Well, hello, good morning, and welcome, everyone, to a Wednesday edition of TBTL Summer Games Edition. God, I love that intro tape so much. Sometimes we have intro tape on the show that's so good. I just think maybe that's what the show should be, just playing audio from I Think You Should Leave. Did I mention my name is Luke Burbank? Did I mention my friend Andrew Walsh is right over there? He's no Roy Donk, but he did appear on the Colgate Hour as well. Good morning. Good morning.

Yeah, I love the fact that there are some things that are obviously totally made up in that, but then there are other things that are real. Like that Munsters theme song, I think, is a real thing, right? Because it's like a surf. I heard somebody else coincidentally talking about that in earnestness on another podcast recently, talking about the Munsters theme song being like a surf guitar thing. Now we're getting pulled off of Spotify. Oh, my gosh. You've done it again. You've done it again.

Now, no offense, because I don't want to say anything too controversial, because, of course, summer games, this is the time for people to relax, to float in the kiddie pool, to enjoy everything that's good and great about summer. And controversy, or controversy, as maybe they would say, nowhere, does anybody say that? First of all, the first way I said it made no sense, but I was trying to think of how they say it on the BBC. Right. Controversy?

It's not, I think you're close, but I don't think that's quite it. I don't think that's my brain is all in a pretzel now, but now I'm very much on edge. You need to finish this thought because I don't know if you're going to offend me or the world at large.

The Addams Family theme song pales in comparison to the Munsters theme song. And they're basically, they were kind of the, I feel like they were the Coca-Cola and Pepsi of, like, shows, black and white TV shows about weird families that were very goth before that was a term. And, like, but I, it's, that's a hot take because people do love snapping their fingers during the Addams Family theme song. That's, they're creepy and they're kooky, they're all together, ooky, or whatever the lyrics are. The Addams Family, da-da-da-da, snap, snap. But I love surf guitar And I think the Munsters theme song slaps

have mentioned this on tbtl a couple of months ago when this all happened but um a while back i was driving to a friend's house and i passed a yard sale and so um i had to stop and i did and it was like three o'clock on a saturday the problem is i never get my day started on a weekend before like i don't know two so i'm terrible at finding good things at yard sales you're getting there when

all the good stuff is gone and basically at this point they're just selling you a bag for a dollar and saying put anything you want in it get it out of here exactly i mean they're giving away free bags of broken glass at this point so

Anyway, they are getting ready to close down, but I do a quick swing through this small garage sale, but a nicely appointed garage sale. And in the back, there's a fella, and he's got a little booth set up, almost a quasi-professional little booth. And I see that he's got all kinds of, I think, just baseball trading cards, like unopened packs from all kinds of time, but also just actual cards he's just selling at price or whatever. And I asked him what's going on. I don't know. It doesn't matter. It was like his sister-in-law's yard sale or something. So he was helping out and then was going to sell. He was like a collector who I think also might have run a shop at some point or maybe currently runs a shop. But what he had on that table were these packs of cards, hand-selected, handmade packs of cards with 25 cards in each pack. and they are collections that he put together of former Mariners players or I guess Mariners players from like the late 80s through the early 90s. I'm going to say like 89 through 93. Now, as you know, I have in my older age have become a baseball fan and a Seattle Mariners fan, but I did not grow up with baseball and I certainly didn't grow up with the Mariners, so I don't know who any of these people are. I know Dave Valley is an announcer now, you know, And I know that he probably played during this period. And who's the catcher who's on the broadcast team? Well, Dave Valley was a catcher. Oh, I'm sorry. We have another player. Oh, Bill Kruger, the pitcher. You have Kruger. Actually, there's a couple more that I'm thinking of. But anyway. Dan Wilson comes out now. Wilson, yes. What position did he play? Not the Dan Wilson from Semi-Sonic, although. Did anybody think that?

A lot of people did.

Wait, Dan Wilson wasn't a catcher? I thought Dan Wilson was a catcher. Oh, he was. Okay, that's the catcher I was thinking of, yeah.

Well, yeah, I think of him as a relative noob to the broadcast team because he – well, first of all, he played in the 2000s, and I just absolutely love Dan Wilson. It is also the name of the guy from Semisonic. And what's funny is I think they're both from Minnesota. I believe Dan Wilson played for the Golden Gophers and the Dan Wilson baseball player. And one last thing, if I could just say this very quickly.

Yeah, please.

When my sisters and my ex-wife and even my younger brother, DFTB, worked at Cafe Lago, Dan Wilson would regularly come in. The baseball player, not the closing time guy. Okay, good. Just keep clarifying. Yeah. He would come in. He would drive. I think he and his family, his wife, they lived over on the east side. Maybe they lived down in Montlake, but he would come over regularly and pick up to-go orders of Cafe Lago pasta, and he was always a real sweetheart. And one time I was there waiting for probably to pick up my ex-wife. And Dan Wilson came in, and I had him sign something for Sammy and David. Oh, nice. And it was kind of cool because then later David was an adult and worked there, and I believe Dan Wilson would still come in. Now, flash forward to, I don't know, six months ago, Addy and I go out. Maybe it was for my birthday or something. We go out to this place called Single Shot on Capitol Hill that is as hip as a Seattle restaurant gets. And I only know about it because my hip daughter lives on Capitol Hill, and she's young and hip. So we go to this really cool restaurant, and we're sitting there. And who's sitting at the bar with his lovely wife? Dan Wilson, not the guy from Semisonic, although that would have been amazing if the Semisonic guy was there.

But I was like, this Dan Wilson, don't miss. Like, it would be so easy for him as an ex-baseball player who, again, I don't know why I presume that he lives on the east side, But that just tends to be where a lot of these athletes live in these kind of pretty large houses in these, you know, communities that are kind of out in the ex-urban environment, etc. But like he and his wife on a date at this very cool Capitol Hill restaurant on a Saturday night, it just made me so happy. Just so much more engaged with the Seattle environment than you might expect from a from a retired athlete.

Yeah. I'm looking at the food here. It does look fancy. It looks absolutely delicious. I would eat almost anything here. I'm trying to figure out the space, though. where where is this is this uh because i don't remember when i lived on the hill it's right by

these cards with you now i bought six packs luke they were one dollar a pack for 25 cards or if you buy six you could get six for five dollars so i spent i splurged i spent the full five dollars to get 150 cards, and these are all cards from this era, late 80s, early 90s, Fleer, Donruss, Tops, what have you. Now, I don't want you to get too hung up on this. We have a real quiz we're getting to later on in the show, and also we can do this at the top of the show tomorrow as well. Yes, yes, yes. You're not on trial here. You're not getting points. So we have so many of these cards that if you don't recognize the name, just move on. We'll keep going until we get to one that you have a story about.

I want to tip my cap to our caps collectively. I want to don our caps and then doff our caps to Defector and their great segment, Let's Remember Some Guys, which is who we're doing kind of a poor person's version of that right here.

Yes, although I will say this was my idea, and I had no idea that they were already doing it. So we did come by this honestly, although we also rip shit off all the time. In fact, as you said, tomorrow's show is just going to be an episode of I Think You Should Leave. I want to play the T.C. Tuggers one, please. They're not a joke.

Okay. Dave Henderson. Oh, Hendu. This is a great card.

Hendu. First of all, one of the most quality diastema situations in baseball. Wonderful gap in his teeth, which I felt very connected to him emotionally as a kid with a gap in his teeth. Really, I think one of the more memorable things that Hendu did was not even as a Mariner, although he was a great Mariner center fielder for many years and just a total charmer with the media, like everybody loved Hendu. But he, when he was playing, I think, for the Yankees, he hit a home run that bounced off of Jose Canseco's head in the playoffs. You've told me about that before. That's this guy? I think Hendu hit the home run where it was not going to be a home run. It was coming down in the park, and Jose Canseco leapt up to catch it, and the ball bonked off the top of Canseco's head and went over. Maybe he was a Red Sox. Did I say he was a Red Sox or a Yankee? I think maybe Hendu was playing for the Red Sox at this point and hit a home run, I think, off of Jose Canseco's head, which is just an incredible thing.

Now, I should mention that this is an older-looking card than most of these. I said this is, like, late 80s, early 90s. This looks like the card I have must be from the 1985 collection because it has his stats from 1981 through 1984 on this when he played the Mariner. So this is definitely a slightly earlier era than as advertised. He is from Bellevue, Washington, it says here, or at least that's where he made his home. I don't know if that's where he was from originally. It looks like he was born in California. But, yeah, this is actually a pretty sweet card.

It wasn't Hindu who hit it, Andrew. I knew it. Why was I trying to be? Martinez, Homer, aided by Canseco's head. Carlos Martinez. There was something. This is, again, we're not counting this. This is not for money. I'm not going to go into a shame spiral. But I was really convinced that there was, I think what happened was there was, because what I would do with Mariners is when they went to other teams, I would still keep track of them a little bit like I would note, you know, when an ex-Mariner was doing something and I was pretty sure that Henderson became a Boston Red Sox. He must have just hit an important home run in a game against, by the way, the bubbles is trying to send a fax in the back.

So young to even know the fax machine. No, let me just play you this. Martinez-Homer aided by Canseco's head. It's only one minute long. I just want to see if this must be what I was thinking of. I would have swore to God this was in the playoffs, but here we go. High fly ball, right field deep. Canseco back to the track. Look it up. It is. Oh, yeah. His head, it looked like. And over the top. The home run. That looked like it had Canseco at the top of the head. We'll have to check the replay.

It did.

It did. By the way, that was against the then Cleveland Indians. Oh, really? And Canseco was playing for the Rangers I had almost I had zero percent of the detail Right in that story Other than Canseco's head Jose Canseco did get bonked on the head

And that's the important thing All right I want to play I want to give you another one of these One more before we go to a break What do you know about manager Dick Williams

Oh the skipper Dick Williams He was one time Also the man He had a fierce gray mustache He certainly does I believe he might have been the manager that preceded Jim LaFever, of course, which created the I'm a LaFever Believer bumper stickers. Dick Williams was also a manager of the San Diego Padres at one time. I think maybe the year the Padres went to the World Series, which is why we thought it was cool that we were getting Dick Williams. He was a very stern guy from what I remember. And kind of like Chuck Cartier, he kind of had a sort of unremarkable, it seemed to me an unremarkable stint as the Mariners manager. When things got really spicy for the Mariners was when we got sweet Lou Piniella, who you may know as the spokesperson for Shag Senior Housing now.

that's right and whatever our favorite Trump impersonator who's now on SNL is also on that episode oh yeah yeah yeah I always blank on his name dude I follow him on Instagram I see his name every day every time I see it James Austin Johnson James Johnson Austin Johnson I think you're right absolutely okay Tig Notaro ever on TBTL comedy bang bang or both now i'm going both you're and we got a guest on this i don't remember we know that tig has been on tbtl tig was on tbtl even a couple of times in my era um do you remember by the way the time you and i were very newly friends when i believe tig was on tbtl but i don't think i was on that episode but we all met up you and me and our dates our significant others went to see TIG at, was it Chop Suey later that night?

Yeah, she was there for the People's Republic of Comedy, that kind of thing that they would put on, PROC. They had basically booked her to come up, and she did the show from Burbank Studios' Debajo. She sat in my basement with me. I can't remember if Jen was on that show, maybe remotely, like on an ISDN line or whatever we were doing at that time, But I just remember sitting in my kind of pretty sparsely decorated basement with Tig Notaro and then giving her a ride to her hotel after that. And and I mean, I thought she was really funny, but it would not have occurred to me that kind of to a degree superstardom that Tig Notaro would eventually enjoy both for her comedy and also like she's in a lot of movies now, too. And like action movies. I think she's in some kind of new Star Trek thing. Yeah, I think you're right. Like, things are really shaping up for old Tig Notaro, and well-deserved, because she's actually a lovely person who, I interviewed her for a TV thing, she's been on our show a bunch, she does a podcast on our network, so go Tig.

I think, I want to share two quick memories of that night, because first of all, I think it might have been one of your sister's birthdays, maybe your younger sister's birthday, well I guess most of them are younger, all of them, but, and I think we did go to Lago that evening before the show and i think and i i i don't think i've seen her more than once so this was i believe the same show where she near the beginning of her set made a joke about like the fairy system here and but like nobody in the audience got it because her whole joke was premised on this idea that like who takes a fairy anywhere but the thing is everybody in the audience is like yeah we take this is seattle all the time it's a big part of getting around and i remember it was actually really uh it was funny and a very humid moment and she's like like because it was like so awkward like nobody laughed and she's like the map it just ends at the water and everybody's like yeah fairies like what and anyway that's where tig uh the joke that i remember hearing

for the first time there by tig which then has become really kind of a calling card is the taylor dane me too yep exactly and i was in freaking hysterics it was it was such a good

joke it's such a good story i wish i could figure out what the date was because i want to know if i'm conflating that birthday but i know that we went to chop suey one time after um celebrating your sister's birthday at uh that sounds like that would have been probably on the same thing so tig notaro both both we said both nailed it correct says jake tig notaro has appeared on both shows multiple times over the years okay here we go here we go oh even i know this one well I know half of this one Chris Gethard

is this the person that you explain to me all the time no I'm just laughing because I'm having a memory of so this is tbtl right uh definitely tbtl and i doubt comedy bang bang so i'm gonna say tbtl only jeff probst is the host of survivor and when jeff probst came on the show by phone he was an absolute delight oh great we he was like a friend of a friend is how it came together and my friend i forget who it was said oh yeah jeff's a great guy here's his number call him he'd love to be on the show Now, at this time, Addie was probably 11 or 12 and loved Survivor. Like, it was her favorite show. And so Jeff Probst, after we did the interview, he recorded a message for Addie. And I actually have it here. Do you want to hear it? Yes, please. Yeah, yeah.

Hey, Addie, this is Jeff Probst from Survivor. Just talking to your pop. And I want to say hello to you. And I hope you're enjoying this season of Survivor. rude or didn't know what they had gotten into that makes me so happy and i think he's dana gould's neighbor oh cool or before dana gould got divorced i think they lived across the street from each other because somehow that came up when i was interviewing dana gould but um but um jeff probes is from seattle originally like i don't know if he was born in the area but he was a local tv personality i think he was hosting a gardening show on the weekends and uh you know moved to la at some point and of course really really struck it big with that survivor show

which i think is still on well i think you're right because well first of all you're right that it's still on and you're right that he was only on tbtl and um it says here i have no shame before another mortal. You are correct. Probst was on TBTL in 2009.
