This is about consumer rights, and if they don't want to drink our delicious sodas, we do provide healthier options, like Water Zero. Oh, yes, let's talk about Water Zero.

00:00:10 - 00:00:17 | Speaker 2:

The name implies that there are zero calories, like most water, but in fact, it has 300 calories per serving.

00:00:18 - 00:00:29 | Speaker 3:

Isn't that misleading? The zero on the label refers to the amount of water in it, which is zero. If you want zero-calorie water, try Diet Water Zero Lite. It has only 60 calories.

All right, let's toss the ball around. All right, hello, good morning, and welcome, everyone, to a Monday edition of TBTL, the show that just might be too beautiful to live. It's a kind of magic. My name is Luke Burbank. I am your host. I won't trash talk. I won't be out there blowhard. Coming to you from the Hollywood Broadcast Center right here in Portland, Oregon, where it is. Today is September the 26th, and it's going to be 90 degrees today. I'm trying to. I feel warm and I'm levitating. i'm trying to enjoy this for what it is which is the last gasp of warm sunny beautiful weather even though oddly i am at this point we've been talking about this on the show a bit i'm sort of ready for fall i'm ready for sweater season i'm ready for um the you know things to cool down a little bit but i know that once we get into like the darkness, once it's like December, I would be wishing it could be 90 degrees here in Portland, Oregon, which it is going to be today, so I'll try to take full advantage of it. Hopefully you all will be able to take full advantage of episode 3779 in a collector's series.

00:02:29 - 00:02:30 | Speaker 2:

Let the fun begin.

00:02:31 - 00:04:30 | Speaker 5:

I got home last night from working on the project out at the house that I'm remodeling, and I was very excited to have my space age scientifically engineered robotic litter box for the cat i heard the jury's still out on science i actually can't decide 12 hours into it being operational if it's actually an improvement over my standard non-robotic litter box or not uh we'll probably talk about that also is the era of hit podcasts over for good you want to do a make-believe radio show in a room somewhere i'm telling you there's no money in that uh nick qua writing in vulture uh with the headline podcasting is just radio now which is kind of funny because this podcast was a radio show and now it's just a podcast and yet we always just operate as as if it is a radio show that's what we've been finally the rest of the industry has caught up with us and now podcasting is just radio again oh uh i saw this story bouncing around the internet some real sky jinks going on on a recent i believe it was um maybe united airlines flight sky jinks where uh somebody hacked into the intercom system and they could not figure out who was doing this how they were doing it But they were playing sounds over the intercom, and those sounds were very, very weird. And we have the tape of it because somebody was recording the whole thing on the flight, as we are now want to do, as people equipped with cell phones. We can do all that plus the emails and the emails with the help of this guy, the longest running Cobra of the show, maybe best known for his depictions of the tall ships. He is coming in hot today.

00:04:31 - 00:04:59 | Speaker 4:

The sexy goth bad boy is back at it again, ladies and gentlemen. He is Andrew Walsh, and he's joining me right now. Good morning, my friend. Good morning. I actually want to apologize for my energy level here at the top. It might actually serve me well. I feel like sometimes I come in with too frantic of an energy level. But you ever do this thing? I've been awake for quite some time. It's not one of those days where I kind of, I don't know, lollygagged around and then ran into my office too late.

00:05:00 - 00:05:04 | Speaker 1:

the show and i sound like i just woke up i've been up and working for a while but i literally

00:05:04 - 00:05:33 | Speaker 2:

just sort of forgot to drink coffee you ever do that it was right yeah i look at the probably only drink coffee about half the time honestly during the week are you serious yeah oh no kidding oh i thought you some mornings i wake up i think it honestly i think it has to do with if i'm a tad hungover or not like if i'm hungover i don't want coffee um i want water my body is screaming out for hydration um if i am not in any way hungover then i wake up screaming for coffee today i'm

00:05:33 - 00:06:15 | Speaker 1:

having coffee i'm proud to tell you oh nice so congratulations that's like the coffee slash alcoholism meter you'll be like hey that'll be like the key like hey luke you're drinking coffee and if not yeah i know i better give you a wide berth um yeah no i don't think it's that i mean i drink coffee every morning it was just a strange situation it was sitting here in a thermos next to me, but I'm just working away, you know, just toiling, just doing the Lord's work, listening to voicemails of people who have found money or their friends who found gift cards, still have a lot of those. This is inspiring a lot of stories from the listeners, by the way, the found money topic. Maybe we'll get to some of those later today. Maybe we won't. That's the type of promotion you get when I haven't had enough coffee.

00:06:16 - 00:06:21 | Speaker 2:

So you made the coffee, you poured the coffee, you had the coffee.

00:06:21 - 00:07:21 | Speaker 1:

You just chose not to avail yourself. I didn't even choose. It chose me. It didn't choose me. My little routine is at night, so we get a whole bean coffee, and we have a little burr-less grinder on the counter. And so every night I grind up enough beans for a pot of coffee. I put the grounds into the filter basket, into the machine. I put the water into the machine, and then I just let it sit. I used to set the timer. Now I don't set the timer. Genevieve wakes up before me, especially on the days that she has to go into the office. So she'll hit go on that bad boy. And then we always have coffee ready for us. So today I had the coffee. It was in a thermos. Like I said, I'm working down here alone. So I poured myself a thermos of coffee and brought an empty mug down here. And then right as I was dialing you up, I looked over and my mug remained empty. And so anyway, here we are. I've now I've I've slogged down like a cup since we've been talking. You can probably hear it in my voice. I'm already I'm already feeling the effect. So I think the show is going to be better now.

00:07:22 - 00:08:39 | Speaker 2:

You're making up for lost time. I'm making up for lost time. I'm going to start talking like this. On the subject of coffee. A couple of things. One, I think I may have to go back to actually measuring how much like how many scoops of coffee grounds I am putting into the machine. Because a few years ago, maybe it was right like during the early part of the pandemic. you know we were all just just trying our best to get through and as I say on the show a lot it really changed all of us and one of the ways I think it changed me was I was like am I going to continue just measuring out scoops of coffee grounds or am I going to trust that I can eyeball I know how big the pile is I've been making this pile in the you know coffee filter for however many years I bet I can just pour it right out of the bag into there and it'll be about the right amount. And so I did, I started doing that, but at some point I think I lost my way because about half the time when I make coffee, it is wildly bitter. I think I tend to overdo it and, or sometimes it's, it's a little weak. I just don't have it figured out. And when I was working on the house with my dad last week, he was making the coffee in the morning and he is a very by the numbers guy. And so he was, I noticed he was measuring it out and I noticed it was way

00:08:39 - 00:08:59 | Speaker 1:

better that's interesting i have a question for you without putting you on the spot too much the coffee that you have at your house in washington the one you're working on is that good coffee because i know that you drink the good broadcast coffee when you're home in portland do you have the similar type of beans or is it very i was extremely proud of my dad

00:08:59 - 00:10:07 | Speaker 2:

of walt b i wish i could find his uh trademarked where's my royalty audio because of course that's the it's the audio that's captured the imagination of an entire fan base really but anyway my dad um who shows up at the house with the most random assortment of food andrew when i tell you he had like a can of off-brand peaches okay from a from like mrs mcgillicuddy's or something like a a brand like my parents have a lot of um toiletries in their house many of them that appear to be mostly focused on the african-american body experience um and other things where it's products that i'm not personally that familiar with or it's something that looks similar to a known product but it's just not or like deodorants that i think have been discontinued hundred of years ago like ban deodorant or arid or like any extra dry arid extra dry they can't afford

00:10:07 - 00:10:26 | Speaker 1:

extra dry i feel like that's like ross they get arid it'll do arid that'll do um i feel like arid extra dry it's like ross dress for less i can't just say arid without saying arid extra dry it must have been a jingle i think it was a jingle growing up i definitely know it as arid extra dry

00:10:26 - 00:11:31 | Speaker 2:

as well but like so the food because my dad is just the most the most low maintenance person on the planet he is so different than i am he just requires so little to be happy and he is just a generally happy guy um so whereas for me if we're staying up there for a few days the food situation is paramount i'm like okay i'm making a list this is what we're gonna have for dinner on this night and i'm gonna go get these fixings and we've got this whole plan going and we're gonna a barbecue i was very touched he ate a veggie burger with me one of the nights because we didn't have any meat burgers and he was like that's fine veggie burger's great and he enjoyed it but anyway even though he eats meat normally but he just brought up a cardboard box that had like what's isn't it is it a simpsons joke where they have like it's like canned eel or something i feel like somebody goes to the store and all they have is just the oddest canned products that you would typically not eat like cream of it's like cream of something and canned eel i don't

00:11:31 - 00:11:36 | Speaker 1:

remember that joke specifically but i i'm following you can imagine down yeah that was more or less

00:11:36 - 00:11:50 | Speaker 2:

the box my dad brought up and then also had like three child size like you put in a child's lunch drinkable containers of danimal yogurt oh god with a cartoon on the outside just the thought

00:11:50 - 00:11:57 | Speaker 1:

of drinkable yogurt makes me so like right i know that's part that's just not your thing i was just

00:11:57 - 00:12:58 | Speaker 2:

struck by how juvenile the packaging was like this was very clearly a product that was made for children to have in their lunch and they'll be excited because they pull it out and it's got a cool cartoon on it and it's called danimals this is three danimals a can of mrs mckillicuddy's peaches uh some like like new fairfield clam chowder oh new england nope not new england clam chowder it's one neighborhood over clam chowder just the most random stuff is what he brought um i found out uh too that i think my mom must just have some store that she likes to go to that really specializes in discounted children's food because remember the time when we were doing a big, fancy Easter meal when Carrie and I lived in Port Townsend, and we really did it up and dressed up and had real nice settings and tablecloth and all that, and my mom brought Go-Gurt, also a child's yogurt product.

00:12:58 - 00:13:00 | Speaker 1:

Not that far from the Danimal, it sounds like.

00:13:00 - 00:13:08 | Speaker 2:

No, they're definitely in the same genre as far as a super sweet, drinky kind of food

00:13:08 - 00:13:20 | Speaker 1:

that kids go wild for that my my mother brought to a formal dinner but anyway i knew this guy in college he was a danimal in the sack apparently according to all my all my friends right i was

00:13:20 - 00:15:00 | Speaker 2:

trying to make a i don't know what in the streets a danimal in the sheets but i couldn't i didn't have another i couldn't come up with another thing so then i just sort of failed on it here's my point in all of this one i actually really mean this as a high compliment to my father who i love and I've been having such a really fun time just kind of hanging with him and then at night we'll make a fire that I have one of those little solo stoves and we just like sit out and we looked at Jupiter the other night which I believe tonight Jupiter is going to be so close to the earth it's like it will not be this close again for many years and you could actually even see some of its moons if you're in the right place and you've got you know some binoculars or something point is we're having a great time I love how low maintenance my dad is but oddly enough he brought stumptown coffee good coffee because the thing with my parents is they really only care about one thing in life when it comes to comfort and that is their coffee they have an espresso machine they were the first people i ever knew to have an espresso machine when there were like when starbucks was just a twinkle in howard schultz's butthole they were like having an espresso machine in our little crappy rental house with like no frills except oddly an espresso machine they drink like three or four cups of coffee a day and it's a whole ritual it's like my dad's got to grind the beans he's got to make the thing and then my mom waits you know it's like it's like their thing so my dad got good coffee and i was very happy about that because i was worried i mean of course broadcast would be the best that's our friend barry's coffee but stumptown is also pretty good i was expecting him to show up with like U-ban or something.

00:15:00 - 00:15:21 | Speaker 1:

thing you know or or dan and coffee potentially right exactly it's uh dan and drinkable coffee is actually what they call it which is it's the fact that they have to call it drinkable is a red flag for it's called tasters acceptance i guess that's that's a hardcore pacific northwest thing i know your mom is from the east coast where's your dad hail from originally he is he

00:15:21 - 00:15:27 | Speaker 2:

grew up in primarily in los angeles oh yeah right okay and then uh did his last two years of high

00:15:27 - 00:17:14 | Speaker 1:

school in missoula montana okay yeah but they really adopted that that pacific northwest culture early on because you know you guys are kind of you know you're you're not like you said you're not rich folk in the in the 80s and 90s growing up here in seattle but emphasis on the coffee maker we were visiting our friends in bend and kind of a similar situation they don't live high on the hog but they have they love their coffee and they have this machine you know it's it's large for a coffee machine based on my standards it's very modern looking and it's one of those you know i can't explain it it sits on the counter i can't quite picture it in my own living space but man it does seem convenient because yes it can make espresso and espresso drinks and and what have you but it also just makes one cup of coffee at a time but it's not like a k cup situation you put good beans in there and this machine grinds them up itself and but then it just makes one cup of coffee at a time which as i say that out loud i wonder you know i don't know if that would be the best thing for me because like i say i do like to make a pot of coffee and then bring the majority of it down here into my studio and kind of have it here during the show but like that's kind of a nice convenience you make one cup at a time but it's not that kind of first of all shitty coffee that is killing the environment with a little k-cups are people still you know i wonder if that's one thing somebody somebody extrapolate on that um everybody's talking about the impacts of the pandemic the long-term impacts i wonder if we're seeing out to all the coffee lovers of the world less uh k cup usage since we don't have people like hanging out in office places as much as we used to you know what i mean like that with so many office places like you know the last two radio stations i worked at you would just go in and use a k cup for your cup of coffee and it was just like just think about what one organization Must go through in plastics At the end of the day

00:17:14 - 00:17:52 | Speaker 2:

I don't understand And my guess would be This has now become the case somewhere Why don't they just make Those K-cups out of something compostable I mean Yeah So much of the So much of the other stuff I know and people are going to email in and say These are the places that do that And also you can buy one of those baskets Which I had for a while Yeah, yeah And then you put your grounds in the basket It puts the grounds in the basket or it gets the hose. Breakfast is so weird at your place, I gotta say. It is, but it's just a family tradition, and I choose to continue to honor that. We get out some Mrs. McGillicuddy's peaches.

00:17:53 - 00:17:56 | Speaker 1:

And then it puts the coffee in the basket. I'm sure those are like the finest peaches

00:17:56 - 00:17:59 | Speaker 2:

that you can get in southern Manitoba.

00:17:59 - 00:18:09 | Speaker 1:

Did any of them have the WooHoo sticker? I didn't know about WooHoo deals until you talked about them on the show. Now I go into a grocery store and I see the WooHoo deals all over the place. I didn't see any WooHoo stickers,

00:18:09 - 00:18:36 | Speaker 2:

But I promise you that's just because these items were purchased from a different place, right? Like the other thing is my dad and I went over to Rainier, Oregon to get some dinner one night. And I said, oh, we can go to Rainier, Oregon. They have a Mexican place. It's on the river. It's kind of cool. And he goes, oh, yeah, they've got a great grocery outlet there. And I was like, how do you know that? How does he know that? And mom have an encyclopedic knowledge of where every grocery outlet is.

00:18:36 - 00:19:00 | Speaker 1:

Well, I don't want to dunk on your dad or his lifestyle, but out of curiosity, what is the status of these foodstuffs, these Oregon Trail style foodstuffs that were brought in a cardboard box down to your place? Like, are we half out of the Dannon yogurt at this point? What's the status of the Danimals, Andrew? Oh, sorry, Danimals.

00:19:00 - 00:19:59 | Speaker 2:

Use the proper name. Sorry. I believe that he consumed a total of one Danimal. okay meaning there are still two in the refrigerator um he uh i don't think he had any of the soup stuff um uh because that was all still there and i said do you want to take that back home i'll just leave it here for next time i was like okay um i had picked up some sandwich fixings for him some turkey and cheese and lettuce and that sort of thing and i think he made himself a sandwich one night um but yeah a lot of it a lot of the stuff he brought ended up just staying he did bring some heart healthy cheerios which i put a photo of this up on twitter i will i know that this is i'm the last person to sort of arrive at this realization but i just find the absolute accessibleness of iced tea in this day and age the the the the the rubbing down of any kind of sharp edges on

00:20:00 - 00:20:11 | Speaker 1:

iced tea to the point where he's on the back of the heart healthy Cheerios box pointing at a cartoon B and it's got a QR code so that you can work on your heart health with coach

00:20:11 - 00:20:34 | Speaker 2:

iced tea and assistant coach buzz the B oh iced tea the rapper the musical performer and actor the musical performer I Luke I had I really was thinking like dude you need to drink more coffee think about myself I'm like why am I not following the softening down of iced tea like are you about to go on a rant about flavored iced teas i had no okay i am

00:20:34 - 00:20:42 | Speaker 1:

talking about the og original gangster the auteur of the song og original gangster ice tea i see he

00:20:42 - 00:20:48 | Speaker 2:

is now hawking heart smart cheerios and there is a picture of him i mean the reason i say i'm the

00:20:48 - 00:22:01 | Speaker 1:

last person to get this memo is because of course he's been on like those procedurals for years and years it's been many many years since ice tea was evincing any sort of like i'm a tough guy don't mess with me vibe i mean i guess in a way he does on those procedurals but like ice tea was was was just embraced by middle america a hundred years ago so that's not really news it just there was something about him on the back of this cheerios box with a big smile on his face pointing at a cartoon b about how he was going to help coach me through being heart healthy it's so far from the I remember when Ice-T was When police unions And by the way It takes a lot for me To have any sympathy for a police union But it was like I think Ice-T put out A song called Cop Killer And it was a big scandal Because all the police unions Were like we're not going to send our police To provide security at concerts That Ice-T is playing I just remember him being a controversial figure When I was a kid And now he's standing Now he's pointing at a cartoon bee Trying to help me with heart health It's so far from what I remember The iced tea of my youth being

00:22:01 - 00:23:19 | Speaker 2:

I am going to ruin this so much Which really bothers me Because it was such a good tweet I really do I like it I don't like flavored iced tea I remember you and I were doing Our week of special broadcasts A couple of years ago From an undisclosed location We're, you know, during our fundraiser and is in the wake of George Floyd's murder. Right. And there is obviously that was that that was what everybody was was talking about in our society at the time. And an iced tea tweeted something out that was, you know, I obviously in support of George Floyd and his family and probably something very critical of the police. And I don't remember what it was exactly. And somebody who clearly was not familiar. This is the amazing thing. He has a whole generation of people who just know him as a cop on TV. Right. And somebody wrote in like, I'm not like, I can't believe you would you would say that I'm not going to I'm not going to I'm not going to watch any of your TV shows anymore. I can't believe this is coming from you. Some sort of anti-cop sentiment. And he tweeted out a brilliant thing, something along the lines, did you think I was saying cop hugger or some reference to his old body count song? But it was so much better than cop hugger. And I can't remember what it was. But, man, I think I fell in love with him that day.

00:23:20 - 00:25:25 | Speaker 1:

I mean, it's complicated because I also don't think that it's a good idea for people to direct for anyone to direct violence at anybody, even at the cops. although i think unfortunately the history in this country uh is that the use of force is generally running in one direction i saw a picture now okay now i guess we're just talking about this um i saw a picture on twitter of a extremely up armored like a vehicle that you could drive literally into mordor like you could drive it right down the throat of mount doom oh they should have done that and then be fine and like and and you know just like hang out there and like watch you know the football game on your phone or something like the most unbelievably armored thing ever and it was at i believe ohio state university it belongs to the ohio state university police department the ohio and it was i believe the ohio state university police department was tweeting out proudly this picture of this like war fighting machine and the caption was why exactly does the ohio state university police department need to own a vehicle like this and i mean i think that just typifies the militarization of our police i mean most of our listeners already know about this stuff we don't have to get into it but um that is an interesting thought that like ice tea has been ice tea has been out of the controversy game for so long that there are people who well there was i mean i brought this up when we were talking about leo dicaprio um but that you know for a lot of us we think of leo dicaprio as the kid from titanic but to he's you know he's our age and so to a younger generation in fact the generation he appears to tend to date he's the guy from the revenant yeah right which is a totally different view of leo dicaprio than we have of this just like impossibly hunky up-and-comer and it's like oh the guy who pulled himself across the tundra on one finger did you see that movie i did it was really really

00:25:25 - 00:25:51 | Speaker 2:

intense yeah i've never seen it i i i wasn't sure if it was one of those movies that everybody sort of talks about in references but nobody's actually seen it or i i didn't mean that in a snarky way i just honestly i haven't seen that movie i don't know if genevieve has seen that movie maybe she has but i don't know if i really need to see it it's like one of those things where i haven't heard anybody say it's a good movie i've just heard people say buckle up it's an experience i'm like yeah maybe i should just like i don't know play a gardening video game i thought it

00:25:51 - 00:26:57 | Speaker 1:

was good in that i just thought well i saw it in a theater maybe that helped and it was just i thought that the cinematography was really interesting i mean it's a lot of the movie there's no dialogue because he's just in the absolute middle of nowhere freezing cold conditions trying to stay alive so it's a lot of just i think from a filmmaking standpoint i found it kind of interesting and entertaining um but yeah it's just it's just basically a guy who's left for dead it's based on a true story apparently and just now what i found also interesting about that movie was all the reports of how actually terrible it was for them to film the movie despite the fact that they've got heated trailers and generators and and warming tents and this is a major hollywood production involving one of the most famous actors on planet earth so you know that it's like they've got all the equipment up there they've got all the star wagons they've they need uh etc and even with that being the case it was miserable for everybody involved because to be outdoors at all was to be almost

00:26:57 - 00:29:12 | Speaker 2:

freezing to death you know what I'm excited about as far as theatrical releases are concerned and I don't know if this has ever come up on the show before I feel like it probably did a long long long long time ago coffee's kicking in maybe when I was newer on the show but when people talk about the movie Fletch or the movies Fletch and then Fletch Lives, right? Those are the Chevy Chase vehicles. People know them as very slapsticky, kind of private I.E., although he's actually an investigative reporter, Fletch is in those books and movies. But, you know, they're known as these really almost like kind of campy at this point, but very over-the-top funny movies from the 80s starring Chevy Chase. But at some point in my young adulthood, I realized that this was a series of novels. In fact, I think I stumbled on them just because I liked going to garage sales in New Hampshire, And I think I stumbled on the book Fletch or maybe one of the many sequels. And this was probably my first foray into the sort of pulp fiction world that I still like to dip into in the summer times. And I was like, oh, these books about Fletch, it's a series by Gregory McDonald that were written, I want to say, in the 70s and 80s. But they're not like the movie. I think a lot of people don't know that. They're not slapsticky. The character of Fletch is dry and sardonic and there's a humor to these books, but they're mostly kind of pulpy investigations by this loose cannon investigative reporter for the L.A. Times. Right. And there's a whole series of these books. And I really even though I loved the movies growing up and I still like those movies, I love these books as almost like a secret little world that so many people didn't realize that Fletch was a little bit more serious in this in this campy way or in this pulpy way. And now, and I'm sure you know this I heard recognition in your voice They are releasing a new Fletch film I think it's of the first sequel, Fletch 1 Although I could be wrong about that, W-O-N But Jon Hamm is reprising the character of Fletch And I think we're finally going to see Like a Fletch movie that is more reflective Of the books themselves Not without humor, because Jon Hamm is I think a brilliant comedic mind But I think there will be some humor in there But it won't be this like over the top Look at Chevy Chase wearing a funny nose And getting a prostate exam sort of humor

00:29:12 - 00:30:17 | Speaker 1:

Speaking of which I gotta get that scheduled The funny nose fitting You gotta get a funny nose fitting I just list yesterday As I was driving back from the house I was listening to Jon Hamm On the Howard Stern show Promoting this exact vehicle And I don't think I realized that they were books Until he said yeah these were books And I had them as a kid and I loved them And he said I also really loved Chevy Chase's performance in those movies but i was you know he said he definitely was set he was not setting out to do a chevy chase impression um yeah that would that would be obvious and it wouldn't really work um and i actually have kind of high hopes for it as well it's getting really good reviews and like i said he is i believe also it was directed by the person who directed super bad Let's go. So that's got to be another, I think, kind of positive. So, yeah, I think that's one I'll probably watch on TV, like as in order it, you know, or something. I don't know if I need to be in a movie theater to see that. But, yeah, no, I'm actually kind of excited about it as well.

00:30:17 - 00:31:06 | Speaker 2:

You know what? I'm just I'm now just retroactively bummed about something. I told you these were the first series of books. I'm going to put this in like the early to mid aughts. I was probably collecting these Fletch books. And again, just like kind of like buying them at garage sales or what have you. And I don't know where they are. I'm sitting here in my office and I told you I organized all of my books when we moved in here. So I'm sitting the books that are closest to me are my little like kind of pulpy novel section. My Walter Mosley's, my James L. Roy's. What else do I have up there? And Elmore Leonard's. I can never keep those guys straight. Raymond Chandler's are up there and I'm staring at it. And none of my Fletch books are there, Luke. I had a good number of these things. I wonder if it doesn't seem like I'm the type of guy who would just be getting rid of books. But I wonder if I just handed off my collection of Fletch novels at some point. I guess I got to be rebuilding that collection.

00:31:06 - 00:31:11 | Speaker 1:

Does anybody get killed in these books? Is it that serious or is it more like? Yeah. Yeah.

00:31:11 - 00:31:11 | Speaker 2:

Yeah, I think so.

00:31:12 - 00:31:15 | Speaker 1:

Because how did he never go with Fletch and Blood? Oh, that's a good one.

00:31:15 - 00:31:15 | Speaker 2:

Yeah.

00:31:15 - 00:31:22 | Speaker 1:

Doesn't that seem like that could be? Yeah. Confess Fletch, by the way, is the one they're making into a movie. Yes. You're right. Yeah. That looks like it's the second in the series.

00:31:22 - 00:31:37 | Speaker 2:

Okay. Yeah. Confess Fletch. yeah i'm sure i read that although i don't recall again these are like you read these things and they're you just like they're they're so disposable in in a fun summer read way so i'm a little bit um i'm a little bit bummed that i can't remember what's in it what what do you

00:31:37 - 00:32:36 | Speaker 1:

what are you joking well when i go to the fletch i was just looking up the fletch books and then an ad presents me with a possibility of buying a book called a match made in space back to the future book by george mcfly and i was like well that can't be a real thing and And then I'm remembering, I think, in the movie, his dad, played by Crispin Glover, has written a book called A Match Made in Space. And this book is a replica of the original Match Made in Space by George McFly, as seen in the 1985 film Back to the Future and contains 250 pages. The cover has been painstakingly created in high-quality, crisp graphics. Since no actual content exists for the body of the rest of these pages, the remainder of this book has been cleared for you as a journal or sketchbook. has cleared for use. So in other words, there's nothing in it. It looks like the book that George McFly either reads or writes. I guess he would have written it.

00:32:36 - 00:33:19 | Speaker 2:

Yeah, here's my memory of that. And I could be totally wrong. I'm actually throwing this out there just to make the listeners angry if I get this wrong and they can give you something to write in about. I feel like we don't have enough of that lately. So I think that marty mcfly's dad like in the in the um version of events that we know and begin with he wanted to be an author right yeah but he is and he's stuck in more of a job that maybe he sees as more of a dead-end job of some sort and then uh then you know things change when marty goes back in time back in time and then when when he kind of changes around the events his dad does end up becoming an author and i think right exactly and so when he comes back and everything's way better

00:33:19 - 00:34:13 | Speaker 1:

in his family it's because his dad george actually wrote and the picture of course on the cover of a match made in space is the marty mcfly it's like this the quote-unquote alien who visited george mcfly you know i think it's like marty mcfly in like a hazmat suit or something oh sure yeah yeah and he's like trying to trick his dad into basically boffing his mom so he can be born or whatever taking her to the thing taking her to the prom or something now this has now led me to this thing called replica books on amazon which is kind of clever they've also got the sports almanac that biff gets his hands on yeah so you can buy that i'm assuming that's also probably uh you're allowed to use it as a notebook on the inside um so they've just gone through and gotten iconic books from different movies and television shows and things like that and then just recreated the cover and then you know you can just buy it and keep it as a notebook or something and of

00:34:13 - 00:34:17 | Speaker 2:

course you have one you have one originally from the set don't you don't you have the man inside

00:34:17 - 00:35:06 | Speaker 1:

me by tobias i think i might have given that away as a tbtl really like i think i might have given that away as a gift or something or like as a you know uh a prize maybe or or it's in a box in a shipping in a shipping or it's in a box in a storage unit in in bellingham yeah that was a gift from a listener and it was the the this person worked on Arrested Development and there is a scene where Tobias is signing copies of his book somewhere and I think the book is called The Man in Me The Man Inside Me The Man Inside Me and they didn't of course actually write the books but they made a bunch of covers and then they just dummied up a bunch of books and the actual book that that that it was that was inside the cover was the south beach diet oh right because it was

00:35:06 - 00:35:36 | Speaker 2:

just the jacket it was a hardcover just the jacket yeah right yeah in fact luke you know what i'm just remembering now i could be wrong about this but you might have given that away one of the very first nights we hung out which was the the trivia night tbtl trivia night maybe it was oh yeah neptune coffee i me and genevieve were new in town and i think we'd met you once before maybe twice and then we all ended up hanging out that night after trivia but you had a trivia night wild that was a wild night it was a while yeah that did end up being a wild night

00:35:36 - 00:35:46 | Speaker 1:

but ended with it ended with a guy trying a guy trying to fight me because i had made fun of his brother through karaoke song because he was wearing his sunglasses inside the mandarin gate

00:35:46 - 00:36:35 | Speaker 2:

was that the same night i remember that the the night i'm thinking of maybe it was the same night but there was a bunch of drama because after trivia we all went to get um drinks and food at a place nearby and then like we kind of didn't know a lot of these people at the table with us and then a bunch of people just sort of ghosted and then the um the server brought over the bill and expected you to pay all this stuff and you're like i don't know a lot of those people those were just people who were drifting in and out like i'm not paying for all those people that's the drama that i remember that i don't know if we ended up going karaokeing that night too but i think at trivia at the coffee shop at the neptune you had that like the final tiebreaker or something of the night was didn't you have people stand up on the coffee shop bar and do their imitation of a chicken a la a la arrested development and the winner might have gotten the book or something

00:36:35 - 00:37:49 | Speaker 1:

along those lines that that totally that totally could have happened um that sounds i remember i remember standing myself on some elevated like countertop as i was sort of hosting it yeah almost like a stage and maybe i made people get up and do that afterwards i remember the end of that night because i was i wore a suit to do that and i was still in the suit when we were at the mandarin gate and there was a guy wearing his sunglasses inside and I was pretty tuned up at this point I just seemed silly to me that he was wearing sunglasses in an already extremely dark bar and so I sort of was giving him some grief from the stage and he didn't really respond he didn't really react visibly that much but then he was just on his phone and about I don't know 20 minutes go by and this dude comes storming in what I remember vividly was he was wearing a puka shell necklace uh not classically known as the tough guy look but this guy came storming in he goes over he confers with the guy in the sunglasses and then the guy points back towards our table and then the guy comes back and confronts me and wanted to fight me and and i luckily uh it never came to blows but it was a tense end of the evening i mean it's a miracle to me that you and genevieve uh were like yeah we should continue hanging out with this person you know my brain is

00:37:49 - 00:38:04 | Speaker 2:

so bad i'm just asking this because i really don't know um do you know for certain that vives and i were there at the karaoke place for that those events because i've heard that story so many times i always assumed i was not there for that but now i'm trying to remember if i was

00:38:04 - 00:38:40 | Speaker 1:

there and i just kind of didn't realize what was going on there i feel like that would have been very that'd probably make an impression it literally was the point where i'm like like i'm standing on one side of this table we're in the very back of that bar on i remember this bench and i'm standing behind it and this guy is on the other side of the table and he's just like being so aggressive and like vanessa's yelling at him and i'm yelling at him and i mean it was just it was a debacle maybe maybe you and genevieve had already had already kind of detached from the situation at that point it was probably pretty late in the night but yeah i'll ask genevieve she

00:38:40 - 00:40:46 | Speaker 2:

remember better because i know that back then if thunder was rolling we were down to roll with it especially you know especially genevieve um and so i can't imagine just saying like oh we're tired we're gonna go to bed now but i mean i don't know man my brain my brain is so bad in fact i don't know if i'll play this voicemail um but we got a voicemail from our buddy rodin on the tbtl voicemail line that i heard today and he i saw him this week and he's like hey did you get my voicemail it was about that time i found all of that money i told you everybody wants to talk about found money luke it's a thing but he's like don't you remember we were at um remember that old dive bar the crosswalk in greenwood which later would become like coindexters i think he's like remember i found um and that bar was pretty sketchy like i loved that bar but it was the one bar that i would go to that friends would be like no that feels like a kind of unsafe place i feel like they were exaggerating but i think maybe some people saw various deals going down there i don't know i never saw that and definitely had a very rough edge to it had an edge to it but also the very nice black and white tiled floor that I thought was cool in a Twin Peaks kind of way anyway and the bartenders were always very nice to me but anyway we were there one time and Roden was like yeah don't you remember I found like four hundred dollars in cash and rolled up 20s and like some guy didn't even know he lost it and I found that and his and his shitty cell phone and he came back to the bar later and said the guy the guy left he had like put this stuff under the pool table and forgotten about it then the guy left then the guy came back later and didn't even act like he had lost anything was just back for another drink or something and Rodan went up to him and sort of tested the waters and said hey man did you lose your phone and the guy's like oh yeah I guess I did and Rodan's like well what did it look like and the guy describes it's like a flip phone and so Rodan apparently said okay here it is and the money you left with it and the guy's like oh oh, shit, I didn't even realize I left all this stuff here. So that was Rodin's found money story. But the point is, that was like five years ago or something, and Rodin's like, you were there. You were there. I'm like, yeah, but I was at the crosswalk. I mean, there was brown liquid in the glass in front of me, I'm sure. I don't remember these things that well. So anyway, my brain is bad.

00:40:47 - 00:43:20 | Speaker 1:

Yeah, I have. I mean, thankfully, in my dotage, these kinds of stories, there are very few of them anymore. But back in the day, there were just so many incidents. that they do kind of blend together there was a time when uh carrie and addie and i went somewhere after i think maybe live wire at the neptune and we went to 13 coins to get some late dinner and i come back from using the restroom and addie was really emotional because somebody for absolutely no reason somebody who clearly had just been drinking decided to start excoriating her in the waiting area of 13 coins basically saying that she was overusing the word like just somebody some strangers eavesdropping a stranger was just everybody's waiting for their table and addy is talking to carrie and she apparently is overusing the word like in this guy's estimation and then this guy just rips into her and i didn't see any of this because i was using the restroom and i come back these people are now gone and then addy and carrie are sitting there and i can see addy's really emotional i said what happened and they're like nothing i was like really what happened and it's like well somebody was pretty rude to her who was it i'm not telling you i was like just point them out i'm not gonna do anything i just want to know who it was and they're like okay and they pointed him out and then we're all walking back to our table in 13 coins and then they slip into the booth you know how the old 13 coins had those booths that go way up high yeah they just like slip into the booth and i just like saunter over to the dude he's on one those swivel captain's chairs at the bar yep those were huge bars swivel him around and i was like i i really would like you to apologize to my daughter uh as you might imagine he was um not interested in that idea one thing that was interesting was his friend was profusely apologizing to me about how how he had treated my daughter so that made me think that there was some there there and anyway he and i tussled it was fine but what do you mean you tussled what's that what do you mean you tussled i mean we had a fight we had physical altercation we were spinning around we knocked a picture off the wall the interesting thing was we came in from one entrance got eventually got seated and then as this guy and i were spinning around and i ripped his shirt off and a few things happened and then all of a sudden someone's like break it up break it up and then carrie and eddie just got up walked over to me and then we just went out the other door the other exit door was right there we just got in the car and went somewhere else for dinner Because we're like, this is probably, we're probably not going to be eating here tonight Holy shit, how long did that last? The tussle? Yeah 15 seconds

00:43:20 - 00:43:20 | Speaker 2:

Oh

00:43:20 - 00:43:25 | Speaker 1:

I mean, it was, yeah, but I'm surprised you never heard that story

00:43:25 - 00:43:31 | Speaker 2:

No, I never heard that story, and I always find these things fascinating Because I'm such a non-confrontational person, or I'm a I am too now, by the way

00:43:31 - 00:43:34 | Speaker 1:

I would not fight someone for insulting my daughter

00:43:34 - 00:45:24 | Speaker 2:

But first of all, I mean, well, here are the things I find interesting about that story If we're just doing this, I feel like, okay, the coffee's kicking in So first of all, I didn't know this story. Also, I feel like as we look at our lives and eras, and you and my life are well intertwined at this point, so I don't want you to feel like I'm dividing your life into eras, but the fact that this is the Carrie era, I think of that as being a much newer era. Now, you and Carrie got married, I guess, has it been 10 years now? I mean, you guys were together, I guess, for a longer time than it feels in my brain. wife on your 10th sorry i'm now i'm bringing up but i'm sorry palimony year am i making you feel uncomfortable i apologize but it was i just feel i think you know what i'm saying here is it feels like a much more modern version like all you and i talk about times sometimes i was there sometimes i wasn't where you got into fights in parking lots uh outside bowling alleys outside the mandarin gate all these wild stories that we tell that i can hear in your voice like there's no need to list them here um but this but i don't think of you doing this a lot um in in in our later years and so that's one thing that i'm kind of surprised by this but i guess i'm also somewhat underestimating how how long it's been um but also i find this fascinating because obviously i just feel like i'm just gonna hurt your feelings but obviously carrie and adelaide didn't want you to know who had done this because they knew what the result was going to be and then the result is exactly what they thought but i find it fascinating that you all just this is on them for point right well that's what i'm saying what let me excoriate them now no um but then you just went to dinner somewhere else i mean i just can't imagine if i had a situation like that i would need to be home for a week not because i'm physically hurt but just because i need to i need to figure out i need to sort things out

00:45:24 - 00:46:30 | Speaker 1:

um that part was kind of surprising to me i literally think we ended up going to dicks because it was still open and we were really hungry i was struck by and then i was actually very apologetic to them afterwards particularly to addy because i was like nobody needs to see their dad fighting somebody in 13 coins you know like it's just that's traumatic and weird and like not normal person behavior so also not person who just got off of a stage at the neptune theater where there was 400 600 people there enjoying a public radio recording is what i believe it had been maybe it was maybe it was it wouldn't have been a tbtl thing because i think after tb actually sorry i'm just piecing this all together that might have been after a tbtl thing where folks were meeting up at what was uh seattle's best karaoke or something and like we were just at a at a stop along the way i don't know like i said the problem is there were too many nights that unfolded like this to where i can't remember specifically all of them well i don't think that

00:46:30 - 00:46:40 | Speaker 2:

was the night because i would have been probably with that i think that's probably come up drinks with with a few of a few of our friends who are listeners like uh sure the failures so i don't

00:46:40 - 00:48:07 | Speaker 1:

think it was that night i was struck by how kind of like basically addie and carrie just kind of got up my memory of it was eventually me and this guy like had you know been kind of grappling and doing whatever you do in a weird i mean the thing about fights and i've said this many times on the show the thing about physical fights in the real world is they're very uncinematic it's like it's never like uh you know tom cruise fighting someone in the movie far and away you know like this there's very rarely a like cinematically dramatic uppercut or haymaker that has landed it's usually just a lot of like rolling around on the floor grunting and uh just kind of pressing on each other which is also by the way how i make love yeah well i heard you're a danimal in the sack so anyway i just remember this this like kind of spontaneous moment of of violence happening and nobody by the way i wasn't hurt uh uh the dude wasn't particularly hurt but um but anyway just remember looking up because i never like left my i never i never went to the ground this guy went to the like i threw this guy on the ground whatever by the way he was taller than me too and stronger than me so i don't know how that worked out but it did and they were just standing there and then we just like without saying anything the three of us just calmly walked out the emergency exit like well the night's over at 13 coins for us just like the joker walking

00:48:07 - 00:48:13 | Speaker 2:

away from the hospital with explosions going on in the background yeah um look now i'm texting

00:48:13 - 00:48:22 | Speaker 1:

with carrie about this i said hey do you remember when i fought the dude at 13 coins what do you remember about it and she said heck yes i do i remember a lot what do you want to know okay any

00:48:22 - 00:48:32 | Speaker 2:

questions andrew yeah all the questions when was this about what you know about what year was this that would be a that'd be a good start i guess that's kind of what i'm trying to figure out i'd

00:48:32 - 00:49:36 | Speaker 1:

like to know what event you preceded this i just i just asked when was this was i hosting the show before okay yeah so we'll get to that somewhere anyway i do it's i will say this you heard it in my voice when you were kind of listing places where i had had altercations back in the day um and it does make me really wince and it's interesting because i think for a pretty solid section of my adult life I thought there was something kind of macho about it or like I wasn't embarrassed by it I was just kind of like that's that's a thing that I do if somebody you know presses my buttons or whatever and it's amazing how again it's probably just low t but it's amazing how um how much you can your your feelings can change around something like that like I just I have a very bad feeling when I think about getting into physical altercations with people that were totally avoidable even if the people were being rude whatever was happening it was never something that was necessary it wasn't like i'm batman's parents trying to leave the opera and

00:49:36 - 00:49:47 | Speaker 2:

go down an alley you know although if they were fighters you know maybe things would be a little bit different so okay we have update number one i think you had just hosted live wire at the neptune

00:49:47 - 00:51:24 | Speaker 1:

okay so these are the live wire years how long this is in the live wire era and um i'll just continue to I'll continue to piece together the evening as I as I get as I get reports but Um, anyway, I don't know how much else to say on that other than I am a little surprised that that never came up in conversation between you and I just offhandedly because it was a, you know, it was a, it was an unexpected turn in the evening. But, um, yeah, uh, in the meantime, let me just give you, it's like 49 minutes into the show now. So probably time for a break. Actually, let's do this. Let's take a quick break. And, um, uh, when we come back, I want to just give you the five minute update on my litter robot and um and the bubbles is relationship with this litter robot is very interesting and it's not what they say in the manual is going to happen so we can talk about that uh and a couple other things when we come back here on tbtl all right let's thank some of our daily donors These wonderful, generous folks are supporting the show with a donation each month. And it really helps around here. Talking about Connor Mulcahy in Verona, New Jersey. Thanks, Connor. Thank you, Connor. Appreciate it. Brian Smolenski is in Squim, Washington, the lavender capital of the Northwest. Is that true? They grow a lot of lavender out there on the way to Squim.

00:51:24 - 00:51:28 | Speaker 2:

We have some lavender in our yard, and Genevieve is very excited about it.

00:51:28 - 00:51:51 | Speaker 1:

I know. I have some lavender growing out at the house that I'm working on. And, I mean, the landscaping is an absolute disaster right now. And I keep thinking, I can't deal with that. There's so much actual physical structure work that still has to happen. The landscaping feels like a low priority. But also, I'm up there a lot, and it would be nice if it wasn't an overgrown thicket. Some of it is lavender, and I was like, I would like to preserve this lavender.

00:51:51 - 00:52:41 | Speaker 2:

I am in a weird position where, well, I shouldn't even say this because I'll rue these words, but I'm so sick of my lawn just being brown and dry and brittle and gross, and I keep on thinking, oh, soon the rains will come. The rains will come and my lawn will be green again. The problem is it will be raining while the lawn is green, but I am looking forward. I passed somebody's lawn on a, we were taking a little walk from the Pinehurst Pub to the Eagles yesterday. Didn't get in any fights, but that's still where I am on a Sunday And I passed somebody's lawn And it was the richest, greenest lawn I have seen in months And I realized, well, these people are watering the hell out of their lawn Which is not something that I can condone But I felt like the devil Pulling at my shoulder Saying, you could do that You could water your lawn, Andrew I have that same thought

00:52:41 - 00:53:46 | Speaker 1:

Particularly with all this work that I'm doing up at this other house I'm having a deck built And so a lot of what was the lawn is now just dirt because they're digging up for the footings for the deck. And so it's like, I'm also, I love that I got that fancy Tesla of riding lawnmowers, except for the fact that this deck project has reduced the mowable lawn area by about 50%. Yeah, you just need a push mower. I could have probably gotten away with a push mower at this point. So if anybody wants a gently used Ryobi, let me know because I've got one. No, but the area that does still have some lawn that could be used, I have the thought, man, wouldn't it be really nice if that was just like beautiful, green, lush grass that was like nice in the summertime and mowed and you could walk around in your bare feet on it and it wouldn't just be like dry hay, fire tinder. Or, you know, like you could put in a you could put in some kind of a, you know, drip irrigation thing or something. But then I was like, no, don't do that.

00:53:46 - 00:53:55 | Speaker 2:

Yeah. And I can't, you know, and listeners who are already writing emails saying don't water your lawn. I mean, I know it's just environmentally terrible to do that.

00:53:55 - 00:54:15 | Speaker 1:

I mean, let's put together some very cool. Like, that's what I'm really going to do at this place. That's what we had up at the place in Bellingham. By the way, update on that. This is from Carrie. I know whatever it was, be it TV Taylor Livewire was at the Neptune. You, me, and Addy were going to grab dinner before heading back to the Mount Baker house. So we were not going to meet anyone at karaoke, Andrew.

00:54:15 - 00:54:15 | Speaker 2:

Okay.

00:54:15 - 00:54:33 | Speaker 1:

You spun him around in those barstool chairs and asked him if he said those things to your daughter. Scuffle ensued. His shirt is ripped off. A clock fell off the wall. We were asked to leave. You didn't have a scratch on you. So mostly, I think that's fairly disconfirmation on my memory of events for that thing.

00:54:34 - 00:54:34 | Speaker 2:

Yeah.

00:54:34 - 00:54:59 | Speaker 1:

Yeah, back to the important stuff, though, and that would be thanking our donors of the day, including Kelly Sweat in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. Hey, Kelly. Kelly's a longtime friend of the show. Yeah, thanks, Kelly. And thanks to Terry Grineo or Grinello in North Bend, Washington. Appreciate you, Terry. David Zacharis is in Burlington, Vermont.

00:55:00 - 00:55:38 | Speaker 3:

friend in the smittens right indeed in fact have we given like six months ago we were supposed to give david a shout out because he's also an amazing illustrator and he and that's how that's why we have an instagram page for the show literally we created a tbtl instagram page because he had done an illustration of you and me right prior to our tbtl-a-thon in may and so if listeners haven't already checked it out go to our instagram and i think i linked to his profile in there too i mean the talent the talent coming out of that family is a little bit aggravating to be honest with you can we just be good at one thing and then share the rest with the rest of us exactly leave some

00:55:38 - 00:57:52 | Speaker 4:

for the rest of us david no thank you for real and then thanks to amaya uh michelina or michelina in nashville tennessee i was just out there for five seconds they like music there right i have heard that it is a big town for music i would like to actually i didn't i literally did not even enter nashville while i was out there in tennessee because i flew into the airport and then just drove the other way and went out to the country and then the day of flying home i just drove back to the airport so i was i was near nashville but did not really get to experience it and amaya maybe someday we can do a uh some kind of event out there and uh we'll all get to hang out in nashville uh thanks amaya thanks to all of our donors uh today for making the show possible we really would not be able to do this thing without you hello and welcome to top story all right um why don't we we're not going to be able to get to both top stories today and one of them is a is a larger think piece about sort of wither the hit podcast right why don't we actually instead just talk about this very odd thing that happened on a recent flight uh it was a an american airlines flight on its way to dallas uh where somebody hacked into the intercom system have you listened to any of this audio yet no no i haven't it's uh it's pretty uh it's pretty interesting just in its i don't know in its um oddness like you'd think okay if somebody figured out how to like access the intercom maybe they just say like the f word or pee pee poo poo or or something this person was just making noises or playing recordings of noises being made that were just very very strange a guy named emerson collins who is a film producer uh was posting video of himself this was the flight was from la to dallas and the beginning is just now this is just cut together over the whole flight right so it's this guy just kind of like videotaping himself and then editing together the different times when the noises were happening. And then he's also kind of narrating as we get further into it. So just take a listen to this.

00:58:05 - 00:58:18 | Speaker 2:

Someone on this flight seems to have broken into the intercom system and continues to make a sound that is somewhere between an orgasm and vomiting ladies and gentlemen we realize there

00:58:18 - 00:58:39 | Speaker 1:

is an extremely irritating sound coming over the public announcements the flight deck is trying to troubleshoot trying to turn it off so please be patient with us we know this is a very odd anomaly and none of us are enjoying it so we do appreciate your attention just for a few more moments so we figure out how to turn it off thank you did you were able to pick up what the flight

00:58:39 - 00:58:47 | Speaker 3:

attendant was saying over the intercom yeah that was pretty clear to me so the flight attendant is saying we realize that there's something going on we don't know what it is we're not enjoying it

00:58:47 - 00:59:27 | Speaker 4:

um yeah it's so strange i mean first of all it has to be it would have to be a recording because i mean first of all the if a person was doing that and they were sitting next to someone then we would immediately figure out who was doing it right like if they had figured out a way to use their computer to get into the intercom which i don't even think that's how that works my sense for the intercom is it's just it's like a you know it's a microphone that's got speakers um set throughout the plane and when you pick up that little receiver you're just talking into the microphone right like i don't even understand how would you hack into that i don't know are there

00:59:27 - 00:59:32 | Speaker 3:

any updates when did this story first post it was just this morning so there's no updates yet i want

00:59:32 - 00:59:51 | Speaker 4:

I saw somebody tweeted, somebody named Johan, who I don't recognize, tweeted this to me and Kevin and Bean. Okay. And this person doesn't follow me on Twitter. So somehow, I don't know, that's where this came into my life, I think as of a couple of days ago. But just play a little bit more of this, more of the noises.

01:00:00 - 01:00:05 | Speaker 1:

Who is having a puke yank? You.

01:00:08 - 01:00:08 | Unknown:

Come on.

01:00:24 - 01:00:25 | Speaker 1:

Still going.

01:00:25 - 01:01:36 | Speaker 2:

i think that's my favorite one the scooby-doo oh but you feel like it doesn't feel recorded because you feel like somebody's almost like changing up their routine a little right well that's the thing so this is an interesting thing so i'm reading from the washington post here after collins posted this video last week and i believe the story that i'm reading was published either this morning or or uh possibly yesterday uh let's I'm reading something that was just published this morning, and according to the Washington Post, after Collins posted this video last week, the mystery deepened as passengers on other American flights in recent months reported the same array of noises. Quote, it wasn't the whole flight, but periodically weird phrases and sounds, then a huge, oh yeah, when we landed. We thought the pilot left his mic open, says journalist Doug Boehner, on his recent Orlando to Dallas flight. a tech executive Brad Allen wrote that he and his wife experienced similar noises on an American flight in July to be clear he says it was just sounds like moans and groans of someone in extreme pain the crew said that it happened before it had no explanation

01:01:36 - 01:01:42 | Speaker 3:

wow that is absolutely wild and it's all American flights it sounds like

01:01:42 - 01:02:51 | Speaker 2:

all of these that I'm reading about are American I'm just kind of reading this cold on the fly let's see it says that the systems are hardwired in there aren't any you know there's no wi-fi access i was uh i mentioned we stopped by the eagles briefly yesterday and just to have a kind of a quick after after all of our teams imploded drink and um they're a group of regulars were there and they had a youtube video that they wanted to show all of us on one of the tv screens right and like we live in a modern age so they were able to just say to the bartender hey can you give my phone access to the television and even doing that so that they could like kind of stream a youtube video from their phone to the tv right and even that it's like okay well in order to do that then you go into roku and then there's a code that the tv owner has to give to the people who have the phone to punch in the code you know all of these devices have ways of verifying that we're the real people and so you'd think any kind of a any kind of an air airplane situation like this would have that but the technology it's not even there it's not wi-fi it's a it's a microphone plugged into speakers like a like a pa system in a school in

01:02:51 - 01:03:32 | Speaker 3:

the 1980s right which should make it like impossible to hack into it when i was first hearing it via this tiktok video i thought maybe it was mechanical like the sound of some kind of hydraulic thing going up and down but of course everybody including well you heard the flight attendant announcing was obviously within the plane clear that it was coming through the speaker system so i mean that is just that is a real mystery it is a real mystery i also get go ahead sorry i was going to say forget the uh you know navy trying to figure out what those ufos are that they can't figure out how they're like let's get this solved let's figure out what this is

01:03:32 - 01:03:53 | Speaker 2:

i'm with you and could it be related to those ufos at the navy flyer see um i also think it's interesting so this person emerson collins who's like whose main tweet and tiktok about this have have really taken off it makes sense this is a filmmaker who has a blue check mark but like how many people are on a flight 200 god i'm dumb how many people are on like an average

01:03:53 - 01:03:58 | Speaker 3:

airliner flight like this like well i mean yeah i'd say i'd say a couple hundred maybe 200 or

01:03:58 - 01:04:24 | Speaker 2:

something the kind of plane like wouldn't why why isn't twitter flooded with at least a hundred of these videos from this flight maybe it is and we're just not seeing it but you know what i mean like everybody's on twitter these days everybody's holding a little recording device how come it's how come i'm gonna try to stop saying how come why is it that just this one person's video seems to be leading the charge here you'd think there would be a million angles on this i guess but i mean

01:04:24 - 01:04:39 | Speaker 3:

considering it's been written about in the washington post and there are other people saying they've heard this on other american flights it makes i know what you're saying are you thinking this might be a hoax no i'm not i'm just asking i'm just asking questions

01:04:39 - 01:04:46 | Speaker 1:

is that who i was doing i don't even know what i was doing i thought that's always his defense

01:04:46 - 01:04:59 | Speaker 3:

yeah right right it's like he'd love to just ask why the vaccine has caused so many heart attacks in people but anyway um no no i'm honestly i wasn't even getting in the getting

01:05:00 - 01:05:25 | Speaker 1:

at anything with that i'm just literally surprised it's kind of like it just sort of seems like these articles we're reading should be linking to all whenever something like this happens in a public place usually there's various angles on it and various personal experiences that people are recording and i'm just sort of wondering on a flight with so many people this is a very unusual thing like this is weird i would be recording this too i'm just trying i mean smarter people

01:05:25 - 01:06:15 | Speaker 2:

than me which is by the way most people uh just like have been trying to figure this out including people in the probably that work for american airlines so i don't know what the use is of me speculating but it's like i mean i'm just trying to think of how that could be because you're not playing anything recorded it'd be one thing if like you were playing that like a recorded safety message and there was something in it it'd be like well maybe somebody corrupted the file like maybe somebody you know inserted some audio into these things but that's not even what's happening here this is just sort of like an open channel or a closed channel really because unless you're picking up one of those phones which everybody would see how are you even getting your voice onto that overhead the system of speakers like it's it's totally baffling and like right now

01:06:15 - 01:06:52 | Speaker 1:

so you and i are just fascinated by this and like right now are there actual like flight engine first First of all, is this plane grounded or is it flying somewhere right now? I'm picturing people like there has to be some sort of serious meetings going on right now. Right. Like some people who actually know about technology and work for American Airlines have got to be sitting down in a meeting right now saying like, well, what could possibly be the cause of this? And there are the people who actually understand how the systems work. Right. Like, what are they saying? I want to be in on those meetings is what I'm saying. And I wonder if this plane is flying right now. And I wonder if it's making these grunting noises.

01:06:53 - 01:07:21 | Speaker 2:

Well, and also not to be like overly serious with it, but OK, if somebody is futzing with this thing, is there something more critical to the flight they could be futzing with? Right. Exactly. This is kind of funny, actually. Like, I feel like I'd be kind of cracking up if I was on a flight and this was happening. But you don't want somebody figuring out how to change the attitude of the flight. And by that, I mean, like, literally, I mean that from a pilot standpoint, not like, is everybody in a good mood?

01:07:22 - 01:07:24 | Speaker 1:

Do you mean altitude or what is attitude?

01:07:24 - 01:08:02 | Speaker 2:

No, attitude is an aeronautical term for, I believe, the direction the plane is pointed or the angle of the plane. It's called the attitude. I didn't know that. Yeah, attitude and altitude. Like, you don't want attitude, plane. I misspelled both attitude and plane, so we'll see if that gets anywhere. Um, oh, let's see here. Yeah. Uh, attitude is usually understood as orientation relative to the horizontal plane. Um, so, uh, yeah, you just feels like if there, if somebody is, and is this somebody that works for the airline? Right.

01:08:02 - 01:08:06 | Speaker 1:

Is it just like, is the, is the pilot having an elephant? Right.

01:08:06 - 01:08:07 | Speaker 2:

Pranking an animal?

01:08:07 - 01:08:13 | Speaker 1:

Well, you know what I always say? It's all about altitudes and altitudes. Altitudes and altitudes.

01:08:13 - 01:08:31 | Speaker 2:

I would accept that as a show title. Let's go. I mean, just because I started the show by talking about it, an update. I have this fancy litter box now, Andrew. Was it listener Abony who also got one of these? Yeah, I think so. It's just psyched out of her mind.

01:08:31 - 01:08:32 | Speaker 1:

Yeah, yeah.

01:08:33 - 01:09:31 | Speaker 2:

I was very excited when it showed up, and I am still – I will say this. It has solved the issue of poop scooping, poop diddy whoop scoop, poop, because I haven't had to, since last night when I set it up, I haven't had to do any scooping. it's a pretty it's a pretty fascinating machine um it's a big kind of globe and when it senses the cat has been in there it then goes into cleaning mode where it rotates and it sifts all of the litter through a uh kind of like a screen and then that pulls out anything that's clumped it dumps that and then it sends all the litter that that that's been now that's been filtered back into the globe. And the biggest issue is that it rarely gets a chance to clean itself because every time it's going into that cycle, Bubbles climbs in and then it stops. It won't do anything when the cat's in there.

01:09:32 - 01:09:47 | Speaker 1:

So in other words, she goes, does her business, steps out. Then the machine is like almost like one of those automatic toilets that flush in the movie theater or what have you. It senses that she's out. It starts doing its thing. But then she's like, hey, what's going on? And then crawls back in

01:09:47 - 01:10:33 | Speaker 2:

They've got a whole Exactly I I'm not kidding I brought her home She'd been up at the house With me and my dad I brought her home I took this thing Out of the box I had put Like Five grand of litter into it and she was in there going to the bathroom and i was they have all this stuff in the um instruction manual that's like in case you have a nervous cat that doesn't want to go in it here's all these instructions for how you can acclimate your cat to this thing and i'm like i have the exact opposite problem she will not leave it alone yeah she's just hanging and i get an indicator on my phone every time she gets in there because it weighs her by the way she weighs six and a half pounds um so it's always telling me like here's how much your cat weighs and also cleaning cycle interrupted anytime it's trying to do its thing she then becomes totally intrigued

01:10:33 - 01:10:42 | Speaker 1:

and wants to climb in it would be funny if it told you how much your cat weighed before it went to the bathroom and then after it went to the bathroom well it would appear that um i mean

01:10:42 - 01:10:55 | Speaker 2:

yeah i guess i'd have to get the afterweight because but she continues to be six and a half pounds okay good so but i mean i'm i i want that for myself sometimes you know right yeah no i have a productive morning and you want to know did i i mean did i drop a few lbs yeah i have

01:10:55 - 01:11:00 | Speaker 1:

I have an uncle who said that that was his version of a diet was skip lunch and then go to the bathroom.

01:11:00 - 01:11:48 | Speaker 2:

But the other thing is, so the other litter box I had, which was just like your kind of standard thing, it's just like a big rectangle and it's got like a door on it, right? That kind of flaps back and forth. What I'm realizing is that this one, because it's this open globe thing, it doesn't have any kind of door on it because you couldn't because it's rotating, right? So any kind of door would just be upside down half the time or whatever. I don't know. So they, I guess you could install, you could solve this problem, but they have not solved this problem. And so because it doesn't have a door flap, I feel like she is spreading way more kitty litter on the floor of the bathroom than from the other system. So on the one hand, I don't have to scoop anything, which is kind of great. On the other hand, I have now swept the bathroom two times. I swept it last night before I went to bed, and I swept it this morning when I got up.

01:11:48 - 01:13:43 | Speaker 1:

Yeah, that's a pain. And I really so Vives and I, when we had our friend's cat pretzel staying with us for almost three weeks, we had to put another litter box out upstairs because at first the cat was new here and, you know, was kind of scared to leave that room. So we wanted to make sure that pretzel had access to a to a litter box. And then once both cats were comfortable roaming around the house, we we did try putting away the extra litter box. And anyway, and one of them then went to the bathroom on the floor. So we're like, OK, we better we better keep an upstairs litter box and a downstairs litter box until this experiment's over. So anyway, all of that is to say I was kind of back in the bad old days of having kind of an exposed litter box. It was upstairs in our like kind of our little TV room next to our bedroom. And I was able to deal with it because I knew it was only temporary. Like when we were looking for houses, it's amazing how much of the conversation was about where would we put a litter box? Like, I just don't, I don't, I am not comfortable having a litter box like out. I don't want it. I know a lot of people do this. A lot of friends have it this way, but I did not want a litter box like in a bathroom. It's just, it's just tough. And those seeds go everywhere. The little bits of sand go everywhere and it's impossible. And so luckily here we have like a little boiler room area where we can hide the litter box and the cat can go in there and she likes it and we like it and it's out of sight. But for this two week period, we had like an uncovered litter box upstairs. I kept it meticulously clean as far as scooping it several times a day. But my God, these cats, they just dig and they dig and they and they fling the stuff all over the place. And even though I would sweep constantly, it's just like collecting. Man, Luke, when Pretzel did go home, it was a little bit bittersweet because I really enjoyed hanging out with her. But like within seconds of Camaro Kev taking his cat back, I was like tearing every single furniture, piece of furniture out of that room so I could do a deep clean on it, like vacuuming it like top to bottom because i just wanted to start fresh again i have a very low

01:13:43 - 01:14:43 | Speaker 2:

tolerance for litter boxes yeah it's funny that you would say that about the location of litter box because you know my dad and i i'm building out this tbtl studio which is also going to have a little kitchen and a bathroom in it and uh i we were we were building we were framing out where the in the bathroom where there's going to be a closet for a stacked washer and dryer and then something else and i was like we also have to make sure that this closet has the dimension to it so that i can put this litter robot in here and it has to have an outlet so i can plug it in yeah so it's like i'm already like constructing for this thing yeah good because because yeah it's like you know i i'm also not if she wasn't such a wild animal who's who's you know going to the bathroom wasn't such a pungent event for her maybe it would be okay to have it somewhere a little bit less tucked away but as it is it's like we got to like keep that away from everyone because like she's really she's uh it's quite it's quite memorable when she goes to the bathroom and so

01:14:43 - 01:14:51 | Speaker 1:

what by the way so you say clumps out you know takes out the clumps or whatever and then it deposits it in a drawer do i remember that deposits in a drawer underneath the whole thing

01:14:51 - 01:15:29 | Speaker 2:

and then you and that by the way i'm gonna tell you right now let's see here i'm looking because i'm looking at the app right of course it's app based or at least app controlled Thank you.

01:15:00 - 01:15:29 | Speaker 3:

the i set this thing up last night at about eight maybe it is uh let's see here i'm i'm clicking on it she's already almost filled it up geez louise um that's the other thing so uh the drawer level the drawer which is where the stuff goes after it gets filtered out is 40 full okay so not it's not almost full but like it's 40 full from her using this thing since last night at uh whatever it was

01:15:29 - 01:15:57 | Speaker 2:

nine or something wow so what happens if you were to be gone for a day or two you know what i mean now it's just 35 which is interesting you know what it should do is it should turn it into some sort of boy that would be you need to close the loop on that right then it goes into the drawer and then the drawer dumps out into some sort of generator and then it uses the the dung as as fuel and then you can light your apartment with it that would be great that would be like uh um

01:15:57 - 01:16:12 | Speaker 3:

Something from like a Rube Goldberg machine type of thing. Something out of like the beginning of Pee-wee's Big Adventure, but involving more cat poop. Yeah, maybe that'll be, this is a Litter-Robot 4, maybe Litter-Robot 5. Yeah, we're all waiting. Yeah.

01:16:13 - 01:16:21 | Speaker 1:

Here I go once again with the email. Every week I hope that it's from a female. No, man, it's not from a female.

01:16:21 - 01:17:00 | Speaker 2:

all right let's do an email or v-mail before we get out of here let's stick to the topic of pets for a moment shall we uh speaking of your cat bubbles you had mentioned i think a couple of weeks ago now that um you got a spray bottle uh to try to keep your cat off of certain places in your apartment but you believe that bubbles has learned how to use the squirt bottle and locked it up so that when you went to spray her one time, it wouldn't spray because it had been closed up like the little knob had been turned tight. Well, that prompted Rachel to leave us this voicemail.

01:17:00 - 01:18:59 | Speaker 4:

Hey, guys, it's listener Rachel from Pittsburgh. I'm calling in again because I had just a story related to Luke's story about bubbles turning off the sprayer and how she seemed so nonplussed after she has potentially turned off the sprayer. I have a dog and one day I was leaving the house to like run out to go to work and I had like you know had everything in my hand and I realized I forgot my lunch in the kitchen so I set all my stuff down you know my keys and my purse run in the kitchen grab my lunch and I come back to the living room slash like exit of the house and my keys are gone and I couldn't find them anywhere and I was feeling like am I like losing my mind like I swear I just had my keys here minutes ago and then I realized that the dog who had been previously like he always got frustrated when we left he would like whine and cry and sit by the door and sometimes bark because he was a street dog and he had some abandonment issues um he was just like sitting chill as can be on a chair and i was like there's no way that this dog stole my keys but um you know joke was on him i was taking the bus that day and i should lock the door from inside and my husband was coming home first so i left um and it wasn't until like a week later we found it under the cushion he had taken my keys and hit them under the cushion that he was sitting on and that's why he looked so chill like you realize that's what she needs to leave the house got her um so luke i 100 believe that bubble said this animals they are smarter than we think they are power out smart

01:18:59 - 01:20:00 | Speaker 3:

dog man man yeah i like that i saw i saw a video the other day online of a um uh a dog kind of a great dane ish a dog looked like it was a great dane or something but i think it was probably like a maybe a street dog in you know some other place and it was heartbreaking because the dog clearly had an injury one of its legs it couldn't even put on the ground it was like favoring the leg so it was like and this was a big very gangly dog and it was going over to the person making the video who had a loaf of bread in their hands and he comes over with his paw and his one leg up and he walks her very awkwardly and then the person gives him a loaf of bread and then he immediately puts his leg down and is totally yeah and just like using trots off without a care in the world and it's like damn this street dog figured out oh my god that if it does that move It looked so pathetic I wanted to fly over to wherever it was And rescue this dog It totally figured out that that is what makes people

01:20:00 - 01:20:34 | Speaker 2:

more likely to give it food a total scam artist of a dog i love it it was amazing yeah i posted a photo of a dog on instagram this weekend i when i was visiting my friends in bend i met several dogs one of whom is the dog of the people we were staying with or whom we're visiting um and i posted a photo of a dog to instagram and everybody's like you have to adopt that dog i will stop i will stop listening to tbtl unless you adopt that dog i'm like dude that's my friend's dog i Just public service announcement I will sometimes post photos of my friend's dog Online it does not mean I should be stealing them And bringing them back to Washington

01:20:34 - 01:20:51 | Speaker 1:

How long do you think you could get away with it before they figured out You were the one who stole it Like you and Veves You leave Bend at around the same time That this dog goes missing And then suddenly you've got a new dog That you're talking about that looks a lot like this dog That's missing but it's not Sure I feel like

01:20:51 - 01:22:48 | Speaker 2:

I feel like we I don't feel like we'd get very far Like, I don't think we'd cross the border, like, certainly. I think it's like it would be a very weird coincidence if we haven't seen our friends in like five years and then we see them and then their dog goes missing. And when we leave town and we get a dog that that, you know, fits the same description, I feel like the jig would be up pretty quickly. Well, right. I mean, you have to come up with a pretty elaborate story. You certainly would. There was another dog there, but they were house. They weren't house sitting. They were dog sitting. So they had a dog staying with them whose name was Chewy, and this was some sort of a doodle dog, you know, like it ended in oodle, but it was huge. It was by far the biggest dog that I've ever just sort of hung out with for a couple of days. It was a very friendly dog, but it had like a golden fur, you know, golden curly fur, but it was 140 pounds. Holy 140 pounds. It literally – Luke, I've never hung out with a dog that honestly, honestly felt like it was a human being dressed up in a dog suit. I could not – and also, Genevieve pointed this out, and I kind of didn't realize it, but some dogs have eyes that are almost like human eyes, and this dog had very, like, kind of human eyes as well. And I liked this dog a lot. It was a very friendly, very chill dog. It was, like, a friendly dog, but not, like, overly enthusiastic. but it did kind of follow me around a lot because it knew that he could get pets from me and so I really liked this dog but I mean my god at one point we went for a walk with these two dogs and the big dog had to use the bathroom and our friend who was dog sitting picked it up and I was like my god do you need a backhoe to clean up after this dog and she's like it is nasty and this is somebody who's lived with dogs her whole life So yeah

01:22:48 - 01:22:48 | Speaker 1:

Do you have a picture

01:22:48 - 01:22:53 | Speaker 2:

Of this giant dog Unfortunately I don't I do not Unfortunately

01:22:53 - 01:23:09 | Speaker 1:

Well I'm just gonna have to Google 140 pound dog To try to like Yeah that Wrap my mind around With that size I mean Rudy seemed You know Rudy was not An insubstantial Or is not An insubstantial dog And I think she's 65 pounds

01:23:09 - 01:23:56 | Speaker 2:

No this dog Like when I was Standing Easily The top of the dog's back Was up to like My waist Right And it would just lean up against you, too. It's very sweet. I love a dog. Like, my favorite thing that an animal will do when it wants a little affection, and even the cat pretzel that we were cat-sitting did this to me sometimes, too, is like when an animal, usually a dog, stands on your foot as a casual way of saying, like, I think you should pet my butt now. That makes me melt so much. And this dog sort of had that kind of affection. Of course, I had to get surgery on my foot afterwards. No, I don't know if the dog actually stood on my foot, but it would do that thing where it would kind of like just saunter up to you and then just lean its weight against you, right? And I was like, man, this is a substantial dog. But I really love that move. I love the dog that just casually wants your attention.

Yes. Being leaned on by a dog is one of the great joys in life. It really, really is. All right. Let's go ahead and wrap it up for the day. Let's see. I've got some live wire to do. What else do you have going on today?

01:24:14 - 01:24:30 | Speaker 2:

I've got a lot of running around to do. I'm going to see Petey tonight for my third concert trifecta playing at Numos on Capitol Hill. So that should be fun. Yeah, going with a group of folks to do that. So if anything, if I get into any fights, I'll report it tomorrow on TV.

01:24:30 - 01:24:47 | Speaker 1:

Okay, just text Carrie. She'll remember it. Yeah, exactly. She'll give you the deets. Yeah. All right, thanks for listening, everyone. We're going to back you tomorrow with more imaginary radio for you. Until then, take care of yourselves. Try to stay out of any fights, please. Not necessary. Have a great Monday, and please remember, no mountain too tall. And good luck to all.

01:25:00 - 01:25:27 | Speaker 2:

Power out.
