It primarily serves as a temporary suspension or penalty for misconduct. In some leagues, a referee issues a blue card to send a player to a sin bin for a temporary period, usually 10 minutes for outdoor or two minutes for indoor. The player must sit out, leaving their team shorthanded. So a blue card is like a power play in hockey. When you get a yellow card in soccer, the player still gets to play, unless they get a red card, and then they're automatically out. But some leagues have what's called a blue card, and it's just sort of like you have to go sit out for a little bit, your team is shorthanded because of it, and then you get to come back. The answer is tennis. If the serve misses, it's called a fault, which is either if you hit the net or if it lands out of bounds. The player gets to try the serve again. If they miss this attempt as well, it's called a double fault. As a penalty for missing both tries, the server automatically loses the point and the other player gets the point. In volleyball, if you miss the serve, it's just the other team's ball. You don't get another chance, but in tennis you do. Parent Challenge! What Scottish sport involves tossing a giant log end over end? Bucket log. This is called the caber toss. The goal of the caber toss is to flip a large, tapered wood pole, or the caber, so that it lands perfectly straight in line with the thrower, pointing directly away from them. Distance is not a factor. Precision and technique are the ultimate objectives. Have you seen this before? It's usually at the Scottish games where contestants will wear kilts. And it's like they take a telephone pole and they hold it between their legs with their two hands. And they run and they throw it forward and they try to make it flip a big pole. Flip end over end. And the goal is to make it be pointing straight away from them and not be turned at all. Have you seen this before? No. So I have seen Caber Toss. I thought the goal was to throw it as far as you could, which was why I thought the stronger you are, the better. Because you could throw the pole farther. But really, it's a matter of throwing it straightest. I learned something new.
