What are you guys doing here? Emergency band meeting. I'm working. This is my work. You're not working, you're just holding a sign. Yeah, well, I got the job because we didn't have any gigs. How can I give you a gig if you've got this job? Yeah, but that's why I got the job. Because there were no gigs. Well, I can't get you a gig if you're going to always go and do a job. Yeah, but that's... I needed the job because there were no gigs. Well, I've got you a gig, so what's with the job? Yeah, but that's it. That's the thing. I got the job because there were no gigs, man. It's a chicken-egg situation. What do you mean? What's he mean, chicken? Well, you know, what came first, the chicken or the egg? Oh, that's irrelevant, isn't it? Or the other egg. Stupid. The chicken, obviously. Well, where did the chicken come from? Well, it came from the... Ah. You see, the egg. You're the egg. You're a bad egg.

00:00:45 - 00:00:56 | Speaker 1:

T-B-T-L. Guess what day it is. Guess what day it is.

00:00:56 - 00:00:57 | Speaker 4:

It's Friday.

00:00:58 - 00:01:00 | Speaker 1:

Friday. Gonna get down on Friday.

00:01:01 - 00:01:03 | Speaker 4:

Everybody's looking forward to the weekend.

00:01:04 - 00:01:10 | Speaker 1:

It's garbage. All I've been thinking about all week is garbage. I mean, I just can't stop thinking about it.

00:01:10 - 00:01:28 | Speaker 3:

Allow me to introduce myself. Maybe you've heard of me. California Magazine just did a piece on me. With the exception of being misquoted several times, I thought it was a pretty good article. I'm not trying to be disrespectful or anything, but I kind of feel like you're winging this and it's going bad.

00:01:28 - 00:01:29 | Speaker 1:

It's stinky!

00:01:31 - 00:01:40 | Speaker 2:

Alright, hello, good morning, and welcome everyone to a Friday edition of TVTL, the show that just might be too beautiful to live.

00:01:40 - 00:01:41 | Speaker 1:

That's a tuna, bro!

00:01:42 - 00:01:54 | Speaker 2:

My name is Luke Burbank, I am your host. Welcome to my world. Coming to you from the Hollywood Broadcast Center right here in Portland, Oregon, where it's another gorgeous day. It's absolutely beautiful out there.

00:01:54 - 00:01:57 | Speaker 4:

Oh, ma, pa, it's just beautiful.

00:01:57 - 00:02:33 | Speaker 2:

Well, it's clear and very, very cold. In a case gone cold, could a podcast bring the heat? Which is my preferred weather system in the wintertime. The thing about living in the Northwest is that it doesn't get super-duper cold like it does in the Midwest or the Northeast. It's just kind of that gray. It's slightly drizzly. I'm into this. I'm into clear and cold and episodes that have a certain kind of symmetry to them, like episode 3838, 3838 in a collector series.

00:02:33 - 00:02:34 | Speaker 3:

Let the fun begin.

00:02:35 - 00:02:44 | Speaker 2:

Which is where we find ourselves on this Friday. I am feeling, I'm still vibrating off of all the fun that we had last night at LiveWire, thanks to everybody who came out.

00:02:44 - 00:02:46 | Speaker 1:

What a fun, sexy time for you.

00:02:46 - 00:03:53 | Speaker 2:

We had a wonderful last show of the year for us at Revolution Hall. It was an interesting night, though. I was approached afterwards by two people who both had manila folders with them. For me, usually that's some kind of paternity suit. but in this case it was two women who each had their own printed out piece of paper that had a photo of me and then the logo of a major software concern and they were wearing their badges from that major software concern and they said could you sign these we're from the Portland office of this company and we've seen you in the training videos I go are you TVTL fans and And they looked at me like I had two heads. They said, no. And I go, here for Livewire? And they said, no. We're just into the training videos. True story from last night. A true story from early this morning was the cat resorting to some extreme tactics.

00:03:53 - 00:03:56 | Speaker 3:

A cat is an angel that poops in a box.

00:03:56 - 00:04:41 | Speaker 2:

To get me to open the door to my bedchamber. it's just a regular bedroom in an apartment in portland but i like i like calling it a bed chamber that sounds kind of fancy um we'll talk about that also speaking of my my bed chamber are you washing your sheets as much as is recommended or you're a gross person are you a gross person uh we will ponder that as well and music for your weekend and this guy uh maybe best known for his depictions of the tall ships he is of course the longest Joining Cobro of the show And he is a major washer of sheets And simmerer of stock Simmer down, Stu He's got a busy weekend ahead of him He's Andrew Walsh and he's joining me right now Good morning, my friend

00:04:41 - 00:05:00 | Speaker 1:

Good morning, Luke I see on the show sheet here And from some brief interaction with you last evening That you missed the Seahawks game yesterday And listen, this is not a sports show I know that Let me tell you what though, Luke I would say you should go back and watch it It is a reminder.

00:05:00 - 00:05:25 | Speaker 2:

reminder of why they call it the beautiful game it doesn't i'm trying to think i don't even remember who won or lost but it was just as thursday night football often does it just demonstrated the grace of the sport and the athletes playing it it was just it was like poetry last night and i'm really sorry that you missed that it was a shame one of the teams had

00:05:25 - 00:05:35 | Speaker 1:

to lose it was just one of those things where at some point there was zeros on the clock and everybody just looked at each other and just said you've honored me with your competitiveness out

00:05:35 - 00:05:41 | Speaker 2:

here absolutely i mean it i didn't want it to end and at times it really felt like it would never

00:05:41 - 00:05:53 | Speaker 1:

freaking end honestly so anyway good i i had a i had a particularly weird view into the game which was of course i was on stage doing live wire for a lot of it although to be honest with you live

00:05:53 - 00:06:02 | Speaker 2:

starts at 7 30 i was gonna say yeah i was gonna i realized that later that you probably would have caught the beginning of it or could have or at least were on your phone right i felt it would

00:06:02 - 00:06:39 | Speaker 1:

be mildly unprofessional considering that we have a large staff that works very hard on the show people had flown in from across the country to be on the program uh no you know hundreds and hundreds of people had purchased tickets to sit in the audience i thought maybe i should give that my attention. Also, my thought was if I can somehow not find out the outcome of the game, then when the show is over, I can go back home and watch the game on tape and have my little treat after getting done with my work. And of course at some point all I see from my brother Sam, who's apparently the new Durs of our text chain, is just like

00:06:39 - 00:06:41 | Speaker 2:

Well, Durs is also the old Durs of our text chain as well

00:06:41 - 00:07:31 | Speaker 1:

Well, you know what's happened with Durs, right? Did you mute them? No, well, maybe. Sometimes I do. I think he's unmuted for me right now. Although, was Durz also kind of despairing in the chain? Because I didn't actually see that, so maybe he is still muted. But I also have a friend. We've got a friend on the inside who is hipping me to, Durz has found a release valve for his frustrations around this team. And so when we were playing the Rams, no, not the Rams, whoever it was we lost to two games ago. It was Carolina, I want to say. We were playing Carolina, and I was noticing that we weren't getting a lot of frustrated messages from our friend Durs, who I love, by the way, deeply. I really do. But then another person that we know was sending me their conversations, and they were bleak.

00:07:31 - 00:08:25 | Speaker 2:

I was getting those, too. I was going to tell you about that. I didn't realize that this person was hitting us both up. And also, I will say this. I have a slightly different take on that, because now I feel like I'm just really dunking on Durs, and I don't mean to. Don't dunk on Durs, it's not a dunk on Durs And I do, I love him and he's just getting out His frustration, like I actually can associate with it More than I think you can Although it does become much, but I remember I was, you know, with some friends watching The Carolina game last week and You know, it's the usual text chain Like, you know, a lot of negativity from Durs Skepticism from Your brothers, over Optimism from me Like drunken optimism from you Slash gambling from me And then, you know, it's the usual thing But then I start getting screen caps of one of Durr's other text chains that were not on saying like, wow, we're two and a half minutes in and he's already going over the deep end. I'm like, oh, yeah, we're getting that on this end, too.

00:08:25 - 00:08:37 | Speaker 1:

And then yesterday I might have him blocked because I didn't see any of that against Carolina. And I didn't going back and reviewing the receipts from last night. I also didn't see he might be blocked right now. Oh, maybe.

00:08:38 - 00:09:11 | Speaker 2:

I'm not saying that it was anything super extreme, but just the usual just like they don't have it today. like this is over you know like that kind of stuff and then and so we're getting that and then he's also doing that because I assume that's what I always assume like Durs is plugged in he's got a lot of friend he's got a lot of friends got a lot of friend groups who are into sports so I always assume that and when I'm watching a game with him be it baseball or football he's often like I can see him furiously typing on his phone so I know that he's got various outlets that aren't just ours so I always imagine that he's just kind of got he's juggling a bunch of text chains where He's just writing like season over, 10 minutes into the season.

00:09:13 - 00:09:26 | Speaker 1:

For some reason, I like the idea that it's like a typewriter. He's like typing, typing, typing. And then the carriage just like resets. Season over. End of an era. The typewriter is just going to whatever they call the cartridges, going back furiously.

00:09:27 - 00:10:17 | Speaker 2:

And then yesterday, though, then I open up Twitter, which actually that's something we should probably talk about. It might be time for me to follow you off of the platform. But it was a weird day for Twitter Because there was some shenanigans Going on with journalists who were critical Of Elon Musk reporting on a story Suddenly getting their Twitter bios Taken away or no longer having Access to Twitter Which now It's dystopian So anyway I'm kind of like in this weird place Kind of following what's going on with Twitter Thank you. on twitter but then also somebody had tweeted something out like hey you know can the because there was a moment where the game changed a little bit and somebody was like can the seahawks take advantage of this situation um and and then there's my buddy ders first response no

00:10:17 - 00:10:27 | Speaker 1:

and i just wrote it's like you're just watching like you're watching good morning america and it's like al roker is like standing out there in time square that he's just ders is standing

00:10:27 - 00:11:07 | Speaker 2:

behind him with a sign that just says no exactly and i don't know the chances of ders hearing this i don't think he listens to the show that much anymore and i swear like i'm not i hope this isn't insult i understand that this is his way of just taking out frustrations but i'm just like i'm getting i'm getting it on our text chain i'm getting screen caps of other text chains then for a little escape i go to twitter and i just see no and i actually did i was like come on andy i responded on twitter and he just wrote wait you think they will and then of course i'm like you then like that's my gambling now I want the Seahawks to win more than ever so that I can later on reply never doubted it but of course it didn't things did not go that way well so my my

00:11:07 - 00:13:02 | Speaker 1:

view is sort of one-eyed like one-eyed closed one-eyed mostly closed view into the game yesterday was my brother Sammy I guess again maybe just because Durs is muted he struck me as the new Durs of our text chain because all I see I'm thinking I'm gonna host this radio show and then i'm gonna go home and then i'm gonna like watch this game and we'll see what happens and i just see something i'm literally on stage during sound check and because i have my computer is open because the way that i get the timing cues from the producers of live wire is also text so they'll say 10 minutes left five minutes left go to break etc so i have to have my text open which is kind of a problem in these moments because i just see my brother sam going seahawks plus screenplay always equals disaster and i'm like okay that's not that's not really positive and then so then i'm like well that's not great so then i get done with sound check i go back i'm i feel like i'm very prepped for the show and so now i do i let myself i'm like let me check the score and i look at it and it's seven three and there's a minute 40 left in the second quarter and i'm like you know what and the seahawks had the ball probably too i don't i couldn't even tell i was looking at the nfl app which, by the way, I curse that app. I curse its name. It is the perfect app for a league that is perfectly shameless. It is so hard to find a score of the one game that's going on on the NFL app because you know what they want you to do? First of all, they won't tell you the score because they want you to click on a watch live link, which then tricks you into subscribing to whatever their service is so you can watch the game. They're literally withholding information from you until you somehow navigate around into the bowels of the NFL app so you can see the score of the game that's currently happening. It's so frustrating. So, again, I didn't even know who had the ball, but I was like, you know, we're only losing 7-3. This is actually kind of promising. And then I go off, I do some more stuff, I look back, and somehow it's 14-3 now, and it's halftime.

00:13:02 - 00:13:02 | Speaker 2:

Yeah, exactly.

00:13:02 - 00:13:47 | Speaker 1:

It's like, well, that wasn't great. But, Andrew, this is where a lot of people who have, I don't know what you call it, brains, would say, well this is not probably the seahawks day i looked at the betting line and i saw that i could get plus 750 on this right now now i didn't know who got the ball at half i didn't know i had none of the relevant information but i thought let me invest a little bit in positivity to see if these seahawks can come back from being down 14 to 3 so i sent off a little bet to my friends at draft kings and then i went on to host the radio show and then i didn't really think about it again until about two-thirds of the way through my radio show where I start seeing cryptic texts from you that I can only read 40% of because only what is in the preview of the text. Oh, that's right.

00:13:47 - 00:13:51 | Speaker 2:

Yeah, I got a little trolly, I think, because I was dealing with my own emotions, too.

00:13:51 - 00:16:49 | Speaker 1:

Well, but the thing was, I couldn't tell if this was a joke because we were doing amazing because there was a way to interpret your messages as, oh, wow, we turned this around. So I think my brother, again, the new dirs of the chain, said, We should just start losing and play for draft position. And I assume that was a total joke because that hasn't even entered my mind as a fan that like that's where we're at now. We're in tank mode. And so I saw that. And again, I'm literally interviewing people on stage. I was not trying to get this information. I'm going lose just for playoff position. Why don't we think that? OK, another question, Sarah Schaefer, about your recent comedy special. And then and then I see one from you. Call me crazy. And then I just see the word Whitehurst. And I'm like, is he saying we should put in Charlie Whitehurst? I was saying we should. The game was over by that point, by the way. And I know that obviously, like, I understood that was a joke. But I could, again, in my crazy brain, I'm trying to kind of piece together what I think the most likely scenario is. you're making that joke now maybe you're making that joke because geno smith our quarterback for the seahawks is playing very badly or maybe you're making the joke because he's playing so well that you're making fun of people who would be suggesting put in a sub for him this is what's now occupying a larger a it's malignant andrew it's growing in my brain it's taking up more of the space that's supposed to be dedicated to hosting this radio job of mine and so uh show's over and then i'm chatting with some uh folks after the program i'm approached by two uh software company groupies which is still my mind is still reeling from that and then our buddy zach uh of zach and lauren uh jost uh comes up to me and says do you want to know the score or not and i now i'll tell you this zach just has a friendly open warm pleasant face and so he he just is such a such a nice fellow i said i don't want to know the score but then i looked at it and he just he looked beautific and i thought did we do it did we did something really good happen and all of those whitehurst jokes were because we were we were doing so well and so then got done chatting with everyone changed my outfit uh was went got in my car started it left and realized i didn't have my cell phone went back to the venue got back into the building walked back past zach and lauren and their friends and then um i said i still don't know the score of the game and zach said uh don't get your hopes up or he said something that was just like and he said this with with love and kindness he said this so as to just kind of prepare me for the it was like are you sitting down kind of a moment like just like just so you know which i appreciated because it helped me i was i was less i was sort of less shocked when i looked at the score and saw that we in fact did

00:16:49 - 00:17:58 | Speaker 1:

not win in it we don't need to get into the x's and o's of it and we've already bored the the non-football interested listeners enough but i will say this i am very glad that i was not watching this game in real time um kind of suffering the highs and lows of it you know texting angrily at our friend durs after unblocking him like i'm glad that i didn't get really any emotional and i only had a financial investment in this game andrew not an emotional investment and it was fine i got up this morning and i saw that you know you you get all those seattle times news alerts and it's like the morning after another sort of bad loss for the team that we love whether it's the mariners or the seahawks it's like a lot of like reckoning you know it'll be a lot of like four keys to the or what went wrong for the and i just kind of felt i just felt totally and completely uh you know uh sort of not um what's the word i'm looking for i was felt unaffected by it i was like yeah you know what we're seven seven this is not the season that i thought it was going to be in any way it's not as bad as i thought it was going to be and it's not as good as i sort of hoped it would be and that's okay that happens in life there was something very freeing about not really following the game last night you know a thought that i had and again this

00:17:58 - 00:19:31 | Speaker 2:

sort of stays on the topic but it's not um it's not getting into the game or anything but it's just about my own journey with football that idea of like well you didn't engage with it so therefore doesn't hurt as bad and if you if if the Seahawks had done well then you could go back and re-watch it I mean that's such a freeing thing right it makes you really kind of question what we go through every week and like what we do with sports and why we like sports and and in what ways we like sports and one thought I had now I was getting a little like when I when I sent out that tweet after or when I sent out that text by the way that was one of those texts where I was like kind of joking but I was also just like in a bad mood because it's a shitty game and of course like you have like David and Sammy and Durs and they're just like bleeding their emotions and I guess you don't really need me like kind of it was a little bit I was just like yeah you know what I think I was thinking at the time and keep in mind this is after the game so I'm both sad and drunk and so like I'm like I'm seeing people saying like we should put Drew Locke in like just see what happens and so i think that's what i was thinking like i was probably it was i was probably making jokes based on what i was seeing on twitter but then bringing it into the text chain without any context and saying you guys are gonna think i'm crazy but we should probably bring in charlie whitehurst just see what happens the what 45 year old clipboard jesus clipboard so anyway nobody responded by the way the only the one thing you can get on our text chain which is very very rare is somebody will give you an angry emoji on your text i think i've seen that maybe once like a comes down. I've seen like a little red angry face. Can't you do that on your iPhones? You can. I always

00:19:31 - 00:19:35 | Speaker 1:

assumed that, I get that a lot, and I always assumed that was ironic. You get that a lot? No, people are really mad at me.

00:19:36 - 00:21:36 | Speaker 2:

Yeah. Is it usually from your LiveWire producers? It's from my Gen Z colleagues, Andrew. But I, anyway, nobody gave me the angry face, but there was just stone silence after that. So anyway, I was just sort of like kind of examining my feelings. I kind of felt bad about sending that. I wasn't trying to poke the bear with a short stick. I was just dealing with my emotions in my way. But here's what's really messed up. And I don't know if I still feel this way in the light of day and the sobriety of day. But there was a moment, a low moment during the game yesterday where I'm sitting there watching it and just think, oh, my God, like turnover. And then I thought to myself, well, at least I hope just hope the Browns lose this week. and it occurred to me and I guess we've maybe explored this a little bit too that like my relationship to the Browns is so so similar to a spurned lover who had a long time relationship with somebody and now I have so much burning hatred for that team that this is the thought I had well I hope the Browns lose this weekend at least and then it occurred to me do I want the Seahawks to win more than I want the Browns to lose and in that moment I thought I would take a losing season from the Seahawks if the Browns also have a losing season like it's so it's so important to me that that team is not successful with the despicable choices that they made to be successful and I was like wow that is some deep jealous ex-team slash lover bs that I have such a burning hatred for that team that I want them to rue their decisions so much that I would sacrifice that the wins of a team i root for in order for them to also lose i want them to be miserable and i want them those fans to be miserable which isn't fair because i kept on saying that like people can make their own decisions about the browns everybody's got their own journey um but i realized that like i want them to be sad more than i want myself to be happy

00:21:36 - 00:21:44 | Speaker 1:

you want to dig into that serious serious star wars shit use your aggressive feelings

00:21:44 - 00:21:51 | Speaker 2:

let the heat flow through you maybe we should just get out of the sports fandom business

00:21:51 - 00:23:38 | Speaker 1:

well again it's an interesting this is a real sort of like a b test right because i i didn't i didn't go through any of that last night and again i love this team i will also mention to you i mean i like i love sports and all that i also had a moment where it was about 4 30 and i was like getting my stuff ready you know it was their last minute prep and i was getting all my little stuff together to go do this radio show thing that you know i'm always really happy when it's happening but it causes me a certain amount of anxiety in the hours before it starts and i thought of you and i was like fucking andrew he's probably ordering a pizza he's probably done with his work for the day he gets to watch this game he's gonna have a couple beers he's gonna eat some za do you ever call it za no i don't i hate feeling kind of fun and flirty i was just like i wasn't now i know i made it sound like i was resentful i was just trying to be funny there but no i was thinking like golly what i wouldn't give to just have the rest of my day be order some yummy food settle in for this seahawks game that you know is is thursday night football it's always fun when they're on national tv and they're playing a worthy opponent and there's all these plot lines And, you know, I had I was very I was envious of anybody who was able to just do that. And then it, you know, it reminds me of a little bit was like my period of time when I wasn't drinking. I would go out to the bar. I got to the Mandarin Gate or something with everyone. And there would be this moment. Let's say it'd be like eight thirty or nine. You know, we'd like that's be the start of things. Right. You don't show up to the Mandarin Gate at seven. I don't even think a place exists at seven. But it's literally just an empty parking lot. And then 40 hobos' minds manifest it at about 9.30 p.m.

00:23:38 - 00:24:18 | Speaker 2:

I walk – actually, let me be your fact-checking cousin on that. When I first moved to this neighborhood, I did go in there one time because I had a thing I wanted to read, something my friend had written that I wanted to sit down with a couple of beers and just, like, be by myself and read for a while. And I went in there at probably around 6.30 or something, and it was don't do it. I'd never walked into that place sober before I don't think Maybe with the exception of after our 24 hour live stream show Which I was just I think just drunk on being awake for 36 hours or whatever it was But yeah no that place hits way different at 6.30 on a Wednesday man

00:24:18 - 00:25:25 | Speaker 1:

So it'd be like 9pm we're all getting there And everyone's ordering drinks and I'm ordering my like club soda And there's like there was like a minute of like huh that'd be fun to have a drink and then i wouldn't and then as the night would progress i would feel less and less regret about or less and less jealous of not being drinking you know what i mean like i would feel not that i was judging anyone but just it just it passed like the fever broke and then i would just be having fun with my friends and then at the end of the night when when when people are trying to really fall apart at like midnight or one i was like feeling great and then i would go home you know what i mean like it was weird that was almost like me with the game last night like i was really and envious of people who could enjoy that game. And then when I was driving home from Livewire and I look at my phone and I see it was like we lost 21-13 or something, I just was kind of like, okay, that was a thing that happened. It felt like a much more healthy connection to it. That being said, when they play a game, I presume next Sunday, I will be watching it. I'll be probably betting on it heavily and getting drunk. So nothing changes. Well, it's interesting that

00:25:25 - 00:25:51 | Speaker 2:

you mentioned like kind of the lead up to it because i mean maybe that is why we do it like i'm thinking about my day yesterday i was very busy you know oh we should mention actually we have a um a special happenin happening tonight at 5 p.m pacific time 8 p.m east coast we are getting together on zoom for a tbtl holiday party people are some of us are bringing uh foods and drinks that we've made we'll have maybe a little uh competition we'll award somebody based on the

00:25:51 - 00:25:58 | Speaker 1:

food that they brought to us we have a very special very special um i say prize and then

00:25:58 - 00:26:28 | Speaker 2:

question mark afterwards prize yes exactly uh compliments of our of our boss john sklaroff but anyway uh if you want it's not too late to sign up for that if you haven't already and also i'm i'm saying that people are excited to bring and show off their favorite holiday foods and drinks but other people i've seen in the chat have said hey is it okay if i just turn off my camera and lurk that's absolutely fine too but you got to sign up in advance to get that zoom link so go to tbtl.net and scroll down until you see a link for the tbtl did we get over 300 are we have we

00:26:28 - 00:26:35 | Speaker 1:

justified the uh special uh you know sort of easement that's been granted us by the bosses

00:26:35 - 00:27:34 | Speaker 2:

at apm i believe we are taking advantage of that now yeah because i think yesterday we were at like 294 or something so i believe we're over 300 people so again we'll just sort of like try to ask people to kind of raise their hands in the chat or whatever and we'll try to focus on various people's food but it's going to be a pretty big crew but uh yeah definitely sign up in advance for that but all of that is to say um I was pretty busy like all this was a very busy week for me um kind of leading up to this and getting a bunch of stuff done uh soon and I was kind of decorated my office a little bit with some holiday cheer yesterday and I was working on the newsletter and so like but I was doing it all knowing that I'm working right up until kickoff but I also told you that like i have this new tv down here that's just like i think a week old right now that's a nice and big smart tv uh i could just dial up whatever you think of amazon you can just dial up amazon prime video and there's the game waiting for me not like some bootlegged version where i'm hooking my laptop up to a computer and i have to refresh it i'm so happy for you for that

00:27:34 - 00:27:45 | Speaker 1:

i'm just remembering the days of you like laptop on the browns game and then trying to put some paper border along somewhere so you don't accidentally see a difference that was that

00:27:45 - 00:28:26 | Speaker 2:

was because i was time shifting it exactly i mean god what a dark that was a dark place to be you gotta say the football season has been a bit easier since i just have one um one team to follow now but um anyway you you mentioned those moments leading up when you were feeling pangs of jealousy like oh instead of you know and i know you love your job and it sounds like it was a an especially fun show last night i love those guys you had on um but it's a job and it's work And like I'm at home and you're right Like I'd raced to the grocery store earlier in the day To get myself some beer And some like what we call freezer feast That's just a generic term for whatever Like shit food we get from the That's not like fight or flight Freezer feast You know when your freeze or feast

00:28:26 - 00:28:28 | Speaker 1:

Instincts kick in

00:28:28 - 00:29:40 | Speaker 2:

I always lean towards feast I got myself a bag of what I referred to this morning And confused Genevieve as chicken No I called it pizza nuggets But, of course, I'm talking about Totino's Pizza Rolls. So I got some of those. Got some frozen wings, whatever. I was air frying those, watching the game. And actually, it was a terrible game. But honestly, it's like those moments leading up to it and the first quarter when hope springs eternal or the first half or whatever. You know what I mean? Like, honestly, maybe that answers the question. because it's like it is that I told you off the air yesterday just when we were chatting about the game I said you know on paper this looks like an absolute disaster for us everything that we know about this matchup this looks terrible for the Seahawks but here it was I don't know noon on Thursday and I just had unbridled optimism and I don't know why I just said anything can happen it's a weird world you know and it's like this breakfast has been a disaster you know just having that feeling and having knowing like you have a freezer feast in your future and a few a few pops like that that is that's the feeling that's the dragon that we're chasing and the thing was because

00:29:40 - 00:31:12 | Speaker 1:

i knew i wasn't going to have that my whole experience with just yesterday's game i'm not you know i'm not claiming that i'm a different person who is now suddenly going to be chill about these about these contests but because i knew you know once i saw on the schedule oh that's thursday night, I knew it was never going to be like a normal experience. me like i knew the chances of me getting home without any info on the game and like sitting down and watching it and being totally surprised by the outcome was pretty much nil and so i just did and there was going to be no pre-gaming for me and there was going to be i just none of the rituals around it it changed my whole relationship with it um which again considering it was kind of a bad outcome i'm not sad about that like and that doesn't mean i wanted them to lose but you know i will also say that like times when that particularly that football team well there are i i you know i've got probably 10 sports memories that are some of the 10 greatest moments of my life one of them by the way mariners coming back against the blue jays in the playoffs watching that with our friend hannah brooks olsen and the crew like that was ridiculous as an event yep um the seahawks in the nfc championship game coming back against the green bay packers uh peace and love to our pack fans i know that as great as that is for me that's probably also terrible for you but like that game was so i mean on balance i'll still take it because it's created some of the best moments of my life but yesterday was a was a reminder that it's sometimes okay to detach a little bit and maybe it could even protect you emotionally yeah yeah absolutely but i don't know

00:31:12 - 00:32:05 | Speaker 2:

man we that's why that's one of the reasons we can leave it here i'm not trying to extend this conversation but that's why people are like hey you guys should talk about you know soccer more you know you guys have the sounders or or even like you guys should talk about the storm like winning winningest team in Seattle history is the WNBA storm right and like and that stuff does sound fun to me and I would maybe like well soccer a little bit less so although hearing bits and pieces of the World Cup it was this is the first time I even knew who was competing and so I guess that's sort of creeping in a little bit too but like you know I didn't I didn't watch any games and I don't have a desire to but even more importantly like that's not me being snobby saying like this sport is dumb and not for me because I don't understand it same with hockey we have a hockey team here in Seattle now it's like why would I take the time to learn another sport that can just take up more time create an obsession and make me miserable more than it makes

00:32:05 - 00:32:52 | Speaker 1:

me happy you know I know well that's what happened with me and hockey I I was like you know had I grown up and with an NHL team in Seattle I would probably be really into it but at 44 however old I was when you know they announced we were going to get a team I just I was curious to see if it would have caught on with me and it just didn't i just don't have bandwidth emotionally uh mentally informationally i just don't have i just cannot bring another sport into my life which again is is probably fine it's probably just as well that i lost the nba you know i kind of keep one eye on it but like i don't watch nba games generally because otherwise if we still had the sonics there would be like three weeks out of the year that i wasn't freaking out about some sport thing you know what I mean like that's just probably also a little bit overkill yeah I think if the

00:32:52 - 00:33:23 | Speaker 2:

Sonics were around I would I've I mean now I've watched a couple but like I lived into my 40s without ever watching an entire NBA game even on TV and it occurs to me and I think I've said this to you before if the Sonics hadn't hadn't been sold and moved away right before I moved here I'd probably be a Sonics fan right now because I'm a Seahawks fan because I hang out with you endures you know and and you guys are the ones who brought me into caring about seattle football for the most part and you guys would talk about it all the time and then i would get sucked into

00:33:23 - 00:34:01 | Speaker 1:

that listen uh we gotta take a break because we're about halfway through the show and i have been distracted because andrew i am trying to deal with a massive amount of scratches on my hands from this cat who has decided that uh she wants to be in this room with me while you and i are doing the show But wants to climb up me But then when I try to hold her like a baby And pet her stomach Then bite me and scratch me And this is not even the most annoying thing she's done to me today Which I'd like to tell you about on the other side of this break Okay Shift away from football talk Which half of the audience hates To cat talk which the other half of the audience hates

00:34:01 - 00:34:03 | Speaker 2:

And that's the beauty

00:34:03 - 00:34:59 | Speaker 1:

That's the duality of TBTL Is that we're able to Alienate half of our audience in the same show Different halves And that is real talent. So stay with us to see that talent on display in a moment. All right, let's thank some of our daily donors who are supporting the program with a monthly donation. And that is the way that we are able to do this for our job. no donations no job and then i don't know where i'm at after that what i don't know what happened if i was down to two jobs andrew it would not be pretty with my gambling habits it would not be pretty thank god for valerie and mike fish out there in carmichael california now you were reminding me during the break that valerie is the person who made those tv

00:35:00 - 00:35:07 | Speaker 2:

TBTL Suncatchers, when we featured one TBTL-a-thon, a number of thank you gifts that were actually made by the TBTL fans.

00:35:07 - 00:35:21 | Speaker 1:

Yeah, so not only is Valerie supporting the show by donating directly, but also by making things. She's a beautiful glass artist, makes beautiful glass art. And so she helped us raise money during that campaign, too. Thank you so much.

00:35:21 - 00:35:44 | Speaker 2:

And you know what I'm having my coffee out of is one of the TBTL mugs, the Coffee Lava mugs. Oh, nice. Those are beautiful objects as well. Thanks, Valerie and Mike. Thanks also to Michael Bram of Turlock, California. Between Carmichael, California and Turlock, California, those are two places that I can't picture in my mind exactly where in the state, the great state of California, those are.

00:35:45 - 00:35:53 | Speaker 1:

Turlock sounds like a city, and I don't mean any offense by this, but it sounds like a city that would be billed like second or third on a public radio legal ID.

00:35:53 - 00:36:15 | Speaker 2:

Ah, I see So it would be like 90.3 Antelope Valley 90.7 Tustin 98.3 Turlock Yeah, I could see that Thanks Michael, appreciate you Also thanks to Alexandra Jancy Of Kamloops, British Columbia I bet you that Alexandra is a hockey person

00:36:15 - 00:36:16 | Speaker 1:

You gotta be

00:36:16 - 00:36:20 | Speaker 2:

Alexandra grew up in Kamloops, British Columbia Canada

00:36:20 - 00:36:24 | Speaker 1:

How many Kamloops listeners do you think we have that we think?

00:36:24 - 00:36:36 | Speaker 2:

I wonder if it's one of those things where it's such a fun name. Maybe it's like four, but it feels like more because every time we say it, it registers in your brain a little more than maybe a city we're more familiar with.

00:36:36 - 00:36:45 | Speaker 1:

Yeah, it looks like we only have two on the list here, in fact, but it feels like more. Thank you, Alexander. The Kamloops windshield factor is what they call that.

00:36:46 - 00:37:06 | Speaker 2:

I wonder if Alexandra knows our other Kamloops listener. I feel like Kamloops is not a huge town There's got to be some kind of a TBTL meetup Between two people there Also, look at this Is this the second day in a row When somebody in your extended family Is donating their hard-earned money to this program Julia has Of Concord, New Hampshire

00:37:06 - 00:37:16 | Speaker 1:

Julia, thank you Julia is my sister-in-law That's Genevieve's sister And yeah, we did thank another family member recently That was in a winter game So that will be coming up in a couple of weeks

00:37:16 - 00:37:27 | Speaker 2:

Oh, okay, good memory, by the way of the time-space continuum. Thank you, Julia. Appreciate you. It's always humbling when one of our actual family members pop up on this list. It's just kind of...

00:37:27 - 00:37:27 | Speaker 1:

Yeah.

00:37:28 - 00:37:33 | Speaker 2:

Like, feels like... Again, the word I will use is humbling. So thanks, Julia.

00:37:33 - 00:37:34 | Speaker 1:

Appreciate it.

00:37:34 - 00:37:35 | Speaker 2:

Thanks for keeping us humble.

00:37:35 - 00:37:35 | Speaker 1:

Yes, definitely.

00:37:35 - 00:37:48 | Speaker 2:

Because after last night's Livewire, I'll tell you what, I feel like... When I wasn't thinking about my Seahawk bets, I thought I was hosting the living Tweedle out of that show. I was really high on my own supply, And so it's good for me to to stay humble.

00:37:48 - 00:38:26 | Speaker 1:

In the words of Kendrick, can I jump in here really quickly while we're on the topic of Julia? And since she is so generously donated to the show and she's a family member, I'm going to give her a little bit of extra time here. Do you remember the other day we were talking about Star Trek Voyager and a character slash actor on that show who I think is the doctor? His name is the doctor. Well, Julia, who's a big Star Trek fan, as is Genevieve. she texted me out of the blue earlier this week and said can Genevieve retroactively barge in on that conversation about the doctor on Star Trek I was duly insulted by that Julia duly insulted

00:38:26 - 00:38:42 | Speaker 2:

well and the irony is if you're somebody who watches Star Trek you know intimately what the possibilities are in terms of time travel wormholes space travel I mean Julia if anyone knows how implausible what you've proposed is it's you

00:38:43 - 00:38:51 | Speaker 1:

Well, actually, though, I wonder if there's a million different scenarios in which maybe in one of those scenarios, you and I actually got it right. That'd be amazing to think. There is.

00:38:51 - 00:39:43 | Speaker 2:

It's called the multiverse. Yes. It's I mean, I don't have to explain this to people, but it's a very well-known concept, the multiverse. And that's there is a universe in which we were just absolutely crushing it when we were talking about the doctor on Star Trek. Thank you, Julia. Appreciate you. Also, thanks to Megan Perry in Omaha, Nebraska. One of my very favorite towns that's also a Counting Crows song. Oh, wow. That's what I was doing while you were talking about Star Trek. Oh, you know what? I was going to say, I don't know if I feel great that when I look this song up, I did a search for Omaha and I got Counting Crows, that it's trying to also send me to 311, the band 311.

00:39:43 - 00:39:44 | Speaker 1:

Oh, are they from there?

00:39:44 - 00:39:59 | Speaker 2:

They're from there. Peace and love to our 311 fans out there. Weren't they the... No, you should always be down, down. Oh, no, this song, Amber, is this...

00:40:00 - 00:40:15 | Speaker 1:

This is the most popular 311 song, Andrew. It's called Amber. This is my music for your weekend. 311, Amber. Coming at ya. This must change tempo. Hold on, I'm just gonna...

00:40:15 - 00:40:18 | Speaker 2:

Okay, now we get into this.

00:40:23 - 00:41:01 | Speaker 1:

There you go. I don't know why I thought that they had some other song that was... Oh, this is the song. They do have this song. Down. This has got to be the song I was thinking of. Oh, no. Yeah. Now that you're always being down, down. Oh, yeah. Man, look at the range on 311, Andrew. Now, is Bright Eyes from Nebraska? He's from Omaha, yeah

00:41:01 - 00:41:08 | Speaker 2:

He's Saddle Creek Saddle Creek, right, right, right That's not Lincoln, is that Omaha? I don't know, I get them all confused

00:41:08 - 00:42:02 | Speaker 1:

Well, Omaha is somewhere in middle America Getting down to the heart of the matter It's the heart that matters Think you better turn your ticket in And get your money back at the door That's what Adam Duritz taught us About the city of Omaha, Andrew And no, I wasn't looking at the lyrics He taught us so much The internet I just have internalized that many You know, me talking about Counting Crows to a certain set of the listeners is like me talking about Pizza and Pipes to Phyllis Fletcher. It fills the crow's heads, which is not what anyone calls Counting Crows. The fans of that band are so happy when I talk about Counting Crows that sometimes I have to super serve those P1s. We just did it. And we have Megan Perry in Omaha, Nebraska to thank for it. And we've also got Kate Sandvik of Minneapolis, Minnesota to thank For donating to the show Are there any bands From Minneapolis, Minnesota That you'd like to Super serve their P1s, Andrew?

00:42:02 - 00:42:07 | Speaker 2:

You know what's very Interesting here is I don't think any music Has ever come out Of the Twin Cities, has it?

00:42:07 - 00:42:09 | Speaker 1:

Not that I can think of

00:42:09 - 00:42:10 | Speaker 2:

I mean like a famous musician

00:42:10 - 00:43:23 | Speaker 1:

Is Hubastank from there? 311, this is what Spotify I don't know I'm not trying to Yuck any yums today On 311 Well you know my Can I tell you really And this is Totally unfair to the band 311 from Omaha, Nebraska but can I tell you what my slight hesitation about them is? And it's based on a rumor, a vicious conspiracy theory rumor that I heard as a kid, and because there was no internet at the time, there was no way to verify it, and it just lodged itself in my brain, and I think of it every time I think of them, and it's totally and completely unfair. What is it? Somebody told me when I was a kid that the name 311 was secretly, and I know this is not the case, I want to be clear, but somebody told me oh 311 you know that's um that's a racist thing you know because k is the 11th letter in the alphabet so 311s is kkk and when you're like 15 and someone tells you that you're like yeah that checks out i mean the difference is at 46 i don't believe shit like that which is why i don't believe in q anon and whatever but somehow i got it in my head when i was a kid that there was something a little off about the band 311 because of k being the 11th

00:43:23 - 00:44:31 | Speaker 2:

letter in the alphabet would it make you feel better if in 2010 snopes.com actually released an article called how 311 got its name is the popular rock band 311 associated with the ku klux clan uh status on this one false luke as you say but it at least it wasn't amber is the color of their energy at least there was um you know it's not like just one kid told you that one time and you had to carry this burden alone it was big enough to make snopes it says here um knowing the fascination value of remaining whoa this is written in a funny way but anyway this is a quote from the band since most interviewers always ask us what does it mean we've come up with lots of different answers over the years some include five friends making music three and then one and one i guess a number dedicated to me by a higher intelligence that's something that band member peanut would sometimes say uh knowing a little numerology and studying a little magic which i do in some factions three is man and 11 is magic so 311 is like male magic you know what let's go

00:44:31 - 00:44:59 | Speaker 1:

back to the racist one i think we bring a little 311 every day on this show a little male magic baby anyway i honestly that is kind of a little bit relieving like that it was it was a it was sort of like you know there were those rumors when we were kids about various things like Marilyn Manson was actually the kid from the Wonder Years you know Fred Savage's friend Paul from the Wonder

00:45:00 - 00:45:35 | Speaker 3:

years grew up to be Marilyn Manson that was one of them the 311 thing I'm trying to think of some of the other ones like Pamela Anderson it had a rib removed ribs removed so that her figure could be the way it was there was and again there was not there was no internet so there was no way to really like fact check this stuff which I use as sort of an excuse also I was a child what I find shocking are people who in 2022 with the access to the information that we have continue to believe things that are on par with 311 is code for kkk right if you read something that says otherwise

00:45:35 - 00:45:40 | Speaker 2:

doing it you can just say it's an untrustworthy source right well right you trust there's absolutely

00:45:40 - 00:46:25 | Speaker 3:

no excuse for this being the case in 2022 because all you had to do was and you know we believe snopes not that snopes probably gets it right 100 of the time but there are ways i mean i don't know why this is where i'm taking the show 47 minutes into a friday episode but i feel like almost the most important thing that you can teach people is media literacy at this point like i could we've got things that do the math for us now there's a lot of stuff there's you know programs that'll correct our grammar it feels like understanding what is believable and what is not believable when it comes to information you're getting primarily from the internet is almost the most important ability you can have in my opinion in modern life yeah and you know it's so funny here

00:46:25 - 00:46:46 | Speaker 2:

though too as i'm saying like if you say hey listen it's verifiable it's on the internet like just go to a source that you can trust like snopes i'm just now remembering um that the snopes co-founder who wrote a lot of these articles admitted to being guilty of plagiarizing a bunch of the articles as well um and i remember that's a different yes it's a little bit you know i interviewed that guy

00:46:46 - 00:47:34 | Speaker 3:

for a tv story before that all came out oh no i didn't remember that what i would say though well then that's why i said you know snopes is not perfect but i don't think the allegation was that any of the information was false yes probably what happened was and i'm not offering an excuse for this dude at all but like my guess because i was kind of surprised when i went i went to his house he lives in tacoma by the way i went to his house in tacoma and hung out with him and his wife and watched him do his work and it's like i think he had like one other person helping him like remotely and i think my guess is what happened was he was kind of overwhelmed and just instead of doing his own research was starting to just like you know plagiarize so that he he's basically stealing other people's work so that he didn't have to do it but i don't think the allegation was that he was putting incorrect information on snopes right exactly means anything you know

00:47:34 - 00:48:00 | Speaker 2:

i'm just thinking i think our pal sam dingman taught me that in this podcast the uh oh the yeah the rumor yeah exactly that's where i think i heard i was blown away i was like i'm listening to this podcast about cal ripkin jr and the the saga therein and then there's this kind of quick aside like hey here's a quote from the guy who co-founded snopes who by the way also got in trouble for some plagiarism so we need to acknowledge that here i'm just like what

00:48:00 - 00:48:15 | Speaker 3:

where's that podcast i want to hear that i know david michelson is his name i think the guy from snopes but um yeah um uh i guess that's all i have thank you power where

00:48:15 - 00:48:27 | Speaker 1:

hello and welcome to top story i read an article that said you should wash your sheets twice a

00:48:27 - 00:48:52 | Speaker 2:

week do you wash your sheets twice a week oh hell no that seems like too much to me i mean i would agree with an article that says you should do it once a week although i don't even come close to that i'm probably like once a month but i would like to do it a lot more i should it's not that difficult and it's such a big payoff when you do it when you crawl into bed the night you washed your sheets and everything is crisp and clean i love that feeling i don't do it enough that

00:48:52 - 00:49:56 | Speaker 3:

surprises me because you're a real you know you're such a tidy and clean person and i know you i mean you i think you're a much more thorough and deep cleaner than i am certainly like your whole rituals for your bathroom of like taking everything out and then cleaning it kind of top to bottom and then putting everything back in i'm impressed by i will say i'm pretty good with the beds well i'm once a week i'm not a twice a weaker but the key i feel is um not having any young children i have nothing but time andrew no the key is i was just thinking of our listeners who are so harried because they have kids and they're like yeah must be nice i'm trying to be you my guy um the key is having at least three full sets of sheets that's what i that's what i have learned because the reason that i used to not wash my sheets as frequently i did not select this article it's from pocket by the way i did not select this article to brag on my sheet washing system but i just noticed this you know how this happened well i had to buy some sheets when i moved down here And then also we got some free sheets from like Brooklinen or something.

00:49:56 - 00:51:07 | Speaker 2:

We got a couple of nice company sheets from a couple of companies. And I somehow found myself with three full sets of sheets I will say this I only wash my duvet cover every other week But on the weekly It's just like a Sunday thing now Strip the bed down Throw the sheets in the wash But then I put the other clean sheets That are already clean somewhere Onto the bed And the reason that's big is because I believe it or not As an allegedly functional adult member of society For a long time I don't know if I had like multiple sets of sheets that i liked so you take the sheets off you wash them and now you're playing a dangerous game dano because if you don't get those things done and back on the bed by like you know 10 p.m you have that absolutely horrible feeling of walking into your bedroom and realizing yes there are no sheets and now i need to make it just let me put a towel down on this pillow and just cuddle up under a you know some kind of less than ideal circumstance what i've noticed is that because so i just put the other set of sheets on and then the pressure's off and then i wash those other sheets and it just doesn't it has somehow completely changed my relationship with this one household task for

00:51:07 - 00:52:40 | Speaker 1:

what it's worth i um had a little story i wanted to tell you luke that i forgot about do you remember that i used to love that eight sleep system that we advertised on the show and it was a a mattress and then a mattress cover that you could put on um then you could control the heat on each side of the bed, you can make your side of the bed cooler or warmer. I loved this thing, I ended up we had a nice mattress in existence already. So I ended up just using the cover on our existing mattress, and then the little computer that sits next to it, next to the bed, and then you have the app. And I loved it. I, you know, would tell everybody about how much I love this eight sleep system. And then unfortunately, back in our old apartment, I'm going to say a couple of years ago we had taken off all the sheets off the bed to launder them i didn't make it right away because in this case i wanted to like kind of just whatever i just didn't make it right away um and one of our cats got up there got its claw accidentally into the mattress cover which has all these little micro tubes carrying water that is being heated or cooled as need be and all of a sudden that thing sprung a leak and we had to take it off the bed and genevieve and i spent a lot of time trying to repair it and we just couldn't then you kindly gave us yours i think we talked about the show i hope it's okay to say that you said hey listen i'm not using this you guys can use my mattress cover if you'd like you kept that i think you even carried around in your car for like four months still yeah so what i did was didn't have your cooties the yeah what's

00:52:40 - 00:52:45 | Speaker 2:

that it didn't have your cooties on it no because i used the mattress but not the cover yeah it was

00:52:45 - 00:53:52 | Speaker 1:

like a real gift to the i'm still sleeping on the mattress great yeah um anyway andrew we already used that joke once this season i know i um i anyway so then you gave me that that system and then it sat in our bedroom for months and months and months and then you told me oh by the way i have a king size system you have a king size bed right i'm like no we have a queen size bed i'm like oh no so that was also a reason why i didn't feel like digging this thing out of the box and setting it up thinking that it wasn't going to fit whatever we move houses we move the eight sleep system it's a conversation do we bring this with us to the new place or not okay fine while we're in this moment of upheaval when we get our bedroom set up we'll see if we can fit this king size thing onto the queen size mattress it miraculously works it was a little bit bulky but i could tuck it under the mattress totally fine put some sheets over top of it it kept everything contained The first few months we lived here I was in hog heaven again Luke making my side of the bed cool In the summertime and then as the Temperatures changed

00:53:52 - 00:53:56 | Speaker 2:

Like the McDLT of sleeping The hot side hot and the cool side cool

00:53:56 - 00:55:29 | Speaker 1:

And then guess what happened We got a kitten Are you kidding me And this time we made sure Anytime the bed was stripped not to have the cats in there But this time it didn't matter Bingo who's really gentle with his claws Our new little kitten like he'll kind of reach out and use it yeah I mean he'll get you every now and then if he's really rambunctious but mostly it's amazing because he uses his paws like constantly like he's using them like hands but he will reach up and sort of like cup your hand and bring it down to his face but he does a really good job of not using his nails he's so gentle this cat is incredible anyway that's not the case when he's got the zoomies and he's tearing around the house and you can hear his claws digging into everything and one day I came in and Genevieve was already asleep on the bed but she was sleeping on a towel for some reason I'm like oh no that's not a good sign and then she's like you know what it was super late at night and I realized this thing has sprung a little leak again but then in the middle of the night we're like no no this is not sleepable it was just seeping into the mattress oh no and this time we didn't even try to repair it we strip it off but the bad news is it sat there for Thank you.

00:55:00 - 00:55:12 | Speaker 2:

so long that our nice mattress now has a stain on it that looks like the worst thing in the possible world happened on a mattress. Is there anything worse than looking at a mattress that has a huge stain on it?

00:55:14 - 00:56:00 | Speaker 1:

It definitely tells a story. It tells the wrong story. I think about this when I'm in hotels a lot. Like, I'm like, if this mattress could talk. And then I have to tell myself, stop thinking about that. You're trying to go to sleep at a residence inn in Yonkers. like because if you think about it it's like actually that residence and i was happy because i i turned over in the sheets and i just got a huge hit of clorox and i was like thank you yeah housekeeping i want thank you for absolutely nuking this shit i appreciate that but yeah a big giant wet stain on the mattress or a watermark or whatever you want to call it does i mean that does make it seem like at that point i would probably pee on it just to take the opportunity if you're gonna wet the bed that's the time to do it seize carpe that diem my friend do you know

00:56:00 - 00:56:29 | Speaker 2:

what i literally thought i thought well thank god we moved and don't have any plans to move in the future because no you'll never look at it again and no mover will have to look at it like at least i know that that huge wet stain that takes up like a quarter of the mattress now uh which is fine you know it was just water it literally was just water coming out of the system but it you know it just kind of left a big water stain i'm like if we had movers coming in here and had to move our mattress i would just like it would be worth just not hiring movers for that move you

00:56:29 - 00:57:11 | Speaker 1:

have to hire the movers that carrie and i hired once who uh and i'm not trying to be glib about a real problem in america but clearly did some amount of drugs on the ferry between seattle and port townsend showed up in seattle remember this was the guy named jazz yeah showed up in seattle Completely great Got everything into the truck Showed up in Port Townsend In a completely different mental state Falling asleep Standing up And then also Carrying some of our things Out of our house in Port Townsend That we were moving into This guy Walked into the house With an armful of stuff Turned around And walked back out of the house Losing track of if he was coming or going That guy would not have cared About a watermark on the mattress Andrew is my point

00:57:11 - 00:57:21 | Speaker 2:

No probably not That's a sad story I mean it's frustrating from a consumer standpoint but it's also just that depresses me oh i you know i mean it is

00:57:21 - 01:00:14 | Speaker 1:

depressing except i unfortunately see i see more i see more depressing examples of the way that the those drugs have ravaged folks every day right like it's a it's not a good um ranking system try to figure out the saddest expression of it but somehow somebody who's at least still able to get up and work at a moving company and ambulate and get around and do that stuff it's that's sort of high functioning unfortunately for for for that stuff now speaking of um bedroom activities i was trying to sleep this morning and i told you the new thing with the cat is since basically since i got back from this most recent trip is she is no longer just quietly hanging out in the living room waiting for me to get up whenever it is i get up in the morning she has now decided that when she is awake i will also be getting up or i will at least be opening the bedroom door so she can hang out with me and um so i've tried different solutions i've tried uh earplugs i've tried putting a pillow the other pillow over my head uh i've those are the two solutions i've tried really and um you've exhausted your options i mean there's nothing else i can do other than you know putting some kind of tranquilizer in her cat food i don't know um this morning she really took a two new level because she and i'm not kidding andrew this is intentional she turned the roomba on 5 30 in the morning like and she had been meowing and i had been kind of like thinking this will just this will stop she'd done her whole this is her her routine she meows from one of the doors there's like two doors into this bedroom she meows at one of the doors then if i don't respond she goes around through the bathroom to the other door she claws at the carpet from that because it has a more of a gap I guess and she had done this a couple times and I thought well it's really early maybe she'll just go calm down and the next thing you know I hear just now the problem with her activating the Roomba is there are like at any one time 17 bottle like plastic bottle caps and also earplugs distributed throughout the nooks and crannies of my apartment because her favorite thing to do is for me to throw these earplugs or these bottle caps or even And I have this tent, this ping pong ball that has an eyeball on it. Anything I can throw that bounces around on the hardwood floor, she will go catch and bring back to me. That's all she wants to do all day long, which I will put down as a win because it's kind of fun. And I can Tucker her out. Thank God she at least likes that. Like, can you imagine if she was just as hyper as she is and there was also nothing fun that she wanted to do for like a long time? Like, this is at least a thing that I can do to wear her out. But the Roomba cannot be running in the house Until I have gone around and picked up Every little thing of hers That would get jammed up in the Roomba And the Roomba also just has a big button on top of it She now knows what that button is It's insane

01:00:14 - 01:00:19 | Speaker 2:

It probably happened accidentally at first She's done it before accidentally

01:00:19 - 01:00:56 | Speaker 1:

And again Honestly if you were I don't know what I expect from the fine people At iRobot Who makes the Roomba but it is almost like could you design something that would be more fun for a cat how about a giant round thing that if you hit it it turns green is that it's like if you were doing a study of animals and you were trying to do some kind of like you know behaviorism or whatever that's the kind of thing you would design or for like a young child like it's really ideal for a kind of a relatively primitive brain that can learn to do something fun that also will now make the human

01:00:56 - 01:01:00 | Speaker 2:

come out of their bedroom i mean honestly the fact that they put like fake mouse ears on it

01:01:00 - 01:01:04 | Speaker 1:

is really like that's the most galling i feel like that's kind of trolling me at this point

01:01:04 - 01:01:08 | Speaker 2:

sure yeah well let's just see if it keeps happening or not or has it happened more than once now

01:01:08 - 01:03:07 | Speaker 1:

well no this is the first time that it was she's done it before accidentally like just at a random point in the day this felt to me like she was escalating things and i took a picture of her which i'll actually send you when i find i had to go turn the room off and then i was like well damn it i'm up now so i opened the bedroom door and then she of course just like jumps up on the bed and is just like staring at me like a lion in the jungle in the middle of the night it's borderline terrifying but i am going to have to figure something out with her and the sleep cycle or andrew i'm going to have to just say my plan worked and by that i mean i kind of wanted to get a cat because i felt like one of the issues for me over the last few years since i moved to Portland is I am not responsible for anyone or anything really I mean you know in a global sense I am I'm responsible for my fellow man and for my daughter who's an adult and for the people I love but on a day-to-day basis I'm pretty unsupervised and I thought it wouldn't be the worst thing for me to have a small creature that I can take care of and love and bond with and also maybe get up you know with in the morning and I thought well a puppy is going to be way too much work for me plus if rudy heard it'd be a whole i'd have to unfollow rudy on instagram and be a situation so um i thought oh let's get a cat and i have to be honest it has really worked in that i really love this cat i have so much fun with her i might be as bonded to her as any pet i've ever had and now you know what i did the last two days i got up at 5 30 in the morning and got a shitload of stuff done because she was activating the roomba like this was kind of what i was looking for maybe not 5 30 but like I was looking for something that was going to break me out of my own only being accountable to myself for my wants and needs therefore being able to drink till all hours and just kind of generally become like slovenly now there's some like thing that kind of needs me or at least wants me to pay attention to it and this is kind of what I was

01:03:07 - 01:03:39 | Speaker 2:

signing up for and even though they're not necessarily going to be any more funny because of this at least you kind of understand all the millions of cartoons i i think i've mentioned oh that's actually big i follow um i follow not just the new yorker cartoon segment section on instagram but i also follow a million people who write new yorker cartoons on instagram so i find a lot of them in my feed and i can't tell you like what is the percentage of new yorker cartoons that have something to do with cats waking you up in the morning a pretty big percent i would say

01:03:39 - 01:04:14 | Speaker 1:

you know like i'm not even kidding the fact that all that stuff now is funny and relatable to me is not a is not an inconsequential element of this because i didn't care about that stuff at all and now i think it's funny and it's a lot of the it's a lot of the content on the internet it's it's most of what i'm putting up on instagram and it's most of what i'm interested that other people are posting on instagram like it has opened a kind of large world for me of something that i give now a shit about that i previously gave no shits about yeah because

01:04:14 - 01:04:28 | Speaker 2:

there are fewer there are fewer new yorker cartoons about i guess your cat coming into the living room with a half living or half dead depending how you look at it rabbit so that it's going to mangle in front of you because that was your experience with cats prior to this that

01:04:28 - 01:05:00 | Speaker 1:

was rough and you know i was thinking about that this morning between 5 15 and when the roomba went on as i was tossing and turning and you're sort of like still half asleep and you're having kind of like crazy thoughts and my crazy thought was okay when this remodeling project is done and we relocate full-time up to this other house um maybe bubbles just becomes an outdoor indoor outdoor cap because i was like i was literally in my mind i was like scanning the square footage of the house and so there's this adu this like studio

01:05:00 - 01:06:00 | Speaker 2:

That I'm working on with my dad intermittently We're going to work on it again in January That's going to be where I do TBTL from And also where I'll probably Be living while the rest Of the stuff on the house is happening And I was thinking that ADU Is smaller than my apartment So I was like that's not a solution I can't live this way like where will I put the cat And then even the house is pretty tiny So even when the house is all done I was basically panicking Because I was like I can't have a cat Doing this at 5.30 in the morning for the rest of for the next 15 years of my life so i was going into panic mode and one of the things i was thinking was well maybe she's indoor outdoor maybe she can just get up and run around and then i was like but then i'm gonna if she survives it like if she doesn't get eaten by a coyote then i'm gonna have like small dead animals coming into my house again which is also i was like i was just like there are no good options but again that's the desperation of a a man at 5 5 20 in the morning who's just you know doesn't want to get out of bed i've always um i always like

01:06:00 - 01:07:14 | Speaker 1:

the idea of an indoor outdoor cat we have some neighbor with some neighborhood cats around here that kind of have the run of the neighborhood in fact one was drinking out of our um our bird bath the other day um which i found to be very cute um but like you know we've lived in other places where i was like we can probably just make our cat an indoor outdoor cat like i remember kind advocating for Theo to be an indoor outdoor cat when we lived in New Hampshire. So I'm like, this is a great little neighborhood. It's not on a super busy road. It's like tucked in a corner near a park, like let Theo do his thing. Genevieve has a couple of concerns. I think primarily the safety of the animal, but then also the safety of the birds out there. Genevieve is such a bird lover. She does not want a cat out there hunting birds. You know, I got to say now that, you know, time has has moved on and we're living in this particular neighborhood and we have our new little kitty like first of all professor banana she would never i don't even think she wants to go outside at this point she doesn't want to do anything but sleep and bingo won't let her um but uh but bingo like the idea of letting bingo go outside just like breaks my heart i'm just like no way you are my little guy you stay in here like i will i i hate the idea of him running wild outside with all the dangers that are out there see i think

01:07:14 - 01:08:14 | Speaker 2:

because um because olive the the cat that i had in bellingham was so wily and like literally i don't think there was ever a time maybe there was a week where all of was indoors but there was almost no time that she wasn't just doing her thing like as an indoor outdoor and i would just see she just and she was just so kind of like um what's the word just like capable it also helped that we lived in a neighborhood and not that there wasn't probably the occasional you know coyote or porcupine or whatever that was wandering around that we didn't see it was a lot less rural than where this other house is that i'm that i'm working on and so it's like i just think uh that i was never i was never really worried for olive like there was no there were not very many days where she didn't come home at some point and eventually i just real i i sort of thought she'll always come home so i'm kind of thinking that with bubbles but also bubbles is has absolutely no survival instincts that i can like or at least has never been out in the world so that's the

01:08:14 - 01:08:57 | Speaker 1:

thing yeah because when you got when you got uh olive like i don't remember the circumstances but like it just sort of feels like if you if you're doing that from the beginning that might be one thing or certainly like i have some friends who recently adopted cats because they they were just hanging outside their house you know they were already outdoor cats so that's the relationship so they started feeding them now they're indoor outdoor cats and like you know that's just that is their very nature but like at this point bringing a little bingo into this house like I already feel like the door is closed on that if he got outside and honestly I think the chances are he'd probably do fine even in our somewhat busy neighborhood like I think cats have really really good survival skills but I just hate the thought of it yeah yeah I don't think

01:08:57 - 01:09:09 | Speaker 2:

I'm gonna do that unless uh Bubbles tries to wake me up at 5 30 a.m. when I'm in the EU and then I'm going Fred Flintstone on it, just picking this saber tooth up and dropping it outside and slamming the door.

01:09:09 - 01:09:12 | Speaker 1:

Remember that part? I forgot about that part until you said that.

01:09:13 - 01:09:16 | Speaker 2:

Was that the intro or the end of the show? I can't remember.

01:09:16 - 01:09:20 | Speaker 1:

I think it was. Was it the end of the intro? That's how I feel. I don't know.

01:09:22 - 01:09:47 | Speaker 2:

All right. Let's do a little music for your... Oh, we did. We actually... Hey, this happened, Andrew. We got through the... Talking about Sheetz, talking about Cat. We mentioned that we've got this fun holiday event coming up at 5 p.m. West Coast today. We've actually, for once, covered everything that we had on the list for a Friday, which is very exciting. And now we should talk music for your weekend. What song would you like to play for the listeners?

01:09:47 - 01:10:00 | Speaker 1:

You know, Luke, sometimes you choose music for your weekend. Other times it chooses you. I just played something from our friend Lini not too long ago, several weeks ago now. she has a

01:10:00 - 01:10:48 | Speaker 3:

a new album out under the name Leany, but she also performs, as most people know, under the name Prom Queen. That's her band. And she posted something on her Instagram that I had forgotten about. Prom Queen does a cover of a Doors song called Wintertime Love. And I think this song has been kicking around for quite some time. I looked at the YouTube page. I think it was posted like eight or nine years ago or something. And I think I'd heard this in the past before, but had forgotten about it and I'll tell you what ever since this popped up in Celine's Instagram I have been listening to it and it's been going through my head like on a loop it's like again that's why I say like I didn't even pick this song this song just attached itself to me this week and it's been constant it's been the soundtrack of my week so let's take a listen to this this is Prom Queen doing the Doors song Wintertime Love

01:10:48 - 01:11:32 | Speaker 4:

Wintertime winds blow cold The season falling in love I'm hoping to be Winter so cold Is that the reason Keeping you warm Your hands touching me Come with me dance, my dear Winter's so cold this year And you are so warm, my wintertime love, to me Wintertime winter

01:11:32 - 01:11:35 | Speaker 3:

Very seasonal. Now it'll go through your head for the next week or so.

01:11:35 - 01:11:43 | Speaker 2:

Can I say something that is going to be, it'll sound like maybe a mixed compliment? Towards me or towards Celine?

01:11:43 - 01:11:45 | Speaker 3:

Because I don't care what you say about Celine.

01:11:45 - 01:11:53 | Speaker 2:

Towards the Lizard King. oh yeah go ahead i'm sure that i like leanie's version better oh yeah me too i think i do too

01:11:53 - 01:12:15 | Speaker 3:

i mean i'm a doors fan i mean i'm not i never put you for a doors fan i'm not a proud doors fan but i am i am a shameful doors fan until i get together with my friend uh allison and then we will basically sing the entire 12 minutes of the song the soft parade together and then you're like that's why you get into the doors yes i mean i already played omaha by counting

01:12:15 - 01:13:15 | Speaker 2:

crows today so i can't really i can't really give you any grief on that but that just that sounds that sounds like a thing that i'll probably go ahead and pass on being a part of but i would like to proactively put forward the music of somebody who goes under the stage name of little sims little sims is a british rapper um and also an actress i read on wikipedia um she just put out this um new album called no thank you she won a mercury prize um with her last album which is like the big one in england i think um and uh this song is called gorilla and it just really slaps it also doesn't hurt that little sims has a british accent i'm a sucker for any british accent in rapping um going back to slick rick i was gonna say that's exactly but like kate tempest i was really indicate Tempest and I just love I love a British accent in rapping so can we hear a little bit of Little Sims song Gorilla from No Thank You

01:13:36 - 01:14:35 | Speaker 1:

and smoked cigar name one time where I didn't deliver silent figure I was just on the ends dropping gems with my friends I got a 3310 and a pack of blems then got the gold full black circle back again rapping when nothing progressive was happening ooh pain tolerance couldn't break us pay homage if you respect how we came up cool trying to get to the paper hitting from Jamaica might do me a favour true big simmer dipping ten toes in that ice cold river Bank got bigger Been a different species Choosing a lock I've been waiting to unleash these It's a no-show If you can't guarantee fees I ain't got one threat to consider Heaven and earth Attached to one pillar Rest in peace to Mac Miller New Sims dropped to shake The whole shit up What's next? We'll be here for months Talking about prospects Staying at my job Yes, sir There you go Lil' Sims I like that

01:14:35 - 01:14:59 | Speaker 3:

this is driving me bananas because I know that I've heard this before but I cannot figure out why or where I would have heard it maybe you know every now and then I like to switch it over to KEXP and I wonder if I heard it there yeah yeah because I actually I don't do that enough honestly every now and then I'm like oh yeah we live in a city with one of the greatest alternative music stations like in the country and I you know me I love the idea of being able to

01:15:00 - 01:15:13 | Speaker 2:

So turn it on the radio and just kind of take what is being broadcast over the air, right, as opposed to dialing something up. And so, yeah, that's a real treasure. But anyway, that's the only place I can think that I heard that. But, yeah, I love that. That's a great vibe.

01:15:13 - 01:15:34 | Speaker 1:

This whole album – well, I'll be honest with you. I've only listened to, like, five of the tracks, but it's really good. No Thank You is the album from Little Sims. That's little, not low. Over in the U.K., they keep it, you know, they keep it formal. It's the Queen's English. it's little sims which is interesting isn't that where i mean i always think of a british accent

01:15:34 - 01:15:48 | Speaker 2:

as kind of skipping over those things right just sort of like i remember my friend always saying if you can say what a closet then you can you can do a british accent which is reductive and unfair and not true but and that was a abomination what just came out of my mouth but i remember him just

01:15:48 - 01:16:07 | Speaker 1:

saying like don't say water just say what uh that's i mean i'm i am i'm not going to throw any stones from my glass house of accent problems, but I feel like I don't know if that's quite that didn't sound quite as maybe as British as your friend thought it sounded. Well, he's

01:16:07 - 01:16:21 | Speaker 2:

not saying it to you. I'm saying it to you and I do terrible impressions but there is a certain like there is a certain I think probably I'm guessing probably from less high class areas where they sort of like kind of like don't don't

01:16:21 - 01:16:25 | Speaker 1:

pronounce. Are you trying to say hello governor? No, I

01:16:25 - 01:16:28 | Speaker 2:

I was trying to say water closet, which was a different word.

01:16:28 - 01:18:32 | Speaker 1:

I heard L.O. Gubbna. All right. Our listener suggestion is from Nate. Now, remember, I was doing this show from a Super 8 a while ago, and I was pleasantly surprised at the Super 8. And listener Nate said, all this Super 8 motel talk has the song Super 8 by Jason Isbell stuck in my head, which is a good thing. In fact, the entire Southeastern album is worth a weekend listen. powa out um signed listener nate now i was thinking of jason isbell last night andrew because we were doing the show at revolution hall and we had jason isbell and um and his wife amanda shires play live wire some years ago this was kind of like right before he went pretty stratospheric and um so he played the show they played the show and it was really great but they were so nice So as to The crowd was only there To see those two people They could not have cared less that Livewire was happening It was a total sellout Because of Jason Isbell and Amanda Shires Anyway, they were like, hey, do you want us to play A couple of extra songs after the show Just because we're here, we got our gear set up I was like, yes So after the show was done, they played two songs And I sat in the front row of the audience and watched And then when it was done, I was going to jump on stage And be like, Jason Isbell, Amanda Shires, everybody And I was in a suit, and I tried to jump on stage And I destroyed my shin on the corner of the stage Destroyed it Like blood running down my leg into my socks And I had to like walk over I had to stanky leg walk over to the microphone And say Jason Isbell and Amanda Shires And last night I almost did that again At Revolution Hall It wasn't for the same purpose It was because I had been talking to some folks after the show And then I needed to get back up on stage To say goodbye to one of our guests and i was in a suit and i tried to leap on stage and my entire shin flashed before my eyes because i almost did the exact same thing that sounds rough that's i gotta answer the all i heard was

01:18:32 - 01:18:39 | Speaker 2:

you say jason isabel's a sellout that's all i i heard in that everybody get that quote that is

01:18:39 - 01:19:05 | Speaker 1:

that quote for the article quote but you know what that's the quote you know andrew we're trying to we're trying to generate more kind of like interest in the show via various platforms so if you could tweet out luke burbank and then we're like jason isbell is a sellout and then dash luke burbank and then a link to this show we'd get some clicks i wonder i'm sure that probably elon musk would would would elevate it to the most popular tweet on the platform

01:19:05 - 01:19:27 | Speaker 2:

i'm trying to think like because you did say the word jason isbell and the word sellout i'm wondering if i could pull that out of context doing that thing with like the bracket quote to fill in words and then the ellipse to cut to skip over other words like could i actually mangle that into something by being true to the quote but also misquoting you at the same time i'd say give it a

01:19:27 - 01:19:59 | Speaker 1:

shot sure you don't have anything else going on this afternoon we're not doing a big production tonight with our with our tens uh at 5 p.m west coast time on zoom so i'd say that's a that's a project you should take on um that's gonna do it for today's show and gonna do it for this week of broadcasting thank you everyone for hanging out with us we'll go out with this jason isbell song suggested by listener nate and hopefully see a lot of you later today at 5 p.m west coast for the rest of you we'll see you on monday with more imaginary radio until then have a great friday take care of yourselves and please remember no mountain too tall and good luck to

01:20:00 - 01:20:20 | Speaker 3:

just because somebody's eating didn't go so well if i ever get back to bristol i'm better off sleeping in the county jail i don't want to die in a super eight motel

01:20:20 - 01:20:50 | Speaker 4:

Having such a sweet night The audience is just right Drinking like a pirate dude Don't want to sleep yet But it's a good bet Raise more hell than near Do a couple rails And chase your own tail And talk about the bad old days Trim her in a t-shirt Telling me your heart

01:20:50 - 01:21:07 | Speaker 2:

Let's say you love the counting crows And they break up And then the fan site, Crow's Nest Says that they're never going to get back together again And you accept that

01:21:07 - 01:21:11 | Speaker 1:

I'd be a tough pill to swallow I'm a Duritz head through and through

01:21:11 - 01:21:12 | Speaker 2:

Right Power out
