00:00:41 - 00:00:47 | Speaker 3:

Oh, yes, that sound can only mean one thing. It's a special TBTL Thanksgiving Day edition.

00:00:48 - 00:00:50 | Speaker 2:

This is special. This is special.

00:00:51 - 00:03:37 | Speaker 3:

This right here is the show that just might be too beautiful to live. My name is Luke Burbank. I am your host. How about some meat? You like turkey? Who are you calling turkey? Hope you're having a nice day wherever you are, putting together some kind of bountiful feast, maybe. Welcome to Food News Today. And whatever you cook today is just fine. Whatever you choose. Meals like spiced turkey meatball pitas with bibbed lettuce and carrot salad. We're taking a break from the Thanksgiving preparations to bring you episode 4082 in a collector series. Here's something to be thankful for. I said the right show number today. I think I might have messed it up yesterday If you listened to yesterday's program you know that things were a bit chaotic because right as we were basically beginning the program, I was getting all kinds of updates about stuff going on at my parents' house, a busted water heater. It was literally a major disaster So we'll continue on talking about that in this episode of the show, and because this is a Thursday edition of the program, just because it's Thanksgiving doesn't mean the Blursdays stop The Blur's Day stopped for no one and no holiday. So we'll do some Blur's Day messages and we'll talk to this guy. The longest running co-bro of the show may be best known for his depictions of the tall ships. He's Andrew Walsh. Good morning, my friend. Good morning, Luke. What is the latest? Well, I'll put this caveat out there that we're pre-recording today's show. so it's actually it's still the day before thanksgiving as as i'm talking into this microphone this is because we want to actually have thanksgiving off yeah i'm really looking forward to this thanksgiving and god dang it i think we deserve it so um so i don't have all of the information but this is if you were listening to the uh yesterday's edition of the show you know that there's my parents water heater busted and that they're scrambling it's just the machinations continue on in the hawk squad uh where uh my sister hannah is offering up their place for hosting and for people to stay at tonight addy and i are in a side conversation about what we're going to do exactly my dad my dad says um uh in the hawk squad uh he says if luke can get up here right now he can help with the lifting this is as i'm talking to you on yesterday's edition of the show and then I have to put in I have to put into the text chain I'm still recording two episodes of TBTL sad face and then Addie side messages me LMAO better get to lifting kid and then she sends me lifting and then the greater than sign and then podcasting let's do

00:03:37 - 00:03:53 | Speaker 2:

this can you how fast can you get to my place you need to leave right now we'll finish recording this in the car or the truck as we drive to your parents' house, and we are going to be the heroes of Thanksgiving. We're going to get that water heater installed. We're going to sop up that water, and we're going to save the holiday.

00:03:55 - 00:05:00 | Speaker 3:

Here is my best guess at what will happen. And again, as this is being released to the world on Thursday, I guess I'll know the answer to this. But I have a feeling that this is going to get sorted, and we're going to end up at my parents' house after all. I think that there will be a staging area at my sister Hannah's. I think my dad will will burn the candle at both ends and possibly herniate himself lifting a water heater because his oldest son refuses to come out of his podcasting dome. And I do think that was a pretty sweet burn by Addy saying lifting is greater than podcasting. But I think that what will happen is it will get it will get sorted out and we will end up doing a kind of big old Burbank Thanksgiving at my parents house. But I think my dad's tendency is to err on the side of caution. Also, I mean, what a terrible thing to come down to in your basement the day before Thanksgiving while you've got a turkey brining like a foot of water. And so I think he probably was, you know, my guess is that my mom will be working on him tonight as he's working on the house. My mom will be working on him.

00:05:00 - 00:05:39 | Speaker 1:

and uh and eventually we will all end up over there um today as this is being released on thanksgiving but it is still uh hannah is now trying to see if she can get her husband my brother-in-law chris to leave work early to go help my dad lift the water heater that's they're marshalling all of the forces and resources so i feel so bad for your dad right now like legit i don't i'm podcasting you know i know no i know i feel bad but like i'm also the first geographically i'm literally the furthest person away so you know i mean i i don't want to i don't want to be unhelpful but also i feel like there are people closer to that water heater than me

00:05:39 - 00:05:45 | Speaker 2:

that could help with the lifting you're but you're you're his construction bro now because you guys

00:05:45 - 00:06:34 | Speaker 1:

have been working on the house i mean is he going to pay me more than the annonsons when i come help lift that water heater he has started calling whatever i don't know the the woman's first name but it's a couple that my dad does a lot of handy handyman work for and he started describing her as my rival or my nemesis i think he calls her my nemesis now he'll be like well you know what your nemesis did they went with those recessed led lights and i'm like yeah i don't really like that so um yeah i basically what i'm trying to say is the um this is still an unfolding story we'll be following it here live in real time and on monday we will get you will get a full update with all the benefit of hindsight and what actually ends up happening. But my prediction as of right now, still here at the Madrona Hill studio, is that we will end up having Thanksgiving dinner at my parents' house.

00:06:35 - 00:07:02 | Speaker 2:

Yeah, that makes sense. And again, I don't have the insight on your family, obviously, that you or any of your family members do. But in the time that I did spend around your family, I wasn't in your family, but I sat next to your family for about a week when we were doing our TBTL-a-thon. And I got the impression that if Susie B wants to have Thanksgiving at her house amidst a broken water heater or not, that is going to happen.

00:07:02 - 00:07:16 | Speaker 1:

She has she's got some powers of persuasion over my father. Now, here's my question to you. Are you and Veeves doing the are you doing the full meal deal? Are you cooking a turkey on Thanksgiving? Are you doing the mashed potatoes, the whole thing?

00:07:16 - 00:09:54 | Speaker 2:

Well, this is interesting because I'm really looking forward to Thanksgiving this year, although it might sound like a Thanksgiving. others i don't know why i'm putting it this way it is a non-traditional thanksgiving situation for us we often will host thanksgiving at our place but this time we're hosting easter instead we're really gonna yeah and what are the pronouns and we're drinking bud light no we i i like thanksgiving um and i mean not as obviously not as much as you do remember the joke that we said on the show a long time ago i mean this goes back a decade now but i think it was the funniest joke i ever made on the show when i said i'm looking forward to thanksgiving this year and you said why and i said because it's falling on sex day or something like that i do remember it was a very blue joke burned in my brain from from red andrew but anyway um so you we had plans to have maybe a couple people come over here for thanksgiving this year we often do that genevieve and i i mean genevieve does the vast majority of the cooking but I you know we'll make the mashed potatoes and uh Brussels sprouts and a couple of other dishes and we usually do it upright and we'll have uh you know a handful of people over this year it was a very small crew to even call them a crew we had two guests that Genevieve had invited and just kind of she came home from the Eagles one time and said we're doing Thanksgiving and one of the people I've never met before um uh you know I can't speak to him at all i don't want to be insulting but also i just don't know who he is he's a fellow who is a um fellow eagle who is uh visiting from another state doing some contract work or something here so he's been hanging out at the eagles and um making friends with folks and genevieve you know is a good-hearted person who sees something like that and especially on thanksgiving said why don't you come over but it was just going to be me and genevieve and him a fella from out of state whom i've never met before sure and uh interesting dynamic yes and one other good friend of ours who's who is a good friend of ours and who's met this person but is not best friends with this person at all so i gotta be honest with you i was like oh this is gonna be there was kind of the first thanksgiving and in a while and again genevieve really likes making all this food she likes the leftovers she likes everything that goes along with it so i feel sort of bad talking her out of that plan but i was like okay this is gonna be kind of a strange dynamic i don't even know who this dude is i'm spending my thanksgiving in my house with him like i don't know i just wasn't into it and i'm not trying to be insulting to him were he to ever hear this but i've never met him so i guess i'm not being insulted it's just like the dynamic seemed and it's one thing

00:09:54 - 00:10:04 | Speaker 1:

if there's going to be like 15 people yeah then it's kind of like the more the merrier and everyone will kind of end up you know sort of chatting up whoever they're chatting up but if it's the three of you that's

00:10:04 - 00:11:27 | Speaker 2:

a that's with one of the one other good friend still it's a unique dynamic exactly exactly and so um so that was like all right whatever like I'm fine with that and then I saw on the the calendar that the the Seahawks are playing on Thanksgiving which was a new phenomenon for me I don't think any of my NFL teams have ever played on Thanksgiving before so I got excited about that I'm like okay well that's good we'll do Thanksgiving and then we'll watch the game But then I remembered, oh, no, Genevieve likes to have Thanksgiving around dinnertime, not like afternoon like some families do. So that would mean that basically we'd be starting Thanksgiving about halfway through the Thursday night football game with the Seahawks. And I was like, oh, God, then that really bummed me out. I was like kind of the one silver lining was, well, after dinner, I'll watch the game. But out on the West Coast, that would mean we'd be done with dinner by 5 o'clock or 520 or something like that. So now I'm like, OK, we're going to have Thanksgiving here. I'm going to have to stop watching the game to have dinner with a stranger. And I was just sort of not feeling it. Then I went to the Eagles last weekend, and it turns out that the Eagles are having a potluck that a bunch of our friends are going to be at and watching the game together and everything. Oh, how fun. And I was so filled with FOMO. You know me. I don't suffer from FOMO much. But when I heard everybody was going to be at the Eagles having a Thanksgiving potluck, watching the football game together, I asked Genevieve if we could consider doing that. And with the help of friends and alcohol, we persuaded her.

00:11:27 - 00:11:43 | Speaker 1:

that sounds really fun that sounds like what i grew up like i told you when i was a young kid i mentioned this on like yesterday's show we would go to our church and that was fun and we didn't even have booze yeah right like i'm imagine all of that camaraderie and the seahawks and

00:11:43 - 00:12:33 | Speaker 2:

alcohol and medicine yeah i'm really looking forward to it luke um despite the way that i sort of gave it a backhanded compliment like i can't remember and i i like thanksgiving but i honestly, I don't know what it is. Maybe it's because like you and I had a lot of work to do to prepare to take these two days off, but we're getting it all done. And I have a plan. I'm kind of ahead of the game. It's not like, I don't think I'm going to be working until midnight tonight, getting everything set for this. Like I have been looking forward to my Wednesday night. I don't even have plans. I might actually have to make something for this potluck tomorrow. So I don't know exactly what I'm going to do this evening, but I can't explain it all, you know, the past couple of days i've been so excited to like get everything all my tbtl work tied up with a bow today and then just like really enjoy four full days of just holiday and and very little

00:12:33 - 00:13:25 | Speaker 1:

responsibility i'm really psyched well um we could use you over in silverdale for some hot water heater lifting andrew i mean when i said i'm the furthest person away right geographically what i was indicating was you are probably the closest person geographically actually i literally was if i could get over that water you're probably i mean you know you could just walk on the ferry my dad will come grab you yeah you can swing by home depot no that is true and get your hands on a new hot water heater um yeah i i am like i'm just looking at the as the as the text chain churns on i'm just realizing how much i'm letting my dad down by prioritizing podcasting oh really that's kind of i thought you're not he's not he's not like you know he's not indicating that i'm just thinking about it like he never asks me for anything the one thing is like well if luke can come up here and help and i'm just like i'm podcasting right well sorry we do have to get

00:13:25 - 00:13:28 | Speaker 2:

this done i tell him i won't let you okay

00:13:28 - 00:14:42 | Speaker 1:

i'll tell you what i'm thankful for today andrew our donors who are keeping tbtl in business with their generous financial support folks like nancy cook who's out there in burie in washington what a day to be named cook indeed i mean a lot of responsibility on your shoulders i suppose sure yeah it's kind of your day to shine nancy uh then jennifer stockall is in stock 10 california hey perfect now is that is jennifer the person who we did the show was that sacramento or Stockton? Remember we went to someone's yard? Was that Sacramento? Yeah, it was Sacramento, yes. Okay, all right. I'm sure Jennifer would also host us, though, if we were passing through Stockton. Would you? Really? I mean, I don't know, I guess. What about Jennifer Oak, who's in Woodinville, Washington? I think most certainly, yes. Of the two Jennifers today, you're feeling like Jennifer Oak. By the way, Jennifer's last name is Oak, and she lives in a town called Woodinville. I know, I almost... There's a lot going on here. You don't believe in a god, Andrew?

00:14:42 - 00:14:43 | Speaker 2:

And also, I think of Woodinville,

00:14:43 - 00:15:00 | Speaker 1:

I think of wine, and I think of Oak Barrels. Uh-huh, sure. Kristen Corley is in Wilmington, North Carolina. Thank you, Kristen. Hope you're having a nice Thanksgiving, Kristen, and thank you for supporting the program. Michael J.

00:15:00 - 00:15:03 | Speaker 2:

Smith is in University Place, Washington.

00:15:04 - 00:15:07 | Speaker 1:

Remind, I do this to you every time. Remind me of the university?

00:15:09 - 00:15:13 | Speaker 2:

Well, that's a good, is it near PLU maybe? It's funny because

00:15:13 - 00:15:17 | Speaker 1:

I've never. I've looked this up last year, I think probably to the day we had this conversation.

00:15:17 - 00:15:38 | Speaker 2:

Probably Pacific Lutheran University would be my guess. But, you know, it's funny, I never put that together. I mean, maybe last year I did when you did this, but it whiffed out of my mind. I just have grown up knowing that there's something sort of near Tacoma called University Place In fact, I think it was the marching band from University Place High School that won our first ever TBTL marching band competition.

00:15:38 - 00:15:40 | Speaker 1:

Oh, no kidding. That's funny.

00:15:40 - 00:17:17 | Speaker 2:

They were certainly in the finals, University Place. Okay. But I've never thought about it in a connection to a university, which it's right there in the name, so it's probably PLU. It's the University of Puget Sound. Oh, UPS. Okay. Yeah. Apologies to the folks at UPS. I went on a visit to UPS once, not for me going to college, but my good friend Joe Dolan, who was getting a lot of attention on the show this week. He was visiting some local colleges, and we went down to UPS together, and it was like such a beautiful campus. and it was sort of springtime of our senior year and it was just one of those beautiful spring nights in the Northwest where things are blooming and it's sort of warm but not too warm and the local organization of I think students who went to UPS but had come from like the Pacific Islands had dug a big hole in the ground and put a bunch of superheated rocks in there and were roasting a pig in the ground And it smelled so good Just wandering around this unbelievably Verdant campus Where they're just also roasting a pig I was like, how much is this place? Oh, okay, yeah, I won't be going here $40,000 a year? No, okay I'll be up at the UW if you need me But anyway, Alice Davey Is also supporting the program from Seattle, Washington Another place that I've been Thanks, Alice Thank you to all of our donors today Thanks for keeping TBTL going Of all days, we are—well, we're thankful every day, but we're extra thankful today for all of you. Thank you, babies.

00:17:19 - 00:17:21 | Speaker 1:

Thank you, baby.

00:17:24 - 00:18:57 | Speaker 2:

Hello, and welcome to Top Story. All right. Our top story. We are picking up where we left off on yesterday's show about the quiz, trying to figure out if, in fact, Andrew and I are cool, hip millennials or sad old boomers. Those are the only two choices we have, even though we fall, even though generationally we fall in between both. Yes. Yes. But we got to pick one, Andrew. And we are on question number four of eight. This is a Washington Post quiz about how—by the way, I should mention, I should have done this yesterday, Danielle Abriel, Alyssa Fowers, and Elena Lacey are the folks that put this together in the Washington Post, this kind of quiz of ways that you communicate in a work environment and what that might indicate about kind of how you sort of behave generationally. So we're at question four of eight. It's the middle of the workday, and you need to send your colleague a text to ask about the meeting that will begin in an hour, which best describes your approach to the message. Always start with a salutation and name, Dear Amy, or Good Afternoon, Amy, and use punctuation and capitalization to separate sentences. Do you often use punctuation and capitalization, but you're less formal and consistent? often don't use punctuation and capitalization rather separate your thoughts with different messages never use periods or capitals unless you're trying to emphasize something and keep

00:18:57 - 00:19:40 | Speaker 1:

messages short it was kind of a mouthful there it was a lot but basically are you going to start a text message by saying dear so-and-so or are you going to write properly but not like you're writing a letter this is all in a text message or just be pretty loosey-goosey with things or like specifically never use periods or capitals um i am probably and i know that this puts me solidly in the old camp but i'm going to use punctuation and capitalization but i'm going to be less formal and less consistent with it correct that's exactly that's the right answer andrew because that's because that's what i'm going to do as well is this the right answer i'm looking for me i feel like we need some sort of music going and i found an is this This is a

00:19:40 - 00:19:43 | Speaker 2:

Is this a cover of 9to5?

00:19:43 - 00:19:51 | Speaker 1:

It's a MIDI version of 9to5 Does this work? It just felt a little dry Is this too distracting? No, I'm down for it

00:19:51 - 00:20:12 | Speaker 2:

By the way, we have an update We have an update from the basement, Andrew Yeah? I can't believe that of all of the days for me to not have my tbtl breaking news sound effect ready to go i feel like uh i'm really falling down on the job but it is a holiday so i mean i'm not even supposed to be here today uh we have a little uh

00:20:12 - 00:20:21 | Speaker 1:

we have a little update here some uh tbtl breaking news text on the hawk squad from my mom the

00:20:21 - 00:21:06 | Speaker 2:

sleeping will be okay downstairs by tomorrow hopefully so let's keep plan a uh with the brooks and their doggies for tomorrow also sleeping upstairs for addy and luke will work tonight just maybe no hot water until the new heater is installed your dad is working on the situation now the question is your mom is just like any of this with my dad water just pushing through is she just is she just freelancing right now oh my god did she run any of this there will be no hot water walt is knee deep in water in the basement right now his phone is sitting on a windowsill buzzing somewhere as my mom as my my mom is calling an audible at the line omaha omaha she's wiping off she's she's she's she's calling her own rpo at the line and i don't

00:21:06 - 00:21:21 | Speaker 1:

know if she's cleared her with the coaches oh no your dad's phone was sitting on a sill somewhere out of the water and then it was this text message that buzzed it right into the water and now it's floating on top and you're just seeing all these i'm this is such a movie about a holiday disaster

00:21:21 - 00:21:41 | Speaker 2:

My dad is trapped under a hot water heater because his oldest son won't stop podcasting long enough to come help him. My mom is upstairs texting away, trying to try to commandeer the situation and keep everything on track so that we can have her moment of Zen happen anyway. OK, so sorry. Back to our Washington Post quiz.

00:21:42 - 00:21:52 | Speaker 1:

So when we're texting colleagues, we're probably going to use some punctuation and capitalization, but we're going to be less formal and less consistent. And we're certainly not starting with a dear so-and-so or a sincerely Andrew.

00:21:52 - 00:22:57 | Speaker 2:

But I am generally still concerned about punctuation. Like, it's not a free-for-all. I'm not just sending you a, you know, hey, you, and like using the letter you, hey, are you going to be around later or whatever? I'm still trying to have, you know, this resemble the English language or how I think of the English language. And I'm also big on making sure that I oftentimes end things with an exclamation point A thanks and an exclamation point Particularly if it's something where I want to make sure you know that I'm not being sullen about it Sometimes if I'm driving, there's just no avoiding it And I forget what it was the other day where I sent you a message like, yep And then you were just like, huh, this guy must be ticked Which I wasn't, I think it was that I was driving But I do I do try to particularly in my work emails with like, say, Livewire, I am like the world's most sort of I use exclamation points much more than I should just to really let everyone know that I am I'm I'm a friendly guy.

00:22:57 - 00:24:13 | Speaker 1:

i know this has come up before and i'm not this person anymore but when i was in college god i was just such an asshole in college i was furious at people who would use exclamation points to convey friendliness because i was like that is not the point of an exclamation point the point of an exclamation point is to put it at the end of a what is the word i'm looking for and uh well a sentence that needs it there's a certain type of sentence that calls for an exclamation point um and i can't think of the word for it declarative yeah well not declare i almost said that but not excited to be excited to be friendly a tiff um but anyway i'm not that anymore and i do think it is important to convey tone and of course then you think there's some gendered stuff in the workplace around that too about like like do women have to come off as more friendly and use more exclamation points is something that's been uh looked at and discussed but like when i was in college i was just like people would put a sign up that says like please stop taking the pens exclamation point well that sounds kind of aggressive in that case i don't know but people were using them i'm like if you want to use a smiley face use a smiley face i'd like to point out this is long before like emoji culture so what does this say about us by the way what's the little nothing it says the way you communicate quick messages relates back to how you learn to relay messages earlier in life yep that scans all right well thanks for that yep are we gonna get

00:24:13 - 00:24:44 | Speaker 2:

by the way i am actually enjoying the graphics of this article which i know is lost on the listeners because this is audio but like i do think the graphics are pretty good all right question five of eight you're on a work chat about the latest strategies for an upcoming project your colleague makes a light-hearted joke that you find funny how do you respond do you say that was funny do you lol do you send a laugh cry emoji or do you send a skull emoji um i'll go first on this

00:24:44 - 00:24:59 | Speaker 1:

one um this is a tough one for me because it's none of those things i'm not going to say that was funny um i would probably write h ah i'm sorry h a i would write ha exclamation point if i felt the need to reply

00:25:00 - 00:25:52 | Speaker 3:

honestly and you probably know this about me I'm not a big fan of just letting somebody know in a text chain that I found something funny like it's usually this funny do you think I am like I don't mean to be I just think it's kind of like somebody says something funny especially in a group chat like you don't need validation from me like it's pretty funny I've laughed out loud I don't need to tell you that I've laughed out loud but if I am going to do that because it's rude just to let somebody hang I will write H A exclamation point I'm not going to use a crying face I'm not going to use a skull i might if i felt social pressure use the crying face if i can like um like kind of imprint it on the text message itself you know what i'm talking about not like send a text message with a crying face but react a comment reactionary yeah exactly but i don't know man i'm gonna click the first one and just say that was funny because even though that's like really square i'm i never write lol

00:25:52 - 00:25:58 | Speaker 1:

or use emojis i'd probably say like back away banana breath what the hell did you just eat a Banana?

00:25:58 - 00:26:16 | Speaker 2:

Yeah, I did. Kind of my response. I would say I'd probably do laughy cry emoji because, Andrew, I'm secure in my adulthood. And I don't care who knows it. Now, I'm wondering, is the skull, like, is that like an Addy generation joke?

00:26:17 - 00:26:24 | Speaker 3:

Oh, I know what that means. It's like dead. You know, like somebody's made you laugh so much you're just like dead skull and crossbones.

00:26:25 - 00:26:44 | Speaker 2:

Similar to your preferred form of communication, your use of slang or emojis point back to normalized behaviors that you learned earlier in life, experts say. Yeah, thanks. So are we going to get some kind of printout at the end of this that tells us officially if we're a cool-ass millennial or a square-ass boomer?

00:26:44 - 00:26:53 | Speaker 3:

I was wondering that, too, and I did scroll to the bottom, and it says before you can see your result, you have to answer all the questions, and you still have to do six, seven, and eight. So it's following us.

00:26:53 - 00:26:57 | Speaker 2:

All right, okay. All right. Would you favor us with question number six, Andrew?

00:26:57 - 00:27:02 | Speaker 3:

A colleague sends an... Oh, I'm sorry about this. We should do it right. If we're going to do it, you do it right.

00:27:04 - 00:27:10 | Speaker 2:

It's so ominous. This is the weirdest version of this song ever, and I'm kind of loving it.

00:27:10 - 00:27:55 | Speaker 3:

Hey, happy Thanksgiving, everybody. We're talking about workplace culture and listening to tinny, midi versions of Dolly Parton's 9 to 5. This does not feel like Thanksgiving. here's question number six a colleague sends an email asking you for an update on a project what are you most likely to do in your response double space between sentences use a lot of exclamation points or count them if you're worried about being too enthusiastic use a less formal salutation like hey or hi followed by the recipient's name avoid emailing for other quicker messaging options if possible in other words send a text or slack or something like that uh i am most like do you

00:27:55 - 00:28:09 | Speaker 2:

want to go first on this one i think if you were to send me an email saying hey what's the status on that i think i would just use a less formal salutation like hey hey and no i wouldn't say

00:28:09 - 00:28:14 | Speaker 3:

hey andrew that would be weird um you always call me bub in email yeah i'm trying a new thing where

00:28:14 - 00:28:20 | Speaker 2:

i call you bozo hey but i might actually double space between sentences only so that it reads

00:28:20 - 00:28:24 | Speaker 3:

easier you and i are big on bullet points like yeah i don't because i feel like i don't like

00:28:24 - 00:28:44 | Speaker 2:

sending an email that just has a big block of writing because i feel like it's it's annoying to the reader and it doesn't really like highlight the things i just want a person to be able to look at this and then very quickly get the information i'm trying to transmit yeah so i guess i'm just going to go with double space between sentences um what am i most likely to do here god i that

00:28:44 - 00:29:10 | Speaker 3:

that one does speak to me no joke especially as you describe it that way um i definitely count exclamation points and then delete them then maybe not count them all but i i will go over and realize like oh i just wrote three exclamation pointed sentences in a row and so i do go back and edit that um i'm always starting with hey or hi probably so any of the top three would be fine for me, but I'm going to go with the exclamation point one, I think.

00:29:10 - 00:29:52 | Speaker 2:

Okay. Let's see. This says, formal formats of communicating come from the older generations, while younger generations may be less formal or even nervous to communicate formally, experts say. Okay. I mean, my mind is blown by that to hear that younger generations might be less formal. Andrew, I thought it was going more formal. I know. Your colleagues discuss work all day less. Question seven of eight. your colleagues discuss work all day long on slack during video meetings they also use the chat function to chime in while you or other people are speaking how do these chats make you feel i see some people chatting while you're talking while you're giving a presentation

00:29:52 - 00:30:28 | Speaker 3:

seeing two people sidelining that's going to make me nervous i haven't looked at what the options are yet i found a new midi version Thank you.

00:30:00 - 00:30:21 | Speaker 1:

Oh, this is good. Yeah. Does it make you feel overwhelmed, Andrew? The chatting feels disruptive and too hard to keep track of. Does it make you feel included? Chat tools make it easier to communicate with colleagues and participate without speaking. So you either feel overwhelmed by it. I'm thinking that's the boomer answer. Oh, I see. You're a part of this. Okay. Because you're cool and young.

00:30:22 - 00:30:47 | Speaker 2:

No, I'll feel included on this. I might feel both, honestly. I might be like, I'll have to go through those later. But the thing is, I misunderstood this question. I thought it was like, I'm trying to give a presentation and I see these people just like making eye contact and tap, tap, tapping to each other and me just wondering, like, what are they saying about my presentation? But if I'm part of the slack, yeah, I'll say I feel included. But the truth is I probably feel a little of both.

00:30:48 - 00:30:50 | Speaker 1:

Do you have a pair of dice in your pocket?

00:30:50 - 00:30:53 | Speaker 2:

I know. That's exactly what I was thinking of, too.

00:30:54 - 00:31:16 | Speaker 1:

I'm going to say I feel included because, again, I'm young and cool. And so they say that if you feel, well, I don't think this is related to the answer, but another little update. How long you've been exposed to specific technologies often translates into how comfortable you are using them, which can vary among generations, comma, Andrew, you ready for it? Yeah. Experts say.

00:31:19 - 00:31:24 | Speaker 2:

All right. This is good, though. We are going to get an answer about ourselves at the end, so I'm excited about this.

00:31:25 - 00:31:44 | Speaker 1:

By the way, I love how, like, this is the least scientific thing ever. But if you try, if you were to try to get out of it only answering seven of the questions, it's got, you need to answer every question to see your result. You're missing question eight. Yeah, I know. They're not messing around. You either do this or you don't. But we're not, there's no half measures here, Andrew. No, not at all.

00:31:45 - 00:31:49 | Speaker 2:

Okay, we have one more. Why don't you do that while I look for some more music here?

00:31:49 - 00:31:59 | Speaker 1:

Okay. In the meantime, though, Andrew, I just have to tell you, we have a little bit more TBTL breaking news. Oh, good. I'll stop the music then. TBTL breaking news.

00:31:59 - 00:32:00 | Speaker 2:

Oh, you found the right drop.

00:32:01 - 00:32:18 | Speaker 1:

I did. I texted my mom on the Hawk Squad. I said, Mom, did Dad authorize your last message? And then I put a laugh-crying emoji, so she knew I wasn't trying to be stern. I just wanted to make sure she wasn't going rogue. And she responded, yes, he did, exclamation point.

00:32:18 - 00:32:18 | Speaker 2:

Oh, great.

00:32:18 - 00:33:01 | Speaker 1:

So my dad is authorizing the message to go out that we are, as of right now, pushing forward with something that resembles Plan A. Okay. Yeah, I mean, your dad wants to save Thanksgiving, too. Of course. He'll be laid up from wrenching his back trying to lift the hot water heater by himself. Speaking of chats and feeling included, I felt included when Addy was texting me, lifting is greater than podcasting, Dad. That was a side chat. You didn't feel overwhelmed by that? I did not feel overwhelmed. You send a colleague You have a friendly relationship with A text or chat message during the work day About a project, which of the following are you most likely To include in that message A gif, where do we land on that by the way

00:33:01 - 00:33:07 | Speaker 2:

I say gifs, I know that I say gifs I know it's a debate and I know that there's an argument

00:33:07 - 00:33:16 | Speaker 1:

On the other side, I don't care Oh wow, do you send a gif Do you use words or phrases like Unalive or it's giving Are you familiar with it's giving Andrew

00:33:17 - 00:33:20 | Speaker 2:

Isn't it like it's giving vibes or something? Isn't that general? Kind of.

00:33:20 - 00:34:02 | Speaker 1:

It's giving, like let's say somebody was wearing, somebody came to work wearing like a white linen suit and a bolo tie. You might say it's giving Colonel Sanders. Oh, right. Yeah. No, I don't know unalive though. Unalive is now the terminology that they like, well, that people often use instead of saying someone has died. Because certain social media filters, Like if you if you talk about somebody passing away or somebody taking their own life, there's filters that will grab that. So people that people have started to say unalive a lot in lieu of those things so that they won't get snatched by the filter. But it must be something being snatched is its own thing. You look good. You look snatched.

00:34:02 - 00:34:16 | Speaker 2:

But it must be slang in a way that you're not necessarily talking about somebody actually passing away. Right. I mean, that would be weird in the context of this. You're sending a colleague, they have a friendly relationship with a text or a chat message during the workday about a project?

00:34:17 - 00:34:37 | Speaker 1:

Well, it's weird that they include unalive because they could have put other things in there like no cap or bet or whatever. But unalive is, yeah, that would be kind of odd in a work, potentially odd in a work conversation. But people will say, like, I felt like I was going to unalive myself. Oh, wow. Is a construction that you'll see online.

00:34:37 - 00:34:37 | Speaker 2:

It's so dark.

00:34:37 - 00:34:43 | Speaker 1:

Well, Andrew, I'm just Listen, I'm just the representative of youth culture No, I'm not, you know, that's not a you

00:34:43 - 00:34:50 | Speaker 2:

I just don't know why is that I'm mad at the people who were bringing this up During a conversation about a work project

00:34:50 - 00:35:04 | Speaker 1:

Would you send emojis that mean what they are? I kind of like that move Addy will do that to me sometimes So it'll be like Like, you know, a picture of a water heater and a picture of a flood. Yeah, right. Like, I'm down for that literalism.

00:35:04 - 00:35:08 | Speaker 2:

I mean, that's literally what she did, right? She sent you the joke about the podcasting.

00:35:09 - 00:35:37 | Speaker 1:

Well, she did the greater than, less than signage. Oh, I see. I still have to remember which one indicates which. The smaller one eats the bigger one. Yes, that's, I think, how I remember it. That's how they taught me that in second grade or something? Yeah. Would you include a signature at the end of your comment? If you and I were texting back and forth about a project casually, and we had a friendly relationship. So this is going to take kind of putting yourself in a different headspace regarding me. But imagine we had a friendly relationship. Would you put a signature at the end of your comment?

00:35:38 - 00:35:48 | Speaker 2:

Luke, comma, I hate you, comma, sincerely, Andrew. I would use a GIF. I'm big on GIFs. I love animated GIFs.

00:35:48 - 00:35:54 | Speaker 1:

The GIF that keeps on GIFing? Indeed. Okay. I would definitely not say it's giving or unalive.

00:35:54 - 00:35:56 | Speaker 2:

Definitely don't say unalive.

00:35:56 - 00:35:57 | Speaker 1:

I think I would say GIF too.

00:35:57 - 00:36:12 | Speaker 2:

I think I can get down with a GIF. I love a good GIF. A well-placed GIF. Okay, it says, even casual forms of communicating can vary among generations, with younger generations opting for more slang and emojis and older ones remaining more formal. Who do you think says that?

00:36:12 - 00:36:35 | Speaker 1:

Andrew, I have my result, and it couldn't be less revealing about me. And if I'm a cool young hip, or if i'm an elder boomer type you sound like a mix of all four generations at work

00:36:35 - 00:36:52 | Speaker 2:

oh that's interesting my i thought we're gonna have the same thing i did too mine says you sound like a turkey squawking no it says uh you sound like a gen xer it says you have some millennial and some gen z habits read on to learn how each i'm like oh well yeah i thought you're gonna get

00:36:52 - 00:36:59 | Speaker 1:

But we all suspected I'm cool and young and I'm a Gen Xer like, yeah, I guess I am a Gen Xer.

00:36:59 - 00:37:21 | Speaker 2:

I very much do feel like a Gen Xer. So it says, let's see here, the middle child, 43 percent of your responses sound like a Gen Xer, less hardcore and formal approach to work than their boomer predecessors, more likely to drop extraneous niceties to get to the point. Yep. Started pushing for a better Gen X was the generation that started pushing for better work life balance, et cetera.

00:37:21 - 00:37:26 | Speaker 1:

so good and also it has a handy little button here where you can retake the quiz so should

00:37:26 - 00:38:01 | Speaker 2:

we just start over i mean what are we doing for tomorrow's show okay luke i know that this is where usually we would just hear tim heinecker playing bass and singing the um blurs day song which he did right for us but it seemed like a weird tone for thanksgiving i mean dolly parton midi versions of nine to five and eventually jolene which i graduated to that feels like thanksgiving to me but the blurs day theme song doesn't so i stumbled on this today i just typed in thanksgiving music this is one of the first results it begins with a little montage of voices

00:38:01 - 00:38:06 | Speaker 3:

and then really gets us into the spirit this is where thanksgiving really begins isn't it

00:38:06 - 00:38:09 | Speaker 2:

or not. You're referring to the Aromaro roast turkey. I concur.

00:38:11 - 00:38:21 | Speaker 3:

See ya. I've got plenty to be thankful for.

00:38:21 - 00:38:59 | Speaker 2:

Oh, this is actually. Yeah. This is nice. This is putting me in the mood. Isn't it great? And I don't know who put together that little introduction for with the radio scratching and the kid's voice, but this is putting me in the Thanksgiving mood. Absolutely. I'm thankful I didn't have to lift that hot water here. Yeah, absolutely. And I am thankful to have the opportunity to say Happy Blur's Day to these folks. Let's see here. I got a note here from Angela, a.k.a. Coco, who says, just wanted to wish my 10 Justin a very happy birthday. He's the most awesome person in the world. His birthday is Monday, if I'm doing my math right. Happy Blur's Day, Justin.

00:39:00 - 00:39:05 | Speaker 3:

I just want you to be normal, and clearly you're not. What do you think that next one was?

00:39:06 - 00:39:07 | Speaker 2:

Try it again.

00:39:07 - 00:39:11 | Speaker 3:

Isn't that for techno geeks with spreadsheets?

00:39:11 - 00:39:44 | Speaker 2:

We never did that game. And just one more. Leanna in Queens, New York says, Happy belated Blur's Day to me. You know, this is a long one. Usually I'd edit it, but since we only have two today. Let me try giving this a cold read here. Apologies in advance for stumbling around. I'm certain I will. Apparently, I kept forgetting to send this in before thursday's podcast my birthday was earlier this month and i had a great time with friends first at the museum of broadway here uh oh matt berry voice new york city i can't do it can you

00:39:44 - 00:40:00 | Speaker 1:

00:40:00 - 00:40:01 | Speaker 2:

00:40:01 - 00:40:03 | Speaker 1:

I really put you on the spot. Really, Leanna put us on the spot.

00:40:03 - 00:40:09 | Speaker 2:

Exactly. I mean, happy birthday to you. But, I mean, that was, you know, that was cold-blooded.

00:40:10 - 00:40:51 | Speaker 1:

Yeah. But it does sound like so Leanna got to go to the Museum of Broadway and also got to enjoy some beer and cheese at a beer and cheese concern. Our trivia team came in second. Leanna says, I was laid off from my job almost eight years later. I'm sorry, late in the summer. But here's to another year of existence with good food, good friends, good trivia, and an upcoming one that hopefully includes a full-time job. Any 10s hiring a copy editor? That's all from Leanna. We are happy. Yeah. Anybody hiring a better host who can read? Oh, sorry about all the stumbles there. But happy Blur's Day, Leanna, and hope that you do find that copy editing job soon.

00:40:51 - 00:41:02 | Speaker 2:

Absolutely. And this is a good reminder that I need to Get that Matt Berry drop Loaded in to this computer so we can have it At the ready for next year when it's Leanne's birthday Yes I can hear it

00:41:02 - 00:41:07 | Speaker 1:
