I hate teeth. I'm so sick of looking into people's mouths. You know, I have this recurring nightmare where instead of all of my teeth falling out, I get more of them. Just like more and more and more. I get teeth fingernails and teeth toenails. My belly button even sprouts a tooth. It's disgusting.

00:00:19 - 00:00:24 | Speaker 4:

Have you thought of getting out of the dental industry? TBTL!

00:00:27 - 00:00:44 | Speaker 5:

What do you want to risk? You have everything going for you. You're on a gravy train with Biscuit Wheel. Más estúpido, más estúpido, más estúpido, más estúpido, más, más. Uno más. Más estúpido, más estúpido, más estúpido, más estúpido, más. I don't understand.

00:00:44 - 00:00:48 | Speaker 3:

Great heavens, what kind of radiola show is this?

00:00:48 - 00:00:51 | Speaker 5:

The story of this situation is, it's extremely personal.

00:00:53 - 00:01:06 | Speaker 2:

All right, hello, good morning and welcome everyone. to a Thursday edition of TBTL, the show that just might be too beautiful to live. My name is Luke Burbank. I'm your host.

00:01:06 - 00:01:16 | Speaker 4:

Well, I get knocked down, but, you know, I get up again, man.

00:01:16 - 00:01:24 | Speaker 2:

Coming to you from the edge of Millennium Park and the shores of Lake Michigan in beautiful Chicago, Illinois.

00:01:24 - 00:01:26 | Speaker 3:

I know you're in Chicago for your big live show tonight.

00:01:26 - 00:01:39 | Speaker 2:

where I'll be doing the Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me program tonight for the first time ever from the Studebaker Theater. Exciting times here in Chicago, where it's very, very nice outside right now.

00:01:39 - 00:01:42 | Speaker 1:

Oh, Ma, Pa, it's just beautiful.

00:01:43 - 00:01:59 | Speaker 2:

I know this because I had to walk across the street from my hotel to an enormous Hilton hotel. So I was outside for about 20 seconds, and it was just gorgeous. I had to walk to that hotel to get some coffee

00:01:59 - 00:02:02 | Speaker 3:

This song goes out to all the coffee lovers of the world

00:02:02 - 00:03:25 | Speaker 2:

A couple of things happened on that journey One, I realized that I have fallen far too in love with the phone payment technology I went from being afraid of that technology to far too reliant on it That's thing number one Thing number two I don't think I know what the CRMC 2022 conference is And I was trying to read up on it on my phone waiting in line at the Hilton Starbucks. I'm very relieved that I don't work in corporate America where I have to know what that conference is and sell people on things and wear my lanyard. I don't think I'm cut out for that world because I don't even understand what the conference that's happening across the street is. So that may come up as well here on... Let the fun begin. ...episode 3702 in a collector's series. I also saw an article in the New York Times today, although I also found out it's a year old. so i don't know we might have discussed this before but it felt like new news to my brain which is that not only are we probably getting enough water as people like just in our normal life the normal amount of consumption of water when one is thirsty is probably sufficient tastes like soot and hot water i'm hooked but actually sometimes when we feel off because we think we're We might actually be overly hydrated. So we'll talk about that. Plus, it's Thursday, a.k.a. Blur's Day.

00:03:25 - 00:03:26 | Speaker 4:

It's my birthday today.

00:03:26 - 00:03:43 | Speaker 2:

Do the Blur's Day messages. All of that would help with this young man, the longest-running cobro of the show, maybe best known for his depictions of the tall ships. He's here to party with the best of them. I cannot believe he just told that joke. He's Andrew Walsh, and he's joining me right now. Good morning, my friend. Good morning.

00:03:43 - 00:04:00 | Speaker 3:

Have you ever had the Ticketmaster app work for you on the first try? Has that ever been an experience in your life? It is name a worse app than the Ticketmaster app. Oh, wait. Arms crossed. But from a famously good company.

00:04:00 - 00:04:23 | Speaker 2:

Yeah, well, that is true. Eddie Vedder was right about them. You put up with the kludginess of the app because they are such a force for good in the world. Exactly. Exactly. They support musicians and artists of all kinds. And then the nice thing, too, is that the long tail on it is you will never stop hearing from them now, Andrew. I assume you're buying Mariner's tickets.

00:04:23 - 00:04:57 | Speaker 3:

Yeah. Well, it's that thing where my buddy got us a couple of tickets. And the thing is, usually when you do it enough, eventually it starts working. But I swear when you haven't used the app in a year, then it just doesn't freaking work. Like my buddy bought a couple of tickets and then he sent me one. And you've got a buddy that's not me? I do. I have. Well, I thought we were going to clear these things. I have three buddies. I got you. I got Paul. And then I have one slot that I just leave open. It's kind of a rotating. It's a rotating position. Well, was it? It's a utility position.

00:04:57 - 00:05:00 | Speaker 2:

Did I get you the tickets? Did Paul get you the tickets? Or did Slot?

00:05:00 - 00:05:35 | Speaker 1:

Slotman. Slotman. Sorry, I'm in a mood. That was like Spoonman, in case you're curious what that was. That was me changing the lyrics of Spoonman to Slotman. Artist the Spoonman. Goodness. I'm all over the place. But yeah, so Pauly, he bought a couple of tickets, and then he sent me one. And I get the email that says, hey, Pauly just sent you some tickets. Just click here. And so you click there, and then it opens the app. And it's like, hey, look at that. You have tickets. I'm like, great. Then you close the app. And they're not there anymore. It's like, you don't have any upcoming events. It's like, hell, I don't. Anyway, I'll figure it out.

00:05:35 - 00:06:42 | Speaker 2:

I went to the baseball game with my mom on Mother's Day. And I had purchased the tickets through Ticketmaster. And it was a situation because we were in a very long line that day to get into the stadium. And we actually left the line once because my mom's purse was too large. Then we got back in the line. And then I had to, even with the long line, I had to let a bunch of people go past us because I couldn't get the QR code to show up. So my advice to you, Andrew, would be while you're getting your Jadena music queued up for your headphones, et cetera, as you're getting your baseball rituals together, screenshot those QR codes or your QR code because it was like trying to diffuse a bomb as the thing is counting down. I'm getting closer and closer to the front of the line, and it's just like not loading, not loading, not loading. And then it needs me to log back in. Of course, I don't know the Ticketmaster password because it's just been saved in there. But now it doesn't like it. So I have to create a new password, which wants to email me. This is all happening as we're shuffling towards the entrance at T-Mobile Park. Yep.

00:06:42 - 00:07:38 | Speaker 1:

I've been there before. I do have a screenshot. At some point, like via the email or something, I at one point saw the QR code for this thing. So I did screencap. But I guess I'm all set. I forgot that I had done that. So I guess I'm all set. It still just drives me nuts that the system doesn't work. the way like literally right now i'm in the app right ticket master and it says you know like you go to the little sidebar and it says here's your information just generally speaking and it says you have two new notifications with a little red dot there so then i open it up because i'm probably like oh that's probably one notification me hitting the notification and then the notification hitting the floor um no it's probably like hey two notifications regarding these tickets one that paulie sent them and one that i downloaded it but then i click on it it says you don't have any notifications yet i'm like i'm here because you told me that i have two notifications like it doesn't even listen to itself but uh this is not interesting you had some things on the show sheet that actually seemed way more interesting to me including your uh your travels to there the windy

00:07:38 - 00:08:49 | Speaker 2:

city well or did you want to swerve on that no no i'm i'm i'm happy to process this with you i'm also having that weird thing where i'm having like a borderline embolism i took a big sip of my coffee but there was apparently a bubble of air that was below the coffee if that makes any sense yes i know you're talking about i swallowed like that weird thing where you swallow an air but i don't know how it is that we've made it this far as a species and invented rocket ships and yet we're still susceptible to just swallowing a bubble of air at the wrong time i know you're right almost dies you yes that's what you just heard you just heard my entire life flashing before my eyes as i tried to process this bubble of air that as i was taking my sip of coffee was also getting trapped and then once that train starts leaving the station there's in the words of katie perry there's no going back like i'm just like i gotta ride this out i have to let this bubble of air now travel down into my esophagus slash stomach slash wherever things go when you swallow them and it was so painful so anyway sorry about that no i apologize you know

00:08:49 - 00:09:53 | Speaker 1:

I just I I thought I was just being obnoxious and just hogging the microphone and going on and on and on about not being able to get an app to work, which suddenly like my little tiny part, whatever tiny part of my brain is still a producer brain said, hey, this is even even for this show, Andrew, this is probably enough of this. So I just shut up abruptly. But I could also talk about lady fingers for a while. If you need more time, I got plenty of material firecrackers or the or the snack, the snack, something that I don't think I've heard of before. But Genevieve's, do you know that Genevieve's part of a food cooking club where they go through all of the countries, starting with the first one in the alphabet? And now they're in the B's, and I think that they have a big event this weekend where they're getting together to cook, and they're making Brazilian food. And Genevieve is making some Brazilian dessert, and she needs ladyfingers. But she apparently drove all over town yesterday. She was not able to find ladyfingers, and I want to be the good boyfriend today and see if I can swoop in like a hero with some ladyfingers. Find yourself a grandma. Walk out on the street.

00:09:53 - 00:10:18 | Speaker 2:

Look for someone who looks grand matronly, and she will know where you are. you can get the supply just walk up and say hey do you have do you got a line on some stuff and hey do you know where i can get some you know where i can get some stuff and she'll just say yeah she'll point you in a direction of like an old like defunct mini mart that just has one thing of lady fingers way in the back by the overly sugary tropical drink from some other country

00:10:18 - 00:10:26 | Speaker 1:

and a um right set pineapple missing one of the shovels exactly there'll be a lake there'll be 20

00:10:26 - 00:12:28 | Speaker 2:

years of dust on all of these products in the back corner of this gas station mini mart and that's my friend where you find the lady fingers okay that's a good beat thank you so my trip out here well gosh i i i hope that i am not too unrelatable on this show sometimes because of course i am in certain ways because of the amount of travel that i do for work stuff i have become fairly rarefied and fairly bougie with my travel meaning particularly during the pandemic when not very many people were flying I would pretty regularly get I would be fortunate enough to get upgraded to the front of the airplane also known as first class and I guess that's been happening kind of a lot lately because I flew coach I flew deep coach yesterday from Seattle I flew from Portland to Seattle and Seattle here to Chicago and it was rough on me Andrew like I I have gotten so soft in the last year because of the privilege of often getting to fly in first class. And it was a rude awakening because, boy, they are not giving us much room back there in, as I call it, deep coach. So I wasn't even in the part of coach where it's like a little extra leg room, you know, the kind when you're setting up your seat that's a different color when you're looking at the seat map. I was in very I was on a window So that was at least something But the guy who came and sat next to me And I also realized something If I'm in deep coach And I only have Which is also That could both describe how I flew to Chicago And if you're somebody who has the entire DVD collection Of the TV show coach And you're on season like 7 I was thinking that too, yes When something goes on with Dauber An episode the whole family should watch That's also known as Deep Coach. Or the lesser Van Dyke brother. What's his name? Jerry Van Dyke, who we learned, Andrew. What did we learn when we were in Denver?

00:12:29 - 00:12:32 | Speaker 1:

Oh, I don't remember. Did we go to Denver?

00:12:32 - 00:12:34 | Speaker 2:

Turned down the role of Gilligan.

00:12:35 - 00:13:01 | Speaker 1:

Oh, right, right, right. That's Jerry Van Dyke? Jerry Van Dyke, Dick Van Dyke's brother. Gotcha. Yes, yes, yes. I was confusing him for a second with who played George's dad. Van Dyke Parks, the poet who collaborated with Brian Wilson and made the Smile album. No, I get confused with the fellow who played George's dad on Seinfeld. But now I'm just leading us into a frustrating conversation. Sorry.

00:13:01 - 00:13:11 | Speaker 2:

You mean Jerry's dad, right? Wait, wait. Was that – were those – no, no. Jerry's parents were more normal and George's parents were Jerry Stiller, Ben Stiller's parents.

00:13:11 - 00:13:22 | Speaker 1:

Stiller's, yes, yes. I was getting the comedy royalty lineage confused there for a second. But, yes, of course, it's Jerry Van Dyke, as you were saying, deep coach.

00:13:22 - 00:14:54 | Speaker 2:

So I was in deep coach, and I'm sitting there, and it's all kind of occurring to me. Also, it's a longer flight than I thought it was. It's four hours and 41 minutes, which my brain has always been like flying across the U.S. is five hours. That's what I think of it as taking. Maybe that's just been wrong the whole time. But Chicago, we're in what is called the Midwest It still has West in the name How is it four hours and 41? How is it almost five hours for me to get from Seattle to Chicago? So this is all kind of sinking in As I'm sitting in my seat and then Oh, the other thing I was going to say is When I'm in deep coach, there's no reason to board early If you're in first class, you know, you have a big comfy seat They bring you water, sometimes they might even bring you a mimosa It's just a, you want to get into that seat as soon as possible Because it's the height of luxury Deep coach It's like all you are doing And I checked my bag Because I had kind of a lot of stuff I'm going to be doing a few different things on this trip Including an assassination So I needed room for All of my various things, my scopes And stuff like that Well you have a violin case, right? With a bunch of little gun parts in it Anyway, all I had Was my little computer bag So it was not an overhead bag situation Because sometimes you want to get on the plane early because you're going to try to get that thing in the overhead while there's still room. But that wasn't a factor. And I realized, oh, I'm just going to sit on this plane for now an extra 45 minutes while everyone else is boarding. Because I get to board first because of my little status. But, like, to what end?

00:14:54 - 00:15:00 | Speaker 1:

Unless you're worried about losing space for that overhead compartment, which is a...

00:15:00 - 00:15:22 | Speaker 2:

a real that's a reality for me like it's like three people board the plane they're like we're not taking any more luggage on any more wheelie bags they don't say wheelie bags i think i say wheelie bags but so that's the only reason why you might want to sort of jockey to get on the plane earlier other than that no you're just trapped you're just extending your hell it was

00:15:22 - 00:16:24 | Speaker 1:

so dumb of me but again that's the muscle memory of being one of you know usually again it's like If I'm lucky enough to be flying in first class, it's like, oh, and now we're welcoming our gold 75K in first class, and I get to stroll. But I kind of like to act almost confused, like, oh, is this my turn? Like, oh, well, I guess I'll go. I try to be real aw shucks about it, which I think the whole room is kind of reading. Not unlike the guy who was still in his surgical scrubs. This guy was sending a lot of nonverbal communication about his life. He was in surgical scrubs. He had a pair of Hoka running shoes tied together and slung over his shoulder, and he was holding like a tuxedo bag from the men's warehouse. So he was clearly on his way to a wedding. He was somebody who was probably a doctor of some kind, and he liked to run. And I was like, okay, I wonder if this guy is not spoken for. He is an incredibly eligible bachelor based on these signifiers.

00:16:24 - 00:16:42 | Speaker 2:

now you saw him not me but it's i i see something like that i assume that he's a stripper who starts who you know pretends to be a doctor of some sort uh-huh and then also he has those shoes because he's a shoe delivery man i don't know man i'm a student of the world too that's

00:16:42 - 00:16:53 | Speaker 1:

what i would have taken away but maybe you're right it's one of those kind of brain tests where you look at it, and I see a dolphin, and you see an old lady. Yeah, exactly.

00:16:54 - 00:16:59 | Speaker 2:

Look, as we famously say on this show, Luke, you don't need your gestalt to work here, but it helps.

00:17:00 - 00:17:07 | Speaker 1:

Yes, exactly. So I thought what happened on stage in Denver stays on stage in Denver, Andrew. I thought that was the agreement that we had.

00:17:08 - 00:17:22 | Speaker 2:

I just wanted to see if I could sneak that in and make an actual TVTL canon. For folks who don't know what I'm talking about, don't worry about it. I tried to make a joke on stage at the trivia night in Denver, and I still sometimes wake up in the middle of the night screaming. It was so bad.

00:17:24 - 00:18:28 | Speaker 1:

Well, anyway, so what I what I learned was if I'm in deep coach, there's and I don't have a carry on that's that's stressing me out. There's no reason to get on the plane because early because that's what I did. And I was just sitting there for probably almost an hour. And two minutes after I get in my little seat, a guy comes and sits next to me. he goes well i guess i'm your seat mate and he was um he was a you know he was definitely not a small person so like there was just kind of a physical space issue for me and him because i'm also not a small person i'm like six feet whatever it is i weigh we're both just kind of big adult men so like and i try to give i try to give the middle person the arm rests because i just feel like that's the nice thing to do you know if if you're stuck with the middle seat at least you should be able to put your arms somewhere comfortable but he wasn't just on the armrest he was kind of like elbows over the armrest to where i was now having to do that kind of like is that like the cover of like a prince album where he's doing that weird thing where his legs are intertwined and his arms are intertwined i know the move you're talking

00:18:28 - 00:18:32 | Speaker 2:

about i can't picture i don't know i don't know if prince has actually done it but i can i can

00:18:32 - 00:19:54 | Speaker 1:

picture prince doing it there i think it's a yoga position actually where you're just kind of like everything is wrapped i was basically doing that most of the flight now here's the thing this guy was actually very polite he kept trying to talk to me i had my airpods in i was listening to the mariners um game but uh he was a perfectly pleasant fellow except for the fact that he was taking up a lot of my room and he immediately starts reading something called the 1776 report And I saw that and I was like No good comes from that What is that what even is that And I was thinking Because you know what else he had a mask on Andrew He was masked which was great And he was very diligent about it But it was a mask that was an American flag So I was like huh this is mixed messages for me He's being very I mean I had my mask on but I'm taking it down from time to time It's like I'm probably not being Quite as diligent as I should be He's fully masked never took it down So I'm giving him points on that front yeah but it's an american flag mask and he's reading something all i saw was the kind of that 13 stars in a circle on the cover of a book and i was like nope no good comes from that anymore which is really messed up that if i see someone trying to study the history of this country's governmental structure i know it's just a bad sign yeah i'm trying to figure out what this so

00:19:54 - 00:19:59 | Speaker 2:

he's actually reading this this report that came out of this this commission right it was some Trumpy thing.

00:20:00 - 00:20:17 | Speaker 1:

did you look into this i didn't i didn't really know when you were saying what this book was but now that i'm looking it up i'm like oh yes this all rings a bell i think i buried some of this deep down with some of my other uh trump related trauma i did not i didn't know what it was and

00:20:17 - 00:21:11 | Speaker 2:

then i was thinking well maybe he's reading up on the constitution so he can point out that like what happened on january 6th was in fact an insurrection like i was really trying to give him the benefit of the doubt first i just thought the first thing was i thought it was just the declaration of independence um or whatever it was the constitution at first i thought he was just trying to read up on things to um to like just refute the maga people who are saying crazy stuff that's not really historical or or based on the facts of this country i was really trying to create a universe in which this guy wasn't just on his way out for like an insurrection basically and then i googled it low-key on my phone before we took off and then it was yeah some bullshit thing that trump rammed through like the day before he left office to just basically be like go america is was the takeaway that i got from my quick cursory internet search wasn't it kind of a

00:21:11 - 00:21:46 | Speaker 1:

response and i'm looking at this now too but i do also sort of remember this this was like kind of a response to like the 1619 project i think is that right 1619 yeah the new york times project And the idea of teaching the true story of slavery in schools. And then a bunch of conservatives were like, what? But that would make America sound bad. It would almost make it sound like we had a bunch of people who went overseas and captured a bunch of human beings and kept them here and enslaved them. It would almost sound like that's what we did. But we didn't do that. Let's release the 1776 report. And that's basically what this was.

00:21:47 - 00:22:40 | Speaker 2:

And this is apparently the one person who's reading that report. it's the guy on the flight next to me and then this was the weird part again he was a perfectly pleasant fellow who who was like they came by you know asking like do you want to buy food and i said well what do you have and then all they had was like well we have the meat box i was like no that's okay thanks oh you're in deep coach oh my what's in the box um they're like we have um we have a pig snout box um heavy on the hooves if you'd like that no thanks and then he goes well you can have my pretzels i don't want anything you want my pretzels and i was like no i'm good thanks man so he was like being a very nice person yeah but it was so at one point started to get dark and i could tell that he was straining to read his his 1776 report and i was tempted to reach up and turn his light on for him but then i didn't want to make it easier for him to read

00:22:40 - 00:22:45 | Speaker 1:

Right, and also, I guess, does he not know about the light? Does he not fly often?

00:22:45 - 00:24:59 | Speaker 2:

I didn't get the sense that this guy was, you know, somebody who was flying a ton. Considering he was middle seat, which that's not a criticism. It's just, if you have any status at all, if you're flying any way on the regular, you're trying to stay out of that middle seat really hardcore. So him being in the middle seat made me think maybe this was a fairly unique experience for him. and if he i'll tell you what if he were reading dreams of my father i would have turned i just reached up and just turn the light on for him i really went on this i would have voted for him a third time if i could i mean seriously like i was like i was like turn the light on for the guy he's straining i was like no good this should be work for him this should be hard this should be the thing that burns out that burns out his rods and cones because this is bullshit what he's trying to do right now even though he's a nice fellow and this isn't this really kind of life in this moment for us which is like a person can be generally pleasant but if if they're wearing a punisher t-shirt uh you know that's got like the something that signifies to me that they're probably in my opinion on the wrong side of some politics i just cannot i just have a really really hard time seeing them as a normal human being with hopes and dreams i only see them as a person who is trying to or who is either intentionally or unintentionally threatening the very existence of this country which is a problem Andrew for me like I've heard interviews with folks who have covered countries where there are civil wars and places where there's really extreme sort of perpetuated violence and this was actually on Chris Hayes's podcast I forget the name of the this is a reporter who studies extremism in America but who previously had been stationed in other countries where there were civil wars and things and this reporter said when things change is when people start seeing the people they don't agree with not just as someone they don't agree with but someone who is an extent threat to their life and that's when things start to get bad when it's not just like hey we don't agree on taxation but it's like this person is actively trying to get me hurt and that's what i felt like when i saw this guy reading the the the report and that's a bad thing that's bad that that's what my brain does but that's what it It does.

00:25:00 - 00:26:02 | Speaker 1:

Yeah. And I mean, I think understandably so to a degree, because, you know, this is something that I struggle with. I have people in my life, of course, who I think are very good people, but who have been fed a just a strict diet of nothing but Fox News for the past 10 years. And it changes you. It just does. And like the fact that this man is actually reading the published report, like he's not even read. He's not like watching Fox News interpret this report. Like, this is a man who is being very polite to you and is like interested in knowing what's in this report. Right. And like, which I've got to give him credit for. Yeah. I mean, he's going to the source material. You know what I mean? Like, my guess is this is not a man because here's the deal. There are also a lot of characters in our culture and we know them well and we see them a lot, especially when you drive from Seattle to Denver through some pretty rural communities who are basically living trolls. Right. They have every kind of signifier on the back of their truck that they want to own the libs, and if they knew what a lib I was, they would crush me under their boot.

00:26:02 - 00:26:13 | Speaker 2:

And, you know, like, what do they think about Brandon, though? Are they in favor of Brandon just staying stationary? No, I don't. Can we call today's show Stay Stationary, Brandon? Yes, we can.

00:26:14 - 00:28:32 | Speaker 1:

I'll write that down. Please do. Stay put, Brandon. Don't move, Brandon. um anyway uh yeah so i mean there is that thing and there are people who are just like straight up troll like you know just even like i said like in hawaii when i was so my snowflakiness was so triggered by the you know here comes a swear but by somebody driving this big truck that says fucked a vax like i think about that all the time like somebody cares so much about about the idea of not taking medicine that they've got a bumper sticker you know what i mean and like anyway i just when you see that trolliness or the let's go brand and stuff and the people who are just trying to trigger people like you and me they're out there and they're trolls but then you do have other people who are probably probably and again we're making a lot of assumptions about this guy i am assuming that this guy is a stripper whose whole deal is he dresses up like a conservative he's working with the surgeon in first class he takes off his american mask first and that's when things really start to get hot um no i mean we're making a lot of assumptions about this guy but assuming that our assumptions are right about where he is and why he's reading this thing like he's probably a man who looks at his life and says I am trying to be a good person in this world and I'm trying to educate myself and this is and it does concern me that if people are teaching our kids to hate America or whatever it is and I'm not making that argument here I think you know me well enough to know that I'm not making it but like to remember that and this is something that you know just when I think about it in that way and I'm not talking about the trolls out there the people who are trying to own us on twitter what have you but when you think about other folks like that i just the only thing i can ever really try to do is be like well then i think of myself in the same way but i obviously i look at the world in a very different way so i will just try to lead by example and just like you know what i mean you even thinking like maybe i should turn on the light for this guy like just being like to for everybody to show everybody that like no we're not we're not trying to own you don't try to own us we're all just there are some good people out there who do disagree about things even though you know this report is a very day and this commission and that whole administration was a very dangerous thing i don't want to diminish that but i'm just you know not everybody who buys into it is doing it to own the libs

00:28:32 - 00:29:47 | Speaker 2:

yes this exactly this guy seemed like a person who is in their own flawed way trying their best in the world and i have to give them credit for actually like having this boring ass looking little pamphlet and reading it because i'm sure 99.9 and now i am going to make a kind of generalization i'm sure 99.9 of the people who think that critical race theory is is being taught by every teacher in every classroom in america um have not actually taken the time to read this thing that was put out as the counter to that or you know what i mean like you have to give somebody i think at least a little bit of credit for going to the source material on something because i often don't do that myself i'm just i'm lazy and i like to read the headlines and i kind of make up my opinion based on what the new york times and msnbc is telling me is the case that's how i tend to operate so i got to at least give this this is a person who is trying their best to inform themselves and to get through the world in such a way that they are making this country in their opinion better or preserving something about this country they think is great and it i disagree with it but the guy he is he is not getting up in the morning thinking how do i make this country worse

00:29:47 - 00:30:00 | Speaker 1:

that's not what he's doing every morning right yeah exactly um so you i i don't know if now is the time to bring this up or to take a break or whatever but i am very intrigued by that tape that you played at the beginning of the show that sounded

00:30:00 - 00:30:03 | Speaker 2:

Like the dude to me from the Big Lebowski Somebody doing the dude I don't know

00:30:03 - 00:30:29 | Speaker 3:

Do you want to talk about that now? Do you want to take a break? Yeah, I'll just play it really I played most of it It's a guy named Josh Rubin Who I just saw on TikTok I think he's a filmmaker And he does a couple of different really funny impressions This just made me laugh for some reason It's basically if Jeff Bridges was singing Chumbawamba The I get knocked down but I get up again song This is Jeff Bridges doing Chumbawamba

00:30:29 - 00:30:50 | Speaker 1:

Well, uh, I get, uh, knocked down, uh, but, uh, you know, uh, I, I get up again, man. I get up again. You ain't never going to knock me down. That's the impression. There it is. That's it.

00:30:50 - 00:30:56 | Speaker 3:

That's it. And that's all. I don't know why that just makes me laugh so much for some reason.

00:30:56 - 00:31:16 | Speaker 1:

Well, I get knocked down, but, you know, I get up again, man. I get up again. You ain't never going to knock me down. At the end, the lip smack.

00:31:16 - 00:31:20 | Speaker 2:

From the white Russian, because he's always smacking his lips from the white Russians.

00:31:21 - 00:31:38 | Speaker 3:

Totally. So that's Josh Rubin, the filmmaker. I think he made a movie called Werewolf Within I don't know what that movie's about That's just what I saw in his TikTok bio But if you want to go find out what he's doing That's who did that very funny Jeff Bridges quoting Chumbo Wumba tape Now it's canon So we could even make that show intro now

00:31:38 - 00:31:55 | Speaker 2:

Yeah I was going to say you should send that to me I'll give it some space But like a year from now when we've forgotten about that That'll put a smile on our face On a rainy Monday in September Whoa I don't know why Do I say September funny What happened to my face As I was saying September

00:31:55 - 00:32:23 | Speaker 3:

I think that would be so much more fun If that's how that word was pronounced September Like it's almost like a Yeah like a tambour Like you know like could be a name for somebody Like September I love that Because you know September can be a tough month We're going back to school The weather is about to change It's kind of summer's over It's not fun to always to sort of contemplate September But September That's like let's keep the party rolling

00:32:23 - 00:33:52 | Speaker 2:

It's September y'all Luke I did we don't we don't have time to get into this and I actually even made a point I didn't want to like bore you with my the details of my mundane life but we were talking on the show yesterday about being being okay with stillness maybe and trying to maybe turn down some of the the dopamine in our lives or the things that trigger dopamine and just whatever but I did so much sitting last night just like sitting and like listening to the game like there was a point where i could have gone and turned down the mariners game but there's kind of some there and again i kind of don't want to get too much into this we can talk about it more later but i was i'm still on my project of like um of de-seasoning and then de-rusting my skillet and then uh and then uh seasoning it again and i did i'm basically there now it's all like kind of done i stripped it all down and i seasoned it last night i was up until like two in the morning doing that um but i a lot of listeners had suggested hey instead of just scrubbing and scrubbing and scrubbing that pan with um you know easy off oven cleaner just try putting it in the oven and then put the oven on the self-cleaning cycle and you know that's what the oven will heat itself up to like 800 900 degrees and just like yeah burn everything on the inside of the oven they said put your pan in there and then run it and i did that and it just burned the remainder gunk off i'm still glad i got most of it off in the sink but like it just burned all the remainder stuff off but it made the house super smoky as that process always does right it always does like

00:33:52 - 00:34:29 | Speaker 3:

not super smoky i've never i don't think i've ever actually i don't think i've ever activated the self-clean um button or whatever you want to call it on the you have to do a thing where you also like you move some kind of a lever that like locks that thing closed like i feel like that's the closest i'll ever come to like the nuclear football you know what i mean where it's like you got two sets of keys and you'll be standing eight feet apart i feel like starting the self-clean thing and clicking that lever over that's like this cannot it's like the ark of the covenant yeah raiders you cannot open this while it's self-cleaning or you will burn up like that

00:34:29 - 00:36:29 | Speaker 2:

nazi dude there is no machine that is more concerned about your well-being than an oven and self-clean mode like this one i have now it doesn't have that lever it just has some sort of internal function that the second you press self-clean it just locks the door immediately i even tested it i'm like that's funny i don't have a lever in my old place you had to slide that lever over and then the second you hit again and self-clean wouldn't work until you hit that right moved it and then once you did move it over and hit self-clean you could not unlock it the machine is i'm sorry david you cannot open the self-cleaning oven Like it is so worried on your behalf, which rightfully so that shit gets hot. All of that is to say I had all the windows open. You want to self clean your oven on a very specific day. It can't be too hot in the middle of summer because then everything will just it'll just be miserable inside your house. But you also need to have all the windows open as well. So it can't be like a frigid winter day. So anyway, I had all the windows open. I had the front door open, which has a screen. But we have this back door that does not have a screen. And it's right by the oven. And so I wanted that thing open and I just pretended it was like 1951 or something. I got one of the I got I got one of the kitchenette chairs and I set it out on this little tiny back porch we have. This is not a back porch for hanging out. This is like an extension of our laundry room, sort of. It's just a little side entryway to our house that is covered and just has little like kind of accidental shelves because they're just like the boards that are holding up this little area. and I put the chair out there and I just opened that door and I wanted to be there so the cat wouldn't get out I didn't want to just open the door and walk away and the Mariners game was on I could go in the other room and watch this on TV but screw it I'll just sit here and stare it's not even a good view Luke it's just like a little view of my side yard and I just sat there with beers so maybe that doesn't count as dopamine resetting but it was just so great and the rest of the night As I'm seasoning this pan and doing all these things, I'm just like going outside and sitting and staring. I thought of you. I hope you have some staring time ahead of you.

00:36:31 - 00:38:57 | Speaker 1:

I am. Yes, this weekend I will on Sunday I'm going to be out at the place that I'm working on. And I have now the lawn is nice and mowed, as we learned yesterday in the middle of my soliloquy about how much I'm unplugging from everything. I got a call from the guys who are mowing the lawn. That lawn is all mowed. I'm going to sit there. I'm going to sit in my one chair and I'm going to do some good staring this weekend. I'm very looking forward to it. All right. Let's take a quick break. And then when we come back, we do have these top stories and these blurs days to get to. So stay with us here on TBTL. Hello and welcome to Top Story. Before we get to the water thing, and by that I mean this is probably the part where we're not going to get to the water thing. I went across the street to get some coffee before we started recording today And what's kind of interesting because I'm staying in this It's a nice hotel I mean, they're, you know, Wait Wait is putting us up at this pretty nice place in Chicago And I went downstairs just thinking they'll just have a coffee shop Or they'll even just have coffee out for folks You know, I mean, that's what you can expect at a Even a, you know, a kind of a more, I don't know Consumer kind of right off the highway type of Motel 5 situation But the person was like, nope you got to go across the street to the hilton where they have a mini starbucks and i was like okay so i go over there and there's something going on everyone has lanyards on the place is just teaming with people at something called crmc 2022 and here's what it's on the website what they say it is crmc 2022 is the premier retail marketing event of the year network with marketers from over 180 retail brands specializing in crm cx analytics e-commerce and then if you if you click on the link the it's called discovering new frontiers and then the companies are like albertsons arby's asics shoes this is just the a's obviously best buy brinks like exxon mobile what do these companies have in common i cannot figure out what the what the connective thing is that these why are mcdonald's is there the north face is there um right aid uh sleep number bed these are all just tgi fridays what do these companies have in common i am so confused as to what the hell

00:38:57 - 00:39:02 | Speaker 2:

this conference is it must just be marketing and branding like you said you said it's retail

00:39:02 - 00:39:11 | Speaker 1:

marketing so but i i guess it's like who are they marketing to it just seems so so i don't know

00:39:11 - 00:39:28 | Speaker 2:

we know that the rm is retail marketing right because you said that and you said the conference is crmc i have not looked this up yet by the way but i just wanted to see so you said it's retail marketing so you gave me that if it's crmc could we say that that this is critical race marketing

00:39:28 - 00:39:37 | Speaker 1:

convention that's why that guy was reading he was heading to chicago he was getting ready to go into

00:39:37 - 00:40:00 | Speaker 2:

this critical race marketing conference i'm gonna say the final c is conference so something retail marketing conference and then could the first c be consumer do you think consumer yeah that doesn't make a lot of sense but also it sounds like something luke can you is this too um you sent me something privately. I assumed we would talk about it on the show, but we haven't.

00:40:00 - 00:40:12 | Speaker 1:

is it okay to read part of the email that you got from one of your other jobs about your upcoming training because like even for me i was like those are not words uh yes you can absolutely

00:40:12 - 00:40:50 | Speaker 2:

read that that's from cbs because i'm trying to sign up for some online training i'm just trying to watch the video for how i do the new expense system at cbs um and i have to email some company some part of the company called t and e which sounds way more fun that's like tired emotional just to be our code for drinking but that's like the people that they're somewhere within the paramount company and they do something related to the expenses like they're the people that i usually turn to if i've completely hit a wall so i was asking how do i get i was trying to get access to literally watching a video about how i do concur and do you happen to have yeah i

00:40:50 - 00:41:28 | Speaker 1:

have it right here this is you want to read it amazing i mean this first sentence is just amazing And I want to break it down later, but I'll just read it all the way through now. The first thing it says is for Okta assignment. Now, Okta is all caps. O. K. T. A. And for some reason, assignment is capitalized. So for Okta assignment associated with Concur, please create an incident with Pit Stop and assign it to the identity engineering team at VCBS. Now, VCBS must be Viacom CBS, Columbia Broadcasting System, right?

00:41:28 - 00:41:29 | Speaker 2:

Yes, I believe so

00:41:29 - 00:42:01 | Speaker 1:

Okta, O-K-T-A For Okta assignment associated with Concur Please create an incident This idea of creating incidents, by the way I hate that engineering speak so much Like, amongst engineers, that's fine But the fact that they are It's like, that's probably like create a ticket, right? Whenever you call somebody up at a big company You're like, hey, can you help me with this? It's like, well, did you create a ticket? Did you file a ticket? And it's like, no, I didn't file a ticket I'm just asking if you can help me with my control button on my keyboard. But I assume that in this case an incident is like a ticket. Are you creating an incident?

00:42:03 - 00:42:06 | Speaker 2:

Yes, that is – I haven't done it, but I guess that's what that is.

00:42:06 - 00:42:10 | Speaker 1:

Yeah, so for Okta assignment, do you have any idea what OKTA assignment is?

00:42:11 - 00:42:44 | Speaker 2:

Yes, that's the system – it's like that is the thing that I log into initially. So I go to this one website and it's I guess that thing is called Okta and then that gets me into a whole bunch of different things related to Paramount and CBS and Viacom. It's basically where I get where I used to get to Chrome River, which was the old expense travel expense software. Now it's Concur, but that's what Okta is. But I don't I don't I couldn't tell you really what it is except for it's a thing I sometimes have to go to.

00:42:44 - 00:42:57 | Speaker 1:

And you have to make this incident in something called Pit Stop, which is also capitalized. That's news to me. There's a thing called Pit Stop. Yeah, that's where they, I think they take your tires off, spin them around, and then zip them back on there, I think.

00:42:57 - 00:42:58 | Speaker 2:

What am I, Dale Earnhardt Jr.?

00:42:58 - 00:43:08 | Speaker 1:

For the Identity Engineering Team, the IET at VCBS. Anyway, that is just like, that is the most Targus, Targus email I've ever seen.

00:43:09 - 00:44:59 | Speaker 2:

And the funny part is those people at T&E are actually very nice. Yeah, I'm sure the people are. I actually get help from them a lot, and sometimes if I'm on the phone, they're very likable. It's not even like that person is trying to be intentionally annoying. It's just that's the system. But it's like there's just so many layers, and so many things just pile up, and then at some point you're sending an email like that. That just is – it's ludicrous on its face. But it's like it's just built up slowly but surely. We have this system. We've got to make sure that we have this other system so that the first system doesn't get hacked. And then there's this. And then over time, you build this pyramid of nonsense that was all laid out in that email. By the way, speaking of pyramids of nonsense, here's a which wouldn't be a bad band name or show time pyramids of nonsense. So here's a attendee testimonial from CRMC 2022. Truly enjoyed hearing from retail industry leaders as well as select vendors supporting all things CRM data and loyalty program best practices. Now, I'm starting to think that, like you said, Andrew, I think that maybe what this conference is about is getting your customers to be more loyal to your brand or your company. That's what this loyalty stuff is. So it's probably about those little things that we get signed up for and those little barcode thing that you put on your keychain for Shell so that you can scan it to get faster, whatever. like all that loyalty stuff i mean i guess you're right i guess probably the the the thing that's happening here is helping companies and brands create more loyalty with their customers and i mean this is a there's a science to this and it's effective i'm loyal to a bunch of brands actually you know what the guy that uh was driving me from the airport

00:45:00 - 00:46:31 | Speaker 1:

to the hotel last night a guy named jamie it's actually a branch manager of a bank here in chicago and i was very curious to kind of hear like what goes into that like what is it actually what's your day-to-day and he goes well i got this i've got this scorecard at the end of every month that i really have to like hit it out of the park on for my bosses so that i get you know my bonuses and basically keep my job and one of them is revenue so they're always trying to get Folks to go into a different Loan product or get a loan product Which makes a lot of sense if you've been at the bank and you have more Than two dollars in your checking account they're usually Saying have you considered This particular way to make This money work more for you and better for you But then he was also Saying that he has to have a lot of Stickies Something called stickies on his score sheet I was like what are stickies like that's all direct deposit Direct withdrawal anything Where you've Punched those numbers into whatever the gas company or your mortgage companies like that makes it so people never leave the bank they have a lot of stickies and i stickies um which i was like oh that totally makes sense like i will maintain a relationship with an organization for 10 years past when i should if i've already punched in all the numbers and it's just happening automatically and for me to move would be like take those numbers out punch them into a different system i you could do a lot to me as a customer and I'll just roll with it because I don't want to punch those numbers into somebody else's system.

00:46:31 - 00:47:49 | Speaker 2:

And I just want to, I got to get this out because I couldn't have been more wrong. I was so, you had said retail marketing. I'm like, well, then we know what the RM is. But no, the RM is not retail marketing. It is customer relationship management, which you just described, but I don't know if we ever actually said that's what CRM is. And it seems to be a very common term. And I'll bet you a lot of people in our audience work on CRM related things. So this was probably the other C is probably conference right so customer relationship management conference i'm on the website now but like conferences that are so deep into this stuff like of course they wouldn't explain what crm is on the website because if you're on the website you already know you know what i mean like there are certain things that just seem so like especially trying to break into a part of an industry that you don't know anything about like what is the there's the public radio conference i used to have a like a bag that i carried around forever and it was like a a bag for a laptop but I didn't have a laptop. I was just like, I was like Lionel Hutz carrying his bag around. I had like a sandwich in there. Yeah, I did an apple with one bite out of it. Yeah. And a skull. I believe. But it was the PR DMC, right? I think they still even have the public radio development marketing PRM.

00:47:50 - 00:50:42 | Speaker 1:

So more specific than the PR PD. Yeah. PR PD. Obviously, we've been to that one. i have to go to that in new orleans this year and i was it's really funny because when i walked into this conference which i also want to say that i thought the artwork was really cool like the all of the poster boards the logos the like the imaging of this thing it was actually very not soul crushing like it wasn't the like medical like the international society of like you know of medical technologists specializing in rectal care or something like i don't know what the most like just intense industry inside kind of like not to me seeming fun conference could be this wasn't that actually like they have cool they had cool logos and branding everyone seemed happy to be there like it didn't seem like a soul crushing event it seemed like event where i would not prosper because i wouldn't know what was going on but the first thought i had was do i have to go to prpd which is the first time in my life i've had that thought i usually like those things i think it's kind of fun i you know i'll often be part of some sort of presentation i think it's probably good for me professionally someone else is paying for it it's new orleans which is a fun town like i think i think this might be an age thing but i was like i wonder if i can get out of going to new orleans that was the first thought i had when i walked through this conference maybe it's because john barth isn't going to be there for the first time i love john barth i love john barth he's a Kyle he's a colleague of ours Emeritus John Barth can come to any conference that he wants to In my opinion but like it's funny Because like I said I've never That's not the way that my brain historically Has worked around I mean granted I do A lot of travel now for work and I don't look forward to all Of it but I think Something just even for this wait wait Thing Andrew like and again I'm this is Kind of an honor that they're letting me be on this panel It's the first time we've ever done the show at this new theater Etc like I'm honored to get to do it There's a lot Of people that would be very excited to get to be a part Of this very successful show wait wait so I Don't want to sound Ungrateful but I did have this thought I guess what I was thinking Yesterday as I was getting on my second Plane and having the Guy next to me reading his Questionable documents and then this morning as i was thinking about this conference i have to go to in august for the very first time in my life it occurred to me why people don't travel more like why people why there are people and i know them because we try to get them on liveware and they're like no i'm not doing that like i'm not flying across the country to come be on your show or people at cbs that i work with like part of why i get a lot of stories because i'm like yeah i'll go there i'll go do that and there's a lot of people that are like no i'm not going there i'm not going to fly Across the country for that or fly to some Place where you you can't Actually fly there you fly to another place and then You rent a car and you drive for six hours like There are people who have boundaries around this stuff And I don't think I've ever been that person And I felt like in the last two days I'm starting to understand why those people have Those kinds of boundaries

00:50:42 - 00:50:51 | Speaker 2:

You're going to become a super possessor version Of that you're just going to Shut down everything I don't think that's true I don't think that you'll ever like kind of shut down

00:50:51 - 00:51:56 | Speaker 1:

Well no I'm too afraid to that's the problem is that Like I want to shut down some of it But I fear that if I if I say no thanks to a to an assignment or no thanks to an appearance at PRPD or no thanks to any of it, then they'll just no one will ever ask me again. Like, I feel like the value that I add to everything is that like I'm Mikey, I'll eat anything. Yeah, I don't I don't think I try to tell myself that's not the value that I'm adding. But that's what I on a fundamental level. That's what I feel like my value is, is I'll show up and I'll do it and I won't complain. And I try to be low maintenance, you know, relatively so. But there are people who behave really differently They're like, no, that sounds dreadful to make that trip Or, no, that's too much, I can't do that I'm not going to do that And I just have never done that I've never been that person But I swear to God, in the last two days I've been like, oh, this is why people say Like, it would be unthinkable for me to say no to wait, wait, don't tell me Because every time I go on there They say TBTL And they say Livewire And then people hear it And then we get a few more listeners, hopefully, on TBTL And maybe Livewire will sell some more tickets for next Thursday night By the way, Revolution Hall

00:51:56 - 00:52:00 | Speaker 2:

I was waiting for the by the way Chuck Plosterman will be there

00:52:00 - 00:53:39 | Speaker 1:

It's going to be great But so it would be like I'm sure there are people that are on the panel I was thinking about this the other day So there's a guy named Joel Kim Booster Who's an actor And who was on the panel with me a few times And now he's in this new Netflix show I think it's called Fire Island And it is, people are flipping out for it It is like the – I don't know if it's a movie or a series, but it is like the thing that is hot right now. And I saw him on Twitter, Joel, saying, thank you so much for all the love. I don't really know how to process this, but I just want to say thanks, et cetera. And I thought to myself, I bet you he never does Wait Wait again because now he's got this other thing that's massively successful and he doesn't probably need to come do Wait Wait. And I thought, I will never get to that level. I will never get to the level where I don't need to come and do Wait Wait. Don't tell me to promote the other things that I'm working on. So I don't know where any of this is going other than to say I should have brought my bank card to the Starbucks and the Hilton, Andrew, because I was in my jogging gear because I'm going to go for a run after this. And I just grabbed my phone because most of the time you can just pay with your phone now. And apparently that's worked on me to the point where I just assumed the phone will be sufficient. I didn't have my wallet with me. I walked through this whole conference. I get to this Starbucks thing and I go up to pay. i order the coffee he brings the coffee and then the thing that does the card reading is not working like that i'm sorry when i say card reading i mean yeah that uses my phone as a card is not working the guy was very nice he just gave me the coffee i'm gonna go give him some money later but i can't believe i found myself in a situation where i had too much faith in that considering i used to have

00:53:39 - 00:54:33 | Speaker 2:

not enough faith in it well that's another that's a um to go back to the best part of the show which was me complaining about the Ticketmaster app is, you know, I am getting pushed more and more to use like the Android wallet, something that I've never used and not just use it as a way for paying for things with my phone, which is a big part of it, but also like, hey, do you want my phone was like, hey, do you want to save these tickets in your Android wallet? And I was like, no, I don't have that set up or whatever. But like, that's probably one of the reasons I maybe I don't need the app for the Ticketmaster. Like, I'm just I'm so reluctant to set up, which would be my version of Apple Pay for you. And I don't know exactly why, other than I'm reluctant to maybe change generally. And also, like, I'm still somebody who carries around cash because I just like paying for things with cash. Like, I don't think I'm moving in the in the right direction with the rest of society. But, yeah, I guess I should set that thing up at some point. I'm going to have to, huh?

00:54:34 - 00:54:43 | Speaker 1:

Well, you know what Ticketmaster needs? They need to come to this conference and learn about critical race customer management. They need to get some stickies on you, Andrew Stickies!

00:54:43 - 00:55:29 | Speaker 2:

I have a question for you This is not something that we discussed This is not on the show sheet And I also don't even know if you're going to know what I'm talking about I was surprised recently We had a couple of incidents where Me and either Genevieve or me and John Were referring to what I thought were very, very I don't know.

00:55:00 - 00:55:29 | Speaker 3:

I mean, to even call them popular means I thought there were memes, by the way, that were in the culture that you were not familiar with. So I don't know if you're going to know what I'm talking about here, but there's something new that's been popping up in my timeline quite a bit. I'm going to say starting on Monday of this week, and it tends to be tweeted out by the people who tweet really weird stuff. You know how you and I kind of talk about how we like the weird side of Twitter. I know what you're going to say. What is it? I know what you're going to say. Can I guess? Can you give me the background and can you tell me how I can make one?

00:55:29 - 00:55:39 | Speaker 2:

know the background okay is wait is it the these are my politics no this is the i think it's like

00:55:39 - 00:56:20 | Speaker 3:

a fake captcha is am i saying captcha right it's the thing you are you know when you sometimes it'll be like uh it'll show you like nine pictures and it'll say pick out the one with the trains in it or something like that and enter a website i think that's what this is although i'm not sure It's like somebody will type something in and then hit run, and then this thing will – here, I'm going to send you a link to this right now, but it's like nine images. It looks like there's some sort of generator for this stuff online, but I don't even know the words to describe what I'm looking for if I were to want to create one of these things myself. But it's like nine pictures in a row. I have not heard about this thing. You're looking at it now?

00:56:21 - 00:57:00 | Speaker 2:

No, no, I'm waiting for it to come through. The thing I thought you were talking about is also this very, very like meta joke thing that I did not get on early. So now I don't understand it, but it'll be like somebody will say like this describes my politics. And then it'll be like two trolley cars going and they're like slightly different colors or it'll just be a picture, a seemingly very random picture of a couple of things or of a person. And it'll say this describes this basically describes my politics. And I understand that it's a reference to something That I missed the initial reference of And so it's like It's totally lost on me I texted it too you can take a look at your phone

00:57:00 - 00:57:45 | Speaker 3:

In the meantime I'll tell everybody A funny little cartoon meme That I saw on the internet Recently I'm just hearing the words I'm saying But it was a picture It was like kind of a crudely drawn picture Of like what you would Draw to explain the trolley problem you know there's somebody with a switch and a trolley is coming and are you gonna uh just like run over the one person who's on the tracks or the family that's on the tracks or whatever but somebody replaced um it very jankily you might describe this as a dank meme luke they replaced the people on the tracks with trolleys the little candies they said the trolley problem i just keep on thinking about that and it delights me so have you now seen this tweet that i sent you

00:57:45 - 00:58:01 | Speaker 2:

Yes I have no idea what this is It's so it's gone so Beyond yeah my Like what my brain's Ability to comprehend digital life We have like my brain Stopped being able to comprehend something That's 300 miles south of

00:58:01 - 00:59:04 | Speaker 3:

This yeah because what we're looking at Now is we're looking at whatever the original Part of this meme was We don't know and now it's just like All these little subcultures have taken it over And so it's all it's just a platform for super super inside jokes within subcultures but i literally as listeners will attest having listened to me babble i don't even know the words to describe what i'm seeing so i can't google it i i'm looking at it for the internet and i'm looking at it and i also don't have words for it it's nine images arranged in a square and they're all slightly different and it looks like it's some sort of a a general like a meme generator like if i could find the right words I could find one and make my own because you fill out a field and then you hit the button that says run and it looks like the computer will sort of create this for you using maybe images that it finds on its own online. I don't know. If anybody can explain this to me, please do otherwise. He's got like everything he ever produced on the internet. Oh, shut up now. He can knock us out with his memes. I'm sorry. That was a terrible place to take the show.

00:59:05 - 00:59:29 | Speaker 1:

There's a right way to rock and a wrong way to roll. You can just listen to your soul Just remember that life is number one You can be having so much fun Just remember that life is much fun You can be number one

00:59:35 - 00:59:55 | Speaker 3:

Who wants a blurs? We want a blurs. You know who wants a blur is Morgaine. We met Morgaine on our Zoom's Zerades night. We're playing charades over Zoom. By the way, have we registered that yet? Is the money rolling in on the Zerades concept or not? It is. And in fact, I wanted to talk to you about that.

00:59:55 - 00:59:59 | Speaker 2:

We pretty much don't need to work anymore. We're both independently wealthy now.

01:00:00 - 01:00:18 | Speaker 1:

from the Zerades fortune. That's awesome. Just send me my part of the fortune through the Ticketmaster app, if you will. Morgaine says, it would make my day if you would wish me a happy birthday. I had so much fun playing Zoom charades. It's Zerades, Morgaine. And I'm so happy. Actually, Morgaine doesn't have the rights

01:00:18 - 01:00:28 | Speaker 2:

to call for it. Oh, you're right. Thank you for respecting. Do we have to, Andrew, do we need to play that video again made by the companies that want to stop diluting their trademarks?

01:00:28 - 01:00:44 | Speaker 1:

It's called Hook and Loop Charades. Morgaine says, I had so much fun playing Zoom charades, and I'm so happy I was able to keep supporting you through the latest TV telethon. Thanks, Morgaine. As Jay would say, go with the flow and always paint your bald spot.

01:00:46 - 01:01:37 | Speaker 2:

I'm doing that's my that's how I live my life, Morgaine. That's exactly what I'm going to do later. I'm going to paint my bald spot and go do wait, wait, don't tell me and hope I'm in a flow state. Megan says, happy Blur's Day to Annie in Seattle. Annie and I have been friends since high school And we only recently discovered we're both long time tens Cheers to you Annie For being the ultimate TBTL trivia whiz May we still be enjoying Rockbox karaoke Husky football And Red Robin Boca Burgers When we were in our 90s Why am I so hungry for a Red Robin I've got another I mean the Boca Burgers Great there at Red Robin But I've got a whole hack that I do Megan if you want to know the trick Get the tavern burger But if you don't eat meat So get them to make it like it's the tavern burger But then have them throw in the veggie patty That's my life hack it buddy

01:01:37 - 01:01:55 | Speaker 1:

I don't think we talked about it on the show This is meat related This wouldn't be for you Where was the place John Oh Shake Shack I've always heard of Shake Shacks And I think it's one of those fast food places That people kind of fetishize a bit The one in Seattle

01:01:55 - 01:01:56 | Speaker 2:

Had a line forever

01:01:56 - 01:02:06 | Speaker 1:

maybe he still does. Oh, really? Oh, so there is one here. Okay. Yeah, but I'd never had it. You know, I'd never really knew much about it, but it was a good burger. I guess that's the end of the story. Nice and salty. Oh, good.

01:02:06 - 01:02:44 | Speaker 2:

So here's the thing. This is my take on veggie burgers, and I also do this at Burgerville in Portland. A lot of times if you're getting the non-meat burger, they think that you don't like burgers. They're like, you've got the regular cheeseburger or the hamburger with all the kind of cool stuff on it, and then you've got the garden burger that's got, like, sprouts. and a whole wheat bun, and it's like, no, we just don't eat meat, but we would like all the other trappings, please. So I very frequently order the, like, whatever burger, and then I'm like, but can you just throw the veggie patty on instead? Because I don't want avocado and sprouts on my burger, personally. I believe whatever burger is a totally different chain, Luke.

01:02:45 - 01:03:25 | Speaker 1:

Yes, I'm sorry. Whatever burger. Matthew says, happy Blur's Day to Zachary Asher, a.k.a. Zap, one of, if not the newest fives. Sounds like somebody was just blursed. As my nephew and TBTL grandchild, I'm excited for many years of hijinks and skyjinks. Woo. Hot dogs and hot dog stories. Your daddy, Ben the firefighter from Pittsburgh, is in for an exciting new journey. Congratulations, Ben and fam. Much love from Uncle Matt, and I cannot wait to meet you. Oh, zap. We got a little zap in the TBTL family now. If they have another kid, they've got to name him Roger.

01:03:26 - 01:04:01 | Speaker 2:

Yeah, exactly. Paul's in Annapolis, Maryland. And an Apple 10? Paul wonders. I'm wishing myself a very happy 60th Blurs. As a present to myself, I'm taking a vacation to Portland, Oregon, June 12th through 21st. So if any 10s want to arrange a meetup, they should hit me up on the U-Face thing. Let's go day drinking. That sounds fun, Paul. I like the energy, Paul. I hope the weather's nice when you get here. Now you know, Paul, what to order at Burgerville, too, because that's a very Portland thing, so you're hooked up.

01:04:02 - 01:04:43 | Speaker 1:

This comes in from our pal Summer, who just celebrated her Blur's Day, but she says, I had more of a blues day this year. Turns out moving across the country to the middle of nowhere for a new job right before COVID equals too many lonely feels. That kind of hit me all at once. I'm sorry, Summer. But Summer says, thank God for you and the tens, or I'd really be down and out. Well, I hope you're feeling better, Summer. And thanks to the community for being there for Summer. Also, Summer says, happy Blur's Day to Cheryl from Corvallis. And happy 6th Blur's Day to Riley, the offspring of our favorite Hollywood power broker and TBTL friendo, Wynn. So Wynn's kid just turned 6.

01:04:44 - 01:06:36 | Speaker 2:

Whoa, I did not realize that. Hey, look it. Speaking of Cheryl and Corvallis, rip-de-lip-dip-dip-dip. It's my 46th Blur's Day today, Cheryl says, but I'd also like to wish a belated Blur's Day to summer. Wow, this is. We're really getting full coverage on these two. I'll scratch your blurs if you scratch mine. I love it. You're such a warm and kind person, Summer. It makes me very glad to share this week of blurs with you. That's from Cheryl and Corvallis going out to summer. That's really sweet. I told you that that's like the reservoir dogs of blurs days. What a sweet reference. Everybody's aiming a blurs day at each other. Does that spark joy? You heard me almost refer back to that, but then think better of it. I think I've said that on the show before. It's just how I... Hey, listen, it's a nice, innocent reference. I got shot by a Blur's name. Yeah, when you say, the Reservoir Dogs of Blur's, I'm like, oh, Tim Roth in the backseat of the car? One of the more traumatic scenes I've ever seen in a film. I mean, I will never get that scene out of my head. Oh, I mean, that movie has so many just, like, ultra-violent. Yeah, it's a dark film. So Marissa in Maryland says, happy 38th Blur's Day to myself, celebrating today, which would be the 9th. In my 38th year, I started working towards my graduate degree, my first graduate degree, I should say. You're never too old to do anything except snag a slot in one of those 30 under 30 lists. Love to all the 10. Dude, I didn't even make it under 40 under 40. I guess your chances do get better the older you get, right? Because I'm under 50. Come on, can somebody put me under 50 under 50? So if they get to 70 under 70. I would say, though, my life advice for anybody, whether it's Marissa or anyone else, as I've always said on the show, is just...

01:06:36 - 01:06:52 | Speaker 1:

Well, I get knocked down, but, you know, I get up again, man. I get up again. You're never going to knock me down.

01:06:54 - 01:08:23 | Speaker 2:

So there you go, a little life there. Life advice to wrap up the blurs on a thurs. Perfect. All right. We're going to figure out. We got to spend the rest of the day figuring out what this meme is. You'll probably blow off. Wait, wait. Don't tell me. Wait, wait. We can't figure it out. I'm sure that Hari Kondabalu and Nagin Farsan can handle it. Oh, Hari's on it. They don't need me there. Wait, is he? Yes. He's a panelist. I don't know if I knew he was a panelist. If he was panelizing that show. Is this his debut? Has he been doing this? No, no, no. He's been. We did the show in Seattle together. He's a very frequent. Great Panelists Now I know I'm super psyched To see him and everybody else Out there Maybe I'll see a ten or two As well at the Stuart Baker Theater I have Don't move Brandon Or stay put Brandon As possible show titles I also really like Pyramid of nonsense Because I sort of feel like It really describes Today's show Or at least Let's not I like that too And let's not Let's not give any oxygen Even Even if we're trying to Roast that sentiment Yeah Of the people that are Trying to own the libs Let's not even give it Any more oxygen than we've accidentally given it today. Do me a favor. You won't do this, but do me a favor. Say hi to Hari for me, and then let me know tomorrow what his reaction is, because I don't think he remembers me. So just say, Andrew says hello, and just see what he does. Does that put you in an awkward place? No, but I'm wondering if I should try to record it. Is that a wiretap violation? You're not supposed to record people without their permission, but it'd be funny if my phone is just rolling in my pocket, and I'd say, Andrew says hi. Hari is such a polite, friendly fellow.

01:08:23 - 01:08:26 | Speaker 1:

I'm sure he'll go like, oh, how is Andrew? Yeah, that's true.

01:08:26 - 01:08:51 | Speaker 2:

Whether he knows who you are or not. Yeah, that's true. But I'll do that, and I will do that, and then I will report back tomorrow, okay? Okay, sounds good. Do make sure that it's not a two-party consent state, though, because I don't want to get you in trouble, okay? Thank you. Yes. All right, well, thanks for listening, everybody. We will be back here tomorrow with more imaginary radio for you, so do please join us for that. Until then, have a great Thursday. Take care of yourselves. Stay safe. And please remember, no mountain too tall. And good luck to all.

01:08:53 - 01:09:21 | Speaker 1:

you might say that each and every one of us is a crew member here on spaceship earth when would we say that anytime dinner literally anytime power out
