You might recall earlier this summer, Luke and I asked you to flood our voicemail line with your own personal pet songs, because we know a lot of you TBTL10s out there are pet owners. You love your pets, and we know that if you have a pet, you almost certainly sing to that pet. You might not even realize that you're singing to your pet or that you have special songs for them until you stop and you examine it for a moment. You're like, oh, yeah, I've been singing this song to my pet, my dog or my cat or my horse or my rooster, for years now. And so we asked you to share those songs with us, and boy, did you ever. Luke and I spent, was it last week? I can't keep my week straight. I think it was last week Luke and I listened to, and let's be honest, judged all of the little ditties that you guys sent in to us, the songs that you sing to your precious babies. But even after our special week of programming ended, our answering machine, Yeah, we have a little answering machine set up in the corner, and it kept blinking with more and more and more songs that you guys were sending in, and we are excited to share some more of those with you today, and we're going to do it with the help of a very special guest who is making her TBTL debut. She's a vlogger, an influencer. She's obsessed with sci-fi. I know that. She's known to many people as the Theo Vaughn of Star Trek podcasts. You are clearly podcast guest material. It's written all over your clothes and your hair and your shoes. Her name is Navia, longtime listener of TBTL, joining me now from her studio in the Bay Area. How are you doing, Navia?

Hi, Andrew. Hi, Chance. I'm doing so well.

Thank you for doing this. How are you feeling?

Of course. I'm doing good.

Good, good, good, good. Now, I didn't do the best job of introducing you there. Let's just be honest about that. I think I called you both a vlogger and a podcaster, which I don't think either one of those are really accurate and kind of show my age. What do you do? Are you a netizen? What are you doing out there?

I'm not even sure what the official titles are anymore. I just make TikToks and Instagram reels about Star Trek or whatever I really am into nowadays.

But I did have the Star Trek part, right? Like, that is your main deal. And you used to have a YouTube show about Star Trek, right?

Yes. Yep. But life gets busy, so.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Where are you in your Star Trek journey right now? And explain it to me as if. Like, just pretend for a moment, like, I don't know much about the Star Trek universe.

Well, there's a million different TV shows. And at this point, I'm all caught up.

You're totally, totally caught up.

What is the last one? Does it have Picard? I know Picard came back, right?

Mm-hmm. Picard is back, but the latest one is Star Trek Prodigy. It's like a cartoon or an animation show that they did in partnership with Nickelodeon.

Interesting. Now, wait a second, though. Is there also something called Star Trek Below Decks, and is that also animated? Lower Decks. Yeah. That's also animated. What's the deal with that, and what's the difference?

That's for adults.

So that's more like South Park-y, like Simpsons kind of, I think. I haven't really watched any of those shows really, so I can't really do a proper comparison. But it's more like adult humor. Prodigy is for the kids, but it's still such a great show.

I see. So Prodigy, they could see it as a gateway track, sort of. Get them hooked. What is your favorite era? Because there must be at least kind of 10. Am I right in thinking when you start with the original series and then the next generation and then on from there. Would you say there are like 10 different eras?

I think I would say three because like originally started with the original shows and then all the movies and then there was like a little bit of a break and then we had like Next Gen, Voyager, DS9, all of those. And then there's a little bit of break and then all the new stuff.

I see. All the new stuff being stuff that like was released kind of in the Paramount Plus era when they started applying like kind of better production value and stuff.

Yeah.

and they started charging us yeah okay and they started making you pay for it as well how do you feel about the production value obviously I don't want to I'm not here to slam on on Star Trek something that a lot of people love and that clearly obviously that you love but I will say that it's very hard for me to explain what it is about like kind of early era Star Trek and I don't mean the original series that has its own complete sort of cinematic vibe because of the technology at the time but the sort of 90s show starting with the next generation Like I can watch almost anything in a room with Genevieve if I'm just sort of like kind of zoning out and I'm on my boop boop and playing my games or my solitaire or whatever I'm doing. But there's always something about and the shows that I like to do that to are like Monk maybe or, you know, any kind of an maybe an older show like Murder, She Wrote or whatever. And it just sort of feels cozy and warm. But there is always something about the Star Trek of the 90s that always felt very, very cold and fluorescent to me.

uh-huh you know what i mean i feel the exact opposite like the yeah like next generation voyager those are the ones that are like kind of from like the 90s to like the early 2000s those feel cozy to me even though like star trek ds9 is super dark like i just love those shows

because they're they're my cozy shows whoopee goldberg is she still is she still sort of

kicking around the universe wait i'm trying to think did we see her in picard i think we did We saw a younger version. I don't remember if we saw the older version.

Okay, but the thing that fascinates me about that, and I just got this because I think Genevieve mentioned this, because Genevieve loves Star Trek. I don't think that she watched the Nickelodeon one. I don't think she'd have interest in that. But everything else, I think she's caught up on. And our friends have a podcast called The Greatest Generation where they started with The Next Generation and did a recap podcast about it and kept going. And it's quite popular now. And I've seen them live. Even as a non-Trekkie, I find them to be. very entertaining fellas but um uh she was telling me that whoopi goldberg was part of the next generation i think wherever she made her debut strictly because she was a fan she was a trekkie

and wanted to get involved do you know about that yeah i think she like talked to gene roddenberry to get in oh really i think they didn't have like a budget or something for her and then she was like no i'll do whatever just give me a part because she was a big star when that movie came on or

sorry when that show started uh-huh yeah yeah she was kind of like almost like yeah i don't know if you would call that her peak but i mean i don't know maybe late 80s but yeah i mean she's she's at pretty much the height of stardom and she's also she's one of the rare egots yeah yeah in fact did she get her e from start no she probably didn't get an emmy for star trek does star trek

get many emmys uh not that i know maybe the later ones i don't remember if the originals did always But it's crazy because I think the first couple of seasons of Star Trek, The Next Generation, which is the one whoopies and got like terrible reviews, but she still wanted to be part of it. So that's crazy to me.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. And I do love it. And she's kind of like, because I mean, I think that, I don't know, I feel, even though like I have no connection to the universe at all, I feel protective of Trekkies. I grew up in the era where it was just like they were the butt of all the jokes. And then the jokes got so lazy, like so lazy, you know, just like a stand in.

it's crazy because like even growing up me watching star trek it was a secret andrew i didn't tell

anybody really and now here you are here you are out here yeah i mean i found other people like me so you know we can all be weird together yeah yeah you mentioned we were chatting a little bit before the show and a couple of times you mentioned that you have a brother a little brother is that right is does he share the love as well did you guys sort of bond over that yeah we he would watch

like the original shows with me like next generation he hasn't really seen any of the new stuff but he's seen all the old stuff and yeah he's a semi trekkie i don't know okay gotcha

as a real trekkie you have to make sure like not yes not to hand out any uh false valor um now i am very excited to get in to the pet songs that we have set up for today we got like i think six of these things but before we get into that you mentioned i said hey do you have anything that you want to talk about or do we just do the pet song stuff anything you're like nope nope that's fine just as long as i can talk about my secret beef with luke it's like oh well that sounds like that's a half hour of material right there no pressure do i know about the secret beef you have with luke no but you're part of it

What side am I on? Is it a beef with both of us or just Luke? Because I'm fine with it just being Luke. I promise you, he will never hear this. He will never hear this. Say whatever you want.

So earlier this year, I had the opportunity to be on Weekend Review. We did two episodes, right? Yeah, yeah, yeah. The first episode was with you, me, and Luke. my mom watches it and she's like oh my god i love this the second episode is just you and me she gets halfway through the episode and she's like where's the young and funny one and you know what andrew it's fine that she thinks luke is young luke puts a lot of effort into his looks that's fine i don't care about the young it's the funny that got me i don't I thought you and I were hilarious.

Where is the young and funny one? Where is the young and funny one? I am cutting this all out. I cannot. I thought that we were going to have an opportunity here to absolutely roast the man who has left me saddled with doing an entire week of shows myself. And the problem is that he has been deemed or dermed the young and funny one. I don't know that I have the confidence to get through the rest of this podcast, Navia.

Yeah, well, that's true, too. I guess you kind of took a stray there. I guess I have been centering myself in this, but still, come on.

Yeah, so I don't know. I don't know, Andrew. I don't know how to deal with all this.

I don't know either, but I guess we could get your mom on the phone. That's one way we could deal with it right now, just like confrontation. But that might involve more production do-hickory than I have right now. Would Luke say do-hickory? Is that funny? Do you love me now, Navia's mom? Hmm, okay.

Now, before we get into the pet songs, I mean, I think everybody understands the assignment here. You know, like I have my, I think I've probably given these examples on the show before. We have our younger, sort of more charismatic cat. Let's, I guess the Luke of our cat named Bingo. And like, I find myself, I was like, yeah, I guess I don't have any songs that I sing to Bingo. and then I just think about it for a moment. All I have to do is picture myself opening up a can of cat food and then I'm like, oh, of course I sing. I sing bingo cat, bingo cat, ooh la la, bingo cat, or bingo, easy bing, easy bing, easy bingo. Bingo, come in, he wants more food. That was Dayo by Harry Belafonte. I'm not sure if you're able to pick up on that or not. Are you familiar with the source material or just I mangled it in a way that was incomprehensible. Anyway, so those are the types of songs we sing to our cats. And people have been singing them on our voicemail line. Excited to get to today's batch. But I wanted to ask you, have you had a pet? Do you have any pet songs?

No, no pets. Growing up in an immigrant household, I don't think my parents were ever really about having pets around.

Just culturally, it just wasn't something that they were used to? or it was just another headache that they didn't want to have to deal with?

Probably more of a headache, because I think my brother and I were more than enough for them to handle, so they're like, no pets.

I believe that. Did you want a pet, or did it not even really kind of enter the equation?

Well, I'm the eldest kid, so I was always like, follow rules, like, be good. So I was like, okay, no pets. I didn't even think about it. My little brother, though, he always wanted a dog.

Do you have a song that you sing to your brother?

No.

It was Luke's idea to set up the songs in a bracket so they could compete. I think that was good for the full week, but today feels like it's all gravy. You know what I mean? Nobody has to be nervous out here. I was listening to somebody on another podcast talking recently about how they're a big bowler, right? And they want to bowl the perfect game. That's their goal. But if they mess up on the very, very first frame, they'll do really well the rest of the game because all of the pressure is off. this guy was saying that like basically he was one pin away from potentially having a perfect game because he got like a he only got nine pins and then left it open in the very first frame and but then he bowled literally perfectly after that literally perfectly like that because all the pressure was off he's like if i had been bowling strikes the whole time then i got to the 10th frame my legs would have been shaken so anyway um all the pressure is off everybody's a winner today everybody gets a participation trophy including uh katherine sorry we missed that one katherine for your dear orange cat jean ralphio uh we also have a song from lisa here

It felt so loving as it was whispered, and I was leaning in closer and closer. Lisa also mentioned that she has, like, a Siamese-looking cat. I think that's the deal with Bingo. Did you know that Bingo got a DNA test?

No, you can do that?

But should you do that?

Does it tell you? Is Bingo going to have a crisis? Was there like a secret like marriage in their family from Bingo's I know about? A love child.

Bingo's all proud because he says his family came over on the Mayflower, which I think is like sort of racially tinged, honestly. Like I find the whole thing to be problematic. No, I remember before we even had bingo, our friends had a cat named Pretzel and they

adored pretzel pretzel was such a good kitty rest in peace pretzel um but uh they they announce or my friend anita announced that they were getting a dna test for pretzel to find out like what pretzel was you know made up of genetically oh okay and i said well it's just gonna come back and it's gonna say cat like that's that's what you're paying for it's gonna say that pretzel's a cat and like We know that. And about maybe a month later or whatever, we got a text message on the text chain that said Andrew was right. And the results were just like 98% American feline or something like that with like little bits of other things.

It's a good thing it came back as cat, though, because you wouldn't want it to come back as wolf or dog.

That's a really good point. Okay, we got some good news and some bad news. The bad news is pretzel's a bird. the good news is birds live forever and they're dinosaurs um yeah that is true so anyway when we got bingo genevieve was obsessed with bingo's like kind of makeup because we when we picked bingo out like we knew that we were in the process of adopting a cat and so we had heard that there was a a woman who was a vet tech in tacoma and um and she would like kind of foster you know litters of kittens at her home she had a kind of a a bigger kind of countryish home where um she could have a whole room dedicated to like kind of fostering these cats yeah it's a very loving environment and um and so vives and i go and we're like okay we're gonna go kind of assume you know if everything goes well we're gonna pick out our cat today and so we show up and we walk into this room that has probably i think it's like two partial litters of cats in there so i'm gonna say like probably 20 at the most let's say somewhere between 15 and 20 kittens in there i mean that's a dream I mean I don't know how much are you into cats at all uh not really yeah I mean I really feel like I picked the perfect guest for today's show certainly well go ahead being a tv

channel listener we're trained to listen to stuff like you know topics we don't really you know

yeah yeah yeah we normally care about no we're challenging you certainly um but uh so we go in And we see all these cats and like, you know, I like shorter haired cats and I like tabbies and they had some like are the orange cats. Is there something called an orange tabby? I'm not sure. But they had like some orange colored cats, probably like John Ralphio. And like I was immediately sort of like that. That's the kind of cat we want. But Bingo was the only cat who, by the by the way, at the time was not long haired because he was a kitten. But I definitely did not want a long haired cat. And and I'm not somebody who's like especially drawn to Siamese looking cats. but bingo just like immediately started playing with genevieve and like crawled on her lap immediately and then when he got tired he walked over to my lap and fell asleep on my lap yeah yeah there's i mean i was kind of like i like the orange cats but this cat i mean i mean it's as corny as can be but it was like no he kind of picked us i mean he picked us as in we were the humans in the room he would have picked anybody like he's such a human or you know you know he loves humans he loves people such a people cat but like there was no way we're leaving with any cat other than bingo um but all that is to say he was the only siamese looking cat in the whole thing and i don't know if you know this navia but one litter of cats can have different dads did you know this oh actually no i didn't yes so two different male cats can impregnate a female cat and that way you get a bunch of cats that look alike and then a bingo because like bingo bingo did not look like any of his brothers or sisters and uh and yeah and so genevieve got this she's like well i want to know what's going on with bingo and um she you know paid for some dna tests and it came back and it says he's a cat like i i don't i don't honestly i don't remember i wasn't i mean i was i guess i was copied on the emails i just don't remember and i just didn't care that much he was just my bingo cat that's all i need to know right but i've heard with like

the dog dna test like it tells you what kind of dog and it gives you like a breakdown it doesn't

do that for the cats no it does i just don't remember i just you know i mean i think that i think there's a little bit of siamese in there for him and then like in okay but i just don't know what the other ones are and i for some reason i don't care enough and by the way this is not you know people will often like have you know compare cats and dogs or whatever like i'm not I'm not playing that game like I love them both I think cats are easier and we've sort of established ourselves as being a kind of a cat home and if we were to bring in a dog now it would cause too much chaos for our cats so um that's it but it's not because I'm like oh I think cats are better than dogs or vice versa having said that and oh but you cat people are gonna hate this but like for some reason it makes more sense for me with a dog like I don't you know what I mean like not that cats don't all have their own person personalities but like maybe it's because I'm not as familiar with the breeds of cats but it's like literally who cares like literally fair enough who cares whereas if you told me like oh I think I see a little bit of pit in this dog of yours but also like kind of has the personality of a lab or whatever like those things mean things to me you know and I don't even know dogs that well you know so right anyway that's where I am on that where were we uh so we had Lisa's uh very very gentle song to her Siamese looking cat and then how about this one from Jessica who has I

be untrue there's no way that's what i was thinking too i don't know though yeah no i think

You're somebody who cares about sci-fi a great deal. That doesn't mean that you're into all nerd culture, but are you into comic book movies?

Yeah, I, well, I used to watch a lot of the DC cartoons when I was younger. I grew up on a lot of DC stuff. So when the movie universe started, I was so excited. And then I've been disappointed year after year after year.

Starting with what? So would it be like the Christopher Nolan franchise that you started?

That was a good one. Oh, okay. That was when it was really good. Okay, gotcha. It was just like Suicide Squad and like Batman v Superman. What are the other ones? I don't know. They're all just so disappointing, sadly.

I am not deep into that world at all, especially the DC side. I didn't see the one that's like the Batman, who's the Gen Y Batman who played.

Yes, yes, yes, exactly. The vampire. What's his name? I started to watch it. It's got the really slowed down version of like Something in the Way by Nirvana or something, which is already a slow song. So Pattinson, it's something Pattinson.

Listen, I don't know what kind of your expectations are as somebody who's more familiar probably with the source material and everything, but the James Gunn one is so good. It's so, it's both like, it's like, you know, it's action and it's disturbing action at times or whatever, as far as that, as far as like that kind of comic universe will allow. But also it's like really, really beautifully shot. It's like incredible, almost, almost choreographed violence at times. That is like, you're like, this is so beautiful and awful at the same time. I highly, highly recommend it. I had no idea what I was going into. I think Veeves and I saw it in the theater. and I kind of understood that it was sort of a remake with the same name but different and a reshoot and I don't know and I was just absolutely blown away and then that leads to the TV show called The Peacemaker or maybe just called Peacemaker and I'm not sure if you're familiar with that but it's like an extension of and James Gunn is all over that as well literally the opening credits are all of the main characters doing a dance number I'm telling you I think you're going to love it I cannot recommend it enough. Watch them in that order for you and the listeners. Also, the listeners who know better about this stuff know what I'm talking about here.
