TBTL Love it or hate it it appears to be another irreversible step along mankind's journey toward God only knows what. Psycho, screwy, and totally unbalanced. Laser pointers? You know what I'd like to do? I'd like to take my laser car and drive it off of a laser clip. Do you believe that? I do if you do.

00:01:16 - 00:01:26 | Speaker 3:

But it's absurd. What would happen if you went out on stage and you didn't set off the fireworks and you didn't break up the guitar and you didn't have the smoke and the fire and the blood and all that and you just came out and did

00:01:26 - 00:01:35 | Speaker 4:

your thing well i've got to run i can hear the blender crying coming baby all right hello good

00:01:35 - 00:01:48 | Speaker 2:

broadcast center right here in portland oregon it's nice to be back home doing the show from my usual digs i was in los angeles for a lot of last week it is going to be warm though again here in portland it's going to be very hot going to be very uncomfortable for everybody may have some uh some summer rains coming through later this week but today it's going to get up to the like mid 90s again it's gonna be toasty um happy dave matthews band tour bus day to all who celebrate this of course on this day in history how many years ago was it many years ago i think this is maybe the let's see i'm googling this you think i would have this prepared dave matthews band bus it was august the 8th 2004 so about 18 years ago i think dave matthews band bus was driving in chicago and released an estimated 800 pounds of sewage by the way what is the dave matthews band eating that they had 800 pounds of sewage on this bus they were driving over a bridge i think it was the kinsey street bridge in chicago and if you've been to chicago you've probably been on this bridge because it spans the chicago river and if you've ever taken one of those architecture tours that are on those boats you know exactly how this could happen they released 800 pounds of sewage onto a boat that had an open like top deck that was full of tourists, just trying to enjoy the Chicago architecture. So happy 18th anniversary, or 18th birthday maybe, of Dave Matthews' band Bus Poop Diddy Whoop Scoop Day. This is episode 3744 in a collector's series. Let the fun begin. We've got a lot to talk about on this Monday. A French scientist released a photo, one of those, like, you know, we're seeing all these James Webb telescope photos. he released a photo of Proxima Centauri and people were loving it on the internet, it was beautiful this kind of like I don't know, it's like sort of this perfect red circle with these white almost sort of cloudy bits in the middle and well... Those scientists better check their hypotenuses, dude. He's now admitted it was in fact not a photograph from space but something else which we'll tell you about coming up. Oh, and my mother I'll say, I'll say, what's up, dog? Has started a Succession-esque competition amongst her children. I've also never watched the show Succession, so I'm just going off of the broad strokes. I think it's about a very competitive family of strivers. Anyway, we'll tell you what's going on with that. And we'll talk to this guy, the longest running co-bro of the show,

00:04:53 - 00:04:57 | Speaker 2:

maybe best known for his depictions of the tall ships. He is a dear friend and also...

00:04:57 - 00:04:58 | Speaker 1:

My good time boy.

00:04:58 - 00:04:59 | Speaker 2:

He's Andrew Walsh.

00:05:00 - 00:05:04 | Speaker 1:

Joining me right now. Hello. Hey, Luke. Welcome back to work. It's a Monday.

00:05:05 - 00:05:06 | Speaker 2:

I'm ready for it.

00:05:06 - 00:06:30 | Speaker 1:

I have a quick message, if you don't mind. I know we're talking to literally tens of listeners here, but if I could just narrow the focus for a moment and say to the individual whom I met outside of T-Mobile Park after the ball game on Saturday night, I'm sorry I wasn't cooler or more gracious when you said hello to me. I sort of gave a high-five, and I said something. I don't even remember exactly what I said. I met a listener. You know, throngs of people are streaming out of the stadium, and I'm with my boy, Durs, and then somebody says, Andrew. I'm a good-time boy. Yeah, and somebody says, hey, Andrew. And then they said, I listened to your blog, and it made me laugh. And I high-fived, but I think I said something nonsensical, like, me too. Or I think I said, I do too. which, first of all, isn't a good response, and also it's a lie. I don't listen to this podcast. Come on, I got better things to do. So, anyway, I felt like that was not, like, I probably could have stopped and said hello, or at the very least had a more pithy response that made some sort of semblance of sense. So, my apologies for that. That was kind of living in my head all day yesterday that I wasn't Mr. Cool in the moment. You never got the listener's name, either. You just saw them. Just kept moving, Luke. Too cool, too famous. You must have looked cool to Durz, though. um yeah yeah maybe he didn't seem um yeah maybe i'm not sure he didn't really remark on the

00:06:30 - 00:08:08 | Speaker 2:

situation sometimes those interactions whether they're with listeners or just with random people certainly can be a little bit fraught i was flying home from la and the guy sitting next to me had a service dog with him and it was a yellow lab and i was trying to indicate to him that i am going to be cool with this lab being on the flight because i also used to have a yellow lab rudy of course and so as he's getting situated he sits down and the dog is kind of you know sort of getting situated at his feet i just show him the picture on my phone because the home screen of my phone is still rudy and i just show him the phone and then he just goes smart that's like what i said the listener just like right exactly words right exactly and i was like and i just spent about 40 minutes on the flight thinking what did that mean does he think like what and i i think probably he was just doing that thing where you just say a word and it's not probably the word you mean yeah uh but it just comes out and then but then i was really in my head because i was like i didn't give him the full story i didn't want to go i used to have a dog but then i got divorced and then it seem like a better situation because the dog the house that my ex-wife got uh has a lot of uh like you know yard to run around i didn't want to give him the whole story so i just flashed him the picture of the phone but then i thought does he like did he get that i'm saying i'm basically trying to say i'm a yellow lab owner to him yeah like did he understand that was what i was trying to convey with just showing him a picture on my phone i mean i love the fact that there might have

00:08:08 - 00:08:37 | Speaker 1:

been a notification on your phone or something in that moment he thought you were showing him the notification like maybe it said you know like maybe you had an appointment dems bring kristin cinema in line to pass pass climate pack or what about like reminder you have a dentist appointment on wednesday and he's like yeah good oral health that's smart maybe that's what he was smart that your phone tells you when you have a proctology yeah right exactly you know uh i always tell my 45 year olds you gotta uh you gotta stay you gotta get back yeah gotta get back in there gotta talk

00:08:37 - 00:08:49 | Speaker 2:

to that guy now that i'm a 46 year old and i haven't been back but anyway yeah it's just like weird when you have one of those moments either you're the person saying the word or you're the person even hearing the word and then you just kind of like spend a lot of time ruminating on it

00:08:49 - 00:09:13 | Speaker 1:

yeah yep yep i wish i was better in that moment i mean i couldn't stop for a long time anyway again huge crowd of people we're all moving to the train like whatever but i just what the words that came out of my mouth i don't think made a lot of sense so and it seemed like the whoever i talked to that person was clearly cooler than me i liked his i liked what he said i listened to your blog and i had i had nothing to return you know what's funny is i was for some reason this morning

00:09:13 - 00:09:29 | Speaker 2:

looking for some gary bucey tape and i could i actually did not find the piece of tape i was looking for but there i stumbled upon this little clip it's gary bucey talking to a blogger from comedy central do you want to hear this really fast it's just yes i write the comedy central

00:09:29 - 00:09:36 | Speaker 4:

blog thank you what is that it's a it's a website for comedy central okay what does it do what does

00:09:36 - 00:09:59 | Speaker 3:

the website do uh it's a blog yeah it might be no it is i'm from texas a blog is a bad hair do oh and if you have a comparable you're riding around with hair like that you're going to be mr blog but i love it it's okay with me because the freedom of hair is the freedom of speech and the freedom of speech is the reason you're able to buy this camera and make fun of me true

00:10:00 - 00:10:03 | Speaker 1:

That got a little more aggressive at the end than I remember

00:10:03 - 00:10:10 | Speaker 2:

Yeah, he feels like that guy was making fun of him Which I doubt that guy was actually making fun of him That voice, the voice of the blogger sounds familiar

00:10:10 - 00:11:41 | Speaker 1:

Who knows, that could be, you know Somebody who's gone on to Either be in front of the camera or behind the camera And do big things But I want to talk to you, Andrew About this situation with my mother That I thought I thought was going to be a passing fancy for her But No, it's back again it is her family photo contest that she has personally started so like like last month i guess it would have been probably july because you know we have this hawk squad text chain and oh by the way happy birthday today happy sweet 16 to my incredibly smart brilliant talented niece maddie 16 16 are you kidding me happy birthday maddie um but uh because today was maddie's birthday we were sending around birthday well wishes on the hawk squad and addie sent a picture of her and maddie a really cute picture of both of them and then uh because that's another thing we kind of do traditionally now is we'll try to find a picture on our phone of the person whose birthday is being celebrated and we'll send it along anyway addie sent this really cute picture the two of them and then my mom just comes in with let's see let me get back to the relevant part of this Addie and birthday girl Maddie won for my August wallpaper on my home screen contest congrats granddaughters

00:11:41 - 00:11:42 | Speaker 2:

so like

00:11:42 - 00:12:07 | Speaker 1:

last month my mom just declared that she's going to pick a favorite photo of one of her grandkids or kids and then that person will win the honor of being the home screen on my mom's phone she did it last month and i thought there's no way she's going to remember to try to do this in august but no she is absolutely going for it and what i did last time this came around was i just included a picture of andre the giant and

00:12:07 - 00:12:14 | Speaker 2:

blondie oh yeah you know as my submission did you mention this and and now uh so this time i just

00:12:14 - 00:12:56 | Speaker 1:

sent a picture of andre the giant on an atv taken on someone's farm and just said this is my submission for the september contest um because as long as my mom is trying to divide her children by getting them and then by the way addy wrote uh lizzo voice about damn time being excited that she was selected yeah right she's loving this this cred within the family this star turn for her and maddie of getting to be grandma's home screen for the month but like only my mother only my mother would invent a contest as a way of honoring being like congratulations it's so amazing you won the contest that i just made up which ultimately means i'm awesome it's really

00:12:56 - 00:13:13 | Speaker 2:

how i'm reading this contest and i'm like i'm not a blood relative so i am i would not be considered for this at all i assume or well do you have any pictures of andre the giant i have a picture of me and andre the giant walking across a portland street the year was about 1983 can't remember the

00:13:13 - 00:13:50 | Speaker 1:

photographer but yeah i'll submit that uh my mom was like no offense to our little missy i think that's what they now call violet my niece my brother sam's daughter oh yeah no offense to our little missy by the way little missy does not have a phone yet little missy is like a year old and yeah it's not even on this chain but this month we'll celebrate my two oldest granddaughters Last month was my two oldest daughters So she's really thinking hard on this And she's starting to developing I think some kind of a theme and format For the whole thing But obviously this is going to become Quite the competition within our family

00:13:50 - 00:13:54 | Speaker 2:

Who is going to take over the family business That was the bigger question I think

00:13:54 - 00:13:59 | Speaker 1:

Did I get any of the Succession part right? Is this what they do on Succession? This is exactly what they do

00:13:59 - 00:14:03 | Speaker 2:

It's about a family photo contest Did you know that or did you not know that?

00:14:03 - 00:14:21 | Speaker 1:

wouldn't that be so great if instead of you know being the murdoch family or whatever it was just a pretty normal kind of middle maybe lower middle class family and the entire thing was about the dad brian cox what's his name on the show is it lachlan um what is his name on the

00:14:21 - 00:14:25 | Speaker 2:

show i'm blanking on it off the top of my head there's no way it's lachlan because lachlan is

00:14:25 - 00:14:46 | Speaker 1:

one of rupert murdoch's kids actual names i think i've just logan logan logan logan logan right of course but like um wouldn't it be great if it was just logan roy in that brian cox mcdonald's voice scrolling through his phone and selecting a picture a picture uh of who's going to or he

00:14:46 - 00:14:59 | Speaker 2:

sees he sees your picture of andre the giant and sorry for the swears but this is my imitation of logan roy he sees the picture of andre the giant he says fuck off this which is my imitation of of logan royce that's not bad thank you well

00:15:00 - 00:15:01 | Speaker 1:

You haven't seen the show, but I'll take it.

00:15:02 - 00:15:12 | Speaker 2:

Describe a Big Mac. I wanted to find that. I wish I would have had that succession theme that Demi Adigi eBay does. It would be the perfect audio for this.

00:15:12 - 00:15:25 | Speaker 1:

Oh, he sings over top of it. Boy, I forgot that that wasn't Paul F. Tompkins. Both of those guys sing over top of things and add lyrics where there aren't them, right? Yeah. Where there aren't them. Yes. That's the funniest thing I've ever said on the show, and it was just dumb.

00:15:26 - 00:15:36 | Speaker 2:

Here we go. This is Demi Adigi Ebay's Once the video is done The ad I should say Before the video Here we go with Demi Adigi Ebay Singing Succession

00:15:36 - 00:16:29 | Speaker 3:

All the rich white folk are going to argue And the new ever's best is going to win a kiss from daddy All the rich white folk are going to argue And the new ever's best is going to win a kiss from daddy We'll get a kiss all the rich white folk are going to argue but only one will triumph and win the prize of daddy's love daddy kiss daddy kiss daddy roy kiss who will daddy this is the extended version I'm learning the names

00:16:29 - 00:16:33 | Speaker 1:

of the kids on Succession I've never heard this long version

00:16:43 - 00:16:55 | Speaker 2:

Rejected lyrics to HBO's Succession Theme by Demi Adichiebe.

00:16:56 - 00:17:10 | Speaker 1:

Not unlike you. I heard that before I ever saw the TV show, and then watching the TV show was really a way of me filling in the gaps of that song. I consider the TV show to be a prequel to that song, in fact. That's the way I approached it.

00:17:10 - 00:17:39 | Speaker 2:

uh this is completely out of the blue but i'm just thinking about it for some reason i saw a thing on probably twitter this morning or maybe tiktok which was a deleted scene from star wars from return of the jedi where um here we go yes we've done it we've derailed the week 17 minutes and 28 seconds in um where uh han solo is thanking luke for getting him out of that

00:17:39 - 00:17:45 | Speaker 1:

cryo freeze okay yeah it's a deleted it's a legit it's a deleted scene it was never in the movie

00:17:45 - 00:18:12 | Speaker 2:

but it's but Han is like thanking Luke for saving him and uh and and Luke says oh don't even think about it and then Han says I'm thinking I owe you one and they're like standing like a windswept like tarmac of some kind of space airport okay um and then I was wondering I wonder why they cut that scene out I wonder what they thought you know why they didn't think that we wanted to see that Han Solo appreciated Luke Skywalker going to Jabba's lair or whatever it's called and getting him out of that frozen thing.

00:18:13 - 00:18:29 | Speaker 1:

Yeah, because it seems like that's a pretty important sort of moment in the evolution of their relationship from him being like... Right, it would make me like Han Solo more if I knew that he was appreciative. I don't know. I thought when you were doing all of that, I thought that you were building up for a spoof too. I thought this was maybe a fake deleted scene from the folks on TikTok.

00:18:30 - 00:19:59 | Speaker 2:

Nope, nope. That's just what it sounds like when I try to host the show. That's just me. and i feel good this morning by the way i had a relaxing weekend i swam in the willamette river a little bit things are good for me right now and yet this is still any and another thing andrew i have figured out what my optimal desk height is oh good what is it give it to me in centimeters no millimeters give it to me in kilometers well let's see i'm about six foot six one and it's about about my waist so i'm going to say it's about four feet okay four feet ish and for some reason i think because when i'm doing live wire uh when we're recording certain elements i'm on zoom with all of them and so whenever i'm being you know i'm filming myself if you will or on camera i want the desk because i have this desk that's a sit stand desk it's from fully a fine company here in portland oregon and it's got one of those motors on it so i can raise and lower it and when i'm on camera i i would like the the the computer that's filming me to be as high as possible right like as elevated as possible i never want to be looking down onto the laptop if you've ever accidentally taken a picture of yourself on your phone that you didn't realize you were taking yeah it is absolutely horrifying yeah like even if you don't take the photo just you look at in the camera for a second right exactly if you've asked if you've accidentally switched the camera on in some way you're just like ah it's like it's horrifying what most of us look like

00:20:00 - 00:20:36 | Speaker 1:

when we don't realize that we're and particularly from down below so what i realized is for months i've had this desk way too high because i've had it up at like i'm looking at my co-workers at livewire height which is higher than is like comfortable for me but it maybe reduces maybe gets me down to only one extra chin and so uh i think it i don't know maybe it might have even been bubble somebody bumped the up down thing on this desk and i came in and it was like at a lower level and i'm feeling great today this is my optimal height well that's good and so what about

00:20:36 - 00:20:56 | Speaker 2:

when you turn the camera back on or can you get a drone camera or something that's no good because you i've said that to you before but you said no it's very specific because you go to and i'm the same way like you go too hot you go too low and there's too much chin you go too high and there's not enough hair right like it's got well sure although i'd be staring up i would be staring

00:20:56 - 00:22:08 | Speaker 1:

oh i see like the characters in the movie nope okay okay looking up at the you have not seen that yet have you i haven't it's getting rave reviews i feel very connected to that film i might have talked about this on the show or maybe it was off air but i was visiting our friend hollywood power player when rosenfeld at the monkey paw studios um and they had this huge model of the town where they were going to be filming the film and like a scale model and i was really with like protractors and measuring divided like like a tape measure and stuff and i was totally shocked because i thought i was under the impression that like in this day and age all like you make a movie like that and it's just all computerized but win was explaining to me that if you don't actually figure out the angles and a lot of the geometry of things that's when the stuff looks out of proportion or hokey on screen so i knew long before most of you normals that this was a movie about an alien invasion of a western town and therefore i've been walking around with this smug secret like i'm on the inside track with this film and yet i have not actually sat down to watch the film yet but i will be doing so this is a true story and i know that

00:22:08 - 00:23:03 | Speaker 2:

i've said this before on the show and it sounds like i'm just trying to be cute but i swear to god this is one of those movies where i was watching the trailer and like it just starts it starts off charmingly and cute and really well shot and then really stunningly shot with those with those windsock dancers in the in the prairie or the plane area um and it's just so captivating you're like what am i watching i'm definitely gonna see this and then it's like scary scary scary and i'm like god damn it why couldn't it have just been a nice movie because it just looks like it's i mean everything about it because that's the thing about his eye right like he's totally got the kind and i've i do love jordan peele's movies i've yeah i mean i think i've seen them all but like i just i honestly just wish that sometimes they would just be about nice things like that somebody make your eye that that entire like vision that he has but not be scary

00:23:03 - 00:23:13 | Speaker 1:

is somebody doing that right now and by that i mean editing films to take out like take a scary movie make it not scary so that Andrew can enjoy it yeah that would be nice

00:23:13 - 00:23:29 | Speaker 2:

they used to do that there were Christian organizations I believe growing up that would have in fact maybe you know a little bit about this did you ever have any access to like some sort of a rental or like a library VHS thing where the the cassettes were edited to take out

00:23:29 - 00:23:51 | Speaker 1:

anything no I would have loved that I mean I wouldn't have loved I would have wanted to watch the real thing but I would have accepted an edited version of I said we weren't going to talk about this today on the show because I don't want to sound overly negative about people's faith or the play Hamilton, but it's kind of relevant to what you're talking about.

00:23:51 - 00:23:57 | Speaker 2:

What do you think is a more hot-button issue for you and I to talk about, religion or our thoughts on Hamilton? Easily Hamilton.

00:23:58 - 00:24:27 | Speaker 1:

I don't think it's even a little bit close. This is this strange story out of Texas where this church decided to put on their production of Hamilton, but they also decided to change the plot so that Hamilton and—let me see if I can get to the actual exact details—Alexander Hamilton and Eliza Schuyler Hamilton talk about how Jesus saved them.

00:24:27 - 00:24:29 | Speaker 2:

Now, that's not in the original?

00:24:29 - 00:26:21 | Speaker 1:

I do not believe that is in the Lin-Manuel Miranda version. And then later, the pastor gave a sermon. This is after their production of Hamilton, where he equated being gay to alcohol and drug addiction. So suffice it to say, this has not gone over great with the creators of Hamilton. Really? Who are saying that this is like copyright infringement. The church is saying that they actually jumped through the hoops. And I'm sure there's some process by which you can... you know secure the rights to stage Hamilton at your local theater or something you know I mean I don't know what the rules on that are but the church is claiming that they actually went through the proper procedure I would imagine that there's got to be something in the legalese that says you can't make Hamilton accept Jesus at the end yeah right and again and then and then link it to anti-gay propaganda right well the thing is the guy was just I mean I actually watched the clip from the pastor and it seems like he was improvising like i don't think he was talking about people struggling with things and then he lists some things that we all agree people struggle with like drug and alcohol addiction and then he adds being gay to the list which we don't agree is a struggle no um or represents someone struggling and so that in its proximity to this kind of christian uh tized version of hamilton is getting them some um some criticism And I think that they've now pulled down all the videos and are I mean, I feel a little bad for the kids only because like I was in a many a church play. I mean, nothing on this scale, but like I would have just been psyched if we were putting on like what seemed like a cool, relevant play at my church. Right. Yeah. I mean, 15 year olds were just psyched to get cast. And now it's like they're part of this debacle. You know, I'm looking for evidence.

00:26:21 - 00:26:54 | Speaker 2:

And I'm trying to think, I feel like, I mean, this could be one of those things where I just heard about it, like, in the late 80s when I was a kid or something, and I took it to be true, but it does seem like something that Christians would do, right? Like, I feel like we had heard of places, like, you know, if you wanted, you know, Luke, you wanted to go see Brain Donors, but as we know, there's a lot of, you know, John Turturro gets into some randy business in that movie. Maybe there's a clean edit of Brain Donors, and you can go to a special store in your community and rent it there.

00:26:55 - 00:27:59 | Speaker 1:

Yeah, I don't remember ever seeing that. What we would do is we would go to, like, Evangel Books and Music, and then we would just rent or—yeah, we wouldn't really buy, but we would rent just overtly Christian products. You know what I mean? Like, there was this musical that I've talked about on the show called High Tops that we loved. it was sort of high school the musical with lower production value and before they'd ever created high school the musical but about these angels that go down to a high school and these angels take on different kind of iconic or archetypal forms so one is the nerd one is the jock one is the you know and they've basically got to like bring these kids to christ or whatever so like that wasn't something that was like you know made for secular audience and then converted for our audience most of the stuff that i was watching was made for a christian audience also the comedy of mike warnke which uh we're going to talk about a scientist lying later on in the show but that was the guy who claimed that he had been a high priest in the satanic church and that all turned

00:27:59 - 00:30:00 | Speaker 2:

out to be made up as well i didn't i don't think i i don't think i know any of that story i was listening to some i was listening to a remarkable amount of christian and conservative radio on saturday and i was i was i spent friday night uh with a bunch of friends up at my friend's cabin in um bosworth right and then i drove back by myself now that's not that long of a drive but i had like kind of stops to make on the way and so i found myself in the car for maybe like an i don't know maybe an hour all told from bosworth back home with some stops or whatever and you You know, I've usually got my radio set to the AM dial because I'm, you know, young. And usually I have my three stations, right? It's usually I'll ping pong between Kixi radio. Obviously, music is cool now as it was then. 710 ESPN. Unless they start playing that Billy Joel racket. Right. Then you've got to change. Just because it sounds like it's from the 50s doesn't mean it was for the longest time, my ass. anyway and then I'll listen to is that a show title for the longest time my ass we already put a fake swear I think in last Thursday's show anyway and then I'll listen to Como sometimes but then when you're in a different community and the radio stations you know are starting to fade you find yourself just like scanning for what you can find and I got I found a really cool like station I mean really cool by my standards so like just so not cool on the way back when I was up in like in the Lake Stevens area. I think it was an Everett station that was like on a.m. but just like playing a bunch of kind of soft hits from like the 70s and 80s and somehow it was just like really working for me at 10 a.m. on a Saturday. And then as I lost that station and I'm kind of bopping around, I found myself on like whatever the, I mean, I'm talking like real conservative radio, like whatever the Hannity station is in Seattle. I wasn't listening to Hannity. I just heard one of his absolutely toxic, hateful

00:30:00 - 00:32:34 | Speaker 1:

promos. I'm guessing that would be 570 KVI, presumably, right? Yeah, maybe it's KVI. I'm not sure. Those guys kind of move around a lot. Yeah. I feel like it wasn't though, Luke. It was another conservative station. There's a chance that he might be on a different local station now. But anyway, I'm not certain of that. But the point is, what was on though was something like Our American Stories or something, which I was wondering if it was sort of like a more like kind of a This American Life for more conservative am radio listeners it's like some story of a golfer just sort of like i think it was maybe like somebody was interviewing him but then they took out the interviewer but it wasn't like it wasn't npr style maybe it had been written out but it's just like people telling stories there's one story about how dewey didn't take truman's like um uh chances of winning the white house seriously enough and it was talking about some sort of like barnstorming that truman did that won even uh republicans over it was like whatever this show was it was just like americana stories but it wasn't necessarily at all like always from the perspective of the republicans win or anything it's just like it probably just appeals to whatever this audience is on saturdays and i was really enjoying that and then i ended up on some christian station that wasn't like sometimes i'll if i'm just flipping and i want to hear talk radio and i hear some sermon i'll actually listen to it for a little bit just because i like talk radio but then by the way you were on 1090 the patriot yes yes that's what i was on 1090 the patriot i mean just the fact that it was called the patriot and then i was in this conservative or this christian station but it's not like um the usual like kind of fire and brimstone somebody up at a podium giving their sermon it was like somebody just telling the story of it was going to be the beginning of a three-part series on the archangels and that they were starting with rafael the archangel oh wow and i was like i didn't even know there was a rafael i didn't either i know donatello does the machines exactly let's see i know that one of them is cool but rude and one of them is a party dude but um and then splinters are radical rat right so anyway i'm just gonna and that i like like it was like i don't believe in any of it but it was like just somebody telling the story and the origin story of an archangel named Raphael like I'll I'll listen to that I'll give that a day in court as Kamara Kev would say um and so yeah I found myself listening to some things this weekend that I normally wouldn't did you find it actually enjoyable or more from a kind

00:32:34 - 00:32:44 | Speaker 2:

of art um sort of like an anthropological standpoint interesting no the well um no I I found it kind

00:32:44 - 00:32:57 | Speaker 1:

of interesting it was better than anything else that was on at the moment like I didn't want to listen to music they haven't figured out a way yet to have like talk radio on demand like that you could like save shows on your phone and then play with I can't we're gonna be in real trouble when they get that

00:32:57 - 00:32:59 | Speaker 2:

technology worked out I mean it is nuts

00:32:59 - 00:33:19 | Speaker 1:

that I work in podcasting and I have for as long as I have and I just reject podcasts so I mean listen I listen to a lot of podcasts in certain scenarios but when I'm driving in the car that isn't the time for me to listen to comedy bang bang it's the time for me to like scroll through the am radio and just stop on something that sounds interesting for a little bit yeah i

00:33:19 - 00:34:04 | Speaker 2:

mean i've said this endlessly on the show but i still feel like i mean the irony is that there are many people right now in their car listening to us say this but for me that's not true you know i was going to say the issue is that the radio is one button and my podcast stuff is maybe two buttons or three buttons like i've got to go into whatever pod catcher i'm using and then find the show and then find the latest ups episode whatever sometimes it's why i just default to listening to oregon public broadcasting when i'm driving a lot of the time although i do i do listen to podcasts um in my car more than i used to but for the people who are holdouts like you and i have listening to still a lot of terrestrial radio it really is because i just don't want to click three things i just want to click one thing for me it's not about the click so much as the

00:34:04 - 00:34:25 | Speaker 1:

decision making like i don't want to make the decision i'm a flipper you know what i mean like if i can just kind of keep and i'm sure there are times if i'm by myself where what i've listened to for the past 15 minutes is just me constantly flipping through the am radio dial just like hearing like suddenly you realize wait a second i've just been doing this over and over and over and i've never landed on anything and you got to move on but right it's like you get to that like

00:34:25 - 00:34:37 | Speaker 2:

there's something in russian yeah way up in the 1400s and then you it's come back to it twice and you're like okay now we're just it's uh it's like fuzzy and it's someone speaking in russian and

00:34:37 - 00:34:59 | Speaker 1:

You're like, exactly, exactly. Like when I'm done with when I'm done with the show here, I will probably go upstairs and make myself some lunch. And like, I don't want to stand in the kitchen and open up my phone and look at all the options. It's kind of like sitting down to watch Netflix as opposed to just like turning on the TV and flipping. Right. Like it's like, OK, now I'm looking at my phone. I have all these options. Am I in the mood for comedy? I mean, what am I in the mood to listen to?

00:35:00 - 00:35:46 | Speaker 3:

from the beginning right and like it's just like no i'm just going to turn on the radio and i'm going to listen to bump and stacy like mid sentence talking about something that happened at the seahawks training camp that i couldn't give two shits about i do not care about football training camp by the way and i listen to a lot of sports radio you don't care about really care quarterback contest between drew lock and geno smith i do actually find that sort of interesting i want to know kind of what ends up happening but like i i just think that like listening to people at training camp talk about what they saw in training camp is kind of you maybe it's just my own knowledge or or um missing knowledge on the details of football but it's like i just don't care but i still will listen to it because god damn it's better than choosing something else

00:35:46 - 00:35:54 | Speaker 4:

andrew i just realized something because football's back baby and i was googling who is the hard

00:35:54 - 00:36:07 | Speaker 3:

knocks team you know i love that oh i know yeah knocks dan the man campbell i think that's why we're seeing more tape come out from it right i haven't watched any yet but yeah i don't even know if it's has it come out yet actually it might take i don't know either i'm but there's

00:36:07 - 00:36:13 | Speaker 2:

no whining in football but every august football comes to wine country

00:36:13 - 00:36:29 | Speaker 4:

that's liev right am i right about that's liev yeah junk he's unjunking your sleep yeah playing with words as it relates to football players. Let's see what this one is. Hard Knocks Bit Teeth MP3. What do you think this one is?

00:36:35 - 00:36:37 | Speaker 1:

Everybody ain't so free.

00:36:38 - 00:36:46 | Speaker 2:

What in the hell? Just because he surrendered the reins doesn't mean Jonathan Abram doesn't still have the bit between his teeth.

00:36:48 - 00:36:49 | Speaker 4:

The writing is so

00:36:49 - 00:36:55 | Speaker 3:

Bad on that show I think that's why you have Those because I think you were Pulling them for me so I could get

00:36:55 - 00:37:45 | Speaker 4:

Angry about it I mean it's weird There is not a show that I love more That has worse writing than Hard Knocks on HBO it's like Everything that I have to and peace and love To my colleagues at CBS television But it's like everything that I have to push back Against in scripts which is Like wordplay can be fun And puns can be fun but they're also it's not It's it does not it's not comedy to me or it does not add anything to the piece and i think a lot of writers people who write stuff if they want to make something interesting they just want to think they want to write lines like this there's no whining in football but every august football comes to wine country i actually i could actually see myself putting i'm not even kidding that's now that i think about it that's that is something i probably would write let me jump on this audio

00:37:45 - 00:38:02 | Speaker 3:

wagon here just for a second because i never have an excuse to play this but i think i and i remember enjoying this with you this is a football player named eric barry but i don't really know who that is oh yeah the guy was afraid of horses exactly i have this tape and i don't know if this is from hard knocks or something eric barry is a very interesting story actually

00:38:02 - 00:38:36 | Speaker 1:

here let's take a quick listen to this you know all the cartoons and all the tv shows you see when you're young like horses and ponies are always really really cool and happy they always got like a rainbow or some stars flying behind it you know what i'm saying like oh it's a pony it's a pony so like i'm at the petting zoo and for some reason the pony came and bit me when it happened and i turned around and looked at it aside from the fact that the horse didn't look anything like the cartoon or what i saw on tv it was like dang horse like

00:38:36 - 00:38:47 | Speaker 4:

i trusted you that's so great by the way i would also be afraid of horses yes if i had been bitten

00:38:47 - 00:39:00 | Speaker 3:

by a horse that is the rational response horses are scary like i when i find myself to be around a horse i'm like oh my god you could kill me with one bad idea i still i still want to do this at

00:39:00 - 00:39:30 | Speaker 4:

some point you know one of my therapists recommended that i actually do like equine therapy Where you work with a horse And people really swear by it And I actually made some calls And then I wasn't called back By the equine therapy people Which hurt Which put me into a further Mental decline But anyway Horses You're exactly Luckily they are generally Cool to us But if they wanted to be uncool They could be And it would be a bad situation They're extremely powerful They have sharp hooves Big old chompers

00:39:30 - 00:39:32 | Speaker 3:

Those big eyes Those big black eyes

00:39:32 - 00:39:57 | Speaker 4:

Yeah I mean, in the words of Will Ferrell, when he was, let's see, when he was narrating the, what was it, the coronary? It was like the royal wedding or something. Everything about them just makes me nervous. Yeah. The thing I was going to say about Eric Berry that's sort of interesting is, well, first of all, he played. The reason that came up was because he played for the Kansas City Chiefs.

00:39:57 - 00:40:00 | Speaker 3:

And the Kansas City Chiefs had a whole.

00:40:00 - 00:40:29 | Speaker 2:

horse right as part of their whole like folder all and so there was some really amazing clips of the horse of eric barry the lowest priority for eric barry when he was a kansas city chief and he was a very good football player by the way who also beat cancer and had this very dramatic interception i think on a monday night game after he came back from cancer which was like a very feel-good moment um but when he was playing for the chiefs he was sort of interested in football But mostly interested in avoiding the horse

00:40:29 - 00:40:32 | Speaker 3:

On the sideline of the Kansas City Chiefs game

00:40:32 - 00:40:40 | Speaker 2:

Like he was miked up one time And it's just him constantly trying to triangulate Where the horse is related to where he is So that their paths do not cross

00:40:40 - 00:40:49 | Speaker 3:

And I'm guessing that that tape I played Is probably from Hard Knocks Based on the music behind it The dramatic It could have been from some other NFL film thing though

00:40:49 - 00:41:18 | Speaker 2:

I'm trying to find now Eric Berry Okay so Let me see if I can I'm sorry This is just What did you call it? the audio wagon giddy up we're jumping on the audio wagon today everybody i'm gonna this is this is uh let's see oh god is this gonna be this is eric barry mic'd up i don't know if this is going to if this is gonna pay off or not but this is eric barry walking on the sidelines telling his teammates he doesn't like horses okay oh hell no there go that horse i don't with that horse

00:41:19 - 00:41:19 | Unknown:

Huh?

00:41:20 - 00:41:24 | Speaker 1:

The horse. I'll wait until they got to the horse pass. I don't met with horses, bro.

00:41:28 - 00:41:35 | Speaker 2:

It goes on, but they've done a bunch of, they're trying to make this YouTube video cute, so they've animated it and all this stuff. But, yeah, he was very concerned about the horses on the side.

00:41:35 - 00:42:32 | Speaker 3:

Yeah, I don't fully blame him. The last time I think I saw a horse, and this is going back a long ways now, not like, I mean, I saw a horse up close and personal, was way back in New Hampshire my friend was like kind of farm sitting for some folks or I guess house sitting for some folks who had like a couple of horses and some other various animals but enough for one guy to handle I guess but anyway so we're he takes us out to say hello to the horses I think there were two of them and anyway we're we're petting the one and it's in its what do you call it stall that doesn't seem right sure no stall yeah and we're just kind of petting its head And then you're just like, wow, yeah, this is a beast like this is a beast. Right. And we're not paying attention. I found I find out later that I wasn't paying attention while Genevieve's hand was being chewed on a little bit by this horse. She's like later on. She's like, yeah, that horse is kind of biting me a little bit. I'm like, what? She's like, yeah, no, I didn't want to tell you because you would have freaked out. And then the horse would have freaked out.

00:42:32 - 00:42:37 | Speaker 2:

And it's like, OK, so apparently, I would not be able to keep that together.

00:42:37 - 00:42:56 | Speaker 3:

Yes, me too. And I think maybe maybe it was more like kind of nuzzling. But she did say that, like, you know, it was kind of like, you know, like, I don't know, it was using its teeth on her in some way, but in a non-threatening way. But the funny thing was she never saw the horse as a threat. She saw me and my fear as the threat, and rightfully so.

00:42:59 - 00:43:03 | Speaker 2:

That was really nice of her to help manage her experience that way. She had to be strong for both of you.

00:43:03 - 00:43:07 | Speaker 3:

Because she, I mean, I think she was also being strong because she didn't want me to freak out.

00:43:07 - 00:43:10 | Speaker 2:

And then if you freak out and the horse gets spooked, then it could actually go sideways.

00:43:10 - 00:43:15 | Speaker 3:

Yeah, that's why Genevieve would make a good Apocalypse Buddy, if anybody's looking for that.

00:43:15 - 00:44:16 | Speaker 2:

I mean, I don't, you know, I would be pretty bad at that. I think, I feel like I don't have a lot to offer when the society fully collapses. And also, I don't know, I don't want to be dark, but I think people tend to fall into a few camps when it comes, like, what are you going to do if, you know, the Apocalypse is coming? Some people are like, okay, I'm going to, like, you know, build a fort and I'm going to, like, whatever and get provisions. I'm like, I'm probably going to just go down to a dive bar, see if I can get in, see if they have any booze, have a few strong ones, and then probably walk into the Willamette. I'm not really that interested in, like, whatever world exists after that. Sounds exhausting, right? I'm like, if I was 26, sure, I'm here for it. Let's do a rebuild. But 46, I've had a good run. Yeah. I'll leave it to the younger people to sort it out. Good luck, everybody. I'm probably done. Yeah, me too. I'm probably going to, like, hole up with some, you know, provisions and some JMO, and I'm just going to kind of, you know, say adios to this whole situation.

00:44:16 - 00:44:25 | Speaker 3:

And if I become a zombie, if it's that kind of situation, like, I just want to be kind of one of the goofy zombies with kind of a funny personality. Right. You know what I mean? Like a manic pixie dream zombie.

00:44:26 - 00:44:41 | Speaker 2:

Is that a show title? Yes, it is. I'm writing it down. I don't know. We got to take a break here. We're running real late on that, but when we come back, we'll talk about this star photograph that made the rounds on the Internet recently. and do some emails and V-mails. Coming up here on TBTL.

00:44:50 - 00:44:51 | Speaker 1:

Thank you, baby.

00:44:52 - 00:45:00 | Speaker 2:

All right, let's thank some donors of the day who are making TBTL possible with their very generous...

00:45:00 - 00:45:26 | Speaker 3:

support folks like kathleen estes in olympia washington thank you kathleen kurt pewterbaugh is in shoreline washington i was just there which we spent a extensive amount of time talking about the local casino culture on uh i can't remember if it was friday or thursday show but um kurt thank you for the support kim hasket is in beautiful port orchard washington nice Have you been to Port Orchard ever, Andrew?

00:45:28 - 00:45:35 | Speaker 2:

Is that the place with all the parking lots? It's all just like concrete jungle kind of area?

00:45:35 - 00:45:36 | Speaker 3:

Sure, it's known for its parking lots.

00:45:36 - 00:45:43 | Speaker 2:

Yeah, I think I've been there. I don't think I've ever been to Port Orchard. It just sounds like the luscious place on earth, which is why.

00:45:43 - 00:46:56 | Speaker 3:

It is. It's on the water. It's over there by where my folks live in Silverdale. We used to be family friends. My parents are still friends with them With these folks that lived in Port Orchard And they were the most interesting family Their name were the Stimleys And actually one of them had this sign business That my dad, we moved up to Seattle For my dad to work at this sign business And when we got to Seattle Both of the guys at the sign business were like We don't really want to do this anymore Meaning my dad had to then figure it out But the Stimleys were really interesting They were really into Pressed flowers Like selling them like you know like flowers you'd put in a book or whatever they would do it very ornately and then calligraphy they just go around from like you know um art fair to art fair selling their stuff but they bought this old taxi cab this decommissioned taxi cab which was really fun to ride in the back of because you had way more leg room than normal and they would drive their whole family down to mexico in this taxi cab and surf all winter oh my gosh and then drive back to port orchard and sell their calligraphy and pressed flowers in the summertime in the northwest And they just did this for years and years They were like the coolest Christian hippie family that I knew

00:46:56 - 00:46:58 | Speaker 2:

I don't think you could get away with that in this economy

00:46:58 - 00:47:05 | Speaker 3:

You don't think You could just be a calligrapher by summer And a Mexican surfer

00:47:05 - 00:47:14 | Speaker 2:

By winter anymore Exactly, just take off five months for surfing From your calligraphy and flower business I mean, we don't know Kim Haskett's life

00:47:14 - 00:47:16 | Speaker 3:

Maybe that's what everybody in Port Orchard is doing I don't know

00:47:16 - 00:47:39 | Speaker 2:

Elena Flores is in los angeles california okay listen i um i am uh instagram friends with elena so i don't want to put anybody on front street but i think there are some congratulations in order i'll just leave it there elena from media congratulations i think some big things have been happening for elena but i you know could be wrong so i don't want to put on front street this kind of feels weird to

00:47:39 - 00:49:59 | Speaker 3:

me to be iced out of this conversation between you and elena well maybe you could be more friendly to elena elena didn't even reach out to me when i was recently in los angeles what this is this is i'm gonna okay let's uh let's also thank richard adams of west hills california and thank you richard appreciate it he's also down there in west hills uh and then jane halperin is in arlington virginia i'll be out that way in a few weeks doing wait wait don't tell me wolf trap on friday the 26th so maybe i'll catch jane out that way the thing i was going to say about being in los angeles and thank you to all of our donors of the yes thank you really absolutely would not be doing this without your help let me play this now as well hello and welcome to top story so um this is not the top story and i'll keep this pretty brief but i was on a jog on friday in la and i was jogging down lincoln boulevard and two fire trucks went past andrew loud more loudly and faster than i have ever seen fire trucks driving in my life like these fire trucks were both doing about 70 on like a arterial and and they were just right like back to back and i was like that is not a kitten in a tree like that's something and i was and i just thought i thought wow boy that's i wonder what they're on about and then i just continued my jog they so then i get i get to uh seattle uh rather i get to portland and then becca and i are driving around and she looks at her phone she goes oh wow the actress ann heche was in a fiery car accident oh yeah oh shit and then i looked up the article and i didn't and i was like oh wow that's a bummer for everybody involved etc and then this weekend i was just looking around the news and i happened to see an article about that crash and i happened to look at where it happened in mar vista and i realized that's where those fire trucks were going wow that It happened exactly when I was on that jog. It was 60 firefighters responded to it. And it was just a bizarre, I mean, not to center myself in the story because this is about other people, but it was weird to have had that moment of seeing these fire trucks and thinking, boy, what's that about? And then not hearing anything about this incident and then being in Portland in a car with Becca going, oh, Anne Heche was in a crash. And then going back and reading about it later and realizing, oh, that was what was going on when I was like, I wonder what that's about.

00:50:00 - 00:50:09 | Speaker 1:

Yeah, that's a weird feeling. You know, I meant to follow up on that story. I actually heard about that story potentially on Patriot Radio. I don't think so. I was flipping through the dial, but it was that same day.

00:50:09 - 00:50:15 | Speaker 2:

Your go-to source for shelf-stable foods and Anne Heche News.

00:50:15 - 00:50:26 | Speaker 1:

And Anne Heche News. But it might have been just like a Como top-of-the-hour news break or something. But, yeah, I heard about that. I was like, wow, that is weird. But I wanted to read more details of it. We don't know what's going on there.

00:50:26 - 00:51:18 | Speaker 2:

It seems like a pretty unfortunate story all the way around. It's unclear if she was under the influence or not, but there were some things that gave people that thought maybe about past behavior for her. Yeah, exactly. It's really sad, too, because she crashed into a house, and luckily, the woman who lived in the home had just left that room with her pets to go do something in a different part of the house. So she survived, but all of her possessions are destroyed. Her house is burned down. It sounds like Anne Hayes, unfortunately, suffered really severe injuries as well. So it's a pretty big bummer of a story all around for everyone. So I'm not trying to be, you know, get a load of my angle on this story. But it just, again, it was very bizarre to put the pieces together and realize that that was unfolding, of course, unbeknownst to me. And then, you know, it's rare you get an answer to the question, I wonder where those fire trucks are going.

00:51:19 - 00:52:31 | Speaker 1:

Unless you're really leaning into your old man, like if scanner. Yeah, I was going to say, if AM radio doesn't give you a good enough idea of who I am, the other night, I can't remember where Genevieve was, but I feel like Genevieve might have been out of town, or maybe she was just out somewhere and not getting back until late, and I was out on my front porch area, and I could just hear... You know, we live in an area where hearing sirens is not totally rare, whether it's fire engines or police sirens. But, like, it was one of those things where I was reading maybe or maybe I was watching – I've been watching The Boys, the TV show The Boys on my little, like, iPad thingy outside on summer nights. It's been kind of nice. And it takes you a while to realize, oh, those sirens have been going on for quite some time. You know what I mean? And how you kind of sort of retroactively realize, like, whoa, what's going on? And so I pause the show and I turn on I turn on the scanner app for North Seattle on my phone. And then I'm like kind of listening. And there was some sort of it was unclear. Like they were chasing somebody. There was something going on in the Home Depot parking lot.

00:52:31 - 00:52:51 | Speaker 2:

You managed to get the right frequency and they were talking about it. Because I feel like the couple of times I've tried to do that. They're never talking about The thing that's happening around me Where I'm like what's going on with this you know what I mean It feels like they're talking about some car Prowler somewhere you know even as there's 40 police cars Amassing on you know whatever

00:52:51 - 00:54:17 | Speaker 1:

MLK yeah I definitely heard But the thing is you never get like a clean Answer of exactly what's going on Because by the time you're tuning in The initial reports have already been Filed which is what they're reacting to But I do I know that I heard part of what was going on there was some sort of a pursuit that ended up on the highway and like and I even know like or at the time I knew the exit where the person ended up pulling over but it was unclear to me because it almost sounded like the people they were pursuing on the highway might have been the victim I think there was some sort of gun violence involved and it sounds like and it was unclear to me whether I was listening to because there are different you know conversations going on I'm listening to the scanner for all of North Seattle so you're hearing sometimes two different stories unfold at the same time and it's unclear if they're connected or not but it sounds like this might have started in the Home Depot parking lot which is not that far from me it sounds like there was gunfire involved I forgot to follow up the next day by listening or checking in with the Seattle Times to see what the story was but yeah I get weirdly yeah I don't know is it what's the word for it is that not prurient that's the wrong word but like you definitely kind of can get sucked into it sort of and there's a weird feeling of hearing the sirens in the air voyeurism I think is the word I was looking for I mean I don't know you know I don't think there's anything necessarily good about listening to the scanner certainly but well I think it's

00:54:17 - 00:54:51 | Speaker 2:

reasonable if you live in a neighborhood and there's a massive police or fire response I think it falls under the category of information that's relevant to your life sure yeah you know what I mean like I don't think it's just completely you know unnecessary and sort of looky-loo if it was you could make the argument if it's something that's happening three states away maybe it's like then the further the thing is from where you are the like less relevant it is to you and probably the less you need to be staring at someone else's the worst day of their life you know kind of thing yeah and but i mean also keep in mind though then

00:54:51 - 00:54:59 | Speaker 1:

when i when i realized that i could be needed i i put on my superhero cape and um belt and i have those they're kind of they're not really

00:55:00 - 00:55:02 | Speaker 2:

spandex pants. They're more like

00:55:02 - 00:55:14 | Speaker 1:

You go for the kind of larger more comfortable, less clingy superhero pants. They're like size 42. They hang a little bit past. But they're roomy. You're Janko man, right? Yeah, they're roomy.

00:55:14 - 00:55:19 | Speaker 2:

And then I like to really cinch them up with a belt around my waist. And then

00:55:19 - 00:55:39 | Speaker 1:

yeah. This really raises the question, how could we in Tonight Man? Yeah, if we had to do superhero costumes, they're all based on clothing that is far too tight fitting for your preference like is there a superhero who I mean is there a superhero who gets to wear loose

00:55:39 - 00:56:03 | Speaker 2:

clothing I mean I assume in some universe there is some superhero who's like comfy man or something you know there's always the hilarious jokester on Halloween who's like you know what'd you dress up as I dressed up as comfortable or you know my girlfriend's plus one or whatever right that's i feel like you wouldn't use that

00:56:03 - 00:56:18 | Speaker 1:

joke but i feel like you would be the would you go to a halloween party at this point in your life i think i could i think i could like would you dress up i guess i know you did colombo one year and that was a smash hit but are you past the past the part of your life where you think you'll

00:56:18 - 00:58:02 | Speaker 2:

ever dress up for halloween again or would you uh i'd prefer to avoid it like i don't i don't like Halloween um the thing about Halloween this is why I'm not giving you a straight answer here is it's a real damned if you do and damned if you don't situation because if I do end up in a situation where I have to go to a Halloween uh party or a more probable Genevieve throws a Halloween party because Genevieve loves Halloween right yeah last time Genevieve threw a Halloween party I said well then that's going to be the week that I'm going to go visit my folks in Cleveland I don't know if you remember that. Literally, so I was getting all these, like, photos of people hanging out in my house. Genevieve stuffed a, like, took some sort of padding and made a dummy with, I think, a Frankenstein mask. No, no, a rubber horse head mask and set it up on the couch in our extra room in our old apartment. Was that you? I think it was just she likes making dummies, but people did keep getting scared. Because the horse was wearing my Tonight Pants and, like, one of my flannel shirts or something. and I think it did give some people a start because they didn't realize I wasn't there and then I think there was some story about somebody actually having some sort of interaction and it took them a second to realize that it was just a dummy they thought it was me dressed up like a horse man but anyway all of that is to say you're damned if you do and damned if you don't because if you find yourself in a Halloween situation like I don't like dressing up that makes me uncomfortable but I also don't like standing out and if you're the person who isn't dressed up then you're standing out even more that you just go to Cleveland what got you to dress up as colombo i mean i think i've gotten maybe a little bit i mean social pressures i mean you know i i you really pulled it off it was a good look did i know you then i'm trying to remember i think i've just seen pictures maybe photos yeah i think that was maybe the last time i shaved and that's been

00:58:02 - 00:58:44 | Speaker 1:

over a decade now i think the last time that i dressed up for halloween i might be forgetting one but i think it was i dressed up as richard simmons oh and i was carrying a signed headshot of richard simmons which didn't really make sense but it but it was just so i could kind of shorthand in this very loud bar called the backdoor ultra lounge in seattle it was me camaro kev our friend kelly probably russell the veteran kerth was there r.i.p but um we uh i i had a wig and i had the the short shorts and the tank top obviously my body was a very different shape in those days Such that I felt comfortable going out In public in a tank top Although weirdly as long as I mean this was this

00:58:44 - 00:58:54 | Speaker 2:

Before or after I knew you because as long As I've known you well before oh okay Well before I was going to say because you've always had body Insecurity yet again it's sort Of all relative right there was a time you were comfortable

00:58:54 - 01:00:40 | Speaker 1:

Doing sure I was probably less Insecure in those days because I was Had the confidence of a much younger woman Andrew So people have been sending us this story I actually saw it over the weekend on Twitter as well French scientists photo of distant star was actually chorizo a photo tweeted by a famous French physicist which was supposedly of Proxima Centauri from the James Webb Space Telescope was actually a slice of chorizo Etienne Klein research director at France's alternative energies and atomic energy commission posted the photo last week claiming it showed the closest star to the sun this level of detail klein wrote a new world is revealed day after day and everybody was retweeting it and then he had to admit um that it was actually a chorizo he said he was trying to make a comment on false news but i guess i don't really know what that comment would be there's not a ton on this story klein told french news outlet la pointe that isn't intention had been to educate people about fake news online adding that i also think that if i hadn't said it was a james webb photo it wouldn't have been so successful um which is probably yeah because obviously because that's like half of my twitter feed is are just these very spectacular photos of you know long long ago time uh from that telescope i just this one i mean i'm it's obviously not offensive or in any way really hurting the world by the way andrew speaking of scanner situations there is black smoke in the distance that kind of looks like a house on fire and there's a news copter circling oh no from what i see here in portland so get on your scanner can

01:00:40 - 01:01:41 | Speaker 2:

you get on the portland scan i bet you i could but i probably not on the fly here but let's go back to this story though because you're right like you're luke you're asking all the right questions because like first of all he says oh it wouldn't have gotten the attention if i hadn't said it was from the telescope oh really you mean if you had just sent out a picture of a piece of sausage and said this is a piece of sausage it wouldn't have got yeah no that's the whole point and also and again i don't know how much of this like like you said the article i read is somewhat truncated and there's probably some translation things um but i don't believe for a moment that he thought to himself i am going to educate the world about spreading misinformation by mislabeling this piece of sausage and then tweeting it out he did it because it was funny in the moment and that's fine it's it is funny in the moment like what's wrong with that i love it i mean i think it's a pretty good spoof actually yeah it's just kind of it's just a goof you don't have to say that you were trying to teach them but i mean it sounds like i wonder if it has been out of shape

01:01:41 - 01:02:18 | Speaker 1:

about this huh yeah people were saying they felt misled i wonder if it's because of his highfalutin title yeah research director at france's alternative energies and atomic energy commission i wonder if it was like he just thought this was a funny joke which it is a pretty funny joke but then uh because like somebody there was like this we can't have people thinking that we're joking yeah and so now you have to kind of like explain to something more serious than that but it's just like a funny spoof yeah i'm with it exactly i mean all of those photos could be made up for all i know yeah i'm not out doing my own research i don't have my telescope going and i'm like wait a minute this isn't what i'm seeing with my space telescope you know i was thinking

01:02:18 - 01:02:41 | Speaker 2:

about this today and i'm going to say something here and i i think i i think i stand by this i mean i think that i'm being quite honest here not not again trying to be too cute by half but like and this just speaks to my lack i dislike this about myself but my lack of curiosity about the cosmos knows no bounds almost like the cosmos i it's expanding your lack of interest is expanding

01:02:41 - 01:02:46 | Speaker 1:

Yes, and I know that Ever expanding and powered mostly by dark matter

01:02:46 - 01:03:23 | Speaker 2:

And I feel bad, you know, I know we have listener Summer Who like, you know, this is her world And is always sending us, you know Emails and articles to get us into it And I apologize, but like I was thinking about it too, I'm like, well Honestly, if there was, if I had to Choose, you know, you can picture the Meme of the weird space The astronaut guy having To choose between button one and button two Do you know this meme? I feel like sometimes i mentioned memes and you don't know them but anyway yes this is one of those times okay well in one button says sign up for an instagram account of all pictures of sausage and one says sign up for an instagram account of all pictures of like space and the cosmos i'm probably pushing

01:03:23 - 01:04:59 | Speaker 1:

the sausage button right like well this is perfect for you then yeah exactly it's both this is basically sausage in space you're going to do both right i think it's just fascinating because it represents as close as we'll get to time travel because what we're able to see with this thing is light coming light that's from like i don't know how many billion years ago 13 billion years ago light so and i'm gonna i'm sure i'm gonna in summer if you're listening i apologize anybody else who's just smarter than us which is most of these listeners apologies i'm gonna probably mess up the terminology between galaxies and solar systems and whatnot basically Sure, that too, that stuff Basically We're able to look at light That Took so long There are these galaxies And whatever they are Things out there That are no longer We're looking at the light That's been traveling for 13 billion years To get to where we're now seeing it That's not even what's happening there anymore These places are now different I don't think they're really a place Again, the terminology is going to leave a lot of people throwing their phone. But these interstellar places, if we can call them that, are not even in this condition anymore. They're 13 billion years different. But we're seeing the light that took that long to travel. So we're getting to look at basically a photograph of these things that was taken 13 billion years ago. So we get to see how stuff was in the past. But it's kind of a mind bleep to think about it Because it's a photograph of something

01:05:00 - 01:05:02 | Speaker 3:

that happened a long, long, long time ago, and The Thing is not like it anymore.

01:05:02 - 01:05:07 | Speaker 2:

Yeah. But we're seeing the picture of it. Like, this light doesn't even know that The Sopranos is going to come out.

01:05:08 - 01:05:08 | Speaker 3:

Right.

01:05:08 - 01:05:10 | Speaker 2:

Like, it's just like...

01:05:10 - 01:05:21 | Speaker 3:

Exactly. Actually, it does, and it did not like The Thing. But now, like me, it's actually come around to think, well, you know, I'm still talking about it 13 billion years later. So that means it must have been a good ending.

01:05:24 - 01:05:32 | Speaker 4:

Here I go once again with the email. Every week, I hope that it's from a female. Oh, man, it's not from a female.

01:05:32 - 01:05:54 | Speaker 2:

Why do we play the Doogie Howser music, Andrew? I am so glad you asked, Luke, because last week on the show, of course, we debuted our new segment, which it first ended, which we were going to call TBTL Explained. But then we realized we're going to call it TBTL Unexplained because we have no idea what we're talking about this this weekend.

01:05:54 - 01:06:14 | Speaker 3:

I was like, it is rare that we have a segment that I, I don't ruminate about the show kind of as much as you do, but I spent a good part of the weekend just thinking about how bad that segment was. It's not, it's not your fault. It's not the listener's fault. It's my fault. It's because I don't know anything about the origin of anything on this show.

01:06:14 - 01:07:30 | Speaker 2:

You're going to totally come around on this because check this out. This is the power and the beauty of TBTL right here because the point of this segment, if you didn't happen to hear it, was to answer people's questions. We have people who have been listening to the show for, I don't know, eight years, but they missed the first couple of years. And so they don't know things like what does this inside joke mean or what is this weird audio thing you've been playing for years and years? It's always kind of been in the back of my head to wonder about that. And so now we're going to do a segment where you write in like, what is this joke? What does this mean? Why do you do that? And so we had our first experiment with this last week, and you and I fumbled around a little bit. And, of course, I was fumbling my sweaters like you wouldn't believe. The listeners have come in now on this Monday with some more details of some of the things that we couldn't answer, including why do we use this, the Doogie Howser music, underneath our emails. Now, before I get to the answer to that question, I would like to point out that we also asked people to submit their, well, submissions for possible theme music for this segment. Oh, yes. Okay. I am excited about this part. And we've gotten one so far. This is from listener Allie. Take a listen to this.

01:07:30 - 01:07:52 | Speaker 1:

Dummies don't know what you're saying. So please start explaining. TBTL explained Dummies, I know what you're thinking And yes, I need your reasons TBTL explained

01:07:52 - 01:07:56 | Speaker 2:

Nice. Thank you for that, Allie, by the way. That's good.

01:07:56 - 01:07:59 | Speaker 3:

A little Gwen Stefani coming at you.

01:07:59 - 01:08:02 | Speaker 2:

So that's our current theme music for this segment.

01:08:03 - 01:08:07 | Speaker 3:

I have to tell Allie the bad news is that the segment's actually called TBTL.

01:08:07 - 01:08:13 | Speaker 2:

unexplained i know well i think i actually think that's kind of funny i think that's funnier now

01:08:13 - 01:08:26 | Speaker 3:

that would be on brand for our show and then sometime 10 years from now 13 billion years from now when we're still doing the show someone will ask why if the segment is called tbchel unexplained is the listener singing tbchel explained and i'll go i have no idea because

01:08:26 - 01:10:29 | Speaker 2:

this you know it's on shifting ground everything that is built on this show is built on shifting ground but um somebody had written in to say why do you use the doogie hauser music under your email segment and i i thought we had started using it much earlier i i had said i don't know probably came around in like 2015 when i was new to tbtl being my full-time job and i probably had too much time on my hands i don't know that was as close as i could get basically the answer was i don't know we just decided at some point to use it well it's a good segment listener david has been he's one of the listeners who's been going back and listening to a lot of the archives just coincidentally and he says the doogie music was added on february 21st 2017 he didn't mention that that's my sister's birthday which again seems weird but there you go he says the justification if i ever have a um like a password clue being like what is your sister's birthday i can't choose that one because i've said it on the show too many times yeah now it's out there yeah the doogie music was added on february 21st 2017 the justification was that it was contemplative and reflexive you can hear the discussion around the one hour 30 minute mark of episode number 2320 well luke you might have noticed i was a little late dialing up today because i wanted to grab this audio so the part that you're not going to hear on this tape is me babbling a mile a minute much as i'm doing right now and talking about the kind of on-demand streaming experience Thank you.

01:10:00 - 01:10:42 | Speaker 1:

and seeing the same advertisements over and over again. And somehow I'm making a comparison between like Schitt's Creek, which you're going to sit down and specifically dial up and watch, versus a show like, I don't know, Doogie Howser, where you just flip on the TV and it happens to be on. Very similar to the conversation that you and I were having at the beginning of today's show about radio. Very little has changed in the last 15 billion years. So all of that has been cut out, but I've just made a Doogie Howser reference. I said something like, you know, Doogie Howser, And then I'm like, you know, I'm making fun of myself. I'm like, hey, Doogie Howser, that's still a show that's on TV. That's a relevant reference. Right, Luke? And then this is where the tape picks up. I just had a thought, by the way. Should we consider?

01:10:44 - 01:11:03 | Speaker 2:

God, I love that music. I was just thinking that maybe what our email segment needs is just the Doogie Howser music under it. I think you are a genius. We've probably already done this on the show. I know. That was back when you still liked me.

01:11:04 - 01:11:14 | Speaker 1:

Well, tolerated you more openly. Maybe I would do that. Here, let's listen. So that was, what was the date? So February 21st, 2017. Let's listen a little bit more.

01:11:14 - 01:11:47 | Speaker 2:

Jeez, I honestly, okay, sorry. I keep versions of the Doogie Howser theme in my iTunes already. So we can start with Strong Bad into the music. Yes, because it was a reflective time for Duke to kind of look back on the experience he had during that episode. I mean, I think as a kid, it was like, you know, Ira Glass talks about the moment of reflection on This American Life. It was modeling for that for me as a young kid. I was like, this is what child doctors do. At the end of the day, they sit at their home computer and they kind of reflect back.

01:11:48 - 01:12:02 | Speaker 1:

And yeah, also it might keep us on point a little bit more. Like, when we have the music underneath us, I think we're more hesitant to go so far. Yeah, I just wanted to get to that part, too. Oh, young, hopeful Andrew thinks the Doogie Howser music is going to keep us on point.

01:12:03 - 01:12:06 | Speaker 2:

No, instead, we'd beat that out of you eventually.

01:12:06 - 01:12:26 | Speaker 1:

We just made a 10-hour version of the Doogie theme song to accommodate our needs. But, yeah, so that's real. Thank you, David, so much for tracking down that actual moment where we stumbled on that. And it really did just happen because I made a Doogie reference during the email segment. You pulled up that music and the rest is history.

01:12:26 - 01:14:11 | Speaker 2:

I know that 2017 was five years ago, which I don't formally recognize that. I know. I believe in science, but I don't really believe in the calendar that's telling me that was five years ago. But even so, that is much more recent than I would have expected. Yeah. Me too. I probably said a version of this on Friday. But, like, if you had asked me, or, like, if you would have told me, oh, that was something that Jen came up with and that we've been doing it since six months into the show, I would go, yeah, that totally checks out. I knew it wasn't bad, yeah. That's how bad my memory is for things. I was, again, was talking to Becca about this over the weekend because, and I don't know how this goes for you and Genevieve Andrew, but, like, I think it's sometimes shocking to her the things that I don't remember. like you know from pretty recent history and then but then she's also shocked at the things i do remember like i remember these weird specific details like we were on a jog in salem in a place called minto park and we ran into a friend of hers who she had just described to me before and i said oh you must be and i said the person's name and later she was like wow i'm surprised that you knew who that was or you remembered that name and i was like i can't remember like when things happened to me like oh that was in 2012 or whatever like i can't remember i'm really bad with timelines on things and also where i was when things were happening we were in salem and i said how's your friend's wine how's your friend's winery doing here and she was like i was where we sat on that little cafe and had wine she's like that was in napa it was a completely different state and i was like oh yeah exactly like it's just my brain is just very weird in that i i have pretty good recall on bizarre details but then extremely bad recall on other things that seem obvious well i

01:14:11 - 01:14:59 | Speaker 1:

do think that you are very specifically good with people like in that way that you like you are good with names and faces and details and making people feel um kind of kind of comfortable or seen in in that way um and so i that doesn't surprise me and i think that's what um you know i know you didn't do this for a i don't think it was a huge chunk of your career but like one of the most intimidating things about um you know covering congress for me if i think about that other than you know not knowing how laws are made um is uh the idea of having to like kind of keep all those names and you know just being being in the capital and just like recognizing that person is that person the information that you need and be able to run up to somebody grab an interview because like you just know everybody there like i can't even same with even state houses you know my

01:14:59 - 01:15:01 | Unknown:

You

01:15:00 - 01:15:11 | Speaker 2:

friends who cover the statehouse it tends to be people who are good with people and good with names and faces who are also good at those jobs i i you know i didn't ever get there certainly

01:15:11 - 01:16:12 | Speaker 1:

were so many people there covering that stuff that just had it so down so much more than me but i tried to of course use that to my advantage by doing such stories as get a load of these two congress dudes who look alike that was a kind of rigorous reporting i was bringing to the airways during my stint there i would it never last in the current era of npr where most of the stories are about substantive things i just wanted to do i i literally asked this congressperson these two guys steve king and tom tancredo again both with actually terrible politics but i asked one of them i i think i asked steve king if i could punch him to see if tom tancredo would feel it i mean this is this is the kind of shit that i was that i was doing in my during my time and i'm putting this in air quotes covering congress it was fun to pun steve king though i know you know what thinking about it like i should have done to both of them just as an excuse to give them both a you know a little bit of a shot to the arm but okay i have another um this is

01:16:12 - 01:17:34 | Speaker 2:

interesting too we were talking about the birthday segment and i nobody asked why we do the birthday segment i think somebody asked why we use the music that we use for the birthday segment and yes unclear um but sydney did want to write in to say by the way it was my husband who unknowingly brought the birthday segment back on february 8th 2018 almost exactly one year later luke from the doogie music um we love a lot of things happen in februaries so this february like you know my daughter's birthday write down everything that happens because it'll become a tb tell canon but my husband unknowingly brought the birthday segment back on February 8th 2018 when he wrote a long impassioned letter asking you to read it on the show wishing me a happy birthday he knew that a wish from you would mean more to me than any material gift so apparently because I think I could be wrong about this but I'm pretty sure Jen always had a very anti-birthday segment mentality when she was producing the show I think that that was something that popped up long before my time but then apparently this email from Sydney's husband kind of softened me up and it must have opened the door a little bit and so I think I advocated for bringing it back and then flip flopped on my feelings and you've regretted it every day of your life I still don't know how I feel about it but there you go my

01:17:34 - 01:18:12 | Speaker 1:

take on the blurs days is if you do not enjoy that segment then you are more than free to just skip the last seven minutes Of the show on Thursday It seems like If it's just not your cup of tea That's totally fine I know that some people They get a lot of joy out of it If they get a birthday wish Or if they wish themselves a birthday Get to hear their name on the show I think it's overall a positive And I think worst case scenario You just go okay Thursday When I hear the opening notes Of Tim Heidecker singing There's a right way to rock And a wrong way to roll Then that's just time for you to go Do something else Yeah I do that

01:18:12 - 01:18:58 | Speaker 2:

like especially for shows that are like ours that are just like kind of a lot of content every week you know like i've gotten much more liberal with just being like oh okay oh you're gonna do some interview with like like if i'm listening to a sports podcast like lebitard or back in the day when i was listening to maybe petros and money or whatever or even the kevin the old kevin and bean show i remember they would talk to a lot of mma players and like i just have no interest in listening to an mmm player being interviewed now i never took the opportunity to write into these shows and say it really i just really wish you would stop interviewing mmma players or fighters i would just say have i been saying players this whole time by the way mma no but you did call it mmm which i thought that was just a stutter that was a stutter but uh i like calling them mma players

01:18:58 - 01:19:08 | Speaker 1:

uh but anyway you know what i mean calling them mlm as in multi-level marketing they just have people on talking about candle businesses it's pretty easy just to go ahead and skip the stuff

01:19:08 - 01:19:12 | Speaker 2:

Especially when there's like Eight hours of this shit a week

01:19:12 - 01:19:23 | Speaker 1:

Exactly, listen, take any opportunity To not listen to parts of this show Would be my advice Alright, speaking of not listening to the show I think we're going to be done for the day

01:19:23 - 01:19:25 | Speaker 2:

Yeah, thanks for clearing this up folks

01:19:25 - 01:19:26 | Speaker 1:

See, this is what I really

Isn't the segment even better now Because now people are affected

01:19:29 - 01:20:09 | Speaker 1:

Well, yeah, I mean, I guess It's just the problem is That we have to go through the process And again, I have to go through the process Of just not knowing anything About the show in order for then the listeners To eventually fill in the details like I do Think it was satisfying to get that tape And to know the story But again we have to publicly Flail even worse than normal in order to Generate that it's funny that you're in your head About that like I just don't care It's weird because I feel like you're usually beating yourself Up over the show much more Than I do but There was something about, like, I believe there might have been three or four questions, and I believe my answer to all three or four questions was, I don't know. Thank you. I guess we just started doing it at some point.

01:20:10 - 01:20:19 | Speaker 2:

But now it gives the listeners a chance to, you know, what makes them feel better than, you know, knowing more than us. Like, it's great. Yes. And it creates more content.

01:20:19 - 01:20:20 | Speaker 1:

You're welcome, listeners. It's a gift.

01:20:21 - 01:20:22 | Speaker 2:

Luke, way to play dumb.

01:20:23 - 01:20:48 | Speaker 1:

Thanks for taking that bullet. Yeah, you know what? It's fine. And I'm so egoless that I'm happy to sound dumb to the listeners in order to give them the feeling they need to have. Yeah. All right. Well, thanks, everyone, for listening today. We are going to be back here tomorrow with more imaginary radio for you. So please do join us for that. Until then, have an absolutely splendid Monday. Take care of yourselves. Go Mariners. Are they playing today?

01:20:49 - 01:20:49 | Speaker 2:

Yep.

01:20:50 - 01:21:21 | Speaker 1:

Playing a team from New York. Oh, okay. I haven't heard much about them. They're a new team. Go Mariners. And please remember, no mountain too tall. And good luck to all. He's always watching for the horse, making sure the horse doesn't look at him or do something crazy. As long as it's like 10, 15 people between me and the horse, I'm good. Everybody is born with a choice, and I'm making the choice not to deal with the horse.

01:21:21 - 01:21:22 | Speaker 2:

Power out.
