To be with other pitchers who have bad control so he can be happy and play with other pitchers like that.

00:07:55 - 00:07:59 | Speaker 2:

Exactly. So that was sort of interesting. Yeah, that was sort of interesting.

00:07:59 - 00:08:01 | Speaker 1:

Anyway, topical content.

00:08:01 - 00:08:11 | Speaker 2:

And other topical things, too. And other topical content. Here, let me actually read Jonathan, a.k.a. J-Dog's email. How did you come up with that name again?

00:08:12 - 00:08:20 | Speaker 1:

J-Dog for Jonathan? I'm kind of a – I have a little bit of a knack for giving people nicknames. Yeah, and so that just came to you.

00:08:20 - 00:08:21 | Speaker 2:

You weren't like – It did.

00:08:21 - 00:08:28 | Speaker 1:

I was like, okay, Jonathan – what's the first letter of the first name? It's J.

00:08:28 - 00:08:30 | Speaker 2:

Oh, see, I didn't make that connection.

00:08:30 - 00:08:48 | Speaker 1:

Jonathan starts with J, so does J-Dawg. I was spelling it J-A-Y-Dawg. But then does that mean that Jonathan's partner, Anna, is A-Dawg? Is it J-Dawg and A-Dawg? I think so. Yeah. I just made that one up. You heard it. You were here, you were witnessing this at the sort of moment of creation. I just came up with A-Dog as well.

00:08:48 - 00:09:01 | Speaker 2:

You know, some people call me A-Dubs. One kid did, one time? Actually, yeah, one kid named Pauly. Actually, A-Dubs is a good nickname for you. You know, A-W is my nickname, so he calls me A-Dubs. Hey, A-Dubs. Yeah, Andrew.

00:09:01 - 00:09:12 | Speaker 1:

I'm starting to understand why the listeners find these shows annoying, because you know what's going to happen? It has nothing to do with time. You know what's going to happen tomorrow, Andrew? You're going to bring it up. Which is in the past, by the way, when people hear this?

00:09:12 - 00:09:23 | Speaker 2:

We've already done that with the topic that was first brought up. What was the story? We loved it. It was first brought up in the Summer Games, and we liked it so much that you brought it. Oh, the recycling bowling ball story.

00:09:24 - 00:09:34 | Speaker 1:

So now, when this is released today, July 29th, which is what day it is, Andrew, in the distant past of the show, they will have heard me introduce you as A-Dub.

00:09:34 - 00:09:40 | Speaker 2:

Hey, Luke, what show number is it? Since we're doing this live today, could you remind me what the show number is since we're doing this day of?

00:09:40 - 00:09:45 | Speaker 1:

Yeah, it's 3,397.

00:09:45 - 00:09:47 | Speaker 2:

And go F yourself, Andrew.

00:09:48 - 00:09:55 | Speaker 1:

Yeah, you know what? If you take those numbers I just said and you correspond them to the letters of the alphabet, it says go F yourself, Ado.

00:09:56 - 00:10:44 | Speaker 2:

And you don't believe in a numerological God. All right. And you don't believe. I believe in the Zodiac Killer. All right. Let's do this. Can we actually take our break just so that we – because we're at about the 10-minute mark, and this will set us up well for the rest of this show and probably tomorrow's. If we just take a quick break now, we come back. We will read J-Dog's email setting up how this game works, and then we're going to get into it. Stay with us. Okay? This right here is a classic July 29th episode of TBTL. All right, it's time to get into this little game that our friend J-Dog suggested.

00:10:44 - 00:11:48 | Speaker 1:

Andrew, what is the story on this? So I have a game I invented, writes J-Dog. I invented it in a parking lot with some friends a few years back, and I just realized it may be a fun summer game for you. I'd love to know what they were doing in a parking lot. Um, J-Dawg says, the game is called Blind Trailer, and basically one person plays the audio from movie trailers and the other person has to guess what movie it is. It's simple, it's fun, and it may be pretty entertaining for the audience. So here's what we did. Instead of one of us picking all of the trailers, we have each picked five, correct, Luke? And we're going to try to quiz each other. Now, I was concerned that there might be some overlap. If you picked five and I picked five with our – because I was trying to pick things that I know you have some awareness of, and so maybe it's come up at some point on TBTL or something. So I thought, what are the chances that you and I both pick five trailers and we don't have any overlap? So I actually picked a safety one. So I actually have six here, just so you know, just in case. Well, I have seven. Whoa, really?

00:11:48 - 00:12:23 | Speaker 2:

Because I had two that didn't work. So I have five that might work and two that definitely don't work that I could play if we just want to blow the whole segment up. And I did the same thing for you. This is a real gift of the Magi situation, Andrew. I try to think about movies that you've mentioned that you had some connection to potentially or had expressed an admiration or interest in because I figured that you would do something like that for the same kind of calculation for me. And I just didn't want us to overlap too much. So my guess is these will not overlap very much because they were, again, I picked them based on things you've said.

00:12:24 - 00:13:03 | Speaker 1:

Now, here's my concern. In putting these together, I had to reject, like, my first three ideas because they say the name of the movie or they say the name of the character over and over again. Like, I wanted to have Joe versus the volcano, but they keep saying, Joe, Joe, Joe. And so I was like, okay, that's no good. And there were some others that I don't want to give away that I had to reject for similar reasons. Even if they didn't say the name of the movie, it just seemed too obvious. So I'm doing this and I'm thinking, oh, no, this is all too obvious. And I hope I didn't over adjust. Like I honestly going into this, I don't know if this is going to be way too easy for you to figure out or way too hard or neither.

00:13:03 - 00:13:30 | Speaker 2:

OK, well, let's find out together. I've got my little notes are I've got each of these. And then I have in my notes where I have to make sure to pause the tape. Yes, because it's like right before they either say the name of the movie or they just like say something that's so incredibly obvious as to what the film is. Yep. So, yeah. Exactly the same thing on my end, by the way. So this, I think, will be – it'll be fun no matter what and a little chance to talk about movies.

00:13:31 - 00:14:02 | Speaker 1:

So do you want to start? I would love to. Let me see here. Now I got Theo. He's yelling at me again. He only wants to be in my life. What's Theo's favorite movie? Theo, what's your favorite movie? He says it's the Cat on a Hot Tin Lap. Cats and Jammer Kids. Is that a thing? Isn't that a Cats and Jammer Kids? Is that a real comic strip from the old times, or is it just something that was made up in Miller's Crossing? Do you remember that? The one dumb mobster guy just loved reading his Cats and Jammer Kids?

00:14:02 - 00:14:31 | Speaker 2:

No, it was a real thing, an American comic strip created by Rudolf Dierks in 1897. Is that off the top of your head, or did you look that up? No. I am 100% reading that from the internet. But did you know that it was a real thing? No, I didn't. I had literally never even heard of the Katzenjammer. I mean, when you said it, it sounded like a thing. But I think I've actually been to some restaurant in Leavenworth called the Katzenjammer. Because it's like a faux Bavarian thing. So, no, I was not familiar with that. I'm also now aware that Miller's Crossing was a film you considered.

00:14:33 - 00:14:43 | Speaker 1:

It was not, actually. But I do love that movie. And there were some – well, I don't want to give away too much. There were some related movies that I considered that I was not able to pull off.

00:14:43 - 00:15:00 | Speaker 2:

I think I tried to – I actually – I believe I looked up Miller's Crossing for you, and it was one of the ones I was thinking about. But I think it – this guy keeps going, is Miller going to cross that? Oh, it truly was a Miller's Crossing. I looked that one up.

00:15:00 - 00:15:44 | Speaker 3:

too by the way i just thought it was once morgan freeman starts talking it's actually pretty good shawshank was was like was started off okay because it's basically the judge sentencing andy dufresne which is a little bit general and i thought you may not know you may not remember the or actually i should say it's the prosecutor talking about the fact that a a revolver holds six bullets and this person who shot andy dufresne's wife and lover shot eight times so that the person had reloaded which is why this should be like you know special malice associated with this killing of course Andy Dufresne didn't do it but whatever so I didn't think you would pick that part up but then once Morgan Freeman starts talking it's like forget it yes yes I'd like to

00:15:44 - 00:15:58 | Speaker 2:

say that Andrew didn't lose the quiz that day all right that was my that was my terrible imitation here is your first trailer hold on when am I supposed to cut this off okay we listen to a A minute ten of this. Here we go.

00:16:02 - 00:16:08 | Speaker 1:

In the tradition of the Three Stooges, Abbott and Costello, and the Reagan administration.

00:16:08 - 00:16:14 | Speaker 4:

Robert P. Blackfizer, attorney at law. Don't try to get up. We're both fine. I know what I'm doing. I know what I'm doing.

00:16:14 - 00:16:16 | Speaker 1:

Comes a film so confusing.

00:16:17 - 00:16:20 | Speaker 4:

Aren't those numbers clicking by awfully fast? You're probably a speed reader. Well, you got me there.

00:16:21 - 00:16:40 | Speaker 2:

Do you have any idea yet? Are you just being polite? I know exactly what movie this is. Oh, I thought you would know Yeah, I'm sorry. You can ring in whenever, because I figured that you would know this immediately. Well, sure, obviously. You had to pull the same one. I knew this was going to happen.

00:16:41 - 00:16:43 | Speaker 3:

I pulled a different version of the trailer, though.

00:16:43 - 00:16:46 | Speaker 2:

Don't turn it up, but we'll find. Oh, what?

00:16:46 - 00:16:52 | Speaker 4:

I know what I'm doing. I know what I'm doing. Aren't those numbers clicking by awfully fast?

00:16:52 - 00:16:55 | Speaker 3:

Or maybe it's the same one. Maybe did you edit yours down a little bit?

00:16:55 - 00:16:58 | Speaker 2:

No, I'm playing this directly. I'm playing this directly from YouTube.

00:17:00 - 00:17:14 | Speaker 4:

Is there some experiment that went wrong? Why don't we step outside and settle this like men? We are outside. Why don't we step inside and settle this like women? I'm twice the man you are. So is she. And it's driving me mad.

00:17:14 - 00:17:18 | Speaker 3:

By the way, Livia Soprano making a big appearance in this film.

00:17:20 - 00:17:34 | Speaker 4:

Do you look 18, office? I swear. You're going to spank me. We can start there. I could make love to you right here and now. Roland, please, let's keep this on a professional level.

00:17:34 - 00:17:39 | Speaker 3:

Very well, then I'll charge you 50 bucks a pop. I love that line, by the way. He's trying to seduce Livia.

00:17:39 - 00:18:07 | Speaker 2:

This is the same trailer, I think, all the same jokes. Now, it's funny that you picked that for me because I picked that for you because, of course, and I'll just say it. You know, we're dancing around it with the Miller's Crossing thing. You said that as a kid for some reason or maybe as an adult for some reason your brain confuses the movies brain donors and Barton Fink right and I now realize why maybe we realized this a long time ago they're both John Turturro films. I don't think I realized that John Turturro was in brain donors.

00:18:08 - 00:18:37 | Speaker 3:

I don't know if I did either or if this is a territory we've covered but my journey on it was I thought oh I'll do Barton Fink for Andrew. because I know you like that movie, and I thought it would be funny, but it's like everyone's saying, Fink! Like, it's just the trailer immediately gives away that it's Barton Fink. So then I thought it would be funny if I do brain donors for Andrew, and then I tell him that I couldn't do Barton Fink. Then I went to another level this morning, which I also didn't end up using, which was I went to Brain Candy by Kids in the Hole. Oh, that's

00:18:37 - 00:18:39 | Speaker 2:

a good one. But I know you know that

00:18:39 - 00:18:50 | Speaker 3:

one because we used that drop. My empire is crumbling! So I was like, He's going to get this right away. So anyway, two points for us. Brain Donor.

00:18:50 - 00:19:17 | Speaker 2:

Yes, Brain Donors. It is. Yeah, earlier I was trying to be a little bit, not show all my cards, and I was saying that some of these trailers just say the name over and over. Joe vs. the Volcano was one. Barton Fink was, I mean, you and I went through the same exact journey. Barton Fink was the very first one I thought of. I thought I'm going to play Barton Fink and Brain Donors, but the very first one I went to was Barton Fink, and it was just like, Barton, Barton, hell, his name is Barton. And I was like, OK, I think Luke will get that pretty easily.

00:19:17 - 00:19:59 | Speaker 3:

But also the process of of of looking at all these shows makes me want to see almost all of these. Oh, like me to Barton Fink. And again, I'll I'll leave a few out in case they need to come up later. I need to use them where we you know, we've we've already overlapped on literally the first one that we pulled. So who knows? I also wonder how J-Dog and his friends were actually able to play this. it must have been a lot of going, oh, that one says the name, because this was a fun kind of journey to go on, but it's a very special film trailer that doesn't say the name. Well, the first thing is, it seems like it goes better the...

00:20:00 - 00:20:57 | Speaker 2:

What am I trying to say here? There was an era where the voiceover person was just saying the name of the movie or the person or the whatever. Like it was it was that kind of sort of Don LaFontaine, but not in a world, but more just like, you know, Melanie Griffith. That's not her name. And working girl again. Shout out to the show we already recorded today. But they just were there was a there was a sort of a style of film trailers. What I'm trying to say, yeah, that was that that doesn't really work for this. And I don't know how J-Dog and his friends weren't just constantly hitting on trailers that don't work. This was kind of a bit of a slog finding ones that might work. I had the same exact journey. So, now, do you want to start the next one? Yes. Okay. I do. So, here we go. I'm not going to give it too much fanfare or buildup. Just take a listen. And you can ring in any time you know it or also just hang back and let the audience enjoy this fine movie trailer. I know it. For centuries, Americans have gathered together. Wait, you already know it?

00:20:57 - 00:21:06 | Speaker 1:

No, I was just joking. Sorry. Reaffirm family ties And wish goodwill to all men But this Christmas

00:21:06 - 00:21:25 | Speaker 4:

Santa's got a brand new bag Man, you gotta listen to this, man Because this concerns you, all right? If you had the chance To knock off the half-failer dogs

00:21:25 - 00:21:26 | Unknown:

Would you take him?

00:21:27 - 00:21:37 | Speaker 1:

Yeah What do a stewardess, a gunrunner, a bail bondsman, an ex-con, a federal agent, and a beach bunny have in common?

00:21:38 - 00:21:39 | Speaker 2:

All right, if you're not getting it off of that.

00:21:39 - 00:21:46 | Speaker 1:

I don't know this movie. I don't think that's obviously... They're all chasing a half million in cash.

00:21:47 - 00:21:50 | Speaker 4:

Half a million dollars will always be missed.

00:21:50 - 00:21:53 | Speaker 1:

Let him get the money and then just take it from me.

00:21:53 - 00:22:06 | Speaker 4:

She's trying to play your ass against me, huh? That was fun. Wait a second.

00:22:06 - 00:22:18 | Speaker 3:

Hold on. Is this Jackie Brown? It's Jackie Brown. Wait, all that Santa talk confused me. What's the Santa? I love Jackie Brown. And obviously that's Samuel L. Jackson.

00:22:21 - 00:22:22 | Speaker 1:

Yeah, it's Jackie Brown.

00:22:22 - 00:22:23 | Speaker 2:

That's just what they decided to do with the trailer.

00:22:24 - 00:22:32 | Speaker 1:

I'll let him finish out. Pam Greer, Samuel L. Jackson, Robert Forster, Bridget Fonda, Michael Keaton, and Robert De Niro.

00:22:32 - 00:22:33 | Speaker 4:

Is she dead?

00:22:33 - 00:22:34 | Speaker 1:

I, I, I...

00:22:34 - 00:22:36 | Speaker 4:

Yes or no? Is she dead?

00:22:36 - 00:22:40 | Speaker 1:

Pretty much. Quentin Tarantino's Jackie Brown.

00:22:40 - 00:22:47 | Speaker 2:

There you go. You got it. Yeah, that whole... I actually, I was into that whole weird Christmas thing because I figured it might throw you.

00:22:47 - 00:23:20 | Speaker 3:

Yeah, I wanted... So this must have been a theatrical release during the holidays, and so they did that weird tie-in. Because I kept picturing, like, Samuel L. Jackson as Santa Claus. I kept, like, picturing him dressed up like Santa Claus, and I couldn't place it. But, yeah, then as soon as I heard De Niro's voice, and then I think I was inching closer and closer until I heard De Niro, then I was like, oh, throw away all your preconceived notions about what's happening on the screen right now. This is Jackie Brown. That's my favorite Tarantino movie, hands down, and one of my favorite movies is probably top five for me, if not top ten.

00:23:21 - 00:24:25 | Speaker 2:

Well, that's why I picked it, Andrew, because I figured, you know, you love that movie. And I will tell you this. Every time you talk about Jackie Brown, I think I say the same thing. I'm like, ah, it's a little slow for me. But man, watching that trailer like four times as I was loading it in, the audio, I was like, I should give that another day in court. Where are we at on Tarantino? He's been doing the rounds. I think he has a book out now, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. He's been doing lots of interviews. How do we, I mean, I don't think it can be argued I think it's hard to make the argument that he's not a compelling filmmaker, certainly, right? The movies he makes are very, very creative and very watchable, also always too long, hyper-violent, weird stuff around race. I think the pushback on him of late has been, do you have to write scenes? Do you have to write scenes where white people are using the N-word that much, and sometimes write them for yourself? Is that necessary, I think, is the thing that people are not loving about the Quentin Tarantino oeuvre these days right yeah and you know I've never even when I

00:24:25 - 00:25:00 | Speaker 3:

was obsessed with Tarantino you know I quote unquote discovered him or like me and my friends really got into him of course with Pulp Fiction which is a huge hit and I think I've said this on the show before like we went to the I know I saw that in the theater five times like it was just became like a a weekend activity it was in the second run theaters for so long when it came out and I want to say 94 um and it I was obsessed with that and then got into you know I guess the back catalog at that point was only Reservoir Dog's point is he was one of those first directors who I started following as a director and so I loved his films I never really liked him as a person

00:25:00 - 00:25:46 | Speaker 1:

And that's fine. He was always kind of obnoxious and did that chip on his shoulder thing during interviews. Even long before I was a sensitive ponytail man or long before we had a lot of the conversations about race and culture that we're having today, I think almost everybody disliked the scene in Pulp Fiction where he wrote a character for himself where he says the N-word a whole bunch. it's always been a terrible scene like his acting is terrible it's totally gratuitous and it's so clear that he just wanted an opportunity to say like i can it's literally like it just seems like i can say this word because i'm so down or something and it's just like it it wasn't good then and it certainly stands out like a sore thumb in 2021 and it's like man that movie is almost

00:25:46 - 00:26:41 | Speaker 2:

flawless except for that and then you get into this is uh this is really like again very complicated territory not the territory that they anyone needs two white dudes weighing in on but like Django Unchained is a I think it would be hard to not describe it as a very complicated film right and of course the actors that chose to be in the film Jamie Foxx other black actors who said yeah we want to be a part of this I'm I'm not going to say anything about their creative choices but I'm it you know I do think it's been pointed out that it's a lot of violence being committed towards black bodies by white people and you could argue i guess that that shows the cruelty that this country this country is built on you could also maybe say is this just some kind of bizarre sort of fetishistic acting out of something that's really terrible and has happened we don't need to all just like marinate in it so much yeah i could go on forever because i've had

00:26:41 - 00:26:46 | Speaker 1:

these conversations my complicated feelings this is where j-dog hoped this game was exactly this

00:26:46 - 00:26:52 | Speaker 2:

is exactly, word for word, like the conversations they have when they're hotboxing in his Kia Soul. That's why I

00:26:52 - 00:28:11 | Speaker 1:

honestly, a lot of his newer movies I love parts of them, but they all seem to end, like I don't love this fascination with like, just like counterfactual historical revenge fantasies like they're all that, like I love Inglourious Bastards, but of course it ends with them spoiler alert, killing Hitler and then you do the slavery version of that where there there can be an uprising a bunch of slaveholders I like and then even once upon a time in Hollywood which I loved that movie but it just seems like every movie by Tarantino has to and I think I've said this on the show before and I don't think I came up with it I think I'm maybe I'm sort of stealing this phrase from Lindy West way back in the day but it's like he will he will have he will be a good little boy and he will be playing with his toys and showing a lot of creativity and narratives. And then about two and a half hours in, he gets tired of playing with his toys, so he just starts bashing them together and just crashing them and ripping off the limbs. And that's the way it always ends. And it's like, you were making something beautiful. Can you try just a soft landing? And that, my friend, comes back to Jackie Brown. It is a beautiful movie, start to finish, with a really, really... Do you remember how it ends with Pam Greer just driving and you see a small tear forming? She gets the money? Yeah, spoiler.

00:28:12 - 00:28:14 | Speaker 2:

Did she have to kill Robert Forster?

00:28:16 - 00:28:24 | Speaker 1:

No. No? She just gets the money? Yeah, no, he survives. Yeah, spoilers, I guess. I mean, honestly. 20 years old?

00:28:25 - 00:28:27 | Speaker 2:

Yeah, I think it's okay if we spoil Jack.

00:28:27 - 00:28:32 | Speaker 1:

Anyway, I want to hear. So you played that one for me, right? How are we on time here? Maybe do we take a break?

00:28:32 - 00:29:07 | Speaker 2:

The show's over, Andrew. We've played two trailers. We played one trailer twice, almost over itself, And then one additional one, which makes me think we are going to have to carry this over. I did want to say The Hateful Eight, the opening of that movie, just them in the snow traveling and just the way it's all shot. I don't want to get into trying to speculate on millimeters of film because I just don't know anything about filmmaking. But the opening, the first, I don't know, however long of that movie, the first 30 minutes of that movie are just unbelievable.

00:29:07 - 00:29:23 | Speaker 1:

Oh, yeah, and the way you have to figure out who these characters are and what their relationship is, and it's not super expositional. Like, he does that stuff just so great. Like, when he's good, he is so good, and then he just crashes everything together, and it's so weird. Anyway, okay, do we take a break then?

00:29:24 - 00:29:57 | Speaker 2:

Yep, quick break, and then we'll come back, and I guess we'll pick a rock and gold song, and then we'll come back tomorrow and try to jam through all of these. We don't have to explain the game as much tomorrow. Wait, the game didn't involve that much explanation. We were just talking about time traveling and the listeners not liking the summer games. That's what really ate up some time today. So anyway, we won't do that tomorrow. But yeah, quick break and then back with Mark. All right, we're going to get out of here with a Rockin' Gold song. But Andrew, you want to do one more really quickly here, one more trailer, I guess, just to set us up a little better for tomorrow?

00:29:57 - 00:30:00 | Speaker 1:

Yeah, that way we'll both have played two off of our...

00:30:00 - 00:30:18 | Speaker 3:

our list. So here, I'm going to play another one for you here. Now, let's see here. I'm going to try this one. Now, this one, I feel a little bit bad. It's not necessarily something we've talked about a lot or that I even associate with you, but take a listen. It was the final voyage of

00:30:18 - 00:30:25 | Speaker 2:

America's mightiest battleship. What's on this helicopter? This little sweetheart. Miss July 89.

00:30:25 - 00:30:54 | Speaker 1:

god i love this business the party was wild they really knocked him dead imagine this arsenal of tactical nuclear weapons falling into the wrong hands the pentagon never did four minutes ahead of schedule damn i'm good now a team of terrorists have taken over wake up the president but there's just one thing they didn't count on oh i know But this is going to be under siege, right?

00:30:55 - 00:31:06 | Speaker 3:

The cook. Exactly. Seagal. Under siege. I mean, you actually beat out the words. The one thing they didn't count on was the cook. But I knew if you got to the cook, you'd get there. That would have been a dead giveaway. Yes, yes. Yeah.

00:31:06 - 00:31:37 | Speaker 2:

Oh, my gosh. I say this on the show all the time. But the reason that I don't get – well, now I don't get down with Seagal because he's a maniac. But in those days, like I used to love movies like Die Hard and stuff. But I couldn't ever get into Seagal stuff because he just always came out without a scratch. He was this cook. He was taking down entire invading forces just with his martial arts and his Seagal-ness. It was less fun for me because he was so invincible.

00:31:37 - 00:32:00 | Speaker 3:

Yeah, you know, I never got into really any of that. I do think I saw that. I have a somewhat vague memory of renting that at one point when I was renting a lot of movies in high school Because maybe I was just like, ah, I ran out of other things It was before I got into more arty films I don't know what led me to rent it, but I did But it was very unlike me That's probably the only Seagal film I've ever seen in my life

00:32:00 - 00:32:25 | Speaker 2:

Yeah, I'm trying to figure out the I think he had a movie called On Deadly Ground Which was basically this movie But he's just standing on a different surface Where he has to defeat like 800 baddies Like, that was every single Steven Seagal movie, of course, was just him being the underestimated, quiet guy who then just, like, you know, kicked everybody's butt. Guess what?

00:32:26 - 00:32:27 | Speaker 3:

He's the custodian.

00:32:28 - 00:32:39 | Speaker 2:

But there was one thing they never planned on. The other cook. This one is a little lower on the—he has to do a lot of the food prep. The guy who has to wash the potatoes.

00:32:41 - 00:33:15 | Speaker 3:

All right. Well, that just flew by, didn't it? Yeah, it did. One more in there. That was fun. Now, I realize I only have two more songs to choose before we say goodbye to the McDonald's Rock and Gold. Unless we had a week, which I'm not ruling out. We could do that. By the way, when we are back next week live, we will be continuing the song of the summer. So if you haven't put in your votes yet, it's not too late. Okay, so what we're going to go out with today, off of the McDonald's Rock and Gold Summer Classics cassette tape, we will be going out with the Shangri-Las.

00:33:15 - 00:33:32 | Speaker 2:

Can I? I love this. This is a big this is a big tick tock meme, which is hilarious to me. Not the not the walking in the sand part, but the oh, no. Wait, is this the one that goes into? Oh, no. Oh, I think that's leader of the pack.

00:33:33 - 00:33:36 | Speaker 3:

Oh, oh, wait. No, no, no. That's when they're like, no, no, no, no, no, no.

00:33:36 - 00:34:00 | Speaker 2:

Yeah. Yeah. Look out. Look out. Look out. I think this one goes. Oh, no. Yeah. Yeah. Oh, no, no, no, no, no. It is. That part. That little stanza is wildly popular on TikTok, which is hilarious because it's such this is such an old song. It's so out of the blue. We can we come up with a winter game, Andrew, or maybe a summer game next year that has to do with Steven Seagal movie names?

00:34:01 - 00:34:02 | Speaker 3:

Yeah, I think so.

00:34:02 - 00:34:30 | Speaker 2:

Because they very much decided that there was one style of name for a Seagal film that worked. Now, if I read them to you, then you'll know the answers. So, but it's undersea. it's under siege above the law hard to kill out for justice marked for death beyond the law on deadly ground fire down below I guess we just did the game it is insane the consistency of these naming conventions

00:34:30 - 00:34:32 | Speaker 3:

yeah that's really good

00:34:32 - 00:34:46 | Speaker 2:

we squeezed another game in here so I hope you guys are all happy take it away Shangri-Las and we'll be back here tomorrow with our final summer game or at least our extended edition of this. See you in a minute. By that I mean see you tomorrow.

00:34:47 - 00:35:22 | Speaker 3:

Are you saying no mountain too tall at the end of these things? Yeah. He said to my baby go And this letter came for me He said that we were true He said to my dear Let me think, let me think What can I do?

00:35:25 - 00:35:32 | Speaker 4:

Oh no Oh no Oh no, no, no, no, no

00:35:32 - 00:35:33 | Speaker 2:

Amen

00:35:33 - 00:35:36 | Speaker 4:

Walking in the sand

00:35:36 - 00:35:36 | Speaker 2:

Amen

00:35:36 - 00:35:39 | Speaker 4:

Walking hand in hand

00:35:39 - 00:35:45 | Unknown:

Amen The night was so exciting Amen The smile was so inviting

00:35:45 - 00:35:47 | Speaker 1:

Power out
