Hey, Luke and Andrew, it's Sherilyn Corvallis. We have a little song that we sing for Mr. Tito, the parrotlet. This is to the tune of Kiss the Girl from The Little Mermaid.

00:00:12 - 00:00:30 | Speaker 3:

Sha-la-la-la-la-la, don't be shy. My, oh, my, you've got to kiss the bird, oh, yeah. Sha-la-la-la-la-la, don't be sad. You know it ain't that bad when you're a Tito bird.

00:00:31 - 00:00:48 | Speaker 4:

And, of course, we love to count how many times he tries to say his name, Tito, during the song, but he only says T. So we just count how many times he says T while we sing it. All right, you guys, take it easy. Power out. TVTL.

00:00:48 - 00:01:26 | Speaker 2:

Another day, another victory for the OGs Listening to the pet songs, the pet lovers amongst us Hi everyone, welcome to a Thursday edition of TBTL This is the show that just might be too beautiful to live My name is Luke Burbank, I am your host Special week of programming as we bring you TBTL Pet Sounds It's our pet song tournament And right over there is the Dick Vitale of this operation, Mr. Andrew Walsh, the longest-running Cobra of the show. Good morning, my friend. Good morning.

00:01:26 - 00:01:30 | Speaker 1:

Was that the most teet talk we've had on the show, at least in recent years?

00:01:30 - 00:01:34 | Speaker 2:

I mean, since you asked me to stop doing that so much, yes.

00:01:34 - 00:01:44 | Speaker 1:

Yes, exactly. Tito, we met that bird. The FCC that asked you to stop doing that. We did meet Tito, indeed, down there in Corvallis when we were doing shows out of Cheryl's driveway.

00:01:45 - 00:01:51 | Speaker 2:

I'm trying to remember if we also got the backstory on how Tito got his name.

00:01:52 - 00:01:56 | Speaker 1:

If so, I am afraid I don't recall. And that doesn't either.

00:01:56 - 00:02:15 | Speaker 2:

I'm trying to think of. I mean, let's see. There was wasn't there the wasn't there a European strongman named Tito? I didn't know that. I know there is a vodka called Tito's. Oh, maybe for the vodka. Joseph Brose Tito, commonly known as Tito, was a Yugoslav communist revolutionary and politician. I wonder if that's who the bird is named for.

00:02:15 - 00:02:21 | Speaker 1:

Honestly, deep cut, Cheryl. Great pull. Interesting backstory. Interesting backstory indeed. You're well read.

00:02:21 - 00:02:24 | Speaker 2:

Either the vodka or the Yugoslavian strongman. Yes.

00:02:25 - 00:02:29 | Speaker 1:

The fact that she has another bird named Absolute makes me think it might be the strongman.

00:02:29 - 00:03:26 | Speaker 2:

Okay, now that actually, that's a hint. You know, that's a context clue. Here's what we're doing this week. We are recording some special shows where we are playing lots of the songs that our listeners sing for their pets. Because at some point a while ago, Andrew, you played, I believe it was one song that one listener was singing for one pet. And it really, it sort of really connected with a lot of the other listeners who do this, as you and I both do with our pets. and people just started calling in and leaving messages and we said, this is gold. Like Rod Blagojevich, we said, this is freaking gold. Do you think we're going to give this up for, you know, for nothing? No, we're going to turn it into a week of content and here we are. Now, the week of content has actually expanded in a certain way. Would you like to explain the last-minute adjustment to the bracket system that we are applying as of this Thursday episode?

00:03:26 - 00:04:12 | Speaker 1:

Well, I'll answer your question as honestly as possible. Well, no, I wouldn't like to explain. I will explain, but it doesn't exactly shower me in glory, Luke. I made a mistake. I made an accounting error. This is as bad as it gets, essentially, when it comes to these contests. I mean, I would say this is only second to the time they announced La La Land as the best picture winner at the Oscars. And just slightly above the time Steve Harvey crowned the wrong woman Miss USA or Miss USA? Something or other. Mrs. USA? I don't know. Madam Librarian USA? I can't remember exactly what that contest is. But I think I'm right about that. I believe that Steve Harvey did do that. Well, I'm the Steve Harvey now. Is that one on Steve Harvey?

00:04:13 - 00:04:37 | Speaker 2:

Because I don't feel like, listen, I don't want to show my allegiance between, like I'm fine with both Jimmy Kimmel and Steve Harvey, although I'll be honest, I think Jimmy Kimmel's vibe on that show is more my vibe. My sense of the Kimmel thing is somebody just handed out the wrong card, right? Price, Waterhouse, Cooper. Yeah, that was not on Kimmel. Did that also happen to Steve Harvey, or did he just, like, did he get... Was that... We need to just keep talking.

00:04:38 - 00:05:00 | Speaker 1:

That I do not know, but I want to tell you how confused and intrigued and then eventually let down I was because I did not remember that Kimmel was the one who was hosting the Oscars when that La La Land mistake happened. and I think it went to Moonlight, right? I should be calling it the Moonlight mistake, not the La La Land. Thank you. But it went to Moonlight.

00:05:00 - 00:05:02 | Speaker 2:

Should have gone to Moonlight, but it was announced La La La.

00:05:02 - 00:05:40 | Speaker 1:

Yeah, and it did, you know, and Moonlight did, of course, get it in the, you know, officially as the winner. And that movie is so good. I rewatched that, I think, last year. It was even better the second time around. But having said that, I had forgotten that Kimmel was hosting and I did not understand why you were pitting Steve Harvey against Kimmel. And I thought maybe there was like a brewing beef between the two of these, you know, entertainers. and what a beef that would be. I wouldn't know which side to take, honestly. I hear some rough things about Steve Harvey, maybe about the way he, you heard some of those rumors, right? That he's a little rough to work with. Remember?

00:05:40 - 00:05:45 | Speaker 2:

Oh, didn't he have a, supposedly there was a memo about not making eye contact or something?

00:05:45 - 00:05:49 | Speaker 1:

Something like, just do not bother him when he's on set. Blah, blah, blah.

00:05:50 - 00:08:10 | Speaker 2:

Well, you know what? There is a little bit, I don't know how Steve Harvey's taking this, but I am now, Andrew, I'm the go-to source for La La Land slash Moonlight Oscar mix-ups, and if I remember right, I have the audio here If I remember right, I believe that Jimmy Kimmel said I blame Steve Harvey Oh, because Steve Harvey had already This happened after the Miss Universe thing, let's just listen for a moment Oh, who's Miss Universe? And the Academy Award for best picture you're awesome come on La La Land oh you know what I'm sorry this is my terrible naming on these files that's not the one that I have something called full Oscars mess up it's 7 minutes and 41 seconds Should we just play the whole thing? Here's Kimmel. I'm sorry. No, there's a mistake. Okay, well, that's a clip called There's a Mistake, Oscar. There is a point, I promise, where Jimmy Kimmel quipped, I blame Steve Harvey. Yeah, you're right. Now, I wonder how Steve Harvey took that because I'm also, and I can do this, Andrew, because I'm working multiple screens here. I also have Steve Harvey, by way of USA Today, by way of Kevin Hart's Comedy Gold Mines podcast, interviewing Steve Harvey about the Miss Universe blunder. And here was Steve Harvey's take on it. It was a painful, bleeping night there, dog. Oh, God, I didn't know the pain I was in. I didn't know how bad the mistake was, Harvey said. According to Harvey, the mistake wasn't really his fault. The Family Feud host said when they ran through the show at rehearsal, they would only read two names. the second runner-up, and Miss Universe. Harvey said a last-minute change to read three names on stage the night of the show created the chaos. So it sounds like also Steve Harvey was kind of, you know, sort of not set up for success in the way that the Oscars folks weren't either. But if I was Steve Harvey and I had had this embarrassing gaffe and then Jimmy Kimmel is in the midst of— and I don't think—Kimmel was not the one who announced the wrong movie.

00:08:10 - 00:08:23 | Speaker 1:

it was whoever was taking so much time well that's rich coming from you i was going to say while we're listening to it that drum roll was second to only tbtl's drum roll no but when i do

00:08:23 - 00:08:28 | Speaker 2:

it it's funny oh i see yeah when they do it it's wasting america's time sure yeah yeah yeah i

00:08:28 - 00:08:54 | Speaker 1:

recognize hard-earned time i don't know this for sure but i think i recognized you know that i consider a superpower of mine to be identifying voices and i'm pretty sure but my the hitch in the superpowers i can never remember people's names yeah i feel like i got 50 of the superpower i feel like that's why i need to be like the wonder twins or something like that well i have a mediocre twins i can tell you who it is once you okay yeah it's i'm not gonna i'm not gonna

00:08:54 - 00:08:58 | Speaker 2:

tell you i'm but i'm gonna i'm gonna i'm gonna verify if you've got the right answer i i feel

00:08:58 - 00:09:10 | Speaker 1:

like the woman's voice that i heard there is america's favorite actress who was in like um like literally everything um is it america's favorite actress who is in literally everything

00:09:10 - 00:09:55 | Speaker 2:

is it america's favorite actress who's in literally everything no it is not rebel wilson it is not rebel wilson solid guess i am uh blanking um on and i she i'll i'll give you a hint okay no closer to revealing to the listeners what we've screwed up about this contest but This is fun, nonetheless. I believe that she was famously in a coffee commercial where she was so truculent and unlikable. This is at the height of her fame. She's an older actor. And somebody released, I think, the kind of raw footage of the coffee commercial. And then Maya Rudolph basically played a version of her in an SNL sketch where she was in a coffee commercial and being similarly difficult. Does that help you at all?

00:09:55 - 00:10:18 | Speaker 1:

It eliminates who I was thinking of because I'm thinking of who I'm thinking of is like royalty in American acting and it's just driving me bananas that I can't think of her name because she's literally like... Julia Roberts. No, a blonde, probably maybe slightly older than Julia... Meryl Streep. Meryl Streep. I thought I heard Meryl Streep's voice. How could I not even not think of her name? I couldn't think of one goddamn movie that Meryl Streep was in.

00:10:18 - 00:10:25 | Speaker 2:

Oh, Death Becomes Her. Death Becomes Her. Literally, oh no, A Cry in the Dark where a dingo ate her baby.

00:10:25 - 00:10:36 | Speaker 1:

Is that her? I didn't know that was her. Death Becomes Her I like That's a pretty good movie It's Faye Dunaway Oh really and Faye Dunaway Who I can't tell you a whole lot about

00:10:36 - 00:10:46 | Speaker 2:

Oh man dude the Faye What's even better The person who I'm mad at Is the guy who was mugging And I didn't recognize his voice It's Warren Beatty

00:10:46 - 00:10:50 | Speaker 1:

Oh now that you say that I remember that I did not recognize that

00:10:50 - 00:11:10 | Speaker 2:

Warren Beatty is taking his sweet time With the envelope And then I think Faye Dunaway is a bit probably jokingly peeved at him for like you know kind of taking his sweet time and then she grabs and then she reads the card and again it's really not either of their fault nor jimmy kimmel's uh because they were handed the wrong card by the people whose job it is to hand them the correct

00:11:10 - 00:11:35 | Speaker 1:

card yes now i know faye dunaway because i feel like well what god we're in chinatown maybe it's such a nice breaking point and but yeah thank you on that she was definitely in um chinatown and i feel like she was in a lot of Woody Allen movies was she married to Woody Allen uh now I'm blanking on that I don't know if she was married to him but I feel like I know her from Woody Allen movies too when I still watched Woody Allen movies what I'd really like to do if we weren't she was in Mommy

00:11:35 - 00:11:40 | Speaker 2:

Dearest she was in Network she was in Bonnie and Clyde oh yeah Bonnie and Clyde oh and along with

00:11:40 - 00:11:45 | Speaker 1:

what's his name her her co-presenter there who you just Warren Beatty that was probably weren't

00:11:45 - 00:12:18 | Speaker 2:

they both she was in something called in 2009 the seduction of Dr. Fugazi which you you met the drummer from fugazi don't bring it up it's a sore subject for him i were if we weren't doing one of these special shows we'd need to get to this special show i would love to play you um remind me at some other time in our life together andrew of making content to play you the the maya rudolph snl sketch and then the fade dunaway original one um as far as a maya rudolph pretending to be a fade dunaway type character being really really a hassle for the people

00:12:18 - 00:12:24 | Speaker 1:

trying to direct this coffee commercial. Okay, yeah. I don't remember that at all. So it was later in her career, huh?

00:12:25 - 00:12:57 | Speaker 2:

Yeah, I was unaware of that. I saw the SNL sketch, and I had no idea what it was a reference to. I just thought it was Maya. If I remember right, one of the things Maya Rudolph's character is doing is suffering through a lot of flatulence, but also while being very, very prim and proper and kind of annoyed with everyone for their lack of professionalism, although she's just absolutely just ripping ass the whole time, among other things. That may have even been something that the allegation against Faye Dunaway is that maybe that was happening on the shoot or something. Anyway.

00:12:57 - 00:13:06 | Speaker 1:

Anyway, by the way, Faye Dunaway was never married to Woody Allen. I think I was thinking of Diane Keaton, who also maybe was never married to him either, but that's who I was thinking of.

00:13:06 - 00:13:09 | Speaker 2:

Hannah and which one of her sisters? Who was married to Woody? All of the sisters. All of them.

00:13:09 - 00:13:10 | Speaker 1:

Hannah and her sisters, yeah.

00:13:12 - 00:13:19 | Speaker 2:

Okay, so back to our bad. we have more songs to play than we sort of had mathed out

00:13:19 - 00:13:33 | Speaker 1:

I literally never explained it yes exactly I had four extra songs kicking around that I was saving for Friday when Friday was supposed to be the show where we crown the finalist or the crown the winner

00:13:33 - 00:14:02 | Speaker 2:

this is so fortuitous though Andrew because as you know we have been in the crosshairs of various large media entities for use of content that we may or may not have the rights to. And, you know, the NCAA is famously testy with protecting their mark, as they say, protecting their trademark on various things. Like, for instance, I believe, is it CBS who has, is it my actual, my bosses at Skydance?

00:14:02 - 00:14:04 | Speaker 1:

Yeah, what do I work for Skydance now?

00:14:04 - 00:14:35 | Speaker 2:

Who own, I think CBS owns the words March Madness. I don't think you're allowed to call it March. Or maybe it's either the NCAA or CBS. Yes, somebody owns March Madness, and I'm sure somebody owns Final Four. And we were going to do a Final Four, but now we're going to do a Final Five. Sue me for what? But what do we call the Final Bracket, though? Well, we've been doing this regionally. We had West, we had East, we had South, and we're going to do North today. What about Middle?

00:14:36 - 00:14:46 | Speaker 1:

What about we could do Middle? Could Friday be Middle. Could we do Subterranean? Ian, could we do something that is, like, not a direction, you know, but, like, an up or a down time?

00:14:47 - 00:14:54 | Speaker 2:

Could we do a different dimension? Oh, I actually really like this. The brackets are west, east, south, north, time.

00:14:54 - 00:14:56 | Speaker 1:

And time.

00:14:58 - 00:15:00 | Speaker 2:

So, if we play your song on Friday.

00:15:00 - 00:15:01 | Speaker 1:

Friday, you're in the time bracket.

00:15:05 - 00:15:23 | Speaker 3:

Sorry. I've been drinking. No, I love that. I love that so much. Oh, God. I really want the... I don't want... I'm not putting my finger on any scales, but I really want the time bracket to win. I know you're rooting for the South because you feel like they don't get enough credit

00:15:23 - 00:15:30 | Speaker 1:

in most bracketology. Oh, I've given them... I mean, just by not making them go last, I feel like I've already done a lot. for that region.

00:15:31 - 00:15:36 | Speaker 2:

Well, time bracket will be tomorrow, but we'll go through the northern bracket. Yeah, exactly.

00:15:37 - 00:15:39 | Speaker 1:

We just heard Cheryl and Corvallis.

00:15:39 - 00:15:44 | Speaker 2:

That was great. That was really good. The Tito song now also, I feel like...

00:15:44 - 00:15:53 | Speaker 1:

Beautiful singing again. I know that's not the point of the contest. It's not purely... It is not a singing contest, but boy, Cheryl, some lovely,

00:15:53 - 00:16:25 | Speaker 2:

lovely singing. Yeah, Cheryl has a famously good singing voice um and we've heard it on display on the show before so that's a good contender i also wondered if it was a little bit like and i'm not accusing cheryl of of trying to uh cheat or or rewrite history or anything but i do feel like i hear you kind of reference because that's from um the little mermaid right yeah and i hear you reference that song and that movie quite a bit because of you know the age your daughter was when i think you guys watch that that's my go-to Yeah, so...

00:16:25 - 00:17:27 | Speaker 1:

Well, Little Mermaid, yeah, I'd say Little Mermaid is my... If it's not the top of the list, it's a close tie with, like, Robin Hood, animated Robin Hood, which is actually from a long time ago. Can I... I thought you were going to say Beauty and the Beast. I do love Beauty and the Beast as well. I've got a real soft spot for that. Although I never found the art of the Beast, like, literally the way that they rendered the Beast character. I agree. I didn't like the drawing. I agree. I agree. I never thought about it, but I agree. I want to mention that I have, Andrew, besmirched the good name of Faye Dunaway and not smirched enough the bad name of Lauren Bacall, because Lauren Bacall is the person who did the coffee commercial that Maya Rudolph does the SNL sketch based on. So I want to apologize to the Dunaway heads out there that I came for your lady. That was unfair. It was not Faye Dunaway. It was Lauren Bacall, who was apparently pretty testy in a coffee commercial in 1982.

00:17:27 - 00:17:39 | Speaker 2:

In 82? I was going to say, because Lauren Bacall is a different generation actor, because Faye Dunaway, you know, 70s and 80s and beyond. But Bacall, I think of as the silver screen, right?

00:17:40 - 00:17:59 | Speaker 1:

Yeah. Yeah, I just, I guess I filed, well, I unfortunately thought of them both as being, and you're right, Lauren Bacall, I'm sure, is older than Faye Dunaway. I thought of them both as major movie stars from a time before I was watching a lot of movies, but anyway, so I just wanted to correct the record on that. Now let's get back to your mistakes, Andrew. We should.

00:18:00 - 00:18:13 | Speaker 2:

Please. By not mentioning that Faye Dunaway was in Barfly, one of the only movies based on a Bukowski book, and The Champ, one of your favorite movies, I agree. One of your favorite go-on gets. Yeah, exactly.

00:18:14 - 00:18:23 | Speaker 1:

Okay, so here's what we're going to do. We're going to go through four today, and we'll do four tomorrow. And then at the end of tomorrow's show, we will pick the Grand Champion. We'll pick a Grand Champion.

00:18:23 - 00:18:32 | Speaker 2:

Yes, okay. So we have heard the Tito song from Cheryl and Corvallis, and now we got this. Now, this person didn't leave their name, but let's take a listen to their song.

00:18:32 - 00:19:07 | Speaker 4:

For our kitty, Emma. Emma, we love you, Emma, for all that you say and do, for the kind of kitty that you are, for the twinkle in your eyes. You go out You go in There it is!

00:19:07 - 00:19:14 | Speaker 1:

That's it? For Emma! That's it! I thought it was going to be a Bon Iver reference for Emma, forever ago. I wasn't sure.

00:19:14 - 00:19:17 | Speaker 2:

Is that a tune that you recognize? That's a tune.

00:19:17 - 00:19:32 | Speaker 1:

Well, that's the name of a song, a Bon Iver song that I really like. I do not think that that anonymous singer was doing an homage to that song. But when I heard For Our Cat, Emma, or For Emma, Our Cat, I thought that's where we were going.

00:19:32 - 00:19:38 | Speaker 2:

But do you recognize, so assuming that it's not a Bon Iver tune, you don't recognize that tune at all, do you?

00:19:38 - 00:19:50 | Speaker 1:

I did not recognize that tune. But I do, I'm curious, I want to dig into the line about the things you say. What does Emma the Cat say? I'm guessing a lot of meows. Okay.

00:19:50 - 00:20:00 | Speaker 2:

I don't know for sure, but there are meows. Genevieve was very proud of bingo a little bit ago, like literally like an hour or two ago. Genevieve said, you know, bingo is such a.

00:20:00 - 00:20:47 | Speaker 1:

a good communicator and he really is like there's something about bingo this is our cat i'm talking about now bingo he's a really smart cat and he communicates in ways that other cats don't he is very into using his paws to like he it's all it's sometimes almost human like the way he will like sort of tap you when he wants something he'll just like he'll reach up like tap tap tap tap tap tap and some like when he used to ride on my back and shoulders a lot more he would get up on a table and then just look up at me and go tap tap tap and i'd bend over and he would get on my back and And then he's been using his voice a little bit more lately, and Genevieve said she heard him meowing kind of loudly, like, meow, meow, meow, like kind of setting off an alarm. And she's like, what's wrong, dude? Did Timmy fall down a well? And she came around the corner, and apparently there was a big spider up on the ball where he couldn't reach it, but he wanted us to know that there was a spider or some sort of infestation.

00:20:48 - 00:21:28 | Speaker 2:

Speaking of bug infestation, I was in my house last night, and I was fixing up some dinner, And I turned my back and I turned back around And a fly had landed somewhere Not on my food but near it And I went out of here dude And I meant it Like it's one thing to speak to a cat In like the English language In a way that you think they might understand Which they may or may not You know depending There's no way a fly understood what I was saying But I wasn't doing it to be funny Or I was literally like I don't want that fly near my food I'm going to tell him to get out of here and i did like but i realized how futile that was right after i said it like that's not they

00:21:28 - 00:21:34 | Speaker 1:

don't speak english but they do frighten easily did the i thought i'm going to tell you that my

00:21:34 - 00:21:40 | Speaker 2:

big yeah lummox body walking over in the direction of where they were near my thai food but it didn't

00:21:40 - 00:21:49 | Speaker 1:

get on your food right what would you do if that fly had landed on your food you're not super germ phobic but you also don't like the idea of somebody brushing their teeth in a public bathroom

00:21:49 - 00:23:11 | Speaker 2:

so maybe you are germ i would um you know what i would probably have gotten over because i was very hungry and I had ordered these fresh rolls and this Thai food from this weird place in town where I called the guy I was getting my hair cut at the Great Clips and then I called the guy I got out of there and then I called the Thai restaurant and I said hey I'd like to order this stuff and I got this like basil rice thing with you know tofu and I said can you add broccoli like it has you know a list of the vegetables can you add broccoli and the guy who clearly like owns the place He's like, well, you want to add broccoli? I go, yeah, he goes, $3 extra And I thought, first of all Not the greatest sales job I've ever heard Like, you're making me sound insane for this And I said, okay, well I'll go ahead and do that I really want the broccoli And anyway, I pick the stuff up And when I get home and I open it It's just all broccoli and tofu Which, I love broccoli, so I wasn't really that mad It was a different kind of dish, though It was like a broccoli, tofu Really yummy basil sauce I put it over the rice. Like, I was actually totally happy, but I felt like if I was going to get no other vegetables other than broccoli, how is there? So if you replace all of the vegetables with broccoli, there's an upcharge for that, but I get none of the other vegetables. It's confusing. Maybe broccoli is more expensive than the other stuff.

00:23:11 - 00:23:27 | Speaker 1:

Still, though, that's weird. I think that that's just, yeah, that's just like kind of a misunderstanding. Although I was, I love Thai basil dishes. I love it, like, with the big leaves in there. But I'm trying to think if I usually – I wonder if there's something – I wonder if they usually don't put broccoli in a basil dish.

00:23:28 - 00:24:30 | Speaker 2:

I'm just trying to remember that. Because, you know, I'm often adding it. I get a lot of – I get this thing called holy basil as well from a different Thai joint that's, like, a little bit further down towards Portland. And I will have them add broccoli. I'm probably doing something that is not, like, in the flavor design scheme for this just because I just love broccoli and stuff. But the other thing was, this is the second time I've gotten stuff from this particular little Thai restaurant, and I always get a couple of salad rolls or fresh rolls, they're called sometimes. I love those things. But what they do at this place is the fresh rolls are very long, but they don't have a proper thing to put them in. So they put them in like a little foldable, like what you would have the rice in in a to-go container, and about 60% of the fresh roll is just hanging out. Just sticking out. That's rough. So it's like, what even is the point of this? And as I was driving home, it was and it was a near disaster at every turn because this does not sit upright in your car. No matter you put on the seat, you could put on the floor of the car. It's it's structurally very non-stable.

00:24:31 - 00:24:54 | Speaker 1:

Yeah, I mean, it was a real problem. I don't think I've seen that move, but I can totally picture it now. I've seen people because I get those a lot, too. They're so good. You get tofu, right? You don't get shrimp, I assume. Yeah, I do the tofu. I do like shrimp ones. But anyway, usually if it's the long time, if they're going to put it in one of those little, like, as you call it, a rice to go box, they will cut it in half. So if you get two of them, there will be like four halves in there. Which is totally fine.

00:24:54 - 00:24:59 | Speaker 2:

I would happily accept that. It was like a really. And then when I got home.

00:25:00 - 00:26:14 | Speaker 3:

here's how i end up driving home this brings us no closer to the next song but as i'm driving home i finally realize and all the things she says that's right i realized that the only way for me to do this is to just hold the bag the entire way home and drive with one hand because there was nowhere that i could put this that it would not want to tip over and the problem is if it tips over there's a peanut sauce situation the oh here's the other thing i think the fresh rolls are wrapped in cellophane but I couldn't quite tell and the last thing I wanted to have happen if I had this initially on the floor of my car I don't want to get a bunch of sauce spilled on my seat but if I put this on the floorboard of my car I don't want the fresh roll to tip over and touch the floor of my car if it's not fully cellophane'd in I had no good option so I had to just carry it drive with one hand carry it and then I got home and I put it on the counter and because it's top heavy the whole thing tips over the peanut butter which by the way that peanut butter peanut sauce whatever it is peanut sauce is that's like gold that's the whole key to the fresh roll experience it goes it gets catapulted out of the bag because of this top heaviness of the fresh rolls it loops it's like one of those um are those bounty commercials what are the ones

00:26:14 - 00:26:25 | Speaker 2:

oh yeah building stuff yeah everybody freaks out and the little ikea um animation the little ikea instructions start freaking out as the grape juice gets closer exactly and i was like no and in the

00:26:25 - 00:27:00 | Speaker 3:

split second this peanut sauce like plastic ramekin which is sealed is flipping through the air my whole meal is flashing before my eyes because i don't really want the salad roll the fresh roll without the peanut sauce and i don't have any peanut sauce except this which is going to splatter all over the floor which is not only the worst thing to splatter on the floor but and then i thought this whole thing i drove home holding this bag amazingly it landed on the lid but it did not disintegrate. It just landed on the lid, and it stayed closed, and everything was fine after that.

00:27:00 - 00:27:03 | Speaker 2:

Several things here. Get yourself some at-home peanut sauce, just as a good backup.

00:27:03 - 00:27:05 | Speaker 3:

I know. That was my second thought.

00:27:05 - 00:27:35 | Speaker 2:

Secondly, I'll bet you they were wrapped in cellophane. I was going to say, that's the other way I get them. It's not usually a combo of the little box plus cellophane, but there are times where I get those, and they'll wrap two of them together. It's kind of a pain in the ass to get the cellophane off of the rice paper, but it's doable. And then thirdly, I had a question for you because I love these things. I've housed many of them in my life. I like to, and maybe I get this from Vives, but when you get the peanut sauce, I like to drizzle a little sriracha on the top. Oh, I could get with that.

00:27:36 - 00:27:41 | Speaker 3:

Oh, yeah, that's a great idea. Well, I'm all out of salad rolls because I went crazy on them last night.

00:27:41 - 00:27:48 | Speaker 2:

But next time I will integrate some sriracha. Also, those don't keep, by the way. You got to eat them when they're fresh. Otherwise, that rice paper gets hard.

00:27:48 - 00:28:00 | Speaker 3:

I literally was about to brush my teeth, and I was like, but not until you eat your second salad roll. You're not going to bed until you've finished. Because it rubberizes. It is no good day two.

00:28:00 - 00:28:05 | Speaker 2:

At first, it rubberizes, and then it literally will sort of harden, and that's really a problem.

00:28:05 - 00:28:16 | Speaker 3:

Yeah, I don't know what that rice kind of, what do you call it, rice paper wrapping is. But it has a very, very, very limited shelf life as far as its usability.

00:28:16 - 00:29:07 | Speaker 2:

We don't have time to get into it now, but I do want to talk to you about something at some point, which is why they are putting cilantro in salad greens and spring mixes now. And it hasn't always been there, only I happen to get a batch with too much of it in there. Or is it a new thing? And why is it a thing? Are you one of those people for whom cilantro tastes like soap? No, I love cilantro in so many ways, but I was eating in just a salad the other day and I was like, wow, this salad really tastes like cilantro. And I looked at the mixed greens that I bought. and maybe it was a slightly different brand. I've been eating mixed greens my entire adult life, the kind that are ready to go out of the bag or out of the little plastic box in the grocery store. I didn't remember cilantro being in there or at least a big part of it. Maybe I just got a batch with a lot of cilantro, but holy cow, when you're eating just like a green salad, you don't want too much of that cilantro-y flavor in there. It doesn't seem to fit.

00:29:07 - 00:29:12 | Speaker 3:

I'd have to taste it because I do love me some cilantro. In most things, it's my favorite part.

00:29:12 - 00:29:34 | Speaker 2:

Tacos, sure. Anyway, okay, so thank you, Anonymous, this for sending in your emma song um and now here is a song i have to do this little trigger warning uh if you are listening with somebody with sensitive ears this does reference a body part that is sinful this comes from selena if you would like a bleeped version of this song

00:29:34 - 00:29:58 | Speaker 1:

you can get it at thislife.org hey dummies this is selena calling from portland maine long time 10 first time caller and this is one i used to sing to my boy opus doggy butt doggy butt doggy doggy doggy butt doggy butt doggy butt doggy butt doggy doggy butt

00:30:00 - 00:30:05 | Speaker 3:

Doggy butt, doggy butt, doggy, doggy, doggy, doggy butt. That's it.

00:30:06 - 00:30:11 | Speaker 1:

What you do is so important. Okay, so obviously I'll deep that. What you do is so important, Selena. Yes, that was very good.

00:30:11 - 00:30:26 | Speaker 2:

Thank you, Selena. I love that this is what finally got Selena to call in after however many years of listening to this. Also interesting that she didn't go with, were you singing Bingo Cat to the tune of Lollipop?

00:30:27 - 00:30:28 | Speaker 1:

Oh, yeah, Bingo Cat, Bingo Cat.

00:30:28 - 00:30:50 | Speaker 2:

And I could have heard, doggy butt, doggy butt, ooh, doggy, doggy butt, doggy butt. I like that. But Selena went in a different direction. Did that sound like, again, a reference to an existing song? Or was that just a sound purely made up in the clearly extremely healthy mind of Selena?

00:30:50 - 00:31:13 | Speaker 1:

I feel like that might have just been, you're right that it's reminiscent of. I mean, music is sort of, it's like an oral tradition, Luke, where one artist might influence another artist and then they turn it into their own thing, right? Right. Just don't mess around with the Marvin Gaye estate. No, no. That's one thing we learned from Blurred Lines. But, yeah, I think that's an original.

00:31:13 - 00:31:56 | Speaker 2:

I love that Selena did not overcomplicate this song with lyrics and stories and, you know, literary references This is a song that knows what it is It's a song called Doggy Butt And there's no need to add too much other stuff to it It's solid, it's dependable, you know what you're going to get when this song starts And that is the word doggy and the word butt many times in a row And I respect that, because that is the mark of some very good pet songs. We've had a whole range this week. We've had the songs that are a whole involved story, and we've had the songs that are just meat and potatoes, just doggy and butt.

00:31:56 - 00:32:04 | Speaker 1:

Exactly. I mean, it does tell a story, too, and that's what I like about it. It doesn't overcomplicate it, but it tells the story of a dog who has a butt, and that butt is a doggy butt.

00:32:05 - 00:32:19 | Speaker 2:

I mean, one of the main things, you know this because you taught writing at Kent State University. One of the hardest things to do when you're writing is to do less. exactly exactly it's like this this does even less than than less it's very spare

00:32:19 - 00:33:05 | Speaker 1:

doggy butt for sale never used it was really the spirit of that song that might be the god what a story you've said a lot that might be the show title um i'll write that down um but we also have to play another song here this will be the final finalist of of today's group of today's show we've got yeah and then exactly so we're gonna have to well of course no nobody ever forgets about the time bracket um but we are gonna have to pick a favorite of today so you know it could be the opening tape we heard from cheryl the emma song the doggy butt song or this from kathy and olympia and there's an element of this talk about storytelling that i think is going to appeal to you hi this is kathy

00:33:05 - 00:33:29 | Speaker 3:

in olympia years ago in the early 90s my husband and i would take our cat along when we went out on a boat it was a slow safe trawler and she only went into the drink a couple times one of her favorite places to hang out was the helm station and we watched too much saturday night live at the time and so we would sing to her casey the boat cat the cat who could drive a

00:33:29 - 00:33:37 | Speaker 1:

boat power out is that where you thought it was going yeah toonces exactly toonces one of my

00:33:37 - 00:33:47 | Speaker 2:

favorite sketches from snl when i was young i just thought it was the funniest thing because wasn't the premise like toonces the driving cap at the count always crash the car over a cliff

00:33:47 - 00:34:14 | Speaker 1:

yeah which is funny like i wonder if that would hold up like i loved that too because to me i am of that era where the 90s snl was the best because i was a certain age where it seemed like it's very special to me right and now i wonder if you and i with our you know with our worldliness luke if we were to see tunes is the driving cat just as a as a brand new sketch on an snl uh episode in 2024 would we even think it's funny yeah would it have enough going for it it might

00:34:14 - 00:34:59 | Speaker 2:

i mean i'm not trying to say no but i wonder yeah i wonder as well i just watched one a sketch that i'd never seen from snl that of course popped up on my tiktok and it was i i don't even know how It ended but I found it so funny And entertaining even though Kind of nothing was happening so basically This is the premise Phil Hartman is a guy who has Just gotten out of the joint And he's in a kind of a Seedy motel room and he's about To have a Passionate time with Jan Hooks Who's playing a kind of disinterested Sex worker So he's like Phil Hartman's like yeah the doctor is in And I'm gonna really give it to you and she's like it's your money Right and Kevin Nealon is

00:35:00 - 00:36:01 | Speaker 1:

playing this like peeping tom who just keeps because like the the shade is broken on the motel room window and the peeping tom he just keeps showing up and it just keeps making phil hartman so mad and he keeps threatening to kill him but for some reason he doesn't and then he'll like pull him in through the window and then he'll like scare the the living tweedle out of him then he'll throw him back out the window and then he'll get back into his mode of like seducing this jan hooks his character and then kevin neal will just show up again and then he'll get really mad at him and it's like that seems to be what the sketch is so is this like the last sketch of the night type of deal this maybe it was weird but it was so weird but it was also so so funny because phil hartman was so committed to it i also had this boy talk about ending on a up note i was like i can't believe phil hartman and jan hooks are not alive oh yeah i forgot that before kevin neiland showed up it was just phil hartman and jan hooks i didn't know where the sketch was going And I thought, man, these are two unbelievably talented performers that are no longer with us for very different reasons. And I was like, what a bummer.

00:36:01 - 00:36:23 | Speaker 2:

No disrespect to Jan Hooks, who, you know, I like her work as well. But Phil Hartman died, you know, quite a bit earlier and so tragically. And it's just like it feels like a day doesn't go by in our house where Genevieve and I will just be like, damn, Phil Hartman. Like he just he was above and beyond. And again, well, that was the story on him.

00:36:23 - 00:36:50 | Speaker 1:

I think I might've, I'm sorry. No, no, go ahead. Go ahead. I might've said this the last time the topic of Phil Hartman came up, but I was learning a lot about him. Like he had a whole career as a graphic designer before he ever did comedy. And he designed the album covers of some pretty big albums in the eighties and then just got talked into coming up during a, like a groundlings show or something. And the people who were there with him said he was just immediately the best person there.

00:36:50 - 00:36:57 | Speaker 2:

and it wasn't even his thing. I'm looking up the album covers because I'm trying to figure out if this rings a bell. I feel like I remember you telling me this, but I can't.

00:36:57 - 00:37:07 | Speaker 1:

I talked about this. I think I learned this fact like four or five months ago. Yeah, and maybe so. And so I brought it up the last time the topic of Phil Hartman came up. But just like, yeah, I mean, the guy was just bursting.

00:37:08 - 00:37:43 | Speaker 2:

Oh, he's so much better at comedy than album cover design, though, I will say that. And also, don't forget, he was in those early, I don't know the course of his career, but also those early, like, very gritty live performances of Paul Rubin's, you know, early version of Pee-wee Herman. Remember, like, Phil Harden played, like, a really, like, kind of dirty, perverted sort of guy, I think. Really? And then they might have, like, softened that guy up and brought him into the TV show from time to time. But if you watch any of those old, like, because you remember, do you remember seeing clips of, like, live Pee-wee Herman stuff on stage?

00:37:43 - 00:37:50 | Speaker 1:

I know that it got its start as like a kind of alternative comedy L.A. thing, right? But I don't know if I've ever seen the footage of it.

00:37:50 - 00:38:17 | Speaker 2:

Yeah, I don't know. But anyway, okay, so let's go over what we heard today and pick a winner. This is always the tough part. We had Cheryl's Tito song. That was really good. You've got to kiss the bird. We Love You, Emma from Anonymous. Selena had a song that, if I recall, was about a doggy's butt. And then Kathy and Olympia giving honor to Toonses with her own kitty on a boat. um would you like i've just been handed the envelope actually andrew

00:38:17 - 00:38:42 | Speaker 1:

you think you just fell out of a coconut tree um i feel like i have been driving the decisions for the last couple of shows and i think i'd like to defer to you at least initially what where

00:38:42 - 00:38:50 | Speaker 2:

are you leaning on this one i'm leaning i think towards cheryl's bird song i think that or doggy

00:38:50 - 00:39:11 | Speaker 1:

czechoslovakian dictator i'm yeah i could see i mean it's interesting because uh you do have very i think my two favorites are doggy butt and bird song again i love all of these all of these charming i also want to know more about kathy's story of taking this cat on a boat yeah sounds

00:39:11 - 00:39:19 | Speaker 2:

like the cat likes it so it sounds like you and i are in agreement that it is down to those two doggy putt and the bird song um they're very different kinds of songs they really are known

00:39:19 - 00:39:25 | Speaker 1:

one simple and spare and one is uh you know a pretty involved jam and one is a parody in the

00:39:25 - 00:39:47 | Speaker 2:

in the grand honored tradition yes let it wash over you it's so fight it um we do have doggy but for sale never used as the show title. I don't know if that argues for or against that. As the one who walks out of today's show still with competition left in front of it.

00:39:48 - 00:39:59 | Speaker 1:

Can we do it as a, is there a guessing game? Is there some way to, like, I do, like, how many fingers am I holding up? I don't know what that answers.

00:40:00 - 00:40:01 | Speaker 2:

because there's some kind of a tiebreaker.

00:40:01 - 00:43:01 | Speaker 1:

It's one, and it's your middle finger, and I do not appreciate that at all. You know I'm a longstanding, I'm a big thumbs down on the middle finger up in the photos. But how do you feel about the crossed arms? The crossed arms is great, right? Crossed arms, I'm good with that. I mean, again, I don't get to choose what people do in photos. It takes so much. For my money, the middle finger to the camera is just, I don't, that's not the energy I am trying to put in the world. That's just me. I know you're not. I don't know, man. Doggy butt or bird song. You know what we're going to do? We're going to flip a coin. Wait, is that a TBTL? No, I don't have any of those. I'm not rich. I have one of them. Okay. I feel like that's what we should do then. Okay, so this is the TBTL. Heads is Cheryl's song, and Tails is Selena's song. And just to be clear, Heads is, this is the I Save TBTL coin. Heads would be you and me in a boat together. and Tails would be the, what do you call it, the holly Ad Proximum Conwadium? Exactly, I saved TBT on the back And so we said Heads is Cheryl Tails is Selena So you said Heads is Cheryl? Heads is Cheryl in Corvallis, Tails is Selena Oh no Stop the show he's just flipping it multiple times i did it i just did it twice one time it landed on the floor but now it's under my hand i'm ready to reveal you said heads would be cheryl and tails this is tails i saved tbtl it's tails selena wow doggy but doggy but doggy but doggy but moves on to the next round Cheryl you gave it your all you really did Cheryl and also that was an amazing rendition of that song but you know the coin is the coin is tough justice but that's what we had to refer to today or had to resort to today okay so that means Andrew now the almost final four which we are allowed to call it is what we've got we've got Clementine singing Roscoe the retired outlaw from monday show we've got natalie in new orleans doing the kind of flapper inspired song love that yeah uh we've got uh caitlin um doing a howl cat that's right yes chum head i believe and also nice that we're getting a cat in there because are all the other ones the the first two were they dog related oh i don't um my goodness i kind of don't well Well, obviously, we think Roscoe was a cat, obviously. Oh, yeah, Roscoe was a cat. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Roscoe was a cat. And I can't remember what the Flapper song was. The Flapper, I think, might have been a dog. I don't recall. I believe it was a dog. We've got Caleb talking about Hal, Cat. And then Doggy Bud. And now we've got, yeah, that's right.

00:43:01 - 00:44:59 | Speaker 1:

So we've got four-fifths of the way there to the final five, and that's going to be tomorrow. And before we do that, we should thank some donors. today we're thanking daily donors brian wilcoxson of tallahassee florida boy you're really um i love this andrew you're keeping me so mentally sharp some days we go it goes city state some days it goes state city and i just have to react this is like the way that you know high level athletes It's like LeBron James, like before a game, he's standing on like a weird ball that's uneven while someone's throwing him tennis balls and it's making different parts of his brain and reaction fire. Well, it's just as I forgot. I need to change the actual, the source material that we get this from, the spreadsheet, if you will. But yesterday I went through and I just physically moved these around. I can do it again here. I'm moving. No, no, no. This is good. I'm telling you this helps. Oh, good, here. I'm going to alternate. This helps me. Look at this. Okay. Alternate by line. Can you see what I'm doing here? I am messing with you. Katie Witham of Chicago, Illinois. Indeedly do. Thank you, Katie. Thank you, Katie. Meg Curtis of Melrose, Massachusetts. See, what you all can't tell is I had to skip right over Massachusetts, go right to Melrose, and then back to Massachusetts. Thanks, Meg. Thanks to Marion Benner of Maple Valley, Washington. Marion, the name is well represented on this week's shows. It is. It's also the, well, it's a different spelling, but that's my niece's name. Oh, that's a good name. My mom's middle name. My mom's middle name is Marion. Susan Marion Kelly Burbank. Nice. Different spelling, though. Burton Cooley. Hey. That's my dad's middle name, although I never met him. Sounds like he was an interesting dude. In Lakeville, Minnesota. Nice. Thank you, Burton. Burton. Thanks, Burton. We've met Burton before. Oh, many times. Cooley is ice, as I like to say. Yep. Yep. And then Natasha.

00:45:00 - 00:45:06 | Speaker 2:

donovan is in washington bellingham uh washington bellingham you know i knew i was going to fumble

00:45:06 - 00:45:13 | Speaker 3:

this one at some point stay for a drink or maybe a lifetime subdued that's what it is yes hey

00:45:13 - 00:45:51 | Speaker 2:

natasha hope you're having a nice time up there in one of my very favorite places on earth i do every time we read we read our friend stacy sledge the other day who's up in bellingham and i I really do get a nostalgic and kind of wistful feeling thinking about, you know, that place where I used to live. It was a really good time. I did not expect to fall in love with the city of subdued excitement the way that I did. I have to admit, I didn't have a lot of thoughts about Bellingham when we moved over there. It was a practical consideration because it was a little closer to things than Port Townsend was, but it really, really grew on me, and I really enjoyed my time there.

00:45:52 - 00:45:54 | Speaker 3:

It's actually known as the Bay City, Luke. I don't know if you knew that.

00:45:55 - 00:46:05 | Speaker 2:

Oh, I'm unfamiliar with that terminology. I wonder if there's anyone walking around Bellingham. Maybe Natasha saying the Bay City, and someone's going, I don't think that's what they call it. And they're like, it's a long story.

00:46:05 - 00:46:06 | Speaker 3:

Yeah, exactly.

00:46:06 - 00:46:28 | Speaker 2:

Well, thank you to all of our donors today for making TBTL possible. That's going to do it for today's special episode, but we will be back tomorrow with another one. We're going to go through a few more songs, and we are going to pick a winner of TBTL Pet Sounds Song Tournament Silly Little Dove Songs.

00:46:30 - 00:46:37 | Speaker 3:

Tomorrow is Friday. It's got to be music for your weekend. We have to come up with something so good to knock that off the pedestal.

00:46:38 - 00:46:43 | Speaker 2:

All right. Thanks for listening, everybody. We'll be back here tomorrow with more Imaginary Radio for you. Meantime, have a great Thursday. Take care of yourselves.

00:46:43 - 00:46:48 | Speaker 3:
