You don't have to make rude noises. That's all right, I don't mind. I believe it was Benjamin Franklin who said, You have reached the end of your free trial membership at benjaminfranklinquotes.com. What a wise man. What's on the agenda, my friend-a?

00:01:14 - 00:01:23 | Speaker 4:

All right, hello, good morning, and welcome everyone to a Monday edition of TBTL, the show that just might be too beautiful to live.

00:01:23 - 00:01:28 | Speaker 5:

Gentlemen, this is Democracy Manifest.

00:01:28 - 00:02:22 | Speaker 4:

My name is Luke Burbank. I'm your host. Are you sure? That's what they said on Ask Chiefs. Coming to you from the Hollywood Broadcast Center right here in Portland, Oregon, where we've got some sun peeking through the clouds. Oh, ma, pa, it's just beautiful. And I've got a bit of an update. I figured out what kind of tree I'm looking at when I am doing the show here in the Broadcast Center. Trees. They're all around us, but who gives a s**t? It's a Norwegian maple. For those of you who were just absolutely perplexed, hanging by a thread over the weekend, just pulling your hair out thinking, what kind of tree is Luke looking at? It turns out it's a Norwegian maple. Turns out this is episode 3,654 in a collector series.

00:02:22 - 00:02:23 | Speaker 2:

Let the fun begin.

00:02:23 - 00:03:07 | Speaker 4:

It's going to be a good one. A TV station in Minneapolis was going through their archives, trying to find some tape related to a current sort of teacher strike situation. And as they were looking through old archival tape, Who did they see but one Prince Rogers Nelson? Why don't you purify yourself in the waters of Lake Minnetonka? They've uncovered a, I don't know, eight, nine-year-old prince. And it's pretty cool, so we're going to talk about that. Also, we're going to talk about... I can't believe I have this on the show sheet. We're talking about a really great lasagna that I made last night.

00:03:07 - 00:03:16 | Speaker 1:

that um it's cheesy it's delicious and kids go nuts for it i don't know if i don't know if

00:03:16 - 00:05:00 | Speaker 4:

anyone can relate to this but like i made this lasagna last night and i ate some of it and it was so good and i went to sleep excited about eating some of it today and then i woke up and I was like, can I eat cold lasagna at 8 a.m. for breakfast? Is that socially acceptable? Anyway, very proud of my vegetarian lasagna that I made. Not just in that it doesn't have meat in it, but I didn't even use noodles. I used eggplant for the noodles. It turned out really good. What's turning out not so great is a series of box flies. Get out of here, you flies. That are here in the studio. I'm going to try to open this window. Uh-oh. See if maybe it'll inspire this fly to get out of here. Get out of here, you flies. We actually had some decent weather over the weekend, which means I opened... Go, I opened the window for you. Why don't you instinctively want to go towards the fresh air? I opened my little door out to my balcony, and that was all well and good, but what it meant was a bunch of flies are now living inside my apartment. Anyway, let's not get completely bogged down Although I am kind of annoyed that this fly is not taking the hint I opened a window for him And he is just continuing to hang out on the glass Anyway, honestly, probably right up there with me identifying that tree outside Trees, they're all around us, but who gives a s*** This is one of the most exciting parts of the show Which is when I get to introduce my dear friend and the longest-running cobro of the program, maybe best known for his depictions of the tall ships. He's here to develop...

00:05:00 - 00:05:05 | Speaker 3:

next-gen products and play across various podcasting occasions and he's all out of functional

00:05:05 - 00:05:10 | Speaker 5:

need states he is andrew this shiny guy always worry walsh and he's joining me right now from

00:05:10 - 00:05:14 | Speaker 3:

the sweet cream district of seattle washington good morning my friend good morning this is an

00:05:14 - 00:05:42 | Speaker 2:

nft-fueled podcast isn't it is that what we're doing here lord knows uh it ain't based on any kind of conventional finance that is true hey i have a quick question before the um before the show gets away from me do you um do you do you like it when i ask you about drops that i notice in the intro or do you like a certain i love it mystery to be around the drops do you like is the beauty in that like not everybody knows everything about every drop because i could see

00:05:42 - 00:05:58 | Speaker 3:

an argument for that no i'm um i consider the drops just the beginning of a conversation and between you and i sorry i'm also trying to like mr miyagi this fly in here it's not going well Is that noise, is that annoying that I have the window open?

00:05:58 - 00:06:10 | Speaker 2:

Oh, I can't hear it. Well, first of all, we have the music in the background. I don't think anybody's going to be able to hear it. Well, I was curious about that first drop you played today about the Democracy Manifest. Was it Democracy Manifest? Yeah.

00:06:11 - 00:06:46 | Speaker 3:

It's actually this kind of incredible little sort of viral video. We're going to talk later about Prince and this news tape of him. And this was kind of along those lines in that it was from a news story in Australia about a con man who was finally tracked down in the 80s. And I guess the police tipped off the local TV station and they hauled this guy out of a restaurant. He was eating some Chinese food and he's yelling to the media. He does not think that they should be arresting him. This is the full tape.

00:06:46 - 00:06:59 | Speaker 5:

Gentlemen, this is Democracy Manifest. What is the charge? Eating a meal? A succulent Chinese meal. What? I thought for sure that was...

00:06:59 - 00:07:43 | Speaker 3:

A succulent Chinese meal? I thought for sure that was from a movie. I can't remember. Oh, my gosh. And this guy has kind of become, like, this is one of these things that happened, you know, in the 80s. And so it just kind of played and then went away. And then at some point, someone at the TV station found it and it got onto like YouTube and, you know, Twitter and places like that. So it's been sort of meme-ified. And I mean, this guy is a lot. I love him. He is. He says that they're grabbing him by his. I'm just going to play you the full tape. It's a minute, 21 seconds. This is a guy being hauled out of a Chinese restaurant by police in Australia. And by the way, all all indications are he was legitimately a con man. Like he had a bunch of unpaid bills, you know, here and there. But here we go.

00:07:43 - 00:07:47 | Speaker 5:

What is the charge? Eating a meal? A succulent Chinese meal?

00:07:48 - 00:07:58 | Speaker 1:

American Express investigator followed a man he thought was one of Queensland's most wanted to a valley restaurant. Minutes later, police had the business surrounded, then sent in a delegation.

00:07:58 - 00:08:15 | Speaker 5:

I'm under arrest. Look, I'm under what? Gentlemen, this is Democracy Manifest. What is the charge? Eating a meal? A succulent Chinese meal? Oh, democracy manner.

00:08:15 - 00:08:34 | Speaker 3:

Wow, okay, well, of course, because thanks, YouTube, you really helped. There's a big part where he's talking about them grabbing his testicles, which is kind of, again, I feel like he's just throwing anything against the wall. I think this might be, again, YouTube has let me down so many times, but this might be the, like, sort of less altered audio tape. Let's see.

00:08:39 - 00:08:47 | Speaker 4:

You just assured me that I could speak. Sit down inside the car. We're not assuring anything. We're under arrest. Look, I'm under what?

00:08:50 - 00:09:20 | Speaker 5:

Gentlemen, this is Democracy Manifest. Have a look at the headlock here. See that chap over there? Get your hand off my penis! This is the bloke who got me on the penis before. Why did you do this to me? For what reason? What is the charge? eating a meal a succulent Chinese meal oh that's some nice headlocks ah yes I see that you know

00:09:20 - 00:09:40 | Speaker 3:

your judo well I see that you know your judo well what accent is that is that a is he I think my I think he's a Brit who was in Australia yeah but it's I mean the guy had a career in voiceover that went untapped.

00:09:40 - 00:09:42 | Speaker 2:

He could have done an honest day's work.

00:09:43 - 00:09:57 | Speaker 3:

Well, I mean, isn't that the thing with most con artists? I speak as someone who knows a few con artists and is a borderline con artist myself. Just actually working, I think, is often less work than being a con artist. Certainly, yeah.

00:09:57 - 00:09:58 | Speaker 2:

We've talked about that before.

00:09:58 - 00:10:00 | Speaker 3:

The people who work so hard.

00:10:00 - 00:10:14 | Speaker 1:

hard to get away without working or with not working, I should say. Of course, the reason I'm stumbling is I'm avoiding taking this conversation where I always take it, which is your Jughead Joneses and your Maynard G. Krebses. Let's move on. I had to clear that from my brain.

00:10:15 - 00:10:44 | Speaker 2:

Well, I don't know if this is the work of a con artist, Andrew, or what, but things are rapidly deteriorating at this apartment building. Remember how last week I told you That while I was out of town There's like a flurry of messages About stuff going on There's the Daily Digest for today For the apartment building From someone named Ian Hey everyone, be careful in the south elevator And the P2 elevator room There are two shattered wine glasses down there And some of the shards are making their way Into the elevator

00:10:44 - 00:10:45 | Speaker 1:

Oh goodness

00:10:45 - 00:11:10 | Speaker 2:

I talked to one of the folks That works here When I was coming in through the lobby yesterday the reason i paused there was because i was coming back after a jog but i feel like i tell too many stories where i mentioned casually that i was on a jog and it seems like i'm trying to flex and i'm not so i promise you it doesn't sound like trying to not flex but then i i just

00:11:10 - 00:11:42 | Speaker 1:

figure that you go on a jog every day and i and frankly it's not impressive no i say that i said that harshly to be funny but i also am saying it honestly like i don't i don't ever i promise you at least i can't speak for for the rest of the listening audience but like i don't think everybody's like okay that's the third time luke mentioned like you were coming back from a jog people go on jogs you were people people return from jogs all the time you're not flexing well now you're sad no you know what happened i was make a muscle make a muscle send me a photo of

00:11:42 - 00:12:30 | Speaker 2:

it i'll compliment it i was um in the car with our friend from the text group john goodwin who's also a cbs producer and i this was like a couple weeks ago we must have been in hawaii or something and i mentioned oh no you know what it was los angeles and i said something like oh that this is where i did my jog today i was we were driving through the um balona watershed area in uh marvista or playa del rey or whatever it is and he goes oh nice flex yeah i think it got in my head yeah But that's a flex. I've jogged my way through some bologna before. Tell you what. Now we're talking. So I was just done setting a PR, Andrew, yesterday. And came back all sweaty and just looking kind of amazing. I'm not going to lie to you. I was walking through the lobby of the apartment building.

00:12:30 - 00:12:31 | Speaker 1:

Would you say glistening?

00:12:32 - 00:13:11 | Speaker 2:

What I actually did was I had some sweat in a can like Steve Martin uses. And is that the jerk? I don't think I've heard of sweat in a can. Pizza in a cup. uh-huh oh ran the other sweat in a can guy out of business it i think it's from the jerk where he's trying to impress he's he wants to go into like a bar or restaurant and and sort of impress the women in there so he has this sweat that's in a can that he sprays on himself so it looks like he's just been jogging and in my memory and i haven't thought about this andrew for like many many years of my life but i believe he says something like this was this was taken from a

00:13:11 - 00:14:03 | Speaker 1:

boston celtic after a double overtime game i have seen the jerk a million times in my life either i've been watching a weird edit of that or maybe it's a different movie i have something here steve martin the lonely guy restaurant oh the lonely guy i don't even know the lonely guy can i play this it's a minute long it's a minute and change let's take a listen to this hope it stands up it's day scrutiny yes all right do you have a table for dinner how many in your pie i'm alone alone so I don't can you hear what he's saying he says that he's alone he'll be dining by himself and the entire restaurant goes quiet and everybody turns to stare at him staring whole restaurant staring follow me sir do you think this is the sweat in the can

00:14:03 - 00:14:06 | Speaker 2:

the next place he goes

00:14:06 - 00:14:29 | Speaker 1:

yeah maybe I don't think we're going to be seeing sweat in a can in this scene and it's also not paying off from an audio standpoint so the point of this scene is there's literally this must be a very slapsticky movie because now there's literally a spotlight on him like he's eating alone and there's a bright spotlight on him as he dines alone this is about the discomfort of not having a date this was one

00:14:29 - 00:14:59 | Speaker 2:

of those movies that I watched remember I was talking the other day about how I would go hang on that appliance store next to my dad's sign shop and because Because they sold Laserdisc players, they also somehow had Laserdiscs, and I watched Cheech and Chong Up in Smoke once, and Rhinestone, or maybe over, I know, like sitting on a couch that was for sale as part of this appliance slash furniture store, sitting on a couch they were selling.

00:15:00 - 00:15:26 | Speaker 1:

watching a Laserdisc on a TV they were also trying to sell, sitting there watching Over the Top starring Sylvester Stallone. But I believe the same era was when I watched The Lonely Guy, which, again, I had completely, obviously, because I thought it was the jerk. Like, that's the seminal Steve Martin movie from my youth. But The Lonely Guy, I mean, I was a real Steve Martin head as a kid. I also loved The Man with Two Brains.

00:15:26 - 00:15:27 | Speaker 2:

Oh, yeah, I think I've seen that.

00:15:27 - 00:15:32 | Speaker 1:

Which was a Steve Martin film, and yeah, The Lonely Guy, which I'd totally forgotten about, and then, of course, The Jerk.

00:15:33 - 00:15:44 | Speaker 2:

Wow, this also has Charles Grodin in it. I've never even heard of this movie before, unless somebody goes back in the archives and finds a moment where you told me about this movie on TVTL, in which case I still deny it.

00:15:44 - 00:15:51 | Speaker 1:

I bet I've mentioned the sweat thing, but I bet that we didn't go on a full Lonely Guy sort of tangent.

00:15:51 - 00:16:15 | Speaker 2:

Oh, Charles Grodin is in it. yeah okay so speaking of tangents you were you were you're just coming in from a jog you're glistening your muscles aren't just large i'm not lonely at all i'm one of the most unlonely guys that's right you have arm candy on each arm which are little pieces of pez that you stick to your arms when you jog anyway so now what so i was talking to the one of the folks that works here

00:16:15 - 00:17:58 | Speaker 1:

and i said hey what happened with the whole like please come to the lobby today to talk to the police if you saw the thing that happened the other night and i kind of knew the answer to the question which was they're not going to tell me yeah in fact i knew that this person was going to tell me because her email address is like her name and then as part of her official name it says leasing professional so it's this woman's name leasing professional is who the emails come in from when you get an email from her so as a as a person who has leasing professional in the email handle she was you know professional enough to not get too specific but she just said um it was a tenant who is not going to live here anymore that was all i got uh-huh so somebody did something that got them kicked out of the building and do we think that it was violent in nature well the police showing up makes me think it was either violent towards a person or violent towards property right i mean there would be no other reason why the police would come yeah um i don't know why i would think it was less towards a person and more towards property but this was again around the same time that somebody was lighting things on fire and throwing them down the elevator shaft which also i can't get it like maybe i've been watching too much severance andrew where nothing is ever what you think it is but like there's this really awesome um kind of maintenance guy in this building and um he just seems to be very good at his job and also like a fun person to talk to and so i saw him in the building the other day right after i was lifting weights um and lifting what was they commented at the gym a surprising amount of weight for

00:17:58 - 00:18:03 | Speaker 2:

somebody with my build interesting um and then a lot of girls just like with pez stock all over

00:18:03 - 00:18:11 | Speaker 1:

your arm right no one had ever seen that and then a lot of women were like kind of writing their phone numbers down on coasters or anything they could find and just like handing them to me yeah

00:18:11 - 00:18:17 | Speaker 2:

those coasters that you find in gyms yeah yeah gym have you ever when's the last time you were

00:18:17 - 00:18:22 | Speaker 1:

at a gym andrew you're you're thinking in pre-pandemic brain sorry no no i i'm agreeing

00:18:22 - 00:18:27 | Speaker 2:

with you i'm saying yes embarrass yourself yet again gym coaster situation but so i'm talking

00:18:27 - 00:21:03 | Speaker 1:

to the maintenance guy and i go hey what happened with the elevator someone lit something on fire or something he goes what because i didn't hear about that at all and i'm thinking don't you think if there's a person who would know about the elevator being broken because of some kind of vandalism it'd be the guy who does the maintenance in the building i mean is there just one guy though i mean maybe there's the only one i've ever seen it's not a huge apartment building and also it's like he's got to be on an all staff like he's the sort of physical plant guy And something happened to the physical Why aren't you on the Slack dude They do have a Slack by the way As you know me I'm avoiding it like the plague It's working out for me too Because I completely missed the memo That I had to do an interview with a singer From South Africa this morning at 9 Andrew that I had no idea was happening For Livewire Because of my Slack channel avoidance Just know that I am Burning bridges at multiple job sites It's not just TBTL But anyway, I just thought it was strange that this guy would, I mean, I just live here and I knew about this. He works here on things like the elevator and has not heard about this, which then had me thinking, is it a cover up? Is he, you know, like, like it just, if I would have seen like a fly crawl up the side of his face or something, I would have known. I mean, I'm in a Jordan Peele film. Like it was weird. I, um... And you mentioned something a moment ago, and it reminded me of something that I heard on a podcast this weekend. And I'm oh, I know what I want to tell you. First of all, quick build up here for this. Hey, Luke, have you heard of these things called podcasts? They are amazing. I say that half joking because the truth is, even though I work in podcasting and we've talked about this on the show, I'm not really a connoisseur or that's not even really the word I'm looking for. I'm not somebody who podcasts are the future of show business. I'm not somebody who consumes a lot of podcasts because I've been obsessed with the Dan Lebitard show for the past few years, and they release so much content. And even though I don't love all of it, I feel this obsession to stay up to date on it, right? Maybe some listeners can associate with that. We are living in the midst of a podcast boom. And if you think that TBTL releases a lot of content daily, man, these guys are releasing just, I don't know, five hours a day or something like that, and I will find myself trying to catch up. And then something happened during this move where I'm just like, I don't have time to crawl into that world right now. I have other things to do. Started listening to the radio more.

00:21:03 - 00:21:12 | Speaker 2:

Which is kind of surprising to me because I feel like you're doing a lot of tasks like painting and things like that that I would think it's like, you know, put it on Levitard and rip the knob off.

00:21:12 - 00:24:10 | Speaker 1:

You know, there's probably a little bit more to it. I think I've just saturated myself. And I don't know if the show is changing, if I am changing, maybe both. But for some reason, when I was coming over here to do projects before we moved into this place, I would just was it felt like, hey, if I'm painting, I should listen to the radio. I liked the idea of listening to the radio. So I started listening to a lot of KEXP, something that I have not done a lot of in my life. And though I know it's like a it's a treasure of a radio station here in Seattle. And when you leave Seattle, people ask you about KEXP. And I'm just like, yeah, I don't really listen to it much. Been listening to a lot of that. And then this weekend, I had another painting project. In fact, I painted our bathroom a very rich peacock blue color, which is a lot, but Genevieve is accenting it perfectly with some towels that offset it and some shelving. We're very excited about this. It was a good painting job by me, if I can say so. Also, I was glistening with arm candy glued to me while I was painting. Stay in your lane. i was um so i've been just like consuming mass quantities of podcasts i've been listening to um our boy sam dingman's show which i'm a year late to the the rumor um i i've been listening to a lot of this um slate podcast called one year or they take one year and then they will spend i don't know maybe 10 episodes just like telling you one story from that year and their latest one was the year of 1995 and so I've been hearing about kind of news stories that I didn't know about from 1995 kind of deep dives on things very interesting stuff but I was also catching up on on the media one of my favorite go-to's for years and years and years that had fallen by the wayside for me this is such a bad power outlook all of this build-up about me listening to this new thing called podcasts is just to say something happened on the media that I think you will appreciate They were talking about Hawaii It's interesting that you're playing music here Because in a certain way you're playing the wrong music I'm just playing the theme to On the Media I know They're talking about Hawaii It was the one year anniversary of the Of the The false alarm nuclear I think four year anniversary right? Oh was it Oh of course it wasn't one year ago Yeah it was a four year anniversary Either way they were talking about the anniversary of it and they start sneaking up this music in the background, and it's like at first I'm not paying that much attention, and then it's like really familiar to me, and I can't quite place it, and then all of a sudden I realize White Lotus. They're playing that wackadoo music from White Lotus, and my God, did it set the perfect tone. If you haven't seen White Lotus, I'm sorry you can't go along with us on this ride, but Luke, it was perfect because it's got that menacing sound to it, and in the back of my brain, And I had it connected to Hawaii and it was talking about a scary time in Hawaii when there was a false alarm of a nuclear threat. Was it, I believe?

00:24:11 - 00:24:21 | Speaker 1:

And having that music just sneak uncommented on sneak up in the background was just like, I feel like that was very Luke Burbank appreciation territory.

00:24:21 - 00:24:32 | Speaker 2:

I will say that I can't think of a show that where the music was more kind of kind of a part of the whole vibe.

00:24:32 - 00:24:41 | Speaker 1:

Because during the TV show, they had it playing constantly. I loved what they were doing with it. It was so ominous, and it was always playing, it seemed like.

00:24:43 - 00:24:59 | Speaker 2:

It was always just building the tension. You were like, when is the manager of this hotel just going to fully go off his nut? Right, exactly. Also, my internet is being very weird, Andrew. I'm sorry if you're hearing some sort of less than great audio from me. Like, I'm just trying to play this.

00:25:00 - 00:25:36 | Speaker 1:

silly youtube video and it doesn't even want to like cooperate with me you know um this is a you want to talk about tangents i didn't realize this but do you know that the movie no country for old men has no music in it no i didn't realize that isn't that wild i was like reading something this weekend about it and somebody was you know sort of making the case that it's arguably the best coen brothers movie and they said one of the things about the movie that's just so kind of effective and out there is that it has no music in it i i mean that that movie has its own

00:25:36 - 00:25:49 | Speaker 2:

vibe so i guess i'm not like totally blown over it's almost more like you just gave me another puzzle piece to that movie like ah yes no music it is that is a have you seen that i mean i've

00:25:49 - 00:25:53 | Speaker 1:

seen it years ago it made me want to go back and re-watch it uh-huh it's a heavy watch though

00:25:53 - 00:25:58 | Speaker 2:

that's the thing it really is a good movie but it's a really really heavy watch and it's not

00:25:58 - 00:26:53 | Speaker 1:

especially linear well yeah which i think i give the coen brothers a pass on the coen brothers and paul thomas anderson which i think is ironic because it may have been the same year that there will be blood came out i think so which was also kind of a not super especially linear film or at least not a film that somebody has sort of like carefully placed in some sort of box and then handed to me so that I can like easily consume it. And I usually don't do well with that kind of entertainment. Like if I've got to like suspend my disbelief to a certain degree or whatever, it's like I get kind of distracted. But those were two films, There Will Be Blood and No Country for Old Men, that were sort of challenging me as a viewer, but I just loved both of them Because the people on the screen were, I couldn't sort of turn my eyes away from what was going on. So I was just along for the ride.

00:26:54 - 00:28:49 | Speaker 2:

Yeah, you know, I think the P.T. Anderson one, I just like P.T. Anderson's project so much that I think I must have seen that in the theater. No Country for Old Men is the Coen Brothers one. Yeah, There Will Be Blood. There Will Be Blood. You just said it five times and I was blanking on it already. but again i think it's because those movies do take up a lot of the same space in my brain and i can't separate them out um but like there will be blood like it took me a while just to like acknowledge the fact that i straight up don't like that movie and it's okay for me not to like all paul thomas anderson's movies right like it's just too much scenery chewing i just it didn't it didn't really hold me i think i doubted myself the first time i saw it and then the more i thought about i'm like no it's okay for me not to like it and i'm not saying it's a bad movie but i just don't think i heard the song andrew what song people can like different things oh that's right i have heard that song i've heard the remix too that was one thing uh one of these uh podcasts about the year 1995 was all about the macarena and i macarena hey macarena yeah it was a fascinating i mean this show is really really well done um and some of the stories you you wouldn't be familiar with but then some are very pop culture like Macarena and uh one thing that I was not ready for or that I hadn't really calculated before hitting play on this hour-long deep dive on the song is I'm gonna hear a lot of this song and when this podcast is over the song will not stop in my head so there I am like painting or un you know taking the masking tape off this bathroom and and doing touch i'm hey masking tape yeah and it's just like in your brain like the earworm like just like kills you more and more like just slowly by the end you're just like macarena like you're just you're so mad at yourself for having that song in your head

00:28:49 - 00:29:30 | Speaker 1:

the idea of you angrily singing the macarena to yourself as you're doing home improving is kind of delightful to me for some reason you can see where there's a song to get rid of earworm because there's like oh yeah the a song that's supposed to uh actually kind of like it's and i forget what it is but there's a song that is sort of presented as the way to get rid of an earworm although this they're saying happy birthday to you might work god save the queen the a-team theme theme sledgehammer by peter gabriel really mental floss what if macarena is on this list

00:29:30 - 00:29:42 | Speaker 2:

like well i mean why are they are they sure that these are songs that will like erase the other song but not implant themselves on your brain right like you want to walk around with sledge

00:29:42 - 00:29:59 | Speaker 1:

hammer by peter gabriel in your head for the rest of your life oh shoot i think i might have that in my head now i never liked that song and i found the video very upsetting yeah it's kind of one of those like it's like it's sort of almost stop motion animation right or something i think it is yeah

00:30:00 - 00:30:03 | Speaker 2:

Isn't it like kind of claiming it's like use of some claymation and other stop motion?

00:30:03 - 00:30:17 | Speaker 1:

Yeah, I don't know. It gave me a bad everything gave me a bad feeling as a kid. It turns out and that sledgehammer by Peter Gabriel was just one of those one of those things. You know, it gave me a bad feeling last night. Andrew was realizing that Bob Costas has bad takes on race.

00:30:17 - 00:30:49 | Speaker 2:

This is about the text messages you sent me last night, isn't it? Or is it not? You were suggesting that I watch some sports show where they were interviewing our new starting pitcher. On the fantasy football team Fantasy baseball team Max Scherzer That's the first thing I've got to figure out before the draft tomorrow Am I playing fantasy football or am I playing fantasy baseball But you were saying that you were watching a Max Scherzer interview That it first seemed like something you'd recommend And then the more you watched you decided you wouldn't recommend it Is that related to this Bob Costas thing?

00:30:49 - 00:31:51 | Speaker 1:

Yeah, it's this Bob Costas show that I was excited about When it sort of came back to HBO And I believe what I said when I referenced this a couple weeks ago was it was a good show where he was talking to I believe it might have been NFL players about the sort of labor dispute in the NFL or pro athletes. And I just thought it was cool that he was having people on who actually played the sport and giving them the space to talk about it. And they were primarily black men. It just seemed like it was an interesting conversation around this topic. And I just have always loved Bob Costas. Like from being a little kid, he was really sort of the voice of many sports to me. And then last night, so yeah, it starts with an interview with Max Scherzer, the pitcher for the New York Mets, who also happens to be on our fantasy baseball team. And Max Scherzer actually came off as a pretty smart, interesting guy to me. So that's when I was texting you, you should watch this. Because now you and I have some connection to Max Scherzer.

00:31:51 - 00:31:54 | Speaker 2:

Because we traded away a third round draft pick.

00:31:54 - 00:34:52 | Speaker 1:

By the way, good negotiating on that. I watched that unfold in real time. You have a real Jerry DePoto vibe over there. Because, like, our guy Joe was like— Because everybody's yelling at me that I have to do more. Everybody wants you to get one more bat in the lineup? Yeah. No, but, I mean, you negotiated. Like, I think that, you know, our guy Joe was trying to get a first or second pick for Max Scherzer, and you got him down to a third-round pick. I thought that was cagey of you. But so I'm texting you like, oh, Max Scherzer, our guy, our close personal friend, Max Scherzer, is on this Bob Costas show. And so that was all good. And then it shifts to a kind of roundtable discussion with Bomani Jones. Oh, I love him. I love him, too. The guy's really freaking smart. And like Bomani Jones and J.J. Redick, who was an NBA player for many years and played for Duke, and a guy who was like the GM of the Florida Marlins at one point, I think, or the Rays, who I think was just brought in to be like, maybe he's known to have conservative takes or something. and then a writer who I wasn't super familiar with before. I think her name was Candice something. So this is sort of the roundtable, and the conversation comes up basically around Duke basketball. Duke basketball is an interesting phenomenon because it's sort of been known as the school where a lot of white guys are still competitive at the college basketball, at the D1 level. And Bomani Jones was basically making the point that, like because they were talking about the retirement of of coach Krzyzewski and just kind of like the the fact that what there are a lot of white people who tend to kind of connect with Duke didn't necessarily go there because Duke has had this long run going back to Bobby Hurley and Cherokee Parks and Christian Leitner and Steve Wojciechowski and just like a lot the reason I can name these people off top of my head Andrew is because I was a white kid who played basketball who noted where the three or four decent white players were right and so bomani jones is just kind of making this point and i think it's a very obvious point and then it's like um jj reddick who i actually really like jj reddick he has a podcast he does i think jj reddick is a really interesting dude but maybe they told jj you're supposed to disagree with this or jj is a white guy who played for duke so it's that adds you know a layer of complication but he's sort of like disagreeing with the notion that white people are that white fans tend to notice where there are white players and he's trying to he's trying to say that that's not the case and then Bob Costas just comes in with the couple of the worst takes ever which was that because the Boston Celtics of a certain era come up Amani Jones brings up the Boston Celtics of the kind of Larry Bird phase of the Boston Celtics and it was a known thing then that a lot of white people were kind of rooting for the Celtics Because their main dude was a white guy

00:34:52 - 00:34:59 | Speaker 1:

Whereas the Lakers were a very sort of black team With Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and stuff And these are just things that are known

00:35:00 - 00:35:40 | Speaker 2:

I think and Bob Costas is like well how Could Red Auerbach he was the Coach of the Celtics how could Red Auerbach Be racist because he also drafted Black players it's like that's not the Point like it was And then there was just like three or four more things That Bob Costas said that just sound exactly like You're like not Actively racist uncle but Just someone who doesn't understand How these Like what's really going on In the world like somebody who thinks you can't be Racist because you're a white coach can't have some subtle racism or some casual racism going on because they also coached black players would a racist nba coach coach black players it's like yeah they totally would like

00:35:40 - 00:36:25 | Speaker 1:

who's the um former clippers owner um donald sterling right yeah he he famously would a racist owner have black players like yeah right yeah of course and he was very racist and the reason um he's on my mind by the way luke and i was actually thinking about this while i was watching it whether or not this would be something that you would enjoy or not because you know I don't know a lot about sports writ large but I certainly know nothing about basketball I didn't grow up watching basketball I just I know nothing about basketball I was at a basketball game with some friends a college game um here at the UW uh a couple of months ago and um I literally didn't know if it was like quarters or periods now in your defense or whatever college is different than the NBA so

00:36:25 - 00:36:26 | Speaker 2:

That is a little confusing.

00:36:26 - 00:36:36 | Speaker 1:

Yeah, and then somebody told me, and then I forgot. But anyway, there's another Adam McKay project out that came out, I think, in the past couple of weeks or something, called The Winning Season.

00:36:37 - 00:36:51 | Speaker 2:

Yes, the project that destroyed the relationship. What's that? The project that destroyed the relationship of John C. Reilly and Will Ferrell, apparently. Really? Yeah. And Adam McKay.

00:36:51 - 00:37:43 | Speaker 1:

I haven't gotten to the Will Ferrell part yet, but I know that he's going to be in it at some point. I watched the first episode last night. I loved it. If you like, you know, that Adam McKay style of storytelling, like he has his fingerprints all over it as the director and creator of this show. It's about the it's about the rise of the Lakers, the Showtime Lakers with Jerry Buss. and yes and and it's very much you know talks about the the racism at the time and and the and the you know racism in the league at the time and anyway it's I loved it but it was also kind of like an education to me as somebody who understood who you know watched this stuff and was very into it I don't know if it would hold up for you or not Luke but I think you generally like Adam McKay stuff so you should at least give it a shot and share your thoughts on it but what is what are these rumors about it those three guys together wait they those three guys together they don't

00:37:43 - 00:38:17 | Speaker 2:

they're not getting along now like they are because will ferrell wanted to play jerry bus this was a will ferrell adam mckay project and because will ferrell's an la guy he's like obsessed with you know he went to usc he's obsessed with all things los angeles sports and will ferrell was supposed to play i don't i don't i refuse to call jerry bus dr jerry bus I think he got some kind of like, you know, sports, like sports management degree at some point, unless he was a medical doctor and that was lost in the movie that he somebody asks him about it.

00:38:17 - 00:38:22 | Speaker 1:

And he says that he actually has a science background, that he was a doctor of some sort of he has a doctor in some sort of.

00:38:22 - 00:39:18 | Speaker 2:

Well, OK, then I'll allow it. So, Dr. Jerry Buss, I assumed it was. I mean, Jerry Buss was just a classic figure. I mean, he I think he won the money to buy the Lakers in a poker game or something like crazy. like he was a real character but so Will Ferrell and Adam McKay this is what I heard we're working on this project and Will Ferrell was supposed to play Dr. Jerry Buss and I don't know how far they got into shooting it if it was just maybe they were going through the script or they were filming some little test things but it Adam McKay realized that Will Ferrell was not the right guy for playing dr jerry buss and went and cast um john c riley without telling will ferrell the story goes and adam mccain will ferrell have not talked since then there is a there is a titanic falling out between the two of them over this very tv project i don't know how i you know i said to

00:39:18 - 00:39:53 | Speaker 1:

you i know that he's gonna appear in it later i guess i was totally wrong about that i think i just heard people saying his name here and there so i assumed he was in this well you know what maybe that was um no i maybe what i read was was um uh overblown no i mean everything i type in everything i type in when i type in winning time and will ferrell is just like it's story after story after story about how this apparently ended the relationship exactly as you said but like that is i'm first of all i guess i shouldn't be shocked that a pop culture story missed me but like that's a huge i miss me with that yeah will ferrell and adam mckay i mean that's a huge

00:39:53 - 00:40:00 | Speaker 2:

that's a huge partnership there i know i made it it like really kind of emotionally impacted me in a

00:40:00 - 00:40:47 | Speaker 1:

way that i wouldn't have expected it to this is from a deadline adam mckay details will ferrell breakup over hbo's laker series casting he took it as a way deeper hurt than i ever imagined wow i mean like like i don't want to live in a world where adam mckay and will ferrell aren't friends i mean one of the first viral videos the landlord yeah where where will ferrell is getting yelled that by this little cute baby named pearl that's adam mckay's kid yeah that was like the original like funny or die i don't even know if funny or die like existed before that video but i just like i don't know like i i want i want those two guys to fix whatever's broken between them because i like the world better where they are getting along and john c riley will ferrell and john c

00:40:47 - 00:41:50 | Speaker 2:

riley like i know stepbrothers right oh my god i mean so many things i think of them as yeah i mean i feel like so many things maybe stepbrothers is all that pops to mind right now but um i'm not great on my feet on these things but um yeah that is that is really shocking now that's going to live with me as i as i continue to watch this because i'm thinking about because i really enjoyed the vibe of this movie and it's like it definitely you know does that thing that mckay does all the time where almost all of the characters break the fourth wall and will start talking to you the viewer to explain what's going on here and there or to explain their thought process in a scene yeah um that stuff can that stuff can be rough if it's not done well but i feel like it's done really well here but there's so much um there's just so much energy in this and positive energy and sort of positive vibes that it really bums me out to think of like john c riley having to manage his relationship with will ferrell while playing this over the top character with positive energy that's that's a bummer i mean i love john c reilly's work

00:41:50 - 00:42:03 | Speaker 1:

obviously and he seems from what i've observed you know like i've chatted with him at the dog park in la briefly so i don't know if that if that makes us best friends i mean it makes us

00:42:03 - 00:42:09 | Speaker 2:

probably as he once famously said did we just become best friends right exactly i had just

00:42:09 - 00:44:02 | Speaker 1:

recently finished a jog andrew and he right yeah kind of how he's he identifies as straight typically but something inside him was stirring based on how sure attractive i looked um but like it's sort of not fair to john c reilly but i wonder i guess what's interesting to me is that john c reilly took the gig like he must have known this is uh what a deadline say in an in-depth vanity fair interview mckay set out how his decision to cast ferrell's best friend john c riley as jerry buss um was the culmination of years of creative differences and led to a split that has yet to be repaired feral took it as a way deeper hurt than i ever imagined i tried to reach out to him and i reminded him of some slights that were thrown my way that were never apologized for said mckay the whole time it was like i was saying it out loud let's not become an episode of behind the music don't let it happen and it happened now i it's like if i'm john c riley and i know about this and like adam mckay calls me and says hey do you want to play jerry bus in this cool thing but i'm also friends with will ferrell and i know that it's like making will ferrell mad i i don't know i feel like i wouldn't take the gig i mean you know me There is no gig I wouldn't take I mean I would step over your Comatose body Andrew To you know make $20 To fill in on After these messages because I'm a bad example but No but I mean like you know John C. Reilly is obviously Like an incredibly successful Actor and I wonder if he struggled At all with the decision and I mentioned He's incredibly successful because if he were to pass on This it wouldn't be like his career is done or something yeah so I wonder if he struggled with the decision at all to take the role or maybe he didn't know I mean I guess it's possible that he didn't he didn't know but like that would seem like that'd

00:44:02 - 00:45:23 | Speaker 2:

be kind of a tough call right yeah certainly and I don't know we don't know enough about their their interpersonal relationships right like the three of these people together because you know you're getting these quotes from Adam McKay about his conversations with Will Ferrell but we don't know I mean you know any relationship especially like a relationship with more than two people like this a partnership and a friendship that goes back so many years like you just don't know the subtle details of it right like i i'm thinking of something that i don't want to say but like you and i had backstage conversations with like guests on tbtl who would give us a little bit of an inside scoop on like you know their friends and partners who they work with but just say oh well his personality is he can get a little itchy about this or you know like a little sensitive about that and then that puts everything else into context for you and you're like oh i would never picture that because i only know this person as the performer but of course we're all humans and we all have our various little foibles and quirks and and you know buttons that get pushed and what have you So we don't know enough about exactly how these three people interact. So so who knows? And it could have been one of those things where, like you said, John C. Reilly might not have known the full scope of it when he embarked on it. And then it became more clear. But it was too late because I'm with you. It's not like John C. Reilly is like, well, I got to take this like I have to take this job because they might not call me again. You know, I don't think that's where he is in his career.

00:45:24 - 00:46:18 | Speaker 1:

Well, the plot thickens a little bit. I'm still reading from this Deadline article. By the way, I know you don't miss a lot About living in LA, Andrew But it is kind of fun, the industry Like the trades You know, you and I always make the joke about like Mouse House, Lexi, Ankles, Project It's just funny to me that they still do that Like even Deadline Which is, you know, it's not I don't believe it's some, you know Hundred-year-old trade McKay's new banner, Hyper Object Industries Took on the HBO miniseries And it was at this point that mckay made the decision to cast riley for the series whilst not informing will ferrell michael shannon was set to play bus in the pilot michael shannon wow right yes i mean that's an interesting piece of casting yeah i mean you know what the funniest thing about that is is i know

00:46:18 - 00:47:49 | Speaker 2:

i can totally picture that guy he's like the big big jawed guy right yeah and the only thing agent van alden from um what was the uh prohibition era oh oh not peaky blinders um boardwalk empire boardwalk that's funny yeah he's he's famous for so many things and i can't even remember like what i would have seen the most of him in but whenever i think of him and this is almost like an inside joke between me and genevieve all i can ever picture him in is my this is my point of reference for him he's in some very small film where he's like a down and out shopkeeper who dresses up like a sasquatch at night and runs and somebody accidentally i think somebody accidentally sees him and it creates all kinds of stir in this very small community uh during during the holidays i want to say we need to look this up sort of like a crypto zoological free kind of yeah you know we play a drop from um better off ted where some co-worker says the way i the way i blow off steam after work is i dress up like a bear and i go out in the neighborhood scaring people that's kind of what this um movie is all about only i think it's an accident i think he for some reason dresses up like a sasquatch around the holidays doesn't want to be seen but than is seen. Are you looking this up while I am? No, I'm not. Yeah, you can't mess with your internet right now.

00:47:49 - 00:47:52 | Speaker 1:

Well, my errand is being really janky today. I'm sorry.

00:47:52 - 00:48:00 | Speaker 2:

I want to find this and I want to play the trailer for you at some point during today's show and we're going to see how close I was to getting this right. But anyway, that's my touch point.

00:48:00 - 00:48:47 | Speaker 1:

I will watch that movie, by the way, since I'm done with Severance. Just to kind of put a sort of bow on the rest of this Will Ferrell thing, although I've already explained it so I don't need to overly explain it. But this is the last thing that um adam mckay says the truth is the way the show was always going to be done it's hyper realistic and ferrell just doesn't look like jerry bus and he's not the vibe of of a jerry bus added mckay like what a what an awkward thing what an awkward conversation like to realize that you know that like will ferrell doesn't have the jerry bus vibe even though this is probably be like will ferrell's dream job because of his love his well-known love of basketball and los angeles and this is sort of the intersection of that i'm going to play this trailer for you now

00:48:47 - 00:48:57 | Speaker 2:

it's called pottersville by the way but am i right though when you were explaining this to me he asked will ferrell and then pulled back or he never asked will ferrell and will ferrell just

00:48:57 - 00:49:38 | Speaker 1:

felt like he was entitled what i'm what i'm getting from this one article and i should go read the longer i think it's like in gq or whatever reread it because i think i read it at some point is that he knew will ferrell wanted to play the role he and will ferrell are long-time collaborators and he didn't think that will was right for the role i don't know if it ever got to the point where he said will you can be jerry buss but it was something about that like him kind of going around behind his back and casting, I guess, initially Michael Shannon and then later John C. Reilly in this role that he knew that Will Ferrell would have like really wanted to play.

00:49:39 - 00:49:59 | Speaker 2:

Gotcha. By the way, I'm going to read to you the description, the one line description of this movie, because I don't know if the trailer is going to pay off. I'll try playing the sound as well. But the movie is called Pottersville. It also has Ron Perlman and Christina Hendricks. I would not have been able to tell you either of those details. I don't know why Genevieve and I watched this movie this doesn't seem like something that oh

00:50:00 - 00:50:03 | Speaker 4:

Judy Greer is in this. I was going to say, up here, Michael.

00:50:03 - 00:50:11 | Speaker 3:

Yes, Judy Greer. Okay, so, and here's the description. I'm, by the way, very proud of myself right here. Okay, I'm proud of you, too.

00:50:11 - 00:50:32 | Speaker 4:

But can I throw one thing in? Is this some sort of a subtle It's a Wonderful Life reference? Because the town of Bedford Falls in It's a Wonderful Life, and I know you haven't seen the movie, because you told me that recently, and I'm still real. That may lead to a break in our friendship along the lines of Pharrell McKay.

00:50:32 - 00:50:34 | Speaker 3:

Well, I feel like I should have been able to play Mr. Potter.

00:50:35 - 00:50:47 | Speaker 4:

Well, right. So when the alternate reality of George Bailey not being born, the town is named Pottersville. And maybe that's just a coincidence. Is this a movie have any subtle references to It's a Wonderful Life?

00:50:47 - 00:51:27 | Speaker 3:

Well, if so, I would be the absolute wrong person to ask. I guess, no, the absolute wrong person to ask wouldn't have seen either film. But I've never seen It's a Wonderful Life. You're halfway to the absolute wrong thing. Yeah, exactly. Meet me all the way in me not answering your questions. Whee! Whee! But the description here is Maynard, a beloved local businessman, is mistaken for the legendary Bigfoot during an inebriated romp through town in a makeshift gorilla costume. So I wasn't totally, I mean, I was way more right about this than I thought. Let's take a listen to this trailer. So far, so good.

00:51:27 - 00:51:34 | Speaker 1:

Hey, Park, you mind doing me a favor? Would you mind closing up tonight and running to the bank? I just want to surprise Connie, you know?

00:51:36 - 00:51:36 | Unknown:

Leonard!

00:51:37 - 00:51:39 | Speaker 1:

Connie, what's going on?

00:51:39 - 00:51:41 | Speaker 2:

I think we need to take some time apart and think about what we really want.

00:51:42 - 00:52:20 | Speaker 3:

So clearly he walks in. You can tell from the audio, right, that he walks in on his wife or partner there. But the scene that you're picturing is probably two people in bed, but that is not the case. Actually, there is a furry vibe here. we see his wife and some other partner dressed up in their furry costumes. And they're just standing in the middle of the room sort of embracing. She is a bunny, and the other person is a wolf. So he apparently gets really drunk. He finds a costume. I don't know if this is to win his wife back. So he dresses up like a gorilla.

00:52:20 - 00:52:26 | Speaker 1:

to have witnessed what they're calling well a Bigfoot sighting

00:52:26 - 00:52:39 | Speaker 3:

yeah so apparently he gets blackout drunk runs around the town does a bunch of stuff in a gorilla outfit everybody thinks it's a Bigfoot and then the town is all abuzz on finding this

00:52:39 - 00:53:19 | Speaker 4:

this is this has strong it's a wonderful life overtones the town's people forgive Maynard and proceed to his store to apologize and pay their debts which that's a whole it's a wonderful life thing because you know he runs the bailey savings and loan which is kind of like a little bank and mr potter is trying to steal all of his business away and and crush him so that mr potter will have the only bank in town and there's a a scene where a very famous scene where jimmy stewart is trying to sort of reason with his customers that like the way that he can't give all of them their money at the same time like he's like that's not how it works as a famous

00:53:19 - 00:53:25 | Speaker 5:

it's not here it's in it's in it's in his home and in your home and your home like he's trying

00:53:25 - 00:53:37 | Speaker 4:

to explain banking to these folks uh which uh feels as i'm reading the description of this this is definitely like uh i actually would watch this film at christmas time andrew was it was it kind

00:53:37 - 00:53:52 | Speaker 3:

of entertaining yeah i remember just being very cozy you know like uncomplicated not super challenging and and just cozy and it's got michael shannon in it and that is why whenever anybody says do you like michael shannon i say well i'm kind of a pottersville head oh from pottersville

00:53:52 - 00:54:20 | Speaker 4:

yeah exactly speaking of cozy andrew i mean this is the exact time of year to really just hunker down with some lasagna you know the famous that famous summertime lasagna that everyone's talking about um but i did i was really happy with how that turned out um it's 54 minutes into the show is where we're at. We have not yet taken our first break. So let's take our first break and then I'll talk for 54 more minutes about my lasagna coming up here on TVTL.

00:54:21 - 00:54:33 | Speaker 2:

We was hoping for some razzle-dazzle. Razzle-dazzle. That's right, man. Razzle-dazzle. On your mark. On your mark. Get set. Get set. Now ready. Ready. Go. Everybody razzle-dazzle.

00:54:34 - 00:54:59 | Speaker 4:

Everybody razzle-dazzle. Hey, let's thank some dazzling donors. Everybody razzle-dazzle. These are the wonderful, generous people who have waited 55 minutes and 30-odd seconds to hear us thank them and honor them for their dazzling donation of dough that they're doing. Of course, we're talking about John Paxton in Seattle, Washington. Hey, fellas. Thanks for helping us get through another year.

00:55:00 - 00:55:30 | Speaker 2:

i recently got married to another 10 in january wow and uh congratulations and she um my wife whoa i don't know should i turn that up i didn't hear it turn what up uh-huh my wife also that's not even like it's not even a good version yeah what's going on with that it's distorted and it's clipped i don't know that's my wife there i i have two and one of them is for some reason for Techno-Gee with Spreadshee.

00:55:30 - 00:55:34 | Speaker 3:

That's my wife. Is that one of them on our little Too Beautiful to Live sound machine?

00:55:35 - 00:56:02 | Speaker 2:

Let's see. No, I don't think so. I'm just replacing that. The wrong one. Yeah, that was weird. Sorry about that. Anyway. There we go. You're welcome, John, and John's wife, a.k.a. Do we see the name of John's beloved? No, we don't. But anyway, this is going out to both of you in full fidelity. That's my wife. That was also still kind of loud. That's my wife.

00:56:05 - 00:56:06 | Speaker 3:

What are we doing?

00:56:06 - 00:56:07 | Speaker 2:

Hey, you know what, John? You're paying for it.

00:56:08 - 00:56:21 | Speaker 3:

Hey, John, I think it's clear that your money went to good use this year, and we look forward to your dazzling donation this coming May as well. Because, you know, clearly all the money goes back into the production of the show.

00:56:21 - 00:56:48 | Speaker 2:

everyone pretend that I just men in black to you and I put that forget me now shot up and you don't remember, this is the first time you're hearing this, hey let's thank John Paxton in Seattle, Washington, John says hey fellas, thanks for helping us get through another year I recently got married to another 10 in January and she please play the that's my wife

00:56:48 - 00:56:49 | Speaker 1:

drop, that's my wife

00:56:49 - 00:57:18 | Speaker 2:

She was the one that introduced me to TBTL Early when we were dating We listen to most episodes together While we're going for walks or cooking We even use the TBTL intro song As our wedding dinner Whoa Entrance music What? Whoa Thank God I didn't screw up the audio on this Because it sounds like John and his wife Are extremely Invested in the TBTL experience

00:57:18 - 00:57:40 | Speaker 3:

So does this Is there a word for, like in TBTL parlance, when somebody introduces TBTL to somebody else, do they become like a TBTL wife? A TBTL wife? That's my wife. It's interesting because it sounds like John married maybe his TBTL daddy. That's hard to say.

00:57:41 - 00:57:53 | Speaker 2:

Yeah. He says, we listen to most episodes together while we're going for walks or cooking. We even used the TBTL intro song as our wedding, dinner, entrance music. The two other tens in the crowd loved it.

00:57:53 - 00:57:56 | Speaker 3:

Wow, that was our entire audience. Holy shit.

00:57:56 - 00:58:27 | Speaker 2:

Thank God a plane didn't have that wedding reception. We would have been down like 70% of our audience. The two other tens in the crowd loved it. The rest were confused as to why they were so excited about the music. Last year, I asked a convoluted question. If I should call my new mother-in-law my TBTL granddaddy, and even though it's true, I would not recommend.

00:58:27 - 00:58:31 | Speaker 3:

Emphasis on not. That's my wife. I would not recommend. So it sounds like that went well.

00:58:32 - 00:58:33 | Speaker 2:

Should you do that?

00:58:33 - 00:58:36 | Speaker 3:

Sadly, the answer is not yes. Yes.

00:58:36 - 00:58:58 | Speaker 2:

Well, thank you, John, and your wife, who is apparently in some sort of witness protection program. Thank you for supporting the show. So I wish I – is there video of y'all coming in to the Catch My Disease song from your wedding? Did anyone film it on their phone? I would love to see that. That's very cool.

00:58:59 - 00:59:02 | Speaker 3:

And two people just freaking out. I know, right?

00:59:02 - 00:59:17 | Speaker 2:

Thankfully, it's a catchy enough song that you don't – if you didn't get the TBTL reference, it would just be like, hey, this is a peppy song that they're coming into. So anyway, thank you so much for supporting the show. We really do appreciate it. Maestro. On your mark.

00:59:17 - 00:59:23 | Speaker 3:

On your mark. Get set. Get set. Now ready. Ready. Go. Everybody rattle, dattle.

00:59:24 - 01:01:03 | Speaker 2:

Everybody rattle. A lot of pressure on Petey Lawrence Whirl. Better play us at your wedding, Petey, in Madison, Wisconsin. Really, John and his wife with the two tens at the wedding really set the bar pretty high for these dazzling donors. Let's see what Petey's got to say. Petey says, I'm thankful for the friendos we've made through this fake radio show. If you like new music and classic tracks, listen to Petey's radio show, Rock and Roll Over on 91.7 WSUM in Madison, Wisconsin. or online at WSUM.org every Tuesday from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. Central Time. While you're there, hit the donate button at the top of the page to keep this virtual student-run community station alive for years to come as we celebrate the memory of our recently departed founding member, Dave Black. Hail and farewell to a great friendo. Also, special shout-out to Mary, my wife. God, I wish I had a drop for that. That's my wife. What if I just played it? Just 1,000% blowed out again. Special shout-out to Mary, my wife, for letting me hijack the dazzling donor message to promote my radio show. Well, you know what? I said a lot of pressure on Petey, and Petey rose to the challenge. That's a great donor message. So everyone go listen to Rock and Roll Over on 91.7 WSUM Madison tomorrow morning from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. Central Time.

01:01:03 - 01:01:19 | Speaker 1:

So that would be 4 a.m. our time, I believe. I'll Tivo it. Yeah, I was going to say I was just rereading the message to see are these archived? Can I listen on demand? But if you're on the East Coast or if you're in Europe, it's perfect timing. It's perfect timing.

01:01:19 - 01:01:33 | Speaker 2:

If you're one of our listeners, and if you're that listener who's moving to the Netherlands, maybe named Marshall, that's drive time for you, right?

01:01:34 - 01:01:51 | Speaker 1:

Well, it's drive time. I mean, 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. is kind of a good radio spot here in the States, right? It is. You're catching people, you know, assuming this is, yeah, this is going out over the air. you're catching people in their cars often commuting to work when for those of us who still commute to work which I don't know why I said us because I'm not one of those people

01:01:51 - 01:02:21 | Speaker 2:

what happened there I've told you about the conversation I had the first time I ever got a radio show um was on KVI and I didn't get any like extra pay for it I just wanted to do it and the program director was this guy that I really loved named Casey Keating and I was I forget how exactly the conversation unfolded but in explaining to me that he was happy to give me a weekend show he said i program my station from 6 a.m to 6 p.m monday through friday anything else

01:02:21 - 01:02:38 | Speaker 1:

that happens i don't care about that's actually i mean you kind of you kind of i mean you kind of don't want to hear that but you kind of want to hear that too though i mean knowing that the boss isn't necessarily listening or caring too much is uh it's freeing yeah it was i wonder if like

01:02:38 - 01:04:17 | Speaker 2:

if i can find i've probably if i have these i'm sure i've played them before but like the luke burbank show let's see they there was this guy named carl palmer was the um the production director so like the guy that made all of the like liners and everything for the imaging of the station and then casey actually was a noted voiceover guy in fact i think he's still like depending on where you are in america there are a lot of radio shows that have this guy casey keating as the you know it's the dan rogers show kind of thing or whatever and they like carl palmer and casey keating after i went and made the pitch i was like can i do a show on saturdays for no extra pay and casey was like uh sure i programmed my station from 6 a.m to 6 p.m he and carl just like disappeared into the production studio and then just hours later they sent me all like all this is your intro package oh wow it was like and it was like oh my god i really wish you know i have i must have tapes of this somewhere andrew like in a storage facility in bellingham i need to get them because it involved nirvana it was like the song was it had it had a record scratch in it and it was i think it maybe started with like fancy music and then like record scratched and then it went into like what's the um is it in bloom this is gonna be taken down by spotify what's the song that has nature is a whore in it

01:04:17 - 01:04:31 | Speaker 1:

is that in bloom yeah that's in bloom he's the one who likes all our pretty songs yeah i was not i wasn't trying to be difficult there i really wasn't getting it from your thing i and that's not even a dig on you uh although take it as one please but also i'm just terrible at those types

01:04:31 - 01:04:56 | Speaker 2:

of games no i wasn't doing a great job but so it starts i think it started off with like casey being very formal like this is the you're listening to kvi radio it's like it's like totally what i ripped off for the like you won't hear this on andrew's fancy public radio show right right right you still have that let's see uh fancy this was a bit i'm gonna give you

01:04:56 - 01:05:00 | Speaker 1:

some time here so as i recall this was a bit when i was l l i

01:05:00 - 01:06:44 | Speaker 2:

moved out of seattle to go down to la and produce get back into public radio as opposed to commercial radio and i was producing a public radio show down there and so we had this bit of things that you wouldn't hear on andrew's fancy public radio yeah so here's a i forgot that it's bad wait hold on i need to play something for you i was trying to dial something up here to play for you And I didn't realize how perfect it was. Hold on a second here. I need to play for you the Mike Salk Show. Oh, God. New intro. So Mike Salk is, can you, while I talk, can you look for the Mike Salk Show podcast audio on your side? So Mike Salk is a sports talk show host and actually the program director at the Seattle Sports Station here. We know Mike. I consider myself a friend of Mike to a degree or certainly a colleague or former colleague. He and Brock Huard used to do a radio show together that I was obsessed with and I loved. I think they make really good radio. I think he's got a good radio brain. He went off the air for quite some time so he could be a program director and focus on that. But he came back and he gave himself a morning show recently. Saying gave himself a morning show is a little controversial because I think some people see it that way. I actually think it made sense to get him back on the radio because he's a very popular host. But I have been dipping in every now and then to listen to his podcast or just, you know, the podcast version of his radio show. And every time I hear the intro, which spoiler alert, does have an element of ACDC in it. I think of you, Luke, because it is so it is it is so like commercial radio.

01:06:45 - 01:06:54 | Speaker 1:

So I have it here. I have our one. Yes. From a couple days ago. Good, good, good. Spring Training Wrapping Up NCAA Final Four Results.

01:06:54 - 01:06:58 | Speaker 2:

So it's going to begin with a pre-roll of him thinking into advertiser or something.

01:06:58 - 01:07:01 | Speaker 1:

I assume it will be for roofing.

01:07:01 - 01:07:03 | Speaker 2:

Salesforce.com, maybe?

01:07:04 - 01:07:18 | Speaker 1:

Somehow Salesforce is a media platform now. I don't know. No more slabjacking or state roofing over there? Let's hear. Let's see. Okay, we'll find out together. Sorry about that. Free little free ad. Again, sorry, my internet is... Oh, maybe I just want to...

01:07:18 - 01:07:27 | Speaker 3:

Thank you for listening to this hour of the Mike Salk Show, serviced by Jafco Plumbing and Sewer. Oh, Jafco. Jafco, great. Love it. Old school.

01:07:27 - 01:07:32 | Speaker 1:

That's some real quality AM radio Seattle advertising, baby.

01:07:33 - 01:07:41 | Speaker 3:

They're not just a plumbing and sewer company. Don't get me wrong. They'll fix or replace literally anything that has to do with your plumbing or sewer system. But what really makes Jafco stand out?

01:07:41 - 01:07:47 | Speaker 1:

What about like a toilet that just has like a joke fart hole in it? What can they do about that?

01:07:47 - 01:07:55 | Speaker 2:

I love that we're just giving this commercial free airplay on our station. I'm just talking over it.

01:07:55 - 01:07:59 | Speaker 1:

I'm glad it's going out to Jafco Plumbing and not Salesforce, honestly. Here we go.

01:07:59 - 01:08:01 | Speaker 2:

Jafco Plumbing and Sewer.

01:08:03 - 01:08:17 | Speaker 3:

You ready? This is the Mike Salk Show. On Seattle Sports Station. Are you ready? Powered through the Alaska Airline Studio. Streaming through the Seattle Sports app. and at seattlesports.com.

01:08:18 - 01:08:21 | Speaker 2:

Are you ready for a good day?

01:08:21 - 01:08:23 | Speaker 3:

Whoa! Whoa!

01:08:25 - 01:08:31 | Speaker 1:

Did Jay Buhner write this intro package while in a monster truck?

01:08:31 - 01:09:26 | Speaker 2:

Like, I'm laughing my ass off and I'm playing it and, like, I wouldn't make that my intro for my show, but, like, I can't explain it. I find it both absolutely hilarious but also smart. Like, I can't explain it sexually. like it's just it is a certain thing it feels a little bit like a bygone era but it makes me laugh every single time and i go on this whole journey as the show begins as i think about when they decided like this did mike i honestly i think about this every time i listen to that show i spend some time thinking has mike as a program director and radio host and producer himself like has he had this song in the back of his head for a long time where he's kind of like god that would make a good radio intro like did he hear it on the radio in the weeks leading up to knowing that he was gonna have a new show russ exactly or sean de tori or anybody who's doing production over there did they make that decision for him and he's like yeah that's fine like i'm obsessed with that

01:09:26 - 01:10:10 | Speaker 1:

question i really um not to you know grab the spotlight and place it back upon myself but now this really makes me want to find yeah that luke burbank show intro because i had absolutely i literally had no say in it they just said uh-huh this is your intro and i feel like so it was like fancy like people and then it goes like record stretch and it's like and then it's the nirvana song and then it's like here's the luke burbank show good grief or something like it was like it was actually kind of not the worst concept but it was basically like the announcer was like sad that there was about to be a thing happening with me Thank you. with me hosting a show and by the way his suspicions were correct it was are you ready

01:10:10 - 01:10:30 | Speaker 2:

for a bomber oh my goodness anyway thanks to our donors of the day for making this where possible we wouldn't be here without you hello and welcome to top story can we could we

01:10:30 - 01:10:44 | Speaker 1:

get away with like borrowing just that are you ready for a good time like from that show like how long do you think we could just play that as like the beginning of the tbtl before it gets back

01:10:44 - 01:11:12 | Speaker 2:

to mike i don't think it'll ever get somebody over there speaking of everybody be cool like you know like i say like i actually i mean i listen to the show i think mike's a really talented host yeah i'm just fascinated by that because i don't listen to a lot of stuff that begins that way anymore but um also don't don't tattle but also um i don't know i don't think it would get back to him so much as like you know just like i i thought you were asking about like the spotify implications of playing an acdc song i assume no just that small amount of it would be

01:11:12 - 01:12:04 | Speaker 1:

just that that just that shriek would be kind of it would just be fun and i'm with you by the way like i kind of love that i love throwback talk and sports radio like probably why i wasn't more successful at cairo was because i always wanted it to be kanye or something you know or like the generationals like i was trying to make it cool so that my cool friends would like hear cool music i never wanted to have the guy from acdc shrieking are you ready for a good time but my guess is the majority of the people listening to cairo fm and also espn although i guess they don't call it that anymore are more in the vibe of somebody who will get hyped from that like it's probably a smart much smarter decision than i ever made when i was you know hosting things over there and always trying to be like the coolest guy at the radio station where none of the listeners want you to be the cool guy well i had remember mine was like some

01:12:04 - 01:12:14 | Speaker 2:

sort of heavy flute breakdown. Heavy flute influenced hip hop. I think. I'm trying to remember what that was.

01:12:14 - 01:12:32 | Speaker 1:

At least you had the wisdom to walk away from the show before they fired you. You left on your terms with your, you packed up your flute hip hop and you went to LA. I waited until they fired me before I stopped doing my

01:12:32 - 01:12:40 | Speaker 2:

bullshit at night. I'm looking for this song. I think we've played it before. I don't need to give it my name. It's actually a good song. I like it. Okay. What do we want to talk about? Lasagna?

01:12:41 - 01:13:15 | Speaker 1:

Oh, yeah. Well, anyway, I just made some lasagna. It was really good. Here's the thing I want to say to folks. If you want to make a veggie lasagna and if you want to go low carb on it so that you don't use the noodles, you can use eggplant as the noodles. and I've tried this before with limited success because the eggplant has a lot of water in it but I salted it all down so it drew the water out and then I blotted it intensely so I really got the water and then roasted the eggplant and then used it as the lasagna noodles and it worked like a charm

01:13:15 - 01:13:43 | Speaker 2:

Can I tell you about my night last night? I don't know if this is interesting but it's very much an Andrew story related to cooking and also just settling in to our new place first of all i think i mentioned this on the show last week i can't believe we've only lived here for one week so far it feels like we've lived here i can't explain it just feels like a lot is happening at once and um it's only been one week since we moved into the new house and it feels kind of like a lifetime um i can't believe i haven't messed up that you're in the

01:13:43 - 01:13:48 | Speaker 1:

sweet cream district how long before that kicks in i am going to say the roosevelt neighborhood

01:13:48 - 01:16:44 | Speaker 2:

of seattle washington at some point maybe we'll see i don't know um but uh you know anyway we've been doing a lot of stuff and i think i mentioned on the show last week that i've been i was starting to feel a little bit jangled by the end of last week just generally speaking and i think something um something was aggravating me on saturday and i don't know what it was i i you know i've heard people describe panic attacks and that's not what i was having because it wasn't that severe But for most of the day, I just felt like I felt some sort of intense physical anxiety that didn't seem to be tied to anything specific in my life. You know what I mean? Like I'm going around thinking like I'm so happy. Like I literally am like I'm just so happy with this decision that we've made and I'm so happy to be here and little by little we're getting these projects done. And I'm more productive now, I guess, in my personal life than I've ever been before. Painted two rooms, got a fence built, which that just required paying for it. But, you know, just like making a lot happen here in a small amount of time, generally happy. But something was going on with my brain on Saturday where I was jangled in a pretty severe way that kind of got worse as the day went on. Sunday when I woke up. up I still had a little bit of residuals of that and then I was like kind of calming myself down but then I had my volunteer gig back in the old neighborhood and one of the things I do for that is I make a big thermos of coffee and a big thermos of hot chocolate like the big pump thermos things right so we can hand out coffee and hot chocolate to passers-by and I was worried about running late for that because I hadn't you know done this task during this time of day from my new house and I was worried about traffic getting making me late and people were relying on me etc etc and I'm in the kitchen Sunday and I look at the clock and I look at where I am and my making of these beverages and I'm like you know what everything's good look I'm ahead of time only one more pot of coffee to make uh and I'm gonna be ready to go and I hit go on my coffee bean grinder which I think you've experienced this before our coffee bean grinder is a burr grinder and it takes forever to like grind one pot of coffee it takes like a solid i'm gonna say 90 seconds to two minutes of a loud grinding sound uh which seems like forever when you're in the room with it um and i'm grinding the beans for the last pot of coffee and then when the grinder shuts off i continue to hear some loud sizzling sound and i can't figure out what it is i spin around my pot of hot chocolate has boiled over onto our stove and it's one of these stoves i don't really like our stove it's one of those flat top stoves like a glass top flat top stove and there's hot chocolate all over the place and burning into the stove top in a way that it would caramelizing yes carbonizing it would later take a very long time and a lot of lot of lot of elbow grease and abrasive materials to

01:16:44 - 01:17:06 | Speaker 2:

get it clean and also I was like running late I was feeling super hyper I calmed myself down I realized I'm in a good place like whatever and then suddenly I was in a very bad place again I was very late because I had to clean up this mess I had to make more hot chocolate It was just a problem all around And then I'm running late and I'm racing To go to my volunteer I hate this, I just hate this feeling

01:17:06 - 01:17:14 | Speaker 1:

Being late is really not your favorite Which is why we're such a great team You never have to run late When you're riding with Burb

01:17:14 - 01:18:51 | Speaker 2:

I feel like if you're on time If your Uber isn't waiting for you Luke You feel like you're not getting your money's worth You need that driver to wait for two or three minutes Just to remind them the relationship that you're in anyway so all of my point there is just that like i i found myself again in this very stressed sort of crazed mindset for a few hours that i again do not like and i came home and i was like you know what we still have a bunch of boxes to unpack and stuff but the house is now becoming functional right our kitchen is mostly put away all of our dishes and everything i'm like i am going to make myself a comfort feast it wasn't even about eating it it was just about making it so i bought myself i stopped at my old grocery store in the old neighborhood swung by said hello asked if it missed me bought myself a chicken to roast a bunch of potatoes to roast some brussel sprouts to saute and like you know none of this is like really hard stuff but i was like all of this is going to take me a while and i'm just going to go home and i am going to putter my life away when i get home and um god it helped luke i probably spent like three hours prepping this meal and you know cooking it the whole house smelled like my grandparents house because i was roasting these things um by the time it was done i actually was really hungry veves and i had a great meal and then 15 minutes later after eating i'm back to cleaning up everything and that again it was like this doesn't sound like cleaning up is like the fun part of the story but like it was exactly how i always pictured it in our new house i was putting everything back moment it was my coat hook moment and my god did i need it and man the healing power of roasting a chicken on a

01:18:51 - 01:19:18 | Speaker 1:

sunday night man don't sleep on that oh i'm glad that i'm glad that that provided you with the relief that you were needing um and it's weird that you were in seattle roasting a chicken you know it's spring it's april and i was in seattle making a lasagna i mean in portland making a lasagna like we were both like the recipe was like this is the perfect thing for when the weather turns and you know fall is here it's like yeah nobody makes lasagna or roast a chicken this time

01:19:18 - 01:19:46 | Speaker 2:

of year except you and me well you know the reason I did end up on that though was because it was cold and rainy yesterday here's I was talking way too fast and trying to leave some parts of the story out because I feel like I'm giving too much information here but also we just got ourselves a new grill because the grill we were using in our old place belonged to the old place so we just got a grill that Genevieve set up on Saturday but she set it up like in our living room And we're thinking, hey, maybe we could grill tonight.

01:19:47 - 01:19:51 | Speaker 1:

But the weather just got assembled it in your living room. But you're not going to be cooking in the living room.

01:19:51 - 01:19:59 | Speaker 2:

I mean, I suggested it because then we could grill when it's raining. But no, the plan apparently, according to Genevieve, is we're going to take the grill outside and grill out there.

01:20:00 - 01:20:07 | Speaker 1:

But by the time I was done with pop-up, I'd been standing out in the, you know, it was really blustery and a little bit rainy and cold here.

01:20:07 - 01:20:13 | Speaker 2:

Yeah, it was weirdly not warm yesterday for the time of year. And I think that was also what made my brain go in the direction of warm comfort.

01:20:13 - 01:20:32 | Speaker 1:

That's exactly what happened to me. And I was, like, driving home thinking, like, I know Genevieve kind of wants me to grill, but, like, this weather. Like, I don't want my first grill. I've been so excited to have, like, an accessible grill. I know I grilled at my old place, but it was a whole ordeal. I'd have to, like, I have to set up a special table, get the grill from a different part of it.

01:20:32 - 01:20:35 | Speaker 2:

Don't you wish now, Andrew, knowing what you know, that you did burn that roof down?

01:20:36 - 01:20:39 | Speaker 1:

No. Our old landlord is not being.

01:20:39 - 01:20:42 | Speaker 2:

You were trying so hard to not burn the roof down.

01:20:42 - 01:21:05 | Speaker 1:

Yeah. Missed opportunity. Yeah. But anyway, yeah, there is some outstanding stuff with our landlord who is not being a cool guy. Not a cool guy. But anyway, so I've been another coat hook moment for me, if you will, has been when we finally start grilling. because the grill is going to be in one place right outside my front door where I can go out with a pan of meats and grill them and bring them directly in.

01:21:05 - 01:21:06 | Speaker 2:

What if there was a baseball game on the radio, Andrew?

01:21:06 - 01:21:24 | Speaker 1:

A baseball game on the radio. And all of that sounds so great to me and I just didn't want to force it yesterday. I'm like, I don't want my first grilling to be in this windy, blustery, damp weather where it is occasionally raining. That's not what I need tonight. What I need is to close that front door and make the house smell like grandpa's house.

01:21:24 - 01:22:11 | Speaker 2:

it's you and i are so different andrew but in some ways we are very similar because like i just rent this apartment and i have like this actually kind of shitty weber grill that i bought because it could fit on the tiny teeny tiny balcony of my old apartment and it's like it uses those canisters of propane but the kind that are like when you're camping Not like a full on big guy And it just kind of It doesn't have Like what I like about the barbecue experience Is creating a bunch of heat and flame And like the barbecue I used to have Which is still residing at the Burbank Springs Broadcast center You could like get the flames going It's kind of like the experience of it This thing it just kind of like It's warming up a piece of metal more or less

01:22:11 - 01:22:12 | Speaker 1:

Yeah I know what you mean

01:22:12 - 01:22:56 | Speaker 2:

Suffice it to say it's not like the ideal thing But even so i am so looking forward to the first really really warm nice day when the mariners are playing a real like a meaningful baseball game where i can throw my veggie dogs on there and chop up a bunch of onions and like i can picture it in my mind and it's a whole ritual and it's like i don't similarly i don't want to yesterday one of the thoughts i had was i could grill up some hot dogs i was like no no no that's a special occasion involving the mariners and warm weather like and i didn't want i so you and i were sharing a brain yesterday maybe that's why you felt so stressed because you worked into all the bullshit that's always going on internally for me that i'm trying to

01:22:56 - 01:23:27 | Speaker 1:

tamp down with whiskey i know i was sending a lot of emails to my colleagues at cbs with question marks even though they weren't really question marks and the ends of sentences by the way the mariners um season opener is this coming thursday at 1 p.m i was wondering now it's not a home game we're actually playing the twins i know right is there a i mean are we doing anything for tbtl i guess we'll just make sure that tbtl is done in time so that we can watch that game right we're not gonna like try to do tbtl during the game or anything like that maybe go to minnesota

01:23:27 - 01:24:04 | Speaker 2:

maybe go to minnesota do it live from uh the ranham bowling alley and do play-by-play we'll bring an am to transistor radio my power bear and we'll sit down there listening to it in bowling and we'll broadcast the whole thing live um no but let's definitely make sure is that a day game yeah so it's 110 yeah so 110 local or 110 hour time yeah okay yeah well we gotta be we gotta be well done with the show by then um i think we were supposed to open at home but the labor dispute pushed everything back a little bit i think it canceled our home opener which is why we don't

01:24:04 - 01:24:59 | Speaker 1:

play at home i think until the 15th of april yes like next friday or something i um you know what bums me out since we're just doing this i mean we're deep deep into the show um so let's just have this conversation um what bums me out is they're doing something different on opening day this year instead of having every single team play on opening day they're splitting opening day kind of into two days did you know this so half the league will be playing um on the first day than half the league the second day, which means right off the bat, we're going to have, like, a split series. So, in other words, the Mariners are going to start the series with the Twins on Thursday. Then we're not going to have any Mariners games on Friday. And then the Mariners are going to continue the series with the Twins on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. They play one day and then they have a day off? Yeah. What are they, podcasters? I think the league was trying to do that so that everybody could maybe have more access to the game, supposedly, and you wouldn't miss as much. but like that's

01:25:00 - 01:25:11 | Speaker 3:

sucks like you want to see your team start off like get some momentum not like play one game and then sit on your hands on on friday i know and that's like a friday too which would be it's like

01:25:11 - 01:25:26 | Speaker 1:

a perfect baseball slash drinking yeah but anyway here i go once again with the email every week i hope that it's from a female no man it's not from a female well we got to zero of the top stories

01:25:26 - 01:25:39 | Speaker 2:

But we did get to find out that Bob Costas has bad takes on race, and I can really, really nail a veggie lasagna with eggplant as the noodle. I think it was still—and also we know I'm looking at a Norwegian maple.

01:25:40 - 01:26:11 | Speaker 3:

And you use salt to sort of seep out some of the extra moisture, I believe. Yes, very effective, by the way. Here, I have a couple of voicemails I could play. I'm going to play this one from Veronique. I don't remember exactly how this came up But you've been flying around lately for various gigs And you were talking about watching things that are appropriate on the plane You don't want something that is hyper-sexual or hyper-violent Or anything like that Since other people can see your screen Well, this is something that happened to Veronique recently

01:26:11 - 01:27:38 | Speaker 4:

Ahoy, ahoy, chuckleheads It's Veronique I just was listening to today's episode And you were talking about screens on airplanes And it reminded me of my last airplane trip from North Carolina several months ago now, where I was sitting next to my sister and, oh boy, there was a man just sitting sort of, what is that, kitty corny to me, so like up one aisle and just in direct eyesight of every time I turned to my right to talk to my sister, I would catch sight of his screen that was he was an older man and he had fallen asleep on the airplane which is you know magical but his screen was just on this loop for hours of just showing porn um straight up body parts flying around everywhere and it was it was the worst thing ever I mean it was kind of entertaining for the first two hours but after that it stopped kind being funny so the best part was that he right before we landed which was when he woke up somehow his screen just changed i mean he was he was solidly asleep the entire time i was checking and he woke up and it was gone magically before he knew before he noticed so i don't know should

01:27:38 - 01:28:49 | Speaker 3:

i said something okay power out um first of all all i can say is wow yeah a lot to talk about there i i gotta say the description of pornography as body parts just flying everywhere um i had to play that voicemail no matter what because that is my favorite description of porn that i've ever heard in my life um but yeah so many questions because i gotta say you know i wasn't there and I don't want to doubt Veronique's story but like part of me says well you must not have seen him wake up right and he quickly turned it off but I will just trust that that is not the case that this is one of those things where for some like what was causing this was he did he boot this up and start watching it on the plane and then fall asleep or did he fall asleep not watching porn on the plane and then his computer just is what he has for a screensaver or did he accidentally bump a button and also i would always assume that if somebody was watching that in an aisle seat on a plane somebody would say something right flight attendant i would assume that the flight attendant would say excuse me sir sir please turn that off or just close like if the guy's asleep you i could

01:28:49 - 01:29:23 | Speaker 2:

see the flight attendant just like closing the laptop yeah exactly yeah i mean that's amazing on so many levels what I will say is it's unlikely to me that this was content the guy was not interacting with in other parts of his life in other words he must have had a file saved or a website he liked to go to there's no way it just went and you know no judgment I think we're one of the leading sex positive podcasts that rarely talks about sex that's how positive we are we don't want to talk about it

01:29:23 - 01:29:33 | Speaker 3:

we positively do not talk about sex positively think it's weird why are the Spider-Man wrestling but

01:29:33 - 01:29:59 | Speaker 2:

it's definitely there's no scenario in which I think he was watching Pottersville then just like somehow through no prior again experience with this content it switched over to that so obviously he had I would be shocked if he was actively watching it on purpose my guess would be he has like apple you know he has some kind of a video player

01:30:00 - 01:30:44 | Speaker 6:

kind of thing that's probably got movies in it and maybe the thing he was watching ended and it just went to the where the check mark was yeah and the next thing was this um i i think it's again very interesting that nobody on the plane like no one working for the airline noticed it and said uh stop that or just closed the laptop that is also by the way my absolute living nightmare What Veronique just described I don't, whatever I don't have any of those types of films Saved on my computer So I can't think of a universe In which it would happen to me But that would be mortifying At a level that I can't even begin to comprehend

01:30:44 - 01:31:48 | Speaker 4:

I mean the closest comp I have to that On an airplane is snoring Like I often If I took it to that magical moment Of falling asleep I never sleep for more than what it seems like maybe a few minutes and you're constantly like waking up falling asleep waking up kind of nodding off and i always wonder if i think i've even asked i could be wrong about this maybe i've just been tempted to i think i've asked people sitting next to me if i was snoring before because sometimes you wake up and you feel like oh you can feel the snore the residual snores in your throat sort of um and you know sleeping in that position like kind of sitting up your head back like i could see myself snoring like crazy and i really do not want to be the guy snoring on the plane but sometimes you're like well would you rather be asleep passing the time on a potentially uncomfortable flight but snoring or awake the whole time and not bothering people but crammed into a tiny seat and having to be conscious i think that being able to sleep

01:31:48 - 01:32:00 | Speaker 6:

on an airplane is a superpower I would put out like you know there are the big things would you want to be able to fly or be invisible I would like to be able to sleep on airplanes

01:32:00 - 01:32:04 | Speaker 4:

but if you could fly couldn't you avoid airplanes I guess not you're still

01:32:04 - 01:32:06 | Speaker 6:

I would like to be able to sleep while I'm flying

01:32:06 - 01:32:15 | Speaker 4:

that's the real one that's like saying you don't need a car because you can walk so I retract my just think about the kind of like

01:32:15 - 01:33:31 | Speaker 6:

okay I can fly but now I'm still trying to get to new york yeah right exactly it's just like a motorcycle of the sky like i'm going because okay i can fly but i'm i have to go 300 miles an hour to to match the speed of a plane think about just like what that does to your face right you know but um like i i am so envious of people who can sleep on planes because as somebody who travels a lot for my job stuff if i could just like check that off as like a four hour nap or like you know take a red eye a legit red eye and just wake up refreshed the next day i mean that would be so amazing because i love sleeping uh and i'm on airplanes a lot but i can never sleep on airplanes what i need is that have you seen that tim and eric sketch the cinco it's like the cinco party sleeper or something or basically the sketch is this guy and his wife are having a party but the guy is tired and he doesn't want to be at the party so he's wearing this mask that makes it look like he's awake and he's also propped up come on honey wake up no so tired it's our engagement party all of our friends are going

01:33:31 - 01:33:38 | Speaker 1:

to be here i don't want to talk to anybody i'm asleep fine put on your cinco facetime party

01:33:38 - 01:33:45 | Speaker 2:

snoozer then cinco facetime parties have you seen this yet it's the cinco facetime party snoozer

01:33:45 - 01:34:00 | Speaker 3:

anyone noticing my accountant tells me that i might be eligible for a 436 rebate now sure why not as a small business owner that's exactly what you want to hear i understand rebate so this guy

01:34:00 - 01:34:22 | Speaker 5:

is sleeping he's standing up and sleeping at this party and he's got propped up by this like thing though he's got this just very disturbing plastic mask on that makes it look like his eyes are open and there's just this this robot voice that is bob odenkirk it's only i mean the geniusness of

01:34:22 - 01:34:36 | Speaker 6:

the sketch i want that thing on a plane by the way so i can just like sleep like a lean forward but be held up but the geniusness of the sketch to me is how bad the voiceover is and how they have a limited number just if you don't mind i think it's like another minute or something i

01:34:36 - 01:34:48 | Speaker 3:

might be eligible for a 436 rebate now sure why not as a small business owner that's exactly what you want me i understand rebate sign up of course i want thanks for coming the zinco facetime party

01:34:48 - 01:35:40 | Speaker 2:

snoozer features five distinct audio responses using my professional voice and the zinco facetime party snoozer comes with this amazing body brace and earphones that pipe in soothing music so you won't need to hear a single word anyone is saying take part in interesting conversations while you get much-needed rest we'd be on this river and it would wind around like this sure why not we understand pulling the fish I understand sounds good okay thanks for coming Maybe a dozen or so. I understand. Blue River. Okay. Really gorgeous, though. Sure, why not? Thanks for coming. Sure, why not? Oh, my God. What's the name of our favorite weird Twitter guy? Blink.

01:35:40 - 01:35:43 | Speaker 1:

Old friend, 99. Josh Letterman.

01:35:43 - 01:35:59 | Speaker 2:

Oh, no, I think it's another one. It's not Josh Letterman. It's another one that it's like Blink or Link or something. I can't remember. Oh, Wint. Wint. Exactly. Tweeted out this week. The best thing about having friends over is the look on their face when you tell them they're no longer welcome in your home.

01:36:00 - 01:36:12 | Speaker 1:

You know what? You know, our friend Rodin, who has a lovely home with his wife, Maraid, a home that we've all visited many times. He retweeted that and said, this is his favorite thing. And I was like, really?

01:36:12 - 01:36:14 | Speaker 2:

He loves having people over.

01:36:14 - 01:36:22 | Speaker 1:

I know, but he apparently loves telling them to leave even more. I was like, you think you know someone.

01:36:22 - 01:36:54 | Speaker 2:

I just love the idea of sitting down in there and saying, you must leave now. You are no longer welcome in my home. Okay. I understand. Thank you for coming. Okay. I understand. I love the idea of just like telling somebody thank you for coming in the middle of their conversation. Like, Genevieve's all excited to have a big summer party here. And I just kind of want to do that. Like, let's say Ron Upshaw's over here. He's telling me like about the real estate business. And I just say in the middle of his story, thanks for coming.

01:36:57 - 01:37:06 | Speaker 1:

How great would it be if I show up to this party with the Cinco FaceTime snoozer and stand in the corner and be here to everyone out?

01:37:06 - 01:37:09 | Speaker 2:

I mean, just the look of this thing is a crime against humanity.

01:37:09 - 01:37:38 | Speaker 1:

There are so many. like what has really changed my relationship with tim and eric is that i follow like a dr steve brule tiktok account uh-huh and they're always just putting up tim and eric sketches and there are so many sketches that i never saw the first time like i would have thought that i've watched every episode of of their show but they're i mean like that one i hadn't seen until recently like there's so much and there's a lot of steve brule that i didn't see uh-huh yeah they because they

01:37:38 - 01:38:03 | Speaker 2:

had so many different kind of outlets too like some of it was officially like the awesome show great job then they had like uh after dark or after hours or whatever i don't know there's so many in car and then the steve steve brule had his own show for a while there were just a lot of incarnations of that and they cranked out a lot genevieve just last night was watching tom goes to the mayor the precursor for all this stuff did you ever watch that no i don't i think

01:38:03 - 01:38:05 | Speaker 1:

I thought that was a cartoon or something

01:38:05 - 01:38:29 | Speaker 2:

It is, but it's Tim and Eric And it's pre-Awesome Show Great Job In fact, we were kind of obsessed with this Way back in the very early 90s And I remember going to my friend's house in Cleveland, Ohio Me and Genevieve were visiting And our friend Matt said Oh, you like Time Goes to the Mayor? They have a new thing Called Awesome Show Great Job, check it out And then I remember he tried to describe it Can you imagine trying to describe Awesome Show back in 2001

01:38:29 - 01:38:32 | Speaker 1:

Or 2002? I can, because it's a lot Of what we do on this show

01:38:32 - 01:38:57 | Speaker 2:

Yeah, but Tom Goes to the Mayor is a precursor to it where it was sort of animated, but it was them, but it was animated in a very blocky kind of weird way that used photos of Tim and Eric kind of just superimposed on scenes. Very, very, very, very difficult to explain, but a lot of the same humor. And you can see, I don't know, it's interesting to watch the sort of the journey that they've taken and the evolution.

01:38:57 - 01:39:54 | Speaker 1:

Huh. I will check that out because I love them. it's weird to see them post i mean dear god we're like two hours into this yeah it's interesting to see them interesting to see them sort of post tim and eric stuff because so eric warheim is really into food he wrote a cookbook and he's always just posting these like elaborate meals he makes on tiktok completely unironically there's no joke there and then tim has got this like you know decker stuff and on cinema but he also just shows well he made that album that was like non-ironic with wise blood oh right right yeah and he also is in like he's it's interesting to see him in movies where he's like being more or less normal there was this movie called flower that came out in 2018 that i didn't watch it but it like it popped up on like a youtube like i'd watch a trailer for a oh there's this new movie coming out i think it's called everything at the same time all at once.

01:39:54 - 01:39:59 | Speaker 2:

Oh yeah, I've been seeing ads for that all over, but I don't really know much about it, but it seems like it's fuzzy. It looks kind

01:39:59 - 01:40:42 | Speaker 1:

of incredible. I mean, it's, I think it's, is her name Michelle Yeoh, the, you know, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon star? It's her as a person who is living in a multiverse, and something is trying to destroy all of the multiverses, and she's a sort of, I think, largely unassuming woman who is, finds it her responsibility to, like, travel through the multiverse and keep everybody alive. It looks incredible But I was watching that trailer And then for some reason It like Referred me to this trailer For this other movie Called Flower Which looked also Kind of interesting Had Adam Scott in it And looked like Kind of a Early 20s I don't know Comedy of sorts But Tim Heidecker Is just the dad in it

01:40:42 - 01:40:51 | Speaker 2:

Oh yeah And he was in He plays a real norm In Is it Us? What's the Jordan Peele movie? I think Us He plays just kind of A normal character too

01:40:51 - 01:41:16 | Speaker 1:

Yeah it's interesting To just see him In the world just i'm always like okay but do you all know this is also the inventor of the cinco party like he's just being a normal person in these in these films but it's like there's a lot more going on there so thanks for coming i understand all right let's go ahead and call that something

01:41:16 - 01:41:22 | Speaker 2:

my apology i was so inarticulate today i i don't think i feel like i woke up about halfway through

01:41:22 - 01:42:06 | Speaker 1:

the show i also feel like i'm playing the wrong song uh you made me genuinely laugh like four or five times in an in a way that was deep in the core of my person i have done in a while so well i i think it was a good show so it sounds like you were ready for a good time i wasn't but you just forced it upon me oh and i appreciate that i don't think that's how it worked um thank with consent um thank you everyone for listening we are going to be back here tomorrow with a more imaginary radio for you so please join us then for that until then have a great monday take care of yourselves stay safe and thanks for coming also please remember no mountain too tall

01:42:06 - 01:42:08 | Speaker 2:

to all okay

01:42:19 - 01:42:42 | Speaker 1:

Straight up body parts flying around everywhere. And it was my worst thing ever.

01:42:42 - 01:42:43 | Speaker 2:

Power out.
