All right, guys, are we going to get into the book or not? Because, I mean, I can always go downtown and have a drink. On Sunday? Sunday night. People go out on Sunday, guys. Girls go out on Sundays. Yeah, crazy people are out on Sundays.

00:00:16 - 00:00:38 | Speaker 8:

It would be nice to meet some girls, though. I mean, I know you guys haven't had dates in a long time. That's not true. Yeah, that's not true. I have a girlfriend. I don't have a girlfriend. You just started that sentence by saying, I have a girlfriend. Yeah. Why would you do that? I just wanted to hear what it would sound like coming out of my mouth. It's such an inappropriate time to experiment with that.

00:00:38 - 00:00:42 | Speaker 6:

T-B-T-L.

00:00:45 - 00:00:50 | Speaker 1:

Guess what day it is? Guess what day it is?

00:00:50 - 00:01:12 | Speaker 3:

It's Friday, Friday. Gonna get down on Friday. Everybody's looking forward to the weekend. Hello, friendos. This is Sophia reporting live from the mobile gas station on 108. Just here to tell you I had a Maria Menounos sighting on my gas pump. And she was telling me all about intermittent fasting. Over and out.

00:01:17 - 00:01:25 | Speaker 1:

I have no idea what you just said, but I feel totally transformed. Have a good show, dummies. What you do is so important.

00:01:26 - 00:01:48 | Speaker 5:

they did it you guys they really did it i saw them they pulled up in their little truck and they threw my christmas tree in the back of it and they drove away the garbage collectors took my christmas tree i did not know if it was actually going to happen oh but baby it happened

00:01:48 - 00:01:54 | Speaker 6:

I'm so excited! I'm so scared!

00:01:54 - 00:02:47 | Speaker 5:

Hi, by the way. Welcome to a very special Friday edition of TBTL. My name is Andrew Walsh. We're the number one show in hospitals and on sinking riverboat casinos. I am literally pretty excited about this Christmas tree development. I think a lot of people are probably curious as to why I would be so excited about the city picking up my Christmas tree. I just I hadn't done it that way before and I've had I'm living with some trauma I've had some bad experiences with garbage pickup in my life that has really stuck with me I was so excited though about this Christmas tree pickup that I may have damaged my relationship I'm not entirely sure I certainly at the very least embarrassed myself in front of Genevieve who saw the whole thing as I was peeping out my basement window like a perv watching the guy throw the tree into the back of the truck So let's not dawdle anymore, by the way. Genevieve is here with me right now.

00:02:47 - 00:02:51 | Speaker 2:

Do you have any idea who I am? I'm a verified Yelp complainer.

00:02:51 - 00:02:52 | Speaker 5:

Hello, Genevieve.

00:02:52 - 00:02:53 | Unknown:

Hi.

00:02:53 - 00:02:55 | Speaker 5:

How are you feeling? How are you feeling about this tree situation?

00:02:56 - 00:03:26 | Speaker 4:

It's always so funny to me to realize that, you know that old Farside cartoon, Same Planet, Different Worlds? Yeah. You and I, I sometimes feel like we're Same Planet, Different Worlds, because I will belatedly realize that there's been like, and I wouldn't even say an undercurrent. It's more like an overcurrent of you having some like very intense experience about something that could not be less visible to me personally.

00:03:26 - 00:03:35 | Speaker 5:

Well, first of all, garbage collection, it's no surprise to you that it's close to my heart. In our old apartment building, we lived in a place where we had many issues with garbage collection.

00:03:35 - 00:03:37 | Speaker 2:

Yeah, they were absolute.

00:03:37 - 00:04:04 | Speaker 5:

They would not pick up our garbage Then I would call it in and they'd say No we're going to charge you for that because your bins weren't out there I had to start a Twitter feed So that I could document and time stamp The photos of my bins At the curb and we lived in that apartment I was mentioning this to you earlier We lived in that apartment for about three years And so I was wondering Did those three years of bad service With garbage Impact me for the rest of my life

00:04:04 - 00:04:05 | Speaker 4:

Right are you permanently scarred

00:04:05 - 00:04:11 | Speaker 5:

Like, it's hard to say because we've only been out of that apartment for less than three years. Like, is it a one-to-one thing?

00:04:11 - 00:04:16 | Speaker 4:

What was your garbage anxiety level at our previous? Because we've lived in many places together.

00:04:16 - 00:04:20 | Speaker 5:

I don't remember having issues with garbage in the Wallingford apartment.

00:04:21 - 00:04:22 | Speaker 4:

Yeah, it seemed like they just picked it up.

00:04:22 - 00:04:30 | Speaker 5:

They just picked it up. We would drag them to the curb. I don't remember it ever being a thing there. I believe in L.A. And then in L.A. we had a dumpster. I think it was a dumpster situation.

00:04:30 - 00:04:35 | Speaker 4:

So there was no sort of, like, problem of someone not coming.

00:04:35 - 00:04:44 | Speaker 5:

Yeah. So I went outside today. Now, the garbage situation's been a little bit wacky the past couple of weeks anyway because of the holidays. It's a day later.

00:04:44 - 00:04:54 | Speaker 4:

Yeah, couldn't have timed out better because I randomly, not randomly, but I finally took the tree down yesterday without any knowledge or awareness that I was just ahead of the garbage.

00:04:54 - 00:04:56 | Speaker 5:

Playing right into my plans.

00:04:57 - 00:04:59 | Speaker 4:

Yeah, exactly. Would you have been mad if I hadn't taken the tree down?

00:05:00 - 00:05:03 | Speaker 1:

And we still had a tree up on today, this holiest of garbage days.

00:05:05 - 00:05:09 | Speaker 2:

No, I honestly was pretty sanguine about the idea that like, hey, listen, we have.

00:05:10 - 00:05:11 | Speaker 1:

That's how I would describe you vis-a-vis garbage.

00:05:12 - 00:05:13 | Speaker 2:

Or anything.

00:05:13 - 00:05:13 | Speaker 1:

Or anything.

00:05:14 - 00:05:21 | Speaker 2:

By the way, speaking of our relationship, something happened to me yesterday that I have not told you about yet.

00:05:21 - 00:05:21 | Speaker 1:

I can't wait.

00:05:21 - 00:05:46 | Speaker 2:

And in a little bit, I'm going to. I have to be very careful because I can't reveal everything. But I'm going to tell you a story about something that happened to me yesterday that I honestly think if things had gone the other way, our relationship would be in jeopardy. My life might be in jeopardy because you might have just myrdled me. Myrldered you? What did we say when we were watching the zombie show?

00:05:47 - 00:06:01 | Speaker 1:

The Walking Dead. In the first season of The Walking Dead, there's a character who is a pretty well-known. Now he's a pretty well-known actor because he's in Guardians of the Galaxy. I can't think of his real name. but he played the, like, really scummy, evil Merle.

00:06:01 - 00:06:01 | Speaker 2:

Yes.

00:06:02 - 00:06:05 | Speaker 1:

And he was always killing people, so he started saying they got Merledered.

00:06:06 - 00:06:19 | Speaker 2:

You got Merledered. Actually, let's just switch to this. I think we've talked about the Christmas tree thing enough. I don't know why I didn't trust the city. The city said you could leave trees out at the curb. In the past, I've always denuded them. I've, like, trimmed them down in the house and stuffed them.

00:06:19 - 00:06:23 | Speaker 1:

And then cut them almost into, like, sort of, like, hand-sized pieces.

00:06:23 - 00:06:34 | Speaker 2:

Yeah, and then put them into the yard waste bin. again where we lived last time i think that was maybe necessary because i don't think i could have just left a tree and in that commercial district i mean they didn't pick up our regular

00:06:34 - 00:06:38 | Speaker 1:

i know i can't even imagine what they would do with a full-size tree so anyway um this is my

00:06:38 - 00:06:51 | Speaker 2:

first time i'm just like throwing it out there and the city did say on the website like you might want to it was weird i couldn't tell if it was a mandate or a suggestion like cut your tree into four foot sections and i was like well this thing's like what six and a half yeah at most

00:06:51 - 00:06:55 | Speaker 1:

Yeah, it was a huge tree. And it was a very skinny tree, too. Yeah, it was very light. It was really light.

00:06:56 - 00:07:09 | Speaker 2:

So anyway, yeah, I was literally, I came in from the outdoors. I had just brought in the garbage bin, which was emptied, the recycling, which was emptied. But I came in and I told you, I'm like, I don't know what's going on with the tree. The tree has been displaced. It's not where I left it on the curb yesterday.

00:07:09 - 00:07:11 | Speaker 1:

So then to be clear, we're not done with this topic.

00:07:11 - 00:07:25 | Speaker 2:

No, and we're done. We're wrapping it up now quickly. So I started getting nervous. I'm like, did the yard waste people come, see my tree, and then kind of reject it and throw it back further into my yard?

00:07:25 - 00:07:34 | Speaker 1:

I really wish I had seen whoever did. I'm sure it was like the regular garbage collectors, like this is in our way, just throwing it away. But I wish I'd seen that. I bet that would have been fun to see.

00:07:34 - 00:08:08 | Speaker 2:

That's the first argument I've had for putting cameras on our house so we can watch what the garbage folks do when I'm not literally spying on them out my window because I brought in the two cans that had been emptying. And I told you, I'm like, Genevieve, I don't know what's going on with the tree. Like, they didn't pick it up. But now they also didn't pick up the regular yard waste. Usually they come first. I don't know. Did they just see the tree, get mad at us, and skip us altogether? Like, I don't know. Yeah. And then as soon as I said that, I heard the truck pull up, the third truck of the day. It's very much like the three ghosts in Christmas Carol. I heard the third truck pull up.

00:08:08 - 00:08:10 | Speaker 1:

Today you'll be visited by three garbage trucks.

00:08:10 - 00:08:24 | Speaker 2:

And so I have my little basement window here. And I'm like, I don't think he can see me. But I was spying on the guy who picked up the little green bin, emptied it out. I'm like, is he going to go for the tree? Is he going to go for the tree? And he picked it up. And I watched the whole thing like a creeper.

00:08:25 - 00:08:46 | Speaker 1:

Do you miss at all? Because I think you kind of enjoyed the, there was a sort of a zen element to you denuding the tree of every branch and then cutting it up. Do you kind of miss that? Or did you get enough tree chopping up this summer when you chopped up bit by bit our entire back hedge?

00:08:46 - 00:09:53 | Speaker 2:

No, I did not. I don't miss doing that to the Christmas tree. It took me forever. One time I took some photos of it. It was kind of funny. I got a really nice email from a listener. And I'm sorry, I don't have it in front of me, so I can't remember your name. But we have a listener who I must have been talking about the tree situation somewhat recently. because we got an email with a bunch of photos of his family posed around the tree that was nothing left of it but a stump or not a stump but the pole in the middle the trunk in the middle right so apparently he would do the same thing he would trim it all the way down but then redecorate just the stem and then take photos of his family as his kids underneath posing next to it is very sweet thank you for sending that in but okay so anyway yeah so I was creeping on the garbage truck today no big deal um i do want to talk about what happened to me yesterday though but i have to be careful because it's first of all happy anniversary this sunday is our anniversary yeah uh 23 years the big two three so i had something i wanted to pick up for you a little little gift not a big deal don't get super excited but it was something that i needed to go

00:09:53 - 00:09:58 | Speaker 1:

you should get even less excited because although i am very excited about the gift that i got for you. It is

00:10:00 - 00:10:06 | Speaker 2:

not going to be ready by sunday oh well then i can take this back um no but i don't want to

00:10:06 - 00:10:32 | Speaker 1:

give away too much but i had an idea for a gift for you and i had a very specific idea um and so i went searching around for it and i found a shop that is in pike place market or in that area of town now that is a for people who aren't from around here you've probably if you know one thing about seattle other than the space needle you probably know about pike place market it's kind of where the a lot of the tourists go and where the fish throwing yeah and there's a fish throwing happens there but it really is like a working market with like a bunch of little shops and

00:10:32 - 00:10:37 | Speaker 2:

restaurants and all kinds of stuff yeah and a produce market market a meat market magpie studios

00:10:37 - 00:11:07 | Speaker 1:

has a shop there that's run by our uh friend and longtime listener and supporter sarah uh actually more on that in a second because that sort of plays into my thought process yesterday but um so i had identified this thing i wanted to get you and i called this shop and i'm like can you hold that for me and they're like yeah and so i i drive i rarely drive into this part of town it's kind of a shitty place to find parking and everything once you you know it's like the it's the heart of the city a bunch of one-way streets and bad parking and all this stuff and

00:11:07 - 00:11:11 | Speaker 2:

especially the closer you get to the market i cannot believe they allow cars on that street

00:11:11 - 00:11:23 | Speaker 1:

right by the market that's right by the market i don't even try yeah that you know that's a whole thing they tried to stop allowing cars down there but other people were like no this is a working market we have to allow vehicles i feel like they could have found a middle ground they're just

00:11:23 - 00:11:32 | Speaker 2:

allowing trucks or something i absolutely think you can have a permit to drive through there and it's called you know the permit is i work here and here's my permit yeah um you think you can

00:11:32 - 00:12:14 | Speaker 1:

workshop that name the acronym would be ugly um but anyway so i didn't park right down by the market it kind of doesn't matter that much but i park on a main one-way street let's say it's maybe third ave or something like that second ave and i'm really lucky when i find this spot and And it's right by the sign that says what numbers you have to punch into your phone to pay for parking on the app. Right. So I'm perfect. Punch in the numbers. And I go about my merry way. I go searching for this little shop. Now, it's really hard to find things at Pike Place Market because you can't tell. Oh, my God. If it's in the market itself, it could be on one of several floors. There's a garage even on the streets themselves. It's sort of built on a hill.

00:12:14 - 00:12:41 | Speaker 2:

I would rather be dropped in a city that I've never been to. I mean, in terms of, like, I think my ability to, like, find my way find, because I have been, like, there is no, unless I know, unless it is, like, right by the fish throwing or something, forget it, because it is. It's, like, this layered, deeply layered, like, facility that has all kinds of, like, blind alleys and dead ends, and it's just absolutely nuts.

00:12:41 - 00:14:31 | Speaker 1:

And if you're following the blue dot on your map, you can't tell my, it's almost like a video game, sort of. like is it above me is it below me yeah is it on the other side of the market they're right on top of us man that's right it's exactly like that in fact that's what happened to me and a xenomorph yes um no that would have been better uh no i don't want to exaggerate this too much maybe i've already maybe i've already done that but i oh man so anyway so i i eventually find this little shop and it was difficult it was like sort of i had to go through the market to the other side then there's a street then there's that garage you have to go down like several layers of a spiral staircase outside um there's one thing i like about the market for people who haven't been there is like it is the big tourist destination but it also does have a bit of authenticity a lot of authenticity to it i think still which is that's the argument for people saying they want the trucks and cars to be able to come and go too that is not like sort of overly preserved there you know anyway so i find this shop and um i'll tell you more about it when i give you your actual gift but the woman who runs the shop is so nice but also a total kook i had been talking to her on the on the phone the uh the day before and anyway so i make i make my purchase and we're going kind of back and forth about whether or not this is the right thing um but i end up saying okay i'm gonna get this i think it's the right thing uh in fact if it's not the right thing i even made an agreement with her i said hey what's your return policy she said i don't have no no returns and i was like kind of like okay and she's like okay well you can you can return it for store credit if this doesn't work out so i was able to negotiate that with you just by standing there for two seconds she came out so strong about a no return policy and i don't know what my face did i wasn't put off she's like again she was a very likable character but quite a character and she said well okay she can she can return it but and i'm putting a special note on the receipt so we

00:14:31 - 00:14:39 | Speaker 2:

can return this thing i have a bespoke return policy you have a bespoke return policy i hope there's something if i don't like this gift i hope there's something in this store that i like for

00:14:39 - 00:17:38 | Speaker 1:

equal or of equal value so now i i think there i think so if you if you don't use the return credits i will okay so that's that's really the spirit of the anniversary gift i believe um i got you i got you bowling shoes i got a bowling ball and bowling shoes so if you if If it doesn't work for you, I'll use the store credit. um anyway so i leave that store and now i'm like well i put like i have an extra 45 minutes on the meter or whatever i'll just grab some lunch while i'm here how often it's going to be a little bit overpriced probably but what isn't these days right so i find this little kind of lunch counter place i get a cup of uh clam chowder and a reuben like that's right up my alley looking looking out at the water watching tugboats go by um just a nice nice little lunch counter um and the whole time i'm there i'm thinking about how much time i have left on my parking meter whether or not i want to extend it via the app and whether or not i should stop by to say hi to listener sarah who i just mentioned has a shop in the it's called magpie mouse studios and it's it's in the um market there and i i've never visited i promised her the next time i go there i'll i'll visit but it's also the middle of the afternoon i have work to do and i just don't know if this is the right time for me to do that so i'm kind of going back and forth in my mind i'm also kind of like looking at the um that i'm trying to figure out where she would be you know kind of looking at the map and stuff and i kind of go back and forth on that a few times and i decided no you know what i got exactly like 13 minutes left on my meter i'm just gonna that's a sign i'm just gonna get out of here i'll say hi to sarah another time i do want to see that that studio i think it's beautiful in the little shop there um so then i'm walking back to my car and as i'm walking back to my car i pass a little shop and what is in the window but the exact thing that i wanted to get you like to a t and now i'm holding one bag with return policy that can only be used for store credit right but it's also a nice thing yeah you might want it anyway but it wasn't perfect then i'm passing this so now i'm looking and i'm like okay i'm down to like 10 minutes or maybe a little bit less on on my parking now but i gotta get this thing we'll figure it out i gotta get this so it just seemed like fate right there it was in the window staring at me i'm like there it is okay so i i go into this other little shop i'm like hey i need that thing in the window it's not a doggie um and uh i'm chatting with the woman and she's very nice She's giving me some background on this thing I'm buying. And I'm watching the time on the meter kind of tick down. And I'm like, okay, I'm parked maybe like two blocks from here or something. Should I extend it just to make sure I don't get a ticket? But I'm like, no. By the time I get to the car, like even if the time has, you know, run out, like the chance of somebody like waiting there, like some parking enforcement waiting there to leap.

00:17:38 - 00:17:40 | Speaker 1:

It's like I have some wiggle room.

00:17:40 - 00:17:40 | Speaker 2:

Watching it tick down.

00:17:42 - 00:17:58 | Speaker 1:

So I'm like, I buy the second thing now. And now I'm walking to the car. I'm like, okay, I recognize that. I recognize that. I know I'm getting close. And then I get to where our car is parked and I notice there are hardly any other cars parked on the street here.

00:17:58 - 00:17:59 | Speaker 2:

Oh, that's never a good sign.

00:17:59 - 00:19:26 | Speaker 1:

And then I'm like, oh, my God. This is getting to be rush hour in the middle of the city, the time of day when parking on certain sides of the street is completely turned off. No more parking. And they will tow you. they'll tell you right away immediately and i'm looking ahead and there are two cars left on the street there's one that i don't recognize and i can't tell if the car behind it is mine or not and i look at my watch and i realize all of this had been happening leading up to three o'clock and it was 259 i think if i had tried to extend that yeah it would have been it would the app would have told me you can't extend this and that would have been a warning but this whole time i kept on deciding not to extend it but if i had gone yeah to see sarah i'm trying to figure this out if i'd gone to see sarah i think the car would have been towed or i might have thrown some more time on the meter and then it'd been warned in some way but that feeling of walking now i feel like i've exaggerated the story for this lame payoff but walking towards the car turning a corner and seeing all of the cars just lying in the street it makes my blood run cold to think yeah and i'm just like sitting and i'm holding these two bags i get in the car my heart is racing and i just keep thinking what would i be telling genevieve right now what would i be doing if i were standing on the street corner holding these two bags at pike place market and just being like the car is gone it's been towed i mean i would have had to figure it out obviously i have

00:19:26 - 00:19:45 | Speaker 2:

i'm 45 years old i have my car has been towed before in my life it is a nightmare it's a expensive nightmare but it's not a tragedy it is a huge hassle what you would have had to do is take a bus home i would have had to change my name hit your name no you would have well you

00:19:45 - 00:19:50 | Speaker 1:

would have like i would have used my phone to figure out where is it and take a lift there

00:19:50 - 00:20:04 | Speaker 2:

and you know we were out yeah 150 bucks or whatever and it sucks and but you know we are so this is what i try to tell myself anytime this is what happens like when our scooter got stolen and then wrecked and then taken to an impound lot which is the last

00:20:04 - 00:20:15 | Speaker 1:

time as an impound lot so maybe not unlike our old apartment that really imprinted on me because it was like some sort of scary scene out of a one of the bad star wars films but you know at the end

00:20:15 - 00:20:21 | Speaker 2:

of the day 150 dollars or whatever it is to 200 what do you think it is i bet you a ticket would

00:20:21 - 00:20:27 | Speaker 1:

be 150 bucks in that part of town i'll bet you would take and then another threes so okay let's

00:20:27 - 00:20:48 | Speaker 2:

us like round up to five hundred dollars that sucks but you know what's really great about our life five hundred dollars doesn't change it that much yeah and you and i have lived lives i mean listen you and i with our family 20 years ago five hundred dollars would have been yeah exactly a very significant impact on my budget for that month or the year yeah i mean i lived through

00:20:48 - 00:21:32 | Speaker 1:

times where five hundred dollars i mean i you know and again i i don't want to make it sound like we don't have safety nets in our family and everything but as independent human beings which we've both been individually and then together since our early 20s like I remember I drove a beater uh in college that broke down so much that finally it broke down one time I'm like I don't have any more money for this I took a semester off of college so I could just work I mean it was several different factors but it's basically like I'm out of money and my car broke down by Stearns Road on 71 like I think I just need to stop refill my funds and then go back to school which was kind of scary because you know sometimes you leave school you don't go back sometimes you

00:21:32 - 00:22:08 | Speaker 2:

don't and a lot of people don't and it really reminds you like we're like you said we're very fortunate that even at our most uh sort of you know modest income or like being you know at our at our at our very poorest if you will we always had a safety net we always you know we never were in danger of being unhoused or being hungry but we were close enough to what that feels like just in terms of like you said like I don't have any more money to fix this car so this car cannot be fixed I have to go you know you had to go use your safety net which was live with your folks

00:22:08 - 00:22:13 | Speaker 1:

right oh yeah during that time it makes you and again I was in college so you know I was yeah no

00:22:13 - 00:22:42 | Speaker 2:

young and they were helping me out a lot no it's not shameful to to live with your folks if you need to but like it reminds you how if someone doesn't have a family situation where they can go to be safe and be taken in um or you know just nobody has the means for it like that's the difference between housing instability and the way we live right like it's just the luck of the draw that we have that in our lives i remember and i think i've said this too many

00:22:42 - 00:24:29 | Speaker 1:

times i assume i've said this on the show because it is one of those things that i heard once years and years ago and it imprinted on me so much and I think about it all the time and in fact you could say it kind of has impacted the way I live my life um when I was working as a producer in New Hampshire like a you know really really long time ago I was working on like a mid-morning kind of you know topical show sort of news sort of lifestyle whatever call and show you're familiar with the type of thing and um we had a woman on who was talking about poverty specifically in rural areas which was you know that hits new hampshire specifically hard like we see poverty and homelessness all around us here in the city and it takes some pretty awful shapes um but it looks different than poverty looks and homelessness looks in super rural areas yeah um just think about transportation services services all of that stuff yeah and i remember this one was talking about and I don't think it was something that I had really thought about a lot in life but I remember she said I'm sorry I can't credit who who wrote this um but said you know like we're all like three things away from potentially being without a roof over our heads and then once you don't have a roof over your head things really spiral you know and you know I've always thought about like what are my three things and like right now and it's not that much like honestly like I was joking around about like if you would murder me or if we'd get broken up if the car got towed Obviously, I'm exaggerating a bit, but I think that like if if something were to happen to my job, my current employment, this show, you know, if something were to happen, TBTL is no longer functioning for whatever reason. Don't worry. Donate now, everybody. Let's just say that for some reason I lose my job.

00:24:29 - 00:24:29 | Speaker 2:

Yeah.

00:24:30 - 00:25:05 | Speaker 1:

Then I have a health issue of some sort. Right. And our relationship. I mean, none of these things are, I don't want to catastrophize, but none of those things are unprecedented in human beings' lives. Relationships end, health issues pop up, and people lose their jobs. But if all of those happen in a certain time frame, you could find yourself living in a car. And then once you're living in a car, it's really hard to get back on your feet because it's hard to find jobs when you don't. don't have a shower you know etc i mean that's a very simplified version of that so yeah i think

00:25:05 - 00:25:36 | Speaker 2:

about that stuff a lot no it's i do too it's the the line between like safe and unsafe is a lot of it happens the day you're born right a lot of it is is the day you're born um but it's also a thin line it is it is it does i do want to address one thing which is i know you were joking that I would murder you if you got the car towed but I really want it makes me sad to think I mean I know I we joke around about it and I mean like the like that I'm such a dragon lady and you can't

00:25:36 - 00:25:41 | Speaker 1:

stand to be hollered at we don't joke around about you and I feel like we're sort of developing a

00:25:41 - 00:26:07 | Speaker 2:

real like Jerry and Beth Smith unpleasant vibe like the fictionally in in the you know in the you know sort of like the mythos is that but I do want to say that if that happened to you my first instinct would be to be so like worried for not worried for your safety but sad for you at like at the stressfulness of that situation and the upsetting you know experience that you're having

00:26:07 - 00:27:38 | Speaker 1:

yeah no that you know that's true I mean if you called me and said oh you're not gonna believe it yeah you would never be mad at me no I wouldn't but in the back of your brain or the front of your brain in that moment wouldn't you maybe feel like i don't want to tell andrew about this like you were um you were on the spotless podcast with me and hannah recently and i'd be beating myself up yeah and and like you had ironed something on a nice table and it ended up sort of ruining not ruining you damaging damaging the table and you mostly fixed it but mostly yeah i still see the marks um and you were so self-flagellating and you kept apologizing to me and i'm like well you and i didn't say this at the time i just let you have your moment you're totally freaking out but this was a table that we this is a beautiful like you know how old is it from the 60s or something yeah 1958 table yeah you think i'd have that table in my living room if it weren't for you you think i'd have that living room if it weren't for you like you picked up the table like i mean but you kept apologizing to me because you were so you were feeling so panicky and bad about something you had done so when I say that like I just I imagine myself standing on the street corner looking at where the car used to be holding a bag in each hand because I think I'm doing something nice for our anniversary or trying to and then just thinking about having to call you and say the car was towed by the way I'm at Pike Place Market I didn't tell you I'm coming here like it's not because I would think of you as a dragon lady but just because that's how we feel in those

00:27:38 - 00:27:55 | Speaker 2:

moments yeah i that's true and i mean i apologize to you about the table because it it is a thing that is ours yes i acquired it and you know you wouldn't have it if it wasn't for me but you know in the same way that the car the car is ours you know like it's our shared

00:27:55 - 00:28:05 | Speaker 1:

thing and which you take care of which you picked out i mean again like you i'm not trying to make it sound like you you do literally everything but you do literally everything no but i mean

00:28:05 - 00:28:10 | Speaker 2:

because stuff like this when you're huffing over the unwashed dishes i don't feel like i do

00:28:10 - 00:28:28 | Speaker 1:

everything yeah you don't do everything um the like you do the research on those things and cars specifically i feel like you take a real ever since i've known you even with your own cars like i feel like you take a real um pride is the wrong word but a real investment and upkeep on cars and

00:28:28 - 00:28:39 | Speaker 2:

stuff more than i ever did it's crazy not to i'm it's my skin flintiness at work there i just i I hate, and speaking of, we absolutely have to get the oil changed this month.

00:28:39 - 00:29:35 | Speaker 1:

Okay, sounds good. We can talk about that off air. Really? I know I've really blurred the lines. How low is the bar here? I know I've really blurred the lines here. But anyway, oh, man, we didn't even talk about the fact that we're like halfway through our 24-hour no-vacuum situation because I washed the filter out yesterday. But you know what? Maybe we should just move on here. Let's thank some donors. When we come back, I didn't even mention this. I have a quiz for you that I want you to take. This is a quiz that I wrote a while back, but I don't think you've taken it. And I've mentioned it on the show before. I sent it out as a TBTL email newsletter several months ago. I was doing some research thinking about Doritos and looking at all the flavors of Doritos and Doritos-related products over the years. I think there's a total of 194 different flavors. And some of them sounded like military operations to me. So I put together a quiz. you have to guess if I'm giving you a Doritos. Did I say Fritos or Doritos this whole time?

00:29:35 - 00:29:36 | Speaker 2:

I think you said Doritos.

00:29:36 - 00:29:46 | Speaker 1:

I think I've been saying Doritos. Sometimes I just say the wrong word. So I'm going to give you a list of words, and you're going to have to decide whether or not that is a military operation from history.

00:29:46 - 00:29:46 | Speaker 2:

Okay.

00:29:47 - 00:29:51 | Speaker 1:

Or a Doritos flavor from history. From history. Got it. Or possibly the present.

00:29:51 - 00:29:51 | Unknown:

Okay.

00:29:54 - 00:31:27 | Speaker 1:

I have a bit of a new podcast obsession I'd like to tell you about. It's called The Distraction from our friends over here. at Defector. It's hosted by Drew McGarry and David Roth. Now you've heard Luke and I obsess over David and Drew's writing over the years. And I just started listening to the podcast, I don't know, a month or two ago. And I knew I was already addicted when after listening to one episode, I quoted it like a thousand times the next weekend. They were interviewing one of the showrunners from The Simpsons. And I didn't even realize until like more than halfway through the show that it was also ostensibly a sports podcast well it's about sports it's also about movies and art and sandwiches and getting irritated by people who are talking on their cell phone in public with a speaker phone that's something that's very close to my heart as well each week these guys tackle all kinds of subjects serious and impossibly stupid their words not mine but i'll back it up if you like the kind of show we're doing here at tbtl i think you're going to like this podcast as well especially if you like me have at least a casual interest in sports so dial it up on your podcast app or surf on over to defector.com for more we would not be able to have conversations on air about when we need to get the oil changed on our Volkswagen Golf 2018?

00:31:27 - 00:31:28 | Speaker 2:

17.

00:31:28 - 00:31:44 | Speaker 1:

2017 Volkswagen Golf without the support of listeners. Listeners like Denise Tiplin. Nope, sorry. That's my eyesight, by the way. Denise Tipton of Las Vegas, Nevada. Oh. Still haven't really had a Vegas experience myself.

00:31:44 - 00:31:49 | Speaker 2:

You really haven't. I mean, you kind of breezed through there on one of your TBTL road shows.

00:31:49 - 00:31:51 | Speaker 1:

Yeah, exactly, in an RV, stayed in an RV park.

00:31:51 - 00:31:54 | Speaker 2:

But I couldn't talk you into coming on the great COVID trip of 2021.

00:31:54 - 00:32:02 | Speaker 1:

Oh, goodness. Best decision I ever made. It's the end of the pandemic. You guys are getting drunk and all trying on Camaro Kev's CPAP machine.

00:32:02 - 00:32:03 | Speaker 2:

I didn't try that on.

00:32:04 - 00:32:37 | Speaker 1:

Coming back with the gunk. We also get support from Karen Terentiev of Kent, Washington, or Terentjev, maybe? Karen Terentiev or Terentjev of Kent, Washington. here in the Seattle area, and Joni Karnowski of Long Beach, California. Now, I like the way this is shaping up geographically. In fact, look at this. Michelle Neptune supports the show. She's in Brooklyn, New York. We have a Vegas. We have a Kent, Washington. We have a Long Beach, California, and we have a Brooklyn, New York. We still have two more to go.

00:32:37 - 00:32:38 | Speaker 2:

Wow.

00:32:38 - 00:32:40 | Speaker 1:

That's really spreading across the country.

00:32:40 - 00:32:42 | Speaker 2:

It's all across this great land of ours.

00:32:42 - 00:32:54 | Speaker 1:

I love it. Here back in Seattle proper, Kevin Swantek, long-time supporter of the show. Thank you, Kevin. And how about this? Louisville, Kentucky, Genevieve. Rounding things out.

00:32:55 - 00:32:56 | Speaker 2:

Southern states represent.

00:32:56 - 00:33:03 | Speaker 1:

Love it. James C. Winters. I love that James uses the C. Yeah. It's like.

00:33:04 - 00:33:07 | Speaker 2:

Is he in SAG? He has to. Oh, maybe. I'm just joking.

00:33:07 - 00:33:27 | Speaker 1:

Yeah, no, there's another James Winters who works in the adult industry. Our James has to go by James C. Winters to make sure that it doesn't share the same credit. Yeah. Some names just sound better with the middle initial, right? I think so, yeah. It's like very dignified.

00:33:27 - 00:33:38 | Speaker 2:

Yeah, but it's not universal. My middle initial is E. Now, I do use it in my signature, but I don't use it any other time.

00:33:38 - 00:33:43 | Speaker 1:

Genevieve E. has does not add to that name. You already have Genevieve working for you.

00:33:43 - 00:33:46 | Speaker 2:

Genevieve, and adding another E sound onto Genevieve is, I think.

00:33:47 - 00:33:54 | Speaker 1:

Genevieve E. Genevieve E. Yeah, that is weird. But G-E-H is a good initial. I think it's pretty good. Do you sign your initials G-E-H or just G-H?

00:33:55 - 00:33:59 | Speaker 2:

If I'm doing, like, if I've got to initial, like, an official document or something, I just do G-H.

00:33:59 - 00:34:05 | Speaker 1:

Oh, really? I'd go with G-E-H. Andrew L. Walsh, I feel similarly. Like, you don't need that L in there. It doesn't add to it.

00:34:05 - 00:34:20 | Speaker 2:

I think it's, I think C is a really good middle name. C, follow, like L is tricky because you're starting with another vowel sound. Same thing with E. But I think a good, like, consonant sound at the end of a name sounds good.

00:34:20 - 00:35:12 | Speaker 1:

Do we have any game show music? Sorry. I mean, I was listening. It just occurred to me that I want to play this quiz with you. I mean, it is still technically, is it still technically the winter games? I think it is, right? Here it is. Here it is. I made this quiz so long ago, Genevieve, that I do not remember the answers myself. So we're almost playing this together. Do you have a bell? Do you want to give yourself a little ring-a-ding if you get it right? And I will give you... you this again this is doritos flavor or military operation real life real military operations yes this isn't some movie stuff these are i think they're all american but i'm not 100 no they're

00:35:12 - 00:35:20 | Speaker 2:

not some are british i believe okay buffalo rush oh wow that's a tricky one right out of out of

00:35:20 - 00:36:23 | Speaker 1:

the gate uh i'm gonna say doritos you are right doritos indeedly do doritos flavor shots blazing buffalo rush so these are not your traditional dorito shapes these are dorito flavor shots what this is all from taquitos.net the worldwide leader in snacks by the way um you know you're the worldwide leader if it ends in dot net and i say that as one of the people who works for tbtl.net did you say it's a doritos flavored shot but it's not like a shot of um like a drink like like a drink i think it's a different shape i think they made something called dorito shots it says this creation from the snack strong productions divisions at doritos boy they are they dig into the details here had the same chips as nacho cheese doritos but included a blazing buffalo rush flavor uh packet to let snackers spice things up so it came with a packet oh it's like a spice packet yes maybe that's what the shot oh flavor shot that's what the shot is just

00:36:23 - 00:36:25 | Speaker 2:

Shake it into your existing bag of Doritos.

00:36:25 - 00:36:28 | Speaker 1:

Give it a little boost. Gives you something to do.

00:36:28 - 00:36:29 | Speaker 2:

Wow.

00:36:30 - 00:36:31 | Speaker 1:

Huh. That's interesting. Okay.

00:36:31 - 00:36:33 | Speaker 2:

What's the name of the, what's the name of SnackStrong?

00:36:34 - 00:36:35 | Speaker 1:

The name of the website?

00:36:35 - 00:36:38 | Speaker 2:

No, no. The name of the division in Doritos Corp.

00:36:38 - 00:36:42 | Speaker 1:

It's, let's see here. The Snack, yeah, SnackStrong Productions division.

00:36:42 - 00:37:09 | Speaker 2:

SnackStrong Productions. What do you do for a living? Oh, I work for Doritos. What do you do for them? Well, I work in a division, a super secret, like, startup division called SnackStrong productions let me give you another one here urgent fury i'm gonna say military military i hope it's military because otherwise it really puts you in a bad visual i ate a bunch of doritos

00:37:09 - 00:37:16 | Speaker 1:

and now i have urgent fury i have what they call now i have what doctors call urgent fury is it

00:37:16 - 00:37:21 | Speaker 2:

accurate sure but i just feel like it's not coming out of snack strong productions that was 1983

00:37:21 - 00:37:32 | Speaker 1:

Grenada Operation. Congratulations, Genevieve. Not one of Snack Strong Productions' greatest hits. How about Chowhound?

00:37:33 - 00:37:39 | Speaker 2:

I'm going to maybe buck the expectation here and say military.

00:37:39 - 00:37:56 | Speaker 1:

Indeed. Give yourself a ringy dingy. Operation Mana and Operation Chowhound were humanitarian food drops to relieve a Famine in German-occupied Netherlands. Okay. There you go. You're very good at this game.

00:37:57 - 00:38:00 | Speaker 2:

I know a lot about history and snacks.

00:38:02 - 00:38:21 | Speaker 1:

Tacos at midnight. Operation Tacos at midnight or Doritos Tacos at midnight? I'm going to say Doritos. You are incorrect. No, you're right. I was right. I just wanted that so badly to be an operation. I'm running the table. I mean, wouldn't that be a fun military operation, though?

00:38:21 - 00:38:26 | Speaker 2:

Yeah, yeah. It just, it doesn't have the, it doesn't also, what is it? I want to hear about what tacos at midnight are.

00:38:27 - 00:39:00 | Speaker 1:

Okay, again, according to taquitos.net, taste test. I'm not, wow, this just comes out strong. I'm not sure what the Doritos folks were thinking when they named this flavor. Taco flavored Doritos are a great idea, and they've been done before, and tacos are definitely something that people eat at midnight. However, the decision to consume tacos at that hour often has something to do with how many drinks you've had. So the standards for tacos eaten under those circumstances weren't necessarily very high. I see this person is saying like the tacos at midnight are not that good. So why bother naming your bag that?

00:39:00 - 00:39:16 | Speaker 2:

I think that person doesn't get high enough because I can tell you that when you're snacky like that at midnight, Like, no matter how bad the food is at that hour, it tastes so good.

00:39:16 - 00:39:24 | Speaker 1:

You know, this started off, I thought they were going to be really negative about this whole experience. They love the flavor of the chips. They just think the tacos at midnight is a bad name.

00:39:24 - 00:39:28 | Speaker 2:

I think this is a person who's living too stayed a life.

00:39:28 - 00:39:29 | Speaker 1:

Not moss enough.

00:39:29 - 00:39:31 | Speaker 2:

Not moss enough, yeah.

00:39:31 - 00:39:52 | Speaker 1:

Show title, ring the bell for me. When I opened the bag, I saw the usual color of Doritos was made significantly darker by the addition of a good dose of nearly black-colored seasoning. The taste was quite good. It didn't taste just like taco powder, like many taco-flavored snacks do, but really more like the mix of flavors that make up a taco, specifically a grilled chicken taco. Very tasty! Exclamation point.

00:39:52 - 00:39:55 | Speaker 2:

All right, well, now I want some of these tacos at midnight. I know.

00:39:55 - 00:40:00 | Speaker 1:

I like that name. How about Blaze? Also a...

00:40:00 - 00:40:05 | Speaker 2:

former boss of yours but that is not did you have a boss named blaze he wasn't my immediate boss he's

00:40:05 - 00:40:13 | Speaker 1:

my boss's boss yeah um i will say operation blaze military operation blaze is incorrect

00:40:13 - 00:40:59 | Speaker 2:

that's the first one you've finally missed exactly doritos blaze this was the shortest and simplest name for a doritos flavor that we've seen in a while maybe ever says taquitos.net let's see after seeing the name and the heat hype on the back of the bag i wondered whether this might approach the heat of a Carolina Reaper pepper. And then I gasped as I realized this is a big bag with lots of chips, 120 of them based on estimates. They're counting the chips in the bag. I kind of dig this website. I never really dug into the descriptions of these things before. I opened the bag to find the chips had some of the same general orange color as nacho cheese Doritos. There was an application of an intense red powder. I crunched in to find a nice flavor, a tasty mix of hot peppers and spices, but the actual heat level was very

00:40:59 - 00:41:49 | Speaker 1:

mild i yeah i feel like most any any kind of commercially released chip on the whole is going to be something that most people can tolerate except for the one that's like the it's like the doritos uh like um like the doritos roulette right where there's one one scary chip in there i forgot about that that was kind of a fun a fun gimmick didn't somebody bring some of those to a gathering we had yes i think it was at dj tuna's house and i think there was more than one in the bag so it's not like only one person was gonna get it but there was some like small minority of the chips were super hot i feel like i got one it was like very hot it was hotter than a chip i would want to consume on the regular but it didn't like leave me you know on the floor or anything it was at the

00:41:49 - 00:41:56 | Speaker 2:

super bowl party i think it just hit me i think that's when somebody brought a bag of those things Wasn't it the Super Bowl party we went to last year? Maybe not. Doesn't matter.

00:41:56 - 00:41:57 | Speaker 1:

Okay.

00:41:57 - 00:42:07 | Speaker 2:

I'm looking ahead at the quiz here. We should really get the oil change on that car. Red Bean. Red Bean.

00:42:08 - 00:42:09 | Speaker 1:

Red Bean.

00:42:10 - 00:42:13 | Speaker 2:

Operation Red Bean or Red Bean Flavored Doritos?

00:42:14 - 00:42:19 | Speaker 1:

Boy, Red Bean feels very weird for a Dorito. I'll say Military.

00:42:20 - 00:42:33 | Speaker 2:

I believe you are correct. It was part of the Battle of Colwesi, an airborne operation by French and Belgian airborne forces that took place in May of 1978 in Zaire.

00:42:34 - 00:42:34 | Speaker 1:

Wow.

00:42:35 - 00:42:35 | Speaker 2:

Yeah.

00:42:35 - 00:42:36 | Speaker 1:

I wonder why it was called Red Bean.

00:42:37 - 00:42:41 | Speaker 2:

Let me see here. Can I get to that part? I'd already closed that tab. It's often a very obscure.

00:42:41 - 00:42:45 | Speaker 1:

It's often something that's so obscure as to almost be meaningless with military ops.

00:42:45 - 00:43:00 | Speaker 2:

Yeah. Let's see here. Does it say Red Bean? Oh, they ate a lot of red beans. Oh, it was an invasion of red beans. No, I don't know. It's way too much. It's a bunch of words here that are blurring together because they're all too hard to say. So I'm going to just keep moving here. How about golden pheasant?

00:43:01 - 00:43:08 | Speaker 1:

Golden pheasant. That would be so awesome. I really wish that was a Dorito. But I will, again, say military op.

00:43:08 - 00:43:17 | Speaker 2:

It is indeed a military operation. Operation golden pheasant was in the... It makes me, as I'm reading this, I'm getting more and more nervous. Like, I don't know what was going on in Zaire, but I'm just like...

00:43:17 - 00:43:18 | Speaker 1:

Was it real bad?

00:43:18 - 00:43:21 | Speaker 2:

Yeah, like, what side of history are we on?

00:43:21 - 00:43:22 | Speaker 1:

Was the golden pheasant on?

00:43:23 - 00:43:24 | Speaker 2:

Let's see here.

00:43:24 - 00:43:25 | Speaker 1:

Probably not the right one.

00:43:25 - 00:43:35 | Speaker 2:

Pheasant under glass. Operation golden pheasant was an emergency deployment of U.S. troops to Honduras in 1988. We're talking about the Nicaraguan Contra attacks.

00:43:35 - 00:43:38 | Speaker 1:

No, I don't think we covered ourselves in glory on that one either.

00:43:38 - 00:43:47 | Speaker 2:

No, funny. That was the one miss by the U.S. military. Bummer. Let's see here. How about pig bristle?

00:43:48 - 00:43:50 | Unknown:

Oh, God.

00:43:50 - 00:43:52 | Speaker 1:

I'll say military

00:43:52 - 00:44:00 | Speaker 2:

You're right Operation Pig Bristle Was an unusual transport task Conducted by the Royal Australian Air Force

00:44:00 - 00:44:01 | Speaker 1:

Okay

00:44:01 - 00:44:03 | Speaker 2:

How about that In May of 1946

00:44:03 - 00:44:10 | Speaker 1:

Pig Bristle definitely made me think Of something in the Some Commonwealth country Doing something You know

00:44:10 - 00:44:14 | Speaker 2:

Sure I'm just I'm trying to figure this Mrs. Dragon's Fire

Mrs. Dragon's Fire

00:44:16 - 00:44:23 | Speaker 2:

Mrs. Dragon's Fire Is that an Operation Mrs. Dragon's Fire or is that that's a good one right it doesn't make sense

00:44:23 - 00:44:30 | Speaker 1:

for either. It doesn't really make sense for either I guess I'll I guess I'll go out on a limb and say a Dorito. You are correct

00:44:30 - 00:44:32 | Speaker 2:

go ahead and go out on a limb and give yourself a

00:44:32 - 00:44:39 | Speaker 1:

ring-a-ding. I am so I wish this was somehow I wish I could somehow monetize this obvious talent I have

00:44:39 - 00:45:00 | Speaker 2:

Genevieve taquitos.net has the floor please the chair recognizes taquitos.net This much-anticipated new flavor of Doritos was supposed to have a hot wasabi taste, so between the promised wasabi and the fire-breathing dragon on the bag, we were very eager.

00:45:00 - 00:46:00 | Speaker 1:

to try it i the first sentence always sounds like they're setting up disappointment yeah but not always true the chips had a yellow green overall color um as the yellow tortilla chips had an uneven coating of wasabi like green powder i crunched into the first one to find that they were very tasty with an impressive kick of wasabi the wasabi flavor had a slight delay to it that makes sense right yeah these kind of sound good and it worked well uh with the underlying corn chip and mix of spices uh texture the same mouth feel wasabi definitely brought uh these flavors somewhere closer than doritos have ever been before closer to what who knows i lost the why was it mrs dragons i don't know i'm wondering here from the package from the base of mount fuji this dragon a symbol of luck has brought doritos brand one of japan's most intense flavors so i'm guessing this might have been um just a available in japan uh-huh maybe maybe maybe the translation maybe something is lost in the translation or yeah or that's just the maybe the style what

00:46:00 - 00:46:18 | Speaker 2:

about tangy pickle operation tangy pickle tangy pickle tangy pickle i mean hey save it for our anniversary um that to me sounds like something they would have in canada or the uk i will say

00:46:18 - 00:46:33 | Speaker 1:

Doritos. Oh, you're right. You're right. I love a pickle chip. Yeah. Dorito. It is a Dorito. Ring-a-ding-ding. This new Doritos flavor had a light yellow color generally with just occasional seasoning scattered on the surfaces. Some of it light in color, some black. I crunched in. Often crunching in.

00:46:34 - 00:46:38 | Speaker 2:

Yeah, they never just bite it or eat it. They always crunched in. I appreciate that.

00:46:38 - 00:47:14 | Speaker 1:

It's a nice crisp. No cheese to the taste. Instead, a definite pickle flavor. As for the tangy part, I'm not sure what they're trying to do here i think they were trying to make it tangy uh the pickle flavor was pretty standard among pickle flavored chips with an intensity not nearly as strong as some but well stronger than others so i guess a middle of the road pickle chip for you there let's see how about we just do one more here and again i'm just sort of clicking around randomly on this quiz um i want to make the last one a good one vittles that's got to be a military

00:47:14 - 00:47:14 | Speaker 2:

Very up.

00:47:15 - 00:47:16 | Speaker 1:

Operation Vittles.

00:47:16 - 00:47:17 | Speaker 2:

That's got to be a food drop.

00:47:18 - 00:47:19 | Speaker 1:

You are probably right.

00:47:19 - 00:47:21 | Speaker 2:

I feel like I even know that from history.

00:47:21 - 00:47:57 | Speaker 1:

Let's see. Yeah, it was an airlift, Berlin, 1948 to 1949. So, yeah, I see. The Soviet Union blocked. Oh, go ahead. Sorry. Do you want to do that in the clear? Good. The Soviet Union blocked all land routes connecting the non-communist sectors of Western Berlin with Western Germany, isolating 2 million people. Did I say Berlin before instead of Berlin? Because we lived in New Hampshire and there's a town called Berlin there that you're supposed to pronounce Berlin. Right. And now that I'm out of New Hampshire and nobody knows that, I feel like I'm often mispronouncing the country. Or I'm sorry, the city.

00:47:57 - 00:48:01 | Speaker 2:

I feel like you said it right. If so, if you said it wrong, it didn't catch my ear.

00:48:01 - 00:48:03 | Speaker 1:

Did I accidentally call Berlin a country?

00:48:03 - 00:48:07 | Speaker 2:

You did do that. That one stopped me.

00:48:07 - 00:48:24 | Speaker 1:

You know what? That one's on me. One thing I did not mention, by the way, at the top of the show today is that because you and I are recording this show on the day it's published this Friday, we are going to wish some people some happy blurs days or since it's a Friday, flurs day.

00:48:24 - 00:48:43 | Speaker 3:

There's a right way to rock and a wrong way to roll. You can't just listen to your soul. Just remember that life is number one. You can't be having so much fun. Just remember that life is much fun.

00:48:43 - 00:48:44 | Speaker 1:

It just gives up there.

00:48:44 - 00:48:47 | Speaker 3:

You can't be number one.

00:48:47 - 00:49:04 | Speaker 1:

I'm giving you the sound boxes If you choose to use them To punctuate these few Blur's Day wishes we have No pressure though I feel like the show is very chaotic today I don't think I'm running a very tight ship

00:49:04 - 00:49:05 | Speaker 2:

Yeah, it's alright

00:49:05 - 00:50:01 | Speaker 1:

It's a Friday, it's Friday vibes There it is Yeah, I get that right up on the microphone there Yeah, go ahead Let the fun begin You're good at that Mary says, happy Blur's Day to Kelly. I'm sorry your birthday falls so close to Christmas. As your mother, I feel some responsibility there. But what's done is done. What's done is done, and what's done is Kelly. Mary says, I hope you have a marvelous birthday. Bad timing and all. And a marvelous year. I'm seriously thinking of getting you an ice cream cake, So make room in your freezer, love ma. I don't eat it all that often. I don't go to a lot of birthday parties. But I love me an ice cream cake. Oh, me too. The part where they have the little crunch. eat chocolate stuff around the edge.

00:50:01 - 00:50:07 | Speaker 2:

Now, is that unique to Carvel's ice cream cakes? Oh, I don't think so. Or does everybody do it?

00:50:07 - 00:50:15 | Speaker 1:

I feel like Carvel started it, though. I've never differentiated. Well, Carvel's the best. Yeah. They do the Fudgy the Whale. What is that?

00:50:16 - 00:50:22 | Speaker 2:

What is that? Fudgy the Whale is the most famous ice cream cake in the world.

00:50:22 - 00:50:23 | Speaker 1:

It's a cake in the shape of a whale?

00:50:23 - 00:50:32 | Speaker 2:

Yeah, but what's great about it is that the molds that they use, if they flip it a different orientation it makes some other character I think maybe like

00:50:32 - 00:50:36 | Speaker 1:

oh is it like if you look at it one way it looks like a young woman you look at it another way it's an old woman

00:50:36 - 00:50:43 | Speaker 2:

yeah but they decorate it differently so it's like it makes a different like you know I think one way it's a Santa and one way it's Fudgy the Whale

00:50:43 - 00:50:44 | Speaker 1:

oh a Santa year round

00:50:44 - 00:50:54 | Speaker 2:

I don't know I'm just saying like we're reaching the limits of my Fudgy the Whale trivia but I just can't believe you've never heard of it

00:50:54 - 00:50:55 | Speaker 1:

well I just hope Kelly's eating a Fudgy the Whale

00:50:55 - 00:50:57 | Speaker 2:

me too

00:50:57 - 00:51:11 | Speaker 1:

for their birthday Happy birthday, Kelly. Teresa says, happy birthday to me, wishing me a happy, healthy, easy-peasy year filled with lots of laughing at and with my imaginary TBTL friends and my real friends, too.

00:51:12 - 00:51:14 | Unknown:

Don't miss the sausage fast.

00:51:15 - 00:51:16 | Speaker 2:

That one didn't fit.

00:51:16 - 00:51:19 | Speaker 1:

You got to get right up on that microphone.

00:51:19 - 00:51:21 | Speaker 2:

Don't miss the sausage fast.

00:51:21 - 00:51:29 | Speaker 1:

There it is. That's for you, Teresa. Happy Blurs Day. Hope you have a great one. Easy peasy, lemon squeezy.

00:51:30 - 00:51:32 | Speaker 2:

Difficult, difficult, lemon difficult.

00:51:33 - 00:51:47 | Speaker 1:

It's a quote from In The Loop. God, I love that movie. I put that on the other night. That's one that is on one of the streaming services, which is I've seen it so many times when it's so complicated that that is a movie that I can always just put on at any point and just sort of enjoy the dialogue for a little bit, dip in and dip out.

00:51:47 - 00:51:56 | Speaker 2:

Yeah, and it's, I mean, the plot, it's an intricate plot, but it almost doesn't matter. Yeah. Because it's really just about the way people are with each other.

00:51:57 - 00:52:29 | Speaker 1:

finally jake says dear stephanie in portland you are the best okay i gotta talk about something here i sent an email to jake but jake has not responded i did it right before the show so there is some language in here that i believe is inside jokes between jake and stephanie but it also says you are the best partner in crim and i can't tell if that's an inside joke along with the other ones, or if it's a typo.

00:52:29 - 00:52:30 | Speaker 2:

Sure, yeah, it could go either way.

00:52:30 - 00:52:32 | Speaker 1:

I'm going to go with Krim because it's funnier.

00:52:32 - 00:52:37 | Speaker 2:

It's funnier. I hope it's partner in Krim. If you weren't, hey, if you weren't partners in Krim before, you are now.

00:52:38 - 00:53:07 | Speaker 1:

Jake says, dear Stephanie in Portland, you are the best partner in Krim and a great Milch lady, M-I-L-S-H. Now, when I wrote to Jake, I said, hey, is Krim an inside joke the way Milch is? Because I don't know what either one of them are. And then it occurred to me after I hit send, I don't want to take credit for this joke if it's not mine, but I'm wondering if that's a reference to, I think, a long time on the show, I referred to a woman as Milch, a woman I'd like to say hi to.

00:53:09 - 00:53:10 | Speaker 2:

I do think you did.

00:53:10 - 00:53:29 | Speaker 1:

I think that might be what Milch is there. Anyway, so from Jake, dear Stephanie in Portland, your best partner in Krim and a great Milch lady. Hopefully this next year is chill. Love you tons and tons and hope you had a fun Blursday season XOXO Harry No Milch Man slash CB

00:53:29 - 00:53:31 | Speaker 2:

That's a lot to unpack

00:53:31 - 00:53:33 | Speaker 1:

I don't know what any of that is

00:53:33 - 00:53:34 | Speaker 2:

That's my wife

00:53:34 - 00:53:47 | Speaker 1:

If I see Stephanie I will say hi Happy Blursday Stephanie Or Flursday Alright Genevieve I know you gotta get out of here you have an appointment Gotta get my teeth cleaned

00:53:47 - 00:54:30 | Speaker 2:

I'm going to a new dentist oh that's exciting it is it's a little nerve-wracking yeah i'm going to a new dentist i lied to my old dentist about why i didn't uh want to go to them anymore i just said it was geography related but it was actually that i just didn't have a great experience with one cavity filling and also the um hygienist is like too on all the time and i just like i can't be in such a vulnerable open-mouthed position and have someone kind of doing bits on me and also i they've showed me the same animal planet episode every time i've been there like you get tv i don't even get another dvd i don't even get tv though i would prefer no tv at this point i have seen the story

00:54:30 - 00:54:49 | Speaker 1:

of this um fish grow up a lot i will say that i love my dentist um last time i went and it was a little bit weird though because the hygienist didn't know the doctor's name and I couldn't tell if the doctor was new or if they might have like kind of a circuit of dentists who maybe work at different facilities but it was not

00:54:49 - 00:54:51 | Speaker 2:

the answer is troubling yeah

00:54:51 - 00:56:26 | Speaker 1:

it is sort of strange his name was Andrew as well I was in the it was actually the whole thing was weird I know we got to get you out of here I just said that but we'll keep the music for your weekend short um i know you want to play a song and then a listener had a song to play i'll skip my pick i've got plenty of time i've got half an hour okay um but first of all i walked into my i've been going to the same dentist for years now and i'm in the waiting room first of all when i show up there's nobody at the front desk so i just sort of mill about a bit then i just sit down and then eventually i kind of check in with the young woman there and then i'm sitting there and some guy walks in and i can't explain why but i could just tell that he wasn't there for a dental appointment i don't know i can't explain to you why he just did not have a i'm here for a teeth um his mouth was sewn shut but the thing is and it was funny because i was like i'm trying not to stare but i'm just kind of like this guy is not here for for dental anything um and then he says i'm looking for andrew and i'm like what's going on and then the one with the front desk says oh yeah is that food for andrew he was a delivery driver dropping off some um i think quiznos or something okay for an andrew who apparently works there so i'm like oh that's not mine um so the guy who definitely was not there for a dental visit leaves then i go back i get my uh teeth cleaned by somebody who i don't think has cleaned my teeth before she is incredibly thorough i have had a lot of different hygienists in my time yeah and some the it's pretty easy in that chair yeah but you're also like but what am i paying what am i paying for but also like it's

00:56:26 - 00:56:30 | Speaker 2:

it's a double-edged sword which is what it feels like they're using on your house sometimes

00:56:30 - 00:56:40 | Speaker 1:

yeah this woman definitely used a double-edged sword she was she was very i could just tell like before she even put a tool in my mouth like i could tell like this woman is

00:56:40 - 00:56:44 | Speaker 2:

means business strapped out very nice by the way she rolled up the she rolled the gloves on

00:56:44 - 00:58:06 | Speaker 1:

yeah exactly um i uh but by the way none of that is i this is not criticism i could just tell she was just like she was a very polite person but she was just like very into like yeah her t-shirt said helga's house of pain but anyway she cleans my teeth and then she's like i'm gonna get the dentist to give you a quick exam i'm like okay that's fine i wasn't sure if it was a cleaning and an exam or whatever so then i'm waiting and then i unlocked dad level achievement when i dozed off in the chair it took so long for the doctor to come and i've never fallen asleep in the dentist I know my dad used to talk about doing that when he was like you know like a middle-aged man like me but he was like you know burning the candle at both ends and had a long commute and was just like working super long hours and we'd always make fun of him they could fall asleep anywhere but like a dentist's chair right but there I was and the reason I fell asleep was well I was dozing and I was tired I guess and a middle-aged man and you were supine and yeah and the doctor just never showed up I mean eventually he did but like we're waiting and we're waiting and the hygienist keeps apologizing, but honestly, I didn't have anywhere else to be. It was a late afternoon visit. I was like, whatever. But then he comes in and she's like, oh, are you Dr. So-and-so? So I'm like, well, that's weird that you guys don't know each other. I feel like we should have established that bond before I'm in earshot.

00:58:06 - 00:58:09 | Speaker 3:

Yeah, at a minimum, like do that conversation out in the hall.

00:58:09 - 00:58:38 | Speaker 1:

And then he introduces himself to me as Andrew. And I'm like, oh, you're Andrew. How was that sandwich? And he was like, oh, pretty good. And it wasn't until later that I was wondering, was I waiting for him to eat that fucking sandwich? The whole time? I think that if he started that sandwich when it showed up, that's fine. But what if he was seeing a patient and then he was on his lunch break while I'm falling asleep in the chair like my dad? Wow. Yeah. I didn't ask him that though.

00:58:39 - 00:58:48 | Speaker 3:

Probably best not to. Is that what you were doing back then? Not doing it. Don't antagonize the person who makes the call about whether you are or are not getting a filling.

00:58:48 - 01:00:01 | Speaker 1:

Okay, one last thing on this. I didn't think I had a tight 45 or a loose 45 on this dental visit, but apparently there's something else that I've been thinking about. Whenever I've gone to the dentist, I've had essentially a clean bill of health. I've never had any cavities. There was a period where I didn't go for a really long time, so I had to get pretty deep cleaning. But aside from that, it's been fine. one time years and years and years ago this you know dental office whoever the dentist was that day said you know we're just we want to keep an eye on one little part of a molar back here like do you feel anything when we poke at it I'm like nope I've had no issues whatever like it just feels a little bit soft like nothing's wrong but let's just keep an eye on that maybe get it capped off or something in case it gets worse and so that's been living in the back of my head I'm deathly afraid of cavities but I've gone back many times I mean that was pre-pandemic yeah you're fine this guy examines my mouth he's like yeah everything looks good and then he's like you know there's one area that we have on the chart that we're supposed to watch out for it's just this one um molar that you have back there and he's like you know we're keeping an eye on it and I'm like well you just saw it for the first time my boy uh and I said well to

01:00:00 - 01:00:53 | Speaker 3:

when was that first flagged and he's like oh i don't know i'm like well i only ask because it was mentioned once years and years and years ago pre-pandemic but nobody's mentioned any anything since and i've had many exams since then he's like oh god it's like i don't know like i i think there there might be a way to like dig in and find out when that was first put on your chart but i don't really know and i'm just thinking andrew dentist andrew dr andrew dr andrew you're telling me first of all i don't know if this guy was a dentist that's what i'm coming back from the dentist didn't know the hygienist yeah and he's i mean it seems to me that one of the most basic things i i've never seen like medical charts or that software but don't you think it would be this visit on july whatever 2018 that's when this was flagged it would be

01:00:53 - 01:01:27 | Speaker 2:

nice to think that that is true and i i think he's probably right that like there's probably that data exists somewhere but i can also understand how since health is sort of a rolling kind of like every your health is kind of a rolling contingency kind of thing right so like it's not necessarily i think the thing they care more about is like what happened in the last two or three visits something that happened five years ago because that's almost going to be irrelevant or it should be and so i understand why the software doesn't optimize for when did this

01:01:27 - 01:01:32 | Speaker 3:

first come on the scene really yeah it would be a very basic thing like i mean i agree and it

01:01:32 - 01:01:43 | Speaker 2:

probably should be but it's also i just think that that saw and also that you know as we know from friends who work in this industry like the whole medical technology and software business is

01:01:43 - 01:02:09 | Speaker 3:

pretty effed yeah um all right well let's do a little music for your weekend um let's see here i i am gonna there's not a song specifically that is like really um kind of burning me up right now You got me a record player for Christmas, which has been amazing. I've been listening to a lot of records, but listening to a lot of jazz and stuff. I've already played jazz for Music for Your Weekend the past couple of weeks, I think. I'm not going to do that again. Also, you hate jazz.

01:02:09 - 01:02:10 | Speaker 2:

I really do not like jazz.

01:02:10 - 01:02:22 | Speaker 3:

Do you want to do your imitation of jazz? That was my Music for Your Weekend. Genevieve has doing her imitation of jazz. So now I will let you introduce your song. What did you pick out?

01:02:22 - 01:02:32 | Speaker 2:

I picked out this song that like keeps coming on my my algorithm keeps finding it and I and I don't I'm not surprised because I like it a lot it's called Oysters in My Pocket by Royal Otis they're

01:02:32 - 01:02:53 | Speaker 3:

an Australian pop band and were you familiar with them before this or the algorithm just dialed this up algorithm just knew and you mentioned to me several times that it sort of reminds you of a band now I don't know why I just bring up a more obscure band but a band that we listen to a lot in New Hampshire they were not a New Hampshire band I think they were from like one of the carolinas and they were called the magic numbers yeah it reminds me a little bit of that it's got

01:02:53 - 01:02:59 | Speaker 2:

this very like bouncy poppy feel to it that i that reminds me of that band cool let's take a listen

01:02:59 - 01:03:00 | Speaker 3:

this is oysters in my pocket

01:03:00 - 01:03:30 | Speaker 1:

We'll be right back.

01:03:30 - 01:03:49 | Speaker 3:

I like that a lot.

01:03:49 - 01:03:52 | Speaker 2:

It's also got sort of an, it's like the cure were really upbeat.

01:03:52 - 01:04:59 | Speaker 3:

A little jangly. Yeah. And some of the cure stuff is more upbeat than people, I think. Yeah, that's true. Not all of it, of course. Yeah, I do like that a lot. I watched a bit of the video when you sent this to me yesterday, and I immediately said, oh, they must be Australian. Because number one, as you said, all of our favorite bands these days are Australian. But also the very first shot of the video is somebody standing in front of one of those giant sculptures of like a prawn. Yes. And that's one of the things that Australia is known for that. And is Australia known for anything other than large recreations of animals? Nope. Nope. That's the only thing. That's about it. Okay, this is very appropriate for our anniversary weekend. This is very sweet. I did not write any love notes to you this anniversary weekend, at least not yet. But Laura sort of wrote one for us, actually, related to this song that we'll go out with. The song is called A Boy Named Pluto by Hayley Knox. But this is what Laura writes. This is very sweet. I'm going to try not to cry. I heard this song a couple of weeks ago, and I immediately thought of TBTL. It's called A Boy Named Pluto. So part of me doesn't want to spoil the best part of the song.

01:05:00 - 01:05:09 | Speaker 1:

but Andrew and Genevieve's relationship is one I admire so much from their inside jokes to their love of words. This is where you say, which one of us knows what words mean.

01:05:09 - 01:05:10 | Speaker 2:

I think we both love them.

01:05:11 - 01:05:41 | Speaker 1:

But you know how to use them. Why don't you just shut me down and you're like, which one of us knows what words mean? And the contentment that they find in each other's company. The way this song turns Genevieve's name into a light, airy, harmonious sound is just so beautiful. Thanks for being you and sharing your small daily joys and inside jokes with all of us. So that's very sweet. That's from listener Laura. Laura, by the way, Laura's in Kenoki, Michigan, and she's the one who sent me that really cool hockey hat.

01:05:41 - 01:05:42 | Speaker 2:

Oh, I love that hat.

01:05:42 - 01:05:43 | Speaker 1:

The Nordiques.

01:05:43 - 01:05:44 | Speaker 2:

Oh, it's such a good hat.

01:05:44 - 01:05:56 | Speaker 1:

It's a really, really cool hat. And it's funny. I don't wear it all because it's so beautiful. I don't wear it all that often. But when I do, I do get comments. People are like, Nordiques fan. I'm just like, this is my worst nightmare.

01:05:56 - 01:06:02 | Speaker 2:

You've got to learn like three facts about the Nordiques so you can just be like, you can just like drop one and then be like, oh, I got to go.

01:06:02 - 01:06:38 | Speaker 1:

It's a really, really nice hat. Thank you for that. And thank you for the song. I like it. I hope you like it too, Genevieve. It is fun to hear somebody singing your name in such a nice kind of a twee little way here. We have another song called Genevieve, but it's like a hard rocking song that we use on After These Messages, which is where you can hear Genevieve, by the way. if you want more Genevieve has in your life check out after these messages a weekly podcast that we do every Tuesday about TV commercials and don't tell me you don't like TV commercials it doesn't matter you like us and you have opinions about commercials that's for dang sure we'll go out with this thanks for doing this Genevieve

01:06:38 - 01:06:39 | Speaker 2:

thank you it was fun to be here

01:06:39 - 01:06:40 | Speaker 1:

anything else you want to plug

01:06:40 - 01:06:42 | Speaker 2:
