Andre the Dryant? Was he Andre the Giant or Andre the Dryant? I can't ever remember. I always mix those up. The Andre the Giant photo that was hanging at Nick's Coney Island here in Portland. Anybody want to feel it? That I noticed once when I was in there and was quite taken with. And then the hive mind of the TBTL listeners did a bunch of research based on the photo that I took of the photo. and figured out it was actually taken in Portland, an original. And, well, I've been to Nick's Coney Island, and I have interacted with Nick himself, and I'm going to tell you what happened coming up. Also, an Olympian from the U.S. volleyball team lost, I should say had stolen her Olympic gold medal, but somebody found it. It's your lucky day. In a very unexpected place. We'll talk about that. Oh, and speaking of sports, or in this case, made-up sports. Well, we know you're good at lying. Four men in India have been arrested for being part of a fake cricket match designed to trick Russian gamblers into thinking they were watching real cricket. I'm shocked this hasn't happened to me on one of my more desperate nights when I'm, you know, watching, like, betting on ping pong at four in the morning or something on my sports betting app. So we'll tell you what happened with all of that. And we'll talk to this guy, the longest-running co-bro of the show, maybe best known for his depictions of the tall ships. He is Andrew Walsh, and he's joining me right now. Good morning, my friend.

Good morning, Luke. It took me a second to unmute my microphone. That's not a harbinger of things to come. It's going to be a smooth show. It's going to be a fun show, but...

How do you feel about the fact that your new name is Andrew Hey-Lloyd Walsh? Are you going to have to, you know, go down to the DMV and change some paperwork now because that's your official name?

Well, it's funny that you bring that up because what I want to talk to you about at the top of the show here actually does involve our names and our branding because I did something yesterday without your permission that I think you're on board with. This is kind of an understanding that we've had for a while, but I went ahead and made an official change on something without actually checking with you. And actually, this ties into the idea of fake sports, too, because you and I have a fake baseball team together. Well, you have a fake baseball team. Yeah, a fantasy baseball team that we started together last year. You were invited to join this league. You asked if I would like to partner up with you to kind of ease the burden of it.

We did that. I did most of the messing around last year. You co-managed a little bit here and there until I yelled at you and you stopped.

To bring this back for a second show in a row, I really George Washington's axed you on this whole baseball fantasy thing where one day I'm just not even associated with the team and you're the sole manager.

However, your name was still listed first and it was still like, you know, the name of our team is the High School Bud Seeligs. And, you know, this year, at the beginning of the year, you're like, you just go ahead and take that over. Like, you know, you weren't really interested. You even said, do you want to take my name off? I said, no, no, we'll just, it'll give us something to talk about on the show. But it's been, you know, we're getting to the halfway mark of the season. It's been a rough road for the high school Bud Seeligs. We are in last place, not just in our division, but just in the entire 10-team league. I've been doing a lot of learning and growing. And it is true. It's been a great, honestly, this sounds so corny, but it's been a great learning experience for me. I was just getting my, well, I guess the baseball term is my ass handed to me week in and week out. And the way our league is scored is sort of complicated. I'm not going to get into it. But let's just say that I was losing in all of the categories. I think that's easy. Well, that actually sounds pretty straightforward. You know, now that I say it.

But they have an incredibly complicated system Wherein other people score many more points than me Yes, exactly

So about three weeks ago I believe I squeaked out a win Okay, so just barely It didn't really mean that much But I squeaked out a win against my opponent The week after that I tied And then this last week That just ended on Sunday night Monday morning I spanked our opponent Who happened to be at the time The number one team in the league And I really dominated last week I've been making moves I've been going to the wire I've been wheeling I've been dealing And now that we haven't lost In three weeks in a row I'm feeling a little bit of Not pride but just less shame As they say in the Simpsons And so I sent a note to the commissioner yesterday And I said I think it's time to fire Luke I think it's time for me to take ownership of this By the way, I'm still in absolute last place, absolute last place. So I'm not getting, you know, I'm not getting too far ahead of myself here. I'm not counting any chickens before they're hatched. But it did just sort of seem like this is officially my team now. Whatever happens, I will probably end up in last place. But it is my team. So I asked Joe to remove your name from the high school Bud Seeligs. As of this morning, it is Andrew Walsh's team. I assume that you've lost your login privileges, which I assume you probably took those away from yourself. not long after you logged in for the first time anyway, knowing your track record with logins.

No, each night, Andrew, I didn't tell you this, but every night, right before I go to bed, right before I say my prayers and drift off to slumber, I log into the High School Buds fantasy baseball team and I just check to see how you're doing. This, you know what, honestly, like, okay, the Mariners, as of, I think, three weeks ago, the Mariners were 10 games below 500 And just in an absolute free fall And around that same time Jesse Winker got into a fight With the entire Was it Anaheim? Yeah And everything changed in that moment Or it would seem to have Because they have now won I believe 8 in a row And 16 out of 19 or whatever They're the hottest team in baseball They're tied for the final playoff spot Which is kind of irrelevant at this point in the season But maybe this could be what the high school buds need you need to get rid of my name and that could really just somehow change up the do we say mojo

so do mojo i think we can still say mojo because yesterday we decided that we're not saying yeah i said a word that just sounded like i shouldn't say it anymore and i don't even i never got confirmation on that i think i said juju and i was like that sounds like something i probably

should not be saying so maybe the mojo will change for your fantasy baseball team now that you've uh or you know it's this is a better analogy my name may have been a certain like jonah-esque kind of you know component to your team and by that i mean the character jonah from veep oh my name was a very tall creepy kind of guy who no one ever liked having around

uh-huh um i was going with jonah hill um who was actually in moneyball so i don't know if that's good or bad but um uh i you know i mean just one other thing not to get too far into baseball here But, of course, you know, all of this is happening while Jesse Winker has been on our slash my team. And today, by the way, Luke, is the first day post Jesse Winker suspension. After that fight, he missed the last six games. And so now, of course, I'm trying to figure out, do I put. Jesse Winker in tonight is he going to come in Hot with something to Prove or is it going to take him a while to get back into the Groove these are the decisions I As a solo manager must be making going Forward so it doesn't sound like you're hurt by This I did tell Joe you know We need to disappear Luke and I want you to do this Quietly we don't need people sniffing around our business But now here I am making it Very very public you are Well this is tough to say Luke but I've Traded you to the abyss

a guy probably around my age beard um it's also the cook in the kitchen which you got to appreciate the guy owns the place and he's also back there cooking and um he uh it was again was i said are you nick and he goes sometimes and i was like hi i'm luke and this is a man who's been served before and i was just like how do i how do i actually get into this conversation sir can i borrow your andre the giant photo uh so that i can make a digital copy of it not to not

to jump in here but on the on the on the off chance that we have one new listener i mean did you did you already mention that this was a photo that really grabbed oh i guess you said that in your introduction of the show sorry so we don't need any setup for why this particular photo is

has captured your imagination so much but i mean yeah without without completely re-explaining it the the decor of this place nick's coney island is just tons and tons of framed photos many of them sports related there's like a signed mickey mantle thing there's a photograph of y.a tittle the quarterback from the i don't even think it was called the nfl yet there's just millions of photos and a lot of them are uh you know were were taken by the people who gave them to nick like they all have a story and uh so i was really captivated by this photo of andre the giant um uh but i also thought here's what i thought my sales pitch was really going to be and this is i got into this part of the pitch probably too quickly which was the photo the the glass that is this is a framed photo it's probably i don't know um 12 inches by eight inches and the the glass is cracked and so i thought what i could offer to nick is if you let me borrow this photo for an afternoon i will bring it back with a new piece of glass in it so it will look great so i said hey i'm luke um you know that andre the giant photo he's like yeah i was like i would really like to make a copy of it and what i will do is i will bring back the photo in a glass with a with a frame and glass that is intact and new glass and he goes no i actually like the crack

Nick is my kind of guy Of course he does that makes so much more sense I mean it's a patina That's such a cool response I thought that I was like Mr. Big Time Hollywood power player sweeping in there to just fix everyone's problems related to their Andre the Giant photo situation and he was like very nicely he was like no no actually that's kind of a cool element of it And he doesn't have any background on the photo or where he well he said i think he goes i've heard that that was taken somewhere in portland which then necessitated me saying well actually i host well first i lied and i said i host a radio

show well that's not a lie you do host a radio show i know but i didn't bring this up on live

wire right i said i host a radio show and i mentioned this photo and the listener started doing some research and they basically triangulated kind of where they think it was in portland um and uh he goes oh what radio show and i was like god foiled again and i said well um the radio show i do is called live wire but then i also do a podcast that's actually what i was talking about on which amazingly did not cause him to just say well what is it are you like you know i was caught yeah i was caught in a lie within 10 seconds of asking for this photo which isn't a great look I think that people can roll with that, especially because it's just easier to see.

radio sometimes i just think it would just be nice if we could just refer to everything like this as radio but okay yeah in 2022 i'm not surprised that didn't that didn't throw him like a didn't make him stumble too much over his thought processes so he but he doesn't have any kind of story about how it ended up there or or whatever it's just some random photo that he has

yeah and he was i was thinking that i was gonna have to give him like you know bubbles as collateral roll or and then I would have the photo for like exactly 60 minutes you know and like the timer would start and I would be like have to go directly to the photo lab and get it scanned and then bring it back I thought it was just going to be a whole thing and he just walks into Nick's Coney Island and walks over and just takes it off the wall and hands it to me yeah and he's like yeah have fun so and then I actually got the history of that place is really interesting um it the sign is so iconic that i thought for the longest time when i would see the sign i just thought oh these are some these are some hipsters who realize that to have a classic kind of cool old coney island style sign on their bar would be a cool thing but this is all probably you know like basically modern but no it's been there since like 1935 yes it was started by a guy named dominic he had it for like a decade and then this other guy bought it and he had it for like 50 years so it was really kind of his place this this the the guy who bought it after um the original nick uh and then he had it for like 50 years and then some another couple bought it and just had it for a little bit and then the latest nick bought it and his name is actually nick oh really yeah that's i

guess that that i didn't realize the beauty of that until i realized the history yeah

yes it's very it was serendipitous because i so as he and i were chatting more and he was showing me photos and i was getting more of the story on this place it's like i think the third oldest bar in portland or something i um i then i was like okay when do i broach the awkward question of what is your real name because remember when i said are you nick and he said sometimes i was like okay yeah this guy's name has to be um you know eugene and he just goes by nick because it's nick's famous coney island and he owns the joint and everyone calls him nick you know but he was like so at some point i was like so so what's your name when you're not being nick he looked at me very confused and he goes no my name is nick i go your name is actually nick and you bought a bar called nick's coney island he goes yeah that's how that happened so i have the photo i'm very excited i was making some calls to some photo development places here in portland and i'm gonna take it in this afternoon and get it scanned and get on my way and so his um so the photo just

came with the bar that's how it ended up in his possession yes and um did he take any did he want any idea or anything from you anything that would show that you are who you say you are and this thing is coming back he was just like no like who would who would go through all of this right and you sat down and you had you had a beer or whatever and you were like hanging out so you weren't like a sketch ball who like took the took the picture and then smurfed out of there

no i i did i had some dinner they do this uh they have this really great like philly cheesesteak sandwich thing that i get them to do with um like an impossible uh hot dog thing sausage style deal and it just tastes so good so i had one of those i sat with my photo i took a picture of it i sent to you i was very excited and now here's i think the next the next phase of this journey that we're all going on together andrew is i was looking up these photo places and i think i found where you need to work when this whole you know podcasting when this podcasting bubble bursts i'm already

excited you know like if i'm worried about my security here in podcasting you're right my backup plan should be in something specifically photograph or film related because i feel like there's going to be a real burgeoning industry of photography going forward i am going to take

it to this place called citizens photo in portland andrew and it looks like your dream if you go to the if you just google citizens photo okay portland and then go to the about tab and then click on who we are and i am just looking at there's actually only one photo of a person greg the owner but i'm reading the bios everyone has worked at this place for 40 plus years they know everything there is to know about cameras about film developing it just seems like a place where you could just putter your life away like it feels energetically like a place that would suit you so well do you know the and vibe wise you're right but do you know and this is the

truth like I know so little especially about gear and um and even like film processing like i think i process film like once or twice like as an intern and i think i had like one class in high school like um i don't know really anything about the lab work of old and even with like even with modern equipment like i'm not really i i couldn't hold my i couldn't hold water in a place like this because i really but you've

got a lifetime to learn you've got the next that is true everyone who works at this place works

there for a minimum of four decades well let's see how much more time do i have left let's see how much i have to drink last night four sausages over the weekend i might not have four decades left in me i'm not sure you might not have four days i might not have four days you're absolutely right um but uh yeah this does seem like an amazing place though this is the type of place where i would like to just like if i could just sit there and drink coffee and listen to them talk that would be fun yeah it seems and and you you nailed it there's a lot of coffee being consumed

to this place i can already tell you it's just the kind of place where they have a coffee pot that's just kind of going all the time they're probably playing either opb oregon public broadcasting or some kind of jazz i and it's just probably like a quiet calm place where just like people are immersed in the world of of traditional film photography and it's also not doesn't look like it's overly hip per se like yeah it looks like these guys got into this game when there was no such thing as digital photography and they've just stayed with it and luckily there has been enough interest in film photography over the years to keep a business like this going um but it's not like some kind of you know again it's not some hipsters who are like starting a an ironic you know film development thing or whatever like because wouldn't that be weird if we got into like traditional film it's like these guys have just been there drinking their coffee listening to their jazz fixing cameras and knowing about film for like almost my entire life

they have a lens called the medical night core that looks like the weirdest lens i've ever seen does have a light built into this i can't even tell what this thing is this is i don't know but

i can't get a job here tomorrow when uh see this is the way that you do podcasting andrew this is how you you really you build the drama so now tomorrow i can report on what kind of jazz they're listening to it citizen's photo when i take my picture in it's literally a lens that was uh

released in response to the demand from the medical industry it's a medical lens i thought that was just some photography term that i was unfamiliar with it must be for taking um you know photos in some sort of medical situation and some sort of lab situation developed i don't even know Oh, I see. The Nikon 120 millimeter medical Nikkor. Yeah, exactly. Yeah. Doesn't that look like there's a light built into it? Wow. Interesting. Okay, good. Well, I know what you're getting for Christmas. Yeah. Okay, good. I'm getting whatever disease one needs this lens to explore.

I was about to launch into another thing that I did yesterday that has me feeling actually the opposite of my excitement around the Andre the Giant photo was tempered by something else I had to do, which made me feel not happy.

Well, let's talk about that. But I do want to say sorry, because I got I got sucked into this website and this lens. But no, that is very exciting. And I do I do. What are you going to do with this photo, though, if you don't mind me asking? So are you going to you have a place in your apartment where you're already looking to hang this thing?

I don't have a spot picked out. i don't i need to find out from the people at the photo place like what how much can you blow something like this up without it kind of looking really grainy and so that's like now we did something with a really amazing photo from carrie's grandparents and it was just a little small photo now it was black and white i don't know if that impacts this but it was one of my very favorite photos ever which was it was her granddad and grandma and her mom and aunt but They were little kids sitting around the table on the farm. And we had that thing blown up to like, I want to say, like six feet by, you know, four feet or something. And it looked great. And it was in the kitchen. So I do sort of have high hopes that it's possible to enlarge a photo like this to a fairly large degree.

Oh, that would be really cool. I'm a sucker for the same size. But no, no, I like that. And even with that old school, like, kind of print, I'll bet you it would work. Even though it's that old school color, I'll bet you that could work. Maybe not quite that big, but that would be exciting.

Yeah, I guess it being Andre the Giant, really what I should do is I should have the picture reduced. It should be the world's smallest photo of the world's largest man.

Wait, I got more questions. Another question that I have is, okay, so your original gesture was going to be, hey, I'll replace the frame. the glass in the frame and he said no i kind of like that which is really cool um have you thought about what your gesture will be now because i feel like when you return it you should still have something and not just like not just like a 50 slipped in there or whatever you know what i mean like i feel like you should do something that would be kind of cool unless i'm just adding more pressure to this exchange here but wouldn't it be nice if you could like like um do something nice when you return the photo for him doing you a solid that actually would be nice if i knew the

guy better i could get him you know a bottle of something if i knew what or what he enjoyed then we use the medical camera lens to take pictures of it exactly but um uh also you know i here's what i here's the gift that i'll offer to nix coney island here in portland everyone go to nix coney island yeah portland a little a little free plug uh it is actually a very cool place and if you uh do find yourself here in portland andrew we should we should go it's very

public access talk uh television program my final question here is did he do anything because it sounds like there is a wall that has so many things hanging on it it must look weird that there's now a space there i'm wondering if other regular customers will be like what the hell happen to the to the andre the giant photo i am worried about that because there is an andre the

giant photo shaped hole uh-huh in their hearts at nix coney island now which is why i'm you know you know me i i just drag my feet on pretty much everything but that's why i'm getting this photo scan this afternoon i'm trying to i'm trying to be as expeditious as possible so that they don't have a missing photo from the experience over there at nix that's funny well good i'm excited man congratulations I'm so glad that Nick is just cool too that's great I know I really was you know because he's he's a tall guy's taller than me and you know he's sort of a fairly imposing dude turns out to be a really nice guy but he's sort of you know he's sitting there he's got his black t-shirt on maybe with an apron he's just been you know back there cooking up a storm he's like I said he's got a big beard and he's smoking a cigarette and I was just like am I gonna am I going to tick this guy off by asking to borrow one of his photos, but things could not have gone better, so it all worked out. kept touch over the years and uh thanks man unless it's a totally different alex meyer in which case i'm sure you've also led an interesting life whatever it is that you've been getting up to but if it's the guy i'm thinking of uh thanks man nice to see your name on the list natalie john is in san rafael california and we also appreciate natalie's support thanks to everybody all of our donors we would not be here without you hello and welcome to top story well andrew i did something just i had to do something yesterday that it's actually not going to be shocking because i'm sure many of our listeners never stopped doing this but i just had to buy a bunch more masks because i'm going to start masking up again because everything i'm reading and hearing about this latest variant uh it's like b25 i think it's called or something is just it's bad news the b stands for bad news no really is that yeah oh that's how science works yes and um i guess like i said a lot of our listeners probably were still masking throughout and i will totally admit that there was a period of time when the mask mandates and regulations were relaxed where i would see people wearing masks you know maybe even outside in the thought or in the car by themselves wearing their mask you know portland is a very masked up place still i would see someone wearing a mask and i would i will admit to feeling a certain level of confusion because like a lot of people i think i bought into this idea that like well you know as zach galifianakis says in baskets as lord's machine says the dog days are over i was just kind of like well we don't have to do that anymore and in fact if you're still doing it it's a little a little mystifying to me well like i'm flying to austin this weekend and i'm just like i gotta mask up again i gotta get some k95s for the flight i've gotta like i started even when i went into nix yesterday i thought and i didn't have a mask on but i the thought really occurred to me should i be masking up now indoors in public spaces not even i mean this is the thing from a selfish standpoint you know that the story on masks originally was we're wearing them to protect each other i am wearing the mask so i don't transmit something to someone else as an act of essentially altruism i am now thinking about masking up as an act of narcissism like i don't want to get this thing i don't want and they one of the things that i was reading was that if you get covid multiple times they there seems to be some data indicating that that could be where some of the more deleterious effects of covid set in if you have sort of multiple um occurrences of it so i it's just i i've i have this sort of growing sense that we are sliding back towards a something going on that's going to be really unfun and i'm trying to stay ahead of it i just never thought i was going to be buying

more masks yeah i remember you had this conversation wow four or five months ago you went back to buying some masks and you were like i never thought i'd be buying masks again i never look at other people and like question why they're wearing a mask i just always assume like it's just because i i didn't i didn't assume that we'd be maybe sliding back towards not even a mandate but a necessity for everybody um but you know whenever i see people wearing masks and i would say i don't know i go to the grocery store maybe it's half and half no it's probably not even half and half it's probably like maybe a quarter of the people wearing masks um usually the people working there may be more likely to be wearing a mask and it's just like i just sort of figure everybody's on their own journey right like some people might be older some people might have some sort of underlying condition some people just are responsible i um haven't been tracking that news as closely as you have so i haven't had that i haven't had um the feeling i have been i feel like i've tested more lately because i mean i know that it has been spreading like somebody i know their mother um uh had it or yeah i guess had it at this point um and i was hanging out with them a couple of weekends ago so we all tested and i was scared in that case i'm like what if i brought that into their life but it became very clear that well first of all i didn't have it and second of all uh something else brought it into their life but um that that's my biggest fear if i find out that i give somebody who's like you know 20 years older than me um covid that would be that would be a bummer my big thing is do they still do antibody tests do i say antibody funny because like it's antigen or is it antigen what is the what is the test that you can take or people were taking it sort of near the beginning of covid oh

To tell if you have. Have you had it in the past? Because as far as I know, like I've been really sick. I mean, when I say really sick, I mean, a significant cold once since this all since, you know, in the past three years or two, two years, two plus years. And that was on the way back from Denver. And I took a test and, you know, it was a cold. And that made sense. It felt exactly like all the colds I've had in my life. But aside from that, like, it seems unlikely that I've. Genevieve has tested positive for it. I don't know if you know this, but I live with her. So I don't know. It just seems so weird to me that I haven't had it at some point. And so I want to take an antigen test just out of weird curiosity. Or antibody. I don't think it's antigen.

Yeah, no, you're right. I think the antigen test is something else. I think that's just the kind of thing that we've been all taking at home. I think that might be called antigen test. But yeah, what you're talking about is to find out if you ever had it at any point in your body. Has your body mobilized to fight COVID because you had it at some point? Because it just seems I mean, I can't think of many people who between all the different variants never didn't ever get it at some point. Yeah. Which is a kind of a it's a hard earned way to get to some sort of herd immunity. Right. But yeah, that's sort of what's happening.

i thought this story was kind of interesting i saw it in the washington post a column actually by somebody named kathy free out walking her dog she found an olympic gold medal on the ground it's the story of this woman named maria carrillo who was um walking out the back door of her office um and this is in anaheim and she noticed uh like a plastic fast food bag had been dumped on the property and so she uh picked up it was a mcdonald's bag but it felt kind of heavy and so she thought maybe there was a rock inside and then she opened it up and what did she see a gold medal that said games of the 32nd olympiad is that what xxx x11 would be yes 32nd olympiad yes 2020 i know god if they threw a v in there big trouble big trouble because like the isn't

the v is five i can do i can do ones x's i can do the i's x's and v's but um when you get outside

isn't there something where like if the one goes in front of the it's actually a minus yeah yeah that's definitely true so yeah iv would be four so it said uh games of the 32nd olympia tokyo 2020 and she's told the post that she first thought was this is so beautiful is this possibly real um and it was real it belonged to a u.s olympian who was the setter on the volleyball team a woman named jordan polter who was on the 2020 u.s women's volleyball team it had been stolen from her car while her car was parked in her garage in an and um and she assumed that it was never going to ever be returned now this is what i thought was really interesting andrew gold medals are not made out of pure gold anymore because i was thinking this has got to be worth like i mean gold is worth a lot right now and like a an olympic gold medal seems like it well it retails for about 800 on the internet they're saying that's how much a gold medal fetches these days basically olympic gold medal is really meaningful to the person who won it but it's not crazy valuable just as an object to be melted down yeah well

this one in particular had an interesting backstory too right this is the one that they were trying to celebrate i guess the the olympics so it's the 20 this is the 2020 olympics right but they were actually played in 2021 do i have that yes and they didn't update the medals

i don't know if they'd already made them or they just wanted it there's they were calling it the 2020 olympics even though they were they happened in 2021 which was kind of an odd quirk as well

Sort of, although that sort of made sense to me. It's just kind of like these are officially the 2020, like it just sort of made sense to me that like the designation of the year in this place, they were postponed, but it was still the Olympics for this year because it's such a formal kind of process that made sense to me. And these these particular metals were made from, like, broken down and recycled material from, like, I think like computer parts and smartphones tech junk. Exactly. As a way of sort of trying to celebrate or shine a focus on the fact that we need to start cleaning up the planet.

Right. The Tokyo Games were billed as the most sustainable games. That was one of their claims to fame, I guess. I mean, everybody was talking about it. Yeah, I couldn't you couldn't go to one barbecue without people talking. Have you heard these are the most sustainable games?

I almost feel like we went too far into that on TBTL, like just weeks and weeks of saying that leading up to it during another lawnmower situation.

Yeah. Yeah, you're right. They use recycled computer parts and smartphones to create the inside of the metal. And then they plated them in gold. They arrested somebody in this, which is also crazy to me. Like, when's the last time someone got arrested for a car prowl?

Yeah. And I might guess is this person probably got arrested for other things as well. And they assume that that this is maybe one of the things that he had stolen and discarded. I got to say one thing about this Washington Post piece who wrote this. Did you already say that Kathy free free. My goodness. So often when I'm reading a piece like this, I leave it with so many more questions than answers. And I'm reading this. I'm like, yeah, but why would it be in a bag in the middle of the parking lot? Yeah, but who would have done this? This article just keeps going on and answering all of my questions to the question of, like, why would this have been discarded? You know, like, let's say somebody did steal this. Why would you then discard it? And it turns out there's a pawn shop nearby. Right. And so the theory is this person probably tried to hock it at the pawn shop and the pawn shop is like, um, no. And this person probably free. I mean, maybe even reaching for the phone. Right. Because, I mean, if you're a pawn shop, I mean, depending on, like, you know, what's – depending on how shady of a business person you are, like, you should probably report something like that coming into your business. So the person who is trying to fence it – is that the right word? If you're selling it, are you fencing it? Yes, that's exactly the right word. The person who's trying to fence it probably just, like, freaked out and drove away or ran away and was just, like, screw this. This is bringing almost like a – almost like something with a curse on it, right? Like, this is bringing more heat on me than I need. Let's just get rid of this thing.

yeah totally like uh the suspect i i love the idea of the suspect standing uh in the pawn shop going you're telling me i didn't win an olympic gold medal in volleyball who are you to right who are you to tell me i didn't win this just because i uh maybe don't look the part or whatever um but also i'm just so happy for uh this uh this olympian uh who got her medal back because like what a bummer and also to the degree that it's like or if someone were to say like what were you doing with having your olympic gold medal in the car it's like she said her friends were always asking to hold it and to see how heavy it was and she liked taking it around and letting people like if i had a friend with an olympic gold medal i would want to see it too and her car was in her garage it wasn't like she she did leave the car unlocked which she said she kind of felt a little embarrassed over but like it wasn't like she was being wildly irresponsible either so you know for the late night jokes about like well what are you doing but you know yeah having this valuable thing like hanging from your rear view mirror i also and then you hang a pine tree from that it would have been a power move for the person who stole this to just start wearing the

metal yeah and then just telling the backstory yeah that would have been something too and i mean this is a small piece of the story but again i liked the story and the woman who found it said that she was just so happy to get it back into the right hands and um she said that like She was born in Mexico, I believe, and came here. And was a was a house cleaner for many years. So she could like kind of, you know, restart her life here in America. And then eventually it says at the top of the story, I can't remember off the top of my head, but I believe she's an accountant now. And it sounds like she might run her own business. And it's like that's sort of one of those Horatio, Horatio Alger, American Dream stories, sort of. And, you know, and her seeing the significance of her story and how it intertwines with this Olympian who has, you know, reached the peak of the pinnacle of her success.

like i don't know it's just it's just a good story all around absolutely this was the quote from um maria carrillo i came to this country from mexico 30 years ago and i cleaned houses to earn enough money to start my own business i know what it's like to work hard to achieve a dream the person who lost this medal deserved to have it back like yeah it's pretty well put you know yep yep yep and

i guess the olympian is like um what they they put it they put an actual value on this of like $900 or something? $812

is allegedly what I guess you can, is the

value of the medal? That's what it says in the article. And the Olympian is giving her, I believe, a check for $1,000 for finding it and returning it. It's just a cool story. Everybody wins.

Well, except for the thief. Yeah, bad day for him. Who, by the way, I believe, I just noticed this. The person who is alleged to have stolen the medal is named Jordan Fernandez. and he stole it from a woman named Jordan.

Oh, I didn't pick up on that either.

This was a Jordan, potentially. A Jordan on Jordan crime. Yeah, if he is guilty, this is some real Jordan on Jordan crime. Sure, yeah, come on. I thought this was a really interesting story as well from India. Basically, officials in India have arrested four people for taking part in what they say was a completely staged cricket match set up to trick russian gamblers into losing their money um this uh was in i think it was in gujarat province and uh basically what what these guys are alleged to have done was went into some like kind of like area in the city where no one went they basically cleared out some space they put down like a some astroturf and then they hired all their buddies to come pretend to be cricket players they filmed it and they put it on youtube in real time they pumped in crowd noise so that it would seem like there was a crowd there and then they got these russian people to bet on it thinking they were watching a real cricket match even though the whole time the umpires or whatever you call them in cricket were telling the the people playing the cricket can you tell i know nothing about the sport of cricket for all of the bbc that i've overheard in my life um i'm uh i'm noel johnson with sport in cricket kuala lumpur bested wanda wiga with seven overs 120 to four like it's just i think there's even like a family guy bit about this like how insane cricket sounds if you have no context for it which i have no context for it anyway apparently these guys were getting paid five dollars i mean it's india so people are often not making very much money but they're getting paid the equivalent of five dollars to show up and pretend to be these cricket players but then do stuff so that the score would go in a certain direction or certain things would happen so that the people tricking the russian bettors would be able to make money off of them now i've watched video of this and i just said that i don't know anything about cricket but if you told me this is a professional cricket league i would be like man these guys suck at cricket like even to the untrained eye this did not look like i mean these are just random kind of out of work dudes who are big it'd be like if if they said okay we're gonna tell people it's the nba luke go find five random friends not even basketball players necessarily we're gonna put you in a uniform and then we're gonna try to get russians to bet on it thinking you're the lakers like it was not a convincing fake to me i am a

little distracted here because i am trying to figure out have you ever seen the movie the sting yes of course isn't this don't they do this isn't this a huge part of the scam and the sting only it's horse racing and they fake yes they set up like a fake horse racing like parlor or something

this bar they build for the sting okay so yeah this is sort of a version of that it's just surprising to me that it worked to any degree because looking at it i was like these these guys do not look like they're professional cricketeers uh-huh cricket players also i just feel like no offense but i've never heard a less i've never felt less empathy than i feel for someone called russian sports better like is there a group of people who you feel less bad for in any scenario like you got these guys that are in india and they're out of work and obviously uh it's well documented that just uh economic uh sort of the poverty that many people suffer in india is just is just absolutely awful these guys getting paid five bucks to fake like they're doing cricket like why are they being arrested arrest the russian better yeah like i am team uh let me see what were they called um i am pro gondhinagar challengers and chennai fighters i am with

Oh, I love it all happening. My friend, I marched myself down or I guess in this case up to my local post office recently. Just yesterday I did that and I did it. I got us a TBTL P.O. box. Now, I was confused about something. Whenever you see a commercial or anything on, you know, and it says, you know, send it to a P.O. box, you don't usually have a whole address, right? It's just like P.O. box, number, number, number, Seattle, Washington, and the zip code. And when I was purchasing this P.O. box from the clerk at the post office By the way, long line at the post office And they are hiring and I spent a great deal of time Wondering if I have what it takes to be a postal clerk I don't think I'm in physical condition to be a postal carrier But do you think that I could work like the mailroom Like the mother of all mailrooms at the U.S. Postal Service? Do I think you could get the job or do I think you would enjoy it? Do you think I could get the job? Do you think I could do the job? Do you think I could keep up with it? Oh, you could absolutely do the job. You think so? I think you should do the job. It's a high-pressure job.

It's probably your last day at TBTL. Wow. It's funny how. I think they would hire you, and I think you would love it because you love organizing.

need to put the full address but if you're dropping it in the traditional mailbox then the po box will

be sufficient exactly so if you are somebody who's doing that and again i want to make clear we didn't get this p.o box begging you guys to send us stuff you already support the show like you know you don't have to send us gifts or whatever but for those of you who do want to drop us an old-fashioned letter or during the holidays you want to send a card to tbtl maybe that and i would love it maybe luke if we could you know share more stuff on the uh on the show somebody suggested we do a brad pitt style what's in the box i was going to say that's that's a dark that's a pretty natural fit there it is dark but um yeah that could be a segment that we do um if you do want to do that the full address is uh it's the um post office at 929 north 145th street that's 929 North 145th Street, Seattle, Washington, 98133, P.O. But I am – it delights me how delighted you are about this. I've never had a P.O. box before. It makes you – I know, and I can tell – again, I'm not saying this to be, like, a little bit like you're being too excited about it. I did not realize the joy dough that this was going to provide you. It's making you so happy, and I love that for us.

I mean, you used to work out – you used to do the podcast out of a post office and a very – you know, a post office with a lot of character and old brick building and in your favorite port side town.

So, you know, maybe I believe I had a P.O. box there for that would make sense. I believe I never checked. So I'm so good. I'm being serious, Andrew. I love that you're you're hyped about this because it also means you will actually go check the P.O. box. I think there are probably still things that people sent us that are somewhere in the bowels of either the Port Townsend post office or other places. Like I had one when I lived down in Mount Baker. I had one down at the local place there as well. I don't know if I checked that one very frequently. So this is a much better system because a much more responsible person is now in charge of checking the mail.

Yeah, I think maybe I'll like maybe go once a week and check it out. And if we do end up getting a lot of stuff, and again, I didn't set this up to put more onus on the listeners to send us stuff. And trust me, I'm not going to be doing any research. I'm just casually listening to this podcast and occasionally casually watching Batman versus TMNT movies.

Yeah, I was thinking, could I tell you any of the characteristics of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? I mean, I could name them because obviously they're named after sort of Renaissance characters. But as far as who was the, like, who's the cut up, who's the, you know, brainy one, like, I have totally forgotten any of that. And I was a very, I was a daily watcher of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles TV show. Yeah, the cartoon. I loved that cartoon.

Yeah, yeah.

Be curious to see if that cartoon holds up. But I couldn't tell you anything about, like, what's Donatello's whole deal?

Right, which I think I kind of know that now. And the funny thing is, is this is the big problem. Well, we should just wrap up. That's the big problem for Scott is he's watched the movies that came out like in the 90s and then, you know, actually even into the 2000s now with that franchise. But it wasn't until this cartoon, and I feel the same way. It wasn't until this cartoon that I watched yesterday that was produced by Warner Brothers. I think nerds know that like the whole Batman universe, the DC.

batman universe with harley quinn and the joker and all that there's a pretty stylized tradition of warner brothers releasing these pretty decent um series and movies and and whatnot which i'm you know somewhat familiar with and so this one was a teenage mutant ninja turtle crossover based on a comic book and i gotta say for as in some ways uh childish it was it was the first one that i was like okay and ackerman said the same thing now i can tell the difference between these characters like it's actually starting to form because it just goes to show you what good writing can do so anyway that's where I am in my journey you want to test your knowledge and now I want to test my knowledge but I also you know but you got it you got to make it tough like right now I do this is what I was thinking about the whole cartoon Raphael has a scar over his eye and I was like why does he have a scar over his eye and I looked it up and there's I guess traditionally he does so I already I'm at that level so I'm at that level right now I could get that one right so it has to be a little bit more difficult than that all right send us your teenage mutant ninja turtle related quizzes for the summer games please all right what's the name of the bad guy i can name the bad guy uh i can name the bad guy do you want to say it on krang right oh that's interesting there's well i was gonna say shredder uh oh yeah no no you're right you're right but krang is also yeah he's a really bad guy but i don't know much brain right that's like lives in a tummy i believe oh okay kind of like quado i think in uh is it in Juado, that's in Total Recall?
