Luke and Andrew try very hard to talk about the upcoming plans for the TBTL-a-Thon, but boy do they get distracted easily. But the important thing is that you mark your calendars for the 4000th episode, live in Seattle, on Saturday, July 29th. Also, Ron Disantis' own announcement yesterday went even worse than his most vitriolic rivals could have possibly hoped. Photo from the Cleveland International Air Show 2018 by Erik Drost

to me now well all right hello good morning and welcome everyone to a thursday edition of tbtl the show that just might be too beautiful to live doesn't stink it doesn't have an odor it's

00:01:07 - 00:01:14 | Speaker 1:

literally clean my name is luke burbank i am your host coffee in the big tank coming to you for the

00:01:14 - 00:01:52 | Speaker 5:

final time from a glass box somewhere outside of ramona california i'm in a glass case of emotion If anyone needs a recommendation on probably the best golf course attached restaurant to eat at in the outskirts of Ramona, California, I am your guy. We went to one last night. We may get into that coming up. Also, lots to talk about actually here on episode 3952 in a collector's series. Let the fun begin. Brands. We use them, but do we trust them?

00:01:52 - 00:01:54 | Speaker 1:

There's a Hidden Rally Ranch party in my mouth.

00:01:55 - 00:02:57 | Speaker 5:

A new list has been released of the most trusted brands in America. We will tell you what the top spot, who is inhabiting the top spot. Also, Ron DeSantis wants the top spot in U.S. politics. He announced yesterday that he is running for president, and he decided to do it on Twitter spaces. And it didn't go super great. It was literally a major disaster. You know yesterday we were talking about baseball But we said this isn't a story about baseball This is a story about humanity And I would like to say I don't think this is a story about politics This is a story about failure At every single level And it couldn't have happened To a nicer group of guys So we will get into that And we'll also get into the Blur's Days Because it's a Thursday A.K.A. Blur's Day And we'll talk to this guy Longest running co-bro of the show may be best known for his depictions of the tall ships. He is Andrew Walsh. Oh, hey, y'all said my name. And he's joining me right now. Good morning, my friend.

00:02:57 - 00:03:09 | Speaker 4:

Uh-oh, I just deleted a Blur's Day, and now I'm looking for it in my deleted items folder. This is why you should not leave your homework to the last minute. Okay, I found it.

00:03:10 - 00:03:13 | Speaker 5:

Have you considered just reading all the Blur's Days as Columbo?

00:03:13 - 00:03:30 | Speaker 4:

that got me out of a few jams when i was a kid passing grade exactly that took me a second it took me a second to get what you were talking about and it turns out it's an extremely personal moment from my own life from my own history so that was related to a time when you

00:03:30 - 00:03:34 | Speaker 5:

you did not get your homework done and then at the last minute my parents were like well have you

00:03:34 - 00:03:45 | Speaker 4:

considered just doing a presentation as columbo and i said who's columbo and they said roll up a piece of brown construction paper stick it in your mouth we'll take care of the rest

00:03:45 - 00:04:04 | Speaker 5:

Andrew I have so many little small insignificant things that I want to talk to you about here at the top of the show including am I a bathrobe guy now a recent um a recent interaction with the song closer to fine by the indigo girls but actually you know everybody madames and

00:04:04 - 00:04:05 | Speaker 6:

Miss

00:04:05 - 00:04:22 | Speaker 5:

Woz? We have an actually big announcement that we should get to before any of that other stuff derails us. And this is also something that we revealed in the new TBTL newsletter. How can people get the new TBTL newsletter, Andrew? I always wonder.

00:04:22 - 00:04:51 | Speaker 4:

Luke, have I not told you? I'm so sorry that's not me. If you go to tbtl.net and scroll down a little ways, just a little ways, you'll see something that says extra, extra, sign up for the new TBTL newsletter that's all you have to do well also I guess put in your email address but that's all you have to do and then you'll start getting the new newsletter we sent out our inaugural newsletter yesterday Luke I was a little nervous about it we have a whole new system for sending things out we made a little video you and me chatting it up

00:04:51 - 00:05:00 | Speaker 5:

you were nervous but in a way that made me feel like good about the future the prospects of TVTL because like Are you talking?

00:05:00 - 00:05:12 | Speaker 1:

Talking about that ridiculous text chain that I looped you in on, and as soon as me and some other people on that chain went back and forth like four times, I was like, why did I loop Luke in on this? You probably totally were tuning that out.

00:05:13 - 00:06:20 | Speaker 2:

I probably was, but no, I mean, you sent me like a trial run of the new newsletter update video. You were just really erring on the side of caution because, of course, this is the debut of the new TBTL newsletter. It's the first line of the movie. It's got to be on the money. Like we got, you know, we we're not trying to pull a DeSantis here. And the irony that you put so much more thought into the first new TVTL newsletter than did the people handling a candidate for the presidency of the United States is really something to think about. But anyway, you know, I appreciate that you that you really wanted to make sure that everything worked the way we were hoping. And it seemed to it all looked real good. And and in that video, we announced the details. It's just being cleaner and cleaner. I use the shorter one, Andrew, I use the shorter drumroll for when we're on the podcast and I use the longer one for when we're making videos. Because, as you know, people want to spend all day watching a video. Right. Right. Exactly.

00:06:20 - 00:06:28 | Speaker 1:

That's what they say. Make the video stuff very, very long form. Make the podcast just short and tight, which we'll do today, keeping it just under two and a half hours.

00:06:28 - 00:07:30 | Speaker 2:

So the big announcement that's in the video on the new TBTL newsletter is that we have we've zeroed in on a date for the TBTL 4000th episode, which will be a live recording of the show. And it's going to be July 29th. That's a Saturday in Seattle, Washington. We have not fully, completely dotted the I's and crossed the T's on the venue, so we're leaving that information a little vague at this moment. But just know, Saturday, July 29th, that evening, we will be in Seattle, Washington. We will be recording the 4,000th episode of the program, and we would love to see you there, wherever there is. So your job right now, dear listener, is to circle on your calendar Saturday, July 29th, because that is when it is happening. So if you're thinking of traveling in for a TBTL event, this is the one, the 4000th episode, TBTL 4K. Just think about how much more crisp and clear TBTL will be when it's finally in 4K.

00:07:30 - 00:07:37 | Speaker 1:

Shit. This is not the time to get into it, but I got to ask you, are we putting on motion blurring or not when we do the 4000th show?

00:07:37 - 00:07:41 | Speaker 2:

And to that end, I'd like a moment of your time to talk about video interpolation.

00:07:42 - 00:07:48 | Speaker 1:

Hold on. Let me put on a flight suit really quickly and really get into the details of this. Thanks, Tom Cruise.

00:07:48 - 00:08:30 | Speaker 2:

Wow. You want to talk about a digression because we're here making important announcements about TBTL. Yesterday, Becca and I hiked up to something called Potato Chip Rock, which is on the Mount Woodson Trail, which is here in the Poway, California area. and uh it was uh first of all i had actually done this hike before one time but i forgot it's pretty steep and uh it definitely was a it was a challenge for me do you screw out like kind of scramble at times no no no i mean it's a very well well maintained trail but it's just a lot of walking up a lot of stair like stairs that are made out of the rocks that have been dragged out of the hillside and then created so it was a real step where it didn't help that becca was jogging much

00:08:30 - 00:08:41 | Speaker 1:

of it i didn't enjoy that jogging back of the doing that thing like jogging backwards you have a white towel around her the back of her neck is shouting at you you can do it i love it um i love

00:08:41 - 00:09:48 | Speaker 2:

it when she uses her burgess meredith voice but um we got up there this is because because andrew you mentioned a flight suit this is why my brain is doing this twist right now we were up almost near the top of this thing and i think we're pretty near uh 29 palms here which is the i think that might even be the actual air force base that the movie top gun is allegedly based out of and um there were a couple of i'm just gonna say f-18s how do i know that i don't know that they were you know just say it with confidence they're vaguely blue angels looking kind of things i mean that the u.s fighter jet i don't know if it was an f-14 i don't know if it was an f-18 but there were two of them and we were so high we were at such a high elevation that was like we were almost like eye level with them as they were doing their training and let me tell you it kicked right back in whatever that thing that turns me into sloth from the goonies it happened i just started like walking down the trail trying to get a better view being like oh my gosh i cannot believe how how fascinated i am with those war machines which i do not support on any level other than

00:09:48 - 00:09:59 | Speaker 1:

i'm fascinated with them luke i mentioned this i feel like this comes up from time to time and i am being very serious about this like you and I will sometimes throw out ideas on the show about things we can do for content I am saying

00:10:00 - 00:10:55 | Speaker 2:

this on the show but not necessarily for the show we don't have to create content out of this but i would really this is a i don't know if his bucket list is a little bit of a strong word but you and i really need to just plan a trip somewhere that has a good air show and just spend the weekend there like i used to go to the air show in cleveland i don't know if you'd like to spend a weekend in cleveland luke will you make me the happiest go bro in the world and spend a weekend in cleveland with me are you burke lakefront airport um or are you i mean you know i know they have them out west you just described valhalla we gotta go like we really have to like that i i like the fact that you don't have to climb on any roofs to see the planes but you still get like man you get wing walkers you get you get the the terrifying scream of the planes across the sky it's good for the environment you get night walkers you get the white king You get finger-wagged by everybody who cares about the environment. It's great.

00:10:56 - 00:12:01 | Speaker 1:

I actually took a picture of, speaking of you enjoying the not having to climb on any roofs aspect, there was this one part of the trail where you kind of come around a bend, and most of the trail you're very protected, like you couldn't fall off the side, and then you just come around this bend, and it's definitely not unsafe, but the thing standing between you and a very far fall is not a lot. It's like a rock And it just kind of came out of nowhere And I took a picture of it because I was going to send it to you And be like I don't think you would like this And then I thought why would I send that to Andrew What's the point of that message Hey Andrew here's a thing you wouldn't like Let me hip you to that But then the funny part was when we came back down the trail Becca and I took a picture On this exact rock And I'm not exaggerating am I That I slipped when I stepped onto the rock For the photo She has me completely tuned out Doing work with the AirPods in But I actually I mean I didn't slip like I didn't fall to the Fall to the ground as it were but my foot Literally slipped Andrew Yeah just a little slip to remind you

00:12:01 - 00:12:09 | Speaker 2:

Of the Thin line between Stay humble I'm sorry you were starting to say though

00:12:09 - 00:12:11 | Speaker 1:

I was talking about the fear of heights

00:12:11 - 00:14:01 | Speaker 2:

Oh no I was just sort of Talking over you I was just saying that like I don't think I mean photos will sometimes give me that sensation But it's not like torture it's like I was scrolling through Reddit today. I don't know why I do this. I guess it's because maybe I got on Reddit more when I stopped using Twitter so much. I don't know. But it is kind of a habit of mine to open up Reddit and kind of just mindlessly scroll for a few minutes when I wake up in the morning. A lot of people wake up and they just smoke a cigarette. I just go right to Reddit, which is maybe slightly more dangerous. Equally good for the body? And there's a sub category that I used to love or a subreddit, I should say, that's called mildly infuriating. And it used to be good. It would be like, look, all of these things are in a nice row, except for this one line is out of order. You know, like I remember submitting one where I was sitting in some sort of a tap room years and years and years ago. And all the taps, when they installed the spigots, they were too close together. So like the taps start straight at one end, but then they get more and more bent over. And I was just like, that's like mildly infuriating. right or i don't think i don't even think mildly or a classic one just infuriating is like a yellow line painted down the road right across of a manhole cover and then somebody replaces the manhole cover but the yellow line doesn't match up right like that's that was the kind of classic mildly infuriating things of life today i'm just scrolling through and i see a big picture of just like a nasty nasty nasty cat litter box and it's just like mildly infuriating my roommate refused us to clean the litter box more than once a month and the bathroom stinks it's like that's not mildly infuriating that's just like a gross ass thing that you're living with that's you've you've totally bastard and again we are making a big announcement here but it's just important that i get out here and say that's not mildly infuriating that's gross that's infuriating

00:14:01 - 00:14:21 | Speaker 1:

but that's not what this sub was about no mild mildly infuriating if i remember right Was things like someone cutting a pumpkin pie But doing it in a very non-logical way Where you're not cutting it into equal-sized pieces You're doing it just sort of wrong That's the kind of thing that is mildly infuriating

00:14:21 - 00:14:24 | Speaker 2:

Yeah, which I sometimes do to pizza, by the way But I don't show anybody, it's just my own thing

00:14:24 - 00:14:59 | Speaker 1:

Also, we're being mildly infuriating And this is on me, by the way This is 100% on me for hijacking the show But the second announcement that we want to mention I don't want to say announcement as much as clarification is. There seems to have been a little bit of confusion around when various TBTL-related events might be happening. And some folks were thinking that when the TBTL-a-thon was wrapped up, that was going to be maybe our big event. And that weekend is like the weekend of July 8th is the Saturday and July 9th is the Sunday. What we realized was we were getting – we didn't want to do a whole event.

00:15:00 - 00:16:40 | Speaker 2:

right after the Thawne and then try to re-martial all of the fans for a thing a month later for the 4,000th episode. And it seemed like the 4,000th episode was a bigger, rounder number and just kind of something that lent itself more also to a live recording. We haven't done a live show in front of a large group of listeners in a long time. So just to clarify, we are kind of toying with the idea of doing a very small kind of just like in classic tbtl fashion weird ass thing related to the thon at which we will talk about more if we decide to do it and when we need to give folks information but i just want to stress the big thing is going to be july 29th july 29th is that's when the 4000th episode is happening as you mentioned andrew on the video if you're sitting at home with your abacus and you're carefully charting how it would be that saturday july 29th we'd arrive at the four thousandth episode let's just say it's a little hollywood bookkeeping but go with it yeah right is that i don't know that i know that phrase hollywood bookkeeping i love it well the the real definition of hollywood bookkeeping if i have it right is that uh movies never make money on paper because a they might have to pay out the performers And the other people more money And B it's like a tax haven So I think it's actually called Hollywood Accounting And if I understand it right It refers to creative accounting That makes it so that even a movie That we all know made A billion dollars Somehow just broke exactly even Is my sense of what Hollywood Accounting is You know what

00:16:40 - 00:16:42 | Speaker 1:

Now I support the writers

00:16:42 - 00:17:14 | Speaker 2:

But you know what's You know what's interesting about that is it's also a thing in hollywood where you really want to brag that your movie is like made the most money of any right right right so maybe this doesn't apply to your uh you know um like what avatars and the like um but maybe there's a different like level of movie or maybe this was just coined before box office was something i wonder do you think they talked about box office in the 70s the way they do now like do you think it was a metric of success my feeling is probably

00:17:14 - 00:17:56 | Speaker 1:

not oh i do i think box office has been i think the big change now is that you're looking at the foreign market so much more and that like you're making these movies and like you know is it going to play in china like and like what are the box what are the global box office numbers like but i think yeah i think 70s i'm sure they were i mean i think that a lot of the traditions around like movie release dates kind of like music too remember it always tuesdays were the new release for music i don't think that's the case anymore i'm sorry tuesdays were the day for new musical releases let's take the words put them in order um but uh yeah i think box office was a thing for a long time i just think that the scope of it has changed um but but again that's what i'm i guess

00:17:56 - 00:18:22 | Speaker 2:

i'm what you're hearing in my voice is me worrying that i totally have misunderstood what the term hollywood accounting has meant all these years because again it does seem it does seem like We're talking about two different things Could you potentially brag That your movie was The biggest earner of the year But then also submit To the IRS Or whoever monitors these things That this movie actually lost money or only barely broke even

00:18:22 - 00:19:08 | Speaker 1:

I've been where you are before I didn't hear the nervousness in your voice But you pointed it out So here, let me just read a sentence for you That is going to make you rest easy And even easier As this goes on, I think you're going to like this sentence more and more Wow, yes See, you haven't seen Sleep Easy Hutch Rhymes, have you? No. Veeves and I can't see it. I only know it from you and Veeves saying it. Yeah, oh my God. Steven Weber, Swoozie Kurtz, put it in my veins. Hollywood accounting. This is from a website called en.wikipedia.org. Hollywood accounting, also known as Hollywood bookkeeping. Isn't that what you started by saying? Yeah, I think it is. Is the opaque or creative accounting methods used by the film, TV, television, and music industry to budget and record profits for creative projects so you got i probably most of the

00:19:08 - 00:19:34 | Speaker 2:

neighborhood yeah i'll take it it's like i'm in the neighborhood of ramona california right now but can't figure out still can't figure out where i am the whole time that i've been down here filming and talking to people and eating in restaurants including a restaurant we didn't know was at a golf course yesterday people going where are you staying and i go i don't know it's up at the top of a mountain i don't understand where i am uh okay first of all the second

00:19:34 - 00:19:54 | Speaker 1:

sentence of the wikipedia which i won't read directly also supports exactly what you're saying it's about uh inflating or reducing numbers either way so that you don't have to pay um taxes and royalties and other profit sharing agreements on the actual numbers i mean you you nailed it luke i mean you just can't put it any other way than that you know what how crazy would it be if

00:19:54 - 00:20:00 | Speaker 2:

this i've orchestrated this whole thing so that i could for one feel good pretty solid w just to get

00:20:00 - 00:20:17 | Speaker 1:

just to feel something again okay one last thing about this house that you're staying in before we get back to the quote-unquote announcement that we're doing um i told you when you described the house in the woods that you're staying in you know this just like very modern glass um structure

00:20:17 - 00:20:23 | Speaker 2:

i said oh yeah that's of emotion that's the kind of stuff that i always build in minecraft like

00:20:23 - 00:20:46 | Speaker 1:

just glass as much glass as possible and whatever and i don't think that that is unusual in fact Did our friend Annie at American Public Media copy you on the email that had an article about some architects who had to build a beautiful, beautiful home exactly like the type that you and I are talking about? And the inspiration for it was their client's Minecraft house.

00:20:47 - 00:20:53 | Speaker 2:

Yes. And the client, I believe, works for I'm just going to go back to this for some reason. A large software concern on the east side.

00:20:53 - 00:20:55 | Speaker 1:

See, I scanned the details.

00:20:55 - 00:22:32 | Speaker 2:

It was written in Sunset Magazine, which I'm thinking about resubscribing to. And by that, I mean subscribing to I feel like my grandma Alice, my dad's mom, always had some copies of Sunset Magazine around the condo in Bellevue. And I think I think Sunset might really be up my alley. It's like I believe, you know, just a lot of sort of beauty shots of nice homes and then people doing landscaping, which really sounds like a good read to me at this stage of life. But it was in Sunset Magazine. And I'll tell you, Andrew, what my thought was as I read it and as I looked at this unbelievably gorgeous modern home and all the touches built in an old Boy Scout camp land. I looked at it and I thought I really this guy works for, you know, for for Microsoft. I thought I got into the wrong business, man. Like that was all I could think was I'm I like trying to make this funky cabin cottage place, you know, I'm in year three or something of trying to make this funky thing like funky little shack, like something kind of cool. And I'm so far from that being the case. And then I look over and this guy has just built this absolutely unbelievably gorgeous, you know, series of glass boxes with like an amazing fireplace inside. It's on the water. And I just I I all I could think was, how did my life go so wrong that I am so far away from something like that ever happening? Which I'm not saying that's the right response. Just like I shouldn't have been jealous of your your favorite Amanda yesterday getting her couch on a street in New York. That shouldn't be where my brain goes. But it does sometimes. And I'm not proud of it.

00:22:32 - 00:22:44 | Speaker 1:

um i did not recall or maybe i was scanning too quickly that the person who's homeless has worked for microsoft of course minecraft i believe microsoft owns minecraft and i think that was

00:22:44 - 00:23:12 | Speaker 2:

kind of in the article they were pointing out that this is i i also didn't read every word of the article so i don't want to misstate what was in there but the sense i got was there was an irony to the fact that this person who worked at microsoft maybe even in that division or something had built this beautiful real life home that very much resembled a beautiful Minecraft home that which was one of my favorite Russell Crowe movies a beautiful Minecraft okay that's

00:23:12 - 00:23:34 | Speaker 1:

the show title I'll write it down but I got to say something here because we have not mentioned the most important part of this article which is just absolutely infuriating it is so infuriating would you say it's more than mildly I would I would is they show all these beautiful beautiful shots of this home which is just like just so ridiculously beautiful not to almost make me want

00:23:34 - 00:23:38 | Speaker 2:

to play minecraft andrew this is i'm not kidding well this is what you're doing in minecraft but

00:23:38 - 00:23:59 | Speaker 1:

how do you know because they did not include one god damn screen cap of the inspiration the minecraft version of this house that's all i want to see you know why well i responded to annie i didn't copy you i guess um and she said it's probably a rights issue do you agree oh i

00:23:59 - 00:24:29 | Speaker 2:

hadn't thought of that i think it's that sunset magazine is too highfalutin to put like they're like we're not about you we're not about publishing like a digital whatever you want to call it rendering of something from some video game we're all about these insane beauty shots of this home that this person built and uh so but but actually you know annie and per usual may have actually been right about this and had the more sensible answer which is maybe it is just a rights issue

00:24:29 - 00:24:59 | Speaker 1:

or you might both be right i actually think that taking a screen grab of something like this i actually feel like there's in the context of this magazine there would be journalistic rights to use that um also like i i don't know like if you take a screen cap of something you built in a video game like who owns the rights to that maybe I think that maybe I agree more with you that it was a design sensibility thing that it would really muck up the flow of this beautiful pictorial having said that you can't link to it you can't have the guy

00:25:00 - 00:25:19 | Speaker 2:

put it on some like some just server somewhere or whatever you know he shared it like you can't put a dropbox okay you're not going to do a dropbox link but either way like that exists somewhere you can keep it out of your article but say like based on a you know just link to it based on a minecraft house and you click on it and then you make me happy i've decided andrew that it's

00:25:19 - 00:26:09 | Speaker 1:

actually good that i can't afford this house because i'm just scrolling through it again and literally every touch is what i would do on any home that i was building if i had a more or less unlimited budget i mean it's just it is so up my alley in every possible way um but if i had this house i don't how do i explain this i could just see a morning of like coming downstairs and making cup of coffee and looking around and thinking i did it i got the thing i got my white whale right and now what do i do like i feel like if i had this this house in this sunset magazine article I mean, if I don't think about it very long, what it feels like is, oh, my God, I'd finally be happy. But if I think about it longer and in a more in-depth way, is that me or you?

00:26:09 - 00:26:23 | Speaker 2:

This is me. This is the BoJack Horseman theme. As you describe yourself living and just having everything that you want and living in the perfect, beautiful house, but then just staring dead ahead with nothing left, with no more feeling.

00:26:23 - 00:27:16 | Speaker 1:

i mean i think it would take at least a week though that's the thing but i just feel like there would be this there would be but what a week i would just be some sort of on we of getting the thing that somewhere in my mind i i mean this is not coming as news to the listeners or you probably but definitely if i in my mind somewhere there is the thought that if i could live in own and by the way that's a key part of this if i could own this house that this microsoft dude has If I could own it It would fix whatever is going on inside of me And I would just be fine And then I would like literally Everything would balance out But of course we know that's not true And in fact if I had this house And everything was still out of whack Then I'd have some real trucks ahead Because I couldn't even blame it on the fact That I live in an apartment in Portland Now I've got to fix myself Yeah exactly How does BoJack Horseman end? I didn't get to the final season

00:27:16 - 00:27:31 | Speaker 2:

It got really really bleak I really fell off the train with it I'll probably get back on at some point But it's just been kind of hard because I can't remember exactly where I left off. And I love that show. But there's a lot of plot echo. I don't know if that's a thing. I'm just throwing that out there. I know what you mean, though.

00:27:31 - 00:27:36 | Speaker 1:

Like this show, there's a lot of treading the same kind of boards. Yeah, exactly.

00:27:36 - 00:27:58 | Speaker 2:

And getting more and more extreme. I remember I think I left off at a place where there's some ugliness between him and somebody's daughter, I believe. And I was like, good lord, this show with young daughter. And it's like, oh, this show, did you get that far into it? It's like kind of got a little like he's really hitting rock bottom. I'm like, I don't think I have this in me anymore.

00:27:59 - 00:28:44 | Speaker 1:

I think so. I mean, again, when I got into that show, I was. I was falling fairly deep into that exact life because I was still living in Bellingham. The pandemic had set in. I was in it's not as nice as Bojack's house, but it is a pretty nice home. and it was up on a hill and it added the dang swimming pool and I was just mostly drinking copious amounts of alcohol, playing online poker and watching BoJack Horseman from the downstairs of the home. So there were some parallels to that, which means also it all kind of blurs together, the plots. And like you said, there's a lot of things that sort of come back up and repeat themselves or whatever. So I didn't get to the end of it, but I'm assuming it all gets fixed, right?

00:28:44 - 00:28:55 | Speaker 2:

I'm assuming he's just happily ever after. trotting off into the sunset but he fixes everything yeah he fixes all of his relationships himself he becomes a whole person at the end after he buys a really nice house and an old

00:28:55 - 00:29:39 | Speaker 1:

boy scout a different really nice house that's the thing exactly the really nice house he had was not the not the really nice house that he needed um but once he got the second really nice house in a totally different kind of geography then things were cool one last thing i'll say on this article that literally no one is looking at right now except you and i um the guy has a couch i should say the couple has a couch yeah and it is that one i think is um uh might be i forget who makes that one it's not roche bobois but it is not lynn rosette is that it's not wildly different than the couch that our friend our favorite man doesn't think it doesn't have an odor it's literally clean it's not super different from the couch she found on the street

00:29:39 - 00:29:50 | Speaker 2:

in new york i was having the same thought as i was going through this now um is do you know how to say this l-i-g-n-e-r-o-s-e-t line rosette sofa it says that sounds right to me um but that's not

00:29:50 - 00:30:00 | Speaker 1:

a brand that's not a name that stands out to you uh i have seen that name in dwell magazine andrew where i go to uh

00:30:00 - 00:31:01 | Speaker 2:

again, fantasize about a version of my life that does not exist. Like, I love reading Dwell Magazine on the airplane so that people will think that I'm the kind of person who actually is buying a, however you say that, lignée rosette sofa or a corbusier lounge chair or the Noguchi table. I will say this. These are really the greatest hits of this sort of furniture. Like that Noguchi table, you've seen that before, right? I mean, it's beautiful. It's an amazing, beautiful object and was quite revolutionary. It's a little on the nose. See, this is day three for me. I'm looking around the house. You're a little on the nose. We need some race car beds in here. We did the Arco floor lamp, which we're all doing, which has this giant marble base, and then it cantilevers out over the middle of the room. We've got the Corbusier lounge chair. you know it's like starting to feel like you know what's next well let me ask let me ask you this

00:31:01 - 00:31:17 | Speaker 1:

though so in like some of these photos they show them like kind of enter i mean entertaining or just like kind of lounging with friends uh and it appears that it is a uh strictly shoes off house which i guess wouldn't make i guess would make sense if you have but like if no if i came over

00:31:17 - 00:31:23 | Speaker 2:

what are you doing what is the what are the point what is even the point of cement floors if you're

00:31:23 - 00:31:48 | Speaker 1:

going shoes off and now i can see you know i if maybe they all in these shots are just choosing not to wear shoes which is fine but when i see like kind of guests over and everybody's lounging around and in in socked feet i think that they probably checked the shoes at the door which again is the is the right of any homeowner to do but if i know that in advance and you're looking to entertain me i i might i might swerve on that it depends on the state you're in are you in a

00:31:48 - 00:31:54 | Speaker 2:

shed your shoe state or not can you legally tell people coming over that they not my mental state

00:31:54 - 00:32:16 | Speaker 1:

but literally the actual physical oh yeah you know are you talking about a hold my shoes state um okay listen carol hold my shoes oh wait shit what was the thing that you said before that was the perfect oh a beautiful mine beautiful minecraft um so anyway but i'm looking back at my notes here have we talked to have we i don't think we've clarified have we clarified our plans or

00:32:16 - 00:33:06 | Speaker 2:

in our in our special way so here yeah thank you andrew thank you for refocusing things so we oh yeah i'm looking at the clock we're actually really yeah we got like halfway through the show yeah so uh we are the big event the tbtl 4000th episode is happening on saturday july 29th in seattle washington it'll be in the evening please uh circle that date on your calendar make your travel plans we want to see everybody uh that night that would be totally awesome uh there we are again kicking around the idea of some kind of a very small funky funky little thing related to the end of the thon but it's not going to be a giant get together and it's going to be we'll get more into that again if and when it happens but to clear up any confusion again july 29th that's the biggie so we hope to see everybody for that when we get it all

00:33:06 - 00:33:13 | Speaker 1:

figured out and also we did mention in the in the newsletter what we are doing for the thon too i I don't think we've mentioned that here yet.

00:33:14 - 00:33:14 | Speaker 2:

Oh, okay.

00:33:14 - 00:33:18 | Speaker 1:

Do you just want to take a break and we'll come back and say what we're doing for the Thon?

00:33:18 - 00:33:34 | Speaker 2:

No, I want to say it here real quick. And just get it through. No, you know what? No, let's take a break and come back. So if we do end up going on and on about that, at least we won't push the break to like 60 minutes into the show. Okay, good call. We'll get our dazzling donors in here. Quick break, and then we'll be back with more TBTL.

00:33:35 - 00:33:40 | Speaker 1:

On your mark. On your mark. Get set. Get set. Now ready. Ready. Go.

00:33:40 - 00:34:15 | Speaker 2:

Hey, let's thank our dazzling donors for today's episode. These folks are donating a dazzling amount of dough. They're keeping TBTL in business. And not to the degree that I have that house that the Microsoft House guy has. But you know what, Andrew? I'm doing just fine thanks to these generous people. Folks like Jeff Clark, who's in Situate, Massachusetts. I only know how to say that because of reading Dazzling Donors, probably Jeff, from Situate.

00:34:15 - 00:34:43 | Speaker 1:

Yes. I think we might have accidentally, erroneously, I'm going to use the word erroneously because it makes me sound smarter, ascribed Situate and the pronouncer, like, getting a kid to eat, sit, comma, chew it. Somehow that got copied and pasted to the incorrect donor. So if that language looks familiar to you, Luke, that is why. But, yeah, Jeff Clark, situate mass, like getting a kid to eat, sit, chew it. I think that's a very good, what do you call those devices? A very good mnemonic.

00:34:43 - 00:35:00 | Speaker 2:

Is that a mnemonic device? Mnemonic device, yeah. Does that apply to pronunciation, or is that a different? Because I think of mnemonic device. Well, I guess you're remembering how to say situate, so it is mnemonic in that way, right? Yeah, I guess so. Jeff says, I'm drinking out of my TBTL coffee lover mug right now.

00:35:00 - 00:35:42 | Speaker 1:

Now, this was the first gift I got when I started my dazzling donations a few years ago. It's a great mug, beautiful, well-built, and holds a little more coffee than my other mugs. I use my TBTL Coffee Love A Mug also frequently. They're a beautiful mug. They are. They're great. This mug is the first one I reach for, and I'm disappointed if it's unavailable. God, Jeff, this is the show for you, and you are the listener for us, because I know that feeling about so many small objects. like is it good socks day or is it just okay socks day they could be from the same batch of socks but some of them are just doing better than others yeah i don't know why i um i want to

00:35:42 - 00:36:36 | Speaker 2:

know is jeff letting other people you he says if the mug is unavailable that's a very passive way of putting it you know not like if my not like if one of those other people i live with is using my mug so i'm wondering if it's a if it's a open mug house like can anybody grab any mug or is this like jeff's mug like genevieve has a special abraham lincoln what does everything sound like a firearms conversation i realize that i was trying to pull out of that genevieve has i think i've told you before like this precious mug that a friend gave her that is basically it's just the bottom half of abraham lincoln's face we don't know why it's not in the shape of it it's just a white mug and it's just like in black and white the bottom of abraham lincoln's face and um we're always scared that if it breaks like it'll be irreplaceable that's where i'll have to go to reddit i've thought about doing some work in advance before accidentally breaking this mug to take photos of it and put it online and say eventually i'm going to break this mug and my girlfriend's going to break up

00:36:36 - 00:37:08 | Speaker 1:

with me does anybody know where i can get another one that's it's good to it's good to be prepared for something like that you know what i mean like yeah maybe you can get a 3d scan made or something that's not a bad idea um anyway jeff continues uh i feel the same way he says he's disappointed If he doesn't have his special mug I feel the same way about TBTL As a new listener to the show I can still remember how I found out about TBTL It was 2015 and I read an article about Podcasts you should listen to They wrote, I know, who wrote that? Jeff

00:37:08 - 00:37:14 | Speaker 2:

This was right when we joined APM Maybe we got one little blurb somewhere

00:37:14 - 00:37:19 | Speaker 1:

Jeff, you've done so much for the program already But could you do one more thing And tell us where that article was

00:37:19 - 00:37:26 | Speaker 2:

And then also can you, well one more thing Can you print it out a hundred times and put it on the telephone poles around your neighborhood.

00:37:26 - 00:37:36 | Speaker 1:

Could you do the thing where you put tbtl.net along the bottom and cut it into funny little tabs that people remember? Actually, that's not a bad promo idea. That's awesome.

00:37:36 - 00:37:37 | Speaker 2:

Need a podcast?

00:37:38 - 00:38:54 | Speaker 1:

Right? That's great. And it just says tbtl.net. I really like it. Let's see. They wrote, it might take a little bit to get used to all the inside jokes and references, but once you're in, you're in. Nice. I'm in, and I'm glad I'm in. tbtl is with me when i mow my lawn or when i'm playing minecraft at 11 p.m what this was a coincidence episode and get into our episode no get it stay please stay no please stay but like that's that's odd that that's in the note after we've been talking about um it's it's uh there when i'm having a terrible day and especially when i'm having a great day i turn off the blurs days either well jeff radical honesty from jeff and also think how about radical irony that we're reading this on a blurs on a blurs day so you know you can pretty much tune out after this jeff that's fine tbch is a big part of my life that i can't clearly explain to anyone and i've got the best and technically the most expensive mug to prove it Well, Jeff, thank you for the support. And, you know, I guess we'll see you for tomorrow's show, Maestro. On your mark. On your mark. Get set. Get set.

00:38:54 - 00:38:57 | Speaker 2:

Now ready. Ready. Go.

00:38:57 - 00:41:23 | Speaker 1:

Everybody rattle. I meant because Jeff is now going to stop listening after we read the message. There's going to be some top stories. There will be, I think, I hope, there will be some top stories, maybe slightly truncated. But people are probably fine for us to breeze past my hot DeSantis takes anyway. Hey, look who it is. It's Summer Ash in Socorro, New Mexico. You two go way back, right? To the Bryant Park Project. Now, you might be like, huh, Socorro, New Mexico. Why have I heard of that? I believe that's the home of some kind of large array, like telescope type of thing. Summer is, I believe, an actual, a real, and I don't believe, I know this, an astrophysicist. Summer says, hi Luke and Andrew It's your self-proclaimed in-house Oh, well there you go, astrophysicist Long-time listener, first-time dazzler Oh, Summer, thank you That's really That's like This is going to be a weird analogy Summer, please take this in the spirit in which it's intended But it's just like you're married to someone And they're somehow like 12 years in They're like, I'm more into you than I've ever been been which is not often how that goes the idea that summer has been you know listening to the show for all these years and i've known summer forever and now summer's like yeah you know what i'm gonna go ahead and do some dazzling donations i'd like to use my donor message to share the universe with the amazing community you've created i want to extend an open invitation to both uh to you both and to the tens to visit my landlocked state where i work at the very large array or the vla an array of dishes that work together to form one giant radio telescope if you've seen contact with jody fisher you know what i'm talking about i consider summer ash the jody fisher of the tbtl universe foster sorry the jody foster of the tbtl universe um i would love to give an insider tour to any tens who might want to make the trip that's yes wild like this is this is a i mean summer we could have offered this as a tv channel i mean that is a chance to get an insider tour of the very large array from the jody fisher i mean come on uh depending on the day i might even be able to take you up on an actual antenna they are 10 stories tall andrew i think you found the location for the next thon

00:41:23 - 00:41:25 | Speaker 2:

I quit, so that's fast.

00:41:26 - 00:41:40 | Speaker 1:

Given how challenging everything on this planet is these days. Now, when Summer says that, she knows because she also knows what's happening on the other planets currently. Like, you know, for me, this is my only frame of reference is like, God, it's a weird day on planet Earth. She's like, well, you should see Neptune.

00:41:41 - 00:41:43 | Speaker 2:

Oh, they can't get their shit together up there.

00:41:43 - 00:42:00 | Speaker 1:

Being out at the VLA among these giant sentinels With their eyes on the sky Really gives you a sense of wonder and awe As opposed to what feels like constant despair As Casey Kasem would say Keep reaching for the stars Power out

00:42:00 - 00:42:02 | Speaker 2:

Wait, can you do the power out in the Casey Kasem voice?

00:42:03 - 00:42:06 | Speaker 1:

Keep reaching for the stars Power out

00:42:06 - 00:42:21 | Speaker 2:

Wow That's good I guess I took the wrong I took the wrong point from what Summer was saying there I was assuming that like on other planets, they're also just like fumbling their way through like city council meetings and what have you. But no, that was the opposite of what Summer was trying to say. What were you going to ask me?

00:42:22 - 00:43:53 | Speaker 1:

Well, two things. One, I was going to say, Summer, thank you so much for just being such a longstanding friend of me and the show. And thanks for donating money. And thanks for this incredibly cool offer of letting folks check out the VLA. If I am ever anywhere near New Mexico, I'm going to take you up on that. Also, I just like the way that Summer is describing these radio telescopes, these sentinels with their eyes on the sky. Because, you know, even when you go camping and you lay out in a field and look at the stars, it's obviously a really emotional experience because it sort of gives you perspective on where we are in this whole universe. The thing I was going to ask you about is if you've ever heard the clip of Bill Hader talking about his favorite sketch, which never made it to air on Saturday Night Live. and maybe I'll play it for you tomorrow. It's a skit that he and I'm going to guess it was Mulaney because I think they were writing partners wrote, and it's Casey Kasem is reunited with his long-lost son, whose name is like Crazy Kasem or something, and they're just having this, the conversation is so fun. It's Bill Hader doing a Casey Kasem impression, and it is so funny, him talking in both characters, and then like it's all in the style of American Top 40, But it's like his son is on the run from the like the mob because he's like lost a like shipment of cocaine or something. But it's all being presented in that incredibly sing songy Casey Kasem style. It's very good. I'll play it for you tomorrow. Sounds good.

00:43:58 - 00:44:00 | Speaker 2:

Hello and welcome to Top Story.

00:44:03 - 00:45:12 | Speaker 1:

Quick, just we only need about 10 minutes on this, if that, because we certainly don't need to get into the political implications because I don't know them. But I will tell you that I probably read five different articles this morning, Andrew. I went through every major newspaper reading about their take on how badly Ron DeSantis' announcement that he is running for president went yesterday on Twitter Spaces. And each one just filled my heart with more happiness. It was like Christmas came early for this podcaster. For folks that didn't hear Ron DeSantis decided to team up with Elon Musk And this other guy named I think his name is David Sachs He's some rich techno guy And the three of them were going to go on Twitter Spaces Which I didn't realize this is only audio I've never been Well no, you know what I think before it all went to complete hell i feel like our friend chris hayes might have done like a kind of a sort of question and answer on twitter spaces so i might have like been on there one time but it was a bold idea to

00:45:12 - 00:46:06 | Speaker 2:

do it only as audio yeah i'm sorry i didn't know it was only audio too like because i mean i i know twitter spaces is but i thought they were setting up something special for this even because i read some cursory coverage yesterday when i saw the headlines coming in like headlines were just like biggest disaster you could imagine for elon musk and ron de santis i'm like oh okay i'm hungry for this okay can you put this directly in my veins um like i mean just it's a double schadenfreude like it's amazing i know but the petard hoists two men i didn't go deep into it but even with my cursory reading i was picturing it as like because i know that tucker carlson has been dancing with this idea of maybe relaunching a show on twitter as a twitter thing so i assume that all of this was positioning Twitter as an alternative to to like Fox News or whatever that Twitter was going to become more of a destination for certain types of television-esque coverage so

00:46:06 - 00:46:53 | Speaker 1:

I didn't realize that this was just on Spaces anyway yeah it was on Spaces they start there was just like so many problems I mean again Andrew when you and I just do like a stream of TBTL and there's like you know this has happened before we'll be doing a thon or wherever we are and there will be like it takes us an extra five minutes to like start the the stream or the broadcast and you and i are both just kind of like sweating bullets and like oh my god like the world is going to end we're talking about a few hundred people that like this podcast this went so much worse than anything that we've ever tried to do even on tbtl um this is uh from cnn Samantha Deloya and Claire Duffy and Donnie O'Sullivan It took three people at CNN.com To cover how bad this went

00:46:53 - 00:47:01 | Speaker 2:

Because one would start laughing really hard And be like here just I'll take over from here Until you can gain control of your composure again

00:47:01 - 00:47:45 | Speaker 1:

Sound from the live stream event Which was held on Twitter Spaces And hosted by owner Elon Musk And tech entrepreneur David Sachs Cut in and out for the first minutes after starting Quote we've got so many people here That we are kind of melting the servers sacks said at one point more than 500 000 twitter users joined the event which was ultimately ended and then restarted a half hour later delaying de santis's announcement can you imagine what that half hour felt like god it felt like an eternity can you imagine the half like okay we're just shutting this down and like can you just the amount of flop sweat that de santis is sweating as the as the minutes tick by on his big day his big birthday with the big cake that no one

00:47:45 - 00:48:35 | Speaker 2:

showed up to there was a moment when you and i were doing our um holiday party via zoom this last holiday season and i don't know what did we have 300 people on the line a little bit less than that and we had talked about how we wanted the kind of open to go once i think we were going to play some music and kind of you know there wasn't a literal curtain but sort of like a curtain moment and there was a little bit of miscommunication at the beginning of it and i remember Like, I was furiously, like, texting you and John and May on the back end just saying, like, go, go, we're ready to go. And I'm, like, trying to do all these different things. And, like, first of all, I don't think literally any single person on that call is like, oh, remember the TBTL holiday party? Remember how it was, like, kind of awkward for a couple of seconds at the beginning? But in those moments that I was texting you guys, it felt like a year. It felt like a year. Everything was moving so slowly.

00:48:35 - 00:49:49 | Speaker 1:

Now imagine it's actually 29 full minutes and you're little Ronnie DeSantis and you're running for president and you have been I mean, this is so calculated because the way he's trying to position himself versus Trump is he's the tech savvy guy. He's extremely online. He's got the substantive issues. Clearly his people have decided that the way – he's not going to outbluster Trump because no one can, but he's going to win on the issues, which I don't know. If you've looked at how the Republican Party and the Republican voters are operating, I'd go ahead and throw issues out the window. They don't care about issues. They care about owning the libs. But anyway, they finally get back online. I would say this poor bastard, David Sachs, but you know what? Honestly, fuck him. He's like tap dancing. He's like, I think you broke the internet there. when they relaunched and as becca and i were saying to each other last night that's not how breaking the internet works guess what was fine the internet guess what was not fine twitter like that website it's like that's like if the tbtl website goes down we go boy we broke the internet no no no the internet was operating correctly your shit site which you have no backup on and nobody to fix anything it's gone down that is not the internet's fault do not

00:49:49 - 00:49:59 | Speaker 2:

blame the internet for this the worst part though i would say the most embarrassing part and again And you did more reading on this than I did, but was the part where Elon Musk took ball bearings and started throwing them?

00:50:00 - 00:50:52 | Speaker 1:

at DeSantis, and he broke. Yes. Does anybody remember that, what I'm referencing there? When Elon Musk introduced the Tesla truck, do you remember that? It was this, like, before we all knew him. Oh, yeah, he couldn't break the window. He did break the window. It was supposed to be brakeless glass. He shattered the window, right? Yeah, and so we talked about it on this show, and it's also one of Genevieve's favorite, like, pop culture moments of all time. He, like, he brings a guy on stage and says, like, these windows cannot break, and he brings a guy on stage he gives him some ball bearings he says throw it as hard as you can at the window and he does and the window just shatters and it's like really embarrassing and then he's like well here try the back window and it shatters as well they did try the back window of twitter and it was still a problem that's what i mean so that's a really that's a really apt comparison though

00:50:52 - 00:53:18 | Speaker 3:

andrew because i am sure that either in that moment or later on elon musk act like probably acted like well that's good that we know those windows need you know exactly because this is what this is how these this is how these people's brain works because again this this guy i think it was uh sax again he says you know you're breaking new ground when there's bugs and scaling issues like again yeah i mean trying like trying to make it into like this means that ron de santis is is like really uh a visionary in that his stupid announcement was a complete shit show By the way, when they came back online, as it were, a half hour later, it wasn't like it was smooth sailing. Everything still kept cutting out. There was hot mic issues. It sounds like, I mean, they only got about half of the people back who had been initially watching it based on the CNN article. They said it was like 250K people. And that's, I just want to say, not that I think I need to shadow box with the Ron DeSantis campaign, but 250,000 people doing something on Twitter is very, very different than 250,000 people showing up somewhere, like physically going to a soccer stadium or something so even that number to me is not it's just not like getting a bunch of people in real life out to your event um to announce that you're running for president it just seems like this could not have gone worse i mean he's already trailing trump uh in the the polls in terms of like who the republican voters might support as the next candidate and this is like literally the first thing anyone can think of when it comes to this guy announcing he wants to run for president is a complete and total shit show like i i have no kind of long-term sense of how politics work maybe we'll be talking i hope not but maybe we'll be talking about president de santis someday um or whatever maybe he'll beat trump for the nomination but like i can't imagine a universe right now in which this could have gone worse and it feels like it could be the kind of thing sort of like who was the congressman from colorado gary hart and the monkey business with donna rice you know he he sort of he sort of dared the media to like catch him in infidelity and then suddenly these photos service like a week later of him on this boat aptly titled the monkey business or like michael dukakis on the tank you know these moments that are just like iconic for how much they just completely scuttled a campaign i could very much imagine a world in which 10 years from now as a joke someone's like oh yeah like you mean de santis on twitter spaces then we all just lose our asses laughing at the bar which isn't an

00:53:18 - 00:53:23 | Speaker 2:

underground bunker because trump is hunting us but anyway right because let's not focus on what

00:53:23 - 00:54:25 | Speaker 1:

he's saying but that he's talking at all they're hunting anybody with a new yorker subscription um i uh that would be the way to find us didn't i write didn't i write something like that when i when trump i had to write a newsletter after trump was elected and i wasn't feeling very funny so i wrote some some sci-fi apocalyptic version of the world where i think people who subscribe to the new yorker um were being hunted by the government i could be wrong about that anyway um i uh was going to say yes listen i don't want to take the fun out of this in fact if i think you would probably maybe even to my discredit during like the trump administration when things were like really just as awful as they could they felt like they could be sometimes there would be these moments of schadenfreude about him looking foolish or something and like it never felt that delicious to me because I was always like yeah but like at the end of the day like the issues the real world that is being created that we're still seeing the ripples of today of just like being just the outward racism and violence connected to it and normalizing of all

00:54:25 - 00:54:31 | Speaker 3:

these behaviors out in the public space that we're not in the public space exactly right and of course

00:54:31 - 00:54:59 | Speaker 1:

I even, you know, can't help but to think of the U-Haul driver supposedly with a Nazi emblem somewhere in his truck as he was trying to batter down the, was it some gates by the White House or something earlier this week? And you're just like, huh, I wonder, like, no Trump, does that, you know, do we have that sort of stuff? It feels like living one of those dark comic books. But anyway, what I was going to say was I don't want to take like this was purely this was so delicious yesterday because it was just like two.

00:55:00 - 00:55:28 | Speaker 2:

of the most loath loathsome people I could imagine both taking it on the chin yesterday, like DeSantis DeSantis and the political sphere and Musk with what a disaster Twitter has become. And then him trying to rescue it in this high profile way. And it just being such a disaster is wonderful. Having said that we had a, we kind of had a lot of fun with Trump coming down the escalator, you know, and just thinking like, Oh, well like what a joke. Can you believe it just was such a, we were angry, but we were less afraid. And again, I mean,

00:55:28 - 00:56:47 | Speaker 1:

Oh, I was on this very show stridently. And again, with some kind of weird righteous indignation, literally saying Donald Trump is not going to be the nominee. Like, I was so sure of that. Like, and this was before any of the primaries. I was I think I was just kind of I felt like I hated Donald Trump deeply before it was as popular of a position. And I don't mean that like there weren't people that disliked him, but he uniquely angered me long, long, long, long, long before there was even a joke about him running for president because he was just such he was so full of shit. And there were so many interesting articles about how really shitty his businesses were. And again, I'm hundreds of thousands of people in America knew Donald Trump was bullshit, you know, when he was in like Home Alone 2. But he was also in Home Alone 2. There was a period of his existence where he was seen as this harmless buffoon who we put in major television shows like The Apprentice and in movies, you know, and I he just he irked me in those days when there was a lot of people were just kind of like, whatever, Donald Trump. He's a you know, he's he's a caricature or something. So that was probably why I was so obsessed with trying to really point out that he's not going to become president. I do not think I was correct in that assessment. It turns out you were off to check.

00:56:47 - 00:57:26 | Speaker 2:

But I mean, obviously, DeSantis could end up winning the nomination. We don't know. There's a lot of stuff that could come and go. So my point here isn't like, oh, we say this now, but he could still get the nomination. Yeah, of course he could. I guess for me, it's just I was thinking yesterday while I was lapping this up in a way that maybe I don't always lap this stuff up. I was like, but really, when it comes down to it, does this really hurt his campaign that much? I mean, it could. It's not a great start. And he's had some other real flops in this campaign so far already and kind of sticking is sticking his foot in his mouth here and there. But like when it comes down to it, to the people that he's trying to attract, are they going to be that turned off that some Twitter thing didn't work?

00:57:26 - 00:58:06 | Speaker 1:

You know, right. Here's what I think will happen. If he does not secure the nomination, this will be cited as like a blunder. And like he never he could never recover from, you know, from from his sort of disastrous even announcement. If he manages to like somehow rest these maniacal voters away from Donald Trump or enough of them to get the nomination, then we'll never talk about it again. So I think it'll be one of those things where it'll only get talked about if he ends up not getting the nomination is sort of my I guess my my guess on that. Again, classically right person, Luke Burbank, who called that Donald Trump would never become president.

00:58:06 - 00:58:50 | Speaker 2:

I know we have to wrap up. I would just like to say this, and I don't know if he would be available to come on the show and talk to us about this, but Chris Hayes had a couple of tweets yesterday that I thought were really interesting, not even about the political nature of this or the buffoonery, but just saying that it is always interesting to him when people realize, you know, in other industries, how much work, money, platforms, stuff goes into making live television that reaches millions or hundreds of thousands, if not millions of viewers. That they think well we can just throw this on the internet And so I won't go into more detail And just try to quote his tweets here But from a pure like kind of Media standpoint And platform standpoint I think that's been living in my head I'd like to hear more on that

00:58:50 - 00:59:59 | Speaker 1:

I've got a bunch of all-ins TiVo'd at home Because I'm still using a TiVo And I am very excited tonight When I finally land and get kind of resettled Into my place I'm going to tie a bib on it's going to have like a picture of a lobster on it and i'm going to get a knife and a fork and i'm going to hit play on today's all in with chris hayes and just watch the take on the desantis disaster um because it's just like i know what you mean there's a there's a danger to sort of dance you know whistling past graveyards and or laughing through a graveyard in this case maybe Because when these people, you know, trip, I was going to say trip on their own D's, but maybe we don't need that kind of language on this show. Although I'm going to just start using D in place of T a lot, if that's any better. But like there is such a delight in it. But you're right. There is also a danger in it because these people are terrible and are figuring out ways to rule from a minority position. You know, there are fewer of them than there are of us, the normal people in America. And they're somehow codifying these things with the Supreme Court and the Senate, all that stuff. so

01:00:00 - 01:00:31 | Speaker 3:

At the danger of delighting in something that could really come back to haunt us, I did find all the news about it very delightful, and I'll be interested to see what our friend Chris comes up with. I did send him a text the other day. It was a story from Fox News, which I said to him, this is the kind of news that hits people like us harder than others, and it was, Fox disassembles Tucker Carlson's home studio they had built for him in Maine. i don't know why that story was so riveting just reading about the technology that fox had built

01:00:31 - 01:00:36 | Speaker 2:

at his house that then they were repoing then to see it to see it literally just love it like home

01:00:36 - 01:00:41 | Speaker 3:

studio like and who paid for it and are they taking it away this is the kind of this is the

01:00:41 - 01:00:47 | Speaker 2:

news that i'm very one last thing sorry why is eric the viking stromstad right outside my window

01:00:47 - 01:01:02 | Speaker 3:

right now looking at me and and oh i meant to tell you he's repoing he's looking around my studio he's got a clipboard and he's checking things off shit the last thing i'll say on this and then yeah we gotta we gotta can we push brands one more day or we're gonna just skip it you gotta

01:01:02 - 01:01:07 | Speaker 2:

skip because we got blurs days and you gotta be out of your airbnb right yeah okay but i just feel

01:01:07 - 01:01:16 | Speaker 3:

i'm i'm this is on me for for for punting that topic well we'll get it done tomorrow it'll be one of those uh fridays where we just get through anything we haven't talked about this week

01:01:16 - 01:01:21 | Speaker 2:

however briefly including what our plans are for the tbtl well right exactly that'll be the first

01:01:21 - 01:02:54 | Speaker 3:

thing no first am i a bathrobe guy now second a story about when i heard the song closer to fine out in the world and then third what's going on with the tbtl 4000th episode the thing i was going to say though it's very interesting to watch how the murdoch empire and fox news and their various sort of tertiary products are handling this it is pretty clear to me that the new york post has officially cast its lot against donald trump which is very interesting to see because yesterday the only story in the post i saw or i should say even this morning the only story i saw in the post about the ron de santis disaster was a story from the new york post saying backlash against trump's red button tweets so of course trump or not tweets but you know messages on truth social of course trump is loving this as much as anyone because his nemesis de santis is is being brought low the new york post's take on it was not ron de santis has an absolutely terrible no good very bad day it was people are mad at trump about what he's been truth socially which was fascinating to me i mean that is like they are team desantis now because they had to get it to get up pretty early to to sort of like make this a story about trump had a bad day i mean like trump's always having a bad day as far if if you define a bad day as is trying to destroy democracy but like in this particular case the story of the day was ron desantis really you know really had a bad day and they're they're still framing it as people are mad at Donald Trump about his response to the DeSantis thing

01:02:54 - 01:03:20 | Speaker 1:

there's a right way to rock and a wrong way to roll you can't just listen to your soul just remember that life is number one you can't be having so much fun just remember that life is much fun You can't be nothing but funny

01:03:20 - 01:03:42 | Speaker 2:

All right, Luke, let's get into some Blursdays here. We're a little bit tight on time, but I did want to say at the beginning here that I think you somewhat misinterpreted my sort of joke before. We really didn't tell everybody what our actual plans for the Thon are. They're not groundbreaking, but on tomorrow's show, let's tell people

01:03:42 - 01:03:56 | Speaker 3:

If you didn't see the video, like what what we plan on doing for those days of you don't want to just force people to sign up for new newsletter to get that info or they have to buy it on the streets, have to find out on the streets.

01:03:56 - 01:04:38 | Speaker 2:

I will. Now that the newsletter has gone out, I'll try to make that video that we recorded more widely available on YouTube if anybody else wants to see it or rewatch it in the mean. So we'll do that tomorrow. In the meantime, let's get in some blurs days here. Krista and Aaron say wishing a happy belated Blur's Day to our non-imaginary friendo and badass book club babe show always appreciate your perspective on life the universe and everything here's to another year of adventure and fun times around the sun here's to celebrating a new year of you that's a beautiful message to show who also wrote in by the way to say happy Blur's Day to themselves I'm not going to read the whole

01:04:38 - 01:04:39 | Speaker 3:

that's a real plot twist

01:04:40 - 01:05:30 | Speaker 2:

Yes, exactly. And people are, I encourage people to wish themselves a happy Blur's Day. But the show did mention that birthdays can be a bit rough. And hearing my blurs acknowledged on some imaginary radio will help turn Blur's Day blues a bit more sparkly. So, yeah, we will be your sparkly blue blanket today. Happy. blurs day show that's a lot of blurs dude it sure is dana says happy 40th blurs to an incredibly lovable 10 tyler he's been a fan of you two longer than he's been a fan of me don't worry it's not a competition but yes we would win so i know it means so much to him to get a happy blurs day from you tyler i hope you've had a wonderful birthday week and that you remember just how loved you are it's a lot and we know this because dana punctuates this with a heart emojis

01:05:30 - 01:06:11 | Speaker 1:

happy blurs day Tyler that's one of the last word on that Jeremy says I love you more Jeremy says a very happy and slightly belated blurs to my good friend and mutual TBTL co-progenitor Gail as an unrepentant time bandit in my TBTL timeline this is way early since I just heard her blurs day for me from last July we've been friends for 25 years exclamation point question mark question mark is it true looking forward to many many more happy blurs day gail happy blurs day gail happy blurs day gail

01:06:11 - 01:06:23 | Speaker 2:

virginia says happiest of blurs days to holly you are the best dog rescuer and i hope your day is full of only the best chaos of virginia

01:06:23 - 01:06:34 | Speaker 1:

i love that Savi in I think this was Morgana I think I spelled that wrong I think I put a typo in there

01:06:34 - 01:06:38 | Speaker 2:

Morgana the Kissing Bandit Morgana the Kissing Bandit

01:06:38 - 01:06:40 | Speaker 1:

Do you know of a Moraga? I don't

01:06:40 - 01:06:49 | Speaker 2:

I feel like Moraga, California Could be a place I'll look it up while you keep reading

01:06:49 - 01:07:16 | Speaker 1:

I guarantee you However it's spelled It's beautiful there Happy actual Blur's Day to my 11 and fiance Karin Like Karin but with an extra A in there Which she's very grateful for Given what's happened to the name Karin Interesting but also apologies to the Karins in our audience These last 8 years you have made my life wonderful And I am so thankful for you That's very sweet Happy Blur's Day Karin

01:07:16 - 01:07:22 | Speaker 2:

By the way Moraga California is in the sort of Greater San Francisco area

01:07:22 - 01:07:30 | Speaker 1:

Nice. So the good news is I didn't make a mistake with the typo, but I did make a mistake on the air. You doubted yourself. That was your mistake. Oh, well.

01:07:30 - 01:07:56 | Speaker 2:

Lisa in Olympia says, happy birthday to my fives, Max and Julian. Thank you for being excellent progeny and for putting up with my nonsense. You're the best fives this TBTL10 could ever want. This might be the first time that I'm – we're doing the Blur's Day messages and I'm in or very near a city that is named for somebody who's getting a Blur's Day message. Oh, I thought of that today. I'm near Julian, California.

01:07:56 - 01:08:28 | Speaker 1:

And weren't you in Julian for some work stuff? I was. We were filming there. Yeah. I thought of that when I was assembling these today. Happy birthday to Nancy from Megan. I am delighted that you've become a 10. All right. Megan out there converting people to 10-dom. Thank you, Megan, and happy Blur's Day, Nancy. I love talking with you about the show's content, especially when it inspires Seattle memories, like the Aqua Follies at Green Lake and their swim musicals. I don't think I knew that they were called swim musicals.

01:08:28 - 01:08:40 | Speaker 2:

They should bring that back. I swear people would go crazy for that. You know what I mean? Like, I won't do my whole Green Lake sort of spiel again, but I would go to that if I lived in the area. I wonder if that's the problem.

01:08:40 - 01:08:44 | Speaker 1:

I wonder if it would attract too many people And they don't have the infrastructure they used to have there

01:08:44 - 01:08:55 | Speaker 2:

That's actually That's probably a good point Like the TBTL 4000th episode Too much success I mean we're going to probably have to rent out the entire aqua follies For that

01:08:55 - 01:08:58 | Speaker 1:

Luke, Luke, Luke, TBTL on ice

01:08:58 - 01:09:02 | Speaker 2:

So you would do TBTL on ice But not TBTL on build

01:09:02 - 01:09:13 | Speaker 1:

I would, I would need to practice a lot I'd need to get out there I don't think we can do it for the 4000th I think you're pretty close to locking down a venue, right? We just can't announce it yet because we haven't. I hope so. Got everything.

01:09:13 - 01:09:46 | Speaker 2:

Oh, are we? It seems we're, well. Communication breaks? I don't like the sound of that. Okay, let's do that. Offline. Actually, that was one of the songs that Led Zeppelin played at the Aquafallis. Breathe, Andrew. Communication breakdown. Where are we? All right. Sarah in Woodinville, I believe, is where we're at, saying, I'd like to wish my daughter Kylie a happy 18th Blurs Day. She is kind, smart, talented, and one of the coolest people I know. So, Kylie, I'm so proud of you and excited for you as you start your next adventure this fall. Have a great birthday, and I love you. Nice. Cute.

01:09:49 - 01:10:00 | Speaker 1:

And finally, Dave in, David rather, in New Rochelle says, Happy literal Blur's Day to Meredith, born on Monday. Meredith, young girl.

01:10:00 - 01:10:19 | Speaker 2:

TBTL listener. She's eating like a champ and sleeping sometimes and her mom, Eileen, has been an absolute rock star. Our other five, Freddy, just turned 16 and we know he's going to be a sweet, caring older brother because he's been a sweet, caring young man. Good luck to us all as Freddy learns to drive.

01:10:20 - 01:10:53 | Speaker 1:

Alright. Pretty cute. I like it. Freddy and Meredith. Those are some good kid names. Definitely. A lot of Blur's days. A lot of happy Blur's days to go around. Indeed. All right, we should probably wrap it up because, like you said, we are supposed to check out of this place in about five minutes. Although, you know me, Andrew. I'm always, like, wondering if that is a hard out at 11. I'm tempted to just sit with the car idling in the driveway and wait to see when the actual crew shows up. And as we were speculating last night, Becca was like, do you think the crew is just the people that own the house?

01:10:53 - 01:10:56 | Speaker 2:

No, I think they have somebody coming, probably some cleaners coming.

01:10:56 - 01:11:03 | Speaker 1:

I'm going to tell you, because I'm going to set up a surveillance operation here and find out if we really needed to leave at 11 or not. We could have left at 2, and it would have been fine.

01:11:03 - 01:11:05 | Speaker 2:

Glad to know everything's going great for everybody.

01:11:05 - 01:11:13 | Speaker 1:

It's going great. Nobody loves a good Airbnb more than I do, and no one has more agita around all things Airbnb than me.

01:11:13 - 01:11:15 | Speaker 2:

Airbnb and Rudy's, man.

01:11:15 - 01:11:32 | Speaker 1:

You love them and hate them. I do. I do. Hate or love it, the underdog's on top. Okay, thanks for listening, everybody. We will be back here tomorrow with more Imaginary Radio for you. I'll be back up in Portland, so see you from there. In the meantime, have a great Thursday. Take care of yourselves, and please remember, no mountain too tall.

01:11:32 - 01:11:33 | Speaker 2:

And good luck to all.

01:11:40 - 01:12:29 | Speaker 3:

Franz, could you try to break this glass, please? Yeah. Sure? Yeah. Well, maybe that was a little too hard It didn't go through as a plus side, let's try there, right? Okay, sir Man, it didn't go through All right Power out.
