I know what you're probably thinking. I wonder what this man's thoughts are on the garlic bread slash pizza debate. Have you heard about this? You're keeping up with this? If anybody nodded along, you're a liar. Because I'm the one who sparked the debate, and this is my first time going public with it. There was a time, a simpler time, when you could very clearly tell garlic bread from pizza. Garlic bread was a baguette. A few slits cutting it And some garlic butter 65% melted between them I think it all started going downhill When they started making garlic bread the same shape as a pizza Then they came out with cheesy garlic bread This is garlic bread in the shape of a pizza With a bit of cheese That I can take But I was in a restaurant the other day Went down to the garlic bread section of the menu Checking out what's going on Used to be a section reserved for garlic bread matters. Garlic pizza bread. Have you heard of this product? It's a pizza base. Garlic butter. So far, so good. Cheese. I'm okay with that. Tomato sauce. That's a pizza. With too much garlic in it. Seems like you can call anything you want garlic bread these days. TBTL.

00:02:04 - 00:02:09 | Speaker 5:

about what you're saying right now because it's the smartest idea anyone's ever had we have all

00:02:09 - 00:02:17 | Speaker 4:

the facts on this we need we don't need any more facts in the land of truth my friend the man with One fact is the king.

00:02:17 - 00:02:20 | Speaker 2:

All right, they're going to run. See you on the flippy flops.

00:02:23 - 00:03:31 | Speaker 6:

Well, all right. Hello, good morning, and welcome, everyone, to a Tuesday edition of TBTL, the show that just might be too beautiful to live. My name is Luke Burbank. I am your host. I am also currently searching about my computer desktop to try to find my little audio drops here. I kind of messed all of my situation up here because I was wanting to confirm the name of that very funny garlic bread related comedy we heard at the top of the show. That is Garen Noon is the comedian you heard with the, I believe, Irish lilt. Huh, this is really strange. We may be in a situation where I do not have any audio drops for you at the top of the show. So what I will probably do is tell you what we're going to talk about today, and then I'll introduce my good friend Andrew Walsh. And then I'd say about four to five minutes into the show, I'll figure out how to get to the particular screen where my drops are, and then I'll just play them all then.

00:03:31 - 00:03:37 | Speaker 5:

Let's just do this, Luke. I'm going to interrupt you here. Let's just me do the drops. You pause, and I'll try to do a drop.

00:03:38 - 00:03:48 | Speaker 6:

Okay. Okay, great. So we're taking it from the very top. I'm a little sad because, you know, we put a lot of work into sound checking. I found it, Andrew. I found it, but now I kind of like your plan.

00:03:49 - 00:03:51 | Speaker 5:

I know. Do you have access?

00:03:51 - 00:03:55 | Speaker 6:

Do you have ready and quick access to a number? Let's do this.

00:03:55 - 00:03:59 | Speaker 5:

No, no, I was going to do it with my mouth. I was going to imitate the drop.

00:03:59 - 00:04:02 | Speaker 6:

And then after that, I'm going to play the drop I was planning on playing.

00:04:02 - 00:04:15 | Speaker 5:

Okay, this is going to be so bad. Okay, here we go. Ready? All right. Because I don't remember what you played during. This is Andrew, by the way. Hi, everybody. I don't remember what you played during the sound check, so I'm going to be on my toes here. I would be shocked if you did. Okay, here we go.

00:04:15 - 00:04:25 | Speaker 6:

So here we go from the very top of the show. Well, hello, good morning, and welcome, everyone, to a Tuesday edition of TBTL, the show that just might be too beautiful to live.

00:04:25 - 00:04:29 | Speaker 5:

I say, I say, what's up, dog? Ready to laugh and drop till the songs come off?

00:04:29 - 00:04:32 | Speaker 6:

My name is Luke Burbank. I am your host.

00:04:32 - 00:04:34 | Speaker 5:

I say, I say, what's up, dog?

00:04:34 - 00:04:42 | Speaker 6:

Oh, hey, y'all said my name. Coming to you from the beautiful south waterfront of Portland, Oregon.

00:04:43 - 00:04:45 | Speaker 5:

Oh, ma, pa, it's just beautiful.

00:04:46 - 00:04:52 | Speaker 6:

Oh, ma, pa, it's just beautiful. I mean, let's be honest, that was a layup. That one was kind of a layup.

00:04:52 - 00:04:59 | Speaker 5:

The fact that I could think of anything other than your mom saying, what up, dog, is a miracle. This should also be a layup.

00:05:00 - 00:05:23 | Speaker 1:

I don't want to put pressure on you. Here we are at episode 4030 in a collector's series. Let the fun begin. Let the fun begin. Very good. Two for two. You're hot. I'm sweating. Midway through this bit, I realized you had really painted yourself into a corner of having to basically, like, on command, improvise from memory some kind of audio that gets played on the program.

00:05:23 - 00:05:27 | Speaker 2:

I am literally sweating and my glasses are steamed up.

00:05:30 - 00:05:37 | Speaker 1:

Okay, there is a dispute at the Pike Place Market about who gets to use the term Pike Place Market.

00:05:39 - 00:05:43 | Speaker 2:

I was on the toilet pee-peeing, he was on the toilet pee-peeing. We have all pee-peeing, it was great.

00:05:44 - 00:05:47 | Speaker 1:

Oh, it's such, now I regret choosing this drop.

00:05:47 - 00:05:49 | Speaker 2:

Is it too early to get a fish sandwich? Oh, perfect, right.

00:05:50 - 00:06:04 | Speaker 1:

And also, there is a new bit of information, or at least one person's recollection, around the JFK assassination that is throwing the whole sort of Warren Commission report into some amount of question.

00:06:06 - 00:06:10 | Speaker 2:

They entered Carl's World. Sorry, I'm blanked.

00:06:10 - 00:06:24 | Speaker 1:

The past is history. The future is a mystery. This might be how we need to start every show, Andrew. Honestly, you're over-delivering on this. Just a Carl's World reference? How long has it been? I don't know. This is so good.

00:06:24 - 00:06:25 | Speaker 2:

I'm panicking.

00:06:25 - 00:06:42 | Speaker 1:

No, no, you're doing great. And then I was going to mention that, you know, Andrew, you brought up the JFK thing yesterday, saying you had some thoughts on it. And then I said, speaking, I was going to say, speaking of my good friend Andrew Walsh, the longest joining co-bro of the show, maybe best known for his depictions of the tall ships, their grace, their splendor, and all that intricate rigging.

00:06:44 - 00:06:46 | Speaker 2:

You're like the coolest person I've ever met.

00:06:47 - 00:06:52 | Speaker 1:

Close. I'd like to grow up here sometime. He's Andrew Walsh, and he's joining right now. Good morning, my friend.

00:06:52 - 00:06:56 | Speaker 2:

Good morning, Luke. Oh, is my microphone unmuted? Yeah. Hi there, Luke. Good intro.

00:06:57 - 00:08:01 | Speaker 1:

honestly i think that went that was the best really possible outcome considering what i had done andrew was you know i'm i'm here at becca's house because uh i'm trying to go from our recording our program to running over and being on hello rose city portland television so i'm here much closer to where the tv studio is at kgw and i'm also i don't have my normal whole computer setup so i have one screen that i'm working with one computer screen and i had somehow accidentally moved my audio drop screen over to where i don't know if you ever do this to where just the tiniest little tiny like micron of that of that screen if you will of that whatever app was all the way to the left and so i had to i was looking everywhere and usually i should be able to just click on the icon in the dock but it wasn't working so i mean things were really hanging by a thread there but you saved the day that was a very very good save by you my friend it's funny because we're not live

00:08:01 - 00:08:19 | Speaker 2:

like you could have easily like you could have just said oh andrew i don't have my audio ready could we just stop down for a second i could have we wouldn't have even had to listen to the intro again i could have made an edit like people edit their podcasts all the time but for us it was

00:08:19 - 00:09:14 | Speaker 1:

never even an option right never well two things on that okay one one is that i am a little pressed for time this morning um and so i don't know if i was consciously doing this calculation but to stop as we say stop down and then go back and even if we don't listen to the intro just any delay And any starting over would be a potential time issue for me. And then this is the bigger thing. Becca is in the other room. And she's hearing half of this podcast, which is somehow, believe it or not, even worse than hearing the whole podcast. And something about me going, Andrew, can we start over? There would be so much defeat in my voice and so much embarrassment. And just what tiny shred I have left of my dignity regarding my girlfriend would have gone right out the window. It would have whiffed right out the window. So I think that was also why I didn't want to start over.

00:09:15 - 00:09:16 | Speaker 2:

I mean, I saved your relationship. Let's not.

00:09:17 - 00:09:59 | Speaker 1:

Honestly, I don't think that's an overstatement at all. You know who really saved me today, Andrew? A hero. they have this this segment now they do on morning edition called my unsung hero which i have to say is really good in my opinion it's it's from the the production team at hidden brain um which god i'm i'm impressed at how well too beautiful to biz is actually going our little business spin-off but we've got nothing on shankar vedantham i mean that whole hidden brain audio empire is really a going concern but anyway they do these little segments on Morning Edition called My Unsung Hero and they're really lovely

00:10:00 - 00:10:48 | Speaker 2:

Actually, it'll be somebody who I heard one recently where a woman was on her way to a job interview in Washington, D.C., and she was somebody who had some physical limitations and she had taken a fall on her way to this interview. And she was just really embarrassed and, you know, had some, you know, like bleeding and things and just was it was just a really, really bad moment for her. And these two people just swooped in these people, I believe, worked at a parking garage, maybe. that had seen her fall and got her all cleaned up and got her back up and moving into her job interview. And she just wanted to like say thanks to those people that she'll like never meet again. It's like very, I think actually very, very heartwarming, very humanizing stuff. This is what I'm about to, what I'm about to share with you.

00:10:48 - 00:10:49 | Speaker 1:

What is going on? Is everything okay?

00:10:50 - 00:11:13 | Speaker 2:

I think that was bubbles in action. What'd she do? What did she do? Did you hear that? Yes. everything okay is becca okay all i know is she said bubbles fuck and then uh and then i asked she was shutting the door and i said what did she do and then she said nothing i heard the nothing

00:11:13 - 00:11:17 | Speaker 1:

but it didn't sound like nothing that sounded like that's a lot really sounded like something

00:11:17 - 00:11:23 | Speaker 2:

yeah that was like i'm amazed the apartment building is still standing i'm hoping that

00:11:23 - 00:11:28 | Speaker 1:

was worried i know me too i just saved your relationship i can't watch it crumble to dust

00:11:28 - 00:13:44 | Speaker 2:

again you have so much invested in this now what about my relationship with bubbles if i see bubbles fly past the window from the 15th floor of this high rise i'll know that it was something andrew um anyway uh what i'm about to share with you is much less heartwarming than the story of a couple of people coming to someone's aid but somebody did come to my aid in a way today andrew in a certain way i was driving down interstate five this morning coming down here from where i live up in southern washington and i don't know what was going on on i-5 there it was cop city out there i mean every it seemed like every two miles there were just cops set up just speed trapping i don't understand the exactly what the sort of logic or the impulse is why there are i mean have you ever noticed this there are just certain days where you're just like huh they have 25 speed traps going and then other days where you could drive through four states and not run into one i don't know why this was a day of emphasis a morning of emphasis for them but i'm driving i'm i'm north of vancouver washington and i'm coming around a bend and a car coming the other way is just flashing its lights oh yeah i'm in the far left lane and he's in the far i'm i don't know the gender of the person driving their car but the person was in the far left lane and they were in one of those kind of cars that i usually am like i'm not going to probably be friends with this person and what it's not a big truck it's sort of the opposite it's like a car that has a lot of aftermarket kind of mods on it you know what i mean like some kind of a car that yeah it's got some kind of a spoiler type of deal like this is a person who considers themselves to be almost too fast and too furious probably like and that would make sense right that this would be a person who also this person's probably got you know a few speeding tickets under their belt like this is a person i'm i'm completely and totally inventing all this in my mind right but the kind of car this person was driving and the like the the tenacity with which they were flashing their headlights at 7 30 in the morning like i was like this is a this is a person who sees it as us versus the speed trap yeah yeah that's a classic

00:13:44 - 00:13:54 | Speaker 1:

move right you flash your lights i've heard i've heard tell that some police officers will pull you over if they think that you're narking out their speed trap i've seen video of that like

00:13:54 - 00:15:00 | Speaker 2:

body cam video on like tiktok and that to me is like look it's cat and mouse i guess you're allowed to set up your speed trap but we should be allowed to flash our high beams at each other anyway this car comes burning around the corner doing that now here's the thing and this is what makes the story a little bit less compelling if you can believe that um i also had ways going and so i and i also was driving 65 miles an hour i'm you know it wasn't like it would have been a better story if i was going 100 and then i knew to like slam on the brakes i probably wasn't going to get a speeding ticket in this moment but when i tell you that i came around the bend and sitting right there was a motorcycle cop with their radar gun pointed right at my car just the fact that i didn't go into that blindly like just the fact that i was emotionally because i don't care if you're going 20 miles an hour when the cop is pointing that thing at you yeah it is so unsettling it really is there's no like you just feel so singled out and so scrutinized that no amount of like i mean again i was not actually speeding but i was like am

00:15:00 - 00:15:33 | Speaker 1:

is my speedometer broke like like you feel like you're gonna get in trouble regardless of how much you're following the law and the fact that that person in that car that you know were we in a jack-in-the-box parking lot or something and i saw that car pull and i think those are not really people i'm gonna vibe with i just want to say to my unsung hero if you were driving some kind of like nissan lowered nissan maxima on i5 this morning uh and you flashed your headlights at a mazda cx7 thank you you're my unsung hero you're in it together you're in it

00:15:33 - 00:16:41 | Speaker 2:

together that reminds me i mean i have a sort of a i mean maybe this is a stretch but a related story about everybody looking out for each other and that is on the bus luke and so this this is something that genevieve and i talk about sometimes anyway which is just like bus people are in it together and they're looking out for each other like i think this is a universal if you see somebody or people running after a bus that's about to pull away from the bus stop everybody is on the side of those people who are running to catch the bus right and i think the bus driver in most cases if they see the person they are going to stop i think sometimes they just can't and sometimes i think they just simply do not see that person but um when there's somebody chasing down a bus and it's close but then the bus stops or doesn't quite pull away and they get on the bus like i want to just start applauding and honestly sometimes i do but then on the bus itself veves and i went down to the baseball game yesterday i can't remember who won seemed like it was probably a fun game don't know i think it was a tie can't remember don't don't remember any rage blackouts on my end um but anyway uh we're taking the e-line all the way down to pioneer square and i've talked about the e-line before it's near our house i want you to

00:16:41 - 00:16:46 | Speaker 1:

write a sort of i don't know cole porter-esque song about the e-line at some point oh i thought

00:16:46 - 00:16:53 | Speaker 2:

talk about it so much on the show more of like a book like a um sure who wrote uh gosh how about

00:16:53 - 00:17:11 | Speaker 1:

like robert how about uh who wrote the books about the the the was it robert well robert moses i think was that was the guy who sort of decided where the like bqe and the big roadways in new york were gonna go and they decimated neighborhoods and all this stuff and then i'm trying to think of who the

00:17:11 - 00:17:28 | Speaker 2:

biographer of robert moses was but that was robert caro was it who wrote work who wrote who was the who was the journalist who went around and talked to everybody about their jobs and then i thought he wrote oh studs turkle yeah what about a more of a studs turkle sort of narrative maybe i don't

00:17:28 - 00:17:43 | Speaker 1:

know i have an update on the noise by the way no what is it uh worse it's almost worst case scenario a pot that was given to becca as a present now lies shattered upon the floor it's shatter oh so

00:17:43 - 00:17:59 | Speaker 2:

like a because of bubbles burbank like a planting not not a pot to cook yeah yeah bubbles is gonna have to work that off and i don't that's true that was actually so i thought i thought it was like pots and pans falling to the ground i thought it was you know noisy but okay but it actually did

00:17:59 - 00:18:28 | Speaker 1:

break something huh yes that was so usually when something breaks it doesn't actually sound yeah that loud that's usually like you know the sound of again yeah some a frying pan and a pot getting knocked off of the like dish rack or something no but that was that was the i mean i guess the silver lining is if we ever need a fully andrew just an absolute titanic yeah destruction of something we do now have that on tape yeah i bet small comfort to becca that really was a hell of

00:18:28 - 00:18:39 | Speaker 2:

a sound i mean that really was radio theater this is becoming an interesting that for a for a random tuesday episode of tbtl this is really becoming a show for the and by the way i had all of this

00:18:39 - 00:18:55 | Speaker 1:

fanfare yesterday around finally coming to you from the majona hill studio oh right yeah perched high above the muddy columbia and you know that lasts for one total day and now i'll be here the next three days and i'll be in new york next week and so i hope we all enjoyed the relative calm of

00:18:55 - 00:19:24 | Speaker 2:

the madrona hill studio yesterday anyway um so i'm taking the e-line with genevieve yesterday it's a long bus ride and i've described this bus line before it goes up and down aurora you get a lot of scruffy characters in there right a lot of people who are struggling a lot of people who are probably on their on their on their own journeys um you know some young skater stumbling around with a whole key chain full of wrenches coming down from from his pants i was wondering what The purpose of those wrenches were, I assumed.

00:19:24 - 00:19:25 | Speaker 1:

Maybe get a Crescent wrench.

00:19:25 - 00:19:27 | Speaker 2:

I was thinking no good. That could be many.

00:19:27 - 00:19:29 | Speaker 1:

A Crescent would replace a lot of those.

00:19:29 - 00:20:00 | Speaker 2:

You know, I suggested it. How'd that go? But I would say, like, even in this hall of Motley Fool's, this bus, everybody looks out for each other. Like, some guy gets on the bus. You know, like, some young guy gets on the bus with crutches. He looks like, you know, kind of one of those skater guys as well, potentially up to no good. but you know let let judge not lest you be judged but he gets on and like some young woman sitting next day

00:20:00 - 00:20:40 | Speaker 1:

him uh who looks like she walks a very different uh walk of life you know what i mean and she like compared to him who's very scruffy she like without even thinking about it just like pushes down the seat for him to sit in it um and like i'm trying to think there was another person who was a little bit oh well there was one guy who was you know whatever this is not a very nice story but there's a young woman sitting on the bus and this guy from the back kind of starts hovering around her really close getting in her personal space and he was a a really um dirty looking guy and it was an uncomfortable situation but then some other guy was just sort of like just like very casually kind of waved him away without creating any kind of a scene was this

00:20:40 - 00:20:45 | Speaker 2:

all on this one trip to the baseball game yesterday i think every example i've given so

00:20:45 - 00:21:31 | Speaker 1:

far might have been just on on the way home i mean the e-line is a bit of a trip i mean that's the thing people are a little bit moss isley's space bus really it really is a little bit like that but it's interesting i'm doing a bad job of saying and also trying to watch my words so as to not paint anybody in in the wrong life but also like it really there's a leveler there where everybody just sort of is like we're all in this together and it like even when there needed to be a little bit of like casual regulation it was just like all eyes on this situation and it was just sort of like i don't know the the e-line can can be definitely a trip but in more ways than one but it does sort of feel like bus people are just looking out for bus people uh-huh i hear that now

00:21:31 - 00:24:01 | Speaker 2:

a bus person and by that i mean the driver of a bus almost hit me this morning oh you're in he was like that guy's not a bus person he would never get on the e-line take him down bars i was really quite shocked driver impression i was shocked because it was um it was like i don't it was like 6 30 in the morning i was doing my little jog around lake sacajawea and a bus with no people on it pulled up to a four-way stop that i was jogging through the crosswalk and i saw the bus driver kind of looking towards maybe to his right and i think he saw somebody in a city vehicle that maybe he knew longview washington i don't think you know i don't think it's unlikely that most of the people that work either for the you know transit or the city might know each other so he kind of like looked at this other person and and then waved at him or something and then but he was stopped at the crosswalk he's a bus where's he got to be at 6 30 in the morning there's no one on the bus it's not cool when people that are driving their you know their civilian vehicles are are not being thoughtful about crosswalks but i sort of get it a little bit like you're late for work you're trying to get your kid to school things are crazy you know you're not drunk you're passing snacks and whipping ass this guy had this guy's a professional job is to not hit joggers and i had this thought he's not observing me as much as i would like i haven't got eye contact from this guy but he's a bus driver he should be like have you ever been behind a bus it's frustrating how careful they are they're supposed to be that careful and sure enough as i as i pull like you know not even even with the bus but i'm like two steps in front of the bus he lets off the brake it starts rolling forward and like smack the front of the bus geez yeah i mean he was you know thankfully you can't gun those things like it would have just been probably like a gentle bumping but i was like i thwacked the front of the bus and i was like dude and then like i pointed the crosswalk and i was like very i was i didn't throw any profanity out but maybe i did i might have said what the f i'm not sure but it was like i was that for some reason hurt me emotionally more than a normal just civilian driving their car being kind of careless because I'm like, you were driving a bus. Did he make eye contact?

00:24:01 - 00:24:02 | Speaker 1:

Was he like, oop?

00:24:03 - 00:24:08 | Speaker 2:

Well, that was when I got mad. So I thwacked the front of the bus, and I looked at him. I kind of put my arms out like, hey, man, what's up?

00:24:08 - 00:24:09 | Speaker 1:

Yeah, like, what's up?

00:24:09 - 00:24:42 | Speaker 2:

Yeah. And I expected him to just go, oh, like, hand up, like, ah, gosh, I didn't see you. By the way, at that point, all would be forgiven from my perspective. Like, we've all done it. I would not have even been mad. But what he didn't do was go like, ah, my bad, dude. And that's what maybe when what the F escaped my escaped my, you know, like I just thought, man, that is like the pretty much number one rule of driving that bus is like if you're at a crosswalk at a jogging path, you might want to be extra careful on if there's any joggers in front of your bus.

00:24:42 - 00:24:59 | Speaker 1:

I'm laughing there because the my bad reminds me of something that I watched online and I heard them talk about on the Levitard show yesterday, but I'm not going to bring it up now. I'm going to if we can remember, I'll bring it up later in the show. But I want to say a couple of things related to the story. Number one, you should see my oh, my God, I'm so sorry face like as a dry.

00:25:00 - 00:25:13 | Speaker 2:

I mean, I have an angry face, too, but I also have a, oh, my God, like, that is on me face. And when it's on me, like, I let the person know, like, if it's a pedestrian or another. Did I say pedestrian? If it's pedestrian.

00:25:13 - 00:25:28 | Speaker 1:

I don't know, but if somebody just needle dropped the show and they heard you say, you should check out my, oh, my God, that's on me face. I just feel like there's a whole other way to read that statement. And I want to, like, make sure people know we're talking about traffic stuff here.

00:25:28 - 00:28:28 | Speaker 2:

Let me just Google that. oh my um so anyway so yeah i know that face that you're looking for like oh my gosh you didn't see somebody in the crosswalk or for a split second you didn't see a cyclist and you might have scared them by putting on your turn signal and they think you're going to turn into their lane or something like that like because i consider myself a conscientious driver in person when it is on me like i really want that person to know like i'm sorry secondly cars one of my pet peeves as a pedestrian is cars that will like line up in traffic let's say there's a red light up ahead and the traffic is starting to pile up but the cars don't leave space for crosswalks there's one like that near my house where people when the traffic lines up they just pull right up into a crosswalk and stop there and i will tap their car i will not if i'm by myself genevieve has mentioned to me before that she does not like that move which is understandable but like that is such a bullshit move because people are just have their they're driving around their heads up their ass and they don't even realize especially in my neighborhood that anybody would deign to walk thirdly i forgot to tell you about another story of of bus people looking out for bus people on the way to the game we're maybe i don't know maybe 10 10 minutes away from the final stop of this bus line where it's going to drop us off in pioneer square then maybe it's another 10 minute walk to the ballpark and uh vives and i have been sort of like kind of accidentally eavesdropping on this guy and his kid behind us and it's just like the most charming thing this guy as a kid and he's like yeah you want to look out the window and he's like oh yeah i guess it's not the best he's like i guess third avenue isn't isn't isn't the best scenery around here but hey it's better than nothing we call this the blade i know it really was an interesting perspective but like the guy was just like so level-headed about it he wasn't like oh turn away you know poverty turn away and then say Seattle is dying he didn't say Seattle is dying he was just like this he was like the kind of parent that I would hope to be just like taking his kid on the a little kid too you know like a kid who was wasn't you the only word the kid was able to say was we want we want every now and then and it was very very um charming and I couldn't tell if the kid was saying window I want to look out the window or we want like a siren either way is it possible the kid was a british ambulance the kid was a 40 year old british ambulance and it wasn't a kid at all all of that is to say i'm sort of listening to that conversation behind me and then there's some guy kind of in front of us um and at some point i even noticed this too we go through a bus stop and there's a guy at the bus stop outside who's wearing a mariner's jersey bus comes as the holly racing bus comes bus stops bus goes he stays and um he's still at the bus stop i'm like in the back of my head i think to myself that's interesting that mariners fan didn't get on this bus to go to the ballpark but that was just like a tickle of a thought in the back of my head but that made this other guy who's actually on the bus and has been riding with us for a while go up to the bus

00:28:28 - 00:28:50 | Speaker 2:

driver who's now driving again and moving and saying hey doesn't this bus go to the ballpark Where do I get off to go to the ballpark? Now, I can't see. I don't know if you can hear that, but sorry about the sirens if you can. It's that goddamn kid again. You know what? He's following me around. Wow, that is really loud. Hold on. I'm going to bring down my mic for a second.

00:28:51 - 00:28:57 | Speaker 1:

Okay. I'd like to take this opportunity to apologize to Becca over her flower pot.

00:28:57 - 00:29:47 | Speaker 2:

I didn't want to scare anybody. So anyway, I can't see the bus driver, but clearly there's a language barrier between this guy who's trying to ask the bus driver where to get off for the ballpark. And then he started, I know there's a language barrier because at some point he's saying, you know, baseball, and he's imitating swinging a bat. So I'm like, okay, yeah. But then like right as he's starting to do that, like the guy behind me with the kid yells at him or kind of, you know, he's not that far away. He's kind of like, hey, man, it's like it's the last stop on the line. And then Genevieve jumps in and is like, yeah, yeah, we're all getting off there. you can just follow us or whatever and the guy's like thanks so anyway another example of just bus people like once you once you set foot on that e-line you're all in it together even once you get off that e-line and try to make your way to a mariners game well when you aren't riding the

00:29:47 - 00:30:34 | Speaker 1:

bus andrew you are sometimes renting cars and we ended yesterday's show with you mentioning that during the break when you were doing a little bit of traveling you had a car rental situation and Like, I don't- I don't want to sound like I'm infantilizing you or like I'm giving you grief, but you're definitely a person in my experience who – I don't want to say shouldn't rent cars, but I think that the amount of anxiety it generates for you both in the getting of the car, the having of the car, and the returning of the car, I almost feel like it might be a net loss for you just based on a couple of events. Maybe those are outliers, but like I'm thinking of when we were in Colorado and you had that car and then there was a nick in the windshield, which really had you stressed out and stuff like this is something.

00:30:34 - 00:30:36 | Speaker 2:

I mean, that all was one event in my defense.

00:30:36 - 00:30:39 | Speaker 1:

So you're saying that that's not typically your experience.

00:30:39 - 00:30:45 | Speaker 2:

No, I would say, I mean, that's kind of why I was even going to make a joke like, you know, we're halfway into the show. Maybe we just skip this for now because it isn't embarrassing.

00:30:46 - 00:30:47 | Speaker 1:

If you want to skip it, we totally.

00:30:48 - 00:30:48 | Speaker 2:

No, no.

00:30:48 - 00:30:52 | Speaker 1:

What you're tapping into is what makes me bubbles to shatter another plant around here.

00:30:52 - 00:31:12 | Speaker 2:

What you're tapping into is what makes it an interesting story and why I was sheepish and why I didn't leave you a voicemail when I was going to call for advice the other day. But let me ask you this only and I don't know why it really matters, but we're we're a half hour into the show. Should we pause, thank the donors of the day and then come back and make this the top story or hold this till tomorrow?

00:31:12 - 00:31:27 | Speaker 1:

No, let's make this a top story. This is what this is what I want to talk about or at least hear about the JFK shooting that happened months ago. That's got plenty of time to marinate I want to hear about what happened to you At the Avis, so let's do that

00:31:27 - 00:31:40 | Speaker 2:

Let's go ahead and thank those

00:31:40 - 00:32:07 | Speaker 1:

Daily donors These incredibly generous Supportive, loving people Are donating to TBTL That's right, this is an independent business This is a small little company That features me and Andrew And one John Sklaroff That's what we got going on And it is only here And only happening because of donors like John Williams In Midwest City, Oklahoma

00:32:07 - 00:32:22 | Speaker 2:

And because we are so grateful for your donation We are not going to make fun of the name Midwest City And say things like They really just phoned in that name, didn't they? We're not, I'm saying, Luke, no, I'm saying we're not going to say anything like that.

00:32:22 - 00:32:35 | Speaker 1:

We want to thank Eileen Gormley from Northeast City, Massachusetts. That's not true. Eileen is in Renton, Washington. Indeed. I thought you were going to talk about John Williams' name being similar to the composer.

00:32:35 - 00:32:41 | Speaker 2:

Yeah, you got that too, but no, no, I wouldn't. I'm sure John has heard that many times in his life.

00:32:41 - 00:33:07 | Speaker 1:

Thank you, John. We appreciate you. Thanks also to Eileen. Thanks to Nancy Rohar in Tacoma, Washington. Thanks to Michael Sean Gardell out there in Arlington, Virginia, where someone once tried to shoot me with a pellet gun, but I'm not holding Michael Sean responsible for that. That's unrelated. It might have been that same bus driver. I have to assume. I pray it's unrelated. God, what a twist.

00:33:07 - 00:33:09 | Speaker 2:

What a bus driver.

00:33:09 - 00:33:16 | Speaker 1:

What an M. Night Shyamalan-esque twist if Michael Sean Gardell was somehow in league with that person who tried to shoot me with a pellet gun.

00:33:16 - 00:33:36 | Speaker 2:

Oh, no, I meant that if the pellet gun was the if the pellet gun shooter was actually the bus driver. And it turns out there's a whole narrative to your life that you just can't see. But in the super cut, we could prove that there's been somebody trying to kill you since 2008 and they've been following you around and you've been evading death and you don't even know it.

00:33:36 - 00:34:04 | Speaker 1:

I saw something on line the other day that was putting forward the theory that in Groundhog Day, Ned Needlenose Ryerson is the devil and Bill Murray is in hell. and it starts with him saying um that watch that first step it's a doozy and when his foot goes into that water and steven tobolowski aka ned ryerson says that and then they had constructed this actually fairly consistent sort of universe and an explanation in which he's he's entered

00:34:04 - 00:34:15 | Speaker 2:

hell at that point do you remember how the end is resolved though i mean how he gets out of hell yeah because people don't usually get out of hell right i didn't watch the whole it was a 20 second

00:34:15 - 00:34:19 | Speaker 1:

video on tiktok i didn't have the time i watched 10 seconds of the 20 seconds yeah do you know

00:34:19 - 00:34:44 | Speaker 2:

that i have a fan theory that um groundhog day is in the same universe as beethoven's big break i'm just looking up tobolowski films and beethoven's big break which i assume is that with the dog named beethoven yes a 2008 uh uh i guess sequel to that beethoven movie apparently he's in that it's just funny because tobolowski of course famously is in all kinds of films

00:34:44 - 00:35:00 | Speaker 1:

Yeah, he is. That guy has really had quite the career. He was Stanley Jenkins in Memento. Yeah, he's been in a range of things. Hey, you know who's been, who's listened to a range?

00:35:00 - 00:36:14 | Speaker 3:

of tbtl broadcasts day adley patoosik out there in hamden connecticut thank you day adley thanks for your support all these years we really do appreciate you thanks for thanks for uh transferring over thanks for crossing over to this new this new version of tbtl i mean when i see a name on here like dadley's that we've seen you know for years on the previous uh roles as it were when we were at 8 p.m., it all means a lot to us, but it reminds me of just how long-suffering and sweet some of these folks are, that they all said, like, oh, yeah, okay, let me stop this one thing, and let me, all right, go over here and start this new thing. Like, it's a very active, it's a huge ask. It's a huge ask from us, and it feels to me like a proactive form of telling us, you like us, you really, really like us, because, you know, before there could have been a lot of people that just forgot they were giving money to TBTL, or just kind of like, I don't don't know we're like how do i want to take the time to go cancel this but this is everybody on these roles andrew even like harrison uh bell in burke virginia uh these are all people that proactively like us we know that within the last four months they took initiative and they made an

00:36:14 - 00:36:44 | Speaker 2:

active decision to say tbtl it's good and i mean not to spend too much time on this but But even if we were behind a paywall and people were like, I don't know, maybe, sure, I don't want the show to go away. I want access to it, maybe. But it would be so easy just to skip the donations because you can still get the show for free. We don't put anything behind the paywall. And so to actively say, no, I just want to make sure it's there for the future. And I also want to make sure it's there for the other listeners who can't give or what have you.

00:36:44 - 00:37:04 | Speaker 3:

If you would consider donating your car or boat to TBTL, your unused car or boat, and also consider putting us in your estate plans, because I owe Becca one antique flower pot right now, and I need a cash injection into the TBTL business accounts badly.

00:37:06 - 00:37:19 | Speaker 1:

4-1-4-T-B-T-L. 4-1-4-T-B-T-L. 414-TBTL It's in the 206 Thanks, Jim.

00:37:20 - 00:37:45 | Speaker 3:

Oh, that's quality. We've got to get more of those jingles going. Those are always fun. Thank you to all of our donors today for making TBTL possible. We really do appreciate you. Hello and welcome to Top Story. All right, Andrew. So unless you've reconsidered during the reading of the Daily Donors, what what happened with the rental car?

00:37:45 - 00:38:12 | Speaker 2:

No. And I hope this hasn't been built up too much, but you are putting your finger on the sort of interesting part of the story. Or the only reason it is a story is because I don't have a lot of experience renting cars. I think I have one experience renting a car, and that is when I rented a car to meet you out in Denver and I rented the wrong car. And then once we were out there, you fought to swap out for a better car for me on Memorial Day weekend or Labor Day weekend or whatever it was.

00:38:12 - 00:38:15 | Speaker 3:

A heavily pregnant supervisor after Avis or whatever.

00:38:15 - 00:39:19 | Speaker 2:

You wouldn't take no for an answer while I drove in wearing a shirt that said, okay. But anyway, so I have very little experience with that. You know, there was a time, and I think this is maybe a way of setting this up. There was a time when a while back when like kind of booking airline tickets would be the same for me. You know, I'm talking like 10 years ago or probably 20 years ago. I didn't have any experience in doing that. So sitting behind a computer and dialing up old Travelocity or whatever it is, like I remember like I remember just having a lot of orbits and having having a lot of anxiety around getting airline tickets and rechecking the dates a million times. And, you know, because also, especially back then, this was a huge chunk of my paycheck. And if you make one mistake and there's all these warnings, no refund, whatever, you know, obviously, I'm 46 now. I've flown plenty. I've booked plenty of my own flight. So it ain't that big of a thing for me. But I still have not rented many cars. And I think that's what it is. It's just sort of an experience thing. Obviously, you're the complete opposite. You are somebody who I think you've probably rented and returned three cars today just to prove you can.

00:39:19 - 00:39:25 | Speaker 3:

I traded one in in, let's see, Hazel Dell.

00:39:25 - 00:39:59 | Speaker 2:

I traded one in in North Vancouver and then one in in South Vancouver because in Hazeldale they're worried about the cars not coming back so they have to be two way rentals I believe anyway so all of that is to say I had to take a trip uh last week and I knew it was I I this trip was on my radar but I was not doing a lot of planning ahead for it um I just sort of like it was sort of like this this vague calendar date I'm like eh late September or whatever or I'm sorry early September and so like in booking my flight I was I think uncharacteristically kind of chill and last minute about it. I booked it a couple of weeks in advance.

00:40:00 - 00:40:36 | Speaker 1:

maybe which i'm sure to you is not super last minute but for for a trip like you know like i'm sure it'll all work out i think i booked my hotel room maybe two days before i left and this whole time i was thinking like i don't know if i really need to rent a car for this little trip i'm taking i was going to visit some family somewhere and i was not going to ohio by the way for for what it's worth um and so i was i was honestly thinking like oh i can probably just take ubers and lifts everywhere like i'm fine with that did i just hear a cat yeah it was me trying to there's me homer simpsoning the bart simpson that is bubbles oh okay so so bubbles is now in there with you

00:40:36 - 00:40:46 | Speaker 2:

she's roaming free between the living room she's in so much does she know she's in trouble she's in so much i just tried to tell her with my eyes yeah and she didn't that response was her being

00:40:46 - 00:43:45 | Speaker 1:

like cool it old man what me worry yeah anyway so you know me luke i'm not a huge fan of driving anyway if i can you know pay somebody to drive me around via uber or lyft i prefer to do that anyway um but then like literally the day before i'm leaving i or no i'm sorry maybe it was two days before i'm leaving i realized oh no no i definitely am going to need to rent a car for this trip and so it's um i'm leaving on monday mid-morning and it's sunday evening and i'm coming home and i'm going to pack my bags it's a short trip so it's not a you know i'm not super in my head about it too much but I also just sort of want to get it out of the way it's kind of like my last Sunday before I before I take this trip and I'm at home and I like Sundays I like puttering surprise surprise I like puttering around but Sundays are usually the day that I make some sort of a dinner or whatever Sunday evening just sort of has a feel for me I always come back from my volunteer gig sort of in a certain nice mood and ready to sort of like kind of soft land the weekend sort of and i was like i just want to get this packing out of the way and i guess i got to rent a car now but you know the hotel took literally five minutes the booking a plane took probably seven minutes like just sit down quickly and rent a car but i am also like i also don't have just like kind of um a lot of context for renting a car i don't know what a good rate is you know and genevieve is is not here at home and she usually if we're traveling together she always rents the car which is why I don't have much experience in here um and so I don't have any kind of um reference point for what I should be looking for so I do go on Travelocity because that's what I use to like kind of book my airline tickets I'm like I don't know let's see what they have for uh for car deals and I see whatever pops up first and I couldn't even see the name of the rental company they were suggesting but it was a rate of about 19 a day and unlimited mileage i'm like okay so that's a baseline for me but i don't want to do this through travelocity booking things through a third-party website just adds a layer of complication i don't think you really get any deals there so i'll just you're totally right yeah so i'm like okay so i went to travelocity to get a baseline and it gave me that as a baseline and i didn't pay that much attention again i'm sort of in a hurry that's sort of the point here I'm like, this this isn't rocket science. Let's just get this over with and get on with my Sunday night. So then I bop over and I'm thinking of you. I'm thinking of my friend, the wizard, the wizard Burbank. And that's Avis. Right. And that's what they call their reward program. The wizard program. I'm not a wizard, but I'm like, OK, I know basically what this is going to cost. It's going to be about 20 bucks a day before taxes and everything. The total should be about, I think, whatever the thing was, I think 90 bucks for about three or three and a half days of a rental. So that's what I'm thinking. So I book directly with Alamo online. I think I even pay in advance.

00:43:45 - 00:44:07 | Speaker 1:

I know I do because maybe you could save a little money if you pay in advance. I'm like, okay, boom, boom, boom. And then I get my confirmation and it says, good, you have your one-day rental for $90. And I'm just like, I put in the wrong date. I was supposed to put Monday through Thursday, but it just defaulted to Tuesday. And this is kind of like back in the day, this is what I was so afraid of ordering airline tickets online.

00:44:07 - 00:44:11 | Speaker 2:

This is giving me anxiety because it's exactly what you're trying to avoid.

00:44:11 - 00:45:29 | Speaker 1:

Right. But I'm also like, I'm being very, I'm being, I'm trying to be cavalier about this. I'm just like, it's not, that's not rocket science. Like whatever, rent a car. But then I see, and it did say like when I, when I hit the button, it's like no refunds or whatever, but I see, Oh, you know, I just rented a car for basically a day and it's like $90 total with taxes and everything. So I'm like, Oh, I don't know what to do about this. I call it by the way. We're not even to the, we're not even to the tense part of the story yet. we're nowhere even near the the tension that's gonna pop up in a little bit but um to not belabor this too much i call alamo they are super nice i get some customer service representative who is just super nice and but it's also sort of reading from a script and it's a little bit like a little bit oh i don't want to say too bubbly because she she was nice and very helpful but also like a little bit too excited when she's like do you have Thank you.

00:45:00 - 00:45:11 | Speaker 2:

triple a are you are costco members she's like listing all these ways to maybe find me a better deal for a three-day trip because i i explained to her that i so they're able to untangle this

00:45:11 - 00:46:01 | Speaker 1:

because if i can just interject one very quick thing one of the great elements of renting cars is they are not allowed to or at least they do not hold you responsible to take the reservation to use the reservation if you have not paid up front so but i did pay up front yeah well that's what i was going to say so in this case she was untangling for you but just generally speaking this is really more for people that might be hearing this like one of the things about the rental car industry that's different than the hotel industry or the airline industry is you can make a reservation right now at like avis or alamo or any of these places and you could not show up for the reservation and they don't charge you anything they would like to charge you but they know that if one of them started doing it then no one would use that particular provider so that is a kind of a weird quirk of rental cars just to throw that out there generally speaking

00:46:01 - 00:46:22 | Speaker 2:

and so in this case and some of these some of these facts we're gonna have to clean up a little bit later or or maybe explain a little bit later but go with me on these prices for now what happens is again i think i i'm starting off with sort of a spoiler alert a wrong baseline for what a daily rental should be because i just saw oh it's about 20 bucks a day and that was probably fox rental

00:46:22 - 00:46:26 | Speaker 1:

car where you were probably going to have to like it was not i'll tell you who it was in a second

00:46:26 - 00:49:24 | Speaker 2:

that's going to come into this yes yes so i'm like okay so baseline this should be 20 a day i accidentally booked a car for one day for 90 that's no good i call alamo i say hey listen i made a big mistake i i thought i was booking this for three days for 90 bucks i thought that was a good deal um if this is like you're going to be triple the price to get it through thursday like i can't afford that um can you know and she's like well let's do this i'll put punch this in and she's kind of making it i'm gonna really do you a big favor here let's see what we can work out i'm like no i'm not triple a no i'm not a senior citizen no i'm not this and she's like costco i'm like yeah i'm a member of costco she doesn't even ask to prove it i could have said i'm i could have said i'm a senior citizen who belongs to triple a and runs costco but anyway she's like okay well with your costco discount i have some really great news for you mr walsh we can do this for 181 dollars um and and honestly like yeah because it would be pick up the car monday about midday and return the car thursday around the same time right and in my head though that's way more than i thought it should be but it's kind of ballpark i'm realizing later but anyway i'm like ah you know what that's just so much more than i thought it was going to be can we just cancel this i know they said no refunds but can we just cancel the whole thing she's like let me look into this boom boom boom yes sir you know looking forward to working with you again in the future but you have a total refund you know and i already see the email come in i'm like okay great service from alamo but now and all my money's back we're reset whole new ball game luke um and now i'm gonna need to rent a car though like when julio hit that home run in the bottom of the exactly whole new ball game so anyway um so then i go back to out to um travelocity i'm like well it really does look like whatever that deal on Travelocity was pretty good 20 bucks a day with some taxes or whatever is coming into about 90 bucks for a Monday through Thursday rental starting to realize that's probably a pretty good deal so I go back to Travelocity and I've again I'm just trying to get this over with I just want to make some soup or something and so I'm like let's be honest play some darts play well they're not mutually exclusive making soup and playing it's a curious new arty way of playing darts that i'm working on but anyway i uh so i go and i just i'm like bing bing bing i do it through travelocity i'm like there i just booked it again i had to pay in advance but i got a good deal on this thing but i'm like but what is this company i'm renting from and i'm like why doesn't it say and then i look oh it does say it's just a weird logo and i didn't recognize it and it's something called new n u rental company and now i've already paid now i've paid about 90 so this is about half the price of what alamo was gonna charge me but now i'm like this is 90 okay paid in advance when i get to the airport at least i have a car now it's done i can think about soup and darts but then i'm like what the hell is new n u and i

00:49:24 - 00:52:16 | Speaker 2:

start googling reviews luke never in my life of googling reviews has anything been so one-sided terrible reviews i mean the word scam came up in almost every review it was all one or one and a half star out of five reviews i'm talking on google reviews i'm talking on yelp reviews Just the umlau is a red flag. I'm looking at their logo. It's knee. I was like, I'm a husk. Oscar do fan. This should work well for me. I'm a Motley Crue fan. So, Luke, I'm not joking. I mean, I don't I don't have them in front of me now. This story would probably be better, although unfortunately much longer if I had these reviews in front of me. But I cannot stress enough. There were no good reviews. And I was read as scrolling, scrolling, scrolling. Some of the complaints were at first I'm just looking at the company in general. Then I start looking at the one specifically in the city that i'm renting from and some people are really um upset because they won't rent to locals for some complicated reason they apparently there's some theft among among locals so they only rent to people who are flying in a lot of people were angry about that but that doesn't really affect me so i'm trying so hard to not worry about this but also this is a trip where it's kind of like i kind of need to i need to make sure that this goes without a hitch Like, I just need to get this car. I just whatever. So I'm I'm looking at these reviews and I'm starting to kind of panic. I'm just like everybody is saying you're going to go there. They're not in the car rental place. I get this email from the company confirming it. And it says, hey, when you get to the airport, take a tram to the rental car area. Then when you're in the rental car area, do not enter the rental car area. You will see an outback steakhouse. Yes, you will see an angry-looking bus driver sharpening a stick with a knife for some reason. Take that tram to this other place. You can also just take an Uber or a Lyft if you want. Here is our address, and here is our phone number. And I look it up, and this place is about two and a half miles away from the airport. And every review I'm reading is just like, they're going to try to charge you for the shuttle ride. I don't know if that's true or not. I only saw one person say that. it says they are going to try to upsell you on everything they are going to insist that they don't have the car that you want but they're going to so they're going to give you a different one and then they're going to charge you later for it they're going to say you had dogs in the car when you did not they are like the whole thing sounded like everybody just said this is a scam avoided at all costs like some of them were long stories from trip advisor let me just say one thing some of them were like really long stories and others were just like literally five words

00:52:16 - 00:52:39 | Speaker 1:

that said broad don't do it like every single review from trip advisor number uh one star not worth the hassle uh from trip advisor one star scam artists from trip advisor one star buyer beware i think the best review they have on this is two stars from jim in waterborough maine it is

00:52:39 - 00:54:11 | Speaker 2:

okay this is the most jim can really roll with the punches jim is pretty cool cat um so yeah and the ones i was looking at for the specific airport were just like horror stories just like and you can just tell like and again i understand that reviews are going to attract two kind two types of people those who are very angry about their experience and those who really love their experience but i didn't see any of the peaks i didn't see any of the five stars that said what a great find or whatever and now i'm thinking i kind of have this somewhat stressful trip i got to take anyway and now i'm arriving and i'm like already i'm like okay well i'm definitely not taking the shuttle i'll take a car out there but then it's sort of eating at me more and more and and that's when i think i at some point i called you just because i was like i know this is very look upable but i was just like somebody tell me a baseline somebody tell me what is reasonable you know and at this point i'm starting to realize oh that alamo might not have been the best deal of the century but that's reasonable taxes fees 180 bucks few days i'm not a wizard at the airport cars are at the airport like it's a brand that i know and that i can trust you know i'm just like i made such a mistake so now i've already spent 108 or no i'm sorry i spent 90 got 90 back from alamo now i've already spent 90 on this company and then afterwards started reading these reviews and then i'm like okay well it is what it is you'll work it out you're an adult so then I start packing which is generous and then I start packing my bags and I'm like just get on with your sundae but I'm like I can't this is driving me bananas I'm just like I keep on seeing the word it's like it's like a cartoon right the word scam that's just going around on

00:54:11 - 00:54:15 | Speaker 1:

like a ticker in my brain loading through every time you close your eyes it's just like I'm just

00:54:15 - 00:56:21 | Speaker 2:

like this isn't I can't deal with this right now I can't I can't deal with this so I'm like you know what they did send an email confirmation with their address and a direct phone number to the local office i'm like they're already there's all these you know references to these being scam artists as you just quoted directly i'm like there's no way i'm getting my money back from these folks but why don't i just call the number that is directly to the office of the local of the local rental agency and just see maybe i get somebody on the phone maybe it's my lucky day you know so i call somebody picks up right away says i'm on with another customer puts me on hold for a little bit i'm just like from that like two seconds of talking to this person i'm trying to figure out it's your lucky day who they are USB flash drive in the parking lot Can I trust this person? Are they already Are they just kind of licking Their lips as they get ready to Take more of my money? Like, I don't know And I'm just like, hey I accidentally made a reservation I didn't mean to It was an accident. I know they say no refunds But is there any way I can cancel this? I just Booked it like less than an hour ago Can I cancel it and get my money back? And the person's like, oh, okay, yeah, let me see Did you do it through a third party app? I'm like, yes And they're like, well, let me just see they put me on hold for quite some time and as i'm on hold i'm like well i'm on hold for a while they didn't just blow me off like i'm starting to feel kind of good like they are looking like maybe there's something they can do for me and then they come back and they say yep okay i was able to do that no problem i was able to cancel it and i'm like okay well can i get confirmation that i'm getting my money back that was a big part of this i'm like yep yep you already got the email i'm like yeah but this email doesn't have a doesn't have a receipt attached and then they just say something really quickly and then I'm just like bye like I don't know I don't think they hung up on me but it just sort of felt like they were done with the conversation and I got this email can sort of confirming my well confirming that I tried to cancel it but it sort of said we understand that this isn't going to work right for you we have somebody expediting this right now and it was just like this weird vague language that didn't say thank you so much and here's your

00:56:21 - 00:56:26 | Speaker 1:

money back it was like have canceled your reservation and refunded your money those are

00:56:26 - 00:58:04 | Speaker 2:

the words you want to be exactly it's like somebody will be in touch with you within 21 business day or something like that i'm like son of a gun and i'm already on my bank account and i see that the alamo charge was posted and the alamo charge was returned and now i'm seeing new has already you know the charge is there new um but the charge has not come back and now i'm thinking and again it's $90. This isn't, I'm not 23 years old right now. Like when I was booking my first airline tickets and that felt like it was, you know, life or death money to me or make it or break it money to me. It's like, I can absorb a $90 hit if need be. I'll be mad about it. It'll suck, but don't let this, don't let this define you as a friend once told me when I was going through a hard time. And so I'm like, shit though, am I going to get my money back? I don't like the way they sped up the conversation at the end of my phone call i don't like the vagueness of this email i got i don't like the way that my money was clearly returned by alamo immediately but this is still just sitting there pending and um i'm like okay well for now first of all i said alamo a second ago i meant avis but what i did next was i did call i dialed up alamo or i i think i just looked them up online and i booked a car i didn't pay in advance i'm just like okay i got a car for about 180 bucks from alamo i'm like back there now and i'll just pay when i when i show up but that feels good at least i have a car waiting for me at the airport and if i'm scammed out of 90 bucks i'm scammed out of 90 bucks and i use the word scam here although that's not really fair to new in this case because no i paid 90 and i clicked a button that said no refunds you know what i mean

00:58:04 - 00:58:13 | Speaker 1:

so technically i'm not really what you want to say to them is can i get my money back because every review i've read of your company is that it's abysmal right and obviously i'm not going

00:58:13 - 00:58:38 | Speaker 2:

to say that and i was like if they ask me i'll just say i thought i was supposed to rent a car but it turns out my family has a car or something you know what i mean i'm just gonna make up some vague lie about why i rent how do you accidentally rent a car and pay in advance for it so anyway i reserve a car at alamo i go on with my night but again it's just sort of living in my head it's 90 i know it's just like it's not the end of the world but it's also i think for you like a fucking

00:58:38 - 00:58:55 | Speaker 1:

idiot is the principle of the matter and exactly the the very worst case scenario occurring which is you have anxiety around this transaction and then it went arguably worse than you could have even thought which had to be kind of why it was so bugging you yeah yeah i mean i felt like an idiot

00:58:55 - 00:59:59 | Speaker 2:

i felt like a baby i felt like um like i came home on sunday and said hey this will take you five minutes just rent a car and then i did you know like i'm on i'm already on the phone with two people oh at one point i even called the bank i'm like you know i i entered some business with some a company that seems sort of less than credible like should i put a flag on this charge now because luke that's a key thing in the email in this vague email that i got from the company new it said at the bottom in bold do not challenge this with your credit card company it will only prolong the process oh and as soon as i saw that and that was the biggest boldest letters in the short email and i was like oh my god like i was like that is the first sign that i need to i need to flag this with my credit card company the the person who picked up the phone at the credit card company was nice enough but also recognized me as being an idiot they're like you can just flag this online if you want i'm like should i do it now or wait they're like i don't know andrew Aren't you an adult?

01:00:00 - 01:00:02 | Speaker 1:

I was like, yes, person at the bank. I'm an adult.

01:00:02 - 01:00:05 | Speaker 2:

I would not give them a one-star review for that feedback.

01:00:06 - 01:02:20 | Speaker 1:

No, it was, I mean, she was being as helpful as she could, but what was my question? Like, I willfully handed over money to a company that I then regretted. Like, what, I mean, you know, what is she going to do? So anyway, I just kind of keep an eye on the bank account, and I'm just like, whatever. I guess we'll find out later this week. And again, it's one of those things where it's like, not that I'm going to be in trouble with Genevieve, but it's just embarrassing. like Genevieve's at a concert or something I think she was at Bumbershoot and so I'm like Genevieve's gonna come home and I'm gonna tell her the story and I'm just gonna feel like an idiot and like and so um and by the way when I did end up telling Genevieve the story later she did not make me feel like an idiot she said you know it was $90 anyway all of that is to say I go on with my night I think I'm mostly over it it's sort of eating away at me but I'm just like whatever and then I don't know around I don't know 11 o'clock at night or something I got an email from news saying hey here's your money back i checked the bank account it's like hey got my money back and like suddenly luke it was like a weight was lifted off of me that way it weighed so much more than 90 i cannot tell you like it's so irrational the feelings freaking out the feelings i was having across the course of i don't know three hours from when i first sat down to do this and then when i finally confirmed the money was back this story goes nowhere because nothing happened it was just all this weird pressure and it goes to your point that you mentioned before the break like i just i have no experience with this and so in a certain way it i am infantilized around these things i'm telling you if i rent two more cars you know in my life and you know or like maybe in the next two years it won't even be a thing for me you know like it's just that i don't i didn't have any reference points for this and i guess i had some insecurity about it and i just felt like an idiot at the end of the day but i got my money back and also i'll give five stars to alamo they were very nice loved my car rented a rented a kia forte like that oh i i usually get a will forte yeah no do you a kia you know pardon me i like my boxy cars but in this case i went with a sedan i got a i rented a mid-size but then when i got down to the garage like we don't have any more mid-size so any of these full-size sedans take them and i'm like oh is this a kia i see Hello, Kia.

01:02:21 - 01:03:48 | Speaker 2:

Kias have gotten pretty good. I think they used to be kind of a real kind of pretty affordable and sort of low-quality option at some point. I think Hyundai was kind of the same way, and then I think both companies, like, decided we're going to really change our imaging and our branding in the U.S. and create some pretty high-quality vehicles. I want to say, though, Andrew, that, like, I think that that story is very relatable to people, the one you just told, because it would be weird if I was talking about a different story from a show four weeks ago. I think that that story is relatable because it is not the $90, and there are so many examples in all of our lives, whether it's money or an email that one should be sending back to somebody or a piece of mail that you should open or a conversation you should have. There are so many things that take on this incredibly outsized importance in our minds or become this like this dread ball that you could carry around for maybe years because and it's not about the conversation that needs to happen or the ninety dollars or the envelope that needs to be open it's about something going on with us and i think we all can relate to that feeling whether it's about renting a car or not like that's just i know exactly i i have i have 20 examples of that from my own life they do not happen to be rental car related but they're exactly the same thing just applied to a different experience in my life yeah and i think i also had

01:03:48 - 01:04:01 | Speaker 1:

some other things going on in that moment that i was also putting you know what i mean it was one of those things where i could identify some stuff going on in my life that i was also you know kind of piling on there or that was like a kind of a carrier for a lot of anxiety and so it was just

01:04:01 - 01:04:12 | Speaker 2:

like one of those moments where a lot was kind of i'm really glad though i mean now the question is will you leave a positive review for new rental cars not based on the car but based on the fact

01:04:12 - 01:05:00 | Speaker 1:

that they did refund your money even though it said no refunds luke christian burbank i thought about that more than you think i kept thinking like do i leave like a two or three out of five star review and just say i i rented a car i paid in advance it said no refunds then i started to read all y'all's reviews and i panicked i asked for my money back and they they responded almost immediately with my money back like i almost wanted to just let people know that like because the here's the deal there were so many bad reviews luke but as you saw the word scam is like that is a real that goes from a bad review from bad service to actually you are operating a business that is trying to separate people from their money in an immoral

01:05:00 - 01:05:05 | Speaker 3:

away it's a matter of time before bob ferguson attorney general of the state of washington

01:05:05 - 01:05:10 | Speaker 4:

starts looking into your operation there's a 50 chance that he is suing them right now

01:05:10 - 01:05:17 | Speaker 1:

currently here i go once again with the email every week i hope that it's from a female

01:05:17 - 01:05:29 | Speaker 3:

no man it's not from a female do we have a one minute email yeah we have his 50 second email in fact perfect that buys me 10 more seconds to go jump in the elevator uh this is from listener

01:05:29 - 01:05:45 | Speaker 5:

Jillian, we were talking the other day about, I don't know why, we're talking about youthful games, I guess, and the weird notion kids sometimes have to walk up to another kid and say, go ahead, punch me as hard as you can. I don't know why we were talking about that, but here's this story.

01:05:45 - 01:05:47 | Speaker 2:

Hey, guys, this is Jillian from Sammamish.

01:05:47 - 01:05:49 | Speaker 5:

Oh, shoot. I said Jillian. Sorry, Jillian.

01:05:50 - 01:06:41 | Speaker 2:

Hey, guys, this is Jillian from Sammamish. I'm listening to you guys talk about friends punching each other as hard as they can. And I'm reminded of the time when I first met my dear friend, Sophia, in middle school. Never met her before. I'm a new kid at school. Go up to her and she says, you can punch me as hard as you want in the stomach. And I was like, yeah, I'm going to take you up on that. And I come to find out she had scoliosis and had a massive brace, like hard plastic brace around her torso. And so, you know, I wound up and punched her as hard as I could, and it really hurt. So buyer beware if anyone ever asks you to do that. Just be sure they don't have a debilitating spinal disease. And, yeah, power out.

01:06:42 - 01:06:54 | Speaker 4:

Yeah, for a couple of reasons. rooting for in that story like i kind of like the kid who's like punch me as hard as you can but she's wearing a steel plate under her shirt i love it yeah is that entrapment like legally because

01:06:54 - 01:07:05 | Speaker 3:

if the person didn't have the thought yeah of punching someone in the stomach as hard as they could if you suggest it but then you've also got some kind of hard brace that's gonna hurt their

01:07:05 - 01:07:10 | Speaker 5:

hand but also they did take the bait yeah well that's the classic saying if you're wearing a

01:07:10 - 01:07:39 | Speaker 3:

brace you gotta tell me that's right but that's for the courts to decide yeah all right thanks for the was it gillian or jillian gillian i think gillian okay thanks for the call gillian and thanks everyone for listening today we are going to be right back here tomorrow and by by back here i mean literally i'm going to be back here in becca's bedroom i think oh well or maybe the main room if she's working from the office i don't know we'll figure it out i mean seriously They lock her up, lock her up.

01:07:39 - 01:07:41 | Speaker 4:

And I am talking about that. You know what, I regret what I've said.

01:07:42 - 01:07:47 | Speaker 3:

We'll see you tomorrow. In the meantime, have a great Tuesday. Take care of yourselves, and please remember, no mountain too tall. And good luck to all.

01:07:47 - 01:08:12 | Speaker 4:
