all right day three of the tbtl winter games i'm luke burbank here with my friend and the longest running cobra of the show mr andrew walsh hello there hello luke feeling good

00:00:28 - 00:00:34 | Speaker 2:

having fun. Yeah, the quizzes have been great so far. I mean, we've only gone through two but yeah, it's feeling good to me.

00:00:34 - 00:00:48 | Speaker 1:

It's feeling wintry. Absolutely. Do you have any special like Christmas food that you're looking forward to making? What are you all doing for Christmas? Are you going to do a big production? No

00:00:48 - 00:01:17 | Speaker 2:

big production. We'll be traveling so I think on Christmas Day we will be in Hawaii so I'm hoping that there will be Tiki drinks to be had So on actual Christmas day You'll actually be there I believe that's the plan Yeah exactly Nobody robbed me Do you want to go back and take that out Are you worried now No I'm not worried about it Nobody knows where I live It's impossible to find out

00:01:17 - 00:01:20 | Speaker 1:

What kind of a long con would that be

00:01:20 - 00:01:24 | Speaker 2:

Somebody listens to TV Chill for years

00:01:24 - 00:01:35 | Speaker 1:

Assiduously tracks your where you live and your comings and goings and then just goes and just steals your WMMS record which we learned during yesterday's game is the only thing that you value in your

00:01:35 - 00:01:39 | Speaker 2:

place. Is there a Hawaiian food because you're going to be in Hawaii at some point

00:01:39 - 00:01:41 | Speaker 1:

too. I'm getting there the day after

00:01:41 - 00:02:11 | Speaker 2:

Christmas. Oh really is there a Hawaiian food that you especially look forward to because I do love just like I think my favorite this isn't a food but generally speaking is I love a good Hawaiian breakfast right with the with the Portuguese sausage and spam and the fried rice with the eggs like that is probably I know it's kind of that's a real basic thing to say but I do love that and of course I do love me like the loco moco stuff especially if you're getting kind of the pork version of it which I

00:02:11 - 00:04:00 | Speaker 1:

know is not great for the pigs right well see that's the thing for me is I don't think I ever had a um a hugely strong or knowledgeable relationship with hawaiian cuisine you know i'd been to a luau or two and i'd had you know the moco loco kind of stuff and uh i certainly like i do like the combination of like a a fried egg and rice yes i really like that the egg yolk getting all mixed in with stuff but i would say that that relationship which was always a little bit distant became more distant when i stopped eating meat because it's pretty meat heavy So I don't know what I'm going to eat when I'm there And I don't even know actually My actual Christmas day plan Is Addie is coming down on Christmas Eve And so we're going to You know just have a fun Christmas Eve night hanging out Add Addie and Daddy time And then Christmas morning Damn it That's the way that People refer to themselves When they're talking about their children And then yeah christmas morning we'll do presents and hang out and you know just kind of have a nice leisurely day so i don't know what the food plan is going to be but addy is actually quite the quite the aspiring gourmand these days so um who knows maybe she'll have some some idea for a big big sort of meal that we should try to make and i've had this i have had this fake turkey roast for like six months now that's not true for probably three months now i bought it before thanksgiving but like a month before Thanksgiving because I was just, it was right by the checkout and I was like, I'm going to need one of those and you never know with the supply chain. I put it in my freezer. I put it in a cooler. I drove it up to my parents' house for Thanksgiving. I never took it out of the cooler. I drove it back to Portland. I put it back in the freezer.

00:04:00 - 00:04:06 | Speaker 2:

Like I'm picturing like somebody who's transferring an organ. Yep. Like you have a special little cooler. I life flighted it

00:04:06 - 00:05:58 | Speaker 1:

to and from Silverdale. It's on dry ice. Yep. And I'm bringing it back here. My feeling is it can't go that bad. It is pretty. It is a deeply synthetic product as it is. So, but maybe I can break that. I wouldn't mind doing some kind of, you know, I actually had a fake ham product that was pretty yummy. I forget who made it, but I don't know. I'm up for doing a Christmas meal, but it is TBD. The reason I'm asking you this, Andrew, is because today's winter game comes from our dear friend, listener Jamie in Mississippi, who knows a thing or two about tbtl and also about entertaining because she's also got this amazing thing in their home called sunstroke studios where um she will have bands come through and performers and of course very kindly hosted us for a tbtl live and she fed folks and put them up She's just the consummate host, and we love her very much. But we love her even more because she sent in an awesome quiz related to holiday foods. Okay? Here's what she said. First of all, there's a photo attached of this something called the New Holiday Cookbook. And she says, I'm not so sure about this once I finished it, but I have a crazy cookbook, and the recipes are just stunningly awful. It says favorite recipes of home economics teachers, by the way, Andrew So you've got the cover of this book is some kind of meat Looks like some sort of meatballs with corn in them In front of a sort of holly plant that's got candles in it It's definitely evoking a Christmas vibe I will tell you, though, this is from that era of cookbooks Where it was almost like they were actively trying to make the food look as unappetizing as possible

00:05:58 - 00:07:50 | Speaker 2:

Yes. You know, I can't remember what restaurant we were ordering from Genevieve and I recently, and it might have even been one of those things where we were in the restaurant, but all of the menus are now on your phones, right? Yes. With the QR code. But it's a place that we like, that we root for. I can't remember what it was, and the food is usually fine there, but they had – oh, I know what it was. I'll just say it. But it's not my favorite restaurant, but there's this place around the corner from us called the Westie. And the food there is fine. I mean, I'm just going to be honest. Yeah. Oh, and they got rid of the waffle fries during the pandemic. Yeah, now they've got these like French. Here's the thing. They have like these French shoestring potatoes now, which is good. Here's the thing about the Westie. And I'm going to say this. I like them and I root for them. And they're a good neighborhood bar. And there are Brown's bar. So I really appreciate them hosting the Brown's games. But like they're a pub that thinks they're they're just aiming too high with their food. Like they should bring down the bar of what they're doing and do it better, if that makes sense, as opposed to they think they're being a little bit fancier than I think they can actually achieve. You know, I think that if they just went a little bit more basic, but they had some sort of special on their menu. And yes, we're looking at the menu on our phone and I think it was some sort of a pasta dish. it was like a dish you know and the photo of it Luke like just skip the photo like if you can't take I'm sure the food was good but it was one of the worst pictures of food I have ever seen it looked stomach turning and I can't believe that they were that nobody there said maybe we should just skip the photo on this one it's not coming out you know the way we want that's amazing that

00:07:50 - 00:09:29 | Speaker 1:

in this day and age now i will say that the that that photo made its way onto the menu you just think you could snap another pic with your iphone yeah that being said food photography is a real skill very difficult there is something to it it is like there's a reason why there's a whole industry around um product shots there's a reason why a lot of times i'll make something and i'll feel kind of proud of it and i want to take a picture of it and like send it to becca or something and i'll take a picture i'll be like whoa that didn't look it looks a lot better in real life than it does in that photo um but you'd still think that somebody in the process would say this is not what we're going to use to represent this particular uh dish uh i also think it has to do with the color tones of photography in the 70s like i remember once on live wire i forget why but a gift like we had a kind of a joke a gag gift for i think it was a gag gift and we were working off of a book called microwave cooking for one which i believe we identified as a pretty sad premise for a book yeah one of the sadder cookbooks like microwave and and in the i just remember the cover of it just the cover was exactly kind of what you'd expect for a book called microwave cooking for one it didn't it didn't evoke joy anyway this looks like it's from the same era um jamie says uh the cover sets the tone but the recipes wow tying it to holidays is just such a stretch i put together a quiz where you try to match the recipe so the name and the main ingredients with the recommended holiday this may take comedic genius to make this funny though well jamie have you heard the show you are dealing with two

00:09:29 - 00:11:25 | Speaker 2:

recognized comedic geniuses yeah apparently my netflix special has been put on hold because it was very improv based and i could only think of two songs that had heaven in the title and i could only think of them because you said them uh moments earlier so yeah unfortunately the network execs heard that example that's actually better that allows you to focus all of your comedic genius into this show yes exactly and the thing is but also it gives me more time because that's the thing about improv is you just need more time to think of the jokes in advance that's my understanding. saying this to people when i was on that shoot now a couple of weeks ago when they would say oh are you good at improv and i would say i'm terrible at improv the secret to good improv is a lot of planning and that is absolutely true for me now i was wondering when i saw this book i've been to jamie's home it is a lovely home it's a showpiece of a home but i thought why are you keeping this book listener jamie you have you know you have other cookbooks you have you know your house is is beautiful. Why are you saving this most unappetizing of cookbooks? Well, Jamie has answered that question. To answer the obvious question, Luke, why would anyone in the year 2020 have such a cookbook? Well, my grandmother, super dignified until her final day, was outraged when a lifelong friend went into nursing care and her friend's children put her belongings in a yard sale my grandmother went over and shut it down bought everything discreetly disposed of most of it but kept and shared the cookbooks I think of her when I see them and it warms my heart and reminds me to update my will my hippie vegetarian cookbooks are pure gold signed listener Jamie so there you go that's a that is a very that's a very strong argument for keeping such a silly book in that it reminds you of your grandmother looking out for her friend but then

00:11:25 - 00:11:41 | Speaker 3:

discreetly throwing a lot of the stuff away so i'm not exactly sure what was accomplished there but i guess the the thing was just like galling to be like not only and again this isn't the language you use but maybe it was like kind of the we're putting you in a home we're quote unquote putting you in a home and selling off your stuff maybe that's what galled the grandma

00:11:41 - 00:11:57 | Speaker 2:

right because she she didn't turn around and sell it herself she she discreetly probably donated some of it so maybe the the family members actually making financial profit and god on the out on the streets i mean this book yeah the street value of this book is out of this world

00:11:57 - 00:12:04 | Speaker 3:

is galling the grandma galling the grandma is that a show title galling grandma are we still

00:12:04 - 00:12:35 | Speaker 2:

doing those i think so at some point oh cool okay here's what we're gonna do i am going to give you this quiz andrew i have the questions and the answers here in portland with me so we're gonna take a quick break and then when we come back I am going to quiz you I'm going to find out just how keen your knowledge of holiday foods are from home economics teachers from a book that reminds Jamie of her mother sticking up for her friend that's all going to happen in just a moment here on TBTL Winter Games Day 3

00:12:45 - 00:13:11 | Speaker 1:

How do you like to spend Christmas on Christmas Island? How do you like to spend a holiday away across the sea? How do you like to spend Christmas on Christmas Island?

00:13:11 - 00:13:19 | Speaker 3:

All right, welcome back. How perfect is this song for me? I'll be spending Christmas on a Christmas island.

00:13:20 - 00:14:19 | Speaker 2:

Oh, wait till we move a little later into the week and we're playing the Bing Crosby Christmas song. What is it? I'm going to get this. Let me just say my Hawaiian is medium, but I think it is Melakalikimaka. Yemele Kalikimaka is a Hawaiian way to say Merry Christmas to you, etc. I'm going full islands in the holiday for you. All right. Here we go. This is the holiday quiz, Andrew. You need to match the food that I'm describing. This is from Listener Jamie's grandmother's cookbook that she rescued from a garage sale that her friends' no-good children were having. And now, as recommended by home ec teachers. Did you take home ec when you were a kid? Do you remember anything about home ec?

00:14:19 - 00:14:59 | Speaker 3:

I did. What grade? So it wasn't high school. We took home ec in, I want to say, seventh grade. Probably eighth grade, seventh grade? I think seventh because what happened was it doesn't matter. But kindergarten through sixth was a traditional grade school for me. And then seventh grade was when we went to the junior high school. So it started to feel like high school. You had lockers. You switch class every period. And then in eighth grade, I went back to a grade school type environment. So anyway, it was seventh grade, I believe. And they divided it into two semesters. I believe one semester people took home ec and the other semester people took the, you know, the workshop one, the wood shop and the.

00:15:00 - 00:15:02 | Speaker 2:

Oh, sure. Shop class. They call shop class.

00:15:02 - 00:15:28 | Speaker 1:

Yeah, exactly. And so and I think that you alternate, you know, half the class would do it in the first semester and vice versa. So anyway, yeah, I remember them telling us not to refrigerate bread. And I think we also made bread and I sewed something. Oh, yeah, I think I sewed a cat using a pattern like a stuffed cat. I didn't sew two cats together or anything. It wasn't the island of Dr. Moreau or anything like that.

00:15:28 - 00:17:01 | Speaker 2:

the island of dr walsh row yeah right i i transferred you know i got kicked out of jesus creek in eighth grade and so i had to go for the last i don't know half of the year or something to washington middle school i don't even know if we had home ec at jesus creek but we had it at washington and i i took it and i loved it although i don't know how much ec we did actually what is home economics i don't know how much h we did um but i remember it was my memory was that it was taught by a woman named miss bothell if our friend p fletch is hearing this a fellow washington husky that is to say the middle school was the washington huskies she might be able to confirm this but um what i remember about that class was we did like make some kind of a bread or something and it was delicious oh we made cinnamon rolls once and i was like this is awesome i'm eating cinnamon roll but also she just read to us a lot aloud like from this book that was called hatchet it's about a kid love hatchet i love this book it was about a kid who's in an airplane and the plane crashes and the he's in the like wilderness of of of canada and having to survive etc it was very vivid uh and i loved it and uh yeah i don't know what i learned from a home economics standpoint but i did have generally positive thoughts about that class yeah did i say ballard i think it might have been Miss Bothell maybe not for a day or a I think it was Bothell maybe anyway you said that okay remember what you said okay so here we go as chosen by the home economics teachers of

00:17:01 - 00:17:19 | Speaker 1:

America yeah have we explained so I need them you're gonna give me you're gonna read a description I assume of a recipe and then I have to guess which holiday so I do have a list Jamie gave me a list of about I don't know seven or eight holidays here and so you're gonna describe this recipe and then i'm going to try to guess which holiday it associates itself with okay that's

00:17:19 - 00:17:48 | Speaker 2:

right so here we go thing number one 1970s okay meat products for the holidays liver sausage nutball okay here's what's in this liver sausage mayonnaise pickle juice worcestershire tabasco cream cheese onion and salted peanuts the liver sausage nut ball what holiday do you celebrate

00:17:48 - 00:18:13 | Speaker 1:

with the liver sausage nut ball i'll bet you that's the is that the food that's on the cover i'm going to make this um book cover the show pick i wonder if that's what we're seeing on the cover of this new holiday cookbook it's always new that sounds you know terrible i wouldn't come near that with your mouth with your fork i wouldn't touch that with your fork yikes um you

00:18:13 - 00:18:28 | Speaker 2:

know honestly if it weren't liver sausage i would be probably down with this this sounds actually very yummy to me except that it's liver sausage yeah um i'm gonna say new year's day golly you're

00:18:28 - 00:18:31 | Speaker 1:

right nice because i just figured that like that's a great way to kick off the new year

00:18:31 - 00:18:39 | Speaker 2:

sure absolutely celebrate celebrate one more trip around the sun on this big blue marble

00:18:39 - 00:19:03 | Speaker 1:

by starting the new year with a liver sausage ball i don't know i mean i have a i will say you know again jamie gave me a list of of um holidays to choose from i don't know why i had a feeling that was new year's i think i've seen my fair share of these terrible cookbooks before and it just sounded like something that they would try to convince you to to put out for your guests to ring in the new year oh awful but great that i'm right that's right you've got one right so far

00:19:03 - 00:20:05 | Speaker 2:

let's see there are like one two three four five six seven eight nine ten ten of these i don't know if we'll get through all of them but you have one right okay how about clam stuffed mushrooms mushrooms onion a can of minced clams breadcrumbs spices clam stuffed mushrooms what holiday would that before according to this cookbook and i say you know what don't overpay for your clams get them canned absolutely at the drugstore if possible um clam stuff why is it that buying certain food from the drugstore seems more upsetting and i don't mean like you know there are a lot of drugstores that are now basically supermarkets in a way so that's kind of is what it is but there was the period of time where like you'd be in a drugstore and for some bizarre reason they would decide to have like four food items but they were all the most shelf stable they'd be covered in dust because nobody was coming in to buy that food item

00:20:05 - 00:21:36 | Speaker 1:

yeah i don't know if i really want to get into this because it's embarrassing but um there is a pre-packaged brand of salami that i'll buy sometime i don't even know what it is honestly like growing up we didn't buy pre-packaged meats at all like we went to the we went to the butcher area and we would say you know slice me please like one pound of this turkey for sandwiches or whatever and that's still what i do for turkey but there is this pre-packaged salami where this you know everything is kind of mass producing the salamis or maybe the size of like very large pepperoni or something like you would buy it to you know put on a platter with crackers and cheese or what have you and i usually try to keep these in the fridge as a little like i didn't go to lunch today so i'll eat some of these on crackers or whatever and um just keeping the same habits that i had when i was you know a roly-poly 10 year old um but i see that same exact product at the drugstore and it makes me sad and i don't know why i buy it in the grocery store and i'm fine with that and i don't know why a meat like this is shelf stable that bothers me as well it seems like it should be refrigerated um but it's in the butcher section of my grocery store uh and it seems like it's in a refrigerated area although probably isn't but seeing it at my bartels across the street just i'm just like who would buy that here and i'm sure it's just like these stores are practically next door to each other you know what i mean they're probably off

00:21:36 - 00:21:49 | Speaker 2:

the same truck right and the the food product in question is not having any different experience in these two locations but it's how we perceive it yeah when we uh you know when when we uh come

00:21:49 - 00:22:05 | Speaker 1:

upon it that doesn't get me any closer to this i hate to blow this holiday so early in this game but if i had to guess i mean there's something about the fact that they're mushrooms and i do know that clams are sometimes used in this holiday's um uh meals so i'm gonna say thanksgiving

00:22:05 - 00:22:16 | Speaker 2:

but i'm gonna cringe you are you're not you're not super far off but it is in fact christmas Hold on, let me play Steven Seagal's song

00:22:16 - 00:22:25 | Speaker 1:

That is interesting So I know Christmas is off the list now as well So that tells me that

00:22:25 - 00:22:36 | Speaker 2:

And I don't believe that those The thing on the cover of the cookbook You're right, it's a ball of some kind And it's Christmassy But I guess it's not this So that did throw you off a little bit

00:22:36 - 00:22:49 | Speaker 1:

Okay, okay, okay It's Christmas, not Thanksgiving But Thanksgiving is still in play As is graduation, 4th of July labor day i'm looking forward to finding out what is a good labor day food yes how about

00:22:49 - 00:23:25 | Speaker 2:

um pate pineapple chicken livers onion oil cream sherry olives greens and by the way no pineapple you just arrange it to look like oh my god pineapple of pate but it's a pineapple of pate but it is just that you have shaped the pate into a pineapple shape fourth of july i mean there's no way you could know this i would never know if i didn't have the answer but they're putting this forward the home economics teachers of america

00:23:25 - 00:23:38 | Speaker 1:

as a valentine's day i was i almost said valentine's day i almost but then i thought well if we're just arranging it in something why wouldn't we arrange it in into a heart or you

00:23:38 - 00:24:28 | Speaker 2:

Exactly, the pineapple seems to have nothing to do with Valentine's Day Now, of late, and I told you this on the show a while ago And you were quite scandalized, I seem to remember And I'm wondering now if you've had a chance to observe it Maybe not in the wild, but in pop culture There is amongst people, at least the ones that pop up on TikTok occasionally Who are in open relationships Who are, I guess you could say, polyamorous Or at least in open relationships and are seeking out other, you know, adults who are in similar situations, the pineapple is supposed to be their, like, calling card. And I know about this because there'd be somebody on TikTok, like, when you're camping and you put out the pineapple lights and then people start coming around. Anyway, this could be a really interesting Valentine's Day with your pineapple pate.

00:24:29 - 00:24:36 | Speaker 1:

Yeah, I mean, also just, like, what puts you in a sexier mood than eating pate? Oh, God, just to get over here.

00:24:36 - 00:24:42 | Speaker 2:

Let's make out. How much pate have you been eating today? Let's play tonsil hockey. Oh, my goodness gracious.

00:24:43 - 00:24:43 | Speaker 1:

Okay.

00:24:43 - 00:24:53 | Speaker 2:

And, again, in a million years, I would have never guessed that was going to be Valentine's Day. So these are pretty challenging. I don't want you to get down on yourself. Well, I am down on myself, but it's my own fault. Don't get more down on yourself.

00:24:53 - 00:24:55 | Speaker 1:

I should have studied for this.

00:24:55 - 00:24:59 | Speaker 2:

Roman feast. Flour. Eggs.

00:25:00 - 00:25:06 | Speaker 1:

spinach, ground beef, chicken, chicken, giblets. Do you go with giblets?

00:25:07 - 00:25:09 | Speaker 2:

I think giblets, hard G, I think.

00:25:09 - 00:26:08 | Speaker 1:

Giblets, carrot, onion, tomato, and white wine. Roman feast. Now, I just want to tell you. What do you do with all this stuff? What is the final product? That's a great question. I'll Google it while you're trying to decide. Now, I will mention the Roman part of it feels like a little bit of a, Red It's not a red herring But this is not for like Columbus Day Or something Italian In its origins Right So I don't know I don't know why this Roman feast Is associated with this holiday But it is I'm going to say President's Day Oh Which is on the list It is on the list President's Day you're going to get There's a couple of them That are dead giveaways This one's not President's Day Can you think of another holiday here it just seems like roman feast like what labor day keep trying just gonna read

00:26:08 - 00:26:32 | Speaker 2:

everything off of the list and eventually we know it's not valentine's day um i guess we still have thanksgiving out there um because i thought it would be almost like ironic like i said president's day because that's uniquely american um and then did i say labor day because like what It's like you think of like the Romans as, you know, like the. That's the problem, though. Yeah.

00:26:32 - 00:26:51 | Speaker 1:

This is completely unrelated, as far as I know, random to anything associated with this holiday. And it is a holiday. It's not graduation. Well, it's a high holiday to my mom for some reason. The rest of us. I don't like take work off or even really remember it's happening.

00:26:51 - 00:26:51 | Speaker 2:

It's St. Patrick's Day.

00:26:52 - 00:27:07 | Speaker 1:

It's St. Patrick's Day. That's so wrong. I know, right? Wow. All right. I've gotten three wrong and one right. Well, these are very hard, Andrew, and that's why I'm glad that I got to be the quizzer and not the quizzee. Hey, can I tell you a quizling?

00:27:07 - 00:28:13 | Speaker 2:

Can I tell you a funny story, something that I learned, I believe, on Slack? OK. No, no. I think I got it via email from a listener who and I'm sorry, I don't have I want to say Carolyn put kind of connected some dots. And, you know, our dear friend who formerly went by the title Mary, the TBTL Virgin, although she now listens to the show from time to time, I believe. And, of course, we went out there and met her in Arizona and forced her to listen to the show with us live. I believe through a series of connections. Again, I want to go with Carolyn here. Carolyn realized that Mary's daughter. You following me here? And Mary in Arizona, her daughter, who I believe lives in Seattle, is friends with your cousin who runs the DACA Diner. DACA Diner. DACA Diner. Yes. They're friends. I saw that email. That's amazing. Oh, it did come in via email. Yeah. I guess I didn't tell. That's not a very interesting story. But it is a small world. We'll just leave it at that.

00:28:13 - 00:28:37 | Speaker 1:

It is a small world. And I'm also happy to hear that DACA is still up and running. You'd think I would know because it's my cousin, Ruthie, who I will be seeing, I believe, not long after this has actually hit the airwaves because we're doing a big family – an outdoor family get-together for Christmas with a bunch of people from my family, an extended family. But I'm glad to hear that Dacha Diner is still doing its thing there in Seattle despite your misgivings, Andrew.

00:28:38 - 00:28:53 | Speaker 2:

I thought the food was really good. I just expected more of a classic American – You heard the word diner. And it's literally not an American diner, so that's fine. But, no, it's more of a, you know, it's good food, but it's for a place for, you know, foodies to take pictures of their food and talk about it, whereas I just thought I was getting, like, steak and eggs or whatever.

00:28:53 - 00:29:16 | Speaker 1:

They have an amazing Roman feast there. That's what I hear. Are we any closer to knowing what that means? Nope. I Googled it, and I just put in the rest. It basically starts giving me Italian recipes. Yeah, yeah. So I don't know what a Roman – I don't know how you combine those things. I mean, flour and eggs sounds like maybe you're making pasta. I don't know

00:29:16 - 00:29:22 | Speaker 2:

flour and eggs or any kind of a dough but okay I'll take it these are hard

00:29:22 - 00:29:38 | Speaker 1:

how about beef in costume pumpkin, ground beef, onions, peppers olives, tomato sauce eggs beef in costume is what it's called

00:29:38 - 00:29:46 | Speaker 2:

I'm going to say that this is for Halloween then you are going to be right look at me I gave you the hard ones at first

00:29:46 - 00:29:48 | Speaker 1:

To break you down And I'm building you back up

00:29:48 - 00:29:50 | Speaker 2:

Exactly I'll be yours forever

00:29:50 - 00:29:59 | Speaker 1:

Okay well we're almost through these But I just want to throw a couple more at you Because I find them just to be Really quite amazing Well

00:30:00 - 00:30:54 | Speaker 2:

let's see here cocktail sausage balls hot bulk sausage don't google it biscuit mix and cheese whiz hot bulk sausage so i don't know if bulk sausage is some kind of antiquated term or if they're just literally saying don't overpay for this sausage go get it in bulk yeah mix it together with uh some biscuit mix and some cheese whiz and you will have cocktail sausage balls Hot bulk summer This is not for the summer though This is not for the summer though And again Makes no sense for this holiday in particular It's not It wouldn't be what would necessarily come to mind For this holiday And sausage and what else is in here Biscuit mix, cheese whiz That's it Hot bulk sausage, biscuit mix And cheese whiz

00:30:54 - 00:30:56 | Speaker 1:

I'm going to say that's for graduation though

00:30:56 - 00:30:58 | Speaker 2:

No, it's not in the summer

00:30:58 - 00:31:20 | Speaker 1:

Oh, is graduation in the summer? I guess spring, right? It's not in the summer, so it must be I guess we haven't hit I mean, I don't know, man Is it President's Day? I'm out of answers here Thanksgiving Thanksgiving, alright, sure Sausage and Cheese Whiz That's Thanksgiving

00:31:20 - 00:31:28 | Speaker 2:

Let's reverse it What do you think the President's Day one is? Just picking out of thin air. What do you think the President's Day is?

00:31:28 - 00:31:31 | Speaker 1:

Well, I only have the list of holidays. I don't have the list of food.

00:31:31 - 00:31:35 | Speaker 2:

I want you to invent a weird-ass dish that I'm making you make.

00:31:35 - 00:32:13 | Speaker 1:

For President's Day? Okay, no, I'm going to take this question seriously, actually. Yes. What would I prepare for President's Day? I feel like, again, it should be something American. Now, you start conflating the 4th of July with President's Day. Obviously, hot dogs are the meal of choice for for the 4th of July. So maybe maybe you're going to you're going to start with a hamburger on President's Day. You're going to start with the hamburger and you're going to add some slavery and other terrible, terrible things in American history.

00:32:13 - 00:32:40 | Speaker 2:

I'm not laughing about the terrible things. I'm laughing about the fact that we have venerated so many people historically and over time that we now realize we're terrible and we're part of a system that was, in fact, pretty terrible for a lot of people. You were close. It is Lincoln's Logs, ham, cream cheese, deviled ham, olives, and pecans. Lincoln's Logs, my boy.

00:32:40 - 00:32:46 | Speaker 1:

I mean, it starts bad with the title, and it gets worse with the description. I didn't think it could.

00:32:46 - 00:32:57 | Speaker 2:

You don't like your ham filled with cream cheese and then also deviled ham? They're like, let's really dominate the ham space. Yeah, right. Let's go with ham and deviled ham.

00:32:57 - 00:32:58 | Speaker 1:

Hey, throw me one of those logs.

00:33:00 - 00:33:03 | Speaker 2:

So you finally got presidency after this. I believe this just leaves one last one.

00:33:04 - 00:33:04 | Speaker 1:

Oh, no.

00:33:04 - 00:33:26 | Speaker 2:

And that is special sandwich cake, bread, deviled ham. Pickle relish, cream cheese, light cream, mayonnaise, other such things, crab rangoon and other such things that Andrew hates, olives and hard cooked eggs. The crab rangoon was a Stephen A. Smith reference.

00:33:26 - 00:33:45 | Speaker 1:

Oh, yes. Stephen A. Smith. I was going to ask you. I couldn't remember what the reference was. I guess when somebody has worked hard And just Barely graduated You punish them with this Special sandwich cake for graduation My

00:33:45 - 00:34:09 | Speaker 2:

Honey, you've barely touched your Special sandwich cake Magna cum grody That's our show title You write that down Deviled ham, pickled relish Cream cheese, light cream Mayonnaise, olives, hard-cooked eggs We should at some point, Andrew Have some sort of TBTL competition Where the punishment is The loser has to prepare everything

00:34:09 - 00:34:21 | Speaker 1:

On this menu and eat it Oh my god, you know I can't play games like that My ass can't write checks What is it? My mouth can't write checks and my ass can't cash Your ass will be cashing something

00:34:21 - 00:34:47 | Speaker 2:

Absolutely Most of this stuff All right, let's thank some donors of the day. These are the people funding the operation today. Thanks also to Jamie, Mississippi, for that awesome quiz. That was actually quite eye-opening and amazing and had a cool story.

00:34:48 - 00:34:59 | Speaker 1:

That actually turned my stomach a couple of times. And, like, usually just talking about things doesn't have that effect on me. I'm also kind of hungry right now. So I think it was like a weird combination of me wanting to eat. Sending mixed messages.

00:34:59 - 00:35:00 | Unknown:

Yeah.

00:35:00 - 00:35:03 | Speaker 1:

And then like hearing about food, but then food that actually made me kind of upset.

00:35:04 - 00:35:20 | Speaker 2:

I would have eaten most of the things on that list. Let's thank Cheyenne Lively, who's in Bellingham, Washington. Thank you, Cheyenne. Appreciate you. Jason Lumpkin is in Little Rock, Arkansas.

00:35:21 - 00:35:37 | Speaker 1:

Nice. Some famous. Hey, President's Day. Some famous presidents might have come from there. One at least, right? Yeah. The man from Hope. Yeah. Now, is President's Day now, is it still just celebrating Lincoln and Washington, or is it celebrating all U.S. presidents?

00:35:38 - 00:36:32 | Speaker 2:

I think it's just Lincoln and Washington, because I don't want to be celebrating the guy who was president before Biden. I want a line-item veto on that. When I'm doing my normal President's Day celebrations, where obviously I prepare a variety of foods. Trump logs. You make Trump logs. Including ham logs and the like. I don't want that to be me celebrating, you know, the president before Biden. So I'm going to say it's only Lincoln and Washington. Okay, I think you're right. With whatever problems they brought to the table. You got that one right. Dan Sundberg is in Seattle, Washington. Thank you, Dan. We appreciate you. Richard Adams is in West Hills, California. Sounds expensive. Probably. California? It probably is. I don't think there's any non-expensive parts left in California Becky Day is in Aberdeen

00:36:32 - 00:36:32 | Speaker 1:

Aberdeen

00:36:32 - 00:37:03 | Speaker 2:

00:37:03 - 00:37:11 | Speaker 1:

Do you think Though Are you making this assumption Based on the fact That we only might have One listener named Harrison

00:37:11 - 00:37:12 | Speaker 2:

I think

00:37:12 - 00:38:10 | Speaker 1:

With this last name Which is B-E-H-L Okay Nobody rob Harrison's house Please And this is And I'm sorry I'm actually looking While I'm stalling here Let's see in Virginia. Yes, I have an email here from Harrison in Virginia who wrote in about, so this is from a while back. It's not dated. Lincoln Logs? Lincoln's Logs. Lincoln Log is not bad. A Lincoln Log was a toy I played with. Lincoln's Logs is terrible. I'm listening to Wednesday's show from God knows when, wherein Andrew finds his formative cicada program on the American Archive of Public Broadcasting. That's right. I was looking all over for um this radio piece i helped produce so so so long ago about cicadas and i stumbled on a version of it at the american archive of public broadcasting and harrison happens to work for the library of congress and their sound recording section and knows all about it harrison also

00:38:10 - 00:39:41 | Speaker 2:

knows all about the whatever it's called golden record the thing on the voyager oh yeah that was Carl Sagan and Ann Druyan kind of helped me and a lot of people I'm sure but they're the famous ones because they've been memorialized on Radiolab uh I don't think it's is it called the golden record anyway this is this thing that's still hurtling through space and it it's analog it's got some recordings of things on there in case some other you know civilization finds it they might be able to play it and get it's like a sound of a whale the sound of a human heartbeat etc it's on the Voyager and I believe Harrison knew a lot about it because of the thing we're talking about nice thanks harrison there you go thanks harrison thanks to all of our donors of the day whether or not you know about the voyager probe um i think that's gonna wrap things up today did i did i uh remember to tell you before the show the holiday song that i was hoping we could play you know i don't think i have it here what would you like to go out with i forecasted this yesterday because we're trying to keep it island time because you know you and i go both i I mean, again, we'll be on different islands, but we'll be in the general. By court order. Hawaiian. Hawaii area. That was the first name for Hawaii Five-0, and it was a less good show. Hawaii area. It was the tri-island area. Yes. Could we play the Hawaiian Christmas song by Bing Crosby, also known as Mela Kalikimaka?

00:39:42 - 00:39:54 | Speaker 1:

I always start singing that, and I, is the place to be. I confuse Melly Kalikimaka. I can bind two songs in my head whenever I try to sing this.

00:39:54 - 00:40:00 | Speaker 2:

I also am bad with the lyrics of this song, but I do remember it from Christmas Vacation where Chevy.

00:40:00 - 00:40:37 | Speaker 1:

chase where Clark is fantasizing about his swimming pool he's going to have and he's looking out the window he just needs to get that bonus check and then in his dream Randy Quaid's cousin Eddie's character invades his dream and is standing on the diving board in a non-flattering outfit thus ruining the situation for poor Clark okay well here it is Bing Crosby with the Andrews sisters come up a lot this year on the show alright thanks for listening everyone Guess what? 00:40:37 - 00:41:08 | Speaker 2:

On the bright Hawaiian Christmas Day That's the island greeting that we send to you From the land where palm trees sway Here we know that Christmas will be green and bright The sun to shine by day And all the stars at night Melikilikimaka is a wise way To say Merry Christmas to you

00:41:08 - 00:41:44 | Speaker 3:

Melikilikimaka is a thing to say On a bright Hawaiian Christmas day That's the island greeting that we send to you From the land where palm trees sway Here we know that Christmas will be green and bright The sun to shine by day and all the stars at night Melikalikimaka is Hawaii's way to say Power out.
