I remember years ago, I'd be at the table between you and mom, and we'd look down, and there'd be the mayor, and all the names of old New York, and you'd whisper in my ear, you'd say, that aster used to be that, and he ran this, till he snafoo'd that, and he's porking her, and she's a s***, and it was just a very lovely time.

00:00:56 - 00:01:13 | Speaker 1:

exist anywhere except in my own mind. So I'm nervous, but I'm excited at the same time. So I'm just going to start talking about what I like and hope I get some replies.

00:01:13 - 00:01:30 | Speaker 3:

Well, alright, hello, good morning, and welcome everyone to a Thursday edition of TBTL, the show that just might be too beautiful to live. That's a terrific title. It jumps out at you like a rat in your underwear drawer. My name is Luke Burbank. I am your host.

00:01:30 - 00:01:31 | Speaker 5:

I like turtles.

00:01:31 - 00:03:18 | Speaker 3:

Coming to you from the Hollywood Broadcast Center right here in Portland, Oregon, where we're looking at kind of a mixed bag of weather. it was cold yesterday i know that we cannot attribute particular days uh temperatures to climate change that's not how that works and i never loved it when conservatives and i continue to not love it when conservatives say like oh it's cold today how's that global warming going But it was pretty wild that, like, two days ago it was 90 degrees, and then yesterday I was doing an interview, a TV interview outside in a botanical garden here in Portland, and I was having to really focus on not having my teeth chatter during the conversation. Anyway, everything seems normal. Everything seems fine. Everything seems like it's coming up episode 3,967 in a collector series. Let the fun begin. We have serious business to get to today, including an update on Andrew's basement toilet situation. Can you verify? Can you give me some 411? I have seen some photographs, some personal photographs he's sharing with me. Stinky! I have many questions, and I will ask them to my friend Andrew. Also, anything that happens today on the show to me is a gift. Because I'm sitting here in the broadcast center. I'm flitting this little, you know, fishing rod kind of thing with the feathers on it for the cat. The fact that the cat is here, alive, in this room.

00:03:18 - 00:03:21 | Speaker 2:

A cat is an angel that poops in a box.

00:03:21 - 00:03:30 | Speaker 3:

Is incredible to me, and I'm going to explain why. Also, I'm going to explain why I'm butthurt about this drag show that I'm helping out with.

00:03:30 - 00:03:31 | Speaker 5:

You're a gross person.

00:03:32 - 00:04:05 | Speaker 3:

And it's a Thursday, a.k.a. Blur's Day. We'll do those as well. Hopefully get the taste out of everyone's ears of why I'm butthurt about the drag show. And we're going to talk to this guy, longest-running Cobra of the show, maybe best known for his depictions of the tall ships. Last night, when Eugenio Suarez hit what should have been a game-tying Grand Slam in the bottom of the ninth inning, and a player for the Miami Marlins somehow defied gravity and, honestly, morality to catch it and pull it back, this is what this man yelled.

00:04:05 - 00:04:06 | Speaker 2:

Targus! Targus!

00:04:06 - 00:04:08 | Speaker 3:

He's Andrew Walsh. You're joining me right now. Good morning, my friend.

00:04:09 - 00:04:50 | Speaker 4:

Good morning, Luke. I'm going to take something that maybe wasn't awkward, but make it more awkward in an attempt to make it less awkward. That's the only way past it is through it, my friend. The only thing I just want to point out is when you said you want to talk about your involvement in a drag contest and you played you're a gross person, that drop was related to you. You are saying that you are a gross person because of your whatever the take is. Yes. You're being probably a little bit hard on yourself and you're negotiating your role in this thing. I just want to make that very clear because I don't know if you've been following the news lately. there's some... Andrew, I just don't want it around the children. I don't want it at the

00:04:50 - 00:05:00 | Speaker 3:

libraries. I don't want it around the children. It has been a little fraught and weaponized. You are so right. That was... You're absolutely right. I am...

00:05:00 - 00:05:14 | Speaker 2:

I am criticizing myself for the fact that I am taking a very petty take on this thing that I think of as being a much greater and a very good thing to happen in the world, which would be a drag show that sets a record. But you're right. That was a bad choice.

00:05:14 - 00:05:18 | Speaker 1:

I didn't catch it. I didn't catch it during sound check that that might sound.

00:05:18 - 00:05:21 | Speaker 2:

That's one of your jobs to protect me from myself.

00:05:21 - 00:05:28 | Speaker 1:

I mean, I don't usually give editorial advice on. Thank you for the clarification. Yeah. So let's just start this over.

00:05:29 - 00:05:34 | Speaker 2:

Okay. Hold on, I have a drop that says, just don't put it in my face. Play that one instead.

00:05:34 - 00:05:36 | Speaker 1:

Right, exactly.

00:05:36 - 00:05:42 | Speaker 2:

No, I am a gross person for the fact that I am butthurt over the dumbest thing about this track show. Let's see here.

00:05:42 - 00:08:15 | Speaker 1:

What did I have to tell you? Oh, I want to tell you one thing that has been driving me bananas. Now, you know that, and we'll talk about this in a moment, okay? But I mentioned yesterday that I was going to be doing a little DIY plumbing because it appeared that my toilet was leaking in the drainage area. I feel like there's a way to say that that doesn't sound dirty, but my toilet was leaking in the drainage area. I'm in the midst of that project. I'll give you an update in a second. What I'm about to say is not related to that, because if you thought it was, you'd think that things went really sideways yesterday. But it did remind me when I asked a friend for some just general advice about whether or not I should tackle this project. And he said, well, I don't ever mess with electricity or plumbing in my house. And I've heard other people, tens, have written in and said, you know, good for you grabbing the bull by the horns with some DIY stuff, but I never mess with electricity or plumbing. That seems to be a standard rule. I was just going to say, I am not quite as afeard of messing around with some plumbing so long as that it's on the outside of the walls. Like if it's under a sink, if it's like, you know, exposed plumbing, I feel like it can be pretty simply addressed. address there's something about the outside of a plumbing that's good for the inside of a pocket book yeah right exactly like dealing with something under the sink you might not be able to fix it but to take a first whack at it or like i said it looked like the the the engineering around toilets is generally pretty basic so i wanted to take a look at that yesterday and i did but later last night in between projects i was just thinking about how people are a little skittish about messing with plumbing and i understand why because if you do something wrong especially if it's inside of a wall you could create some sort of a leak situation that you cannot stop and i was just thinking about that generally and then i thought oh that's right i've been meaning to look where is the main shut off for water in my entire house and again i gave all of this setup because if i just came out and said that i was looking for that yesterday you'd assume that something went really bad everything's fine but in case i ever do have an emergency i want to know where the main shut off and even where the meters are for my water I walked around the house like 40 times yesterday started off sober by the end I can't claim to be so much it just kept wandering around Coors Light can in my hand yeah exactly and I cannot find heads nor tails of the water input to the house nor the the water meter which drives me bananas because I don't know if we want to get into this right now i'm clearly on a roll but i i got a huge spike i fought through many carvana

00:08:15 - 00:08:21 | Speaker 2:

ads yesterday andrew to listen back to the show and i was riveted no i was gonna say regarding

00:08:21 - 00:09:19 | Speaker 1:

the toilet stuff no but what i was gonna say is i don't know if we want to get into this right now but i got a huge spike in my water and sewage bill uh uh last month it's like a two-month cycle i want to say or maybe three but like it was significantly higher than we paid in the past And so I called the the, you know, water service, whatever the utility is. And the very nice person on the phone is kind of like, wow, yeah, that is a big spike. And then he's just sort of speculating and saying, well, you know what I think this is? Oh, yeah, I see it here is during big chunks of the winter during the ice storms, people are workers couldn't get access to a lot of meters. so they were sending you bills for an estimate of water usage and now they've read the meters and they've added to your current bill what you should have been paying in the past in other words we've been undercharging you because we couldn't read the meters and so therefore we're that sounds first of all like total bullshit there's got to be a better way and secondly where are these meters

00:09:19 - 00:09:41 | Speaker 2:

they couldn't get access to right also he's like and a guy named luke set up a crocodile mile slip and slide situation and was doing it every time you left that's that's a i think you should leave sketch by the way somebody that sets up a slip and slide in your yard and runs all your water but then cleans it all up every time you come home well here's the other thing that really stuck in

00:09:41 - 00:09:59 | Speaker 1:

my mind since i had this conversation because i don't usually look closely at my utility bills i'm just like well they you know like i'm paying what we use to be alive basically right exactly but then i'm like looking at this while i'm on the phone with him i'm like oh i see sewage rates are like way higher than water rates he's like yeah yeah it's the sewage rates that are

00:10:00 - 00:10:40 | Speaker 2:

It's like, if I recall, Luke, it's something like you pay, I don't know, let's say X amount of money for water usage. But then the sewage rate is like four times that. I'm like, well, how do you measure sewage? He's like, well, it's based on the amount of water you use with a nose plug. We know it's going down the drain. So that's sewage. I'm like, yeah, but what about and again, we don't water our lawn, but Genevieve waters her tomatoes. I washed the car the other day, which I know is not the best use of resources. Get off my back, everybody. But either way, when I'm outside using the hose, now I'm constantly thinking I'm using this water and I'm paying for this water, but I'm paying four times the price of this water because it's going into my lawn or going into the outside somewhere and it's not going into the sewer. Do you see what I'm saying?

00:10:40 - 00:10:49 | Speaker 1:

I think I may have lost the thread there. So the sewage is more expensive than just regular water. But when you're washing your car, it's counted as sewage.

00:10:49 - 00:11:10 | Speaker 2:

So here's the deal. they measure your water usage and they charge you a certain amount for the actual water you used and then they charge you a certain amount for the sewer fee and the sewer fee is based on water usage i'm like well how do you measure that there's not like a sewer meter thank god there's a water meter he says no but if you're using water we're assuming it's going down the drain and he even

00:11:10 - 00:11:15 | Speaker 1:

said something like so all the water that you take all the water you access you use is then

00:11:15 - 00:11:48 | Speaker 2:

presumed to also be going down the sewer which it is not exactly and so now that's in my head all the time if i'm using the hose outside for something or or filling a bucket of water then i know i'm gonna lately like if i'm using um a bucket of water for something instead of dumping it down the drain i'll take it to a part of the yard and put it there because i want my lawn to be green but i don't water my lawn but i'm trying to like you so anyway i just sort of feel like you could you could take steps to decrease your sewage use but it doesn't matter because they're still just assuming any drop of water you used also went down the sewer it seems like a screw to me

00:11:48 - 00:12:15 | Speaker 1:

luke yeah i mean i'm trying to think of a way that they could measure how much of it actually goes you know when you flush the toilet run the dishwasher etc you know use the disposal because yeah how can they how i'm wondering how they could account for the amount that you use to wash the car or you know the gray water essentially that you use to then water your lawn and stuff i don't know how they would there there has to be a better way i feel that same way

00:12:15 - 00:12:24 | Speaker 2:

especially the oh well you were charging you based on an estimate for a while and then uh now we've actually read the meter and so we're back charging you for other things i'm just like well you should

00:12:24 - 00:13:14 | Speaker 1:

make that more clear that that's what the system you know that they um one of the ways they try to sort of gauge how depressed a community is is based on the water hmm this is a real thing this What do you mean? Well, they can go out to Puget Sound and they can test what the levels of antidepressants are in the water based on people peeing. Yes, yes. Which is shocking to me that that's a measurable thing. They can tell, like, if people are taking more or less of their meds based on that, apparently, that sort of, like, you know, indicator. I remember hearing that somewhere. Yeah. I don't know why that stat just blew my mind. But it's just like somebody out there in a kayak in Puget Sound just like taking up a spoonful and going, it's been a bummer year. It's been a bummer. Yeah, I hope everyone's peeing out massive amounts of antidepressants.

00:13:14 - 00:13:32 | Speaker 2:

I hope nobody's taking urine samples out of my house. I'll be like, what's going on here? THC levels. What did David Sedaris one time say, I think in the book Naked, one of his early books, he talked about he was smoking so much weed that he took a pee test and it was all seeds and stems. Is that everything about you?

00:13:32 - 00:14:16 | Speaker 1:

i think i might be butchering that a little bit um i i'm already endangering the show and the the plan for the show by saying this but i saw a commercial last night while watching the mariner game starring snoop dog i when you said seeds and stems and maybe think of him and i was so convinced last night when i was watching this up at the other place on this weird projector i have but maybe that added to the effect for me. That Snoop Dogg, this is for Jack in the Box. It's some kind of like munchie meal or something. I was so convinced that Snoop Dogg had clearly spent the maximum of 20 minutes shooting this commercial on a green screen. Yeah, I know the one you're talking about. And they had just like chroma-keyed him in.

00:14:16 - 00:14:39 | Speaker 2:

It's the one where they're making a parody of the Corona ads. You think it's going to be a Corona ad. It's not actually Corona. They don't steal the language, but it's like he's standing in front of a green screen That shows like kind of a beach and a palm tree And it's the you know the very simple Backdrop that are in those Corona ads That he does mostly with what like Bad Bunny and Andy Andy Samberg now apparently

00:14:39 - 00:15:00 | Speaker 1:

And then and then Jack Says wrong commercial and then he walks Over to this other one and then he makes A joke that I I hope To God that what Snoop Dogg was named Calvin Brodus or something I hope To God that Calvin Brodus Said you owe me an extra $50,000 For this because the line is like something munchy meal he goes

00:15:00 - 00:15:37 | Speaker 2:

i've been known to get the munchies oh yeah just like it's so lame i know but then it's so cringy watching it yesterday i was convinced and in fact i've made a note by a note to myself i texted myself to remind myself to talk about it today on the show and then before we did the show today i went and re-watched it online it took a long time to find by the way weirdly and now i think maybe he actually was on set with the other people where he's talking about this this munchie meal but when i watched it last night i was for sure that snoop dogg had said i will be in this commercial if you throw up a green screen you tell me my three lines and you let me leave after 20 minutes

00:15:37 - 00:15:42 | Speaker 1:

you think that even like jack and then the other people who are like probably crew people because

00:15:42 - 00:16:10 | Speaker 2:

they're on a sound set or sound stage there was some kind of for me but again i i i'm less confident in that opinion this morning but as of last night i was like clearly they just had him Say three lines and then later Assembled the other people To respond to it like Snoop Dogg Was not in the room or at The studio saying These lines when these other actors Were in the scene with him What do you think can I blow your mind right now

00:16:10 - 00:17:12 | Speaker 1:

Chris is leaving I Have a theory I don't know if you're right about This I haven't rewatched it I'll keep an eye out But I'm sending you a link right now to A sketch From a popular sketch comedy show called I Think You Should Leave. Have we talked about that on the show at all? Chris is leaving. Chris is coming back in. Chris wants to talk about Carl Habib. This is a sketch involving one of our favorite comedians, Patty Harrison, a.k.a. Party Hardison. I don't know if we've ever brought her up on the show before. I don't think so. We certainly haven't. We have certainly not obsessed over her comedy brilliance and brilliance in general. And the sketch that I'm asking you to re-watch right now is the famous new printer Or new copy machine sketch And I'll play the audio from here Luke Santa must have come early Yes and we use this as intro tape sometimes So this is a much longer version of it But will you watch along Do you have that link Do you have it in front of you now Did you text it or send it I emailed it Oh is that a bad thing You can also just Right Nope Nope I can't get it You can find it really quickly

00:17:12 - 00:17:15 | Speaker 2:

Again I can receive emails on this account I cannot send them

00:17:15 - 00:17:52 | Speaker 1:

So Patty Harrison plays the main character The person who overreacts to jokes About the copy machine and the printer in the office space. I have a theory, and I haven't gone back and watched this in a while, but I was watching this maybe a year ago or something, and I was like, I don't think Patty was in the scene with all these other people. I think she's blocked out. I think she's by herself. Are you watching this now? I'm not because I still haven't gotten a whole thing. Oh, okay. Or you can just Google, I think you should leave printer or copier, and it pops up right away. The one I'm looking at here is on Vimeo, but I'm pretty sure it's on the official YouTube page as well. I'm buying time while the listeners can also look this up, and let's see if I'm right.

00:17:52 - 00:18:03 | Speaker 2:

It's time to remind everyone, July 29th, TBTL 4,000th episode at the Neptune Theater. Yes. Okay, I'm getting there. I'm on Vimeo, and are we trying to coordinate this?

00:18:03 - 00:18:08 | Speaker 1:

No, no, you just watch along. I'll play the audio on this end, but let's see. I want to hear your reaction.

00:18:08 - 00:18:25 | Speaker 3:

Whoa, is this the new copier? It sure is, Dennis. They installed it this morning. Can't believe corporate actually listened to our request. Yep, I guess Christmas came early this year. This thing rules. it collates staples pages no more stapling by hand yeah santa should have wrapped it now have

00:18:25 - 00:18:31 | Speaker 1:

you oh shoot sorry about the levels i had to jack up my level so loud because this audio is so quiet

00:18:31 - 00:18:42 | Speaker 2:

that i just blasted you are you still there did i hurt your ears no um you did not hurt my ears and i am watching it and so far i can't find anything to disagree with your theory yeah you

00:18:42 - 00:19:10 | Speaker 1:

know because the levels are so low and because of what i just did the recording did that come out Did that sound like I was somebody who was, like, distorting an affair? No, really. In my head, it was totally loud. But anyway, just continue to watch it yourself. I think that she's always blocked out. Now, is that just the way it's directed and it's a coincidence? Because I see these other blockings where all four people are, like, standing in frame very deliberately. And then they cut to her. And there's never another human being. There's never a five shot.

00:19:10 - 00:19:59 | Speaker 2:

There's never a wide shot with all of the people in it. I don't think so. Is this season one? this is season one i think yeah okay that would sorry i was playing a dangerous game with my mute button which is always gonna lead to trouble for me um if it's season one then i think your theory has even more kind of weight because i bet you that it was like it's a netflix series it's one thing it's who knows if this is going anywhere it's a guy who never really got it together on snl i know he'd done detroiters but like i could tim robinson yeah yes yes i could see a world in which nobody understood what this was really gonna be and so if you're patty harrison and you're busy and they're like hey we want oh there's one did you get there too i'm looking at it and there's one creator zach canan is in the background oh wait i saw

00:19:59 - 00:20:04 | Speaker 1:

A s**t. where she is standing next to a desk where a woman is working

00:20:04 - 00:20:08 | Speaker 2:

on some spreadsheet. Oh, I'm seeing one where she's at her desk and behind her is the co-creator

00:20:08 - 00:20:15 | Speaker 1:

of the program. Oh, is that? Oh, I didn't know that that's who that is. Oh, yeah. Okay, so I don't know. I still feel like there's something in the main conversation. It's weird

00:20:15 - 00:20:27 | Speaker 2:

blocking. It's very weird blocking in that initial thing. I totally understand why you're thinking that and if not for this other this thing we're now getting to, which again podcasting, a famously visual

00:20:27 - 00:20:54 | Speaker 1:

medium. I'm just so bad at this medium i'm just so bad at it but okay now there's one five shot where we actually see the back of patty harrison's head which is very non-specific when tim robinson walks in right right exactly so i don't know i still think there's i feel like they're doing something or i or i'm just like over analyzing it because i've watched the sketch too many times well you first of all you can't watch this sketch too many times that's a good point it's literally impossible i can i really

00:20:54 - 00:21:28 | Speaker 2:

can see a world in which season one of this sketch thing that's going to be on netflix i mean how many things does netflix you know launch a day you know probably five or ten things and most of them don't make a huge dent i could see a thing where it was like patty's schedule was you know what it was and they were like okay we really want to have you in this but like and we can shoot all of it or most of it without you having to be actually in the scene with the other people and that might have been a concession that they made for her that would never happen probably season two certainly not season three but i could see it being a thing in season one the only thing is

00:21:28 - 00:21:57 | Speaker 1:

Well, first of all, the end of this sketch maybe belies my assumption a little bit. She's certainly in some shots with some people. And then if you're talking about actually trying to weave in some sort of complicated thing with these other people, it actually, at this point, it seems like, and also Patty Harrison, especially season one of this show, it's not like she is Bruce Willis. You know what I mean? Or some huge name that they have to work around her schedule. What a name to pull. I don't know why I said that. I just think of him as like the biggest name in celebrity.

00:21:57 - 00:22:17 | Speaker 2:

Including the last Boy Scout three. Anyway, I don't know why I said Bruce Willis. Why are you arguing both sides of your theory effectively? Because now I'm re-watching this. I'm on your team in both ways, and I feel like I'm getting burned on both sides of this grilled cheese Burbank. Is grilled cheese Burbank a show?

00:22:18 - 00:22:25 | Speaker 1:

It's a grilled cheese with ham made with French toast, and they sprinkle a little bit of powdered sugar on it. It's like nothing I've ever had before.

00:22:25 - 00:22:43 | Speaker 2:

cubed watermelon luke can we take one quick moment to talk about that move though that flourish i know you're referencing andy reed yeah uh enjoying his time at the white house but um i have never been a fan of the grilled cheese sandwich where they then throw the powdered

00:22:43 - 00:22:48 | Speaker 1:

sugar on it but it has to i mean you'd only put i'm asking here because i don't know it would

00:22:48 - 00:22:58 | Speaker 2:

have to be a monte cristo i don't like that on a monte cristo i don't like it like to me the the the savory and then the sweet on top of it i've never understood that move and it seems like

00:22:58 - 00:24:07 | Speaker 1:

it only happens on the monte cristo hey by the way the reason you didn't get the video i sent was because i sent it to myself i'm so bad at this i am so bad at this so how's your toilet do you want to talk about that now i sure do how about that photo i hey again i'm just going to keep going to the visual how about that photo i sent you i sent that to a bunch of people i had to take i had to remove my toilet so just to recap yesterday's show uh i believe there was some it seemed like water not standing water on the floor but it seemed like the water underneath the floor boards the vinyl like flooring of my floor exactly i went into the the bathroom the other day it seemed kind of squishy i'm like oh no i'll bet you there's a leak at like the bottom of this toilet i don't know too much about that so i talked on yesterday's show how i watched some youtube videos and i was going to tackle it in the afternoon i did tackle it in the afternoon i removed the toilet i found an old um really i think there were two things going on here the gasket that was under there was not the typical kind that's used they were i think whoever installed this was using the wrong

00:24:07 - 00:24:12 | Speaker 2:

kind of device they were using that would check out with like most of the things that you and

00:24:12 - 00:24:53 | Speaker 1:

veves have experienced in that house right yes and on top of that like they were using a device that should have been used in unison with a more standard wax seal, but there was very little wax that apparently used. I think they used this other thing. They went to the box store. They probably went to Home Depot, threw it in there. But also, there was major erosion on the rubber gasket thing as well that was built in. That cone kind of deal? Which it doesn't even make sense how it would have gotten so chewed up. I was joking to the guy at Ace Hardware. I'm like, maybe I've got to change my diet. um like it does not make sense is that possibly the best place to make that joke because i mean

00:24:53 - 00:25:07 | Speaker 2:

i'm not even being sarcastic we're on the record as loving ace hardware the place with the helpful folks um And I feel like I wouldn't make that joke at a Home Depot, but I would make that joke at an Ace. A guy in a red vest, very helpful. It feels like a safe space.

00:25:07 - 00:25:27 | Speaker 1:

Yeah, most definitely. And we're kind of having a laugh because he's trying to explain. He's like, okay, what is your setup? Is it high up? He said something like he made it sound like he was asking me if my toilet is comfortable. I'm like, you mean am I comfortable on it? He's like, no, no, no. I mean is the pipe flush with the ground? I swear it was on him. He had a very strange communication style.

00:25:27 - 00:25:45 | Speaker 2:

But I was like you say it's a it's a it's a relatively new toilet. It's not comfortable for me, but I would have to run this by Genevieve. We're sticking with it. The thing is, the toilet is comfortable. I should say it's a nice toilet. Now that I see it lying in repose in your bathtub, it's a new fancy toilet.

00:25:45 - 00:26:31 | Speaker 1:

I think it's a relatively new toilet. That's why, again, I think and I don't have I'm pretty sure everything that we've done with this bathroom in kind of re-renovating it ourselves. points to the fact that I think that I don't know what was going on in this bathroom when renters lived here but I think when they put this house on the market they got the cheapest contractors they could find and they just bought some new things but threw it in there as sloppy as possible yeah and then of course then the but the sink and the vanity and everything was pretty trash with like paint on it and stuff so I don't know that but I cannot figure out how they would have installed what looks like a new toilet with such an old disintegrated device and also not using the device properly but it did hold up i guess to their credit for about a year and two months

00:26:31 - 00:26:46 | Speaker 2:

but until it started leaking can i ask a question yeah please when you got the toilet off of there how did the subfloor look how did the thing underneath the laminate look oh i didn't pull up the laminate that's the problem well so the laminate is just like you can't see anything

00:26:46 - 00:27:04 | Speaker 1:

underneath it there's no no here i'll send you a photo of like the i'll send you a photo of like the pipe you know the basically the hole in the floor when i removed the toilet the lamp the lamb the laminate goes right up to that like yeah so i saw no subfloor how about your the yesterday you

00:27:04 - 00:27:16 | Speaker 2:

were saying you're going to leave this thing alone until it stops like when you step on it stops kind of gurgling up or burbling up water are you still going with that that plan yeah or

00:27:16 - 00:27:38 | Speaker 1:

now yeah exactly burbling up water like when i step on the floorboards if there's moisture underneath i'm assuming that this laminate is sitting on top of some sort of like plywood i'm guessing and that plywood is probably pretty soaked right now so when you step on it it's almost like stepping on a sponge a little bit of water will squirt up between the the laminate um you know in between the the cracks of the laminate wow okay yes by the way this looks exactly like

00:27:38 - 00:27:57 | Speaker 2:

it's a combination of the sarlacc where you get digested over a thousand years and um Darth Sidious what is Darth Sidious Google Darth Sidious and then look at this thing you just sent me and then laugh aloud wait am I in the right

00:27:57 - 00:27:58 | Speaker 1:

I don't even know how to spell Sidious

00:27:58 - 00:28:00 | Speaker 2:

maybe I mean Darth Maul

00:28:00 - 00:28:04 | Speaker 1:

Darth Sidious is Sheev Palpatine

00:28:04 - 00:28:08 | Speaker 2:

I don't know sorry I meant Darth Maul god I got my Darth's messed up

00:28:08 - 00:28:12 | Speaker 1:

Darth Maul is the guy with the lightsaber that goes both ways

00:28:12 - 00:28:15 | Speaker 2:

forget what I just said Now, Google Darth Maul.

00:28:15 - 00:28:17 | Speaker 1:

Okay, Darth Maul. Yeah, he's got the, he's got like this.

00:28:17 - 00:28:21 | Speaker 2:

And then look at the thing you just sent me and tell me there's not a similarity between that and Darth Maul.

00:28:21 - 00:28:26 | Speaker 1:

Darth Maul's face or what? They're orange. Oh, I see the color red. Okay, yeah, yeah.

00:28:26 - 00:28:29 | Speaker 2:

I don't know. This is what happens when a bad joke gets into the water supply.

00:28:29 - 00:28:52 | Speaker 1:

Here, I'm going to send you two photos now. I'm sending all this via text, by the way. I'm sending you, again, this is just great podcasting. I'm sending you some more photos of this rubber gasket that is just like blown away. I mean, I don't know if I should be proud or horrified, but I don't understand, like, how, if that was new a year ago, how it would have eroded like that, or did they use an old, yeah, I sent that to my dad. I was like, hey, I think we found the problem.

00:28:52 - 00:29:02 | Speaker 2:

That looks like Jabba the Hutt after Leia strangles him. I'm just going to keep trying the Star Wars approach until we get somewhere. Did she strangle something? No spoilers.

00:29:03 - 00:29:04 | Speaker 1:

And also that.

00:29:04 - 00:29:06 | Speaker 2:

Yeah, boy, that thing is.

00:29:06 - 00:29:56 | Speaker 1:

Yeah, and by the way, it looks really, really gross, but what you're seeing there is actually a little bit of wax. But there was – I can't explain it, Luke. The whole thing was a bit – not a mystery as in – Did you put it on a plate? Did I put what on a plate? The white thing, that's part of the – No, see, that's the confusing thing. Everything that you look at online makes it very clear what this setup is supposed to look like, right? These guys were using something different, and that's what you're looking at here. It's not your traditional wax seal, but this thing is it's called a hydro cap or something. And so I was watching videos, but I was like, wait a second. I was watching videos of how to install a hydro cap, and you're supposed to install it in addition to a wax seal. And I don't think these people did that. There's a little bit of wax under there, but I feel like it's left over from something else. I honestly don't understand.

00:29:56 - 00:29:57 | Speaker 2:

They pulled a mandadorian.

00:29:57 - 00:31:02 | Speaker 1:

They clearly pulled a mandadorian. I mean, like the Ewoks on the planet Elf. What is their planet called? Do you know? I feel like you should know that. I do know this. Endor. Endor. Yes, yes, yes. I knew it started with an E. Anyway, so the project is at this. So I sent you that photo, and this is what I started saying, is the video I watched saying how to replace this gasket thing, they warned, you're going to need to get to the bottom of the toilet to put the new gasket on, But don't just tip the toilet backwards, like on your bathroom floor or something, because no matter how well you dry out the tank and the bowl, there is going to be water in the pipes in the toilet somewhere. So do it in your tub or take it outside because water might spill out. And so I thought that was a very helpful hint. So much like Marshawn Lynch in that plumbing commercial we were talking about, I picked the toilet up like a big, heavy baby, and I carried it over to the bathtub, and I laid it down in there as gently as possible. And I believe in your text message, you said the toilet is resting. Doesn't it look like I should tuck it in? I sent that to you.

00:31:02 - 00:31:06 | Speaker 2:

The toilet is sleeping anyway. It does definitely look like it's at rest. It looks like the toilet.

00:31:07 - 00:31:23 | Speaker 1:

I sent that to another friend who said, and I was trying to think of the words to describe this as well. It's like if it was a cartoon toilet, you could see the lips of that toilet lid like fluttering as it snores sort of. It looks like a cartoon toilet laying down in a tub.

00:31:23 - 00:31:45 | Speaker 2:

I wish I could remember the specifics of this tweet because it was one of the best ever, not by me, but just like that I saw. It was like, you're either a honk, shoo, or a woo-hoo person, something about like the two kinds of snoring. And when I saw this person write that, I was like, that perfectly describes. I feel like this toilet would be a woo-hoo.

00:31:46 - 00:33:03 | Speaker 1:

Yes, exactly. If you can stand two pictures of my toilet in various states two days in a row. Keep them coming. I will – oh, no, I'm going to use it as a show pic today, this picture of my sleeping toilet as it sits in the tub. And so this is where we are now. I went to the hardware store. I bought a more standard wax seal situation. I bought a new, like, white – I don't know if you would call it a gasket or the white O-ring that should be on the ground that they had somehow skipped because they were using this other device. I threw away that rotting thing. I bought two of the things that should be more standard on a toilet. But as soon as the floor seems totally dried out, I will install it. I stepped on the floor today and it was still a little bit squishy. And so I'm like, I just want to I don't want to even I want the floor to be totally seemingly dried out before I install this toilet again. Because if it seems like the floor is not going to fully dry out, then Luke, this is what like pulling up flooring. That's that's where I think that's the Rubicon for me. like i'm happy to pull up a toilet and see if i can fix it and if not call a plumber and put it back together but once you start pulling up flooring luke i'm out of my element man i do not so i'm hoping this dries out and even if it doesn't i would just put that toilet back put

00:33:03 - 00:33:14 | Speaker 2:

down the you know the various things put that toilet back on tighten it down tighter than a tick and just you know what that's a future andrew problem well i think either way it is i think

00:33:14 - 00:33:17 | Speaker 1:

eventually that's going to be something we deal with it may come back to haunt you but you'd be

00:33:17 - 00:33:33 | Speaker 2:

surprised how long you can get away with just really tightening down on that flange and like i think it's going to be fine and if it's not going to be fine like if the subfloor is you know rotting those chickens are going to come home to roost at some point but this is not that day but

00:33:33 - 00:33:45 | Speaker 1:

we'll be super wealthy podcasters in charge of our own podcast network as long as we keep focusing on the visuals right right here i want to send you another this is as long as we keep sending

00:33:45 - 00:33:50 | Speaker 2:

each other pictures of our toilets and then narrating it to the listeners i i mean we got

00:33:50 - 00:34:45 | Speaker 1:

to make some money on this is simply too good i gotta say oh one other thing i'll say about this and then i want to tell you what i gotta say i also want the floor to dry out as much as possible because um i mean it's pretty clear that i i believe isolated the problem here and i'm pretty sure that i can reinstall this and fix the problem but i want the floor to be as dry as possible and not making any squishy sounds before i do that because i need a control in testing it when i put it back on if the squishiness went away and then suddenly it's back and then we do got to call a plumber or figure something out so that's the other reason i want to give it a baseline time and we are so lucky to for the first time in our lives have a have a place where we have two bathrooms so even though genevieve uh hasn't cleaned her bathroom in a long time and i was But that toilet of yours is, but just to clarify, it is a joke toilet that you can only fart in, right? The toilet downstairs, the one that's in the, it's just a joke, you can only... Did you find a receipt for it? That's right. I had these two...

00:34:45 - 00:34:45 | Speaker 2:

Has this ever happened to you?

00:34:45 - 00:34:49 | Speaker 1:

I had these two large plumbers come who were going to take a look at it. Turbo time!

00:34:49 - 00:34:51 | Speaker 2:

You're not part of turbo time!

00:34:51 - 00:34:59 | Speaker 1:

What I was going to say, though, that I got to say here is, two days ago, I believe, on this show, you and I paid homage...

00:35:00 - 00:35:26 | Speaker 3:

to pat say jack like no other podcast has ever done you know so much so can i i'm sorry yeah by sorry by watching an episode of of super password from the 1980s that pat say jack had nothing to do with and we played along and luke i gotta say i don't know if that was a good podcast or not i think it was i got some good feedback from listeners i don't know if i've had that much fun on the podcast alone can we just do that all the time it was such honestly like why

00:35:26 - 00:35:43 | Speaker 4:

have we been why have we been like you know sort of putting so much work into these show sheets and prepping stories all we need to do is go back and find game shows from the 80s and play along pause them before they give the answer and play along that was without a doubt the best podcast

00:35:43 - 00:35:49 | Speaker 3:

we've done in conservatively five years i know i was so much goddamn fun so anyway that's what i

00:35:49 - 00:36:21 | Speaker 4:

gotta say also it was how uh becca found out that pat sajak was retiring because she had given me this coffee cup that she got at work and i was using it that day and i sent a picture like hey i'm using the coffee cup thank you for giving it to me but she was like pat sajak's retiring because the coffee cup was sitting atop a printed out article that said what it said was l of fortune host to retire because the coffee cup was sitting on wheel right right but she was like and i was like is this how you're getting your news now she was like yes it is pat sajak is retiring i thought

00:36:21 - 00:36:31 | Speaker 3:

your show sheet was going to be in the background that would even be better it's like pat sajak is retiring and andrew's got a broken toy toy anyway um uh okay let's um let's see here what do we

00:36:31 - 00:37:36 | Speaker 4:

what would you like after the break i did listen back to this so i was driving up and back from the uh other place i'm working on yesterday so i had some time in the car and i did uh take a moment to enjoy yesterday's episode of tbtl which i rarely do and first of all i enjoy it or you rarely listen to both yeah when i listen to it rarely i enjoy it rarely no i actually i i very much enjoyed it um but i very much noticed how many commercials i feel do you think it's possible are we like a what's the are we like a bed bath and beyond in a abandoned mall that's just like on its last legs to where they're just sending all of the like odd sized cutting boards or something like what is going on we had like eight commercials yesterday oh i see what you're saying i didn't realize i feel like they're just dumping i mean they were nice one was from uh you for stitch fix one was from me uh for a battery charger oh no no the air condition ac charge

00:37:36 - 00:37:44 | Speaker 3:

whatever by the way we got everybody do that we got an impassioned voicemail from a listener just saying i'm glad you guys are advertising that that thing has saved my bacon so many times yeah

00:37:44 - 00:38:19 | Speaker 4:

And then there was one or two that were just like The Ocean Alliance I did, I think Yeah, one was not even a Carvana It was something I've heard on other more popular podcasts Like it's a very general thing But it was a lot of commercials So what I was thinking last night as I was driving back down here was I want to let the listeners know that we have loved our time at 8pm But if you are getting a little tired of hearing eight commercials during your TVTL Hold on Give it like 14 more days or something Because we are soon to go to a much more commercial-free model

00:38:19 - 00:38:23 | Speaker 3:

Yes, exactly And that model is going to rely on you, the tens of listeners

00:38:23 - 00:38:25 | Speaker 4:

And we will come back right after these commercials

00:38:25 - 00:38:36 | Speaker 2:

Do you have a car? We was hoping for some razzle-dazzle Razzle-dazzle That's right, man, razzle-dazzle

00:38:36 - 00:38:40 | Speaker 1:

On your mark On your mark Get set Get set Now ready Ready Go

00:38:40 - 00:38:57 | Speaker 4:

See? Y'all thought we were done doing Dazzling Donors. We've got a few last Dazzlers that we want to thank for donating a dazzling amount of dough and supporting the show. Also, we like to keep you on your toes as a listener.

00:38:57 - 00:39:15 | Speaker 3:

I also like the way you sort of adopted the language of those who feel like the haters are always out to get them. You all thought that we couldn't do more Dazzling Donors on this show. So, yeah, I'm clapping back. We are dazzling back.

00:39:15 - 00:40:00 | Speaker 4:

We are clapping back on behalf of our friend Susan Thaler out there in Shrub Oak, New York. Longtime friend of the show. Longtime supporter. Susan says, each year I think this time will be different. I'll be prepared. I believe it was yesterday, Susan, when I said I'm always trying to be a different version of myself. So I feel you on that. Susan says, I'll submit a truly dazzling donor message. I'll move all the tens to laughter, tears, and huzzahs. February comes, and once again, words escape me. There is so much I want to express. How can I fit it all in? Gah, just let me drink. In brief, I want to mention that's a 30 Rock reference. Lest people think that Susan is...

00:40:00 - 00:40:20 | Speaker 1:

descending into a life of daytime drinking or that you are by the way can i just mention one thing here we are reading one out of two ain't bad we are we are i'm reading susan's message so late in the game here because of a clerical error on my part not susan's part so when susan mentions like oh i was trying to submit something yeah way back in february susan was on top of the

00:40:20 - 00:43:06 | Speaker 2:

game i unfortunately was not in brief you fellas give uh keep me uh good in good times nope you fellas keep me going in good times reading is it's a lifelong journey of learning Andrew and I'm you put two G's that close together and I'm going to have some real troubles you fellas keep me going in good times and bad I adore you both mostly Luke for his reading skills the amazing tens I've met virtually and IRL have made my life so much richer of course there's also the joy of sharing podcast devotion with actual and TBTL daughter Ruby In January, we were excited to launch the Sisterhood of the Traveling Tonight Pants on our trip to Antigua. Love you, Rubes. Golly. When are we doing a TBTL event in Antigua? I guess when we get the invite from Susan and Ruby. And the hotel costs covered. Again, this is a small business. Love you, Rubes. And once again, I'll give a shout out to my Eleven's small business, Moonlight Marine. Dan builds beautiful handcrafted wooden kayaks, canoes, and stand-up paddleboards. They are works of art. Andrew, when I tell you that I went to Dan's YouTube page today, I went to Moonlight Marine today before the show to make sure that Susan wasn't lying. And then I watched an entire, like, eight-minute television story about incredibly beautiful and ornate handcrafted things where they went to Shrub Oak and filmed Dan making one of these kayaks. These are incredible. These are beautiful, beautiful and, I assume, watertight kayaks and crafts. How many did you buy, to be honest? I'm saving up for an $1,100 toilet seat. once i have that handled then i'm buying many things from moonlight marine for real though like i really did watch the video today and dan's work is really quite something i believe it um uh let's see he also does repairs on small watercraft not just wooden ones check out his website at moonlight marine dot net come on let's give him that tbtl bump and let's do that indeed because again i didn't mean susan was kind of keeping dan's sugar on the shelf a little bit i didn't know there was a whole like a hgtv type of deal going on yeah so uh thank you susan congratulations dan ruby we love you hope to see all of you hope that dan kayaks out from shrub oak for on uh july 29th for the tbtl 4000th episode and you know if you want to next year make your donation in a handmade kayak that i assume retails for many thousands of dollars tax purposes we can we

00:43:06 - 00:43:11 | Speaker 1:

cannot accept uh we cannot accept watercraft are you a hundred percent sure on that i'm pretty what

00:43:11 - 00:43:15 | Speaker 2:

if you need one in your basement if things go really sideways maybe repair that is true like

00:43:15 - 00:43:21 | Speaker 1:

we i mean what is our logo but you and i in a wooden boat that maybe i was thinking about that

00:43:21 - 00:43:33 | Speaker 2:

the other day because uh the when we did the 2000th episode at the neptune it's you and i in that boat of mine and now our logo is us in a different boat rowing somewhere it's a very kind

00:43:33 - 00:43:45 | Speaker 1:

of nautical themed program it is and of course one of the biggest like one of the long running threads on the show for a while was all of your misadventures and boat ownership boats ownership

00:43:45 - 00:43:57 | Speaker 2:

you might yes um but i've managed to uh repair that uh fissure in my life by only having one boat that's currently on a trailer as long as i own no boats that are in the water i can't have

00:43:57 - 00:44:22 | Speaker 1:

no crashes andrew you know i guess this would be illegal but honestly the next tv telethon if we ever have a budget for tbt elathons again and go on adventures what we should do is hire somebody to pull us across the country in that boat you and i in the boat yes the whole time but pulled across the trailer works like a charm i think that rich did it other than installing the axle

00:44:22 - 00:44:28 | Speaker 2:

upside down rich did an amazing job fixing that trailer anyway thanks susan we really do appreciate

00:44:28 - 00:44:50 | Speaker 1:

at you maestro nice job man it's been you know a couple weeks we did that you were just like right there yeah i'm really concerned about the audio coming out of my computer luke it's not sounding bad where i know but i have to turn it up louder and louder every day i feel like something's going on like is my computer just like losing it's like there's no scientific

00:44:50 - 00:44:56 | Speaker 2:

reason why my computer what's your computer's current prescription right exactly is it like

00:44:56 - 00:44:59 | Speaker 1:

Is it 2,200? Hey, computers, do you not have the vitamins?

00:45:00 - 00:45:14 | Speaker 2:

you used to when you were younger like there's something going on with my computer where everything is turned up like nothing has changed your computer can't hump anymore just like when I was trying to play that sketch earlier like I had to turn everything up so loudly in order for you to even hear it

00:45:14 - 00:45:25 | Speaker 1:

anyway I understand that frustration of feeling like your personal system is not, audio system is not working correctly but if it's any consolation everything is sounding normal to us but I know that doesn't address what you're worried about

00:45:25 - 00:45:35 | Speaker 2:

yeah it's just like it's more representative of like me kind of changing, getting older the computer getting older not having that vitality but this is not a sex thing right no

00:45:35 - 00:46:11 | Speaker 1:

no no no it's a sound thing it's a vitality thing it's totally yeah no definitely before we start vim and vigor luke i feel like i need to just clarify for the listeners before we started recording today's show you and i were chatting about those sort of commercials that tend to play on like sports radio and talk radio aimed at men about like you know let's say uh performance in the bedroom but you were saying that there's a commercial that's running that is trying its hardest to never address what the real thing is which is we want to help you with your bedroom performance they keep talking about vitality and at the very end of the commercial they go and also

00:46:11 - 00:47:31 | Speaker 2:

like you know boners there's i mean there's a whole bunch of them that sort of do that but like there's been a switch from just advertising you know ed medication to and i think these are probably even more charlatan-y, if that's the right word. I believe that's exactly the right word. That are just kind of like these men's centers where it's all about like whether or not it's some men's medicine they give you. Oh, another thing they've been doing is like, hey, Issaquah, Thursday is ED day. They're trying to, like, what's going on on AM radio is bananas, Luke. There's one of these centers is like claiming ED day for certain municipalities around the Puget Sound region. I don't know what's going on with that In Issaquah, it's ED day Come on in and we'll all bitch about our ex-wives And why we don't have custody of our kids There's some like lawyers ED attorneys for men Wait, what? These commercials I hear are terrible There's one Father's Day commercial now That's like, you fought to keep your kids It's like, I don't even know what's I need to stop listening to AM Sports Radio, man It is toxic over there Maestro? Wait, hold on You threw me for a loop. You can't do it twice. Did the music run out? Oh, my God. The music did run out. Oh, my God. I'm losing my vitality. Oh, my God.

00:47:32 - 00:47:41 | Speaker 1:

You know who is as vital as one could be is Scott Starr in Seattle, Washington. Another person that I accidentally skipped with Susan earlier.

00:47:41 - 00:47:43 | Speaker 2:

My apologies, Scott.

00:47:44 - 00:47:57 | Speaker 1:

Scott says, every year I am a terrible procrastinator when it comes to filling out my dazzling donor form. And this year I waited so long that I'm writing my message after the big announcement. Well, this one's maybe you missed it, but this is a fairly new vintage.

00:47:57 - 00:48:10 | Speaker 2:

Yes, but I have a couple that we'll be reading tomorrow that came in within the past couple of days. So that's not on us. But I just do want to say that Susan and Scott, I had you in the schedule. You were locked and loaded, and then somehow I skipped it, and I apologize.

00:48:11 - 00:49:29 | Speaker 1:

I just love that Scott took the time to send this message, and even knowing that we're going independent, Which tells me Scott is going to continue To dazzle us with his donation going forward Scott says Luke and Andrew I want to wish you good luck On this new chapter in TBTL I remember when TBTL was cancelled Damn Scott You've been in this for a little longer than a minute And Luke made TBTL An independent podcast I recall donating to something called Burrow Productions Did you have to start a company? This is me talking now Andrew If we could take a moment for me to say OMG Yes, I still have a PayPal account called Burrow Productions. This was something that because you had to create a little LLC or something back in the day? I did create an LLC with none of the sort of actual legal rigor that we are using to set up the new version of TBTL. I thought that it was, you know, you just set up a PayPal account. You maybe send off a couple emails. You form an LLC called Burrow Productions. And you don't ask any questions. And if Scott knows what's good for him, he won't ask any either. In fact, Scott, even bringing this up, is borderline libelous. Yes, Burrow Productions was a thing. Why Burrow?

00:49:29 - 00:49:31 | Speaker 2:

I think I should know this.

00:49:31 - 00:49:32 | Speaker 1:

I think it was Burbank and Romo.

00:49:33 - 00:49:34 | Speaker 2:

Oh, wow.

00:49:34 - 00:50:00 | Speaker 1:

Okay, no, I don't think I would have gotten there. Which is actually pretty clever. Yeah. If you think about it. So Scott says he donated to Burrow Productions to keep the podcast going. I would never have predicted it would still be here 13 years later. Better than ever. Oh, Scott, thanks for saying better than ever. We really appreciate that. And I'm with you. I would have never predicted this would be here 13 years later. I have really been leaning into this for.

00:50:00 - 00:50:41 | Speaker 2:

4000th episode thing andrew when i'm just out and about in portland like usually if people if it comes up the question comes up like what do you do for your job stuff i will say like oh i work in radio or i work you know for cbs tv i'm kind of vague about things but since we announced the 4000th episode i'm not even kidding a couple times it's come up i've said i host a podcast and we're about to have our 4000th episode it is somehow in i've got my vitality back there's something about the the like insanity of doing 4 000 episodes of this that really is making me feel super proud of us and more importantly the listeners that's really good

00:50:41 - 00:51:41 | Speaker 1:

to hear and interesting because i've been having the opposite issue i had a really embarrassing moment uh last sunday uh somebody was asking me uh what i do for a living and i still had to sort of cling to the apm thing because this was like i don't know a couple that's maybe i don't know 10 15 years older than me uh seattle clearly like public radio listeners and so i was able to like sort of like i did throw a marketplace down yeah exactly and i did a terrible job of explaining the show they kept asking me so is it what is it about and i kept saying well it started as a radio show it's like that's not what it's about andrew but anyway like i feel like when we lose that i i'm excited about every aspect of going independent i'm a little nervous but excited about going independent but i lose the ability just to say i work for public radio which is my favorite thing because i don't now i am a person who just has his own podcast that is not affiliated with anything else and it just there's a stigma attached to that what if we just keep saying it's public radio

00:51:41 - 00:52:22 | Speaker 2:

what if we do i mean honestly like how many people are gonna bust us scott star scott probably not scott scott's hella cool he's been here since the day he donated to borough production yeah that's right like i really i think that there's an actual argument of like a legitimate argument to be made for calling this public radio because it only exists because of the donations of the listeners like this is the public radio model now it's not tax deductible we want to be very clear about that going forward but it is sort of you know what i mean like it's sort of intrinsically what public radio is all about i think so i was trying to explain this to

00:52:22 - 00:53:43 | Speaker 1:

another friend of ours who also took her show i'll just say rachel bell took her show independent recently now she did not have a background in public radio but she took her podcast independent from uh you know it started on a commercial radio station cairo radio and i was sort of like getting all hyped up about our model about how we're going to lean fully into the support of the listeners as opposed to just like trying to like scrape together a bunch of auto ads or whatever and i was the more i talked and i know i sounded like a loon and she started her face started to screw up more and more she heard me talk because i was just like i feel like i want to turn back the clock on how we podcast maybe i've said this on the show before but like the the industry has changed so much like from just from having dynamic ads that change and being able to like throw new ads in the back catalog all that stuff is really cool on a technological level and I understand why that's really valuable to podcast but like I want to go back to like finding partners like you know like commercial partners who we can just like talk about them baked into the content if somebody wanted to do like a really good partnership with us or something and like what else was I thinking like I want to take almost everything that modern podcasting is doing and just say you know what we're not like other podcasts we're not chasing the same thing other podcasts are doing we have a community here and we just need to work for that and i am luke this is the beginning of my

00:53:43 - 00:56:09 | Speaker 2:

turn back the podcast clock move love it podcasting as cool today as it was yesterday 2008 yes this is your kicksification of tbtl um all of that is to say we're going broke if i'm in charge of this I read an article on Defector the other day about what they were saying is effectively the end of Gimlet. Did you see this? No. So Gimlet laid off 200 people. Yes, yes. They were bought out by Spotify some years ago, and I think the people at the very top of Gimlet did pretty well with that. But in being absorbed into Spotify and then this latest round of layoffs, again, this one person writing in Defector was saying this is effectively the end of Gimlet. And then they went on this kind of long thing about the sort of – what's the word I'm looking for? The kind of highs and lows of the podcasting industry or maybe the waxes and wanes of the podcasting bubble as seen through the lens of Gimlet because it was like kind of no industry. And then you had Alex Bloomberg starting Gimlet at around the same time that you had like This American Life dropping cereal. And then all of a sudden everybody wanted a podcast. There was all this money and all these radio producers were being hired to make all these podcasts. It was just like. real kind of you know boom and uh we are living in the middle of a podcast boom and then it's now contracting and a lot of these sort of dreams of having a show that's of a high enough quality or interesting enough that enough people listen that you can then sell carvana ads it's not really working out for like 90 of the podcasts and as i was reading this i was thinking thank flippin god we have Susan Thaler and Scott Starr and many more like them because with this little kind of crew and you're going to hear much more about this when we get to TBTL-a-thon week so I'm that was I think my first TBTL-a-thon week I kind of I slurred that a little bit and our friend Jim Hsu Dr. Jim Hsu said 4,000th episode you're going to really be struggling with that it's starting thank God that we have this very small but loyal group of folks that are willing to you know voluntarily donate to this show because we we couldn't a we couldn't compete in that world of just trying to get enough listeners and be I don't even that world's working

00:56:09 - 00:57:45 | Speaker 1:

for a lot of shows yeah I think it was very bubbly and that's why it kind of bothered me when because we like well we're gonna they just saw that there was some money and popularity and podcasting so they said well then we need to apply a Hollywood studio model to it right away and everybody just started conglomerating you know everybody just started saying like well then i'll buy this and then i'll buy this and i'll buy this and then like the the the idea like the idea of being popular is measurable like a certain number of downloads but the idea of being like super profitable in that way it's really hard to see after things started getting really bundled together like that like where did the money ever get realized in the way that they were treating it And I don't think so. And I think that like and again, not that everything that has happened in the industry has been has been dumb, but certainly that conglomeration, I don't think has been good for the art form. And what's going on with I mean, you basically said it, but what's going on with Gimlet is like under the under the umbrella of Spotify, they combined Gimlet with another network that they acquired. And I can't remember the name of that network off the top of my head. And this acquisition, I think, happened or this kind of combining of these two under the umbrella happened, I'm going to say, at least a year ago or something. But even at the time, people were like, this makes no sense. These are just two companies that Spotify bought and then grouped together. But there's the production model was totally different. Like, why are you grouping it together? And the problem started back then. But I think like the Gimlet people got, what, 300 million or something. So 200, I believe. Was it 200? Okay. That's my memory.

00:57:46 - 00:57:51 | Speaker 2:

I could be wrong on that. Anyway, yeah. So it's kind of like. Well, you have a theme, by the way, for the podcasting bubble. Do you know this? I put this together.

00:57:51 - 00:57:58 | Speaker 1:

I'm the type of girl you want to chew all of my bubble gum. I'm the type of girl you want to chew all of my bubble gum. I'm the type of girl you want to chew all of my bubble gum.

00:57:58 - 00:58:05 | Speaker 2:

We need to talk to Tori just saying something in here. It's about working smarter, not harder. Yeah, exactly. In the new podcasting economy.

00:58:07 - 00:58:11 | Speaker 1:

It's time to do the damn thing. Better tell you free. First things first.

00:58:11 - 00:59:04 | Speaker 2:

Anyway, thanks to our dazzling donors. We really appreciate it. And as has now been made abundantly clear, we wouldn't be here without you. Oh, your computer's vital. A little too? See, this is part of the—I don't want to get sidetracked, but part of the problem is because of the ongoing audio issues I have here, I never know how loud the music is. Like, yesterday I was trying to play the Home Depot music, but I kept the whole time feeling stressed that it was, like, blasting you out, which I was probably overcompensating so that it was not even audible to the listeners. But anyway, sorry if that was a bit on the loud side. What would you – we probably only have time for one of these two stories by me. Neither one reflects particularly well. How I'm being petty about a drag show or how I almost got my cat killed yesterday.

00:59:04 - 00:59:18 | Speaker 1:

I need to hear what happened to Bubbles at some point, but you've talked so much, and I highlighted at the top of the show this drag show thing, so I think we need to get some closure on this, because this has come up several shows in a row now, and we don't know what you're talking about.

00:59:18 - 00:59:45 | Speaker 2:

I was getting some emails for a period of time that I literally thought was spam, and then I happened to be sitting, when I was in San Diego, Becca and I were coming back, and we were on the airport shuttle from the rental car place to the airport. And I said, I keep getting these like spam emails from somebody. And she looked at the name. She was like, we went to a thing with that person. I was like, wow. Well, they've outmaneuvered me then by sending me spam from a human who's just trying to contact me.

00:59:45 - 00:59:46 | Speaker 1:

Somebody that you have a personal relationship with.

00:59:46 - 00:59:59 | Speaker 2:

I don't have a personal relationship with them, but we had gone to this kind of event that had been hosted by these folks. And so I had been deleting these emails for a long time. And finally, I looked at this one because Becca was like, no, that's a person that.

01:00:00 - 01:02:57 | Speaker 1:

you've been in the room with it's not spam and it was an invite to be part of this uh thing that's happening in portland i want to say july 10th 11th and 12th it's going to be at darcell's uh darcell was a very beloved and extremely long tenured um a drag performer here in portland in fact we um you know actually i don't actually know what how what gender darcell identified at as but we had darcel on live wire at one point darcel was at that point in their like probably early 80s or something so there's this club in portland called darcells that's pretty famous and this is going to be a three-day like uh straight like you know 24 hours a day for three days you can do the math at home you guys have calculators i don't um and it's supposed to be the longest uh continuous drag show ever and they have apparently reached out to the the guinness world records folks and And so anyway, they were asking me if I wanted to be one of the MCs. And I said, sure, that sounds really fun. And then there was a sort of Excel spreadsheet. It was really like a Google Doc that you could go in and say, like, these are the times, these are the couple of hours that would be the best for me to MC, which is presumably just kind of keep things running, get up on stage and keep the trains moving. So I said sure I'd love to do that That sounds really fun And then the other day And I just I cannot overstate this I understand that What I am about to say right now is A bad character reference on me And it's also not the point of this The point of this is to support Drag shows and people that are Right now really in the crosshairs From a certain segment of American society It's not a Conversation around how small is Luke's name on the poster Andrew but it's very small very almost not on the poster after listed after many people that I feel like I'm a bigger draw then and I right when I read it I thought put this out of your mind this is not the point of this this is not about you and I can't exactly and fully put it out of my mind because I want to know what the metric was for now I don't have it in front of me But it's like, you know, the big people on the poster are like Cheryl Strayed, huge, Fred Armisen, huge, Cameron Esposito, John Cameron Mitchell. Like it's a those those should be the big names. But you start to get down to the teeny tiny bottom where you have to get out the magnifying glass. And there I think I'm after Beetlejuice from the Howard Stern show. OK, I think I finally got this here. Can I read this in order, please? I mean again I understand that this makes me a bad person this is not the point of this at all I cannot be more I cannot try to make that more clear that I know I am wrong in this nobody email

01:02:57 - 01:03:15 | Speaker 2:

me I get it I'm bad you know what this reminds me of seriously I think it was on yesterday's show that you introduced me to a commercial where it's a it looks like a trailer for a movie but it ends being a commercial for an for an eyeglasses place and the the the text on the subtitles

01:03:15 - 01:03:21 | Speaker 1:

you can see Luke Burbank's name on the poster uh you don't need an eye check my um my my eyesight

01:03:21 - 01:04:04 | Speaker 2:

is really bad and I have a small computer because like even though obviously if my eyesight is bad I should get a big computer screen I don't like a computer taking up so much space on my on my desk especially when I have guests in here so I stick with this computer that probably is not the best fit for me but anyway i'm having trouble it is like an eye test so it starts really big up top peppermint now i don't know who peppermint is is that a drag performer maybe my guess would be a probably a beloved drag performer but it seems like most of the but okay yeah okay maybe this is a mixture of both the mcs and the performer so peppermint is huge across the top it's justified so the p is all the way to the left and the t is all the way to the right it's like nobody shares a line with peppermint then busy phillips huge name and frankie grand i don't know frankie

01:04:04 - 01:04:09 | Speaker 1:

Not familiar, but again, I'm going to guess maybe somebody from that community that I'm not aware of.

01:04:09 - 01:04:14 | Speaker 2:

Cheryl Strayed. I know that name. Can you remind me? She wrote the book Wild. Oh, okay.

01:04:14 - 01:04:20 | Speaker 1:

They made the Reese Witherspoon movie, and she also is Dear Sugar, this advice columnist, and has been writing that for a long time.

01:04:21 - 01:05:16 | Speaker 2:

Okay, Fred Armisen. Honestly, and I'm glad that Busy Phillips is way up there, but I'm kind of surprised that Fred Armisen isn't higher. I mean, that seems like a get. That's a big get. Fred Armisen is huge. um punky johnson caitlin ohashi uh paula oh paula pell wow snl writer she's yeah you know first of all i didn't know that this is where you were taking this and i gotta say like oh yeah that isn't that isn't really defendable but also like paula pell is way way smaller than peppermint maybe paula pell just looms larger in my um in my uh mind but then carrie brownstein right is even further down than that now i'm now i'm skipping ahead though cameron esposito you mentioned um portugal the man is pretty far down there um the musicians uh would i move above them if i mentioned that their piano player used to work at the coffee shop down the street from my old house in seattle and we were friends before he was in portugal the man you know what's weird

01:05:16 - 01:05:41 | Speaker 1:

get me moved up the list you know what's weird the more you talk the further your name slips down in this poster it's disappearing like michael j fox's hand and it's really weird i will say though that you are listed in almost the part where i can't read it anymore and i'm not even saying that i'd be honest um where are you down there oh there you are yeah you are in the part where it's like if you need to lean in to read this you need new glasses which i clearly do

01:05:41 - 01:08:00 | Speaker 2:

can i uh can i dig this hole deeper for myself oh sure yeah what could go wrong so a lot to vary So here's what I think. First of all, I'm just being a sad version of myself that I didn't even actually realize I was because a lot of times when it comes to, like, job stuff, I tend to – I'm very happy to low-key myself. And if somebody asks, you know, what I do for a job, I'll say, like, oh, I work on a radio show. I work on a podcast. I work on a TV show. That's what I always say. I don't say like I'm a co-host of the podcast Or I'm the host of a radio show Or I'm a correspondent on the TV thing I think I take some kind of great pleasure In sort of low-keying myself But somehow when others low-key me It high-key annoys me But here's the other thing I think that there's a Not a huge chance But a somewhat existing chance That someone might see my name on the list And be like oh the guy from LiveWare It's Portland right the guy from live wire that we have you know we put 400 people in a theater every other week it might have not been the worst thing for them to make my name larger just because it might have actually drawn some people in portland now that's the like me masking my insecurity in a cloak of practicality like i do think that it like there are many people above me on that list who unless they're someone who's huge in drag and i don't recognize them are just like it seemed capricious how they figured out who was going to be on the list. Now, but let me say this, Andrew. I read to the bottom of the email that came out that was like, we're currently working on figuring out the schedule. And I was like, I'm not getting the time that I, you know, went on the Google Doc and said these are the hours that I can do this. If they, let me ask you this. If they give me like 3 a.m. to 5 a.m. on the third day, and i say that just doesn't work for me am i no longer an ally i mean i've already shown myself to not be an ally because i'm just concerned with how big my name is but like is there any universe in which they give me a bad time slot and by bad i just mean like would totally disrupt my life for us doing the show etc and i say no what happens then well okay let me let me build

01:08:00 - 01:09:21 | Speaker 1:

up to that because that's a bigger conversation but i have a couple of things on my mind first of all peppermint and as soon as i said this before i thought oh i'll bet you they're famous from RuPaul's Drag Race, which Peppermint was a runner-up on that show. So that's probably a nationally known name as a drag performer, and that makes sense. And I would also argue that any of the drag performers who are above you on this list makes total sense. This is their community, this is their event, and you are there to support that. I would like to start a fight between you and Paula Pell, only because that's been a lifelong dream of me. I don't think I'm going to win that one. She's a sharp, sharp wit. but um yeah so i i don't know i don't know most of the people who are in small print above you on this so i'm not going to weigh in on that i will say this like any event like if they say we are putting this together tell us when you're available and you in uh good faith say i am available at these times and then they schedule schedule you for a time that you said you were not available for then for any event i mean it sort of seems like well i told you when it was Now, the thing is, like, if you signed up for something that avoided 2 p.m. on a Saturday and then they put you at 2 p.m. on a Saturday, you could say, I literally can't do that time. I have an appointment that's been on the books forever. Like, I can't do that. That's why we did the schedule.

01:09:21 - 01:09:23 | Speaker 2:

I have to go to a different show that has me in a larger font.

01:09:23 - 01:09:59 | Speaker 1:

Right. Like, I have a doctor's appointment. I have whatever like that. But if it's kind of like from 3 to 5 a.m. as you kind of posited, then it's kind of like, well, you don't really have an excuse other than you don't want to do something in the middle of the night. But I also wouldn't blame you for being a little butthurt about that. But I also sort of feel like, Luke, you're a man of a certain age at this point. Like, for an event like this, don't they have, like, younger people with more vitality who've been to the Issaquah Men's Clinic who can, like, be up at 3 a.m. to 5 a.m. with the vim and vigor of youth? Wait, I'm looking at the very bottom of the list. It's Mike Salk.

01:10:00 - 01:10:06 | Speaker 2:

So I guess maybe he can jump in there for me. Hold on. You're telling me that Brock Hewitt is not going to be emceeing this event?

01:10:07 - 01:10:10 | Speaker 3:

I don't know if it's really up his alley.

01:10:10 - 01:10:32 | Speaker 2:

He got scandalized the other day. I try not to listen to that show. Sorry, but I don't. But the other day I turned it on and I heard Mike Salk was playing the Nirvana version of Lake of Fire. And Brock was scandalized by it. Wait, you mean the Ring of Fire Johnny Cash song? No, I'm sorry. lake of fire um it's a meat puppet song that nirvana covered uh where do bad folks go when

01:10:32 - 01:10:46 | Speaker 3:

they die you know this song oh that's called lake of fire i don't think i ever knew the name i'm not trying to disagree but i don't think i ever knew that was the name of that song but isn't it yeah it's it is there any backing music there is right but it's mostly kirk cobain's voice

01:10:46 - 01:10:56 | Speaker 2:

being or is it the nirvana version is from mt of mtv unplugged so it's like acoustic and i'm pretty sure the meat puppets version is mostly unplugged too i could be wrong about that i can't

01:10:56 - 01:11:04 | Speaker 3:

remember no i totally know the song that you're talking about i'm tempted to try to sing it but i don't think anybody needs that but i know what you're talking about i love nirvana's version

01:11:04 - 01:11:39 | Speaker 2:

anyway that was just a little bit of it's i mean in a somewhat laughy way but brock heward is a very very christian man and he was just kind of like and when when uh mike was going down a list of his favorite things related to lakes which is like ah whatever he's like oh you always have lake of fire and so he played this song and brock was just like whoa i don't know i don't know about that i think it maybe ran into uh it ran into the um his christian faith in a way that was unexpected um anyway uh can i say can i say one last thing he's not on the poster i feel like

01:11:39 - 01:13:19 | Speaker 3:

if there's even one person listening who doesn't hate me right now i would like to convert them over to hating me part of my frustration with this is that i think i'm a better mc than many of the people on this list like mc-ing is a thing it's a skill going up on stage and keeping it together and keeping the room entertained and keeping the thing moving is literally the one thing i'm good at and they have like lance bangs lance bangs is a wonderful person i love him who's lance bangs he's a film director he shoots a lot of jackass he's married to Corinne Tucker from Slater-Kinney. He's like a guy in the scene and has made a bunch of really great films and documentaries and shoots all this cool stuff. This is not a guy who's going to hold the fucking stage. I'm looking at this list, and again, there are people that are performers on here and that are really good at it and maybe drag performers. Then there are just a bunch of people that I think are going to do a worse job of holding the room. And I guess that's not my problem to worry about. It's just my job to show up for the two hours that I'm – or whatever it is, hour I'm going to do it and do it. But I'm looking at this and I'm just thinking like what I feel like I see with this list is A, my massive insecurity and B, a certain amount of people who I think are going to be challenged to do the thing that they're being kind of brought on to do, which is to like dynamically engage with the crowd and keep it fun and flirty and moving. like that's a that's a thing and i see a bunch of people on the list who are really talented people at other things but not this they might be doing other things though like portugal the

01:13:19 - 01:13:25 | Speaker 2:

man is on here that's a band there's so obviously some are going to be like some so you know what

01:13:25 - 01:13:28 | Speaker 3:

like maybe that's a really good point i really had not thought of that yeah so they'll probably

01:13:28 - 01:13:49 | Speaker 2:

play obviously i think a lot of these performers i mean it sounds like peppermint is such a big name maybe they'll perform and do some emceeing i don't know but it could take various shapes like I totally see Busy Phillips being a great emcee, for example, and maybe Lance Bangs is going to like maybe create something and do a little thingy. I mean, you'll have to let us know.

01:13:49 - 01:14:28 | Speaker 3:

But that's a you know, that's a really good point. I think I let my own insecurity get in the way of the obvious point that you're making, which is not everyone on this list is necessarily standing up. They're holding a mic. They might be doing something else to support this and to kind of create the moment. And there's a lot of ways to do that. So you're totally right. Again, this is the place where I come, TBTL, I'm talking about TBTL now, to just air out the least likable parts of my personality. And when I saw this list, I kept looking, and I kept looking, and I kept looking, and I was just like, really, way down there? And then I hated myself for caring about it. But then I thought it would be good content, so here we are.

01:14:28 - 01:14:36 | Speaker 2:

Yeah, right. So let's get off of that approach to producing the show until after the TBTL-a-thon. Then you can become hateable again.

01:14:36 - 01:14:39 | Speaker 3:

Can you cut all this out? I'll just beep it.

01:15:00 - 01:18:00 | Speaker 1:

All right, Luke, let's do some blurs days here. We got Jenny checking in saying happy blurs day to Max from Brooklyn. We know Max. Max has done a lot of TBTL art for us. did the image of you and me as Scooby-Doo and Shaggy. And I believe I am Shaggy, and you're holding me, and I'm afraid. Are you familiar with this? I am very familiar with it. Happy Blurze to Max from Brooklyn, from Jenny. Max is currently in Alabama to play Cliff in Cabaret. How about that? Heck yeah. Max is also one of our many listeners who star in the TV show FBI, I believe. Exactly. Despite really trying to turn his 11 of a wife into a 10, he's a great partner who deserves to have a fantastic birthday, including a shout-out from his favorite podcast. Oh, no, from his favorite pocket friends. Ooh, I like that. Ooh, that's nice. Pocket friends. Happy birthday, Max. Happy Blur's Day to Terry from... You're making this up because you didn't get the email. Is it possible you sent it to yourself? There's a very real possibility, but this time it looks like I sent it to you. I'm going to keep going until maybe it shows up in your inbox. It's a lot to text. It's a pretty long Blur's Day today, but I'm up for the challenge. Let's do it. Text it to me. We got Terry. What if I had guessed right? That would have been amazing. No, this is from our pal Marissa in Maryland, who, by the way, texted me something yesterday that I thought might be worth mentioning on the show. I believe Marissa in Maryland wanted us to know that the word koozie for like a beer koozie is a brand name, not unlike Kleenex or Saran Wrap. Got it. So they took Cozy, which was the Midwest thing, and then added their spin to it and trademarked it. Maybe or maybe they invented it. And really, you would just call it like a, you know, like maybe you just call the generic term a can holder. I don't know. And everybody, I don't know more than that. But anyway, that's not what we're here to talk about. Marissa in Maryland says, I just celebrated my 39th Blur's Day. A lot of my life feels like it's in tumult right now. Sorry, Marissa. I'm three quarters done with my master's degree and pondering where my career goes from there. But I've got the love of my family, and that's what makes it all worthwhile. Shout out to the other June birthday tens, and let's get pumped for TBTL Independence Day. I'm going to turn on that voice whenever I want. Still didn't get it, huh, Luke? No. I blame my email for this, though, because it is not reliable of late. But again, I'm not kidding.

01:18:00 - 01:20:00 | Speaker 1:

Do you want to text it to me? No, I've got it. I sit with it. This is good for the listeners. The listeners always say, we want to hear more of Andrew stumbling over words he doesn't know how to read. You have not been stumbling. You've been nailing it. I was the one that had some real trubs during the Dazzling Donors. You have to take one club. Missy and Joe in Boston say, here's a Blur's Day shout out to our five, Rowan. He's already a big fan of the show. Regularly asking such important questions as, which one is Luke and which one is Andrew? Fair question. Andrew's the funny one. Rowan is turning the big. Andrew's the one who does not get invited to MC. I'm the, we're even on that poster. Rowan is turning the big five. But if you were, you would have the good sense to not be mad about your placement when it's supporting drag shows. Because I'd be higher than Peppermint. I'd insist upon it. Rowan is turning the big five. He's a smart, kind, silly kid, and we love him so much. Rowan, this is going out to you. Stinky! I feel like that would be in a five-year-old's wheelhouse. Christopher says, happy birthday to Colette. I'm so happy to get to spend your birthday weekend with you this year. Hope we get the chance to study Jared Kellnick's brain before the weekend is over. Okay, I'm listening. Okay, so it sounds like maybe going to a ball game or possibly going to some sort of a laboratory where Jared Kellnick's brain is in a jar? I'm not sure. I'm really tempted to send you something right now, Andrew, on the subject of the Seattle Mariners. Do you know Did you happen to watch the ninth inning Of the game yesterday or were you listening on the radio Listening on radio and probably Starting to get a little distracted by that point Oh wow well you were lucky for that Because you know what happened obviously I did hear the almost grand slam Get stolen I couldn't remember if that was in the eighth Or ninth though It was the bottom of the ninth We had challenged a call And won to load the bases And Eugenio Suarez

01:20:00 - 01:20:07 | Speaker 2:

hits a home run i mean it's well over the fence and the guy in the outfield i mean i believe they

01:20:00 - 01:20:29 | Speaker 1:

Thank you.

01:20:07 - 01:20:50 | Speaker 2:

pulled back they they had like four catches at the wall like up against the wall maybe another one of them was a home run this was to tie it i was videotaping myself in my house when this happened because i was so sure eugenio suarez was going to hit this home run And he did And I stood up And then I learned Like if you ever want to see Like you know what In Princess Bride Like when You know Wesley is being tortured And they hear it And they're like That is a man who had true love And lost it Or whatever they say I could send you this video It is a man who had true hope And lost it Like you can see it in real time The just absolute defenestration Of my dreams

01:20:50 - 01:21:03 | Speaker 1:

That center fielder And I don't know their name Whoever's playing center field They stole so much from us this series, right? Like, we ended up winning the first two games, but didn't – was it a centerfield shot? I think so, yes.

01:21:03 - 01:21:07 | Speaker 2:

And I think he hit a home run against us, right? Was it –

01:21:07 - 01:21:14 | Speaker 1:

Yeah, I don't – is it the same person? I'm not sure, and I can't remember the name. If it's not Arise or Chisholm, I don't know.

01:21:14 - 01:21:18 | Speaker 2:

It's not Arise, who's on your fantasy team. Anyway, by the way –

01:21:18 - 01:21:20 | Speaker 1:

How did you know that? Have you seen my roster?

01:21:20 - 01:21:30 | Speaker 2:

No, because when I said that I was proud that we beat the Marlins the other day, this is off air, you were like, oh, but actually the Marlins are pretty good because you have Arise on your team, and he's, like, killing it.

01:21:31 - 01:21:47 | Speaker 1:

And then the Mariners absolutely destroyed Arise. He went 0 for 8, right, in the series? No, no, no, more than that, or 0 for 10 or something. He had a tough series. Yeah, which was not good for me. I'm getting obliterated by our commissioner right now. What are we doing?

01:21:47 - 01:21:49 | Speaker 2:

Gurlitz! Happy Blur's Day.

01:21:49 - 01:22:16 | Speaker 1:

I still have not received the email, I apologize. Okay, that's all right. But happy Blur's Day to Colette. Colette is an Instagram friend of mine as well. I hope you guys have a great weekend taking in some Kelnick brain samples. Whatever that means. Happy Blur's Day to fellow 10 Annie in Seattle from Megan. Wait. Yep. The Annie that we work with, possibly? That's interesting. I'm supposed to see Annie on Sunday. I'll ask. Will you ask? Yeah, it could be.

01:22:16 - 01:22:29 | Speaker 2:

It's possible there are multiple people in Seattle with that name. Who listen to the TBTL? I feel like Annie is really on her, our colleague Annie is really on her game with TBTL stuff. It's often referencing something we said mere hours before.

01:22:30 - 01:22:54 | Speaker 1:

Huh. Well, I'll be interested to find out. It'll give us something to talk about over dinner. A happy Blur's Day to fellow 10 Annie in Seattle from Megan. I'm glad we've stayed friends since high school, even after I told the Army recruiters you could be interested in joining. As we said back then, my bad. I do stand by my answer to their question, though. Who is the strongest, most resilient person you know?

01:22:54 - 01:22:56 | Speaker 2:

Wow, that's a real compliment.

01:22:56 - 01:23:00 | Speaker 1:

It really, really is. But I'm also glad you were able to choose your own way.

01:23:00 - 01:23:05 | Speaker 2:

Did you get calls in high school from the recruiters? Did you get those socks, by the way?

01:23:06 - 01:24:07 | Speaker 1:

No, I definitely did not get any kind of recruiting socks. I don't think I got phone calls. I remember them being stationed around areas on campus when I was in college. You know, yeah, I was, you know, I was pretty deep into my kind of like hippie phase. I had no interest in anything military at all. In fact, I remember one of the few times in high school that my dad kind of hollered at me in like real like real kind of anger was when he saw like I had to fill something out to to officially. what do you call it like apply for the draft not apply for the register for the draft i guess is the term which is weird it's kind of like if everybody's got to do it why do i have to register you sent me the piece of paper you have my info anyway i remember it was sitting there i don't know he came into my room or something and had been sitting there for a long time and he's like don't forget to fill that out i think i said like i'm not filling that out are you kidding me and he was like you will fill that out my dad um you know of a generation where you respect the law of the

01:24:07 - 01:24:23 | Speaker 2:

land and of course that is part of your duty it's not civil service there's another term for that right is it not civil service i don't know maybe but but so um interesting so he was very like you know this is your this is your civic duty essentially your duty yeah yeah that's a good

01:24:23 - 01:24:42 | Speaker 1:

way of putting it yeah i mean i think he was selective service i think yes yes thank you you're right because civil would literally be the opposite of military but um anyway did you do did you do your uh put your number in i did and i think for a long time i was like kind of in the back of my mind like i i cannot like the military would destroy me i think it would honestly destroy

01:24:42 - 01:24:49 | Speaker 2:

me or make you remember those ads that used to run a long time ago it's like iron being like

01:24:49 - 01:27:44 | Speaker 1:

beaten down into like forge yes yes there were there were a lot of those so anyway i did fill it out i didn't get drafted every now and then i will think i'm just like well whatever's going on with this shameful body of mine. At least I never got drafted. I'm well beyond that now. So all of that is to say Happy Blur's Day, Annie. Possible colleague. Farron says, I hope everyone will join me in wishing Lisa a happy Blur's Day. Besides being my long-time friend, she's always got the good takes, input, and jokes on Slack, and it's fun that we have that as another way to stay connected after she moved across the country. This, of course, is Farron and Lisa. Lisa, we did an episode of TBTL during the TV telethon two years ago from Oceanside, California. Oceanside at SU High, huh? In the parking lot of her apartment building. Now living in Chicago, I believe. But anyway, Farron says, I'm confident Lisa will do something super fun to celebrate, but I hope it involves cocktails and desserts. I mean, my guess is it'll involve some kind of live music, right? And it's Lisa's jam. And Farron, just in case you would like to have your hair done with a beautiful view of the Pacific Ocean. I believe that Farron is in the business of doing that right now. That is absolutely right. A beautiful salon. Caroline says, I'm wishing... Nope. Andrew, would I be worried about this email not coming through? Because I'm looking at it on my computer and my phone, and it's not happening. I attached a lot of... Is it possible I didn't actually pay the bill on my cloud account? I attach a lot of Bitcoin to it, too. So let me see, what did I send it to? It usually comes through. Here, I sent it to this address. I'll read it out loud on the air. Please do. No, I sent it to the address I usually use. Golly, I'm sorry. I feel like I'm really letting you down. I sent it to BigBurbs69. Uh-huh. Yep. That's the one. At Google.sex. I don't know why you're not getting it. It's crazy. 68 people wanted to be BigBurbs, but I stayed with it. It took me days. BigBurbs52. BigBurbs53. Oh, my God. How are we? I told you this was a long one. Oh, my God. We're out of music already. Let's just get through the right way to rock part of this, then bring it back. All you had to do was text me. All you had to do was text me. No, no, no. This is the easy way or the hard way. Nope, they're doing it the hard way. I'm going to do a quick, we're going to dip into some super password here, then I'm going to get on with the blurs days. Caroline says, I'm writing to wish, I think it's Caroline, by the way, if there's an E on the end of it, it would be Caroline, right? Caro, L-I-N-E. That's how I would say it. Yeah, Caroline says, I'm writing to wish myself a happy blurs day. As I complete my sixth decade, I'm writing for myself, mostly because I was too lame to send in a dazzling donor message, so we got another dazzling donor on the show today. I want a chance to say thanks to Luke and Andrew and Jen all those years ago. I've had a lot of life changes this year, and the stability of my daily dose of TBTL,

01:27:45 - 01:30:12 | Speaker 1:

the familiar patter in my ears, and the loving and funny community online have been a big help as I chart my new course. Much love to all of you. thanks caroline happy blurs day thank you for being a generous supporter of tbtl and keeping this thing going hope that your next decade is as good uh christy and michael say a very happy blurs day wish to our wonderful friend amy r in seattle she's a loyal 10 with whom we have had the pleasure of attending the 1000th and 2000th anniversary shows you know what would really go well with that both at the neptune and had an amazing time what would go well with a thousandth episode which is happening july 29th andrew where would that be luke also interestingly enough at the neptune interesting thank you for your friendship through the years and for your dedication okay but now i thought you were talking to me i was i was i was i was i was but now i'm going to go back to the message from christy and michael to amy that says thank you for your friendship through the years and for your dedication to educating the youth in Seattle. Oh, nice. But I'd also like to say that to you, Luke. Thank you for your dedication. I'm, you know, doing what I can to educate the youth. Can I just mention that Babes in Toilet Land is an amazing show title you did yesterday? That was yesterday's show title. Really good. Very solid work, my friend. And finally, Jake in Chicago, our pal Jake says, I hope I'm not too late. This just came in today. I wanted to wish my 11, Ariel, a happy 32nd blurs day i love you so much no this is me talking to you now luke i love you so much and i'm so glad that we got a puppy together wait no no this is jake's message ariel happy 32nd blurs day i love you so much and i'm so glad we got a puppy together i can't wait to marry you next year and happy juneteenth to everyone hey congratulations to jake and ariel congrats mazel tov maybe we'll you know I'm you know I think I'm still authorized to do weddings so if you want to do it at the 4000th episode let me know if you want to move it up yeah but we're going to have to talk about actually I already did I already I already did a wedding once when we did a live show I also did one other wedding that did not and that one was great they were madly in love right up until the end I did another wedding that really went south and I blame myself because I was in fact sitting in a Starbucks in Anacortes googling wedding speeches about an hour

01:30:12 - 01:30:23 | Speaker 2:

before I was the wedding went south or the the marriage marriage went south the wedding went north really oh great yeah so that's good so you did yeah the wedding was a wonderful event where and

01:30:23 - 01:30:32 | Speaker 1:

I met Carrie Beth, who I would later become married to. So for me, big win. For the people whose ceremony I was performing, big loss.

01:30:33 - 01:30:35 | Speaker 2:

Interesting. I don't think I know those people,

01:30:35 - 01:30:41 | Speaker 1:

do I? I feel like I'm no, I don't think you do, but I feel like I'm arguing out of both sides of my mouth for Jake and his

01:30:41 - 01:30:50 | Speaker 2:

wonderful fiancé. Did you notice I'm just giving you some space around that? Bubbles is sending a fax, by the way, to four minutes ago telling me don't do that.

01:30:50 - 01:30:58 | Speaker 1:

Previous me has just learned That I should probably not get into that Congratulations y'all

01:30:58 - 01:31:04 | Speaker 2:

Yeah definitely And happy Blur's Day to everybody Well not everybody, everybody who's celebrating a Blur's Day

01:31:04 - 01:31:17 | Speaker 1:

That's right And as this cat jumps on my back And sinks her claws deep into my fleshy haunches I'm reminded of the time yesterday Where I thought she was dead And we can talk about that on tomorrow's show

01:31:17 - 01:31:19 | Speaker 2:

Yeah that sounds scary My big question for her

01:31:19 - 01:31:23 | Speaker 1:

I'm probably overselling it, but it did freak me out.

01:31:23 - 01:31:26 | Speaker 2:

I will give you some heads up on this. I have no idea.

01:31:26 - 01:31:41 | Speaker 1:

Do you hear her standing on the fax machine, by the way? No, she's not doing it. No, I don't hear it. She's like four times. Bubbles? Consider not doing that. Does Bingo do that on your little printer fax?

01:31:41 - 01:32:08 | Speaker 2:

Yeah, he used to hang out there a lot. It hit a lot of buttons. He's got a little bit bigger. He doesn't hang out there quite as much, which is good for me. His thing now, though, is his favorite place in the world is right above my shoulders here. If you can picture, and I know you know it, Luke, but if you can picture kind of a basement studio, wood paneled, of course, because I only have the nicest things in life, including the outline of the words namaste where somebody once glued it to the wood.

01:32:08 - 01:32:23 | Speaker 1:

wood panel i want to clarify for the listeners it's not just that wood paneling kind of you know sort of like pressed in pretend wood paneling that's tongue and groove my friend yeah no it's recently paid many thousands of dollars to have my whole ceiling done in tongue and groove that's

01:32:23 - 01:32:46 | Speaker 2:

a nice room one of these days i really do need to finish this though like because like there's places where you know renters hung things they're like i need to like kind of give this a light sanding i think and do a nice little finish on it it would go a really long way but i have so many other things i need to prioritize before that luke it just exhausts me to think about it fantasy baseball building that pickleball court i am getting okay listen it sounds like your

01:32:46 - 01:32:51 | Speaker 1:

sounds like your hedges though or hedges are in good shape do you know that are turned out i

01:32:51 - 01:33:52 | Speaker 2:

actually had the thought yesterday as i was like realizing like okay i need to spend the rest of my day dealing with these toilet issues in this case toilet issues being something different than what toilet issues usually mean for me which are digestive issues but i was like i am just glad that i got my hedges done before this happened because i'm so again i use this term i don't mean to use it disrespectfully i'm not diagnosed but i have very strong ocd tendencies right and so when my hedges which is a multiple day project of trimming them down to size those days where they're sort of half trimmed and half not really kind of drive me bananas sure i really don't like that feeling and so i was very excited to finish up that work i guess on it was monday of this week Right. But if Monday had been rainy or something and then yesterday was the first nice day, but I couldn't go outside to finish the hedges because instead I had to deal with a slightly more pressing issue of a leaky bathroom toilet, then I would have been like really upset. Like I was I was like, well, just be glad you got the hedges done before you had to dip into this project.

01:33:53 - 01:34:02 | Speaker 1:

Yes, I'm excited to see them. I'm going to try to make it up for the the big party that's happening. Oh, if only to admire the hedges.

01:34:02 - 01:34:11 | Speaker 2:

Oh, nice. Yeah, I wasn't sure if you were making that. I asked Genevieve to kind of slow walk your invite, but no. Yeah. No, she ignored your request.

01:34:12 - 01:34:43 | Speaker 1:

She fast-tracked. She rocket-docketed it. She mall-walked it. Anyway, so yeah, I look forward to seeing those hedges. Again, I've told you many times, I feel very attached to your beautiful home with Genevieve because I think maybe it was Genevieve. Maybe you said it to me. somebody sent it to me the day that you guys were going to look at it and you were saying this is out of our range and this is like we're not going to get this one we've already kind of lost out a few bidding wars and I was just like pay whatever you have to for these hedges

01:34:43 - 01:34:48 | Speaker 2:

these are beautiful hedges they are the killer app of the home they really are awesome for sure

01:34:48 - 01:34:56 | Speaker 1:

alright that's going to do it once again I'm zero help on the blurs days but that's how I like it

01:34:56 - 01:34:57 | Speaker 2:

I think it went okay

01:34:57 - 01:36:25 | Speaker 1:

I went in no you did actually really well I think I did and there was You There was some room for, you know, conversation around the Blur's Days. Yeah. Kind of a groove. But I'm also, I'm really worried about this situation with my email because I have not received an email since 11.56 a.m. And as we're sitting here, it's 12. My clock is 12.33. Oh, yeah. You have an issue. Yeah. I think I got an issue. So, anyway. Thanks for listening. Genevieve sent you the invite today. If you make one more joke about that, I'm going to think you really don't want me there. You're going to be here, but your name's going to be very small on the invite list. I swear to God, if I'm below Cameron Esposito, I'm going to shit a brick. Can we get her back on the show, by the way? Yeah, you know what? She's a pal. We absolutely could. But I am going to bring up the fact that she's way above me on the drag show. Yes, of course. That should be the reason to have her on. All right. Thanks for listening, everybody. We'll be back here tomorrow with more Imaginary Radio for you. Until then, have a great Thursday. Stay safe. And please remember, no mountain too tall. And good luck to all. and my name should be Well, what are you? I'm a chicken lady Can I get you a beer? Would you like to just drink out of the toilet? A beer Power out
