What is this? Oh, that's a little embarrassing. That's my grandfather's sweater. He's dead, and this is the last thing of his I have. Sometimes I sleep in it, you know, it just reminds me of him. Would you put it on? Sure. Were you, like, close with him? He was, like, my best friend, you know? We did tons of stuff together. He taught me how to fish, skip stones, whittle. Did you, like, cry when he died? Can I be honest with you? Please. I cried so hard I thought I didn't have any more tears left in me. Oh my god. He was like my best friend, you know? And my worst enemy. Totally. TBTL!

00:00:45 - 00:00:59 | Speaker 3:

Hey there, hello and welcome to a Tuesday edition of the TBTL Summer Games. I'm Luke Burbank right over there. My dear friend and trusted colleague and co-owner of Too Beautiful to Bid, Mr. Andrew Walsh.

00:00:59 - 00:01:02 | Speaker 2:

Finally putting some respect on that name.

00:01:02 - 00:01:03 | Speaker 3:

Where's that intro tape from?

00:01:04 - 00:01:28 | Speaker 2:

That was making me giggle so hard. I'm glad you asked. That's from Broad City. I pulled that forever ago. I don't know if I've ever used it or not. I thought maybe it's too dark. But when he just suddenly says, worst enemy, and then. Such a throwaway. I love it. He says totally. It's just absolutely. I don't know if that works without the totally. But, man, that show destroyed me. That was a great, great show.

00:01:28 - 00:02:16 | Speaker 3:

I need to actually invest the time Every time I watched an episode of Broad City I was dying and then I didn't just like I didn't TiVo it, Andrew I didn't like, you know, I didn't make it a weekly occurrence. I just saw a clip online somewhere of Broad City where Susie Essman, you know, from Curb. Yeah, yeah, okay, yeah I think she plays the mother of one of the characters and they're in a nail salon, the three of them, so the two main characters in the show and then Susie Essman and it is so funny, the way the interactions between the mother and daughter. Sorry, I'm not great on everybody's name on that show. Even though I've had one of those folks on Livewire. And she was great. She wrote a great book, Road Tripping Across America. And it's all...

00:02:16 - 00:02:18 | Speaker 2:

Alana Glazer. That was who you had on, right?

00:02:18 - 00:02:34 | Speaker 3:

No. Abby Jacobson? Abby Jacobson, exactly. Like I kept saying, and you cut it out. I know. I went to listen to who I said Abby Jacobson's name four times, and Andrew's taken it all out to make me look foolish. Also, yeah, Alana Glazer is her character. I think Susie Essman is her mom.

00:02:34 - 00:02:35 | Speaker 2:

Oh, okay.

00:02:35 - 00:02:48 | Speaker 3:

And they're in the nail salon, and Susie Essman and Alana Glazer are just, like, roasting Abby Jacobson in this really funny way. It's just, all I'm trying to say is I agree. It's a good show.

00:02:49 - 00:03:01 | Speaker 2:

What is driving me bananas aside from the siren that I'm sure that you can even hear over the music? outside my window, is the fella's voice in that tape also sounds very familiar to me.

00:03:01 - 00:03:03 | Speaker 3:

Yeah, almost like T.J. Miller or something.

00:03:03 - 00:03:14 | Speaker 2:

Yes, it does sound a little like T.J. Miller, but I don't think he was in that show. So anyway, that was driving me a little bit bananas. I could try to suss that out on the fly, but I ruined yesterday's show by doing that kind of stuff.

00:03:14 - 00:03:44 | Speaker 3:

You did not ruin yesterday's show. What you did was gave us an opportunity to savor Lauren's game. Instead of just wolfing it down, Like I tend to do with both food and other things, like just kind of like consume it very quickly and then think like, I can't believe I ate that whole thing. Instead, we're savoring this quiz where we are reading back our own quotes where we were trying to describe a movie and we're doing so in a very confusing way. And now we're trying to figure out what we were talking about.

00:03:44 - 00:04:59 | Speaker 2:

Yes. Now, I did promise at the end of yesterday's show that I wanted to tell you a story about something that happened to me that I consider to be very coincidental just this weekend. Now, I mentioned, I think on Friday's show, although I'm not sure about that. It might have been earlier in the week last week. I just almost randomly said, hey, Luke, there's been something that's been bugging me for quite some time now. And that is, I know that a listener of the show lives very near me in this neighborhood, and I have taken out a cease and desist order. No, I said I ran into this listener and her family very briefly about a year ago as Genevieve and I were hustling to catch a bus so we could go watch a Seahawks game with some friends somewhere. And we ran into this family, and she said, hey, I'm a listener. And I said, oh, that's great. I'm sure we'll see more of you. and then a year has gone by almost and I have not seen that person since and so I gave an awkward shout out on this show last week and said hey, if you're the person who I ran into, if you're still listening to this show and you still live in my neighborhood, please get a hold of me. I would love to be in touch, generally speaking. Could have invited her to Genevieve's party and what have you.

00:05:00 - 00:05:21 | Speaker 1:

Well, we pre-taped this. The listener hasn't even heard that yet. Yet this weekend I'm out working in my yard and guess who walks by but Kim. Oprah. I sure do like beans. Wait, what? Wait, what? What is?

00:05:22 - 00:05:36 | Speaker 2:

I know exactly what that was. I know exactly what that was. That's Clifford Woolsey from Waiting for Guffman as passed through the lens of Sling Bay or Sling Bay, which would be a decent TikTok name, Sling Bay.

00:05:36 - 00:05:47 | Speaker 1:

Ooh, not bad. Yeah, absolutely. It's not my worst work. Anyway, so I don't even, I don't remember this. If I said last week on the show that I think the listener's name might even be Kim, I felt like, I did feel like that name.

00:05:47 - 00:05:50 | Speaker 2:

Yeah, because I think I made a lame Kim Possible joke.

00:05:50 - 00:07:16 | Speaker 1:

Really? So if I did say that, all the more glory and power to me then, Luke. But I was very psyched to coincidentally run into Kim. Here was something funny, and Kim, I hope it's okay. And we have exchanged contact information now. We are in touch. Everything is stable in our neighborhood relationships. But I did think that this was kind of memorable, and Kim, I hope it's okay to tell this part of the story. I was outside working in the yard, but kind of out in the street trimming my hedges. and um somebody walks by and it's a neighbor and we i i was meeting a lot of neighbors that day because i was working on my hedges and so i give a wave but i can tell that this person wants to talk to me and i'm also like oh wait could this be the neighbor i was just thinking about and um she came up to me she said hey i'm listening she said i'm so sorry to bother you but i'm listening to you in my earbuds right now and i'm like oh my god and i'm like oh my gosh you're the neighbor that i she's like no you don't know me you don't know me and i'm like you don't know and i'm like oh I don't I haven't met you and she's like no I'm Kim I'm like wait I didn't meet you and your your family like a year ago I was just talking about this on the show she's like oh yeah no that was me you weren't supposed to remember that I was being super awkward and I was super embarrassed and I just thought that you would never have remembered it and I was like no of course I remember it you were so awkward how could I have forgotten no I'm just joking she was not awkward at all it's so funny how everybody always thinks they're the most awkward person in any conversation Maybe not everybody does that

00:07:16 - 00:07:17 | Speaker 2:

Well certainly the kind of people who are attracted to this program

00:07:17 - 00:07:19 | Speaker 1:

Yes exactly that's not true of everybody

00:07:19 - 00:07:28 | Speaker 2:

I don't think the Joe Rogan podcast listeners Are often lying in bed trying to name Movies alphabetically To keep the thoughts away

00:07:28 - 00:07:38 | Speaker 1:

You don't think so I don't know But anyway I thought that was a wonderful coincidence And I'm really also just personally very psyched To have officially met Kim again

00:07:38 - 00:08:50 | Speaker 2:

I'm so glad that you were able to kind of Not just close the loop on that But you know sort of make sure that you and kim were were all good and then now you know extend the friendship i wanted to say something quickly sort of related to that or on i would say tangential to that which is if you have put a follow request on instagram to me and been kind of shocked that i didn't say yes or that i even like dismissed like deleted it or something the button for confirm like hey so-and-so wants to follow you confirm it's right next to the one that is delete and i have probably over the last six months i probably hit delete on like maybe 10 or 20 instagram friend requests like just accidentally so there are like 10 or 20 people very likely tens who are like man what's going on like that's kind of that's kind of harsh move um this is a guy's trying to build his instagram brand and then he's like so if you tried to follow me or whatever it is they call it on instagram if you tried to gram me and then you were like wow that was that was mean he said no i probably didn't i probably hit the wrong button so why do you have that turned on i don't understand

00:08:50 - 00:08:55 | Speaker 1:

why you're making people request to follow i don't i thought that was more standard is that

00:08:55 - 00:09:08 | Speaker 2:

not is that not the i thought that that was how most people had their thing set up is that you you have to ask if you can follow them is that not i don't know i don't know i mean i don't i don't know i mean there are not quite as big a deal as i am andrew what's that no i do well that's

00:09:08 - 00:09:33 | Speaker 1:

true like i just think that that is an extra step i mean i think people who have kids or or whatever just don't want creepers following them yeah they can turn that on but like i uh for for us we're so public possible what's that yeah but i'm just saying that like but you you basically is there anybody that you wouldn't accept if there's nobody that you wouldn't accept just like just turn that thing off and save yourself a lot of headaches i think what it was was um i was worried about

00:09:33 - 00:10:24 | Speaker 2:

spam bots which i mean this is like this is one this is just like one i'm i'm one step away from just like clipping articles out of parade magazine and mailing them to addy like that's how old i'm sounding right now like aren't the isn't the instagram spam bot gonna steal my identity andrew like like i do you know i do because now that well not because now i mean it's been this way for i think most of the time i've been on instagram i Thank you. see the the request and some of them are like very obviously some scam bot thing you know it's some like 22 year old barely clothed woman saying like i want a true heart for love you know i'm like well this is probably not a tbtl listener or this is so when those come through if that person if that bot or that entity or whatever if that scam didn't have to ask me permission can't they wreak havoc

00:10:24 - 00:10:57 | Speaker 1:

somehow in my uh in my system i mean i think the point is they want to wreak havoc in your system um i uh what a weird gross dirty joke that doesn't really line up with anything in reality um i maybe i mean i get a bunch it's not it's not happening to you is the point i mean i will get those kinds of follows every now and then like so and so is following you and it's clearly like some sort of a spam bot and it's like some sort of like sexy lady with like two posts or whatever and so i always follow them back and give them a lot of information no i um

00:10:57 - 00:11:05 | Speaker 2:

i don't really do anything about it or it doesn't it doesn't lead to anything annoying happening where you're getting like a bunch of weird spammy comments no i don't you know you get one every

00:11:05 - 00:13:39 | Speaker 1:

now and then having said that we know people who are friends that we're friends with in our listening audience who've gotten hacked you know so i don't know how those people got hacked maybe i should be more careful maybe i'm doing the opposite of a psa here but yeah i'm just really surprised that you of all people have that have that um where the s doesn't move yeah if you invert that anyway yeah so i would do that actually you know what i'm thinking though i just want to tell you one other thing or a couple of other things regarding neighbors i met i'm almost like sort of just realizing this now i met i had so many interesting interactions with neighbors this weekend including in near the end of the day genevieve and i i guess this is on sunday we're outside and uh with a friend talking about some yard waste and how we're going to deal with it and um a car drove up and slowed down and a guy i'm going to put him at least 10 years younger than me uh with a passenger about the same age uh rolls up and wants to say something to us we're like oh hey what's up and he rolls down his window and he's like hey i used to live here i'm like oh my god and he said i'm like oh well what's your name he says his name i'm like yeah I've been I still get your mail sometimes I don't think it's important or not but it was such an interesting thing and he's I'm like are you do you still live in the neighborhood he's like no no I moved back to Asia uh but I just come back here about like once a year and I think the people who used to own this house I think he was a renter but I think the people who used to own this house maybe lived in Asia as well I'm not exactly sure like I there's an old message board in the neighborhood that I would go back to sometimes and read and try to suss out the history of this property. But yeah, it was just kind of interesting. I met a bunch of my neighbors kind of across the alleyway because I was doing a project out there. But I thought it was especially interesting that like at the end of the weekend, when the last neighbors I met was somebody who used to live in this house, I traded email information with him as well. The reason I'm thinking of it is because I gave him my phone and I said, oh, here, we should have each other's email. And so instead of asking him for his email, I just handed him my phone and said, here, fill it out and I'll send you an email but i made the subject line i'm not i'm not going to use his full name here or i'm going to change his name um let's say his name was jim smith i wrote jim smith contact information and then i sent it to him realizing later that night that he got an email with his own name sent to him when really it should have been andrew walsh contact information i guess that part i could have left out of the story it's not the world according to garp anyway um yes that is do you want to get back into the quiz here is that what i know no i was just saying that's you

00:13:39 - 00:13:51 | Speaker 2:

at night. That was a complicated and not very effective joke. The joke being that it would keep you up to realize you had sent him kind of like the wrong subject line and therefore you had to go and get back to your movie list.

00:13:51 - 00:13:53 | Speaker 1:

Get back to my movie list. I didn't understand.

00:13:53 - 00:13:58 | Speaker 2:

I know, sorry. That joke was really really way complicated. Well, I also

00:13:58 - 00:14:57 | Speaker 1:

feel like my follow-up story there was super not interesting. So can we get back to the quiz? Are you cool with getting back to Lauren's quiz? I'm so cool with it. Would it be good if we had some appropriate music to go along with it kind of music would you play for a quiz about us oh good that work okay good perfect how about this this is oh yes we have to reset this up for for new listeners Lauren sent in this quiz and Lauren took a bunch of quotes of me and Luke describing movies throughout the years and is giving us our own quotes back to us and we got to figure out if we can tell what movie we were trying to describe this next quote comes from me Again, real efficiency of language here. This movie quote is, it's about a kid that stands on the roof. Okay, I think I can get there. It's about a kid who stands on the roof because this is the only thing I know about this movie. Okay. Do you know what movie I'm talking about?

00:14:57 - 00:15:18 | Speaker 2:

I have no idea. A kid who stands on the roof. No. I'm not looking at the hint here, but I know I can't think of the name of the movie. So we'll have to figure this out together. But it's a horror movie from like the 1970s. And it's a kid who does something. He stands on the roof. But then I think does something very tragic in front of the entire town, like jumps from the roof. Whoa. I don't remember.

00:15:18 - 00:15:22 | Speaker 1:

I don't remember this movie. I don't remember this conversation. I don't remember any of this.

00:15:22 - 00:15:41 | Speaker 2:

It's like one of those movies that is specifically not just a horror movie, but about like the devil. But it's not poltergeist. It's not like it's, you know, like Poltergeist has like the Catholic priest or whatever. But I do feel like this is a true like Satanic story. Oh, what did I just say? Oh, no, I meant the exorcist. Sorry.

00:15:42 - 00:15:44 | Speaker 1:

But this isn't the exorcist. The kid on the roof is not the exorcist.

00:15:45 - 00:16:28 | Speaker 2:

No, but it's a movie that like it's a horror movie that deals specifically with like the devil or the devil. Uh-huh. Sure. The fruits of evil. It's so I married an ex-murderer, which is what those quotes go for. The pentavrit. Okay. Also in the genre, this is the, I knew this part. This is also the hint from Lauren. This is also in the genre movies Luke was too afraid to see when he was a kid. It wasn't on that list. It's like, it's a one word. It's a one word. Omen? Is it the omen? Yes, Luke. I think it is. Good Lord. You got there. Yes. The omen. That'll also come in handy in my trying to fall asleep name in movies game. Oh, yeah. O's. Handled. I'll never make it to the O's.

00:16:28 - 00:16:35 | Speaker 1:

But you got there. Good job. Thank you. You also have the world according to Garp, Andrew. I just gave you W.

00:16:35 - 00:16:37 | Speaker 2:

You don't get the game.

00:16:37 - 00:16:38 | Speaker 1:

It's two.

00:16:38 - 00:16:46 | Speaker 2:

You don't get the game. It's two words, the and another word. The. Oh, it can only be two words. Two words and the first word is always the. You're right.

00:16:46 - 00:16:47 | Speaker 1:

I don't get the game.

00:16:47 - 00:17:04 | Speaker 2:

I thought it was. The apartment, the burbs, the cooler. I thought it was the and then the next letter just had to be alphabetical and it could be anything. So it's basically like one word with the the in front of it. the watchman is the watcher a movie is the watcher no i think that was that well it was a netflix

00:17:04 - 00:17:15 | Speaker 1:

movie starring um bobby cannavale and naomi watts where they like which was kind of loosely based on a real thing i i must have talked about this probably during the pandemic because i got kind

00:17:15 - 00:17:21 | Speaker 2:

of into this show the we talked about the we talked about this house before it was even turned

00:17:21 - 00:17:31 | Speaker 1:

into a movie right yes we did we did it made it the watcher i think it might have been called or something and it was you know it was i i found it i watched all whatever seven episodes of it so

00:17:31 - 00:17:34 | Speaker 2:

obviously i guess i found it kind of entertaining but they played fast and loose with the facts

00:17:34 - 00:18:01 | Speaker 1:

that we think that was part of it and it just you know it just kind of deteriorated by the end um because i think what it was was yeah i mean there was like a scene where these weirdo neighbors are like murdered and then they're actually not murdered they've just been hiding in florida and their son said they were murdered and had like stolen bodies from the morgue and none of that i think was in the original incident in new jersey the original incident was

00:18:01 - 00:18:11 | Speaker 2:

the family was just getting like ominous notes from somebody who claimed to used to have lived there right and was like oh by the way that brings it back to uh your old the person used to live in

00:18:11 - 00:19:02 | Speaker 1:

your building showing did he describe himself as the watcher he said i've always been here i don't know why is that the scariest thing when someone's like you know it's it's like the um when a stranger calls like why haven't you checked on the children like what is it about that you gave me the you said that i mean that's that to me even like even um as scary as the the shining is or psychologically unsettling as the shining is and still is to this day when i watch it i mean a brilliant piece of filmmaking i think that when a stranger calls maybe just the age i was that that's got to be up there the call is coming from inside the house when she realizes that that the calls that she's been getting when she's babysitting are coming from inside the house and the foot is coming down the stairs i mean that's pure terror when you're 16 years old you

00:19:02 - 00:19:06 | Speaker 2:

just mean that general trope right well that device right i guess that was the first time

00:19:06 - 00:19:12 | Speaker 1:

i'd seen it deployed i mean i think that might have been kind of that's the wait wait i'm lost

00:19:12 - 00:19:21 | Speaker 2:

the thread what movie is where you first saw it deployed when a stranger calls oh i didn't know that you were saying the name of a movie okay gotcha yeah i've never yeah so that's like a

00:19:21 - 00:19:27 | Speaker 1:

1970s movie oh have you seen that have you seen i think that in the sentence i thought you meant

00:19:27 - 00:19:32 | Speaker 2:

like it's scary when a stranger calls right like i did not know that you uses that device okay yeah

00:19:32 - 00:21:06 | Speaker 1:

yeah but in the movie when a stranger calls what happens is a young woman is babysitting and um and she starts getting you know of course back in the day of landlines also what helps is that the film stock is just like that kind of like they couldn't they just didn't light it enough yeah probably was too impossible like the budget didn't allow for proper lighting so just like extra creepy and grainy and she's getting and the parents are like hey the kids are already asleep upstairs um so uh just hang out watch tv and we'll be back after our party and she starts getting calls and the first call it's it's just you know ring ring she picks up the phone and the voice just goes why haven't you checked the children oh stop it she's looking out the window and she's pulling she's pulling the shades and she's like and then she hangs the phone up and and then she keeps getting these calls why haven't you checked on the children so she finally calls the police because she's getting really freaked out somebody is spying on her and um and and she's pulled every shade and shutter and like she's how is this guy still seeing me and uh she finally the police traced the call and they call and they're going get out get out the call is coming from inside the house and this is as you see like his first foot coming down the upstairs because he had been in the house and had uh unfortunately uh let's just say uh the kids upstairs were no longer alive and he's coming for her and she's trying to open the door and it's got that like chain if i remember right it's like either one of the chain deals or like it's too locked you know i mean she's like furiously trying to open it as this guy is walking down towards her and that really that was as you can tell that was a

00:21:06 - 00:21:44 | Speaker 2:

very um that really made an impact on me yeah i mean well that that trope the call is coming from inside the house i'd always heard of that and it's always been a scary idea but i don't i mean except for the fact that i think we've had this exact conversation before and i just forgot about it why haven't you checked on the podcast why haven't you checked on the archives um so anyway now that you say that that rings a bell but I've never seen that movie but I am not joking when I say I am wearing shorts and a short sleeve shirt right now and as you were doing that voice and describing that like hair was on its end I'm not joking I was getting like that chilly feeling I was very cold in here as you did that voice so please do it again I will

00:21:44 - 00:22:05 | Speaker 1:

I will spare the listeners I will say this one thing they remade that movie so if you go back if you want to watch it's I believe it's called When a Stranger Calls make sure you're watching the original, like, 1970s or 80s version. There was one made, I think, in the mid-2000s, and it might be a good film as well, but that's not the one that I'm describing here. And make sure that somebody else is with you

00:22:05 - 00:22:07 | Speaker 2:

when you're watching it. You shouldn't be watching this stuff alone.

00:22:07 - 00:22:09 | Speaker 1:

And also check all of the rooms in the house

00:22:09 - 00:22:20 | Speaker 2:

before you put the movie on. So scary. Okay, here is another quote from you describing a movie, and I know this movie. What if it was?

00:22:20 - 00:22:22 | Speaker 1:

It's that thing of when the call is coming from the side.

00:22:22 - 00:22:54 | Speaker 2:

I'll bet you that'll be on here. I'll bet you that'll be on here. but let's start with this. Oh, yeah, I know the name of this one now. I just started watching this the other night and then didn't make all the way through, but I need to restart it. Joaquin Phoenix plays this kind of lost soul. This is a quote by you, Luke. Joaquin Phoenix plays this sort of lost soul who's looking to find some meaning in his life, and he bumps into and becomes part of this kind of stand-in for Scientology that's led by Philip Seymour Hoffman, who's kind of playing an Elrod Hubbard type, and that's the movie. I think it's Elrod, right? Elrod.

00:22:54 - 00:23:04 | Speaker 1:

Yes, yes. This is, I mean, between Joaquin and Philip Seymour Hoffman, we're narrowing it down pretty quickly there. I believe, do we want to do the hint for fun?

00:23:05 - 00:23:19 | Speaker 2:

Sure, yeah, I think I definitely know what it is, too. But the hint is fun. This is another quote from you. Like most of P.T. Anderson's films, I don't really know why people are doing what they're doing, but I'm just enjoying watching them work. That's you describing this movie.

00:23:19 - 00:23:20 | Speaker 1:

I stand by that

00:23:20 - 00:24:48 | Speaker 2:

The movie is The Master The Master, exactly A movie that Genevieve's been telling me to watch for years You haven't seen it? No, and you know when I sat I said I started this the other day, but I'm exaggerating You know when I started it was the night After our TBTL-a-thon When I was sick, and I kind of didn't realize What I was sick with, but I kind of had a fever And stuff, and I was like, you know what I'm going to do Instead of laying in this bed I'm going to do what I would do when I was a kid And if I was sick, like, I'm going to just go downstairs and watch a movie and again it comes back yeah get some saltines yes and I went downstairs and again we kind of keep referring back to this like I just kept clicking I'm like I want a good movie to watch when I'm sick I don't know what it is I just know it when I'll I'll know it when I see it and I just could not land on anything that seemed like the right thing I'm like well I've been meaning to watch the the master for a long time so I'll put this on And the opening is kind of just immediately so upsetting That I was in a bad mental place I was just in a bad physical place And so thus also a mental place That it kind of just made me feel worse And I just stopped it after 15 minutes And went back up to bed Like he's in the military He's doing weird things on the beach I mean it seems like my kind of movie I'm sure I'll love it when I sit down to it But then he's being kind of interrogated By some sort of a military psychologist But it's all very, very uncomfortable and I was like I need to stop watching this now this is not making me feel better on my sick night there's nothing

00:24:48 - 00:25:00 | Speaker 1:

nobody delivers an uncomfortable vibe like Joaquin Phoenix when he wants to exactly except for the Joker the Joker is really sweet but aside well other than that that's a rom-com that's the sequel to one

00:25:00 - 00:26:38 | Speaker 2:

fine day by the way a couple of other quick things if i can carol kane andrew carol kane plays the teenage babysitter in when a stranger calls in no shit yeah it's carol kane how but she was never a teenager luke that's right she was born miracle max's wife i don't understand i'm not a witch i'm your wife um and then the other thing because i think what people love about the summer games is when i continually take us off course so that we don't get through the quizzes very quickly but um i have been watching a lot of clips of of of wheels ontario and other things in the kroll universe and i don't know if you i don't know if you ever got to the part of that show where they do some kind of it's four o'clock it's four o'clock on a sunday toronto Show us your song No I don't think so It's a spin off It's so complicated and that's why this is going to derail the show But basically what it is is Nick Kroll's character from Wheels Ontario And then John Daly Also is a character on Wheels Ontario But this is like an American Idol style Talent show that they just happen to be It'd be as if you got you know somebody Who's the star of a show on NBC To also be one of the judges on like a talent show And then there's a um then there's like a celebrity contortionist and her name is like she has the frenchest name of all time because it's like french sort of a french canadian reference and it's called like it's like show us your song canada and but it's like first of all it always starts with it's 4 p.m on a sunday toronto show us your song which i don't know why that just kills me that

00:26:38 - 00:26:44 | Speaker 1:

specific time of day and also like and also show us your song is so i think it's show us your song

00:26:44 - 00:27:34 | Speaker 2:

and john and there's this simmering beef between john daly's character because he's the only person he's the only cast member who's been on wheels ontario for like the show's entire existence and he sees nick kroll's character whose name is brian as kind of this like his character brian when he's judging show us your song toronto he he's got kind of like um he's got like boy band hair and like one of those kind of like trucker hats and he's being real like he's just being like a teen idol and he's always talking about all of his fans and he calls them bryantologists i can't stop laughing about the fact that his fans are called bryantologists i was wondering where all of this was going it's related to the master andrew i i think that might be one of the best jokes i've ever heard it's all my bryantologists out there and it's just like a

00:27:34 - 00:28:35 | Speaker 1:

throwaway it's so funny to me very much i can't remember it specifically which is a real bummer because that's why it was funny but that does remind me you made a funny joke once luke oh yeah Um, you know how 30 Rock has that made up, um, kids competition show called America's kids got singing one time, which I just, I think about, I call all, all of those shows that like, you know, Genevieve is one of those America's kids got singing, but you offhandedly years ago throughout one of your versions of that, like you were like talking quickly, I believe you're talking about like all the ads that you see during Sunday football leading up to like whatever the big sunday uh performance competition is and you said something like i can't i can't see you singing or something because wasn't there something because you get like i can smell you singing something because there was one going on for a while it's like they're they're also messing up the senses in a strange way right because i think it started with

00:28:35 - 00:28:52 | Speaker 2:

like the masked singer right which is like we don't know who's in there singing and then it just like it started it started getting like they were like well this is working the idea that we can't see the person singing so like what if we couldn't hear the person right yes i just kept taking it to these other weird levels with different spin-offs i can't see the words that you're

00:28:52 - 00:28:56 | Speaker 1:

singing i don't know what it is uh anyway you did make a funny joke once i just can't remember

00:28:56 - 00:29:57 | Speaker 2:

that does make me very excited by the time we come back from these summer games andrew yeah we are going to be fully engaged in yeah uh the nfl football season and even though i even though i i like to complain about the ads for the programs many of them on the very network i work for the columbia broadcast system even so i somehow kind of weirdly love seeing all the promos for all the kind of lame shows that i won't watch the rhythm of the whole thing is just kind of pleasant to me in a way um and i'm wondering too we can't get into this right now we're still trying to do a a dang jpeg but because you don't always watch your foot because you're a famously a cord cutter and you don't always watch your football through maybe extremely legal means does that mean you miss out on the local commercial or the the the network commercial situation if you're watching some feed from like a sound truck parked outside of uh you know Reliant Stadium are you getting all of those commercials and promos for young Sheldon it really depends on the feed that

00:29:57 - 00:30:00 | Speaker 1:

one gets now in the Pfff.

00:30:00 - 00:30:08 | Speaker 2:

like i've only been through one football season as a cord cutter and i do think that i missed out on a lot of the commercials because you just get like that the nfl shield like spinning around on

00:30:08 - 00:30:14 | Speaker 1:

a blue plane or something along those you want baseball the doggies got your cover i mean this

00:30:14 - 00:32:45 | Speaker 2:

is something that i mean we're gonna have to see how this works out but i've really been kind of coming to grips with the fact that this is gonna be the first time in probably like a decade that i'm not like really giving myself over to football this year just because of like just because of um you know my responsibilities with the volunteer group that i do on sundays and sort of realizing that like we're at a really critical moment with the group with like kind of getting volunteers like it's just it's the group's been around for like a long time and we're just at this stage of just like a lot of the people who started it aren't involved anymore we just don't have much volunteers and like there are many volunteers and like can we put the shout out to the tens i mean We've done that and I've got, you know, I volunteer with some folks, but like, I mean, yeah, if you're interested and you want to spend your Sundays, you know, handing out food in North Seattle, hit me up, andrewtbtl.net. I don't want to put, we ask a lot of our audience and I don't necessarily want to make people feel obligated to do that. But the point is, like, there are certain things that I just do every week with that group anyway. And it's like it's almost getting harder to try to keep one foot in that world on Sundays and one foot in the football world because it's like, OK, well, then I got to coordinate and I got to get the beverages to this person. And, you know, then I'm also just a real control freak. And so, like, you know, I always make sure that these supplies are always topped off and that the bin isn't just collecting garbage and blah, blah, blah. And like, if I do the shopping during the week, like me spending time during the week, tracking down the bin, checking in on it, like, could I just hand this stuff off? Could I just care less? Well, that makes me sound like I'm a hero. I don't mean it that way. I'm like, there are things I could do, I'm sure, that I could prioritize football. But it just sort of, the whole thing sounds more exhausting to me than just being like, you know what, maybe I should just say, if the games are on Sunday, I'm probably going to miss most of them. And a bunch of them won't be. A bunch of them will be on Thursdays and Sunday nights maybe. And, you know, and maybe I'll just have to watch maybe I'll just have to be like a normal person for a change, which is watch some football games and not all of them, you know, and and see how that feels. And again, I'm not saying this like, oh, I'm a big hero. It's just like, well, given my level of controlled freakishness over the situation and and just like what I'm willing to give up, like it might just it might just be more healthy for me. So anyway, I have I have weird feelings about this right now because I don't know how this is going to feel when the weather changes and the I get that crisp autumn feel and I just want to go home and watch football. But who knows? Maybe I'll watch more Sunday night football and be less connected to a specific team.

00:32:45 - 00:33:49 | Speaker 1:

Who knows? I first of all, I know that this isn't why you're bringing it up, but I think that's really awesome, man. Like really and truly. And I it's like you're trading to the degree that that doing this volunteering will mean less football watching. You're trading something that has almost no redemptive value whatsoever, NFL football. Well, except for an impact on society and culture, of course. But you're trading something that is, I think, pretty arguably bad for us, and you're trading it for a behavior that is helping in, I don't want to say a small way, but in a way, you're just helping your fellow people on this planet. and that's a really good thing not that you're bringing it up to get those kind of props but like that that change that carbon offset if you will or whatever like you're going from something that is like pretty bad to something that's like well that's something that's going to make somebody's day a little bit better that's a really i i'm i really uh i'm i'm i'm impressed with that decision and again that's not why you brought it up that's not why i brought it up that's not why i was talking about young sheldon somehow you made it about you but no but amazing but so

00:33:49 - 00:34:59 | Speaker 2:

So having said all of that, I'll try not to keep bringing that up because I think I've said that on the show already before, and it does start to feel a little bit weird after a while. But it also is like – because all those feelings that you describe about being excited for the football season and the stuff that comes along with that, right? Like football isn't just about football. It's about getting together with your friends every weekend. It's about young Sheldon. It's about young Sheldon promos. It's about – I like to call the Big Bang Theory old Sheldon now. It's about making chili. it's about it's about having bloody mare it's just like all of these things that it has to do with the the the weather changing and so like as that as that weather changes and like i'm already starting to feel a little bit like can i can i do this so we'll see i'll check in on that but again it's almost like it's just easier if i can just sever that a little bit if i can just like say you know what i'm not going to make it the number one priority then i'm not like i can't tell you Like as much as I love football, I also love kind of sleeping in and stuff. And so like how many days last season were Vives and I running, sometimes literally running to the bus stop. So that, cause I don't want to miss kickoff, you know? And it's funny. It's like, how can I be the, it's like all or nothing with me.

00:35:00 - 00:35:11 | Speaker 1:

Either I'm going to watch it from goddamn kickoff to the end or I'm not going to watch it at all. But like I can't seem to have a casual relationship with it. And so maybe that adds stress to my life anyway.

00:35:12 - 00:36:09 | Speaker 2:

Let me just as we're wrapping things up here today or maybe not. I don't know. Let me just take this to a way more serious level than it needs to be. During the period of time that I wasn't drinking, what was shocking was how much planning I do around drinking and how many decisions I have to make related to drinking. and when you take it out of the mix it's like oh my god i don't have to like think it just it's it's like if you and people who are sober and who continued in sobriety unlike me will tell you this too it's like when when you consume a lot of alcohol the way i do typically you it's just there's so much accounting for it like what's the next day going to be like and where are we going who's driving and how are we going to you know like all of these questions that just suddenly are not even part of the conversation i could kind of see if you're just like yeah i'll watch football if it if I'm if I'm not busy doing something else I'll watch football and if I'm busy doing something else I won't watch football that sounds like if you can you know if you can if you can get into that that sounds like a simplification of your life to a huge degree

00:36:09 - 00:37:27 | Speaker 1:

honestly also if the Browns were still a factor for me I'm not sure I would be making this decision and while I love the Seahawks and really it was like my fandom of the Seahawks that got me into football which then got me looking back at my youth and enjoying some football you know Browns games as a kid but like you know if i didn't hate the browns now because of of what they did on you know by draft not drafting but signing this terrible quarterback talk about immoral you know like if i were still into that like the nostalgia factor of browns football and stuff would be another thing that might be harder for me to make this decision and not that i don't love the seahawks but like you know the the seahawks era that i watch with russell wilson wilson is over and they're building a new era and it's fun and it's exciting but i just don't have the connection to it yeah and in a certain way like this is weird but I almost do wonder if some of my love of football is going to I mean there's something about all rooting for the same team together going and talking with Anita and Kevin who know football better than me and like leaning things off of them about the Seahawks you know I do like that but it also might just be fun to like really appreciate a good Chiefs game you know and like and and the Ravens you know now that I don't hate the Ravens because of the Browns like I can just watch a nice Sunday night football game with the ravens and root for lamar jackson or whatever so they kind of become i'm not saying this

00:37:27 - 00:37:50 | Speaker 2:

sarcastically but more like uh and i was gonna say a fan of the league or just an interested party in kind of what goes on maybe a little bit less specifically tied to the seattle team and more just like oh i'm gonna watch these incredibly gifted athletes do this really hard thing and whoever they are i'll watch it if if it fits into my schedule like be a real rob low i wasn't that's

00:37:50 - 00:38:13 | Speaker 1:

why i preface that i'm not i'm not trying to roast you nfl actually i would kill for one of those nf if people don't know what we're talking about there's this viral photo i don't know like five years ago now and it's just like rob low had some nfl game and he's not wearing a baseball cap that roots on either team it just has the nfl logo on it that is the most rob low that is the

00:38:13 - 00:38:37 | Speaker 2:

most rob low thing you could possibly do rob low who hasn't eaten a carb since 1982 and does the ads for the Atkins Slim Fast or whatever. Rob Lowe, who, again, to his credit, is well-known to be a sober person. Rob Lowe, who just seems to have totally mastered life and isn't aging and doesn't ever kind of tick anyone off ever, is, of course, wearing a hat that just sits in the NFL.

00:38:37 - 00:38:38 | Unknown:

So great.

00:38:43 - 00:39:18 | Speaker 2:

I don't want to tick anyone off, Andrew. Which is why I'm going to thank the Daily donors today for making this episode possible this summer game of course we're talking about listeners like molly huff in wheaton illinois now this is interesting home of wheaton bible college where many people that i played high school basketball with ended up going that was kind of the the league i played in mostly was a kind of a small high school league and then wheaton was about the like you know the really good players would go play at dort or wheaton places like that

00:39:18 - 00:39:20 | Speaker 1:

Fun fact, it's named after Will Wheaton.

00:39:21 - 00:39:38 | Speaker 2:

Uh-huh. Yes. They just changed the name like 15 years ago. Not when he was in Stand By Me, but when he sort of blew up again with all the cons. Yes, exactly. That was when they really got in on the Will Wheaton craze. Thanks also to Molly Price in Seattle, Washington. Look at that, though.

00:39:38 - 00:39:42 | Speaker 1:

Two Mollies cutting it up. A Molly with a Y and a Molly with an I-E.

00:39:42 - 00:39:59 | Speaker 2:

You two should be friends and compare notes on what it's been like to go through life with different spellings of the same name. It's going to be pen pals. Sue Strauss is in Orlando, Florida. Thank you, Sue. God, I would love the next name to be a Sue. It's not. It's Sarah, though. It's kind of close. Sarah Sambol.

00:40:00 - 00:40:30 | Speaker 1:

is in Tacoma, Washington. Thank you, Sarah. Thank you, Sarah. Sue is my mom's name, and Sarah is my sister's name. So we do have something working there. And then, oh, look at this. All of our listeners appear to be women, I guess. Oh, yeah. I mean, you can't always tell by a name, but we got Molly, Molly, Sue, Sarah, and then Margaret Kay is in Edinburgh. UK. Yeah, Edinburgh Fringe Festival. territory, correct?

00:40:31 - 00:40:33 | Speaker 2:

I don't know. That's the only reason.

00:40:34 - 00:40:37 | Speaker 1:

That's the only way I know that, because I would say Edinburgh. That looks like

00:40:37 - 00:40:39 | Speaker 2:

Edinburgh to me. Yeah, it does look like Edinburgh, but I

00:40:39 - 00:40:59 | Speaker 1:

know there's... I hear the festival named all the time in Edinburgh. I bet you that's the same place. Oh, yeah. It's either... Scotland? Yes. Oh, yeah. Edinburgh. Wait. It's in Scotland, is it not? It seems like it's in Scotland. We don't have the nation of origin here, but I think it's Scotland, right? Yeah, I'm pretty sure. Okay. Well, thanks, Margaret. Wherever ye may

00:40:59 - 00:41:05 | Speaker 2:

be and then thanks of course don't put out airs for our european well also a pirate

00:41:05 - 00:41:27 | Speaker 1:

margaret wherever ye may be what that's not how they talk in scotland uh megan moore is in lake forest park washington where andrew likes to go by his cameras didn't you go to many a meeting with someone not many didn't you go to one meeting no in lake

00:41:27 - 00:41:37 | Speaker 2:

forest park to get your camera no i don't why did i think so unless i did and i did is there a shopping center there like a big outdoor shop that was lake forest park that wasn't seattle proper

00:41:37 - 00:41:50 | Speaker 1:

if you were going along lake city way yeah north on lake city way and then you go past deja vu okay um so that's my locator and then you keep going past that one diner that that lunch place

00:41:50 - 00:41:55 | Speaker 2:

you like to go to sometimes you used to go to floann's maybe yep and you're just can you're

00:41:55 - 00:42:00 | Speaker 1:

you're still on lake city way but at some point it's gonna change andrew town center at lake

00:42:00 - 00:42:39 | Speaker 2:

forest park i'm looking at the outside yes i believe that because i bought my camera off of craigslist from a fellow who ended up uh also being a kuow employee at one point he's retired now uh he's not somebody i ended up knowing or working with i found out later but yeah i did buy my camera in this literally in this parking lot i remember i had to like i looked at the camera we met he showed me the lenses and everything and i'm like all right i'm gonna go to that atm across the way and i got 600 and i remember it seemed seemed like a pretty long walk across a short parking lot with 600 bucks in my pocket i don't carry that much cash why does andrew why does my

00:42:39 - 00:42:53 | Speaker 1:

brain remember that but not um i don't want to give a name because then they'll know i don't remember their birthday but let's just say people in my life close to me i have to i have to check my calendar to remember when people's birthdays are but i remember you bought a camera used

00:42:53 - 00:43:30 | Speaker 2:

in a parking lot at the lake forest park mall this is a weird thing to ask you because i was so secretive like annoyingly secretive i would say about my birthday for a long time but that was like in the era of facebook and everything i just i would always get irritated by everybody wishing me a happy birthday on facebook whatever but i purposely tried to keep my birthday away from you and the listeners for so long I'm wondering if it ended up weaseling its way into your brain better than people who wish you would remember do you know when my birthday is you don't have to give out the date I'm not trying to be thirsty here but do you think you know when my birthday is and I don't care I

00:43:30 - 00:43:42 | Speaker 1:

think I have it within a three day roughly three day window and would you mind if I guess no I don't care go ahead it's the summer games man it's either November 12th or November 15th oh

00:43:42 - 00:43:45 | Speaker 2:

Oh, no, it's November 27th, but you did get the, you got the.

00:43:45 - 00:43:46 | Speaker 1:

I was in the month.

00:43:46 - 00:43:58 | Speaker 2:

Yeah, and I always get yours confused. I always, can I ever remember, at first I think it's Cinco de Mayo, but it's not. I think that's another friend of mine. Are you the 13th of May? I'm the 8th of May. The 8th of May. The 8th of May. Yes.

00:43:58 - 00:44:02 | Speaker 1:

I love that song. May 8th. I'm just such a Taurus, Andrew. Yeah, I know.

00:44:02 - 00:44:03 | Speaker 2:

Hey, I have. What's your sign?

00:44:03 - 00:44:04 | Speaker 1:

What does November mean?

00:44:04 - 00:44:37 | Speaker 2:

Oh, Sagittarius. Oh, sure. Absolutely. Sure, absolutely. I have a really fun idea. I'm not going to give it to you now. I'm going to say it on tomorrow's show. We end the show? Yeah, first of all, the first idea is we're going to end the show, and then we're going to come back tomorrow, and I'm throwing the show sheet away, Luke. Love it. Because I have an idea for a summer game that we're going to make up here on the fly, sort of, without giving out too many clues. I'm thinking of it because it's something that keeps coming up the past couple of days on the show, and I'm going to introduce it to you tomorrow.

00:44:37 - 00:44:45 | Speaker 1:

Okay. I'm looking forward to that. And I hope the listeners are too Because that's what's happening On tomorrow's Summer Games edition So please do join us

00:44:45 - 00:44:50 | Speaker 2:
