Okay, here's the thing, Jack. Your plan isn't gonna work. Your shows are terrible. I mean, have you seen that new game show homonym?

00:00:08 - 00:00:27 | Speaker 1:

Your next word is meet. Oh, boy. Um, like when two people run into each other. Oops, sorry. It's the other one. Your next word is stare. Okay, um, the things you climb to get... No, it's the other one. It's always the other one. Let me see the card. No! Never! TBTL!

00:00:30 - 00:00:45 | Speaker 2:

All right, hello, good morning, and welcome to day five of the TBTL Summer Games. My name is Luke Burbank right over there. My dear friend and trusted colleague, Andrew Walsh. Good morning, my friend.

00:00:47 - 00:01:35 | Speaker 1:

Unmute the mic. Unmute the mic. There we go. It's been a while. I got excited, though. The reason my microphone was still muted was because that intro tape from 30 Rock makes me want to quiz you on homonyms. But I don't know how to make a quiz on the fly here now. Of course, in that case, I know it's easy to just say a thing and then I'll try to guess which version of it you're thinking of. Right. Exactly. Like I now have a list of homonyms here. So which am I thinking of when I say banned? The thing that happened to me on YouTube. That's exactly right. Also, burn that vacuum cleaner, my friend. Burn that vacuum cleaner. show title burn that vacuum cleaner here we are closing out week one luke are you ready for this

00:01:35 - 00:02:06 | Speaker 2:

i am so ready for this i was wondering you know of course um we uh we record these a bit in advance because this is our little time in the summer uh at least for me to take some time off you're still going to be working posting shows doing tbtl related stuff but i think presuming our bosses aren't listening let's just say the the pace slows a bit it's a little bit of a a little bit of a break for both of us in a certain way what do you think you'll be getting up to when you're not doing tbtl on the summer break hardcore puttering i assume i can almost guarantee you

00:02:06 - 00:02:46 | Speaker 1:

that while we're listening to this i am waiting for my boss to get back with me on edits of the tbtl newsletter um that is probably happening on this friday yes exactly um and uh what am i going to be getting up to you know what i need to do is i need to look at the mariners schedule see if maybe i could go to a maybe i could go to a day game if i can kind of work around that that would be fun i don't know i don't have any plans though i am i mean it really in all legitimacy it is a work week for me so i don't want to i don't want to be um you know playing hooky too much but uh but yeah no i can maybe get a get up to something i was thinking i had a crazy thought the other day

00:02:46 - 00:03:25 | Speaker 2:

which was maybe I buy some season tickets for the Mariners next year and mostly just resell them because I like gambling. And I am of the opinion, now again, when this airs, who knows exactly where the Mariners will be in terms of their winning percentage and things like that. But regardless of what happens this season, I think that certainly the building blocks are in place for a very promising team and a very young team. And just Julio Rodriguez alone is worth the price of admission And Juan Soto Exactly They don't even know that the Mariners have Juan Soto It's crazy

00:03:25 - 00:03:43 | Speaker 1:

We're in a biodome You know, the other thing though, Luke, is If you get on the season ticket list I don't know if you have to be season ticket list for this past season or this coming season But that would also, is this what you were about to say, get you access to those All-Star tickets?

00:03:43 - 00:04:42 | Speaker 2:

yes those sweet sweet you get first crack at the all-star tickets if you uh if you're a season ticket holder and i really was just thinking man you know if i bought a couple of season tickets and i don't think i would even do the whole season but you can do like 40 games or something i could basically probably resell 35 of those games to me maybe make enough money to sure to you the high mark at a at an incredible at a usurious markup and then um and then just you know have first crack at the all-star game but then also uh you know again maybe even make some money and i know for certain teams like chicago cubs and i mean really just it depends on the team but like for a lot of teams that are a hot ticket people buy their season tickets purely as a speculative sort of operation like you're just thinking if i secure these tickets now and then there are a lot of sellouts this could actually be something that makes me money and then you get

00:04:42 - 00:07:41 | Speaker 1:

to go to the game when you want to right well i do have those tickets that i bought remember we were laughing about it my very first trip to costco i was like why are they selling baseball tickets at costco but i did buy four tickets in that um what do you call it the uh it's that second level. The Terrace? The Terrace view which is really nice and they were they were not that expensive given what the terrace is and i've been to the terrace now so i know what i bought and uh that is true like i bought those tickets i think for 60 bucks a piece and so if i were to get those now especially after the mariners have heated up um i don't think that those tickets would be a mere 60 so you're right that is exactly the situation i'm in maybe i should sell those right now no i'm i'm actually semi-seriously considering it plus i would just like to brag that i have i've never had season tickets to yeah yeah I know just feel like it would make me along with my gold 75k status in Alaska it could really just make me some finally people will be shouting your name your name will be on marquees oh wait it already is every week for live wire um also boy does it go down fast let me tell you what that's you got to be careful um getting too much of your self-esteem from that because there is the walking up to the theater and seeing your name which feels great and then there is the you walk out and they're already taking your name down because they have a different show coming the next night and that's when you realize just how kind of ephemeral it all is right yeah exactly who are the bodega boys actually terrible example because did you just hear that desus and marrow are no more as a i heard that on npr and i was bummed about that and also it was like are they maybe not friends that's what andrew limbon was was uh sort of speculating there's no word as to what happened yeah i'm trying to get a beat on that because they're they're they're interesting they interact with their fans pretty well on social media and there was like some of this like um like Kid Miro was like kind of commenting to some fans about things that Desus had tweeted and like I'm not I don't follow them closely enough to get all the ins and outs but it did seem like there was a little bit of acrimony the podcast itself had gotten cold I think back in November and now their show their Showtime show is stopping after just like i don't know 15 episodes into what should have been like a 40 episode season or something like that because it's like a late night format so anyway that's a that's a real bummer like i do you think we if we were to have a personal and professional falling out do you think it would make waves would it would it be other than the tens would it be noted by anyone would it be in the washington post would it be like the desus and marrow split is would david folk well folk conflicts your friend he would take your side i don't want him covering this if this goes This has been a lifelong project for me to accumulate. I'd have Pesca on my side. I'd have Fulkin Flick. Robert Smith would do a Planet Money about it. It would all be very pro-Luke and very anti-Andrew. You'd basically have Hannah. You'd have Hannah. You'd have Josh in New Hampshire. Who are the other? Maybe. It pisses me off that you have Genevieve somehow.

00:07:43 - 00:10:23 | Speaker 1:

How'd he get Genevieve in the divorce? It's the one that really burns, I'll be honest with you. All right, so we are going to play a game today. Before we take our little break, is there anything you can tell me about this game? It's sent in by the Perfect Ten, Nick Arms, correct? That is absolutely right. Yeah, Nick, who once dressed up like a hot dog to be the doorman at one of our events in Florida. I can't believe that my memory—well, I can believe that I can't remember this, Andrew, But was that before or after I think you should leave came out? That was before. Oh, shoot. You know what? You were telling me about I think you should leave, I think, in Australia. Remember we flew 13 hours but then still had a layover and another five-hour flight? We don't even talk about that second five-hour flight because the 13-hour one was so long. But I think that was so dispiriting to realize there was basically the equivalent of a New York to Los Angeles flight. Right. That was just a rounding error. Luke, I don't even remember. Call that a fly. I remember nothing about that flight. I have no idea. Like we had flown for 13 hours, got off the plane. You got yourself a hungry jack in the airport. And now here's the thing. This is getting into way too much detail. But you were telling me about the Tim Robinson episode of that Netflix comedy roundup. Remember, before before I think you should leave was a thing. we were exposed to kind of a pilot episode of it because i believe netflix was they did a season of a show where they would let one comedian kind of just take it over do you remember this characters okay yes right and so i remember you telling me about the i think you can leave if we can call it that episode of that show way back when we were in australia so i don't know when did schubert dip come out well because he does a character see i'm so the timing is so sort of i don't know jumbled in my mind because i my memory is that i saw that tim robinson thing after i think you should leave came out and i was so excited then to find out there was more content i could find an email somewhere uh maybe in my sent folder where i sent i think maybe you and chris Thank you. an email on like a saturday morning i was traveling for work somewhere and i started watching i think you should leave like on my laptop and i was dying dying laughing and sorry i'm also uh treating myself this afternoon with a diet dr pepper oh and um that's great for the taste buds but lousy for the repeats which are trying to repeat on me even as i talk to you

00:10:23 - 00:10:29 | Speaker 2:

andrew do you remember what year we went to australia by any chance oh god i'm trying to

00:10:29 - 00:11:16 | Speaker 1:

figure this out now to 1997 yes i'm looking it up you're absolutely right well i listen i'm sorry i interrupted you but just the reason that i was wondering is because if if this was in fact if our uh cross-country tour of shows right because we did a show at a waffle house and then we did a show in new york and then we did a boat show in seattle if that tour proceeded i think you should leave it means nick probably has some kind of a lawsuit on his hands because he showed up to the waffle house show fully decked out in a hot dog outfit not unlike the one tim robinson's wearing in that very iconic sketch where someone crashes like a wienermobile style vehicle into a clothing store and then tim robinson's character is acting confused about who could have been the person

00:11:16 - 00:12:50 | Speaker 2:

driving the hot dog mobile right um i do think that we will get the best danny lawyers on that I also want to say there is something nuts here That I don't think I realized I remember having a really busy Like there was like a Three or four month period where you and I Were doing a lot of TBTL related activities Including like going on that little mini Tour of doing three shows Ending up back here in Seattle We did a TBTL picnic right around then But what I did not realize and I realize we are Really far away from what we should be doing right now But I'm kind of obsessed with this now Our Australia trip was in May of 2019 for whatever it's worth I think you should leave debuted in 2019 in April of 2019 so it does make sense that you were telling me that in the airport in Australia because it was pretty new and you were excited about it and you probably told us to check out that very first maybe you had already told us about that very first episode on the characters but the thing that's blowing my mind is my mind as you might say is it looks like our little mini tour was like in August of 2019 so in the spring you and i went to australia drove across the damn continent and then a mere couple of months later we decided to do a little tour that sounds weirdly ambitious i would never do that now i do remember it was a very busy i do remember it was a very busy time because again and i think mixed up in all of that too was like the wasn't this around the same time we did we went to the fair in minnesota and we went to the um uh thing festival and did a show

00:12:50 - 00:13:42 | Speaker 1:

there like we did a lot i remember we did the thing festival and then we had to like hightail it to minnesota where i think we did a show at the state fair um yeah like what i i always assumed that that tour god this is not interesting radio summer games but i know i always for some reason in my mind that tour that we did where again we went to the waffle house went to new York and went to Seattle in the course of like five days or four days it was a very very quick turnaround I somehow have made that into a TB telethon in my mind because you know oftentimes when we're traveling places it's because we're doing the thon and you're right that had nothing to do with that I guess we were just feeling what ambitious I guess probably was that a goal we had to check off somewhere was that no I don't in order to keep is that like me learning karate Where I just put it down as a goal And then we had to do it to make good on it

00:13:42 - 00:15:12 | Speaker 2:

Like I definitely remember doing the tour I think we did want to do the tour As sort of a That came again I'm sorry that we're going into detail on this But I do think that little mini tour Just doing Florida, New York and Seattle Was a way of I think it came out of a conversation About a way to kind of like Give some, for lack of a better word Fan appreciation I think we kept the tickets incredibly low priced And we just felt like we had been fundraising a lot and everybody had been very generous and kept the show going. And we wanted just to do something that would be like kind of fun and affordable and for people in those areas like not have high boundaries. And so I think that's how the tour came about. But the thing that still blows my mind. Why did we decide it had to be like in a week? Because that was that was a pretty aggressive turnaround, like I said, for us. I don't know. And also, I know that that we did thing right before that because that was August. I'm looking all this up now. we did thing then we did this tour and then we came back we did a picnic in seattle like all of that happened in pretty short succession the thing that blows my mind is this was right after australia that i did not remember that was only four months after australia so yeah there is no way i would get you to agree to that sort of stuff again that's not true are you shitting me that is dude no that is you're right that is absolutely untrue in fact that was the email where you were talking behind my back about how i'm nervous to do stuff like that and then you forwarded it to me and then you were like you don't have to read that email you didn't realize you had copied me on it or hadn't cut out the part of the thing where you were slagging me

00:15:12 - 00:15:55 | Speaker 1:

behind my back well i gotta check with andrew because he's not usually up for this stuff that's fair that's fair i think what i'm conflating is how in your personal life you like to leave buffer days you like to not over commit to things because by the way thank you nick for submitting this amazing game um i think in your personal life you are very much a time realist and you you don't commit to things that you don't want to do and you don't like you just have good boundaries and things but i will totally give you credit you're right when it comes to our job as doing tbtl you're very game like you'll hitchhike down the mississippi you'll stack up a bunch of events you're right that's that was an unfair characterization both to your face and

00:15:55 - 00:16:32 | Speaker 2:

behind now i will say that i do put strong boundaries around things that would that involve like for lack of a better word my body in other words like you know we've had conversations on the show recently about like well would we do like would we ride bikes from seattle to portland and i'm not saying i would never do that but it would take a lot of training before i would just jump in and do that will i eat something gross and weird no i'm not going to do that will i will i uh you know ignore my fear of heights and and be on top of a um on top of a billboard i literally could not do that like i i would just i would it would be a medical situation but as far as like as far

00:16:32 - 00:18:04 | Speaker 1:

as when it comes to things related to the show you are you you are generally saying yes and you're right you have demonstrated over the years that you're willing to like pile a bunch of stuff up professionally stack a bunch of stuff up that i don't think you would do in your personal life yeah no yeah certainly so that's i think that's where i think i'm getting that impression of you But you're right, in fairness God, first Deezus and Mero, now us All the big podcasting Are breaking up Thanks Nick You really got us We gotta take a break because we're gonna come back And we're gonna have no time to play Nick's game That he put together for us Quick break and then back in a moment Here on the last episode of TV Enjoy it Alright, let's get going with this I'm actually very excited, I started the show Andrew talking about maybe buying season tickets to the Mariners although sorry we need to get to the game but I just realized something when they call them season tickets the reason that I'm thinking about this because a friend of mine said that they were gonna probably buy season tickets in fact they had bought season tickets I was like oh my gosh that's amazing and they were like well it's for 40 games and I was like can you call them season tickets if it's 40 games to me season tickets is like you know you bought 61 games you know whatever half of wait that's not how that works at all that would mean the season is 122 games 81 games like that to me is a season ticket uh but they call them season tickets yeah they do and they because they have something called

00:18:04 - 00:20:57 | Speaker 2:

flex plans and whatever that's what i was going to mention before like yeah you can just get one of the smaller flex plan but okay bro i've been i was i've been tempted to get that flex plan for a while now except for this season like again maybe it was because the the weather turned nice so late but i have not gone to very many games but anyway let's get in point is this is baseball related this quiz that nick put together is baseball related so let's do it to it my dude exactly so here's how uh nick describes it um this is all about mlb ballparks each with a right or wrong answer um and he added some information um about the the uh the factoid here that we will get once we um once we answer it so here's how this is going to work luke i'm going to ask you these questions and you are going to give me the answer and then i will uh tell you whether or not you were right or wrong this has to be a one person game so sorry i am stalling here a little because i have one little technical thing that i'm working on to get all of the answers in front of me here but i will be ready in just one minute i know you know the answer to this first one luke because you and i were talking about this um before the before the show like i don't know a few weeks ago when the mariners were in boston uh playing the red sox so here's your first question what is the name of the right field foul pole at boston's fenway park now it's multiple it's multiple choice But you don't need it, my friend, because you're right. It's technically Pesky's Poll, but I've heard it the Pesky Poll as well. Pesky's Poll is the name given to the right-field foul pole. I'm having trouble saying foul pole. Did I say that right, and then I just stopped? You said it fine. Foul pole, okay. It is named after John Pesky, a Red Sox player never known for home run power who one day hit a home run that struck the pole. You knew all that. I did. I feel like I had heard that story probably during a long drubbing by the Red Sox where Rick Riz or Dave Niehaus was just looking to fill time and not focus so much on the on-field product and gave the story of the Pesky poll or Pesky's poll. There's also, I don't know why I have to take, I got that answer very quickly. Now I'm going to go into this observation that's probably wrong, but I also have a strong memory of somebody hitting a home. i think it might have been carlton fisk hitting a home run down the line and trying to will it to stay fair this was an extremely critical home run where it's just the image i have in my head as a kid is him waving at the ball waving at it to stay fair like trying to use his physical body you don't see that kind of stuff from the players anymore no you don't and my my sense is that that might have actually happened at fenway but i could be wrong about that i never wanted to just get the

00:20:57 - 00:21:04 | Speaker 1:

I feel like I can picture that, too. Isn't it somebody on their hands and knees blowing the ball or am I thinking of something else? I'm being serious. No.

00:21:04 - 00:21:11 | Speaker 2:

Oh, yeah. That's a famous that shows up on a lot of those blooper videos where it's somebody trying to blow the ball foul.

00:21:12 - 00:21:18 | Speaker 1:

Yeah. Blow it foul. Not fair. Yeah, that makes sense. Yeah. If it was like the catcher, the first baseman or something.

00:21:18 - 00:21:46 | Speaker 2:

So, OK, hold on. Sorry. I'm doing this now, Andrew. Let's see if I can skip through the commercial. A must-see classic Carlton Fisk waves walk-off home run To win game six of the 1975 World Series I just want to play this for you Because I think that the audio will probably be kind of cool So this is Carlton Fisk playing for the Red Sox I don't think he hit it towards the pesky pole I think he hit it towards the green monster But let's just take a listen, okay?

00:21:46 - 00:21:58 | Speaker 1:

Has a single and has walked twice And the wind blowing out There it goes, a long drive If it stays fair, home run. We will have a seven.

00:21:58 - 00:22:04 | Speaker 2:

Okay, that didn't pay off that much. But it was Carlton Fisk as a Red Sox, but he was hitting it to left field, not right field. Wow.

00:22:04 - 00:22:20 | Speaker 1:

Also, but that home run call was like, I hear more excited home run calls from the Mariners broadcasters in 2022 during a meaningless game in June. I hear more excited home run calls from Rick Riz when it's not a home run. God, I set you up for the perfect Rick Riz show.

00:22:20 - 00:22:23 | Speaker 2:

I put this on Nick for doing a baseball-related quiz.

00:22:24 - 00:23:07 | Speaker 1:

You knew what you were doing. Number two, which of the following items could you not find in the original Comiskey Park in Chicago before it was replaced in 1991? So multiple choice. Which one of these did Nick make up? An exploding scoreboard, a shower in the bleachers to cool off fans, a clock resembling a deep dish pizza, or a designated section for spitting tobacco on the ground. So one of those things was not there. One of those things was made up by our friend Nick. Which one did he make up? Exploding scoreboard, shower in the bleachers, clock that looks like a pizza, designated section for tobacco spitting.

00:23:08 - 00:23:18 | Speaker 2:

I think shower is made up. You think shower is made up? Everything else seems completely and totally possible at Comiskey.

00:23:18 - 00:23:40 | Speaker 1:

Weirdly, the most reasonable one is the fake one A clock resembling a deep dish pizza Oh, good one Let's see here According to the colorful White Sox winner Bill Veek Wasn't afraid to take risks with his team or his park to make money And headlines, the shower and the scoreboard were just the beginning Although, how does an exploding scoreboard work?

00:23:42 - 00:24:23 | Speaker 2:

It's just got a bunch of fireworks on it Oh, I see, sure Because when, like, yeah, Bill Veck had, and his son, too, I think, who might still be, was he the, no, that's a different team. Oh, is it Veck, not Veek? I don't know. You know what? I just grew up seeing that word, and I probably, just how my child brain pronounced it. But he was a really, he was like, you know, before the Savannah Bananas were on TikTok, you had Bill Veck just doing all kinds of crazy stunts. I feel like there was a stunt where he dropped a grapefruit out of an airplane and had one of his players catch it. Um, like, like there was all kinds of, all kinds of tomfoolery going on. A shower in the stands sounds like it could get weird fast.

00:24:24 - 00:24:47 | Speaker 1:

Well, it sounds, you know, it probably was those like, almost like one of those cold water mis... I mean, who knows what it was like, but you know what I mean? There are cold water misters at, um, I'm a cold water mister. Um, and like, you know, I do it all the different ways. At a concert or a festival or something. I mean, is it that different, you know? I'm just reading some of these Bill Veck stunts.

00:24:47 - 00:24:59 | Speaker 2:

He hired in 1951, he hired a man named Eddie Gadel, who was three foot seven inches tall, dressed him in a uniform and sent him up to pinch hit against the Tigers.

00:25:00 - 00:25:49 | Speaker 1:

gaitle crouch creating a cigarette size strike zone he walked on four pitches where a pinch runner took over for him this was in a the next day major league baseball banned what we would now describe as little people while veck basked in the publicity um let's see uh in 1947 veck signed larry doby for his cleveland indians um integrating the american league a year later he hired pitcher Leroy Satchel Paige legendary for his 21 year career on segregated teams and in Cuba that's the thing that's so wild about Satchel Paige is Satchel Paige was an incredible major league pitcher who pitched an entire career before he could get to the majors like the mind reels thinking of what Satchel Paige could have done if he played MLB his whole career okay I'll stop now there was you're

00:25:49 - 00:25:56 | Speaker 2:

unsure if it's Vec though I'm just I've never I don't know any of this I've never heard the name before because this was all kind of new to me but but it is Vec even though it's both

00:25:56 - 00:26:03 | Speaker 1:

Well, historynet.com, which is where I'm reading, says his name was Bill Veck, Veck as in Wreck. Okay, perfect.

00:26:03 - 00:26:23 | Speaker 2:

He titled his first memoir. And I was actually asking just for future reference in case I ever want to bring this up again. Okay, so I am on question number three. You are on question number three. You have gotten one right and one wrong. That was harder than I expected, Nick. Exactly the same. Okay, now, if you get this one right, we'll love you more. If you get this one wrong, we'll all love you a little bit less.

00:26:24 - 00:26:27 | Speaker 1:

It's helpful for me to know what the stakes are. That's what the stakes are.

00:26:27 - 00:26:50 | Speaker 2:

Undying love or your rejection. Which stadium features an apple behind the outfield fence that pops up each time a home run? Oh. I'm sorry. Each time a home team player hits a home run, an apple pops up beyond the outfield fence. Do you want the options? Yes, please. Shea Stadium, Bush Stadium, PNC Park, or Camden Yards?

00:26:51 - 00:27:07 | Speaker 1:

I'm going to guess, well, I'm going to say Shea Stadium, although I don't think they probably call it that anymore, right? I'm sure it has some kind of new— I think it's still Shea Stadium. Oh, really? It doesn't have a more corporate name? That's nice to hear.

00:27:07 - 00:27:23 | Speaker 2:

I thought, because weren't the—the Mariners were there this spring. Yeah, it's formerly known as William A. Shea Municipal Stadium was— Nice. Oh, wait, though. That's the old one, though. Anyway, I don't know. Maybe you're right. Maybe it's not called that.

00:27:23 - 00:27:24 | Speaker 1:

But I got it right at Shea Stadium.

00:27:24 - 00:27:50 | Speaker 2:

The important thing is, yes, you got that one right. We all love you a little bit more. Since 1980, the home run Apple has been popping out of its resting place behind the center field wall every time a Mets player hits a homer. When the team moved into – ah, Luke, here you go. I didn't have to Google. I just had to trust in Nick. When the team moved into Citi Field in 2009, the original Apple was installed just outside the park While a new twice as tall apple took its place

00:27:50 - 00:30:05 | Speaker 1:

Okay Can I clarify one thing Yes When I said it was Bill Veck who dropped the grapefruit from the airplane I was totally wrong Okay It's actually this is how the Grapefruit League Which is kind of I think basically like You know we have the Cactus League Yeah For our teams The Grapefruit League is I believe mostly in Florida It came The nickname Grapefruit League came from a 1915 publicity stunt That involves two of baseball's most famous characters Casey Stengel, who was the Brooklyn Dodgers outfielder at the time, and his manager, Wilbur Uncle Robbie Robinson. And they decided that it would be a cool stunt to have somebody fly in an airplane and drop a baseball to see if, I guess it was Casey Stengel, could catch it. The Dodgers thought that dropping a baseball from a plane to a player on the ground would be a fine idea. Stengel convinced Law to pilot her plane. That was the name of the pilot, who was a woman, interestingly enough, and drop a ball to the player waiting below. But no Dodger player came forward. Eventually, the team persuaded the good-natured Robinson, whoever that was, the Dutch office catcher's mitt. I guess that was the coach, right? So the coach is actually going to try to catch this ball. Uncle Robbie. But the problem was the pilot apparently forgot to bring the baseball with her. Once airborne, Law realized she had forgotten the baseball back in her hotel room. She did, however, have her lunch, which included a grapefruit. When she leveled off at 500 feet, she dropped the grapefruit, and the orb struck Robinson in his chest. Onlookers recalled that the Dodgers manager, now felled and covered in sticky red juices, thought he was mortally wounded. A dazed Robbie called out, help me, lads. I'm covered with me own blood. I don't know why he's a pirate for some reason. When the Dodgers rushed over to Robinson's side, they burst out laughing hysterically. The manager then realized he had been targeted by a friendly joke gone bad. Oh my god, I love that so much I know, I'm still, because I'm reading this on the fly I'm getting a bunch of the details wrong Because if it was a prank Then she meant to drop the grapefruit all along Which would Belive the idea that she forgot the baseball I don't know exactly what was going on But someone apparently dropped a grapefruit out of an airplane And it Busted up all over this guy And now it's called the grapefruit I love it And he thought he was He thought he was dying

00:30:05 - 00:30:06 | Speaker 2:

That's the funny part

00:30:06 - 00:30:09 | Speaker 1:

He thought he was holding his own organ So cold

00:30:09 - 00:30:19 | Speaker 2:

I mean think about a grapefruit That would be so upsetting Yeah it would If you didn't realize what it was Just the consistency The look of it It looks very much like You know Pink grapefruit You're covered in your own blood

00:30:19 - 00:30:21 | Speaker 1:

Do you like a grapefruit Luke?

00:30:21 - 00:30:45 | Speaker 2:

Do you like an ice cold grapefruit Out of the fridge? I like grapefruit juice On the occasion Like I'll get a greyhound sometimes instead of a mimosa but as far as just like eating grapefruit in the morning or whatever not really my scene i don't mind it but i don't like it enough to seek it out i feel also like it was a very 1950s thing oh like they even had spoons that were like serrated on one side so

00:30:45 - 00:31:13 | Speaker 1:

that you could eat your grapefruit when i was a kid yeah my mom would cut it you you cut it in a certain way so you're not you're kind of cutting it across the grain and then we had these little spoon knife things oh i see you've played knifey spoony before uh like you said with the serrated edge but nowadays i mean i still we always keep some sort of citrus in the fridge usually oranges but um gosh every now and then we have some especially pink grapefruit and you keep it cold enough and you pop it out i love it so much maybe i'll look into that i mean it seems like a

00:31:13 - 00:31:21 | Speaker 2:

now listen i know that there's a lot of natural sugar in it but it seems like a relatively healthy treat i mean it's a plant it grew in the ground sure i mean it's better than just like candy or

00:31:21 - 00:32:07 | Speaker 1:

Some Fruit Loops, which we now know how those are spelled. Okay. What stadium had an uphill slope in Centerfield known as Tails Hill? T-A-L. That was in Houston, I believe, right? That was Minute Maid Park. Oh. Is that? Minute Maid Park. No, that's in. Oh, wow. Right? Minute Maid Park. Your options were Comerica, Minute Maid Sky Dome, or Wrigley Field. And it says, the center field wall at Minute Maid Park is 436 feet from home plate. As if this doesn't pose enough difficulty to center fielders. The Astros. We'll see. Yeah. That's Houston. Yeah, that is Houston. Okay, good. Minute Maid Park in Houston. Okay, good. Built a 90-foot wide 30. Because I didn't know the name of it either. But isn't that. Yeah.

00:32:07 - 00:32:15 | Speaker 2:

Minute Maid Park, I thought, was in Florida on the subject of juice. But maybe not. That's Tropicana. That's the Tropicana. Right. Yeah.

00:32:15 - 00:32:18 | Speaker 1:

We get those confused. Excuse me. I think this has happened on the show before.

00:32:18 - 00:32:24 | Speaker 2:

I believe I was thinking of Enron Field, which is actually what it was, I believe, for a hot minute, which is hilarious.

00:32:24 - 00:32:29 | Speaker 1:

Wasn't it actually the—I thought it was actually the Astrodome when it had that hill. It was the Astrodome. Yeah, okay.

00:32:29 - 00:32:59 | Speaker 2:

And then I think they might have moved—I think the Astrodome, you know, was like the Kingdome. It was eventually probably imploded and replaced with a better facility, or supposedly a better facility, which for a period of time was called Enron Field. Right. I'm doing a story in Los Angeles where I'm going to a K-pop convention, and it's at Crypto.com Arena, a.k.a. what used to be Staples. And I saw that on the information for the event, and I was like, how long is that going to be Crypto.com? That's got real strong Enron vibes radiating off of it.

00:32:59 - 00:33:16 | Speaker 1:

I think I'm going to have to pick and choose some of these here. And I'm going to pick this next question because I actually – wait. I thought I had this right, but I guess I'm wrong. Which American League ballpark was the last To install lights Oh

00:33:16 - 00:33:31 | Speaker 2:

Well I would assume that would be Comiskey If it's the American League because it was Chicago right I thought because Wrigley didn't have them for the longest time Yeah So maybe I'm getting confused because Wrigley famously In my childhood they had to only play day games

00:33:31 - 00:33:49 | Speaker 1:

Exactly and that was a whole thing Right wasn't it about didn't they not install lights For the scheduling purposes Like somebody was holding there was a reason they didn't install lights and it wasn't just because of the lights it was because of they they didn't want to they didn't want to play night games right yeah i remember as a kid growing up

00:33:49 - 00:33:59 | Speaker 2:

that wrigley didn't have lights but that's a national league park so right but i don't know if that applies to comiskey so let me think i'm just gonna take a do you want me to list your

00:33:59 - 00:34:06 | Speaker 1:

options yes please wrigley yankee stadium fenway park or tiger stadium and we i'm gonna go tiger

00:34:06 - 00:34:10 | Speaker 2:

Stadium. I'm going to make a guess and say Tiger Stadium.

00:34:10 - 00:34:58 | Speaker 1:

You are absolutely right. Yes, I had put Wrigley here just to get the answer, but I was wrong. Unfortunately, nobody this is Nick writing here. Unfortunately, nobody knew exactly when to turn the lights on and start the game. The chilly Tuesday evening forced the Detroit and Philadelphia players to huddle in their dugouts. Many in the crowd of 54,000 drank copious amounts of hot coffee. Everyone waited for the sky to fade to black so the lights could take full effect. When the lights were finally flipped on at 9.29 p.m., a brief silence fell over the assemblage, followed by a collective ooh. Wow. There you go. Which ballpark had a streak of 11 full seasons without a rainout? Oh, wow. Here are your options. Yeah, what are my options? Veteran Stadium.

00:34:58 - 00:34:59 | Unknown:

I don't know where that is.

00:35:00 - 00:37:57 | Speaker 1:

Philadelphia, right? Is that Philadelphia? PNC Park, Dodger Stadium, or Forbes Field? I am thinking Dodger's Stadium, just based on climate, would be the most likely answer. I am thinking you are right, my friend. Do you want to go out on top, or do you want one more? I want to go out on top, which is why I'll get one more and get it wrong, and then spend the rest of the day beating myself up. Oh, this is fun. What stadium has a giant slide that the mascot slides down after home runs? Oh, this is semi-familiar. Can you give me the possibilities? I can. Globe Life Park, Miller Park, Coors Field, or Target Field? I want to go to Target Field, by the way. Huh. Yeah, that would be really fun. By the way, the other day, well, a while ago now, after the All-Star game, byron buxton was praising julio rodriguez and it made me made my heart grow three sizes it was like you love to see it um uh see to this the to answer this of course i should have quit while i was ahead because now i have zero idea it really comes down to who has a fun mascot because the mascot's going to be going on the slide i mean there are no not fun mascots right like like it would be great if one team just had a mascot really somber just just like daria yeah now okay in milwaukee famously there is the sausage race right that the mascot engages in okay yeah um so i'm gonna say that's their shtick so i'm gonna eliminate milwaukee uh target would be a twin i guess is that target field would be yeah the twins but i'm wondering i don't even know what their mascot oh what is the mascot oh i see what you're saying i which one of these was milwaukee by the way oh miller park is milwaukee yeah okay um yeah that makes sense and and so i don't know and then what are my other two options globe life i don't even know which one globe life is twins mascot is tc bear for some reason it's just a bear it's not that much different no offense peace and love twins fans but get a better mask it's not as swole as the moose um globe life park miller park coors field or target field i'm gonna say coors field because that's funny you know the the rockies have probably been around for 25 years now but they still feel like a new team to me yeah sure of course and i'm going to be like well they'd probably put a slide and that's kind of nouveau that's kind of like like famously in um i think in arizona for the d-backs whatever that stadium is there they have hot tubs or they had hot tubs or a swimming pool or something and i remember that just being like seeming very kind of nouveau so i'm going to guess um that it's uh the where the colorado rockies play isn't it amazing that you have a team and your nickname is the d-backs like it just i mean Maybe I'm the one drawing all the dirty pictures, but what is just an ugly nickname? And I don't even mean that. I'm not trying to insult fans of that team, but just from a name.

00:37:58 - 00:40:56 | Speaker 1:

Luke, I am here to say that after answering that question, we all love you a little bit less. A little bit less. You eliminated the right answer right away. It was Miller Park. Apparently, Bernie Brewer parties harder than just about any other mascot. And he's certainly the only one who's been approved to drink and slide. He does his thing in Miller Park. I am not surprised. Wisconsin perennially leads the nation in alcohol consumption per person. And that includes mascots. So that would that would check out. In fact, it's the mascots that really get those numbers up. Yeah, right. It's mostly mascots that are drinking and then they do that race. Well, thank you, Nick. That was really fascinating. That was very fun for me. Yeah, I'm sorry we didn't get through them all. And I know that Nick wanted some Tropicana field representation there because he's back in Florida. He's Nick from Florida again, I believe. Yeah, I think Nick's back in Florida. Oh, good. Nature is healing. Nature is healing, exactly. Everything is returning to it. I think, doesn't he work for the TROP? I think he does. Oh, maybe so. I think, yeah, I think some sort of guest services or something along those lines. Nick, I'm sorry, I don't have your actual job title. Either way, we're thinking of you. But we are pronouncing your last name correctly for once. Yeah, exactly. So let's call that a W for everybody. All right, let's thank some daily donors. These wonderful, generous folks are making TVTL possible with their financial support. We really do appreciate folks like Brock Goodman in Santee, California. Michael Havens over there in Tumwater, Washington. as well as Jessica Lucas in Haddonfield, New Jersey. I wonder if the Cowboys would have responded negatively if Pace Picante was from New Jersey. I feel like they would have been maybe slightly less murderous about it. Not psyched, but less lynchy. Uh-huh, right. New York City was, even then, there was a real urban-rural divide. Right, right. Whereas New Jersey is the garden state. New Jersey actually has a lot of farmland. My mom swears they grow the sweetest corn there. My mom always was raving about New Jersey corn when I was growing up. Thanks, Jessica, for your support. Also, thanks to Andrea Carter in beautiful Kalispell, Montana. Katie Harnish is in Seattle, Washington. And then Barbara Aerosmith in Indianola, Washington. Our friend, Barb Aerosmith, who's been around since the earliest days of this show. Thanks, Barb, for your continued support. Thanks to everybody on today's list of daily donors for making the show possible. We would not be here without you. All right, Luke, what do you say? Call it a day? Call it a week?

00:40:57 - 00:42:10 | Speaker 1:

I say we, yeah, I say we put this one in the bank. What did Chick Hearns used to say? The jello's jiggling, the refrigerator light, something about close the refrigerator door. Like when the Lakers would have a game salted away, Chick Hearn would say something about the jello is jiggling. Oh, I did not know that. I'm going to just look this up really quick and then probably launch on another 45-minute conversation. Let's see. The door's closed, the lights are out, the eggs are cooling, the butter's getting hard, and the jello's jiggling. I love that. So there you go. Thanks for listening, everybody. We'll be back here on Monday with some more TBTL summer games. So we'll see you then. Until then, have a great weekend. Stay safe, take care of yourselves, and please remember, no mountain too tall. And good luck to all. I should not have brought up baseball. I understand. My mistake. My mistake. You got to know your crowd. Power out.
