conversion for you busy sports weekend I'm Luke Burbank by the way that's Andrew Walsh right over there i feel like my voice was getting it was sort of things were warming up towards the end of tbtl and then in the interim things have cooled back down so i need you to do all the talking for

00:01:31 - 00:03:23 | Speaker 2:

this all right sounds good let's see let me look at my notes here my notes say turns out there is crying in baseball um that's not actually a note i wrote down but i did think that yesterday pardon me that was not me getting emotional for for the record that was me um leave that Being unprofessional. JP, I don't even know if I saw JP getting emotional, but obviously I saw Kyle Seeger as a hell of a send-off for our third baseman, Kyle Seeger, who's been with the organization for 11 years. And once the Red Sox sealed up their fate over, they were playing the Nats, right? And there was no hope left for the Mariners to make their way into the playoffs, even if they had won their game yesterday. The skipper pulled Kyle Seager out of the game about, I think, an inning early so that he could have his walk-off moment. And there were so many tears. Luke, I was mostly paying attention to the Seahawks game at this point, but I was keeping an eye on the Mariners game. I got so choked up. Jared Kelnick, our rookie, is just, like, openly crying as everybody's paying tribute to Kyle Seager. And I've seen, you know, I think I got into some maybe online conversations or saw some, like, tens talking. somewhere about sports, maybe on Slack, and just kind of saying, you know, Kyle Seeger, a lot of people don't get the love of Kyle Seeger. Like, his numbers have never been, like, super flashy, and he's been really frustrating at times, but he's just like, he's a homegrown Mariner who spent all of this time with the organization, like I say, and I think playing for the actual Mariners for nine years, I think, and it was really emotional uh to to see him get his moment just open tears in the dugout and that also made as a man who is losing testosterone by the minute and is getting choked up over everything these days i was glad to see the normalization of crying in baseball yeah jp crawford gave a really emotional

00:03:23 - 00:04:41 | Speaker 3:

post-game interview because the the idea is that the torch is being passed from kyle seager who was the captain of the team but the mariners are not going to pick up his contract because it's like another 20 million bucks or something and they don't need him at third enough to justify that so anyway yeah that was a real sweet thing I mean it was a really sweet season or a fun season a season involving what has now been coined the fun differential because the Mariners I don't have the run differential in front of me but it's just absolutely terrible they scored so many fewer runs I want to say then the team like over the course of the season they just got the runs when they needed to get them um of course cold take calkins had a piece today in the times saying that maybe next year isn't as rosy as you might think no thanks but i don't i don't necessarily buy that i mean i think this year we did it you know we were able to be competitive through a lot of luck a lot of just winning close games the bullpen playing pitching much better than we expected and just that you know this fun differential thing this weird hard to describe vibe that we just we were able to get into i don't think we need that next year i think we'll actually have i think kalanick will be solid uh you know what's who's our uh our highly touted rookie that's the number two player overall in the system um well kyle lewis should be uh

00:04:41 - 00:04:52 | Speaker 2:

coming right the rookie of the year coming back he should be returning and you are speaking of julio rodriguez julio rodriguez thank you almost got there almost got there and uh and uh you know

00:04:52 - 00:05:00 | Speaker 3:

i think that you said this but the understanding is they're actually going to try to go out and spend some money because we now have with JP at short stuff.

00:05:00 - 00:05:29 | Speaker 1:

stop um you know abraham toro looks pretty promising i think there was some talk about him maybe playing third maybe dh'ing hanniger like you put kalanick in right you let uh rodriguez play center um and you uh uh i'm not sure you put in left but then that could mean that if you wanted to you could just have mitch hanniger as your dh oh he's a pretty good outfielder too but we need to get out of the mode where we have luis torenz as our dh does that just effectively means you have two catchers that aren't good at hitting that are hitting when you have him

00:05:29 - 00:06:15 | Speaker 2:

and tom murphy in the lineup so there were games i'm sorry about my cat i might have to stop down and take care of him um we're out of rhythm now we're done with tbtl where he remains quiet but now he's starting to get hungry but um i was gonna say there were times this season where we had three catchers in a game because we also have uh cal riley and uh tom murphy and there were times i think they had cal on i think they had murphy behind the plate one day cal on first i want to say and uh and the third one playing dh and i was just like wow this doesn't seem sustainable i'm amazed that kyle seager only played for 10 years it feels like he's been playing for the mariners for 30 years i know that's the thing too and i think i mean i think his first season was um 2012 so it'd be nine i think actually right because this is maybe with the mariners

00:06:15 - 00:06:48 | Speaker 1:

yeah i think it says it was 2011 through 2021 but maybe the first season was in the minors or something but yeah kyle seager never he never became you know the like elite third baseman uh you know that they hoped he would be but he also didn't flame out i mean we've had plenty like dustin ackley we've had lots of people that we've you know basically uh used a high draft pick on and thought we're going to be something and they weren't so kyle seager was workman like though and i mean it's kind of cool for him to go out on his best statistical season ever Although he didn't do much

00:06:48 - 00:07:09 | Speaker 2:

So it was his best statistical season Because it felt like I was actually trying to check this before the game Because my gut said this was Kyle's best season It felt like it He felt the most consistent It didn't take him until the All-Star break to warm up I thought I was seeing more out of him But then somebody told me that I was wrong about that That this actually wasn't that great of a season for him Which really surprised me

00:07:09 - 00:07:13 | Speaker 1:

This is the most home runs and RBIs he's ever had in the same season

00:07:13 - 00:07:16 | Speaker 2:

Okay, fantastic I know he got 35. I think he ended up with 35 home runs. Who told you that?

00:07:16 - 00:07:24 | Speaker 1:

Carlos Watson? The most intelligent Mariner knower on Amazon Prime.

00:07:24 - 00:07:29 | Speaker 2:

35 home runs. Any idea what the RBI was? I know he got 99 one year, so he must have gotten at least 100.

00:07:29 - 00:08:11 | Speaker 1:

I think, yeah, he had over 100. Nice. So good for him. If I remember right. But anyway, so yeah, that was sweet. And again, this whole season was just gravy. And I'm very excited next year to see the young players take a step and also to see what they can go out and spend money on because one of the things they did in the stepping back from the winning continuum was offloaded some pricey players and it was all so that they could then have a little bit of room to sign some kind of more marquee talents because I think we're probably like maybe, I don't know, a couple of really decent starting pitchers away from being very, very competitive next year.

00:08:11 - 00:08:45 | Speaker 2:

Yeah, it'd be fun to spend on pitchers. Also, we did that. This was kind of funny. We brought up Brash. What is his name? Mike Brash, maybe a pitcher from the minors that we kind of fast tracked at the end of the season when we saw that the Mariners were actually making a run for this and Kikuchi couldn't, well, pitch anymore. or we couldn't count on Kikuchi. So they rushed this pitcher up from the minors, but he never saw any playtime, right? Unless he pitched an inning or something yesterday when I wasn't paying very close attention. I don't know how closely you were paying attention at that point.

00:08:45 - 00:09:49 | Speaker 1:

I was monitoring the game, but if you listen to TBT all day, you know this. Kamero Kev and I were in a bar next to the stadium. We had tickets for the game. We just kept waiting for it to get a little closer because it's impossible to watch because we're also trying to watch football there's like all this stuff to monitor and it's like impossible to do that or harder to do that when you're sitting in a baseball stadium not to mention like the energy on saturday night you know we were all at that game that was just so much fun it was just i mean one of my very favorite baseball games i've ever been to in my life that being said you're in the dark informationally you don't really know if it was a strike i there was a a call i believe was against kalanick where he got he was rung up struck out looking and it wasn't until i was in the bathroom and a guy showed me on his phone which is like maybe let's keep the phones in our pocket in the bathroom but whatever we were walking into the bathroom he was showing me because he was like doing the game cast he showed me how outside of the strike zone the pitch to kalanick was that they called a third strike which i was oblivious to because when you're in right field you just can't see with that level of precision yeah i love it when

00:09:49 - 00:09:59 | Speaker 2:

we're sitting we had uh like i i love i really don't think there are really any bad seats in in that park but we were sitting um uh out in kind of center i guess

00:10:00 - 00:10:26 | Speaker 1:

center right field and uh i love it in baseball when an umpire calls a ball and people around us are like come on blue i'm just like what information are you working on right now from out here in center field that you think that that was a ball you know what i mean right like how are you i i love i i love the gumption but it is it is uh comical well it's just yeah so the

00:10:26 - 00:11:21 | Speaker 2:

funny part is being at a at a sporting event i mean we you know we had the uh the the luck in years past to get to be in um one of those luxury suites either because cairo radio had it or uh from our friends at alaska airlines and it's amazing because i mean those are some of the best seats in the house and what everyone's doing after every play is looking at the small tv that's in the suite to see the replay because you know we're all trained at like was this foot in or out or whatever so being in the stadium is fun energetically but informationally it's actually kind of worse actually our buddy john goodwin was seeing because i'm gonna be back up in seattle this week later for work for cbs and he was like do you guys want to do you want to go to the football game on thursday night because seahawks rams um at um lumen field or whatever but um i i love being at those games but i actually like have more fun just watching them on tv you can just again you just have every every piece of information right there at your disposal

00:11:22 - 00:12:07 | Speaker 1:

Yeah, definitely. For me, I've been telling people that. Like, if there's another opportunity to actually get the sweet treatment, you know, it's hard to say no to that. The sweet life of Luke and Andy. Exactly. So I would say yes to that. I mean, this sounds like the snobbiest thing in the world. But, like, if it's just, like, go to a regular football game and sit in the stands, it's just, like you say, like, it's not me being, you know, like, snooty about I can only be in a suite. It's just a testament to how good the TV broadcast is. Like, it's just like that is the entertaining. They've done such a good job with that, that it is so much fun to be at home making Bloody Marys and watching the telecast. Did I just say telecast? Yes, you did. I think that's the right term. Coast to coast on the Columbia broadcast system.

00:12:07 - 00:12:09 | Speaker 2:

It's a live telecast.

00:12:09 - 00:12:26 | Speaker 1:

Yeah. So anyway, that's why yesterday when you were talking about maybe going to the Mariners game, this was like kind of on Thursday or Friday. We were having this conversation. I was like, I don't know, man. I don't know if I want to give up my football, my cozy football Sunday, you know, wearing my Browns hoodie and just like having everything kind of dialed in and all my screens surrounding me.

00:12:26 - 00:13:17 | Speaker 2:

I know because I was sort of like, you know, this is, you know, once in 20 years that they're this competitive. And I was kind of thinking, God, if they have this like amazing game on Sunday and also if Boston loses, it would be fun to say we were at the game when they clinched it. i mean i was also kind of moving a little slow sunday morning because we had all been up saturday night carousing after the game and stuff so uh it ended up being very fun to just sit at this bar that we were at next to the game and again you'd be surprised at how many people were in the bar because they couldn't get food or drinks in the stadium because the lines were so long so they would come leave the stadium come to this bar get a drink then we would hang out and talk this big group of dudes came in we were all like talking kicking it like a bit like 10 15 guys They all left two innings later. They came back. They're like, this is more fun than the game. Also, the Mariners weren't winning. So that didn't help as well.

00:13:17 - 00:14:59 | Speaker 1:

But can I tell you a highlight of my weekend of my sports weekend? So we show up at T-Mobile Park and I knew it was going to be overwhelming crowd wise. And I think I mentioned this to you today on TBTL. I love T-Mobile. It feels like my second home. It's my happy place. And I've gone there. I went to at least one game by myself this year and also meeting up with people. I'll get there like two hours early and like before anybody's there. And it sort of feels like, you know, you get used to the short lines. And, you know, I was at a day game on a Wednesday, you know, like very low attendance then, relatively speaking. And this weekend had a little bit of the vibe of like when you stay on campus during the summer and everybody leaves and you just start to think that everything is yours. and then all of the students come back and you're just, like, overwhelmed. So we go into T-Mobile Park. I know it's going to be overwhelming, and the lines were very overwhelming right away. But I waited in line for my first beer, let's be honest, beers, because I ordered two at a time because the lines were so ridiculously long. But there's this one place where I order beer always as I'm waiting for the games to begin when I'm there very early, and it's right by the bullpens where I like to hang out. And there's an older woman who always pours my beer. Now, I don't think that she necessarily remembers me, but she's just that type of person who will always give you some sort of a comment that makes you think that she remembers you. But she definitely always is there at the same stand, and I always buy my first couple of beers from her. And I got in that same line on Saturday night, and it was overwhelming. Usually you have to wait like two minutes, and this time I waited, I don't know, like 25.

00:15:00 - 00:16:13 | Speaker 2:

minutes or something and i finally get to the top of the top of the line oh and as a matter of fact um camaro kevin genevieve were like there's got to be better lines than this we're gonna just go get a canopy or somewhere i'm like yeah i got the time and i and i want this particular kind of ipa that they have here so i just stay in line and when i finally get there um she seems you know like she's really busy like just kind of i can tell she's a little overwhelmed too right um so i just as quickly as possible tell her my order give her i have my id out and ready to go she always has to check it and then um she gives me she gives me my beers and then i just really quickly just said hey i'll see you next year and she like looked up and like paused like out of her frenzy and just reached out and put her hand on the back of my hand and squeezed it was the is that what jake crawford was crying about it was the sweetest goddamn moment i ever had like again i don't know I don't know if at any part of her, you know, she sees what, like, how many people does she see in one given shift, you know, like 8,000, 10,000? Maybe not that many because they're spread out across the stands. But anyway, like, I don't know that we have any kind of real connection, but we certainly did for that moment. And it really meant the world to me. That's very sweet.

00:16:13 - 00:16:24 | Speaker 1:

And that's the fun part about being a regular. I could see someday, years from now, when we're retired, you being one of those people that goes to every game. Like you get season tickets, you wear your headphones, you score the game.

00:16:24 - 00:16:58 | Speaker 2:

I do have to start getting into scoring. I thought it was going to this was going to be the year, but I always end up getting too intimidated. But, yeah, I'm thinking about maybe buying some flex passes for next year. And also just a quick thing to note, too, you know, is the Mariners continue on this journey towards kind of building into something special. We hope the All-Star game is coming to Seattle in 2023. You and I never talked about that. Like, I'm thinking about going to the Home Run Derby, probably not, maybe not the game itself. I think the Home Run Derby would be the funner event to go to. I just think that there's so much cool happening in Seattle baseball now.

00:16:58 - 00:17:57 | Speaker 1:

Yeah, I'm excited for that. The last time the All-Star game came to Safeco was, I think, maybe the year it opened, and we had just lost Griffey. And Mike Cameron actually replaced him and was voted in. I think we had five players. Ichiro, I believe, was an All-Star that year. Like, it was a celebration of, in those days, Safeco Field and the Mariners, and it was a really fun day. I didn't go to the game, but I remember watching it on TV. I love the Home Run Derby. This is what I joked about on Twitter watching this year's. You know, we live in a moment in life in America where we really try to protect our children, I think. You know, we have them wear bicycle helmets. We do a lot of stuff for kids that we didn't do when I was a kid for safety. But then for the home run derby, we also have an eight-year-old standing in right field while Juan Soto just whistles absolute screamers. Juan Soto is trying to hit a home run. When he messes up, what he hits is a 3,000-mile-an-hour laser beam. And there's a kid running. There's like 40 kids just jogging around in right field trying to catch these. I find it hilarious and dangerous.

00:17:57 - 00:18:18 | Speaker 2:

Oh, I'm sorry to go back to one other thing, too. I don't know if they broadcast it live. I don't know that they usually do that for first pitches. But they had Kyle Seeger's kid throw out the first pitch yesterday. That was stinking adorable. I saw the replay of it later. I was like, oh, that's so great. Second to you doing it, that was my favorite.

00:18:18 - 00:18:21 | Speaker 1:

They should have pulled Kyle Seeger's kid sooner, though. Why'd they let him get up four runs?

00:18:21 - 00:18:22 | Speaker 2:

I know.

00:18:22 - 00:19:27 | Speaker 1:

That's what I was – I mean, not to litigate that game because it was ultimately moot because of what happened with Boston and the Yankees. but i was like why are you leaving tyler anderson in on a day uh that he clearly just doesn't have it what are you saving your pen for i mean literally the first base runner you should have probably pulled him or the first run but i guess it's kind of neither here nor there it it was what it was um can we shift over to talking about the seahawks a little bit because i went into the weekend thinking you know then the mariners have a very low probability of making it to the playoffs but i thought the seahawks had a lower probability of beating the niners on the road and i think sammy my brother was telling me saturday night he was like i'm not that worried about the niners he goes i just don't think that that doing two quarterbacks thing has ever worked and i thought about it i guess i didn't realize that they were doing this trey lance jimmy garoppolo kind of one-two punch me neither i don't i can't remember a time when that's ever worked like i mean you get an occasional taste some hill type of deal where they'll bring him in to run a play but just sort of like the overall idea anyway so isn't that actually a really faint isn't that

00:19:27 - 00:19:32 | Speaker 2:

a famous quote from like i was it um i don't know what coach said it but if you have two quarterbacks

00:19:32 - 00:19:59 | Speaker 1:

you don't have one or something along those lines probably because i mean it just i feel like the quarterback you need to get in the rhythm of the game it's a long game it can have its ups and downs as we saw with russell wilson yesterday um russell wilson was at the beginning of the game we went three and out three times in a row which the seattle times today said that that was the worst offensive start in the pete carroll era five times i mean did you say that five times went three the first five times yeah wow i thought it was three

00:20:00 - 00:20:59 | Speaker 2:

times so yeah even worse i guess because three would have been kind of low because we do that on the regular actually but um we i mean we had like negative six yards pass i mean we just are the stats were just horrible but i told camaro kiff i was like we're gonna pull the titans on this one which is to say we're hanging around we got very lucky that kittle was banged up we got lucky that their their uh field goal here robbie gold was uh hurt so their punter had to try to kick a field goal and missed we just we were getting dominated so thoroughly but we also were still close we you know it never got out of control due to luck and an interception here and there and things like that and what was very heartening about this game was that we went back to being more like the old Seahawks in that we were very productive in the second half and again thanks to you know a muffed uh kick uh that really helped us a lot um you know put us on the the whatever, the 10-yard line. But Russell had some really nice plays. That play where he hit Freddie Swain in the end zone,

00:20:59 - 00:21:02 | Speaker 1:

that touchdown, where he was basically in the grasp

00:21:02 - 00:21:25 | Speaker 2:

and somehow managed to make that work. That was pretty great. And then our defense. Now, I don't know if this is the Niners' offense is not particularly great this year. Garoppolo didn't look sharp to me. And then, you know, Trey Lance is just young. So our defense looked good, except for that busted play where we let Devo Samuel get that, whatever, 70-yarder. That was, I guess, Jamal Adams totally blew that.

00:21:25 - 00:21:55 | Speaker 1:

Well, it didn't appear that way. Certainly, like, in the moment, even when they were playing the replay, like, Adams was gesturing for somebody else to pick that man up. You could see him, like, literally pointing, like, pick him up, pick him up. And I think, and I can't, you know, I'm so bad with the depth chart, especially on defense. I can't remember who else is around him there. But I think that the general consensus was it wasn't his fault necessarily, but one of the younger guys not picking it up and him kind of trying to direct traffic in the backfield there. Yeah, maybe so.

00:21:55 - 00:22:26 | Speaker 2:

I mean, Jamal Adams had one sort of pass defense when they ran that double pass, so they threw it backwards and then the guy threw it down and Jamal Adams was able to catch up. But Jamal Adams, I don't remember him getting any sacks in the game yesterday. I don't remember him actually doing anything that pivotal. So still hoping he can justify his salary. But I don't know. Do you think that this was the Seahawks defense has figured something out, or do you think that the Niners offense just is not clicking right now?

00:22:27 - 00:24:28 | Speaker 1:

See, I'm so bad at answering that question because I only see these teams as they come into my radar. So this is the first time I saw San Francisco this year, and I don't know really what to compare it to. Same with the Browns and Vikings, which we'll talk about a little bit. Like I told Stu via text yesterday, like I want to have him on just so I can pepper him with questions about what I'm literally seeing on the screen, right? And so I don't know. I can't answer that. But, man, I was telling you before the show, it was just, like, such a relief to finally watch the Seahawks kind of take a dominant lead in this finally in the third. Was it the third? Yeah, I think it was, like, kind of mid-third where they scored those two touchdowns. And, like, it was a series of plays. Like, they were just getting so stymied, and it was such a low-scoring game up until that point. And that was coming on the heels of me watching a very low scoring, frustrating Browns Vikings game where hardly any points were scored as well. And so it was just feeling like maybe it was like kind of doubly for me, just feeling like such a frustrating day. And to finally see Seattle wake up with three plays, I think, I mean, maybe not quite in a row, obviously, but three series of things that happened that were like really awesome. I mean, Russell Wilson, he ran that he ran that first touchdown in in the third. It wasn't the first touchdown of the game, but he ran that first touchdown in in the third, which was just an amazing feat of athleticism. And then to get that kind of, again, muffed kick return by the 49ers, which really it was. Yes, it was muffed, but then the returner recovered it, but then didn't stay down and tried to get up again and then fumbled it. You need to stay down in that situation, although thank you for not doing that. And then the Seahawks taking advantage of that and Russell Wilson, again, not just like not just ground and pounding it into the end zone with Carson or what have you, but with a really amazing throw to throw and catch to Swain. It was that suddenly like it really felt like football Sunday was really paying off in those moments.

00:24:28 - 00:25:12 | Speaker 2:

Yeah. Now the Seahawks have the Rams on a short week Thursday night at Lumen. That's going to be, I think, a rocking game. I don't know when I became the Seahawks pessimist. I mean, that's usually Durs' job in our friend group. But, I mean, the Rams are a very scary team. Definitely. My only hope can be that we just have one of those games where, I don't know, maybe we have some momentum coming out of San Francisco, and we just kind of like, you know, Russell just has one of those nights. Somehow we figured out a way to block Aaron Donald. I mean, they're just so tough because their defense is so solid. And now they have a much better quarterback with Matt Stafford over Jared Goof. And they're a very, very imposing team these days.

00:25:12 - 00:26:09 | Speaker 1:

But let's just also just take a moment to say this was such a big win yesterday. Like, just emotionally for the team, this was so big. Like, you know, going into this game 1-2, a much rockier start than we expected. And then you and I last week looking ahead at the schedule and me trying to be Pollyanna-ish about it and optimistic, but looking ahead at San Francisco at San Francisco. And then you're right, this Thursday night game against the Rams coming up, these divisional opponents who are like really seemed like they were really ticking like this really changes the course. Even with today's or I'm sorry, with this weekend's win, if we do fall next weekend to the Rams, This makes it so much more palatable, and it doesn't feel like we're just – I mean, if we lose this one or if we had lost this one and then lose next week to the Rams, we would be in free fall. This was such a big win no matter what happens next week.

00:26:09 - 00:27:09 | Speaker 2:

Yeah, it was huge, and it was also huge that it was on the road. Yes, yes. Now we get to host them. And again, I will mention that they were dinged up. Kittle was moving kind of slow. Like we said, their kicker wasn't there, wasn't able to play. He was having a groin issue. So, I mean, we'll see what it looks like when they're at full power. But yeah, getting our first divisional win on the road is really huge. So, I mean, this team is so hard for me to wrap my mind around because I don't know if anything really fundamentally changed. I mean, is Minnesota just a better offensive team than San Francisco? Did Minnesota just have a better game last week? Or did the defense actually figure something out? And actually, like, you know, because I think the eight drives in a row, they forced the Niners to punt or something. So, yeah, I don't know. I don't know, you know, if we fix something or if we just got lucky or what. But it certainly feels better going into the Rams two and two as opposed to one and three.

00:27:09 - 00:27:12 | Speaker 1:

What are your plans for watching the Rams game this Thursday?

00:27:12 - 00:27:16 | Speaker 2:

I don't know. I'm in Seattle. I'm doing a TV story about something called the Vera Project.

00:27:17 - 00:27:20 | Speaker 1:

Yeah. Oh, I love the Vera Project. Yeah. Let me know if you want to get together and watch the game somewhere.

00:27:20 - 00:27:45 | Speaker 2:

Yeah, definitely tempting I think I'll want to watch it on TV, like I said, instead of going to the game Now, a game I was able to do, zero watching of all I did try to listen to some of it on the radio As Camaro and I were driving down to the baseball stadium Or I should say across the street from the baseball stadium yesterday Was the Browns and the Vikings That game, what happened with that? I know almost nothing about it, other than the Browns won

00:27:45 - 00:28:50 | Speaker 1:

Yes, well, like I said before It was a frustrating game to watch. The Browns did get the win. I felt a little bit like my old Browns fandom of just like frustration and really thinking, even though the Browns did hold the lead, you know, like a four-point lead for most of the game, it really felt like the type of game that the Browns were going to lose. It wasn't until the last three seconds ticked off the clock that I was like, OK, we got out of there. It felt, you know, it was a road game playing playing the Vikings. And the very first drive of the game, the Vikings just march right down the field and get a touchdown. And you're just like, oh, my. OK, well, let's see what Baker's got. And Baker didn't have much yesterday. I don't know what's going on with Baker. He hurt his left shoulder. He's right handed, but he hurt his left shoulder in a game, I think, two games ago. And there are some rumors that maybe he's downplaying the extent of that injury. He's looked really off the last two games. Now, the Bears defense—

00:28:50 - 00:28:53 | Speaker 2:

Did he heard it setting up the garage sale in front of the stadium?

00:28:54 - 00:31:01 | Speaker 1:

He heard it tackling somebody who had just picked him off in the— I want to say that wasn't the Bears game, so it must have been the Texans game, I think. Anyway, it's interesting. Now, I'm going to get—I don't know if this is interesting, but I need to get this off my chest. I was sort of taking an inventory of what we've seen from the Browns so far this year. And the first game of the season was a loss to the Chiefs that we didn't expect to win. But I felt so good coming out of that loss because the Browns and Baker looked so good on both sides of the ball, running, passing. Baker was just clicking. With the Texans, I think the defense disappeared for a while, but Baker looked really, really good. But in these last two games, I don't know what the personality of this team is anymore because Baker looked really off last week. And I thought that mostly had to do with – and, again, I don't even know if I'm right about this, but it just seemed like the Bears' defensive line was just giving the Browns nothing and giving Baker no time. And I was like, okay, well, the Bears are something special. They've really scrambled Baker. He's off his – game but to see that kind of two weeks in a row because baker um i think they three and outed uh you know right after the the vikings you know marched down the field got that touchdown i think the browns went like three and out and then were just like stymied for a long time they finally um i think they finally they did score a touchdown eventually and then through i don't have to go all the machinations of it but they end up getting a two-point conversion because of a dumb mistake sorry by a dumb mistake by the Vikings calling a timeout when there were no more timeouts left so they were close so they could run in the ball and then they got another field goal so the score for most of the game was a weird 11 to 7 which was very strange later on they get one more field goal to make it a full you know seven point game but you know the Vikings had the ball last they ended up you know running out of time and not making it work but they had the ball at their 26 yard line um with like six seconds left and i i really thought they were going to tie it up and

00:31:01 - 00:31:06 | Speaker 2:

then win in overtime but the browns they had the ball like basically on the 26 like they were 26

00:31:06 - 00:31:20 | Speaker 1:

yards from the end zone yep and i think wow yep and and he cousins went to pass it and i can't remember exactly if i got broken up or if i went through the hands of the receiver or whatnot that was the final that was the final play of the game though so it was really i'm glad genevieve was

00:31:20 - 00:31:26 | Speaker 2:

out at some fancy tea there's a tea i saw that she was drinking cotton candy infused cocktails

00:31:26 - 00:32:16 | Speaker 1:

yeah um so i was kind of glad she wasn't here for because i was really like after a night of yelling in celebration at the mariners game i was like doing some real angry yelling at my my tv and ipod or ipad i should say as i was watching the game and kind of like um angrily kind of stomping around the house but um again i i was very angry during a win so we'll definitely take the win The Browns are now 3-1. Unfortunately, so is almost everybody else in the division except for the Steelers. So we have a really tough division. Who do they play next week? The Browns are, and I was hoping you could answer me some questions about this. They are playing the Chargers, but I don't really know what the personality of the Chargers are. And I think the Chargers are playing tonight, right? Yeah, they're playing Las Vegas tonight. So what is the personality of the Chargers? I have to worry here.

00:32:16 - 00:32:42 | Speaker 2:

The Chargers, I think, are kind of pretty surprising this year. they're two and one they've got justin herbert at quarterback who is this kid out of the university of oregon and he's getting a lot of buzz he's getting a lot of good uh reviews and um uh they i'm trying to remember who the chargers beat someone kind of unexpectedly this year um to get to their two and one record so the chargers are i think a pretty decent team yep so anyway that's

00:32:42 - 00:32:56 | Speaker 1:

what we're going into uh next week actually let me take a look here it's um yeah it's at the Chargers so that's what the Browns are are going into next week and that'll be a one o'clock game and like you mentioned the the Seahawks play this Thursday so it'll be kind of a broken up football

00:32:56 - 00:34:17 | Speaker 2:

weekend yeah it'll if somehow the Seahawks can pull something out on Thursday night which it seems like again it would be I have to imagine we'll be a home home underdog which they always say you should bet that like if you see a home underdog we'll probably be a home underdog and And if we somehow managed to win, though, we would then I think it would go Arizona and then us. I mean, Arizona is undefeated right now, but we would have two NFC West wins under our belt and we would have the same record as L.A. And so that would be really incredible if we could pull that off. So fingers crossed for that. That's going to be an exciting night. Thursday night football is is is complicated because it's so fun because you get this like early in the week game to be all excited about. But then if you don't win, you have so many days to wait until you get to play again. If you win, you get to bask in it. I mean, that's all, of course, a microcosm of that or the compressed version of that is when your team wins, there's just nothing more fun than watching endless more football on Sunday and endless fastest two minutes from Boomer and like SportsCenter and Scott Van Pelt and just like replay after replay after replay of your team winning. And, of course, the complete opposite is true. I think I wrote on Twitter. I know Sunday scaries is way overused but I said something like Sunday scaries hit way harder when your team loses because you just got like, just like Sunday night

00:34:17 - 00:34:25 | Speaker 1:

just is a wasteland. Yeah, definitely that's usually when I just turn off the football programming and just move into some political gab fest

00:34:25 - 00:34:27 | Speaker 2:

The Bears won as well

00:34:27 - 00:34:29 | Speaker 1:

Oh yeah, that's right

00:34:29 - 00:34:49 | Speaker 2:

2-2, that's I don't know the last time the Bears were 2-2 but that's a pretty respectable record as well Yeah, yeah um and ken in uh detroit sorry that your lions lost but glad to hear that you've given up desire that's right yeah go university of michigan i think is where we're at with that uh all right

00:34:49 - 00:34:54 | Speaker 1:

anything else um i don't think so boy this was kind of short given uh all the emotions and what

00:34:54 - 00:34:59 | Speaker 2:

a huge weekend we used up all of our sports energy uh watching the games and screaming yeah

00:35:00 - 00:35:03 | Speaker 1:

We just had no energy left to talk about the games that we were screaming at.

00:35:03 - 00:36:04 | Speaker 2:

Yeah, I will just say that just to reiterate, I guess, I just think that AFC North division is like we were talking about the NFC West division as being a tough one, which it is. I mean, you have an undefeated team in the NFC West, certainly. But in the AFC North, you have three teams that are all three and one. And it sort of seems like the Browns are, I don't know, man. They've really struggled the last two games. And here we are again. And now we have to worry about the Bengals. I mean, it's just so interesting that we don't have to worry about Pittsburgh anymore. Pittsburgh is 1-3, and how delicious is that? Well, it's really delicious, but it's no good that suddenly now – what's his – it's not Toro. I'm thinking of the Mariners. Joe Burrow, is that who the big quarterback – Oh, Joe Burrow, the Bengals quarterback? He's finally having the season that he kind of deserved, right? Because he's a good quarterback, but they got injured last year, I think, if I'm remembering my history right. But now suddenly we have this different dynamic, and the Ravens are still the Ravens. right, at three and one. So it's like the Browns are finally able to compete. But, man, what a division to compete in.

00:36:05 - 00:37:51 | Speaker 1:

Yeah, it's hard for me. I guess I don't have a ton to say about the Seahawks because I just don't know if we're good or not. Yeah, it's interesting. When we play bad teams, we can look pretty good. Although I'm not saying Niners are a bad team. And also we looked like dog poop for half of the game. So really the only complete game we've – and I guess it wasn't a complete game either. We look strongest against Indy The opening game of the season But If I'm a Browns fan If I'm in your shoes I'm feeling good about the Browns In that you know you have some things That you can rely on You know your defense is stout Miles Garrett is a terror And you also know That your running game Chunt Is going to wear down so many teams And one of those guys is always going to break Some big run at some point Like you just know those two things going in I don't know what that is for the Seahawks Because I feel like our defense Kind of looked okay one game I guess looked okay this last week Although they did give up 21 points But like I don't know what our special thing is It's like Steve Martin trying to figure out What his special thing is when he's a good jerk Like you'd always say it's Russell Wilson But it's like Russell Wilson also In the same way that he can be like Doing that amazing play Where he eludes the rush And throws it to Freddie Swain in the end zone he can just as well be eluding one rusher only to run into another rusher and take like a crushing 14-yard sack that pushes us out of field goal range. You know what I mean? So I don't know what our special thing is, and I guess it'll be interesting to see what emerges over the course of the season. If that, you know, I could have thought it was maybe our running attack, maybe Chris Carson, although Chris Carson looked pretty stymied last night. I think he's hurt too, which is one of the things. Carson is just, I don't think he's super durable, unfortunately. Although Alex Collins looked pretty good.

00:37:51 - 00:37:59 | Speaker 2:

Yeah, didn't Collins get the first touchdown, or am I misremembering that? I feel like a running back at the first Seahawks touchdown, but my memory is true. It definitely wasn't Carson.

00:37:59 - 00:38:38 | Speaker 1:

So, yeah, Collins got – well, I don't know if it was the first, but Collins got – I think he – it was a nice run. It was like a 25-yarder or something. So Collins was getting a lot of reps, I think, because Chris Carson is still sore from whatever had him out two weeks ago. So, yeah, I don't know. I don't know. It'll be weird next year And boy we're getting way out ahead of ourselves But if the Mariners actually can fulfill the promise Of this season And of getting some better players It'll be interesting next year around this time Will the Mariners be playing meaningful games And the Seahawks Because it was so fun But it was almost too much

00:38:38 - 00:38:43 | Speaker 2:

Having both of the city sports teams Competing this weekend

00:38:43 - 00:38:52 | Speaker 1:

And having them both be playing games that mattered I'm just not used to that In 20 years, the Mariners haven't been playing a game in October that anyone was trying to watch.

00:38:52 - 00:39:59 | Speaker 2:

It's just so and it's just interesting. The rhythm of the games are so different. It's just that that was the kind of the hard thing for me to kind of pay attention to both or to like go from this Browns game where I'm like stomping around the house and just like I'm like at one point I was like so frustrated in the fourth quarter. So frustrating that I was like I started cleaning the window. So like I'm weird. I can't handle I can't handle my this this anxiety that I get during games. So I'm like I'm like gritting my teeth, looking at the TV and like scrubbing the windowsill, which seems sooty to me in the moment. Like it's just it's not it's not good. But in fact, maybe we shouldn't watch the game this Thursday. I just need to close my door and clean my windowsills. But anyway, yeah, I just want to say again, huge win this weekend. And like everything that you're saying about not knowing who this team is, is just we are despondent today if the Seahawks didn't win this game, which I think we are both. We realized this was a really tough one to win and they were going in these two tough games. I'm just like, again, just I want to just maybe end on that, not to rush out of here, but I just want to just reiterate that.

00:40:00 - 00:40:16 | Speaker 1:

Again, like today and this show would be so much different if the Seahawks had lost, because I think we would just be, you know, feeling like free falling and have no idea what's next. We'd be really hursting it up and just being like end of the season, end of an era.

00:40:16 - 00:41:18 | Speaker 2:

Right. Yeah. No, you're right. It definitely means that there's a chance. But I do think we're going to have to figure out. We're going to have to figure out what we're like I said, what we're all about. And I'm also worried—I mean, not to—you were trying to end this on a positive note, and I'm not trying to end it on a negative note, but our secondary looked actually pretty good against Garoppolo and Trey Lance, except for that one busted play. Like, they seem to be generally in position. You saw, like, Ryan Neal with a couple of nice, like, pass defenses and stuff like that. It'll be really interesting to see what we do against the Rams, who just have Cooper Cup and a million weapons and now a pretty competent quarterback with Matt Stafford and obviously, you know, a real high-powered offense. Will our secondary be able to figure out a way to kind of lock that down? It seems to me like Russell Wilson is going to have to play the game of his life because the other thing, and I've already said this, but they have Jalen Ramsey in the secondary and then Aaron Donald rushing you. So if you get away from Aaron Donald, you still have to throw at Jalen Ramsey or the side of the field he's not on. So it's a tall order.

00:41:19 - 00:41:21 | Speaker 1:

Yep, it's definitely going to be a challenge.

00:41:22 - 00:41:47 | Speaker 2:

But boy, wouldn't it be a nice weekend if the Seahawks pull this up? I mean, to think after the loss in Minnesota, And by the way, Stu and our other listeners in Minnesota, sorry for your loss of that game. That sucks. But to think about how Seahawks fans were feeling after the Minnesota game, to think that there's a possibility we could go into this next weekend actually being 3-2 and being 2-0 in the division, that would represent a massive turnaround.

00:41:48 - 00:41:58 | Speaker 1:

Especially in then facing the Steelers, who, as I mentioned before, the Steelers are up after the Rams. I haven't watched any of those games. I don't know exactly what's going on, but it's not good for them.

00:41:59 - 00:42:25 | Speaker 2:

Yeah. All right. That's going to do it for this week. Thank you for tuning in. Small but hearty group of people who like to listen to us talk about sports. We're going to be back here next week with all things sports related here on the TBTL No Point Conversion. Until then, have a great week. May all of your teams win, even when they're playing each other. Yeah. And when we're talking about the No Point Conversion, there's just absolutely no tangent too wrong. Or detail too long. We got that wrong.

00:42:26 - 00:42:56 | Speaker 3:

No matter what you are I will always be with you Doesn't matter what you do Girl, blue girl With you No matter what you do I will always be around
