I like it when I go traveling, I like to have a cell phone, because it's really important to have a cell phone, especially when you're going to pretend like you're a business person. And, uh, I'm a business person, too. Um, I'm a business person. I have pens. Uh, I have a checkbook, okay? And, uh, that's what I like to do. I like to go, like, when they have a conference in the hotel, I like to go down and mingle with my cell phone, pretend like I'm, I'm there for the, yeah, uh-huh, yeah. Can you believe it? They let me out on bail. Yeah. Yeah, manslaughter, can you believe it? No, I did it. No, I did it. Anyways. Uh-huh, uh-huh. Yeah, I need 900 billion. No jillion.

TBTL.

00:00:47 - 00:00:58 | Speaker 5:

Take a hot dog, stuff it with some jack cheese, fold it in a pizza. You got cheesy blasters. And then all the kids say, thanks, Meat Cat. And then Meat Cat flies away on his skateboard.

00:00:58 - 00:01:07 | Speaker 1:

You know, what happened next was, you know, they'd open their mouth, they'd speak, they'd get laughed at, they'd get called Polacks, and they didn't want to go through that. You know, they wanted to get rid of that stigma.

00:01:08 - 00:01:13 | Speaker 2:

There is something about the soul of a snake. I'm going to make you work for your dollar. Say something with that great radio voice.

00:01:15 - 00:01:27 | Speaker 3:

All right. Hello, good morning, and welcome, everyone, to a Wednesday edition of TBTL, the show that just might be too beautiful to live. Microwave. My name is Luke Burbank. I am your host.

00:01:27 - 00:01:29 | Speaker 2:

I'm a professional. Look it up in the book.

00:01:30 - 00:02:18 | Speaker 3:

Coming to you from the Hollywood Broadcast Center right here in Portland, Oregon, where yesterday I looked at the weather application and it said that it was raining, but it was actually pretty nice outside. Today, no, legit raining. It is. Didn't know you like to get wet, though. It's getting wet, though, out there. But, you know, it's July 6th, so why wouldn't it be raining? everything seems to be going really great with the climate um i know that's not directly related but i would like a wouldn't mind a sunny wednesday here in july that seems like a reasonable ask as it were also would be reasonable if i didn't have to hide in this studio from my insane cat inspired by kittens which is what i'm doing i'm telling you bubbles is on one

00:02:18 - 00:02:22 | Speaker 4:

this morning when i eat hot cheetos i get crazy including

00:02:22 - 00:03:06 | Speaker 3:

getting trapped in the refrigerator refrigerator refrigerator i opened the refrigerator to get something did not realize she had jumped in closed it and was walking around for like probably 30 to 40 seconds before I heard her meows coming from inside. The calls were coming from inside the refrigerator where she had knocked over all of the beers and near beers in there. She's safe. She's fine, everybody. Don't worry. But I'm just telling you, it's been a real morning here. Thank God we made it to episode 3720, 3,720 in a collector series.

00:03:06 - 00:03:07 | Speaker 1:

Let the fun begin.

00:03:08 - 00:04:06 | Speaker 3:

I'm going to just focus on that, including food news. We tried to get to this yesterday. We ran out of time. We are going to talk about food in the news today. I can't believe I ate that whole thing. Including the Subway Corporation. Aren't they owned by something called like Doctors Associates or some weird name? Subway is revamping their menu yet again. There's a waste of time to do that. Trying to sell more sub sandwiches because they've been having trouble over the last few years. We'll take a look at that. also the company that took over all the mcdonald's in russia so apparently according to the internet selling some very subpar burgers mold on the buns insect legs in the patties i don't know what that means but it sounds disgusting uh so we'll take a look at that as well plus emails and v-mails and this guy the longest running cobro of the show may be best known for his depictions of the tall ships he is andrew here's my sweet stash let's freaking party well she's always

00:04:06 - 00:04:27 | Speaker 2:

ready for the freaking party good morning my friend good morning luckily i don't have any um little jokes or asides or stories to share with you at the top of the show no japes but good lord my man your story about bubbles in the fridge made my my palms sweat that's a that's a close call

00:04:27 - 00:04:59 | Speaker 3:

that's scary as shit i know thank god i know listeners calm calm yourselves everybody calm down she's fine she is safe but yeah it was just one of those things where i was making my coffee i was just kind of like you know doing my thing in the kitchen i opened the door to grab a bubble water ironically yeah right and then i i just shut it without looking and then i'm just continuing to do my thing and i'm just hearing this muted meow and i realize the cat is in the actual refrigerator.

00:05:00 - 00:05:11 | Speaker 2:

I know, that was a little bit scary. Yeah, we, um... Don't call CPS on me, listeners, please. I'm doing my best here as a single cat. Cat Protective Services? I'm a single parent, I'm just doing my best.

00:05:12 - 00:07:49 | Speaker 1:

Yeah, no, I'm glad that worked out. We had a scare with bananas a few days ago. I couldn't find her anywhere. Genevieve was gone. I think she was out on a walk somewhere. And she never came back. But more importantly, the cat. No, Genevieve was on a walk somewhere. She was, like, just gone for the afternoon. And it's one of those things where it's like, you know, your cat is not in your, at least in my case, my cat is not in my sight, in my eyesight 24-7, right? Like, cats go nap in various places, whatever. But you have an internal clock where at some point you're looking around. You suddenly stop and you look around the house and you're like, ain't seen that cat in a while. And I haven't had like a, Bananas does not seem like she would, she's not a cat who like hangs out by doors trying to run outside or anything. She doesn't have a big thirst for that. Although, if you were to accidentally leave a window open or a door open, eventually a cat will start sniffing the fresh air and just wander away, even though I know Bananas has no desire to live on the outside. She ain't built for it. But suddenly I'm kind of standing around the kitchen just like, okay, haven't seen that cat in a minute. So then I start going around the house, start looking at all the usual hidey holes. Can't find her anywhere. Then you open a can of cat food. and if she doesn't come running you're in code well if not red you're in code orange because cat is food motivated then i make a phone call that i don't have to make i call veves i'm like um when's the last time you saw the cat she's like not in a while i'm on my way home now i'm like i don't know man i've checked all the usual places i can't figure this out and then i finally remember oh sometimes the cat if genevieve's closet door in the bedroom is left open bananas will go in there and fall asleep and then just stay trapped in there but for some reason not cry like i've had cats that are trapped behind doors before it's kind of a thing i'm into and usually they'll cry or whine at some point let let you know that hey it puts the catnip in the basket i'm a sick sick man um but anyway yeah i opened the door and bananas is just like hey man of been trapped in there a long time it's kind of gives me this look and then goes trotting out to where i had uh opened up the cat food but it was like man those moments no matter how many times in your life you kind of go through those those moments where you're like oh shit my day slash night slash week potentially month or life is going to change here like where is the cat because you know i've had you know bananas and theo both ran away at the same time and theo stayed out in the wild for five days i'd given up on that guy yeah i remember that now at the time of course i

00:07:49 - 00:09:56 | Speaker 2:

was i felt really bad for you and veeves um but i think now i would be even more kind of like trauma adjacent or traumatized on your behalf because of my severe and some would say unhealthy bond with this cat like if bubbles was in the wind i would i would really have a hard time like not i don't know obsessing over it i don't know how you were able to just kind of come on and do the show and stuff like that um now here's the thing though i want to play you a little bit of audio that i recorded this morning andrew okay uh this is that scat spray which you may have recommended i get this yes this is yeah here i actually have the audio take a listen now what this what you're hearing andrew is the cat intentionally activating this and just letting it blast her in the face she's eating it like a heavyweight eating punches oh your cat's like the person like exactly that would explain a lot actually like like you see those people online who get tased but they just pull the like whatever the electrode out and they're just like unfazed I got this can of compressed air to try to keep the cat from jumping up on to the um the the counter in the bathroom and the way she would do that was by jumping on the toilet and then jumping up onto the counter she has now figured out that the compressed air does not hurt her she kind of likes it so she just does whatever she wants do you know who andrew is afraid of the compressed air you me yeah at three in the morning when i forget that i set the stupid thing up and i'm coming into pee because i'm an old man and then it sprays me it scares the living shit out of me as i wrote on the show sheet in soviet portland cat trains you yeah now bubbles is going to set those around the house places she doesn't want you to go i am i am a hundred percent responding to the behavioral modification of the spray can she is unfazed she's just leaning into it just

00:09:56 - 00:10:10 | Speaker 1:

like give me more give me she really was that all you got you said Can you make it rain harder? She's like Prince playing the Super Bowl halftime show. Can you make it spray harder? She has learned that it doesn't hurt her, and she's now into it as a game.

00:10:10 - 00:10:21 | Speaker 2:

Yeah, no, you said that she's like the person who gets tased and then just pulls out the taser wires. No, that's not true. She's the person who gets tased and then says, give me more and jumps onto an electrified fence.

00:10:22 - 00:10:56 | Speaker 1:

It makes her more powerful. She's like a negative energy monster. The spray only emboldens her. That's really amazing. Yeah. It's amazing and frustrating because, like, I know I sound like a broken record, but she's just, she can get onto every surface now in the house, and she likes to, and it's just, you know, that's my life now. And, again, it's fine. I don't want it to sound like, I know I did lock her in the refrigerator this morning, and she apparently gets high off of, you know, keyboard cleaner now. But it's going great around here.

00:10:56 - 00:11:01 | Speaker 2:

Well, the good news is you can save some money on scat cans Because those things are not cheap, man

00:11:01 - 00:12:00 | Speaker 1:

No, they really are not at all The only thing that seems to, like, actually kind of I don't even want to say calm her down But just, like, basically distract her Because if she and I are in the same room I pretty much have to be running the laser pointer for her Getting her to go on the treadmill Waving this feather wand thing Like, we have a whole series of different things that we do but the one thing that will kind of distract her is if I run the Roomba she likes to just kind of crouch and watch the Roomba and then move her position as the Roomba moves and it's kind of funny because before I had the cat I had sort of um anthropomorphized this Roomba I named it Randy and I would talk about how sometimes I would talk to the Roomba like it was a sentient being and now it's like they're siblings and people keep saying you got to get another cat that will that will keep you know bubbles busy but it turns out randy and bubbles really are siblings they really do they entertain each other which is kind of sweet i think you gotta get another roomba

00:12:00 - 00:12:09 | Speaker 2:

expand your family so so bubbles is still like wary of the room bob but but treats it as a bit

00:12:09 - 00:12:42 | Speaker 1:

of a game yeah like she won't ride on it or um but she's also not like hiding in terror like she's not in a closet somewhere she's like three inches away just watching it kind of perplexed and what's what's cool about is of course it's constantly moving around the apartment in fact i would be running it right now except for it's kind of annoying from a sound perspective on the show but it really is now the way if i just need some time if i just need a break from this cat i will run the roomba now just to distract her because it does keep her interest that's

00:12:42 - 00:12:51 | Speaker 2:

interesting and she was she was a feared of it right at first um she was uh yes but but never

00:12:51 - 00:13:58 | Speaker 1:

like terrified she was just she was more perplexed she seems to be completely fearless as a as an animal in fact to the degree that i can't let her go on the balcony because she's eyeing this for a while i thought well she's a cat she has survival instincts we can hang out on the balcony together And the way that this balcony is set up in my apartment, it has, there's a railing, but it's like these slats, these metal slats that are wide enough that she could fit through them. And I remember one night just thinking, she's going to have to, I want to be out on this balcony and she's going to have to learn, you know, that she can't jump off of it. And she'll, there'll be something instinctive that will stop her from doing that. And so I thought she's going to, I'm just going to let her learn that. And then about three seconds later, I was like, no, this is too stressful for me. I got to put her back inside because she gets like 40 percent of the way through these metal slats. And then she starts eyeing this windowsill that's not even a sill. It's like it's slanted downwards. It's metal like it's a disaster. And I'm like, I can't enjoy myself out there if I'm constantly afraid that she's going to jump.

00:13:59 - 00:15:00 | Speaker 2:

Yeah. Yeah. I was always paranoid about the open windows at our old apartment, which was like, you know, either two or three stories up, I guess. Stories. Is that the right word when you're talking about a house? Floors, maybe I should say. Is it always a story? But anyway, and like Genevieve's like, listen, they're cats. They know how they know their limits. Like, you know, first of all, I'm scared of I'm scared of heights and I'm just scared of everything. So, like, you know, bananas sniffing around and sticking her head out the window, you know, in the part without a screen and then eventually sticking her whole body out. and I'd be like come on bananas but I don't want to spook her so I don't like you know go to grab at her or anything but like I would get visibly anxious about that and I think Veeves was more along the lines of their cats like they know their limitations here but I also have seen my cat the other day we got to get off cat talk man I but I um I had just mopped the floor um and I think only part of the floor was still wet or something and bananas thought it was food time or something She heard me open something that sounded like food, and she came around.

00:15:00 - 00:15:17 | Speaker 1:

running into the kitchen and hit the wet spot and went sliding in a way i had never seen before i forgot about this this is just like last week and uh she went sliding i'm just like see yeah everybody's everybody's clumsy sometimes stay away from open windows well okay becca's cat holly

00:15:17 - 00:16:13 | Speaker 2:

when holly was a kitten because becca lives on the 15th floor of one of these high-rise apartment buildings um she you know had the door open and just figured you know because she does have a railing that's like it's solid like it's solid glass so i guess she just sort of thought this you know this cat is a kitten it's not going to be able to do anything she came home and the cat was on her neighbor's balcony right you mentioned that yeah yeah yeah one or two floors down and just meowing and had the cat her theory is that the cat was trying to chase a bird maybe but had the cat had the bird landed on the other side of the railing no more cat yes you know 150 feet down or something so that's also kind of living in my head like uh to the degree that i would think these cats have some innate ability to stay alive that i mean that was just pure luck that the cat jumped off the side of the balcony where there was another balcony that that she could land on

00:16:13 - 00:19:13 | Speaker 1:

you know my biggest nightmare is um is i always say the the i always say the cat ran away or something which is the wrong way of putting that because cats are just maybe attracted to outside and they get lost or whatever like if bananas were to go missing in the out of doors i guarantee you the right verb is her the wrong verb is ran away because she does not she's she's not fleeing anything here right it just means she got confused and got outside but whatever term you want to use for for a cat who is in in the wild and lost the worst time to lose a cat would be while you're moving and it's also the easiest time to lose a cat because doors are open while you're moving furniture or whatever and you try to be careful and today we've done that a million times with our cats and luckily um and luckily they never got away for good but do you remember i think it must have been a tbtl listener somehow i got just i mean barely involved around the margins of somebody who lost their cat right during a move and it was around my neighborhood they were moving out of the roosevelt neighborhood to somewhere else like to like ballard or someplace significant i'm wondering this might be a tbtl listener they probably were a tbtl listener until i didn't help them find their cat but like i remember them emailing just in distress being like we've lost our cat the cat is somewhere in this neighborhood and we're moving to a completely different neighborhood like how do you deal with that you know when bananas or i guess bananas came back quickly but when theo was gone for five days and we had put signs up all around the neighborhood and you're just like oh every time i'd walk home and i'd see those signs of my own missing cat it would like destroy me oh he ended up you know he ended up coming back that son of a gun but um but yeah i mean it's so you know it's just such a terrible feeling but can you imagine moving what if it was a what if you were moving to another state you know and your cat and you have to you know you're taking a job or whatever but it's just like there's some irony in the fact that the easiest time for a cat to get outside and get lost is also the time that you could be potentially moving someplace where you because cats will eventually you know if they're able to survive out there they have a pretty good sense of of of where home is you know what i mean and they can come back but if you've moved out of that home oh and i just remember like trying to stay in touch with these people via email i think being like what's the update on snookers or whatever the cat's name was and i think that ended up having a happy ending i mean happy ish i wasn't the hero i didn't find the cat myself that would have been the best happy ending right like i heard that you actually stole the cat so that you could be the hero and find it was a it was a real Groot move i don't know anything about minion is it no not Groot god damn it i messed up Groot right everybody's talking minions and i'm totally out of the Groot i'm out of the minion verse but i see that it's like the biggest cultural thing going on right now and i'm trying to trying to work my way into it by making guardians of the galaxy references uh classically um somebody did make a

00:19:13 - 00:19:43 | Speaker 2:

a poster that was like you know the shen yun thing oh yeah that like that like i think it's like falun gong technically is who whatever the falun gong like movement is church political i don't even know what really what falun gong is but they do that dance performance that's just so advertised everywhere and like i don't who goes to that like now coming to the meadowlands in new jersey shen yun but somebody did a minion minion and so it's like basically that exact

00:19:43 - 00:19:59 | Speaker 1:

aesthetic of shen yun but with a minion do you know that every time i see those posters i cringe a little bit because i didn't notice them you told me about it on tbtl you were just mentioning mentioning those posters and passing or maybe you were even just like making a joke about them and I spoiled your joke because I had no

00:20:00 - 00:20:41 | Speaker 2:

idea what you're talking about i'm like shen young no you're like you've seen them i'm like i haven't seen them you're like you've seen them i ain't seen you shaking my fist at the microphone and then suddenly without touching me it started to feel like i was choking and i started like trying to unbutton my top button the weird our dynamic um but uh no and then of course after you said that i saw them everywhere it was like the scales fell from my eyes and suddenly it was like a magic eye situation where suddenly all i could see were the shen young young posters all over my neighborhood and on every bus and it was like it was like it was like a scene out of a movie where everything around me was shen young i was in one of the posters speaking of posters i was in the

00:20:41 - 00:21:26 | Speaker 1:

elevator in my building yesterday and i was going up and the elevator stopped on like a weird floor because i was like who's going up from the third floor and it was a very nice guy who just had a little he goes oh i just wanted to tape this sign inside the elevator and it was a handwritten sign that basically said would anyone like to water my would anyone like to make 20 watering my plants while i'm out of town for two weeks um etc etc and then his info and i thought 20 was a weird amount of money to offer like it's i mean maybe if there was a kid there are i don't think there are any children that live in this building like if you were a kid that'd be a great deal But like if you're an adult, are you watering someone's plants for two weeks for $20?

00:21:27 - 00:22:16 | Speaker 2:

Yeah, it's almost like that thing where you would get better results if you obviously made it more money or no money for free. Yeah, because then you're like a neighborly thing. Like that's that weird that's that weird valley of like almost undervaluing the whole situation. You know what I mean? Just make it seem like a neighborly favor. I would almost be tempted by that if I saw somebody left a sweet little sign and, you know, it's not a big deal and I can water somebody's plants and then go through their stuff. I mean, forget about that last part. You know what I mean? Like, it's nice to have little moments of neighborly. Wear their clothes. Yeah. Maybe you wear their clothes. Brush your teeth with their toothbrush just to really feel what it's like. You know what I mean? I just like to really inhabit it or leave it in the cabinet. Anyway, yeah, that's a strange offer. I'd be interested to know, are you considering it? No, you're on the road too much yourself. That cash could get me out of a couple of jams.

00:22:17 - 00:23:25 | Speaker 1:

You haven't been on the road in a while. No, I haven't. And I'm going to Port Townsend tomorrow. Is it tomorrow, Thursday? Yes, I'm going to Port Townsend tomorrow, which doesn't really count as the road. I'm just going to drive up there. But, yeah, I am mercifully in a bit of a travel break here, which I'm loving. Except I do have to go to Bismarck, North Dakota in August, Andrew, because i'm going to interview the guy who's kind of in charge of deciding what national day it is like it's national hot dog day it's national siblings day there's a guy in bismarck north dakota because of course he's in bismarck who like maintains this calendar and is is basically the person who decides what what day it's going to be and let me just tell you there are no flights to Bismarck I mean I maybe if you get to Fargo you can fly to Bismarck but like it it's weird in this day and age I mean you know we can we can put a man on the moon but we can't get me to

00:23:25 - 00:23:30 | Speaker 2:

Bismarck in under four flights wow by the way do you know that today is an international kissing

00:23:30 - 00:23:50 | Speaker 1:

day and national fried chicken day hmm i intentionally didn't tell you about the kissing part because of some of our some of our complicated history i wanted to do the show in person today and you refused weird it's international kissing day now i don't know if this guy is in charge of the international stuff i think he's i think he's more u.s based i'm not even kidding no no i'm

00:23:50 - 00:24:35 | Speaker 2:

laughing at something else because i'm on a website you know i mean these days are so i mean i they're so mockable right but apparently somehow this guy allowed take your webmaster to lunch day as july 6th treat your webmaster to lunch or in some other way to show your appreciation take your webmaster i swear i mean i'm not saying it's a real thing i'm saying it's really online though like somebody somebody at some point petitioned to make july 6th take your webmaster to lunch day especially in the day and age of the internet we've all been there you're running short on time but the website keeps freezing and you if you don't get xyz done in time it's game over this is where a webmaster can help you maybe it also sounds like maybe it could help you there

00:24:35 - 00:25:00 | Speaker 1:

like who in the world set up take your webmaster i'll tell you who a webmaster i believe so it's also apparently national hand roll day which like the food like a hand roll like a sushi hand roll okay it's like national but not like not you know rolled by some machine not rolled by just the forces of nature but if you roll

00:25:00 - 00:25:05 | Speaker 2:

it by hand today good on you because it's national it's also it's like a hand roll fried chicken a

00:25:05 - 00:25:18 | Speaker 1:

hand roll is different than the other like you get a sushi roll that's cut up into coins that's one thing but when you get a hand roll it's it's rolled up in in like a cone shape right isn't that the way i didn't know that have you ever had that though can you picture it much to learn on

00:25:18 - 00:26:28 | Speaker 2:

this national hand roll day for me exactly that's why they do it here's the only thing i'll say about sushi and i think this is this came up when i was living in that other building i was there was like three really great sushi places that were just in walking distance so i was kind of eating a lot veggie sushi is indistinguishable from sushi that has raw fish in it so if you're someone who's not down with raw fish for whatever reason try the veggie sushi because when you slather as much wasabi ginger and soy sauce on your sushi as i do that's all you can taste all i can taste is the wasabi absolutely just blasting just pressure washing out my sinuses do you put the ginger on the sushi i do not but i don't know if i'm i put it in the little tray oh okay and then i pour this is my move i put the ginger actually it's in the tray usually when it shows up it's in the tray and then i pour the soy sauce over and then i put always too much wasabi into the soy sauce into the soy sauce and i mix it all up in kind of a slurry and then i i dip the sushi in that and then i eat it and then i have a seizure because of the wasabi why did i put that much wasabi in it maybe i'll

00:26:28 - 00:26:48 | Speaker 1:

do that i like wasabi a lot i put the wasabi in the soy sauce as well but i i usually just leave the ginger alone i had heard and i don't know where i heard this probably on the back of the e-line bus or something so just take it for whatever it's worth but um i had heard that the ginger you're supposed to eat after as a palate cleanser have you heard this no but i think ginger

00:26:48 - 00:27:08 | Speaker 2:

i feel like ginger is one of those things that children do not have a taste for i hated ginger when i was a kid and now i love it so much i feel like that's one of those things that you age into i also hated onions when i was a kid and now i love them um trying to think of some other examples of that but i just feel like do you know any kids who like love ginger give me more ginger on that

00:27:08 - 00:27:19 | Speaker 1:

please well no but i can't relate to that honestly because i can't remember encountering ginger when i was a kid we weren't a sushi family and the only ginger i can think of would be like a ginger beer

00:27:19 - 00:27:26 | Speaker 2:

or they didn't have the town sushi place in valley center ohio yeah valley city it was right after the

00:27:26 - 00:28:52 | Speaker 1:

um the uh frog jump competition uh outside the valley city street everyone would celebrate with a hand roll of exactly smothered in ginger yeah um northeast rural northeast ohio is where you get some of the freshest fish actually i don't know that um so anyway yeah uh so i don't know about that i will say see i'm a bad i'm a bad person to weigh in on this because i was such a picky eater growing up and i'm still a pretty big picky eater now but there are a lot of foods that i will mess with now that i wouldn't touch as a kid i would say the main one though the one that brings me the most joy now as an adult that i i even attempted it several times as a kid and just it would make me gag were tomatoes i remember seeing other members of my family just loving on tomatoes in the summertime some of them that we would grow in our own garden cherry tomatoes popping them in my dad would eat a my dad would pluck a tomato like a full tomato off of the vine in the garden and eat it like an apple and he would just like talk about how it was like the best part of summer and i would try it and i just hated the texture and i think the taste too so much and now of course i i'm there i made it everybody i love cherry tomatoes i love i i eat all kinds of tomatoes not to brag but um the the pleasure of popping uh like a a nice juicy cherry tomato that is still like very taut this is what it's taught there's something about growing it

00:28:52 - 00:29:15 | Speaker 2:

though i think that's probably i bet you that was 50 of bob's satisfaction is like eating something from the land you know what i'm thinking about by the way if you heard me laughing in the background it's because i googled sushi valley city ohio oh you know the top three results gandolph's pub and restaurant not family diner and ice cream parlor and samasky's home style

00:29:15 - 00:29:38 | Speaker 1:

pizzeria is that as in lenny samasky first of all good job you remember my childhood friend lenny samasky i do believe there is a family connection there i can't remember exactly what it is but i do believe it is the same but that somehow is related to the same samaskis where i was one day fishing in lenny's backyard and for no reason at all i just fell over into the water fully clothed and that's why i'm scared of heights because i never know when i'll just fall over

00:29:38 - 00:29:49 | Speaker 2:

places the best sushi places in valley city are a place called gandolph's pub yeah a family diner and ice cream parlor and then lenny samaskis family's home style pizzeria i would that's

00:29:49 - 00:31:30 | Speaker 1:

where you get your i would just stay away from sushi in valley city then you know maybe take the drive to brunswick is what i would say all right uh hey speaking of food andrew we we have have to talk about subway after the break yes i know you've got you've got thoughts and we want to hear them coming up here on tbtl hello and welcome to top story all right subway is revamping its menu yet again starting actually yesterday uh if you walk into a subway now you will see 12 sandwiches that are listed as the Subway series menu. It's described as a new, more neatly organized menu divided into four categories. Your cheesesteaks, your Italianos, your chickens, and your clubs. Those are the four sandwich categories now at Subway. And they say all 12 sandwiches are new to the menu, with some essentially replacing previous versions with new names and slight tweaks. For example, the meatball marinara sandwich is now called The Boss and newly added melted mozzarella cheese on it. This is an attempt to stop the sort of exodus from the subway experience that's been going on over the last few years. They made $12 billion in 2013 and they're down to $9 billion of late. And their number of locations has declined for the fifth year in a row people are not going to subway like they used to this is supposed to fix it now why did this of all stories andrew uh touch such a nerve for you because i think

00:31:30 - 00:32:38 | Speaker 2:

and i could be wrong but in hearing you describe the story or or uh capsulize the story i think you're missing could be wrong here but i think you're missing the big change okay it's not just a rebranding of these sandwiches i will start though before i get into because i'm sort of freaking out about this story before i before i get to the negative stuff i want to talk about the one positive and it's kind of big for me i used to get meatball sandwiches at subway not all the time but there was a time when that was my go-to a long long time ago every now and then i'll still go and get a meatball sandwich but it's rare they're not bad for a cheap fast food meatball sandwich but they never had mozzarella cheese they had and you know me i'm weird about my cheese oh right they had some sort of like uh i can't remember what their white colored cheese was it's american i believe maybe they had american they had something jack they had something like a pepper jack i think i'd always say do you have mozzarella cheese for the thing that no we have pepper jack i'd be like i don't know why you're saying pepper jack when i'm saying mozzarella just you say no i don't have like is there anything similar between mozzarella and pepper jack cheese

00:32:38 - 00:32:53 | Speaker 1:

i've never had no not in fact they they really couldn't be much more different from a flavor standpoint they do also have this it's um it's an american cheese but it's not yellow like craft singles it's white that's kind of their default setting for a lot of things so i don't usually

00:32:53 - 00:34:39 | Speaker 2:

do cheese at all i will eat melted mozzarella on something so the fact that they are revamping their um their meatball sub and adding mozzarella cheese is something not to sleep on that is in calling it the boss okay fine um but the thing i just love that they think that's the issue No, no, no. What the issue here is, Luke, is they are taking this, it sounds like, from a fast food or fast casual restaurant where it's mostly built on a build your own model. Like you start with a basic, like I always get an Italian, like an Italian BMT or a spicy Italian. And then you go through and you're like, I want this on it, this on it, this on it, this on it. I'm pretty sure what they're saying is we're de-emphasizing the build your own. We are now creating sandwiches that we think like what was here's the actual quote here that that that has me worried. Complementary flavors and an expertly crafted balance of proteins, cheese, sauces and fresh vegetables are designed to maximize taste and crave. Who doesn't want their taste and crave maximize bananas, taste and crave brand cat food? These changes are to allow customers, quote, to explore new options beyond their beloved build-your-own customization. Do you know the number one reason I usually go into a Subway is because it's one of the only restaurants I can trust with my order because they will build it right there in front of me. Chipotle is the other one, too. Like, you go into a fast food restaurant. You order a burger. You don't want the cheese that naturally comes on that burger. You've got to request that the chance of that burger coming to you without cheese is at best 50 50. I'm going to say.

00:34:39 - 00:34:41 | Speaker 1:

And this is you've lived it. So, oh, I live. Yes.

00:34:41 - 00:34:59 | Speaker 2:

And, you know, again, picky eater guy over here. And so the thing about Subway is, I mean, I guess maybe the number one driving thing for me to go to a Subway as opposed to another fast food places. I'm usually in the middle of the day. I don't want like a big greasy burger and greasy fries. Right. Like there is something about the relative freshness of it. Not that it's health food by any.

00:35:00 - 00:35:33 | Speaker 1:

By any means especially what I order But like I order I actually did a Hey dummies about this not all that long ago like I order kind of a weird thing A weird flavor combination I get like Usually one of the two Italian cold Cut sandwiches I don't get it toasted I get it on Italian bread and then I'll Put like and I don't think like any of their Sandwiches are going to be weird like this I'll put on Spinach which is like you know Whatever that's pretty normal but then I'll put On those yellow pepper chinis And then red onions and then Honey mustard I didn't even realize that was a weird order until Genevieve looked at me one time like I was nuts getting honey mustard on

00:35:33 - 00:35:43 | Speaker 2:

something like that. That is surprising for someone who I think, you know, plays it pretty much down the middle on food ingredients or things like that. That's an out there order. I know. I don't know why I

00:35:43 - 00:35:51 | Speaker 1:

like that. It's weird. It's tangy. It's sweet with the mustard. It's a strange ass sandwich, but that's what I get. That also describes TBTL.

00:35:51 - 00:35:53 | Speaker 2:

R.I.P. marsupial gurgle. That would have been a great one.

00:35:54 - 00:37:15 | Speaker 1:

It's weird. It's tangy. It's sweet. Don't do it, Lynn. Just keep driving. Enjoy the show. um but uh you know i am yeah so anyway but a huge driver for me is i can go in and i can build that and they can i here's the here's the tell i'm just even thinking of this right now i will go in and i'll say i will take an italian bmt not toasted no cheese the person 99.9 times out of 100 will start slapping the the um meat on the bread and then it'll say what kind of cheese they just don't hear it just muscle memory muscle memory and i'm not blaming them like they're those sandwich artists are like some of them are at the local subway that i go to which is in a rough part of aurora like you can either get the grumpiest gruffest person who's working back there or this young woman who is the nicest person to ever work in the service industry and it seems like legitimately interested in everybody's days i actually think that's a really hard job and so So even if I get the grumpster, I always give them the benefit of the doubt. And again, they're building the sandwich right in front of me. But it's muscle memory. They're putting cheese on these things all the time. People don't hear the words no cheese until you say it like three times. The cock will not crow until I say no cheese three times in a subway. So this is really they're deemphasizing the builder.

00:37:15 - 00:37:23 | Speaker 2:

If it be your will, take this extra large cup of Diet Dr. Pepper from me.

00:37:23 - 00:37:31 | Speaker 1:

Lord, if it be your will, remove these Sun Chips from my hand. Sun Chips. Like, what is this going to do to the Sun Chips industry?

00:37:31 - 00:37:39 | Speaker 2:

Is Subway keeping the Sun Chips brand in business just personally? I feel like you never see Sun Chips outside of the Subway.

00:37:39 - 00:38:48 | Speaker 1:

I know. It's always Sun Chips. So anyway. It's always Sun Chips and fill a Subway. What? That was going somewhere and then it didn't. But anyway, yeah. Like, I think this is going to completely. I think they're going to have these sandwiches that are. i'm sure they're not like pre-made and just sitting back there but i'm sure they just want to slap them together quickly and i'm sure i can say no cheese three times and have them remove the cheese and if i wanted to swap in like hold this i'm sure they could do it but they're moving away from that they're just saying hey we're gonna have a menu now you order these sandwiches which is how 99 of i think i said 99 like three times in this show that is how most sandwich places operate but that was that to me was the quote-unquote killer app remember take your webmaster to work day take him to subway um that was the killer app of subway that they make it in front of you and you can just tell them to put on whatever you want like this idea of going to more standardized sandwiches which i assume you know i don't know if it's just they think that the menu is going to attract more customers or if it's also going to help their workforce maybe they're having workforce issues as well but like i don't know that's a negative for me dog well

00:38:48 - 00:39:28 | Speaker 2:

the part that i'm so perplexed by is what is the what is the business interest that's being served by this do they think that part of what is because i'm presuming that what's cut into subways business is like competition from your jimmy johns of the world yeah quiz knows and things like that and um you know a variety of other sort of market forces but do they think that people are like not going to subway because they have to actually order their own sandwich and they can't just walk in and say give me a the boss like do they think that's going to sell more sandwiches if there's just a bunch of pre-made options or pre-listed options yeah it seems like

00:39:28 - 00:40:28 | Speaker 1:

they should lean into something else right like make something else like what is very much their own is the the the style of restaurant you go in it's like whether or not you like it that is their brand and has been their brand since they've been a national chain right you go in you can picture it the line starts here you walk through you tell them this this this and this like don't abandon what is your core business maybe find some other angle to compete with those other things jimmy johns is known for their fast delivery maybe you get into some sort of delivery thing create a partner With one of the delivery apps I don't know There are ways you can tackle this but don't Change the core Of what you do I have a prediction Luke I could be wrong about this but if they are Able to stay in business It sounds like things are pretty dire on the financial front I have a feeling this is going to be Like that JCPenney experiment That we referred to last week that lasted Like six months or something I think it's going to be A surprising A surprisingly short period of time before They totally reverse course

00:40:28 - 00:41:10 | Speaker 2:

on this maybe just double down on the smell you know how the smell of a subway is one of those polarizing yeah i love i like it but there are people uh who just detest it nobody is just medium on the smell of a subway it's either great or the worst thing you've ever smelled double the smell just like saying this is they should say just be like if you like the smell of subway now there's double the amount or hey you know how we have the hardest benches ever we made them harder we now offer the hardest benches in the fast casual game like yeah right just make it you know what our stores are now more yellow i will say i will say that subway

00:41:10 - 00:41:39 | Speaker 1:

is one of the i think there's a pretty wide range of subways but the subways that i have found myself in recently it's one of the least likely places that i will sit down and actually take advantage of the dining room in right like occasionally at a burger king if you need to or a mcdonald's which has revamped a lot of theirs to be like mccafes or whatever like there is something and i'm not saying i've never done it or that i never will again but there's often something slightly soul crushing about eating a sandwich in a subway

00:41:39 - 00:43:28 | Speaker 2:

yeah it's well i don't i think we did we eat in a subway in australia did we eat in a subway we got a subway in australia and i swear to god it was like one of the best meals i've ever had now that one might have been was that the one in a gas station i believe so we're very close adjacent to a gas station and i just want to say in the in the words of um you know johnny depp and amber heard australia is a wonderful island but you know there was a lot of limited food options for me with not eating the meat like particularly the further that you and i got out into the outback where i was just on a pretty hardcore diet of french fries oh that's right because you were yeah you weren't eating meat then because it'd be like you know would you like the kangaroo steak or the um cattle steak and i'd be like what do you have um i'm vegan and then they would just look at me ah the lettuce steak you call that a lettuce steak wow that was bad even by my standards um but i just remember going to that subway and really kind of like tipping my cap to this and this is the same thing that mcdonald's which we're actually going to get to in a moment this is of course what mcdonald's is sort of famous for is if you supposedly you know if you order a mcdonald's if you order french fries at mcdonald's and you are in um denver or dubai they're supposed to taste pretty much exactly the same and there really is something about that consistency which has to be kind of a feat to pull off in terms of just supply chain like how is it that that subway in that gas station in australia had the exact same ingredients as one that i would go to in portland so that i could get what i was looking for which was a very specific kind of food experience and it like it worked out i just remember being so happy to be eating that veggie sub sandwich at that subway and i'll tell you what like

00:43:28 - 00:44:28 | Speaker 1:

on my various road trips even the one a couple years ago when genevieve and i drove to um the grand canyon um and then my recent trip to denver in fact i'm trying to think my first big stop and both of those trips ended up being in the same small washington town that is basically just a stop on the highway and i ended up in the same exact like truck stop uh subway oh you know this town you would know it if i said i'll bet you you've eaten at the subway before too but anyway i do like subway as an option when i'm like on a road trip because there's something about eating something like really greasy like if you were to stop and get like a a burger and fries or onion rings or whatever like i think that would just sit with me in a in a bad way as i'm then getting on the road to do another five six seven hours or whatever i think i would just feel kind of gross about it whereas a subway is actually my go-to kind of road food again i know it's not health food people but it's it doesn't weigh on me so much doctors associates is that really the

00:44:28 - 00:44:57 | Speaker 2:

name of the that's like the parent company is like called like uh i'm googling this yeah it's like definitely i feel like part of um yeah doctors associates incorporated is the company that owns subway yeah and i just remember as a kid people were like i think i think part of subway's kind of appeal was that it was considered to be a healthy alternative to burgers and fries which is probably a little bit better than that but it is not health food yes definitely not health food

00:44:57 - 00:44:59 | Speaker 1:

but it also just doesn't make me feel...

00:45:00 - 00:45:40 | Speaker 2:

I don't know. For some reason, it doesn't make me feel as bad if I'm then going to be sitting there with myself. It's not as greasy, depending on what you get. Yeah. So anyway, so I don't know. We'll see how this goes. I was reading this yesterday, and I was just like, as you can tell, I was pretty worked up about it. I mean, I was going to say I'll never darken their door. I mean, I guess I'll go, and I'll see what the deal is. I also wonder, like, how quickly they'll make these changes. Like, I have a feeling that the subway on Aurora and 125th might be the last subway. Can you picture this place, man? It is rough. That is a rough corner. What is it near?

00:45:40 - 00:45:43 | Speaker 1:

You said it's 125th. So it's like by that.

00:45:43 - 00:46:31 | Speaker 2:

So there's like the Arco is there. I believe it's in the same parking lot as a gas station. And it's just like one of those rough corners on Aurora. And there's like a little Convenient Mart there usually and I Still go I mean I'll go to the subway I'll get a sandwich to go and then I go to the convenient Mart and I try to buy like whatever chips They have and a soda that's usually My move oh I know where this it's by Putz it's by the driving range kind Of yeah yeah a little I think it's a little Bit north of Putz I think There is a there's Like an kind of an old school Bar and grill Across the street from it that actually has It's a little bit of old school charm, but it's going away. Veeves and I were kind of excited to have it be one of our little, it's like a steakhouse and bar and grill across the way. Yeah, that used to be when I was a kid.

00:46:32 - 00:47:22 | Speaker 1:

Yeah, when I was a kid, that place used to be a Stuart Anderson's, what was the, he had a, there was a like regional steakhouses that was like, I want to say Sizzler, but it's not. It was another one. and uh i remember going to that okay sorry long i'll try to make this long tangent not so long but i remember being a kid and when i learned that surprise parties are possibly a bad idea was when i was riding in the back of my uncle mike's car with this guy named kelly potts who went to our church and the deal was we there was a surprise party being thrown for my uncle mike who wasn't my uncle at that point he was just a guy that went to our church and he really wanted to go to whatever that steward anderson's um i can't believe that i i can't i can't remember

00:47:22 - 00:47:26 | Speaker 2:

the name of it right now it's gonna bother me but because it's like steward anderson's and then

00:47:26 - 00:47:57 | Speaker 1:

that's a name of a restaurant yeah like i'll look it up while you talk um black angus black angus um black angus was that what it was called um yeah it was called black angus there's one still in uh vancouver washington okay seems like the place where there'd be the last remaining steward anderson's black angus so my uncle mike it was his birthday and he really wanted to go to steward anderson's black angus which would become eventually the thing that you're looking at when you're walking out of that subway i see so that's it and again i don't mean it's like

00:47:57 - 00:48:36 | Speaker 2:

it's not like it's not a dangerous part of town but like i don't think i've ever been in that parking lot without like somebody who's out of their noggin like tapping on my window or whatever it's a vibe yeah exactly and so i will say though and so there's this um there's this a quickie mart next door and again it's not it's not the best quickie mart in the world but um that is my move usually with a subway maybe it's the maybe it's because of all the sun chips but like my preference is to go to subway just get the sandwich and then go to a quickie mart and get the most fun potato chips and soda that i can find in the quickie mart um wait sorry

00:48:36 - 00:49:31 | Speaker 1:

no problem you zoned out you're looking at black zoned out i was i was i was shocked by the fact that black angus steakhouse apparently does 150 million dollars in revenue a year oh it's still going which i'm shocked by it's like the one in vancouver is doing 150 million dollars oh just to quickly put a put a bow on that the reason that i learned that surprise parties are a bad idea was because my uncle mike was furious that we couldn't go to steward anderson's black angus because it was his birthday and that's where he wanted to go but we kelly potts had to get him to some other location because that's where the surprise party was and I knew there was a surprise party I remember just riding in the back of the car thinking this is just terrible yeah this is a terrible plan this man is this man is so angry that he can't go to Stuart Anderson's Black Angus on Aurora but this other person is trying to do something nice for him but like this is playing out like a slow speed car crash

00:49:31 - 00:49:59 | Speaker 2:

the idea of a surprise party causes me so much stress obviously nobody would throw one for me because you would know that that would be my worst nightmare but even being part of one or especially if you're if oh god i think i have been in the role i think it's like a maybe when i was in college i think i maybe had to drive maybe an aunt or an uncle or maybe as even my dad or something there had to be some sort of i always say this word wrong but i always want to say it's subter subterfuge

00:50:00 - 00:50:24 | Speaker 1:

Subterfuge. Subterfuge. Right. Am I saying that right? Subterfuge. Yeah. Subterfuge. Yeah. There is always some sort of subterfuge. And I need to just come up with a better word because I'm never going to get that. But I hate it so much. Like even a little lie like that can kind of spin out of control or make things awkward. Or am I getting here too early? Am I getting here too late? Like I just hate surprise parties like every aspect of them.

00:50:24 - 00:50:50 | Speaker 2:

i seem to remember eventually kelly just had to tell my uncle mike we have to go to marine's house because there is a party for you there like he just cracked yeah because he couldn't make a logical argument as to why we couldn't go to steward anderson's black angus yeah on this the day of my uncle mike's birth like there was no he couldn't explain why it was we couldn't go there other than eventually just going it's because we're having a surprise party for you yeah and

00:50:50 - 00:50:54 | Speaker 1:

And by the time you get to that, the tensions are so high. It's just like nobody feels like partying.

00:50:54 - 00:52:06 | Speaker 2:

I was just like in the backseat as a kid. I'll tell you, speaking of my Uncle Mike, my Uncle Mike was really, really into photography. And he had this very expensive photography setup, like a camera bag with all the lenses and the camera and the whole thing. And one time we were going to a church camp out. And I was riding in the backseat again. I was somehow always in the backseat of my Uncle Mike's car. I was in the backseat with some other kid from the church. And we were arguing Me and this kid were just like bugging each other Kind of fighting or whatever And so my Uncle Mike pulls the car over This is on Aurora, actually not far from You know, kind of the Northgate area And he gets this cooler He basically takes some stuff out of the car Including this cooler that he then puts between us So that now there's like a physical barrier And in the midst of doing this He takes his very expensive camera case And puts it on the roof of the car And then drives away and realizes it like a mile later and then gets off the freeway, circles back, and as we re-arrive at the scene, there's just glass all over I-5 and the shoulder. That shit is so expensive. And what I tell you, I can't believe I survived that.

00:52:06 - 00:52:08 | Speaker 1:

That was your guys' fault.

00:52:08 - 00:52:25 | Speaker 2:

Only because my Aunt Mary Lou was there. I think if my Aunt Mary Lou, again, I don't think they were even married. They were just like dating or something. Whatever dating looked like at my weird-ass church. Sure. Courting. But only because my Aunt Mary Lou was in the passenger seat My mom's sister Did I survive that Because if she would have been gone They would have never found my body

00:52:25 - 00:52:28 | Speaker 1:

I kind of want to kill you a little bit

00:52:28 - 00:52:54 | Speaker 2:

The other food story I want to talk about today Is this situation in Russia Where You probably heard in the news that McDonald's It was one of the big American companies That just said we're pulling out of Russia Because of the stuff in Ukraine And so they sold the whole operation to a company called Veskuzno and Tochka, which means in Russian, tasty and that's it.

00:52:55 - 00:53:00 | Speaker 1:

Again, man, you just got to like, don't oversell. Like, that's the important thing.

00:53:00 - 00:53:02 | Speaker 2:

Tasty and that's it.

00:53:02 - 00:53:04 | Speaker 1:

That just, it's funny because that feels,

00:53:04 - 00:53:14 | Speaker 2:

it feels almost like a McDonald's phrase, but kind of not. It's like, you know what I mean? You can hear. It's like, it's like, I'm loving its Russian cousin.

00:53:14 - 00:53:28 | Speaker 1:

who's tasty and that's it who's uh brian um who's the actor who does uh the mcdonald's commercials do do do do do oh yeah from succession yeah uh oh my gosh this is right

00:53:28 - 00:54:46 | Speaker 2:

thank you yes you can just hear brian thank you for helping me tasty tasty and that's it so um there have been all these pictures on social media of the um kind of low quality food that apparently tasty and that's it is now selling burgers that are like burger buns that are moldy and somebody found what they said was an insect leg i don't know it could have also just been like a it didn't i wasn't 100 sold that it was obviously an insect leg on one of the patties it was some kind of weird little thing that was inexplicable but it could have been a bunch of different things but um what i think is kind of interesting is that this seems to be it's kind of being taken up as an anti-Vladimir Putin thing so somebody who's driving the conversation is a Russian TV personality named Senia Sobchak who is like all over Twitter and other social media saying that basically this new version of McDonald's sells moldy burgers and this is what you get in Putin's Russia so you have like the people who are going the hardest on this are basically anti-putin and so this is seen as like i guess evidence of how you know russia is failing because of putin because the new mcdonald's kind of sucks well i'll tell you what

00:54:46 - 00:54:52 | Speaker 1:

i'm no longer gonna set foot in any russian mcdonald's until they until they backtrack on

00:54:52 - 00:55:00 | Speaker 2:

this moldy bun situation this can i just say though this is what jumped out at me about the article because i think you know a lot of people were like good

00:55:00 - 00:55:55 | Speaker 3:

job to mcdonald's for their corporate responsibility um to say we're not going to do business in a country that's invading another democracy but if you read this article mcdonald's retains the right to buy back their business after 15 years oh really oh yeah why was nobody reporting that basically the mcdonald's is just hitting pause mcdonald's is just like we're gonna sell all these restaurants to this russian you know situation and we're going to make a bunch of money off of that and we're going to get some kind of you know um reputational um sort of shine but also hey if it's going great over there we can come back and just take these buy these back in 15 years huh no i did i did i had not heard that at all yeah which i feel like people were kind of burying an important part of this story which is mcdonald's has not left russia they've just basically taken a 15 year break and then if you know the economics of it look good they'll

00:55:55 - 00:56:29 | Speaker 4:

just go back into russia yeah i was gonna say even like i mean i remember when that that news did break it was within days of the war breaking out um and you know you're like well that's good i'm glad that they're doing this but also it doesn't seem like they had i mean would you really have much of a choice it's also just like a i mean the backlash to mcdonald's here in the states would probably be so big especially in those early weeks of the war um that it was just it was just a business decision too it wasn't because they were necessarily doing the right thing even though it happened to be the right thing to do if that makes sense there are all

00:56:29 - 00:56:41 | Speaker 3:

these weird rules now for tasty and that's it as to what they can do they are barred from selling big macs or mcflurries due to trademark law that makes sense they should i mean they if it's not

00:56:41 - 00:56:50 | Speaker 4:

a mcdonald's they can't sell i mean i also wonder how much these people care and how mcdonald's right force it but like yeah you shouldn't be able to say i can't i can't open up a restaurant

00:56:50 - 00:57:18 | Speaker 3:

and start selling mcflurries i guess although it's like you bought you bought what did you buy i guess you bought the physical buildings and they did get the a lot of the ingredients they um they still have access to many of the same ingredients that are used to make the regular mcdonald's stuff but it's like what did you actually purchase then if you can't make big max you can't make mcflurries you had to change the name is it just the locations and you hope people just kind of wander in because they're used to wandering in yeah that is interesting i guess

00:57:18 - 00:57:39 | Speaker 4:

if you are getting most maybe that's why the ingredients are moldy they bought one they bought one batch of ingredients and they're going to use it as long as they can um yeah i'm not i'm not i'm not exactly sure how that works and as far as franchising is concerned but my guess is they are operating these as close to the the format and taste of a of a real mcdonald's here i go once

00:57:39 - 00:57:46 | Speaker 1:

again with the email every week i hope that it's from a female no man it's not from a female

00:57:46 - 00:57:58 | Speaker 3:

i am so off this week as to what day it is before the show you accidentally played the like two seconds of the blurs day song and i was like oh it is blurs day no it's not blurs day

00:57:58 - 00:58:04 | Speaker 4:

That Monday really threw me off. We do have some Blur's days trickling in, though. Tomorrow we'll be a Blur's days.

00:58:04 - 00:58:08 | Speaker 3:

So we have more than one, which is what we had last week? Yeah, exactly.

00:58:08 - 00:58:22 | Speaker 4:

I wanted to hear this. Subterfuge. Subterfuge. I need to keep practicing that. It's a word that I feel like I need that, and I know how to spell it, and I know how to read it, but I clearly have problems saying subterfuge.

00:58:23 - 00:58:23 | Speaker 2:

Subterfuge.

00:58:24 - 00:59:59 | Speaker 4:

I'm also hitting the G a little bit soft, huh? subterfuge subterfuge thank you um let's see here how about oh i have an email i want to read for you here luke actually i've been meaning to read this to you this is from somebody in i will just say colorado but uh prefers to remain anonymous okay um and this is a situation they're having with their garbage bins in the neighborhood this is a confusing one to me so anonymous says on trash pickup day once the truck has come by our next door neighbor with whom we have no issues with otherwise or with whom we have no issues otherwise will take it upon himself to move our empty bin from the curb up onto our driveway where he leaves it sitting against our house next to the garage door this represents a distance of about 10 yards give or take so i only have to move it another five yards or so to the area where we keep our bins behind the fence. He doesn't seem to care about the recycling and yard waste bins at all, but those are only picked up every other week anyway. He also does this for his other next door neighbor, but no one else that we see on the block. He seems to have begun the habit sometime within the last year. Why he does so remains an open question. My wife says this is a non-issue, yet every time it happens, I feel slightly annoyed. There's the idea of somebody coming onto our property and messing with our stuff, even though I suppose technically the bins do belong to the city. There's the feeling that we're being admonished as if he's sending a subtle little message that we're too slow in getting our empty bin back behind.

01:00:00 - 01:00:37 | Speaker 2:

a privacy fence though again he does this for almost no one else and the other bins on the street remain visible well into the evening I guess it comes down to this would either of you say something to this neighbor if you were in my shoes or should I just accept the gesture as well intentioned if not all that helpful power out it's weird only does it for one bin even when there's three of them out there it's not that big of a help why is this person doing it is it passive aggressive and do we say anything boy normally i would just think that person is just

01:00:37 - 01:01:03 | Speaker 1:

doing something nice but you know because there are neighbors that do that like sometimes somebody will mow a section of someone's lawn or there are neighborly people that are just thoughtful that way but it is weird that it's not all of the bins and then when the person emailing said that they feel Like it might be a kind of a subtle admonishment, like you left your bins out too long. But then again, why is it only one of them? I don't know. What do you think?

01:01:03 - 01:02:13 | Speaker 2:

Well, this is one of those things where I'm not saying I'm right about my emotions here. But as you know, I'm very protective, especially because of the dog poop situation and neighbors putting potentially putting dog poop in my empty bin. That's like, you know, that could that could I don't want to say ruin my day, but, you know, that bums me out when that happens. So I'm very protective of my bins. there is something about this idea of a neighbor coming up onto your property and just doing this thing it just seems like it's not really yours to do it does sort of annoy me on behalf of this listener and i think it would annoy me if somebody was doing that to me especially if you're leaving two other bins down well that's the street every other week like that doesn't make sense to me i don't know if i would say anything i think what i would do the honest answer is and this is you know probably not helpful to this listener but i think i would be annoyed by it so i would become like obsessed with getting it before the neighbor could get it which is essentially maybe what the neighbor wants anyway but i would like i wouldn't say anything but i would just like start making sure i know when the trucks are coming and i'd be the first one out there to get my bins back and everybody else can keep their grubby little hands off them well should

01:02:13 - 01:02:19 | Speaker 1:

this listeners just start bringing one of that person's bins back to their house sounds like

01:02:19 - 01:02:37 | Speaker 2:

back to their house um it sounds like yeah yeah no i know what you mean like do the same thing it sounds like the it sounds like the person it sounds like the neighbor in this case is just out there first though it doesn't even sound like you know what i mean and if this if that were the case if you can get out there first just take care of your own shit don't worry about retaliation i would

01:02:37 - 01:03:36 | Speaker 1:

say yeah um yeah i don't i wish i i'm so out of the the garbage passive aggressivity game at this point andrew because i well that's not true i have my whole own situations going on here in my building which has to do with we have a garbage chute and i do not like it when people there's like a room and then people will throw stuff in the recycling that doesn't go there or they won't break down boxes or they'll like i the guy who does the maintenance here is this really sweet dude who i like so i like if i'm throwing out cat litter i like triple bag it so that there's no chance of it bursting as it falls down to the garbage chute level but sometimes i'll see people just kind of like throwing like like the other day there was a bag of cat litter that was caught it hadn't even gone all the way down the chute and just looked like it was going to explode the bottom and i was mad at whoever that was but as far as like i don't i have at the house that i'm working on i do have a garbage can but i don't even know if it gets picked up or not because i'm

01:03:36 - 01:03:43 | Speaker 2:

not there enough like yeah you haven't generated enough garbage there yet huh well i have but it's

01:03:43 - 01:04:04 | Speaker 1:

all on a big tarp so i have all this like debris um that i need to have someone come pick up at some point but um but yeah i don't my day-to-day life is i guess you could say blessed uh free of worrying about my cans how is your situation at the new house is it has it calmed down is it a lot better than it was uh in the roosevelt neighborhood yeah i mean as i said a million

01:04:04 - 01:05:00 | Speaker 2:

times in the old neighborhood like we had so many issues with the city not picking up our bins and then gallingly blaming us and saying they weren't out on time when they were and we would have to take photographic evidence every week just in case they were going to lie like it was the most frustrating thing in the world the city just like straight or the city's contractors then by way of the city just straight up lying to us when we know when our bins were out that was the most galling thing um and we have none of that here we have a schedule you know we live in a we live in a residential neighborhood now so there are a bunch of neighbors and so like if they didn't pick up our bins they wouldn't pick up our neighbor's bins either it would be a thing I assume right so we've had zero issues in fact Genevieve said something very nice the other day she just said we're just like really enjoying this place right well what are we like four months in now or something and Genevieve just said doesn't it seem like life is just sort of easier here and I don't mean easier like and maybe it is because it's more residential like I don't know if you would consider where we

01:05:00 - 01:05:56 | Speaker 3:

We live in the suburbs. We're still in Seattle. I think the listing did list this as like a suburban lot, which gave Genevieve and I the chills because we're snobs. But maybe that's part of it. Maybe that's why people love the suburbs. But like the thing is, Genevieve is like we don't have parking issues. We don't have garbage issues. We don't have neighbor issues. Like any of the little petty annoyances. Unfortunately, we have TBTL issues because my pettiness is what drove my half of this show for a long time. We're struggling for content. Thank God I had an adventure with my lawnmower. Yeah. We got to have something happen before tomorrow. But, yeah, it's just like we just feel so goddamn lucky that it's true. That's just like there's no like daily irritation or, you know, and again, I know it's a personality flaw for me. But, like, there's nothing eating away at me. Like, will they pick up the garbage? Won't they? Will the neighbor park too close or take up two spots or whatever?

01:05:56 - 01:05:58 | Speaker 2:

In fairness, do you miss your old landlord, though?

01:06:00 - 01:06:06 | Speaker 3:

I told you, yeah, I told you that they accidentally sent, did I, well, never mind, maybe not for TVTL. I'll tell you later.

01:06:08 - 01:06:09 | Speaker 2:

Sorry to leave that there.

01:06:09 - 01:06:23 | Speaker 3:

That was a real tease for the listeners. I just don't feel like getting, I don't feel like getting into it. I'm excited to get to hear this later, though. About our issues with our landlord when we were moving out. They were going to withhold some money we didn't feel like they should withhold. Let's just say that that turned out to be profitable for us.

01:06:24 - 01:07:21 | Speaker 2:

Oh, I'm happy to hear that was the outcome. All right. before you divulge more sensitive information we should probably wrap it up today yeah I want to say thanks to everyone for listening and remind you that we will be back here tomorrow with another edition of this here program so please do join us for that until then have a great Wednesday take care of yourselves and please remember no mountain too tall and good luck to you all you call that a knife this is a knife that's not a knife that's a spoon all right all right you

01:07:21 - 01:07:25 | Speaker 1:
