Hi! Oh my God! How's your first red carpet?

00:00:04 - 00:00:32 | Speaker 4:

I can't believe they put you all the way out here for this. Hey, hey, hey, hey. Nice to meet you. I'm Chase Dream's manager. Yeah, no, we met last week. We had a full meal together. Oh, gay brother and girl sister. Oh, you guys aren't getting married, are you? Because that would be bad optics for this guy right here. Although, love is love is love is love, as Linda Manuel once said. It's Lin-Manuel Miranda. Lin-Manuel? Who's Linda Manuel then? And why do I represent her? by River Center. TBTL!

00:00:35 - 00:00:50 | Speaker 1:

She's buying, right? Because I will be ordering a bowl of soup as an appetizer, not a cup. Chuck, I know, people say I'll fill up, but you have no idea how my body processes soup. I love pickles. You know, it's my heritage. I love a pickle.

00:00:50 - 00:00:53 | Speaker 2:

It's embarrassing and it's gross, but at least it's kind of funny.

00:00:54 - 00:00:58 | Speaker 1:

There you have it. A practical example of modern communication. How'd it go?

00:00:59 - 00:01:05 | Speaker 4:

Well, he's going to acknowledge me on Instagram, so I guess you could say it was one of the best conversations of my entire life.

00:01:05 - 00:01:08 | Speaker 2:

You know, it's just living truthfully in imaginary circumstances.

00:01:08 - 00:01:10 | Speaker 4:

So if you're out there, come find me.

00:01:12 - 00:01:21 | Speaker 3:

All right. Hello, good morning, and welcome, everyone, to a Thursday edition of TVTL, the show that just might be too beautiful to live.

00:01:21 - 00:01:25 | Speaker 4:

It's not as sexy as sending astronauts to the moon.

00:01:25 - 00:02:39 | Speaker 3:

My name is Luke Burbank. I am your host. Oh, la, la. Coming to you from the Madrona Hill studio, perched high above the mighty Columbia. Bring it back home, baby. Bring it back home. I did not realize until I walked in here this morning that it has been a long time. I was in Chicago last week and then went to L.A. and then Leavenworth, Washington. And now I've got just a brief window of time here to come to you from the home studio. And it is just, it's nice. it's comfortable i was about to say it's warm it's not warm yet we still really have a great hvac situation here but it's it's nice to be here perched high above the mighty columbia and talking to all of you on my normal setup here on episode 4097 in a collector series and we have a lot to talk about the fun begin including cosmics the mcdonald's coffee The situation that I believe a lot of the mainstream media is misunderstanding the point of Cosmix restaurants. They're saying that they are coming for Starbucks.

00:02:39 - 00:02:41 | Speaker 4:

This song goes out to all the coffee lovers of the world.

00:02:41 - 00:03:06 | Speaker 3:

I mean, I guess they are in a way coming for Starbucks, but they're really coming for a Northwest brand that I've talked about on the show a lot. So we will get into that. Also, usually my friend Andrew is the one with the garbage anxiety. But I have this morning more of a garbage quandary, something going on with my garbage, and I'm wondering how I should react and respond.

00:03:06 - 00:03:07 | Speaker 4:

I mean, trash is trash.

00:03:08 - 00:03:29 | Speaker 3:

So we will take up one of the most tried and true topics on this program, garbage anxiety coming up. Oh, and another tried and true topic on Thursdays, a.k.a. Blur's Day. We do the Blur's Day messages, so we'll do that as well. Plus, we will talk to the aforementioned Andrew Walsh, maybe best known for his depictions of the tall ships, their grace, their splendor.

00:03:29 - 00:03:31 | Speaker 2:

That's a tuna, bro!

00:03:31 - 00:03:32 | Speaker 3:

He's joining me right now. Good morning, my friend.

00:03:33 - 00:03:57 | Speaker 2:

Good morning, Luke. Looks like I'm headed to the old, I guess, Lowe's, the hardware store after the show today. I'm not a doer. I don't like to get more done. I like to get some done. Hmm. I'm going to looser my, oh, dang it, man. It's early. Looser your expectations? My expectations. I had the word when I started the sentence.

00:03:57 - 00:04:17 | Speaker 3:

You're actually really lucky that on my new setup, somehow in all of my audio transfers, I did not get my Home Depot theme moved over. You know that's one of my absolute faves to just punish you with. Yeah. So you and the listeners have a short reprieve from doers getting more done. And by short, I mean that reprieve is over.

00:04:18 - 00:04:50 | Speaker 2:

Well, the reprieve is over. We also know, and I like this for science, we know exactly how long it takes for the word expectations to leave my head. When I started the joke about lozering my expectations, I knew the word expectations. By the time I got to the part of the sentence where I had to say said word, it had left my head. So I guess like, what, maybe 0.5 seconds, 1.5 seconds, somewhere around there. But I do have a disappointment in my shower right now. Oh, well. It's not the usual one. Okay.

00:04:51 - 00:04:57 | Speaker 3:

By the way, disappointment in my shower maybe is that I feel like could be a show title.

00:04:57 - 00:06:15 | Speaker 2:

When we dial up a little bit earlier than usual. I bring a different kind of humor to the show. It's more of a laugh at him kind of humor as I struggle my way through sentences. But no, something finally happened that's been threatening to happen for quite some time. When we moved into this house, the showerhead situation in my bathroom was like both more elaborate than it needed to be, but not super high quality, which is it's one of those shower heads that has a dual head on it. It has a regular shower head that is, you know, remains up above my head on the shower wall. But it also has a hose coming out of it for a handheld showerhead device, which is great for – I don't usually use it for much more than cleaning the shower, but it's wonderful to have it. And then there's like a kind of a – I guess a valve, right, a three-way valve attached to it so I can use one of the showerheads, the other showerhead, or sometimes both, which is such a waste of water. But I would be lying to you if I told you there weren't times where I was coming in, really working out in the yard. And I just was like really looking forward to a shower and maybe like blasting both of those for a little bit to really get the dirt out. It's a psychological thing. But every time I go to move the shower head, the one that stays up there, I could just feel the casing crack a little bit. It's not made of like chrome. It's made of plastic that is painted to look like chrome in places.

00:06:16 - 00:06:20 | Speaker 1:

And I can always feel like I'm sure that's definitely a very durable product.

00:06:20 - 00:06:55 | Speaker 2:

you're describing yeah exactly and then when i went to uh move it today like just first thing in the morning bleary eyed as you can tell from my sentence structure today and i just like today was the day that at 8 a.m or whatever i go to move that thing i hear a crack and then i take a shower with water not just coming down on me but also shooting directly up into the ceiling and then back down on me so i'm like i'll do this once but now i gotta go to the hardware store today i'd love to be able to just rebuy the device that holds the two shower heads like the valve mechanism but i probably have to buy a whole new showerhead i'm guessing are you going to go with

00:06:55 - 00:07:06 | Speaker 1:

something kind of like fancy like this that's got a lot of different things going on or are you going to go back to just the old tried and true you know just one kind of showerhead to rule them all

00:07:06 - 00:07:12 | Speaker 2:

yeah i would believe it or not even though it's again i call it's like an extravagance except

00:07:12 - 00:07:27 | Speaker 1:

it's a cheapo extravagance i mean you'll be shocked at the i mean inflation is what it is but things like shower heads particularly like fancy ones are depending on which one you go for i mean they're they're they're weirdly i would say affordable oh weirdly affordable i thought

00:07:27 - 00:07:40 | Speaker 2:

you're gonna say expensive because i felt like one time years ago i went to buy a shower head and i was like oh really just for like my options at a like at an ace true value or something so i wasn't at one of the big box stores um and i don't remember by the way i want to let you know that i

00:07:40 - 00:07:57 | Speaker 1:

am loading in one hour of the home depot theme song right now somebody has put that on youtube And while we're talking, I have been just doing this on a muted basis. So the next time you talk about being either next time we relozer your expectations or do or getting more done, we will have the proper music.

00:07:58 - 00:08:03 | Speaker 2:

Could you just make a one hour mix of people singing Ace is the place with the hardware?

00:08:03 - 00:08:36 | Speaker 1:

You know, that's that's a really great point. We are always looking to differentiate ourselves in the podcast space and maybe being the podcast that has the theme of every, you know, fairly widely distributed home improvement or, you know, home product place. If we could have the the Ace is the place with a helpful hardware folks. We have the Home Depot doers getting more done. Does Lowe's? I mean, Lowe's has to have one. They're a major chain. But again, they're they're really the Pepsi to the Coke that is Home Depot in that I can't tell you what the Lowe's theme is. And forget about Menards.

00:08:38 - 00:08:44 | Speaker 2:

Ooh, I've never been to a Menards. Hey, this is actually maybe slightly more interesting than wherever I was taking us.

00:08:45 - 00:08:47 | Speaker 1:

The skyrocketing costs of shower heads.

00:08:49 - 00:09:01 | Speaker 2:

I love that book. This, you know, obviously about, was it about a year ago that that Home Depot theme was like just being memed all over the place, especially on TikTok? And, you know, it was just all over the place, inescapable.

00:09:01 - 00:09:22 | Speaker 1:

The big thing was following, it was a lot of times young people, particularly young women, like following their dad getting to the airport four hours early and then running kind of like a sort of military style operation of the family going on a trip with the Home Depot music underneath. Because it just seems to work with like people, particularly dads of a certain age, being overly dad-ish.

00:09:22 - 00:09:32 | Speaker 2:

And of course, we probably at some point even mentioned the videos of like, I don't know if it was one guy or several people like going into the Home Depot stores and like playing the song over the loudspeaker sometimes on their own.

00:09:33 - 00:09:59 | Speaker 1:

Right, or playing it on actually a bunch of like garbage cans. Right. Items in the Home Depot that you can kind of turn into musical instruments. By the way, Andrew, I have been lied to by whoever put up this one hour. Helping families around the country stay warm inside this winter without having to. So it's one hour of the Home Depot theme song with some janky ads jammed in. Not today, Satan. Not today. We're going to have to just live with, let's see, how much do we get? Four minutes and 11.

00:10:00 - 00:10:54 | Speaker 2:

seconds of the home depot theme song going forward is this one of the ads that is in there that would be i don't mind that jingle by the way i'm a fan jingle yeah but you were starting to say this may be more interesting than showerhead prices and again i'm sorry if i over promised there but i was going to say it was very clear in the early part of this baseball season when i was listening or the previous baseball season that when i was listening to a lot of games on the radio that the Home Depot was acknowledging that in their ads and their radio ads because they would start with that song. And then that there is, I think you would probably recognize the voice. They've been using the same voice for quite some time for these ads. And he comes on and says, you know that song by now, but did you know? And then goes on to make a pitch for like various things at Home Depot. And I thought it was like a very, without mentioning or re-meming, I thought it was a very kind of knowing nod, knowing. Yeah, if not subtle and knowing nod towards the fact that they were being meme-ified

00:10:54 - 00:11:41 | Speaker 1:

But we're getting no closer to the Lowe's theme song Andrew, which if I remember right, let's test this out really quick I'm putting Lowe's theme song Into the internet and if I remember last time when I clicked on this it was just the Home Depot theme song This is the Lowe's theme song. This is has been viewed 276 thousand times this was put up Three years ago and apologies if it starts with a commercial which is yeah yeah somebody got it wrong but but yes but this tells me that the lowe's theme song is so under the the the q score for the lowe's theme song the awareness of it is so low that people think it's just the home depot song do they have their own song and if not why don't they okay well i was

00:11:41 - 00:11:49 | Speaker 2:

gonna ask you yeah like do they even definitely have a song or do they just take like kind of of generic music and throw it in the background of their commercials.

00:11:49 - 00:12:12 | Speaker 1:

I can't seem, does Lowe's have a theme song? Okay, let's see here what the internet's saying. I'm getting the same file. I'm gonna click on another one. So the first one that I clicked on already, the Lowe's theme song was posted by Anonymous Pepper 2012. Now I'm gonna click on whatever FajitaFool6124 has put up. This has 220,000 views, Lowe's theme song.

00:12:12 - 00:12:25 | Speaker 2:

Oh yeah, okay, okay. Okay, yeah, I've heard this. I think we might have even taken this path before. Now I know why that Pepper wanted to stay anonymous. It's embarrassing to the whole family, the whole Pepper family.

00:12:30 - 00:12:58 | Speaker 1:

Wisdom from the mouth of a fajita fool. 6-1-2-4, Andrew. June 7th, 2021. But again, I feel like my initial kind of theory holds here, which is that, you know, take a hundred people off the street and play them the Home Depot theme song and they'll go Home Depot. And if you play them the Lowe's theme song, they'll go off brand, like off brand foot stomp music from that era in Seattle where everyone had big hats on and we're saying, hey, ho.

00:13:00 - 00:13:01 | Speaker 2:

Exactly.

00:13:01 - 00:13:03 | Speaker 1:

Did you see the head in the huh?

00:13:03 - 00:13:38 | Speaker 2:

did you see the description not even clicking on it but in the in the search results when you type you know you type in lowe's theme song and you get that first anonymous pepper 2012 result it says the lowe's theme song but it's actually the home depot according to the um the short description offered by google via youtube it just says in all caps i have some other videos guys some of them aren't bad in all caps that whole sentence i noticed that as well and it felt a little it felt a little defensive some of them aren't bad they've received the feedback i think

00:13:38 - 00:15:00 | Speaker 1:

um let's see here uh we are we're i think we got time for this because i don't actually know if this is will this will create a lot of content but it's certainly something that's been living in my brain for the last week andrew which is uh as i mentioned the top of the show i've actually been gone for a while i want to say one other thing too and this will probably extend this conversation i am very heartened by the fact that when i am not here down here in in southern washington perched high above the mighty columbia even when i'm at a really cute airbnb with my really cute girlfriend and doing fun things when i get home i feel actually very happy to be here and even though again i've it's a the house is still pretty much it's giving andrew it's giving uh you know hovel it's giving uh shack that needs improving we still don't have a floor there's a lot still to do and there's no heat it's it's it's not done yet that being said standing here because i've got the sit-stand desk talking to you staring at the river it feels really nice to be here and i'm still even though i've had this house for a few years and i've been living here full time for i don't know six eight months it's nice to get home and feel like okay yeah this is where i live and i'm happy that this is where i live because i just didn't know how how that was gonna go i've never you know living i've been living alone for a while but like this feels even more

00:15:00 - 00:15:13 | Speaker 2:

like living alone because i'm not in the heart of like portland oregon where i can walk to things and a lot of my friends and folks are nearby this is really kind of out here it's really just kind of me and and i'm i'm happy to know i'm happy to find out that i actually like being here

00:15:13 - 00:16:22 | Speaker 1:

yeah there's only been a couple of times in my life where i have been living in a place where i realized when i got home from a trip like yours of course i guess i've never really gone on a trip like yours i've never gone to leavenworth to report for cbs but you know sure coming back few have coming back from any of those high profile assignments you can get right um who hasn't um that feeling though of coming home to a place and realizing you don't want to be coming home there for me it was less about the actual structure the surroundings but there's been a couple of places with like once where I was living someplace more rural than I wanted to be and like kind of coming home from a trip that maybe took me to a city felt like a bit of a letdown or I've mentioned on the show that I went through a period in Los Angeles where I just just intensely missed seattle and so therefore it wasn't a statement so much about la but just you know my i was working hard there and also really missed everything about seattle and i remember taking a couple of trips up to seattle to like you know do a tbtl related uh project with you and then going back to la and feeling like i'm leaving where i want to be behind that's a pretty tough feeling luckily i haven't had it too much in my life but it sucks so i've been gone for a

00:16:22 - 00:18:28 | Speaker 2:

while and one of the things I was wondering about was my garbage because they take the garbage on Thursday here and last like Wednesday or something because I think I went to Chicago on I went to Chicago on Wednesday somehow my garbage I I was this is actually maybe now been this maybe went on for three weeks Andrew I the time is is sort of confusing and blending together in my mind but here's the point of the whole story they missed my garbage pickup last week so i put my garbage i think this is actually i'm on week three of this so like three weeks ago i put my garbage out uh the night before it was to be taken and then they didn't take it away they didn't like empty it and i let a few days go by because i wasn't generating that much garbage and i just thought so basically i have to kind of wheel my garbage can kind of up this my exact driveway there's a sign that says end of county road the my driveway is the beginning of not the county road so i wheel my garbage can kind of up to where these mailboxes are and where the other folks bring their garbage cans out and sometimes i'm too lazy to get it like right away after it's been emptied so a few days went by i went up to get it and i realized oh it's still got all the stuff in it and also my neighbors had all the stuff in it and i was like i should probably call these folks and say you missed my garbage but then i ended up going out of town for a week like a solid week wherein i was not home or generating any new garbage and would you believe last night when i got home andrew and i was kind of you know doing a little perimeter check i go up to the garbage can it's still in there as is my neighbors and so now that is how many pickups missed two i think either one or two but then one of one or both of them were essentially immaterial to me because I wasn't even here right now just as I was about to dial you up to start the show today guess who comes driving on down the lane it's the garbage truck and they empty my garbage can oh great so this is my dilemma do I call them and be like you missed my garbage pickup one or two weeks now granted I wasn't here it didn't negatively impact my life but it feels

00:18:28 - 00:18:42 | Speaker 1:

wrong I mean only if you think that you're good I mean I wouldn't just call them to scold them which I don't think you're going to take the time to do anyway. But are you thinking that you might be able to get some money back on your bill? Are you charged weekly? I assume you are.

00:18:42 - 00:20:07 | Speaker 2:

I'm charged monthly, but I'm paying ostensibly for four garbage pickups a month. And it's looking like I've gotten a maximum of two, if not maybe only one. So it's kind of it just feels to me like I'm paying for something that I'm not receiving, even though, to be totally honest with you, it has no negative impact on my life. I left, the garbage can was full, I came home, and within 12 hours, the garbage can was empty. So, like, nothing has really happened to me, but I am mildly annoyed that I have to pay these folks to come do this thing. And by the way, this is the second time in a few months where they've just, like, just not come out and gotten it for whatever reason. And when I called, the people were nice when I called, but they didn't. I expected it to be more of a crisis there at Waste Management when I called them. i expected them to just like just to hear weeping and gnashing of teeth and rending of garments and it seemed like a fairly low priority to the to the gal who answered the phone so i don't really know what my conversation would be like hi um this is luke burbank out at and i give my address and then um so my garbage pickup was missed i was out of town but they i came home and the garbage was still there okay so we need to send someone to get it well no they've gotten it now but i want you to know there was a period of time where there was garbage in that can when there shouldn't have been and I was paying for it does that sound as unhinged as it sounds to me

00:20:07 - 00:20:16 | Speaker 1:

when I say it out loud I would say your lack of a grasp on the details is gonna work against you and I'm not even saying that to dunk on you but is this your way

00:20:16 - 00:20:23 | Speaker 2:

of telling me I need to start photographing my garbage and tweeting it to the local municipalities like you were doing for a while I still take a

00:20:23 - 00:21:28 | Speaker 1:

photo of my garbage can every night I will send you the photo of my garbage can last night which was difficult to take because it was very dark outside and uh my camera wasn't working right and so i had to wait for a car going by with uh headlights in order to light up my garbage can that's commitment and if you think i'm lying i am hitting send now oh i don't think i don't think anyone doubted you if i'm being totally honest but uh yeah i still take a picture of the garbage can because every time i leave my garbage outside i think if this is the week that they skip me and again they in this new house which i've been at for a year and a half they've only missed me once and then they they did make it up they they came they sent out a special crew I assume people like slid down poles while red lights flashed and they sent out a truck and they did empty my my bin um I but but in all seriousness first of all knowing everything that you got going on on your plate right now it just doesn't seem like that great of a priority because you're not it's really not something but you should keep an eye on it if you think it's gonna like for me if I was in your situation right now I'd be like well that's lucky I wasn't here and now it's empty that's good I can enjoy my empty garbage can maybe even play some Oscar the Grouch I don't know if you do

00:21:28 - 00:21:52 | Speaker 2:

that or not but by the way your can looks like it's about to it looks like it could become anthropomorphized at any moment there's just the lid is just ever so slightly you know you have maybe 5% more refuse in there than like fits perfectly so the lid is up just enough that I could see that lid start talking yeah going what's the photo about bud

00:21:52 - 00:22:17 | Speaker 1:

take a picture it'll last longer oh you are um that's the voice you know that now that you say that that was another reason why i felt it would be good to take a picture of my garbage can because i've never had my garbage can slightly overflowed like that and you know what's in there is i'll bet you if i were to go out there right now this photo is like 12 hours old or whatever if i was to go out there right now but you'd be open even more because what's in there along with just like

00:22:17 - 00:22:29 | Speaker 2:

a bunch of garbage we had is this big like a bunch of those like little alligators that if you get them wet they grow to like four times the size why are you throwing those out that and yeast

00:22:29 - 00:23:33 | Speaker 1:

it's yeast week here um but uh no you know what it is is i had this big like i guess we would call it a comforter that had actual down in it like actual feathers in the back of my car for the longest time and i sort of need it when i'm transporting a whole bunch of stuff it like kind of I use it as a wedge to keep like tables and whatnot from like crashing through my back window but it was like some used blanket that I've had forever and there's been a hole in it for years now and whenever I use it slowly leaking yes feathers and I for I mean Luke I mean probably since we've had that car I'm saying like five years now I thought I gotta replace this thing that hole's getting worse but like the feathers just get worse and worse until the last couple of weeks feather i pull it out of my car and feathers just i'm standing in a cloud of feathers raining down on me like a hallmark movie and i was finally like randy johnson pitching in that game do you know what just occurred to me recently i realized recently that he was not a mariner when that happened yeah i didn't realize i always pictured that in a in a um mariner's jersey

00:23:33 - 00:25:00 | Speaker 2:

i don't obviously support the wanton uh killing of animals or animals dying unnecessarily ever in fact i was talking to becca we were driving back from leavenworth last night and we saw a single pony standing outside in the snow uh in kind of a yard that looked like maybe had seen better days and i was like i have to i can't really let my brain spend too much time thinking about the discomfort of animals worldwide like i saw this video i saw a tiktok video of a guy Riding his bike across Africa I don't know if I brought this up on the show or not But this guy Who, it's pretty entertaining what he's doing I think he's an American guy, but he's riding his bike Through Africa, and he Kind of films a lot of it on his phone And it's just very interesting to see all these places he goes And the various situations he gets in But he was going through some kind of real small village And it was The road was actually paved, but it was It would appear that a lot of the people have to use Like donkeys to pull a cart to kind of get stuff around because a lot of people don't have cars there or even motorcycles and just this one donkey was was being was pulling this cart with a bunch of stuff on it and like a couple of guys and the donkey wasn't huge and i don't even think the donkey looked like they were struggling but the guy was kind of doing that thing like he had like a whip and he was he wasn't like wailing away on the animal he was just kind of like you know doing that thing where he's like just giving it some little taps like hey man keep pulling or whatever Or...

00:25:00 - 00:25:54 | Speaker 1:

And I don't know why that just like dropped me to my knees. I was like, this is one donkey that the guy, by the way, the video wasn't like, check out what they're doing to this donkey. The video was like, I had some great coffee in this town or whatever. This was a passing thing. I was like, this is one donkey in one African town. And we have an entire world where animals are, a lot of animals are not having a great time. So all of that is to say, I'm not psyched about that bird getting killed by Randy Johnson, But it is one of the most bitching moments in the history of sport Like that is so hard to do And for people that don't know what we're talking about There was an actual Major League Baseball game Where Randy Johnson, one time Seattle Mariner Pitched a pitch that happened to obliterate a bird That just happened to be flying in between the pitcher's mound and home plate And the bird exploded in a It looked like the back of Andrew's car

00:25:54 - 00:25:56 | Speaker 4:

Yes, it definitely did

00:25:56 - 00:26:28 | Speaker 1:

and uh and like it's one of those i mean if you if you tried it 15 000 times you could never reproduce that it and again i don't like that it led to the death of an innocent bird but it's just just the the unlikeliness of it is and also randy johnson was a flamethrower randy johnson's whole thing it wasn't like you know if like if charlie huff had hit this bird the bird would have been like what the hell dude right like it was like a randy johnson pitch is the worst pitch to be hit

00:26:28 - 00:26:35 | Speaker 4:

by if you're a bird marco gonzalez is the easiest the bird would just be like the bird leans in

00:26:35 - 00:26:49 | Speaker 1:

like thai france the bird just gives it the old don baylor when he was a yankee and just like takes it right off the shoulder but yeah anyway that that's so you so you've tossed the comforter out But it's also slightly overfilled your situation.

00:26:49 - 00:27:36 | Speaker 4:

Yeah, and so I'm guessing that having sat in that garbage can overnight, it probably absorbs some of the moisture in the air and probably is maybe even puffing up even more. And I've never had a garbage can that is even slightly overflowing in this house before. And I don't know, like, I just, I don't know, man. Living in my old apartment where I had so many issues with garbage collection, I'm very obviously paranoid now, and I'm always waiting for them to tell me, like, oh, you broke the rules here so we couldn't empty it, or we're charging you more. Or I accidentally put a bunch of ash. I didn't accidentally do it, but I did it not knowing you're not supposed to. I put a bunch of ash in my compost bin, my mini little compost bin. You're not supposed to do that? No. Well, I know that you're not supposed to do it with sawdust because our mutual friend Roden had done that and then got the no sawdust written on the top of his bins. What's wrong?

00:27:37 - 00:27:39 | Speaker 1:

Sawdust seems like a very inert product.

00:27:39 - 00:28:05 | Speaker 4:

I would bathe in it. I think it's about the garbage collectors not bathing in it. I think these things are so, like, I think they catch the air and just, like, turn into a cloud around them while you're emptying it. That's my guess. And so I was cleaning out this. Wow. Yeah, this is something that I won't go on and on about. But I didn't know that fireplaces, or at least the fireplace in our house, has, like, a trap below it in the basement in this little, like, what I call the boiler room where we have our furnace and whatever.

00:28:05 - 00:28:09 | Speaker 1:

That's where you sell your penny stocks to confused older ladies.

00:28:11 - 00:28:18 | Speaker 2:

What's his name? Ribisi? Is he? Giovanni Ribisi Giovanni Ribisi I got half of it um I think you got the hard well I don't know I

00:28:18 - 00:28:22 | Speaker 1:

think those are equally tough names yeah let's just say you got the hard part but I don't know

00:28:22 - 00:29:39 | Speaker 4:

Giovanni that ain't easy either but anyway um there's a little trap door down in our basement like kind of built into the wall and it looks like a little secret door it's a metal door with a latch that you open up and it's where the ash from the fireplace upstairs collects and we did burn a few fires last year but I'm guessing this was not emptied before we moved in because it was i opened up this little door for the first time and it was a wall of ash and this cavity is deep and i spent a big i i was like oh i have 10 minutes i'll try tackling this project now and it ended up being a big thing last weekend as i'm uh tramping in and out of the house and the rain covered in ash which is turning into black it was a bad time to pick up this project but i also found some weird things i found an old spark plug in there i found tons of nails so somebody is burning a lot of like construction debris in there i found a lot of human bones and skulls all kinds of stuff back there um so uh anyway i dumped some of that into my um into my compost bin and then after i did that i looked up am i supposed to do that i don't want to be hollered at i don't want to be a rodent with a big like scarlet letter of no ash written on my compost bin so i looked it up and it said no you cannot put ash in here bag it up and put it in your garbage so then i had to like Like, I felt so bad. I was like, maybe if I just bury it at the bottom, nobody will say anything.

00:29:39 - 00:29:40 | Speaker 1:

I would have just covered it with some sawdust.

00:29:40 - 00:29:41 | Speaker 4:

Yeah, right?

00:29:42 - 00:29:44 | Speaker 1:

Make them mad about something different.

00:29:44 - 00:29:59 | Speaker 4:

I ended up tromping out there and, like, emptying it out in the corner of our yard. Like, I don't even think I would have gotten in trouble. But that's how scared I am of them finding any reason to tell me that they can't empty my bins. How big is your bin, by the way? I've talked too much. How big is your garbage bin?

00:30:00 - 00:30:05 | Speaker 1:

let's see i'm looking at it it's it's almost the exact size of yours and i will say you have access

00:30:05 - 00:30:10 | Speaker 2:

to the whole thing mine's got a governor so i've only got this mine does not mine does not oh that's

00:30:10 - 00:31:54 | Speaker 1:

and truthfully when when this if and when this project is ever done and i can just like live at this house uh i don't think i even need as much garbage can as they're giving me i don't know if there's a smaller one but i just i'm but one man andrew so i just don't like the other problem is I have, there's two kinds of garbage or two kinds of like refuse that get created here. There's just like regular, you know, kitchen garbage, which there's not a ton of. And then there's just like all this other weird stuff that I can't, it's either too big and unwieldy to put in the garbage can or it's just like, there's, I'm making a lot of dump runs these days. And sometimes I'll take all of the garbage to the dump. In fact, you know, I think that might've played, played into this whole thing. My dad and I made a dump run and we just took, cause I have a bunch of garbage cans, you that are just kind of extras we took all of them including my regular garbage and that also i mean it adds nothing to my cost so it's sort of because there's a minimum so it's like it makes sense but again some part of me was like you're welcome county just doing your job here taking the garbage myself to the dump even though i'm paying i mean i got a lot of issues andrew which is i think the takeaway from this i got a lot of petty resentments for somebody who is uh at times not great with sort of fine personal finance decisions and you know i'll sometimes spend money on things that i haven't fully thought through uh when i feel like i've paid for something and i'm not getting it even if it's one quarter of 19 a month i think my garbage is like 20 bucks a month or something so the simple math on that i believe would be what five dollars like there's something about feeling like i paid for something and they did not deliver that just drives me through the roof proof even though there are many many other times where i will um you know not be as careful with

00:31:54 - 00:32:19 | Speaker 2:

five dollars as i probably should be yeah right or 40 or 60 or like what you know we'll spend this in a certain careless like frivolous i'm gonna tell you about my fabergé egg collection i've been building those are like 62 a pop if you're lucky but uh yeah no i i just think in this case though you don't have a good enough handle on what actually like when they know i need and you're not going to give anything back so save your frustration for when it matters stuff your sorry's in the sack

00:32:19 - 00:33:13 | Speaker 1:

i believe um that was who was it marcus aurelius you um you said something name of the garbage pickup company sorry's in a sack um no but you actually you you you said something uh that was that was you spoke the exact language i needed you to speak to me which was basically bro you have plenty going on right now this is a low priority and that's exactly true because you We're doing, obviously, TBTL today. We're going to be actually recording tomorrow's show because tomorrow at 6 a.m. I'll be flying to L.A. again to do more interviewing with the comedian Taylor Tomlinson. Tonight we're doing Live Wire at Revolution Hall. Maybe we'll see some folks down there. I somehow managed to get an interview with a local magazine in Portland called 1889, wedged in this afternoon between Live Wire prep and trying to drive to Portland. So you're right.

00:33:13 - 00:33:15 | Speaker 2:

What's it as an interview for Livewire?

00:33:15 - 00:35:24 | Speaker 1:

It is a magazine. I think the state of Oregon was founded in 1889. So the sort of like magazine about the state of Oregon is called 1889. And they're doing a story about Livewire's 20th anniversary, which is going to be this spring. And I did something kind of dumb, which was, well, first, I agreed to do this interview a couple days ago when I was in Leavenworth and filming. So I had to move it. and what I really should have done was said I felt really bad because I woke up on it was Tuesday morning and I got up and I realized oh I'm supposed to be doing this thing this afternoon ironically I could have done the interview after all was said and done but at the moment I was like I don't really know my schedule I've committed to this thing but it's going to probably be a scheduling problem so I I asked to move it but I felt bad moving it an entire week do you ever do that where like you have to move something and somehow the further out you move it it feels like the worse the transgression is that's how my brain works like if i'm saying oh i'm so sorry i actually have double booked today but i could do it in two days that feels like an okay thing but if i say i'm double booked i can do it in three weeks that sort of feels like um even more rude so i sort of threw today out as an option i was like i'm so sorry i i didn't read my schedule correctly but i could maybe do it at 1 30 on thursday or any time next week i felt like i'm really open uh next week and then the person who's interviewing me said great 1 30 on thursday works perfect i was like god damn it why did i even put that out there as i that was a fake offer i was i was i was really hoping you'd go well next week is great so and all that is to say i got a lot going on and uh haggling with the garbage folks around here about something that didn't hurt me at all is not a priority so thank you for thank you for giving me that clarity especially since you probably not going to win that one and also i mean like seriously like what are they gonna do like do you how do we even prove it happened again this is really andrew what this is in a roundabout way is an argument for your policy of photographing our garbage every week just send them a photo of my garbage can see what happens with a newspaper with a proof of life newspaper with the date next to it to just show exactly when it happened.

00:35:33 - 00:35:37 | Speaker 2:

Hey, let's thank some of

00:35:37 - 00:36:18 | Speaker 1:

our donors. These are the generous folks who are keeping TBTL in business with their donations, and we are incredibly grateful for that. We really are. Like, we had a meeting yesterday, you, me, and TVTL employee numero uno, John Sklaroff. We were talking about all kinds of things, and our kind of cross-promotions were rolling out with some of the other shows that we like, and our friends, and this, that, and the other. And I just had this moment of thinking, maybe it's because I had you both on speakerphone and Becca could kind of hear the conversation, but I was like, damn, this is a real thing we're doing. like this is a real like we're we're real we're real business boys you know well we start every

00:36:18 - 00:36:24 | Speaker 2:

meeting by saying we're real business boys i mean that really sort of cements it yes oh yay oh yay

00:36:24 - 00:36:45 | Speaker 1:

the gathering of the real business boys has begun but i really did have this feeling of like you know this is a this is a pretty a pretty amazing thing that we have been lucky enough to be a part of and it really is so so little of it is actually about us and so much of it is really about the community of 10s and folks like Burley McIntyre in Seattle, Washington.

00:36:45 - 00:36:47 | Speaker 2:

Thank you, Burley. Long time. What up, Burley?

00:36:47 - 00:36:56 | Speaker 1:

Yeah, long time supporter of the program and friend of the show. Thanks, Burley. Also, Dana Hoyle, right down there in Portland, Oregon.

00:36:56 - 00:36:57 | Speaker 2:

Thank you, Dana.

00:36:58 - 00:37:14 | Speaker 1:

Dana, are you coming to Live Wire tonight at Rev Hall? I hope you are. If not, I'm going to need a written note from your doctor. Sorry, I don't make the rules. Doug Rademacher is in St. Louis Louis, M.O.

00:37:14 - 00:37:17 | Speaker 2:

I was going to say, say it, say it I have to

00:37:17 - 00:38:34 | Speaker 1:

Sean Moss is in Seattle Washington, I have to say that too I watched this I mentioned this yesterday to you on the show, Andrew about the documentary that Becca and I were watching about Leavenworth where the guy said, it's all of the senses and then he just said, etc, etc there was also just some really high quality what i consider to be older washingtonian accent people think you know one of the things about the state of washington is it's considered to be accentless like unless you talk about the word bagel or milk i think i was part of a story once i was interviewed by um somebody at kuow about like do people in the northwest have an accent and i think people my of my age generally kind of don't but a few generations before us there's a heavy duty washington we live in washington and restaurant it was this woman who was talking about how she and her family moved to washington and then she was working in a restaurant and then we had an apartment above the restaurant here in leavenworth washington it was like wow this is a whole like there was a time when a lot of people in the state of washington or excuse me Washington. We're talking in a way that was very specific to the state of Washington.

00:38:34 - 00:38:38 | Speaker 2:

It's just kind of gone away. And you are a bagel person, right? Or you're somewhere

00:38:38 - 00:39:12 | Speaker 1:

in between bagel and bagel. I actually intentionally try to say bagel because I don't want to have the accent where I say bagel. Right. I think that the Seattle I overdo it because I'm trying to not sound like bagel bagel bagel bagel boogle. Right. Trying to correct my accent. I don't know where Sean Moss comes down on the whole bagel, bagel, boggle, boogle thing, but we know where Sean comes down on TBTL support, and it's squarely on the right side of history, so thank you, Sean. Thanks also to Judy Bruce out there in Mukul, T.O. Washington.

00:39:13 - 00:39:13 | Speaker 2:

Culturally Edmonds?

00:39:14 - 00:39:28 | Speaker 1:

I mean, it's honestly, I would argue, it's more culturally Edmonds than that Arby's that you love to talk about. I need to check back in on that Week in Review video. I want to see what Amina, our friend Amina Al-Sadi, had to say on it, Because I listen, I don't I don't know what I'm going to say.

00:39:28 - 00:39:35 | Speaker 2:

I think you're going to like what I'm going to say. You're going to just like you're going to wish you were there because I'm just sort of nodding along, you know, and laughing.

00:39:35 - 00:39:45 | Speaker 1:

But I can't. I wonder what I'm going to think of the statement. Muckle Teo is more culturally Edmonds than the Arby's that's nominally in Edmonds. We'll leave. We'll leave that to Judy Bruce to unpack.

00:39:45 - 00:40:04 | Speaker 2:

Yeah, I thought that that was what I'm going to was arguing that Muckle Teo is culturally more Edmonds. But I might be confusing my Washington towns now that I say that my face is getting hot. I'm like, wait a second. Am I confusing Muckle Teo with something else we were talking about? about my sense of geography is so bad and I've lived here since 2009.

00:40:05 - 00:40:17 | Speaker 1:

We also want to thank Amber Doherty in Baltimore, Maryland. Thank you, Amber. Why am I taking this here, Andrew? One time home of quarterback Joe Flacco.

00:40:17 - 00:40:20 | Speaker 2:

Yeah, right? It's amazing.

00:40:20 - 00:41:34 | Speaker 1:

I was watching some stuff, I was supposed to be prepping for Livewire and I kind of was, but I was also bouncing back and forth between other online content. And there's a comedian named Stavros Halkness. I don't know exactly how to say his last name, but he's from Baltimore. And I just think he's really, really funny. A really funny comedian who I'm a big fan. He might be my favorite stand-up comedian right now, but he's from Baltimore. And he has a character named Ronnie that he does who's just deeply Baltimore. Oh, yes. I've heard him on The Levitard Show. Yes, yes. And he's just really funny. um and uh he was but he wasn't in the character of ronnie but he was just being interviewed i think by the pardon my take guys which is another football podcast just talking about what it's like to be a a person from baltimore watching joe flacco have success in cleveland i don't know if this is anything amber doherty cares about but like and he was saying look if you put him behind a good offensive line maybe a joel batonio helmed offensive line he could play till he's 50 like how about a 50 year old joe flacco just like helming the cleveland brown like joe flacco quarterbacking the cleveland browns for roughly nine more seasons i mean would

00:41:34 - 00:42:06 | Speaker 2:

that bring you back i mean that would be amazing i will say this though it's not like and ah geez well you know what no you brought us here i'm not going to apologize for saying for continuing this conversation but it's i mean flacco you know as my friend tiara in baltimore would say it was not elite even when he was her quarterback but like he took them at least to one winning Super Bowl right they beat the 49ers under Flacco I believe and they he might have even taken them to more than one and just won that one so it's not like he was a bust down there I believe what Stavros

00:42:06 - 00:43:20 | Speaker 1:

said is the fun thing about watching Flacco is that a beautiful touchdown pass a pass interference call or the worst interception you've ever seen from equally possible on every play and that's the real true majesty of watching joe flacco in the pocket anyway that's how we like to thank our donors we take their generosity and we turn it into subpar football commentary it's sort of reverse alchemy and that's what we love to do right here on tbtl so thank you so much to all of our donors for making that possible. Hello and welcome to Top Story. A lot was made last week about this announcement that McDonald's is rolling out a new chain of sort of coffee. They're not coffee huts because they're a little bigger than that, although they don't actually have any seating inside. So what do you call a business that's drive-thru only, but is larger than, you know, say like a coffee, a bikini barista type of stand? Like it's something in between a functioning restaurant and like a little tiny shed that has two people making coffee at it.

00:43:20 - 00:43:22 | Speaker 2:

Yeah, it's a drive-thru only beverage shack.

00:43:22 - 00:44:00 | Speaker 1:

Yeah, but they make a variety of things at this. They're announcing that they're going to try to have 10 locations by next summer. um they've got one in the chicago suburbs near their headquarters i don't think i remembered that mcdonald's is headquartered in chicago but i will tell you the biggest mcdonald's i've ever been to the rockin mcdonald's is in chicago it's a hell of a place is it rockin it's rockin my friend i used to rock through there in an uber so so drunk after rossi's just like you know like i would just get in the uber and be like rockin mcdonald's and the guy would just be like yeah I know. I know what we're doing here.

00:44:00 - 00:44:03 | Speaker 2:

I saw it all over your face. I knew it before you knew it. Exactly.

00:44:03 - 00:45:00 | Speaker 1:

It was like you didn't even have to say it. Everything about the way you were carrying yourself said, we need to get this guy through the rockin' McDonald's drive-thru. They're going to have some of these in Texas. Cosmix features four drive-thru lanes, and as I mentioned, no dine-in restaurant. It's going to serve colorful, sugary, caffeinated beverages with names like Sour Cherry Energy Burst, Island Pick-Me-Up Punch. The company said the chain is designed to combat what McDonald's calls it's 3 p.m. slump between lunch and dinner now they like i said the the kind of the the national story on this has been mcdonald's is coming for starbucks but the story out here in portland and in the oregon area is mcdonald's is coming for dutch brothers dude like this is i've talked about dutch brothers kind of a lot on the program because i just didn't realize what a thing it was so i got down here in the kind of greater portland area but for people that that missed those conversations or don't know dutch brothers is one of the most successful business

00:45:00 - 00:46:14 | Speaker 2:

businesses in Oregon I just learned and basically they've got these little it's the same thing they're these little coffee stands I don't think that they offer any kind of dine-in sort of thing but they I mean all of their their coffee products are generally speaking like you know full of like either energy drink or some kind of very brightly colored syrup or candy or whatever I mean to be honest with you it's really not for me like not even from a like I think I'm too good for it or i think it's not healthy it doesn't sound very appealing to me to drink a really really sweet like a big huge very very sweet drink that's just not like something that i enjoy but people seem to because those places have lines like out into the street for the drive-through it's like in and out in that they've always got a couple of people who have like tablets in their hands and are going through the line of people being like what can i get you so that when you get up to the front it's actually goes pretty quickly and clearly mcdonald's noticed this and was like what are because i mean like i said it's it's it's one of them now one of the most successful companies in oregon and i i can't shake the feeling that mcdonald's saw this and thought well uh we could do that and we could do it at scale and we're going to not only steal dutch brothers business

00:46:14 - 00:46:20 | Speaker 1:

but steal the business they were stealing from starbucks yeah well shout out to oregon live for

00:46:20 - 00:46:25 | Speaker 2:

yeah you're right this Mike Mike Rogoway wrote this article yeah and this is the article that

00:46:25 - 00:47:51 | Speaker 1:

you sent me because I'd seen this sort of bopping around I don't know if I cared enough to click on it but when I finally did read one of these articles it was the one you sent me and it seems to get it right it's talking about the competition and you know assumed inspiration from Dutch Brothers I didn't know about Dutch Brothers until you told me about it on this show and I tend to forget that it's not even usually coffee or at least I'm guessing based on the description of these drinks that a lot of them are like energy drinks blue rebel shark attack dinosaur egg i'm reading from the these are all things at dutch brothers those were dutch brothers compared to the sour energy burst and island pick-me-up punch of the new cosmics um but um yeah so it doesn't even i think you're right like i think mcdonald's went after starbucks about 10 years ago because i remember i was in la when these were popping up um with their mick cafes right now that's like a i know that there are drive-through only starbucks and i don't i shouldn't speak to starbucks culture because i am rarely in one but i do think that starbucks sort of introduced this you know kind of the the cafe culture to the rest of the country the coffee cafe culture along with drive-through but like you're right if if this is a model where it's just drive through and it's these kinds of crazy ass energy colorful sugar packed drinks um this sounds definitely like a direct attack on dutch brothers not the mick cafe of the past and yeah

00:47:51 - 00:48:36 | Speaker 2:

the the the folks around here who watch these things are like this is actually kind of potentially bad news for dutch brothers it's like they were kind of they were filling uh i guess you would call it a need out here for people that wanted to have i mean it's it's just it's also so it's so outside of like what i ever personally and none of this is me saying i'm quote unquote too good for this it's just i just don't drink energy drinks like i don't know why i mean energy energy drinks are such a huge huge segment of the like of the you know non-alcoholic drink and sometimes i guess the alcoholic drink if you're throwing a red bull and vodka together but like it's such a huge sector of the of the market that i just i tried a celsius the other day have you ever Have you ever tried a Celsius?

00:48:36 - 00:48:38 | Speaker 1:

No, never heard of it.

00:48:38 - 00:49:02 | Speaker 2:

I forget where I was, but they had them. Maybe it was like a hotel, and when you check in, there's that little cooler or a place where you can get Advil and different things. I had heard that Celsius is low-cal, but it gives you a little pick-me-up, and also it's actually supposed to speed up your metabolism. I think that was the sales pitch. So I was like, I don't know, I'll check out a Celsius. I took two sips of it, and it felt like I had smoked three cigarettes.

00:49:02 - 00:49:05 | Speaker 1:

You could feel the impact on your body immediately?

00:49:05 - 00:49:37 | Speaker 2:

know if it was psychosomatic because i never drink i mean i drink a lot of coffee so you could argue that coffee is an energy drink of a different you know flavor or something i don't know if i was just like it's here's what i'll say celsius seemed like the most public radio of energy drinks yeah like it doesn't have a skull on the can it's a fairly like it's kind of a fairly understated like label and branding it's just a solid color and it says celsius somehow the look of it made Made me think this might be the energy drink for me.

00:49:38 - 00:50:00 | Speaker 1:

You know, and that's exactly what the people in the boardroom wanted, right? They're like, well, what we need is like we have certain people who and I know you're claiming not to. But we have people we have a segment of the population that sort of look down their nose at energy drink culture, which I don't actually think is that rude. I mean, energy drink for the most part. I mean, Red Bull has a pretty subtle labeling or whatever. But you're like the month.

00:50:00 - 00:50:27 | Speaker 3:

Monster energy drinks looks like some some pterodactyl rip its claws through the can and like all that. And it's also a mark of the beast. I don't know if you've seen that YouTube video as well. Of course, everybody knows that. But anyway, so I, you know, definitely somebody sounds like was in a room saying like, we're going to find the we're going to sell energy drinks to the people who think they're above energy drinks, which is not the work from a marketing standpoint, not the worst thing in the world. And they got you at least to try it.

00:50:27 - 00:50:44 | Speaker 2:

Yeah, it worked. I invested a total of like $5.80 into the Celsius company. So, I mean, you know, you can get everyone in America who's energy drink skeptical to buy one of your products. You're probably actually doing some decent business.

00:50:45 - 00:50:52 | Speaker 3:

I had also forgotten because I'm sure you've told me this before in our discussions of Dutch Brothers or you tutoring me on the culture of Dutch Brothers.

00:50:53 - 00:50:53 | Speaker 2:

I consider it mentoring.

00:50:54 - 00:51:18 | Speaker 3:

I forgot that they're called broistas. I mean, you are talking about a culture thing here. Oh, actually, I don't think I knew that. The organ chain's irreverent branding and engaging broistas have won a devoted young clientele. So that's, you know, Dutch brothers, so you get broistas. But, like, also, like, bro culture is a real thing. Like, you can't say that there isn't a cultural and identification aspect to this.

00:51:19 - 00:51:51 | Speaker 2:

I'm just going to generalize here, and we've got lots of listeners in the Northwest. I mean, that's where most of our listeners are, and we've got lots of listeners down in Oregon and southern Washington where Dutch Brothers is particularly popular. So I don't want to yuck your yum, but it definitely seems like it's for the kind of person – how do I say this in a family-friendly way? The kind of person who would definitely consider having some kind of a decal on their truck or car that showed someone's hand doing what's called the shocker. And just –

00:51:51 - 00:51:57 | Speaker 3:

I was wondering, like, why are you ear-muffing this for the young ones? I was wondering where you were going with this.

00:51:57 - 00:52:44 | Speaker 2:

There's a certain kind of car that has a lot of tint on it that will probably have some sort of a thing about the shocker. And if you don't know what that is, that's fine. Good job. And if you do, you know. It's a certain kind of, like, I don't know how to say it. A person who really is really embracing maybe what they perceive to be a quite freestyle lifestyle. and part of that it turns out is uh you know having a rebel shark attack on a tuesday at 2 p.m and hey everybody do what feels fun to them but i i have been to exactly one dutch bros in my life and i got becca and i were actually in all of all places we were in boise which is where our good friend broadcast barry hails oh yeah that's funny and where he has a

00:52:44 - 00:52:53 | Speaker 3:

coffee shop by the way shots fired by the way have I is it actually do they go by Dutch bros for real is it because it's spelled that way and I've been saying brothers I just thought you know

00:52:53 - 00:53:02 | Speaker 2:

and I can't believe I can't believe that this is the first time even considering this but yeah I think I call them Dutch brothers but I think I'm guessing they're probably called Dutch bros do I

00:53:02 - 00:53:07 | Speaker 3:

say it because I've only heard you I've only heard you say it so I it never occurred to me that you

00:53:07 - 00:53:18 | Speaker 2:

could actually with a straight face present your business as Dutch bros I've always just assumed it was short for, like, Dutch Brothers Coffee Concern.

00:53:19 - 00:53:20 | Speaker 3:

Do you know what this is?

00:53:20 - 00:53:22 | Speaker 2:

A shocker.

00:53:25 - 00:53:49 | Speaker 1:

There's a right way to rock and a wrong way to roll. You can't just listen to your soul. Just remember that life is number one. You can't be having so much fun. Just remember that life is much fun. You can be nothing but fun.

00:53:54 - 00:54:41 | Speaker 3:

This is interesting, Luke. Did you know that we have a listener named Phyllis who goes by P. Fletch in the Seattle area? Really? Because that's who's leading off. Is that her? I think that was Phyllis, yes. I mean, yeah, from years ago. I don't know if Phyllis sounds like that, but Phyllis has a special Blur's Day message for our pal Gus. What's your name? Fletch. Full name? Fletch F. Fletch. Wait, Gus is having a Blur's Day? Even Gus's have Blur's Day now. Happy 14th Blur's Day to Gus. You're a fine person, says P. Fletch, a fine musician and a great athlete. I love your confidence and sense of humor. You are admired by your many fans, including 10s, and most of all, me and Dad love you.

00:54:42 - 00:54:42 | Speaker 1:

I like turtles.

00:54:43 - 00:54:49 | Speaker 2:

Was there a clip of Gus in the intro today where he says it's disgusting and awful but kind of funny or whatever he says?

00:54:49 - 00:54:59 | Speaker 3:

You're absolutely right, and I've got to admit, that was a coincidence. I would call that a coincidence. Maybe you would call that Luke Divine Intervention. I'm not sure how you feel about those things.

00:55:00 - 00:55:28 | Speaker 2:

Happy Blur's Day, Gus. Jan in Arizona says, Shout out to Sharon, my amazing sister and fellow 10 in Hillsborough, Oregon. She's a wonderful, caring person. And if it wasn't for her, our almost 96-year-old mom wouldn't be doing as well as she is. We appreciate you more than you know. You deserve to have a great B-Day and many more. Thanks for everything, including, but not limited to, yet another ride to the airport on Wednesday.

00:55:30 - 00:55:43 | Speaker 3:

That's really cute, by the way. And cute doesn't even begin to describe it. Like, you know, taking care and giving great care to a 96-year-old person. That's awesome. Way to go. Thank you.

00:55:44 - 00:56:02 | Speaker 2:

Good sister. This guy is a four-and-a-half-foot-tall pile of awesomeness. Hey, got a note here from Nick, the Perfect Ten. Hmm. Up in Connecticut now, dude. What? I am! Did you catch that news? Nick, famously from Florida for a long time, up in Connecticut now.

00:56:02 - 00:56:06 | Speaker 3:

Yeah, I think that that may have even come up recently on the program. That's how I know.

00:56:06 - 00:56:07 | Speaker 2:

Well, Nick says, I'd like to wish my –

00:56:07 - 00:56:09 | Speaker 3:

And I've also put a GPS tracker on his car.

00:56:09 - 00:56:33 | Speaker 2:

You got to. You got to keep an eye on things on this thing. Nick says, I'd like to wish my favorite 11, Leanna, a happy Blur's Day. This past year has been a lot, but I am so happy we are together again and starting this new chapter at each other's sides. We will have so much fun in Connecticut. it connect kit and i can't wait to start adventuring again hope you have a great blurs day love nick

00:56:33 - 00:56:39 | Speaker 4:

and bongo okay everything in my life is work but not done the stuffing i don't have to shave i don't

00:56:39 - 00:56:43 | Speaker 3:

have to bathe i definitely thought this drop was shorter than it was but we're just going i don't

00:56:43 - 00:56:57 | Speaker 4:

have to be clever or nice you know i can just be myself isn't that what love really is no love is hiding who you really are at all times even when you're sleeping love is wearing makeup to bed and going downstairs to the Burger King to poop.

00:56:57 - 00:57:05 | Speaker 3:

I'm just saying that perfectly describes Nick's relationship with his partner. Oh, I'm sorry, to Leanne. To Leanne, right, that's what I meant.

00:57:08 - 00:57:12 | Speaker 2:

Slapjacking. Sean in Dunkirk, Maryland says, hey y'all.

00:57:12 - 00:57:14 | Speaker 3:

That's where the Christopher Nolan movie is set, right?

00:57:14 - 00:57:35 | Speaker 2:

Just wanted to say a happy 43rd birthday to longtime listener Sean in Dunkirk, Maryland. I love it. Excellent. Sean is the finest husband, father, and naval flight engineer I know. And I wish him the happiest of Thursdays. Also, I'm sure he's very sorry about the whole Go Astros thing. Yes, he is.

00:57:35 - 00:57:40 | Speaker 1:

You're like the coolest person I've ever met. You're like the coolest person I've ever met.

00:57:40 - 00:57:43 | Speaker 2:

Oh, you get it. Wow. Yeah, I get it. So nice we did it twice.

00:57:43 - 00:57:56 | Speaker 3:

I'm putting this together now. And by the way, I may have put this together a long time ago, and I'm forgetting. Was Sean? So Sean was the person that got in trouble for saying go Astros. But then was Sean also the person that was on the boat?

00:57:56 - 00:57:58 | Speaker 2:

Indeedly do. Indeedly do. Okay, okay.

00:57:59 - 00:58:05 | Speaker 3:

So being really cool on the boat, that's a plus. Saying go Astros, that's a demerit.

00:58:05 - 00:58:07 | Speaker 2:

During, I mean, we won't reliterate the whole thing.

00:58:07 - 00:58:15 | Speaker 3:

We add them together and we zero it. We're starting over. We're rebuilding this relationship now with Sean. And I think we're really going in the right direction.

00:58:15 - 00:58:50 | Speaker 2:

I feel like it is, from my perspective, it is rebuilt. Happy Blur's Day, Sean. Excellent. Happy Blur's Day, Sean. We love you. My Blur's Day today. Aaron says, happy 47th Blur's Day to myself. I have a Blur's Day confession to make. Here we go again. I know the rule is if I see Luke in the wild, I have to say hi. Well, I've lived in Portland for a couple of years now, and one of my favorite things has been attending the Live Wire tapings. Heck yeah. But I've never stayed to say hi to Luke. So tonight, on my Blur's Day, I'm holding myself accountable to saying hi after the show. What's the name of this person? Aaron. Aaron.

00:58:51 - 00:58:53 | Speaker 3:

Aaron, please do. Absolutely.

00:58:53 - 00:58:55 | Speaker 2:

Get on the magic carpet and ride. Happy Blurs Day, Aaron.

00:58:56 - 00:59:15 | Speaker 3:

Yeah, happy Blurs Day, Aaron. See you tonight. It's going to be a fun... Oh, man, Andrew. I meant to tell you about this on the show today, but we got so distracted with important garbage content. So one of the guests live wire tonight is Dave Hill, the comedian and writer, and he went to St. Ignatius.

00:59:15 - 00:59:16 | Speaker 2:

Oh, I didn't know he went to St. Ignatius.

00:59:16 - 00:59:52 | Speaker 3:

He played for the St. Ignatius hockey team, and he wrote this book called The Awesome Game, which is just about his love of hockey, which was kind of weird for him in Cleveland because no one really cared about hockey very much. And the sort of conceit of the book is that he'd like to get hockey. He'd like to make hockey more popular in America. But my goodness, Andrew, he's talking about WMMS. He's talking about St. Ignatius. I was screen capping the book last, and I was reading a digital copy. I wanted to send it to you. You should probably read the book, at least read the first four chapters, because it's basically your child in the eastern suburbs of Cleveland.

00:59:52 - 00:59:54 | Speaker 2:

Well, I was in the western suburbs of Cleveland. Oh, okay.

00:59:54 - 00:59:58 | Speaker 3:

They play a team. St. Ignatius plays a team from the western suburbs of Cleveland as well.

00:59:58 - 01:00:53 | Speaker 2:

Yeah, Ignatius is... on the near west side so that's a west side school but um i'm reading a book now that i think a lot of people are familiar with and if they're not familiar with the book they'd be familiar with the tv show that came out of the book called little fires everywhere which i did not realize until i started reading it that it takes place in cleveland in the 90s very specifically the east side and shaker heights which is it's all about kind of the the culture of shaker heights and i grew up in a different suburb with a different culture if you can believe it the east side and the west side really at least in the 90s felt very separate to me but it's been a trip and i had trouble sleeping last night and i like from like 2 a.m to 4 30 a.m i couldn't fall asleep because i couldn't put this goddamn book down so interesting a lot of little things i'm trying to figure out dave hill's age though he looks i think he's a teeny bit older than us a little bit older than us i'm guessing okay gotcha because i wonder what year he graduated i was

01:00:53 - 01:00:57 | Speaker 1:

thinking because you did you start at ignatius and then go to walsh or did you start at walsh

01:00:57 - 01:01:24 | Speaker 2:

and vice versa i spent most of my time at ignatius i spent sophomore sophomore through senior year at ignatius yeah so i graduated in 95 got it the wildcats right exactly and i'm trying to think what you want to say to him is oh my goodness oh my gracious here come the boys from saint ignatius they don't smoke and they don't drink all they do is think think think okay i'm gonna Break the ice backstage with him. You got that? Oh, don't just keep that for back of house.

01:01:24 - 01:01:24 | Speaker 1:

Yeah.

01:01:26 - 01:01:42 | Speaker 2:

Christine says, and this is the final Blur's Day, so enjoy it. Christine says, I want to wish a happy birthday to my smart, beautiful, kind daughter, Grace, who's turning 15. I'm so proud of how she's rocking her freshman year in high school with straight A's. I love you so much. Love, Mom.

01:01:44 - 01:01:45 | Speaker 1:

Nice.

01:01:45 - 01:01:47 | Speaker 2:

Smarty pants dance. Smarty pants dance.

01:01:47 - 01:02:17 | Speaker 1:

all they do is think think think you know this is this is actual tape of grace come on brain think of things come on brain he's so smart you know who that is no that's linda manuel oh is that is that lin manuel really i think that's lin manuel miranda from like a tiktok that i saw during the pandemic where he was like in central park or something kind of relaxing but trying to kind of brainstorm on something and he was trying to come on brain think of things Come on, brain.

01:02:17 - 01:02:21 | Speaker 2:

Be so smart. A million guesses I would have never gotten there.

01:02:21 - 01:02:45 | Speaker 1:

Just because we had a Linda Manuel reference at the top of the show today. I thought we would call it back to that. Love it. All right. Thanks, everyone, for listening to this Thursday edition of the program. We will be back here tomorrow with more imaginary radio for you. Please do. Join us for that. In the meantime, have a great Thursday. Take care of yourselves. And please remember, no mountain too tall. And good luck to all.

01:02:46 - 01:03:13 | Speaker 2:

The Thundering Buzzer. WMMS Cleveland.

01:03:13 - 01:03:16 | Speaker 1:
