The Seahawks and the Browns both looked very good in their season openers yesterday. Sadly, only one of them won. It's okay, though. It's going to be okay.

00:01:06 - 00:01:33 | Speaker 2:

seattle bark will seem like some old my goodness gracious has it has it been how many months eight months nine months has it been enough time that it's once again time to do a tbtl no point conversion And I guess it is. Hi, I'm Luke Burbank right over there. My friend, Andrew Walsh. Hi, Andrew. Hello. I have a cat on my lap. Nice. How did he feel about the Browns game?

00:01:33 - 00:01:40 | Speaker 3:

He was remarkably sanguine throughout, as a matter of fact. I did every now and then. I have a missing board step.

00:01:40 - 00:01:42 | Speaker 2:

Well, that makes one person in that household, I would imagine.

00:01:42 - 00:01:57 | Speaker 3:

You know, we should almost get Durs on the line because I got to say, and he'll probably hear this. I think he's a P1 for the no point. no point P1 he came over here maybe he got here

00:01:57 - 00:02:00 | Speaker 2:

that's a lesser Jedi character right no point P1

00:02:00 - 00:04:15 | Speaker 3:

no point P1 he's a droid but he's still got feelings he led the Jawas but he came over we watched the Seahawks game separately but then he came over to watch a big chunk of the Browns game with me the Browns were I think maybe just wrapping up the first half when he came over and they were winning I would like to point out the Browns until they eventually lost, they were winning for three quarters of this game. Like, never gave up the lead. Scored first on their first drive, never gave up the lead. I was pacing from room to room because I had the game on in two rooms when the conversation got too loud between Andy and Genevieve. I'd go in the other room, and I would watch in there, and I'd swear. And I realized at one point in the third quarter, as I'm standing there, I'd already angrily thrown my good luck Cleveland Browns stress football squeezy thing I have twice to which point Genevieve was going to break up with me if I did it again because I was spilling things and almost broke the TV and that's when they were winning that's when they were winning Luke that's when I had this realization I turned to Andy I said I realized that I'm in a pretty dark place right now and they have never given up the lead in this game yet but it was just so inevitable I knew they would not that they're not I'm not brownsing it out like they were good the Browns played good goddamn football yesterday like some of the best football i've ever seen cleveland browns play but they were playing a really just a once in a generation talent on the in mahomes on the road against a complete team like you just knew they were going to lose the whole time i was i thought i was emotionally ready for it but it was so goddamn heartbreaking the way it ended luke i at one point andy put his hand on my shoulder after it was all over this is maybe like within five minutes of the game ending i went off off myself to be in a room by myself and he put his hand on my shoulder and i didn't even realize i said don't touch me but i did because later on he apologized for touching me and i don't think i was mad at him i think i just my brain was scrambled and it made me think remember your brother one point got your brother at one point said i think i'm going to maybe try to back away from the football continuum a little bit because who am i becoming while i watch it it might have been a little bit like that yesterday well when that

00:04:15 - 00:04:59 | Speaker 2:

game ended i turned to becca we were watching it here uh and i said i'm gonna wait a while to text andrew anything because nothing i say is gonna make it better an attempt at a joke is gonna fall flat an attempt to contextualize it is is just i just knew that that you just needed to be alone you needed to just be no no nobody try to get cute with it or make a joke or anything just let you work it work through it kind of like our friend stew uh the stew bot because like his Minnesota Vikings suffered a really tough Loss in Cincy That went to overtime and then just At the end really didn't break their way either Back to the Browns game it's actually good that this Is the order in which we're doing things so we don't end Like we're getting the kind of really Tough part out of the way first

00:05:00 - 00:06:16 | Speaker 1:

So that we can end talking about the Seahawks game Which obviously went a lot better But you know the thing is when you're playing Kansas City You have to I mean until Probably Probably if it was the second half and you had a 35 point lead you could probably relax Anything under 30 points you just You can't and we've seen it Particularly in the postseason I mean Kansas City Would typically come out somehow Go down by like 25 Points that's a weird number I don't know teams really go down 25 points but you know they go down like four scores and then they just come roaring back like that's just there so you just kind of know at some point that's going to happen and so there was a sort of a bit of an inevitability there but I will say I thought that the Browns played really well and looked like a really strong really complete football team like you already said they just played probably one of the NFL's top three teams at home and when you play one of the nfl's top three teams at home you're probably going to lose where the all the other top nfl teams andrew the fucking nfc west what are we going to do about this division there is not one team from the nfc west yesterday that did not look incredibly strong how did we wake up in the

00:06:16 - 00:06:41 | Speaker 2:

toughest division in football i know i mean luckily the seahawks look sharp too i mean that's what's Yeah, but I mean, they didn't squeak one out. They played pretty dominantly. But I heard that, like, didn't Arizona, like, I didn't see this, but Durs kind of commented that, like, Arizona just, like, put a whooping on, well, my old, my old teammate, Mike Rabel's Titans. That's right. But I don't know if the Titans, are the Titans supposed to be good, though?

00:06:41 - 00:07:29 | Speaker 1:

I don't know. You know, I have to be honest with you. There's a new thing in the NFL this year. I mean, well, maybe it's not new, but it seems like it was sort of there was more of it going on where teams really were not playing their starters in the postseason or excuse me, the preseason. It used to be the first game, you know, the starters would play the first quarter or maybe the first. Yeah, the first quarter would be the starters. And then they bring in the guys trying to make the team. And in the second game, maybe no starters at all. And then the third game, the starters play the first quarter and the first set of downs in the second quarter. And then the final preseason game, the starters play the full first half. You kind of got, like, to see what was going on. They don't do that anymore. I think there was, like, some—I forget the exact number. I want to say it was, like, 14 NFL quarterbacks took zero preseason snaps.

00:07:29 - 00:07:34 | Speaker 2:

And they reduced the number of games to three as well. So that plays into—

00:07:34 - 00:08:40 | Speaker 1:

And so, like, Russell Wilson didn't take any snaps in the preseason, unless I'm mistaken. And so I just—I kind of checked out of preseason football because— Well, I do like to watch hard knocks. But other than that, it's like I'm not super intrigued by meaningless games played by a bunch of people who probably aren't going to make the squad. So all of that is to say, I don't know what's going on with Tennessee. I don't know what's going on with a lot of these teams. What I do know, though, is that we are in a very, very tough division. San Francisco is good again. They've got all their folks back. Arizona is Kyler Murray looks really tough. we saw you know we saw the Rams last night just giving it to the Bears um although that game was kind of weird to me because until the very like on paper it looked like a huge blowout but the Bears had more first downs and if not for a couple of critical errors the Bears were really in that game but anyway just the teams in our division are really good and the Seahawks looked the Seahawks looked strong but I mean it's just gonna be a it's gonna be a bloodbath in the NFC West this year

00:08:40 - 00:09:23 | Speaker 2:

Yeah. And so, I mean, to look at that division and see that, you know, all the teams are 1-0, I'm sorry to go back to this. It's a real bummer that the Browns, who look really good, are going to probably, we'll find out after tonight's Ravens-Raiders game, my guess is Ravens take that game and the Browns start off as being the only team that doesn't win a week one. And so we're already already starting at the very bottom of the AFC North. But, yeah, the NFC West thing is I know it's tough. And I got to say, like, whatever, like my heart doesn't bleed for the Seahawks the way it bleeds. Or what did you one time say? I bleed for you. Maybe I don't bleed. I don't bleed for the Seahawks quite as much as I know you're bleeding for me.

00:09:23 - 00:09:28 | Speaker 1:

If I if I headbutted you in a parking lot of a Chinese food restaurant, that's when you're not.

00:09:28 - 00:09:44 | Speaker 2:

Then I bleed for you when the Browns headbutt me on a Sunday afternoon. I bleed for them. And I would say that while I root for the Seahawks, I don't have that. I don't have the maybe the I don't like to say it, but the insanity that I have around the Browns. Right.

00:09:44 - 00:09:47 | Speaker 1:

You would not throw your Seahawks stress football two times.

00:09:48 - 00:09:48 | Speaker 2:

Exactly.

00:09:49 - 00:09:52 | Speaker 1:

And risk Genevieve breaking up with you the way you would your Browns stress football.

00:09:52 - 00:10:13 | Speaker 2:

Yeah. So all of that is to say all of that is just to say that it's fun. from my perspective perspective yeah i hate to say it but it's kind of cool yeah i mean the the seahawks look really good in a really good conference it should be a fun season the nfc west outscored its opponents

00:10:13 - 00:12:09 | Speaker 1:

141 to 76 jesus yesterday yeah i mean let's talk about the seahawks a little bit uh i am the eternal optimist uh with this team so i always imagine this is how it's going to go and uh and And yet even I was sort of pleasantly surprised at how sort of in the flow we looked. I mean, a lot has been made of this new offensive coordinator, Shane Waldron, certainly looked yesterday like the plays that were drawn up really worked for Russell Wilson. Russell Wilson had his second highest quarterback rating of his career, which is interesting because he also didn't throw that many passes, which is great. Because what I think that indicates it, I mean, he threw four touchdowns and he didn't have to throw that many passes because we were leading. So then we could run. And then Chris Carson looked really good on the ground. One one little sort of caveat for me is I don't know enough about Indy. You know, I don't know if we how we will have to see how good Indy is. Yes, that has a lot to do with how how kind of confident we can feel about that victory. Did we just go in and play a good game against a team that's ultimately not going to be real great? I mean, I am still always, if a team has Carson Wentz, I tend to think they've got a good chance because Carson Wentz has had some really amazing, you know, games in his career. And when I realized, because I had forgotten that they had Wentz, when I realized they had Wentz, I was like, oh, this could be kind of bad for us because Wentz can be effective at times. But, of course, they managed to sort of put pressure on him yesterday, which was also a really amazing thing to see, a Seahawks team that actually has a pretty good pass rush. Yeah, that actually can pressure the quarterback. All of it seems to really well. Rasheem Green had an incredibly productive game, as did Dunlap that I couldn't have known at the time that the addition of Carlos Dunlap last year would be such a I mean, that was really when our defense went from historically bad to actually fairly decent. Do you remember that?

00:12:09 - 00:12:17 | Speaker 2:

I do, kind of vaguely, but I do remember his name when everybody – because that was a – he came over from somewhere, correct? From Cincy. Yeah, that's right, Cincinnati, yeah.

00:12:18 - 00:13:35 | Speaker 1:

And I was like, you know, I didn't know a ton – I mean, I had heard his name before, and I knew that, you know, some people sort of thought he still had a little gas in the tank. But I was like – I mean, that was when our defense was just getting absolutely clobbered. And I'm like, great, we're picking up somebody that Cincy doesn't care about. Well, that's going to be – that's really going to help. Or maybe we traded for him. But anyway, just didn't seem it seems sort of classic John Schneider and Pete Carroll, which is like they just don't usually go out and do a lot of flashy stuff. Maybe if you don't count like Jamal Adams or something, it seems like they're usually trying to just put lipstick on some pigs. But, man, when he got here, things really seem to change. And that just seems to continue to roll on. Like and what we were able to do in getting some pressure on Wentz is we were able to also drop some guys back in coverage because I guess this is according to a text from Durs. And I don't know where he got this info, but he's actually pretty up to speed on this stuff. I guess the idea is that our secondary doesn't look super strong. But if you can drop enough people back in coverage, you can kind of make up for that. Like in years past, the problem has been we had to put everybody up on the line because we couldn't get pressure. So we'd have to blitz everyone and therefore put our secondary in single coverage. And then our secondary wasn't good. So then they could just pass to whoever they wanted to back there. Based on yesterday, it looks like this defense is fairly stout.

00:13:35 - 00:14:15 | Speaker 2:

Yeah, and I'm just going to repeat what you said to begin this thought, but I had the same exact thought when we were starting the show today. I was thinking, we don't really, like, in probably four weeks, or maybe in three weeks, we will know how big of a victory this was over Indianapolis, right? Like then then we'll know what actually happened yesterday. But it looked really good. And again, it seems like the main headline is it was a decisive victory. It was a victory that the I mean, Seahawks fans needed something like this, not this like, you know, that you're you're better, but you're making really stupid mistakes and you're going to keep on. You're making it way closer than it needs to be. It was a nice, comfortable win. I almost wonder if people were bored.

00:14:16 - 00:14:23 | Speaker 1:

I was. Well, this is Andrew. This is the beauty of sports betting. I was riveted because we needed to win by more than seven points.

00:14:24 - 00:14:25 | Speaker 2:

Well, congratulations.

00:14:25 - 00:15:14 | Speaker 1:

Thank you very much. I lost some of it on the Bears, but that's fine. I still ended up net positive for the day. Yeah, I'll tell you what. Having Chris Carson healthy feels like a big deal. And you never know how much stock to put in this because the announcers, I feel like the announcers just say crazy shit. And they never really know what they're talking about. Hey, that sounds like the no point. But, like, they were saying that Pete Carroll had said Chris Carson had his best camp ever. It's like everyone's always had their best camp ever. Have you noticed that? When someone does well on the field, the announcers will go, we were just. talking to uh you know we were just talking to Pete Carroll and he just said you know this was definitely Rashad Penny's best camp he's ever had and I'm like okay oh speaking of do you know we had a moment yesterday where Rashad Penny and Penny Hart were both out with injuries yeah I

00:15:14 - 00:15:27 | Speaker 2:

heard the announcers talking about it they were trying to come up with something clever um and they weren't quite coming up with it but they were like two pennies out I'm like maybe say a couple of bad pennies I don't know there was something there that they were dancing around and they

00:15:27 - 00:16:23 | Speaker 1:

didn't land i mean listen i i we'll see what happens i didn't look at anything today on like what the status of rashad penny's thing is but man there's probably a point at which unfortunately it's like rashad penny may the seahawks and rashad penny may have to come to the the unavoidable conclusion that his physical body is not meant to be in an nfl game Like I mean It's like the Swallows Returning to San Juan Capistrano Every year Rashad Penny Has one good play in which he also Ruptures something He runs it for 30 yards unexpectedly And we're like holy shit it's happening And then it's like Penny limping off the field Going to the tent He appears to Be talented but he also Always gets hurt And you know I mean luckily We've got Carson as of right now Who had the best camp he's ever had According to Pete Carroll

00:16:23 - 00:16:36 | Speaker 2:

He is fun to watch man I think you texted out at one point Early on I think in the first quarter You said that something looked almost beast mode-y And he just does have that kind of energy He just does And I love it

00:16:36 - 00:16:59 | Speaker 1:

I also feel like Russell was Mostly Had a fairly clean pocket Again this is a question about What's going to happen when we go up against Aaron Donald that'll be a very different story but I mean I had heard I'd read somewhere that the Seahawks have kind of uh the thought is that their offensive line is better

00:16:59 - 00:17:09 | Speaker 2:

this year than it's been in years past um because because Russell like pushed for that right he was making a lot of noise and so they they said fine we'll bolster the line isn't that kind of the

00:17:09 - 00:19:21 | Speaker 1:

cliff notes on that I mean I knew that Russell you remember Russell's people yeah we're saying he was unhappy but then i don't know i guess i don't know enough about like how offensive lines work or who is good or bad in an offensive line unless it's like hey we just redrafted orlando pace what like except for like a handful of offensive linemen whose names i know because they were like so it's like we got lincoln kennedy back like i just don't know what makes an offensive line good and i didn't hear any big news that made me think that management had given russell Wilson what he wanted right like I didn't see them go out and go look what we got you this big guy that's gonna block your blind side but but that's just owing to my lack of understanding like who is a good offensive lineman in the NFL but as of yesterday or at least based on yesterday it looked pretty decent I mean he got flushed a couple of times I I feel like I mean that game ended up seeming like it was a bit of a walk but I swear there was a couple of critical moments that really like one of them was the first drive so after we let them go the entire length of the field and get a field goal i think then we come out and we end up very quickly on offense in like a third and nine or something and russell gets flushed but he scrambles for like oh yeah 12 and i swear to god that was a huge play just to kind of not not to go three and out you know because you never know it's a very weird game it's very momentumy and you know that would have been a lot of momentum for them so anyway I guess my point is Russell seemed like he wasn't under total duress and then when he was he read the field beautifully I mean that first Tyler Lockett touchdown was such a I mean was such a thing of beauty because they just like you know they went I was that called cover zero like they basically brought everybody and they're about to tackle Russell he just throws that moon ball that Tyler Lockett is like can you imagine being in an NFL game looking over your left shoulder and then realizing I gotta go over my right shoulder now I would have I would have vertigo for a month from that physical movement of just switching my head to the other shoulder just relocating the ball catching it NBD I you mentioned earlier that Russell did have to

00:19:21 - 00:20:00 | Speaker 2:

scramble that one time and then did so beautifully and got the first down plus I mean he covered a lot of yards i can't remember exactly but i can sort of see it in my mind's eye um what i liked about that is i feel like the past two seasons has been this like this game of people whispering in his ear that he needs to be more conservative and we didn't see that kind of we didn't see him take the ball into his own hands in that particular manner until the fourth quarter after playing conservatively it led them to a point where they were going to be screwed if russell didn't just do that constantly in right and play after play after play in the fourth quarter like somehow I don't know if it's the new offensive court

00:20:00 - 00:20:19 | Speaker 1:

coordinator or or what it is but he everybody just seemed comfortable and that he was allowed to do what needed to be done in that situation I think that was one of the most frustrating things in the past couple of years was just seeing this like almost like tamp it almost seemed like a tamping down of Russell's talents until the fourth quarter when it was sometimes too late and ugly

00:20:19 - 00:22:16 | Speaker 2:

well because classically I guess the you know the tension on the team or whatever is Pete Carroll always wants to be a run first offense that's that's supposedly the thing that Pete Carroll really wants and so i think in the past you know past seasons we would try to run particularly if carson wasn't healthy or if we just weren't having an effective day we would just get ourselves behind the sticks a ton we're just trying to run trying to run not getting anywhere with it and then you know suddenly it's the fourth quarter and now we're down by by a couple scores and now russell has to just like try to bail us out which he did a shockingly high percentage of the time but yesterday felt like the running game was working so we were like moving the ball effectively But then, of course, once the running game starts working, then that play action really works on the defense. And, yeah, yesterday just felt like a very balanced attack. You know what else I loved? Not just because it had a great outcome, but because it completely blindsided me was that play at the end of the first half, the second play to lock it, the bomb of, like, whatever it was, 75 yards. That is so out of character for the Seattle Seahawks. That's got to be Shane Waldron, right? It was second and 20 with, what, 40 seconds left? That is prime check-down time for this Seattle Seahawks team. I feel like I've seen them check it down from, like, their own 50 in that situation. I'm always, you know, I'm a fan, so I'm always like, come on, just try to throw it to DK. And you just see it, like, Russell, like, do a delayed handoff to DJ Dallas or some shit. And it's like, what? I was saying to Becca, I was like, well, here we go, second and 20. This is just going to be us not trying. And I almost feel like that was almost a trick play that they went for that because I'd have to think that Indy was also thinking, based on the Seahawks' general vibe, like, oh, well, they're not going to throw a 75-yard pass here. They're just going to throw a screen pass or hand it off and just run the clock out and go into halftime up by whatever they were and be happy about it.

00:22:16 - 00:22:39 | Speaker 1:

Yeah, and the fact that it was successful is so huge there in the first game of the season, right? Because, I mean, just for the player's confidence level, but then also the coach's confidence level, right? And, again, you can't do – by definition, you cannot do that all the time. But if you have that in your back pocket and everybody feels good about it, then that's just so good to happen in the first game.

00:22:40 - 00:22:57 | Speaker 2:

Yes, I agree 100%. And, again, I feel like that has to be the new offensive coordinator. Now, I don't know if it's just like he feels like he's more allowed to do his thing than I've already forgotten. Was it Daryl Bevel or something?

00:22:57 - 00:23:02 | Speaker 1:

Bevel was two ago or was Bevel last year? I already forgot. Maybe it was two ago. I don't know. You lose track.

00:23:02 - 00:23:40 | Speaker 2:

But like I don't know if the previous – the sense I have is like – and I don't know if this is even true. But the sense I have is like Pete Carroll is generally being like let's just manage the game. That seems to be in my mind kind of what he wants to do. Let's manage the game, i.e. let's run the ball. let's check down when in doubt let's you know let's play the field position game you know I Pete Carroll seems to really hate to go for it on fourth down a lot of times when I think he should so I to me that that that 75 yard play at that point of the game feels like the offensive coordinator called it and Pete didn't overrule it maybe that's maybe that shows a trust between

00:23:40 - 00:24:41 | Speaker 1:

them too I don't know what right Carroll's relationship was um it was Schottenheimer the last three seasons. And then it was beveled forever before that. But Schottenheimer, yeah, that was a disappointing experiment with him. So, yeah, and now if there's a better relationship between Pete and Shane Waldron, that's pretty cool. And, of course, it's also kind of exciting. And, again, I don't follow this stuff that closely, but the idea that Shane is coming off of the Rams-McVay, right? And there can be a misconception. Maybe I even got this from one of those why your team sucks articles in Defector, but like that idea that like, oh, yeah, anybody who had anything to do with McVay's Rams offenses, we're all just going to assume as a genius in and of themselves. And that obviously may not always be the case. But we saw some pretty just again, I use this for both the Browns and the Seahawks yesterday, just like some pretty sparkling, sharp offense. Yes, definitely.

00:24:41 - 00:25:00 | Speaker 2:

like there was a fly sweep they did that i really liked that very much reminded me of a rams play i actually think and i don't want to like get you know i don't want to get overly uh rosy after one game but another thing to think about is like the rams did have a lot of uh weapons and they would score a lot and they were

00:25:00 - 00:25:59 | Speaker 1:

considered to be a pretty incredible you know offensive team and they did all that with jared goof who i don't think is even you know it should hold uh you know russell wilson's gatorade bottle so if you have you know shane waldron somebody who was kind of orchestrating a lot of this and then you pair him with someone who is as talented and smart as russell wilson is it makes me think and and you know it's really funny i like forgot how good our receivers are Because I don't know why Because I guess it's like it's weird It's like when it's your own team Or something like When I think of like oh top flight receivers I'm thinking of like Odell Beckham Jr. Or Julio Jones Or you know what are the other The other you know sort of Big DeAndre Hopkins There's like a lot of these other receivers That are like the premier big money receivers And I sort of forget that like DK Metcalf puts up huge numbers Tyler Lockett puts up huge numbers Also, Gerald Everett, welcome to the team.

00:25:59 - 00:26:05 | Speaker 2:

I literally said, who just scored that touchdown? Did you know? I guess you probably followed maybe the offseason a little closer than I did.

00:26:06 - 00:26:14 | Speaker 1:

I didn't know that we had gotten this Gerald Everett dude, and it was supposed to be kind of a big deal. It was also nice to see Will Disley out there also not getting hurt.

00:26:14 - 00:27:25 | Speaker 2:

I love watching him out there. I think that he can be such a good weapon when, you know, again, when used, you know, correctly as he was yesterday. You can't target him all the time, but when you do, he's like a little tank out there. I really love that. And DK, I mean, you talk about OBJ. I would trade you – I would make that trade in a second. I also think that OBJ has some – I think OBJ has some sort of – not issues personality-wise, but some sort of issues with the Browns' offense, or he just doesn't have chemistry with Baker. I was actually arguing that. Was he hurt yesterday? Yeah, he ended last season severely injured. I thought that would run out his contract with the Browns, and we wouldn't see him in a Browns uniform again. Apparently, he will come back later in the season, potentially as early as next week. But I was telling Vives and Durs, and Durs kind of, I think, hinted that I'm wrong about this. But I don't know, man. OBJ and Baker just have never really connected the way you want him to. I think that he's so much more valuable as an asset to get to trade away for something because other teams would drool over that. And for some reason, it just doesn't seem like the OBJ Brown's experiment is working that well.

00:27:25 - 00:28:10 | Speaker 1:

And also, that is a real thing. I think I sometimes think that this locker room culture or chemistry or whatever is overstated because sports journalism, particularly for football, is just six days of nothing happening and trying to come up with something. And then one day the thing happens, and then you've got six more days to fill. But that being said, I do think between quarterback and receiver, chemistry is a thing. And it's weird how you will sometimes get, I mean, Jimmy Graham, I mean, he did manage to catch some touchdowns, but I don't think Jimmy Graham was ever a really strong fit here, even though at the time we got him, he was arguably maybe the best tight end in football or certainly one of them. He had a great relationship with Drew Brees. That's just how it goes. Sometimes a receiver who's less heralded will have crazy numbers with a particular quarterback because they just vibe. Yeah, exactly.

00:28:10 - 00:29:01 | Speaker 2:

And I will say that I think OBJ and Baker like each other. I don't think it's an issue. There was a little bit, you know, OBJ is a drama queen, so he threw some fits on the sidelines. But I don't think they were ever directed towards the quarterback, which is good. There was a quote, I don't know if I read this, or I was listening to a little bit of the Browns Post game show yesterday, but Miles Garrett, who I just couldn't love more, said, and I know that, of course, he's on the defense, but I think it was him who was saying something like, yeah number six aka Baker Mayfield like he's our man we follow him anywhere and it really sounds like the Browns not only have a lot of talent right now I'm sorry I keep bringing it back there but not only have a lot of talent right now but also have a lot of good chemistry in the locker room like it really seems like they're not there's no infighting there's no weirdness Baker has matured he's not saying dumb shit in front of the press anymore like it's just it really it just

00:29:01 - 00:29:10 | Speaker 1:

feels good yeah I think that that was a really good performance I don't think that the Seahawks go in and beat that Kansas City team either, you know? I don't think so.

00:29:10 - 00:29:19 | Speaker 2:

I mean, that's a really tough—you said one of the top three. I would—arguably the top, maybe not when you count Tom Brady's Tompa Bay.

00:29:20 - 00:29:42 | Speaker 1:

Tompa Bay, but peace and love to our Tompa listeners. But it's just like, I mean, I don't know. I mean, I don't think Tom Brady is a bad human being. I don't think Rob Gronkowski is a bad human being. But I just there's just something about Tampa bringing in these hired guns and then getting the win. I don't know. It just feels so astroturfy to me.

00:29:42 - 00:29:57 | Speaker 2:

I know. I mean, yeah, I don't know. It sort of does, although isn't that what every team's kind of trying to do, except they're they're they're like that movie Red, right? Retired and extremely dangerous. Isn't that what Red stands for? And it's like all the former action stars like come together and they're.

00:29:57 - 00:29:59 | Speaker 1:

Yeah, this is already more about that film than I would expect.

00:30:00 - 00:30:22 | Speaker 2:

to know I've never seen it I only know I think I know that much about it because my cat Theo when he used to wear a collar all the time but then he got to a certain age and we decided not to make him wear a collar all the time we started referring to him as retired and then Genevieve said he's retired and extremely dangerous and that's how I learned yeah well I mean I guess the reason that

00:30:22 - 00:31:59 | Speaker 1:

it frustrates me and it could I mean it didn't start off great there like in you know the other thing doesn't help is that they've added antonio brown yes so you see antonio brown get a critical catch and i'm not putting gronk in league with him but like it's like you're talking about a team a city that like whereas i think this is easy for me to say because it's my team but it's like we drafted russell wilson we drafted him and he was unheralded so at least when tom brady was at in boston i was like i don't love mass holes i don't love patriots culture but they came by tom brady honestly they drafted him they saw something in him and he took over for an injured what's his name drew bledsoe bledsoe yeah so it was like but the the tampa deal is more like oh we go out we find bruce arians we bring him out of retirement this is starting to sound like the plot of that movie it really is we get we get tom brady who we think has maybe two good seasons left and we overpay him and get him out of boston we get he calls gronk and brings gronk out of retirement We get Antonio Brown, who should be in jail, and bring him in because we have no morals. And then, yeah, and then it also happens to be the Super Bowls at our stadium that year. And, I mean, now, granted, I guess there weren't fans, so that was kind of sort of unlucky. But, like, I don't know. It just felt very – like, AstroTurfy versus a team that has, like – I mean, Mike Evans is the only Tompa guy that comes to mind that feels like – I mean, Mike Evans has been there forever. Maybe they even drafted him. I don't know. Again, peace and love to our listeners in Tampa. If I lived there and I had that team and they won the Super Bowl, I would be totally hyped. So I want to say this is all just coming from my own frustration about the Seahawks not winning the Super Bowl last year.

00:32:00 - 00:32:32 | Speaker 2:

I know this is like the most cliche sports radio place to take this, but is it starting to look more and more like we might be getting the answer of whether it was Belichick's magic or Tom Brady's? Because I see that the Dolphins won yesterday. Like, when was the last time the Dolphins beat the Patriots in week one? I would love to see that stat because that must be a I mean, based on my somewhat ignorant knowledge of the history of that division, that must it must have been like the early 90s or something. Right.

00:32:32 - 00:34:10 | Speaker 1:

Well, I think it happened last year. Maybe not. Oh, it did. Oh, OK. Never mind. But but no, no, that's also because Tompa was gone. Yeah. Right. But that's the thing, though. Yeah. Right. Right. Yeah, I think you're totally right. Like, I think what has been – I mean, what has been exposed is that Bill Belichick is still a pretty phenomenal coach, but he cannot do it with just any – give me any 11 guys and put them on the field and I will Belichick them into a winning – even though that game was pretty close. I think it was like 17-16 or something. That's what the final is here, but I have no idea what actually happened. I think it was pretty close, but, you know, their start, they have this new Mac Jones, I think, is the, is the, the Mac, Mac Jones, is that his name? The quarterback that, you know, they, they cut Cam Newton, which is, which is interesting. Cam Newton is such an enigma to me because to see him on the field, I mean, the guy is just such a physical specimen. He's so strong and he is, you know, so fast and can really do some amazing things. And for it to be like the NFL is like, nah, we don't need Cam Newton. I mean, he also has made some really boneheaded plays and has some kind of personality things that aren't great, it would seem. But just the idea that he's not good enough to be an NFL quarterback is wild. It's also interesting to see the Jameis Winston reclamation project going on in New Orleans. Boy, they just stomped the living tweedle out of Green Bay. I know. Like, man, did you see our friend Stu's tweet with the Aaron Rodgers press postgame? I don't think so. Did you happen to see Aaron Rodgers' post-game presser? He's got really long hair now.

00:34:10 - 00:34:13 | Speaker 2:

Yes, yes. What did he compare? So he has his hair.

00:34:13 - 00:34:22 | Speaker 1:

His hair is long, and it's like slicked back in a ponytail, I think. And he had a leather-type jacket on. And I think Stu said, when you cannot comment, when you cannot officially comment about the incident at your dojo.

00:34:22 - 00:34:31 | Speaker 2:

Oh, no, I didn't see that. I saw a different one. There is another one with that same photo that I want to share with you when I can call it up here. It was a quality spoof from our friend the StuBot.

00:34:31 - 00:34:59 | Speaker 1:

That's great. Yeah, I mean, that's – who knows? it also just shows you again we know nothing about sports um but it's just who knows green bay could bounce back and they could go 16 and 1 and we could all just be thinking remember when we thought green bay wasn't good i don't know if they're good or bad but it's funny when they go around the horn on like the fox pregame show and they're like who are you picking in your divisions and it's like whomever is like the packers there and then you just go out and just get absolutely He throttled and you're like, no.

00:35:00 - 00:35:39 | Speaker 2:

It's like, really, Terry Bradshaw? Really? But, you know, again, who knows? That's why I bet on the Bears last night, because everyone on the NBC pregame had picked the Rams. and in my experience when you get 100 unanimity that one team has no chance being on the field with the other team i swear to god it feels to me like more often than not the team that's given no chance somehow weirdly actually wins um this was not the case it turned out they all knew something which was that the you know andy dalton is probably not going to be leading your team on the road to

00:35:39 - 00:35:57 | Speaker 1:

any uh you know over good teams any big victories i don't know who this person is i just sent this tweet to you cj fogler says aaron rogers looks like an undercover cop accused of planting evidence and the photo that goes along with it is just very much so yes yeah you know what's kind of

00:35:57 - 00:37:01 | Speaker 2:

funny is that um or interesting i guess to me is that you i always was sort of neutral on aaron Rodgers and like you've always kind of been not a fan and Stu is obviously as a Vikings is very much not a fan I'm kind of coming around to your thing a little bit in just that I mean it's not easy to to lose whatever was 35 to 3 and then go to a press conference but I just I don't know he just he just seems like he's I I used to think he had a certain bit of kind of equanimity to him or kind of, I don't know how to describe it, but there used to be a certain lightness to Aaron Rodgers at times, not when he's complaining on the field about a call, but you know, just generally that I thought was kind of winning and I didn't see any of that yesterday. He just pissed, it's like there's all this off-season shit, which now everyone is assuming means something. Going into the game, everyone was like it means nothing! He told Aaron Andrews he doesn't care, and we're picking the pack to win their division, and then after the game it was like the Packers are the worst team in football.

00:37:01 - 00:37:09 | Speaker 1:

probably the truth is somewhere in the middle sure yeah absolutely yeah i've just always kind of seen them as a bit of a powder but um i don't need to bum out our green bay fans our beloved

00:37:09 - 00:37:40 | Speaker 2:

you know what was kind of nice about yesterday being football times was that i didn't even notice that the seattle mariners were losing a second game oh i got that news right as the browns were losing oh good oh wow what's a not to be glib but it's a wonder you're here my friend we're all glad to have you that's a lot of it's a lot of bad sports news for one andrew um i will tell you a bit of good news fingers crossed go twins they are beating the yankees in the top of the eighth as we're recording this that would be helpful i mean i will be in the stands tonight

00:37:40 - 00:37:47 | Speaker 1:

by the way at uh safe not safe go field to t-mobile park to watch them lose to the red

00:37:47 - 00:38:12 | Speaker 2:

socks but i um am i'm gonna choose to um hope all things and believe all things that we might be able to beat the beat the red socks that would be pretty cool i really like as much as i I'm afraid to like let my heart get broken again my feeling about the Mariners I'm by way bringing this up because this is you know only a few weeks of this no point that we'll probably be talking about the Mariners um in that they're what are they two games out or

00:38:12 - 00:38:27 | Speaker 1:

they fall another game by losing my you know I haven't looked at the wild cards I'll look it up but my guess is by by losing these two GD games to the worst team in baseball I my guess is that that gap has expanded a bit let me look probably and it's also weird because

00:38:27 - 00:39:36 | Speaker 2:

there are like 40 teams that are all within two games of the wild cards it's just real kind of moving target thing um but it looks like yeah i can't quite figure this out um uh where we fall yeah we are three three lost two yeah you really want to try to if you can you want to try to give a couple over to the d-backs yeah but anyway what i was about to say was i treat all of the fact that we're even talking about the mayor's that i'm even like turning this game on tonight that's gravy man considering the expectations going in like if you ask me right now do i think we're actually going to get hot and somehow play our way into the wild card my guess is no i just don't see that happening there's just too many teams in too tight of contention who have better players than us but we weren't even supposed to be 500 this year so the fact that we are fun differential is what it is and that we're still relevant that's really all i ever ask of my baseball team well that's not true i would like to win a world series but also just being relevant in september

00:39:36 - 00:41:01 | Speaker 1:

is a real gift yeah i don't think that i've ever had this experience as a mariners fan and i've been pretty mariners obsessed this entire season and i've never had it last this long um into football season because they were just out of the conversation by the time football season began and And I, you know, I'm pretty frustrated at them right now after dropping those last two games. That's pretty, pretty. inexcusable it just is I also think this is a team that can surprise and I don't want to get my hopes up not I'm not getting my hopes up at all for the playoffs like you say like I do not think it's actually going to happen but I will follow it until they are you know actually out of the running and right now they are still in the running and I could even see them I could knock on wood or whatever but like I could see them taking this series from from the Red Sox here at home like they they could I mean they do that they're kind of like the like the uh Seahawks used to be too like sometimes they play up sometimes they play down sometimes they sweep the rays you know like it has sometimes they get swept by the tigers um so you know like you never know what's going to happen with this with the the Mariners but it has been so much fun this has been my favorite season as a Mariners fan ever and I think I always get a lot of you know I'm always i've kind of always believed in general manager jerry's vision and i've kind of been drinking the kool-aid i don't think you're supposed to say that anymore um it wasn't kool-aid though

00:41:01 - 00:41:15 | Speaker 2:

do you know that little dazzling dude what was it it was an off-brand because they were too they didn't have the money to buy kool-aid so they bought the like generic thing so poor kool-aid's gotten a real bad rap over that whole jonestown situation it wasn't even them it was like some

00:41:15 - 00:42:18 | Speaker 1:

other kind of aid they're doing fine anyway um yeah it's been a really really fun season and And also, you're right, they're a little bit better than they were supposed to be, or they're probably a lot better than they were predicted to be this year. Although I thought that people were underestimating them, and I am very excited about next year. This isn't just a, oh, there's always next year. No, there is a plan in place, and we as an organization, we, I don't know how I got involved in this, have been following that plan. And so far, Jerry DiPoto is kind of delivering what he says we're supposed to deliver. And, you know, 2022 was supposed to be, you know, our goals for next year were originally supposed to be for this year. The pandemic and the lack of a minor league season last year pushed everything back a year. But we're following this roadmap, and I am very excited for next year. If next season we are not in the postseason, I will be very angry. Like, we need to be in the postseason next year, and they need to, like, we have this nice, young, talented team. And supposedly they're going to actually spend some money For next season so that we can also Bring in some big name talent and get it done

00:42:18 - 00:44:14 | Speaker 2:

Yeah it's been It's been fun for them too And they just you're right that the pattern with them Is so weird because we've had seasons In the last like four or five seasons with the Mariners where Remember when they were at like 25 games over at the all-star Break and then ended up you know like Under 500 and it just kept being like Can they build up a big enough Cushion that they won't And, of course, they didn't. And there have been a lot of versions of how they've not succeeded. But this one has been actually really fun because they'll lose a game. It'll be a heartbreaker like that Houston game where they gave up a two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth and then lost in extra innings that was just so gutting. But then they come back and win. They will lose these games that just leave you totally devastated and you're like, I hate them. I'm never watching again. Then they come back and win two games. It's so weird. I mean, the thing I will say is, yeah, I hope we beat Boston, but it's like we can't at this point, we can't win series. We got to go on a like the movie Major League style hot streak, you know, where we just are slowly taking items of clothing off of a poster of Jerry DePoto. And like just being like, you know, sticking it to whatever nefarious forces are trying to run our team out of town. Like, this has to be cinematic at this point. And the problem is, like, when we did that in 95, that team had, you know, Randy Johnson pitching and Ken Griffey Jr. And Edgar Martinez and Alex Rodriguez. Like, that was a loaded team. This team, I think, has a lot of promise and is fun. But it's like most of the hitters are hitting below 250. So it's I don't know if we can catch that kind of like lightning in a bottle. But maybe I don't know. I mean, again, the fact that it's even a conversation here on the September the 13th is I feel like that is far exceeding my expectations.

00:44:14 - 00:44:59 | Speaker 1:

Yeah, absolutely. And I definitely want to. Yeah, we need an ace is what we need, because, I mean, we got we got our answer on Kikuchi. Right. Like that that contract will not be extended. He's really I mean, I feel I feel bad for the guy. Like I really like you say Kikuchi. And he had such a good promising first half of the season. But really, it was an all star. Yeah, that's right. And has ended the season really ignominiously, is that it? And, you know, we have this young Logan Gilbert who has exceeded expectations. I'm really excited about him. Marco is pretty unstable these days. We have another really, like, highly anticipated pitcher in the minors whose name I can't think of who I think it was.

00:45:00 - 00:45:05 | Speaker 3:

start to see next year but i think we need we need to bring in like a veteran ace to lead the

00:45:05 - 00:46:01 | Speaker 2:

pitching staff next year i think i will say though that the like the the we got to wrap this up but i will say that the the kind of even though i feel like we a lot of their averages are not particularly gaudy like i like our i like our lineup in terms of like you know i love jp crawford i think ty france has been i mean ty france has been pretty incredible in second half who to thunk Kyle Seager would be like almost have the most home runs post all-star break like I you know I don't know if Kyle Seager is going to come back and hit 30 home runs next year but it's like I feel pretty good and Hannah Goat is Hannah Goat I feel pretty good about our like one through seven hitters so if the young ones just get better if the Ty Francis and the Kalanix of the world just really start to catch fire next year yeah I think it's going to be a fun season but also it's fun that I'm going to watch this Red Sox game tonight and probably get super angry and probably be texting mean things and tweeting mean things about them and and who knows maybe they'll win i mean

00:46:01 - 00:46:17 | Speaker 3:

it could happen yeah it could happen i hope so i'm going to be there it's going to be chilly too i just pulled out my pea coat it's going to i'm sure when the sun goes down it's going to be pretty cold out there um but also i want to say that i'd like chris flexing as well even though i know that yes collapse kind of had an implosion i like it just because i can say when he pitches

00:46:17 - 00:46:47 | Speaker 2:

well weird flexing but okay just that alone makes me happy so right all right uh that's going to do it for the maiden voyage of this this season's no point conversion thanks for listening everybody we're gonna be back here next week with some version of this maybe Monday maybe a different day but we'll you know we'll keep talking sports as long as you'll keep listening sports and after that and long after all right this is the part of the show where I try to remember how we

00:46:47 - 00:46:53 | Speaker 3:

end it should we do have an ending I forgot about that I thought you just say goodbye do you have the right do you have the music do you have the music Jake, I'm hovering on that. We're ready to go there.

00:46:53 - 00:47:00 | Speaker 2:

I believe we say, what is it, no tangent too long? And no detail too wrong. Hey, we did it. Hey.

00:47:06 - 00:47:26 | Speaker 1:

No matter what you are, I will always be with you. Doesn't matter what you do, girl, we'll go with you. No matter what you do

00:47:26 - 00:47:29 | Unknown:

I will always be
