It's the final day of Pet Sounds, the TBTL Pet Song Tournament, also known as Cat Calls, Dog Whistling, Music for Marmots, Snake Songs, Turtle Tunes, Songs, Chinchilla, Siddly Little Dove Songs, and, of course, Music for Your Beacon. I'm Luke Burbank, by the way, right over there, My good friend, the longest-running co-bro of the show, Mr. Andrew Walsh. Hello.

Hello. I know we're doing people, and I'm not trying to turn this into heroes or overplay our role in all of this, but I know that this week of shows is coming at a good time for our listenership because a lot of people have been missing the excitement of the Olympics, which happened earlier this summer. And the competition, and as you referenced, the tension. And we're sort of bringing some of that back with this competition.

To the methadone, to the hard stuff that everybody was experiencing during the Olympics. Just the adrenalized, excited energy of watching the guy from Turkey shoot a gun without the proper equipment. And, yeah, we didn't want to, like, leave our listeners in the lurch. So we've brought them something that's exciting enough.

People consider me the pole vaulter who got a part of himself caught on the bar of, I think it's for me that guy of the TVTL.

You know, back when that was happening, Andrew, below those many weeks ago, I was very tempted to bring that up as a topic, but I didn't because I thought you might think

it was a little bit fresh for our show. It is a little fresh, but it's also the human body, Luke, and who am I to say that?

It is, get used to it, and honestly, if I was going to miss out on a medal, what a reason. What a reason. Like, people miss out on medals for all kinds of non-penile reasons.

Hey, why did you lose? Well. Good news, bad news situation.

I'd like to tell you about that if I could. I mean, what a way to not qualify for. You know what I found interesting about that whole pole vault? The guy who ended up winning it, who's an interesting character. He's, I believe he pole vaulted for, like, LSU. um his name is like mondo duplantis or something i mean i think okay so he's changed his name who did he murder was he a bank robber can you believe the guy with the giant hog wasn't named mondo duplantis the guy with the regular hog was named mondo no he's from this like pole vaulting family but because i one of his parents is like from sweden or has swedish citizenship i believe he was doing this. He was flying under the colors of Sweden. Of course, this was weeks ago, Andrew. We've all put this in the rearview mirror, but he set, I think, a world record. I mean, he's a complete phenom. He's a young guy in his 20s. But what I thought was interesting was he has to fly with the poles and they're 17 feet long, and he said it is just a nightmare getting through the airport. I believe that. Yeah, so you have

your special pole. You're not going to use it in the same way you might have a special pole.

piece it together. It's not like three sections of five feet of pole, because of course it's got to be super duper sturdy. So it just, and he said that only certain airplanes have the cargo hold capacity for something of that length. So you can't even just fly on any flight. You have to somehow go in and figure out what body type of airplane they're flying. And he said, all he's doing when he goes to the airport is, I'm so sorry, excuse me, I'm sorry. And I just thought, well, I found Andrew's nightmare yeah right it's a stress dream wheeling a pole a series of pole vaulting poles

through the airport only I in mine I'm carrying it like a cross like I'm a balance beam person I'm trying to go against a crowd that ring that's what it's like for that other guy going through the airport all right calm down I shouldn't have brought it see this is why I can't make a quick pass a quick tasteful passing reference because then you're just going to hog it up you're gonna Yeah, I apologize. But, you know, I'm sure this has been written about before, but it seems like airports would be an incredibly interesting place during the Olympics, especially in, like, the home city, right? Like, wouldn't it just... be fun to like just like park yourself in a public area in the um paris airport and just like watch all these people with somebody wheel out a javelin yeah exactly just you know whatever the various yeah whatever the various instruments are borders i guess that's the wrong that's the wrong game i

was just thinking like wouldn't you just like fed exit wouldn't you take i guess it's like if you lose those poles i mean those are your yeah you know that that's that's your your livelihood as it were i mean you you probably don't even dare let them out of your sight i guess would be the only explanation for why he was the one wheeling him because it seems like you could just get some kind of freight service to do it for you and you just meet you at your destination that's true

question i don't know what the latest i know obviously college sports have changed with the nil deals but i don't know how that applies to the olympic situation i think i think mondo du plantis and the other dude are both doing just fine well they're definitely doing fine in some

ways um okay so let's get into this the final day of tbtl's pet sounds competition at the beginning we have some new candidates to go through today and then we need to pick a winner out of all five brackets of course west east south north and time today we're going to go through the time bracket and then we're going to decide um who wins the overall competition um we heard for the time bracket um the uh the song from ann in oklahoma um tonight pants sung to the tune of hot stuff yeah hot stuff right yeah that's what i was picking up looking for some hot stuff baby

reason i said living in a box is because the band living in a box put out the hit song living in a box off the album living in a box in the 80s and even as a kid i thought wow um there's a consistency there that i haven't heard well i hadn't heard it again until doggy butt right yesterday's well

for champion i know i say this every time but for me it's the song black sabbath by black sabbath off their record black sabbath very first song i don't think i knew that they even did a song Like I said this here, I can't play it for you because we'll get taken down. But it starts. I mean, I remember always hearing about Black Sabbath and being very afraid of Black Sabbath and knowing that I was definitely not allowed to listen to Black Sabbath. Like there was no doubt about that. But then I got to a certain age where I had a little bit more, you know, I wasn't being monitored as much. I was like, you know, a young teenager, probably 14, 15 or whatever. And people were telling me, hey, the first Black Sabbath record, like you think of them as just like their 80s, like, you know, whatever. But like they were kind of, you know, early, heavy, classic rock and also defining a genre, starting a genre, really, in some ways.

And some very sweet songs like that I'm Going Through Changes song, Mama, I'm Coming Home.

Sure, yeah. I saw the softer side of Sears on some of those. But the first songs are the very, so I'm like, OK, I guess I'll buy it. And I think that the album cover is not super scary, but it's just like a lone person standing in a field sort of gives you a little bit of the shivers. and then you probably bought it used as I did. So you put it in your cassette player and you rewind it and then you hit play and you hear that tape hiss and you just hear dong. And I'm not talking about, when I say dong, I'm talking about the bell here. It's confusing with the Olympic talk earlier. I'm talking about dong, like these scary bells start ringing and then I believe a guitar comes imitating the bells and it's very dark and it's very, very gothic. And then the vocals come in, and it's Ozzy Osbourne, of course. He says, what is this that stands before me? How am I doing? Great. I'm worried about a thing pulled down.

Did Chad get in early on that something was a Bruin for old TBTL? Because I believe, did you all first meet him during a weekend that you and John, we had sort of had our secret meeting in Portland to chart the TBTL escape rocket out of the network from APM, where we still worked. And then we go to my father's place, and then Chad is there. And I don't know how much Chad really cared. but it's like, huh, Andrew and John here, no talk about this on the show. What's going on?

I love the brevity. I love the honesty.

I love the roughing him up a little bit. Do you think the cat dreads this or loves this? If this was a dog, I think we would know the dog would love it. There's not even a question. I'll bet you that cat loves it. As we point out, are finicky. Do you think the cat loves it or hates it?

I bet you the cat loves it for about 15 seconds and then runs away, but then comes back for more later. Genevieve really roughs up Bingo, and I don't mean that in a scary way, but Bingo's very kind of dog-like in some of his tastes. And so I think he does like to – like Genevieve, he loves Genevieve so much, and that's why I know he just is her shadow. I can tell he's bummed when she's not around, when she has to like kind of work from from the office or whatever, because like she has this whole thing with him. She makes the bed with him in the morning where she pulls back the sheets and he comes running in from another room and then she covers him up and she's like, where's Bingo? And he's like, I'm here. And then she roughs them all up and then he runs away and then he runs back for more rough. And so like he definitely, I think, reacts well to that. Not all cats like that, though.

my relationship with bubbles and that kind of stuff is kind of reminiscent of like an era of television in hollywood that i think you're particularly not a fan of andrew which is the kind of like i know this person keeps turning me down for this date but i'm going to just push through i pick bubbles up i pat her tummy i kind of hold her on my shoulder and i pat her tummy and she's kind of squirming i know she doesn't like it but i kind of think secretly she likes a little bit of kind of human contact and so I don't know I'm assuming that even though she doth protest I think she doth protest too much and I think that she I think it's good for her to have a little bit of a little bit of human touch. Yeah and I think

after a while like she will like cats kind of you know they fall into patterns and habits you know what's been very sweet with me lately is you know my relationship with our older cat professor Bananas has taken many many twists and turns over the years because she's always been a i've always been used to having very gregarious cats who like to snuggle and be very friendly and bananas has always been friendly to me but always like she needs her own space she doesn't really like to sleep on us that much except for under very specific circumstances i have to be like laying on my side and she'll sit up on my hip like but she's been getting more and more especially in the past two years as she's gotten used to the new cat bingo being in the house she's been getting more and more relaxed and one thing that she's been doing just in the past week or two is when I

I get out of the shower in the morning, and this might have to do with we change the way we feed the cats in the morning, and I feed her in the basement now where my bathroom is as well. And so she's over in the kitchenette area eating. I jump in the shower, and then when I'm done with the shower and I open my bathroom door, she's been waiting for me outside the door for pet pets, and she jumps up on the toilet seat. And if the toilet seat is open, I have to put it down for her. And, you know, my old cat Theo used to do this with me, and I called it Toilet Time with Tio. And now we have toilet time with Tananas and she'll jump up there and like, and she really like loves that affection. And even her, like she can't take too much before she starts purring so much that then she has to go run, run somewhere else and like do something with her purring. Like she just gets too stimulated, I think, but she, she likes it, but she only likes it to a degree. But she's like waiting for it every morning now, a little toilet time with Tananas.

I think the thing with me and Bubbles Is because she's at Becca's house And so I see her a couple days a week I think our dynamic For the moment has kind of shifted To where it's like Because when she was living with me full time We were just like homies And we would always be doing stuff And I would drive her around places And do all kinds of annoying things to her As far as cuddling her and stuff And we had kind of a vibe I think we'll get the vibe back Once she's back up here

patterns and habits I think are especially important to cats maybe even more so for dogs I'm not sure I don't know dogs

And there's a young woman who I'm going to put maybe like probably a little bit older than high school, but like probably early, early college age, like early twenties or something like that. And she finishes up one song, I guess, and then she kind of gives a little patter. And then she's talking about, she's like, well, you know, I was in a competition down in southern Ohio.

I have, again, we never, here we are on the final day, we still haven't come up with a really airtight system for how we judge this or how we decide the winner when there's exactly two votes. But I think I would make the argument for the Biggie Smalls Cat song by Chad. And here's why. One, it represents a genre that I don't think we have represented in any of the other songs. True. And I could see myself doing it.

We haven't been kind of asking people to send in summer games the way we have in the past, but I do think in a couple of weeks we'll play some games that people have sent into us anyway and so I don't want to I don't want to put these two weeks up against each other because they're both very fun well it literally was a competition but we've been doing the summer games for so long that it was nice to do something that shook up the birdcage a little bit no offense Cheryl and also I just do that either never ever ever shake a Tito but I love hearing the I loved hearing the voices of the listeners and an excuse to sing as well.
