There was a truly astounding character on Luke's flight this week. He and Andrew also discuss whether or not the owner of the Dodgers really "picked" his nose on camera, and they talk about the truly bonkers story developing around Shohei Ohtani and his translator.

We only have to make small talk for... 8 minutes and 45 seconds. We better keep it impersonal. Acceptable topics include what constitutes a grain, the Hubble Space Telescope, orchid varietals, the birth of the transistor...

00:00:12 - 00:00:13 | Speaker 2:

We only have to fill 8 minutes.

00:00:13 - 00:00:18 | Speaker 1:

Sure, but think about it as 480 seconds, and you'll see why I'm concerned.

00:00:18 - 00:00:22 | Speaker 2:

Oh, my God. T! T! TBTM!

00:00:26 - 00:00:31 | Speaker 1:

Guess what day it is? Guess what day it is? It's Friday!

00:00:31 - 00:00:39 | Speaker 3:

Friday! Gonna get down on Friday! Everybody's looking forward to the weekend! Jalapeno! She's buying, right?

00:00:39 - 00:00:50 | Speaker 2:

Because I will be ordering a bowl of soup as an appetizer, not a cup. Chuck, I know people say I'll fill up, but you have no idea how my body processes soup.

00:00:50 - 00:01:02 | Speaker 3:

00:01:21 - 00:03:17 | Speaker 4:

Get on the magic carpet and ride. Coming to you from Los Angeles, California for the final day this week. And it is just. It's like I'm walking on sunshine. It's a beautiful, beautiful day here in the Westchester neighborhood. The perfect kind of day to bring you episode 4168 in a collector's series. Let the fun begin. We have much to talk about today. as we like to say on the show when we're talking about sports we're not really talking about sports but in this case we're really not talking about sports when we're talking about sports we're not talking about baseball which this is a simple game you throw the ball you hit the ball you catch the ball even though the baseball season is officially kicked off we're not talking about baseball we're talking about one of the owners of the Los Angeles Dodgers possibly picking his nose and eating it on camera. You're a gross person. And we're also talking about megastar Shohei Otani's interpreter who was fired for gambling on sports apparently. That cash could really get me out of a couple of jams. This story is very weird to me and I I'm willing to say this We've either Absolutely heard the end of it Or we haven't heard the end of this It's one of those two things And we're going to talk about that And we're going to talk to this guy Longest running co-bro of the show Maybe best known for his depictions Of the tall ships He's of course known as The The owner and general manager Of the Akron Grooms He is Andrew Walsh. He's joining me right now. Good morning, my friend.

00:03:17 - 00:03:20 | Speaker 5:

The Akron Groomsman is the name of my fantasy team. Dang it.

00:03:20 - 00:03:22 | Speaker 4:

I knew there was something wrong about how I was saying that.

00:03:22 - 00:03:54 | Speaker 5:

The Akron Groomsman. Yes, I stole that. It's part of a joke that I won't fully go into detail here because I think I will truly bore everybody to death. But I think some baseball nerds will get that joke. The Akron Groomsman is the name of my fantasy team. I spent months trying to come up with a new name. Thought I came up with a good one. realized it was based on somebody who I didn't realize had a very problematic background, had to ditch that idea, and thought, I'll never come up with a new name for my fantasy. They were the O.J. Simpsons. Did you know about that? Like the murder charges and everything?

00:03:55 - 00:03:59 | Speaker 4:

There are ripples. There are rumors on the internet that I've been seeing.

00:03:59 - 00:04:21 | Speaker 5:

That was one that had totally missed me. I'm not sure if there's any follow-ups to that story or not. But yeah, so I didn't name them the O.J. Simpsons. Instead, I went with the Akron groomsmen based on a baseball joke, a tweet that went viral a few years ago and seems fitting of my team, which also ties into the whole Otani thing, which we'll be talking about later. I'm really interested in talking to you about that.

00:04:21 - 00:04:34 | Speaker 4:

I know that I'd like to say that when we talk about sports, we're not talking about sports. But I said this at the beginning of the show, but we really are going to not talk about sports when we talk about sports today. Because there is some interesting stuff going on with the Los Angeles Dodgers of baseball.

00:04:35 - 00:05:00 | Speaker 5:

I mean, very fascinating stuff, for real. I told you also before the show that I had a question for you about your sort of travel plans. I know that we're recording a little bit later than usual here, and you have been telling me, hey, no rush on anything. You're there in the Westchester neighborhood of Los Angeles until you hop on a flight tonight around 10 to go to Palm Beach.

00:05:00 - 00:05:14 | Speaker 2:

Springs. I can say that, right? I'm not sure if you said that publicly. I assume it's not for any kind of nefarious... That's outward-facing. ...gambling situation involving somebody's interpreter or not. But... We'll see how it goes at Agua

00:05:14 - 00:05:17 | Speaker 1:

Caliente Casino in downtown Palm Springs.

00:05:17 - 00:05:21 | Speaker 2:

You're going for a business, not pleasure, I take it, the Palm Springs trip?

00:05:22 - 00:05:38 | Speaker 1:

Yes, I am going... Nope, it is business. It is a story, although I'm very excited about doing this story. I had a producer from CBS Sunday Morning Reach out to me and say Would you be interested in doing a story about something called The Illuminaire House And

00:05:38 - 00:05:45 | Speaker 2:

Are you doing a story About a house in Palm Springs That does not sound like something you'd be interested in

00:05:45 - 00:06:59 | Speaker 1:

I mean I said Aria I've been preparing my entire Adult life for this story A mid-century architecture piece In Palm Springs, California It's pretty much everything In the world that I love So, yeah, the Illuminaire House was one of these kind of ideas that came around about the time of the case study homes, which was trying to figure out a an affordable way to build a bunch of houses for the American population. And it was built out of metal. And it was it's a very cool idea, but it actually didn't work out. They didn't make very many of them. And this this home, the Illuminaire House, this kind of example of this idea around construction has been in a bunch of different places. And then it's been dismantled and put back together. And it was in a shipping container, a series of shipping containers for many years. And then the I think it's the Palm Springs Art Museum acquired it and has permanently assembled it and put it in Palm Springs. and this happens to be the weekend it's called a modernism week so it's when everybody kind of comes into Palm Springs to take tours of mid-century homes and that's actually relevant to my night flight Andrew which I can tell you more about in a minute

00:06:59 - 00:07:31 | Speaker 2:

yeah and my question is very uninteresting probably and you might already have a guess as to where I'm taking this but your tood today has been very like we're recording now it's it's early afternoon and um you've been like hey no no no rush I'm here until you know my flight at 10 anyway and I'm just sort of thinking like wow that's a big hole in your day if I were traveling for pleasure especially and I love saying pleasure that way

00:07:31 - 00:07:36 | Speaker 1:

people like yeah you love saying it more than we love hearing you say no that's not that's not what

00:07:36 - 00:08:21 | Speaker 2:

the latest polls show actually i don't know if you know this but um 53 percent of democrats like the way i say pleasure um but anyway you know if i am traveling uh for vacation times especially like coming home from vacation if i have like a flight that's very late it's a real i i really hate it because i don't feel like getting into anything like i don't want to go to the beach and then try to find a place to shower you know because you're already probably have to check out of your hotel room by 11 or so i'm assuming that you since you are on business and not pleasure um i assume that you have that hotel that you're in you just probably rented it for the extra day since your flight is so late is that why you're not being that's exactly what i

00:08:21 - 00:08:40 | Speaker 1:

did right there yeah yeah that makes sense although um oh on the subject of which i got a very troubling email from the marriott corporation telling me that i have been downgraded from platinum elite to gold elite andrew which wait this is just over i thought this isn't about your

00:08:40 - 00:08:44 | Speaker 2:

where you're staying and your next leg of your trip you mean just generally speaking you're not

00:08:44 - 00:10:16 | Speaker 1:

platinum generally speaking the the bonvoy app took some time out of its day to let me know that i've lost one tier of status with bonvoy and i actually don't understand how that happened my guess is they've got a lot of people in the program and they're like upping the standards because i got to this like sort of elite level of of bond voyage which which means i get i get a four o'clock checkout oftentimes in in most hotels if they're not totally booked up which is amazing that's almost an entire additional day yeah it's i mean it's i'm kind of surprised they do it because what it means is oftentimes i don't need to book an additional night because you know if i can stay here till four or work from the hotel room or do the show with you that's that's a huge benefit um but i so i got to that what's called was called platinum elite i got to platinum elite without even realizing i was doing it and since i got to that status i now make sure to always stay at marriott properties like this is the hotel june and somehow in intentionally always staying at marriott properties i now have not qualified for that status that i used to have i'm one i'm one tier down so i think that means i get a 2 p.m checkout which is also still pretty late but i'm addicted to that platinum elite lifestyle um so yes in this particular case i have i have this hotel room all the way through uh tomorrow but i won't be using it i'll be leaving at like 8 30 tonight to um to go catch my flight the thing there's two things

00:10:16 - 00:10:26 | Speaker 2:

with that andrew one is there any listeners in la who want to use your hotel room after you leave they could have it until probably 11 tomorrow do they also get the benefit of that 2 p.m or 4 p.m

00:10:26 - 00:11:40 | Speaker 1:

I think they're going to get that 2 p.m. It's 825, room 825 at the Hotel June. You know, come and get it. But let's see, what was I going to tell you? Oh, yeah. The thing is, because I've been down here in L.A. so much lately for work, I don't feel a tremendous amount of pressure to go to the beach, to do something touristy, to really do anything that – You're talking about that kind of like a weird section of my day because when we're done with this recording, then I'll just have like a bunch of hours. Like truthfully, I'll probably read some of Dulce Sloan's book, which I am reading in preparation for next week's Livewire. I'll probably go sit by the pool and just kind of relax. But I don't, because I'm down here a lot, I don't feel any pressure to somehow make the most of today. If I just stayed in this hotel room and looked at TikTok, which is a third option and let's be honest highly possible I won't feel like I'm not taking advantage of being here because I'm here so much if I were in a place that I don't go very often maybe I'd have more of that sense but I just don't have that today

00:11:40 - 00:12:47 | Speaker 2:

and also I think having the room for the extra day really helps knowing that like even like when you say go sit by the pool you probably just mean in like the work clothes you're in now and when I say work clothes that i should let everybody know you are in a pair of coveralls and a hard yes for some reason which i appreciate it's an osha thing you could go down to the pool you could even dip into the pool if you want and still come back and again for me showers i guess really showers play a bigger role in this than anything but like you can come back to your room get cleaned up repack your bags and you know what i mean you're not like sort of in this limbo of like vives and i were in a little bit of a limbo in mexico where we had to check out of our hotel room at 11 literally got into a limbo contest at senior frogs we certainly did i pass a couple of senior frogs romantico district what they were not in uh they weren't where we were staying they were in like kind of more like kind of um well like the touristy areas where you'd probably see a uh an anti-biden t-shirt i assume um what is the deal with senior frogs anyway it's just like a it's like a chain restaurant that is prominently or exclusively in mexico that is aimed at sort of middle americans who are on a trip

00:12:47 - 00:13:25 | Speaker 1:

there i assume well there's also one in chelan and there is so there i don't think it's i don't think it's a chain though i mean the one in chelan is just a bar i think that there i think the intellectual property around senior frogs is lightly enforced by whomever owns the rights to call something senior frogs so i i just kind of use it as a sort of uh you know shorthand for that kind of bar the kind of bar where somebody maybe with a whistle who works the bar will approach you holding a bottle of tequila and trying to get you to take a shot of tequila while they blow that whistle that feels like the thing that happens at a senior frogs i'm looking

00:13:25 - 00:14:27 | Speaker 2:

at it now on their website now like the official one uh come for the food stay for the fun it seems to be the um the working slogan here um yeah and so i it's a real cabo wabo situation which is similar which is interesting because i think there actually is a senior frogs near literally cabo wabo down in cabo but um sure yeah so so anyway yeah i kind of wondered about that so you're you're in your in your um hotel room and you can just treat your hotel room like an office today you got work to do whether it's reading that book or whatever i i guess the difference between you and i is like when i am sitting down to do work like i really need to be behind a desk or a table with a laptop like both arms up on like i seriously like i am not like you or my friend hannah brooks Olson uh I don't know if you know this host of a very popular podcast called spotless um like you guys you are you take the word laptop very seriously and you like to do your work in as prone of a position as possible I take it I am very different yes I would have that thing off

00:14:27 - 00:14:50 | Speaker 1:

I actually I would have my mouse with me I like to be upside down I like to be on a teeter hang up yeah yeah just like Bruce Wayne yes precisely um if I can do that then it's my most productive Um, but the other thing is because, um, I found out something recently, which is there are no flights from Los Angeles to Palm Springs because it's actually pretty close.

00:14:50 - 00:14:53 | Speaker 2:

Yeah. And two hour drive, maybe three.

00:14:54 - 00:16:16 | Speaker 1:

Um, yeah. And the problem is because of this modernism week. everything is crazy in palm springs so we're actually staying outside of palm springs we're staying in a place called cathedral city because the expense the hotels in palm springs are so expensive right now uh that just like a regular you know hyatt or something is like 800 a night and cbs won't pay for it but it also means that i couldn't get a rental car one way because i guess too many people are already trying to do that for some reason somehow avis um was not cooperating and so i thought well like it's going to be a hassle to drive to palm springs so what i will do is i will just fly there and i i assumed there were like 30 flights a day turns out there's one flight a day it's on united airlines not my preferred carrier and it's at like 10 30 tonight so and it's just because it's one of those things where it makes almost no sense to fly to palm Springs unless you're me and you're on a kind of multi-leg work trip. So it is not an over-served market from the greater Los Angeles area. And that includes Burbank and Long Beach. I was looking all over for flights. So that's also part of why I knew that we were going to be doing some special recording today, et cetera. So it just made the most sense for me to fly there at 1030

00:16:16 - 00:16:49 | Speaker 2:

at night. Yeah, I'll bet you a lot of people who go to Palm Springs from areas other than LA might I didn't even fly into L.A. and take that drive. I've only visited there twice, and both times we drove from L.A. Once when I was living there, the other time when we were visiting L.A. and then wanted to do a second leg of our vacation. I have a thought that's a little bit chilling. It's almost so chilling I don't want to say it out loud. But have you checked your Avis status? Are you still a wizard? I mean, with your statuses falling and crumbling around you, I'm a little concerned about that.

00:16:49 - 00:17:13 | Speaker 1:

it's one of those things where i'm i'm so nervous about it i kind of can't even crack open the app yep yep um it's and i need to just sort of man up and do it and and check my status um i'm assuming at last check i was still a wizard thank god that's good so nobody's come to take your hat and wand or anything like that uh sir you can no longer tell people about our

00:17:13 - 00:17:20 | Speaker 2:

fried pickles that's a simpsons joke yeah no i know but does your big purple pointy hat have

00:17:20 - 00:18:52 | Speaker 1:

moons on it i imagine it does your wizard hat yes yes um and that is a special perk just for avis wizards so far i'm so far i'm still an avis wizard and uh and i'm still an alaska airlines a gold 75k member um although i will tell you this the flight down here we didn't actually get into this the other day the flight down here from portland was really interesting um it was also a later flight it was maybe nine o'clock at night and when i got to the area there was nobody on the flight there were multiple seats in first class that were just empty which i've been seeing more and more i didn't think that ever happened i would think they're going to grab somebody from coach and put them up in first class like just anyone who's even signed their name into the alaska airlines you know program like why not make someone's day right yeah make someone's week and also you know like yeah they're there it would just be exciting for folks um they didn't do that there were multiple seats that were empty um but when i got to the um the gate they were doing this thing they were doing trivia to give people to move people to um a more preferential seat not first class it turned out but like basically as i approached somebody was commandeering the little microphone not an alaska airline staffer and like giving out a trivia question and the and it was if you knew the answer you would get switched to a aisle or window seat of your choice it was the

00:18:52 - 00:19:00 | Speaker 2:

weird it was very hunger games what yeah and wait this was not this was not a i'm sorry i did i

00:19:00 - 00:19:05 | Speaker 1:

miss this is not no i'm i'm describing this in a confusing way i understand okay okay okay wait a

00:19:05 - 00:19:09 | Speaker 2:

second you were were you joking when you said it was not somebody who was on the airline staff

00:19:09 - 00:19:56 | Speaker 1:

it was with the approval of the gate agents so the gate agents were the ones that had to put you in a you know move your seat for you but the questions were being were being uh queried is that a verb the questions were being asked by random travelers so what would happen is i figured this out as i sat there longer the alaska airlines people said does anyone else know a trivia question and then somebody would just come up grab that microphone uh and then give a trivia question and then if you knew the answer you would go up there and you would give them the answer and then if you gave them the correct answer they would move you into a better seat this was literally happening at portland airport on like monday night what if the person asking

00:19:56 - 00:19:59 | Speaker 2:

the question has a middle seat and they want to

00:20:00 - 00:20:10 | Speaker 1:

be upgraded they don't get anything for asking the trivia question huh they're they're just they have to they have to answer a question correctly to get upgraded i have a feeling that everybody

00:20:10 - 00:20:44 | Speaker 2:

who wanted to be in a slightly better seat had already been put in a slightly better seat so this was mostly just kind of window dressing but but but it was weird it just was a weird way to hand out perks and also i sit down next to this um this couple this i think they were like a british couple actually and i don't know what the nature of their relationship with if they were family members or they were like husband and wife but the woman was trying to get the guy to go up and answer a question and he didn't want to do it to answer one he was kind of shy she must have

00:20:44 - 00:20:50 | Speaker 1:

known that he would know the answer but he was too shy to do it she just wanted to get better seats

00:20:50 - 00:22:23 | Speaker 2:

and the one of the questions was from this guy who comes up later in the story by the way this dude like gets up there and he says what is the term for when airline employees fly for free what's the airline term for that dead heading no that is a term for a version of that i think that's but but it's technically it's called non-rev non-revenue they're not making any money on it got so i was sitting there and i said to the the guy i go i think it's called rev share which it isn't i was wrong um i said i think it might be called rev share and he goes oh really and the woman goes go up there and tell him go up there and tell him and he was like i don't want to and she's like go up there and tell him so he finally goes up and tells them rev share and they go wrong and they're not going to move him to a better seat and i'm like i'm now yelling from where i'm like he had 50 of it right he had rev also this whole thing is just to move people to better seats like we're not like the the getting the trivia right is not a necessary condition for moving this nice british couple to better seats like oh my god i can't believe you're being a stickler about this this insane squid game that you came up with for better seats and now you're going to be a hard ass about rev share versus non-rev what was the interaction like when he came back to sit down next to you he started to walk away and then somebody there went actually

00:22:23 - 00:22:29 | Speaker 1:

come back we'll just put you in a better seat oh well like so he ultimately got it but it took them

00:22:29 - 00:23:35 | Speaker 2:

a long time and there was a moment where it was like he was going to come back to his waiting area with his person he was traveling with embarrassed for having gone up there and having gotten it wrong and not getting a better seat because of my advice that was saying it's called rev share when in fact it's a non-rev we would have also accepted yelling and then you're yelling yes i'm now yelling when when they i had a lot invested when they turned him away i was like he got half of it right like now i'm side note i'm in first class i don't care i de-gaff okay i don't need this in my life right now i just want to get on the flight and go down to uh go down to california anyway the the guy who had who had posed that question and who was just super talkative he also was in first class and he was across the aisle from me and he i'm i'm very certain this man was on a lot of cocaine he was about the setup here are you

00:23:35 - 00:23:46 | Speaker 1:

both an empty are you both the only people in your rows so you have kind of direct even though okay not okay but you're at the you're a window seat person the way that this particular plane

00:23:46 - 00:25:11 | Speaker 2:

was set up in first class there is a row of single seats oh and then there's a row of two seats and i always take single seat if i can get it they're not particularly by even by first class standards they're not particularly luxurious seats they're kind of regular they seem like they're kind of regular airline seats but it's very nice to just be in your own solo seat against the window because you're in both a window and an aisle so that's where i was let's say that i was in row like four he was across from me and there was a guy in between us this poor poor bastard who was probably excited he probably got upgraded to first class and he was like great i'm gonna have this comfy flight he sits down in his seat and is sitting next to this guy who's andrew and i tell you the guy was literally vibrating it was so distracting it was like the guy that i was talking about except he wasn't negative per se but it was kind of like the guy that i was sitting next to at the bar who was super toxic i was talking about on yesterday's show yeah this guy was talking so loud it was so distracting on the airplane you know there's like that kind of noise there's that ambient hum on an airplane that drowns out most conversation this guy was talking in such a loud and animated fashion about by the way inappropriate topics like like what cities have the most women that will potentially sleep with you topics of this nature we're being yelled over the din of the airplane by a guy who again i'm pretty

00:25:11 - 00:25:18 | Speaker 1:

sure was on a lot of cocaine aside from his energy can you describe him physically for me

00:25:18 - 00:26:06 | Speaker 2:

are you comfortable doing that a walking cialis he had like a tribal tattoo he had like he had that ruddy kind of joe rogan kind of complexion of a person who's either seen dr arakaki or is just kind of running a like a his bac is mostly cialis it's most he's like a 0.08 of levitra at all times cac no no bcc i guess blood cialis um what is my uh bcls anyway yes are just uh are just are pretty high he had sort of had like a kind of um he was i would say he was about my age he had okay that's why i was getting

00:26:06 - 00:26:13 | Speaker 1:

it i thought a little bit older but no okay like no about probably my age maybe yeah and had uh

00:26:13 - 00:28:15 | Speaker 2:

you know i don't think he had it on but i think energetically he was wearing a puka shell necklace okay sure like yeah and you know kind of a collared shirt that was a couple of buttons unbuttoned and the kind of guy the kind of guy who definitely is married but is also setting up a hinge profile on his flight for when he lands in whatever city he's going to which by the way is a thing that somebody got busted for on the internet recently there's a whole world now of and i've been meaning to talk to you about this of content that is basically women ratting out guys and groups of guys that are behaving inappropriately uh in like bachelor parties and things and this has become or a guy who is setting up like a dating profile even though he's also been facetiming his wife uh you know on the flight or before the flight and then then the the flight takes off and then he switches over to setting up a dating profile and the woman sitting next to him documents all of it and when the flight lands she says if you're married to a guy and then she gives the description a very specific description he is setting up a hinge profile um and then the the bachelor party version of it is if you're engaged to a guy whose name rhymes with smike smadams and he was in las vegas on this date and they give a bunch of details that would only relate to one person you know they were out trying to get on girl whatever it's and it's like tick tock do your thing and it's become this big thing which i fully support honest well i i fully support it in that it's a punishment for guys that are being creeps in my opinion i do kind of think it's a little bit unregulated right now yeah anyone could get on there and say anything and then the the internet just i i assume that these people who are putting this content up are being honest um but you could also just really ruin someone's life by just getting on there and saying anything because there's no there's there's no fact checking on it it's just kind of like right okay again it's very believable it's like

00:28:15 - 00:29:16 | Speaker 1:

why would this person make this up um well other than to go viral which people do like to do sure um yeah no i'm with you it's a little bit complicated because generally i'm like not only i i've heard i've heard about this from podcasts or whatever i've heard people kind of talking about it and debating it i haven't gone deep into it generally speaking i do not care if some sleazeball guy gets busted um for being a sleazeball um but generally speaking yeah any kind anything that is sort of like um kind of mob justice in that way you're really putting a lot of faith in the poster the person posting it and also and then like and then where do you draw the lines you know and like what you also I mean listen I don't think this is the case with most of these most of these probably jerks or whatever but like you know you also don't know what somebody's relationship is maybe they're married and in an open relationship i mean again i don't probably account for a huge percentage of this but also it's it's something to consider it's like both like i like sort of seeing people get their due but on the other hand like you also don't know

00:29:16 - 00:30:00 | Speaker 2:

people's journeys so i don't know yeah well in fact that happened in one of the cases uh because i was following it with great interest the um the guy who set up the hinge profile eventually his wife reached out to the person who posted it she relayed all this and said basically yeah i've i i know about this it's a thing he likes to do because he likes to get the attention it's it's a known thing in our relationship that he sets up these he sets up these profiles and he flirts with girls and i'm okay with it is what the and so the woman who had posted was like hey look you know everyone gets to live their life so that was kind of the end of that story apparently um but the other thing that's kind of interesting is now one of the...

00:30:00 - 00:30:37 | Speaker 1:

I think this was maybe bachelor party related bachelor party run amok. She then I saw her basically starting to out the guys who were in her comments saying, how dare you ruin this guy's life? So then she was like, hey, if your boyfriend or husband is this guy who's been commenting on my page, calling me a jerk for outing this bachelor party, you're married to or dating a guy who thinks it's okay to cheat so she's now outing it's just a real scorched earth situation she's now outing the people who are being critical of her about

00:30:37 - 00:33:05 | Speaker 2:

outing the guy at the bachelor party i i want to be very careful as i tell this sort of non-story here which that really sets you up everybody buckle up i'm gonna be very careful as i tell this non-story. Now, I do have to be very careful because it's a very serious thing. But a good friend of mine who uses I don't know what app she uses, but she uses a dating app recently found herself on a kind of a bad date, not like the worst date in the world, but not a good date with a guy that she, you know, just it was a first date and she didn't really like him. He seemed sort of cheap and not a good conversationalist and these types of things. And I think he I think he maybe We even dropped her off somewhere after the date. But I don't know what it was. She just wanted to, like, know more about him or something. I don't know if he was withholding or what it was. But she Googled him after the date and found out that he had served time for assault, for assault on women, like, on random women. And the reason I'm thinking about that is because the kind of, I think, the better side of this is aside from the, hey, I'm going to try to get this tick tock to go viral. And maybe you're you know, if your man's name rhymes with Mike Smatters or whatever you said before. But like there are groups that I know my friend now utilizes on like Facebook or something like that, where women can just sort of share experiences and names of people and just saying, hey, listen, just so you know, I had this experience on this date that was not good. I would avoid this person who's on the apps or or, you know, I think in my friend's case, she just nothing. And I want to say that, like my friend, I mean, thank God nothing bad happened to her. And as far as I know, she has not had any more contact with this person. And I don't think that he acted inappropriate with her in other ways other than just being kind of like a dud. But having said that, I mean, imagine the feeling when you go back home and you see this person you were just on a date with in news articles because of being guilty of these very. I mean, you must feel like the, you know, such a near miss situation. So it's sort of good. It's sort of empowering to know that there are these groups where women specifically, but all kinds of people, I'm sure, can sort of say, hey, watch out for this dangerous situation. That's good. But that's not just sort of throwing a kite up in the air and sort of broadcasting one person's business and hoping that it sort of catches wind.

00:33:05 - 00:33:41 | Speaker 1:

Yes. And I think that this guy who was flying next to me was on his way to be involved in some story like that. I'm sure there's some there's somebody now literally right now posting a video going if your husband has a tribal tattoo on his left arm but he was being so loud and again so like he was this poor guy sitting next to him you could just see the guy working through all of the stages of grief realizing that this was his seatmate it was the like uh-huh uh-huh crazy uh-huh uh-huh and then get the laptop out and then open the laptop and try to like be like well try to get

00:33:41 - 00:33:45 | Speaker 2:

some work done you know what i mean like he was doing gotta put those headphones in at some point

00:33:45 - 00:36:10 | Speaker 1:

all of the things that you do to try to indicate to someone that you're done with the conversation and the guy was just completely um undeterred and it was so loud that it was distracting me and i was playing through my mind like can i say something that what do you say to the flight attendant um hey there's a person sitting in my row who's just being annoying in a way that i don't like can you like you know i mean i don't is there an air marshal on board or just a more polite person that might come over and zip tie this guy's mouth shut like what are we doing then i get up to use the restroom and i come back and i notice something literally as i'm stepping out of the the the little bathroom up at the front of the plane i realized there is a calm that has come over the flight and it's because the guy has passed out he's now sleeping and i'm like this is so great and this is what it's like our listeners who are parents know what this feels like when your kid falls asleep like you're driving home from somewhere and they fall asleep in the back of the car you're like oh my god this is so great and you're just trying do not wake them up i sit down and it goes about like three minutes of just like blissful silence on the plane and then they effed laughing turn on the lights the cabin lights for some reason to like make an announcement i don't know why the lights need to be on but it was like they woke up a baby they turn on the cabin lights and he goes and then he just goes right back into it good lord i was like you like i was so mad at the flight crew they had no idea what they were doing i was so mad at the flight crew for turning the light on on the plane the lights on because yeah it woke this this guy up um but anyway my theory is because he was so amped and he was so motor mouthy and so in my opinion coked up i think he proposed this entire trivia thing to the staff because he was giving out he was going up there and talking into the mic when i got there and i've never seen this before i highly doubt that the crew um or the the you know the people working at the gate were like let's do I have a feeling they were trying to sort of placate this guy in some way I have a feeling somehow this conversation involved him before I got there he's like hey you know it would be really fun hey we should do this you know imagine uh Tom Arnold before sobriety that was this guy do I have

00:36:10 - 00:36:32 | Speaker 2:

to let me ask you this this is I feel like it's an important question um and again I think it's You have no problem saying what your travels are. This was a flight from Portland to Los Angeles? Correct. City of Angels? Yes. I'm assuming that this was an L.A. guy who was visiting Portland? Or do I have that backwards?

00:36:32 - 00:36:34 | Speaker 1:

You know, that's a great question. I don't know. I don't know the answer to that.

00:36:35 - 00:36:37 | Speaker 2:

You didn't get L.A. vibes from him?

00:36:39 - 00:36:53 | Speaker 1:

I didn't get Portland vibes from him. You know what I mean? So I guess that leaves L.A. as the most likely other option. i hadn't really considered that much like where he was where he was you know where his origins were

00:36:53 - 00:37:16 | Speaker 2:

you mentioned a tattoo did you say like some sort of a tribal tattoo yeah i could see him being in the surf surf culture maybe is he like could he be on surf culture but as an idea not as a practice right right right yeah like like the idea of surfing right yeah i thought i had more follow-ups for you but i um maybe we'll just have to leave it there but okay that's fine that's i've said

00:37:16 - 00:37:22 | Speaker 1:

enough, and I really want to talk about this Otani thing, so how don't we thank some dazzling donors and then we do that. Look, you just woke

00:37:22 - 00:37:23 | Speaker 2:

me up.

00:37:24 - 00:37:30 | Speaker 1:

That was my impression of the ding that happens on the airplane

00:37:30 - 00:37:46 | Speaker 3:

when they turn the light. I know what it was. I know what it was. We was hoping for some razzle dazzle. Razzle dazzle. That's right, man. Razzle dazzle. On your mark. On your mark. Get set. Get set. Now ready. Ready. Go. Everybody razzle dazzle.

00:37:46 - 00:38:04 | Speaker 1:

Hey, let's thank some dazzling donors. These are the super special, super generous people that are super serving the P1s that are me and Andrew and John. Because we like working here. And we can only do it because of folks like Travis Spokes, who's in White Plains, New York.

00:38:07 - 00:38:08 | Speaker 2:

Is that upstate, Luke?

00:38:09 - 00:38:49 | Speaker 1:

I believe so. I believe so. I don't know if I've even ever been to White Plains. I bet you John knows where it is. he being a new yorker yep i'm sure of it uh travis says hey friendos just wanted to congratulate you all on your first year of tbtl independence it's a great accomplishment and i'm thankful for the community's support in keeping the show going well travis we are we are uh grateful for your support of this whole thing i'd like to use my dazzling donor message to plug my favorite sport curling it's a sport that anyone at any age can play and it's filled with great people at clubs across the country including seattle and portland of course the granite curling club i believe is in

00:38:49 - 00:38:56 | Speaker 2:

seattle right yes it is not too far from that's up north here right where i live yeah i've yeah

00:38:56 - 00:39:26 | Speaker 1:

it's it's uh it's by the sprouts it's by ingram high school i believe is that 130th or 130th i think or is it 135th i think it's 130th yeah um and uh that's a pretty famous curling club i could see you getting into curling andrew it seems like it has a lot of the things that you like beer drinking it's active but it's not overly active although I'll tell you I've watched some curling and those little professionals that they're it's hardcore that sweeping of the ice

00:39:26 - 00:40:00 | Speaker 2:

and everything yeah yeah I don't even know if I am athletic enough for it no joke you saying that saying that it's active but not too active actually reminds me of an expression that Genevieve and I say to each other quite a bit it's a quote from me from I believe it was the first time we were in Palm Springs speaking of Palm Springs and it was one of the we had a really nice hotel and a nice pool we had a great day but the evening it was it was tough for us to find the right vibe in the evening we'd gone to a couple of places that ended up getting very crowded and then there was sort of a club scene going on I don't know if you know this about me Luke I'm not much

00:40:00 - 00:40:27 | Speaker 1:

of a club scenester um and then and then you know but it's not like a dive bar scene obviously anyway we finally found some place and we sat down and we're just kind of chatting as quiet enough for my old man ears to hear Genevieve or whatever and we're talking and I said something like yeah you know it's just like the the fun places were just like too fun and that has now become sort of the the Andrew Walsh slogan or or motto of our nightlife well the fun places are too

00:40:27 - 00:40:37 | Speaker 2:

fun is this the same trip where you did find what you thought was the perfect bar and then realized that they had hillary clinton's face on the urinal cakes you know that's that's why i think this the

00:40:37 - 00:41:16 | Speaker 1:

story i just told was the first time we were there and the story that you're referencing was the second time we were there we did we found a dive bar and we even i'm trying to think do we go back to it do we go there twice and it took me a while and i'm embarrassed to say this to sort of slowly look around and realize oh my god this is like a blue lives matter hillary clinton in the urinal like just like pwning the libs bar like if that's the that and sort of uh country vibe was the theme of this bar on the outskirts of the strip and in palm springs and uh it was a real disappointment so genevieve and i uh put 911 as a joke by public enemy on the jukebox three times in a row and

00:41:16 - 00:41:45 | Speaker 2:

left before it started playing that's a savage burn and i love it so much travis says um hey for any tens in the new york metro area you can try curling at the ardsley curling club in west chester county you can find us online at ardsley curling.com we're open october through april hope to see you there good curling and power out so go if you're in new york state go say had a Travis at the Ardsley Curling Club.

00:41:46 - 00:42:09 | Speaker 1:

I feel like all the various Westchesters are just popping up this week. You're in a Westchester on the West Coast. We mentioned the Westchester down in Florida. I think I mentioned it in Miami. I think it's a neighborhood in Miami recently. I feel like Westchesters are just popping up all over the place. It's really an exciting time. It's a hot week for that. It really is. Say Maestro again.

00:42:10 - 00:42:10 | Speaker 2:

Maestro?

00:42:11 - 00:42:18 | Speaker 1:

On your mark. On your mark, get set, get set Now ready, ready, go Everybody rattle, dattle

00:42:18 - 00:42:27 | Speaker 2:

It's Andrew's long-lost sibling, Danielle Walsh One of the Dannys in Seattle, Washington

00:42:27 - 00:42:28 | Speaker 1:

Hi, Danielle

00:42:28 - 00:42:43 | Speaker 2:

Danny says, hey, Luke and Andrew, thanks for all you do You mean so much to all the tens And you've got this collective group Through so many trying times And thank you for bringing John into our lives We appreciate all of you I'm 80% certain John wrote that in, but that's fine.

00:42:44 - 00:43:09 | Speaker 1:

I was going to ask you, do you think, and this is going to be a little bit rude, I don't think John will hear this, so it's okay to say it. Should I start scrubbing these dazzling donor messages of the John references? I just sort of feel like we have a pretty good situation going right now as far as the balance of the three of us working together, and I'm just worried about inflated egos a little bit here, and I would like to prevent that by maybe cutting down on some of this praise for John.

00:43:10 - 00:43:42 | Speaker 2:

Yeah, I really see approval as a zero-sum game and more for John means less for me. And I don't like that feeling. So I would – and also at this point, we don't know what is accurate and what John has added to these messages. There's a lot of mention – there are a lot of mentions of him. There are a lot of like John's doing a great job. And I think the only safe approach is to just get rid of all John references just to make sure that he's not got his thumb on the scales, as it were.

00:43:43 - 00:43:50 | Speaker 1:

That's right. He's the first person to take a pass at these things. I don't even know that they were in there organically. So, okay, sounds like a plan. I'll work on that.

00:43:50 - 00:44:01 | Speaker 2:

Most of these people are made up. They're not even dazzling donors. They're just basically vehicles that John has invented to, you know, basically flex on us.

00:44:01 - 00:44:11 | Speaker 1:

If John is donating the dazzling donor amount for each one of these, i'm fine with that but otherwise i am decidedly not fine with that that would be a real can you

00:44:11 - 00:44:35 | Speaker 2:

imagine i mean that'd be some real otani interpreter shit john is john is to the tune of many thousands of dollars a year supporting tbtl because he doesn't want to tell us that we don't have any real donors but then he's also using the dazzling donor messages to kind of pump himself up that would be incredible that would be a real plot twist but for some reason

00:44:35 - 00:44:42 | Speaker 1:

And I was going to say Mike Judge. That's not the baseball player. Who's the Yankee judge? Aaron Judge? Aaron Judge.

00:44:43 - 00:44:46 | Speaker 2:

What can't Beavis and Butthead creator Mike Judge do?

00:44:46 - 00:45:29 | Speaker 1:

I was going to make a joke about Aaron Judge is actually the one wiring the money as a prelude to the Otani story. But I really messed that up when I got into some Beavis and Butthead King of the Hill territory. My apologies, Aaron. uh danielle says could i ask that my donor message uh this year be a music for your weekend you can danny and you just did i'd love for you to play meant to be from wilco's newest album cousin it's super fun and definitely the kind of energy we need in the world right now to my fellow tens keep taking care of each other and don't forget to vote and listen to more wilco andrew i didn't know wilco has a new record out me neither although i sort of feel i don't follow

00:45:29 - 00:45:38 | Speaker 2:

them that closely i sort of feel like they always have a new record out which is i mean that sounds like that sounds like a complaint it's not like that's good for them like it's good stuff i just

00:45:38 - 00:46:55 | Speaker 1:

i don't keep up with them enough i am just so excited about this uh because we've we've somehow tricked danny into donating money to the show also suggesting a song which means i don't have to comb through the emails and find one and it's the band that i love probably the most in the world wilco everything's coming up millhouse on this friday edition of the show um you know i was the i'm actually going to change my music for your weekend suggestion i was going to suggest a waxahatchie song um but i'm actually going to swerve on that just because i've been there was something else i wanted to play and i've played a lot of waxahatchie um on the show lately but i was watching i just happen to be seeing a video of one of her new songs and you know who is drumming for her in the video spencer tweedy jeff tweedy's son is the drummer for waxahatchie at least in this one video and that's that's not unlike when you see a uh you know tim hardaway jr playing basketball and you remember tim hardaway being a golden state warrior and now tim hardaway in fact i believe tim hardaway jr has come and gone from the nba played a long successful career and has retired but that's that's part of the aging process now is this one of the kids that we would have seen

00:46:55 - 00:47:31 | Speaker 2:

um uh in those wilco videos during the pandemic because i didn't watch a lot of them but i do remember one where they were it was really sad they referred to um david burman of of the silver jews who had just passed away during that time very tragically and i remember one of the kids said oh isn't that i think i think maybe jeff tweede played a version of one of the songs off of the latest silver jews or purple mountains i guess record and um and one of the kids said oh that's uncle that's uncle david's song or something like that and i just remember that

00:47:31 - 00:47:57 | Speaker 1:

just even saying that breaks my heart yeah what a sad thing that was such a great band silver jews um and uh and not surprising that that he and uh and jeff tweede and wilco would all be kind of friends and collaborators because there's certainly some kind of dna running through that music um yes that i believe spencer tweedy was quite involved in that whole um whatever it was called the tweedy show or something um but yeah i was just in quite young

00:47:57 - 00:48:03 | Speaker 2:

right like sorry to interrupt i mean quite young not that young oh okay okay i might be thinking

00:48:03 - 00:49:07 | Speaker 1:

of a different kid i just mean he's probably pushing 30 like i just oh i got i got irrationally excited about the fact that he was in Waxahachie and I don't know I've never even met him that I can remember but it made me yeah it made me excited so um Danielle thank you for the recommendation we will play that music for your weekend at the end of the show and thanks also to Travis for supporting TBTL hello and welcome to top story all right let's talk Dodgers baseball andrew the thing that most people tune into tbtl to hear about um we got two things going on here um one is that they because the the dodgers kicked off the season against the padres in seoul south korea and um it was obviously nationally televised and a lot of um you know attention and scrutiny on the game and one of the things they caught was one of the owners of the dodgers who's sitting like right behind the dugout on video i'm gonna say kind of picking his nose

00:49:07 - 00:51:15 | Speaker 2:

and eating it did you see the video yet i did i saw the one that i believe was the original one that went viral somebody put it on x somebody tweeted it um somebody truth did on x there are just certain things i hate saying like x and climate pledge arena um but anyway um it was Somebody who actually just held their phone up to the TV. Is this the same one that you saw? And you can hear the person talking as they're taking their TV, probably, you know, rewinding a little bit on however they recorded it and then replaying and saying, like, caught this dude picking his nose. I don't even think the person who originally posted it realized that it was an owner. I think he just caught somebody picking his nose. But it's a weird move. It's not like it doesn't look like. And I have some strong feelings. about this Luke it doesn't look like he's going hunting for something that's why I that's why I hesitate to use the word um picking his nose it felt more like he has an unfortunate sort of um almost he was caught doing an unfortunate sort of tick sort of in a moment I believe the Dodgers were losing at the moment so there might have been a little bit of like you know anxiety there as both a fan and an owner and you're in uh South Korea or whatever and so he's kind of got his hands claps together and then he almost like he takes his two four fingers and almost makes like a little steeple with them if you remember that old kids game and then sort of inserts both of them up into his nose he kind of forgets that he people can see him and that he might be on camera because he's behind home plate and he sort of just like inserts them very momentarily up into his nostrils then the weird thing is and then he takes them out and again it doesn't look like he's doing any business up there it just sort of looks like he's not thinking about what he's doing he kind of pushes them up there then takes them out and then puts them both in his mouth still sort of in steeple form if i remember correctly and again doesn't like dine on them just puts them in his mouth and then pulls them back out he doesn't even it's not even like he's he's sucking barbecue sauce off of them or something it's just sort of looks like he's just kind of nervous and fidgety

00:51:15 - 00:52:26 | Speaker 1:

but it's an unfortunate look you're a gross person yes if he didn't if he didn't put the fingers in the mouth i don't think we'd even be talking about this because it's not really a full-on nose pick it's something else it's almost like sometimes people will do that thing where you kind of put two fingers against your nostrils and blow to kind of like press your eardrums out like this yes yes kind of a move yes it's it's it's not you're right he's not it's it's it's not um a a purpose-driven exploration of his nostrils right it's like he's just kind of fidgeting but then what's weird is it goes from this fidget which we wouldn't really care about to he's putting his hands in his mouth his fingers in his mouth and then it's like are we just seeing an abbreviated version of something like if he was home sitting in his TV room watching television is he really going for it did we see like the tip of the iceberg that is this guy being gross what he actually did on camera isn't that big of a deal but it indicates that he's not somebody who's grossed out by the idea of his fingers being both in his nose and then in his mouth in very, very close kind of succession. Yeah. You know, there's

00:52:26 - 00:53:23 | Speaker 2:

something funny about me that I'm just realizing right now, but I feel like I am somebody who's looking, I'm, I'm really trying to get to the truth when it comes to accusations about nose picking. And I don't know why, because I don't think of all of my things, nose picking is not one of them um i do like as you notice probably as we do this show i end up like kind of i always have a box of tissues nearby and i'm kind of constantly blowing my nose and my eyes kind of get watery but that's usually because i'm laughing and i don't know why it's not the most attractive thing in the world but at least it's it's the byproduct of something good like you can tell it's a good show if i've gone through a lot of tissues which is a weird thing to say obviously yeah but it's also got me thinking about you know later today i'm heading to um kow to do that uh week in review which we talked about on wednesday pretty nervous about and i that's another thing i'm sort of nervous about is what is my tissue situation like is it weird if i just take a box of tissues with me or do i have to take little packs of tissues because i'll tell you what it's

00:53:23 - 00:53:28 | Speaker 1:

really distracting if you have a yeah then you ask about the tissues in front of everyone hey

00:53:28 - 00:54:30 | Speaker 2:

does anybody have a box of tissues no no i know that i need to bring my own tissues and lotion what if i set up i sit down and then i just put a thing of like i put i put a fig of a shea butter down a big box of tissues what else can i like just bring all of the creature comforts here at home anyway um uh anyway i when i first saw this video and i'm pretty sure your show sheet was the first thing that tipped me to it yesterday that this was something that was going viral um i clicked on the link and then I enhanced and I enhanced and I enhanced. I really wanted to make sure that those fingies were in the nostrils because at first I was like, those might just be on the outside of his nose, sort of like nervously pinching his nose. I mean, that's something I as a glasses wearer might do every now and then. You know the move you take off your glasses and then you pinch the bridge of your nose. That's socially acceptable. So I was looking for an out for this guy, but I do think I have to, I think there was, and I'm afraid to say that there was penetration.

00:54:30 - 00:56:52 | Speaker 1:

um the other big dodgers story is related to the uh interpreter for the player shohei otani who has been fired by the team and accused of theft of what is presumably millions of dollars from shohei otani the player to pay off illegal gambling debts and this whole story surfaced because there was some sort of bust. California, interestingly enough, is one of the few states that still doesn't allow sports betting, legal sports betting. And so this person who's like a bookie got busted and I guess they were going through his Rolodex. And here's where I think the story gets really interesting. The first that I saw of this, it was like on ESPN, you know, as I'm walking through the airport or something. And it's like Otani interpreter fired for theft over gambling. And I thought, wow, that's a crazy story. I wonder how that happened. And then as I started to investigate the story a little bit further, I realized that, in fact, the first version of events was the interpreter explaining to the team that he had gotten into a gambling situation and then explaining to the media that Shohei Otani had actually paid this guy's gambling debts. even though he was unhappy about it he had he had covered the guy's note because he basically was a friend and for Shohei Ohtani four million dollars is actually not that much money and so the first version of the story and this is why I think the whole thing is very curious the first version of the story was you're gonna see some wire transfers from Shohei Ohtani to this bookie but it's because he was paying the debt of his interpreter who had gotten into some gambling trouble and then the next day Shohei Ohtani's legal team says he's the victim of a massive theft and the whole story has changed to be Shohei Ohtani had to know knowledge of this he did not pay this money voluntarily it was stolen from him somehow and I think that whole thing is very very suspicious like it is a the fact that the story has changed is to me notable

00:56:52 - 00:58:18 | Speaker 2:

oh definitely so I read a um a timeline about so I believe the story originally was broken by the LA Times um and then ESPN did a um deep dive on it and then I sort of read like I can't remember the outlet I think it was Yahoo Sports did like a um a really good I really appreciate this like kind of a breakdown of the timeline using those two sources and um and it seems sort of and so I'm putting stock in the truth of this and so it's exactly as you said at first like um because they found Shohei's information in this in this bookies you know after they busted this bookie um they sort of started with them by putting just the interpreter in front of cameras um on ESPN to say yeah I have a gambling problem and Shohei offered to pay it for me that's why it is now public record that there were two wire transfers of I think 500,000 a piece and I don't know how we end up getting up to the 4.5 million but essentially but those wire transfers literally have Shohei's name on them like they are specifically from him it's not like it's not like Shohei Otani said oh man you really screwed up you're a good friend of mine and I believe that They're really good friends. I'm going to get you out of this gambling trouble by giving you the money and then you can pay the bookie off. Shohei paid the bookie directly, which that seems a little bit weird.

00:58:19 - 00:58:22 | Speaker 1:

The interpreter seems like something you might do if you had a bookie.

00:58:23 - 00:59:58 | Speaker 2:

Well, honestly, well, there's one argument. Well, hold on. Let me let me come back around to that, because originally when asked about that, the interpreter said, yeah, well, he didn't trust me with the money because he thought I would just gamble it away if he just gave me that much money. So he wanted to transfer it himself to the bookie. That could sound sketchy. I understand that. But at least that's the that's the kind of that's the story coming from the interpreter. Other people have sort of said if it was Otani actually gambling, he would know that that would get him in so much trouble. Of course, he wouldn't put his own name to it. It's almost like the fact that Otani was putting his name to it in the first place sort of speaks to a kind of innocence, a naivete and innocence. And apparently, and again, according to the timeline, and we'll see how this all comes out, I find it really, really fascinating. But whether or not it was Otani who was doing the gambling, according to the state law in California, one is not allowed to wire any amount of money to cover gambling debts, whether it's your own or not. I didn't know that. So in other words, that was, again, kind of in this piece. So it sort of seems like let's just go with the most Pollyanna-ish version of this. it sort of seems like right now. And again, I could be wrong. I'm not trying to defend Shohei. I would be surprised, given everything we know about him and his success and his focus, that he's also a huge gambler on the side. But maybe that's just like, I don't know. Maybe I don't know what gamblers are like. And so maybe that's just the case. Maybe that's like the soft bigotry of high expectations for me. I don't know. But anyway, putting all of that aside.

00:59:58 - 01:00:01 | Speaker 1:

The soft bigotry of being a 1%. Once in a generation two-way player.

01:00:02 - 01:01:14 | Speaker 2:

Yes, who also, though, is $4.5 million in gambling debt. Like, it just doesn't seem that doesn't match up with the player that we think we know. But who knows? But anyway, it does sort of seem that the storyline right now, at least as it's being presented, is they realize there's a PR situation. So Otani's camp, we'll just generically call it that, lets the interpreter go on ESPN and say, yes, this was me. I have a gambling problem Shohei didn't trust me with the money to pay off the debts but he's one of my best friends so he said I will pay this off for you I will transfer the money directly but then the again Otani's camp learns that well either way wiring money to cover gambling debts is against the law we cannot have it public knowledge or we cannot admit to him breaking that law whether or not it was him placing the bets or not that's irrelevant so we need to now It went from being kind of a PR people situation to a legal people situation. And it sort of sounds like the lawyer is like, no, no, no, no, no, no. We're stepping away from that story. We don't know what the interpreter is talking about. Shohei has never wired any money illegally. So I don't know. That's where I am. That's where I am on this right now.

01:01:14 - 01:01:39 | Speaker 1:

It just seems funny to me that they think they can they think that that's going to work because it is a very big difference between, you know, giving somebody money, giving somebody a bunch of money to pay off their debts or whatever, and having it stolen from you. And I think you very much know the difference if you're Shohei Ohtani. Like, one of these stories is not true. And my guess is it's the second story is the not true one.

01:01:39 - 01:02:18 | Speaker 2:

Yeah, no, I'm with you. I mean, I think it's pretty clear that they realize, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. Even if we're saying he didn't do any gambling himself, we're still out here essentially saying that he committed a crime, which was wiring money for gambling debt. Now, my question for you is, do you think it is more likely that he actually has been gambling and that Otani himself has racked up this debt and then they threw out the interpreter as sort of a foil or like a scapegoat sort of? Do you think that's a likelihood or do you think it's more likelihood that the truth is sort of closer to the original explanation that he was trying to help out his best friend and said too much?

01:02:18 - 01:02:59 | Speaker 1:

it feels to me like they're throwing the interpreter under the bus not that i mean well look i don't know otani and he certainly i'm with you he seems like a very put together person who would maybe not have this going on but that being said it's just too convenient that it's like oh here's why there's here's why when you found a bookie in california who had big payments coming from shohei otani here's why it isn't what it looked like and it's actually this other guy did it and he came to me and then I gave him money for this but I didn't want to give it to him so I gave it to the book it's just a lot of weird complicated explaining you know it violates every principle of

01:02:59 - 01:03:43 | Speaker 2:

Occam's razor in my opinion yeah you're right for anybody else and for anybody else I would say that so I don't know why I'm so convinced just based on the little I know about his personal or his public persona I should say that I can't picture him like having a huge addiction problem only because it sort of seems like god it would just be so weird that he has the focus on the field to go out there and pitch amazing games as he did before he got injured and then also you know just be the best player in baseball in over a hundred years and have the focus to do that all the while living a life of of gambling but i mean they and apparently terrible gambling decisions if you you know if you went 4.5 million in the hole but um maybe that's just naivete at my for you know

01:03:43 - 01:05:29 | Speaker 1:

on my part well the other thing is he might not have a gambling problem when you think about how much money he has yeah that's like you know his losing four and a half million dollars if it was him or whatever amount of that he might have lost is maybe that's similar to you pulling some tabs at goldie's you know and and it's one of those things where it's just like he and and the other thing that they i think have been super uh insistent upon is that none of the bets were on baseball they're very big on like it was on soccer and it was other sports and like it could be the case that Otani just likes to kind of like you know watch a game in his mansion and also put some money on it for fun and he was he just didn't think it was going to be a big deal again it just none of this squares with my thought like what I think about Otani just seems again like a very very with it guy but it could be the case that he just was being kind of dumb and doing this thing that made these games more fun for him and then somebody realized oh no man that's well again he was doing it with if he if he was the one doing it it's with a bookie he's not doing it at draft kings yeah and if not for this investigation it could have been something that never came to light and it's possible that he was like yeah whatever i throw a few bucks on a tennis match it's fun to watch i got a guy and no one expected the guy to Thank you.

01:05:00 - 01:05:11 | Speaker 2:

get busted and now they're doing this crazy thing to try to like explain away why this guy was getting money from Shohei Ohtani when the most likely the simplest explanation is yeah Shohei

01:05:11 - 01:07:09 | Speaker 1:

Ohtani was throwing some money down on games now whatever the situation is or maybe I can't say whatever the situation is because it really depends on what actually comes to light but what What I'm super interested in seeing is how Major League Baseball handles this. I happen to hear a little bit of folks talking about this on the radio this morning. You know, just not experts, just, you know, local host throwing it around. They're like, what is the chance that the league suspends him? Like, he's the face of the league, a league that is, you know, at least claims to be having a lot of troubles attracting fans and, like, is trying to rebuild itself as something that young people can be interested in by putting ghost runners on second base. and other incredibly smart moves no i mean it's just like so clear that this is an industry that has you know billions and billions of dollars and and billionaire owners around the country and they're doing everything they can to try to keep income steady and keep people interested in the game and they finally have this otani person who was languishing on an angels team that couldn't like really get the best out of him well they got the best out of him but a team that perennially lost he never made it to like the the World Series or anything finally it's their dream he's signed by you know the Dodgers and finally this can truly be the year of Otani and he's batting second behind like Mookie Betts and who follows I mean it's just like it is like the Dodgers are just and this is where my feelings are kind of like really mixed on this whole thing is I do not care one iota if the if this totally explodes on the dodgers and he can't play this season in a certain way i'm sorry holly woo mike and all of our diehard dodgers fans i really should be more polite about this but like i would sort of get a kick out of that as not a huge fan of the dodgers having said that he's also a keystone on my fantasy team so obviously i have some ambivalence

01:07:09 - 01:07:11 | Speaker 2:

He's one of the Akron groomsmen.

01:07:11 - 01:07:35 | Speaker 1:

Exactly. He is the key Akron groomsman. So anyway, though, to pull my opinionating out of this for a second, what do you think the league does? I mean, I don't think the league wants this stank. I mean, I know the league doesn't want this stank, and they want this to seem as far away from him as possible. And does he actually ever face any suspension? Or what do they have to prove to get that guy off the field?

01:07:35 - 01:09:12 | Speaker 2:

Well, I think that MLB is going to do everything in their power to throw the interpreter under the bus. I think they might have been the ones that called Otani's lawyers and were like, like, I think that Major League Baseball is going to be dragged kicking and screaming to the decision of suspending Otani. Like, that's the last thing they want. And I think first they're going to be like, it was the interpreter. and then if it comes to light that Otani was more culpable for this I think they're going to try to like they're going to try to figure out all these different ways to not suspend him and then the public outcry is going to become so great that they're going to have to suspend him but I think they're only going to do it under massive like public pressure about you know double standards and Pete Rose and gambling and sports and like they are going to try everything they can to low-key this to minimize it to put it on someone who's not otani that's my opinion because yeah they have so i mean he's he is once in a generation doesn't even describe his talent like once in a the existence of the sport practically i mean other than like babe ruth or something like just no one has ever ever been as good as he is at hitting and pitching i mean it's remarkable plus you have this whole huge i mean you think the nation of japan isn't following everything that otani does like that's a giant market probably for the mlb so it's just like i mean this is the like this is other than him you know having some legal trouble involving like assaulting someone or something this is really bad for baseball and they i'm sure are freaking

01:09:12 - 01:09:18 | Speaker 1:

the frick out right now yeah exactly and it couldn't happen to richer people that's right

01:09:18 - 01:09:25 | Speaker 2:

it couldn't happen to a richer nose picker bad week for that dude

01:09:25 - 01:09:39 | Speaker 1:

the nose picking is so far down the list of issues do you think that he actually cooked this up to distract from his nose picking and eating it's called wagging the booger look into

01:09:39 - 01:09:51 | Speaker 2:

it all right how about a little music for your weekend um it's going to be i think uh what What's the weather going to be like in Seattle? It's gotten rainy up there, right?

01:09:51 - 01:09:59 | Speaker 1:

You know, yeah, it's gotten a little bit chilly and rainy. Last weekend was just, I mean, the best weather you could possibly ask for, in my opinion, especially.

01:10:00 - 01:11:37 | Speaker 3:

this time of year um i think it's getting a bit cooler again and i think it's going to remain cooler and maybe cloudier throughout the weekend um i'm not exactly sure but either way i still have a little spring in my step i'm excited for um the the season change as you mentioned or as i mentioned on yesterday's show it's officially spring now which is exciting um i'm going to play a song for you here luke um by an artist i mentioned a couple of weeks ago i mentioned that this artist is coming to play two shows in Seattle that they must have been they must have been sold out or something. So I went to buy tickets. It just kept saying, put yourself on a waiting list, which I never did. The artist is CMAT. That's C-M-A-T. And I think those are her initials of her full name, which I don't know off off the top of my head. But anyway, it's CMAT is the performer. And she's an Irish singer and musician who plays Americana, which is sort of an interesting way to come to the Americana and also like kind of a she's also a very very clever lyricist and has a I think like kind of a lot of humor in her outlook and in her music but not in a in a hokey way I'm a really big fan my friend told me about C-Matt's first record if my wife knew I'd be dead which came out in 2022 and C-Matt has a brand new record out which I haven't really dipped into too much yet so I'm going to go back to the old record here and play the first song off and I'm going to play probably a little bit more than usual on this so We can get to the hook, Luke. The song is called Nashville, and I really love it. And I hope I saw some listeners were talking that they're going to the show this weekend. I think it's at the sunset. So have a great time for me, and take a listen to this, Nashville by CMAP.

01:11:37 - 01:12:59 | Speaker 2:

My hair's going high in heaven So long and softened in a bed I look and feel like I'm in a cold And that's all I ever wanted I feel a suitcase full of presents Things I'm leaving to my friends I'm going away and I can't decide Who would want my end Cause what I have to do Is not that nice, that really no fun I love little lies as much as you, but he's the big one I'm gonna tell everybody I know that I'm moving to Nashville I'll get all my goodbyes where you're out of the way I'll make a memory of arms Chipping me off in Nashville

01:12:59 - 01:13:12 | Speaker 1:

But I'm not going There's no way I can stay I'm tired of looking

01:13:12 - 01:13:26 | Speaker 3:

There you go, CMAT. Enjoy the show, everybody who's going. So good. Yeah, I couldn't remember if I played that for you before. I really think you'd like this record. And again, I assume the second one as well. I just haven't heard it yet, but please check it out. Maybe it's some good airplane music for you.

01:13:27 - 01:13:53 | Speaker 4:

Absolutely. No, I'm going to be checking that out. I'm digging it. I would like to actually, Omaha, Omaha, pull a little audible. And instead of playing the Waxahachie song, could we play a song? I want to give also a disclaimer. I think there might be some kind of innuendo or some adult themes in this song because the song is called Wet Dream, and it's by the band Wet Leg.

01:13:53 - 01:13:57 | Speaker 3:

Oh, yeah. If it's by Wet Leg, it's definitely got innuendo in there.

01:13:58 - 01:14:03 | Speaker 4:

Have you played this song on the show? You've played Wet Leg on the show before, right?

01:14:03 - 01:14:18 | Speaker 3:

I think I'm familiar with this record a little bit. Certainly Chase Lounge, which was their really big hit, I think was on the same record, and I think a listener sent that in. But, yeah, so I'm familiar with these guys.

01:14:18 - 01:14:42 | Speaker 4:

they're very uh yeah they're very suggestive very catchy very suggestive so just like if you've got little kids in the car and you don't think they're ready to consider the idea of a nocturnal emission this might be a good time to uh to wind up your your time with the show this week but um i heard this i was at becca's house and i was like i shazammed it i was like i don't know what this is but it is damned catchy so can we hear a little wet leg wet dream

01:14:42 - 01:15:02 | Speaker 1:

01:15:47 - 01:15:59 | Speaker 4:

All right, that's probably enough of the song. I just love that line, I've got Buffalo 66 on DVD, because there was probably a period of my life where I had Buffalo 66 on DVD.

01:16:00 - 01:16:05 | Speaker 3:

And that's also, that's that movie that also has a very explicit sex scene in it, right, as well?

01:16:05 - 01:16:07 | Speaker 4:

I think that's the Brown Bunny, right?

01:16:07 - 01:16:08 | Speaker 3:

Oh, yes, Buffalo 66.

01:16:08 - 01:16:10 | Speaker 4:

The other Vincent Gallo movie.

01:16:10 - 01:16:16 | Speaker 3:

Oh, okay, they're both Vincent Gallo, that's why, I was trying to think, why did I confuse them? That's exactly right, Vincent Gallo vehicles.

01:16:17 - 01:16:20 | Speaker 4:

Who is now, I believe, like a MAGA guy, which is like, oh, God.

01:16:20 - 01:16:48 | Speaker 3:

Oh, really? Yes, unfortunately. One of those guys who was like so left, there was some musician that I liked who was always like a weird outsider musician who also ended up having a hotel room in D.C. around the January 6th thing. I'm trying to remember who. It was somebody that I liked and Addy liked. Ariel Pink. Ariel, it was the person who I, it was the person who was in the hotel room with Ariel Pink who had this song, I think it was Touchdown or Football or something. It was very kind of electronic. Oh, sure.

01:16:49 - 01:16:50 | Speaker 4:

John.

01:16:50 - 01:17:06 | Speaker 3:

Yes. Mouse? No. John Moss. Moss or something Yeah exactly He was one too It was kind of like I stopped listening to his music Because it was like Oh these guys are so They're so outsider That they started to find I guess brethren In that They're sort of like

01:17:06 - 01:17:16 | Speaker 4:

That Red Scare podcast Which is like So hip And so Kind of ultra Lefty That it's actually Kind of Come all the way around Into being Like Kind of right wing
