Your Honor, this guy has been making bootleg Simpsons merchandise. Bart Scampson. He is quite a scam. Scampson.

00:00:12 - 00:00:29 | Speaker 4:

Bart Scampson. Ska? Like the music? Ska? Ska. Ska. M-ka-m-ka-m-ka-m-ka-m-ka-m-ka-m-ka-m-ka-m-ka-m-ka-m-ka-m-ka-m-ka-m-ka-m-ka. I could start with scamp misspelled. You don't know Ska? In all your education you've got to go to law school and everything and judge school or whatever it is you go to and you don't know the word Ska? Welcome to America, friend.

00:00:29 - 00:00:36 | Speaker 3:

I do not have a problem in general with bootleg Simpsons merchandise, but this is the worst pun ever. It's a thinker. You've got to think about it.

00:00:37 - 00:01:09 | Speaker 1:

TBTL! All right, here we go. Another edition of the TBTL Summer Games coming at you here on this Thursday. Excuse me, Wednesday. Wednesday. If you think it's Thursday If your watch says Thursday Sorry, you're wrong It's actually a Wednesday I'm actually Luke Burbank Right over there is actually Andrew Walsh Welcome to the show Sorry to get us off to such a mixed up start

00:01:09 - 00:01:28 | Speaker 2:

No, I want to clear things up though If you are listening on a Thursday To a show that was recorded on Wednesday Stay in line Yeah, right, exactly Now if you're listening on a Tuesday It means either you're a time traveler or you're way behind on this show, and I don't know what to do. I'm sorry that I sounded...

00:01:28 - 00:01:58 | Speaker 1:

I sound distracted, Andrew, because a lot has been going on around here at the Riverhouse Studio perched high above the mighty Columbia. As I told you, I've become a binocular boy, and I just had a situation happen here. A BB, we call him. Yeah, exactly. B-O-I, binocular boy. And I just had a whole situation going on here that was taking up a lot of my attention. That's why I got up to such a cold start at the top of the show. So, I like to sit here and watch the boats go by while you and I are talking. It's my version of Hex Empire, right?

00:01:58 - 00:01:58 | Speaker 2:

Sure, yep.

00:01:59 - 00:03:28 | Speaker 1:

And I have an app called Ship Finder. Oh, I got one for airplanes. And it does probably exactly what your airplane one does, which is anytime a very large vessel is, in fact, even tugboats will, any kind of commercially registered boat, I think, is supposed to be on this thing. And as they're going down the Columbia River or up the Columbia River, for that matter, I will look at where I am on this Ship Finder app and then where they are. And then I will get a picture of the boat and I will know what it's carrying typically or what kind of cargo and then where it's come from, where it's going. And that's how I like to spend my days. Everything is going great. I'm up here with a bunch of Costco food and I'm just staring at ships. But a minute ago, a ship came steaming down the Columbia River, and it was not on my ship finder app. Dark ops. Exactly. Cloak and dagger much? RCC compass? Vehicle carrier? I found that out because I had my binoculars out, Andrew, and I read the name of the boat on the side of it. And then I looked it up on a different website, marinetraffic.com, which explained to me. is, I guess it generally works between well, it ends up in Portland a lot, and it's taking a bunch of cars down to Portland I learned, but I literally had a moment of thinking, are they trying to go is this the hunt for Red October? Are they trying to go off of radar here? Why are they not on the Ship Finder app?

00:03:29 - 00:03:35 | Speaker 2:

Yeah, I do wonder what's going, I mean, it's not a, you don't think it's a government vessel No, it's a

00:03:35 - 00:04:31 | Speaker 1:

I actually, surprisingly, would you think the name rcc compass would be so unique to this boat that there's only one of them in the world huh that seems to me like it's just like a class of boat nope yeah it's the rcc compass it's a vehicles carrier andrew and it is of a bahamian registry i think there's probably some tax implications for that that's why a lot of boats are registered in the bahamas and um i was able to read that because of my binoculars and while i was looking at it andrew into my field of vision came two Chinook military helicopters that were flying what looked like about 100 feet above the Columbia River. So then I was watching them. It's a whole... I'm not saying I want to break my leg Jimmy Stewart-style in Rear Window, but I'm just saying I've got the makings for one of those kinds of movies. I'm sitting here with my binoculars. I even bought a command hook. You know those kind of like chintzy hooks you glue to the wall?

00:04:31 - 00:04:31 | Speaker 2:

Oh, yeah.

00:04:32 - 00:05:00 | Speaker 1:

MC Hammer used to advertise for them, I believe. He sure did. And those were good ads, I thought. They were pretty funny. Because what was happening with my binoculars here... Oh, and also, tell Veeves, I'm birdwatching. I'm not keeping track of it, but I'm looking out on a stand of trees. And any time a cool bird lands there, which is to say any kind of bird... That's how it begins. You're going to start recognizing the birds. Then you're going to recognize the songs. Peeping them with my binoculars. But the problem is, I would constantly put the binoculars on the windowsill. And then, if I were to...

00:05:00 - 00:05:53 | Speaker 2:

open the window it would knock the binoculars so i didn't have i was like where can these they can't be on my table because they're going to fall over they can't be on the windowsill because they keep getting knocked by when i open and close the window so i got a command hook like taped it to the wall i went and found a drawstring from a laundry bag from the hotel june in la snipped the um the the the like cord from the laundry bag the thing you cinch it up with fashioned that into a little rope on the binoculars and now the binoculars sit attached to the command hook ready for me to grab them at any moment and see what's going on on the mighty columbia river i love that i'm so into it man but you you actually had a you were throwing out the game plan oh yeah yeah for today's show you know usually we we script the first 50 plays of the summer game sure yeah on a tight script and then after that we just react that's what you're doing right now you're just reacting

00:05:53 - 00:08:48 | Speaker 1:

Now, I kind of gave you a hint. I was trying to be vague at the end of yesterday's show. I was only barely listening. I have no idea what we're going to do today. Because they say that good podcasting is made from vagueness. And half listening while looking at boats. What does Principal Blackman say in Strangers with Candy? I'm an obtuse man, so I'll try to be oblique. That's a great line. It is such a good line. I'm trying to figure out, do I even have that drop here? But do you have any idea what my idea here is? I have no idea. Here is my idea. First of all, my idea is to kill this music and then turn up my computer so I can play this. I'm an obtuse man, so I'll try to be oblique. That's so great. By the way, Gregory Holliman. Is that the actor's name? That's the actor who plays Principal Onyx Blackman. Such a good voice, too. Yeah, oh my gosh. Totally. Perfect. um okay so here's what i was going to suggest um throughout this week's shows and also going back months now on tbtl i have mentioned this this game that i play to go to sleep at night where i come up with something this was genevieve's idea originally or she's the one who taught it to me as a as a as a mechanism to maybe try to lull your mind into sleep which is come up with some sort of category of movie and then go through the alphabet and name movies alphabetically that fit into that category it could be anything it could be something as simple as comedies and then you would just start with a comedy that begins with the letter a then move on to b move on to c eventually you fall asleep um or it could be much more complicated than that which is what genevieve does because she basically is a walking talking imdb right so she'll be like comedies that star dogs in the late 1970s you know and so that'll be like her category well i'm not good like that so i i have pretty broad categories and we've mentioned that for months and months and months now i've been playing the same little category that i came up with and i'll reset it here movies that are two words only luke that's key and the world is always the no i will kick you out it'll turn off your microphone so and i've given this example like it starts with for me i always start with the apartment and they by the way i said comedies there before just as as a category but these are not comedies these are any movie that begin with the word the and then has one single word after that and so i've mentioned the apartment and then for the b's you would say um the burbs and then the cooler and then the doors and then the expendables now i have gone up through the letter k so far and i actually went on slack and asked for some helps with some k but i think that you i'm going to give you every one that i've basically memorized so far up to

00:08:48 - 00:09:27 | Speaker 1:

the letter k okay and then you and i are going to see if we can come up with j through z which i mean i don't think we're we're not going to come up with an x like xanadu is the only movie that begins with x and it's not xanadu oh actually the x-men that would x-men one word i mean it's a hyphenated word i would actually take that since x is so difficult okay we're getting ahead of ourselves so okay now the pressure's on me do you hear i did pull this music i love it i was gonna play something like that is this the version that you always play do you have a probably i was gonna play tim and eric's version of it okay here we go i actually do think

00:09:27 - 00:09:55 | Speaker 2:

you have a better version of hooray for hollywood you know if it's not gonna make i want to i'll apologize in advance if this makes an unpleasant sound as i'm plug i don't have that cord plugged in right now everybody calm down this is gonna hurt a little bit okay okay we are strapped in and we are going to try to find i don't even know if i have that on this particular system okay we can just go i think yours actually sounds it doesn't have lyrics which is maybe better for

00:09:55 - 00:09:59 | Speaker 1:

this. Let's see. Because yours is the lyric version, right?

00:10:00 - 00:10:12 | Speaker 2:

uh i think so but i yeah i like yours i think yours all right let's just go with this yeah i've got hooray for hollywood the mgm orchestra oh see this is benny goodman yeah i i mean i

00:10:12 - 00:10:16 | Speaker 1:

think yours is just gonna go with it fine okay all right we'll go with this for now but we have

00:10:16 - 00:10:32 | Speaker 2:

the mgm orchestra but if you want anything else from hooray for hollywood um the platinum collection i've got it all andrew i paid good money for this that's a true story i actually at some point years ago bought this entire huge album called Hooray for Hollywood, The Platinum

00:10:32 - 00:10:34 | Speaker 1:

Collection. Just so you could have this one song

00:10:34 - 00:10:56 | Speaker 2:

for TBTL? Basically, yeah. Just so I could have music like this. I hope you wrote it off. It's got some real jams. It's got Meet Me in St. Louis by Judy Garland. It's got It's got I Like I Like a Guy I Like a Guy What Takes His Time by Mae West I like a guy what takes his time I think I would like that song

00:10:57 - 00:11:10 | Speaker 1:

Okay, I'm going to start this. I'm doing this off the dome here. Usually I rattle through a whole bunch of these, and you'll hear me slow down as I get further and further into the alphabet. And then eventually I'll fall asleep. So that'll also be, and you'll just hear this.

00:11:10 - 00:11:27 | Speaker 2:

I didn't even think about the implication. This is actually perfect, Andrew. You know, a lot of people use this show to fall asleep. This is taking it to another level where we're just going to do a fall asleep operation here, like a procedure that causes you to fall asleep for the listeners so they, too, can fall asleep.

00:11:27 - 00:11:29 | Speaker 1:

Here we go, starting with A.

00:11:29 - 00:11:29 | Speaker 2:

Here I am.

00:11:30 - 00:11:52 | Speaker 1:

You're very familiar with a bunch of these, but I need to start from the beginning. The apartment, the burbs, the cooler, the doors, the expendables, the fighter, the goonies. I always think of you in that because it came up on the show where I said the gremlins, and you said it's not the gremlins. Oh, look.

00:11:52 - 00:11:56 | Speaker 2:

This is the exact version that I have

00:11:56 - 00:12:21 | Speaker 1:

Oh yeah, I think you just cut to the lyrics earlier But anyway, so The Goonies You gave me that one, Luke, thank you You're welcome The Haunting, which I got stuck on H for a really long time Because I thought there must be a movie called The Haunting But like, one of the rules is you can't just throw out a movie that you assume is a movie I would have gone with The Help That's so much better Because that's a movie that I actually I didn't see it, but I actually like know of it

00:12:21 - 00:12:26 | Speaker 2:

Right, it's not just like you're taking a guess at some 1970s, they made a movie called The Haunting.

00:12:26 - 00:12:29 | Speaker 1:

So good. Okay, see, I should have gotten you on board with this a long time ago.

00:12:29 - 00:12:32 | Speaker 2:

You should have called me at 2 in the morning when you were trying to fall asleep.

00:12:32 - 00:12:36 | Speaker 1:

So that's H. Oh, The Insider. I got stuck on that for a long time, but The Insider.

00:12:36 - 00:12:37 | Speaker 2:

Nice, yeah, that's a tough one.

00:12:38 - 00:12:45 | Speaker 1:

That's a Russell Crowe film, right? Yes, and what industry does he work for, though? That's not the tobacco one, I don't think. That's, thank you for smoking. I think he is.

00:12:45 - 00:12:52 | Speaker 2:

I think his name was Wygend, the character, the real-life person who sort of turned on On R.J.R. Nabisco.

00:12:53 - 00:12:57 | Speaker 1:

Okay. There's several kind of movies like that.

00:12:57 - 00:13:02 | Speaker 2:

A research chemist comes under personal and professional attack when he decides to appear in a 60-minute expose on big tobacco.

00:13:02 - 00:13:05 | Speaker 1:

Yes, so it is the big tobacco one, but then there's a more humorous.

00:13:05 - 00:13:07 | Speaker 2:

Jeffrey Weigand, played by Russell Crowe.

00:13:07 - 00:13:19 | Speaker 1:

But there's a more humorous one, Thank You for Smoking, which is kind of a similar thing. But then, what's the other one? What was the huge company that used to be in every NPR credit ever?

00:13:19 - 00:13:21 | Speaker 2:

Monsanto or Archer Daniels Midland?

00:13:21 - 00:13:28 | Speaker 1:

Archer Daniels Midland. Wasn't there a movie about some insider information about Archer's ADM, right? Yeah.

00:13:29 - 00:13:40 | Speaker 2:

ADM scandal movie. Anything? Let's see. Mark. Matt Damon. Yes. The Informant. The Informant. That could also be an I.

00:13:40 - 00:14:53 | Speaker 1:

Yeah. See, I'm sort of conflating them because I don't think I've seen the insider. I think they read very similarly. Okay. You know what? I'm going to swap that one out, too. We're going to go with I, the Informant. now h i j i think oh no this is the jerk that's obvious okay and then the k i got stuck on k for a long long time and i always wanted to say the killing and then i was like no that was a tv show about a murder in seattle but uh listen i so i opened this up to um the crowd on slack and somebody said no the killing is a movie um by a famous who directed mash um oh altman robert altman i feel like it might have been an altman movie possibly so this was tough for me because i don't know that movie but i have to just trust that it's a movie because i could not think of any more accessible case no because kite runner is two words right yes that's funny that um oh kubrick i'm sorry the killing is a kubrick film not an altman film that makes so much more sense my apologies kite runner is two words i just yeah i was always like could kite runner be like hyphenated but I'm like no that's cheating and if you're gonna why cheat if you're playing this game yourself can you think of anything better than The Killing a movie that I have not seen although does come highly recommended by our listener

00:14:53 - 00:15:16 | Speaker 2:

I'm already finding myself in that mode that you said is not advisable, where you're just thinking, did they make a movie called The Klan? They must have made a movie called The Klan. Because The Klan is bad, and we should probably have movies that talk about how it's bad. The, the...

00:15:16 - 00:15:26 | Speaker 1:

We can go with the killing here, by the way. I shouldn't probably get a... Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good. So we could move on to L, which is, I believe, as far as I've gotten.

00:15:26 - 00:16:16 | Speaker 2:

There just aren't as many words that start with K, I guess, for that are followed by the definite article. The Kangaroo? Did somebody make a movie called The Kangaroo at some point? I promise you there's a movie called The Kangaroo, but again, have we really... The Koopa Troopa. The Kangaroo movie. Well, Kangaroo Jack really kind of took all the air out of that space. Is it Kangaroo Jack or The Kangaroo Jack? That's a question. The cover of Kangaroo Jack is just... It's just straight out of the Simpsons poochie plotline. It is It's like a rap and kangaroo wearing sunglasses Who's going to menace the actor I think Anthony King and also Jerry O'Connell It's just about It's another Michael Shannon vehicle too I didn't realize that Are you seeing the cover where he's got The kangaroo just got the sunglasses on

00:16:16 - 00:16:51 | Speaker 1:

I thought this was A um oh shoot Uh oh never mind I thought this was who's everybody's favorite Actor who I didn't really like too much But then he died tragically and I feel bad about it everybody's like James Dean yes I did I thought this was a James Dean film I'm so embarrassed that I can't Robin Williams for some reason I thought Kangaroo Jack was a Robin Williams film oh it seems like it could have been yeah but no it seems it's Christopher Walken's in there Michael Shannon but it's not the Kangaroo Jack that's the problem

00:16:51 - 00:16:56 | Speaker 2:

what about the Karate Kid no too many

00:16:56 - 00:17:12 | Speaker 1:

too many if it was just the karate i would take it if it was just the kid i would take it all right let's just park that one let's go with the killing we have something we can put there so that's l does that unlock us a little bit the this may have been a terrible idea now that i'm

00:17:12 - 00:17:32 | Speaker 2:

actually having to think on the fly i do think there was a movie the kid are you looking that up or are you no i'm remembering it up which is like looking it up but in your brain i feel like there was a move i want to say like um i want to say ethan hawk was

00:17:32 - 00:18:04 | Speaker 1:

was in it the kid it was like a western type of deal okay i do see a 2019 film called the kid directed by vincent d'onofrio wow okay it's all he knows it's all he ever wants to know What was that? What's that trailer? I can't even get into that. It's the trailer of a biopic that is about the guy who came up with Tarsian. Who came up with what again? Tarsian, I believe. He's a Pulp Fiction writer.

00:18:04 - 00:18:09 | Speaker 2:

God, it's so great. I know we did a whole show on that not long ago, but that's amazing.

00:18:09 - 00:18:21 | Speaker 1:

That was actually a while back now. So this is one of those things that I have sort of an interesting life where Genevieve Genevieve and I will have inside jokes, like a lot of couples do, that don't make a lot of sense, but they just keep coming back to them.

00:18:21 - 00:18:40 | Speaker 2:

I would put your and Genevieve's inside jokes up against any other couple. I really mean that. You two are both very funny people, and you love to just chop it up, and your guys, you know, look, I don't want to sound judgy, but not all inside jokes among couples are created equal, and you guys have some top-level shit going on.

00:18:40 - 00:19:16 | Speaker 1:

It's not Tarzan, though. It's Conan. Conan. Oh, Conan. Right. A movie about Conan the Barbarian Yeah let's see here What was the name of the movie though About the guy And Vincent D'Onofrio plays him And he spins around at one point during the trailer And says it's all he knows It's all he ever wants to know And Veeves and I had that as an inside joke in our relationship For decades before it finally came up on TBTL And I played the trailer for you And it totally paid off And now other people share that joke The whole wide world The whole wide world trailer

00:19:16 - 00:19:57 | Speaker 2:

And Renee Zellweger was in it too Like this is a pretty I understand that I am just repeating whatever I said the last time This came to my awareness But this is like a This is relative prestige It's so In 1933 a Texas school teacher and aspiring writer named Nova Lynn Price Is introduced by friends to Pulp Fiction writer Robert E. Howard A relationship soon developed between the two But it's doomed by personality conflict and life events, such as the terminal illness of Howard's mother. So it sounds like, are they low-keying the fact that he writes Conan in the movie? Take a listen to this trailer until we get to our favorite line.

00:19:57 - 00:20:00 | Speaker 1:

It's so corny. It is just like the...

00:20:00 - 00:20:01 | Speaker 3:

epitome of corny movies. This is 1996.

00:20:01 - 00:20:26 | Speaker 2:

Bob Howard? Bob's the greatest Pope Rider in the whole world. I'm the boss. Type Rider's the employee. No argument. I don't forget faces. All women's vickies. In his eyes were like burning coal. 5 meters sex deviance. Hey, hell, you be careful with that. That thing is so cute. Ow!

00:20:26 - 00:20:37 | Speaker 3:

is this giving us a weird mix again i was telling you i thought it sounds a little backgroundy to me are we hitting up on that stereo issue again i'm gonna do something weird

00:20:37 - 00:20:57 | Speaker 1:

here now and while you're doing that i'm gonna let people know that this movie uh according to wikipedia cost um let's see 1.3 million dollars to make and it recouped 375 thousand dollars oh goodness gracious did not it did not recoup music by hans zimmer let me see this hans zimmer doesn't got out of bed for under

00:20:57 - 00:21:25 | Speaker 2:

there's a girl who's gonna appreciate your moonlight I'm in the mood to write a love story why don't you tell me about your character Conan Conan is the damnedest bastard there ever was to him combat's the way of life it's all he's ever known all he ever wants to know he's shaking his he shakes his whole body as he stands in a cornfield at night talking

00:21:25 - 00:22:25 | Speaker 1:

about his stupid ass conan it's so weird because i think d'onofrio is a good actor in some things right like vincent d'onofrio i don't think he's not like a steven seagalt i mean he was in platoon i was gonna say he's full metal jacket isn't he oh full metal jackets i always those you want to talk about two movies that i always mix up yeah i could see full metal jacket and platoon yeah i mean he's a good he's a good actor i think you know he's um it's it's not like he's famous for being bad at acting but that just that accent so bad and and again conan he's the creepiest devil you ever met whatever the hell he says like i'd never forget a woman's face or her figure like what it reminds me of a little bit of this famous um uh i'll try to find it here uh what was do you know that um when you have another prestige actor who we're getting no closer to the to the to the cues by the way oh that's easy like what have you gotten to q yet in your mind no i've

00:22:25 - 00:22:30 | Speaker 3:

gotten i haven't gotten the quickening i'm as far as we've gotten okay uh okay sorry i want to i'm

00:22:30 - 00:23:18 | Speaker 1:

loving playing this game but i'm reminded of um gary uh who is oh my goodness gracious um the very um respected actor who was in um immortal beloved and in sid and nancy when he was really young And he was in the vampire movie where he said I've crossed oceans of time to be with you Gary Oldman? Gary Oldman, thank you Andrew Gary Oldman was Once, I think In a movie I'm just going to google Gary Oldman Worst movie, I think he's in Oppenheimer too Gary Oldman is considered To be An incredibly Good actor Tiptoes is the movie I'm thinking of Are you familiar with the movie Tiptoes?

00:23:18 - 00:23:28 | Speaker 3:

I don't think Gary Oldman's an Oppenheimer, by the way. What's that? I don't think Gary Oldman or Goldman is an Oppenheimer. Okay. I'm looking it up. I mean, if so, he was so deep into character that I didn't remember.

00:23:28 - 00:24:47 | Speaker 1:

No, no, no, no. You saw it. I didn't. It just seems like he was an Oppenheimer. I don't know why I thought that. So Tiptoes is, let me just try to find a way to describe it. It was made in 2003. It's a Matthew McConaughey, Kate Beckinsale movie. Oh, McConaughey. Tiptoes movie synopsis. It is wild that this movie was ever made. Like, it's deeply offensive on a bunch of levels. It's just absolutely terrible. It's called Tiptoes. Carol falls in love with Stephen without knowing much about him. When Carol finds herself pregnant, forces Stephen to expose a secret. Stephen happens to be the only average-sized person in a family of dwarves, including his twin brother, Rolf. I believe that might be Rolf might be played by Gary Oldman. So Matthew McConaughey is an average-sized person, and his family are all people of small stature or dwarves or whatever your preferred nomenclature is. And the fact that they have a bunch of average-sized actors, a lot of average-sized actors, playing, portraying people of short stature or little people is, first of all, just crazily offensive. But just the trailer for it I don't know if it works as audio The trailer for like the hijinks that go on And the stuff that you see Gary Oldman doing Pretending to be a little person It is off the charts It's like a fever dream

00:24:47 - 00:24:54 | Speaker 3:

And what year-ish is this? 2003 Oh my god I thought we were talking like early 90s or something

00:24:54 - 00:24:59 | Speaker 1:

I'm going to play you a little bit of the trailer I don't think this is going to pay off But Andrew when you throw out the script When you start freelancing Thanks.

00:25:00 - 00:25:04 | Speaker 2:

Sometimes you let Russ cook, and sometimes he throws an interception. This might be one of those times.

00:25:04 - 00:25:13 | Speaker 1:

Yeah, exactly. Let's see if this works. Carol and Stephen's life together was perfect. I've got to get going.

00:25:13 - 00:25:17 | Speaker 4:

Right this second. Hey, baby. Hey, sweetie.

00:25:18 - 00:25:42 | Speaker 2:

I love you. There's one small problem. This is Gary Oldman driving up in some kind of modified motorcycle. and again the entire thing reeks of like Dorf on golf because Gary Oldman is not a person of small stature so every shot of him has to be doing this weird forced perspective where they're trying to change what the look of his physical body is

00:25:42 - 00:25:47 | Speaker 3:

give us some more level too what's that? give us some more level on your end too if you can

00:25:47 - 00:27:06 | Speaker 2:

oh okay sure absolutely when we're talking about the tiptoes trailer turn it up dude crank it up is that Freebird? okay so also i mean there's so much i want to tell you that's just visual about the movie so it starts with matthew mcconaughey and kate beckinsale are about to kind of get like matthew mcconaughey's got a suit on he's late for a meeting and kate beckinsale clearly wants to engage in a sexual act with him okay so and that's and he doesn't have time because he's got a meeting and then it just for some reason on the screen the words wild bunch just appear like apropos of nothing so it's just like here we go kate beckinsale carol and steven's life together was perfect i've gotta get going right this second now it just says wild bunch for some reason on screen and we see gary oldman driving his kind of like motorcycle he sits in on his way to hey baby to mess everything up i love you there's one small problem hi i'm ross i'm his brother which so here's gary oldman introducing himself as ralph matthew mcconaughey's brother are your parents um yeah it can tear them apart i think you're gonna let me know that everyone in your family's a midget oh see not a word that we would ever use again also one small problem

00:27:06 - 00:27:11 | Speaker 3:

is not exactly uh i know that they're doing a play on words there that is not super respectful

00:27:11 - 00:27:38 | Speaker 2:

i mean i don't even want to play the rest of the trailer because they'll probably end up being like 10 things that we wouldn't say but it is that is bananas it's bananas that it happened it's bananas gary oldman was in it and again i love that guy it's not i'm not trying to be i'm not trying to i don't know like roast him because every time i see him interviewed he seems just like an absolutely delightful person but like it's crazy to me that in 2003 2003 especially that it's way too late for using that word it's way too late for having these people portray

00:27:38 - 00:27:46 | Speaker 3:

peter dinklage is in it now the peter dinklage is in it that's interesting i was even thinking like in this day and age i feel like this is the type of thing that dinklage would like

00:27:46 - 00:28:22 | Speaker 2:

speak out against well this is where it gets very complicated and this goes for a lot of actors who have been traditionally marginalized from casting and only given opportunities to play some stereotypical characters or you know i i don't think it's fair to judge those actors for taking those roles yeah when they're the only roles available to them so it's very complicated right because it's like i don't like that i don't i don't feel great about the way that the that the little people are being portrayed yes in in the film and many of the actors are in fact actually little people um but i also totally understand needing to take the gig because that was the work

00:28:22 - 00:29:07 | Speaker 3:

that was being offered but did you know that and it gets even more complicated because more recently although not super recently there were a bunch of like kind of actors in the dwarf community who were upset with dinklage for speaking out against um the new snow white remake they're like doing a live action version or something yes and so they don't have seven dwarves i think they have maybe one little person in there i'm not sure and and i think that dinklage was on maron's show and kind of saying like yeah like we're seriously gonna like be making a seven dwarves movie like that's pretty disrespectful but then there are a bunch of other actors who are like bro we could use these roles sure like we're out here working and so that was complicated too i mean it's a very

00:29:07 - 00:30:00 | Speaker 2:

complicated issue yes absolutely uh and you know as a as an average size person i you know probably should just like i'll just slowly bow out of it you know between peter dinklage and the larger community of little people um but yeah it's it's very complicated and very uh layered um i once had we're getting no closer to solving the the quiz i had a very um i really liked him but he was an incredibly serious acting teacher in college like just a how do i even put it he was just like like think about a kind of a stereotype of a drama teacher at the college level who also acted in theater like really he was in actually very big theatrical productions in various cities like he was a and the way he taught the acting class was very kind of actorly right if that makes sense It's like he was a very serious fellow. I'm not.

00:30:00 - 00:31:12 | Speaker 1:

i'm going to mention his name because i don't i don't want to i don't i like the guy and stuff but this really gets to the question of like what representation and what roles are being offered to people but he was of south asian descent and he's a very like we would have these long ponderous conversations the class about acting and meisner and the magic if and all these things and it was like and then one day i was watching married with children and there he was playing a mini mart i think the owner of a mini mart who's friends with bud bundy and it was the full kind of unfortunate stereotype of like a south asian person in america and i remember just being like my mind exploding because this was such an unserious performance by somebody who i knew to be so serious about acting yeah and again it just comes back to the like what are you not going to be on a major network comedy as an actor um when you know people look like you are not being offered good real roles at that time of course you're going to do it right you know and i don't know in my mind at the time if i even i'm sure i didn't experience it on that level i'm sure i didn't have those thoughts but i just remember being like holy shit it's my acting teacher on married with children and it's not acting in the kind of role that like i would expect for this

00:31:12 - 00:31:57 | Speaker 2:

very serious thespy and i'm i don't know if i'm going to pronounce his name correctly but k who Kwan who was in the summer block but he was the kid in the Indiana Jones movies and then was in that the blockbuster everything everywhere all at once um which just like how many films like that just like totally shake up the etch-a-sketch I would say in like filmmaking or whatever hugely celebrated movie but it's like I've always felt pretty uncomfortable about his role in the in indiana jones movies because of the this very stereotypical in the 1980s young asian kid but it doesn't sound like and we talked about this on the show i think you had been reading more interviews with kwan saying that like that he doesn't necessarily have regret about that

00:31:57 - 00:33:43 | Speaker 1:

right right no i mean i i don't i think uh i think when i remember there being a lot of stories written about him because of this unbelievable thing of him you know after this long career in and out of the business and on both sides of the camera than winning an oscar i mean it was such a it was a it was a real feel-good story but i i i don't yeah i don't think he um was and i think he was in the goonies too right gee oh right yes um so i yeah i don't remember him saying that he i think i do think that in later life of course he would say that the lack of representation um you know of those sorts of roles for an asian man what led to him basically not being in hollywood anymore they just weren't roles for him so i think in that case he would say that's not a good thing but as far as like how he was portrayed in the indiana jones movies i didn't remember reading him saying that he felt that to be regrettable or anything and again i mean what i would just say as a straight white relatively average sized male i'm just going to step away and let all of the folks who don't look like me feel however they want to feel about things like representation in films you know yeah because just like i i just don't yeah i'm certainly not gonna try to to um weigh in on that stuff in a way that like it's like well he should feel bad about playing the stereotype because also side note i believe he was from vietnam like originally born in vietnam had moved to california with his family and like went to an audition maybe with his brother that's also always the story of everyone who gets a role they went to the audition with someone else like they were somebody's ride and then they walked in and the casting director said well do you want to try and they said who me and then they got the role so i could be confusing that exact story of how we got indiana jones but um anyway all right so we did not we did not achieve

00:33:43 - 00:33:56 | Speaker 2:

one we have not achieved a single one we are still exactly where i've left off and this is why most people are falling asleep now the killing is k right okay yeah then no that we the kid the kid

00:33:56 - 00:34:00 | Speaker 1:

we got okay okay that was a good i'm proud that was a killing you that's right you did swap it

00:34:00 - 00:34:15 | Speaker 2:

out with the kid but now do we have an l because now i think we gotta get out of here right we're kind of running out of time um the the loser the lion the lion just like uh what what's what's his

00:34:15 - 00:34:26 | Speaker 1:

what's his royalty status we don't know we're not focusing on that right now he's the lion is he a king who knows the hold on i mean there's definitely got a movie be a movie called the

00:34:26 - 00:34:37 | Speaker 2:

loser but that's yeah that feels like we're just exactly when i was playing this game without the the article i remember i put in looper here but it's not oh that's a great film great yeah like

00:34:37 - 00:34:43 | Speaker 1:

neo-noir yeah gora what's his name justin long and or joseph gordon levitt i don't know you're

00:34:43 - 00:34:52 | Speaker 2:

thinking of his first movie brick looper is the same director but it came later yeah looper is pretty good but it's a little bit more sci-fi brick i'm a big fan of you're yes you're right

00:34:52 - 00:35:11 | Speaker 1:

brick is what i was thinking of let's see here okay the we can do this we can do this the the I feel like Jesus had this story about the leper, probably, right? I bet you. Oh, I'm sure there's a probably. Somebody made a movie about that. The Leftovers is a TV show. That would be fun. Oh, man.

00:35:12 - 00:35:16 | Speaker 2:

The long and winding road. Could it be a song that has more words?

00:35:16 - 00:35:21 | Speaker 1:

It could be a song that has more. Yes, if you're going to use a song, it has to have a lot of words. That's the key.

00:35:23 - 00:35:26 | Speaker 2:

The light.

00:35:26 - 00:35:29 | Speaker 1:

See this is where I just start throwing out words

00:35:29 - 00:35:34 | Speaker 2:

That might prompt you Yes no I like this

00:35:34 - 00:35:46 | Speaker 1:

I go through the vowels Sometimes I'll see like I'll go start With A the lake The lake house There's got to be a movie called The Lost There's got to be a movie called The Lake Got to be a movie called The Lost But we don't know them

00:35:46 - 00:35:59 | Speaker 2:

The Lost Boys is an extra word Boy the one word thing really Constrains it in a good way I mean not good for the listeners right now But for me, trying to fall asleep while co-hosting the program

00:35:59 - 00:36:02 | Speaker 1:

The Lady Killers has too many letters

00:36:02 - 00:36:04 | Speaker 2:

I mean, Lady Killers seems like one word

00:36:04 - 00:36:11 | Speaker 1:

Oh, well, I'll look This is a Coen Brothers movie, right? The Lady Killers I don't think that's one word I think it is

00:36:11 - 00:36:13 | Speaker 2:

Is that like William H. Macy in that or something?

00:36:14 - 00:36:32 | Speaker 1:

Whoa! It's one word It is I remember that from like the posters Really? It is one word We got in there We got one in there see me just throwing things out there this is why i'm asking you to come sleep over can i just read

00:36:32 - 00:37:22 | Speaker 2:

00:37:22 - 00:37:24 | Speaker 1:

And also I'll do the occasional

00:37:24 - 00:37:37 | Speaker 2:

00:37:37 - 00:37:54 | Speaker 1:

Are we going on? I just assumed that we were going to do A little donor thank you here I thought we were trying to guess the donor's names I mean I'm sorry I thought that we were both Doing the same thing there I thought you were wrapping up and I was going to be like Johnny on the spot with the Thank You Baby music, but I kind of ruined everything.

00:37:54 - 00:37:58 | Speaker 2:

No, you didn't ruin anything at all. I think TV... Do we want to try to do...

00:37:58 - 00:38:16 | Speaker 1:

So J-K-L-M should not be that hard, right? The Mowage. No, that's not it? Okay. The... The Monkey Paw? Did they ever turn that into it? See, that's not fair, though. Did they ever... The Monkey.

00:38:16 - 00:38:19 | Speaker 2:

There has to be a movie called The Monkey. The Monkey.

00:38:19 - 00:38:27 | Speaker 1:

monkey the the most oh luke the master oh we just talked about that yesterday on the show

00:38:27 - 00:38:36 | Speaker 2:

only that movie had come there you go the master the master l-m-n the the nice guy is his two words

00:38:36 - 00:38:43 | Speaker 1:

but that is definitely yeah the the notebook the notebook the notebook congratulations to us

00:38:43 - 00:39:08 | Speaker 2:

gosling handsome man never seen it have you i have not i've heard um that it's very flat and unemotional as a film goes that there's absolutely no emotional payoff no emotional payoff it's not like a movie that will cause you to sob uncontrollably throughout the entirety of the film watching experience okay that's good we got a few under our bed we can stop torturing the listeners but i i think this is a game we should play offline i'll call you during the

00:39:08 - 00:39:11 | Speaker 1:

mariner's game later we'll just run through some more call me in the middle of the night man

00:39:11 - 00:39:59 | Speaker 2:

we do want to thank our daily donors who whether they like it or not help support today's episode yeah so we should probably stop throwing out the script no way man i disagree i disagree i think i think that was an in its own bizarre way an enjoyable experience for our listeners folks like Laura Case Nagai who's in Puyallup, Washington. Nice, do the Puyallup. Thank you, Laura. You can do it at a walk. You can do it at a gallop. You can do it... I always mess that part up. You can do it at a walk. You can do it at a gallop. You can do it real fast till your heart palpitates. Just don't be late. Do the Puyallup.

00:39:59 - 00:40:00 | Speaker 1:

That what it is.

00:40:00 - 00:40:04 | Speaker 2:

really that was the song oh that must be coming up huh the washington state fair yeah they call

00:40:04 - 00:40:09 | Speaker 1:

it i think they call it the evergreen evergreen state fair now or something you know what i'm

00:40:09 - 00:40:13 | Speaker 2:

going to no i think that isn't that up in everade i thought the oh is it the washington state fair

00:40:13 - 00:40:36 | Speaker 1:

yeah oh okay um i'm going to the oregon state fair and i'm going to see becca got his tickets it's like every it's like culio a vanilla ice um color me bad it's like every person who had a song on the radio particularly sort of like r&b radio in the 90s is going to come out and do their one

00:40:36 - 00:40:46 | Speaker 2:

song i saw this now where are you going to see because i saw somebody's instagrams from this i thought here in washington where oh i'm sure it's touring i'm sure it's hitting all the state

00:40:46 - 00:40:50 | Speaker 1:

fairs and i'll be catching it when it visits salem oregon oh i see this so this is at the

00:40:50 - 00:41:04 | Speaker 2:

state fair maybe what i saw was something slightly different because i don't think it was a fair situation but it's like all these huge heavy hitters of yeah so maybe they're touring not just doing fairs as well but that's interesting yeah so you're going that's cool oh yeah i'm

00:41:04 - 00:41:41 | Speaker 1:

going you know who i may see down there connor j wells of vancouver washington that's pretty close nice but even closer jay kelly is in portland oregon um so thank you connor and thank you jay for supporting the show maybe i'll see y'all at color me bad probably won't see jenny brown jenny brown's in somerville massachusetts it's a long way to go and i bet you anyway i bet you this This exact crew of folks is coming somewhere near Somerville. So you can catch them when they're in your town, Jenny. And then we have to wrap things up by thanking Christine and Matt Woodward. They're in Renton, Washington.

00:41:42 - 00:41:49 | Speaker 2:

Now, can I ask you a question? Did we thank Patrick Meager? Patrick Marr of Seattle, Washington. Oh, Marr, you said that maybe and I didn't check it off the list.

00:41:49 - 00:42:00 | Speaker 1:

No, I didn't, but I've read Patrick's name before. Oh, okay, gotcha. But in previous years. You're right, Andrew. You're keeping me accountable today And it hurts but I appreciate it

00:42:00 - 00:42:03 | Speaker 2:

But I'm mad that I messed up Patrick's Last name, my apologies

00:42:03 - 00:42:42 | Speaker 1:

But the only reason that I know that Is because I read a Tim Egan book for For fun, Luke? No, I don't read For fun, for the radio Show and it was called The Immortal Irishman and it was About a guy in Montana whose last name was spelled exactly Like Patrick's and it was pronounced Mar And I only learned that from that book So I think Patrick is probably used to People not instinctively knowing how to pronounce Unless Patrick is in one of those families Like Genevieve's where they've just Different branches of the family have decided Different pronunciations on the last name So who knows you might have said Patrick's last name

00:42:42 - 00:42:51 | Speaker 2:

Perfectly correctly Patrick my apologies Or you're welcome I'm not exactly sure I think that sums up most episodes of TBTL

00:42:51 - 00:43:17 | Speaker 1:

maybe that's our apologies or you're welcome hey thank you to all of our daily donors and thank you to everyone who has listened to this episode of the show we are going to be back here tomorrow we have two more summer games uh and uh we're gonna be back here tomorrow with the penultimate edition so please do join us for that in the meantime have a great wednesday also known as a thursday definitely not a tuesday and please remember no mountain too tall and good luck to
